In pursuit of its mission, the Veritas community is guided by five core values. Our core values represent the philosophical commitments of our community; these values are reflected in our past and guide our commitment to the future. The core values of Veritas embody the promises made for our students’ development. Academic Excellence

Veritas embraces a history of excellence in academic achievement. We are committed to challenging our students to their highest potential in academics and stretching their intellectual boundaries, seeking to model and impart the virtues of inquiry, preparation, and discipline, in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding.

Character Formation

Veritas educates holistically, both character and mind. Moral formation and mature behavior are of equal value with the acquisition of knowledge. We are committed to developing students’ hearts and minds, seeking to instill in them both knowledge and Christian values.

Biblical Literacy

Veritas seeks to shape our students’ thinking through scripture both by understanding biblical content and through a deeper awareness of its meaning and ethical application. We believe that our students’ minds are informed and fashioned through Christian studies and by mastering core competencies of the Bible.

Classical Foundation

Veritas is committed to a classical pedagogy to develop our students’ intellectual abilities and assist them to acquire the skills for good scholarship. The principles of classical thought inform and guide the school in its curricular aims to prepare our students for success beyond Veritas.

Intentional Engagement

Veritas values providing a variety of engagement opportunities both curricular and co-curricular for the development of each student. The classroom, the playing field, travel exposure, fine arts integration, and community service are all part of the laboratory of learning for Veritas students.

Letter from the Head of School Veritas Family and Friends: It has been a remarkable year for Veritas. As you turn the pages of this year’s Annual Report you will see many examples of a school community that is truly special. It takes many people with a diverse set of skills, competencies, passions, and commitments to create a vibrant school community. This is certainly true of Veritas. Our faculty’s passion and commitment to see our students succeed is the keystone of our school culture. Their dedication has always been why families are attracted to Veritas. The depth of care for each student and holding high standards in developing each child to their highest potential is a core principal of the school. This year marks my ninth year serving Veritas and during that time many students, families, trustees, and faculty members have come and gone but the heart of the school has remained the same – a school committed to excellence in academics and the pursuit of Christian character. Thank you as always for being ambassadors of our school. So many of the families that I meet and welcome to our campus do so because of your recommendation. I would like to thank our entire community for supporting our Annual Fund and the 2019 Auction - Building for the Future. These initiatives help us offer financial assistance to deserving students, offer professional development opportunities for our faculty, and make improvements to our campus that enhances the overall quality of each child’s education. Thank you for giving to our current students and those who will one day attend Veritas as well. Your generosity will continue to make a difference for years to come. In the development of any school, you will always find a community of people committed to seeing it take the next step. I believe one of Veritas’s significant steps in the next decade will be the integration of the Student Learning Center into the daily life of every student. We have desired to have a space on campus designed to instill the value of reading, reflection, and contemplation. We have wanted a place that will encourage students to collaborate and learn skills that we know will have direct transference to their future. Because of this space, new educational habits will be formed, new skills acquired, and the architecture of our students’ experiences will be enlarged. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff we are truly grateful for your financial support that will expand and transform our students’ learning experiences on campus in the next decade. As you read through the following pages, you will see an abundance of evidence of the generosity of the Veritas community. As a classical school, Veritas has always had one foot firmly set in emphasizing a strong liberal arts program while equally holding a high standard for math and science, which has been exemplified this year by the newly incorporated STEAM program. STEAM classes stimulate creative thinking and encourage innovation. You will see examples in the following pages of our students working in project-based environments learning to ask questions and solve problems. The inclusion of STEAM courses into our curriculum augments a classical education that highly values inquiry-based learning, and we have been thrilled by the efforts and progress we have observed this year. Lastly, thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. Our faculty and administration labor with full effort to provide our students with the very best and prepare them with an outstanding educational foundation and a mark of Christ’s character in their development. God bless, Brad Sewell Head of School Head of School, Brad Sewell, with his wife Janell at the 2019 Annual Auction - Building for the Future.

The Veritas Way The Veritas Way is a set of statements meant to encourage specific habits of mind to develop character during a child’s education at Veritas. Each statement serves as a daily reminder of ways to approach different situations we encounter in life. Each statement transcends any one class and will be a reminder and stimulus to help form excellent habits. We desire for our students to have these habits of mind and character when they leave Veritas.

Strategic Plan Updates

marked the beginning of our five-year strategic plan, A Foundation for Life. With the aid of various members of our community - faculty, parents, students, alumni, administration, and the Board of Trustees - our five-year strategic plan was birthed. Outlining four specific goals with strategic initiatives in mind, the purpose of the strategic plan is to guide Veritas into continued improvement with the overarching goal of providing our students and families the best overall educational experience. The following pages will provide updates on specific goals and initiatives which were outlined in the original strategic plan. In keeping with our commitment to place Veritas on the best path for continued excellence in Christian education in the classical tradition, our school has implemented various initiatives as part of our strategic goals.

Great Books Program Preview Veritas is a school that is rooted in the classical tradition. A significant part of a classical education is the incorporation of reading classical works of literature. In order to continue enhancing the educational experience at Veritas, we have been working toward the implementation of a Great Books Program that will challenge each student at Veritas - from PreK3 to graduation - with core reading material. The books chosen in the program have been vetted according to specific standards and their relevance to multiple generations to be considered a literary classic.

In the early years, parental involvement in early literacy is a critical component of the Great Books Program. As much research has suggested, parents are highly encouraged to read to their children in their early years. Children who have books read to them tend to develop enhanced language skills and have a broad range of vocabulary. Parents will find many familiar books included in the program for our Early Education students.

14 • Annual Report

The Great Books Program for Lower School students will incorporate varying levels of reading proficiency. Chapter books are integrated midway through Lower School which introduces students to different types of literary devices. As students progress to the Middle School level, they will be introduced to literary works by C.S. Lewis, Jules Verne, Mark Twain, and many other highly acclaimed authors. Look for the release of the Great Books list in our curriculum this fall in conjunction with the opening of the Library within the new Student Learning Center!

SAIS Accreditation From its founding, Veritas has always embraced the highest standard in academic excellence. Accreditation for independent schools is akin to a financial audit, and we have sought the highest of standards to help guide our academic pursuits. The 2017-2018 academic year saw Veritas become new members of the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). With a mission to strengthen member schools by providing a high quality accreditation process, comprehensive professional growth opportunities, and visionary leadership development programs, our Administration found that membership with SAIS to be a valuable pursuit. In addition to membership, the school is beginning to undergo a full accreditation process with SAIS which will provide us with yet another highly respected and credible educational accountability organization. This accreditation will be in addition to the ones that we currently hold with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). As of last summer, SAIS has over 370 member schools in 13 U.S. states, the Caribbean, and Latin America, making SAIS the largest regional independent school association in the country. Over 220,000 students are represented in those member schools. The longevity of school existence also varies with the oldest school being founded in 1728 and the newest school being founded in 2013. Our full accreditation process was initiated earlier this spring with a site visit from our SAIS Accreditation Chairperson. We will finalize accreditation with SAIS in the Fall of 2019.

16 • Annual Report

STEAM: Science • Technology • Engineering • Art • Mathematics The first goal of our Strategic Plan, A Foundation for Life, is to enhance programs and curriculum. Through our programs and curriculum, we strive to be both classical and innovative. One of our key initiatives is to help students identify and solve problems with project-based learning through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). This year, we saw the creation of a STEAM Lab as we incorporated STEAM into our curriculum. Projects in the STEAM Lab began with students learning robotics as well as basic and advanced coding using bit bots. As the year progressed, each class was challenged to improve our current campus and community. Each class identified a project that would improve the student experience on campus. Projects per grade level: Eighth Grade - Mobile Computer Tables for the STEAM Lab Seventh Grade - Gagaball Pit for the Blacktop Sixth Grade - Storage cubbies for the Middle School Bathrooms in D-Wing Fifth Grade - Student games (Cornhole) Fourth Grade - Student games (Blocks) Third Grade - Student games (Cornhole) Second Grade - Board game STEAM has allowed our students to have an outlet to pursue a more inquiry-based learning format that promotes problem identification and critical thinking skills. Our students have greatly benefitted from our first year of introducing the STEAM Program.

Strategic Plan Updates Student Learning Center As we look ahead to the transition of summer, we are excited to begin the contruction of the Student Learning Center. One of our strategic initiatives over the next five years is to transform and renovate specific facilities to expand learning experiences for our students. A part of this goal is creating a new space that will be transformative for our students’ learning experiences and become the central educational hub of the campus. Because of the generous support of our families and friends at our annual auction - Building for the Future - the new Student Learning Center will become a reality next year. The build-out of this space will begin at the end of this school year and continue throughout summer in anticipation of its opening this fall. We are eager to see the completion of this space because of the expanded educational experiences it will give our students. As stated in our Strategic Plan, we aim to expand the overall educational experience of our students through targeted facility transformation. To accomplish this, we will update and renovate existing facilities to improve and create new learning spaces. The new Student Learning Center will be equipped with:

• A library for research, reading, and contemplation

• A collaborative technology lab

• A multipurpose community space

• A space designed for student and faculty collaboration
