On the cover: Mid-March 2020 ushered in the Coronavirus Pandemic (known at COVID-19) into the United States. Veritas, along with most schools across the nation, closed campus and moved into a period of distance and remote learning options - mostly in the form of video conferencing and live streaming sessions. Due to the extended closure of our campus for approximately six weeks, the Veritas Administration implemented the newly crafted Veritas Distance Learning Plan (DLP) to provide continuity in learning and community for Veritas students and families. As a tribute to this time frame of the DLP, the cover resembles the online classroom with its mosaic of various faces. Annual Report

Head of School Brad Sewell Veritas Family and Friends: It has been a remarkable year for Veritas. As you turn the pages of this year’s Annual Report, you will see many examples of a school community that is distinguished by its generosity, commitment, drive for excellence, and Christian character. Our Annual Report is a collection of the year’s highlights, defining moments, and just business as usual in the life of a school. In reflecting on this year, it is impossible not to mention this moment of confinement and distancing due to the current pandemic. Following spring break, Veritas shuttered its doors along with most other schools in the country and shifted online to distance learning. Online learning has been an entirely new endeavor for many of our students, taking time to adjust to this new reality and establishing a new normal. Our faculty worked around the clock, investing more hours in lesson preparation since entering the teaching field, all to provide our students with the highest quality experience possible, making adjustments, tweaking systems, and trying to find a new equilibrium for everyone. This has been a period like none other, and thus a continual adjustment for our community. When we look back on this period of time that confined us to our homes, and suddenly our children’s education was carried out remotely, I hope we will take away several valuable reminders. We will remember that it showed very clearly how much we value a community like Veritas. It will remind us that when a challenge is met with perseverance, we can carry on educating even when we cannot physically meet together. And, it will remind us that even in the midst of a pandemic that as Christians we have hope. Our students will recall this moment the rest of their lives. I pray they will look back on this event, many not fully understanding all that’s happened, but seeing good things that emerged from this pandemic. While separated because of social distancing, our resolve to foster the academic growth and spiritual foundation of our students while supporting their health and well-being has only strengthened. We can all recognize that a campus with facilities designed to enhance student learning adds value to a child’s educational experience. Yet in moments like these, when access to our campus is denied, we are reminded what is most essential to the development of our children – the teacher/student relationship. Our faculty’s passion and commitment to see our students succeed has always been the keystone of our school culture. The depth of care for each student and a commitment to high standards in developing each child to their highest potential is a fundamental principle. This has never been truer. I would like to thank our entire community for supporting our Annual Fund and the 2020 Auction – Vision 2020. We are grateful for your generosity and commitment to helping Veritas impact deserving students each day. The level of family participation in our Annual Fund this year, in conjunction with meeting our 2020 Auction goal, reflects the dedication of our community to seeing our children and others succeed. Your generosity will continue to make a difference for years to come. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff, we are truly grateful for your financial support that will expand and transform our students’ learning experiences on campus in the next decade. With your help, we have made such progress in accomplishing strategic initiatives. With the transformational effect the Raad Learning Center’s had on our school life, we look ahead with tremendous excitement and anticipation to welcoming our community into Foundation Hall when we return to campus next year. Lastly, thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. Our faculty and administration labor with full effort to provide our students with the very best and prepare them with an outstanding educational foundation. As always, thank you for your continued support as we strive to provide your child with a Foundation for Life. God bless, Brad Sewell

The Raad Learning Center

During Thanksgiving 2019, the Veritas Community had much to be thankful for. The School Administration and Board was about to unveil its largest construction project since the school’s inception in 2003. The ribbon cutting ceremony was the official opening of the newly remodeled student learning center. The ceremony, however, was not just about the building - it was also about the namesake of the building, Mrs. Lamia Raad. Honoring her work and dedication in building the foundation and shaping the success of Veritas Christian Academy for more than a decade. As a founding member of Veritas and as its second Head of School, Lamia Raad helped to set the trajectory for Veritas’ success today. She poured her heart and soul into this community, and the school leadership wanted to ennoble her contributions to Veritas by naming the new space The Raad Learning Center (RLC).

school students utilizing the much needed research space, computer classes in the technology laboratory, specialists working individually with students in the new conference room, and even our Parent Teacher Fellowship Prayer Team meeting weekly to pray over the school community. Special events have also seen that the RLC is living up to its design and purpose - from Family Day and History & Science Fair, Open Houses, and even the first ever Alumni gathering in school history!

The RLC was made possible by the generous donations of our community during our Annual Auction Event in February 2019, which set the precedent and the bar for future auction events. At the time, the proceeds from the event were the highest in school history, only surpassed by this year’s annual Since its opening, the Veritas community has graced the space auction, which raised money for the future Foundation Hall for numerous learning moments. These include reading time (our previous auditorium). Thank you to all of our donors with Mrs. Moore and the early education students, middle who made the Raad Learning Center possible!

July 2016 saw many changes take place at Veritas Christian Academy. Lamia Raad, long-time Head of School and one of the founding members of the school, had just retired a month earlier. Brad Sewell, who had been previously the Deputy Head of School under Mrs. Raad, became the Interim Head of School and later Veritas’ next permanent Head of School. Mr. Sewell also created the administrative team to help oversee the operations of the school, and a handful of new teachers and staff members joined the ranks. Most importantly, however, was Veritas’ acquisition of the physical campus at 7000 Ferris Street, Bellaire. The long planned purchase of the physical property that Veritas called home became a reality. At that point, Veritas had been leasing the property since moving to the location for the 2004-2005 Academic Year. Upon acquiring the property, the Board of Trustees made the decision to approve a few major projects that would enhance the property and strengthen the educational experience of Veritas students. The projects were: 1.

Completed - Create classroom spaces on the ground floor of the “D Building” which were previously unused. Four classrooms were constructed which provided more learning spaces, including our current STEAM Lab. 2. Completed - Construct an outdoor space that encompassed the previously unused area

behind the gymnasium/cafeteria. The space was previously unused except for a small storage shed being utilized by the Athletics and Physical Education Department. This space is now The Green. 3. Completed - Reconfigure and reconstruct the interior building which included the former “church offices” and teacher’s lounge. The vision for creating a student learning center was birthed later. The space was previously used as a small library, teacher’s lounge, and makeshift storage space, this is now our Raad Learning Center and encompasses a collaborative technology lab and school library. 4. The final approved projected involved the redesign of the current auditorium to provide an improved space that will help to enhance our Fine Arts Department. The space will include ample seating space and improved audio/ visual equipment. The vision of a multiuse space - both for fine arts and other educational uses - was created by a committee and developed the concept of Foundation Hall. The Hall will provide the original stated goals, but will additionally provide an open, multiuse area which will include the ability to divide the space for various purposes. The new construction of Foundation Hall is set to begin in May/June 2020 and will see the completion of Phase I of the two-phase project. This phase will consist of: • Remodeling the interior space to create an open, flexible area for seating and activities. • Improving lighting. • Installing new flooring for multipurpose activities. • Acquiring new seating options for various configurations. Phase I of Foundation Hall is expected to be completed in time to begin the 2020-2021 Academic Year, and was made possible by the record breaking generosity of donors to our recent Annual Auction,Vision 2020. Funded by the upcoming Annual Auction on February 26, 2021, Phase II is anticipated to begin construction in the summer of 2021 and be completed for the 2021-2022 AcademicYear. We look forward to another record breaking event to see the completion of Foundation Hall.

Academic Competitions able to participate in the Regional Spelling Bee as an alternate due to Audrey’s inability to participate. Julia and Matthew did not stop there. At the Regional Spelling Bee, which was hosted in Plano, TX, they both placed in the top six regionally. Julia finished 1st overall and qualified for the National Spelling Bee which was scheduled to be hosted in Washington DC. Matthew finished 6th overall which made him the first alternate for the National Spelling Bee. Unfortunately, the National Spelling Bee, which was scheduled for the end of April, was cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Annually, Veritas students compete in various academic competitions which allows them to go head-to-head with students from other area independent schools. Competitions include the Spelling Bee, Math Olympics, Speech Meet, Creative Writing Competition, Choir Festival, and the Art Festival. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and the statewide school closures and movement into distance learning, Veritas was unable to compete in the Choir and Art Festivals. However, our students did have the opportunity to participate in the Spelling Bee, Math Olympics, Speech Meet and Creative Writing Competition. Our students did a tremendous job at all of the academic competitions that they participated in, however, a few are worth highlighting.

For Math Olympics, quite a few students participated and In the Spelling Bee,Veritas sent five students, one student from each grade level had 2-3 students participating in each area fourth through eighth grades. Varsity sports in the Fall and Winter seasons did tremendously well - especially the girls sports. Both Varsity Volleyball and Girls Basketball recorded undefeated seasons for the first time in school history, and secured championships in their division. The Boys Flag Football team reached the playoffs again, after missing out last season. Lastly, the Varsity Boys Basketball team finished with only two losses in their season. Junior Varsity teams (Volleyball and Basketball) showed success and promise for a bright future. With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Spring sports (Tennis and Track & Field) could not complete or embark on their competitive seasons but both were able to begin practices and future development. The Athletic Awards Ceremony will still be held but in a virtual format to celebrate the accomplishments of our student athletes.

Veritas Alumni

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy once said of school, “I think the success of any school can be measured by the contribution the alumni make to our national life. If our alumni are any indication of the success taking place within Veritas, then a look into our past provides us hope and tremendous excitement for our future. Veritas saw a huge influx of alumni who have come back to visit - from our Annual Chili Cook Off working as judges to our first ever alumni gathering event on campus. Veritas alumni stretch across current high school students to those established within their careers. Their interests and careers span the medical field, engineering, humanities, and the arts. Alumni who visited our campus were awed by the various changes and improvements - especially with the Raad Learning Center, which hosted our campus alumni gathering. They all echoed excitement for the future of the school! Annual Report

SAIS Accreditation Since Veritas’ inception it has always been an institution that pursued the highest standards of excellence and best practices in the field of education. Accreditation for private schools is a voluntary process of self-evaluation and continuous improvement that reflects compliance with required standards/indicators, involves a self-study, and includes a peer review by educators from other schools. The process that a school must go through respects and recognizes each school’s story, culture, history, mission, and goals, while still fulfilling stringent and focused compliance requirements.

grade is a reflection of the standards held by the school. For more than two years, our Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty worked toward the goal of gaining accreditation through SAIS, a leader in independent school education.

Veritas intentionally and voluntarily underwent a thorough examination to scrutinize our school and its programs by other educators through the lens of best practices in independent schooling. We are very thankful to have completed this process, gained accreditation, and report to you the standard Veritas has attained. One of the most unique and outstanding programs that Veritas has to offer is our Cultural Expeditions Program, which begins in the middle school years. The annual class trips are highly anticipated by middle school students and provides a highlight

Annual Report

A highlight regarding the newly added destination of New York and Boston was given in our annual magazine, The Chronicum, showed the added benefit of visiting these two historical cities. Equally as exciting as the new trip to New York and Boston, the eighth grade capstone trip to London and Oxford is truly highly anticipated by our students. For many, it is the first international trip that they take. Additionally, the rich history of London - being a couple of millennia old - overshadows the brevity of American history and provides our students with visits to buildings that are older than 1,000 years old. With its many historical landmarks, it comes to no surprise why this trip serves as the capstone to the Cultural Expeditions

Program and functions as the final trip for our upcoming graduates. It truly provides them with a step back into time and history. Some of the sites that our students visit include Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, the Globe Theatre, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the British Museum. The last day of the trip included a visit to Oxford where our students visited Oxford University, visiting Christ Church College and the Bodleian Library. Our students safely returned stateside just before the begin of our Spring Break.

He then attended public high school and a public university for his undergraduate degree. While he had a strong Christian foundation in childhood, it wasn’t until his time in college where his faith became much more real and personal. He began to see his faith in action and developed faith principles that have guided his life since. His post-graduate studies, in addition to his MBA, led him to pursue a degree at Dallas Theological Seminary. He has both an BBA and MBA from Texas A&M University. David and his wife Rebecca, have worked together in supporting various ministries and causes, including planting two churches in Houston and one in Berlin, Germany, and aiding other causes such as health projects in Nepal.
