LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
I realized my passion at the age of 14.
I took notice of this intrinsic passion to merge colors, shapes, textures and patterns to create a welcoming and pleasant space. At that time, I never questioned why, I just knew that I loved doing it. It brought me joy. It was a couple years later I realized that what I wanted to become was called an Interior Designer. After high school, I went to college and was able to attract the perfect job selling furniture at a local fine furniture store. I loved it. I loved the people, the showroom...everything. In 2001, I received my Bachelors in Fine Arts and Interior Design and felt ready to spread my wings, move to a larger city and increase my knowledge in the field of Interior Design. I moved to Denver and nailed my first interview for a Sales Designer position at an upscale furniture store.
The first year was great. But I felt as if I was a bird in a cage. It took me a couple more wearisome years in the shadows of retail sales, feeling as though my life was becoming unimportant and quite mundane. I came home one day and expressed to Eric how I was feeling. Athough he was already aware, I told him I was tired, uninspired and stressed out. That’s when he proposed the idea of me starting my own company. It was exactly what I needed to hear. I always knew I wanted to, but I never felt “ready”. And when those words came out of his mouth, I felt ready. I was excited and admittedly, I was scared. How would I begin? What would I call my company? How would I attract clients? How much would I charge? I had never been in the drivers’ seat before and I was afraid to accelerate. But the most vivid memory of that day in 2006, is how making that choice made me feel. I felt powerful. I was able to choose a different path. A path of indepence. A path where I could decide my own worth. A rewarding, and sometimes risky path, where I was 100% accountable for my actions. My purpose is to create. My purpose is also to light the fire within. I was fortunate to know what lit me up at 14. I just didn’t understand when the spark would ignite and how the fire would burn. What passion is burning inside of you? I hope my story and this poem entitled, “The Fire Inside You” by Nikita Gill inspires you.
“There is enough fire inside you to put all of hell to shame, but you are pretending to be water for someone who is too afraid to handle the dragons in your belly. Stop crushing the thing that makes you. Embrace the flames. Be whole again for yourself and no one else.” 18 VENTRE

A 2008 study showed that 47% said Environmental concerns were a factor in choosing a vegetarian diet. An even larger number claim to follow a mostly “vegetarian-inclined diet.” The Kleins and Haunert have tapped into that base to make it easier for those vegetarians and vegans to find accommodations that fit their lifestyle. It’s a simple as visiting their website and clicking, “find a VeggieHotel.” According to chooseveg.com, vegetarianism reduces your impact on climate change, rainforest destruction, and pollution. “Nearly 80% of land deforested in the Amazon is now used as cattle pasture.”

THE RISE OF
WOMEN IN BUSINESS Article written by Jeni Tetamore
There is a myth, almost an urban legend, which would have us believe that women-in-business is relatively new, and that women are not known throughout the course of history to have been business owners, entrepreneurs, or industrialists. In the following pages, we’ll see why that’s wrong.

She finds wool and flax and busily spins it. […] She goes out to inspect a field and buys it; with her earnings she plants a vineyard. […] She makes belted linen garments and sashes to sell to the merchants. This is a woman who thrived in home industry, put others to work for her, and the proverb tells us she became quite wealthy in the process. It’s clear, regardless of gender, that if you are thinking of starting a business, then you need to be prepared to multi-task, have your finger on a wide variety of skills, and work well under pressure. There are also a variety of studies demonstrating that this is where women thrive, explaining why 51% of our current start-ups have women as the head or a majority investor as we revealed earlier. If you think you might be the next big thing in the Rise of Women in Business, think about these five things: 1. Women are better at taking calculated risks 2. Women are less prone to over-confidence 3. Women are more ambitious 4. Women are more likely to take the long-term view 5. Women succeed despite facing more barriers than their male counterparts And, yet, the perception holds, that women can’t or won’t enter into business. It’s time to put that falsity to rest once and for all. Madam C.J. Walker was an orphaned African-American woman, the daughter of former slaves, and going bald. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. A place where campsites and hiking trails abound. So my family did what many other PNW families did come Summer - cram the station wagon full of tents, sleeping bags, coolers and all the goods for making the perfect s’more, and headed to the wilderness. S’mores are part of my childhood, and more specifically, part of my most cherished memories.

Ladies, imagine a sustainable product that could replace your need for tampons and pads. A stylish and comfortable pair of underwear that works as a double agent to keep you clean and dry during you’re menstrual cycle. THINX does just that! “Every pair of THINX has a top layer that wicks all liquid into a thin absorption layer right beneath, so that you feel super dry. This way you can wear’em all day long.” THINX women’s underwear are designed, by women in New York City, to absorb the liquid while keeping you dry and feeling clean. THINX are made in a family run factory in Sri Lanka that gives back by being committed to empowering the women they employ with education and training. 44 VENTRE

“By reimagining feminine hygiene products to provide support, comfort, confidence, and peace of mind, we aim to eliminate shame, empowering women around the world.”
THINX can be worn in addition to tampons or pads; and yes, even as an alternative! THINX is also working towards a greater goal. They have partnered with AFRIpads in Uganda, which trains women to work for themselves making and selling reusable pads. Each pair of underwear you purchase helps to fund this cause. This cause in turn give girls access to protection during their cycle to help prevent them from missing school. According to the article, Women can Bleed Green on alternet.org, a woman throws away 250 to 300 pounds of feminine hygiene products in her lifetime. In addition the Ocean Conservancy found that tampon applicators made up 2.2% of debris on U.S. coastlines.
Consider all the waste that could be avoided by purchasing and wearing THINX.

THE INSIDE JOB
ANALYZING A
BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
B
with Eric Lipsey CEO, Entrepreneur | EricLipsey.com
Bringing on a business partner might be the best strategic move for you. It could also be your downfall. When considering a partner, we are quick to take factors into consideration such as personal assets and ability to do a job. What often isn’t taken into consideration is personality. Personality can be the most crucial aspect a partner brings to the table. Are they effective communicators? How strong is there work ethic? How do they respond to adversity? What do they hope to accomplish through the business partnership? These are often the unasked questions that can come back to haunt us.
I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, “the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.” Because both hands belong to the same body, you can see why this is problematic. Effective communication is key to any good partnership. Effective communications takes away a lot of the guesswork. A partnership can be great because you don’t have to do everything; however, you should still be in the loop. The benefit of having a partner is about more than sharing the workload. Communicating

effectively with your partner allows you to get feedback and prevent oversight. Examine how well your potential partner communicates. When things get tough, and they usually do, will your partner throw in the towel or roll up his or her sleeves. This is good to know because you may find yourself wanting to move forward while your partner wants out. You may be willing to move forward alone, but you may not possess the critical skill or talent that your partner brings to the table. Assessing your partner’s level of perseverance may be difficult, because some things you simply don’t know until you’re in the situation. The only thing you can do up front is ask him or her about situations of adversity that they’ve had to deal with and examine how they responded. Past behavior is often a precursor to future performance. Does your partner want to build up and cash out as soon as possible? Is it a work of heart (meaning they are in it for the long haul)? Understanding this aspect is important because you may not be in a position to
buy your partner out and they may turn to an outside buyer. If an outside buyer or investor purchases his or her percentage of ownership, you’re now in a partnership with someone with whom you may not want to work. You might be stuck with them unless you sell also. Some entrepreneurs begin with an unrealistic ideal about what a startup is like. Many think that their skill alone will be enough. Truth be told, it often isn’t. You can be the best at what you do, but you’d better be ready to put in the work and learn things you’d never considered, such as marketing, accounting, etc. In the beginning stages, you’re often doing almost, if not everything for you business. This stage of development will often require far more than the typical eight-hour workday. To top it off, you won’t get paid overtime and consider yourself blessed if you make enough to get a paycheck at all. As a mentor of mine once said, “The good thing about being a business owner is that you only have to work half days and you get to decide which 12 hours that will be.” It’s important that your partner understands this factor. If
“This is good to know because you may find yourself wanting to move forward while your partner wants out.”
they come in thinking they’ll have more free time to play golf, both of you may be headed towards disappointment. Who’s doing what? This is usually covered in an operating agreement. Can the potential partner respect your position, which could very well be their boss? Do you plan to give them free reign or do you plan to oversee every process. Trust me on this; I can tell you from experience this isn’t overthinking. Even if you’re in a 50/50 partnership, boundaries will have to be set.
Don’t allow these questions to stop you from seeking a business partner. They can be very instrumental in helping you reach your goal. The purpose of this writing is intended to protect you from getting into a relationship with someone who could possibly be more of a hindrance than a helper. There is no way to predict the future. People tend to change over time. However, doing a little analysis ahead of time can help to avoid costly pitfalls.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t add this final portion. Establish a rescission period. A rescission period allows you time to examine the potential partner. You can establish a rescission period for three months, six months, a year or more if it seems appropriate. The purpose of this time is to determine if you can work well with this person before making it permanent.

WOMEN & MONEY
the GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY with Kristen Judd
There is a bit of a crisis going on for women and money. Don’t allow the title doesn’t scare you off. If you are a woman, have women in your life or you like women, this is written for you. THE GOOD: • By 2028, women are expected to out-earn men • Women control $20 trillion in spending and $14 trillion in personal wealth • Women represent 47% of the general workforce • More women have Bachelor’s degrees than men • Women start businesses at a rate of 1.5 times more than men • There are nine million women-owned companies in the US With all of the great things happening for women, why are we not seeing the shift? It could possibly take a generation or two to really see this wave of change. Right now, we’re seeing huge problems when it comes to women and money.
We have some hills to climb. Whether these situations are completely out of our control or we make the choice to stay home, it leaves us in a bit of a pickle, especially when life shows up. We know it by names like job loss, divorce, serious illness or death of a spouse. 66 percent of women ages 40 to 79 have to deal with a major financial crisis of this sort. Planning: We have to be leaders in our household when it comes to being prepared financially. As expressed above, we are making more money than ever, starting more businesses than ever and 80% of us are in charge of making the primary financial decisions in the household. 80 – 90% of us will bear sole financial responsibility for the household at some point in our lives, whether it is from divorce or death.
THE BAD: • Women are generally outlive men by roughly 8 years • The average age of widowhood is 55 years old • Women are more likely to be single parents • Women often earn less than $638.00 per week vs $798.00 per week for men • The average women spends 15% of her working years outside of the workforce caring for children or elderly parents vs. 1.6% for men
THE UGLY: Financial services have primarily been a male dominated industry, men who talked to men. They speak male and well, we usually don’t. As the old saying goes, “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus.” Quite honestly, based on the issues outlined in the bad section, our financial needs are very different than that of men. They often can’t relate. There’s no wonder women have not felt comfortable talking to a financial representative.

Think Mediterranean resort vibrations with beach club Rivera decor minus the blue blood attitude. It’s Santa Monica after all, so everyone’s on their best behavior to win you over. Our pursuit to ferret out cool and “in the know places” brought us to the doorstep of Hotel Casa del Mar, just a crab cake’s throw from the beach. This crab cake is much more delectable than the one you make at home, so do savor it more responsibly. With a sleight of hand, the culinary team here served up a Lobster Club with lemon aioli and Steak Cobb Salad that made two lifelong fans. As the Croque Monsieur, various pizzas and the like passed our table, future returns to this little slice of heaven became inevitable. Yellowtail and Steamed Maine Mussels as a starter made it near impossible to delve into the desserts. Total rookie mistake. Planet Hollywood lies at the heartbeat of Vegas entertainment and plays host to headliners Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Gordie Brown, and The Backstreet Boys, to name a few. After all, who’s here to watch TV in the room all night? To what degree can we keep this party going we asked ourselves. Answer: step outside your suite and the possibilities are endless. Between a swanky soaking tub wrapped in marble and large cityscape murals masked as closets, Planet Hollywood doesn’t require you to go far for adventure. Day two: After a combo of gambling downstairs, kissing strangers at 2 am and a belly full of Gordon Ramsay burgers, we may have overshot it just a bit. A nap in between parties is paramount and an attentive staff ensures your suite is properly appointed for just that purpose, Ventre can give you that. The bedding says come hither and the do not disturb sign was observed by all. Your designer wallet may be lighter after a few days in Vegas, but the memories will be quite full. 84 VENTRE

n Vegas, lunch is a verb.
Self control has expired by the time you get through this menu of pub bites, dipped chocolates, cakes and elaborate cocktails served in giant goblets. Instagramworthy moments are about to be made and a car service will definitely be needed to cart you back to the hotel. The crazy cool decor takes its cues from the glam of Vegas with bold striped chairs and chandeliers everywhere. The menu takes a good 20 minutes to navigate, so give yourself some time. Whether in the mood for savory crepes, red velvet pancakes, pizza or a turkey burger, this theatrical menu holds the key to satisfying your deep hunger for a hearty meal. Grass-fed Angus beef burgers topped with mac and cheese and smoked applewood bacon on a brioche bun made these two cranky travelers friendly bedfellows again. A return for ladies night on the upper level of the chocolate lounge has a unique banshee call unto itself.

on your radar for your next Vegas excursion. We at VENTRE believe that you need an experience with some heart and soul behind it. The hunt to get your mind, body and soul realigned in Vegas has a co-pilot! Canyon Ranch Spa is one of those “pinch me “ moments. 134,000 square feet and a labyrinth of sedative colors and silence transport you to another place. While a plethora of spa treatments and salon services may attract many, the unique Crystal Steam Room, the multi-sensory experience of the Wave Room, and the classic (immaculate clean) dry heat sauna should attract the rest. A large, well designed co-ed conservatory is the middle ground for the male and female guests. Make no mistake, the oceanfront is the ideal destination for a family vacation. In this issue, we share with you where we stayed during our journey to the white sandy beaches of San Diego and on our return, our two-night stay in sunny Las Vegas. You’re in for a west-coast treat. Do you know what I like most about road trips? It’s the only opportunity where you can witness, ground level, the beautiful terrain this earth has to offer. The view from an airplane can be breathtaking, yes, but there’s something unforgettable about traveling down an open road. There’s freedom in it. Not to mention the extended period of time available to build a deeper connection with those whom you’re traveling with. It also provides you the time you’ve been wanting to catch up on that good book or to learn more on the resort where you’ll be staying once you reach your destination. In the next few pages, you’ll understand why we chose Kona Kai Resort & Spa for our getaway destination.

It felt as if we were emerged in an endless landscape painting. The views were captivating. A few miles down the road and Ajna had her first glance of the massive ocean and screamed (very loudly) with excitement, “It’s amazing!” she exclaimed, “It never ends!” There is nothing better in life than experiencing something majestic for the first time. It was then I realized this family vacation would be unforgettable. Our daughter may or may not remember a gift she was given on her 5th birthday, but I guarantee she will remember the summer her mommy and daddy took her to see the ocean.
EXPLORATION
As soon as she placed her little toes in the cool saltwater, she was overjoyed. Her favorite part was how the waves were “chasing” her back and forth, to and from the shore. At that moment, I knew it was going to be hard to pull her away. It took her forty-five minutes and a bribe to convince her to want to leave. Thank goodness Kona Kai had a “Have S’More Fun” Marshmallow Roasting Kit waiting for us back at the resort. We all know the ocean exists, but seeing and feeling it enables us to appreciate its mysteriousness and the desire to share it with others.

After we ate, we hopped in our suits, went for a swim and as the temperature began to drop, we took advantage of the hot tub overlooking the marina. But the evening wasn’t over yet. Seven year olds never forget. She reminded us that there was an untouched 1927 S’mores Kit waiting to be opened and enjoyed. We changed into our warmer clothes and made our way to the one of the firepits. We reminisced about our exciting day, laughed and cuddled. we’re here to enlighten you. In this day and age, we are all guilty of placing nineinch screens of flashing lights to entertain our children. Las Vegas is, well, a little bigger screen that gets to be enjoyed by all. If you’ve been there, then you know the illuminations on the strip are quite impressive. On this particular excursion, we desired to experience the vintage, more artistic side of Las Vegas, so we chose to stay downtown at The Plaza Hotel. In February 2017, the Plaza debuted two 21-story murals by internationally known artists, Shepard Fairey and D*Face on its North Tower. The Plaza is the tallest building Fairey has painted on and his “Cultivate Harmony” mural is visible from multiple vantage points in downtown. D*Face’s “Behind Closed Doors” is not only his fifth mural in Downtown Las Vegas, but his largest to date.
The Plaza’s newly renovated pool area is the perfect oasis on those 100 degree desert days. What is it about a nice hotel room that makes you never want to leave? And what causes that burning desire to run and leap onto the freshly washed and decorated bed (you know you’ve done it)? We know what it is...it’s the feeling of freedom. Knowing that during those few days, while you’re on vacation, it’s more acceptable to think and act without restraint. To take risks! To live life on the edge! In Vegas, you’re encouraged to try your luck at Black Jack, or take one more trip to the buffet. It’s okay to treat yourself at a boutique or spa and it’s completely acceptable to allow others to eagerly serve you. And as an entreprenuers, we are familiar with risks. Life is too short to not take any. But when you stay downtown, the only risk you shouldn’t take is staying somewhere other than The Plaza.

Catering to midcentury modern enthusiasts, as well as lovers of vintage clothes and collectors of antiques of all kinds, the shops include a warehouse full of antiques with

fter being taken away by the immaculate view of Fremont Street, we settled in our plush, metallic blue chairs. The combination of the gold vintageinspired chandeliers and the soft blue velvet cushions, I felt as if we time-lapsed to 1920. The staff was eager to please and the ambiance was electric. The chef prepared a palate-pleasing fourcourse meal (and vegetarian per our request) boasting with flavor. It started with heirloom tomatoes topped with arugula drizzed with a balsalmic reduction, tuffle oil and honey. Up next were spinach stuffed mushrooms with Daiya cheese and corn hummus. Might I add, if this food were a business then our tastebuds were fully invested. For the main course: pan seared herb grits and fresh grilled veggies with red pepper remoulade. Where else can you go and stay up as late as you want and it’s totally acceptable to take several naps all throughout the day? Where else can you go and have a one-sided conversation with a celebrity, while your daughter is being serenaded by Bruno Mars? Where else can you experience captivating architecture, ride a 55-story ferris wheel, fly in the sky on a zip-line, enjoy a puppet show and take an indoor (or outdoor) Venetian boat ride? Exactly! THAT’S why we chose Las Vegas.

INTIMATE INVESTMENTS
INTIMATE INVESTMENTS go rate yourself by Emily Moore If people were given ratings like businesses, we may see a radical change in the way we behave and treat others. I recently stumbled across a TV series called Black Mirror, of which one of the episodes depicted our state of social media platforms with a futuristic twist. In this particular episode, people were given scores based on their personal interactions, what they did to give back to the community, and of course, human nature’s need for popularity also influenced your rating. If you wanted to live a good life, you had to maintain a certain score to be qualified for jobs, to live in certain communities, and pretty much everything in between. This had nothing to do with political affiliations, gender, race, or sexual preferences, your score was only based on how you treated others. While some of it was disheartening, showing how ugly and judgmental people can be towards each other, it did touch on one important point that has not left my mind. If the world was watching our every move, it may just shape up people’s act. If we merely couldn’t function in society without doing good, would that bring out the good in every one of us? Ratings shape the rest of our realities with credit scores, IQ’s, insurance, interest rates, GPA’s, referrals from previous employers and customers, business ratings and product ratings. Why have these systems been put in place? The better the rating, the better chance we have of getting a quality product or experience with an ethical company or individual. If an individual was rated an F, would you be less likely to do business with them? The same goes for a company or product. A poor rating might make
you rethink engaging in business. It all boils down to performance, decisions, and the will to work hard, making necessary changes to improve the outcome. When there’s a will, there’s a way. Ratings steer many decisions, but is it always fair? Do we tend to only focus on the bad information or focus on recognizing the good? Did you know that Einstein’s mother was told that her son had a learning disability? Rather than his Mom believing that opinion, she told her baby that he was one of kind, and very special. It’s amazing how recognizing the good in others and expressing it can change the entire course of someone’s life. Truth is, the quality of the energy with which we surround ourselves, affects our daily mood, interactions, family life, work and results. We must learn to raise our vibrational frequency and rid our minds of the negativity that plagues our energy. Television, social media and other forms of communication are great examples. Give more compliments, forgive often, take the time to recognizing a stranger for their excellence, write more positive reviews, volunteer, donate, and smile when you make eye contact with someone passing. With the lightning speed that technology continues to advance, there may come a day when the world starts a rating system for people, just like this episode had. If so, how would you rate yourself ? Nobody knows for sure what the future of technology holds, but I do know that anyone can make a difference with their daily decisions. We are imperfect, but the law of attraction will work for us, and whatever energy we choose to exude can be contagious. No matter what happens, remember, the night has a million eyes, imagine what the day might see.

JUST BEAN YOURSELF
As the world’s most prolific big wave surfer, Laird Hamilton travels the world in search of the gnarliest waves and the most epic rides. In order to succeed and to survive the occasional, lung-crushing 70-foot wall of water, Laird needs razor-sharp focus, untapped energy, and exceptional endurance. He gets all three from the power-packed ingredients he puts into every Laird Superfood product. “My biggest concern as a businessman – what keeps me up a night – is the consistency and quality of the products that are a reflection of who I am,” Laird says. “I need products that are authentic to who I am, and what I believe in… I believe in innovation and authenticity. I believe that the foods you eat should be as good for the earth as they are for you. And I believe that food should enable you to perform at the highest level, no matter what you’re doing.” The result is Laird Superfood Creamer, a non-dairy, GMO-free, gluten-free, vegan alternative to traditional creamers. Instead of butter, Laird’s powdered creamer is a mix of healthy oils, coconut milk, coconut nectar and Aquamin, nature’s best source of calcium. It’s a tasty, nutrient-dense beverage booster that will transform your morning coffee into an important part of a healthy diet. 140 VENTRE

UNLIFE is an invite-only gathering of the nations top businessmen, influencers, misfits and entrepreneurs, all trying to kick a little dent into history. Come join 30 hand selected ruckusmakers for a weekend designed to amplify, disrupt, inspire, and build community. This is an intimate group event - You will speak up and be heard, you will be surrounded by people eager to learn and to share what they’ve learned in a completely unfiltered and raw setting. We’ll start Friday night and end Sunday around noon. This 3 day leadership retreat is intentionally designed for aggressive personalities with a desire to build intentional community, disrupt the status quo, and have real life changing impact through their work. UNLIFE was started because In 2013, for the Summer marketing campaign for RUCKUS, we thew a series of 3 Pool Parties in conjunction with RedBull. They were amazing. Thousands of people came, there was free food, drinks, national headlining acts for music, but at the end of the third party, we were driving away and had one of the most honest conversations as a brand we have ever had... We simply said “FOR WHAT?!” Don’t get us wrong, they were great parties, and we the brand got a ton of “impressions” (whatever that means), but at the end of it all, we were left feeling extremely

empty, and honestly, kind of worthless. We had raised a ton of money and thrown some huge parties. That was it. We weren’t helping anyone, we weren’t building DEEP or MEANINGFUL relationships or community. We were simply arranging convenient and shallow entertainment, nothing more. We knew that as a brand, as a company, and as responsible business owners and leaders, we had to develop something more. We had to develop something that actually meant something. At the core of what RUCKUS is, we want to only be about 2 things: 1) Bringing hope and confidence into a broken world. 2) Building Community. So - we switched our Summer marketing campaign the following year on its head (honestly, that’s probably giving ourselves too much credit, it was more of an experiment than anything). We set out to grow DEEP within our community and clientele, not WIDE. We thought; What would happen - if instead of growing shallow with 3 thousand people, we brought together some of the best leaders, trendsetters, and ruckusmakers we know and grow DEEP with only 30 people. A Manhattan Project of the new age. And with that, the Ruckus UNLIFE Retreat was born.
“If you are young, hungry, and want to be inspired by some of the best disrupters across all mountains of thought, this is the retreat for you” — Daniel Epstein UNreasonable Group

When we first heard this quote, we knew we had to do something. We started Bombas to make an impact on our community here in the U.S. For every pair you purchase, we donate a pair to someone in need.
(and counting)
PAIRS DONATED
Our company is built from the ground up around the idea of sock donations. The more socks we sell, the more we donate. And as we grow, our giving and community efforts will continue to grow right alongside us. One pair purchased = One pair donated.
DESIGNED FOR DONATION
People ask us all the time if we donate the same socks that we sell. The answer is no, we donate something special. Working closely with our giving partners, we engineered a sock to specifically meet the needs of people who don’t have the luxury of putting on a clean pair of socks every day. An anti-microbial treatment ensures they don’t need to be washed as often, and reinforced seams and darker colors give them greater durability with less visible wear.
