I am an illustrator born and raised in Bratislava, Slovakia, currently based in England. I studied illustration at University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey. Mainly inspired by the aesthetic of the 20th century and the surreal of the everyday, I create character-focused imagery, often turning it into risograph prints. Apart from illustrating, I enjoy exploring new places, collecting tickets and taking care of my large rare plant collection.

PUBLICATIONS

FROTH ON THE DAYDREAM ‘Froth on the Daydream’ is an illustration project inspired by Boris Vian’s 1947 novel with the same title. I created a city guide of Vian’s surreal Paris, including places from the novel. I gathered observational images on a visit to Paris, which formed the basis for my final illustrations.

PANENSKÁ

I collaborated with Čierne Diery collective to create a three-colour risograph print commemorating Panenská street in Bratislava, Slovakia. Čierne Diery document forgotten, often slowly disappearing, industrial sights of Slovakia, and frequently work with artists to produce risograph prints of said buildings or places. I was commissioned to illustrate Panenská street with focus on two dilapidated buildings, once very noble and important. The print was made using fluorescent orange, red and risofederal blue inks. In February 2020 my print was exhibited at an exhibition as a part of the 189 prints the collective had produced.

DOMASED

I was a part of a collaborative project Domased, which was founded during the 2020 lockdowns. Domased is an online platform and gallery showcasing Czech and Slovak illustrators’ and animators’ visual responses to the current situation. I depicted the importance of plants during the strange times.

SYNTHESIS OF THE DAYS

Synthesis of the Days is my response to the days of quarantine of 2020, when I started noticing small things much more intensely. The smell of coffee and the sounds of music formed a combination that reminds me of these times.

PLACES AND FACES

13

‘Places and Faces’ is a project inspired by my memories of places I visited during the summer of 2019. These illustrations were inspired by my observational drawings in Barcelona, Novigrad and Prague, and subsequently riso-printed using fluorescent orange, medium blue and teal inks.

POSTERS

I created a digitally illustrated poster on the topic of ‘metartmorphosis’, an imaginary concept of being so engaged in an artistic practice, that you slowly start transforming into an art supply. This concept was inspired by Franz Kafka’s short story ‘Metamorphosis’. I added letterpress-inspired typeface to enhance the manual nature of art-making.

I have a large plant collection and I made this digitally illustrated poster to express the satisfying and euphoric feeling of purchasing a new addition.

LABS BY SPITFIRE AUDIO

I collaborated with a British music technology company Spitfire Audio, to promote their virtual instrument music-making software, ‘LABS’. I was inspired by the portability of the software, which can be used wherever and whenever, and created a hand-sewn felt portable music-making kit. It served as the main prop in a short film I made from 35mm photographs, adding simple hand-drawn animations that complimented the playfullness of the LABS software.

UNIVERSITY FOR THE CREATIVE ARTS

I was commissioned to create two murals for the illustration course at University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, UK. These designs were chosen from my personal sketchbooks.

U DOBROŽRÚTA

I was commissioned by a zero-waste shop & gluten-free bakery U Dobrožrúta, to create murals for their two branches in Bratislava, Slovakia. The theme for the first shop was ‘dream’, which I interpreted into illustrated constellations consisting of nature and ecology related images. The colour palette was matched with the shop’s visual identity. The theme for the second shop was ‘happiness’. I created light-hearted, fun character-focused images based on the customers’ remarks found in the comment sections of the shop’s Instagram posts. I painted an additional mural on a wall next to the entrance, depicting the relaxed feel of the shop.

As an illustrator, I want to keep creating imagery that depicts the surreal of the everyday. The surreal is a huge part of my illustration work, as I prefer to capture the real through a lens. At the moment I am enjoying creating murals, which are a great way to experiment with large scale. My main interest within illustration is risograph printing, which is something I want to keep doing for as long as I can. 27
