A very warm welcome to our spring 2019 edition of The Link. 2018 was indeed a very exciting year for Honda. Over the past year many milestones have been reached in terms of research and development, production and on the track. You will all have seen Marc Marquez and the Repsol Honda Moto GP team celebrate a fifth Moto GP class one world championship. The futuristic Honda Clarity has gone on sale in Japan, Honda Jets are proving hugely successful in the aviation sector and research and development partnership agreements have been made with Panasonic and Hitachi to develop world class battery and EV power units. Honda’s quest to deliver to you the very best products in terms of maximising performance, reliability and customer joy, balanced with minimising environmental impact, goes on. At Vertu Honda we are now in our 23rd year with this great Honda brand. We are Honda’s largest dealer partner in Europe, representing 13 car and 2 Motorcycle dealerships across the North East and East Midlands. In the last twelve months we have been proud to deliver a total of 10994 cars/bikes to our customers in our Vertu Honda dealerships. Thank you to each and every customer who took delivery of a new, Motability or used product from us this year. I personally am proud to work with our teams, who I know show daily passion for our products but above all enjoy the customer relationships that have been developed over time. NEW HR-V SPORT
NEW HR-V SPORT WITH 1.5 VTEC TURBO ENGINE Honda has revealed details of the new HR-V Sport, a specific grade for the revised 2019 model equipped with the 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO petrol engine as well as upgrades to the chassis and suspension. The HR-V Sport benefits from the refreshed exterior styling and interior upgrades of the standard 2019 HR-V, with additional bespoke design features. The 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO engine in the new HR-V Sport was first seen in the latest generation Honda Civic. The muscular four-cylinder engine gives the 2019 HR-V enhanced performance, with peak power of 182 PS (134 kW) at 5,500rpm for 6MT and 6,000 rpm for CVT. Honda developed the HR-V Sport to cater to buyers who want a sportier driving experience from a subcompact SUV. As part of a package that aims to deliver an optimised balance of body rigidity, suspension control and steering feel, the HR-V Sport is equipped with bespoke 'Performance Damper' technology. It keeps the car flatter through corners, enhances stability during sudden lane changes, and reduces vibration over uneven roads. The steering set-up is unique to the model, which is complemented by Honda's Agile Handling Assist technology. Upgrades to the elegant exterior design include a new interpretation of Honda’s 'Solid Wing Face’ graphic, with a high-gloss black chrome
panel that replaces the darkened chrome of the standard 2019 HR-V. An exclusive black honeycomb finish is applied to the front grille garnish, which also carries over into the fog light surrounds. The HR-V Sport comprises dynamic styling elements, including a slim front splitter, side skirts, wheel arch mouldings and a more aggressive rear bumper – all finished in black. Sport trim also includes black door mirror caps, dual exhaust pipes and 18-inch alloy wheels in a unique design. LED headlights come as standard and incorporate high and low beams, LED indicators and LED daytime running lights. At the rear, a black chrome garnish across the tailgate mirrors the trim at the front, while the tail lights are enhanced with a dark ‘smoked’ effect and black inner bars as the standard 2019 HR-V. Inside, new seats for the driver and front passenger provide enhanced support in the seat cushion and back rest. The dynamic styling continues in the interior with exclusive combi seats in black & dark red combined with black roof lining to enhance the sporty appeal. We’re very excited about the arrival of this car, it’s a great addition to the HR-V range. Its arrival will also coincide with the return of 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engined 2019 models. 2019 HONDA CR-V HYBRID Since the introduction of the first-generation model in 1995, the Honda CR-V has continuously improved throughout each generation. This latest evolution of the popular compact SUV has been developed to exceed the expectations of customers, with enhanced and unique characteristics. The new CR-V now features a range of sophisticated technologies and superior quality throughout. The all-new Honda CR-V is available with advanced hybrid powertrain technology. The hybrid system uses intelligent Multi Mode Drive technology (i-MMD) combining two electric motors, an Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, lithium-ion battery and a fixed-gear transmission to deliver high levels of refinement, responsiveness and efficiency. It is available in both FWD and AWD formats.
Honda HR-V Wins Honest John Small Crossover Award The CR-V Hybrid is equipped with an efficient 2.0-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, with peak power of 143bhp (145PS) at 6,200 rpm, and a powerful 181bhp (184PS) electric motor with torque of 315Nm. The petrol-electric powertrain can propel the CR-V Hybrid from zero to 62mph in 8.8 seconds in FWD guise, and in 9.2s for the AWD model. The top speed of the Hybrid is 112mph.
The front-wheel drive CR-V Hybrid has achieved CO2 emissions of 120 g/km (correlated NEDC*), with official average fuel economy of 53.3 mpg. The four-wheel drive CR-V Hybrid achieved CO2 emissions of 126 g/km (correlated NEDC*) and average fuel economy of 51.4mpg.

Honda’s unique i-MMD technology is so-named as it intelligently and automatically switches between three driving modes to provide the highest possible efficiency when driving. These modes comprise: EV Drive, where the lithium-ion battery supplies power to the electric propulsion motor directly; Hybrid Drive, where the engine supplies power to an electric generator motor, which in turn supplies it to the electric propulsion motor; and Engine Drive, where the engine is connected directly to the wheels via a lock-up clutch. In most urban driving situations, the CR-V Hybrid will shuffle between Hybrid Drive and EV Drive for optimum efficiency. In Hybrid Drive, excess power from the petrol engine can also be diverted to recharge the battery via the generator motor. EV Drive permits pure-electric propulsion and gives the CR-V a zero-emissions range of around 1.2 miles (2km) depending on the driving condition and battery charge. The Engine Drive mode is the most efficient set-up for cruising at higher speeds and it can be supplemented by an on-demand power ‘boost’ from the electric propulsion motor to supplement engine torque under certain conditions.

At a 40mph cruise, the CR-V Hybrid will typically run in EV Drive for more than half of the time. At 62mph the car will be in EV Drive for approximately one third of the time, whilst achieving the CRV’s maximum speed, the car will run in Hybrid Drive. The software ‘brain’ of the i-MMD system decides when to shuffle between these modes to maximise efficiency, without disturbing the driver or requiring any further thought or input from them. Engineers on the CR-V Hybrid programme have worked hard to ensure that the transfer between power sources – including the engine stop-start function – is virtually imperceptible to the occupants. The smooth transfer of torque means there is no driveline shunt or undesirable feedback
The new model raises the bar in terms of interior quality, sophistication and spaciousness. Benchmarked against premium-brand products, it delivers improved ride quality, steering response, body control and NVH management. Evolved in every way, the all-new CR-V delivers more comfort, convenience and connectivity than ever before. All versions of the CR-V Hybrid are equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, and top-grade cars also feature a panoramic glass sunroof as standard. Available with five seats only with a choice of two and all-wheel drive, the hybrid version of the CR-V follows the standard Honda grading rising from the entry level S to SE, SR and finishing at the top of the range EX. A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE….. We covered the Urban EV in the last issue of The Link, showing a picture of the prototype. With the advent of 2019 additional details have been released, ahead of the production prototype debut at this year’s Geneva Motorshow in March. The urban electric city car, which has recently been seen being tested on public roads, is one of the most hotly anticipated cars of 2019. The production prototype is likely to stay pretty true to the original concept, the three-door design making way for a more practical 5 door set up, however the overall style remains. The car has a low, wide stance and is expected to be 100mm shorter than the current Jazz, so a compact 3.89 meters. Slim A pillars maximise visibility, while inside a floating dashboard will greet occupants. Powertrain details are yet to be released however expect to see the latest lightweight, high density battery configuration together with integrated heat management and energy transfer functions. Range is expected to be around 155 miles. The Urban EV will be Honda’s first electric car to be sold in Europe. Compact exterior dimensions, cute styling and a spacious interior will make it an ideal car for many. We are so excited about the car’s arrival, it’s a true game changer. MULTIPLE MALFUNCTION WARNING LIGHTS
In the rare event that your Honda develops a fault, owners of late model vehicles may experience multiple warning lights on the dashboard giving the impression of a catastrophic vehicle failure. Don’t panic, this is not generally the case! Some years ago, when a vehicle system developed a fault, a solitary malfunction indication light (MIL) would be illuminated to indicate there was a fault with a specific system. As vehicles have become more technologically advanced they rely on many more electronic control modules to operate systems which improve emissions as well as driver comfort and safety. Important information is now widely shared between modules. For example, the engine control module shares driver input data with the vehicle stability assist control module which is integrated with the anti-lock braking control module and shares its information with the electronic handbrake system and tyre deflation system. So, if there is a fault detected by the engine control module, it switches to a fail safe mode and illuminates a MIL; as the engine data is now "unreliable" the interrelated control units cannot trust the data they receive from it and also switch to a fail safe mode subsequently illuminating MILs to indicate this. As you can see, one fault creates a knock on effect for each system causing the multiple warning light phenomenon. The multiple warning light scenario also reduces the temptation for drivers to ignore the malfunction indication. Always refer to the owner’s manual when any warning light comes on as this will advise you on what steps to take. If your vehicle indicates a fault you should have the issue investigated as soon as possible. Vertu Honda Durham welcome to a thriving dealership Our dealership in Durham has expanded its team with two new sales executives, following a £200,000 refurbishment. Martin Turnbull and Aidan Weatherburn have joined the dealership as a result of growth. Vertu Honda Durham received a £200,000 investment, which included a total redecoration of the dealership and refurbishment of the current customer areas and showroom. The dealership was recently voted the 5th best Honda site in the UK, as part of a customer satisfaction survey conducted by the manufacturer. Great Effort by Vertu Honda Mansfield for Children in Need The team at Mansfield raised over £1000 for Children in Need. Throughout the year Ged very kindly managed the supply of various snacks for both colleagues and customers in the customer waiting area. All profits from the sales were put to one side to support the dealerships Children in Need fundraising activities. On the actual day of Children in Need, in addition to various fundraising efforts, the funds were totalled and a very impressive £1011 was raised. Well done to Rob, Ged and the whole of Vertu Honda Mansfield. The team would like to extend a thank you to all customers who helped to raise such an impressive amount.

Vertu Honda Stockton reaches out Vertu Honda Stockton has teamed up with other businesses in the Teesside and North Yorkshire area, to support the beginning of building works for a respite and permanent supported living center. JPC Community Farm, which was established by Paul and Julie Connaughton for their son James, purchased a 23.5 acre site near Stokesley, with support from SLIL Thorntree and Best Bespoke Tenancies, for its most ambitious charity project yet. The James Paul Connaughton Community Farm will provide permanent and temporary respite care for young adults with disabilities and their families. Work started on site in November to provide a 5 star-rated (Outstanding) supported living environment for those with additional needs. The farm will initially offer 21 apartments which include a three-bedroom, two-storey apartment, and plans to further develop respite care, overnight care and day-care centres in the future. Vertu Honda Stockton has supported the JPC Community Farm for more than 15 years, providing cars at a number of events the charity has organised, including the recent Supercar Saturday on Stockton high street, in addition to acting as an ongoing sponsor. The dealership also provided the family with a new Honda CRV through the Motability Scheme in January, waiving the deposit of £750. Martin Boagey, general manager of the recently-refurbished Vertu Honda Stockton, said: “It is important for local businesses to support the communities they operate in. We have a great relationship with Paul and Julie, and the work that the charity does is fantastic. The charity’s project will provide a haven for young adults with disabilities and their families, and we proud to be able to play a part in making the farm and the respite centre a reality.”
Vertu Honda Derby – Long service Vertu Honda Derby is celebrating the dedication of two of its colleagues. Jeffrey Rex has worked for an incredible 42 years, while general manger, Peter Wileman, who joined the dealership in 2014, has worked in the Derby area for almost 30 years. This comes at a time when the sales team has been strengthened with the arrival of Vik Sandhu. The dealership recently benefitted from a £100k refurbishment. The showroom has increased in size, allowing customers to see a wider variety of new cars on display and the area has been completely reorganised with the best-possible customer experience in mind. Peter Wileman, general manager at Vertu Honda Derby, added: “Following our recent refurbishment, we are able to provide our customers with the complete Honda experience, in time for the arrival of models such as the all new CR-V hybrid and the much anticipated Urban EV. As always, we will continue to provide first class customer service, whether it’s a new customer or a familiar face.
Vertu Newcastle Honda is working with the North East Autism Society Our team at Newcastle has supported the charity in multiple fundraising events over the last couple of years. As a gesture of goodwill, the organisation offered to train Vertu Newcastle Honda colleagues on the steps the team can take to make visits to the dealership easier for those living with autism. Someone living with autism may now be able to access the Motability Scheme. As the team has seen a rise in customers and families on the Autistic spectrum visiting the dealership, they were keen to take advantage of the training. The Motability Scheme is designed to help, providing flexible and worry-free access to a brand new, reliable vehicle of choice. Anyone accessing the Scheme can lease a brand-new car, in exchange for a higher rate mobility allowance, with the insurance, servicing, maintenance and breakdown cover included. The sessions delivered by the North East Autism Society were tailored to the dealership’s environment and started with how to understand the disability and the differences in communication. The training then covered the emotional and social well-being of customers and how to make visitors as comfortable as possible. Chad Ridley, general manager of Vertu Honda Newcastle, said: “It’s important to know how to fulfil the needs of every single customer that visits our dealerships. The training delivered by Charlotte from the North East Autism Society was invaluable to our colleagues. “It has taught everyone to be aware of their actions and has reminded everyone to be patient and sensitive at all times. I think that rolling the training programme out across all of our Honda dealerships is a fantastic idea, I know our team has certainly benefitted greatly from it.” We are looking to roll out this training across all Vertu Honda dealerships throughout 2019.

NEW BIKES FOR 2019 Honda has revealed its full 2019 European motorcycle line-up with the introduction of two new model names and three extensively upgraded models, which bring new energy to the middleweight area of Honda’s uniquely broad and deep product line-up. Here is brief summary.
CB500F, CBR500R and CB500X Honda’s lively parallel twin 500cc engine has been sold in over 75,000 motorcycles in Europe since its arrival in 2013. The CB500F roadster has sharper styling from front to back, with more angled nose fairing and side shrouds that interlock cleanly with the fuel tank. The CBR500R is also restyled: it’s narrower and sharper with strong Fireblade styling inspiration. The CB500X compact adventurer has a new 19” front wheel, longer suspension travel front and rear, slimmer seat, wider steering angle and tougher, more rugged fairing which also improves wind protection.
