ACADEMY 2019 VFJO VFO Conducting Soloists & Chamber Music Atelier Lyrique Alumni
MENTORSHIP INSPIRATION FRIENDSHIP MENTORAT CRÉATIVITÉ AMITIÉS the VERBIER GENERATION The Academy is the Verbier Festival’s respiratory system, the laboratory where future talents are discovered and nurtured. It sets the gold standard for training of emerging soloists, chamber and orchestral musicians, singers and conductors. Nowhere else on the planet is there such a concentration of talent deserving of support each summer. The Academy has been a career launchpad for many of today’s most sought-after musicians and the Festival’s resident professional orchestra— the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra—is made up of Academy alumni who now hold positions with the world’s leading orchestras.
the VERBIER GENERATION NEEDS YOU Scholarships Bourses This year, the average cost to train each of our 222 Verbier Festival Academy musicians is CHF 20,000: roughly CHF 10,000 per Junior Orchestra musician, conductor, soloist, chamber musician and singer, and approximately 30,000 for each Verbier Festival Orchestra musician. Donations of scholarships ranging from 3,500 to 5,000, help offset these expenses. Training costs differ between the Academy’s programme, but generally include faculty, conductor and coaching fees and expenses, rental of training facilities and equipment, as well as some housing and travel costs. Indeed 40% of the Verbier Festival’s budgeted is committed to Academy programmes. Please help us ensure that this exceptional artist training experience remains offered ‘tuition-free’ to the talented young artists who join us in Verbier each summer. Pledge a scholarship for 2020 now by joining The Friends of the Verbier Festival! The successes of Verbier Festival Academy alumni are a testament to the commitment the Verbier Festival makes to the world’s most promising young artists. Forty per cent of the Festival’s budget is dedicated to artist training delivered through the Academy’s Soloist & Chamber Music Programme, Atelier Lyrique, Orchestra and Junior Orchestra, and, since 2018, its Conducting Programme. All of these programmes now make up the ‘Verbier Festival Academy’ in the interest of more effectively communicating our commitment to young artists. I look forward to seeing and speaking with many of you at the more than 200 masterclasses, workshops, rehearsals and performances featuring our talented young guests this summer. And be sure to visit the Festival’s Spiegeltent—the newest venue for Academy and Unlimited activities adjacent to Salle des Combins! SPIEGELTENT This year, the Verbier Festival introduces a new home for its Academy and Unlimited programmes, located adjacent to Salle des Combins. Spiegeltents, or magic mirrors, were travelling pavilions hand-crafted in Belgium that toured Europe at the start of the 20th century. They were a popular fairground attraction to which thousands flocked to dance on their beautiful oak floors and be entertained while nestled in their elegant seating booths. They were the ultimate cabaret and music salon. In preparation for work with their formidable maestro and other distinguished conductors, VFO musicians receive two weeks of intensive coaching from musicians of New York’s Metropolitan Opera. This year marks 20 years of collaboration with the MET Orchestra.

VALERY GERGIEV
Music Director Directeur musical Verbier Festival Orchestra Arguably the most distinguished conductor in the world, Valery Gergiev is a champion of discovering and nurturing new musical talent. He is a vivid representative of the St Petersburg conducting school and a former pupil of the legendary Professor Ilya Musin. In 1988 Maestro Gergiev was appointed Music Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, and in 1996 became its Artistic and General Director. Under his direction, the Mariinsky Theatre has become a major theatre and concert complex, without par anywhere in the world. Despite a schedule that would daunt even the busiest politician, Maestro Gergiev has been a regular visitor to the Verbier Festival and, last year, was appointed Music Director of the Verbier Festival Orchestra.

Recent Achievement I was named Artistic Partner of Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the Orchestre Métropolitain (Montreal).
Recent Achievement I won the position of Assistant Conductor for three orchestras in France (Orchestre National de Lille, Orchestre de Picardie, Orchestra National d’île de France in Paris). On the personal front, I’ve recently restarted my tennis training!
I am currently working in Montreal as artistic partner of Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the Orchestre Métropolitain. Six year ago, I founded my own orchestra—the Orchestre de l’Agora—through which I can express all of my musical interests. The Verbier Festival Academy is a very inspiring experience, especially being surrounded by extraordinary musicians, teachers and working alongside Valery Gergiev, whom I admire greatly. It is an experience I am sure I will remember my whole life.
I love to create—create musical projects, create team spirit, and, most importantly for musicians and audiences, create emotion. Music is part of me; when I conduct, I not only express my artistic vision, but my humanity too. As a conductor, I can combine my love of music with my love of working with others. I am committed to democratizing music by reaching as many people as possible. I find it very important to present new ways to approach music—to encourage exchange between artist and audience. One way in particular is to give life to music of our time, about which I am passionate.

BANK JULIUS BAER A Commitment to Future Generations through the Development of Young Talent Engagée auprès des jeunes, mobilisée pour la culture
Supporting art and music has been integral to Bank Julius Baer’s philosophy for decades. An interest in visual art dates back to the early 1930’s when the Baer family began its private art collection. Added to this, two female members of the Baer family pursued artistic careers, one of them having studied classical music. As a result, the family maintained an intensive contact with the art scene in Zurich, Paris and New York. In the early 1980’s, Bank Julius Baer founded its corporate art collection. The purpose was, and still is, to support artists who, at the time of a first purchase, are not yet firmly established, but clearly show great potential. Nearly two decades later, the Bank started to sponsor music halls, festivals and museums based on its heritage. Its collaboration with the Verbier Festival dates back to 2010 and focuses primarily on the Festival’s artist training mandate. The commitment goes beyond financial support; the bank sponsors the daily lunches for the Academy’s Soloist & Chamber Music Programme and Atelier Lyrique, leads a ‘basics of financial management’ seminar for all Academy musicians and—for the first time this year, through a documentary miniseries—follows a young French conductor, Lucie Leguay, on her transformative journey as part of the Academy. This experience is featured on Julius Baer’s and the Verbier Festival’s social media channels.

Recent Achievement I ‘play-conducted’ for the first time ever, conducting two Mozart piano concertos from the piano.
Recent Achievements This spring I was named the Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I am also now able to do an arabesque in iceskating!
I studied piano and composition at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and completed my conducting studies in Berlin. I have always been drawn toward German Romantic music, and I have a particular fascination for the works of Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. My international career took off in 2016, after winning Second Prize in the Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in Bamberg. Next season, I will make my debut at the Prague National Theatre to conduct Lolita, a contemporary opera written by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin.
I love the social aspect that belongs to conducting. I find it extremely interesting to collaborate with different people, personalities, young and old generations, experienced and less-experienced musicians, students… Music is something we all understand, a language that needs no translation. Each of us takes music very personally. That is why I believe music is the shortest way to make people understand each other and can give us confidence in the fact that we are not alone.

SOLOISTS & CHAMBER MUSIC “I needed to gain the reputation and recognition of being an internationally acclaimed violinist in order make the impact I want on a 21st century public. The Verbier Festival Academy helped me gain this essential credibility and powerful voice.” TIMOTHY CHOOI, Canada violin Soloist & Chamber Music Programme, 2017 & 2018 Laureate, Prix Yves Paternot, 2018 The Academy searches the world for the most promising pianists, violinists, violists, cellists and chamber ensembles to become Fellows of its Soloist & Chamber Music Programme, Eight from each solo discipline and two ensembles are selected for three weeks of mentorship and coaching by a faculty that is second to none. A select number of promising young students-in-residence, aged 13 to 15, are also invited to soak up the Festival experience with the aim of inspiring them to apply for full Academy Fellowships in the future. The study and performance of chamber music is fundamental at Verbier. In addition to classes and coachings offered to two string quartets this, all soloists, including students-in-residence, are assigned to chamber music groups and take part in chamber music masterclasses in additional to those in their respective disciplines.

I am really looking forward to the Verbier Festival Academy, as it will be a wonderful opportunity to discover and exchange with other artists, to deepen my musical knowledge, to learn new pieces of music and, most of all, to work with other musicians on the chamber music repertoire, which I particularly love. I am very keen on learning new compositions and finding new opportunities to perform them. I enjoy playing chess, reading and studying physics, but none of those compare to my fascination for music!
I first learned the piano when I was three years old. Since that time, music has become a part of my life—at home, at school, everywhere on the road… It provides me with a limitless source of inspiration, of motivation. It allows me to aim high, it gives me strength through hard work, it lifts my spirits up and, at the same time, helps me to relax. I do not know what the future holds for me, however, it is my greatest wish that my career continues to develop further on stage.

I try to respect a composer’s intentions and contribute with my own individuality, thoughts, ideas and interpretations. Music is a powerful tool—it reaches many different places, it lifts me up, it can heal people, bring them relief. I hope to make performances a shared experience with the audience. Music has given me the wonderful opportunities to learn from artists, teachers and make new friendships. I am an avid chamber musician, and I look forward to playing this enchanted repertoire with the other students of the Verbier Festival Academy!
I am devoted to music in all of its various forms: solo, concerto, chamber music, vocal and contemporary repertoire. There is not an area of music by which I am not intrigued or fascinated. I am very lucky to have started living the life of a professional pianist, which gives me the chance to travel, to constantly learn new repertoire, and to meet wonderful and talented musicians. And by playing music, I hope I can contribute to enriching the lives of those around me.

My parents have always loved classical music, though they were not professional musicians. My mother used to play a little bit of piano. I think it was the radiance on her face and her deep love for music when she played that gave such joy to my brother and me. It made me want to pursue a career in music. I consider a performance a success if, even for a few moments, I can truly be connected with the audience through the magic of music. I believe musicians are the luckiest people on earth, as they have the privilege to create and share joy with others.
I want to try to enrich people’s souls and to make the audience feel different emotions during my performances. Music is the only world where I can openly communicate to a lot of people without fear. I think you can feel and hear words in music which you might never dare to say in your daily life. Besides music, I enjoy jogging and table tennis. I also support several charities and am proud to regularly perform for charity events in Russia.

Music is intrinsically part of who I am. It is the first thing I think about when I wake up. It is a lifelong obsession and the thing I love the most in the world. I am very happy to be part of the Verbier Festival Academy this summer. This is going to be a time of great learning and exchange with talented personalities.
Almost nothing else in the world makes me feel happier than exploring repertoire—reading what great composers from centuries ago had whispered through their scores. I absolutely love learning about the historical, social and biographical context of a composition. As someone who loves reading and history, I find it fascinating to try to imagine how different those periods of time were, compared my own. Having this connection with composers gives me tremendous inspiration.

Whenever I hear music, I am at home. I feel truly blessed to be able to play an instrument, allowing me to express myself and relate the composer’s message to the audience. I love to cheer people up through music. After many outreach events at hospitals, schools, libraries, community and senior centres, I believe the smile in the faces of an audience truly illustrates the wonderful transformative power of music. This is the best gift I could ever hope for as an artist.

Music is difficult to put into words. But I am grateful that I am able to feel so many different emotions when I listen to music—I really feel like I’m transported to another world. The best thing that can happen after a performance is to feel that the audience relates to the feelings and emotions I try to convey. When that happens, it is the best experience a musician can hope for.
I started playing the violin at age two. I was very lucky grow up in a creative environment: my mother is a pianist and my father, a visual artist. I think music is a language that does not separate us or judge us; it is something that helps us communicate. We can be from completely different countries, not speak the same language, have maybe never even met, and nevertheless, music still seems to bring a form of connection between us all.

Performing music gives me the chance to communicate with the audience, making music the most powerful means of communication. Wherever I go, I know I can be understood because I speak the language of music. And this could not make me happier. I really look forward to being at the Verbier Festival Academy, to learn new piece of music and make enriching encounters.
I have been playing the violin for most of my life. Music is just an endless source of joy for me and I really would not be where I am today without it. I have had the chance to study with world-class teachers and musicians, who have always offered valuable guidance and wisdom. My most meaningful friendships and cherished relationships have come as a result of music, of collaborating with my fellow musicians and colleagues. I hope to be able to build on my musicianship this year in Verbier Festival Academy. The Academy’s fantastic faculty, the environment, and my fellow musicians are sure to be incredibly inspiring and I hope to bring a little bit of inspiration to the Festival as well!

I cannot remember a time when I did not listen to music. I was four years old when I first listened to an opera. I instantly fell in love with Verdi’s Rigoletto and have been to many Opera houses in Europe since. My favourite operas are the ones written by Verdi, Puccini and Wagner. My love for opera then took me to the chamber music and symphonic repertoire. I discovered Schubert’s, Schumann’s and Brahms’s chamber music and all the concertos for violin and orchestra. Tchaikovsky makes me cry, especially the Fourth Symphony. I do not know who I am as an artist, I only know that I cannot live without discovering and playing music. I am very happy to be part of this musical world.
I have been raised in a musical atmosphere. I remember going to concerts from the age of six, and by the time I was ten music was with me all the time. While time changed, people went in and out of my life, things occurred, the only constant that remained clear and solid was music. My feelings toward this art form has never wavered. I am very excited to be taking part in the Verbier Festival Academy, as it offers great opportunities to come together, to share art and musical experiences with other people my age.

Recent Achievement My one violin student came back for a second lesson!
I remember the first time I really listened to classical music. It was the Humoresque by Dvořák, with visuals of a love story between teddy bears. I think it was the first time I so clearly felt emotions that I could not entirely describe with words. Being daring and spontaneous are two of the most crucial of making music as an artist. Great composers were brave enough to break boundaries and I think that is why they developed such unique musical languages.
I find my life most happily immersed in music! When I was a child, I would travel every month from Indiana to California for lessons. Now, as a conservatory student, I spend most of my time either practicing, in lessons or in orchestra rehearsals. My favorite relaxation activity is to get people together to read some chamber music scores for hours.

Music might be a place where philosophy and humanity interact together, a place where my mind, my soul and my heart can feel most at ease. I have learned that music is more than just playing an instrument. It serves as a perception of the world around me. I hope to spread a bigger message, to help heal other’s wounds through my playing. I wish to say something that can change people’s live. Without that, I believe music loses its meaning.

To be an artist in the 21st century means that you have to always be daring, be flexible, and not be afraid to try something new. When I am performing, I want people to see who I am as a person, not only the audience, but my fellow musicians too. Music has always been a part of my life; there was never a time when I had to decide if music would be my life—it was simply very natural. Chamber music is what I really love! As a violist you’re often supporting the foundations and being a great team player; it’s why I love what I do!
I believe that my role as a musician is to interpret the beauty of our human culture in the form of sound. To me, music should be spoken like a big story while staying true to the intentions of the composer. It needs to go beyond the rational and academic but also be mind and soultouching.

The Verbier Festival Academy has a unique and wonderful way of bringing together generations of artistic excellence. I will there be able to learn from a world-renowned faculty, from talented and gifted peers and colleagues and be in an environment where I can explore what it takes to be a successful musician. It is rare that one can be inspired by so many people at once. I have always thought of myself as a violist that belongs in a string quartet. Since I am out of school, one of the best things for me to do is keep going to music festivals and meeting other musicians. Verbier is the place to be.
I wish to be a musician in order to comfort people in our increasingly hostile world. Taking part in the Verbier Festival Academy has been big dream. Many of the musicians I respect have been to Verbier and have told me how much they learned in their summers at the Festival. I look forwards to listening to great musicians and learn from them.

Not only do I want to be the best artist possible, but I want to make sure that the gift of music is available to all people. Taking the initiative to create programming that activates and engages communities is critical for any artist. By developing professional connections at Verbier, by networking, by giving back, and through continued participation as an alum, I will be able to become more fully the citizen artist I long to be.
I had the opportunity to take part in an outreach program as a young violinist with my mother and my sister. For 12 years, we visited over 200 nursing homes around Sydney and offered music as voluntary community service for senior citizens. With the same group of people, we traveled almost every summer to different countries and visited prisons, hospitals, homeless shelters. Through these meaningful experiences, I realized how music is truly universal. You can connect with every human being through music J’aime la musique.

I started playing the violin at age four. When I was a high school student, I often played the viola in string quartets. I became gradually enchanted by the charms of the instrument and, after some encounters with major musicians, I decided to focus on playing it exclusively. I wish to become a violist who can highlight all the beauty of the viola. And I hope my music can someday be someone else’s source of inspiration and imagination.
I grew up in Los Angeles but I was born into an Austrian/German family. Having the influence of both Europe and America really shaped who I am as a musician and as a person. I believe the greatest musicians are the ones who leave parts of themselves on the stage when they play, when an audience number is struck with feeling like they saw a part of a person in their musical interpretation. That is what I strive to be as an artist. And what I appreciate most in the musical world.

Music has so many different aspects, faces, styles and colours. It never gets boring. Verbier is the right place for me to learn from fantastic and great musicians, to meet old and new friends, and to enjoy an unforgettable time working and playing a lot of different music on highest level. Being invited to the Verbier Festival Academy is a dream come true!
I always try to be true to composers—to convey to the best of my abilities their messages to the audience. Therefore, I always also try to be as true as I can to audiences in order to help them understand who I am in connection with the music—to bring them into this world of mine. This is who I want to be as an artist and what music means to me.

I have been playing the cello for 14 years and I really enjoy it. The way to become an artist is hard, endless and I think I still have a long way to go. I always try to speak through my instrument. I want to become a musician who does not only produce beautiful and amazing sound, but a musician who can actually speak and bring out the soul of the composers. I believe it is extremely important to play chamber music, to interact with people through music and to share it with those for whom it may not normally be accessible. Classical music is not only for an elite audience; it is for everyone and is a real a way to communicate with people. After all, music is a way to express what words cannot say. Everyone should experience it and benefit from it!
I have been playing the cello since I was five. I can go to concerts with great musicians and then get tremendously inspired, go right home and practice. Still, my favourite thing is to sit on stage to play in front of an audience. When I perform, I wish to tell a story through the music. I want to be able to influence people so that they are left with a feeling or a mood when I am finished playing. I hope to be able to show how beautiful this kind of language is.

Music plays a great part in my life. I grew up in a family of musicians and I started the cello when I was four. From that day forward, music has been the biggest thing in my life. There is not a day that goes by where I am not thinking about music or listening to music, or even making music myself.
Music has always been part of my life. I started playing at six, and for 17 years, cello has been the tool to express my personality. I would not be where I am today without my parents. Especially thanks to my dad, who plays bass and taught since I was a child. The best memories I have are the times when I played Schumann, Shostakovich and Dvořák cello concertos with an orchestra. I am lucky to take part to the wonderful Verbier Festival Academy and I feel very thankful to practice with great teachers and cellists.

We share an enthusiasm for bold, alternative, even underground projects and, in 2016, we decided to found the Quatuor Agate to explore our musical passions together. The German musical tradition has played an important role in our artistic training. Having all been through the Paris Conservatory, we went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ in Berlin. And it is our love for Berlin its dynamic culture, rich and eclectic musical life— that brought the four of us together for the first time.
We founded the Vera Quartet in 2015 at the Indiana University. We moved to Philadelphia last summer and are currently the String Quartet in Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music. Since very early on, we realized we all strongly believed in the power of chamber music to transform people and to ultimately contribute toward a just, egalitarian and inclusive society. We share the uniquely democratic dynamic of the string quartet with diverse audiences within and beyond the concert hall. 69

The Academy provides opportunities for professional growth away from the rehearsal room and concert stage too. So much time is spent by musicians fine-tuning their craft that little thought is often given to where a career is headed. There is no one single career path for a young artist. The Academy offers opportunities to encourage its musicians to reflect on their own strengths, what brings them joy and how their careers can evolve in meaningful ways. And on a very practical level, they learn the basics of branding, concert programming, financial planning, grant-writing, podcasting, public speaking, stage presence, team-building and physical well-being.
citizen artist project
The Academy aims to inspire and prepare a generation of young classical musicians to engage audiences, effect positive change in their communities, and grow personally and professionally. During their time in Verbier, all Academy musicians are offered opportunities to reflect on their roles and responsibilities as artists in the 21st century. Through workshops, innovative collaborations and performances in the Festival’s Unlimited programme, as well as mentorship from experts in the field, they are encouraged to take initiative to enrich communities by presenting classical music in a way that is relevant and rewarding both during the Festival and when they return to their daily lives.
FACULTY PROFESSORAT “In Verbier, young people’s minds are opened more than anywhere else. The Festival’s special energy, the formation of new friendships, and the beauty of nature all help create the most important ingredients for music—open minds, open hearts and open souls.” GÁBOR TAKÁCS-NAGY Chamber Music Faculty Music Director, Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra

RAPHAËL MERLIN
PEDJA MUZIJEVIC
From a very young age, Raphaël Merlin displayed an innate desire for diversity in music. Although he splits his time between conducting and chamber music, it is the latter occupies a central part in Merlin’s work today, as cellist of the Quatuor Ébène. After studies with the Quatuor Ysaÿe in Paris and with Eberhard Feltz, György Kurtág and Gábor TakácsNagy (including classes through the Verbier Festival Academy), the Quatuor Ébène had an unprecedented victory at the ARD Music Competition 2004. This marked the beginning of their rise, which has culminated in numerous prizes and awards. The quartet’s concerts are marked by a special élan. With their charismatic playing, their fresh approach to tradition and their open engagement with new forms, the musicians have been successful in reaching a wide audience of young listeners; they communicate their knowledge in regular masterclasses at the Conservatoire de Paris.
Hailed by critics as a ‘thinking’ musician with engaging stage presence and a gratifying combination of virtuosity and eloquence, pianist Pedja Muzijevic has defined his career with creative programming, unusual combinations of new and old music, and lasting collaborations with other artists and ensembles. The Financial Times sums him up as “a virtuoso with formidable fingers and a musician with fiercely original ideas about the music he plays.” His vision is to bring musicians together to explore new ways of presenting classical and contemporary music to audiences through curation, staging, lighting and other technology. In addition to a busy touring schedule, Muzijevic is Director of Music Progamming at the Baryshnikov Center in New York and Artistic Advisor at Montana’s Tippet Rise.

Singers are accepted for either or both of the Atelier’s opera and/or song programmes. They study their craft with a focus on a tangible project: a semi-staged performance of an opera in collaboration with the VFJO and Stanislav Kochanovsky (Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in 2019) and/or a final song recital. All singers are invited to take on a secondary role in the Festival’s mainstage opera, Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten with the VFO and Valery Gergiev. This year, for the first time, a vocologist helps the singers face and overcome physiological obstacles to singing. Also new: a collaborative pianist has been invited to train alongside the singers. With the generous support of Avec le généreux soutien de

Recent Achievements I won First Prize at the Elena Obraztsova Competition. I started learning both French and German.
Recent Achievements I helped children and people in a Thai village discover Opera and classical music. I offered a feminist book to my mother— Sorcières by Mona Chollet— and I am proud to hear her say that it changed her life.
I began to study music in my early childhood. Since then, music has accompanied me everywhere. I first learned to play the piano and then became tremendously interested in singing. I believe music is a means of expression, a way to convey everything you have in mind, a doctor for spiritual wounds. Music is an art that opens a whole world of passions, emotions, high feelings and noble impulses.
There is nothing else in the world in which I take such pleasure, for which I have so many expectations and fascination for as music. As much I love opera—especially Mozart, Strauss and Baroque repertoire—I am also very fond of art song, of how music and language can move together. I really hope to communicate my love for this genre to the broadest audience!

I am thrilled to be taking part in the Verbier Festival Academy this summer, and to also take part to the production of The Magic Flute! I truly look forward to learning aside talented students and from legendary singers. Verbier is, I am sure, going to be a very memorable time.
Music is energy. You cannot control how people will perceive it but you can try your best to infuse it with meaning, with your own experiences and share it with an audience in the hopes that it touches them. I enjoy doing that both with standard repertoire and pieces that are not as well known. I wish to touch people, to explore the possibility to feel on a really deep intimate level and the capacity music has to connect people, through different stories and experiences.

Taking part in the Verbier Festival Academy means making progress as an artist, learning a new role, gaining professional experience, working with new people and fine-tuning one’s skills. I believe opera in particular now calls for a new kind of artist—a 21st century artist who can blur the boundaries of opera and theatre, who draws inspiration from all areas of art.
I come from a musical family but was not introduced to the world of opera or classical songrepertoire until I was about 14. I went to see a production of The Magic Flute and was overwhelmed by how real and tangible the characters’ emotional journeys seemed. Throwing myself into learning to sing was a very cathartic experience. I learned to express and communicate emotions that, at that time, I didn’t feel able to let out in my everyday life.

I work very hard, but I don’t try too hard to be perfect—I think the concept is out of reach. I would rather take risks and explore all the dimensions of human expression. I try to infuse every word and every note with depth and thoughts, so that they become alive and can resonate deeply with the audience. When we get out of the way and allow the beauty of music, of the human voice to unfold, we can create a vibration that bounds us on an emotional and spiritual level. I believe music making can give us a sense of unity and connection that very few other experiences can bring.
I am not sure who I am as an artist. Every show, every rehearsal process helps define what I find important and how I want my music to touch the audience. I believe music has the power to change hearts and minds, heal wounds and inspire people to do things they never thought possible. Music helps me discover passions in a social and political round, and I wish to use my voice to be an activist and an advocate for those whose voices cannot be heard. I sincerely hope I can do my part in bettering this divided world, if even just for a few moments.

It is a great blessing to be able to communicate through music with the most inspiring musicians in a beautiful place such as Verbier. This experience will allow me to widen my perspectives, to learn more and to enjoy music at its highest level. I could not be happier to join the Verbier Festival Academy this summer.
The piano was the very first instrument I learned, but at age ten, after winning several piano competitions, I began my vocal education as I understood how much I liked singing. Music is a vessel of emotions. I am really interested in looking for various forms of expression, the philosophical ideas, aesthetic visions which belong to a particular period of time. I truly enjoy Early music, jazz and contemporary repertoire. I am very keen on discovering new pieces of music and travelling through time, which I can do thanks to music. J’aime chanter !

Whether in music or in sport, the Neva Foundation has supported the cause of youth for over a decade. As a partner of the Verbier Festival for almost as long, the Foundation has made this theme a priority in Verbier, which its support to the festival’s artist training initiatives demonstrates. Again this year, the Foundation is delighted to provide young talents from Russia the chance to participate in the Academy’s programmes for soloists, chamber musicians and conductors, and its Atelier Lyrique and Junior Orchestra—a unique opportunity to learn from the world’s greatest artists. With 19 as part of these programmes in 2019, the number of Neva Foundation scholarship beneficiaries totals more than 200 over nine years; 16 of these musicians also received an award for the realization of a professional project. During their weeks in Verbier, these talented young people live and share an experience that will leave its mark as they embark on their careers in music.

Music is a way of life. It is a way of learning, of understanding ourselves and fellow humans thanks to its universality. You do not need to understand the text in its entirety to understand the feelings and the emotions behind the music. I believe it is what draws us to music. Music might be the ultimate tool to understand history, humanity, empathy and ultimately ourselves and our connections to other people. I think the most exciting part of being an artist is to explore music and all it can teach you, while exploring yourself in order to create this kind of ultimate musical experience.
Music has always been a part of my life and singing now feels as natural as breathing. I cannot imagine myself without it. It seems music is always here to share our joy and highlight the happiest moments in our lives and I am absolutely thrilled to be part of this universe. Music is a way of collaborating with the audience to create a space where time and any sense of near reality cease to exist. We are simultaneously in conversation with the past, the present and the future. Being able to engage in this sort of examination is something which gives us a sense of catharsis, of self-knowledge and humility. This is a magical space to inhabit—different every time—and I feel incredibly lucky to do this everyday as my profession. I am thankful to the Verbier Festival Academy for giving young artists the opportunity fine-tune our skills and contribute to our communities.
I believe music is a mixture of collaboration, inspiration and perspiration. Music gives me the opportunity to come together with like-minded artists to work on a piece which has been musically crafted by the composer. And it is our task to bring all the details in the music, to give the most honest and truthful translation of what the composer had intended. As well as feeling inspired by artists who surround me, we ought to inspire audiences and to have them enter that world with us. Music is a challenging career path; it is tough and a lot of hard work. But I hope and think the audience can see in each of my performances, even if it might not be perfectly presented yet, that I am sincere and honest.

DIEGO COSSU
Tim Carroll began his career with the English Shakespeare Company before becoming Associate Director of the Northcott Theatre in Exeter. From 1999 to 2005, he was Associate Director of Shakespeare’s Globe. His ‘original practices’ productions of Shakespeare transpose the natural habitat of the Elizabethan outdoor theatre into 21st century spaces. This approach earned him success on Broadway in 2013, when his Tony-nominated Globe productions of Richard III and Twelfth Night starring Oscar-winner Mark Rylance earned ecstatic raves in The New York Times and The New Yorker. He is also known for creating edgy productions at the Factory Theatre in London. Since 2015, Carroll has been Artistic Director of Canada’s Shaw Festival.

He has explored many other fields, revealing his talents as a conductor, jazz singer, actor, narrator and actor, from Shakespeare’s works to the colourful world of cabaret.
