SPIEGELTENT La Spiegeltent est le nouveau lieu du Festival, dédié à l’Academy et au programme Unlimited. Installée en face de la Salle des Combins, elle accueille les festivaliers dans son ambiance chaleureuse et singulière. Les Spiegeltents désignaient les structures circulaires en bois, verre et tissu qui voyageaient de villages en fêtes populaires dans la Belgique de la fin du XIXe siècle. This year, the Verbier Festival introduces a new home for its Academy and Unlimited programmes, located adjacent to Salle des Combins. Spiegeltents, or magic mirrors, were travelling pavilions hand-crafted in Belgium that toured Europe at the start of the 20th century. They were a popular fairground attraction to which thousands flocked to dance on their beautiful oak floors and be entertained while nestled in their elegant seating booths. They were the ultimate cabaret and music salon.

Quatre journées d’ateliers permettent aux enfants de découvrir l’œuvre de Camille Saint-Saëns et son instrumentarium. Une équipe de pédagogues épaulés par les musiciens de la Verbier Festival Academy et d’autres musiciens invités, accompagnent les enfants dans leur découverte musicale, pendant qu’un illustrateur les guide dans la création d’illustrations qui seront projetées à l’écran lors de la représentation finale. Rejoignez le Carnaval ! The first week of the Festival invites Les Petits Festivaliers to enjoy a series of activities in preparation for a final Storytellers performance of Carnival of the Animals. Four days of workshops allow children to discover Camille Saint-Saëns’ popular work and his instrumentarium. A team of educators, supported by the musicians of the Verbier Festival Academy and other special guests, accompanies the children in their musical discovery, while an illustrator guides them in the creation of drawings that will be projected as an animated film during the final performance. Le Projet Opera Dahu initie les enfants à un monde imaginaire empli de légendes et de mythes racontés à travers l’opéra. Lors des ateliers Les Petits Papageni, les enfants deviennent acteurs, chanteurs, danseurs, scénographes et costumiers sous la direction de l’association Académie de l’opéra (Genève), de l’illustrateur et animateur Marc Philippin, et des chanteurs et instrumentistes de la Verbier Festival Academy et de la région. Ils concluent le projet en interprétant leur propre version de Die Zauberflöte (La Flûte enchantée) de Mozart. During the second week of the Festival, the Opera Dahu Project introduces children to an imaginary world filled with legends and myths told through opera. Through the project’s Les Petits Papageni workshops, children become actors, singers, dancers, scenographers and costume designers under the direction Académie de l’opéra (Geneva), illustrator and animator Marc Philippin, and singers and instrumentalists both from the Verbier Festival Academy and from the region. They conclude the project by performing their own version of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). Les activités des Petits Festivaliers s’adressent aux enfants dès 5 ans. The 3-D Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating contemporary art to promote environmentalism, education, and culture to local and international audiences. À voir travailler Rojdestvenski avec les étudiants du Conservatoire de Moscou, on se dit que c’est un peu plus compliqué que cela… The famous Russian conductor Gennadi Rozhdestvensky reveals the secrets, great and small, of conducting. “Being a conductor, has nothing to do with the arm movements, it’s a question of influence.” That is how Rozhdestvensky defines this very special art of orchestra conducting. But when we see Rozhdestvensky work with the students from the Moscow Conservatory, we realize that it’s a little more complicated than that.

Entre 1979 et 1981, Bruno Monsaingeon réalise trois films avec le pianiste Glenn Gould. Le deuxième de ces films, Un Art de la fugue, commence par une étude de la structure musicale et se transforme en une conversation animée entre Gould et le cinéaste sur les mérites respectifs de Beethoven et de Bach. Gould y joue à la fin le dernier Contrapunctus de l’Art de la fugue, qu’il considère comme la musique la plus touchante jamais écrite. Between 1979 and 1981, Bruno Monsaingeon made three films with pianist Glenn Gould. The second of these films, An Art of the Fugue, starts with a study in musical structure and develops into an animated conversation between Gould and the filmmaker about Beethoven and Bach’s respective merits. At the close, Gould plays the final Contrapunctus from The Art of the Fugue, which he considered the most moving music ever written.

Diplômé en économie et en droit, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe a effectué une importante partie de sa carrière en Amérique latine auprès de la compagnie Nestlé. À son retour en Suisse, il a assumé différents rôles dans les domaines stratégiques, marketing et communication avant de devenir administrateur délégué, puis Président du Conseil d’administration. Il a été membre des conseils d’administration de plusieurs grandes compagnies et s’est également distingué en recevant des distinctions émérites. Aujourd’hui Président honoraire de Nestlé, Vice-Président du Conseil de fondation du World Economic Forum et Président du GSDA (Geneva Science & Diplomatic Anticipator), Peter Brabeck-Letmathe assure également la présidence du Conseil de fondation du Verbier Festival. A graduate in economics, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe has spent a significant part of his career in Latin America with Nestlé. Upon his return to Switzerland, he took on various roles in the strategic, marketing and communication fields before becoming CEO and then Chairman of the Board of Directors. La Fondation Leenaards cherche à stimuler la dynamique créatrice dans l’Arc lémanique. Beatrice Fihn

Executive Director, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

Sous la direction de Beatrice Fihn depuis 2013, la Campagne internationale pour l’abolition des armes nucléaires (ICAN) a mobilisé la société civile tout au long de l’élaboration du Traité sur l’interdiction des armes nucléaires. En 2017, la Campagne reçut le prix Nobel de la paix et Beatrice Fihn prononça un discours à Oslo au nom de l’organisation. Elle a plus d’une décennie d’expérience en diplomatie du désarmement et en mobilisation de la société civile, grâce à son travail avec l’ICAN, la Ligue internationale des femmes pour la paix et la liberté et le Centre de Genève pour la politique de sécurité. Beatrice Fihn a également beaucoup écrit sur le droit des armes, le droit humanitaire, l’engagement de la société civile dans la diplomatie et les institutions multilatérales, et la perspective de genre dans le travail de désarmement. Under Beatrice Fihn’s leadership since 2013, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has worked to mobilize civil society throughout the development of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Directeur musical, Verbier Festival Orchestra

Valery Gergiev, maître dans la découverte et l’épanouissement de nouveaux talents musicaux, est sans doute un des chefs d’orchestre les plus reconnus au monde. Il est un représentant actif de l’école de direction de SaintPétersbourg et un ancien élève du légendaire professeur Ilya Musin. En 1988, il est nommé Directeur musical du Théâtre Mariinsky et, en 1996, en devient le Directeur artistique et général. Sous la direction du maestro Gergiev, le Théâtre Mariinsky devient un grand complexe de théâtre et de concert, sans équivalent dans le monde. Malgré un emploi du temps surchargé, Valery Gergiev est un habitué du Verbier Festival. En 2018, il est nommé Directeur musical du Verbier Festival Orchestra. Arguably the most distinguished conductor in the world, Valery Gergiev is a champion of discovering and nurturing new musical talent. He is a vivid representative of the St Petersburg conducting school and a former pupil of the legendary Professor Ilya Musin. In 1988 Maestro Gergiev was appointed Music Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, and in 1996 became its Artistic and General Director. Under his direction, the Mariinsky Theatre has become a major theatre and concert complex, without par anywhere in the world. Bruno Mégevand

Président, Conseil de fondation de la Cité de la musique de Genève

Bruno Mégevand est avocat au barreau de Genève et également membre de nombreux conseils d’administration, de sociétés et de conseils de fondations. Très actif dans le milieu culturel et spécialement sur la scène musicale, il est notamment Président de la Fondation pour la Cité de la Musique de Genève et membre du Conseil de fondation de l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. En 2009, Bruno Mégevand a créé la Société Gustav Mahler en hommage au musicien et préside depuis ses activités. Bruno Mégevand is a lawyer at the Geneva Bar and also a member of numerous corporate and foundation boards. Very active in the cultural field and especially on the musical scene, he is President of the Foundation for the Cité de la Musique de Genève and member of the Foundation Board of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. In 2009, he founded the Gustav Mahler Society in homage to the great composer, where he serves as President.

La mission de la Fondation est ainsi de favoriser la création littéraire et d’encourager la pratique de la lecture à travers diverses actions et activités, parmi lesquelles l’organisation d’événements culturels, la mise à disposition du public d’une grande bibliothèque multilingue, l’attribution d’un prix annuel de littérature mondiale, l’octroi de soutiens financiers et l’accueil d’écrivains en résidence. Vera Michalski-Hoffmann dirige également le groupe d’édition Libella et s’investit dans de nombreux comités tels que la Fondation Paul Sacher, le Bureau International de l’Édition Française ou encore la Fondation du Théâtre de Vidy. Vera Michalski-Hoffmann founded the Jan Michalski Foundation for Writing and Literature in memory of her husband. The Foundation’s mission is to promote literary creation and encourage the practice of reading through various actions and activities, including the organization of cultural events, the creation and operation of a large multilingual library, awarding of an annual world literature prize, granting of financial support and hosting of writers in residence. Ms Michalski-Hoffmann also heads the Libella publishing group and is active on many boards, including those of the Paul Sacher Foundation, the International Bureau of French Publishing and the Fondation du Théâtre de Vidy.

Après plus de 10 ans d’expérience en tant que donatrice privée, Lana Ojjeh Lette a obtenu une maîtrise en Développement et organisations non gouvernementales à la London School of Economics en 2010. Diplômé d’HEC et gestionnaire de private equity, Pascal Vinarnic a fondé la Fondation Demeter en 1994. Celle-ci vise à renforcer les compétences et l’autonomie financière des structures engagées dans des actions humanitaires et sociales, en apportant à la fois un appui financier et des conseils. La Fondation soutient ainsi des programmes pilotes proposant des solutions innovantes contre la vulnérabilité et l’exclusion, en associant technologie, entrepreneuriat et économie sociale. Pascal Vinarnic is a graduate of HEC and a private equity manager. He founded the Fondation Demeter in 1994, with the aim of strenghtening the skills and financial autonomy of structures involved in humanitarian and social actions by providing both financial support and advice. The Foundation supports pilot programmes proposing innovative solutions against vulnerability and exclusion, combining technology, entrepreneurship and the social economy.
