he restaurant world is

changing, and it’s not just the menu. The people bringing those menus to the masses — executive chefs, chefs de cuisine and chefs/owners — are getting more diverse, and more women are showing up in high-level positions than ever before. Which isn’t to say there’s equal representation across the board: According to a recent Bloomberg study, women occupy just 6.3 percent, or 10 out of 160 head chef positions at 15 prominent U.S. restaurant groups. But with women chefs like Susan Feniger, Barbara Smith, Suzanne Tracht and Cristeta Comerford breaking barriers in the culinary world, it’s safe to assume those numbers will rise. Cathie Moreno helped start the gastropub revolution when she opened The Kitchen on A in 2010. “I am a craft beer lover, and I’m also a hamburger lover,” she says. “[At the time] there was nothing here with craft beers and food in Oxnard.” Burgers and brews: It’s hard to get more stereotypically male than that. But that never posed a problem for Moreno: “I usually didn’t notice it, and when I did, it didn’t bother me.” In her downtown Oxnard location, she points to other female chefs — Michelle Kenney (her sister) of La Dolce Vita and Magda Weydt of Fresh and Fabulous — who inspire and support her. “We have a nice camaraderie between restaurants. … It’s amicable and fun.” That’s one of the aspects of the local dining scene that Cindy Liu of LooHoo’s Asian Comfort Food appreciates. “I like that it’s so collaborative,” she explains. “I do think that women do things differently than men. The story that’s coming out is one of collaboration instead of catfights.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

Increasingly, that story is playing out in the media, and some local chefs think that’s been a game changer. “I think things are changing partly because of cooking shows on TV,” said La Dolce Vita chef/owner Michelle Kenney. The visibility of Gina Neely, Giada De Laurentiis, Ina Garten and other celebrity chefs — as well as the popularity of competitions like Top Chef and Iron Chef — have shown women that a career in food is possible. As Liu says, “I just think women chefs are better represented on TV.” What kept women from taking up the toque in decades past? Susan Coulter of Feast Bistro in Ojai notes that the unique demands of the industry were not particularly welcoming to women. “Historically in restaurants, you would work for someone and maybe they gave you room and board, but you didn’t get paid,” she says. “That environment was probably a little harder for women. Particularly if you wanted a family.” But changing social mores have opened up opportunities for women across the board. “Now, women juggle a lot more — and they’re showing up in kitchens and as owners,” noted Coulter “I’ve been cooking professionally for 30 years, and I’ve seen great growth in the number of women in the kitchen.”

here are few things as divisive as barbeque, at least within the states occupying the barbeque belt of the American south. Texas has its brisket, Tennessee its pulled pork and so on. Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill has its origins in Ventura County, too, with its first location in Moorpark, and recently a chain from Texas, Dickey’s BBQ, opened up shop in Ventura. ost everyone can define what makes a good dining experience. While expectations might shift from person to person, food quality, good service and ambience are important factors for culinary pleasure. Ventura County has a lot of great places to dine that also offer fun outdoor dining. When looking for the perfect place to appease your palate and your senses, the Shoals Restaurant at The Cliff House Inn is unique. The indoor and outdoor tables overlook the pool and dramatic crashing waves as dolphins and whales pass by while people enjoy a fabulous menu. Foods like: Sicilian-style Australian rack of lamb, grilled salmon filet or its famous Banana Reef — sautéed bananas in rum and brown sugar poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream and served with a homemade reef-inspired almond cookie. Serving a lot of organic produce and fresh seafood, Shoals Restaurant is ambience personified. While Ojai is casual and unpretentious, make no mistake about it — locals are committed to relaxed, healthy, low-key living and strive to keep it that way. Dining in Ojai makes a great escape. It is hard to believe that it is only an hour and a half from Los Angeles, and just 20 minutes from Downtown Ventura. Some say the popular hippy town is in somewhat of a time warp, but either way, Ojai is a great place for local Ventura County residents to eat.
