Le Verbier Festival est un évènement international de musique classique qui a lieu chaque été dans la station de montagne de Verbier, en Suisse. La mission du Festival est de construire une communauté d’échange entre les grands maîtres et les jeunes artistes du monde entier, et d’être leader dans son domaine en proposant des programmes d’éducation musicale significatifs. The Verbier Festival is an international classical music event that takes place each summer in the mountain town of Verbier, Switzerland. The Festival’s mission is to build a community of exchange between great masters and young artists from all over the world and to be a leader in its field by providing meaningful music education programmes.

Depuis la création du Verbier Festival, mon objectif a été de lui faire atteindre les plus hauts niveaux d’excellence et d’attractivité. J’ai vu cette 25e édition, et plus particulièrement le concert de gala du 25 juillet, comme un aboutissement de ce point de vue, mais aussi comme une étape fondatrice pour aller vers de nouveaux défis. Tout cela ne pourrait se faire sans le soutien de la Commune de Bagnes et du Canton du Valais. Le Festival est désormais fortement ancré dans la région, où il est un vecteur important du développement économique, et fait rayonner le nom de Verbier dans le monde. Since the beginning of the Verbier Festival, my objective has been to achieve the highest levels of excellence and appeal. I saw our 25th edition, and more particularly the gala concert of 25 July, as an accomplishment in this respect and as a milestone on the road to new challenges. None of this could have happened without the support of the Commune de Bagnes and the Canton du Valais. The Festival is now firmly rooted in the region, where it plays an important role in its economic development and in promoting the Verbier name around the world.
Tout au long de ma première année de présidence, ma priorité a été de consolider les structures opérationnelles et économiques du Festival, de resserrer les liens avec tous nos partenaires et de veiller au renouvellement des publics en capitalisant la programmation artistique et pédagogique exceptionnelle là où le Verbier Festival est un modèle de premier ordre au niveau mondial. During this first year as Chairman, my priority was to strengthen the Festival’s operational and economic structures, bolster ties with our partners and ensure the renewal of audiences by capitalizing on the exceptional artistic and educational programming for which the Verbier Festival is known on the world stage.

Le cap des 25 ans marque une étape importante pour toute organisation. Nous sommes au moment crucial où nous passons de l’enfance à l’adolescence, de la candeur à l’affirmation de soi, des projets d’avenir plein la tête. C’est cet élan qui doit nous inspirer et nous motiver. Au terme de cette première année en tant que Directrice des opérations, le bilan est très positif. Nous allons poursuivre notre recherche d’excellence, tout en travaillant à consolider l’institutionnalisation de la manifestation, afin de construire et consolider notre futur. Tout cela doit se faire en conservant l’esprit de famille qui fait partie de notre identité et qui rend le Festival absolument unique. Twenty-five years is a milestone for any organization. It is the age at which one moves from childhood to adolescence, from naivety to self-awareness, a future in full view. It is this momentum that both inspires and motivates. I am pleased with our results after completing my first year as Chief Operating Officer. Moving forward, the Festival will continue its quest for excellence, while working to institutionalize its operations in order to build and solidify its future. All this must be done while preserving the family spirit that is part of our identity and that makes the Verbier Festival absolutely unique.
Le renouveau, la curiosité et la découverte ont été les maîtres mots des trois programmes de formation des artistes du Verbier Festival : Academy, Orchestra et Junior Orchestra. C’est aussi dans ce sens que le Festival a développé ses efforts pour mobiliser les communautés locales et de nouveaux publics. L’Academy a fêté son 25e anniversaire avec une participation record aux master class et concerts quotidiens, tandis que VF Unlimited — une nouvelle approche des programmes Fest’Off et Discovery — a contribué à attirer un public plus large et plus varié. Dans l’ensemble, un bon début pour les 25 prochaines années du Festival. Renewal, curiosity and discovery were central to the activities of the Verbier Festival Artist Training Programmes this year— Academy, Orchestra and Junior Orchestra—as well as to the Festival’s work in engaging local communities and new audiences. The Academy celebrated its 25th birthday with record-breaking attendance at daily masterclasses and concerts, while VF Unlimited—a re-imagining of the Fest’Off and Discovery programmes—engaged a wider and more diverse public than ever before. All in all, a good start to the Festival’s next 25 years.

Surprises et partage Unexpected Visitors Après l’annulation du chef d’orchestre Iván Fisher, le grand maître Simon Rattle, le charismatique Directeur musical du VFCO, Gábor Takács-Nagy, et le jeune chef issu de l’Academy, François López-Ferrer, ont pris possession de la scène pour une soirée qui restera dans les mémoires. The great conductor Sir Simon Rattle paid an unexpected visit to the stage of Salle des Combins when Iván Fisher cancelled his appearance. Charismatic Gábor Takács-Nagy and Academy conductor François López-Ferrer also took the stage for this evening of surprises.

Prokofiev Weekend Un weekend en apothéose consacré aux œuvres du compositeur russe, mené par les pianistes Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Daniil Trifonov et Yuja Wang et les musiciens du VFO sous la direction de Gianandrea Noseda. An electrifying final Festival weekend was devoted to the works of Sergei Prokofiev. The VFO and conductor Gianandrea Noseda were joined by exceptional pianists Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Daniil Trifonov and Yuja Wang.

Le VFCO est l’orchestre de chambre en résidence du Festival. Il est constitué d’artistes formés au sein des programmes de formation du Festival, qui tiennent désormais des positions dans les plus grands orchestres. Le VFCO a donné huit concerts pendant le Festival 2018, dont le gala du 25e anniversaire et l’incontournable concert annuel en plein air à La Chaux. En novembre, l’orchestre a lancé le 25e anniversaire du Festival avec sa résidence annuelle au Schloss Elmau (Allemagne). Il a poursuivi les célébrations au printemps à travers une tournée d’un mois en Chine, un arrêt au nouvel Opéra de Dubaï et des représentations à bord du MS Europa d’Hapag-Lloyd.
The VFCO is the resident chamber orchestra of the Verbier Festival. It is made up of alumni of the Festival’s Artist Training Programmes who now hold positions with leading orchestras. The VFCO performed eight concerts during the 2018 Festival, including the 25th Anniversary Gala and the popular open-air concert at La Chaux. The Orchestra launched the Festival’s anniversary year with its annual residency at Schloss Elmau (Germany) in November and continued the celebrations in the spring with a month-long tour of China, a stop at Dubai’s new opera house and performances aboard Hapag-Lloyd’s MS Europa.

SUCCESS STORIES Les programmes de formation des artistes du Verbier Festival ont été un tremplin important dans la carrière de certains des musiciens les plus réputés actuellement. Verbier Festival Artist Training Programmes have been an important stepping stone in the careers of some of today’s most sought-after musicians. JUNIOR ORCHESTRA Le VFJO est un programme international de formation orchestrale pour musiciens âgés de 15 à 18 ans. Ses membres sont entraînés par un panel de musiciens réputés, originaires du monde entier. Plusieurs sont d’anciens membres du VFO qui se produisent maintenant dans des formations de premier plan. En 2018, les musiciens du VFJO ont répété et ont donné deux concerts symphoniques avec le chef Alain Altinoglu, ainsi que Rigoletto de Verdi, dirigé par Stanislav Kochanovsky. The VFJO is an international orchestral training programme for musicians aged 15 to 18. Members are coached by a roster of established players from around the globe, many of whom are VFO alumni and who now perform in prominent orchestras. In 2018, VFJO musicians trained with and performed two symphonic concerts led by conductor Alain Altinoglu and Verdi’s Rigoletto, led by Stanislav Kochanovsky.

Le 25e anniversaire du Festival a marqué le début d’un nouveau chapitre pour le Verbier Festival Orchestra avec l’arrivée de Valery Gergiev en tant que nouveau Directeur musical. Le maestro a dirigé le VFO à deux reprises pendant le Festival. Son arrivée a également été à l’origine d’un nouveau programme de mentorat en direction d’orchestre de l’Academy. The Festival’s 25th birthday also marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Verbier Festival Orchestra with the announcement of Valery Gergiev as Music Director. Maestro Gergiev led the VFO twice during the Festival. His arrival was also the impetus for a new Academy Conducting Mentorship programme.

Le VFO est reconnu comme l’un des meilleurs orchestres de formation au monde. La tradition d’excellence artistique de l’orchestre s’est poursuivie en 2018 avec la formation et les concerts dirigés par le Directeur musical Valery Gergiev, ainsi que Christoph Eschenbach, Stanislav Kochanovsky, Gianandra Noseda, Mikhaïl Pletnev, Simon Rattle et Gábor Takács-Nagy. Les musiciens ont également été formés par des membres du MET Orchestra de New York. The VFO is recognised as one of the world’s best training orchestras. The orchestra’s tradition of artistic excellence continued in 2018 with training and concerts led by Music Director Valery Gergiev, Christoph Eschenbach, Stanislav Kochanovsky, Gianandra Noseda, Mikhaïl Pletnev, Simon Rattle and Gábor Takács-Nagy. Musicians were also coached by members of New York’s MET Orchestra.

Pour sa 25e année, la VFA a de nouveau offert des possibilités d’apprentissage exceptionnelles ainsi qu’une plate-forme de contacts inégalée pour les pianistes, violonistes, altistes, violoncellistes, ensembles de musique de chambre et chanteurs les plus talentueux du monde. Avec l’arrivée de Valery Gergiev comme Directeur musical du VFO, une nouvelle formation en direction d’orchestre a également vu le jour. Suite au succès rencontré par le nouveau format du programme vocal débuté en 2017, l’Atelier Lyrique a été lancé en 2018, intégrant l’étude de l’opéra et de mélodie, menant les chanteurs à tenir des rôles secondaires dans l’opéra principal du Festival, en plus d’un opéra final donné avec le Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra et un concert de mélodies et lieder. For its 25th year, the VFA again offered unequalled learning and networking opportunities to the world’s most talented pianists, violinists, violists, cellists, chamber ensembles and singers. With the arrival of Valery Gergiev as Music Director of the VFO, a new conducting mentorship was also introduced. After a successful re-formulation of its voice programme in 2017, a formal Atelier Lyrique was launched in 2018, integrating the study of both opera and song. Singers performed secondary roles in the Festival’s mainstage opera in addition to a final semi-staged opera with the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra as well as a song recital.

En 2018, le Festival a développé son engagement pour l’éducation et l’implication artistique et culturelle. Les événements du « Citizen Artist Project » ont conduit les musiciens des Verbier Festival Academy & Orchestras dans les écoles, églises, et établissements médicaux en Valais et en Suisse romande. Durant le Festival, VF Unlimited – une reformulation des programmes « Discovery » et « Fest’off » – a suscité l’intérêt d’un public de tous âges en éveillant la curiosité pour les arts et la culture avec plus de 100 événements gratuits et accessibles. En plus de cela, une centaine master class, concerts et répétitions de l’Academy et des orchestres étaient également gratuits et ouverts au public. In 2018, the Festival intensified its commitment to artistic and cultural engagement and education. Through the ‘Citizen Artist Project’, musicians of the Verbier Festival Academy & Orchestras performed in schools, churches, hospitals and seniors’ homes in Valais and Swiss Romandie. CITIZEN ARTIST PROJECT Pendant et après leur séjour à Verbier, les musiciens de l’Academy et des orchestres sont encouragés à réfléchir sur leurs rôles et responsabilités en tant qu’artistes d’aujourd’hui. Ils s’impliquent auprès des communautés en présentant la musique classique de façon pertinente, dans une démarche d’ouverture et de partage. Both during and after their time at Verbier, musicians of the Academy and Orchestras are encouraged to reflect on their roles and responsibilities as modern-day artists by presenting classical music in ways that engage audiences and have social impact.

Âges : 3–9 Le Festival s’est également associé à Espace 2 pour diffuser en direct des concerts dans les hôpitaux de Sion, Martigny, Sierre, Malévoz, Saint-Amé et Montana. The Festival also partnered with Espace 2 to broadcast concerts live in hospitals in Sion, Martigny, Sierre, Malévoz, Saint-Amé and Montana.
ÉGLISES CHURCHES 7 concerts : Églises à Orsières, Saint-Maurice, La Tzoumaz, Verbier
Le Festival s’est associé à la Fondation Vareille afin d’offrir un nouveau programme dans les écoles valaisannes en 2018. Accompagnés par un dessinateur invité, les enfants ont créé des illustrations basés sur les contes de Ma mère l’Oye, après avoir étudié les histoires avec leurs professeurs. Des musiciens et un conteur invité ont animé leurs dessins sur la musique de Ravel. Ce projet pilote sera étendu à d’autres écoles en 2019. The Festival joined forces with the Vareille Foundation to offer a new programme in three Valaisan schools in 2018. Led by a guest illustrator, children created drawings based on Mother Goose fairy tales after studying the stories with their teachers. Musicians and a guest narrator brought their drawings to life in performance of Ravel’s work based on these stories. The pilot project will be expanded to more schools in 2019.
700 fréquentation audience Un violon dans mon école A Violin Can Change the World Dans le cadre de son soutien au programme Un violon dans mon école de la Fondation Vareille, le Festival a accueilli 100 élèves de Martigny et de Monthey, avec leurs parents, pour une journée de programmation spécialement conçue pour leur plaisir. As part of its support of the Vareille Foundation’s A Violin can Change the World programme, the Festival welcomed 100 students and their parents from Martigny and Montey for a fun-filled day of specially devised programming. 26

Au fil de ses quatre thématiques qui couvrent toute une journée de Festival, Unlimited s’est adressé aussi bien aux petits festivaliers qu’aux noctambules, néophytes ou mélomanes. VF Unlimited offered a myriad of free and accessible activities for all ages. With a menu of four themes presented each Festival day from morning to night, Unlimited stimulated the curiosity of children and family audiences, musically curious night owls and classical music novices and aficionados alike.

Playground regroupe nos ateliers enfants, randonnées, concerts en plein-air, spectacles familiaux, répétitions ouvertes au public et même des parties d’échecs. Fondée en 1993 par un cercle de passionnés, séduits par le projet artistique de Martin T:son Engstroem, l’association « Les Amis du Verbier Festival » a contribué de façon déterminante à la naissance, puis à l’évolution du Verbier Festival et de ses projets éducatifs. Les Amis participent activement au développement et à la pérennité de la manifestation. Founded in 1993 by a group of enthusiasts who were passionate about Martin T:son Engstroem’s artistic vision, The Friends of the Verbier Festival Association made an important founding contribution to the Verbier Festival and its learning programmes. The Friends are actively involved in the growth and sustainability of the event.
