On the 12th February 2015 the president of Republic of South Africa Mr. Jacob Zuma was addressing the nation at Cape Town national parliament. EFF MP’s were removed from the chamber after asking the president when he will pay the money he used to upgrade security at his private residence, Nkandla. DA MPs also left the chamber after Mrs. Thandi Modise gave them a rude answer about the involvement of South African Police Service in removing EFF MPs from the chamber. The secret signal jammers were expected to appear at court. Other opposition parties that remained in the chamber for the rest of the address were not satisfied about the president’s speech as it lacked lots of “facts”.

But the flames did not only touch the rich areas. The shacks of Cape Flats are known to be abnormally hot, but on the 3rd of March there was nobody who reported the stories at the shacks in Cape Town on that day. It is still not known completely what happened within those areas, but the rumours are saying that many of our people in those shacks have died during this heatwave.

AMANDLA! the public for copies of our first edition.
W
am kelekile to the second edition of Vernac News, and the first edition for 2015. What a whirlwind six months it has been since the release of our very first edition last year. In all honesty, we have received an unbelievingly welcoming response from most of our fellow students and the greater UCT community. The response ranges from each extreme with some students shedding a tear at the beauty of their languages displayed so proudly in our paper and others in shame at
their lack of ability to read and write in their mother tongues. Nonetheless the staff and students excited by the sharpness in the Setswana articles, the deep isiXhosa poems and the kind of African expression shown in Vernac News, have celebrated our initative and continue to encourage us to keep going – in a nutshell, this year could not have started on a better note. And to think that we as a collective thought two thousand five hundred copies was too much, yet we still have requests from
Thus it is with great pleasure that among other exciting developments, we will be publishing three editions per semester this year beginning in March and the last one in May for the first semester and in the second semester we will publish in August and the last edition in October. We will also be introducing more languages in each edition to include isiZulu, seSotho, sePedi, seSwati, chiShona (and maybe Swahili). Additionally we will be having a new section in our newspaper titled Educational. This will feature basic phrases from selected African languages in an attempt to educate non-speakers to at least be able to communicate in one of our other official languages. Furthermore, we’ve been able to establish a fantastic Facebook following with just under five hundred likes while our recently constructed website and Instagram page have also been receiving many views. These platforms are steadily growing in membership.

Our theme for this edition is Human Rights Day, or Sharpeville Day, as it was once known and our chosen hero we will be featuring is Ntate Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe. Our newspaper firmly shares the same beliefs as this great man did. Beliefs in Pan-Africanism. It was with the perceived lack of Pan-Africanism or lack of action regarding these ideals that I formed the idea for this newspaper. And so, as a fitting tribute we at Vernac News salute you Ntate Sobukwe. You might have left us 37 years ago, but your spirit and ideas live on, your wisdom endures and breathes through platforms such as this newspaper. We still remember you. I would like to conclude with a call to action. We as Africans, are the only ones who are capable of solving the challenges and issues we face today. I therefore challenge all of you to partake in this initiative but also to create your own ones so that the change that our forefathers struggled for is quickly realised
within our lifetime. Do not be dragged down by the sceptics, naysayers and individualistic people who are deaf to the cries of our people. Before the Vernac News dream became a reality, many, including friends of mine, were sceptical about having such a platform that celebrated African languages. So much so that even though they entertained the idea, they cited many issues and challenges that they thought would outweigh any tangible progress in this matter. “It’s too complicated so I doubt you’ll be able to do it”, said one person. The Vernac News Team has persevered and the outcome is what you see here today. We have not done this for ourselves but instead for the people who are to follow behind us in this institution and those whose lives have been lost struggling for this day where we can be unashamedly or unrestrictedly proud of our languages, culture and identity as Africans. Be the next Vernac News. Be bigger and bolder. Be the next one to take South Africa and Africa forward.

A colleague of mine just brought me a copy of Vernac news, and I just wanted to warmly congratulate you on the publication. As someone working in education development, I often hear stories from students about how alienating the environment at UCT can be – and a huge part of that is the dominance of the English language. Even further, as a language activist who believes that currently marginalized languages, particularly African languages, should be legitimated in the African University intellectual space, it’s absolutely fantastic to see what you are doing. Finally, as someone who has done a lot of research on tsotsitaal, I love the inclusion of the article on page 11 (and can understand most of it!). Huge congratulations to you and the rest of the editorial team on your achievement and I hope this becomes a regular publication at UCT. Ellen

On Tuesday 24 February there was a big discussion organised by Inkulu Free Heid, about the state of our democracy. Members of parliarment from the ANC, DA, IFP and EFF as well as various student bodies were present at this vehement discussion. The different political party representatives opened the discussion with their views on the president’s State of the Nation address which took place of February 12th. The EFF representative said that the only agenda that they were trying to push across to the president was nationalization. On the other hand the DA representative says that what he found alarming was the extent to which the constitution was threatened during the proceedings of the SoNA. The intense security present, that the police force had to be in disguise as parliarment members and the signal jamming device were uncalled for according to Mike Walters. In response to this ANC representative Mmamoloko Kubayi said that the security levels on that day are justified by the fact that all of the country’s leaders were under one roof. So extensive security measures had to be taken.

In my culture, every family has their own poem, clan name and a certain animal or flower they represent. I think African children are supposed to know these things, and a lot about their cultures, so they can have a sense of belonging and direction. My culture is my life, and abandoning it would mean deserting my life’s direction.

Black people also used it when they were talking about white people. Terms like boGata (The Police), boKoos(White Afrikaaners), nnyoko/zaka/lebotha (Money), ghedlele/Transi (vehicle), Spinza/popla/wash (alcohol), tshipi/ntjeza (Gun) and bocheri/bothekini/rush (girls) were in their everyday vocabulary since these are some of the things that Tsotsis mainly live for. Lines like, “che my geld”, “hier kom boGata/bogata ba zwagala”, “Transi e kahabategile” or even “spinza se baie” ke taal ya everyday ya Manyora. Year after year there is some debacle over NSFAS. Every year students from various universities
across South Africa are faced with a predicament: strike and hope to get school funds or go home. This matter affects more than just the students of the striking universities. It affects the poor whose children have to leave school because of lack of funds, the rich-whose children are denied education when classes are cancelled during strikes, the private sector- which will fall short of skilled employees because their future workers have been financially excluded, and the government which has to settle this huge debt to universities.

Like most South Africans I wasn’t really interested in politics until I saw the EFF
getting chucked out of parliament during the SONA. Truth of the matter is that both EFF and DA believe the president should take responsibility for his actions and be accountable to the nation. These parties play a significant role in shaping South African politics. The proceedings of the SONA have certainly made more people interested in South African politics. But is that really how we want to engage our citizens in matters affecting our country? Honestly, I’m not quite sure as to where our nation is headed.

Sobukwe was an excellent orator and he established himself as an important figure amongst his fellow students after his outgoing speech as president of the SRC. It was during this time that he was influenced by the work of Anton Lembede and began embracing an Africanist position within the ANC. In 1957, Sobukwe left the ANC to become Editor of The Africanist newspaper in Johannesburg. Sobukwe, along with others, formed the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), and was elected its first President in 1959. On 21 March 1960, the PAC led a nationwide protest against the hated Pass Law which require black people to carry a pass book (Dom Pas) at all times. Sobukwe led one these protests in Orlando where he and others were subsequently arrested. In another one of these protests carried out in Sharpeville, police opened fire on a crowd of PAC supporters, killing at least 69 protestors in what is known today as the Sharpeville Massacre. Sobukwe was convicted of incitement, and sentenced to three years in prison. After serving his sentence, he was incarcerated on Robben Island. The new General Law Amendment Act was passed which allowed his imprisonment to be renewed annually at will. This procedure became known as the "Sobukwe clause" and went on for a further three years. Sobukwe was the only person imprisoned under this clause. Sobukwe was kept in solitary confinement with few privileges, in a separate area of Robben Island. Sobukwe was released in 1969 and allowed to live in Kimberley with his family but remained under extremely strict house arrest. Due to lung cancer, he was hospitalised in 1977. He died on 27 February 1978, and was buried in Graaf-Reinet on 11 March 1978.
