NEW YEAR, NEW POSSIBILITIES

H

appy 2017, Ventana Monthly readers! As I write this, the county is in the midst of a series of rainstorms that are bringing some muchneeded moisture to thirsty Southern California. I’d almost forgotten what a good downpour felt like — and the sense of release and relief that comes with it, clearing the air and washing away the dust and debris. I’m taking it as a sign of good things to come. One very good thing on the horizon: the Durango Songwriters Expo, which will take place in Ventura in February. Organizers expect this to be the new West Coast home for the renowned music conference, where talent comes to be seen and heard, music industry professionals come looking for that next big hit (or the soundtrack to their next breakout film or television production), and everyone is eager to get their networking strings in tune. It culminates in a big concert featuring the best and brightest of emerging artists, including many local musicians, so be sure to read up on it in this week’s “About Town.” The beginning of the year is, of course, a time for reflection and fresh starts, so our first edition of 2017 also has two stories that speak to the more philosophical side of things. We profile local longevity expert Mohammed Hasan, who shares his thoughts on how

to live a long life, and live it well. Our “Travel” article is as much about internal journeys as external. La Casa de Maria, a retreat in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, is a place where the emotional depths that beg to be plumbed can be explored at leisure, in a safe, serene and beautiful environment. And speaking of beautiful environments . . . If you have yet to discover the splendors of the Channel Islands, why not make a trip to at least one of them in 2017? Allow us to recommend Santa Cruz Island, the focus of our cover story, for your first outing. It’s close, with lots of hiking and kayaking possibilities, and even in the dead of winter, it tends to have mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Big plus: The boat ride to get there is half the fun! After the festivities of the holidays have past, January can feel a little bit like a letdown. Hopefully, we’ve given you some things to look forward to in the coming months, and some ideas for banishing the winter blues. Getting back to work doesn’t have to mean going back to the same old grind. A whole year of adventure awaits, if you know where to look. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

BLUEPRINT for living For longevity guru Mohammed Hasan, achieving a long life is all in the planning. BY TIM POMPEY PORTRAIT BY MICHAEL MONTANO WITH JACK KEOUGH

WORDS TO LIVE BY: “You need to be proactive for yourself, because what’s the benefit of an accidental 100 years if your living is not good?” — Mohammed Hasan.

a mindset. Some of our current negative reactions to aging come from watching older people suffer. How do we counteract this? “Start questioning,” he suggests. “It’s so simple to live long. All you have to do is ask the question: What are the factors in your life that you need to live long? You plan it that way so that you have everything available at that age, and then there’s the planning and sticking to it.” Hasan’s class on longevity focuses on research, and brings together a group of people to discuss how to use that research to make those important healthy choices. What Hasan does best is put the pieces together for his students and bring clarity to the subject. “I organize it and put it together to explain what is going on so that people can understand it better.” One of Hasan’s students, 86-year-old Ron Cameron, talks about how the class has been helpful to him. Cameron, an electrical engineer and mediator, met Hasan ten years ago. “I liked him as a person,” he recalled, “and when he recommended that I come to his class, I thought I would give it a try.” Cameron believes the class provides a powerful collective sense of learning about health and longevity. “We motivate one another,” he said, “and that motivation comes from our collective research about new industries, new foods, new drugs. We learn what seems to produce the best results for most people.” He cites such personal health benefits as learning to deep breathe, which Cameron has used to lower his blood pressure. He’s also been introduced to a variety of new healthy fruits and foods which Hasan often brings from his own back yard. “We discuss the advantages of these,” Cameron explained. “In this way, we have become more conscious of what we eat and why we eat it.” Some typical subjects in the class include information on good nutrition, proper exercise, and available foods in local farmers’ markets. Sometimes Hasan will invite someone over 100 to come talk to the class. Some class time is always devoted to answering questions and engaging in discussions. Hasan emphasizes that the purpose of the class is to find tangible ways to work at longevity and to make longevity more meaningful. It’s not just living long, it’s about enjoying the time one is given to live. Beyond information gathering, however, he also wants to encourage his students to make healthy choices. “It’s not what we don’t know,” he said. “It’s more about what we know but do not practice that’s causing our problems with longevity.” v Hasan’s class meets on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. Contact him at hasaneng@dslextreme.com or call 805.218.5574.

PROFILE

m

ohammed Hasan is not a doctor, nor does he have a background in medicine. Yet he strongly asserts that he understands how to live a longer life. In fact, his passion for this subject has led him for many years to offer a free weekly class which he calls his “stress, health, and longevity” class. Hasan claims that the idea for the class came to him during a discussion with a friend about how to deal with some of their personal and health problems. After the discussion, he wondered if there might be other people interested in this subject. “I thought, if I’m going to instruct one person, why not more than one?” he said. Hasan has been an engineer in this county for more than 40 years. Initially moving to the area in 1974, he has worked for the Ventura Regional Sanitation District and served as the Utilities Superintendent for the City of Oxnard. In 1984, he launched his own engineering company located in midtown Ventura. Hasan Consultants specializes in civil and environmental engineering, planning, surveying, and traffic and transportation. As a former restaurant owner, he also knows a little about food. Hasan thinks that Ventura County is fortunate because it has great access to fresh food, especially produce. “Food is one of the most important things when it comes to longevity,” he explained. “Good food gives us energy. Junk food takes away our energy.” He admits that our dietary habits here in the U.S. challenge our longevity. “With the advent of new technologies, our food consumption saves us money,” he stated, “but there seems to be little or no criteria for anything that’s released in the food market. Research should be done before it’s put out, not after.” He also realizes that for most of us, knowledge of nutrition is complex and confusing. After all, how many of us really understand the ingredients on a label, and whether these ingredients are helpful or harmful? As he noted: “The public cannot be an expert on everything. There should be a group of people who decide this. The FDA does this with drugs, but with food, it’s even more important.” When it comes to longevity, Hasan insists that the real key is to have a plan and be proactive about your own life. Beyond building a retirement fund, longevity is about planning for good health and happiness. “In our new society, you must take charge of your own life,” he said. “You need to be proactive for yourself, because what’s the benefit of an accidental 100 years if your living is not good? A planned 100 years is much better.” Hasan emphasizes that good longevity is really

TUNING UP FOR SUCCESS

The Durango Songwriters Expo brings together artists and music industry professionals in Ventura.

e

BY TRACY HUDAK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN

ven beyond the headphones and concert halls, we are surrounded by song. It colors the feel of virtually every place we do business, and it punctuates all forms of media — from ringtones to movies and everything in between. At the heart of every song that’s made you bounce in your car, hum while shopping or tear up during a commercial, is a songwriter. That songwriter must not only master the art of composition, but also navigate the vast and dynamic industry that supports the trade. One of the most beloved and influential career opportunities for these artists, the Durango Songwriters Expo (DSE), takes place in Ventura this February. The expo joins pop and country songwriting talent and industry professionals from music meccas like Los Angeles, Nashville and New York, as well as from the far corners of the United States and other countries. It is a weekend packed with music, professional insights and relationship-building, featuring industry panel discussions, feedback sessions, open mics and a Saturday night concert open to the public. But what sets the Durango Songwriters Expo apart from other }} industry conventions is its intimacy, and its impact.

The expo first began in 1996, after longtime songwriter/producer Jim Attebery moved his life and Malibu music studio to Durango, Colorado. He and co-founder Bruce Mandel invited industry folks to gather in Durango, as much to stay connected to them as to create a space for “aspiring talent to have the opportunity to be legitimately heard, as opposed to the large, impersonal music conventions I’d attended in LA,” Attebery explains. The DSE is purposefully inclusive, open to 12-year-old beginners and 70-year-old hitmakers alike. And the expo treats them all as equals, with plenty of opportunities to share their work. Attendance is capped at 200 people, as opposed to similar expos that try to service thousands of attendees. This intimacy pays off for artists, both personally and professionally. The DSE is a weekend of listening and being listened to, learning from others and receiving feedback. For emerging talent, this can be akin to walking around with your skin peeled off, but in the supportive setting of the expo, artists recognize themselves as part of a whole. Criticism becomes a challenge to overcome, and writers leave inspired. For Attebery, this is the most valuable part of the expo, creating a “unique community” where songwriters are validated and grow. “It really is like an ongoing reunion. And most importantly, everyone from the hit writers on down are there to get better — and they do,” he says. “It’s very inspiring for everyone, including me.” Connections go deeper than just networking. Singer/songwriter Renee Wilson tells of how she came to her first expo with just some songs and no intention of singing. Others insisted she perform, so another musician took 20 minutes to learn her song and played backup for her in an open-mic session. “My whole world has changed,” she says. She booked her first job with an industry professional she met at DSE, which, within a year, led to producing an album and touring. The expo is renowned for its kismet — breakfasts with industry heroes, or partnerships and friendships that are sparked through spontaneous group-songwriting in the hotel lobby, or the guitar circles that go into the wee hours of the night. It’s these connections that help attendees build careers in a multifaceted and mercurial market. Songwriters may self-publish or contract with a music publishing house, working solo or on teams to get cuts made by performing artists or to get tracks placed in movies, trailers, video games, television shows or com-

mercials. Or a troubadour may put a band together to produce a record and/or tour with the hopes of selling tracks or getting a contract with a record label. While countless songs and careers have been touched by DSE, Meghan Trainor is one of the most visible. She attended the expo in 2009 at age 15. By her second year, she was signed to Big Yellow Dog publishing to write songs. A few years later, a demo she created with co-writer and producer Kevin Kadish got the attention of Epic Records, and they signed her. That song, “All About That Bass,” earned her accolades and awards, including a Grammy. At last year’s DSE, she reminded attendees that “every handshake here is crucial, very important, even if you don’t think it is,” because “now I get to do what I love to do every day because of a handshake.” While the reputation of the expo draws interest from folks industrywide, Attebery purposefully invites only the “cream of the crop” of music industry professionals to participate. Hit songwriters, A&R scouts from record labels, music publishers, managers, producers, music supervisors for film, television and advertising — only those that are in a position to be “potentially beneficial” to the writers are asked to attend. Having only 200 attendees creates “unparalleled ratios” of contact for the writers, according to Attebery, but it also keeps the pros from feeling “bombarded” as they are in other settings. The DSE offers a low-key, intimate environment to seek out emerging and established talent, to offer advice, and to connect with peers and colleagues from all over the country, all in a lovely setting — this time at the Crowne Plaza Resort on the beach in Ventura. This combination of creative industry getaway in a beautiful place has proven to be a durable model. The Expo is held two times a year, in the fall near Boulder and in the spring for the past 11 years in Santa Ynez wine country. Attebery has roots in Ventura and is excited about it now becoming the expo’s second home. Its proximity to Los Angeles and the airports make it a much more convenient location. And its beauty and charm offer the perfect container for creating connections and inspiration. v DURANGO SONGWRITERS EXPO February 16-18, 2017 970.259.9747 www.durango-songwriters-expo.com

ABOVE: Expo founder Jim Attebery works with Gargus on her latest composition. A longtime songwriter and music producer, he understands inherently the need for artists to be seen, as well as heard, by those looking to hire talent. LEFT: Meghan Trainor is the expo’s poster child for success: Connections she made at the 2011 event led to her first publishing deal and eventual pop stardom.

TRANSFORMATION Walking a path to healing at La Casa de Maria.

w

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID DOBRESKI e all have challenges in life. I’d certainly had plenty of my own in recent times. I had been on a roller coaster of grief and had been all over the map, both physically and emotionally, after losing more than 20 loved ones over the course of just two years. Sometimes you just have to say to yourself, “Stop the world, I want to get off!” And I knew just the right place to go. Few healing places near at hand provide the silence and gentleness of The Center for Spiritual Renewal at La Casa de Maria Retreat Center. The facility is housed in a historic, elegant, antiquefilled mansion set on 26 acres in the heart of Montecito, and it is in a category of its own. Perhaps it is the quietude and the gentle care of those who look after guests from all walks of life. The nourishing meals and the beautiful setting also contribute. There is something deep here that is rarely found elsewhere. }}

So I made my way to La Casa de Maria for two nights of healing. Upon arrival, I was shown around, given the ground rules and meal times before being helped upstairs to my quarters. I immediately collapsed onto the huge bed and soft pillows for an afternoon nap. My room had a beautiful hand-carved walnut ceiling and windows that overlooked a giant eucalyptus tree. Doors also open to a porch above the lovely central courtyard. An antique desk, comfortable wing-back chairs, Persian carpet, vintage bathroom and large walk-in closet added to the splendor. At dinner, several other guests and I gathered in the kitchen; and our very talented chef, Chantelle Cheng, explained the beautiful meal that lay before us, which included vegan and gluten-free dishes. There were couscous, a squash and chickpea tagine, beef kafta, organic chard from a local garden and ginger cake for dessert. We all joined hands as “Sister” Pauline — a former Catholic nun who has been active here since 1947 — led a pre-dinner prayer. The interfaith Immaculate Heart Community oversees the retreat, which is open to one and all, regardless of religious or spiritual inclinations. People come here for healing, yes, but also to renew and celebrate a special occasion in a contemplative setting or even just to read or write. I fell asleep easily to the clicking of crickets and awoke to gentle birdsong. In the early morning, I tiptoed quietly across the creaky oak floorboards, down the stone staircase with its magnificent grille work, stepped into an overcast early morning and proceeded to the labyrinth that is on part of the grounds surrounding the retreat house. Across centuries, walking a labyrinth has been associated with the mysteries of life, death and resurrection, and represents our passage through time and experience. The center suggests that it is good to pick a word or intention upon entering. The word “transition” came to mind. As I walked silently on the eucalyptustree bark shards and rock-lined path, I thought of my beloveds who had transitioned from this world. My own transitions, as I faced and questioned my own mortality, came to mind as well. The brochure at the entrance to the labyrinth states: “Surrender to the journey with an open mind and open heart” and lists three stages of the process. “Purgation” – letting go of distractions. Next, “Illumination.” A new thought entered my mind, loud and clear, like a bell: Transformation.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017

For the third and last stage, I was to join with the sacred as I exited the walking path. I continued my silent walk to another part of the grounds and was drawn to a large marble sculpture with the title “Transformation.” Was it serendipity? Or had I merged onto the right spiritual highway? Had I joined the sacred? Perhaps. I returned for self-serve breakfast — a spread that included steel-cut oats, fruit, hardboiled eggs, homemade granola and toast — and then retreated back to my excellent digs to face the quiet for a few hours. A balcony in the ballroom has been transformed into a Jungian sandbox, where visitors are welcome to explore their internal symbolic world through the placement of figurines and totem-like artifacts found on the surrounding shelves. And there were enough books all around to fulfill a lifetime of questing. My full day of quiet included a self-serve healthy and delicious lunch and a healing massage followed by a refreshing dip in the pool and a laze in the warm afternoon sun. I watched an amber-colored sycamore leaf roll across the ground and then land in the pool and float on the surface. When is the last time you turned off your cell phone and watched a leaf? Our last supper was another delicious, healthy feast that included chicken saltimbocca, a beautiful salad and green beans. The next morning, we said our goodbyes and exchanged hugs. Most times, during my two-night stay, I hardly saw another soul except at meals. Even so, several of us forged a bond. I had rested in the splendor, comfort and sweet embrace of La Casa de Maria and I did encounter spiritual renewal. How did the healing come about? I believe by being quiet and stepping off the spinning globe for a few moments and listening. And, yes, even praying. While La Casa de Maria and its Center for Spiritual Renewal may truly be a little bit of heaven on earth, you don’t have to come here to find inner peace. But once you unplug, it certainly comes easy. v La Casa de Maria 800 El Bosque Road Santa Barbara, CA 93108 805.969.5031 www.lacasademaria.org

Jung once said,“Often the hands know how to solve a riddle with which the intellect has wrestled in vain.” The Jungian sandbox and its many totems and figurines allow for hands-on therapeutic exploration.

alifornia is filled with frosty-white wonderlands: Yosemite, Mammoth Lakes, Tahoe, the Sequoias — just to name a few. Closer to home, however, there’s a vastly different way to experience winter. It may not offer snow-covered hills and ski slopes, but Santa Cruz Island is a spectacular destination for January and February outdoor adventures. Brisk ocean breezes, sparkling blue water, world-class kayaking and scuba diving, seacliff vistas and more await those who venture out to this unique natural ecosystem and marine sanctuary a mere 20 miles from the mainland. }} JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2017

Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the five land masses — including Anacapa, San Miguel, Santa Barbara and Santa Rosa Islands — that make up Channel Islands National Park, and as such, it offers the best weather and the most to do. “Santa Cruz is the most popular island in the winter,” says Cherryl Connally of Island Packers, the authorized concessionaire for transportation to Channel Islands National Park. “There are a

Some are rugged, some are easy, but all provide a glimpse of the vegetation and animals that call the area home. “Isolation has had an impact on the wildlife here,” notes Yvonne Menard, chief of interpretation at Channel Islands National Park. Adapting to island conditions means many of the animals found here have evolved into unique, endemic species.

Island Packers offers several boat trips throughout the week in the winter months, and while inclement weather and poor sea conditions can force a cancellation, Southern California’s relatively mild winters mean there are plenty of days between storms when the crossing to Santa Cruz is a breeze. The adventure begins the moment you come aboard one of Island Packers’ large, two-

tiered catamarans. You’ll want to be bundled up to withstand the cold wind that whips by once you leave the protected environs of Ventura Harbor. But for a seagoing experience, it’s hard to beat. The chill air is invigorating, the ride feels smoother, and you’ll be well-positioned to spot dolphins, pelicans, sea lions and — if you’re lucky — whales that might appear during the hour-plus passage. Winter is gray whale season,

when these majestic giants migrate through the channel on their way to Baja, and Island Packers offers half-day whale-watching trips from December through March. These runs don’t stop at the islands, but they’re an excellent way to take in the marine wildlife. Approaching Santa Cruz in winter, you might be surprised by the sheer amount of green that carpets the island. Seasonal rains turn the
