T

his is the song that echoed on the 9th August 1956, a day that has come to be known as national Women’s Day in South Africa. This day commemorates the great women’s march of 1956, where more than 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the countries pass laws which required those identified as ‘black’, under The Population Registration Act, to carry a pass which served to maintain population segregation, control urbanization, and manage migrant labour during the apartheid era. 59 years later, women still suffer oppression of economic, social and political nature. The struggle has not yet been overcome. The struggle varies to differing degrees for women of different races, socio economic class and sexuality. The black female oppression is the worst of any sort and at every corner of this earth, the black woman is on her own. For those who spent time at Azania 1(at Bremner Building) intersectionality was well discussed and the concept is quite crucial in understanding the complexities of our identity and struggle as women and call us to a more diverse approach in tackling our oppression. It forces us, women and men, to search deeper into ourselves and into the archives to learn our real history for why and how we have arrived at this point in 2015, where poverty, disease, illiteracy and unemployment still have a black female face. It is women in rural areas and on farms who are the most marginalized group in our South African society. We don’t need to search hard for

evidence of this. In this month that we celebrate women, we also mourn the anniversary of the Marikana massacre of 16 August 2012 where 34 miners (78 wounded) where shot down by South African security forces. We hear of the brave men who, were shot in the back far from police lines, gave their lives seeking a living wage. Their deaths in vein as the conditions of those they left behind have not improved. And those on who the police acted on behalf of, Lomnin’s shareholders and political elite, remain unscathed and richer. We don’t hear of the women of Marikana whose story is continuously ignored. Their existence made invisible. Their pain and suffering suppressed, and if history is anything to go by, they will be remembered by no one. If we are true to the struggle for the emancipation of all women, we must seek each of their stories and understand their experience of their oppression. This is where intersectionality provides as with the tools to begin unpacking, and tackling the beast of white supremacist, capitalist, heteronormative, cisgender, patriarchy. The struggle for women’s liberation is not for white, straight, able bodied, thin women to be free. It is also for the black, disabled, Trans, non-Christian, woman to be free. We must understand the privileges and oppressions of all when we come together to fight. This month should be used for conscientising men and women. Our actions in the name of women’s month need to reach farther than they have before. We need a reawakening of the black man and woman in this country. As women, we need to tell our stories, reimagine our country and lead the struggle from the forefront. The struggle of the women of Marikana, who have formed Sikhala Sonke, is a struggle we all need to take up. For too long women have been suffering in silos. We must allow for women to tell their stories. This month Vernac has decided to feature the women of team Vernac each with a story to tell. Hoping that we can begin a conversation that is missing in our community. UCT lacks platforms where we can express ourselves and

act collectively. To all women on campus, we want to hear your story, tell us about your struggles. Vernac is a platform that silences no one and hopes to connect us, to unify us in our differences as black men and women.

Let’s face it, it’s not really Serena’s image that makes the rest of the world so uncomfortable, is it? If that is the case then why haven’t female athletes like Martina Navratilova or Justine Henin been placed under scrutiny? First and foremost, let me say halala to women who fought for the struggle in 1956. Their efforts and contribution to a democratic country are well respected and recognized! In my opinion, Nkandla topic has been exhausted. It is clear from the defense that the ruling party is placing, Jacob Zuma is ‘guilty’ and needs to pay back the money. It is unfortunate for the tax payers because there is no money that will be paid if the ‘investigation’ to ‘confirm’ if Madonsela’s recommendations are valid is still going to be ANC ‘veterans’. They will not recommend that he pays the money back because their salaries and promotion are heavily dependent on what they say. Mental Health in the African community is accompanied by dangerous stereotyping that often leads to the stigmatisation of people suffering from the different illnesses such as stress, depression , schizophrenia and many more. Diseases such as depression have been labelled ‘white things’ in our community which has led to high suicide rates because people are unable to receive the treatment they need. It has been found that women suffer the most in this regard because they are expected to bear the brunt of poverty, violence , discrimination and abuse yet they are not offered proper coping mechanisms. It is time for governments to play a more active role in order to make mental health care a part of primary health care services.

Every year children are taken to initiation schools to be taught manhood, and to be traditionally circumcised. The horrid problem comes when countless deaths result from those initiation schools. Some on the initiates lose their genitals as a result of malpractice of inexperienced traditional surgeons or nurses. The initiates end up committing suicide as they see no point of living. The conundrum now is that there are too many illegal initiation schools, which makes the problem worse. We love our culture and customs as Africans, but the problem comes when culture is practised at an expense of young lives.

Circumcision is a critical part of grooming men, especially traditional circumcisions, where they are taught to be responsible men who respect women. Circumcision also reduces the risk of men contracting STIs. The problem comes with unauthorised traditional circumcision, where the leaders are inexperienced and thus resulting in the deaths of the initiates. The best option is to go to clinics or hospitals to get circumcised, which is a safer option and does not pose too much of a health risk to men wishing to be circumcised.

Women Who Fezeka Mehlomakhulu is a BA Law and International Relations student as well as a prominent debater for the University of Cape Town Debating league. Three years ago if you had referred to me as a woman, I would have given you hell. I hated being called a woman. I associated womanhood with weakness, inferiority, lacking independence, living according to people’s expectations of what women should be or shouldn’t be. Expectations on what women should wear, how they should talk, how they should carry themselves. This was just too much. I didn’t want to live according to people’s expectations... No! I just wanted to be me. And it is only recently, having rejected this ideology, that I realize that being a woman means that I have the autonomy and freedom to be MY kind of woman. A woman who loves, who is fearless, attracted to challenges, an emotional being and all sorts of other things, not what the society prescribes. I now embrace being called a woman. aturday, 08 August 2015, just outside the Liesbeeck main gate, a girl screamed so loud that the whole of Liesbeeck Gardens had to come out of their flats to see what the matter was. She was robbed in front of Off-Campus Protection Services. As the girl was getting robbed just two meters away from the gate, some of the students watched the scene from their balconies and did nothing, so did the G4S officers who were on duty that night. Witnesses have reported that the gate was only opened for her after her perpetrators had left, despite her attempts of calling out for help. The Liesbeeck Acting Warden, Mr G. Nodoba maintains that the woman was outside Liesbeeck gardens premises and therefore that the CPS officers did not do anything about this incident as it was outside of their jurisdiction. However, the victim is a Liesbeeck resident and she was walking back to res by the time of the incident. The warden had this in response, “There was no way in which anyone could have known that the victim is an LBG resident. In addition, our CPS colleagues are stationed to work within the precincts

While this is the case with the management of the residence, one of the concerned students has expressed his feelings regarding the incident. He was quoted saying, “Yes we understand that campus security doesn’t carry lethal weapons and that their job is to only keep everyone calm and call for backup, but the university spends a lot of money on G4S and so we cannot have security personnel that can’t even protect themselves. How will they protect the next person then?”. If off campus security says it cannot take responsibility over something that is outside their boundary of work, can that not be considered as an immoral behaviour? Women’s month or not, women continue to be vulnerable bodies. This woman was confronted by men who have undermined her as a woman by making her excising their power over her, knowing she is a helpless being. She has also been let down by men who stood and watched her getting robbed.

You can never talk about Banyana Banyana without mentioning. Portia Modise. She significantly dominated African football for a very long time, 15 years to be exact. She started playing soccer at an early age on the streets of Soweto with boys whilst most girls if not all played netball. She apparently was even better than some male players. She played with flair and did the Shibobos, Tsamayas, show me your number and this resulted with the guys giving her the nickname “Bashin”, named after the former Orlando Pirates Midfielder Bashin Mahlangu. Despite the lack of funding in South African Ladies soccer which resulted in her not being able to do trials with Arsenal Ladies and the harassment she faced over the years due to her being homosexual, portia became a Legend of South African football. She retired this year, 2015, having scored over 100 goals for Banyana. She was and will forever be a Football Goddess and we will forever talk about her. Salute!
