Editors’ Note

Energy, spirit, enthusiam

The Verve is a rock band (famed for their Urban Hymns), a letting agency and an award-winning baby stroller. You can get coffee and cabinet food from Verve; Verve will also design the best events for your company; while the Verve Real Food Catering is simply out of this world. Verve is a florist in the making, a bittersweet symphony, and a versatile, easy-riding hybrid bike. Verve is many things to many people, but for us and (hopefully) for you, Verve is your iconic go-to local monthly lifestyle mag. Fortuitously, verve started out in life as a word meaning ‘special talent in writing’. This was around the same time that Charles Perrault published Tales of Mother Goose, St Paul’s Cathedral opened, and slave trading was rife. From the French word for ‘vigour’, verve was, by the mid 1800s, the word for energy, spirit and enthusiasm. When our magazine was named, there were few businesses around with this name, and, as far as Auckland goes, none that we could find. We loved the name as it encompassed all we treasure about life, the people and the other things in it. Verve magazine (Auckland) has changed a lot over the years, morphing into the sophisticated and fabulous product you now hold, but one thing that has remained the same is the spirit at its very essence. Filled with enthusiasm, energy, motivation and get-up-and-go, Verve continues to be a kick-ass read, both in print and online. The September issue is packed with all the usual Verve sparkle and zest, with an extra sprinkle of kindness from people like Kristina Cavit of the Kindness Institute, the Cloud Workshop’s Deborah Smith, and good old Shitbox Rally – now into its seventh year of raising funds for cancer research. Oh, the places you can go with Verve: from lands of grizzlies, orcas and black bears, all the way back to Remuera Station, where we set up our spring fashion shoot (see page 12). There is nothing like art in all its forms for developing and strengthening connections in young minds: see page 102 and 104 for fascinating takes on the subject. We take a behind the scenes look at the cosmetic manufacturing industry, and guest writer, Nadine Rubin Nathan, celebrates the coming of age of real women in fashion. Dreaming of a country home in a warm place? Look no further than page 86. This idyllic holiday home perched high on a hill in Mallorca boasts an earthy yet contemporary feel, with a definite dash of Moroccan flavour incorporated into a sophisticated, modern design. So much to see and read this September, as always, eagerly bought to you by the team at Verve. Enjoy and see you next month. — Fran & Jude.

Orcon’s Fabulous Designer Modems Life in the 21st century delivers up essentials in our homes that streamline our lives and keep us connected in a way our forebears could never have even dreamed of. One of those ‘can’t live without’ items is the Wi-Fi modem. Yet, even though designers endeavour to make them look sleek and stylish they’re, well, it has to be said, a bit of an eyesore. So we hide them away or attempt to disguise them, which can have a negative impact of their efficiency. “Generally modems are mass produced and are pretty stock-standard; beige and ugly, with one purpose in mind. Not a whole lot of design-thought has gone into them,” says Taryn Hamilton, general manager of Orcon. It’s why he decided to introduce Orcon’s innovative Designer Series. “We’d always wanted to do it, sexy things up a bit and these are cool, unique and different. Far more effective than ‘shouty’ ads,” he says. “We asked five artists who are a mix of different personalities to take part: Otis Frizzell, Flox, Anna Leyland, Askew One and Andrew J. Steel. When we approached them they were all so enthusiastic, it was great. I was a little bit anxious because I didn’t want to take a piece of amazing artwork and have it come out cheap and stickerlike, but they came out beautifully. They jostle for position in terms of popularity. My favourite is the black and white graphic work of Perception by Anna Leyland -- it sits in pride of place on my coffee table.” ‘Stitchbird’ and ‘Kakariki’ by Flox delivers infusion of bright colours and native birds, Anna Leyland’s ‘Perception’ and Otis Frizzell’s ‘Cable Manaia’ channel authentically Aotearoa designs, while Askew and Andrew J. Steel’s artworks give a solid nod to their street art roots. Some of the original artworks were auctioned on Trade Me, collecting over $5,000 for wildlife charity, Forest & Bird. “I did bid but I wasn’t a winner,” says Taryn. More than just a pretty face, the modems also offer a practical solution to a 21st century décor dilemma. You see, many people experience internet connectivity issues

due to modems being hidden in a cupboard or tucked under a couch out of sight when actually, they should be in a prominent spot to get the best internet coverage, somewhere that provides the strongest signal for devices like smart TVs that need the most bandwidth. Orcon’s modems make you want to display them. It’s a double win, serving up great internet coverage and a gorgeous piece of art. Which is your favourite? The Orcon Designer Series limited edition modems are available to all new Orcon customers – with only 500 modems printed in each design. See the modem designs at orcon.net.nz, or check out the creations being made here: youtube.com/OrconChannel

ORCON’S TIPS FOR MODEM PLACEMENT: • Wi-Fi is essentially a radio signal – it can travel through walls, but it will weaken the further it travels. For best coverage throughout the home, pick a central location. • With smart TVs and video streaming services on the rise, it’s likely that your TV will become the largest consumer of internet in the house. Somewhere near the TV is a prime spot. • A key disruptor of smooth-sailing internet is interfering devices – avoid having the modem near the washing machine, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, older cordless phones and the microwave – any household equipment that contains a large magnetic coil should be avoided. • If you live in a built-up area or an apartment complex, interference from your neighbours’ networks is also trouble. Where possible, try to avoid installing the router next to shared walls. L-R: Andrew J. Steel Laid Back, Askew One Ramey

17 REMUERA FEATURE Sep 2016

A Good Knight Sir Rob Fenwick is utterly aghast that the buzzer at his gated Remuera home is on the blink and I have been left standing in the “freezing cold” (it was only a minute at max). He offers me a hot drink and something to eat. Tea is served in a lovely china set, with cream, and we take a seat in the airy, light-filled living area to chat for around an hour about subjects such as oyster farming, saving kiwis, and even the Queen. I leave with the impression that Sir Rob Fenwick is the kind of older man that every younger man should aspire to be: worldly, wise, and thoroughly, thoroughly decent. I congratulate him on his recently bestowed knighthood, and ask how it feels to be a ‘Sir’. Turns out, he’s not so keen on the title part (“it’s rather outdated”), but is “incredibly honoured” by the recognition. “I was fortunate to have been awarded a Companionship of the Order of New Zealand in 2006, so I was already part of the club,” he says. “This was a promotion! But, it really was a very big surprise, and my family and I are very proud of it.” Rob was a staunch supporter of the change of flag campaign but stresses that that opinion is no reflection on his political beliefs. “The Westminster system has served us well,” he says. “I didn’t want to change the flag because I was opposed to the monarchy, which confused a lot of people. It wasn’t a snub to the Queen. I do think New Zealand will become a republic at some point, though I don’t see any need to hurry. I think she’s been an inspirational female leader.” Title’s are nothing new to Rob’s bloodline. Sir Frederick Mappin, Rob’s maternal great grandfather was bestowed a baronetcy and was one of the founders of the British Liberal Party. “A huge figure in Sheffield”, he had a successful business making springs for the “burgeoning locomotive industry”. On top of all that, Mappin also found time to start the Sheffield Art Gallery and city university.

Rob has kept himself just as occupied – described by the Herald earlier this year as “quite possibly, the busiest man in the country”. The former journalist and PR man is famed for his environmental endeavours, most notably for co-founding the nation’s biggest municipal composting business, Live Earth Ltd, while also chairing the Predator Free NZ Trust, Kiwis for Kiwi and the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge, among others. And, about that oyster farm. Thirty years ago, Rob bought a coastal block of land “at the bottom of Waiheke Island in a beautiful bay called Te Matuku”, which he successfully lobbied to have turned into a marine reserve. The site was also home to a “derelict oyster farm”, which, Rob admits, he initially tried to get rid of, but later discovered a new, ‘greener’ way of harvesting them (suspended freely in buckets, instead of affixed to unsightly wooden racks). Now, he beams, many of the top restaurants in Auckland serve shellfish plucked from his bay mere hours earlier. “I’ve always had a profound love for the natural environment and the things that make New Zealand special,” says Rob. “It’s probably in my DNA. Things at risk are worth fighting for. I’ve also been ambitious to prove that business can still work within an environmental construct and be successful.” I ask if he worries New Zealand’s ‘clean and green’ reputation leads to complacency. “That is something that has always concerned me. The reputation has served us well, however, it implies that we don’t need to to do anything. There is no call to action. We sit at the bottom of the world where the weather and the huge ocean has forgiven us many of our sins – air

pollution is blown away and water pollution washed away. Climate change is the by far the biggest challenge the world is confronting, and in many ways, the horse has already bolted. Many of the discussions in recent years, such as Kyoto, have been about how to stop climate change, but we can’t stop it, we can just slow it down. We have to think of how we must adapt.” Rob’s regular travels to Antarctica over the past two decades (he led a winning campaign to save the Antarctic huts built by Ernest Shackleton and Robert Scott) has, he says, enabled him to observe up close global warming research: “It is an important way of determining how coastal settlements all over the world will be effected by, and in tun deal with, the ice melt.” He is more optimistic about the eradication – or at least drastic reduction – of predators in New Zealand, and, in turn, the preservation of our native birds. “We’ve been trying to manage mammal predators for ever,” he says. “In addition to our work [with Predator Free NZ and Kiwis for Kiwi], there are thousands of volunteers who are committed to the conservation of the birds.” When the Predator Free Trust was set up, he says the government were wrong-footed by the scale of public interest and have since set up funding partnerships with philanthropic organisations for large scale conservation projects. I ask if he’s confident of their success. “It won’t work if we have to kill the pests one by one! We need to rely on new technologies and innovations that are still being worked on. The idea of the total eradication of predators may be a long shot, but if we reduce the populations of rats, stoats, possums and wild cats by 80%, the birdlife recovery will be phenomenal.” Such campaigning has added some rather major milestones to the storied legacy of Sir Rob over the past 12 months or so. The knighthood followed an induction into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame and the New Zealander of the Year 2016 final, and in 2015, he was awarded the Sir Peter Blake Medal.

“I take great pride in knowing that I’ve made a bit of a difference in the way New Zealand operates in regards to the relationships between business and the environment,” he says. “They need not be at the expense of each other. Environmentalists must acknowledge the hugely important role of business in civil society and businesses must realise that the environment is a fundamental contributor to New Zealand success. Whatever part I might have played in helping the scales lift from people’s eyes is very satisfying, whether I get an award for it, or not.” — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Beauty through the Ages ...

29 HEALTH, BEAUTY & WELLNESS Sep 2016

Perfection is a fascinating concept, yet hardly one that can be used for describing humans, for it is our flaws and imperfections that make us real, memorable and the special people we all are. Putting this feature together was so much fun most especially as we got to work with some supremely gorgeous Auckland ‘gals’, all beautiful both inside and out, and each one so different from the other. Best of all was their collective sense of humour and readiness to give anything a go. Thank you ladies. The time spent doing this shoot was a treat.

MEET THE COVER CREW Anne-Grete What do I do? I am a professional organiser, and I help people declutter and organise their homes and offices so that they can be productive, proud and purposeful. I also decorate interiors, set up systems for making paperwork paper fun, and help people when they move — house or office. What is your philosophy on life? From Hamlet: “This above all, to thine own self be true”. If you could be a colour which one would it be? Indigo. What is something you have tried, but will never do again? I did two weeks cycling in Bhutan a couple of years ago — it was an amazing experience that I am really pleased I did, but not one I would choose to do again. From where/whom do you draw your inspiration — whether it be clothing or design? Travel: colour and people. Interiors: fashion and anything that is beautifully designed. Amazing women like Oprah, Helen Mirren, Miuccia Prada — along with my own friends are also very inspiring. What makes you laugh? My gorgeous four grandchildren. They say and do such delightful things. Time with friends — we always end up laughing — John Cleese, The Goons, and Are you being Served? What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Do what you can, with what you have, where you are — I always thought it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said this, but apparently it was Theodore. What is on your to-do list for 2017? My daughter-in-law is having a special birthday in Paris next year, which is where she is from, so the family is planning a trip over there, then we will go to Denmark, which is where I am from, and have a big family reunion there! What suburb do you live in? Herne Bay. In your opinion, what was the best part of Verve’s ‘Beauty through the Ages’ photo shoot? Within a couple of hours of being with a room full of women I hadn’t met before, we had a great connection and were having lots of fun together doing the shoot. There really is beauty through the ages and I think the women on the shoot embrace life at whatever stage they were at. Anna Grete wears Vintage clothing and slides from SEED.

Jess

Rosie

What do you do? I’m a full time student in my last semester at the Auckland University of Technology studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in event management. I also work part time as a receptionist at BodyTech Gym in Grafton, and am a finalist in Miss Auckland 2016.

What do you do? Endeavour to create mostly.

What do people think you do? Watch The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones 24/7. There are so many cliff hangers! When someone ask what shows I watch I can talk about them for years. Use three words to describe yourself? Bubbly, sassy, quirky. What is something you have tried, but will never do again? Bungee jump – OMG, what an experience! Will definitely not do it again though! From where/whom do you draw inspiration for your clothing/the way you would like to dress? Definitely Pinterest. It’s filled with so much inspiration. What I love to do is type in ‘redhead outfits’, and it pops up with so many different amazing colors to suit me. It’s the one thing I struggle with, choosing the right colour for my light skin tone and red hair, I’ve learnt to never go black and white and always go color! What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives. What is the one place in the world you wish you lived in? In 2013 I lived in Norway for four months with my dad. I don’t think there is any place that compares to how stunning it is there. I would love to go back! What is on your to-do list for 2017? Travel and explore somewhere new. I’m thinking America could be my next pit stop. In your opinion, what was the best part of Verve’s ‘Beauty through the Ages’ photo-shoot? The best part was how much fun we had together. It felt more like a girls’ day out, getting our makeup and hair done, learning some ballet moves along the way. And of course the clothes, everyone looked incredible in these shades, I’m defiantly going to add more of this colour into my wardrobe! Thanks so much Verve! Jess wears a Promise Me in Ivory dress from MISS CRABB.

What is your philosophy on life? Live in the present and try not to stress over the small stuff. From where/whom do you draw your inspiration — whether it be clothing or design? From everything around me, movies, magazines, art, internet, street fashion....whatever. Do you have a beauty regime? I use exactly the same products each day; not necessarily top of the line. What is something you have tried, but will never do again? Ride a bike on the road; I think the idea that cars and bikes share the same space is absurd. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Treat other people as you like to be treated. What is the one thing you did in your past that you wish you could undo? Giving away my beautiful 70s Scandinavian cutlery — which I have never been able to replace. What is on your to-do list for 2017? To see my youngest son and his beautiful fiancé get married. In your opinion, what was the best part of Verve’s ‘Beauty through the Ages’ photo-shoot? Meeting and playing dress ups with some very lovely girls. Rosie’s wears a top from WITCHERY and pants from MISS CRABB.

The stunning New York loft style space in which these photographs were taken is Amber’s Barre Yoga studio. Located in the Saatchi and Saatchi building on The Strand in Parnell, Barre Yoga offers a selection of classes to build strength, fitness and flexibility, and at times to fit in with your daily demands. Amber is well-being personified, and looks forward to sharing her knowledge of fitness, dance, barre and yoga with you.

Amber How did you discover yoga? I picked up a 1960s paperback by Richard Hittleman from a secondhand bookstore when I was 13 and systematically taught my self the postures until years later I received proper training. How did it change you and what does it mean on a personal level? Yoga has always been an active meditation. I find it hard to sit still, and have a driven personality. Yoga helps me to confront myself within a posture. Within the movement, I have learnt to find stillness and a sense of integration of mind and body. Discovering how to use my breath effectively changed my whole experience of yoga, and after all these years, I still keep learning about myself and the world through my yoga practice. Can you tells us about your overseas experiences? Yoga has been a way to sustain and support myself as a professional dancer and choreographer in Europe. As a yoga student, however, the most memorable was a teacher in Vienna who was an ashtanga teacher. He helped me to discover that the limitations I felt I had about what my body could do was literally in my mind. Somewhere between German and English and Sanskrit I found a mental language to overcome physical boundaries. It was also in Vienna that I first started teaching barre and played around with combining barre and yoga, teaching in the John Harris Gym chain. Another very profound development came in studying and working with Power Living Yoga in Sydney. Their training and discipline with both philosophy and anatomy for yoga led to a more honest and real approach to teaching or facilitating a class.

Can anyone take part in a barre session? Barre is for everyone. I have created a syllabus using dance technique that is taught by professional dancers and in a really safe and practical way for all body types. As in yoga, each body has its own journey of development in barre, and we teach from the ground up. Our Barre 101 class is great place to start. What are the main points of difference? Professional dancers as teachers giving knowledgable sound technical assistance, integrated use of breath through yoga principles, a beautiful New York loft style studio, and a world-class sound system with DJ beats and innovative and varied class syllabus. Are men put off by the dance aspect? At the moment it’s 85% females, however, this is changing, especially with my Warrior Class which is super strong and gets guys to develop different muscle groups to complement their sports. Also, the men love the Yoga Flow classes. At the end of the day, what girl doesn’t want to be graceful with sculpted lean muscles? So yes, majority ratio will remain in favour of the girls, I imagine. What makes a good yoga instructor? Experience, and anatomical knowledge. Also, a way to inspire others though though their own personal journey with yoga. You have to be very honest when you teach and allow others to feel an opening within themselves. Last, but not least, love teaching. Amber wears a Silk Yem Top from WIXII and shorts from WITCHERY.

What do you do? I’m an established and published artist, I have been painting for the last 20 years and love it. What do people think you do? I often get asked if I’m a fashion designer or stylist. Describe yourself in three words? Vibrant, compassionate and glamorous. Where do you draw your inspiration from for your clothing? My biggest inspiration has to be Iris Apfel, I love her unique and quirky sense of style and combinations of prints, textures and jewelry. She dances to her own tune, so to speak, which resonates with the artist in me. Do you have a beauty regime? I use Aspect products. In the morning I use the Aspect cleanser followed by Active C serum and Resveratrol moisturising cream and SP suncreen, and at night I use Aspect cleanser followed by Exfol A plus serum and Resveratrol moisturising cream. What makes you laugh? Someone who has a great sense of humour combined with expressive body language and facial expressions to match, the antics animals get up to, and movies. What is your philosophy on life? Be kind, caring and loving towards others. Have fun and enjoy every moment, however big or small. Don’t let fear hold you back from trying new things, don’t judge others and don’t sweat the small stuff. Make the most of every opportunity, but above all stay true to yourself. What quirky habit do you have? I have a high heels fetish. Can’t walk past a store without being tempted to buy a pair. What is the one place in the world you wish you lived in? I was born and raised in Holland and have travelled to many countries, but I absolutely love living here in Auckland.

Daniella

What was the best part of the Verve’s ‘Beauty through the Ages’ for you? I had so much fun with all the amazing people on set. I loved being part of a team of people, the other models, make up artists, hairdressers, stylists, photographers and the lovely Verve crew. I especially loved seeing how the vision and concept for this shoot came together so beautifully on film. Daniella is wearing a dress from MISS CRABB and a Vintage coat.

What is something you have tried, but will never do again? Internet dating. I was fortunate to meet my husband online and I’m hoping he sticks around. From where/whom do you draw inspiration for your clothing/the way you would like to dress? Celine/Phoebe Philo and Robin Wright in House of Cards. What makes you laugh? New Yorker cartoons, Trevor Noah on The Daily Show, and my husband.

Nadine

What do you do? I am the mother of two sensational little girls, and a writer. Do you have a beauty regime? My daughters are three and five. So, no. I’m lucky if I get a chance to wash my hair and slap on sunscreen, moisturiser and a little blush. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? My aunt Jo always says: “Life is short, but it’s also long.” It’s a reminder to me to live for the moment, to tread with care and to have faith that there is still a whole lot of life yet to be lived. What is the one thing you did in your past that you wish you could undo? I worked in New York for most of my 30s and missed a lot of my friends’ weddings. What is on your to-do list for 2017? Learning jujitsu and renting a hotel room in the city during the Auckland Writer’s Festival so that I can attend everything I want to see. It’s world-class. Where do you get your morning coffee? 4&20 Bakery on Clonbern Road, Remuera In your opinion, what was the best part of Verve’s ‘Beauty through the Ages’ photoshoot? Colour coordinating with a border collie. Nadine wears a Solar Silk Slip Dress and a Minky Basic Silk & Cotton Tee both from WIXII.

Knowing Yoga While the physical – and, many may add, spiritual – benefits of yoga have long been known (think lower blood pressure, increased strength and denser bones), there is an ever growing body of scientific research that the practice, along with mediation, may actually rewire our brains and enable us to better think. A study published last April in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease by researchers at California University pitted two groups against each other: the first group undertook a wellknown brain-training programme, while the other took up up yoga and meditation. While both groups benefited from greater mental dexterity, brain scans showed the yoga group also gained better mental health, with improvements in such things as mood and visuospatial memory – which is important for balance and depth perception. The yoga group also saw greater gains in their language and communication skills. While the brain-training program was food for thought, the yoga training was a veritable feast. Dr. Helen Lavretsky, a professor of psychiatry at U.C.L.A., who oversaw the study, admitted that her team were surprised by the magnitude of the effects. Yoga was born in the north of India more than 5,000 years ago, and has been mentioned in ancient Hindu texts. It was soon incorporated into Jain and Buddhist philosophies, but, for thousands of years, the practice was less concerned with poses, and more with finding inner peace through mediation and sensory withdrawal. And it was only practised by religious men. The oldest known yoga manual was written 1,500 years ago by a sage know as Patanjali, and his methods were developed by various disciples of the practice throughout the ages. Yoga poses are known as asanas, and some centuries-old texts name there to be upwards of eight million of them – one for every animal species on Earth. Among the most well-known and widely used ones today are ‘downward dog’, ‘crow’, ‘cobra’, and ‘pigeon’. Before you even get to those, however, it can be just as confusing just trying to decide which type of class to attend, so Verve caught up with some Auckland yogis to find out more...

Rebeckh Burns, Owner of Hot Work Yoga Studio Favoured Yoga: Bikram — How did you discover yoga?

I began doing meditation when I was younger, then studied naturopathy and the philosophy of yoga, and metaphysics. Later, I wrote a book about meditation, which was published by HarperCollins Australia, and I wrote for some magazines. After taking a break to raise my kids, I began practising Bikram, and combined with my studies, began to realise that it brings people present very quickly – which is the whole point of yoga. I did my teacher training in San Diego. The opportunity just arose to open this studio, I wasn’t planning on it, and it’s been incredible.

How is Bikram different?

Hatha yoga [the most common] uses 84 main poses and Bikram Choudhury [Bikram yoga founder] took the 26 postures which are most suitable for any body type. Then he added the heated room, because, aside from the fact it is hot in India, it is helpful in allowing the muscles to relax, reducing the risk of injury, while also enabling detoxification benefits. It also makes you focus

on your pose, because if you don’t focus then you become obsessed with the heat and the environment, you’re all in your head, your monkey mind. The trick is to breathe and focus on your postures and alignments and forget about everything else.

Do your kids practise?

We do have 60-minute sessions, but most are 90. The 90-minute sequence is the same the world over, so you can go to any studio and know that you will have your foundational practice.

I really encourage kids to practise yoga, and the sooner the better! Of course, you have to watch the heat, so generally they will practise in a normal room. Each child has different constitutions. My son can easily go into a Bikram class and did so at the age of six. My daughter has not been ready to practice in the heated room. I also teach at their school as part of their PE lesson.

Can anyone practise Bikram?

Tell us about the One Fire festival you recently attended?

We have yin classes here and also an intermediate and advanced series. We require people to have done their foundation with the beginners series before inviting them to advanced or intermediate class to reduce the risk of injury. The Bikram foundation practice concentrates on strength and flexibility, it’s a great base for all yoga. People who have never done yoga before receive amazing benefits.

Do many men visit the studio?

Yes, it’s around 40%. Bikram is especially popular with men because it’s so physical, and it heals injuries. We have a lot of runners for example because they still get the endorphin-hit of going for a run. It’s also perfect for those who work long hours and are in need that mind-body connection. It is for everybody, we have every different walk of life and really, anyone can do it.

It’s an international yoga festival held in Joshua Tree, California, and lasts for five days. Joshua Tree is incredible, so spectacular visually and energetically, too. It’s a vortex of positive vibration. I was invited to speak about the best practices for a studio, and how to run a successful yoga business.

And what’s key?

Obviously you must love what you do. I enjoy the environment so much, it’s not even like going to work. Everyone else here feels the same. I made a decision to be a yogi first, and that comes before anything else. You can forget why you start a businesses. It’s very difficult to teach others something you are not doing, enjoying, or practising yourself. You never stop learning with yoga. It’s a lifelong path and you just have to enjoy the journey instead of getting caught up in all the details.

Gitavali Fisk, Yoga Instructor at the Loft Favoured Yoga: Hatha 36 HEALTH, BEAUTY & WELLNESS Sep 2016

— How did you discover yoga?

Back in 1998 I started getting interested in Eastern thought. I took a class at college called ‘An Intro to Hatha Yoga’. Over the next few years I practised here and there for fun, mainly sun salutations, and I loved it. It made me feel light, strong and energetic. Later, I started coming to the Loft and developed a real interest in wanting to share my love of yoga with others.

How did yoga change you?

Growing up, I wasn’t a very active girl. As a young child I was diagnosed with scoliosis (curvature of the spine) so my body was pretty stiff but when I found yoga it made me feel so relaxed and more supple. Yoga has a way to make you look deep inside of yourself and go beyond the mental boundaries that we place upon ourselves. It gave me a sense of empowerment that I can be healthy, strong and happy.

Have you studied yoga abroad?

I practised in Montreal, where I’m originally from, and did my teacher training in Melbourne. I started off learning about hatha yoga. Then I was inquisitive about a stronger yoga style: ashtanga, which is a more rigorous training, but my heart came back to my roots in hatha. It is more suited to my personality: spontaneous, fun and fluid.

Should yoga be approached as a spiritual or physical endeavour?

Yoga in essence these days is practised as a physical endeavour to strengthen the body, become more supple, and to help the mind focus in the present. You become more peaceful, free of stress. Yoga means to link or connect. Traditionally, it was a spiritual practice meant to focus the mind and connect with the supreme source, by practising physical postures. It was a form of discipline. But, these days, we have taken the spiritual aspect out of the picture and just focus on the physical benefits, which still has its place. The benefits indeed are numerous.

What makes a good yoga instructor?

It varies from person to person. What I’ve found over the years is that people will come back to a yoga teacher they admire. One who inspires his or her students to become better versions of themselves, not only on the mat but off of it as well. Good yoga teachers have a great presence, a sense of humour and the ability to connect with their students.

What do you wish more people knew about yoga?

No matter what your age or fitness level, you can do yoga. It’s not a competition. And it’s not just for women. My cousin once told me that she quit after one session because it was too painful the following day. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I call it ‘growing pains’. Yoga allows you to go deeper, push boundaries that you never thought possible, and feel really good. We have to be patient with ourselves, be kind to our bodies. Too much pressure is not good but taking it too lightly will prevent you from moving forward. In essence, if you have tried yoga and didn’t like it the first time, maybe seek out a teacher who you can relate to and who inspires you. Don’t give up. The benefits of yoga – whether physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual – are too worth it to miss out.

How does the Loft differ from other studios?

What I love about the Loft is that it not only offers a different range of physical yoga classes but also introduces people to a meditation practice, kirtan yoga, which is the chanting of mantras to music. There are also philosophical discussions on genuine happiness based on the ancient yoga texts. And one of the best thing is that every time you come to an event at the Loft, you get a delicious vegetarian dinner cooked with love. Discover a taste of bhakti yoga – the yoga of devotion. Interview with Amber Stevens, Owner of Barre Yoga, on Page 34. — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

More Yoga at a Glance Restorative yoga:

A fine choice for beginners, or those nursing a niggle. This practice is all about relaxing and restoring calm to the body and mind.

Ashtanga yoga: A yoga that’ll get a sweat on, poses are held for just five breaths and changed at pace.

Vinyasa flow: Not for beginners. As the name suggests,

expect much movement and little time for teacher chatter. You need to know your moves for this one.

Iyengar yoga:

Known for its use of aides such as belts, blocks and bolsters, Iyengar concentrates on the nuances of each pose to make sure the posture’s perfect. Another good one for beginners.

Beauty? It’s All Down to Chemistry The job title ‘chemist’ conjures up all sorts of intriguing imagery, but it’s a profession that many may wonder what it is they actually do. “I do sometimes too!” laughs chemist Warwick Kiely. “It’s an art and it’s a science. A lot of effort and a lot of thought goes into making each product.” The products in question are of the beauty kind. Warwick is founder and a director of The Cosmetics Company, a certified organic toiletry manufacturer, and the only one of its kind in New Zealand. (Incidentally, Warwick’s wife is a chemist of sorts, but her concoctions are of the culinary kind – she’s cookbook author Allyson Gofton.) “Most of the big international companies like L’Oreal and Elizabeth Arden all have their own manufacturing plants,” says Warwick. “I used to work for a similar big brand many years ago, and they all had their own plants here but that changed in the 80s and 90s. They moved out and it created a vacuum which allowed smaller companies to begin selling niche skincare ranges.” However, many of these set-ups lack the skill, experience or equipment to craft their wares, and that’s where Warwick and his team come in. “Generally, a brand will come to us with a marketing concept,” says the chemist. “They tell us how they want it to perform and the key ingredients they want to use, then it is over to our technical team to design a formulation which meets those requirements.” Ingredients, says Warwick, vary greatly depending upon the desired product. He most enjoys crafting organic goods because not only is the result the most rewarding, but the process is often the most challenging too. Stem cells are becoming a popular ingredient and there is much interest in skin whitening for a more youthful look. While New Zealand has some “wonderful native plant extracts” such as avocado and kiwi fruit, most ingredients are imported.

“We sometimes have people come to us and say they don’t want any chemicals, but everything that exists in the world is composed of chemicals,” says Warwick. “Technically, there’s no such thing as chemical-free. People say they don’t want nasty things like parabens which have had much bad press, most of which is unsubstantiated and even wrong.” To compete with the big beasts of the industry, he adds, brands need a point of difference, with the all-natural angle being the most popular. “There are many fallacies about what is good and what is bad,” Warwick says. “Palm oil is a good example. There is the issue about cutting down rainforests, so people prefer coconut oil as it is seen as more ethical. But, to get the same amount of coconut oil you need to have about two-and-a-half times the amount of land as palm to grow it.” Warwick poetically describes the process of his work as “taking his customers’ dreams and creating the perception of reality”. “We have to make sure that what we manufacture is safe and effective,” he adds. “There is so much science behind it.” Once the product is developed and has been accepted by the client, his company then also manufactures and packages it. On top of his three chemists, Warwick employs a further 30 people and soon they’ll be moving into a gleaming purpose-built state-of-the-art stainless steel and glass lab, the site of a former pharmaceutical firm. “Being able to employ so many people is a big thing for me,” he says. “There are exciting times ahead.” — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

They’ve made yoga cool. — Kristina Cavit

41

Paying It Forward

Former Young New Zealander of the Year finalist Kristina Cavit sure likes to keep herself busy, but thanks to her yoga training, mentality and lifestyle, her jam-packed existence is one that remains relatively stress-free. Now she’s helping others to better mental, physical and spiritual health. “I didn’t realise I was an anxious person,” says Kristina. “I always thought I was relaxed. I began to realise that I was workaholic who gained self-worth through my work. Mindfulness has helped me to let go of that. To come back to what really matters.” With that in mind, Kristina has founded the Kindness Institute, “a not-for-profit organisation that incorporates mindfulness, the work of Byron Katie, and yoga to cultivate a less distracted, more productive mind”. The project consists of two parts. The first comprises private wellness workshops for corporate groups and individuals, the proceeds from which then fund the second part, a social enterprise which incorporates similar workshops for marginalised youth. “We do mindfulness and yoga-based programmes with the youth to help them with whatever is going on with their lives,” says Kristina. “We just finished a pilot program in a high school where we worked with 25 kids who had been identified as the most lively students in need of support.” She’s recently been invited to do the course in prisons, too. Kristina says that the yoga and mindfulness helps the kids “build inner resources for life skills”, so that they may better deal with inner and external conflict and make more positive life decisions: “Many of those kids lead very chaotic lives. This enables them to go somewhere to get positive messages about loving themselves, and to just be still.” The programme is partly inspired by the work of the Holistic Life Foundation, an organisation established in one of Baltimore’s most deprived areas which has successfully used yoga and mediation to transform the community. Kristina has visited the US to learn from the group first-hand. “These guys went away to college on athletic scholarships and when they came back they found their community destroyed, so many people in prison or killed,” she says. “Two of them had a godfather who was a yogi and he helped them develop a course which is now used in a number of schools, inspiring kids to take a different path to drugs and crime. They’ve made yoga cool.”

And what is the reaction of the kids you work with here? “We do pre- and post-evaluations of their stress and anxiety levels, and most when asked in the first interview what they know about yoga usually just say ‘stretching!’ At first, they have no idea what it’s all about, but we really focus on creating a safe and comfortable space for them to learn.” Interestingly, Kristina has observed that it is often those with the most challenging behavioural issues who not only benefit most, but also become the most passionate about their new path. “There’s one kid who is known by his teachers to always be bouncing off the walls, and always getting into trouble because of his anger issues. He’s turned out to be one of the most focussed to the extent that he’s even teaching the younger kids in school, as well as his family, yoga and mindfulness techniques.” Kristina has always been interested in the philosophies. Following a couple of years’ running the charitable trust NPH New Zealand in the Dominican Republic and Haiti following on from the 2010 earthquake, she enrolled in a local ashram. “After those two years, I felt I needed some calmness,” she says. “I think that the ashram really saved me. The yogis taught me about the importance of identifying stressful thoughts and how to let them go.” Back in New Zealand, Kristina did yoga teacher training and discovered the work of Byron Katie: “I checked out her stuff online and discovered that the themes were the same as those the yogis taught me. I got really into her work, visiting the US to train with her. Her teaching on self-enquiry greatly influence our work at the Kindness Institute.” Mindfulness’ entry into the mainstream is more than a fad, and for good reason. “You see the scientific research and it’s a nobrainer,” says Kristina. “Work by people such as Jon KabatZinn at the University of Massachusetts – I’ve trained on his programme too – have shown how benefits include the slowing down of the ageing process and the prevention of the thinning of the brain with age. The world has changed so much, and it is hard to sit and be still. We are always connected, always on the move, but it is when we are present in what we are doing that we are happiest.” — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Your FutureSkin What if you could discover exactly how your skin is genetically destined to age? Acclaimed skin care therapist Louise Gray and her team have done just that with their bespoke FutureSkin DNA Programme. This is a new approach to antiageing and a complete beauty game-changer.

HOW THE FUTURESKIN DNA PROGRAMME WORKS Your plan is divided into three parts:

1.

DISCOVER your skin’s future and unlock your FutureSkin DNA Programme — a quick swab on the inside of your cheek is all it takes.

2.

NURTURE your skin with the personalised four-step antiageing programme.

3.

ACHIEVE the best possible anti-ageing results based on your genetic profile.

Using the results of your personal DNA test your skin’s genetic health and vulnerability are identified in five key areas of skin ageing.

DISCOVER The five indicators which contribute to your overall score out of 100 are: • Firmness and elasticity — the speed of collagen production and the rate at which it breaks down. • Wrinkling (glycation) — glycation occurs when glucose binds with your collagen and elastic fibres to form abnormal chemical bridges. These abnormalities then lead to tissue damage known as glycation. • Sun damage and pigmentation — your skin remembers every single bit of sun you’ve ever had. Scary thought. The cumulative effect of repeated sun damage causes skin DNA impairment, inflammation and oxidative stress. • Free radical damage (oxidation) — free radicals are highly reactive short-lived molecules that can damage almost

any molecule in our body. The amount of antioxidants in your body is directly proportional to the healthy long term appearance of your skin. • Sensitivity and inflammation — your genetic predispositions play a big role in determining the supply, or over supply of inflammation product. Your scores allow Louise and her team to optimise your FutureSkin DNA programme according to your genetic strengths and weaknesses. NUTURE Your personalised anti-ageing programme is made up of a skincare prescription, advanced skincare treatments, supplements and lifestyle advice all based on your genetic blueprint. Futureproofing your skin from every angle! Not only are you well equipped with clinical facials and skincare tailored to your needs, including a morning and evening beauty routine, but you’ll also receive dietary and lifestyle advice based on your risk levels for each of the five indicators. ACHIEVE We would recommend the FutureSkin DNA programme for anyone who’s looking for a more specialised, personalised and targeted approach to skincare. If you’re after structured, long-term, results-driven skincare — specifically designed with genetics and anti-ageing in mind — then this is the only place you need to look! Words: Louise Gray

The Lowdown on Injectable Fillers You’ve probably heard the buzz about dermal injectable fillers, but there’s a lot of misinformation out there. Forget ‘trout pouts’ and ‘frozen faces’, in the right hands injectable fillers are far subtle than that. We got together with Dr Ellen Selkon of Clinic 42 to bring you the lowdown.

— Dermal refers to the outer layer of your skin — Are fillers the same as Botox?

No, fillers are definitely not the same as Botox or Dysport (Botox is a brand name; Dysport is simply another brand). Fillers are used to replace volume that has been lost with the ageing process or to define features. They’re often used to lift parts of the face as well and can be used in the so-called ‘liquid facelift’. Botox or Dysport, on the other hand, are used to decrease lines and wrinkles, to slim a square face to create a more oval shape or for the treatment of excessive sweating.

What type of fillers do you find to be best for results and longevity?

Hyaluronic acid (aka hyaluronan) fillers such as Restylane or Emervel are excellent and have been on the market for many years. They have a low complication rate but give good longevity lasting anywhere from 6-18 months depending on where they are placed.

Hyaluronic acid (HA)

is not an ‘acid’, but a fluid sugar found naturally in the human body. HA has the ability to combine with water and ‘swell’ — holding many times its own weight in water. Commonly used in moisturising skincare, it’s highly regarded for its plumping and hydrating qualities. The HA used in dermal fillers is usually man-made and created in a petrie dish in a laboratory.

Where can fillers be used?

In almost any area of the face, hands, neck or décolletage. We treat foreheads, temples, eyes, cheeks, lips, jowls, chins, jaw lines, necks and chests.

How long do they typically last?

Six to nine months in the lips, which have a lot of movement, and up to two years in a ‘non-mobile’ area such as under the eyes.

What should a person look for if they decide to get fillers?

It’s important to thoroughly research the clinic and doctor or nurse you are considering visiting. They should be qualified and have suitable experience in the cosmetic medicine environment. It’s a good idea to ask to see before and after photos to get an idea what you can expect from a treatment. A comprehensive consultation with the practitioner is a must prior to any treatment.

What results can people expect?

A good injecting professional will give subtle but rejuvenating results that are harmonious with the rest of a persons face and features. This includes your profile. Your forehead, nose, cheeks, lips and chin should all be in proportion with one another.

How important is the practitioner a person chooses?

Extremely important. Unfortunately, as fillers are widely used, there are untrained individuals setting up shop. The New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine has a website listing all of their qualified members: nzscm.co.nz.

Is there a risk of mistakes with treatment?

Yes, so it’s important you fully understand all the potential complications and side effects prior to having a procedure. It’s also why where you choose to go is crucial. The more experienced a practitioner is, the less chance of problems.

If I undergo treatment will I look like I’ve had something done?

You should not look ‘done’, but refreshed and rejuvenated. Unfortunately the media loves to show the horror stories, but in reality you’ll usually be none the wiser to the subtle rejuvenation that the everyday person such as your child’s teacher or your neighbour undergoes.

DON’T PUT OFF SEEING YOUR DENTIST “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” — Benjamin Franklin

An absence of symptoms does NOT necessarily mean everything is okay in your mouth. Gum disease often shows no symptoms until in an advanced stage; tooth decay might not hurt until a nerve gets infected and there is an abscess. Today, more and more people get to keep all their teeth for their entire lives, but it does take long-term solutions and preventative treatments.

Good oral hygiene has amazing health benefits and can prevent so much, including: Low Confidence

— a great smile gives you confidence. And studies show it can even influence how successful you are in your personal and professional lives.

Heart Disease — according to studies, oral inflammatory disease can increase the risk of heart disease. This is because extended bacterial exposure, which causes gum disease, can increase inflammation throughout the body. Diabetes — it is known that people with diabetes have more

gum disease but now there is a suggestion the converse may be possible too, that gum disease may contribute to a person getting a type of diabetes.

Poor Nutrition — of course, teeth are used to break down food.

So, if pain prevents you from eating properly, you can end up poorly nourished.

What’s stopping you from visiting your dentist? • Is it fear of what may be found out? • Is it the cost? • The state of your neglected teeth? These concerns are common to so many of us. At Parnell Dentistry, we value you and your teeth and want to reduce the hurdles preventing you from having the best oral health possible. If necessary we can even advise you on making your treatment more affordable using our payment plan. Taking the step to a dentist can be a real relief — a weight off your shoulders. Don’t put it off — we’re here to help you.

ARE YOU LIVING ON THE STRESS EXPRESS? We all have moments of stress in our lives. Our bodies are designed to cope with small bursts of stress. It’s a natural response to a perceived danger that fuels our body with the necessary resources to get ourselves out of that danger and into safety.

But what happens when we feel stressed all the time?

I like to call this the “stress express” and too many people these days find themselves trapped on it.

What is the “stress express”?

Stress is ultimately tied to our nervous system, specifically the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), the ‘fight of flight’ system, but it also involves our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), the ‘rest and repair’ arm. When the nervous system perceives that we are under threat— which in modern times can be due to caffeine consumption and/or our perception of pressure and urgency—the SNS raises our heart rate, increases our respiratory rate, releases stress hormones (adrenalin and cortisol) and diverts blood away from the digestive tract to our muscles so that we can run away from, or fight, whatever is threatening us. The SNS and the PNS are designed to balance each other. The PNS slows our heart rate and respiration, and brings blood back to the digestive system so that we can digest our food. It also signals to the body that it can focus on doing all the other important jobs it has, like producing sex hormones and repairing any tissues that have been damaged in our ‘battle’.

What are some signs that we are on the “stress express”?

• You regularly feel stressed or as though you are on high alert • You crave sugars and/or carbohydrates • You struggle to lose weight—no matter what you try • You’re regularly bothered by digestive complaints • You regularly sleep poorly and wake up feeling tired • You feel anxious easily • You struggle to say “no” • If you’re a woman in menstruation years you experience PMS • You feel like everything is urgent and there aren’t enough hours in the day • You are a worrier or a drama queen (or king) • You love coffee, energy drinks—anything that contains caffeine • You feel that if you don’t do it, it won’t get done

How do we get off the “stress express”?

The key to getting ourselves off the “stress express” is to activate our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The answer to this could lie solely in your caffeine habits. It’s also useful to explore your perception of pressure and urgency—check whether you apply the same amount to going through your inbox as you do when you have to suddenly slam your brakes on while driving. You might also like to explore how comfortable you are saying “no”. We are busy with what you say yes to. Some practices that also help us to actively activate the PNS are yoga or restorative yoga, pilates, tai chi, qi gong or meditation practice. A breathfocused practice such as taking 20 long, slow, diaphragmatic breaths every morning before getting out of bed, and every evening before falling asleep can also be highly beneficial. Dr Libby’s new book Women’s Wellness Wisdom is now available from all good bookstores, she is also speaking across the country during October with her From Surviving to Thriving tour. More information and tickets at drlibby.com

When we live our lives ultimately SNS dominant, we end up on the “stress express” and this creates myriad of problems for us.

She lets out a laugh that would put anyone at ease, saying “cut me off if I ramble,” being someone who obviously has a lot to say. I ask her whether or not she was always this confident and she explains how, as she got older, she came to terms with what had happened and started to feel more insecure: “I’d always hide away. I’d bring track pants to hide my leg.” However, her friends would encourage her to put on shorts: “‘You’ll look amazing,’ they urged, so I started to wear shorts more and more and now I don’t hide a thing.” Others’ support has helped Jess, but she makes a point of saying that confidence is something that has to come from within. She found through exercise and fashion that she was able to feel more herself: “I loved going into a gym and being absolutely myself.” As for fashion, Jess says she used to wish that she could wear heels, but has now developed a unique style as a result: “My style has come from my adversity. I’m really into streetwear. I like being casual all the time. That style has definitely come from what I’m comfortable wearing.” It seems so obvious, but nonetheless something that we all forget, that we feel more confident doing and wearing things that make us feel most ourselves. It has also been affirming for Jess to discover just how much she can positively influence others: “I just thought, ‘Wow, I can actually have an impact on people’s lives and I didn’t even know.’” She says that she feels she has come at a perfect time, when people are tiring more and more of the media and the negative effects it has on our self-esteem by making us constantly compare ourselves to others: “Everyone’s really over it.” Jess will no doubt keep showing us how we can define our own limits more than we thought, while running past those that others set for us. Follow her journey on Incogo (Being Limbitless) and Instagram (@jessicaemilyquinn).

Keeping it Real Nadine Rubin Nathan celebrates the coming of age of real women in fashion. About a month ago, I went to an Emilia Wickstead trunk show held by her mother Angela Wickstead. (Emilia is the New Zealandborn, London-based fashion designer excelling in the kind of elegant, ladylike femininity that turns the heads of the Duchess of Cambridge, Samantha Cameron and numerous other royals and celebs.) I walked in to the beautiful Remuera villa where Angela had set up shop with my friend S who is about 5’ 11”. Women aged between 35 and 70 sipped champagne and fingered the stunning fabrics that Emilia works with while a model in her early 20s walked among us wearing a high-neck, sleeveless, midnight blue dress with cutaway sides and an ankle-grazing A-line hemline in a weighty fabric. You needed to be about 5’11” to pull it off, but when I suggested S try it on, she immediately declared her shoulders too wide. The model disappeared and returned wearing a second dress, this one with billowing organza sleeves cinched at the wrists. When she lifted her arms the cuffs skidded up to her elbows. When I tried it on, I couldn’t lift my arms past 45-degrees and I immediately declared my forearms over-sized. I wondered, later on, if S and I would have been so critical of our own bodies had the model not been there. Ever since fashion magazines first appeared in England in the 1870s one of their most controversial aspects has been the singular idealised body ideal that they insist on. One study in 2012 found that just three minutes spent looking at a fashion magazine caused 70% of women to feel depressed, guilty and shameful. That’s a hard truth to swallow for someone like me who spent the nineties and the noughties working as an editor for fashion magazines like Elle and Harper’s Bazaar. For many of those years, though, whenever we asked women in focus groups if they wanted to see real women instead of models in the clothes, the answer was always a resounding ‘no’. But times, I’m happy to report, they are a-changin’. Before I moved to Auckland from New York, I witnessed my downstairs neighbour Nicolette Mason build a massive audience as a plus-size blogger that eventually saw her get her own column in US Marie Claire. When I arrived in Auckland in 2014, I was thrilled to see plus-size models at the first New Zealand Fashion Week that I attended. As Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, in particular, have grown in popularity, the ‘sexy selfie’ has ushered in a greater acceptance of real bodies. I think of it as the silver lining of our digital narcissism. In April this year AdWeek reported that, thanks to Instagram, “women who have for so long felt ignored by mainstream fashion

“Women who have for so long felt ignored by mainstream fashion are finally able to have a voice.”

are finally able to have a voice. They’re sharing body-positive selfies and hashtags, following plus-size bloggers like Nicolette Mason and GabiFresh… and letting brands know exactly what they think.” And certain fashion brands have seen a real spike in their profit margins when they’ve used real women to front their advertising campaigns (and let’s be honest, these days fashion advertising is as powerful as fashion editorials). AdWeek used Iskra Lawrence, the 25-year-old British model best known for appearing in Aerie’s famously unretouched #AerieReal campaign, who commands an Instagram audience of over 1.7 million as an example. And now Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke are doing the same for New Zealand lingerie label Lonely, fronting their latest add without a hint of photoshop. Along with posting body confident selfies, Iskra, Lena, Jemima use their social media accounts to encourage self-acceptance and fight back against body-shamers. Now that’s something worth celebrating.

STYLE JOURNEYS 64 FASHION Sep 2016

I’ve just spent the last week working in Christchurch for Westfield Riccarton. It’s been a really fun week. I have to say, one thing I love about working in Christchurch is how engaged people are. Christchurch women aren’t afraid of seeking advice. They’re keen to know what will work best for them and equally keen to put that advice into practice. As is always the case when I speak to loads of women (we did more than 250 mini style consultations), there’s usually some that stand out. This time, there were two women that I was still thinking about when I finally turned out the light at the end of my day. One who admitted that at 42, she had never thought about the way she dressed at all. She was really keen to see what I could tell her, but did say she felt “way out of her comfort zone”. This woman wasn’t by any means badly dressed or “scruffy” but she certainly wasn’t dressing to her full potential. I really enjoyed sharing some tips around dressing her shape, and giving her some fresh ideas to try. She excitedly left the lounge and went off to try on some new things, thanking me for my insights. The other woman who springs to mind was the opposite. Although she dressed fine, she too could have been a little more adventurous. This woman however, wasn’t quite so keen to embrace any new ideas. Instead she was “stuck” with what she wore. She also imagined figure flaws that truly didn’t exist. So,

for our session I felt powerless to help as she shut down any new possibilities due to her perceived body issues. She stayed on my mind as it saddened me that someone could be so stylistically trapped by his/her own distorted view. What these women had in common was that for both, what they wore didn’t add anything to their sense of self. If you’ve read any of my previous columns, you’ll know I believe that what we wear can have a huge impact on how we feel. So choose wisely – because you’ll never have a bad day wearing something that makes you feel great. If you’d like to get out of a rut or just get started on your style journey, I’d absolutely love to help. Why not give me a call on 09 529 5115 and come and meet me at my 330 Parnell Road studio for a coffee. Further information can be found on my website: signaturestyle.co.nz

Dove Hospice Shops

RETAIL THERAPY AT ITS BEST They’re the secret pleasure of Hollywood A-listers, fashionistas, rock stars and royalty. Second hand, recycled, pre-loved, thrift or op shops — whatever you call them, they’re a magnet for bargain hunters and a feel good solution for those wanting to support a worthy cause. With five retail stores in Auckland (Glen Innes, Epsom, Panmure, Remuera, St Heliers ), an in-house boutique and an e-site on Trade Me, Dove Hospice has taken charity shops to a whole new level. Opening day of the recently revamped St Heliers store saw sales records smashed and with an average turnover of over 5,000 donated items a month, it’s one of Dove’s most successful retail operations. Each Dove Hospice store is a treasure trove of good quality, preloved clothing, accessories, books and household goods. Designer shoes and handbags sit alongside antique silver and collectable china, retro furniture and limited edition artwork and books. Dove’s retail support co-ordinator Anne Comito says, “We’re so lucky to have the support of our Dove volunteers who work so hard in the stores and at the distribution centre. We’re also grateful to our local communities for the quality and quantity of the donations we receive. This helps to increase sales which mean more funds for our patient services, which is what we are all ultimately striving for. Dove Hospice receives no direct government funding and 95% of the costs of providing the Dove model of care are generated from the shops.” Julie McCarthy, executive director of Dove Hospice says, “Dove provides a unique and valuable service to patients and their families at a time of their greatest need. This is not just for people at the end of their life but for patients and families living with a life threatening illness, from diagnosis onwards. Our holistic model is available to people throughout the wider Auckland region, not just the Eastern Bays.” Each year money raised from the Dove Hospice stores helps fund over 6,000 interventions to patients and their families and over 1,000 inpatient care bed days for patients requiring end of life and respite care. If you would like to donate goods to support Dove Hospice please drop off at any store or call (09) 527 5064 to organise collection. For more information visit dovehospice.org.nz

24 Hours in

RAGLAN

I say “Raglan”, you say (actually, pretty much everyone says) “surfing”. But the best part about this charming beachside town is that there is so much more to experience than just ripping the world-famous waves. On the west coast of the North Island, just two hours south of Auckland, Raglan is a small and welcoming gem, boasting the very best of New Zealand’s relaxed coastal lifestyle. From native bush walks, to vintage and antique shopping, to peacefully enjoying the beautiful beaches, Raglan truly does have everything you need for a quick getaway from the stressful life of the city. SOLSCAPE — ACCOMMODATION You will be hard pressed to find accommodation more unique than Solscape, who are dedicated to sustainable living and maintaining a positive connection between humans and nature. Get the best of the pick by staying in the units with shared facilities: the Earth Domes, which have been constructed purely out of the generously available resource of ground earth; the Cabooses, beautiful up-cycled train carriages; or in the hugely popular Tipi Forest, which allows you to experience ‘glamping’ in its most peaceful form, in secluded tipis and belle tents. YOGA AT SOLSCAPE — 8:00AM Saturdays at Solscape begin with a yoga session of powerful and purifying techniques. Breathe your way into the new day with a clear mind and a focused soul. The 90-minute class is offered at just $15, and is held in a gorgeous yoga studio or, if the weather is kind, outside on the beautiful lawn.

THE CONSCIOUS KITCHEN — 9:30AM Still at Solscape, head to their café for a delicious breakfast of ethically sourced and created eco-cuisine. Everything is organic and plant-based, but don’t worry about feeling like you’re missing out on a hearty side of bacon or salmon with your eggs benedict, because everything from the delicious smoothies to the exceptional buckwheat pancakes will provide you with all the energy you need for the day. WAIRĒINGA FALLS/BRIDAL VEIL FALLS — 10:30AM Explore the surrounding countryside with a 20-minute drive to Wairēinga Falls/Bridal Veil Falls. Once there, it’s just a 20-minute return trip through native bush to get to the stunning waterfall, surrounded by an impressive amphitheatre of soft sandstone rocks. For an extra 20 minutes return, you can reach the pool at the base of the falls to find an amazing view back up at the cascading water. THE SHACK — 12:30AM Back in the township, pop into The Shack for lunch, one of Raglan’s most popular food joints. The menu is made primarily of locally sourced ingredients, and is ever-changing to keep up with the best of the season. The friendly staff give The Shack a buzzing atmosphere and the fantastic service for which they are renowned. Located on “the sunny corner of Bow Street and Wainui Road”, The Shack will give you a summery experience and a delicious lunch to boot.

RAGLAN FISH — 6:30PM What’s a trip to the seaside without fish and chips for dinner? Head to Raglan Fish for your classic Kiwi meal of a few dollars’ chips and the fish of the day, and rest assured that it will be as fresh as it gets. WILD ABOUT CANADA I am a regular visitor to Canada, and I rate the wildlife as exciting as anything you might encounter on safari in Africa. Whales, deer and wolves aside, you can’t ignore the impressive stature and variety of Canada’s bears. But, as they hibernate in winter, summer is obviously the time to go!

Lodge enjoys one of the few protected anchorages and is the perfect place to stay for bear-viewing. Also in Knight Inlet is the cosy and intimate Bones Bay Lodge. With only four rooms, Bones Bay is great for small groups or families.

Aloof and charismatic, fiercely territorial, the grizzly bear is at times frustratingly hard to find. Fortunately, they are guided by their stomachs and during the annual salmon run it is possible to see them gather in large numbers on the Pacific coast.

The Great Bear Rainforest is one of the best places in the world to observe grizzly bears along with black bears, grey wolves and bald eagles. From May to June, the bears come down from the mountains to graze on estuary grasslands, then from mid-August they gorge themselves on salmon pre-hibernation. Great Bear Nature Lodge is perfectly set in the heart of it all.

Black bears are common throughout Canada, and tend to like the solitude of the forest, but are at times lured into the towns by the prospect of an easy meal — aren’t we all! British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest and Alberta’s Rocky Mountains provide the best sightings between May and October. Kermode, or ‘spirit’ bears, are the rarest of all North American bears. Revered by First Nations people, they can only be found in a small corner of BC’s Great Bear Rainforest. Although white, they are actually black bears with a double recessive gene that gives them their lighter colouring. You may be lucky and see a bear by the roadside or railway track, but a stay at a wilderness lodge offers your best chance — here are a few of our favourites. AFLOAT IN THE WILDERNESS Floating lodges in remote wilderness are the way to go! Knight Inlet is a 100km-long fjord carved by glaciers in the coastal mountains of BC. This pristine wilderness is the native habitat of the grizzly bear. Every spring the bears come out of hibernation to gather on the banks of Glendale Cove eating sedge grasses, mussels and barnacles. Accessible by float-plane, Knight Inlet

FIRST NATIONS LODGES If you like to connect with the locals, Spirit Bear Lodge is a highly successful community-based ecotourism venture owned and operated by the local First Nation people. Here you can spot the very rare Kermode, or spirit bear. A TOUCH OF LUXURY Go ‘glamping’ at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort Deluxe Tent Outpost by the Bedwell River. With indulgent luxury and untamed wilderness, this enclave of white canvas suite tents, complete with antique furniture, never fails to delight. For a great mix of adventure and luxury, Nimmo Bay Resort offers helicopter excursions to remote hiking and fishing locations. Sonora Resort is simply gorgeous, and all about indulging in gourmet cuisine and its wellness spa in between your fly-fishing, wildlife and wilderness excursions. Seeing bears in the pristine Canadian wilderness is an experience of which I will never tire. Words: Sue Barnaby, Travel Designer at World Journeys

A SMALL GROUP HOSTED JOURNEY Pack your camera! Floatplane into Knight Inlet Lodge for thrilling bear viewing, enjoy whale watching in Tofino and explore Vancouver Island. This is Canada in the wild!

Cheats´ Mini Butter Croissants ~ Vegetarian

Ingredients • • •

3 sheets frozen puff pastry, defrosted 100g (3.5oz) unsalted butter, cut into cubes 1 egg and 1 Tbsp milk for brushing

To Serve • • • • •

Brie French raspberry preserve such as Bonne Maman Ham or cold cuts Fresh fruit, such as figs, grapes or strawberries

Method

Preheat the oven to 220°C and line two baking trays with baking paper. Roll out the dough and cut each sheet of pastry across the diagonals to give you four triangles. Dot cubes of butter on top of each triangle. Starting at the base of each triangle, loosely roll it upwards towards the tip. Place the finished croissants on the lined baking trays, curving them into crescent shapes. Brush with egg wash and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 190°C and bake for another 4-5 minutes, until they are evenly golden brown. Leave them on the tray to cook internally for another 10 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature with preserves, cheeses and cold cuts.

Mm MEXICO

79 FOOD

Huevos Divorciados Divorced Eggs ~ Gluten-free This colourful Mexican breakfast is called ‘divorced eggs’ because traditionally, there is a distinct line drawn between two fried eggs using tortilla chips, refried beans or chilaquiles. One egg is covered with ‘salsa roja’, a fiery red sauce and the other is topped with “salsa verde”, a cooling green sauce. They represent distinct and complementary (or in the case of divorce, probably conflicting!) flavours. Supplied by Beatnik Publishing, beatnikshop.com Photography: Vanessa Lewis // Serves 4

Ingredients

Method

Salsa Verde (Green Sauce)

Salsa Verde (Green Sauce) Place the coriander, garlic, pine nuts and Parmesan cheese into the bowl of a food processor and pulse until roughly chopped. While the motor is still running, gradually pour the oil as a thin stream into the processor until the ingredients come together to form a rough paste. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

• • • • •

Salsa roja (red sauce) 4 plum tomatoes, cored ½ onion, peeled 1 red or green chilli 60ml good-quality chicken stock (gluten-free if required) • salt and milled black pepper

• 80g (2.8oz) fresh coriander, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 50g (1.8oz) pine nuts, toasted • 3 Tbsp Parmesan cheese, finely grated • 125ml light olive oil or peanut oil • salt and milled black pepper

To Serve

• 4 x 15cm soft corn tortillas (gluten-free if required) • oil for shallow frying • 4-8 eggs

Salsa Roja (Red Sauce) Place the tomatoes, onion and chilli into a hot, dry pan and cook, charring on all sides, turning occasionally, for 5-7 minutes. Transfer the charred vegetables into a food processor. While the motor is still running, gradually add the chicken stock and process to form a smooth sauce. Pour the salsa back into the same pan and cook over a medium heat for 5-6 minutes or until the sauce turns bright red. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

To Serve

Fry the tortillas in a lightly-oiled pan for 30-45 seconds per side until they are crispy. Cover the cooked tortillas in foil to keep warm. In the same pan, fry the eggs until done according to your liking (I like them when the yolks have just set but are still soft). Season with sea salt. Place a warm and crispy tortilla onto a serving plate. Spoon a quarter of each sauce onto opposite sides of the tortilla and top each side with a fried egg. Serve immediately.

SACRED HILL

FOOD Sep 2016

Amidst the sudden resurgence of life, as plants once again burst into action, it’s worth grabbing your spade and getting stuck in. And the earlier the better! By starting now you save time later, as useful plants take up space where weeds would otherwise grow. It also gives your plants time to get happily settled in and healthy before summer.

Top Tasks

Preparing garden beds for planting. • Remove weeds and lightly aerate the soil with a fork. • Lightly mix in compost and sheep pellets. • Improve structure, add minerals and nutrients, and increase the number of beneficial bacteria and fungi in the soil by adding a few handfuls of Nature’s Organic Fertiliser.

At Sacred Hill the focus is on family. You will always meet one of the two Mason brothers or anyone of their dedicated employees at the cellar door led by the dynamic duo David or Mark. When they both started making wine more than 30 years ago, it was because they enjoyed a challenge and the determination and the passion to actually give it a go. Today, Sacred Hill is one of the most accomplished and successful award-winning wineries in the region. Following the success of the 2013 vintage, Sacred Hill have just released their special selection of red wines from the Gimblett Gravels Vineyard. Characterised by the richness and depth of flavour, the three wines each come with intense ripe fruit and a freshness that is the hallmark of great wines. Winemaker Tony Bish told me this year’s selection has an intense purity of flavour that epitomises grapes grown in Gimblett Gravels. On sampling each of these wines I quickly came to the conclusion that they are one of the most remarkable collections of red wines available. Tony Bish is the master blender having taken the best to create two exceptional blends.

Repair lawns (or create a new one)

Spring is one of the best times of year to sow grass seed.

Quick Guide

• Remove any weeds. • Lightly aerate with a fork, level and a add a light layer of Lawn Mix. • Sow seed. It helps to divide larger areas up into smaller sections to ensure even coverage. Sow half the seed left to right and the other half front to back. • Lightly cover with Lawn Mix. • Firm down (a plank of wood can be stood on to keep this smooth).

Veggies to plant

Directly sow carrots and parsnips into weed-free beds. Plant out seedlings of silverbeet, spinach, coriander, parsley, beans, and peas. In warmer spots or in greenhouses you can get away with growing tomatoes and peppers.

Flowers to plant

Aside from looking gorgeous, many of these flowers are great for bees (great for pollination) and beneficial for predator insects (who will munch on pests so that you don’t have to). Annuals (need replacing year to year) Petunias, pansies, alyssum, snapdragons, dianthus, lobelias, and marigolds. Perennials (last multiple years) Lavander, Calibrachoa, Nemesia, and Bubblegum Petunia. — Words: Billy Aiken

NATURAL BEAUTY This dreamy country house in Mallorca teams its idyllic location with an earthy yet contemporary design sensibility. The result? A genuinely relaxing space. Text: Robyn Alexander | Photos: Greg Cox

LEFT | A thatched shade ‘umbrella’, terracotta pots and a metal lantern add textural appeal to this sitting area adjacent to the pool. TOP | This petite private terrace is one of homeowner Brenda Ooteman’s favourite places at Osa Mayor.

All the bedrooms at Osa Mayor serve as showcases for homeowner Brenda Ooteman’s extensive collection of gorgeous bed linen and textiles. In the summertime, Brenda prefers to dress the beds with pure white linen (from Society: societylimonta.com) and ethereal mosquito nets. She’s also prone to adding a beautifully textured throw or two to the mix.

TOP | The interior walls at Osa Mayor have been plastered with tadelakt, a traditional Moroccan lime-based plaster that is polished by hand using stones, giving it a very individual and slightly imperfect finish. More texture is added here via ceramics and natural artefacts collected by homeowner Brenda Ooteman during her travels. BOTTOM | The final flight of stairs leads up to the house’s seventh bedroom.

LEFT | The lower ground floor, or basement level, of the house is furnished with upholstered built-in banquettes and designed for relaxing and reading. The textile wall hanging, throws, cushions and ceramics add earthy interest to the decor scheme. TOP | All the bedrooms (with one exception) have en suite bathrooms. Finishes, fittings and fixtures are kept simple and natural, enabling Brenda’s rustic furnishings and opulent textiles to stand out. BOTTOM | The narrow, sculptural staircase is a central design element, and also connects all four levels of the house to one another. To emphasise this, the Moroccan-style tadelakt plaster used on the wall behind the staircase has been coloured with a bold and dramatic purple-black pigment.

99 Once a nanny and then a client, she had seen it all. “When I used a nanny agency, it was really impersonal. I thought this is such an awesome opportunity to do things better by focussing more on working with the family’s needs as opposed to just rolling in the dollars.” Miss Poppins, her boutique nanny and babysitting agency was born in 2010 and for those that know her and Miss Poppins – they’re a God send. “I’ve always been a working Mum. I’ve got two boys myself” she says. You don’t need to look far to see that Shannon understands the pressures of her clients as she juggles the interview with a flurry of phone requests that were quickly dealt with professional aplomb. “I am passionate about what I’m doing. When our clients are looking for a nanny, we go the extra mile and keep hunting until we find the absolute right person who ticks all the boxes.” This immaculately dressed horse lover originally from Nga Tawa Diocesan School has created a thriving business with a significant proportion of corporate clients supported by 200 nannies on her books. “I assist a lot of locals in Herne Bay, Grey Lynn, and Ponsonby through to Whangaparaoa. A lot are CFOs or corporate women in a man’s world.” Shannon empathises. She sees how busy, demanding and the sacrifices that her clients make to be in and retain their positions. “I see a lot of that obviously, the hours that they’re working, the demands of career versus family – it must be mighty tough.” Miss Poppins offers a temporary, part-time full-time nanny service. It has working relationships with exclusive travel agents and luxury lodges such as Huka Lodge and Eagles Nest.

Q&A WITH

MISS POPPINS

“When we have international high net worth clients land in the country, our nannies have had the opportunity to fly down by helicopter to look after their families. Nannies have stayed at the Hilton for a week and flown all over with them – so there’s that glamour side to it.” Handling one-off onsite childcare needs to support corporate events, private birthday parties and work Christmas functions is another service offered by Miss Poppins. And the inspiration behind name of her business?

A role reversal led to a conscious decision by Shannon Ellison six years ago to help improve the lives of working Mums and families.

“When anyone thinks of Miss Poppins they think about childcare – a bubbly, caring, gorgeous lady that everybody loved.” Suffice to say Shannon and her qualified team embody just that.

KID’S FEATURE Sep 2016

100 KID’S FEATURE Sep 2016

When my five-year-old daughters joyously engrossed themselves in creating another ‘Pollock, Rothko or Monet’ Painting; perhaps the least intelligent comment I could make, was; “What is it?” It’s obvious to them what it is! Art comes naturally to children — so naturally that it’s easy to overlook its importance, especially for the child! When you’re raising curiously, creative, little people, art can really ‘rock’ for them, buoying their confidence! When kids are encouraged to freely express imagination in art, they develop a sense of innovation, an invaluable resource in their adult lives. Art teaches children how to interpret, criticise, and use visual information, and how to make choices based on it. It provides children with an alternative way to express their ideas, feelings and solutions. Watching children passionately creating art is enormously rewarding for parents who can appreciate the skills developing. I’ve photographed a large number of children painting and observed my own daughters’ efforts – the process is at least as impressive as the results. Whenever I see a young child facing a blank canvas, they don’t seem to experience the same doubts that assail an adult. They know what they are going to paint and once they feel they’ve finished, they put down their tools with conviction. They are done! They don’t need approval! A delightful and intriguing narrative will usually follow explaining the inspiration for the piece: “And that’s a door where the hedgehog goes through to see the whales and the sky has all strawberries in it and that looks like a tree but it’s really a picture of a tree that the hedgehog drew…” I always encourage a child to sign their piece. Child art is a pure form of Impressionism – they see with a clarity of vision that adults struggle to find, or to be comfortable with. Great artists understand this relationship instinctively. My good friend Sir Toss Woollaston once said to me; “I’m trying to paint with the simplicity of vision I had when I was five years old.” Picasso, too, was aiming for a child-like purity of expression: “Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up… It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” It’s true this youthful confidence can be hard to maintain. As a parent you can tangibly praise your child’s artwork by having it professionally framed, and hung in your home. This statement of pride and value for their work will make their heart glow. In my work I also see the value of framing photographs of your children. A portrait that has artistic integrity and authenticity, tells an instantaneous story about your child’s unique personality. A portrait that oozes ‘art’ is often commented on by friends and family, bolstering the child’s confidence immeasurably. I remember revisiting a long-time client/family when their young son took me by the hand to proudly show me a beautifully

CURIOUS, CREATIVE, CONFIDENT presented portrait of himself and his brother. “That’s me!” he said. It happened to be the very first of my award-winning pictures. I knew the image intimately, however he had not connected me to the picture. “Does Tom do this often? I asked his mum. “Yes,” she said, “he does that to everyone who comes to the house. He loves that picture!” A passion for art is something I’ve seen in my own daughters. I have a vivid memory of taking them to the Auckland Art Gallery when they were around five years old. As they entered the Julian Robertson rooms, both ran screaming across the room, as hysterical as teenage girls who had spotted their pop idol, fingers pointed at a picture they had seen in books; ‘Its a Picasso!’. Meanwhile, every security guard on site stood frozen, unsure how to handle the ‘situation. The adults in the crowded room stood back amused. When our daughters make these connections it lights up their minds — and ours. On a recent trip to Europe we visited Giverny, out side of Paris, where Monet painted his famous water lily paintings. I wasn’t sure they fully realised where we were; however, weeks later in the Impressionist Rooms at London’s National Gallery, one of my daughters discovered a huge Monet Water-Lilies painting and stood in front of it transfixed, posed just like Degas’ ‘little ballerina’. I realised then that she had made the connection — intoxicated by the painting. I always love it when I meet a child that has a passion for, and an interest in, art. That childhood passion is sometimes replaced by other things in the teenage years. However once an appreciation is installed and interest in the conversation art creates, both as a piece, and the culture in which it was created, that love lasts a lifetime. I love this passion for its own sake, but the benefits of art aren’t only experiential or esoteric. There is an increasingly persuasive body of academic research showing why art and creativity are an essential part of a well-rounded childhood. One of my friends, Sir Ken Robinson, is a world-renowned visionary in education. He says there’s a perception that art isn’t relevant in schools, with a focus on getting kids through tests to make them economically competitive as soon as possible. Ken’s view on that attitude? “Toxic,” he has told reporters. “Companies need people who can think differently and adapt and be creative… It starts with imagination. It’s the most extraordinary set of powers that we take for granted; the ability to bring into the mind the things that aren’t present.” If that’s not convincing enough, here are five compelling reasons why encouraging art expression, especially in children, can be immeasurably valuable: 1. Art develops motor skills in young children as they use a paintbrush, crayon or pencil to translate their visions onto paper. 2. Art can make your children happier. Kids experience ‘flow’

while creating art — a feeling of absorption, control, and a satisfying level of challenge. Flow build improved happiness, focus and self-esteem. 3. Art improves problem-solving skills. A major Guggenheim Foundation study found art education helped students think more flexibly, to be more persistent and more adaptive as they solved problems. 4. Art boosts achievement. High school students who studied art had higher maths and verbal scores, according to the American Academy for the Arts. 5. Art helps scientific innovation. Nobel Prize-winning scientists are more than twice as likely as other scientists to have an artistic or craft hobby, according to a Michigan State University paper. Researchers speculate art helps scientists think more creatively.. Beyond all these measurable benefits, there are the immeasurable. As I write this I am working with a fabulous family in the states, who’s son Charlie, who I’ve worked with for over 8 years, has Asperger’s. His favourite activity in the world is painting. He’s capturing his thoughts and feelings on canvas (a weather storm; we’ve been in the basement due to tornado’s!). Meanwhile I’m capturing ‘the artist’ at work on camera, creating another version of his work of art. Charles ‘studio’ space has become a beautiful tapestry of colour! I’m privileged to capture his curiosity and confident sense of purposeful vision– another ‘Rothko, Pollock or Woollaston’. Gorgeous impressionistic art comes naturally to Charlie. Curiosity is the secret of great creative people’ — that’s a ‘secret’ children already know, when they paint or explore art in all mediums. What a joy to ensure they never forget it. YOUNG, GIFTED & BRUSH STROKES Five centuries ago, the term ‘prodigy’ was used to describe something strange or weird, stemming from its Latin root, prodigium, which translates as ‘monster’ or ‘omen’. Nowadays, usage is far more kind, if a little more difficult to pin down.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a prodigy is simply a “highly talented child or youth”. IQ scores are one thing, as is the ability to, say, read at an early age, but how exactly does one measure talent? At what point does a talented child become a highly talented, or gifted one? Mozart, who famously began composing aged just five, is the most widely touted example of a prodigious youngster. Music is perhaps the perfect pointer to precocious skills, it doesn’t take a genius — or even a classically trained ear — to understand the complexity of crafting a symphony, but painting, for instance, especially of the abstract kind, is far more subjective. Aelita Andre is an Australian abstract artist whose works have been shown all over the world, with pieces selling for five-figure sums. She had her first solo exhibition in New York aged just four. Andre is now nine, and critics who dismiss abstract paintings as nothing more than childlike splatterings will no doubt take great pleasure in learning that her age was kept secret when her paintings were first offered to a gallery. But, a study published in Psychological Science, conducted by Dr Ellen Winner of Boston College and Harvard Graduate School, found that adults untrained in the visual

arts were overwhelmingly apt at separating professionally painted abstract works from the random brush strokes of kids — and even animals. Winner, who has written scores of articles on the subject, as well as the book Gifted Children: Myths and Realities, believes all kids may be capable or making beautiful art, but prodigies have a “rage to master”. Dr. Jennifer E. Drake of the City University of New New York says prodigies have an intense drive to draw. “They want to draw the minute they get up and the minute they get home from school,” she tells the Atlantic. And, most tellingly, “they don’t care about showing their art”. Remember, as an adult, it was Picasso’s dream to once more master painting with the freedom of a child. We take a look at some more gifted young souls.

Born in 1898, by the age of six, Sidis was fluent in Latin, French, Russian, German, Turkish, Hebrew and Armenian, having been able to read the New York Times before his second birthday. He enrolled in Harvard University at 10, and was never comfortable with his fame. Swimming Lessons for Under-Fives Save Lives

Recently, a client of Hilton Brown Swimming recounted a story that demonstrates the value of early swimming lessons. Kirsty Inglis was taught to swim by Hilton Brown, so when she and her husband started their family, deciding to give their children swimming lessons with Hilton Brown Swimming was a “no brainer”. The usefulness of the lessons became abundantly clear a few weekends ago when the family were at Kirsty’s brother’s place trying out the new pool. “My husband dived in down the far end, about 20 metres away,” says Kirsty. “I was chatting with some other mums when one of them said, ‘Oh my god, Jackson’s in the water.’ Jackson’s three-and-half, and an over-confident swimmer. At lessons we’re always encouraging him to stop and think before he jumps. This time he was really in over his head – the pool was deep and he went straight to the bottom. But after a moment he popped up to the surface for a breath, just like he’d been taught. He went down again, and then popped up for another breath. Then he made his way safely to the side of the pool. We didn’t panic, he didn’t panic. It was very reassuring to see.” Lessons can begin as early as three months at Hilton Brown Swimming. Introducing four new Sports Academies FOUR NEW JUNIOR SPORTS ACADEMIES WILL BE OFFERED TO STUDENTS FROM YEARS 7 - 10 IN 2017. THE ACADEMIES WILL BE FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE STRIVING TO IMPROVE AND COMPETE IN NETBALL, FOOTBALL, CRICKET OR RUGBY DURING THEIR TIME AT ST PETER’S. The course offers students a unique opportunity to develop both physical and mental sport-specific skills under the tuition of experienced coaches and players. Enrolment in this course will see students receive expert guidance specific to rugby, netball, football or cricket such as individual core skills, game understanding and sport specific conditioning. All students may apply for the course, and acceptance will be at the discretion of the lead coaches for each sport. Acceptance to the course will also require students to commit to one of St Peter's teams for the year. It is proposed that trials may be held for each of the academies if there is enough demand for the limited places that will be available at each year level. The new sports academies are designed to ensure all players reach their full potential in their chosen sport. Our ambition is to see them progress into: • Top junior and senior St Peter’s teams • Regional and national age group teams It is also hoped that the academies will lead to a culture of competition and excellence in the St Peter's sports programme and open opportunities to a possible career path or life-long involvement in sport beyond school.

COMFORT FROM A CLOUD Artist Deborah Smith was just 18 when her father died. “I remember it feeling weird being a bereaved child and having no one in my class who understood what I was going through,” she says. “It felt very isolating, very strange.” While Deborah found some solace in her art, her youngest brother turned to drugs to numb his grief, and Deborah vowed to help in any way she could to alleviate the suffering of similarly grieving youth. The Cloud Workshop is a manifestation of that promise. The concept — to provide a safe, creative and familiar environment where youngsters aged 5- to 17-years-old can for a few hours forget their woes — took shape in 2008, founded by Deborah and her friend Melissa Anderson Scott. Centred around various artistic endeavours, the 45 workshops so far have mostly been based out of the Mercy Hospice, with the main art galleries of Auckland, Hastings and Wellington also playing host. “The Hastings Art Gallery gave us an entire wall to draw on which was really exciting,” says Deborah. “It’s a fantastic, authentic art experience for a child to be able to come into a gallery and do that.” One young boy who attended that workshop has attended all others since: “His dad had died suddenly just a year before, and his mum says the only time he’s really happy is at the workshop.” The workshops are so popular that there’s a waiting list, but it took time to establish such trust. “People thought it would be like AA, with everyone forced to stand up and speak,” Deborah says. “They were concerned we’d take the lid of the kids, but it’s just not like that at all.” The elephant in the room is addressed immediately: “We welcome them and say that we are all here because someone close to us has died and that that sucks. The kids love that — they think that it’s very naughty — then we tell them that we’re not going to bang on about it but if they do want to talk there is a counsellor, so let’s have a great time and make some great art.” The organisers, who all give their time and energy for free, include fashion stylist Paris Mitchell, clothes designer Marilyn Sainty, artists John Reynolds, Emma McIntyre and Harry Were, and “an amazing haematologist” named Claire McLintock. Deborah’s mother, Lorraine Smith, and Deborah’s husband, Nicholas Stevens, have also supported her from the off, and none of it, she says, would have happened without them.

“The art projects are quite demanding and require much thought,” says Deborah, “but they are very free in the way they can be interpreted. The children use good materials and usually have a beautiful object to take home. When people visit, they’ll ask them about the project which then often engages them to speak abut the person who died. There are many benefits such as this that we hadn’t imagined.” In the workshop, interaction is key. “We need to find inspirational ways to break down the barriers as fast as possible,” Deborah says. “The children are all very shy to begin with but the place fills up with chatter very quickly. On occasion, there have been some amazing discussions about who they have lost, and what happened. From having done so many of these workshops my understanding is that these children want a holiday from their pain, but find it comforting to be amongst others who understand what they’re going through, without it being spelt out.” I ask about the oft-repeated notion that kids are stronger than we give them credit for, and Deborah dismisses it as myth. “It may make us feel better, but bereaved children really are very vulnerable,” she says. “Even if they don’t look like they are. I kidded myself that it’s not so bad for the little ones, but having done the research, it’s not okay to lose a parent when you are three — you can become disassociated from other people. Children are not as resilient as we like to think but we’re trying to give them tools to be so. In this case, it’s the tool of creativity.” Deborah’s aim is to create a national network of workshops. “It feels like we’re providing something that needed to exist,” she says. “We are lucky with the generosity of those who volunteer their time or resources. The children become empowered. I’m glad to do something practical to help, but I can’t focus too much on their stories because I would be debilitated, I’m not a therapist. My hope is that Cloud Workshop can simply help these young people to feel less alone in their grief.” To find out more, or to make a donation, visit cloudworkshop.co.nz Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

The instant you enter the school at Starship Hospital, you’re met with a sense of warmth and safety and a welcome to match from the staff (I am offered tea, coffee and chocolate cake within seconds). It’s an intimate space, filled with colourful, educational paraphernalia, which gives way to a sprawling balcony with a stunning city skyline view. From the ceiling hangs handmade lanterns and giant butterflies, while the walls are adorned with bookshelves, children’s paintings and photos of various celebrity visitors such as Valerie Adams, Justin Bieber, and the All Blacks.

STARSHIP’S SCHOOL SHINES

“That was an amazing experience for the kids,” says Jan Melbourne, associate principal. “It’s interesting to watch how many of those big names are so good with kids. Valerie Adams was phenomenal and we all turned into a bunch of groupies immediately!” The Starship Unit is part of the Northern Health School, an organisation which covers the top half of North Island, providing on-site and community education for sick kids who are away from their own schools for two weeks or

you may be feeling, you have to make sure that neither the child nor their family have any idea, because the worst thing you can do is add to their load.” It is not the kind of work for teachers whose main purpose is ensure their pupils sail through exams. “We do get highly academic kids here, but of course, not all of them are,” says Jan. “Sometimes you have to find rewards in the small things, like a child learning to smile.” But it often affords the opportunity for kids to catch up on any areas in which they’ve been struggling, through some one-on-one lessons. Jan says: “We have to do the same as any other teacher does which is respond to individual circumstances of the child and their individual learning. The one thing we can do here, that many can’t get in their regular classroom, is half-an-hour a day of one-on-one time. If there’s anything in maths, for example, that they didn’t understand. They may say that they didn’t get fractions and we can tell them, ‘I can teach you fractions in three days.’” The general approach is to check with the children’s school, find out what their class is doing, and replicate it as much as possible. I wonder what the general approach of the kids is, having to do do schoolwork while they’re sick. “It’s pretty much the same variety you get at any regular school,” Jan says. “The kids who are studious still want to work; those who are worried about passing exams become even more worried because they’re away; and then there are the kids who think, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me! We shouldn’t have to be doing this!’ But most of them are, overall, pretty positive about it. Daily school in hospital helps sick children because it is a normal activity for them, even if everything else is scary and different.” more. At any one time, the unit at Starship is staffed on the ratio of one teacher to eight children who arrive from all over the country. Jan has been a teacher for 30 years, 11 at Starship. “To work here requires a certain level of flexibility,” she says. “There is a fast turnover of children and you never know who will be here tomorrow. You have to be sensitive to the circumstances of the child — nobody gets into Starship lightly — and you must be adaptable. Each child’s requirements are different. A kid recovering from a brain injury may only be able to work for five minutes per day. You have to figure out what they can cope with.” It must be tough for the teachers, too, dealing with the very sick kids? “You can’t ever totally switch off from it. It is emotionally challenging. Most kids do get better, but not all do. What you absolutely must do is stay professional. Whatever

The teachers are also supported by a selection of volunteers: “They do an amazing job, are so reliable and we are very grateful to them. They’re a great crosssection of people, including younger people who make this commitment.” One such volunteer is artist Hannah Jensen who gives weekly classes. Inspired by those who’ve cared for them in hospital, Jan tells me many former pupils have gone on to pursue careers in medicine. Jan’s also keen to stress that the staff too draw inspiration from their pupils. “You meet some amazing kids and some amazing families coping so well under such dreadful circumstances, and it makes you wonder how they do it,” she says. “It feels like an enormous privilege to be part of their lives, however briefly, and it makes you intensely grateful for the healthy children in your own life. It’s very good at teaching us gratitude.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces Image: Jan Melbourne, Rosemary Gormack and Lesley Gardner

Gretchen Albrecht Gretchen Albrecht is one of New Zealand’s most established and recognisable painters with an exhibition history spanning more than five decades. She had her first solo exhibition at the Ikon Gallery in 1964 shortly after graduating from Auckland University’s Elam School of Fine Arts and was selected to exhibit in Contemporary New Zealand Painting at the Auckland City Art Gallery in the same year. Since these initial exhibitions, she has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions and four major surveys. In 1986, the Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui, organised Afternature — a Survey, 23 years; in 2002 the Auckland Art Gallery curated Illuminations, an exhibition surveying 24 years of Albrecht’s hemisphere and oval paintings; while in 2005 the Dunedin Public Art Gallery curated the exhibition Returning, which also travelled to the City Gallery, Wellington. Albrecht is represented in all major public and many private collections in New Zealand and in 2000 she was invested as a Companion of the Order of New Zealand for services to New Zealand painting.

and many were reproduced in the accompanying book of the same title — Colloquy — that was launched at the exhibition opening. Featuring essays by Colm Tóibín, Linda Gill, and Mary Kisler, and an introduction by Laurence Simmons, the book is a welcome addition to an impressive number of publications centred on Albrecht. The paintings focused on in the book, and exhibited in the accompanying show, are markedly diverse in terms of format, colour, scale, and painterly application. Works such as ‘Cloud over Whatipu’, from 1976, present the viewer with a large square canvas that is replete with sensuous and glowing swathes of liquid paint. By comparison, ‘Ember (dusk)’, painted in 1991, is executed on two quadrants bolted together to form a semi-circular shaped stretcher. Here, sombre tonalities build a tenebrous ground of dark pigments briefly punctuated by a glimmer and flash of a lustrous red. Indeed, as many critics and historians are quick to comment, Albrecht is one of New Zealand’s leading colourists, and her chromatic mastery is readily apparent in each and every work.

Most recently, Albrecht has been working with the prestigious fine art printmaking studio, Thumbprint Editions in Camberwell, London, where she has produced four limited edition polymer photogravure etchings that feature a lyrical use of colour offset by two strong horizontal lines, which has become a signature feature of her current practice. Her latest exhibition — Colloquy — was held at Two Rooms in late 2015, and offered something of a retrospective glimpse into her career with an impressive array of paintings that exemplified the breadth and depth of her oeuvre. The selection of works was chosen from the artist’s personal collection

When she began painting in the 1960s, Albrecht was part of a generation of artists swept up by the pioneering developments of the New York School — particularly the work of Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler and Robert Motherwell. Characterised by a freedom of expression and an unrestrained celebration of the emotive and metaphorical potential of paint, the resulting artworks all have something of a meditative element about them: beguiling to the eye and quieting to the mind. It is this quality that appears throughout the series of Albrecht’s saturated and stained works. It has been noted however, that Albrecht’s art historical roots can be traced back to the Italian Renaissance and the likes of Fra Angelico, Duccio and Piero della Francesca. While these influences and connections add another layer to Albrecht’s chromatic explorations, the corporeality of her method graces her paintings with a tactility and physical presence that demands immediacy and, both eschews and acknowledges history. ABRA — PRINCESS Abra is the princess of her own castle on new Princess EP, and she makes sure to vocalise until her self-sufficient message is crystal clear and projected through each of it’s six peppy, tongue-in-cheek anthems, created by a young woman alone in her bedroom for young girls alone in their bedrooms. Dipped in a trapping entrancement of elusive fantasy, tension building 80s synth pop is the sound Abra has found herself clinging to so naturally on Princess after toying with different personas on her first BLQ Velvet EP and last year’s debut album, Rose, but Abra’s running signature DIY, puzzle piece production approach on her latest EP serves as confirmation that anything the Dark Wave Duchess touches turns to gold. Abra wears her crown with conviction, leaving subtle reminders weaved between lyrics like, “if you wanna roll the dice on me okay, if you think you can afford it, come play” on ‘Vegas’, and on ‘Big Boi’ where she recruits Awful records label mate Tommy Genesis

after dusting off her rare slick, bossy rap tone to describe to the songs subject just how little importance he occupies, an undertone of immortal, self-made female spirit prevalent much the same even on more vulnerable tracks like ‘Thinking Of U’. Abra delivers consistently acute yet hazily deceiving, mystique production and matching textured vocals, her climatic dream pop with a final fantasy edge on the borderline of becoming a redefining creative R&B voice. Abra’s moves are super natural and metaphysically calculated with a sixth sense edge, much correlative to the famous Pokemon of her namesake; and if anything like the Pokemon — Abra is still at the dawn of the evolution to reaching her final form. — Words: Laura McInnes

It’s been a bumper year for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as they welcomed their new music director, the esteemed Edo de Waart. Signing on for the next three years, Maestro de Waart looks to share some of the world’s most loved pieces of classical music: “This season I’d like to begin our journey together by presenting the masterpieces I revisit time and time again for the good of the soul.” The maestro returns to Auckland this November to present Mozart & Elgar (Fri 4 November). Joined by famed pianist Ronald Brautigam, this concert will be a beautiful close to NZSO’s 2016 season in Auckland. But there are plenty of chances to see your national orchestra before then! This month they are joined by Kiwi favourite, The Rodger Fox Big Band and trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti, to present Swing into Spring (Fri 9 September). For the first time ever, this combination of big band and orchestra is set to wow audiences with classic big band favourites, new orchestral arrangements and hits from this millennium including music from Lorde and Fat Freddy’s Drop. In October they celebrate some of the best contemporary classical music in Bold Worlds: New Frontiers (Fri 7 October). With his focused and precise style, American conductor Fawzi Haimor will bring this rhythmic celebration alive. The stunning Anne Akiko Meyers also lends her violin to this programme. Performing Mason Bates’ violin concert, a piece written especially for her, Meyers is expected to wow audiences across the country.

ROGER FOX BIG BAND PLAYS NEW ZEALAND

Fresh from its run at the cinemas, this movie opened the world of Beethoven to many viewers. Leif Ove Andsnes is undoubtedly one of the top pianists of our age. For four years he has been performing and recording the five Beethoven piano concertos.

Legendary Jordi Savall gives a musical insight to 500 years of life in Spain’s Granada through the Jewish, Zirid, Almoravid, Almohad Nasrin dynasties and their influences on the neighbouring Christian kingdoms. Captivating for all who have travelled there!

This new release celebrates 40-plus years of performance and recording for the Roger Fox Big Band and is entirely New Zealand compositions all given that trademark Roger Fox Big Band treatment. A landmark for the band and a landmark for New Zealand jazz.

THE BOY’S HOME

everyone downloads TV shows, movies and music. Also, people I know don’t have the means to purchase music online – for a long time, I didn’t have a credit card either. I remember what that’s like. I would rather my work be accessible to everybody, and if they have the means they have the option to pay. Then it’s up to them.” There are tasters of what to expect via links on the Louie Knuxx Facebook page, but as of yet, there’s no set date for the next album’s release. For now, Todd’s busy with another project in his birthplace of New Plymouth, working at a Taranaki youth offenders home where he once did a stretch. I ask if it’s changed much since he was last there. “Yeah, heaps — we just used to chop wood all day!”

I read that Todd Williams, aka Louie Knuxx, believes he’s now making the finest music of his career, which goes against the commonly held view that, with time, comes the general drying up of artistic ideas. In a few months, this hip hop star plans to release his second album of the year (the first being Tiny Warm Hearts), not a bad tally for someone who’d fairly recently considered quitting music for good. I ask Todd, 36, how he accounts for his bountiful creative burst and he says he’s not entirely sure, but probably puts it down to age and maturity. There’s certainly a wisdom to both his verse and his vibe, somewhat of a tearaway in his youth (we’ll get to that later), Todd’s life and lyrics now veer more towards love than loathe. “I’m not afraid of change,” he says. “My approach has always been healthy. I don’t place restrictions on myself or try to pander to my audience. I just enjoy it. My enjoyment of the process is paramount, and what happens afterwards doesn’t matter. I still treat it like a hobby. I’m not in it to make money.” He’s not kidding about that — the rapper famously releases his recordings for free, which is, I say, a very noble approach. “Well, I download all my music for free! It’s hilarious when you see artists moaning about people not paying for music when

Now, the boys enrol in programs which see them learn bush skills, the haka and wood carving, followed by a meeting with loved ones at a marae so their families “can see them in a new light”. The hip hop artist has previously also served as the youth development manager at Nga Rangatahi Toa, a creative arts institute in south Auckland for troubled kids. Todd’s turbulent past certainly puts him in the perfect position to positively influence misguided youth, but, I wonder, is he learning anything from the boys? “Absolutely. It’s hard to remember all of my experiences, it’s foggy. I was doing a lot of drugs so that didn’t help, but seeing their experiences up close, it’s visceral. It makes me reflect upon my own past. It’s strange. I feel very deeply for them and it’s emotional for me to see what they’re going through. They are all trapped in the system. They are repeatedly being sent to juvenile lock-ups. I see them and I know they don’t want to be where they are, but they don’t have any idea how not to be. And I imagine that is how I was.” Does it bring some form of closure? “No, I think I had closure on all that stuff ages ago. I’ve left it behind me. My life is pretty easy. It’s comfortable and safe and I guess that’s what’s those boys need. It’s what we offer them in this period of their lives.”

There’s a music studio at the home, and while working in south Auckland, Todd also embarked upon a range of creative projects with his charges. Troubled souls are often the most talented. “Many kids that are kicked out of school don’t fit into the system for many reasons. They are adventurous, creative, and they think differently. I’m often drawn to that. The mischief. You meet them, often identifying their skills and talents within 30 seconds, but no one has ever told them that they are good at something. We interviewed a boy recently before he enrolled in the program, and he was so articulate. We asked him what he wanted to do it and he said that he will probably be a roadworker. We told him he was an academic — not that there is anything wrong with being a roadworker — but this kid had something, yet no one had ever taken the time to identify what it is.”

Why is that? “Because the system is broken. In this boy’s case there were way deeper issues which hadn’t been addressed. There was deepseated hurt and once in the system there wasn’t any care taken to nurture or foster any talent that he had. These boys need an escape and that is usually found in building self-worth. Letting them know that they have something to contribute. I think the best approach is to let them know that they matter.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN PLAYING IN THE MUD TO CELEBRATE YOUR 75TH BIRTHDAY! Jeep is all about getting out into the great outdoors, looking for adventure, chasing down excitement and getting the heart pumping, so there was no way that Jeep’s 75th birthday could be marked with a stuffy indoor party,” says Steve Hilson, dealer principal at Winger North Shore Jeep. “It’s not just Jeep celebrating its 75th birthday,” explains Hilson. “Kiwis have also been behind the wheel of Jeeps for 75 years. Our troops got their first Jeeps just weeks after full production started in 1941, and the Kiwi soldiers became legends in Europe for their ability to get through the worst conditions, often under fire, in their Jeeps, delivering vital supplies and rescuing wounded soldiers.” Jeep, quite simply, created the class of car that is now the increasingly dominant car type around the world, and has gone on to define each class of SUV with benchmark models such as the Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and, most recently, Renegade. “There is no doubt that the concept created by Jeep has been much copied by other car makers, many of whom admit that Jeep was their inspiration, but none match the range wide depth of ability that all Jeep models offer, nor, of course, Jeep’s unique heritage and history,” says Hilson. “It is, not to put too finer point on it, an honour to represent Jeep and to be part of its history.” As well as testing his skills in the mud, sand, water, and on the hills and rocks, Hilson has also brought back to the North Shore a special part of the Jeep legend – a special, limited edition range of the key Jeep models all wearing their badges of honour to mark the 75th anniversary. “I DON’T NEED A SERVICE, I JUST GOT A WOF!” A Warrant of Fitness is an important safety check, but it is not a preventative maintenance check. It does not check your engine oil, coolant, tyre pressures or the oils for your automatic transmission, gearbox, power steering or diff. It also doesn’t check your brake fluid or even how much brake pad is left. Sometimes, the technician can see them through the wheels, but they don’t remove the wheels to do a proper check. If any of these fluids are low or run out, the costs can run to thousands of dollars for very preventable repairs.

“IT WON’T MATTER IF I GO OVER MY SERVICE SCHEDULE BY JUST FEW THOUSAND KILOMETRES.” Ask most mechanics and you will probably hear some horror stories about customers paying thousands of dollars more for repairs because the customer was well over their service date. One horror story I know was when a customer’s car was towed in as it had run out of transmission fluid – vehicles don’t have a warning light for this and many other fluids. The customer was only 3,000km overdue for a service. It was just a leaking transmission seal, cost to repair approximately $250.00 if caught in time. The cost to replace the whole auto transmission was over $8,000! If the customer had come in time we could have saved the auto transmission.

The service schedule will actually be every 12 months , or 30,000 kms - whichever happens first. The oil may last 30,000 kilometres (although this is still being debated), but in my opinion the rest of vehicle needs inspecting more often than that. I certainly do that to all my family’s vehicles. Talk to your Auto Super Shoppe about the best servicing regime for your vehicle to ensure you are minimising your risk around costly repairs and you are keeping your family safe.

The Stones on Property Kiwi’s have a love affair with property – some say that real estate, not rugby, is New Zealand’s national sport! We love it so much that five years ago we decided to make it our life. So we became real estate agents.

For many people, their home is their biggest and most valuable asset. So when it comes to buying or selling it is vital that they have as much information as possible about the process, that’s why we’ve decided to write a monthly ‘Question & Answer’ column in Verve — to help you better navigate the property maze. This month, we have a couple of interesting questions about buying a property, perhaps for the first time. I am going to be bidding at auction in two weeks’ time. The agent selling the property has told me I need a 10% deposit on the fall of the hammer, but I can’t raise it until just before the settlement date of late April. What options do I have? Sarah W. Our first suggestion is to talk to the agent and explain your situation. Although auctions usually call for a 10% deposit you can ask the agent to approach the vendor with a variation allowing you to pay, for example, a 5% deposit. If the vendor agrees, then you are all set for auction day. In our opinion, it is short-sighted for a vendor or agent to reject a lower deposit – we want every interested party to be at the auction and able to bid, and with property prices in Auckland the reduced deposit is usually still a significant amount. This is another reason our auction clearance rates are so high. The same thing applies to settlement dates, if the vendor’s settlement date doesn’t work for you then you can approach the agent and ask for a variation. This variation will only apply to you, and no other buyers will be told.

I’ve just bought at auction and I settle in another three weeks. The property is tenanted but will be vacant at settlement. What safeguards do I have that it will be in good condition when I settle? Gary W. As a purchaser, you are entitled to a ‘pre-settlement inspection’. What this means is that you can insist on the agent showing you through the property a day or two prior to settlement. Strictly speaking, you can only insist on the property being in an ‘as inspected’ condition — the same condition as when you viewed it at, say, the open home — and that the chattels are in good working condition. When we market a property we ensure all chattels are in good order; if the dishwasher, for example, is faulty, we list it on the sale and purchase agreement as an ‘excluded chattel’. Make sure you check all the included appliances are working and that things like the alarm system and all the lights, are working too. Contrary to popular belief, the sellers do not have to clean the property prior to settlement, although most do of course. Enjoy your new home! If you have any questions relating to real estate we would love to hear from you – just email us at thestones@raywhite.com, or go to our website: thestones.co.nz

DOWNSIZING TO AN APARTMENT OR TOWNHOUSE? PRO’S AND CON’S

REGULAR MAINTENANCE

Times are a changing, as the song goes, and we have seen this in Auckland over the last few years as those born in the 50s and 60s are now approaching retirement.

Today I would like to talk about regular maintenance.

Sep 2016

The children have left home, you are considering selling your business, and you are in good health and have more wealth than past generations. But, you have this large family home and all that is required to keep it looking good. Plus, the money you’ve invested in it is not earning or is not available for you to use. So, do we downsize to an apartment or townhouse? What are the pros and cons? 1

2 3

4

5

Consult your partner and have a plan — understand the reason why you are moving. Look at location, size, transport needs, medical, family visiting, car parking for visitors, and so on. Write the ideas down, and talk to those who have moved. View properties to consider the size and how your furniture will fit. What can you do without, or compromise on? Furniture? Two cars or one? Garden or balcony? Sharing common areas? Do your homework and work on the list. Complex facilities such as a pool, gym, tennis court and maybe even a movie theatre within the building — these are just some of the options the building may come with but they come with costs. If they are of value then add them to the mix Body corp, insurance, and building management — do your homework so you know how the building is working. Do they have issues coming up? Look over the last three years of AGM and body corp minutes. Ask to speak to the body corp secretary and ask the difficult questions. Remember, you make a saving on the insurance you will pay as you only need to pay for insurance for your personal belongs That extra cash? — for holidays, families, investments and properties. You have a choice when you downsize

Embrace the changes, Sell the stuff, and rethink your new lifestyle. Remember it will be a change for the good if you have done your homework. Yes, there is heartache in understanding you can’t accommodate all that you had in your home in the past, but it also comes with a new found freedom. I’ve moved from a large family home to a townhouse and love it. Happy to talk if you wish to ask.

I can generally split my customers into two types. The first type are those who are careful with their computers. They come for regular servicing and security checks. They update hardware and software regularly, and on the whole experience very few problems with their computers. The second type of people are those who never get service checkups. They let their antivirus expire and don’t keep cleaning out old software, temp files or dust out the interior. I only get to see them when the computer stops working or they have a virus. These are the people who experience data loss. Photos, emails, accounting data and even genealogy information that has taken years to accumulate. All lost because basic maintenance has been ignored. They are always in a panic and demand instant service. They are shocked at discovering how much it costs to recover data from a failed hard drive. Even just recovering and reloading a system that has completely crashed can be significant. All of this can be preventable with a good regime of maintenance. So which type are you? If you are considering buying new hardware this year, please call us to discuss your needs. We are happy to advise on the type of product that would suit you. Tablets, while popular, are great for ‘viewing’ but less useful for ‘doing’. A cheap laptop will struggle to run high end design programs that students may need in engineering or architecture. Desktop-type all-in-one PCs are great space savers, but low end models may not last well, or give good value over time. Please call with any questions. Our advice is free. Best wishes, Rudy and Rosemary. Rudy's Verve Mag advert.pdf

THE SUCCESSFUL SHOPPER 127 BUSINESS/ EDUCATION & SOCIETY Sep 2016

I am a shopper. I am a chartered accountant, I run a team of financial coaches, I ‘get’ money. Yet, I am still a shopper. People tell me budgeting is simple and to some it might be. “Spend less than you earn,” they say. I get it. I could make my clients do it. I just struggle to do it naturally. The science makes sense; the follow-through is where I come unstuck. That’s me. Some might judge, but that is me. Interestingly, my husband is a saver. Those married to a different money personality will agree that the way different financial personalities blend, can make for interesting viewing. I often say getting ahead financially can be similar to getting fit or losing weight. Some of us are born with a fast metabolism, making it easier to lose weight. Others of us aren’t. Money is the same. Some people are born savers, many of us aren’t. We might have financial smarts or learn what we need to do but this in isolation seldom translates to us achieving our financial capability. Life makes it hard. The busier you are the easier it is for the small things to slip. Being accountable to someone can be the key to success for many. To assess your financial fitness, jump on your own financial scales. Determine if you are in need of a financial workout, and hit the gym. Questions you could ask yourself: • • • • • •

How much of my pay packet do I have left over each week? Am I a shopper or a saver? What are my financial goals? When will I be mortgage free? How much do I need for retirement? Do I have a plan? Am I sticking to it?

We are based at 100 Parnell Road.

The irony is not lost on me that I have my own financial coach; I am not embarrassed to surround myself with people who can help me reach my goals. I have a personal trainer to make sure I actually exercise. Sometimes she has me do things I know I should do but would never get around to if left to my own devices.

REQUEST A CONSULTATION

I am a busy working mum and, unless I am held accountable to a result, the little things slip. I do not want my financial future, and that of my kids, to take a back seat while I struggle with the constant juggle of life.

BUILDING OUR TEACHING WORKFORCE FOR KIWI KIDS

TRAINS FOR THE SHORE

Sep 2016

We all remember our favourite teacher, and I think most people can think of story about a moment that teacher had an impact on their lives. For me, it was Bob Hunt, my Japanese teacher in the 4th form at Auckland Grammar. He was highly eccentric, but it was during his class that I remember becoming passionate about learning, for the first time. Since that light was turned on, it has never faded. Teachers not only impart knowledge. They also help shape their students’ outlook and their attitude towards learning. National wants to support Kiwi teachers, as we recognise the important role they play in our children’s lives. Right now we have sufficient teachers overall, but they are not necessarily in the areas or subjects we need them in. So we’re investing more than $9 million over four years to address teacher supply pressures. The government will offer an extra 100 Teach NZ Scholarships worth $1.8 million per year for science, technology, and maths (STM) subjects, to lift the number of graduates in these areas by the end of 2017. We know these scholarships have a proven record of quickly boosting supply in particular teaching areas. We will also invest nearly $1 million in an Auckland programme to employ 40 new teachers through to full registration. The programme, developed with the Auckland Primary Principals’ Association, will help ensure new teacher graduates are employed in the profession and stay in the profession. We’ve been working with principals and sector groups to find solutions to teacher shortages in any given subject. One of these solutions is expanding both national and international recruitment options. We going to increase our investment in these recruitment campaigns from $220,000 to about $1 million, and we’re launching a new recruitment campaign focused on bringing Kiwi teachers back home. To support our recruitment of STM teachers we’re going to invest in promoting teaching as a career to tertiary STM students. This will begin now, so that people finishing their qualifications this year can consider it as one of their options. Ensuring every child gets a good education is one of the most important things National can do to raise living standards, and build a more competitive and productive economy. And more broadly, education is the key to social mobility. Every Kiwi boy or girl, no matter what their background, must be given the opportunity to learn from great teachers.

Auckland is growing, and we urgently need to catch up on building a modern public transit network. Electrification of the rail network has been a huge success, but we had to fight for it. I joined the Green Party in 2006 to help campaign for electrification. Later, as an MP, I led our subsequent campaign for the City Rail Link (CRL), which will bring waiting times down to only five minutes at peak. Now that construction has started on the CRL, it is time to start planning the next extensions to our rail network — rail to the airport and the North Shore. The government is currently investigating options for another Waitematā Harbour crossing. However, as usual, they are primarily focussing on a very expensive road tunnel, and have ruled out even evaluating a rail-only option, even though it would move three times as many people at much lower cost. Think about how great it would be if you could take the train from Takapuna around town, or from town to the beach. How much quicker it would be to get to work if you didn’t have to sit in endless traffic every morning. You could check your email or read instead of stressing about finding a car park. Rail is the best way to move more people without making congestion worse. Another road crossing would dump 20,000 more cars a day onto the already congested roads in central Auckland. The Auckland of the future is one that’s vibrant, lively, and people friendly. Fewer cars in the city means fewer car parks, making room for homes, shops, cafes and public spaces. It means more places to soak up the sunshine, and means a city centre you actually enjoy spending time in — before you hop on the train home.

What a wonderful time of the year it is, with the sunshine, spring blossoms, and tuis trilling in the trees, their sound reverberating around the neighbourhood. I could also rave on about the daffodils with their bright yellow trumpets swaying in the breeze — as you can tell, I just love this time of the year. We have had some changes at Just Rentals. My twin sister, Gloria, a valued member of our team, has left to live in Tauranga. We shall all miss her, but I have a great team so onwards we go. I hope all landlords have been busy checking and replacing the smoke alarms in their properties? Also, it’s a good time to get quotes for Insulation 2019. It will come so quickly and that is the deadline for the compulsory insulation standards set by legislation. As we rent properties, we must place on the listings what insulation there is, also, any other heating and the R-rating. Tenants are aware of these changes and will be looking at that information when deciding on which property to rent. Do not forget the trees and shrubs will require a trim, and gardens tidied also. Getting them looking good for summer make your tenants happy, and happy tenants are good tenants. With the changes in residential zoning, there will be many more residences built. Everywhere you drive, every street you go down, there are sections being cleared, houses removed and lots of buildings going up. Apartments will be built in residential areas and some of these will be bought by investors, so there will always be stock to rent and people who wish to rent.

HOROSCOPES

(20 January – 18 February) A busy month of restructuring, tending to details, errand running, and learning is in store for you. You might find that you benefit from more attention to practical matters as well as re-organisation of important structures in your life. Romance won’t allow you to manifest on new territories, but things will go very smoothly with the already built relationships. Steer away from extravagant ideas

PISCES

(19 February – 20 March) The money you’ll earn by working will be more certain. The effort will be considerable, but also the earnings. You’ll have more strength, but the pressure will become higher, so you necessarily have to do something to relax. Relationships with colleagues or subordinates will be more subjective, influenced by sentimental changes. Collaborations and contracts can become troublesome.

ARIES

(21 March – 19 April) The support and opportunities seem to come when you least expect them, but when you need them most. This will be a fruitful month, which won’t lack obstacles and stress, but which will also give you the power to succeed. The stars will support you both in practical, concrete actions and in artistic and creative activities. You’ll be in an excellent physical shape and you’ll have very good morale.

TAURUS

(20 April – 20 May) Career matters continue to bring some level of pressure, as the cosmos is asking you to structure your professional life in such a way that you are more effective in what you do. Personal changes run deep as you explore your ambitions and need for control over your life. Relationships are mostly easygoing until mid-month, when a partner might become uncommunicative, distant, or possibly reconsider matters. Allow others space and time to sort things out.

GEMINI

(21 May-20 June) Your perceptions will be keen, so you’ll feel the smell of opportunities, and the instinct will take you straight to the most advantageous situations. Love life can somehow be influenced by obligations and responsibilities and a romance or creative project that has been picking up speed in recent weeks could meet with some challenges, but that won’t stop you from flirting.

VIRGO

(23 September – 22 October) This month will keep you active, ready for action, fight, competition and initiative. You’ll be ambitious, strong and courageous. Money matters are strong for you this month as you focus on making yourself feel secure. You are also likely to be held in high esteem by superiors, elders, and your partner. In collaborations and associations, things will unfold in your favour and you’ll get unexpected opportunities.

SCORPIO

LIBRA

(23 September - 22 October) This month will be favorable to harmony and relational fulfillment. Intellectual or spiritual communion, shared interest in exploring new horizons and trips are factors that will attract happiness. If you have scientific, literary, academic, cultural or spiritual preoccupations, opportunities will show up. It’ll be an expansion interval, of widening the horizon. All gates will be open, and no matter which you go through, you can find happiness.

CANCER

(21 June -22 July) This is not the best time for you to take the lead, present your ideas, or to aggressively pursue personal plans. Instead, getting organised, paying bills, and negotiating with others are important activities for you in September. It’s possible that an enjoyable and profitable business trip will appear, or maybe collaboration with somebody from overseas. Romantic charm runs exceptionally high this month and singles could meet someone new.

(23 October – 21 November) You’ll be in an enviable shape that will combine vigour with resistance. You might find that joining forces with others is necessary for accomplishing your goals. Receiving good news about your career can lift your spirits this month. Emotions will be higher, and stimulus responses fast. Home life seems to be more rewarding for the time being, and romance is highly favored.

SAGITTARIUS

(22 November – 21 December) It’s time to rethink your strategies. Plans or goals that have recently been fuelling your considerable enthusiasm may stall, or you might lose interest in them for the time being. A romance might develop some complications from the 19th, and be very clear in your communications in order to avoid misunderstandings. Some of you might be rethinking your game plan regarding travel or educational focus.

CAPRICORN

(22 December – 19 January) Partnering, compromising, and negotiating are the primary areas of focus for you this month. It’s a time when paying close attention to others’ needs, wants, schedules, and plans rather than your own is most rewarding. Work matters are moving forward in pleasing ways, and you have the chance to showcase just how creative you can be. Better planning and correct life hygiene, will help you keep in shape.

LEO

(23 July – 22 August) Everything related to objectives, position and career will deeply motivate you, but will constantly keep you in a state of tension. The actions you’ll take will be successful as long as they are in agreement with your emotions and feelings. This will be a wonderful period in which you and your partner will look in the same direction and you’ll share aims and views on the way to achieve them.

BEYOND THE HORIZON New exhibition draws on story-telling and cultural transmission in the digital age

Dravuni: Sivia yani na Vunilagi — Beyond the Horizon explores cultural transmission in the digital age, belonging and place-making, legends and storytelling. The exhibition is on at the New Zealand Maritime Museum, until October 10, 2016, and is a collaboration between Ema and Kaliopate Tavola. The father-daughter duo have been collaborating on a blog about their island of Dravuni for the last six years. The blog explores the history, legends, social structure and contemporary issues relating to Dravuni from the perspective of a ‘Kaidravuni’, one who is indigenous to the island. The exhibition attempts to illustrate the on and offline connections and conversations the blog has enabled. “This is a deeply personal project that relates to my relationship with my Dad, our relationship to Dravuni, and the ways that the internet and the ocean have become our gateways to the world,” says Ema Tavola. “At its core it is a cultural transmission. It is the process of how we tell stories.” Dravuni is a small island with less than 200 inhabitants. Although there is no airport or roads, there is a cruise ship dock and much of the island’s income stems from tourism. Many visitors comment on the unspoiled beauty of the island, the friendliness of the inhabitants and the snorkelling. The root of the project has been fostered by Ema’s father’s blog which he begun six years ago to bring Dravuni to the world. “Before that — the only information online was observations from cruise ship tourists. The blog gave Dravuni a voice,” says Ema. This exhibition endeavours not only to provide museum visitors with a deeper and more intimate introduction to the island, but also encourages them to reflect on the role of story-telling and the way in which knowledge and information is passed down through generations.

The children from Dravuni have created drawings and art work which have been heavily incorporated into the exhibition. “The illustrations become the manifestations of where we want to go and who we are. “Fundamentally it is storytelling with children and the illustrations are a big part of that.” “At its core the illustrations by the children look at what is beyond the horizon of Dravuni and talk about what they anticipate is there,” says Ema, “for children growing up on the island, their playground was the beach and they would look out onto the ocean and dream about what is beyond the horizon.” Some of the children’s illustrations will be applied to textiles and sold to tourists on Dravuni, enabling profits to be directed back into the school. The funds will go towards helping to expand the children’s horizons and taking the children to mainland Fiji. The exhibition also invites visitors to explore what’s home to them. “It’s a chance to reconnect to where we are from.” It speaks to many generations and shows how the different generations connect with one another. “The cultural norm is for children to be seen and not heard. This exhibition turns the tables and gives the children the opportunity to take the mic.” “It’s part of the development of how we engage with the children. We asked them what their favourite thing to do in Dravuni is. It gives the exhibition a unique voice. It’s really quite ground breaking for Fiji,” says Ema. The exhibition is on at the NZ Maritime Museum and runs alongside a community based project, Ko au te wai, ko te wai au: I am the water and the water is me, facilitated by South Auckland collective The Roots Creative Entrepreneurs.
