Letter from The Editor
Be Kind Right now around the world things can seem very frightening and overwhelming. With so many uncertainties about current events and the future we can often be left wondering where to turn or what is next? While I don’t know the answers to any of these questions, I do know one thing. Dear Readers of Simply Bowie. We will all get through this together. We have the power of kindness. Although we may be apart, now is the perfect time to pick up the phone and call a friend. Sit down at your computer and send an email to a relative you haven’t had the chance to catch up with in a while. When we are frightened or confused, we can become angry and upset. To counter this, tell your family that you love them and how proud you are of them. Putting kindness out into the world can make all the difference. Let your light shine.
Sending light and love, Bowie.

DESIGN | BUILD Taking Time To Care For Homeowners President Dave Lunden shares his expertise on picking the right lot for the home you want as well as options for whole home renovations.

hen it comes to building your own home or fully renovating your current home, the decisions can seem daunting. This is why you need to contact Timberlake Design | Build first to guide you through the process.
It is important to note that when building a home, you need to have the right lot for what you need. With the On Your Lot Program, Timberlake Design | Build will help you find it. “Prince George’s County has a great supply of available land unlike other areas that are strained with development or have astronomical fees.” Dave says, “[Clients] just need someone to help them find it. Not every lot is a buildable lot, but if you are interested in building a new house one of the things that we can help you with is finding that land and a place to build.”
Timberlake Design | Build has been operating in Prince George’s County for over 55 years. It is a family-owned business under its parent company, Timberlake Homes. “We understand the market, the approval process, and we have connections with the county. We are always going to do the right thing,” Dave says.
This starts with contacting the company and telling them what you need. Dave Lunden tells us, “There are a variety of ways to go. We are going to try and find a lot that is suitable for the client. No two pieces of land are the same. When someone comes to us, we begin identifying a piece of land whether it is through

a realtor, a developer or a contact who is trying to sell land. Part of this process is that we are going to walk the lot with the client and point out any challenges the land may have. Then, we will work up a budget for that client.” Not only does Timberlake Design | Build walk with you every step of the way, they have the resources and equipment to get the jobs done. “We have a deep bench to draw from. We do subdivision work, we have experts who have the skills and knowledge to build roads, put in utilities, and get the land approved. Our in-house people are looking at it as we go through this process in order to save the homeowner money and to give us a better product.” From finding the right lot to choosing your home, they have your best interests in mind. “Now once we identify the type of land,
people will choose from one of our house designs. We will connect with our engineers and we get our homeowners set up with a lender that will approve a construction loan or any other type of loan that is needed,” Dave says, “If you have land that you are looking to sell you can approach Timberlake Design | Build to get a buyer lined up to place a house on the land. “We work with realtors and/or property owners who have a land piece they want to sell. We try to help them market it with a house package. If we sell it this way, we can give them pricing for the house and all of the options. Buyers and potential homeowners can see one of the spec homes or model homes and walk through it to see if they actually like it rather than just looking online.” If you are not looking to build a new home or you want to stay close to Bowie, but do not have the right lot
April 2020
Timberlake Design | Build also offers whole house renovations. Dave says, “One of the challenges for people is to find the land exactly where they want to live. If they love the neighborhood they currently own a home in, we can do a whole house renovation to customize it the way they want it.”
The goal for Timberlake Design | Build is to take care of its customers and to truly give them what they need. ”People come to us with a budget, and a lot of the work is spending the time with them to find out what is just a wish-list and what is a must have. You have to investigate to discover true must haves, then prioritize
the wants and needs in a home. It is part of the process to spend a lot of time with people to deliver as best as we can. We are a family-owned business with everyone living in Maryland. We care about integrity, taking care our customers, our veterans, and our county. Prince George’s County is our heritage.”

D
erric Thomas is an entrepreneur and an advocate in his community. Through his career as a Maryland attorney practicing business and corporate law; and through his time as the founder and owner of the beloved Half Note Restaurant & Lounge. Born and raised in Washington D.C., he moved to Tacoma Park, Maryland when he was a teenager. “I have been living in Prince George’s County for the last 30 + years. I am much like the entrepreneurs that I represent. My first foray into the restaurant, lounge, and club business was opening Bay Street in 1992 In Prince George’s County. That gave me the initial exposure into the business. Then, I went on to law school,” Derric said, “I graduated from Howard University Law School. I decided in 2007 that I wanted to build a restaurant and lounge in the community that I live in, to serve customers like me.” The Half Note Restaurant & Lounge came to fruition in 2008 because Derric wanted to open a venue for the community to enjoy. “I wanted to build a place that I would love to come into – a safe environment, good food, good parking, and entertainment. I wanted to build a place that the community needed,” he said. Recently, the decision has been made to close the original Half Note Lounge location and move to a
22
different area. Many loyal customers and patrons are concerned that Derric was forced to move, but this was a decision he made on his own. Derric says, “The Half Note brand will live on. I am taking on a partner to successfully run the brand in a new location. Although, the shopping center was purchased with the intentions of creating a megachurch, I decided with a year remaining on my lease that it was time for me to move on to something different. I don’t want people to be mad at this church. It really was my decision to move on to a new chapter.” A new location for the Half Note Lounge has been identified and all of Half Notes’ employees will be guaranteed a position at the new location. This is a very positive move and everyone will have job security even though they are moving. The new venue will host the same type of food and entertainment while carrying on the Half Note Lounge name. Throughout this transition, Derric will have a background role to guarantee that everything runs smoothly so the community can have the venue that it knows and loves. “One of my goals for 2020 is to follow through and make this a successful transition in a new location. I want to ensure that the vision remains as it is.”
April 2020
What’s Next For Derric Thomas in 2020? “I will be practicing law and helping people fulfill their dreams of becoming entrepreneurs. I will also be focusing on my foundation called The Talented Tenth Foundation helping young black men get into colleges and universities through SAT Prep. I believe that everyone who wants to go to college should be able to. I am interested in affecting positive change in this community. I believe it is truly important to be an involved member of your community and we have a responsibility to give back.”

Here’s To Health What Should You Be Doing During Flu Season? It can often feel like we are under the weather for months during cold and flu season. Here are some ways to stop the spread and stay well.
Back to back illnesses can be physically and mentally draining. It may feel like you are sick from November to May. Why is that? Cold weather does not make you sick, but flourishing germs do. In fact you are more likely to catch
24
a cold inside a heated building, than outside in the weather. That’s because it’s the germs that are causing you to get sick in the winter, not the weather itself. The common cold is caused by a number of different viruses, which are more active in the spring and fall; and the flu is caused by various strains
of the influenza virus, which are more active in the winter. You may start off with a cold in the fall, then catch the flu or other virus a few weeks later just to have your allergies wake up with the first blooms of spring. If this is the case, what can we do to keep our selves healthy?
April 2020
Wash, Wash, Wash Your Hands
The first and most important way to help avoid influenza, coronavirus, or other viruses is to practice basic hygiene. While most people realize that hand washing and coughing into the crook of your arm helps stop the spread of germs, it goes a step further than that. Hands should be washed with soap and warm water for a minimum of 20 seconds. Experts recommend singing two rounds of “Happy Birthday” or the “ABC’s” to ensure that you are scrubbing for long enough. Also, be sure to scrub your palms, backs of your hands, in between fingers, under fingernails, thumbs and wrists. This is the best way to minimize the speak of germs. If you do sneeze, cough, or blow your nose make sure your wash your hands thoroughly. If you don’t have access to soap and water, use
hand sanitizier with at least 60% alcohol content.
Power Boost Your Immune System
Even when you are feeling sick, it is important to keep eating a healthy balanced diet to boost your immune system and help you fight off germs. Most people turn to vitamin C after they’ve caught a cold. That’s because it helps build up your immune system. Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells. These are key to fighting infections. Popular citrus fruits include grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes, and clementines. Because your body doesn’t produce or store it, you need daily vitamin C for continued health. Almost all citrus fruits are high in vitamin C. With such a variety to choose from, it’s easy to
add a squeeze of this vitamin to any meal. Broccoli and spinach are also packed full of vitamins and antioxidants to keep you feeling your best!
Practice Social Distancing & Stay Home To Rest
As much fun as it is go out to the movies, and other large events, sometimes the best practice is spend time one-on-one or stay out of public spaces. During flu season especially be mindful of high traffic areas and frequently touched surfaces. Large crowds can often carry the potential for spreading germs. If you are feeling at all unwell, it is best to stay home and rest. Viruses spread very quickly through droplets of saliva and mucus. They can also live on surfaces so be sure to sanitize frequently touched items such as door knobs and light switches. These are just a few helpful tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to your community. 25

It’s a Beautiful Day For Golf Spring is upon us, it’s time to learn about the history of the top golf courses in the area.
With beautiful spring weather upon us it is important to get outside and stay active. Golfing is one of the most popular spring sports. Here in and around Bowie, we are lucky to have such amazing courses. Read on to learn more about their interesting histories.
The Country Club at Woodmoore 12320 Pleasant Prospect in Mitchellville 301-249-6100 CCWoodmore.com The Country Club at Woodmore began its storied history in 1923 as Beaver Dam Golf and Country Club course on Landover Road. It was one of over 200 courses designed by Donald Ross, the noted golf architect. The course opened for play on August 16, 1923 as a par 72, 6,775-yard layout from the blue tees. In 1941 the club was bought and re-named Prince George’s Country Club. “Old P.G.,” as it was known to many members and friends, was host to a number of championship events,

including the National Capital Open in 1947 and 1948. Lloyd Mangrum won this event in 1947, and Skip Alexander won it in 1948. The U.S. Women’s Open Championship, also hosted by Old P.G., and was won by Louise Suggs in 1949 when she defeated Babe Didrikson; both of whom are founding members of the LPGA. In 1979, the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission purchased the golf course and its facilities for use as a recreational area for the county. The club then moved to its current location at the corner of Enterprise and Woodmore Roads in Mitchellville, Maryland. The new
course, designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, for the new Prince George’s Country Club opened for play in 1981, as a par 72, 7,059-yard course from the championship tees. At its current location, it has hosted championship events such as the Maryland State Open in 1992, which was won by amateur and then Club member Del Ponchock in a playoff over Glen Barrett and the Club’s head golf professional at that time, Larry Ringer. Numerous other prestigious events have been played on the course, such as the Women’s Eastern Open, the U.S. Amateur Qualifier, the Maryland Women’s Amateur, and the Kemper Open Qualifier on a number of occasions. In February of 1993, the Club changed its name to “The Country Club at Woodmore” to align itself more with the growth of the community surrounding the course.

the 1700’s this land was a 600-acre horse farm called “Peachtree Estates”. Over the next 100 years, into the 1800’s, family and relatives split up the land and sold the vast majority into farms. In the late 1800’s approximately 175-acres was owned by the Maenner Family who farmed the land. Many of their son’s and daughters were born in the masonry farmhouse built in 1727 and is listed on the Historic Roles within the State. Around 1957, 134-acres was sold to Doug Smiley and his group of investors. They proceeded to develop a golf course on this land and in 1959 opened the course
called “Belair Golf & Country Club”. In 1974, United Investors Inc. purchased the course for a real estate investment. They made little improvements to the course itself, but did make changes, to the Historic House by adding two additions for a pro shop and a snack bar. In July 1981 the City of Bowie was looking for an outside group to lease the Belair Golf & Country Club and make major improvements to the facility. After all the proposals were submitted and evaluated, the present corporation and management have been in place since October 1, 1981. The name was changed to Bowie Golf & Country Club in 1982.

Great Tips for A Clean Home
The time for Spring Cleaning is upon is! Here are a few great tips to add to your cleaning routine:
Always Clean From Top to Bottom – When you start cleaning from the top of the room, whether it is the fan or the highest shelves or cabinets you are doing yourself a favor. The dust will fall to the floor where you can pick it up with a vacuum rather than having to continuously redo the floors while cleaning.
28
1
Dust Your Ceiling Fan With A Pillow Case – While you are up there cleaning the tops of cabinets or shelves, you do not want to forget your ceiling fan. Keeping your fan clean can be an annoyance, but it a clean fan helps minimize the spread of dust and grime around the room. I When you keep your fan dustfree, it can also help with indoor allergies. One of the best tips we’ve read is to use a pillowcase to dust! Place the pillowcase all the way over the blades of the fan and then pull towards you. Most of the dust should fall directly into the pillowcase leaving you less to clean up on the floor.
2
Remove Stains With the Power of The Sun – Harsh chemicals can be so abrasive and sometimes they aren’t even strong enough to clear the toughest of stains. For example, on your reusable plastic containers food like tomato sauce can often leave behind a colored stain. Place in the sun to lighten the discoloration. This also works especially well with stained baby and kid clothes. Once they are washed, set them out to dry in the sun. Like magic the stains will disappear.

Remove Pet Hair From Furniture with a Glove – We all love our fur babies, but some shed much more than others. A strong pet vac can help keep up with the hair on the ground, but swipe a damp rubber glove across your sofa and you will be pleasantly surprised to see the hair come up easily. It is a quick and easy fix.
Don’t Forget Your Magic Eraser – When I was in high school, I had fresh white adidas shoes. I did my best to keep them absolutely flawless, but it was hard because I wore them to school every day. My mom supplied me with magic erasers to help keep my shoes clean and fresh. Today, I still use my magic erasers for most household cleaning projects especially when scrubbing the bathtub.

Keep Your Laundry Smelling Fresh – Clothes that had been left in the laundry bin or in the washer may develop a mildew odor. The easiest way to keep them fresh is to throw in a cup of white vinegar when you wash or rewash to neutralize the smells. You can then run the load one more time with detergent to ensure a fresh-smelling load of wash.
