SITE ANALYSIS PROJECT 1 -SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE
Solar Path The daylight path would be from the right to the left, with higher position in summer, lower in winter. Wind Direction The air movement is brought from the southeast side in summer, northwest side in winter.
(i) Location of site: York Road 1, Kowloon Tong (ii) Site area: around 600 m2 (iii) Characteristics of Kowloon Tong: Low density, green, low-rise houses surrounded
View The houses around are low-density and low-rise distributed. With plenty of greenery surrounded, the site gives quite a comfortable view and feeling. The eastern part comes to the Lion Rock Hill, giving a green view to the site.
Air pollution In the summer season, the vehicular contaminants will easily get into the site due to the wind direction and affect the air quality of the living area. Noise problem The vehicles crossing the traffic road will cause some noise problem to the site users. We may not able to hear our voice when talking near the road. The most busy time of traffic in a week: Mon-Fri 8:00-9:00 am 3:00-8:00 pm

SITE ANALYSIS
PROJECT 1 -SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE
Circulation pattern
The main entrance for the private cars as well as the site users would be on the side facing the York Road, which is the one-way road with less traffic. (Waterloo Road is a two-way road with heavy traffic) The arrows show the shortest distance from the site to several places: - The school - The playground - The MTR/bus station (Assumptions made: a. the kids are studying in the York English and Chinese Kindergarten b.the kids would go to the playground after school.)
The one way-road out from site
>For school/ entertainment: down-side >For work/ outside: up-side
The main gate of the house
The car route along the Waterloo Road
Neighbourhood activities The site is mainly surrounded by residential and educational buildings, and the transportation is convenient. This shows benefits to the client’s family especially the school kids. Moreover, the occupants are mostly having high income.

SITE ANALYSIS
PROJECT 1 -SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE
Vegetation Five tree along the traffic road can be the insulator between site and the road. They reduce the noise level produced by the vehicles across the Waterloo road and absorb the pollutant of the air. Also, provide the shading for the site area. Lower Taller Massing in the vicinity The surrounding buildings are mostly low-rised, but the few storage high building-(ABC Kindergarten) behind the site is much higher than the site, which would block the view and lower the privacy level of the site.

SITE ANALYSIS
PROJECT 2 -KINDERGARTEN Land use ( Scale 1 : 2500 )
Park and playgrounds:
There is a large park right near the site. The environment is comfortable and there are many plants. It provides a place for people to rest and take a walk. The air quality is relatively better than the north and west side as the park is very green. Also, there is big basketball court near the park. Student and teenagers can use this facility. Across the road, There is also a large playground and entertainment centre opposite the site.
Schools: Residential buildings:
Most of the residential buildings are public housings located at the southern part of the site , which are in old style. The householders are mostly in grass- root class. Also, there is a private housing located in front of the site, with the householders mostly in middle class. ďż˝ It takes a 5-min walk from the site to Tung Tau Estate of Ma Tung House.
Shopping mall:
There is a mall across the road on the right hand side of the site. It provides restaurants, shops, supermarket, etc., which turned out very convenient to the parents of the kids and maybe beneficial when activities such as parties are held.It takes an 1-min walk to go there from site.
Vegetation:
There are many trees surrounding the site, therefore much shading can be provided. They can block the direct sunlight which is too strong sometime and absorb the traffic contaminant to make the air quality much better. Also, it can provide a relaxing atmosphere for the site. a
There are both primary schools and secondary schools near the site, including international school. Most of them are located at the eastern side and western side of the site. It is convenient for the student to use the sport facility near the site.ďż˝ E.g. It takes an 1-min walk can walk from the site to Po Yan Oblate Primary School.

PROJECT 2 -KINDERGARTEN
Wind Direction ( 1 : 500)
1. In summer, two high-rise building reduce the strength of the wind.
2. Solution: Better ventilation can avoid accumulation of contaminant. 3. Air pollution: In winter, air contaminant follow s the wind and reach the site directly.
Constraint
Description
(i) Noise pollution
The site is close to the crossroads of Tung Tsing Road and Lok Sin Road, so it is very noisy. Especially for the pitch hours, the traffic surrounding the site is quite high when children are going and leaving the kindergarten. Also, the Po Yan Oblate Primary School is opposite to our site and the playgrounds near the site both will get noise from the users. For short term influence, the maintainence progress of the Tung Tau (I) Estate is near the site.
(II) Air pollution
The toilet and the location of recyclable collection point (RCP) are close to our site, which is bad-smell and dirty. The Air quality of Health Index (AQHI) of areas next to Kowloon city, such as Mongkok and Sham Shui Po are quite high too. Moreover, the site is located next to the street and decorate buildings, which cause harms to their respiratory systems. However, the trees near the site block some of the pollutants.
In both seasons, a great amount of direct sunlight can be projected on the site Pros: Better utilization of sunlight on the site Cons: Shading surround the site have to be considered
9
SITE ANALYSIS
PROJECT 2 -KINDERGARTEN Transport:
The main public transportation of the site would be minibus and bus as no direct accesses of the site provided. It would be too dangerous for private cars to go in the site directly due to its location. People would have to take buses either at Tung Dou Village or the Prince Edward Road East, which takes about 3 minutes to walk there. Minibus stops are located near the Kowloon City Pizza and Tung Dou Village as well. E.g the 25M goes to Kowloon Tong station takes people 5 minutes to walk there from site. However, MTR stations are relatively far away (e.g. Lok Fu station, the nearest one is 977.4m away from the site, which takes about a 1.5 hours walk), so it mainly takes mini-buses to transfer people to the MTR stations.
Traffic:
As the site is located in the junction of the road, so there will be air and noise pollution. The roads are busy with two-way traffic flow, the traffic load around the site is medium and the speed is fast. Therefore, trees may be planted near the roads to block the noise, sound barriers could be considered as well.
Pedestrian:
Summary about site content Positive aspects of site
There are some pedestrian roads around the park site, but not many people pass the road near the site compared to the road at Kowloon City Plaza. People can walk to the site from the nearby housing estates and shopping mall by crossing traffic lights. Furthermore, there would be many students pass the site to Kowloon City after school.
A lot of vegetation surround the site >absorb traffic contaminant >block the noise >have good air quality and relaxing atmosphere Great view surround the site Very close to the residential area >convenient for the childrens and parents nearby Great direct sunlight project on the site in both season Very good ventilation in winter season >wind comes from the North West direction
Limitations of site
Two traffic roads along the site boundary >dangerous for the childrens >affect the air quality of the site in summer season because of the wind direction >significant noise pollution Fences are needed to prevent strangers from accessing the site MTR station far away from the site Shading need to be provided due to the strong sunlight sometimes Two high-rise buildings block the wind flow in summer season >inferior ventilation and poor air quality because of the accumulation of traffic contaminant

Deconstructivism It is a development of postmodern architecture that began in the late 1980s. It is influenced by the theory of "Deconstruction", which is a form of semiotic analysis. It is characterized by fragmentation, an interest in manipulating a structure's surface or skin, non-rectilinear shapes which appear to distort and dislocate elements of architecture, such as structure and envelope. The finished visual appearance of buildings that exhibit deconstructivist "styles" is characterized by unpredictability and controlled chaos.

Gehry Residence
Sirmai-Peterson Residence
The Gehry Residence is Frank Gehry's own house. It was originally an extension, designed by Gehry built and around an existing house. It makes use of unconventional materials such as chain link fences and corrugated steel.
Situated on a 2-acre rural site adjacent to a ravine and a storm drain, this 3,000-square foot residence developed as a church-like form, with the typical residential program elements clustered around the perimeter of a central cruciform structure containing the core of the house.

Design Strategy
Unfinished apperance Gehry’s style at times seems unfinished or even crude, but his work is consistent with the California "funk" art movement in the 1960s and early 1970s, which featured the use of inexpensive found objects and non-traditional media such as clay to make serious art. Gehry has been called "the apostle of chain-link fencing and corrugated metal siding".

Olympic Fish
Privacy Privacy is the major consideration of Gehry’s design. So both his house and Sirmai-Peterson Residence have placed high emphasis on privacy. The main entrance is connected to the porch, and it is the main route to different funtional zone. When vistors visit their house, they cannot have the full view of their room such as bedroom. So privacy can be well protected.
Utilization of daylight and ventilation There is a extensive use of displacement ventilation utilizing a raised floor system. Also, operable windows for natural ventilation and individual control, and which provide an abundant use of daylight in all interior spaces. Most of the opening and window are facing the east, so the owner can enjoy the hill view.
