EDITOR’S NOTE

WHY WE GIVE

v ventana

“PHILANTHROPY IS SO PERSONAL,” Vanessa Bechtel recently told me. She’s the president and CEO of the Ventura County Community Foundation, an organization whose primary function is to take care of the money that funds philanthropy, and her statement perfectly encapsulates why people do the things they do to make the world a better place. Case in point: Bechtel herself. As a preschooler, she and other students from low-income families were each given a tremendous gift: a violin, and several years of lessons. For her, it was a life changer. The discipline necessary to learn an instrument she applied to academics, and thus excelled in school. Throughout college, she earned money busking on city streets or playing in restaurants. Today, Bechtel is using her particular skillset (finance) to make a difference in her community — and in many ways it was that violin, provided by an anonymous donor, that prompted her own work in philanthropy. That’s often what drives philanthropic efforts: a moment or experience that touches someone so deeply, it propels them to take action. For Oxnard police officers Daniel Shrubb and Charles Woodruff, it was seeing so many young people full of promise going down dangerous paths. So they developed DRAGG (Drag Racing Against Gangs and Graffiti) to provide an alternative to the streets, and allow at-risk youth an opportunity to realize their potential.

NOVEMBER 2016

In the early 1970s, Nancy Merrick had the good fortune to work with Jane Goodall, studying chimpanzees at Gombe Stream Research Center in Tanzania. When she returned over three decades later, she was shocked by what she discovered: habitats shrunk by deforestation, chimpanzees extinct in four countries and population numbers declining even in the Gombe. Merrick has been on a crusade to save chimps — and their forests — ever since. Most people don’t know about the Red Cross’s Service to the Armed Forces (SAF), but this branch of the organization was critically important to Kris Meathrell. Her husband was shipboard in the Navy when she went into labor, and with the SAF’s help, he was able to get the news — and get home in time for the birth of their son. Now, Meathrell is one of the organizers for Operation: Ride for the Red, which raises money for the local SAF. These are stories about people who decided to do something big — and if they serve as inspiration, that is a wonderful thing. But no effort, however small, is wasted. Picking up litter, donating a can of food, entering a charity bike ride, giving a violin to an impoverished kid — these individual acts might seem like drops in the bucket of overwhelming need. But to someone on the receiving end, it can make an ocean of difference. “If we give what we can, it grows,” Bechtel says. “Anyone can be a philanthropist.” Wise words to live (and give) by. – Nancy D. COMMUNITY DINNER AT THE PUMPKIN PATCH TOTALLY LOCAL VC Dinner at the Pumpkin Patch is always one of Totally Local VC’s most popular Farm-to-Fork feasts, and this year’s October 13 event was no exception. The evening started with a hayride to the center fields of McGrath Brothers Great Pacific Pumpkins in Ventura, where guests enjoyed a gourmet meal prepared using the best locally grown ingredients, washed down with locally produced wine, beer and spirits. Profits from the 2016 series will be donated to the Steve Toby Scholarship Fund for Ventura County High School Students and Totally Local VC’s Agricultural Education Program.

COVER STORY THE NEW FACE OF PHILANTHROPY: As president and CEO of the Ventura County Community Foundation, Vanessa Bechtel is working to bring together donors, nonprofits and people in need to find workable solutions to the issues facing our community.

MONEY THAT MATTERS

V

Vanessa Bechtel steers the economic engine of charitable giving. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PHOTOS BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN

anessa Bechtel loves the violin. She has played since she was a child, and it’s been a constant source of joy and inspiration to her. It was also her first introduction to philanthropy. “At two years old, I was gifted a violin and lessons,” she says, explaining that an anonymous donor paid for instruments and lessons for all the children at her preschool who, like Bechtel, came from low-income families. In many ways, that violin charted the course of her life. It helped her excel academically, acting as a “catalyst” for getting into college, where she earned her B.A. at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and later an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California. It also helped her earn money busking on city streets or playing in restaurants. But that violin’s most profound impact, perhaps, was teaching Bechtel the power such a charitable gift can have. “Everything wonderful in my life came from learning to play the violin,” she says. “I’ve never stopped being grateful.” Bechtel is the president and CEO of the Ventura County Community Foundation, started in 1987 and based in Camarillo but serving the entire county. Its mission: financial management for charitable gifts. Not the warmest or fuzziest side of good

causes, but an integral part nonetheless. “Basically, we’re a financial planning institution for philanthropists,” Bechtel explains. “Many donors want to play a meaningful role in solving society’s problems, but they don’t know how to go about doing it.” That’s where VCCF steps in. For any given issue a donor wants to address — homelessness, inadequate health care or nutrition, access to education or any other problem — VCCF does the research and helps find the right people and organizations to involve, as well as the best way to put the money to work. “We help the donor identify how they want to make an impact, perform needs assessments, determine which organizations are engaged in the issue — and bring all the right people to the table,” says Bechtel. “Together we try to find a focused solution.” The organization also helps manage the investment portfolios set up for these charitable monies, both for donors and nonprofits. This is particularly important for ongoing donations, such as scholarship funds. “Philanthropy is, in some ways, an economic engine,” Bechtel explains. “We’re here to steer that engine.” }}

STRING THEORY: Playing the violin in downtown Ventura (on an instrument made in 1787), Bechtel recalls the busking days of her youth. A violin she was gifted as a child served as a catalyst for change. “It was a ticket to my future,” Bechtel says. “Everything wonderful in my life came from learning to play the violin.”

And it’s a big one. VCCF currently manages $87.5 million in net assets for hundreds of donors and 90 nonprofits. This kind of nuts-and-bolts economic work is neither glamorous nor visible — but it’s vital to keeping philanthropic legacies going in perpetuity and making sure the money goes where it’s needed most. “It’s surprisingly challenging to give away $5 million,” Bechtel notes wryly. “Knowing how to strategically give that away — it requires careful thought.” Bechtel worked in nonprofits throughout college, first at the YMCA and later in AIDS Housing Santa Barbara. “I always wanted to make the world a better place,” she says. “At first I thought I’d be a lobbyist.” But her talents lent themselves particularly well to economics, and she switched to financial planning instead, opening a wealth management firm, Monarch Wealth Strategies, in Santa Barbara. It proved to be a gateway into the work she does now. “I kind of fell into the philanthropy field,” Bechtel says. “At my financial firm, I did a lot of philanthropic planning with our clients.” It became her passion, and eventually led to a four-year stint as executive director of the Santa Barbara City College Foundation, which aimed to improve access to education. In her tenure there, she helped expand SBCCF’s donor base, growing it from $2.5 million to $7.2 million. Bechtel left SBCCF to help her husband, a portfolio manager, start his own financial firm. “I wasn’t looking for a job,” she admitted. But a friend saw VCCF’s ad looking for a new CEO (former CEO Hugh Ralston resigned in 2014) and sent it to her, saying, “This is all of your passions rolled into one.” Bechtel had her work cut out for her. When she came on in February 2015, she and her new management team discovered a host of issues: unrealistic budget projections, revenue shortfalls, poorly performing investments and enormous operating costs. She immediately set to work righting the ship, getting an independent auditor on board to review the books and working with the state Attorney General to ensure full and complete transparency. She also implemented some hard, but necessary, changes. Within the last six months, staff has been reduced from 22 to five, and the remaining employees took a 20 percent pay cut. “We had to make some tough decisions,” Bechtel admits. “But we brought our budget down from $2.6 million to under $1 million. It was a painful process, but it was done to support, strengthen and steward the funds entrusted to us. There was a lot of respect earned for taking the steps we took.” With its finances getting back on track, the next step is for Bechtel to grow VCCF’s donor base. According to her, that process is already well underway. “Around $5 million has come in recently,” she

notes. Much of that money is coming from families referred to VCCF by CPAs, financial planners and estate attorneys. “One thing I’m seeing is incredibly generous families that are new to philanthropy that are creating foundations and giving together,” she says. “We had one meeting where the whole family came in — parents, kids and grandchildren, sharing their passion and their vision. It’s really inspiring.” It’s a good start. The looming question, though, is how to keep that momentum going. Working with nonprofits throughout Ventura County (which number in the thousands) is one option. “I’d like to partner more closely with local nonprofits,” Bechtel says. “We’re doing an analysis of our donor community. What is needed? How is this effort getting sustained going forward? A community foundation should be an integral part of helping our nonprofits.” Several already come to VCCF for strategy, guidance, mentorship. The organization has partnered with the Museum of Ventura County, for example, as well as the Oxnard Boys and Girls Club, Aspiranet and Casa Pacifica. Corporations are another place where she sees potential growth. “The millennial generation is really interested in supporting companies that do good,” she explains. “So we work with corporations to help them target their giving in such a way that it actually enhances their bottom line.” Another key feature of Bechtel’s strategy: making the work of VCCF and its donors more visible. “If we can really communicate what we do, the donor base can grow. It can be a challenge because many donors are uncomfortable in the spotlight,” she notes. “but we need more people to share what they’re doing. Hearing those stories, [donors] sharing what they’re doing — that’s serving as an inspiration.” “Another thing that I think can inspire more giving,” she continues, “is education: helping people become better informed, seeing through the eyes of someone who has lived through a difficult time. Philanthropy is so personal.” But most important of all, in Bechtel’s view, is cooperation. When people from all points of the spectrum — people in need, the nonprofits that serve them, donors that want to help, others who might want to get involved, organizations like VCCF — come together, it can lead to beautiful things. “It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the volume of need, and it only seems to grow. Strategic giving requires the collective,” Bechtel says. And 18 months into her position at VCCF, she sees plenty of reason to be optimistic. “There is so much great stuff going on here in Ventura County. I am in awe of it.” v VENTURA COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION www.vccf.org

CHIMP CHAMPION

T

Nancy Merrick is saving chimpanzee habitat, one tree at a time. BY CHUCK GRAHAM

wo chimpanzees were hesitant, crossing a red dirt road. Their forest of Maesopsis, fig and mahogany trees in northwestern Uganda had been clear-cut, meaning that dense cover and food sources were running thin for these primates. As they dashed across, they crossed paths with villagers from Bulindi when a car sped around a bend. One of the chimps was struck and died. As human populations continue to swell, these stories are becoming all too common. Forests in Uganda and other African nations are shrinking,

being clear-cut for wood and for the growing of crops, putting pressure on wildlife, especially species like chimpanzees; encounters with humans increase while the chimps’ food sources dwindle. Chimpanzees are currently extinct in four African nations (Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and Gambia) and are in serious trouble in 10 other countries. A new nonprofit, spearheaded by Ventura County resident Dr. Nancy Merrick, might help jumpstart habi}} tat and chimpanzee recovery.

EARLY INSPIRATION Merrick is a doctor specializing in internal medicine, who served Ventura County for 17 years before retiring last July. But before attending Stanford University, she saw a film that would change her life. It was about Jane Goodall and her groundbreaking research with chimpanzees at Gombe Stream in Tanzania in East Africa. “I was absolutely amazed,” recalled Merrick. “I was struck by how intelligent they were and how complicated their lives are. At that time, humans considered themselves to be the only intelligent beings on the planet, so Jane Goodall’s work was revolutionary. Plus — a young woman scientist. Instantly I wanted to do the same thing.” When Merrick was a 19-year-old student at Stanford University, a dream opportunity arose. In the fall of 1971, Goodall gave a lecture in human biology. Afterward, an administrator announced that human biology majors could apply for field assistant work under Goodall for two quarters at Gombe. College credit was awarded and travel costs were covered. At the time, it was all Merrick had ever hoped for. Merrick worked with Stanford Outdoor Primate Facility chimps from 1973 to 1976. In 1985, after medical school and internal medicine training, she reconnected with Goodall in Washington, D.C., and continued working on chimp issues, particularly chimps used for AIDS research and biomedical experimentation. “I’ve always had a real passion for chimps in captivity,” said Merrick. “Zoos were really bad at that time, so we were really allies in that whole issue — and we still are.”

PHOTO BY DR. MATT MCLENNAN

HARSH REALITIES Merrick’s medical career brought her to Ventura in 1990. It would be another 18 years before she’d return to Gombe Stream, but she did, in 2008. That’s when she learned that chimps were extinct in four neighboring countries. Villages that once had only a handful of people had expanded, and their populations were now in the hundreds, even thousands. “That was the epiphany,” said Merrick, who is now devoting much of her time to the chimps of Bulindi, in western Uganda. “The population had declined even at Gombe. Many of them were gone.” It wasn’t long after that, that Merrick also met Professor Matt McLennan from Oxford. He had been studying chimps at Bulindi, and how they share the environment with people. A typical community holds anywhere from 40 to 100 chimps. At the time, the Bulindi community was already low, at 30 to 35 chimps. By 2014 it was down to 21 individuals. Once forests are cleared for wood and used for growing crops, corridors are cut off, and these social animals are stymied from interacting with other chimp communities. They also have no choice but to consume farmers’ crops. In that part of Central Africa, farmers are among the poorest in the world, with a 40 percent malnutrition rate. Farmers began setting up traps or snares to stop the chimps from ravaging their crops. “Snares are probably the biggest killer of chimps,” said Merrick, now 64. }} “They say that one in five loses a limb in that area.”

McLennan realized that villagers need trees, too, to pay for unexpected bills, so together he, Merrick and local Ugandans set up a program whereby farmers are paid not to clear-cut. The 1-year-old pilot project, called the Bulindi Chimpanzee and Community Project, involved the villagers of Bulindi keeping their children in primary and secondary school. Families that participated also received 200,000 seedlings of native trees to restore critical chimp habitat and coffee plants to enhance their household incomes. The project was designed to keep chimps out of farmers’ crops: Two wells are currently being built so that the animals don’t have to go far for water, which also reduces encounters with humans. Local conservationists monitor chimp numbers and their activities, walking the 40-square-kilometer forest. The entire project got off the ground for $20,000. “It was a win-win,” Merrick said. “We’re at the end of the first year of the project and the results have been amazing.” A CrowdRise campaign is up and running for the Bulindi Project, sponsored by the U.S.-based nonprofit Friends of Chimps. Donations are tax deductible. On her end of things, Merrick is doing everything she can to help save these endangered species by connecting the conservation of flora and fauna with humanitarian efforts. Her book Among Chimpanzees, with a foreword by Goodall, was published in 2014. It chronicles the plight of chimpanzees and other primates, extending from labs and zoos to Equatorial Africa. She also created the nonprofit Chimp Saver in May 2015. To reach its goals, the tireless Merrick is campaigning and raising funds to expand Chimp Saver’s efforts to outlying villages, continuing in the same model as at Bulindi. “Chimps are like children,” said Merrick. “It’s like they’re getting picked off one at a time. If they were actually children, we wouldn’t allow it.” v CHIMP SAVER AND THE BULINDI CHIMPANZEE AND COMMUNITY PROJECT http://www.chimpsaver.org Donations may be made through Friends of Chimps at http://friendsofchimps.org

ABOUT TOWN

PEDAL POWER: Bikers cross the finish line at the first Operation: Ride for the Red, held last year in Camarillo.

OPERATION: RIDE FOR THE RED Camarillo bike ride gives a much-needed lift to local military members. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK THE AMERICAN RED CROSS, FOUNDED BY CLARA BARTON in 1881, is well-known throughout the world for responding to and helping victims of natural disasters such as fires, floods and earthquakes. It is also known for blood drives, emergency communications and more. What many people aren’t aware of is that the Red Cross, under the guise of its Services to the Armed Forces (SAF) program, supports our men and women in uniform around the world, as well as their families at home. Last year, thanks to a few visionaries and a dedicated, creative team of volunteers, Operation: Ride for the Red kicked off to fundraise for the local chapter, which will be 100 years old next year. From deployment to return, the SAF offers important services for military members and their families. It starts with a warm sendoff with pastries and coffee. Emergency communication services keep overseas military members in touch with family in the face of big events — a serious illness or death, for example, or more joyful news, such as an impending birth. The SAF’s veterans programs and support services can be critical for those returning home (perhaps with

external or internal wounds). There’s even a monetary component, whereby SAF, partnering with military aid societies, can help provide emergency financial assistance for both active and retired military members. To bolster its SAF programs and take advantage of the area’s many excellent biking trails, last year it started a new endeavor: Operation: Ride for the Red, an annual charity bike ride. “Kevin and Di Delson came up with the original idea, brought it to Red Cross Board Member Ken Bauer, and it grew from there,” says volunteer and ride organizer Kris Meathrell. Last year 100 riders participated, donating $50-$95 each for the privilege — although military members and veterans ride for free. Riders of varying ability levels share the road with corporate teams. The full ride is 100 miles, but there are lots of options: Participants can bicycle in a 5-mile family fun ride, or choose a 30-, 50-, or 100mile loop. Rest stops are stocked with water, energy drinks and snacks along routes that start and end at the Red Cross Ventura County chapter office in Camarillo. }}

The route goes through scenic Ventura County and alongside historic military bases. For those who have the energy, there’s also a post-ride after-party, sponsored this year by music equipment company Line 6. Last year, Operation: Ride for the Red raised $25,000 to help local vets. “We’re hoping to double that figure this year,” says Meathrell. This year’s ride takes place on Saturday, Nov. 12. “It’s a lot of fun and such a great cause. We actively pursue military and veterans that ride for free,” Meathrell adds. Not up for jumping on a bicycle seat? Not a problem: You can support a rider through the online site CrowdRise, where teams compete to raise the most money. Or simply show up with your enthusiasm. “We need people to help us get ready, to cheer people when they return, and give them sandwiches and something to drink!” Meathrell says. Meathrell was pulled in to help organize the ride due to her background with the Red Cross: She worked for the organization for five years, and now volunteers. She has a very personal connection to the SAF as well. Meathrell’s husband was in the Navy while she was pregnant, and was shipboard when she went into labor. Red Cross Emergency Communications was able to contact him with the news, and he was sent home in time for the birth of their son. It’s a powerful reminder of how critical these SAF services can be. I wondered, with the prevalence of Skype, Facebook and texting, if the Red Cross emergency communications were utilized much anymore. The short answer: yes. Kelley Reszetylo, regional volunteer officer, explained: “Our messages are verified, so the military commands know that when a Red Cross message is received, that the emergency is happening in real time. The military uses our messages to determine whether or not they will grant emergency leave to a service member to come home. Many times, this means the service member is on a flight within a matter of hours to be at the bedside of a gravely ill or dying family member.” Over the last year, the local chapter (which covers 10 counties in the Central California region) sent 846 emergency communications messages, with 202 of those messages from Ventura County alone. Some military members need as much, or more, support when they return from deployment. It’s no secret that transitioning back home can be difficult. Many service members and veterans have experienced challenges readjusting into life with their families, their jobs and their communities — and SAF is there to help. Red Cross “Reconnection Workshops,” held on military bases, help returning vets cope with stress, trauma and depression, and offer anger management and communication skills. The workshops also help family members relate to their loved ones who return home after war conflict. The free, confidential workshops focus on individual and small-group discussions that enhance the likelihood of positive reconnections among family members and others in the community. They aim to help ease these transitions, and work toward the successful re-engagement of service members and veterans in civilian life. Ken Bauer was one of Ride for the Red’s founders, and is pleased that this very local effort to help bolster Ventura County’s own SAF program is catching on. “I am really excited, and it is such a pleasure to lead a great group of community volunteers who are so actively supporting the ride,” he says. “We all had a fabulous time at our Ride for the Red after-party last year.” “Our second annual Ride for the Red is a great opportunity,” Bauer continues, “to support all the tireless, local Service to Armed Forces volunteers who support our troops.” v

CHANGING GEARS DRAGG drives at-risk youth off the streets . . . and into the garage. BY KATE EDWARDS

}}

DRAGG TEAM: Sergeants Charles Woodruff (left) and Daniel Shrubb with the Thin Blue Line, a 2015 Ford Mustang built with the help of DRAGG students.

GIVING BACK

L

ast June, the Vasquez-Lopez family of Oxnard got a surprise. After receiving an invitation to come check out a new community program, they arrived at the event and discovered it was actually a graduation ceremony — but with a big twist. At the end of the ceremony, the 28 students of the 2016 Drag Racing Against Gangs and Graffiti (DRAGG) graduating class presented the family with the SUV they had restored over the course of the year. Originally a damaged trade-in at Oxnard’s Alexander GMC dealership, the car was donated to DRAGG and, with assistance from other local automotive businesses, students made the necessary engine, bodywork and interior repairs to return the car to virtually new condition. Then, after learning about the bad accident the family suffered in 2010 that left their two small children with significant injuries, the students voted to present the car to this family in need. Instilling a sense of community in its teenage participants is just one facet of DRAGG, an automotive-centric work experience program developed by Sergeants Daniel Shrubb and Charles Woodruff of the Oxnard Police Department. The officers state that their main goal was to provide at-risk youth with a unique learning experience in a safe environment that would keep them off the streets and introduce them to a possible career in the automotive industry. But in speaking with the officers, instructors and students, both past and present, it is clear that DRAGG also imparts some basic life-skill instruction. As Shrubb says about program participants, “They’re challenged with certain tasks to really find out what their capabilities are. [DRAGG] teaches them responsibility, respect [and] to value things.” DRAGG originally collaborated with and drew students from Oxnard Unified High School District schools. Starting this year, the 5-year-old program has expanded to work with the Ventura County Office of Education to attract students from throughout the county into an ROP (regional occupational program) that awards school credits for satisfactory completion of each class. As Sgt Shrubb explains, “We offer five credits per semester, so you can get 10 per year; and if we hold on to them for two years, that’s 20 whopping credits that maybe [they are] behind at school itself.” The program takes approximately 60 students per semester, and the program’s entrance requirements are not much more than a willingness to learn. Shrubb says, “Our theory has always been, if a student is walking through the doorway here, they are asking for help. It’s hard to say, ‘No.’ ” He adds that they have kids from all kinds of situations — even some on probation. Woodruff relates the tale of the student that learned about the program while being cited for driving without a license. The fellow enrolled in DRAGG and excelled. When it came time to go to court on the ticket, the citing officer went with him and told the judge about the student’s progress at DRAGG. Woodruff says, “The judge dropped the charges and then called the officer over and said, ‘Officer, let’s talk about this program. How can we get }} more kids in it?’ ”

REVVIN’ UP: DRAGG students observe as a new vehicle is brought into the garage. Working hands-on with cars like this 1967 Mercury Cougar is one of the program’s biggest draws.

Once in the program, the students are divided into teachable groups of 20 or so for each of the three afternoon classes run weekly at DRAGG’s 5,000-square-foot shop/classroom on Graves Avenue in Oxnard. The instructors, Jonathan Throckmorton, the auto shop instructor at Channel Islands H.S., and Kevin Billings, his counterpart at Oxnard H.S., then start with the basics and run through such topics as shop safety and tool recognition before moving on to actual repair instruction. (Today, only three of Oxnard’s seven high schools offer auto repair classes. Such programs fell victim to budget cuts long ago.) Along the way, students study topics ranging from a broad history of the car — from the combustion engine on up to all-electric — to economics, such as the real costs of financing a car purchase. The DRAGG staff always makes sure to reference modern trends and current events wherever possible, to keep the teaching relevant. Referring to the high-speed street crash that took the life of Paul Walker from the Fast and Furious film franchise, Shrubb states, “What a great teachable moment. Unfortunate what happened, but street racing is just a bad thing in every community, and what a teachable moment it was — and very real to these students.” DRAGG students also take field trips that are sometimes automotive industry-related — and sometimes not. Take, for example, the jail tours. Shrubb says, “We run ’em through and say, ‘Hey, check it out, this is what it’s like inside!’ That’s a big learning moment for everyone. All the senses are involved at that point. Not only sight, but they’re smelling what it’s like in there too.” Other trips have included a surprise outing to the Winternationals drag races in Pomona. They were given tickets by Lucas Oil, a DRAGG sponsor (and, as it turns out, a major sponsor of the event itself). Woodruff remembers, “We thought, ‘OK, never been here, [the seats] must be way at the top.’ They were in the Lucas Oil suite! We got to take the kids into the Lucas Oil suite, right behind the starting line! To see the look on the kids’ faces and to be a part of it — that was great.” Regarding funding for DRAGG, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit 48

2016

organization, Shrubb notes that people assume the program is somehow connected to and/or funded by his employers. He says, “People think, ‘It’s the police department! It’s the city!’ But we are completely separate. This program is funded on its own and receives no government funding.” Instead, DRAGG relies on grants and donations of cash and products from local citizens as well as local businesses like Borla Performance Industries, Commercial Auto Body, dealerships and tow yards. The program has also received sponsor help from larger entities such as Ford and American Muscle, as DRAGG students have also assisted with several high-performance car builds. This includes the popular and spectacular 500-horsepower 2015 Ford Mustang known as the “Thin Blue Line” that appeared at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas as well as the 2016 Barrett-Jackson classic car auction. According to Shrubb, roughly 50 percent of DRAGG graduates have gone on to careers in the automotive industry, while others have gone into nursing and law enforcement. Many have received tuition help from DRAGG, which provides scholarship money to its graduates who continue their education. One graduate, Misael Robles (Class of 2012), attended Ventura College and is now a parts tester at BMW of North America. Another, Jose Covarrubias (Class of 2013), is working toward opening his own body shop. Current DRAGG student Emilio Casteneda (Class of 2017) plans to take advantage of one of the scholarships newly offered to DRAGG graduates by the Universal Technical Institute, a national automotive technician training school, in order to further pursue his dream of someday becoming an automotive engineer. A dream that really took shape thanks to a couple of Oxnard police officers who just wanted to use cars to make a difference in the lives of local youth. v DRAG RACING AGAINST GANGS AND GRAFFITI 805.973.7244 www.draggteam.org
