DESIGN STRATEGIES ENVIRONMENTAL

IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY

GREEN ROOF

Many synthetic materials emit harmful gases and chemicals into the air and result “Sick Building Syndrome.” Plants not only remove carbon dioxide from the air and add oxygen (O2). Some even filter harmful fumes out of the air.

The great insulation offered by green roofs can reduce the amount of energy needed to moderate the temperature of a building, so it can greatly reduce energy consumption.

O2 CO2

CO2 CH2O C6H6

STACK VENTILATION The atrium where the tree located act as a “thermal chimney” to promotes natural ventilation. The hot air rises to the operable louvers glass block at the roof and then exhaust extra heat. Cool exterior air is introduced from windows in 1/F and 2/F and so as to maintain good ventilation.

MIXIMIZING NATURAL LIGHTING As the sun is located at the back of the building, a raised glass block is designed to capture most of the sun light. Also, shading patterns are designed to prevent over shining.

PROMOTING ART AND ARCHITERCTURE

The exhibition center act as the main functional zone of this project. It aims to to enhances the art developmenat of Hong Kong , creating interaction between the local architecture and the general public and provide more opportunities to local artists to gain more exposure to the public.

RESPECTING HISTORY AND PRACTICE THE FUSION BETWEEN NEW AND OLD This conservation project preserve most of the original facades and structural elements such as columns and beams in order to retain its historical values. Some new elements like curtain walls are added into the design.

NEW ELEMENTS

PROVIDING MORE PUBLIC SPACE In Hong Kong, most of the urban district is lack of greenery public space for the general eneral public to take a rest. In resolution, the open space such as roof top and the south sunken area are designed to a garden in order to provide more greenary space.

The form of the building starts from a regular square divided into 4 parts. Core is located at the back of the Hennessy Road. The other 3 block are the office functional spaces. Since they are in different orientations, so their facade design are designed individually. Horizontal shading louvers are introduced in the South faรงade and vertical louvers are treated in the East faรงade. As for the SouthEast corner, it is face to the Southern playground, which is the most attractive view. In order not to disturb the view, louver are not articulated but instead tinted glass with different color are used and designed with an interlocking pattern. This can not only prevent heat gain and lower the lighting effect from the sun, but also enhance the atmosphere and creates a dramatic effect. The clear plane would increase the view from the interior. By rearranging the blocks, a significant block appeared facing the junction of the street, giving first impression of the building to citizens. The employees can also have an uplifted mood towards the junction where the stadium stands.

VIEW

SUNLIGHT PERFORMANCE

CORNER OFFICE

The view of a park is very rare among such densed city in HK. The design made good use of such site strengthness and create nice full height facade towards the park. Such design also connects the outter and inner side of the building.

Such design can increase the maximum conntact with sunlight within the densed city. This can improve the overall performance of the building and appoarch sustainablity.

Corner office provide best view and daylight effect. It can also be exempted from GFA in such a way. By maximizing the numbedr of corner offices, the layout provide higher flexiblity in terms of tenant customized layout of office.

The refuge floor provide a new gathering place for the workers more than just a empty floor. The design can also reduce the heat gain of the building. They can gather, chat or even rest there. It would be a great place to chill out from work
