a unique 6 night fiordland cruise

4 departures only november - december 2013

OCTOBER 2013

This is a 6 night cruise package that allows guests the ultimate access, in safety and comfort, to the wonders of this majestic World Heritage site. This is an invitation to get to know the Fiordland National Park alongside ecology guides who travel with guests into the territory to discover the region’s beauty with endless and unexplored spots yet to be discovered in this geological mosaic. This World Heritage Park is full of some of the world’s most magnificent scenery. Located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Fiordland stretches over 120 miles (200 kilometres) from Milford

Sound in the north to Preservation Inlet in the south. The Park covers some 1.25 million hectares and is the largest National Park in New Zealand. It is also one of the wettest places in the world but it is this rain that contributes to the area’s beauty. Waterfalls tumble down steep mountains to the fiords and rain nourishes rich beech forest. The extraordinary Fiordland coastline and very deep branching lakes were carved out by glaciers millions of years ago. The glaciers left behind a land internationally acclaimed for its absolutely spectacular scenery, isolation and uninhabited environment which became a designated World Heritage Area in 1986.

Editors’ Note Recharge and Restore Here at Verve Magazine, we’re passionate about our stunningly beautiful country, plus obsessed with all it has to offer when it comes to beauty, design and and fabulosity — that’s why we’re thrilled to bring you deets on our favourite lodges/hotels/ restaurants in and around Queenstown. In order to compile this feature, Verve visited three of the most outstanding properties in the Queenstown Lake district, and checked them out for style, location, service, comfort, value, and chicness. All three were uber-luxurious, which led us to the question: what gives anything that special quality? “It is the finest that man can produce at a given time,” says Luxinside*. “The essence of luxury is to erase all traces of work done to retain the ultimate elegance of a seemingly effortless appearance. By endlessly concealing, smoothing and erasing, luxury’s inherent qualities do not reveal themselves to the eyes as readily as they do to the heart.” Our hearts were touched indeed, and we are proud to be able to share our experiences of luxury down south, with you.

We hope that you enjoy what the Verve team has come up with this month, articles like the fascinating history of the spa, and the story of Aucklanders who have left the big smoke, preferring a gentler lifestyle down south. Marilyn from Marilyn’s Hair Salon tells of her journey with breast cancer** and we take a good look at sleep problems – something from which many Verve readers suffer. We chat to Julie Buiso who shares a couple of recipes from her latest book with you. Then there is Peter Hillary, Icehotel and so much more to enjoy. So without further ado – recharge, restore and revel in this issue of Verve! *www.luxinside.com **www.nzbcf.org.nz – go pink for breast cancer month

History of the Spa

Words: Julien Erwin

OCTOBER 2013

15

Dawn breaks softly over the prehistoric landscape. Dense sea fog rolls in, hot springs bubble, salty lakebeds sigh and mud pools settle down and wait. Over time and in various parts of the world a Babylonian princess soaks herself in the warm water, a nuclear physicist inhales deeply as he kneels on the beach sand, a dodo bobs up and down on the salty water and a white rhino wallows in the mud.

It is in such a landscape that one of the oldest of medical procedures – hydropathy – was born millennia ago. The allure of therapeutic water still captivates man and beast to this day. The ancient civilisations of the Babylonians, Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Persians and Native Americans amongst others were enjoying the wonders that nature provided for both healing and spiritual purification purposes. Modern spas owe much to the practices of the ancient Greeks who took personal hygiene and bathing rituals seriously. Geothermal springs were sacred places dedicated to various deities and fresh natural water was essential. Physical exercise was also vitally important and gymnasiums were constructed next to public bathhouses to create complexes that catered to a lifestyle that cherished general health and wellbeing. The Romans on the other hand used hot springs and public bathhouses for almost entirely different purposes. These facilities were used primarily by the multitudes of Roman legions that needed treatment for diseases and wounds they had sustained in battle.

such edicts, continued to frequent the few remaining amenities. During the 13th century there was a brief revival in the bathing culture spearheaded by the Moors in Spain and public bathes offered various medical treatments including bloodletting, enemas and drinking mineral waters. Bathing for pleasure was the order of the day. During the Renaissance of the 16th century bathing again fell into disrepute

FACT: Another Roman invention – cement – facilitated the construction of enormous public baths, thermae – some of which could hold thousands of people! During the heyday of this bathing culture it is recorded that the average water usage per person per day was 1400 litres!

The beginning of the 17th century ushered in another period of abstinence and bathing was deemed a lower class activity! The 18th and 19th centuries saw the spread of spas all over Europe and extremely ostentatious spas sprung up all over the show. Lavish hotels, guesthouses, casinos, theatres, dancing halls and promenades graced their surrounds. The social aspect was as important to the visitors as the treatments they received, if not more so. The gentry came to see and to be seen, to parade their finery on the promenades and ostentation was taken to extremes. The giddy social agenda included breakfast parties, fine dining, attending a theatrical performance or a fashion show and shopping. The resorts also became centres for creativity, artists settled down to paint, writers picked up their pens and composers crafted their music. Each spa offered similar cures but maintained a sense of individuality by taking advantage of increased medical and scientific knowledge and designing their own particular treatments. Diet became an integral part of the healing approach and exercise such as hunting, fishing, skating, tennis, dancing and horseback riding were prescribed.

Remnants of these baths can be found all over the colonies of the Roman Empire, perhaps the most famous one being Bath in the United Kingdom. As the Roman Empire slid into chaos and depravity, the public baths became venues for renewing unhealthy appetites for pastimes like drinking, gorging on food and lewd and licentious behavior. They became centres of debauchery and instead of promoting health, spread disease and sickness. A backlash was inevitable. Following the collapse of the Roman Empire in 476 and the ensuing Dark and Middle Ages, the Christian Orthodox church banned public bathing in order to halt, amongst other ailments, the syphilis pandemic that was overrunning Europe. Public baths were transformed into Churches and all but the elite, who were ‘above’

and was blamed for the spreading of contagious diseases including plague and leprosy. Public baths became meeting places for underground political movements and religious dissidents.

In the 20th century spas continued to build on their heritage and our modern day Spas are venues that offer ‘healing’ based on a much more scientific and holistic approach. A rich diversity of treatments is fine tuned to address a huge variety of ailments and afflictions.

Above: A Favourite Custom, 1909, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema

But whether you are a believer in the remedies that ‘taking the waters’ may affect, there is no doubt that taking a long soak in a thermal hot spring or a spa bath is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Aucklanders Head Peter Urlich

Auckland market, and, for the time being, Peter needs to stay for work. He has been making regular trips back, though plans to make their southern sojourn a regular one. “The area where we are staying is pretty sophisticated,” Peter tells me. “There’s a lot of money down here and there are some fabulous restaurants. In the middle of Arrowtown is a fantastic cinema called Dorothy Brown. It has huge armchairs and is adorned with chandeliers. You can take your wine in to watch the latest movies.” As well as missing the city buzz, Northlandborn Urlich yearns for the sea. “I love the waves, the fishing and the blue ocean,”

When I call Peter Urlich he has just returned from the vineyard of “dear friends” outside of Arrowtown. As a fan of both music and a glass of wine, I feel immediately jealous. “They’ve had the place for about four years and have built a boutique lodge,” he says. “They’ve also built this cool recording studio with a Neil Young ‘Harvest’ vibe.” Did you jam? “Yes of course! And we were drinking incredible pinot noir straight from the barrel.” The legendary musician/DJ jetted his family south for a change of scene and has enrolled his two young sons, Joe and Stan, for a term in a local school. “It’s very well-respected with innovative teaching methods,” Peter tells me. “They’ve fitted in very quickly, we were quite surprised. They already have a great circle of friends.”

“There’s a lot of money down here and there are some fabulous restaurants. In the middle of Arrowtown is a fantastic cinema called Dorothy Brown.” he tells me. “It’s all lakes down here and I’m not into trout! But, it’s human nature to want what you haven’t got. Then, when you’ve got that, you want something else.”

James Cavanagh

hotel was too good an opportunity to turn down for James Cavanagh. “My wife and I were looking for a change of pace and scenery,” says James, Group General Manager of Eichardt’s. “And Queenstown is the nation’s most iconic destination.” The Cavanaghs have two daughters aged 4 and 8, and James believes there is no better place in the world to raise kids. Along with the myriad outdoor activities, the schools and childcare, he says, are outstanding, with plenty of extracurricular opportunities. “As infrastructure grows and we become more enchanted with the flow of life in Queenstown, it’s hard to imagine living back in a big city,” says James. “When you see the lengths people travel to experience this area, we realise how lucky we are to live it every day.” They make three or four trips back to Auckland each year and James admits there are some things he misses: “Living by the ocean is very different to the alpine environment. We used to surf a lot, but the mountains do have their obvious up-sides. I also miss the Blues and test matches!” In as little as a year, James says he’s become so accustomed to the laid back life that Auckland now seems even bigger when he returns. “Auckland has a great buzz, but it’s nice to be able to switch off,” James tells me. “Here, there is one traffic light in the whole province. Beat that!”

“Auckland has a great buzz, but it’s nice to be able to switch off,” James tells me. “Here, there is one traffic light in the whole province. Beat that!”

They are, he says, making the most of their family time together and embracing their new environment. “Like all kids, ours are crazy for their computers,” says Peter. “But we’ve always insisted on getting them outside the old fashioned way. They’re turning into very good skiers and have also shot their first .22 rifle.”

James’ favourite spots include Atlas (“for a beer”), Garage Joe’s (“great long blacks”) and for a distinct French flavour, Les Alpes. “I do rate our tapas menu and wine-list at Eichardt’s of course,” he adds. “We’ve an amazing creative chef and wonderful wine team in-house. The dining scene in Queenstown has really grown up. We can challenge Auckland on a per capita basis, I’m sure. ”

With Auckland property prices ballooning, Peter says many from the city are now moving to the region where you can get so much more for your money. “There are an incredible amount of huge houses dotting the poplar trees. It’s very beautiful.” His family would be keen to move permanently, but he worries that it would be difficult to get back into the

Though the art scene and cultural attractions are growing (her work is being shown at the renowned Art Bay Gallery), they are still in their infancy. Amber misses the festivals and events along with her artisan Auckland friends. She makes regular trips back and takes full advantage of the nearby international airport. “It’s something that is missing,” she says. “And I would encourage more people to come down here to develop such things as the contemporary art, culture, dance and theatre. It has real potential.”

“Energetically, in terms of the power of the land, it really is full on,” say Amber Stephens. “Our place is near the foot of the lake, surrounded by mountains. Even if you’re not involved with landscape art, you can’t avoid the stimulation.” Her connection with Queenstown dates back to the time of her greatgrandparents. The Auckland born abstract artist is now based at her family’s historic stone homestead in the area. “Nevis Valley, right above our home, is incredible,” she continues. “You have to cross rivers and drive past old miners’ huts to get there. It’s like stepping back in time. It’s magical.”

it,” he tells me. “I loved the lifestyle. It was always at the back of my mind to make the move, so when I got the job offer I jumped at the chance.” He now works for internet marketing firm, Xebidy. “The mentality here is so much more relaxed,” he adds. “It’s one thing I notice more when I go back to Auckland, the casual nature of Queenstown. It’s more a case of ‘what you see is what you get’ as opposed to ‘who you know’. It’s not that I dislike Auckland, but it can be quite cliquey.” Living in Queenstown, Gene has learned a whole new side to the region that had previously remained undiscovered to him as a visitor. He tells me his love of the outdoors has intensified greatly since his move. “The accessibility to the countryside is part of the reason I love it so much,” he says. “Five minutes up the road and you’re in some pretty remote places. Quite often after work we’ll go cycling. The terrain and the scenery are so beautiful. There’s so much to do, it’s not all about adrenalin.”

Sublime Saffron Saffron is a word that rolls off the tongue, all the while conjuring delicate images of golden yellow threads, precious aromas and rare taste. It is also the name of one of New Zealand’s top restaurants, neatly located in a charming corrugated building on Arrowtown’s main street (right next door to a wee boutique cinema).

Saffron is owned by local chef, Pete Gawron, whose enthusiasm for all things culinary shines through every dish that is presented to you, ensuring that his eatery is by far one of the hottest restaurants in the Queenstown/ Arrowtown basin. Established 14 years ago, Pete also owns neighbouring Pesto and The Blue Door. Saffron Restaurant is ideally suited to the Central Otago seasons. It has a large outside seating area, great for spring/summer, and a big open fire for the autumn and winter, which provides a relaxed, friendly environment. The décor is modern and comfortable. We arrived on a chilly spring evening and were greeted by our host, Mick Druett, who suggested a pre-dinner drink at the Blue Door. Located in the alleyway behind Saffron, the Blue Door is the ideal place to start or finish your evening. We enjoyed the rustic atmosphere and the radiant heat of a roaring fire, whilst sipping a glass of Quartz Reef Central Otago Bubbles, and a Bloody Mary served molecular gastronomy style, which was quite extraordinary. Once we had gotten into the swing of things, we were ushered back to Saffron where we enjoyed the most amazing degustation menu: eight different signature dishes, each one as exciting as its predecessor, and each

complemented with a matching local wine. We tasted confit of bendigo rabbit, homemade sultana and pinenut black pudding double smoked bacon, baked in puff pastry on braised Lettuce and cranberry jus, and relished slow roast pork belly, with pickled crabapple, sultana mash and black plum sauce. The food just kept on coming. In many restaurants, vegetarian dishes are treated as an annoying afterthought, and usually end up as some sort of risotto offering. However, at Saffron, the vegetarian dishes were imaginative, tasty, different, uber fresh and beautifully plated. A selection of local wines – like Sam Neill’s Two Paddocks, Mt. Difficulty and Sumac were served with our food. If desserts are your thing – then Saffron won’t disappoint: their offering is extensive, and different. With names like goat’s cheese sorbet with dates poached in amaretto, or deep fried salty caramel ice cream with lemon cream, who could resist? Alongside the degustation menu we were served a platter each with tastings of a variety of desserts available, which were utterly delicious. We left having experienced a faultless, perfectly orchestrated wine and food matching evening, a journey into culinary perfection. If you are serious about food – we can

Healing in the Wilderness Introducing RITUALS at Treetops Lodge & Estate, Rotorua RITUALS at the international award winning Treetops Lodge & Estate is a one-million dollar spa, dedicated to totally new ways of experiencing heritage taonga (treasures) of indigenous spa and total wellness therapies in Rotorua – New Zealand’s most important centre of traditional Maori tribal culture. Newly opened, not only to guests, but visitors to the lodge as well.

OCTOBER 2013

Typical Treetops’ guests enjoy walking previously untrodden paths. RITUALS at Treetops offers genuinely new experiences with a choice of day spa and residential wellness programmes to inspire, refresh and brighten one’s journeys. The new spa building has been sensitively integrated into the Lodge’s highly developed vision of combining good modern business practice and world-best hospitality with cultural awareness. RITUALS perfectly complements the ground-breaking Maori Indigenous Food Trail and Wild Food Cooking School experiences offered to Lodge guests and further enhances understanding of both the Lodge’s 2500 acre wilderness environments and of the land’s oncehidden heritage, now shared with us by local indigenous people. Newly built, Treetops have developed a spa with sensitivity to sustainability, environmental responsibility, indigenous and cultural learning and careful consideration to integrating the best in wilderness environmental management. It offers two spa therapy rooms, a sauna, as well as a healing lounge opening directly onto the Treetops private wilderness. Two wooden outdoor jacuzzis (available to guests 24/7), set amongst 800 year old virgin forest, use water sourced from a deep spring, which also provides drinking water of exceptionally high quality. RITUALS presents authentic styles of Maori treatment and healing using natural, locally sourced ingredients, traditionally believed to combine physical and spiritual cleansing. The spa offers two holistic styles of massage, both revered as ancient and sacred taonga. MIRIMIRI MASSAGE begins with an ancient Maori prayer and powhiri (welcome) to honour you and your ancestors, followed by deeply relaxing therapeutic massage with native kawakawa oil to raise the vibration of your physical body. Your mauri (life essence) and wairua (spirit) are encouraged to synchronise, thus giving a sense of well-being, connectedness and balance. Mirimiri massage also works on the central nervous system, aiding the release of tension and stress, bequeathing you deep relaxation, and a sense of clarity and rejuvenation. ROMIROMI MASSAGE is the deeper of the traditional holistic Maori body treatments. Similar to Hawaii’s lomilomi, it combines body alignment, deep-tissue massage and stimulation of pressure points to aid the release of cellular blockages, toxins, pain and extraneous energy, replacing these with positive energy and vitality. Natural body systems

are invigorated, nourished and balanced and the extraordinary lightness felt after treatment demonstrates a positive shift to greater well-being and health. For a quick lift, RITUALS’ third taonga is a Facial Mud Mask with local Rotorua thermal mud and native manuka honey which is complemented by western tradition’s aloe vera and sweet almond oil, creating a facial and neck treatment that cleanses, detoxifies and soothes. Treetops’ three taonga treatments are complemented by a full range of French treatments from Darphin. A professional botanical Parisian skincare range, based on a harmonious blend of plants and pure essentials oils. Every experience at the spa and within Treetops wellness programme is predicated on maximum enjoyment and

The wellness centre offers exceptional cuisine based on healthy eating, of which many ingredients are estate-reared, expertly prepared by a culinary specialist based on principles of organic superfoods and chosen to lead you towards greater health and vitality. A Gym with a Difference… or Three Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

With its grand opening early next month, the Fitness Department promises to be a gym like no other. “You don’t acquire excellence in anything unless you’re passionate about it,” says sport’s psychology expert, Cameron Gallagher. “Everything we do is of the highest quality.” Cameron will take the helm along with friends Dr Neal Singleton and Johanna Bridgman. The men’s friendship spans two decades from when they were doubles partners in competitive junior tennis. “There was no gym at Auckland medical school,” Neal tells me. “Then later, every hospital I worked in throughout New Zealand and Australia had a gym on site, except here. So I always thought Grafton would be the ideal place as it can service students, medical staff and the public.” They knew instantly it was the building for them, but it was an endeavour that they very nearly didn’t complete. After a year of fruitless searching, they even went for commiserative drinks. “We were going to focus on another venture,” says Neal. “Then literally, a week later, we found this site.” “I bumped into Cameron the day after,” adds Johanna. “Our interests overlapped and it all fell into place from there.” Johanna’s role will be as manager and head trainer and she has already planned a heap of classes to put the punters through their paces. “They’re 40 minutes long to accommodate those on an hour lunch break,” she says. “But they’ll have the intensity of an hour-long workout. We’ll be mixing them up and every class will be a challenge.” A host of regular events will be led by some of the industry’s best, including a boot camp which accepts non-members. “We’re literally on the door step of the Domain,” says Neal. “I don’t know of any other gym with such a location, it’s a perfect site for the boot camp.” “You walk out front and see the museum,” continues Cameron. “As the sun sets you can watch the building change shades. It looks fantastic and will be even more impressive come the summer months.” Cameron is especially excited about the ladies changing rooms. “They’re going to be the best in Auckland!” he beams. “I’ve had people researching all of the other gyms.” GHD straighteners are among the many perks female folk can look forward to. For further beautification inside and out, The Fitness Department has a nutrition shop, which will also sell shakes, as well as the best books available to educate you in the psychology and nutrition required for success. Healthy recipes and educational tips will be regularly uploaded to the Facebook page. Neal, whose expertise is in orthopaedic surgery, explains what he believes to be the gym’s most unique

selling point: “We believe in the bio-psycho-socio health model, the cornerstones of which we three cover. The biological is where I come in, Cameron’s forte is the psychological and the social belongs to Jo. I think that’s lacking in most gyms.” The Fitness Department will have a set-up comparable to Les Mills with the price-tag of lower-end names. The team also promise the cheapest joining fees in the city. Cross Fit of Newmarket too, have now moved to their 100 square metre site. “We’re premium gym at an affordable price,” says Neal. And they’re clearly raring to go.

A host of regular events will be led by some of the industry’s best, including a boot camp which accepts non-members. “We’re literally on the door step of the Domain,” says Neal. “I don’t know of any other gym with such a location, it’s a perfect site for the boot camp.” Don’t miss the Fitness Department’s amazing giveaway of a full year’s membership to one lucky ready. October is Breast Cancer Month: Take Action! The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) is challenging New Zealanders to take action this October to fund awareness and education programmes, potentially life-saving research, and to support women with breast cancer. Taking action can be as active or as leisurely as people choose, with several fundraising events happening: • Pink Star Walk, Saturday 5 October – a 5/10km twilight walk in the Auckland Domain. Registration fees and sponsorships will go towards research. • Pink Ribbon Street Appeal, Friday 11 & Saturday 12 October – collect funds by spending time as a Pink Army volunteer, or donate a gold coin to a collector. Phone 0508 105 105 to volunteer. • Pink Ribbon Motorcycle Ride, Sunday

13 October – the Women’s International Motorcycle Association (WIMA) will hold its 10th Pink Ribbon ride in Auckland. • Pink for a Day, workplaces can go pink for a day. • Community fundraising events throughout October – a full list is available at www.takeaction.org.nz • In-store donations throughout October – NZBCF Pink Ribbon donation boxes at ASB branches, Estee Lauder counters, Postie Plus, Coffee Culture, Plumbing World and OPSM stores, amongst others. • Paddle for Hope, Saturday 2 November – a stand up paddleboard regatta, aiming to raise $100,000 to develop a stand up paddle postmastectomy rehabilitation programme. More information at www.paddleforhope.co.nz • Auckland Marathon, Sunday 3 November – sign up to run the marathon or half-marathon at www. aucklandmarathon.co.nz, and donate your sponsorship funds to the NZBCF.

Around 2800 women (and around 20 men) will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Funds raised this October will be used to educate the public and medical professions about signs and symptoms of breast cancer, beyond the well-known ‘lump’, and the importance of early detection by mammogram. The NZBCF is committed to funding potentially life-saving research right here in New Zealand, and will continue to support women with breast cancer through its new 0800 BC NURSE advice line, staffed by a breastcare nurse, and through funding assistance to services such as Sweet Louise, YWCA Encore and Pink Pilates. To find out more about signs and symptoms, visit the NZBCF’s interactive e-guide at www.nzbcf.org.nz For a full list of events to support the NZBCF during Breast Cancer Month, visit www.takeaction.org.nz

Five Breast Cancer Signs and Symptoms You Didn’t Know About Research commissioned from Colmar Brunton by the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation showed that 97% of women aged 20-39 are aware that a lump can be a sign of breast cancer. However, few women were aware of the other signs and symptoms of breast cancer: • A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit area • A change in breast shape or size • A pain in the breast that is unusual • A change in the skin of the breast, areola or nipple, e.g. colour, dimpling, puckering or reddening • Any change in the nipple, e.g. a turned in nipple or a discharge that occurs without squeezing

Around 2800 Kiwi women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and more than 600 will die of the disease. The NZBCF advises all women over 20 to know the normal look and feel of their breasts and to report any changes to their doctor. From age 40, women should be getting regular mammograms. For more information, visit www.anychanges.co.nz

A new book for men is being launched shortly, written by Peter Calder. It is specifically for men whose partners have breast cancer. She’s Got Breast Cancer comprises interviews with a number of men from around the country. If you would like a copy, please email jude@vervemagazine.co.nz with your address and Verve will send you one in the mail.

Breast Cancer, Lymph Massage and Finding the Right Wig Words: Jennifer Laidlaw

“What would you do if I was your wife?” This is the question that Marilyn Whelan asked the specialist sitting across from her just over three and a half years ago when she learned, through a routine mammogram, that she had a small lump in her breast. It was a rather significant decision – whether to have a mastectomy or a lumpectomy. Marilyn, the owner of Marilyn’s Hairdressing in Remuera, has seen many ladies walk through her salon with breast cancer. According to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, seven women are diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand each day. The numbers are surprising, she admits, but fortunately, most of the women she knows have beaten the disease, and it was this knowledge that helped Marilyn to not be frightened by her diagnosis. From day one, she was determined to do whatever it took. Following the lumpectomy, Marilyn’s oncologist informed her that her cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and that she would need chemotherapy. Marilyn listened to the list of possible side effects and then said, “let’s do it.” “To me, chemotherapy was a bit like an insurance policy to get the cells that might have escaped removal during surgery,” she explains. “During chemo I really hunkered down, rested and stayed home, washed my hands often and stayed away from crowded areas to decrease the chance of infection.” Prior to her diagnosis, Marilyn was going to yoga classes five times a week. She was strong physically and mentally – something she attributes to assisting in her recovery. Following her recovery period, she went back to yoga several times a week, listening to her body and resting when she needed to. She also went for lymph massage and learned how to massage her lymph nodes and neck in order to increase movement in her arm (a decrease in movement often follows surgical removal of tissues in the breast and lymph areas). Marilyn admits that one of her biggest qualms of the whole experience was losing her hair due to the chemotherapy. “I had long red hair for more than 30 years,” she muses. “When I started going wig shopping in advance of my hair falling out, all the red-haired wigs were more pink or coppery and I hated them. I finally tried a short blonde wig and absolutely loved it!”

Prior to her diagnosis, Marilyn was going to yoga classes five times a week. She was strong physically and mentally – something she attributes to assisting in her recovery. Following her recovery period, she went back to yoga several times a week, listening to her body and resting when she needed to. She says a piece of advice for anyone going through chemo is to cut their hair really short before it has a chance to fall out. “I already had mine cut short so it didn’t give me as much of a fright on day 19 when tufts of short hair began to come out. I had a lot of fun with the wigs, I had two – one sporty one for during the day and a slightly sexier one for night,” she recalls. Marilyn now permanently rocks a short blonde hairstyle that she says she can’t imagine trading back in for her old longer locks. Marilyn has since retired from doing hair, but continues to run her business. She views her diagnosis as a gift that provided her with reason to ease off her busy schedule and have some time for herself.

Christmas Holiday Stress Begins…Now? We haven’t yet reached Labour Weekend, but Christmas is looming on the horizon. Advertisements and decorations have already been popping up for weeks, the in-laws went ahead and booked a bach during that week you planned to take off to Fiji, and your sister just cried to you over Skype that she can’t bear another Christmas away in England, but tickets are just too expensive to come home. While it might seem like a list of trivial irritations, your body and mind know that at this time of year, things can get right out-of-control. Dr Frances Pitsilis, an Auckland-based doctor and health expert, confirms that over the years, she has observed that stress associated with the Christmas holiday season begins around Labour Weekend and ends on Christmas Eve. “Everyone wants things tidied up before businesses close for extended periods. People want their kitchen renovations complete, that new boat ready, as they’re spending money and putting pressure on themselves. Combine that with holiday parties, sleep is down and alcohol consumption is up, and you have the perfect conditions for a high-stress environment.”

Words: Jennifer Laidlaw

You can imagine by the time December rolls around, many of us are nearing exhaustion point. “During the month of December, my staff know that people start making appointments they don’t keep, they’re frazzled, they come at the wrong times.” Dr Pitsilis shares that peak times for depression are mid-winter, right before a wedding and the Christmas season. How does one navigate these particular events in our lives and ensure that we come out with most of our sanity intact? The key is planning ahead. Don’t overbook yourself, don’t give yourself unattainable deadlines and be aware of how you are reacting to your surroundings. “Stress creeps up on us and we are often the last ones to see what is happening,” says Dr Pitsilis. “We start to get irritable, cynical and unreliable and everyone around us notices before we do.” It is common fact that getting a good sleep, eating a balanced diet, curbing our alcohol intake and exercising are all keys to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and in turn, helping to minimise stress levels. But our common sense often goes out the window during periods of high-pressure and excitement. While it is

hard to say “no” to all those Christmas party invitations and that family gathering at cousin Jimmy’s who you haven’t seen since you were ten, learning when and where to draw the line can help protect yourself from overexertion. Above all else, Dr Pitsilis suggests that we take the time to stop and count our blessings to help put everything into perspective, “fifty per cent of our general attitude is inborn, but we can still influence the way we think.” You can find more information on coping with stress at Dr Pitsilis’ website, www.drfrances.co.nz

LAUGH YOURSELF WELL –

HUMOUR INCREASES PRODUCTION OF NATURAL KILLER CELLS Words: Jennifer Laidlaw

From the outside, it is almost impossible to tell what is happening within the human body. But on the inside, there is a complex network doing whatever it can to keep us healthy. One important player in this network is the natural killer cell. Like something out of the hit Television series Dexter, the natural killer (NK) cell is a bit of a vigilante – relatively rare, this white blood cell has a number of important jobs within our system that all lead to the end goal of destroying tumours, or invasive cells in our bodies.

The natural killer (NK) cell is a bit of a vigilante, destroying tumours, or invasive cells in our bodies.

35

IS STRONG THE NEW LEAN? Words: Melissa-Anne Smit Have you ever said, “but I am eating and exercising the same, so why am I picking up weight?” I understand WHY you are feeling like your body shape has changed and why you would have started to notice a change in your body over the last few years. The answer is Sarcopenia. “Sarco what?” I hear you say. Well, simply put, Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle due to aging. Somewhere between the age of 25 and 30 we start losing muscle tissue and this continues as we age. There are many ways and explanations as to why this happens, but in basic terms from about 25 years onwards our bodies stop being ‘growth’ orientated. Also we tend to continue consuming the same amount of calories while our physical activity significantly reduces. Our bodies no longer recognise the need to maintain the level of muscles we once had. Since we lose about 250g of muscle a year, we only really notice the change in our bodies around our mid 30s. One day you see a bit more fat where there used to be muscle. The great news is you CAN rebuild muscle! Muscles burn calories – all the time – so your fitness routine should always be aimed at regaining and/or maintaining your natural muscle mass. Ladies this means you too! Think of it like this: compare what 500g of firm toned muscle looks like versus 500g of flabby fat. Muscle is also denser so it takes up less space, making you look leaner.

Scientists are recognising the powerful role of NK cells in effectively stopping tumours in their tracks. This is achieved by the use of bacteria to initiate an immune response. Associate Professor Alexander McLellan is leading a study at the University of Otago on the role of natural killer cells in boosting anti-tumour immune response in the body. Their current study model is focused on melanoma, a form of skin cancer that kills more than 300 New Zealanders each year. Assoc. Prof. McLellan’s team is working on a vaccine that uses streptococcus salivarius, a bacterium found in the human throat and used in oral health treatments, to cause a response by the immune system to kill the tumour, which the body has been tolerating as regular cell tissue. The bacterial vaccine acts as an artificial infection in the body causing the immune system to effectively turn on itself, killing the cancerous tumour as part of the introduced infection. Until such a vaccine is proven successful and made available by the medical community, there might be other ways to boost production of your natural killer cells. International research studies have shown laughter to encourage the body’s production of NK cells, although this is seen as having more of a short-term immune-response equivalent to a burst of adrenalin. According to Professor Thomas Petschner, founder of Clown Doctors New Zealand Charitable Trust and Director of International of Medical Clowning and Institute for Integrated Diagnositics at Steinbeis University Berlin, “Humor increases the production and effectiveness of natural killer cells that stomp out germs. These cells are elevated for at least 12 hours after just an hour of watching, say, Will Ferrell run around in his underwear.” There is no denying that laughter and feeling better go hand in hand. So dial up the comedy and laugh yourself well!

Tips for Combatting Stress Words: Rachel Dawson (Naturopath)

This may or may not come as a surprise. A 2000 study found that women more often respond to stressful situations through a model dubbed “tend-and-befriend”, while men follow the “fight-or-flight” model.* Further, a 2008 study on the role of gender and emotion found that women are more likely than men to feel sad and anxious because of stress, and more likely to ruminate on those negative feelings.** Whether you agree or disagree, we must check in with ourselves at regular intervals just to ask, how am I feeling? Am I tired? Am I moody? Am I craving sweet foods? If you are answering yes to one or all of these emotions, you may be suffering from the long-term effects of stress. Here are some simple and easy to implement tips to help you combat those stress effects.

01 Get moving! It’s well known that exercise can increase endorphin levels, but did you know it supports bone and muscle density and aids healthy sleep too? Exercising is a fantastic way to boost your energy levels and self-confidence, as well as a distraction from those things that are making you feel stressed or down.

02 Get back to nature; Nature has a beautiful way of helping us forget our worries and woes. A walk on the beach or stroll in the bush is not only relaxing, but a way to escape the rat race.

03

05

Practice self-care; Take a bath, read a novel or go for a swim. In our busy lives, we often spend time rushing around after others but forget to take time out for ourselves. Taking a little time out each day to do something you love, on your own if possible, will not only help you unwind, but will nurture the spirit and soul.

Keep a stress diary; When you feel stressed or anxious, write it down, and when you feel happy and positive, write it down. This allows you to identify particular areas that could be the cause of stress in your life, but also reflect on the good and positive, which can never be a bad thing!

04

06

It’s good to talk! Talking to others about your fears and sharing your anxieties is a great way to calm the nervous system and release tension. Counsellors can help you distinguish areas and causes of stress in your life, and allow you to work through them, ultimately finding peace.

OCTOBER 2013

Acclaimed by the media as one of the most exciting beauty developments of the last decade, the CACI NonSurgical Facelift treatment has a star-studded following with the likes of Madonna, J. Lo and Kate Moss being fans of the treatment. The CACI Non-Surgical Facelift was introduced to New Zealand through the Caci clinics (named after the famous facial) in 1994 and the popularity of this treatment continues to grow. So much so that the latest CACI machine is now in use in New Zealand. The latest machine, features new and patented technology expanding beyond treating the facial muscles to a variety of skin concerns. The treatment is safe and painless, and feels like a relaxing facial. It uses tiny “micro” currents to stimulate the muscles and enhance your skin tissue, akin to a gym

workout for your facial muscles. Following a CACI NonSurgical Facelift, your facial muscles feel firmer and your skin will be glowing. “It makes sense really that the muscles in our face need as much attention as the muscles in the rest of our body to stay wel- toned,” says New Zealand fashion blogger Leonie Barlow. The Non-Surgical facelift is deeply relaxing and an overall treatment for the face and neck. Results are visible after the very first treatment but a course of treatments is required. Each treatment costs approx. $120. SLOW MOVEMENT – HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING

MEET THE AMIGOS

There is no doubt that 101 Fitness, Auckland’s premier boutique fitness facility, is making waves on the local fitness scene. 101 Fitness is introducing an exciting new service to help people get ‘back to basics,’ the simple, effective and efficient way to maintain health and fitness.

Meet ‘The Amigos’. Six New Zealand celebs giving up their weekly lattes, paninis and pizza, to live on lentils, rice and porridge for five days in a bid to raise awareness, and a little cash, for children who live in poverty in this year’s Live Below the Line challenge.

Owner Melissa was involved in two major car accidents that severely damaged the vertebrae in her lower back and she subsequently lived with excruciating pain. The live-wire architect had almost given up hope when she was introduced to a revolutionary style of training – and so started her journey to becoming a fitness expert and helping many to recover from back pain. Thrilled with her amazing recovery and impressed with over 20 years of scientific research that backed this approach she decided to combine it with the other two principles of wellness and created 101 Fitness. This slow movement/high intensity training style has become really popular in both Europe and the US. The past five years has seen Melissa teach this style both internationally, and for the past three years, in New Zealand. FACT: When you have more muscles you burn more calories. That is why including a muscle-building or resistance-training session in your fitness regime is so important. Muscle is also denser so it takes up less space, making you look leaner and more toned. FACT: Research shows that walking alone is not enough and 3x one hour-long slogs a week is too much (besides, these workouts are usually very inefficient). Nevertheless, it seems that big gyms are usually more interested in the commercial aspects than really helping you ‘walk the road’ to achieving your optimal health and fitness level. FACT: ‘Living’ in the gym is not an option for most people. Luckily research shows you don’t have to, IF your training is efficient – and there is no more efficient training than that offered by 101 Fitness. So, when are you going to give it a try? To book your first appointment call 09 940 77 44 now or email info@101Fitness.co.nz

Sounds like a recipe for drama, a few rumbly tummies, probably a few tears, and maybe a few swear words – and actress, Aidee Walker is catching it all on camera in a web documentary featuring Steve Wrigley, Luanne Gordon, Richie Hardcore, Bobby Brazuka and Michelle Ang. The documentary will follow the six celebs on their own personal journeys as they live on a budget of $11.25 for five days groceries, just $2.25 per day – the New Zealand equivalent of living below the poverty line. You’ll get to see what they would normally eat in a week, what you can buy for just $11.25 in New Zealand, and their own individual ways of handling the experience. The Amigos are friends, colleagues and flatmates and have come together to support NPH New Zealand, a charity partner in this year’s Live below the line Campaign: and an organisation that raises funds for orphaned and abandoned children in Latin America and the Caribbean. Aidee got involved with NPH after attending a fundraising event late last year, and is doing the challenge to help raise funds and take action against global poverty, as well as a personal wakeup call, because she believes “it’s easy to get caught up in our self-centred lives, we need to have more gratitude for how lucky we are.” As a New Zealand artist (actor and short film-maker), Aidee says that things can get pretty tight financially sometimes, but she has been lucky enough to always have people around her who will loan her money or offer her a meal. She was shocked at how difficult it was to budget for the challenge, and was soon sick of plain porridge, beans and rice after eating it for a week. She was humbled by how many good hearted New Zealanders offered her free food or to buy her a coffee, although she could not accept this generosity because this defeated the purpose of living below the line to understand how people who live in real poverty struggle every day. To see more of Aidee Walker and the other celebs living below the poverty line, just visit the NPH Facebook page, www.facebook. com/NphNewZealand for teasers and webisodes, and to donate go to www.livebelowtheline.com/me/theamigos. HEALTH & WELLBEING WITH LULU

Brought to you by Huckleberry Farms

More Than a Feeling There is nothing worse, when you love to keep fit through such exercise as yoga, than to experience pain and be told by health professionals such things as, “you are getting old. You could damage yourself further. Your joints are wearing out.” As it turns out, and as they know (and treat accordingly) at Integrative Pain Care, pain is more than just a sensation, it involves emotion, thoughts, feelings, memory and context. It is often our fear of pain that is more disabling than the pain itself. When I went to see Dr Penney at Integrative Pain Care for my on-going back pain I received a whole new approach. Dr Penney incorporates the latest scientific evidence into a unique plan for each patient to help them, “reconnect with their values and move towards their goals.” He says his way of treating people is, “not a one size fits all approach. We take the time to listen, find out what is going on and help patients to understand their problem and what they, as well as we, can do about it.” I have had pain issues with my lower back off and on for eight years. I’ve had MRI’s and was told my back pain recurrence is due to a disc bulge. It was interesting to find out from Dr

Penney that 60% of people who have a disc bulge report no symptoms. Dr Penney listened to a thorough account of my back pain history, took a look at my back and did some very gentle manipulations. What sets Dr Penney’s treatment style apart is that he helps people make sense of the various issues causing them pain, how they are reacting to it and how to manage it going forward, in a whole new light.

Oriental Oasis Is there anything more indulgent and pampering than a foot massage? It’s not something we are usually comfortable asking our loved ones for and not something we usually offer our loved ones either! So when I stepped out of the Sunday shopping hustle and bustle of Broadway, Newmarket and into the oriental oasis that is Bliss Reflexology, I let out a long happy sigh. The staff, the decor and the ambience make you feel like you have just stepped off the Orient Express to be refreshed at the Emperors’ spa! The treatments take you to a Zen heaven: all you have to do is lie back, close your eyes and enjoy. While your feet are soaking you get a sublime shoulder, neck and arm massage. The therapists know all the acupressure points so any tension dissipates easily. When they move on to your feet you are well into ‘the zone’ for more bliss! Reflexology is an ancient Chinese art. It is understood that all the organs in your body correlate to an area on the sole of your foot, so foot soaking and reflexology (massaging and stimulating these areas on the underside of the foot) are not only relaxing and enjoyable but also detoxifying and stimulating.

Just Relax Think of magnesium as nature’s natural relaxant. If you have anything that is twitchy, crampy, tight, irritable and/or stiff then it could well be due to a magnesium deficiency. It is increasingly common to be deficient in this essential mineral that many of us rely on food sources to provide. But due to food refining, fertilisers and modern agri-business, it is believed that about half the population could be deficient in this mineral and not even realise it. Low levels may be hard to detect and signs of a deficiency can be attributed to a multitude of causes but it’s important to know that it is difficult to get enough magnesium in your diet. The most common symptoms of poor magnesium intake can include poor sleep, muscle cramps, twitchy eyes and chronic pain. Prolonged deficiency has been linked to depression, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and hypertension. It is often difficult

to pinpoint a magnesium deficiency but if your lifestyle includes stress, tea, coffee and/ or carbonated drinks, sweetened foods, medications and/or alcohol then seriously consider a magnesium supplement! The best thing about magnesium is that it is an antidote to stress! It is the most powerful relaxation mineral available and it can really improve your sleep! The other lifestyle changes you can make are to limit coffee, colas, salt, sugar and alcohol. Most people currently get far less than 200mg per day and will benefit from 400 to 1,000 mgs per day. Don’t delay in getting your levels of magnesium up… especially if you are having trouble sleeping!

TRUSTED CARE

IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME Kate McLean Homecare was established in 2002 to meet a demand for private-in-home care within the community.

PARNELL DENTISTRY KID’S CLUB Wouldn’t you love your child to experience NO fear of going to the dentist? Wouldn’t you love your child to have a lifetime of NO fillings? Then let us introduce our Parnell Dentistry Kid’s Club! Starting early (age 2.5 – 3 years old) in a child’s life builds confidence (as you can see with the photo of 3-year old Lachlan in the chair with Michelle Fleet our therapist) and skills that are vital to positive dental experiences and a healthy mouth and smile. Baby Teeth are more important than many parents realise and they can also be very much at risk of the same problems as adult teeth – most notably dental decay. We often have parents asking us if they really need to have their baby tooth filled, when it will come out in future anyway. The importance of the baby teeth is for smiling, communication, speech, eating and of course dentally – to hold space for the developing adult premolars under these teeth, which develop during childhood. These premolars don’t arrive until around age 10 – 12. Of course the adult teeth begin emerging into the mouth from the age of 6 as well!

Kate McLean Homecare specialises in overnight and 24 hour care. The care offered ranges from 4hrs to 24hrs, providing personal care, post operative, respite, palliative and dementia care. Their service provides caregivers who go into private homes offering care and companionship for the elderly. Their main role is to keep the client independent and in their own homes. The agency receives recommendations and referrals from doctors, hospices and health professionals, as well as the personal recommendations from clients and their families. Both Kate and Riet’s greatest reward is the feedback they get from their clients. This is invariably in appreciation of the help that Kate McLean Homecare and the caregivers provide and the difference it makes to their lives. “To ensure delivery of care, it is important to meet the client and their family to set up a care package to suit their individual needs.” Kate believes many elderly prefer to be in their own homes in familiar surroundings with support in place for their needs. “We place a high value on matching the right caregiver with each client and maintaining regular contact with both to keep up with changing needs.” Let them help you today, phone Kate McLean Homecare on (09) 579 1212, visit www.katemcleanhomecare.co.nz or email office@katemcleanhomecare.co.nz

We would like to shift the focus away from drilling and restoring, to be more prevention focused. Insomnia and Stressing About Insomnia: Tips to End the Vicious Cycle Words: Jennifer Laidlaw

Sleep is essential to living a full life, but for many, it’s elusive. Dr Anna Clarkson, a clinical psychologist based in Auckland, explains that there are many common types of sleep problems, many of which can be particularly problematic for women and older adults. “Sleep problems include insomnia, narcolepsy, parasomnias such as sleepwalking and sleeptalking and sleep apnoea. Insomnia, derived from the latin word insomnis which means sleepless, is the most common of these.” Dr Clarkson highlights a study by Paine, Gander, Harris & Reid, 2005 that suggests approximately 25% of New Zealand adults experience chronic insomnia at some point. A wise man once suggested that, “a well spent day brings happy sleep.” His name was Leonardo da Vinci. Dr Clarkson agrees with this revelation, saying that a general feeling of contentment in our lives tends to help us fall asleep more easily. “Insomnia is a symptom, providing a barometer for what else is going on in our lives. It often emerges during periods of stress but it becomes habitual, so it may last long after the initial stress has been resolved. In turn, insomnia causes stress – both emotionally and physically, which may keep the vicious cycle going.” She adds that acute insomnia can also be triggered in response to medical stressors (pain, hospitalisation), environmental stressors (noisy neighbours, traffic), social stress (relational changes and/or losses) and circadian stress (jetlag). “In my clinical practice at the New Zealand Respiratory and Sleep Institute, I regularly work with clients whose sleep has been initially disrupted by life changes or adjustments. Changes in sleep habits often persist long after these life transitions have been negotiated. For other clients, their sleep has been disrupted by stress, trauma, anxiety or working in roles requiring shift work.”

“Insomnia is a symptom, providing a barometer for what else is going on in our lives. It often emerges during periods of stress but it becomes habitual, so it may last long after the initial stress has been resolved. In turn, insomnia causes stress – both emotionally and physically, which may keep the vicious cycle going.”

BELOW, DR CLARKSON SHARES A FEW TIPS TO ASSIST WITH SLEEP. • Reduce your sleep time so that you sleep just enough to feel refreshed the next day. • Create a regular wake time, getting up every day at the same time. • Create a regular schedule to help regulate your body clock. • Seek out natural light during daytime to help reset your biological clock. • Create a comfortable sleeping environment. • Exercise regularly (avoid exercise within three hours of bed time). • Do some relaxation every day: abdominal breathing and mindfulness are helpful in fostering sleep. • Associate your bedroom with sleep and make it your sanctuary. • If you are not asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed and return when you feel sleepy. • Eat healthy regular meals and avoid going to bed hungry.

• Create rituals that foster relaxation prior to bedtime. • Avoid excessive liquid intake in the evening. •Reduce your caffeine intake and do not have any caffeine after lunch. • Avoid alcohol within six hours of your bedtime. • Smoking is likely to disturb sleep, as nicotine is a stimulant. • Avoid taking your problems to bed – anxiety is likely to affect sleep onset. • Don’t try to fall asleep (trying to fall asleep increases anxiety and frustration). • Avoid naps during the day. Sleep is essential to our physical health and emotional wellbeing. If you are experiencing prolonged difficulties sleeping, it might be time to seek professional expertise.

VERVE CHATS TO:

Kirsten Taylor America has just registered insomnia as an epidemic with 56% of people reporting not sleeping well. Sleeping difficulties are thought to show similar numbers here. Thank goodness Kirsten Taylor has come to the rescue! Kirsten Taylor is a naturopath, herbalist and nutritionist, and specifically a naturopathic sleep specialist. Verve spoke to the formulator of the SleepDrops Sleep Support System. Verve: What is it that you really want people to know about the SleepDrops Sleep Support System? Kirsten: SleepDrops is a range of products, which is a mix and match system, designed to aid people who aren’t sleeping properly, and to address underlying issues with their sleep patterns. With SleepDrops I am trying to support my customers, body and mind! By feeding and nurturing those areas people can go on to live happy, vital lives because they are getting support for a great night’s sleep. For example, if mum is getting enough good quality sleep, she is happy and rested so won’t be yelling at the kids and the whole family will function better.

is not sleeping need to be addressed. We also offer advice in the form of a 25 ‘sleeping tip’ booklet and a ‘how to take’ protocol booklet so people can use the SleepDrops mix and match system to suit their individual needs. For example, if they are having trouble going to sleep they need support from SleepDrops for Adults; if they have trouble staying asleep then support would be from Essential Sleep Nutrients and SleepDrops for Adults, and if they are struggling through the day, DayDrops help to soothe and calm a frazzled nervous system and support people to feel more balanced and get more out of their day and ultimately a better night’s sleep.

V: How did you develop the SleepDrops Sleep Support System? K: I developed it in my clinic while working with my clients. Regardless of what issues they had, whether it was menopause, cancer, allergies, arthritis or irritable bowel syndrome, if I didn’t get them sleeping really well, it took so much longer to get the other aspects on track. The deeper phases of sleep are when the body repairs itself and releases human growth hormone, the anti-ageing hormone. Bye bye BOTOX treatments! But seriously, sleep is important for all aspects of the body, mind and spirit. Also short term memories are processed and stored during these phases. It is also very restorative.

V: Where are SleepDrops available, and is the business growing? K: They are available direct from my team, and in stores. Since the launch of SleepDrops, the company has grown incredibly fast. Ten months ago we launched into retail and we are now in 750 stockists throughout New Zealand. We have international internet sales, agents in Hong Kong, and are close to establishing partners in Australia and Singapore. We are also in talks in the United States for distribution. Recently we were excited to learn at the Health 2000 Conference that SleepDrops was voted as the ‘best, most innovative new product’ beating all the big supplement. We are pretty chuffed about that. As New Zealanders we love the underdog and SleepDrops is another great example of a little company making a big difference in people’s lives, and we are proud of that.

V: Do you offer other advice with the drops? K: Yes we do. We have four naturopaths working at SleepDrops to support our customers. It is unrealistic to walk into a pharmacy if you are not sleeping and say, “what should I take?” and expect to take only one product. Sleep is a complex chemical process, all the different aspects of why someone

V: Any last words? K: What we really want to do with SleepDrops is to transform peoples’ lives, by giving them an all round natural sleep solution.

Sleeping troubles? Finally an all natural sleep solution for ALL AGES!

FASHION

Your questions answered by

Meghan Maher Repertoire’s Style Director I have seen lots of coloured jeans in stores but I’m not sure if I can wear them? A trend that seems to continue gaining in strength is the coloured jeans trend. If you have great legs, invest in a pair or two – have fun with different lengths, colours, details and textures. The New London jeans range is incredible this season: they are colourful with lots of designer detailing and very comfortable to wear. If you are not so crazy about your legs, then keep your denim dark. There are some gorgeous darker denims with tonal wash detailing that are looking very new this season. Just remember to make sure that your length finishes on a part of your leg that you like, to ensure a flattering look. The 3/4 and 7/8th jean is looking particularly gorgeous this spring and should be teamed up with a stunning coloured heel. If you usually avoid jeans all together, then try a flat panel (over the tummy area) pull on jean with a high percentage of spandex. We have included one in our own collection called the Totem Jean – it’s just great for customers who struggle with jeans because they have a sway back or proportionally smaller waist than hips.

WHAT’S YOUR STARTING POINT? I get to do some really cool things in my working life. One of my favourites is public speaking. I speak to business teams about why the way they present themselves matters, I speak to young job seekers, high school students, kindy or school mums, clients of various businesses, sales teams, groups of teachers, doctors, pharmacists, hotel staff, accountants – you name the profession and I’ve probably spoken to a group of them. I love it. Interestingly, with all the diversity of audiences I’ve spoken to, there are usually several commonalities among attendees – and one of those is our starting point. The question of why we choose what we wear. Many men for example, make no choice at all, instead abdicating anything to do with their clothing entirely to their partner or wife (studies suggest that moare than 70% of kiwi men don’t actually buy their own clothes). While we women usually DO buy our own clothing, I think we come at it from three main starting points. These can be conscious or unconscious, but each of these will shape the way we dress and the person we present to the world. The first is style and fashion. These women buy because they love fashion, they read magazines, shop often and take real pleasure from wearing their garments. They are not slaves to fashion, but they know what is in and they love to wear it.

A great jean selection in store now The second starting point? Buying clothing with nothing beyond practicality in mind. These women often eschew something lovely because they don’t think they’ll ever have occasion to wear it. They buy shoes to walk for hours in, garments to provide warmth (or be cool), won’t show the dirt, will go ‘anywhere’. The challenge here is that style doesn’t often get a look in. While it’s true that comfort and style sometimes go together, it’s also true that comfort and frumpy always do. The third is money. Women who buy simply based on what they are prepared to spend. This differs for everyone and while I’m not advocating going crazy with your credit card, I do think that constantly buying what’s cheap isn’t doing these women any favours. Poor quality clothing is a false economy and buying simply because an item is cheap is a disheartening act. Buy less – pay more means that bypassing ten cheap tee-shirts that are “OK” for one expensive top that you love and feel great in, is buying wisely. Model Citizen Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Natalie Cantell likes “dad jokes”. I ask her to tell me one. “The past, the present and the future walk into a bar,” she says. “It was tense.” Natalie admits her sense of humour is very sophisticated. So is she. Her resume boasts a degree in communications and a skill set that includes acting, writing, presenting and photography. “I’m always doing crosswords and geeky stuff,” she tells me. “It was always important that I had more going on as I was never really that proud to say I was a model. When I was younger, I think university was my way of giving the finger to the people who assumed whatever I thought they assumed about me.” Does the ‘all beauty and no brains’ stereotype still exist in the industry? “No, God, if only! These days it’s all about this pseudo-intellectual hipster counter-culture, loitering backstage and reading Penguin Classics. But some of my model friends really are some of the most well-read, well-travelled people I know. They’ve lived all over and speak two or three languages. Some even moonlight as amazing cooks, film-makers or musicians. There’s a more intellectual kind of beauty that’s been on trend for a while now.” Cantell was invited to cover the AW14 shows at this year’s New Zealand Fashion Week for the Fashion One channel, which entertains millions of viewers in over 150 countries. “I had so much fun,” she says. “Just being a tiny part of showcasing Kiwi designers in such a colossal way was a dream come true.” Though she now lives in New York with her partner Ben, Cantell is proud of her Kiwi roots: “I think growing up here is the best start you can get in life. I was instilled with this idea that you could go off and do anything you wanted and my mum and sister are both so supportive. They kept me grounded and there was never any pressure.”

Natalie was discovered in St. Luke’s mall at the tender age of thirteen whilst shopping with her father. “I remember being on the escalator and dad leaning over with a really serious face,” she says. “He told me there was a man following us and staring at me. If he came over I was not to talk to him.” Her childhood ambitions were somewhat less glamorous than what lay ahead. She was adamant she would be the first woman to referee men’s first grade international rugby, though later had her eye on the job of the lady who turns the letters on Wheel of Fortune. Her fondest childhood memory is of growing up near the ocean and each spring receiving daffodil bulbs in the mail from her great-great aunt. Now Natalie dreams of going back to university and managing to live in the same city as Ben all-year-round.

shoots she was in and it progressed to collaborations with designers.

“The more I’ve tried to veer away from modelling, the more I end up back shooting,” she says. “Covering shows was meant to be a strategic move into fashion journalism but I ended up getting to know guys like Phil Oh and Tommy Ton who would snap me for their street-style coverage. Those guys are also shooting major campaigns and they began requesting me for jobs. It led to a second wind with modelling.” She tells me the street-style element was a big game-changer as jobs became more interesting. She was asked to style

And how does New Zealand compare with the might of the Big Apple?

Her defining career moment was her first Abercrombie & Fitch campaign, the repercussions of which were dizzying. “When it came out I was in New York and it was everywhere,” she says. “As a teenager I’d thought the models on those billboards were so gorgeous and AllAmerican. Suddenly I’m looking at myself twenty feet high in black and white next to this super-chiselled guy who I became good friends with. We’d be walking down Fifth Avenue and see our faces go past on shopping bags. Girls would go ballistic, but I just saw him as this lovely useless dude who ate a lot of chicken and always had stains on his t-shirts. It’s kind of nice to remember I was living someone else’s dream by hanging out with him.”

“We’re small, but our designers are world class. We should be really proud of what we produce. My friend Alex Catarinella came down from New York to cover the Fashion Week again this year. He’s always blown away by the standard of our collections. One of his final thoughts in his coverage was that Zambesi, who he compared to Alex Wang, ‘could totally go to New York Fashion Week and f—k things up!’ And he’s so right.”

Kate Sylvester has labelled Regal as having “impeccable service”, whilst Yvonne Bennetti proudly proclaims that “Regal are the art restorers of the fashion world.” Crane Brothers have had Regal as their exclusive drycleaning partner for many years and say, “we continue to be impressed by their service, attention to detail and reliability, and they are the only

Auckland drycleaner we recommend to our clientele.” Couture Care by Regal is a specialist hand-finished service, perfectly suited to garments sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish, made from high quality cloth, delicate embroidery or intricate beadwork. The garments are carefully hung on custom wooden hangers and/ or wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and placed in elegant fabric garment bags. With such an impressive portfolio of fashion designers and retailers of highend local and international labels, you can relax when it comes time to hand over your most prized garments – Regal Drycleaners is your new best friend.

AT HOME WITH KARAKTER: Warren Platner 1919-2006 Born in Baltimore USA, Platner studied at Cornell University, graduating in 1941 with a degree in architecture. He went on to work as an architect and interior designer with legendary architects Raymond Loewy, Eero Saarinen, and I. M. Pei before opening his own architectural practice in Connecticut in 1965. One of Platner’s first solo projects was the New York showroom for Georg Jensen, the high-end retailer of Scandinavian furniture and lighting. Another notable architectural contribution was the “Windows on the World” restaurant in the World Trade Centre which opened in 1976. In addition to his architectural work, Platner designed office furniture and was involved in a number of large architecture and interior design commissions. In 1966 Platner designed a range of furniture which was to become a timeless classic. Produced by Knoll International and known simply as the Platner collection, each piece rests on a sculptural base of nickel-plated steel rods, which according to the Knoll catalogue resembled a “shiny sheaf of wheat”. The sculptural bases were made of hundreds of rods, and for some chairs, required more than 1,000 welds. The collection has in the main, been in production since its

introduction, highlighting the ever-growing interest by collectors of mid-century modern design.

BUYING GUIDE /The originals are beautiful and the quality of manufacture is obvious. Copies simply don’t look as well made. /An original will most likely have Knoll fabric to the underside of the seat pads. / Platner’s definition of a ‘classic’: “something that every time you look at it, you accept it as it is and you see no way of improving it.” Karakter sources the finest examples of mid twentieth century furniture and accessories from Europe and we are delighted to have on offer pieces by this celebrated designer arriving in our October collection. HOME OWNERS OPEN DOORS FOR A GREAT CAUSE The owners of 11 stunning Auckland homes will be opening their doors to the public in early November to raise funds for a charity that helps cure Pacific Island children suffering from cancer. Located in Herne Bay, Takapuna, Devonport, Bayswater, Narrow Neck and Stanley Bay, the homes are taking part in the third annual Your Home & Garden Festive Home Tour on Friday November 8. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the tour will be donated to The World Child Cancer Charitable Trust – a charity that is improving the health outcomes of Pacific Island children with cancer in Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. Ticket holders will have an exclusive opportunity to step inside some amazing homes featuring beautiful architecture, interiors styled for the festive season and enjoy a taste of Christmas as created on-site by leading chefs. Your Home and Garden editor Leanne Moore says the focus on festive styling and cuisine is what sets this home tour apart from any other. “Each home on the tour has a different festive theme, from Classic Christmas to Pacific Elegance and Modern Mediterranean. A well known chef will be cooking up festive treats in each kitchen – the likes of New Zealand’s Hottest Home Baker judge Julia Crownshaw, The Grill’s Sean Connolly and magazine food editor Julie Buiso,” says Leanne. Last year’s event raised more than $70,000 for World Child Cancer’s Pacific Chapter. The funds from this year’s Your Home

and Garden Festive Home Tour will be used to continue training Pacific Island nurses, extend the launch of the ‘Early Warning Signs’ programme to Fiji and Tonga and help to provide the medical infrastructure needed to support the increase in patients being treated for cancer. The Your Home and Garden Festive Home Tour takes place in Auckland on Friday, November 8, 10am – 4pm. Tickets cost $60 and are available from Ticketek. FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Julie Biuso Words: Renee Lang

Well-known food writer Julie Biuso is not just celebrating the launch of her latest book this month, she’s also marking 30 years as a food editor. It all started back in 1983 when as principal of the brand-new Cordon Bleu school that had just opened in Parnell, she invited Lindsey Dawson, at that time editor of Today magazine, to the opening demonstration. Impressed by what she saw (and tasted), Lindsey invited Julie to contribute some recipes to her magazine. Then, when Lindsey launched More magazine later that year, she invited Julie to be food editor, a happy arrangement that lasted for 13 years. For some of those years Julie was also a contributing food writer to Cuisine where she stayed for 17 years and was food editor at Viva, the New Zealand Herald’s mid-week colour lifestyle supplement for five years. “I tend to stay a long time in my positions,” comments Julie. “I like to build good relationships with people and develop trust, which gives you a very strong base from which to work. It’s important to me to do that rather than flit around here and there.” Meanwhile, back in 1983, another opportunity presented itself in the form of a regular spot on Alice Worsley’s radio programme that lasted for more than 13 years. There was also a 10 year cookbook reviewing stint on National Radio and some television work, with the late Neil Roberts (which started in that same magical year of 1983) and eventually led to a seven-part series that screened in 1989. Fast forward to 2013 and Julie is about to launch her sixteenth book, Julie Biuso at Home, containing over 270 recipes. “Not only does it have many more recipes than usual, it also looks quite different from my other books,” says Julie. “Vegetables, especially, get a lot of attention this time, but I think the book’s main strength is its focus on main meals, because that’s what people eat every day.”

Many of her recipes focus on a particular ingredient, e.g. jacket potatoes, and how to turn them into a main course for a family meal. Of course there are also plenty of ideas for special occasion dishes, too, but Julie says that inspiration for including quite a few of the recipes came from her two children. Both have now gone flatting and Julie wanted them – and all her other readers – to be able to pick up this new book and find appealing food to cook not just now and then, but every night. And will there be another book? “Definitely,” says Julie. “I love writing, I love the conceptual side of putting a book together and thinking about who will be using it.”

Fast forward to 2013 and Julie is about to launch her sixteenth book, Julie Biuso at Home, containing over 270 recipes... “Vegetables, especially, get a lot of attention this time, but I think the book’s main strength is its focus on main meals, because that’s what people eat every day.”

Annabelles Celebrates 15 Years It seems unbelievable, but Annabelles has been open for 15 years already! I would like to thank the local community and all my wonderful customers for their continued support over the years. Without you, Annabelles would never have been able to carry on for so long! By way of thanks I have always tried to give back to the community by supporting local schools, kindergartens, sports teams and events in any way that I can. Annabelles has always been a family business, and my son Sang has been a familiar face around the restaurant since he was a young boy. After graduating from Kings College, he went to university in America on a golfing scholarship where he completed a Bachelor of Communication. Since graduating he has travelled extensively, forging business connections, attending conferences and researching new ideas. He has also been interested in sailing from a young age, and recently completed his sailing ticket from England to China! Now that he is back in New Zealand on a more permanent basis, he will be doing a bit more to take over the running of the restaurant, so if you don’t know him, pop down and say hi! Fifteen years is a long time to be open, and although we have fixed up bits and pieces along the way as we expanded from a tiny twenty person restaurant to the size we are now, we felt it was definitely time for a fresh new look! We are still exactly the same underneath though – committed to consistently serving delicious, healthy food and great wine.

We would love for you to come and celebrate 15 years with us at Annabelles. Bring this voucher in any time during the month of October and receive a 15% discount* off your total bill. See you soon! *Cannot be used with any other discount or voucher

the first wine from the Beaujolais region which is near Lyon. They used to put a sign outside cafes in Paris – “le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrive!” which means ‘the new Beaujolais is here’. Bonjour Neighbours! It’s nearly time for one of the most light-hearted and enjoyable moments in the wine drinker’s calendar – I am talking about Beaujolais Nouveau Day.

That’s how it all started. Every year I so much look forward to the third Thursday in November because it is a wonderful chance to eat, drink and be merry with good friends over a long and happy lunch with maybe a little Edith Piaf on in the background… A bientôt, Jean-Christophe

Do you know about this fantastic opportunity to have a party and celebrate the first wine of the French harvest? All over the world, it is celebrated on the third Thursday of November – no one is allowed to touch a drop until midnight on the Wednesday. And because New Zealand is the first place in the entire globe to get to November 21, we are allowed to bring this fresh and fruity red wine into our country several days in advance, so we are ready to go the moment the clock ticks over! Wine is often a most serious business, but Beaujolais Nouveau is not meant to be serious – it is young, pretty, cheerful and maybe just a little frivolous. It’s made from the Gamay grape, fermented only for a very short time, and is meant to be drunk immediately. In France, it marks the end of the hard work of the harvest , and a local genius dreamed up the idea of a race to Paris with

A Man of Taste Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Next month sees the tantalising Taste Festival return to Auckland and toasting its fifth birthday, it promises to be a good one. “This will be our most exciting celebration of New Zealand culinary culture yet,” says Rob Eliott, director of Lemongrass Productions, the organisers of Taste. “We’re counting down the days. We’ve seen an explosion of talent in New Zealand over the past five years.” Nick Honeyman is one such talent. One of the city’s most talked about chefs, the 31-year-old heads kitchens either side of the shore: The Commons in Takapuna and Queen Street’s Everybody’s Izakaya. He’ll be helming a stall from each eatery at Taste. “It seemed like a smart decision, then I realised November is the busiest time,” he jokes. “We’ll essentially be running four restaurants for a week. It’ll be interesting.” Among his planned mouthwatering delights are Scallop Congee with Black Truffle, Ora King Salmon with Coconut Sorbet and Crayfish Dumplings with Tuna Tartare. Honeyman recently embarked upon a 21 day tour of 11 cities in Japan. He had fallen in love with the cuisine while working in Paris where he cut his teeth under Michelin-starred chefs such as Alain Passard and Pascal Barbot. “My fiancée and I ate a ridiculous amount of incredible food,” says Honeyman. “Westerners know Japanese food as one restaurant, but each town has its own seasonal speciality. It’s all very traditional and it’s reflected in their dishes. The Japanese love their

food as much as the French do.” While there he not only sampled the legendary – and potentially deadly – blowfish, but also shirako. Or blowfish sperm: “Never again!” The South African born chef worked in kitchens around the world before attending culinary school in Sydney. It was from there that he headed to France. I asked Nick how Auckland’s food scene fares. “I love New Zealand, it feels like Sydney ten years ago,” he says. “There are a lot of opportunities. It’s growing rapidly and people are willing to take chances. There are a lot of great chefs and you have to constantly re-invent yourself, really be on top of your game.”

Honeyman says he enjoys simple food when at home, anything dripped with olive oil and garlic: “After picking all day, I like to have a hearty meal like pasta before I go to bed.” Growing up, he detested cooking, fast food, he admits, was his dream feed. Nick wanted to become a golfer or architect. “My mum was a great cook and I didn’t appreciate the elaborate meals she prepared,” he laughs. “She couldn’t believe that her fussy little kid turned his attention to becoming a chef.” Inspiration, he says, comes from the most simple of things, even from seeing what the staff throw together on their lunch breaks. When he returned from Japan, he wrote a menu in five minutes, though admits his last one took rather longer. Like all creative endeavours, the odd artistic block is inevitable. “Food does come naturally to me,” he says. “But I believe if you work hard enough at anything, you’ll become good at it.” And as for a signature dish? “I try not to. I like to keep evolving. I’d say having interesting flavour matches is my signature.”

ART & ABOUT

Book Reviews 1. THE WORLD ACCORDING TO KARL Edited by Sandrine Gulbenkian and Jean-Christophe Napias Super witty, sarcastic and spot on, the iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld shows he has a huge sense of humour as well as an immense sense of style. The World According to Karl is a collection of sharp quotes, cutting observations and provocative statements on life, love, fashion and Karl, Karl, Karl. Fashionistas and party gossips will adore this little black book. It will go so well with the cocktail frock or the dinner dress and when invited out to dine it will be so much better for your image than a box of Godiva chocolates as a gift for the hostess.

2. WORLDS APART :THE HUKA RETREATS Published by Worldwide Leisure This stunning book serves several purposes. It is a stand alone beautiful pictorial book on Huka Lodge New Zealand, Dolphin Island Fiji and Grande Provence in South Africa: all part of the Huka Lodge family of retreats. It would make a memorable birthday or anniversary gift especially if accompanied by a booking to stay at any of the lodges. It would also makes a lovely token to remember a very special visit to the retreats. The photography is breathtaking, making the best of amazing scenery and the intimate interior shots show just how well cocooned a Huka visitor is in these very special places. Leave a copy on your coffee table as a not so subtle hint as to where you would like to spend your next vacation or special weekend – a lot of sighing whilst browsing the pages and your wish just may come true.

Nellie Titterington is overwhelmed by the visitors and locals who all want a piece (in more ways than one) of the great man. The complexities of his life with his wives Emma and Florence are revealed and how controlling the outwardly gentle the author actually was. Damien Wilkins has woven fact and fiction into a very readable story for bookclubbers and lovers of good reads to revel in.

4..THE ESSENTIAL AUDREY EAGLE: BOTANICAL ART OF NEW ZEALAND Audrey Eagle Taken from the award winning Eagle’s Complete Trees and Shrubs of New Zealand, this new popular publication is a delight. I can see it being coveted by embroiderers, water colourists and gardeners alike for the accuracy of the plants portrayed and for the delicate handling of the illustrations. Audrey Eagle has spent many years collating the diverse range of trees and shrubs in New Zealand, and if I may, I suggest any crafty person could make a set of framed prints if you had mind to take apart a copy of the book. The collection would be a very welcome gift and a great entry level introduction to the history of botanical illustration in New Zealand.

ARTVENT 2013 The incredibly imagery that lit up Wynyard Quarter in 2012 returns once again for the Christmas period this year, as the acclaimed Artvent Calendar transforms the area into a bustling community hub from December 1. Much like the advent calendar many find in their homes, each day in the lead up to Christmas Day, a new piece of artwork created by 24 artists from across the city will be revealed. From suspended installations to multiple objects and printed works, and assured to be some of the most innovated pieces Aucklander’s will witness during the festival season. While the artist themselves give back to the Auckland community, the James Wallace Arts Trust will certainly be giving one of them a very Merry Christmas; exhibiting artists will have the chance to earn a $5,000 cash prize donated by the trust. “It’s a gift from Auckland to Aucklanders,” says Waterfront Auckland Chairman Bob Harvey. “I encourage everyone to come down to Wynyard Quarter to see what will be a magnificent artistic creation and

to take the chance to pause and reflect on what Christmas means to them and how they can give back to those less fortunate.” The Artvent Calendar is one of many events taking place at Wynyard Quarter during the Christmas period, which included three ‘super Saturdays’, a ‘Christmas Eve Extravaganza’, the ever-popular Wishing Tree along with

The good news is that 51% of marriages are a raging success, and uncounted partnerships continue their passion until death do they part. But, the cherry on top is the amazing news that being in a fulfilling relationship and feeling the warm head rush of love is probably the highest rated emotion a human can hold onto in their lifetime. I guess what these statistics all add up to is the fact that coupling is inevitable for most, and usually it’s a good thing. It’s what we crave. But whether you’re fresh out of a Jerry Springeresque divorce or simply enjoying your time with friends, being single and entering back into the dating arena isn’t always an easy transition. Sue Schaare ‘Freeform’ PREVIEW: TUESDAY 15 OCTOBER, 5.30PM Exhibition: 15 – 29 October 2013

Sue Schaare returns to Parnell Gallery with new work this spring. During the 14 years she has been represented by the gallery Schaare has consistently entranced viewers with her distinctive, exurburant style, and the coming show looks set to continue the trend. Sue works directly on canvas, employing vibrant colour, strong lines and visual movement and flow to express the joyful drama and emotional intensity of the musical performances which inspire her. The artist is based in Hawkes Bay where there is an abundance of cultural events, to which she responds with passion and enthusiasm: “People lend themselves to abstraction because of their interesting shapes, positions and expressions whilst involved in various activities. Whenever I attend an orchestral ‘happening’ I get so inspired by the instruments, sounds and movements of the performers that I just have to sketch, which is predominently done in the dark.” This tendency towards abstraction can be seen in pieces such as ‘Jazz Talk’ where lightly described figures become less distinct and merge into areas of pure colour and movement, with barely the shapes and lines of the instruments remaining. Instruments often serve to bring structure and balance to the works, bridging the gap between the abstract and the figurative. In ‘Opening Strings’, the lines of the violin and cello bows lead us from the lively movements of the musicians into an area of vibrant red between the two performers, denoting the intensity of their musical exchange. Space and depth are used to further evoke a sense of the atmosphere, some pieces having figures close to the picture plane and intensely worked. In others a more relaxed and spacious feel is evoked with distance and more muted tones. A playful sense of humour adds to Schaare’s passionate celebration; her work cannot fail to move viewers through its own visual symphony of colour, line and form.

Ten Artists to Follow on Instagram

If you’re tired of seeing puppies, kittens and your friends’ latest food creations on Instagram, add some of these unbelievably talented artists to your feed for a little variety.

SHEPARD FAIREY @obeygiant

JR @jr

HANK WILLIS THOMAS @hankwthomas

An American contemporary graphic designer whose work is a composite of graffiti, pop art, business art, and Marxist theory. Perhaps Shepard Fairey’s most famous work was his portrait of Barack Obama with the word “hope” written in big, bold letters underneath that became the emblem of the president’s campaign.

A ridiculously talented photographer and street artist, JR works anonymously and posts his images on buildings, trains, and bridges. His upfront, in your face style of art engages people in an unexpected way, and makes his Instagram feed worth following.

Travis Louie’s paintings are far out, the characters in his portraits mythical and otherworldly. He fashions his paintings with acrylic washes and simple textures on smooth boards, which help create the mystical effect his work has on the viewer.

ELBOW-TOE @elbowtoe

GARY BASEMAN @garybaseman

ELAINE PENWELL @elainepenwell

Brooklyn based artist known as ElbowToe creates innovative woodcuts, stencil work, large scale charcoal drawing and collages that merge elements of myth, poetry and symbolism.

A contemporary and multi-talented artist, Baseman works as a painter, illustrator, video and performance artist, animator and toy designer. His darkly comedic work has a childlike element to it with underlying adult themes.

Penwell controls chaos using a sharp knife to cut paper and organise shapes. Her incredibly unique, meticulously crafted artwork makes her an interesting addition to your Instagram feed.

ART IN THE DARK 2013, 7-9 November 2013 Set to illuminate installations and urban spaces for the Auckland public, Art in the Dark returns for its fourth year from November 7th, transforming Western Park into a bustling hub under the bright lights. Held over three nights, Art in the Dark challenges artists both in New Zealand and abroad to create projects that not only fit the aesthetics of outdoor urban areas but that must also illuminate the dark using sustainable materials and energy wherever possible.

Over 40 artworks will light up even the darkest nooks and crannies of Ponsonby’s own green valley, as the free event becomes a platform for bright minds to show off their talents and show the incredible glow of ingenuity this event has brought to the city. Having started in 2010, Art in the Dark has grown into Auckland’s premiere light

festival, with 2012 seeing over 40,000 people attending, witnessing over thirty light installations – with projections, performances and large scale immersive experiences from some of the most innovative creators the public will have a chance to see.

“This delightful event, which came out of nowhere three years ago, turns art viewing into an adventure sport in the otherwise under-used park.” Janet Mcalister, NZ Herald, 17 Nov 2012.

Music Reviews

Words: Angus Brown

JACK JOHNSON FROM HERE TO NOW TO YOU

KINGS OF LEON MECHANICAL BULL

DVD REVIEW: THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST

Like his namesake, the great AfroAmerican boxer, this guy’s a seriously cool cat. Musician, former pro surfer, environmentalist and all round nice guy. That’s Jack the man. And the music? Well, sure, he can be schmaltzy, but he knows how to write a great melody, full of ukulele’s, cruisily-strummed guitars, and lyrics layered with a wisdom rarely found in today’s music (Miley Cyrus take note). The new album is lighter and happier than his previous two. But to say they were dark and broody is like saying Robin Williams had some really edgy moments in Mork & Mindy. From Here wafts and whistles its way like a gentle trade wind from I got you to home with a couple of nice love songs and musings on the domestic bliss that is the Johnson household in between. Jack’ll be in Auckland come early December. Until then, this is best enjoyed laid out on a recliner, Wayfarers on, with a Malibu Sunrise at the ready.

Yup, this a Kings of Leon album alright. Good to see the four Followill lads from Nashville have recovered from their 2011 internal meltdown and are back with their sixth studio album. All the hallmarks are there; the exquisitely pained, soulful wailing of Caleb, backed up by the bad-ass Gibson Thunderbird bass and hard hitting drumming of brothers Jared and Nathan, capped off by the epic, echoing lead guitar of cousin Matt. The album charges out of the gate with the single Supersoaker – a solid if forgettable number. The other single, Wait For Me, has a groovy bass-line that sounds like the boys had been going through a Cure phase (which, would of course be a good thing). Rock City and Tonight stand out (the lead guitar in the latter track has a hauntingly ‘Edge-like’ quality). Taken as a whole, the album is cool, but it’s not as cool as Because of the Times and Only the Night.

“Where do you see yourself in 25 years?”. “In 25 years I’m gonna be the dictator of an Islamic republic with nuclear capability”. A witty response to a pretentious fellow Wall Street analyst is meant as a joke, but may ironically prove dangerously prescient. Director Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) does an excellent job of bringing Mohsin Ahmed’s novel to life. This nicely shot drama-suspense takes place immediately pre and post 9/11, jumping in time between a hostage crisis in the present, and Pakistani-born Changez Khan’s (Riz Ahmed) love of and eventual disenchantment with corporate America. Ahmed is ably supported by Kiefer Sutherland, Liev Shreiber (The Painted Veil) and Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), but it’s the foreigners, Om Puri (Ghandi) and Turkish actor Haluk Bilginer (The International) who are more interesting to watch. There are also some stunning shots of Istanbul and Lahore, and a stirring new song by Peter Gabriel and Atif Aslam.

NEW CREATIVE PRECINCT OFFERS ARTISTIC OPPORTUNITIES As part of the revamp at the landmark Ponsonby building, Auckland Council is calling for proposals to use new studio and gallery spaces, and to run creative tuition programmes during 2014. The changes at Artstation have been made in order to support vibrant, connected and liveable communities through arts, creative and cultural activities. “This is an exciting time for Artstation. We want to involve as many creative people and ideas as possible in order to make the vision a reality,” says Kaye Glamuzina, Auckland Council Manager Arts and Culture.

For thirty years Artstation has offered visual arts tuition, but from 2014 it will include music, digital media, performance and writing tuition. Weekend programmes, taster classes and shorter courses will be introduced too. Art and creative tutors are invited to submit proposals to run these. Expressions of interest for programmes, gallery and studio hire for 2014 close on 14 October 2013. Artstation will close from 9 December until late January 2014 for maintenance, ready to open again in February.

Behind The Black Door Words: Shirani Alfreds

No one really knew what to expect from the opening of the Black Door Art Gallery on 22 September 2013 at 251 Parnell Road, given it was husband and wife team Mark and Alison GlasgowPalmer’s first venture into the art world. Just driving past its premises proved promising as crowds spilled out onto the pavement and the gallery’s gleaming black door (of course) was thrust open to welcome all into its light, colourful space. Cupcakes, tea, coffee and welcoming mascot golden retriever Toby added a personable feel to the sophisticated space exclusively featuring New Zealand artwork and jewellery. The gallery is the product of much soul searching by the couple after Mark was made redundant in the New Zealand pharmaceutical industry. With a background in business, education and art between them, they decided to pursue the dream of owning their own business with something they were both passionate about. Passion indeed is clear, as sourcing artists they say, “was a lot of fun and involved studio visits all over New Zealand and the opportunity to meet some very clever Kiwis!” Featured opening painters were Dean Buchanan, John Papas, Peter Miller, Kay Palmer, Jos Coufreur, Mark Olsen, Shirley Cresswell and Justine Hawksworth. Ceramic artists Peter Collis, Rachel Carter, Kate McIntryre, Jengis Poor and glass artists David Traub, Gary Nash, Lynden Over and Katie Brown were also on display. Mark’s mother Kay, a Taupo based oil painter has two pieces exhibited and his stepfather Ross, a potter, has several pieces. The gallery will run regular ‘Featured Artists Months’ whereby a portion of the gallery will be dedicated to exhibiting the works of that artist. BLACK DOOR GALLERY - NOW OPEN IN PARNELL CONTEMPORARY NEW ZEALAND ART AND DESIGN FEATURING A SHOWCASE OF RECENT ARTWORKS BY: Dean Buchanan, Jos Coufreur, Justine Hawksworth, Peter Miller, Mark Olsen, Kay Palmer and John Papas.

You are invited to view a beautiful selection of works at the Black Door Gallery, including paintings, prints, glass, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, lighting, and more. All created here in New Zealand by a group of very talented Kiwis!

VERVE CHATS TO:

Sarah Bloxham, Marriage Celebrant Verve: As a celebrant what sort of training did you have to undergo? Sarah: In New Zealand, you don’t actually have to do any training, compared with in Australia. I don’t agree with this so I put myself on a three week celebrant course, and also PowerTalk which gave me the ability to speak confidently. These helped me become the celebrant I am today. V: Verve knows that you are a positive and passionate person – this must help incredibly in your role as a celebrant? S: Yes, it does. My personality makes this a perfect role for me to assist couples in their special day along with loving all things ‘weddingy’ and wanting to make it the best ceremony it could be. V: How did it happen that you were one of the first celebrants to perform a samesex marriage ceremony in New Zealand? S: Firstly, I put myself forward for The Edge weddings. This was a competition where a girl couple and a guy couple would win their weddings – in Rotorua. After being interviewed, I was finally selected and the planning began with lots of Skype and emails, as neither couple were in Auckland. We did finally meet at a café in Mt Eden, so we were real to each other! V: Was this a dream performing New Zealand’s first double same-sex marriage, which was on the radio and television? S: I love being a marriage celebrant – I think that’s really obvious. August 19 was a moment in history I was a part of. The law change is now about allowing two people who love each other to get married, no matter what their sexual orientation is.

V: What are your most treasured memories from the double same-sex marriage ceremony you performed for radio and television? S: The licenses running in the door via Dena from The Edge via the court! I then continued the ceremony getting to the the fabulous kisses, signing the licenses, then passing them to our couples at 8:43am. I’m sure we were New Zealand’s first but I said to them “your license will have a date on it and you’ll finally be married. You will be one of the first”. Seeing myself on television later was pretty cool. I received so many phone calls and text from friends, family and couples. But my most treasured memory for that hectic day was having my partner Chris with me. He’s my rock, and very encouraging knowing how passionate I am about weddings. It’s great to have a person by my side. V: Did you ever believe you would be in the wonderful position of performing a double same-sex marriage? S: It’s not something I ever thought about. To me, every wedding is important to the couple, whether you are a straight or a same-sex couple – I just had to balance two couples. I meet a lot of fantastic people, and every single person is different in what they want, where they are getting married and the feelings involved. V: Are you booked up with many marriages? S: I do have a lot of bookings right out to 2015, but give me a call to see if I am available!

V: What tips do you have Sarah? • Top tip - don’t pick your celebrant based on price, otherwise everyone would shop at The Warehouse. • Choose a celebrant who is confident and experienced. • Make sure you have a connection with them. V: Why would I choose you to marry me? S: Choosing me as your celebrant is about a connection, this is the most important thing, and if someone has referred you to me, that’s a great starter too. Finally, I’m here for you. Whether you are in Auckland or overseas, give me a call or email me via my website and let’s see if I am available for your wedding, your baby naming and occasionally I do funerals. They are all important days in our lives. I’m on www.mycelebrant.co.nz or on www.facebook.com/mycelebrant

MEN MATTER

Limitless Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Beyond the Edge is a docudrama recounting Sir Edmund Hillary’s and Tenzing Norgay’s scaling of Mount Everest. The movie has been met with much critical acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival and is due to hit our cinema screens later this month, 60 years since that historic climb. “I’ve been quite closely involved with the film,” says Peter Hillary, Sir Edmund’s son. “I acted as consultant and provided them with additional information; put them in touch with guides for the re-enactments in the Mount Cook area. The logistics of working at high-elevation are incredible, you’re just debilitated.” Peter has climbed the seven highest summits on each of the seven continents, including reaching Everest’s peak twice. In 1990 he did so with Sir Edmund, the first father-and-son duo to do so, and again in 2002 alongside one of Tenzig Norgay’s sons, Jamling. Peter has trekked to both Poles, including another father-and-son first when they established a new route across Antarctica. I ask Peter about the pressures of living up to his family name. “There was a lot of expectation, there’s a lot attached to the name.” he tells me. “As a youngster that could be challenging at times, but, by and large, it was a good thing. It opened many doors.” Though Hillary’s childhood was one of activity and adventure, Sir Edmund discouraged him from embarking upon a mountaineering career preferring that he took up a trade such as engineering instead. But Peter had already caught the adventuring bug. “When I turned 17, I drove with a friend down to South Island and climbed a few of the peaks,” he says. “I’ve never looked back since.” How do you handle the fear? “You manage it. As your confidence and experience grow, you don’t feel as exposed. It’s a progressive thing.” Public speaking, he says, can be just as terrifying.

I meet with the adventurer at Aotea Square for the launch of Hillary Foods, a range of healthy spreads and cereals. Peter points to the Town Hall where his mother performed with the symphony orchestra as he sat and did his homework in the stalls. He plays the clarinet, though hasn’t for a while. His musical release now comes through belting out a few hits in the shower. He talks of seeing Hillary’s Honey in grocery stores in Remuera. Continuing his father’s philanthropy, proceeds from the food range will head to the Ed Hillary Charitable Trust which works with organisations in New Zealand the Himalayas. Peter tells me of one of his most memorable endeavours which has a list of names that would grace many a dream dinner party. “It wasn’t a particularly heroic expedition, but it was a marvellous adventure with incredible company,” he says. “The group was my father, Neil Armstrong and aviator Stephen Fossett. We flew a small plane to the geographic North Pole. To have shared ten days in the Arctic was unbelievable, especially as Armstrong was such a private man.” Were there similarities between him and your father? “There was an underlying ambition, a commitment to succeeding in their fields.

It’s something Neil talked about, the pleasure of witnessing someone who is good in a chosen area. He really enjoyed being part of that team.” There was outrage in some quarters when a recent article in a UK newspaper ‘stole’ Sir Edmund and labelled him a Brit. Peter, however, is rather philosophical about the mistake. “It was a British expedition,” he says. “Back in 1953 our passports said New Zealand citizen and British subject. We were all part of the commonwealth. We were the Kiwi cousins all in it together. It wasn’t as cut and dry back then as it is now. It was a British expedition, a British success, but it was also a marvellous success for New Zealand.” Perhaps the epitome of the legendary can-do Kiwi attitude. I ask Peter where that attitude comes from. “It really comes out of hardship,” he says, “from being at the wrong end of the world. If you didn’t have something you’d have to be innovative to solve the problem. We’re a nation that believes in ‘having a go’, in ‘giving it your best’. It has evolved into what being a New Zealander is all about, and that’s a truly great thing.”

VERVE MAN

A Way of Life

Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

The art of hospitality and proud Greek blood course through the veins of Reno Verikakis, the New Zealand Marketing Manager for Sofitel Luxury Hotels. His Cretan parents ran several restaurants in Australia and his earliest childhood memory is of standing on a milk crate washing the dishes out back. “I miss my home in Melbourne so much, but it helps to come here to work,” Verikakis tells me. “Melbourne has the greatest population of Greeks outside of Athens, so the European feel of Sofitel reminds me of it.” Reno has been in the business for 14 years, working throughout Australia, Asia and New Zealand. He began his career with Rendezvous Hotels and Resorts and in Adelaide was responsible for opening their first five star hotel. From there he moved back to Melbourne to open their first luxury boutique hotel, featuring designer rooms, luxury amenities and celebrity chefs. Three and a half years ago he arrived in Auckland to assist re-branding Rendezvous Grand Hotel Auckland, the biggest hotel in the country. “When the opportunity arose with Sofitel Luxury Hotels, it was too good to miss,” says Verikakis. “Because of the European influence and local nuances it is my favourite brand and makes me even more passionate about what I do. The New Zealand hotels have won several awards this year and they continue to get stronger.” The next twelve months, he says, will be especially exciting. Wellington will receive its first Sofitel and will add a true five star luxury hotel to the capital. Additionally, Auckland will become home to their new designer label, Sofitel So. “It is a massive win for New Zealand, Auckland and for myself, personally.” Sofitel So sought design inspiration in Bangkok, Singapore and Mauritius from Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld and Kenzo respectively and Reno tells me a similar big name will be assigned to Auckland. But the shortlist is “very top secret.” Reno compares hoteliers to thespians. “I like hotels to have personality,” he says. “Everyone is on show. It’s theatre, it’s a performance. When we get up in the morning, straighten our ties, polish our shoes and put on our Sofitel lapel pins, we’re on display. We’re on stage. Our guests expect the very best and we want to provide exceptional service and go above their expectations.” He gets a special kick witnessing guests’ reactions

to the little things such as knowing their names when they arrive at check-in (“little tricks of the trade”). The hundreds of candles that flicker each night in honour of the French capital, the city of light, offer the most enchanting of welcomes. “Everything we do is handcrafted,” continues Reno. All public spaces are adorned with fresh flowers to reflect Marie Antoinette’s love of petals. After each battle, win or lose, Napoleon would open champagne for his men with the back of his sabre. It is a tradition upheld in the hotel’s Sabrage Bar where guests keep the cork, beautifully boxed and certified. “We want to arouse emotion. The hard work, the greetings, the design elements and the resulting expression of the guests, you then know it’s paid off. It’s magical.”

Additionally, Auckland will become home of their new designer label, Sofitel So.

THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION? How online video is revolutionising the way we learn. Do you recall doing maths at school? Barely awake as the teacher droned on about calculus and wondering, “when will I ever need to know this, and will I remember it if I ever do?” Do you remember how hard it was to do the exercises without a good tutor, and the difficulty of recalling the teacher’s examples? I certainly do. Well, a few years ago a very smart hedge-fund analyst was tutoring his cousins in high-school calculus. He lived in New York, they lived in New Orleans, and so he recorded a video of himself doing the exercises and put that video on youtube. It allowed them to pause, go back, watch it again and figure things out in their own time. Without thinking much about it at the time, he’d made the video public and it became a viral sensation. Six years on and that same analyst, Salman Khan, is now the head of an enormously successful non-profit organisation called Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org) that is re-writing the rules about how education, and even classrooms, work.

are stuck). It also means the students can progress at their own pace and time, more often than not outside of the classroom – the stats show that even during holiday periods students are logging in and pushing themselves ahead. As a parent, school trustee and technology enthusiast, I find this incredibly exciting, and it’s something that everyone in education should be watching with interest – it has the potential to ‘flip’ the classroom and actually improve teacherstudent contact time. But it’s not just for kids – businesses and organisations like the police are using online learning more and more. So go on, sign in to Khan Academy today and learn what you never did in school. James McGoram is an author, designer and the director of Messiah Studio, a web-design company based in Parnell, Auckland. Visit www.messiah.co.nz for your free online business guide.

Khan Academy has thousands of videos, from basic addition to advanced calculus, and tracks each students’ progress through a series of exercises related to each video. Because the exercises and the testing are automatic, and because there is a clear video about every topic, the teacher is free to assist those that need it most (the system even alerts the teacher to students that

WELCOME BACK RUDY’S PC SERVICES Rudy and Rosemary Lang of Rudy’s PC Services, have been supporting people with computers for 14 years in Auckland. They begun at home and then moved to Ellerslie in 2004. Rudy’s PC Services continue to support people in all areas of Auckland.

Welcome back to our Tips ‘n Tricks column. We have just launched our new website www.rudys.co.nz which has new laptops, tablets and PC’s that you can purchase directly. You’ll also find links to our Remote Support and general information. Our services range from troubleshooting software problems, supplying quality hardware, to tuition. Our office is at 29 Robert Street, Ellerslie and we offer a mobile service if required. Also available is remote support. RUDY’S TIP FOR SPRING: With digital cameras now so popular, it is more important than ever to backup your data. Holiday snaps, wedding photos or just photos of the kids having fun, can be lost forever if the hard drive in your computer fails, a power surge wreaks havoc, or your system is stolen. There are many ways to avert disaster or at least minimise the damage. Backup to CD, DVD, USB memory stick, or my favourite, an external hard drive.

An external drive has a large capacity so you have space to add lots of files. It shows in your computer as another hard disk and copying files to it is very easy. You can set software to automatically backup your important data and best of all you can put it away in a safe place away from your PC or laptop. For those serious about backups, another option is to use an online backup service. You pay a monthly subscription for space on a backup server, and the software supplied by the vendor will automatically backup your critical data at a time specified by you. Data can be retrieved online to rebuild your system should disaster strike. At Rudy’s PC Services we can help you set up the best solution for your needs. Call us about anything regarding your computer and we will be glad to advise you and fulfil your requirements. Phone 579 7809 or email rudy@rudys.co.nz. JOURNEYS

Northern Lights Chill Out

Words: Shirani Alfreds

Forget the imitation hotels and questionable crowds at Auckland’s Minus 5 Ice Bar. For the original and real ‘chillout’, head for Sweden’s ICEHOTEL on the banks of the Torne River, and bask under the stunning Northern Lights!

enjoy other subarctic activities. These include dog-sledding, reindeersledding, moose watching (from a mini bus or on Icelandic horses), hands-on ice sculpting, ice driving classes/excursions on a frozen lake in Mini Coopers and a Raidú encounter with the Sami culture. A Northern Lights tour may also be arranged via airplane or by ice driving.

In 1989, founder Yngve Bergqvist, inspired by Japanese sculpture, commissioned two formations in Jukkasjärvi. This resulted in a 60-square-metre igloo named the ‘ARTic Hall’. Curious visitors streamed from afar, and the Swedish King graced its presence in 1992. When Herb Ritts (leading fashion photographer) immortalised Kate Moss posing within a sculpture at minus 40 degrees for an Absolut-Versace campaign, the hotel’s fate was sealed as an artful and glamorous destination-stay. More than two decades later, fashion houses and rock stars continue to use its premises for shoots and videos. So what exactly makes the hotel stand out aside from its cool reception? Firstly, it is born again year after year – for obvious reasons. Ice melts you see, and this presents the glorious opportunity for new artists and designers worldwide to be invited to showcase their talent using only frozen water from the Torne

River and their imaginations. Aside from the hotel, the serenity and haunting beauty of the Ice Church is renowned on its own, inviting meditative pursuits as well as weddings and christenings. Yet the main attraction of course lies in the experience. Upon retiring to bed, it is recommended that you abstain from a hot shower lest sweat freezes on your skin making you cold(er). You then slip into thermal underwear and a woolen hat (honeymooners should be realistic about expectations at this stage), and climb onto your bed built from ice blocks, a wooden frame and mattress. It is layered with a sleeping bag and reindeer hides. Cold comfort may be found in the fact that whilst it may get to minus 30 degrees (being located just 200km above the arctic circle), the temperature within the hotel stays between minus five and minus eight, with the hotel providing appropriate clothing. You then wake up to a cup of hot ligonberry juice. If all this sounds like a euphemistic form of Scandinavian torture to you, then you do have the option of escaping to normal (read: warm) accommodation. Most guests sleep one night ‘on ice’ for the experience of a lifetime and then transfer to the ICEHOTEL’s warm premises to

Last but not least, of course a visit to the original ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL Jukkasjärvi, for a drink ‘in the rocks’ is mandatory, so Skal! (‘Cheers’ in Swedish).

PETS

SPRING CLEAN YOUR PET

HUMAN NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS – ARE THEY HARMLESS? The challenges of our modern hectic lifestyles take a toll on our bodies. When it becomes difficult to consistently achieve a healthy diet, an exercise regime and sufficient sleep, many of us reach for nutritional supplements. Candice found her 5-HT supplement made a real difference to how rested she felt after sleeping. She put the capsule next to her glass of water, but minutes later noticed that it was missing. Lisa, the disarmingly cute pug, had helped herself!

I often ponder, the longer I work as a small animal clinician, the more difficult it seems to get. Every case is like a game of Cluedo. Ask the right questions (history), pick up the right clues (clinical exam) and solve the mystery (diagnosis) to win the game (treatment plan and follow up). Luckily, like most veterinarians, I am up for a challenge and being an ’A type’ personality I am of course motivated to win, or at least put the effort in trying. Sometimes on my weekly dog walking meditation afternoon, the clouds part and the light bulb fires. Am I approaching ill or suboptimal health the wrong way? In this day and age, especially with the urbanisation of our pet population, could poor health be simplified and could we do a bit more catching before the falling? If I had to decide on what most commonly causes pet health problems in our animal companions I’d say it comes down to two things: what goes on your pet and what goes in them. Consider your pet’s environment. Parasites, household chemicals (like floor and laundry detergents), weeds, grasses, moulds, pollens and of course what products we (or the groomer) use on skin and coats. Our pets are the canaries in the coal mine – often the first to go down when there is a problem in the home. What we feed our pet is equally, if not more essential in the fight for better health. A healthy gut dictates optimal systemic health and overall wellbeing. As Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.” No wonder he is the father of western medicine as this simple philosophy will be our catch cry in the near future. This month ‘Spring Clean’ is about assessing your pet’s overall health. It’s a chance to go back over the basics and a reminder, as a pet owner, some things are easily missed or forgotten. Wellbeing checks are not just about disease protection and ensuring immunity is up-to-date. They are about making sure your individual pet is at its optimal wellbeing and is prepared for the year and health challenges to come. Let us help you to Spring Clean your pet. Find out more at www.thestrandvet.co.nz or go to The Strand Vet facebook to WIN great prizes to help promote more thinking around choosing to optimise your pet’s good health. Serotonin overdose, also known as serotonin syndrome, generally occurs after ingestion of SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), but can also be seen with inappropriate intake of serotonin supplements. These products, which can be purchased over the counter without a doctor’s prescription, are not necessarily innocuous. Less stringent safety and efficacy regulation is applied to nutraceuticals than pharmacy only medications. Weighing in at 7kg Lisa is tiny compared to the humans for whom the 5-HT tablet was intended! Worst case scenario could have seen Lisa comatose or even dead. Despite the rapid actions of her horrified owners, Lisa arrived at the Animal Emergency Centre (AEC) having partial seizures, profusely salivating, and with breathing difficulties. She was admitted to hospital for supportive treatment, which included anti-convulsant medication, intravenous fluid therapy, and lots of TLC! Thankfully by the morning she was almost back to her cheeky self. Lisa is the sweetest dog, and the AEC team were overjoyed to achieve such a happy outcome for her, and for Candice. To let Candice have the last word: “I had no idea that my REM sleep remedy could be so harmful to our dogs. I never leave it on my bedside table now and we are certainly more careful with any kind of supplements... especially with a pug who thinks everything is food!” Dr Lisa Ferguson Animal Emergency Centre 97 Carrington Road, Mt Albert, T: 09 849 2121 Please see our ad in Verve’s Market Place on page 97.

THE TROUBLE WITH RAW FEEDING… A well-planned raw diet will support optimal health in cats and dogs. However, if the diet is not appropriate or well-planned, raw feeding can actually lead to health problems – some of them very serious. Effective digestion requires a healthy gastrointestinal system. If a cat or dog consuming grains (processed pet food) is also fed raw food, it will struggle to properly digest the protein and bone, and ill-health will follow.

wildly Natural New Zealand Pet Food

With the increase in the number of raw pet food products in the marketplace, accompanied by a lack of retailer knowledge, we are seeing a growing trend towards feeding a mix of raw and processed foods. If the diet is a mix of raw and processed food, the following problems will occur: • • • • • • • • • •

borborygmis (tummy rumbles) farting and bloating anal gland problems irregular bowel movements, diarrhoea, constipation strong stool odour gastroenteritis, bacterial infection mucus or blood on the stool skin and coat conditions (manic itching) overgrooming (cats) impactions and obstructions of partially digested material

LOCAL & BUSINESS

MATTERS OF INTEREST: IT HAS BEEN A HISTORIC MONTH FOR AUCKLAND The Auckland Council approved the proposed Unitary Plan for notification and a formal submissions phase, after five days of discussion and fine-tuning decision making. This followed 22 workshops over eight weeks with councillors, local boards and council staff as we took on board the 22,000 pieces of feedback and what we heard from the 15,000 Aucklanders who attended public events. As my deputy Penny Hulse said, the plan has come a long way since March. We developed this plan with our communities using a brave new process and the proposed plan now reflects a careful balance between quality development in the right places and the concerns of our communities. There have been many changes. Check out the proposed Unitary Plan online or at your local library – the council has information available on what has changed since the March draft and Aucklanders have until February 28 to make a formal submission. The same week I had the pleasure, ably assisted by my threeyear-old grandson Luca, of unveiling Auckland’s first electric train, which is now undergoing testing on our network. These modern, quiet and efficient trains, together with the CRL, will mean faster and more frequent services across the whole commuter network. As the first term of the first Auckland Council draws to a close, I am pleased with what we have put in place for Auckland and its people. With the input of tens of thousands of Aucklanders, we developed the Auckland Plan, a shared vision for our physical, social, cultural and economic development over the next 30 years. We have agreed a proposed planning rulebook which gives us the tools to help Auckland grow, with greater choice of homes, better connected communities, and well-designed buildings and public spaces we can all enjoy. The Unitary Plan will also enable us to look after what makes Auckland special – our beaches, harbours, maunga and built heritage. And we have agreed with the government our shared transport priorities and immediate action for our housing challenges. Yes, there is always more work to be done and improvements to be made, but now we have a strong foundation in place.

CONSERVATION PARK FOR GREAT BARRIER WILL PRESERVE ISLAND’S UNIQUE TREASURES When I was first elected in 2008 I committed to being a guardian of conservation in the Hauraki Gulf. We are incredibly fortunate to have so many beautiful islands on our door step. Last month I visited Great Barrier Island with the Minister of Conservation to launch Conservation Week, announce a pest eradication project, and my proposal that the island be the site of a Conservation Park for the Hauraki Islands. If this happens, it will be the largest Conservation Park in the Auckland area and a treasure for generations of Aucklanders to come. Great Barrier has the largest wetland in Auckland, a significant sanctuary area, two scenic reserves, eight recreation reserves and two historic reserves. The island is home to many precious birds, animals, flora and fauna including pateke, lizards, black petrels, teal ducks and blue penguins. There are also more than 100km of tracks that attract a high number of visitors, particularly during summer. In my view this is an important decision that needs to be made, particularly around conservation and tourism opportunities in Auckland. Upgrading the publicly held conservation land will improve protection for Great Barrier, give it greater priority for management and help maintain the island for visitors. I also believe it will be a boost for tourism in the Auckland region. I am currently working with the local community, and iwi, to get their feedback on the proposal. These views will then be sent to the Minister of Conservation who will make the final decision. Preserving our local environment is one of my top priorities. Establishing a conservation park on Great Barrier Island will be an important legacy for Auckland, both as a local and national treasure.

The opportunities for you to be involved continue. Make a submission on the proposed Unitary Plan – and vote in the local government elections. Make your voice count.

I know many people in Auckland care passionately about our environment, and the Hauraki Gulf, and I am interested in hearing from anyone who would like to support this initiative. Please email me at mp.aucklandcentral@parliament.govt.nz

HELPING YOUTH AVOID THE WELFARE TRAP

COUNCIL MUST MOW ITS OWN GRASS It’s disgusting that Auckland Council simply does not want to know about its shin-high grass that is now widespread across the city.

The National Government’s detailed valuation work on the future lifetime costs of those on benefits has confirmed what we all might suspect: if young people are allowed to settle long-term on a benefit, the costs are enormous, both in terms of the personal opportunities missed by those young men and women and in terms of the financial burden placed on the rest of society. The future lifetime cost of the welfare system today is estimated at $87 billion. Sole parents spend an average 15.8 years on a benefit with a lifetime cost of $234,000. Youth spend an average 18.9 years on a benefit, costing $239,000. The statistic that jumps out is 60% of current beneficiaries aged 30-39 came on to a benefit aged 16-19. These are the women and men who have been entrapped by our welfare system, despite the best of intentions. Given this, it makes sense to do everything we can to avoid young people settling into life as a beneficiary. Paula Bennett has been right to focus the government’s welfare reforms on sole parents and young people, with better support to help them move off welfare into work earlier. We’ve invested more than $470 million over the past two budgets to maintain that momentum built through $88 million Future Focus (2010) changes. Now, rather than simply handing over a cheque each week and walking away, government agencies intensively support people into work. Our efforts are paying dividends. On average, 1,500 benefits are cancelled every week because people get into work. The annual number of grants for sole parents on the DPB are at their lowest since 1996 It will take years to undo the damage caused by the multigenerational welfare dependency that we as a society have allowed to develop, but if we maintain the momentum of the past five years we will all be better for it.

Last month I was ruled out of order for raising the growing issue, with Mayor Len Brown threatening to throw me out of the Council Chamber during the final meeting of the Governing Body for the term. Mowing council-owned lawns is surely core council business. Yet since 1 July, council contractors have stopped mowing berms in the former Auckland City area, and also seemingly the likes of many pocket parks, road reserves, and grassed traffic islands across the isthmus. The long grass around Auckland is there simply because a majority of councillors voted back in June to cut this long-held council service, while putting up rates another 10% for many households in the old Auckland City. This was all about supposedly saving $3m per annum. However at the same time a majority of councillors signed off $30m being spent on a whitewater rafting facility in Manukau. So mowing council lawns is no longer core council business but whitewater rafting is. Go figure! This is not necessarily about the wealthier areas as many of those streets remain tidy. The berms that are not being mowed are often outside multi-dwelling rented properties that don’t have a lawn mower, or outside the homes of the elderly and many others who for various reasons can’t mow council’s berms easily. The likes of Mt Wellington, Panure, and Glen Innes are particularly bad. We’ve now got into the crazy situation where many residents are now being asked to produce medical certificates in an endless effort to try to convince Auckland Transport to mow its own lawns. Three months on, and with the onset of spring growth, the policy is clearly not working. The city looks scruffy and the mayor and his supporting councillors can no longer bury their heads in the sand (or the long grass). Before it gets any worse, Auckland Council now needs to urgently instruct Auckland Transport to readjust its massive budget, stop fighting with ratepayers, and just get mowing. MATTERS OF INTEREST CONT: HANDING OVER PARNELL’S GLADSTONE PARK FOR A TREATY SETTLEMENT WILL NOT RECTIFY INJUSTICE – JUST CREATE ANOTHER New Zealanders are fair-minded people, of whom the overwhelming majority support the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process, recognising there have been injustices in the past which need to be corrected. The government’s current approach to Treaty settlements – rush them through ASAP, within a predetermined fiscal envelope – also has an increasing tendency to ‘top up’ financial compensation with both surplus government land, and highly-prized parkland. When parkland status remains unchanged (like the recent volcanic cones settlement) the public is usually accepting. Problems arise when it is offered as commercial redress – meaning valued open space and recreation areas are privatised and subject to commercial development. This is currently happening at Gladstone Park in Parnell. The Office of Treaty Settlements through its agent ‘Policy Shop Ltd’ have negotiated a deal with a group of Hauraki iwi, Marutuahu, to transfer the title of the Fred Ambler lookout for ‘cultural redress’ and Parnell tennis club and childcare centre for ‘commercial redress’. Gladstone Park (1.6ha) is Crown-owned and highly valued by the community. For over 100 years the upkeep has been paid by the council and local ratepayers. The deal was negotiated privately, where no affected parties or neighbours were consulted. Last month when we got wind of what was happening, the Local Board chairman, Shale Chambers, and I blew the whistle. Parnell historians are bemused about how tenuouslybased the claim is. The land was part of a generic ‘native reserve’ where the Crown built a hostel and church for Maori in the 1850s. ‘Thames Maori’ regularly visited the original Mechanics Bay in their canoes to trade with the new Auckland settlement, yet they can’t understand how this transient historical association has led to a land claim in the 21st century. If the government believes and justifies their claim, it should compensate the iwi some other way. Meanwhile I urge the community to write to Prime Minister and Parnell resident John Key and local MP John Banks asking them to protect Gladstone Park from this Treaty settlement. This deal will not rectify injustice – just create another.

Mike Lee Councillor for Waitemata and Gulf

DOG-FRIENDLY POLICY ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT They are part of the family, loyal and sometimes referred to as “fur babies”. Across the greater Auckland region there are 85,818 dogs registered, and this adds-up to a phenomenal amount of shampooing, vet visits and dog walking. Throughout this election I have door knocked over 6,000 homes across the inner-city and dog owners have told me their frustration with the lack of transport options. Two woman in Grafton, totally unrelated, mentioned the hundreds of dollars a year they spend at the downtown carpark because their dogs cannot ride on the train that rattles past the train station. The current Auckland Transport rules allow only guide dogs and guide dogs in training on buses if under supervision of their care-giver. However, for decades dogs have been allowed onto Waiheke ferries and bus services and I believe it’s time we look at extending the dog-friendly network across Auckland. Many international cities, like San Francisco, have small dogfriendly transport policies, which say “if it’s small enough to fit on your lap it’s small enough to go on public transport.” To make this work, there will need to be rules in place to ensure dogs are well-behaved, leashed and that people clean up any mess. Whether or not a dog can ride on a bus or train should ultimately be up to the discretion of the driver. Pets teach children valuable life lessons, like how to communicate, be empathetic, nurturing, confident and resilient to change. Dogs are an everyday part of living in Auckland and it’s time to take practical steps to have more dog-friendly transport options.

JOIN THE CELEBRATION! Please join me and hundreds of others as we celebrate the local government election results: 5pm Saturday, 12 October at Libertine, 37 Drake Street, Victoria Park Markets.

Good luck to all the candidates.

HIGHWIC’S SWEET PEA FESTIVAL ABOUT TO BLOOM BE AWARE AND BEWARE New property management offices are appearing across the city. There are no regulations for Property Managers. They are not obliged to have a Trust Account or have their accounts audited. Anybody can open an office, stick a sign out front and be in business: no qualifications, no trust account and no experience, and oh yes – their management fee is lower than the other reputable property management offices and it is very tempting to go with them. The old saying, less is not best, is sure true. Do you want to be an out-of-pocket-landlord or a tenant trying to find out where your rent and bond have gone? If you, the landlords, are not getting paid your rent, you must sort this out immediately and fire the property manager. There should be no excuses, unless the tenant is not paying their rent in which case you should have been notified of the situation already. I am not saying all new offices are not trustworthy, but you must ask the relevant questions: • What experience have they had in property management? • Do they have a trust account? • Do they carry out regular inspections? • Do they have character references? • And do they have insurance? Draw your own conclusion from the answers to your questions. Many people think managing rental properties is a doddle: NO WAY! It is a very involved and serious business and it requires exceptional people with many skills to be able to do the job professionally, plus enjoy it. I know I am one of those: I love my job. 15 years on and I am still amazed at some of the situations that arise. Never a dull moment here at Just Rentals!

The garden of one of Auckland’s most loved historic buildings is about to be transformed into a floral extravaganza. Highwic – the New Zealand Historic Places Trust property in Newmarket – is holding its Sweet Pea Festival and Garden Party on November 23-24. “Preparation for the Sweet Pea Festival has taken place throughout the garden, where an historic photo shows towering sweet pea plants in bloom,” says the manager of Highwic, Cheryl Laurie. “Our garden volunteers have constructed bamboo tepees and hoops in this area, and seed stock will be sown in three phases to ensure a long period of flowering.” Internationally renowned sweet pea breeder, Dr Keith Hammett, provided about 30 different cultivars for the November festival and will lead two tours as part of the Garden Party on November 24. “The garden party will also feature a café, live music, mezze platters and prize for best dressed hat,” says Cheryl. Newmarket Primary School will display the best entries in their own Sand Saucer Competition, and inside Highwic itself, two featured arrangements by local florist Davina Prankerd of Vida Flores in Newmarket will take pride of place. Tickets to the festival, garden party and tours will be available both from Highwic and from Stirlings Garden Centre in Greenwoods Corner, Epsom, Auckland.
