How to speak Love again in a Relationship

You Can Totally Fall Back In Love With Your Partner—Here’s How

A sad, universal truth: Every relationship will hit a point when the fiery excitement of “the beginning” fades and things feel a little...well, boring. Your brain and body simply can’t sustain the adrenaline-fueled butterfly feeling for years and years (and it’s a lot less sad when you accept that). But losing the luster doesn’t mean you’re destined for misery— you can (CAN) fall back in love again.

Think about it: When two people first get together, they put a lot of effort and energy into making their partner happy and their twosome flourish. But as time passes and you get more comfortable with each other, it’s easy to become passive.

“Plan something unexpected, like doing one of their chores or making them a nice lunch,” he says. Doing so reminds your brain that this person is important to you—and seeing their “Aww, thanks babe” reaction will likely make you feel all giddy again.

2. Spend time away from each other.

It sounds counterintuitive, but sometimes when things get a little moldy, you need some separation to rekindle the spark. I don’t mean jet-setting across the country for a month—but giving yourself the time and space to be your own person. “When two people feel their relationship has gone stale, it may feel to them as if they’ve grown apart,” says Stephen Snyder, MD, a sex and relationship therapist and author of Love Worth Making. “But very often the problem is that they’ve failed to grow as individuals, apart from one another.”

Your fix: Pursue a hobby that your person has no interest in, like a cooking class or hot yoga. “This gives your partner a chance to truly see you as the ‘other,’” says Dr. Snyder, which can help them see you with fresh eyes.

3. Ask yourself what they need.

That means, then, that falling in love—or back in it—is an intentional act. And while no one half of a duo can make things perfect, you can definitely do your part to refresh your relationship when things go meh.

Here’s exactly what to do to fall in love again:

1. Do something to make your partner’s life better. Since you’re the one reading this article, you may be looking for ways to feel closer to your S.O. rather than doing things for someone whom you feel a little detached from. But, stay with me: Since “love” is a verb, “when you lead with action, your heart tends to follow,” says Seth J. Gillihan, PhD, a psychologist in Philadelphia.

Sometimes when you feel disconnected from your partner, the issue isn’t a lack of passion but rather a presence of resentment. That comes from a place of you feeling like a victim and them, a perpetrator.

So take a minute to assess what they’re going through and what their particular needs may be (in the moment, and in general), says Gillihan. Are they hungry? Exhausted? Do they need to be embraced?

These questions may be especially effective to ask yourself during an argument, which tend to happen more when you’ve hit the relationship doldrums. “Then see if there’s anything you can do to meet that need,” Gillihan says.

18 | February 2023
“Relationships grow stale generally because the couple avoids confronting the issue.”
—says Franklin Porter, PhD, a psychotherapist in New York.

Just like doing something nice for them, responding to their needs can help them feel closer to you—in turn, making you feel closer to them and helping you fall in love again.

Note: If this exercise is a real struggle for you—perhaps because of longstanding fights or issues—it might be a good idea to see a couples therapist, who can help you work through your needs together.

4. Spend more present time with them. Even if you live with your boyfriend (or husband, or girlfriend/wife), chances are, a lot of the time you spend with them is occupied by other things—emails, kids, TV, phone calls, etc.

But disconnecting from the world around you to truly be with your partner can help you feel the feels again, because it reminds you that, above all else, you two are a team (not two people who connected for no real reason).

One half of this equation is leaving work at work and setting your phone down to spend quality time with your person, Porter says. The other half is a skill you may have forgotten about as your relationship took on a long-term status: listening.

“Spend some time talking together in a different way,” says Snyder. “One talks, the other just listens. As the listener, see if you can stop yourself as much as possible from merely formulating your own responses. Instead, just listen.”

It may feel a little strange at first to be so intentional about your daily conversations, but that means you’re doing it right, says Snyder. Everyone wants to be heard. And “that strangeness is where all the good stuff happens.”

5. Have silly time together.

Speaking of strangeness, it’s super important for people to be able to shoot the sh*t with each other and just kick back and have a goofy grand time. In fact, research shows that couples who laugh together often have happier relationships and stay together for the long haul.

Try to check yourself when you get annoyed with your other half—did they really do something that bugs you, or can you

just laugh it off? And poke fun (in a kind, loving way, obvi) at both them and yourself, in order to keep things light. Just like you did during the early days.

6. Stop and notice your S.O.

When you’re dealing with the daily grind, it’s easy to check out and glaze over the person next to you. Sure, you see them every day, but are you really seeing them? Paying more attention to who they are and what they do can help you fall back in love.

“Noticing your partner, complimenting his or her appearance, or making random gestures of appreciation, will make the other feel more attractiveand desirable, and likely increase desire,” says Porter. In other words, bring back some of the flirty texts and extra-long stares you shared when you were first dating, and they’ll likely do the same.

7. Take turns planning surprise date nights. Sometimes all it takes to help you reconnect is scheduling a date night—no kids, no friends, just the two of you. To make it more fun, Porter suggests taking turns planning the evenings and keeping the details under wraps.

“Agree that you’ll both be totally open to the other’s idea of a date for the evening,” says Porter. That way, you each get to take part in the surprise and get excited about planning something special—and you both get the opp to do something you actually want to do.

8. List the ways your partner has made your life better. Relationships are sort of like ice cream: They’re addictive and delicious in the beginning, but eventually, they lose their appeal. That’s because when you get used to something good, you tend to take it for granted.

So to fight that, “spend 15 minutes writing down all the ways in which your life has been changed for the better by this person,” Gillihan suggests. “Include little things, like ‘He did the dishes last night,’ as well as bigger ones, like ‘She taught me that I’m unconditionally lovable.’”

Reminding yourself of every asset your partner has added to your life will make you appreciate all the time you’ve had together and feel newly excited about all the good times that are still to come.

If that doesn’t give you the heart-eyes emoji feels, you may want to consider that visit to the therapist’s couch...

EXCELLENCE ON PURPOSE

Excellence on Purpose is more than a personal training service - it’s an invitation to change your life for the better. Having been a personal trainer for 20 years, owner Manny Rothmiller is no stranger to what it takes to become fit, but his business expands well beyond that. With the help of numerous health and wellness professionals such as trainers, researches, and nutritionists, he has cultivated a philosophy to help those in the community and beyond achieve their goals - on purpose.

Balancing family on two opposite sides of the fitness spectrum, Rothmiller knew from an early age that he was interested in being fit. He chose to study pre-med in undergrad, taking classes in anatomy, physiology, and nutrition to gain a better understanding of how the body works. After being injured in the military, through rehabilitation he gained a deeper

passion for exercise and wellness. Through the combination of these aspects of his life, Excellence on Purpose was born.

Excellence on Purpose, Rothmiller’s philosophy, came into existence in 2009, with it’s incorporation as a business in 2011. “Excellence on Purpose as a lifestyle is to get people to focus on being the best versions of itself with processes,” he said. It involves taking a holistic look at things besides solely diet and exercise while having one look at specific goals and working from there. From there, there is an emphasis on tracking and managing habits to lead one to these goals - therefore achieving them on purpose. Their main audience are people who are simply interested in being the best versions of themselves. “Excellence on purpose is about identity. It’s about, you know, understanding who and what you need to be,

22 | February 2023

and then working as hard as you possibly can to become that” he said.

“I come across a lot of people that do affirmations and they have inspiring vision boards, but they don’t have scoreboards”, he said. “They come they show me their, their vision board and I say, what’s your scoreboard? How do you keep track of what you’re doing? How do you know?” More than anything, Excellence on Purpose is a philosophy that’s main focus is on measurable goals that will get one to where they aspire to be - instead of making empty promises to oneself.

What makes Rothmiller’s business different, is that he is in the unique place of having been on the other side of the very issues that they focus on, whether that be physical or mental. He also comes from a place of understanding the need for fitness in the community. “If you look at the statistics, they say four out of

five women of color are overweight. And you know, women of color are the center of our community,” he said. Seeing this overall need is what keep Excellence on Purpose going.

The 2020 pandemic began it’s current phase, which is lifestyle and personal training. One begins with a free consultation, where both a questionnaire and a movement assessment is given. Along with this, new customers receive a free workout so they can meet them where they are. After this, there are different program options such as one-on-one training, small group, and bootcamp. Along with physical fitness, there is also an emphasis on other aspects of help, with offerings of lifestyle and nutrition coaching. Excellence on Purpose has also recently partered with a genetics company, through which customers can find out how their DNA plays a role in their health, wellness, but moreso their overall life.

Healthcare

Innovation is a familiar concept for Golden Days Healthcare. Located in Bowie, they have been in operation for 5 years now, with Shavonne M. Gumbs, CRNP at its helm. With over ten years in the healthcare industry, she has made great strides in modernizing the concept of primary and express medical care.

At a glance, Golden Days Healthcare may seem like the typical primary care provider, but for many reasons, this is far from the truth. While primary care is their main focus, they also provide acute care as well as walk-in visits. Their goal is to “provide quality, affordable and accessible health care,” said Gumbs. While they accept most major insurance, as well as Medicare and Medicaid, they also offer out of pocket pricing for patients that may not have insurance.

Gumbs also values the relationships she and her business have been able to build with their patients. What sets them apart from other healthcare providers is “the repore that we do develop with patients”, Gumbs said. During the COVID pandemic,

she has gained many patients that were looking to be tested or vaccinated, but ended up then going to primary care as well.

What some may not know, is that Golden Days Healthcare has expanded their business to now include Golden Days IV Hydration. This arm of the business offers IV therapies as well as vitamin injections thats effectiveness is multiplied by being directly delivered to the bloodstream intravenously. According to their website, “IV hydration works by delivering the hydration and essential nutrients your body craves directly into your bloodstream. Bypassing the digestive system means you’ll feel the effect of the fluids, electrolytes and vitamins more quickly and benefit from 100% absorption.”

26 | February 2023

Golden Days IV Hydration offers eight different services, fit to different needs and concerns, and packages are split into 3 tiers. Desired effects combat issues such as inflammation, bloating, seasonal allergies, and fatigue. While IV therapy can assist with overall health, they also have aesthetic results, such as anti-aging and other skincare benefits. “Something I always think of is if you look good, you feel good”, Gumbs said. Treatments start at $175, and will only take 30-45 minutes.

With these developments, it’s important to note that this is not the only way that Golden Days Healthcare promotes wellness in its businesses. There is also focus on treating patient holistically. Gumbs believes in not just looking at symptoms, but also external factors affecting health such as the environment, economics, and family. “It’s moreso taking the whole patient versus just whatever sickness or illness that they’re dealing with it” Gumbs said.

In the new year, it is very common to see a plethora of health goals, whether it’s going to the gym consistently, or committing to a better diet If that sounds familiar, Golden Days Healthcare has the resources to help. Along with Golden Days IV Hydration, they also connect patients with nutritional support, dieticians, and other weight loss resources.

27 | February 2023 Primary Care: www.goldendayshealthcare.com (301) 503-1490 IV Hydration: www.goldenivhydration.com (301) 503-1490 If one is interested in becoming a patient at Golden Days Healthcare, their website offers online appointment scheduling, as well as phone booking. For Golden Days IV Hydration, the website offers more information on the process and pricing as well as online booking.

The exquisite, entrepreneurial and creative spirit behind Basket Treats by Alexis Streets™ , The Dessert Junkie™, in Bowie. Her original Basket Treats location in Laurel, Maryland will still serve as a dessert shop with novelty gifts, sweet chocolate-dipped treats, cupcakes, ice cream and milkshakes. We first featured Alexis in February 2021 to learn all about her dessert empire.

Alexis had expanded her business to include The Dessert Junkie™ in 2017. Alexis knew that she wanted to bring jobs to the community and continue putting a smile on people’s faces through her delicious desserts. The Dessert Junkie™ Mobile Dessert Truck currently brings treats to Prince George’s County and the surrounding areas. Alexis felt called to open another location The Dessert Junkie™ bakery so that they could begin doing all of their baking on-site and offering more gourmet desserts. She knew that she needed to find the perfect location. The Dessert Junkie™ bakery location is off 450 in Bowie. It is a fullservice bakery with a state-of-the-art kitchen. There will be baked goods made fresh daily, new products including vegan, glutenfree, and sugar-free items. Also included in the menu are the famous monster milkshakes, funnel cakes, donuts, gourmet coffee, and gourmet ice cream. Alexis’ vision doesn’t just include catering, gourmet cupcakes, wedding cakes, monster milkshakes, dessert cups, chocolate covered strawberries, and other mouthwatering desserts. “I just want to be able to provide jobs for the community. I want to be able to keep moving. I am a self-motivator and I believe in creating your own way. A lot of people would sit there and wait for an opportunity to job out at them, but for me personally, I try to grab the bull by the horns and do everything imaginable to make it work. It is very important for me to get the bakery running and put the right people in place so that I can move onto my next project,” Alexis says

Alexis is extremely proud of the work that she and her team have put in over the last year. “While most people’s businesses have been failing and floundering over the last year we have been expanding. We are always helping one another genuinely. You have to pour into other people.”

Taking Care of Your Heart

Cardiac Arrest

33 | February 2023

Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes – or it may go away and then return. You need to know the following signs.

1. Uncomfortable pressure, Squeezing, Fullness pain. An elephant standing on your chest

2. Discomfort in one or both arms, usually down the left arm

3. Pain in the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

4. Shortness of breath, trouble breathing,

5. Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Every person is different, some may have one symptom and others may have all. In some cases there maybe no warning. Please do not ignore the signs.

CPR Training

Lets talk about Saving Lives. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) are an absolute must have trainings. Everyone can play a part in SAVING a persons’ life. Starting CPR compressions within a few minutes of a person going into cardiac arrest (heart stops) can possibly restore a normal heart rhythm. The goal of CPR is to keep oxygen flowing in and out of the lungs and to keep oxygenated blood flowing through the body. It is important to know the signs and symptoms of the major cause of cardiac arrest which is a Heart Attack.

Stress Free CPR Training is owned and operated by Renee Patterson. A well-trusted experienced CPR/ AED and first aid instructor trainer here in Prince George’s County, Maryland. She began her path of life saving training as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician in Maryland over 30 years ago. Renee educates citizens on basic lifesaving skills and matters of the heart. She works in many disciplines of public safety and education. Stress Free CPR training was derived from Renee’s love of educating people in the community. Stress Free CPR Training teaches healthcare providers, childcare centers, security companies, new parents, churches and has plenty time to teach you. Renee received her training from American Heart Association, Health Safety Institute, American Red Cross and the National Safety Council. She has studied the different theories and innovative methods of training with some of the area’s colleges and training academies.

Stress Free CPR will show you how to “Save a Life” through CPR in a relaxed and no stress environment. Her goal is to teach potential students how to recognize and respond to a person choking, having a heart attack and much more. CPR is already a high anxiety stressful situation. Renee believes if you learn in a relaxed environment, you will retain what you learned. Her goal is for our students to feel confident in their ability to helping a victim. Everyone has an important role and responsibility to helping others in a life-saving situation.

The 6 links in the adult out-of-hospital Chain of Survival

• Recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system (calling 9-1-1)

• Early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions

• Rapid defibrillation - AED

• Advanced resuscitation by Emergency Medical Services/Fire Department

• Post-cardiac arrest care in the hospital

• Recovery (including additional treatment, observation, rehabilitation)

A strong Chain of Survival can improve chances of survival and recovery for victims of cardiac arrest. CPR is a Life SAVING skill that anyone can learn.

Stress Free CPR Training offers extremely flexible blended online and in-person training that will help prepare individuals to respond to sudden cardiac arrest and choking incidents. We also train new instructors to build their own CPR business. There CPR and AED courses conforms to the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines.

If you are interested in learning this Life Saving skill, do not hesitate to contact us for training. If you are also interested in joining our team as an instructor, we would love to have you.

The actual chain of survival rate is about 12% for cardiac arrests that occur outside the hospital and between 24% and 40% for those that happen in the hospital. This is according to the Emergency Medical Journal. August 2022

If you were watching the football game last month with Bengals and Bills.

You saw 24yr old Damar Hamlin collapse from cardiac arrest. His heart stopped. The medical team preformed CPR and used the AED to restore his heartbeat right there on the field. He was then rushed to the hospital. Look at him now.
