In pursuit of its mission, the Veritas community is guided by five core values. Our core values represent the philosophical commitments of our community; these values are reflected in our past and guide our commitment to the future. The core values of Veritas embody the promises made for our students’ development.
Academic Excellence
Veritas embraces a history of excellence in academic achievement. We are committed to challenging our students to their highest potential in academics and stretching their intellectual boundaries, seeking to model and impart the virtues of inquiry, preparation, and discipline, in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding.
Character Formation
Veritas educates holistically, both character and mind. Moral formation and mature behavior are of equal value with the acquisition of knowledge. We are committed to developing students’ hearts and minds, seeking to instill in them both knowledge and Christian values.
Biblical Literacy
Veritas seeks to shape our students’ thinking through scripture both by understanding biblical content and through a deeper awareness of its meaning and ethical application. We believe that our students’ minds are informed and fashioned through Christian studies and by mastering core competencies of the Bible.
Classical Foundation
Veritas is committed to a classical pedagogy to develop our students’ intellectual abilities and assist them to acquire the skills for good scholarship. The principles of classical thought inform and guide the school in its curricular aims to prepare our students for success beyond Veritas.
Intentional Engagement
Veritas values providing a variety of engagement opportunities both curricular and co-curricular for the development of each student. The classroom, the playing field, travel exposure, fine arts integration, and community service are all part of the laboratory of learning for Veritas students.

From The Head of School Dear Families and Friends: With the 2017-18 school year several weeks behind us, and with a few more moments to reflect on the past year, we would like to thank you for your support, your generosity to our school, and above all, entrusting us with the education and care of your children. Thank you to our entire community for supporting our Annual Fund and An Evening on the Green. It is through these annual events that we are able to accomplish our mission and cover the full cost of our operation. Our fundraising initiatives help us offer financial assistance to students, provide professional development opportunities to our faculty, and make improvements to our campus that extends learning experiences and improves the overall quality of each child’s education. As you may know, this year marked fifteen years since Veritas’ inception. Our first graduates are early in their careers, others taking their first steps into a job, while some are just beginning postgraduate study, and others embarking on their college experience. One of the highlights of my year was visiting several of our Texas universities and spending time with our alumni. It was exciting to hear their stories about college life, how well they are performing, and what’s next for them in college or on the career front. It was enjoyable touring their campuses and reminiscing with them about their days at Veritas. With several years past now from them being on our campus, relationships with faculty and the impact they had on their education and faith were paramount in their comments. I believe our recent graduates present one of the clearest measures of our school’s mission and its success. I met with one of our alumni a few weeks ago. She had just completed her undergraduate degree and will begin medical school in the fall. The final semester in college before completing her degree, she spent a semester in the northeast studying at a seminary. I asked her why she had decided to take a semester away as she was concluding her studies. Her answer was that after spending four years in the sciences she wanted to take a semester to study and refocus again on what is of ultimate value, her faith. Stories of our alumni, like these, drive us as Christian educators. Our hope is that our students leave the walls of Veritas having developed a keen mind, a character reflective of God’s kingdom, and a heart for helping others. We hope, like her, our students will be shaped by our faculty and always keep at their core, those values that not only give meaning in life, but give them the initiative and direction to serve God and others. We had a very active admissions this year and we appreciate all the families that referred us. We encourage everyone to continue to be our ambassadors. The number one motivator of a prospective family to inquire about Veritas is when they hear from you as a current or former parent of our school. Of the many prospective families I meet, I typically refer them to our parents for their thoughts and experience. We are grateful for your encouragement to friends and colleagues to visit us. Lastly, this year, we were pleased to share with you a preview of the new five-year Strategic Plan that will include creating a new Student Learning Center through remodeling the previous church offices. The Student Center will contain a new collaborative technology center, a library, and be designed for multi-purpose community events. We are very excited to share with you the full strategic plan that will arrive in your mailbox by the end of July. I wish everyone a relaxing and fun-filled summer! Brad Sewell Head of School

Academic Highlights Veritas students performed exceptionally well in regards to Duke TIP qualifications. Approximately 70% of 3rd-8th grade Veritas students have qualified for the Duke TIP by placing within the 95th percentile in a core subject on their standardized test. This placement puts the student in the top 5th percentile in that particular subject nationally in comparison to their peers.
The 2017-2018 school year brought about a change in the standardized testing that is administered at Veritas. Moving from the TerraNova to IOWA Assessments, Veritas students have the most updated norm-referenced test available. In addition, the IOWA Assessments will allow us to track the growth progress of individual students as well as continue to serve as a reference point in relation to Duke TIP qualifications.
Veritas joined the membership of The Southern Association of Independent Schools the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. The school will now pursue accredition with SAIS, in addition to Veritas’ current Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditations.
Academic Competitions in the 2017-18 school year included Speech Meets for both Lower and Middle School, the Spelling Bee, Creative Writing, Math Olympics, Fine Arts Festival, and the Music Festival, which included both Lower School and Middle School Concert Choirs. Veritas students represented themselves and the school tremendously well, with many having superior or excellent rankings, and top five overall placements.

Service Learning
C
Formation and Intentional Engagement are two Core Values of Veritas. Both encompass elements that are important to serving others. Service learning provides our students opportunities to engage with the needs of others. It allows students to develop healthy hearts and minds as they begin to view the world through a lens of service and selflessness. This year’s service learning projects included student engagement with the local Bellaire community by visiting The Gardens of Bellaire, a senior living community, and with the City of Houston through Bread of Life, Inc. and Star of Hope Mission. haracter
Mrs. Berger’s fourth grade class encouraged the Bellaire senior community by performing excerpts of their Christmas production, Christmas Hang Ups. Mrs. Hering, Mrs. Ingram, and Mrs. Richardson’s third grade classes and their families gave a Saturday morning to serve others in Houston through Bread of Life, Inc. Middle School students served alongside the Star of Hope Mission by packing sack lunches during Advisory time; these lunches were distributed to various members of Houston’s homeless population.

Faculty and Staff With a firm belief in the pursuit of knowledge and the desire to improve, our faculty participated in various professional development opportunities this school year. Early Education Department at the Frog Street SPLASH Conference This year, the Early Education department adopted a new curriculum called Frog Street. The new curriculum is research-based and tailored to the natural developmental stages of students from birth-five. The SPLASH Conference, sponsored by Frog Street, is designed to present cutting-edge strategies and the latest research-based educational trends to help teachers enhance their individual classrooms and improve their students’ overall performance.
Faculty Retreat in Galveston The first two days of faculty in-service this year included a faculty retreat providing teachers time to collaborate and team build. Team building exercises included a trip to Escape the Island which encouraged teamwork to strategize an escape plan in the various rooms. There was also extensive training in Veritas policies and procedures as well as practical skills training.

Board of Trustees - New Members Daniel Leung, MD, grew up being exposed to the Lord by his parents who modeled compassion, perseverance, prayer, and sacrifice for others. In the 3rd grade, he gave his life to the Lord and was baptized at Tulsa Chinese Christian Church. During his undergraduate years at the University of Oklahoma, he learned to live out his faith in a very specific way; the gospel became real to him. Dr. Leung graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BS in Biochemistry and received his MD from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. He completed his Pediatrics residency at Baylor College of Medicine/ Texas Children’s Hospital and his fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at the University of Pennsylvania/Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. For the last 9 years, he has worked as a gastroenterologist and transplant liver physician at Texas Children’s Hospital where he serves as Medical Director of the Viral Hepatitis Program. He is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and currently serves as Director of Clinical Research. Dr. Daniel Leung and Dr. Tina Leung have been married for 15 years and have three children who attend Veritas.
Teandra Gordon, Ph.D, LMFT-S, grew up in Houston and began a relationship with the Lord at the young age of nine. After her freshman year at Baylor University, she realized that her life would be spent giving to others and she wanted to be more rooted and grounded in her faith. She attended Rhema Bible Training Center in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where she majored in Pastoral Care. She received a Bachelor’s Degree of Psychology from the University of St. Thomas in 2004. For three years, she worked as an elementary school teacher while completing a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Houston in Clear Lake. She worked at the Council on Alcohol and Drugs in Houston where she counseled on maternal substance abuse for CPS. Later she completed a PhD in Counselor Education at Sam Houston State University. Prior to receiving her PhD, she wrote her first book, Purpose Filled Parenting. She currently serves as Director of School Based Therapy Services at Legacy Community Health. Dr. Gordon and her husband, Brian have been married for 15 years and have five wonderful children. Their oldest son attends high school at St. John’s School; they have three girls at Veritas and recently were blessed with their fifth child, a baby girl. As a family, they love worshiping, praying, and honoring our Lord Jesus.
