ith all that rain arriving this past winter, there’s a throng of reasons why you should get out and hit the trail. Late rains leading into April and May are extending a robust wildflower superbloom. Wildlife sightings will increase, too. Water is life, and everything from a bounty of butterflies and birds to large herds of black-tailed deer and tule elk can be enjoyed from the trail. All you have to do is get to the trailhead. Here are three hikes that cover all the bases for memorable treks.
WIND WOLVES PRESERVE — SAN EMIGDIO CANYON TRAIL 6.5 miles round trip Easy-moderate/kid-friendly
Straddling the northern fringe of Ventura County, the Wind Wolves Preserve is the largest nonprofit preserve system in California. Located on Highway 166, Wind Wolves is unique to say the least. The transverse ranges, coast ranges, Sierra Nevada, western Mojave Desert and San Joaquin Valley all converge here at Wind Wolves with elevations ranging from 640 feet to just over 6,000 feet. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14
WIND WOLVES PRESERVE: The San Emigdio Canyon Trail is moderately easy, making it perfect for pint-sized nature enthusiasts.

The preserve includes the entire San Emigdio Land Grant, once owned by explorer John C. Fremont. San Emigdio Canyon Trail is a 6.5-mile round-trip walk into the heart of the canyon. I suggest hiking the left side of the canyon in the morning, crisscrossing the creek to the Reflection Pond connector. Cross over the creek one more time before hiking the right side of the canyon. The canyon itself is very impressive. It really widens as you hike toward the Reflection Pond Ad Proof connector as a broad plain sweeps across the canyon floor. Y
ear in and year out the Pacific Ocean proves to be our most consistent summertime aquatic playground. Beaches are crowded with those looking to ditch those perpetual inland heat waves and cool off under overcast skies and a refreshing ocean swim. This summer, though, the ocean won’t be the only option. Last winter’s steady rains proved to be a real drought buster. Creeks and rivers that had been dry and dormant for years came to life and flowed again. Water levels in lakes that had reached their lowest levels in decades were partially replenished and rose again.
PADDLING IN PARADISE: Pretty Lake Casitas offers beautiful views, a plethora of wildlife and excellent fishing, too.

FAMILY FUN TIME Getting out and about with the kids this summer BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | NANCY@VCREPORTER.COM
Summertime means long days, plenty of sunshine and weeks on end of kids underfoot. Don’t panic — plan. Build your days around the many family-friendly adventures just waiting for you and your children around the county. Here are a few ideas to get you started. GET WET
RIDE THE RAILS
When the mercury rises, bring internal temperatures down at the Pleasant Valley Aquatic Center. Beloved for its water exercise classes and lap swimming offered year round, in the summer it becomes the hot spot for cooling off, with a 75-foot-long pool, a diving board and a 65-foot spiral waterslide. Recreational swim hours are offered seven days a week, but for something more structured, consider the Pirate and Mermaid Camp for young children and the Junior Lifeguard Program for older kids.
Kids love trains, and our local railway company boasts enough activities to keep parents entertained, too! Whether it’s a scenic ride through an avocado orchard or a sweet excursion to a local honey farm, the Fillmore & Western provides a fun and unique way to explore the Heritage Valley. Special rides for Father’s Day and the Fourth of July are very popular, so book early. And check the schedule for the ever-popular Murder Mystery Dinner Trains, offered monthly during the summer.

INTO THE DEEP
BLUE
Spearfishing in the Santa Barbara Channel BY MATT DAVIDSON
I
watch my flasher slowly sink into the deep blue water. Taking a deep, full breath, I prepare to follow. My flasher is going to another world. Freediving gets you there. This world is sublime, relaxing and euphoric, unique to this earth. It can connect you more deeply to the other world. Here, I am in liquid outer space, gliding through the water, weightless, with nothing surrounding me, no reference to direction or dimensions, neither walls nor floors, only the foil-like surface above, disappearing from vision as I slip deeper into the blue. The surface now a flicker of light at the edge of my view, my senses are heightened, my tensions gone, my mind is recording, taking note of every detail of life in the water engulfing me. In my peripheral vision I see a school of yellowtail rapidly approaching. I pivot my fins slowly, leveling out my descent. Suddenly, below me, a huge yellowtail swims languid, broadside towards my flasher. I lift my speargun for a moment, methodically tracking the fish . . . just enough time. Snap! I pull the trigger. The yellowtail bursts away,
leaving a disappearing trail of taut yellow spectra, as far as I can see into blue water. My reel is spinning fast, its content quickly dissipating. I keep it tethered, brusquely kicking away from it toward a safe return to the surface. Time is in slow motion; one big kick . . . another . . . another . . . and another. Adrenaline rushes as my head breaks the surface. I tighten the drag, a resounding “WOO HOOO!” I pull the fish up from depth, carefully cleaning my catch to ensure the best tasting fillets, thankful for this gift of life. In its entirety, spearfishing is much more than a sport. It is a holistic experience with the connections ranging from the physical aspect — its focus on breathing, active relaxation, the rhythm of your catch and the rhythm of the ocean. The thread that binds these aspects of spearfishing is the act and intention of harvesting your own sustenance. It can give you a deeper appreciation of where our food comes from and the amount of effort it takes to put one fish on the table. Where does it come from? It comes from that part within you that longs for a connection to life, in the blue.
