A private or independent school that qualifies as an Exemplary High Performing School indicates that the achievement of the school’s students in the most recent year places the school in the top 15 percent in the nation in English language arts and mathematics as measured by a nationally normed test or in the top 15 percent of its state as measured by a state test.

A Growing Percentage of Veritas Students qualify for the Duke University TIP In the 2015-2016 school year, 2 of 3 students (66 %) in the 3rd through 7th grades qualified for the Duke TIP. In 2016-2107, that number grew to 74%. In order to qualify, students must score in the 95th percentile nationally on any standardized test score, such as TerraNova. What this means is that 74% of Veritas students in 3rd through 7th grade scored in the 95th percentile in comparison to students throughout the United States!

Veritas joins membership with the Society for Classical Learning The Society for Classical Learning (SCL) has existed since the mid-1990s to facilitate and encourage thinking and discussion among professionals associated with Christ-centered education in the liberal arts tradition. The Society provides a forum in which educators can share wisdom, experience, and ideas as they deepen their understanding of classical theory into everyday, real world education. The Society is committed to historic Christianity as expressed in the Nicene Creed and to exploring the relationship of Christ to the broader culture. Society for Classical Learning’s stated Mission The Society for Classical Learning exists to foster human flourishing by making classical Christian education thrive. Message from the Head of School Dear Family and Friends of Veritas, With the 2016-17 academic year behind us and your family already engaged in the typical summertime routines, let me express my sincere gratitude for your support and dedication to Veritas. As you read through this Annual Report - the first of its kind for Veritas - my hope is that you will see your part in helping make our school such an extraordinary place and that you would sense the gratitude we have for your generosity. “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give” Winston Churchill once said. And this has certainly been true of the Veritas community this past year from every volunteer who stepped on campus offering their help to each financial contribution you made to support our students. I hope you will join me in celebrating this year’s accomplishments with a profound appreciation for those who invested in furthering our mission in a variety of ways. As I reflect on my first year at Veritas as Head of School, I am humbled and proud to serve such a unique school, and energized by the bright future ahead. Over the last year, we welcomed the largest number of students on campus; we purchased our once rented property; we made improvements to the facilities; we had the most successful auction event in our history; we again had an outstanding year in academic achievement; and we will graduate another class of students who have been nurtured, challenged, and prepared for their high school experience and beyond. Our graduates will carry with them an imprint of Veritas left by every faculty interaction, curious conversation, and feeling of the deepest sense of care about their well-being – academically, socially, and spiritually. As we look towards next year, I do so with excitement about the possibilities. We will finish another reaccreditation cycle, strengthening an already excellent academic program; our vision will be set for the next three years as our strategic plan will be shared in early 2018; and lastly, we will continue seeing facility and aesthetic improvements across campus to improve the overall experience for our students and community. But no brick and mortar or reworking of existing space can replace what is most special about Veritas: the focus on Christ as central to education and the meaningful relationships that enhance such learning experiences. I am immensely honored to serve Veritas and I look forward to the journey next year of educating our students for the present and eternity. On behalf of everyone at Veritas, thank you for your continuing investments in this extraordinary place.

From the Chairman of the Board I am grateful to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees. Further, I am encouraged by the solid leadership and gracious demeanor of each Board member. The Board represents the strength, diversity, and passion of the Veritas community. This year we accomplished our three primary objectives and set the stage for the continued growth of Veritas. First, with the appointment of Mr. Sewell as Head of School we completed our succession plan and secured quality leadership for the future. We are thankful to have Mr. Sewell and his entire team in place and look forward to benefiting from their creativity and experience. Second, we became owners of the facility and immediately went to work on near term enhancements. We also improved some operational areas where you had provided feedback, such as school to parent communication. Third, we began work on the renewed strategic plan. In the 2017—18 school year, we look forward to sharing a completed plan, including a long term campus strategy and development vision for the school. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for supporting Veritas with your time, money and most importantly your trust. Partnering with you to educate our children consistent with the mission and objectives of Veritas is an honor.

In 2017 The Veritas Fund was established to give donors more options for donating, both in the timing and types of gifts. The Veritas Fund is administered by the National Christian Foundation (NCF), a non-profit oprganization that helps donors give more wisely and tax-efficiently. NCF accepts non-cash gifts (for example stocks, real estate, and business interests) and is the nation’s largest provider of donor-advised funds. Donor-advised funds allow donors to time their giving more systemtically and then respond to the school’s campaigns from the Fund. Donations play an invaluable role in providing opportunities for our students because tuition alone does not cover all costs of operations. Veritas Christian Academy of Houston sincerely appreciate those who generously supported the school in 2016-17. To accomplish the school’s goals, it takes the support of the entire community: parents, trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends.  Through their contributions, these valued constituents have ensured that our students continue to have the very best educational experience possible. It is also with appreciation that we recognize those businesses and community organizations that provide financial support and event sponsorship to Veritas. Thank you for your support!

The Veritas Christian Academy of Houston Conservatory of Music, which launched in January 2017, seeks to bring each of its students to an intellectual understanding of the theoretical, historical, and stylistic aspects of musical practice; to relate each of these to the vast literature of music, and to demand the highest level possible of technical and artistic achievement in performance. The Conservatory’s instructors are accomplished musicians in their fields, having achieved the highest levels of musical training.
