On the cover: The beginning of the 2020-2021 Academic Year included various health and safety guidelines that followed advice outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. One of these was the use of face coverings and social distancing of 6 feet or more. The Veritas campus was altered; however, all members of our community, from parents, faculty and staff, and students were relieved and excited to have an on-campus and in-person educational experience. Top - 1st grader Benjamin strikes a pose while hanging out in the courtyard. Middle - Kindergarten student Julianna takes a “mask break” during recess as she slides down the slide. Bottom - Choir teacher Erin McDaniels teaches a group of students in the gym to provide for ample spacing between students.
Annual Report 3
Head of School Brad Sewell
Dear Veritas Community: As we march toward the end of a historic year in education, one forever etched in our memories, I am reminded of many moments that tested our mettle yet reflected our ability to adapt. The ever changing landscape of 2020-21 has revealed much about our school and the profound commitment our faculty and staff bring to their jobs each day. These dedicated professionals demonstrated love of our students more this year than any I’ve ever observed. They sacrificed so much to see our students through the twists and turns of a challenging year. They toiled endlessly to perfect the art of teaching and learning even as they toggled between online and in-person, listening to virtual students in one ear and taking questions at the same time from those in person. It’s no wonder why a leading topic in the national discourse about education is teacher burnout. I sincerely appreciate our faculty’s hard work, resilience, and positive can-do attitude this year. It’s not that our faculty, staff, and students merely survived this year, but they thrived in the moments of challenge. Due to these dedicated individuals our students’ educational progress was not impeded because of the pandemic. As Christian educators, we hope that our students leave the walls of Veritas having developed a keen mind, a character reflective of God’s kingdom, and a heart for helping others. We hope our students will be shaped by our faculty and always keep at their core those values that not only give meaning in life but also the initiative and direction to serve God and others. This year, we’ve observed in our faculty and staff that type of virtuous commitment on behalf of their students. Because of this commitment, I see Veritas’ future very bright with its best days ahead. That bright future of possibilities will become a reality only because of the people who show up day-by-day educating our children to lead lives of moral integrity, a sincere Christian ethic, and a commitment to the best academic program we can offer. When passing any of our faculty and staff in the parking lot or exchanging an email or a phone call, I encourage you to please take the time to thank them for a truly outstanding job this year. As you flip the pages of this Annual Report, you will find details about Veritas’ progress on specific strategic initiatives such as Phase II of Foundation Hall, reports about our community’s generosity to our Annual Fund and Auction, and many other significant details about life on campus. I hope you will take the time to read through this report and see the excellence with which our Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty and staff carry forward the school’s mission. Finally, we are profoundly grateful to you, our Veritas families. Your commitment to and support of the unique specifics of this “COVID” year were reflected in the students’ cooperation throughout the year. Thank you for your generous support, flexibility, commitment, and trust in our faculty and staff on behalf of everyone at Veritas. Best Regards, Brad Sewell

6 Annual Report
There were many changes entering into the 20202021 Academic Year, with alterations to our daily schedules and procedures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The shift back to on-campus and inperson learning created a different environment than what our community had ever previously experienced. However, one thing remained constant in the midst of the pandemic and that was Veritas’ commitment to the goal of Transforming Campus & Facilities which was outlined in our 2018-2023 Strategic Plan.
As the summer ensued, Phase I of the remodeling of our Auditorium began with the removal of the pews to prepare for reflooring. By replacing the existing carpeting to a more durable flooring the space was enlarge. With the goal of creating an open, flexible area for both seating and activities, Foundation Hall provides another multifunction space and enhances Veritas’ commitment to the Fine Arts.
The intention of providing additional space for other educational uses proved useful with the transition back to on-campus learning as our students and faculty utilized the space in ways unimaginable in prior years.
Foundation Hall took another drastic change as lighting in the auditorium was also upgraded. The space truly brightened up as the old stained glass windows were exchanged for clear glass, letting natural light fill the space. Modern light fixtures enhances the auditorium and provides a beautiful blend of old and new. As students came into the auditorium for the first time throughout the academic year, there were echoes of “oohs” and “aahs” as they were amazed at how drastically different the completion of Phase I had on Foundation Hall. The new auditorium was used in a plethora of ways this year. Initially, it was set up as a space for two classrooms to provide ample spacing for our students’ safety. As the need for those learning spaced changed, the auditorium began to house weekly Conservatory of Music sessions, Middle School Band, and Lower School music classes. All middle school athletes were also hosted in the space for our Athletic Awards Ceremony. In addition, Foundation Hall has been a hub for both lunches and indoor recess, when necessary, and most recently hosted the Fine Arts Week Visual Arts Gallery. The Eighth Grade production of The Sound of Music, Eighth Grade Graduation, and the End of the Year Chapel are all planned to be hosted in Foundation

Hall as parents are slowly able to return to campus. Foundation Hall Phase II is scheduled to begin in June 2021 and is anticipated to be completed in time to begin the 2021-2022 Academic Year! As Phase I focused on the floor and seating space of the Foundation Hall, Phase II will incorporate the complete remodel of the stage area. Upon its completion, Foundation Hall will be dramatically different from its previous uses and will continue to provide a wonderful area for our Fine Arts Department and other educational needs!

Under the Oaks Under the Oaks was created for the 2020-2021 Academic Year. This additional outdoor space became available by extending the fencing adjacent to Mapleridge which previously ended at Foundation Hall. Providing roughly 4,000 square feet of outdoor space, Under the Oaks became invaluable for providing ample social distancing between students and a great place for meeting outdoors. This extra space has proven to be highly useful. It was used for various purposes including outdoor dining by middle school students, an additional outdoor space for physical education classes, and as a space that provided much needed “mask breaks” throughout the day for all Veritas students. Under the Oaks serves as a great complement to The Green by providing useful and expansive outdoor learning areas.

Annual Report 11
Academic Competitions With the 2020-2021 Academic Year beginning still in the midst of a global pandemic, many schools had to adjust to account for student, faculty, and staff safety. These adjustments also affected Veritas’ typical schedule of academic competitions. Many of which opted to go fully virtual with students being filmed and unedited videos sent directly to event coordinators to prove authenticity.
Veritas had numerous students participating in all the usual student activities - Speech Meet, Math Olympics, Art Festival, Music Festival, and the Scholastic Writing Awards - and did a tremendous job in representing our school. In the 2019-2020 Academic Year, Veritas missed out competing in the Arts and Choir Festivals; however, this year students were able to participate and compete in every academic competition activity that was previously available.
Though students are still awaiting results in many student activities due to the delay and unique nature of how various activities were submitted and scored, Veritas did very well in both the Scholastic Writing competitions and Math Olympics.
Veritas students did a fabulous job with the Scholastic Writing Awards competition with two regional Silver Key entries, and four Gold Key regional entries which became automatic national qualifiers. Regional Silver Key recipients were Nicole Bakht and Olivia Nicholas. Regional Gold Key recipients were Eden Droog, Mikayla Villafuerte, and Avani Yaltho. In addition, Seventh grader Avani Yaltho not only had a Gold Key entry, but her short story, “Paper Swan,” was also an American Voices Nominee. American Voices nominations are one of five writing pieces

selected as best of show from approximately 9,000 Harris C o u n t y Department of Education regional entries. Avani’s short story also received a national Silver Medal. Eighth grader Mikayla Villafuerte had two writing entries which received regional Gold Keys. Additionally, her science fiction & fantasy entry, “Stars in the Dark,” not only received a national Gold Medal but was also chosen as one of two national works in her grade level as Best in Grade. For the ACSI Math Olympics Competition, several Veritas students from third through eighth grades placed in the top 5 of several grades and categories from schools competing as far north as Kansas and Missouri. The following outlines placements in this year’s ACSI Math Olympics: Computation • Tyler Weston (4th Place - 3rd grade) • Nathan Chiou (1st Place, Medal - 4th grade) • Samuel Shung (2nd Place - 4th grade) • Layla Yaltho (1st Place, Medal - 5th grade) • Tayla Gordon (5th Place - 5th grade) • Ian Ngo (1st Place, Medal - 7th grade) • Payton Beers (4th Place - 7th grade) • Mikayla Villafuerte (1st Place - 8th grade) • Nicole Bakht (3rd Place - 8th grade) Reasoning • John Hanna (1st Place, Medal - 3rd grade) • Maurice Zakhem (5th Place tie - 3rd grade) • Ethan Wade (1st Place, Medal - 4th grade) • Luke Bartlett (4th Place - 4th grade) • Luke Shatby (1st Place, Medal - 5th grade) • David Fremion (2nd Place tie - 5th grade) • Aaron Lin (2nd Place tie - 5th grade) • Kate Mejia (1st Place, Medal - 6th grade) • Nathan DeVries (2nd Place tie - 6th grade) • David Tsang (5th Place tie - 6th grade) • Joseph Johnson (3rd Place tie - 7th grade) • Bradley Hanna (5th Place - 7th grade) • Matthew Mejia (1st Place, Medal - 8th grade) • James Finch (4th Place - 8th grade)

Veritas Athletics After missing the Spring Sports season in the 20192020 Academic Year due to the pandemic, Veritas was able to field all sports teams for the 2020-2021 Academic Year. Even with a few extensive health and safety guidelines, students enjoyed the camraderie and competition that comes alongside interscholastic sports. With a new Athletic Director, Mrs. Amy Lloyd, the Veritas Athletics program showed tremendous grit and determination in Athletics this school year. Athletic teams featured new coaches in every team except for Track & Field and also had to navigate through various guidelines to help mitigate any disruptions that could have potentially been
caused by COVID-19. Because of these guidelines, athletic teams saw a complete season without interruptions or quarantining. Notable finishes for this year’s athletic teams include a 4th Place finish for the Varsity Girls Volleyball Team who competed against teams like St. Thomas Episcopal, Grace School, Cornerstone Christian, Logos Prep, and Holy Spirit Episcopal. The Track and Field team featured eighth graders Jonathan Jacoby and Olivia Nicholas, who broke several running and field school records. The girls finished second in the West Houston Christian Athletic Conference Championship Meet.
Cultural Expeditions Program The Cultural Expeditions Program at Veritas remains our most distinctive program in middle school. Unfortunately due to the continued limitations on travel, the majority of our CEP Trips were canceled. These cancellations included the annually anticipated London and Oxford Trip. Other domestic trips were also canceled, not necessarily due to limitations in travel, but because of various closures and/or restrictions to many of the key sites that students normally visit during their annual trips. Though this was the case, the 7th grade class was able to embark on their annual CEP Trip. This year, there was an adjustment to the trip because of various closures in Boston and travel restrictions which would require a minimum time for quarantining upon entry into Massachusetts. Instead of a typical visit to Boston, the 7th

graders were able to travel to another historically rich city - Philadelphia. Even with the adjustment in destinations, the students enjoyed an engaging and educational time during their trip. The students visited various sites and went on various tours, including the Founding Fathers Tour, the Gilded Age Tour, and an extensive walking Tour of Old Town Philadelphia. Students also visited Liberty Island, Independence Hall, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Terminal, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
