EDITORS' NOTE

CHANGING CHRISTMAS FOR THOSE IN NEED: ONE HANDBAG AT A TIME

The Verve handbag appeal for women and girls in need has been a huge success and our small studio has become a store of generosity—your generosity. To those of you who have donated, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. If you would like to be involved there is still another month or so to go. It is our aim to help as many women and girls at risk as possible by ensuring that, during the festive season, they have access to some of the small essentials most of us take for granted. IT REALLY IS EASY: First, choose a handbag or bag in good condition—one that you no longer use. Then, fill it with items that would make a woman feel special and pop in a thoughtful note or Christmas card to show her someone cares, that she matters, because, hey, everyone deserves to fell that way! Next time you are out shopping, collect a few items for your Christmas donation. No matter how you celebrate Christmas, this will probably be the most meaningful and appreciated gift you give this year.

WHEN AND WHERE CAN I MAKE MY DONATION? Deliver your donations to the Verve office between now and 2 December: Studio 10, 160 Broadway, Newmarket (the walkway next to Movenpick) or drop off at Painted Bird 164 Kitchener Rd, Milford. WHAT GOES IN THE BAG? Ask yourself what you would like to receive in your Christmas stocking. We suggest packing your bag full of useful things and little luxuries. Especially relevant are those everyday essential items like a toothbrush, hygiene products, a hairbrush, and useful food items like muesli bars. AUCKLAND CITY MISSION & WOMEN'S REFUGE Verve will be taking the collection of handbags and bags to Auckland City Mission and Women’s Refuge for them to distribute along with their usual Christmas drive. CHRISTMAS CHARITY Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates #giveahandbagthischristmas. For more information please visit vervemagazine.co.nz

BOATHOUSE BAY

HOME & DESIGN // NOV 2018

“The site is just fabulous and I’m so excited to move there,” beams Jean Lewis of her new home-to-be in Boathouse Bay. “It’s so beautifully imagined. Where else can you get such an exquisite, architecturally-designed beachfront property so close to Auckland?”

“I love the design, it’s all so clever,” says Jean. “They’re just like boathouses, but it’s not just one design repeated over and over, and they’re low-maintenance and practical to boot. For a beachfront, you couldn’t do better.”

Positioned on the Mahurangi Peninsula, on the northern end of Snells Beach, the Boathouse Bay development comprises 33 dwellings spread across a two-hectare, ocean-facing site, inspired by the classic boathouse look while riffing on the iconic Kiwi bach. And it’s all just a 50-minute drive from Auckland.

Jean, who already has friends living at Snells Beach, is thrilled to have constantly been kept in the loop, even meeting with the developers, designers and architects. “The whole team have been amazing,” she says. “Very on-the-button, accommodating, and totally professional. I was able to express some of my own thoughts into the internal design such as whitewashed ceilings, some extra windows and a fireplace. I just wanted to change little bits here and there, to make it more me, and they took it all on.”

“I love being by the ocean,” continues Jean, who currently lives in Saint Heliers. “For most of my life I’ve had sea views. I come from Timaru, where I looked out on to Caroline Bay, and here there will be nothing but beach in front of me. Quite idyllic, really.” Architect Ken Crosson’s aim is to build a highquality “special community” that allows “a greater number of New Zealanders to live more affordably on their coastline”. “The inspiration was the boat sheds that we see on our coastal margins,” says the architect, “like Oriental Parade and Hobson Bay and also those original bach communities with modest houses.” The Boathouse Bay development ranges from oneto three-bedroom houses, some elevated, and not of a uniform design (a big box ticked for Jean). Working alongside landscape architect Rachel de Lambert, great effort has gone into incorporating and enhancing the immediate environment that comprises native bush and undulating dunes carpeted in coastal grasses. “Boathouse Bay has been designed so that residents feel as if they’re part of the magnificent beachside environment,” says Rachel. “The project has evolved with the architecture and landscape design fully integrated, and that’s something rather special. It will create a very desirable opportunity to live in a small scale coastal community.”

“Boathouse Bay has been designed so that residents feel as if they’re part of the magnificent beachside environment” Jean certainly knows her stuff, having worked as a draughtswoman, while her late husband was also in the building trade. “We’d always been involved in the industry,” she says. “I was involved with the house plans for a retirement village in Timaru. This is the first time I’ve built off-plan, but I have no problem with that as I can envisage the size and design. I love it. “I just can’t wait for it to be built. It’s such an exciting development, and it will be superb. So much good thought has gone into it, and it’s going to be a lovely place for the grandchildren to come and stay!” SITE VISITS ARE AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT. EMANDEE HOMES BRINGING PAERATA RISE TO LIFE

Mike Potter and Lisa Stone It’s full steam—and exciting times—ahead for Pukekohe-based building company Emandee Homes, headed by brother and sister team Mike Potter, a builder, and architectural designer Lisa Stone. The siblings have construction coursing through their veins having founded Emandee Homes with their dad, now retired, in 2011. “Dad was a builder back in the days when builders used to draw plans,” Lisa says. “We’ve always been around the industry, and we just absorbed it.” That family-run philosophy remains firmly entrenched. The close-knit Emandee team take great pride in their hands-on, uber-personalised approach to their bespoke house building that often results in life-long friendships with their clients. Emandee can arrange everything from finding the land to finance to building consent to recommending companies to help you move. Such service has not gone unnoticed, with the young building firm selected as one of 10 contracted to bring Paerata Rise to life. It’s a brand-new Paerata community that blends the best of rural and urban living across 4,500 properties on former farming grounds owned by Wesley College and charitable trust, Grafton Downs. “It’s thrilling to be involved in something a little bit different,” says Lisa. “There’s a really strong vision of how they want it to work, and every house is bespoke.” “It’s such a unique project around here,” Mike adds. “There has been nothing on that scale. They’re very much following the Hobsonville Point model, and in fact used the same designer from San Francisco.”

Right on the doorstep of Pukekohe, a region more renowned for its produce, this state-of-the-art satellite town will offer services such as schools, boutique stores, medical facilities, a retail district, transport hub, library, and art gallery. A vibrant café culture will be complemented by five hectares of neighbourhood reserves, cycle paths and walkways, while the railway station offers direct access to the centre of the Big Smoke. Paerata Rise promises to be a commuters’ haven. “Young people should be able to build funky new homes,” Lisa says. “They need to know that it’s not necessary to live in tiny two-bedroom places. We love building homes that families are really amped about moving in to.”

“Emandee can arrange everything from finding the land to finance to building consent to recommending companies to help you move.” On 1 December there will be a grand opening of all the showhomes in Paerata Rise and you can find Emandee at 17 Jonah Lomu Drive, named after the late legendary All Black who attended Wesley College. It certainly promises to be a fun, festival atmosphere, with delegates and food trucks and entertainment.

THE RENTAL PROPERTY MARKET IN NEW ZEALAND IS DUE FOR A BIG SHAKE-UP Most of us are probably aware of this, as for months now the government’s focus on Healthy Homes and some of the likely changes to the laws governing rental properties, have been reported across various media. But what seems to have slipped under the ‘big news’ radar is the interim report released on 20 September by the government’s Tax Working Group. Headed by former Labour deputy prime minister Sir Michael Cullen, this group has been tasked with reviewing New Zealand’s tax system, including its structure, fairness and balance as it applies to wealth generally, and to capital income specifically. This includes looking at the merits of extending the taxation of capital income to asset classes previously exempt from capital gains, including paying tax on profits when selling properties. On a brighter note, increasing the income tax rate, or the rate of GST, implementing an inheritance tax or any changes that would apply to the taxation of the family home or the land underneath it, are outside the Tax Working Group’s mandate. The Tax Working Group have considered 6,700 submissions lodged between 1 March – 30 April 2018, and the report notes that many submitters have been concerned that tax-free gains on houses encourages New Zealanders to place a high proportion of savings in land and housing, leaving lower New Zealand savings for other forms of investment. Is any of this relevant to rental property investors and to the rental market? It might well be. Although the report did admit it was difficult to quantify the impact of the New Zealand tax system on house prices and rents, mainly because the housing market was subject to many different influences and there is very little definitive evidence available regarding the tax impact on house prices and rents in New Zealand. However, the Tax Working Group did agree that some features of the current tax system—such as the inconsistent treatment of capital income—have probably exacerbated the house price cycle (even if the tax system is not the primary cause of unaffordable housing). This means that any extensions to capital income taxation, such as the introduction of a new tax on capital gains from residential property investments, will likely impact the housing market, including probably putting

KERRY KIRWAN BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER KERRY@QUINOVIC-PARNELL.CO.NZ 022 010 8005 | QUINOVICPARNELL.CO.NZ

upward pressure on the ratio of rents to prices—in other words, it’s likely to cause rents to rise. Taking a lead from across the Tasman hasn’t been ruled out either. The interim report lists examples from Australia, which could herald the development of similar taxes in New Zealand, including 'vacant land' and 'empty house' taxes. These are seen as one way of improving housing supply and affordability, but the report also notes that the introduction of a tax on vacant residential land, or on empty homes in residential areas, would likely intensify the use of existing urban areas—thereby creating another set of problems. The interim report stops short of making a definitive recommendation on the introduction of a broad-based capital gains tax on property and sharemarket investments, but it is still early days. Sir Michael says they know that extending the taxation of capital income will have a range of advantages and disadvantages, but that the group is still weighing up all the issues. The final report will be published in February 2019, and the government has promised several more rounds of reports and public consultation before the final decisions are made by cabinet. However, as the appetite for any proposed changes is likely to be tested at the 2020 election, it would appear that the implementation of any new tax laws is unlikely to happen before the start of the 2021 tax year. Our best advice is to get the best advice. There are some very skilled tax accountants and tax lawyers who specialise in the residential property marketplace; make sure you are working with experts. We started off this article by talking about the new ‘Healthy Homes’ legislation. If you are a residential rental property owner and you’re not aware of how this could affect you and your rental investment—then you need to know now! Talk to the experts. For free, informed and practical advice on any aspect of residential property management, including Healthy Homes, give Quinovic Parnell or Quinovic Viaduct a call.

MORE THAN A SOUND STORE WORDS: JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES

Chris & Peter

It may be Newmarket’s most iconic store you’ve never heard of, but The Sound Store will soon be celebrating its quarter-century anniversary, and new owners Peter Hollins and Chris Du Toit have been busy with the renovation and rebrand. “Many people know the place as the ‘Bose store’,” Peter tells Verve as we wonder past some seriously impressive décor that highlights the even more impressive high-tech kit, “but following the revamp, we’re determined to transform it from a traditional hifi store into an experience centre.” And what an experience it is. Gone are the former window-clogging promotional posters as natural light floods the all-new open-plan showroom that now resembles a fashionable loft apartment that gives way to an ‘outdoor’ area replete with a working bar. “Sales has changed,” Peter continues, “people can get anything online. However, the problem is that they don’t know what to do with the equipment once they get it. Here, they can experience the store, and experience the sound and what can be achieved through a multiroom-audio setup.”

“Our clients aren’t those just looking for the cheapest deal,” adds Chris. “They are generally time-starved and want solutions not cardboard boxes. They want to talk to someone that they can count on, that they can trust. For example, if someone wants to buy a Ferrari, they don’t go to different places for the different parts to be built when they return home. They come to us and say, ‘Supply me my Ferrari, and take a couple of laps with me around the track.’” And so on to the track we go. The luxurious imitation home-cum-studio has been set up to showcase automated aural possibilities and beyond, by way of three living rooms, a kitchen, a man-cave, and a garden (and, did we mention the working bar?). The first two living areas are all about minimalism, the ‘Invisible Room’ boasting behind-the-wall speakers that are truly invisible and a television that rises on command from a hidden enclave. All is controlled via an app or small metallic automation pads around the size of a coaster. Here the system is supplied by bespoke experts, Basalte. All TVs come courtesy of Samsung: “The Sound Store provides the best of Samsung for sale.”

CNR KENT AND CROWHURST ST, NEWMARKET 09 520 2105 | THESOUNDSTORE.NZ

People can get anything online. However, the problem is that they don’t know what to do with the equipment once they get it. Here, they can experience the store, and experience the sound.

Next up, is the ‘Bose Room’ where speakers just a few inches tall throw out sound that vibrates through your chest. “There’s a minimalist trend at the moment, with women in particular saying that it’s time to move on regarding their husbands’ large speakers, but they don’t want to deprive him of the sound,” says Peter. “Here are the solutions. Everything is also connected to Apple TV, and Alexa is hooked up for voice control.” The final living room area is called the ‘Sonos Room’ where the stars of the show are undoubtedly the hanging speakers that look more like pendant lights. “With these home systems you can control what music is played through any speakers throughout the home or garden,” Peter says. “We can fully automate your home so that you can switch on the music and the fire ready for when you get home. We’re utilising automation through audio—sound is the first frontier and then you build the automation capabilities as you go.” “I’ve been in the custom-install market for eight years, in charge of automation, home security, access control and so on,” says Chris. “So, a lot of the ideas you see in this store have come from my experience with previous customers, discovering what it is that they want to see. Here at the Sound Store we’ve set it up in a way that people can come in and here and say, ‘Yeah, I get it, that makes sense.’ When you go into traditional tech stores and see 70 televisions linked up next to each other, it’s like being a chameleon in a Smarties box, you don’t know what colour to change in to. We offer a holistic service, and this is the first store of its kind in the country, we believe.”

The pair are regularly commissioned to set-up customers’ baches, second homes and yachts, “from Kaitaia down to Queenstown”. The ‘Sound Bar’ section of the store showcases available sound bar capabilities “with the push of button”, while the ‘Man Cave’ shows off gear like home theatres and PA systems for musicians. “We’ll be a one-stop shop for that too,” says Peter. The garden area currently contains that bar, plants and some super ambient lighting, with plans in place to add murals of outdoor scenes. The fully automated kitchen sports a drop-down coffee maker and microwaves and an automated Samsung fridge with a touchscreen TV that can be used to not only keep track of your favourite shows while cooking, but to see what’s running low inside without having to open the door. You can even access the internal camera on your phone while out shopping should you forget what needs replacing. “The kitchen will also be used for workshops,” says Chris. “To go through what is available on the market and to provide end user training sessions on, say, how to use Spotify. It’s the stuff that people don’t know that we concentrate on, that’s what makes us different. That’s our story.” The Sound Store also cleverly works with other local businesses to showcase the likes of flooring (Creative Flooring), interior design (Allium), nail-free decking (Shadowdeck), blinds solutions (Santa-Fe) and a stone wall (Craft Stone) so that their customers can see the complementary possibilities—ideal for those seeking inspiration during their renovations. “We want to show people how it can all come together,” says Peter. “And we make sure that the person who buys the system walks out of here knowing how to use it. If there are any issues, we’ll come around and sort it, you just don’t get that kind of service anywhere else.”

HOME & DESIGN

Wusthof knives have been made in Solingen Germany by the Wusthof family since 1814. It is no accident that they are still in business 204 years later! This is a company that knows how to manufacture world-class knives, used by high-profile chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver

The broad and natural flowing curve of the blade combined with the weight of the handle makes the cutting motion fluid and easy on the wrist. In case you needed even more convincing, the Wusthof Ikon line is backed with a limited lifetime warranty. The company stands

NOV 2018

Made from a single piece of high carbon stainless steel, they feature double bolsters that provide great balance and heft for effortless cutting. The knives are easy-to-use, thanks to their wellbalanced handle and blade. Even when cutting hard vegetables such as pumpkin and swede, the perfect balance of the Ikon keeps your hand and forearm from tiring. The steel extends all the way to the end of the handle, otherwise known as a full tang. This provides a boost of control as well as a reduced chance of breakage. The ergonomic handle fits perfectly in your hand.

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: ALLURE

It seems rather odd to refer my son’s (often inane) questions to a speaker, but that is exactly what I have been doing ever since the Harman Allure arrived at our house. As my eight-year-old continues to learn about the world we live in and beyond, the barrage of questions is relentless. As a parent you feel duty-bound to answer the who, what, why, when and how manys as honestly as possible (even if I don’t know the answer) but now I have an ally, the know it all, futuristic looking, 360-degree voice-activated speaker called Allure. Working with Amazon Alexa via a dual-band WiFi, the Harman Kardon Allure waits patiently to be addressed

through its four-microphone far-field voice activation system before lighting up its transparent body and then enlightening our lives. Allure scours the internet for answers (often quoting sources too), tells stories and jokes, gives global weather forecasts and even offers useful facts to kick off the day. On top of all this, Allure can also connect to your smart home devices (when on the same platform) and of course, since it’s Harman Kardon, stream music with depth and clarity you’d expect from such a fine audio brand (the built-in subwoofer helps play its part too). With its great sound and eye-catching looks, Allure makes for a stylish talking point (quite literally) of any room and in our case, a very welcome ‘speaker of the house’. — Words: Dave McLeod

DANCING TO YOUR OWN TUNE

Planes, trains and automobiles (ie buses), let’s face it travellers and commuters, the world can be an annoyingly noisy place. It's made even more so when you’re packed in tightly next to your fellow man (or woman) and forced to listen to what’s going on in Shortland Street or who is going to a baking competition. It’s often been said that music is a great leveller. It can adjust your mood, play with your emotions and transport you to a time and place you’d that much rather be—sigh. But unless you’re wearing some form of noise cancelling headphones, the result of Strictly will seep through the gaps and spoil your Zen. TUNE600BTNC (the name just rolls off the tongue doesn’t it?) is JBL’s latest and greatest over-ear noisecancelling, wireless headphones. They’re made to go the distance with durable materials, a battery capacity that lasts 12 hours (recharged in just two hours), plus a detachable cable for endless music and can be folded flat when not in use. They offer a clear and yet basey sound and noise cancelling tech to ensure you listen to what you want to hear. They’re comfortable to wear and with buttons on the ear cups, you can easily connect to the outside world but only when you feel the need. One last thing, to further match your mood the JBL TUNE600BTNCs come in four ‘fresh’ colours—but I think I’ll stick with black. — Words: Dave McLeod

FIVE THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT

EBIKES

Electric bikes have been in New Zealand for a long time now and are becoming more accessible than ever. Whether you’re trying to take the strain out of your commute, or becoming an everyday explorer, an eBike is designed to help you reach your goals faster. If you haven’t yet caught onto the trend, or are questioning whether an eBike is for you, this story might be just what you’ve been waiting for. Verve recently sat down with the team at Bosch eBike Systems to discuss the benefits of pedelec eBikes and how they can change your lifestyle for the better.

1. THE ENVIRONMENT BENEFITS

Pedelec users go easy on the environment, especially if they use their eBikes on a daily basis. Half of all daily car journeys are five kilometres or less, and according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the CO2 emissions of a car are around 40 times higher than those of a bicycle with a battery-powered motor. So why not try leaving the car at home and jumping on an eBike for those short journeys? You’ll be doing a massive favour to the environment, your wallet and your health.

2. KEEPS YOU FIT, MAKES YOU MOBILE

Think eBikes are just for those who want to take it easy? Not at all! Despite the power assistance, eBikers still have to hit the pedals to get moving. What’s great is it’s up to you to decide how much power assistance you want or need! Studies have found that eBikers get on their bikes two to three times more often, and cover much longer distances, than regular cyclists. So now is the time to get on a bike with power assistance to keep fit and get mobile! (Remember though, if you’re feeling adventurous you can always use your eBike as a normal bicycle, by simply turning the assistance off.)

3. FLATTEN THOSE HILLS

Conquer that harrowing hill at the end of your street without breaking a sweat, thanks to the pedal-assist power of an eBike. Who wouldn’t want a helping hand every now and then, or even a permanent tailwind? eBikes provide an 'invisible hand' to give you a gentle push and make cycling uphill almost effortless. Mountain tracks are no longer daunting and headwinds are a distant memory. With Bosch’s latest Sport drive unit, introduced specifically for the New Zealand market in October, riders can now get even more support, with assistance of up to 32km/h.

4. EASY ON THE WALLET

Are you regularly concerned about fuel costs, insurance premiums, car registration or parking charges? Worry no more! eBikes are far less expensive than cars to buy and maintain. The cost of fuel alone for a diesel-powered car is currently around $10.50 per 100km. The same distance on a pedelec costs around 30 cents. Now that is a genuine saving!

5. PERFECT FOR COMMUTING

Sick of getting held up in traffic or searching for that lucky car park on your way to work? Then the eBike is for you. Perfect for zipping around a city and covering short distances to work, pedelecs help you cover greater distances more quickly and easily—so you can arrive at work feeling fresh. A lot of people rule out commuting by bike because of the mess—the extra clothes and the sweat factor. However, the cruising that eBikes provide saves you some effort, so you can still burn those calories and arrive at work without looking like you just ran a marathon!

JOURNEYS

But perhaps the most intriguing proposal for some galactic probing—and one that promises to be among the most immediately accessible to the public— takes the form a hotel. The celestial capsule, called the Aurora Station, is the brainchild of tech start-up Orion Span and is set to cost $135 million to build. The project was unveiled at the Space 2.0 Summit in San Jose, California, in April, and is set to open in 2022. “Our goal is to make space accessible to all,” says CEO and founder of Orion Span, Frank Bunger. “Upon launch, Aurora Station goes into service immediately, bringing travellers into space quickly and at a lower price point than ever seen before.” A lower price point it may be, but it’ll still cost a mouthwatering million-plus bucks per night, with a likely minimum of a 12-night stay. Initially, there will be room for four guests and a couple of crew—likely former astronauts—all of whom will be able to experience zero gravity, freely floating about the hotel at will. They will orbit the Earth at 320km, every 90 minutes, taking in around 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. When first launched, the hotel will measure 35x14feet, a comparable size to a Gulfstream Jet.

Bunger says that the architecture, designed by a group led by Fran Eichstadt, the main man behind the International Space Station Enterprise module, is such that capacity can be easily enhanced, meaning it can grow with market demand “like a city growing skyward on Earth”. Eventually, celestial apartments will be available, enabling owners to “live, visit, or sublease their space condo”. Bunger adds that thanks to new rocket-launch companies that start up “almost every week” it’s becoming ever easier and cheaper to reach the stars, thus enabling projects such as his to develop. New Zealand too, has of course, played its part thanks to Rocket Lab who launched their first rocket earlier this year. American businessman Dennis Tito became the first space tourist when he took a 2001 flight to the International Space Station, thought to have cost $29 million, followed by pioneers such as former Microsoft executive Charles Simoyi and Anousha Ansari, the first female space tourist. Richard Branson’s spaceflight company Virgin Galactic launched its first successful rocket in April, with the aim of eventually offering short tourist trips to the edge of space around 100km above the Earth for $360,000. The British businessman reckons to have already signed up the likes of Tom Hanks, Katy Perry and Leonardo DiCaprio for some high altitude star-gazing. The Aurora Station space hotel, however, would be a world- (or galactic) first. “We’re not selling a ‘hey, let’s go to the beach’ equivalent in space,” Bunger tells Bloomberg. “We’re selling the experience of being an astronaut.” Refundable deposits of $107,000 per person for stays at the space hotel are now being taken. It would sure promise to be the ultimate in Instagram bragging rights.

NOV 2018

Furthering the potential for the eventual mass exploration—and possible colonisation—of selected swaths of space, earlier this year the UK government’s Department of Transport announced that it had green-lighted the Space Industry Bill that allows “the first commercial space launch from UK soil”. This will enable private firms to build a facility and launch satellites from Britain. It also opens up the exciting possibility of the construction of spaceports.

Other cool experiences include the chance to be involved with scientific research and even grow your own space food in the form of edible plants for the “ultimate souvenir” to show off upon your return to Earth. If you can’t wait that long, high-speed wireless internet means you can livestream with friends and family.

Last year Danish architect Bjarke Ingels announced designs for a space simulation complex to be built near Dubai to mimic conditions on Mars to further boost “humanity’s march into space”. The project is called the Mars Science City. Billed as the world’s “most sophisticated building”, it will be built using 3D printing technology and house labs that perfectly imitate the conditions of the Red Planet, aided by the desert setting. The largest space simulation city ever, Mars Science City will span 17.5 hectares and be home to a team of scientists for a year in the hope of then developing the first settlement of Mars within the next 100 years.

SO/ AUCKLAND THE CITY'S NEWEST DESIGN HOTEL BRINGS THE WORLD TO NEW ZEALAND

International luxury lifestyle hotel brand SO/ will open its first hotel in Auckland with renowned Kiwi fashion innovators WORLD announced as the signature design partner. Located in the heart of the city and occupying the former Reserve Bank, SO/ Auckland will join an artistic portfolio of just seven very individual hotels worldwide. SO/ Auckland will shatter conventional hotel norms and is set to become the city’s hottest destination for locals and visitors alike. “The arrival of SO/ brings a new level of design audacity and boldness to the Auckland hotel scene,” says SO/ Auckland general manager Stephen Gould. “The decision to launch SO/ in Auckland comes at a time when tourism in New Zealand is booming and reinforces that this stunning natural beauty is also a bustling metropolis and the mustvisit destination of the South Pacific.”

Benny Castles, designer and director for WORLD explains, “We created a stylised topographical map of Auckland and overinflated the role of volcanoes. The emblem needed to be both nostalgic and futuristic, appealing to Auckland’s mythical past but setting itself in the future of what this city will become. The swirling, hypnotic effect feels as though you’re looking directly into the eye of a volcano, reflecting that feeling of stepping into a boutique hotel; a hypnotic experience where the outside world is left behind and a new experience begins.” The ground floor of the hotel has been creatively fitted out by Dutch design house, Moooi and is inspired by founder and renowned creative, Marcel Wanders who is famous for creating multilayered sensory experiences.

Each SO/ hotel is an artistic vision brought to life by celebrated names from the world of fashion and design. In Mauritius there is Mr Kenzo Takada; in Bangkok Monsieur Christian Lacroix; renowned duo Viktor & Rolf in Berlin; and in Singapore, Karl Lagerfeld the emblem creator. WORLD will bring the same spirit of extravagance and boldness to what promises to be one of New Zealand’s most exciting hotels.

Challenging traditional hotel concepts and with a ‘just say SO’ attitude, Stephen says guests can expect excellent service with contemporary flair.

“We needed a designer with an approach as bold and enterprising as the SO/ brand; energetic, social, bursting with individual character but also inherently a reflection of Auckland. WORLD is a playful mix of sophistication and dynamic style and therefore was an obvious choice. SO/ Auckland is an avant-garde masterpiece imaginatively inspired by WORLD,” explains Stephen. Forget traditional uniforms: WORLD has been on a journey with the SO/ Auckland team for more than three years to create an emblem, a signature design print, artwork, wallpaper designs for the signature suites, cushions for the chauffeur cars and attire for the staff that encourages individual expressionism.

“The HI SO rooftop transports you to another world and in equal parts feels like you’re no longer in Auckland while offering the best vista of Rangitoto and the City of Sails. Finally, Auckland will be able to offer somewhere both locals and visitors will want to hang out, see and be seen.”

The emblem reflects the volcanic history of Auckland, the natural beauty of New Zealand and the history of the building itself, the former Reserve Bank which at one time housed the country’s gold reserves.

"There is no dull lobby but rather a bar that looks like it might be the meeting spot for celebrities, the fashion elite and rockstars,” Stephen says. “Staff don’t wear name-tags and you can help yourself to the minibar because everything’s free!

SO/ Auckland will offer a taste of French inspiration at Harbour Society restaurant on the fifteenth floor, helmed by French chef Marc de Passorio, former owner of Michelin-starred restaurant, L’Esprit de la Violette. Marc sold L’Esprit de la Violette before choosing Auckland as his next culinary home. Inspired by its surrounds, the 130-room hotel will also feature a café, Club Signature lounge, SO Spa, SO Fit and indoor heated pool. SOFITEL.COM | ACCORHOTELS.COM

Shoot in RAW file format! Especially if you’re a beginner. You will then be able to edit your photo and make corrections to them if need be. It’s easy to try and copy the big influencers on Instagram. But my biggest advice would be to develop your own style.

Instagram is a great tool for a photographer. Thanks to instant feedback from followers, the creator gets an incentive to take photos every day; each photo more beautiful than the last. And, look around; there are so many talented people on the platform you can collaborate with or take inspiration from.

#PEOPLETOFOLLOW

Canon: Through My Lens looks at the photographic journey of four photographers. Through a combination of hard work and lessons learnt along the way, they’ve slowly mastered their craft, and gained a loyal following. Here are their top tips for aspiring photographers.

JAMES RELF-DYER @JAMESRELFDYER

SCOTT RANKIN @OTHELLONINE

Try to work with the ‘Rule of Thirds’ in all photos you take. Imagine your photo split into thirds horizontally and vertically, giving you nine segments. Try and position key elements of the photo along the horizontal and vertical lines. In many striking landscape photographs, the horizon is in the upper third, and the rest of the image falls below that.

Practise your craft. Take as many photos as you can. When travelling, look for the little things happening around you and the way objects interact with the environment. Try to capture that interaction in as many ways as you can.

AUSTRALIA'S COFFS COAST A NATURE LOVERS PARADISE

When it comes to travel, we often think we need to head off to farflung foreign lands to experience untouched rainforests and pristine beaches. But just a short flight away in the land down under, Coffs Harbour on the eastern seaboard offers all of this and more, giving it the leading edge as a travel destination. For many years, Coffs Harbour (or Coffs as the locals call it) played second fiddle to popular Byron Bay. But that is rapidly changing as this amazing destination offers a number of qualities that give it the leading edge as a nature lovers travel destination. About a three-hour drive south of Coolangatta or a fivehour drive north from Sydney, the first thing that strikes you about Coffs is its location. The city of 75,000 residents sits on a coastal strip of land where the Great Dividing Range meets the sea giving it one of the most liveable sub-tropical climates in Australia. The region boasts more than 90km of golden beaches, most within a 10-minute drive of unspoilt rainforests and national parks—the area’s other great attraction. Whether you are looking to check into one of the beautiful beachfront resorts or an Airbnb in the country, you will want to start exploring this remarkable area as soon as you arrive. From local cultural tours offered by the traditional elders of the land, the Gumbaynggir Nation, to checking out events such as World Rally Championships, you will be spoilt for choice. Day One. First stop should be the Moonee Beach Nature Reserve and the famous “Look at me now Headland” an important local Aboriginal site affording amazing views of the Solitary Islands. You will often encounter large mobs of eastern grey kangaroos lazing in the sun wondering what all the fuss is about.

Palm-fringed rainforests are a defining feature of the area making it a nature lover’s paradise and to experience this in all its glory, check out Forest Sky Pier at Sealy Lookout a short drive west off the main highway. The suspended pier stands 15m above the Orara East State Forest floor and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the coastline. Look down and you will see first-hand the lush subtropical vegetation which supports a significant native bird population and wildlife including koalas. Check out Treetops Nature Adventure experience—an adrenalin rush that is a favourite with both locals and visitors. The Coffs Harbour CBD offers great shopping, in particular Harbour Drive and Coffs Central. Thursdays are particularly vibrant as locals flock to the growers' market in City Square. Just a short drive away you will come across gorgeous coastal villages such as Woolgoolga, a coastal spot popular with surfers and which offers a great café scene. Moonee Beach, voted in the top 10 beaches in Australia and immensely popular with families, has a great local shopping plaza which includes a heated indoor pool and kids’ activity centre Lalaland. And don’t miss Sawtell—a beautiful tree lined cosy enclave—which offers an amazing café lifestyle and a string of upmarket boutiques. When it comes to night dining options look no further than Coffs Jetty with its serious strip of eating and drinking establishments. You will no doubt see a range of local seafood on the menu as the waters off the Coffs Coast are renowned for their abundant supply and diversity of fresh fish. The local Fisherman’s Co-Op supplies the region’s top restaurants. Day Two. Take the opportunity to drive up Waterfall Way to Dorrigo located on a plateau overlooking the region. A few minutes from the village is Dangar Falls a beautiful

30-metre waterfall set amidst scenic farmland. On your way back, don’t miss visiting the Rainforest Centre and enjoy a walk out on the Skywalk platform to experience spectacular 360-degree views of the verdant World Heritage Gondwana Rainforest. Halfway down Waterfall Way, you will take immense delight in exploring Bellingen – a hip and trendy haven for artists and creatives that offers an incredible range of boutique shops and eateries. Worth a visit is The Bellingen Butter Factory—a cooperative for local artisans offering quality art, clothing and homewares. Or if you are in the area on the third Saturday of the month, a must-do visit is the Bellingen Community Market renowned across Australia for its array of local craft.

"Orara East State Forest offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the coastline" Day Three. You might wish to take in the beauty of country areas such as Coramba or Nana Glen and enjoy a food and wine tasting experience at Two Tails Winery or head south and explore beautiful Urunga with its spectacular onekilometre boardwalk and wetlands. A little further south, Nambucca Heads beckons, and Shelly Beach—another popular destination named in the top 10 beaches in Australia. Head up to the lookout and you will experience views to die for as the Nambucca River estuary meets the Pacific Ocean. Whether you are after natural scenic adventures, walks, surfing, swimming or shopping, trust me, the Coffs Coast is an amazing destination and will leave you wanting more. Words: Robyn Simon

World’s Costliest Cities

52

Earlier this year a rather questionable international index named Hamilton the forty-fifth most expensive city in the world, its costs comparable to London (39th) and ahead of Auckland (51st), Wellington (104th) and Christchurch (113th). Claiming to use “authoritative sources”, the Numbeo Index ranks 536 international cities based on the price of consumer goods such as shopping, transport and utility bills. In New Zealand, at least, most economists believe the results to miss the mark, bearing in mind Auckland’s $1 million average house price is double that of Hamilton’s and the average rents are $540 and $400 respectively. The widely respected Economist Intelligent Unit recently named Singapore the world’s most expensive city for the fifth straight year, with nothing to separate Paris and Zurich in second place. Interestingly, Asia-Pacific and European cities dominate the top 10, with New York and Los Angeles slipping (or rising?) in the costly stakes to numbers 13 and 14, while Tokyo dropped seven places from last year to 11. As recently as 2013, Tokyo was the world’s most expensive city to live in. Paris has held its place in the top 10 for the last 15 years.

1

with two cities on the list (Zurich and Geneva). Staple goods in Seoul average a staggering 50% higher mark-up over those in New York, part of the reason why the South Korean capital came in sixth, while soaring housing costs in Sydney propelled it four places to tenth, with one survey showing houses in the Australian hub to be over 12 times the average income, placing it second only two Hong Kong in housing unaffordability around the world. The report is based on the price of 160 products and services in each city such as food, clothing, household supplies, utility bills, transportation and private school fees, which amounts to a cost of living score rather than how much it costs tourists to visit—though likely there will also be a relationship between those two. Interestingly, and maybe pertinently, there isn’t so much overlap between the world’s most expensive cities and those with the best quality of life (according to world-leading HR consultancy firm, Mercer), with only Zurich and Geneva making the top 10 in both. Beyond that, none of the top 10 priciest cities are listed between tenth and twenty-first best places to live either, though Wellington places a highly respectable fifteenth in terms of life quality. And our dear Auckland? That places third.

Singapore has long been Asia’s Silicon Valley. It hosts the eastern headquarters of an array of tech giants such as Google, and is considered a global hotspot for start-up companies. By 2020, it is estimated that one in 30 of its residents will be millionaires—a projected increase of 18% over its regional rival, Hong Kong, who placed fourth on the Economist’s most expensive city list—which is one of the dearest places on Earth to fill your pantry. Singapore is the most expensive place in the world to buy a car—those priced US$20,000 in the USA can cost up to US$90,000 in the island nation—while the average bottle of table wine is more than 30 bucks. Oslo’s six-place rise sees it make the top 10 for the first time (Norway is the world’s priciest nation to go out for a pint), while Switzerland is the only country

OUTBACK OPALS

I remember rolling into the Australian outback mining town of Coober Pedy as a backpacker and feeling part-overwhelmed, part-awed by its outright oddness. The sun was setting, and the sky bruised, casting an eerie, purple glow over its desolate yet beguiling landscape. There’s no other town on Earth quite like this one. You could go as far to say that it almost feels not of this Earth. There’s even an abandoned movie prop spaceship leftover from the film Pitch Black that was shot nearby. Adding to Coober Pedy’s otherworldliness, an area to its outer reaches, known as Moon Plain, is famed for its floor of sparkling gypsum and marine fossils that were dumped by ancient icebergs. One hundred and fifty million years ago, this area sat beneath an ocean. When the waters receded the exposed land cracked, and the openings filled with sandy silica minerals from the former seabed that alchemised into colourful jewels resulting in what is now the opal capital of the world. Where it was once submerged by seawaters, many of the 3,500 residents now live beneath its land. ‘Coober Pedy’ comes from Aborigine words kupa, meaning ‘white man’, and piti, which means ‘hole’. Forget the hobbits of Middle-earth, the hearty folks of Coober Pedy—where daytime temperatures can exceed 50 degrees and plummet to zero come nightfall—have carved out a subterranean society replete with museums, bars, theatres, hotels and churches. There’s even a private underground swimming pool, and a campsite in an abandoned mine. Superstitious local tribes were said to be startled by the early settlers’ penchant for underground dwelling, even if the shady sandstone enclaves did offer much welcome shelter from the relentless heat.

You may not have been to Coober Pedy, positioned 840km north of Adelaide, but chances are you’ve seen it (even though you’ve probably not seen the film Pitch Black!). The rusty landscape has served as the backdrop for movies such as Red Planet, Mad Max III and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, as well as for an episode of the reality TV series, Amazing Race. The town is unofficially nicknamed the ‘Hollywood of the Outback’. Filmmaking aside, what makes this region so alluring for would-be millionaire miners is that the quantity of opals cannot be calculated through exploratory drilling with high-spec equipment, rather one simply has to get digging. Technically, anyone can apply for a permit to reserve a chunk of land to explore (though in practice it’s a lot more complicated than that). The mining boom began back in 1915 when a teenage boy discovered a shiny gem, and many of the early pioneers were soldiers returning from the trenches of the first world war, glad to be able to put their excavation skills to use. Their underground bunkers became known as ‘dugouts’. The land remains littered with mounds of sandstone and peppered with holes from previous digs and several signs warn visitors to beware of unmarked drops. Another sign at the Cobber Pedy Drive-in Theatre requests that patrons don’t bring in their explosives. Such quirky inconveniences—and potentially lethal hazards—are simply part of life. — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

‘Coober Pedy’ comes from Aborigine words kupa, meaning ‘white man’, and piti, which means ‘hole’.

” EXTRA GEMS Coober Pedy accounts for approximately 70% of the world’s opal production, while the majority of its population work in the mining industry. Around 150,000 tourists pass through the Visitor Information Centre annually—the town is a popular stopover for those heading to Uluru. Other nearby attractions include Lake Eyre, a sprawling, salted pan that shimmers like glass in the desert. There’s also the opportunity to join the local postmen on their twice-weekly mail runs to some of the world’s most remote ranches such as Anna Creek that covers an area the size of Belgium. On the fringes of Coober Pedy, a 5,310km fence, the world’s longest continuous construction, shields the country’s southern sheep from the north’s dingoes.

Nearby, in 1964, British driver Donald Campbell set the world land speed record reaching 649km/h. Coober Pedy hosts the world’s hottest golf course (with tongue-in-cheek signs that warns players to keep off the grass—even though there isn’t any). If you can’t stand the heat, glow-in-the-dark balls are available for night rounds. The hub also hosts yearly events such as the Coober Pedy OZ Mineral Races, Queen of the Desert Festival, and the Opal Festival. The town’s water supply is piped in from a bore 25km to the northeast. This isolated opal mining town may not scream sophistication but it’s cosmopolitan enough to rival many a European city, home to around 50 different nationalities.

6 AM

Uhhhh my alarm clock goes off, I generally lie there for about 15 minutes then get up and start getting ready for the gym. I find if I don’t go to the gym or do some form of exercise, I have a crap day.

7 AM

You will normally find me at the gym doing a 30-45-minute session to get me going for the day. A healthy mind, a healthy life, I say. I play an awesome playlist though Spotify that gets me going, and bam, the day has started.

You will generally find me out with a friend having a coffee, lunch and a general catch-up. I think it is so important to step outside of your busy lifestyle and find time for you to have a ramble with someone who will listen.

5 PM

Most times at 5pm, I am seriously sitting in the most horrendous Auckland traffic. It’s nothing exciting at all. I wish I could say something else!

8 AM

I aim to have breakfast most mornings but sometimes I miss it. I know, sad. If it's not at a local café, I'll make a simple serving of porridge to last me until lunchtime, with an almond mocha to go! Can’t go wrong with a good coffee.

10 AM

This is the time I allow myself to go through all my work emails, prioritise what is coming up, and do my one-hour's worth of life admin for the day. I normally check in on social media, see what is happening. If I don’t have meetings with clients and brand partners, I will be liaising with them via phone and email, and working on upcoming ideas and pitches.

3 PM

I am always a planner, and such a go-getter. Each day I look for things to do at the weekend or seek out inspirational ideas for my next holiday. It makes me excited for what’s to come, and where am I off to next. I know right now, for the next five weekends, I am out of Auckland and travelling the country.

6 PM

Most nights I'm invited to an event or launch but I do try to keep these to a minimum. Then I can be found enjoying a night in in my comfy robe on the couch. It's hard to do though, sometimes.

5 MINUTES WITH JEWELLERY DESIGNER 62

LOUISE DOUGLAS Who/what inspires your collections?

I am inspired by the intricacies of the ocean and the natural world in general. I also love art and fashion, drawing influence from Victorian and art nouveau jewellery, with my own modern twist. I enjoy the untraditional beauty in nature too, such as erosion and decay, encouraging the viewer to appreciate nature's subtle imperfections.

Your aesthetic, summed up in five words?

Organic, handmade, nature-inspired, feminine and romantic.

Describe the people who wear your jewellery.

I sell my work all kinds of women and also to many men buying for the special women in their lives. I create a varied collection from small delicate pieces for a more conservative client to bolder pieces for a women who wants to stand out. I find women and men who buy my jewellery like that it's unique, keepsake and NZ made. My jewellery tends to relate to a free and organic sensibility, but it also has a femininity that speaks to a woman's desire to look and feel beautiful.

Your most popular piece right now?

Our Honey Bee Necklace closely followed by our new Dragonfly Necklace.

Your most popular piece ever?

Hands down our Gold Lace Disc Necklace, people also love our LuLu pearl studs.

What’s in store for 2019?

We are working on a unique, mix and match wedding ring collection. I want to bring something less traditional in an accessible price range to the market. So stay tuned!

Anything else you would like Verve readers to know?

I love sending my little creations out into the world. When I see my work displayed in a shop cabinet or being worn by a happy customer, it gives me a real sense of satisfaction. It makes all the hard work worth it! For full interview with Louise Douglas visit vervemagazine.co.nz

GIFTING STYLE 66

Gift Voucher SIGNATURE STYLE

I love it when I get a gift voucher recipient ring me to book their appointment. For most, you can sense their excitement during the phonecall as they’re really keen to get started on whichever service they’ve been gifted. Working with people who are excited about the work we are going to do together is just loads of fun. Occasionally ‘though I will have a nervous ‘giftee’ call. I often wonder if they are seeing the gift voucher they received as a subtle (or in their mind not so subtle) prompt that they need to spend a bit more time thinking about the way they look. Interestingly it’s not usually the case. Most Gift Voucher purchasers genuinely feel that the gift they are giving is pretty cool and will be enjoyable for the receiver. Often they’ve spent some time with me themselves and want to share the value of that experience with someone else. Perhaps a husband has thought about the number of times his wife has said “I have nothing to wear – I hate all of my clothes!” and pragmatically thought he could solve the dilemma or vice-versa.

True vintage style together with carefullycurated individuality is an enduring fashion trend around the world. Painted Bird provides a handpicked collection of European truly vintage one-off pieces of event and casual wear for women and men. Sustainable and ethically-sourced fashionable art includes colours, fabrics and garment workmanship found in high street boutiques. Personalised attention with an instore stylist combined with old-fashioned service is available to you every day. Be your own Bird, at Painted Bird.

For me, if a client has purchased a gift voucher I feel they are bestowing an enormous honour upon me – it demonstrates that they trust that I will deliver a truly fabulous experience for the person they have bought the voucher for. As such, I put in enormous effort to deliver on their expectation of Signature Style and the clients I work with get the benefit of that. If I have a ‘unsure of the motive’ gift voucher recipient to work with I work very hard to make sure they feel totally spoiled during their time working with me. It is true; I have sometimes had employers gift a session with me to an employee who needs to ‘step up’ in their work attire. It’s a non-confrontational way to have that conversation. I usually have received a heads up from the employer that this is what they are doing, so I make sure that I cover off their concerns in that session. I know that as humans we all have bad days and if we are feeling uncomfortable sometimes we are not at our best, but I have found that no matter what the circumstances my clients may be in, they are quite simply the loveliest people around. WORDS: JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES

“We are recognising burnout as something that’s just like diabetes,” psychiatrist Dr Shimi Kang tells Global News. “The same connection is emerging with the mental health diagnosis—burnout is a lifestylerelated condition.” New Zealand’s Association of Salaried Medical Specialists recently warned of a “burnout crisis” affecting around half of specialists, putting patients’ lives at risk. A 2016 YouGov study of the UK workforce concluded more than half of Brits are showing serious sign of burning out and according to a US study, 95% of human resource departments state burnout to be the main inhibitor of turnover. Though no company model is immune, those with more than 2,500 are especially at risk. But it’s not just productivity rates and sales figures that are affected, health and home life suffer through burnout, too “You don’t wake up one morning and all of a sudden ‘have burnout’,” writes psychologist Sherrie Bourg, author of High Octane Women: How Superachievers Can Avoid Burnout, for Psychology Today. “Its nature is much more insidious, creeping up over time like a slow leak, which makes it much harder to recognise.”

So how does one recognise burnout?

While stress is usually relatively fleeting and can even serve as a spur to get stuff done, burnout is likely to result in a drop in your professional productivity, even though you may feel you’re doing just as much—or even more—work. Dr Kang says that we’re mostly equipped to deal with bouts of short-term stress, but burnout—the result of ongoing, chronic stress— is a

Short term stress is the manifestation of our fightor-flight response, raising adrenaline and cortisol (our ‘stress’ hormone) levels and giving us a boost of energy. Way back when, it would have helped us outrun or outthink giant beasts that wanted to eat us, but nowadays it’s more likely to help us make that deadline or deliver that presentation with panache. But while it has served as a highly useful evolutionary tool, our bodies are ill-equipped to deal with a constant state of such enhanced alertness, and eventually it will have the opposite effect. Other physical burnout symptoms include loss of appetite (or, paradoxically, weight gain), regular stomach upsets, coughs and colds, headaches, tight shoulders, or a stiff neck. You may feel emotionally detached from your work, trapped, helpless, or in a continuous state of anxiousness or self-doubt. Another common symptom of burnout is procrastination, which of course simply serves to fuel that fear fire. Switching off completely may not be the best medicine (but regularly switching off those devices is), rather finding other ways to stimulate the brain. Take up a hobby (one that is wholly unrelated to work), read more, mediate, eat well, exercise and harvest social interactions with friends and family not through Facebook, but in real life. Make daily to-do lists, get better organised, but know that you are not perfect, and that you will make mistakes. Take proper lunchbreaks, don’t be afraid to ask for help from colleges or to speak with your boss or human resources team if things are getting too much. Accept your limitations and learn to say “no”. Ultimately, be prepared that you may need to make some serious life considerations, for no job is worth more than your mental health. “A lot of coping with burnout is knowing what you can change and what you cannot change,” Juan Sanchez, professor of management and international business at Florida International University, tells the Miami Herald. “When you have the overwhelming feeling you can’t get results, it is time to make a change.”

NOV 2018

Do you lack motivation? Do you feel mentally drained, physically exhausted and find it difficult to concentrate? Do you believe yourself to be underappreciated in the workplace, and convinced that you’re being underpaid? Depending on the timeframe, regularity and the severity of such emotions, it may be that you’re simply stressed and in need of a break or good holiday; or, it may be that you’re experiencing overachiever syndrome, more commonly called ‘burnout’—a far sharper affliction and one that is far more consequential.

whole different matter. Burnout feeds burnout, not only affecting the areas of the brain that modulate our stress response, but “making our brains more vulnerable to neurotoxins”.

OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

CREATING A ROADMAP OF THE EYE Our eyesight is truly precious, it allows us to function and enjoy our lives in ways that we often take for granted. Many sight-threatening eye conditions damage our eyes so slowly that there are often no symptoms until they are very advanced. The key to the preventing permanent vision loss from these sight-threatening conditions is early detection, along with careful monitoring, and prompt action when required. At Mortimer Hirst, we are dedicated to providing the most up-to-date, cutting-edge methods to deliver the best in eye care, to every single one of our patients.

vision loss. It is often symptomless until the later stages. Glaucoma occurs due to damage at the level of the optic nerve, the cable that connects the eye to the brain. Once the nerve fibres are lost, they cannot be recovered. In order to prevent nerve fibre damage, early detection is paramount, as vision loss can be prevented with current treatments. The OCT essentially measures the thickness of the optic nerve, thus can assist your optometrist in detecting even the earliest stages of glaucoma. Additionally, an OCT is essential in monitoring the success of glaucoma treatment.

An optical coherence tomographer, or OCT for short, is a device that allows the accurate measurement of the parts of the eye vital to normal vision. An OCT does this without even touching the eye; light rays and advanced computer analysis are used to generate highly detailed images of the important parts of the eye. This device enables your optometrist to have greater insight into your eye health, and therefore your eyesight. Importantly, it can help to detect even the subtlest areas that may be of concern before permanent vision loss occurs from several conditions including: age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, myopia and keratoconus. Below is a brief overview of these conditions and how the OCT is essential to detecting and managing these conditions. The optometrists at Mortimer Hirst are also dedicated to patient education, visit our website mortimerhirst.co.nz to learn more about these conditions and you can now even book in to see one of our specialist optometrists through our website!

MYOPIA (SHORT-SIGHTEDNESS)

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition where the central vision becomes increasingly blurry and distorted, eventually being lost completely. Glasses and contact lenses cannot correct AMD vision loss due to it is permanent. However, the OCT can establish a precise map of the macula (the affected area), and detect early changes often before symptoms are experienced. Then with appropriate management, which is informed by the OCT results, vision loss can be prevented or minimised. The OCT can also assist your optometrist in deciding the urgency of referrals to an ophthalmologist (AMD specialist) if required.

GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a condition where the pressure that keeps the eyeball round gets too high and causes the peripheral vision to progressively reduce and eventually can result in complete

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is often incorrectly viewed as an inconvenience rather than a sight-threatening condition. Myopia is related to abnormal growth of the eyeball, which leads to blurred vision in the distance. As the eyeball lengthens, the glasses or contact lens prescription increases. A longer (more short-sighted) eyeball is associated with an increased risk of potentially sight-threatening conditions, such as retinal detachments. Myopia often arises in childhood and progresses into early adult life. The optometrists at Mortimer Hirst employ various methods for slowing the rate of eye growth, therefore preventing the risk of sight-threatening complications. The OCT plays an important role in this, as it allows your optometrist to accurately measure the length of your eyeball, and therefore provides a more accurate means of monitoring how effective the treatment to slow myopia is.

KERATOCONUS

Keratoconus is a progressive condition where the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye) becomes increasingly thin and distorted, compromising vision. New Zealand has a particularly high rate of keratoconus. In many of these cases, glasses are inadequate in correcting vision, and specifically designed contact lenses are often required. As every eye that has keratoconus is different this often results in a highly complex lens design. The contact lens specialists at Mortimer Hirst utilise the precise measurements from the OCT to assist in the fitting of these contact lenses. In addition, the progression of keratoconus can be monitored, and referrals for further interventions can be arranged where required. From childhood to later life, the OCT can assist your optometrist in measuring and monitoring the eye conditions discussed above. The highly detailed information that the OCT provides ensures that your eyes are cared for in the best possible way. — Words: Oliver Munro / mortimerhirst.co.nz

Threads are made from the same material as a surgical suture, but with a unique design of three-dimensional helical barbs around the thread to enable targeted treatment of skin laxity. Through small insertion points at strategic locations on the face, the fine, barbed thread is tunnelled under the skin to traction and elevate the overlying soft tissues. As we age, there is displacement of tissue south on the face, and we lose the ‘triangle of youth’. This manifests as heaviness around the nose, mouth and jawline, creating nasolabial folds, marionette lines and jowls. By placing a barbed strut underneath the skin in specific areas, we can minimise some of the fullness and descent that develops with advancing years.

The procedure tends to be well-tolerated with small amounts of local anaesthetic administered at the entry points only. The procedure takes approximately one hour, depending on the number of threads required on each side of the face. The results are evident immediately, and the recovery time is minimal. We pride ourselves on personalised treatments and can advise you on the most appropriate approach to help you be the best you.

The threads allow us to reposition the overlying tissue, and recontour the face. This is through a dual mechanism of action—there is immediate lifting from the traction the thread places on the underlying tissue, and a volumising process as the body dissolves and scars around the thread. Both processes lead to recontouring of the face, particularly in the lower third, where we see threads play their biggest role. The threads themselves are absorbable, with the body typically having dissolved them by six months. Whilst the physical lifting capacity of the suture diminishes as

EQUINE EQUANIMITY

Australian-based Kiwi Sue Spence has won several awards—with more likely on the way—including Gold Coast Business Woman of the Year for Community Dedication through her pioneering licensed programme, Horses Helping Humans, and its charitable affiliate, the Horse Whispering Youth Program.

doing a workshop for a small group of women regarding self-esteem, body image and boundaries. I took my horse along, and all of these nicely dressed women in heels were wondering what was going on! I told them that before we start, I need to show them something.”

This most inspirational lady is also an author and public speaker who recently debuted her first New Zealand Horses Helping Humans workshop, with her latest licensee Kimberly McIntyre, at the McIntyre family estate, Makoura Lodge, Apiti, last month.

Sue then adopted her “Wonder Woman pose”, rocking back on her heels with relaxed shoulders and imaging she was wearing a big shiny belt buckle. She continues: “I just put one finger up and asked my horse, very respectfully to back up, and he was just backing and backing and backing. I turned to the women, and, holding that same body language, said that this is what ‘no’ looks like. ‘No’ is not a word, but a projection of your self-respect. Some of the women started to cry because they’d been told over and over that they’ve got to learn to say ‘no’ but didn’t know what it looked like.”

Another licensee will begin in Taranaki later this year with hopefully many more to follow (the workshops are licensed throughout Australia, also). The purpose of the workshops is to identify personality types and improve people’s relationships with others by tweaking their body language via skills learnt through horsemanship, or ‘horse whispering’. Working in conjunction with businesses, psychologists, schools and community groups, the philosophy has benefited everyone from troubled and disadvantaged youths through to CEOs of international organisations. I ask Sue, who has a 40 years’ equestrian experience, including competitive show-jumping, if the program was a hard sell when she decided to hone in on horse whispering a decade ago. “No, I’ve never even had to advertise! I have a background in health education, so it started when I was

A lady in the audience worked for a youth program and it all snowballed from there. Now Sue’s story has appeared in press the world over and Virgin Australia will, for a month, be showing a mini-documentary about her work on their planes. “To open New Zealand licenced centres is just so overwhelming,” beams Sue. “My dream was always to have Horses Helping Humans here because in my book, my whole story is about my struggles growing up in Christchurch, so being able to take that back to New

Following the youth workshops, the group do a full agility show, with trophies handed out at the end. “These are people that have struggled with things like anxiety, frustration and ADHD, and it’s incredible to see them take on these new skills and apply them to everyday life,”

“No matter what you go through in life, you can still get ahead and achieve something” on the ground. “We are sharing the skill of professional horsemanship,” she says, “which is about trust and respect. When you work at that level of expertise, you must be conscious of your adrenaline levels and body language. Sometimes a work team might come to me about a bullying allegation—which is serious nowadays— and I will look at them and say, ‘Actually, you just have a really strong personality who is not aware of their body language and energy is incredibly intimidating to other personality types.’ Usually when I start working with that person they are quite horrified that they are making others feel nervous.” This negative energy is picked up immediately by the steeds. Some may even attempt to run away because their handler’s “energy is too high and their body language predatory”. “Horsemanship ground skills are a lot like dog agility,” says Sue. “People learn to back the horse up or ask them to circle with just a simple move of the body. People must portray what I call ‘tai chi energy’ as opposed to ‘chip chop karate energy’! They must learn to breathe out before they speak, to soften their shoulders and relax the belly. We get them to get the horse from a trot to a walk then back up to a trot using just their energy, no voice or hand signals. The horses act as a perfect mirror for them to know how they make others feel when they walk into a room—that others are galloping on the inside.”

says Sue. “My passion now is to get this into schools. To normalise and educate about emotional health and mental illness. It’s about conscious communication, there’s a huge lack of that in life now. People are pushed and so stressed and speaking out of reactive mode, they don’t have the skills to drop down into a responsive mode. That’s the power of Horses Helping Humans, and it’s the only programme like it anywhere.”

Do the horses get a kick out of it all?

“They do! I think my horses are very lucky because they’re not racehorses, they’re not up at 4am, but they’re teaching people how to relax. That’s another thing that many very highly driven people don’t understand is that you can be highly productive while being conscious of being relaxed at the same time. When you learn how to control your stress levels, productivity rises.” I ask Sue what she has learnt from her horses over the years and the answer is a very simple—and beautiful— one: “stillness”. “You need that to get results. My whole career was show jumping and eventing, everything was fast, fast, fast. Natural horsemanship changes the equation and you become very conscious of how your energy is affecting another being.” __ Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces HORSESHELPINGHUMANSAUSTRALIA.COM

NOV 2018

Sue stresses that Horses Helping Humans is not equine therapy, and there is no riding—rather everything is done

“It is such a powerful tool that has gotten outcomes incredibly quickly with things like getting young people to reengage with studying, or problematic personality clashes at work,” says Sue. “It’s so important that those in the corporate world especially are aware of personality profiling and body language because business is all about relationships. If you don’t have a strong team that understand each other then that’s when holes begin to appear.”

//

Sue has ADHD, an unknown condition back in the 1960s that led to her “sitting at the front of the class with a dunce hat on” and bouts of anxiety. A later breast cancer diagnosis led to a double mastectomy. “My message is that no matter what you go through in life, you can still get ahead and achieve something,” she says. “I encourage everyone to be open about anxiety and mental illness. It needs to be normalised, so that people can be honest about the way they are feeling and admit to waking up with depression or anxiety in the same way you’d admit to a headache.”

These are skills that can then applied to the home, a classroom or a boardroom.

REMARKABLE IS A STATE OF MIND AND A WAY OF BEING. IT’S THE REAL YOU.

DO YOU NEED TO AVOID CARBS? THE TEST A form of genetic profiling, the Fitgenes Carb Choice test uses a swab of your cheek cells to assess your levels of the AMY1 gene (a gene that produces the carbprocessing enzyme, amylase), to determine how well your bod metabolises carbs. HOW DOES IT WORK? By analysing the amount of amylase in your saliva, the Carb Choice test can determine if your body's able to break down starch effectively (as in, you don't get digestive troubles every time you nosh on sweet potato chips), or if your tum's crying out for low-carb, fibrerich foods. The lower your AMY1 score, the harder your bod has to work to digest starch (which can signal gut issues), while a higher score indicates you're able to deal with carbs (but may encounter dental woes thanks to high levels of amylase in your saliva).

The Remarkable Group is a boutique personal leadership agency. We know that our self worth influences our net worth. GLOBAL GREETINGS: IF IN DOUBT, SHAKE “It may only be the clinging touch of a child’s hand; but there is as much potential sunshine in it for me as there is in a loving glance for others. A hearty handshake or a friendly letter gives me genuine pleasure.” – Helen Keller, The Story of My Life It’s one of the most awkward social interactions between two people introduced for the first time—or who have met, briefly, when one offers a handshake while the other goes in for a hug and/or a cheek kiss. “I try to read the person’s energy—in a split second—before making that decision,” publicist Lorenzo Martone tells the Daily Beast, adding that his Brazilian upbringing means he has an excuse for heading straight for the cheek: “And always twice— the chic and sexy people I know always kiss twice.” Neither does he care what country he’s in, adding that he carries his puckering protocol wherever he goes, and unless meeting the queen “won’t change my kissing” for anybody. Other nations that generally offer a couple of cheek kisses are Italy, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Germany, France (though in some provinces may rise to four!) and a handful of Middle Eastern states—but the latter is strictly reserved to between the same sexes. To add to the confusion, there are countries like Belgium, Serbia, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Russia where it’s traditional to offer a trio of cheek pecks, while Colombia, Argentina, Chile and the Philippines generally just go for the one. (And wherever, or whenever, you’re about to head in for a friendly kiss, always head right to avoid that most mortifying of greetings—the accidental lip-meet.)

The Philippines is somewhat of outlier on this list also, as many Asian nations are far more formal in their introductions. In China, it’s proper to shake hands— and unlike in the West, limply, and without eye contact—or even clasp your own fingers together and bow, similar to the stance adopted in Japan where the deeper the bow, the greater the sign of respect (a simple nod is the equivalent of “Hi!” and should only be used in informal settings). The quite lovely greeting in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh comprises placing your palms in the prayer position in front of your chest and saying, “Namaste”. Throughout Africa, a handshake is generally the most accepted way to introduce oneself. “Handshaking is already known to convey a range of information depending on the duration of gesture, its strength and the posture used,” says neurobiologist Noam Sobel, co-author of a 2015 study into the evolution of the handshake, published in eLife. “We argue that it may have evolved to serve as one of a number of ways to sample social chemicals from each other, and it still serves this purpose in a meaningful albeit subliminal way.” One of the most intriguing findings of the study was that people would often subconsciously sniff their hands following a shake— and were even more likely to touch their own face following a greeting with the same gender, perhaps as a way of gauging dominance. Humans have been offering their hands as a way of greeting for millennia, and some say the gesture originated almost as a peace offering to prove that you possessed no weapon. A ninth-century BC sculpture shows King Shalmaneser III of Assyria shaking hands with a Babylonian leader as a seal of an alliance, while Homer talked of handshakes in the Iliad. Ancient Greeks would often adorn their gravestones with pictures of the deceased shaking hands with a family member, while clasped hands were inscribed on some Roman coins.

Kissing is similarly ancient—and not just limited to humans. Other mammals that practise it in some form—whether using the lips or tongue—include other primates, dogs and cats. Even some insects have been known to engage in antennal locking, possibly as a form of bonding. Many of the earliest writings concerning kissing date from Ancient India— most famously in the Kama Sutra. Written in 440 BC, Herodotus’s Histories—one of the earliest works of literature—discusses how Persian men would greet other men of equal rank with a kiss on the lips, while those lower down the pecking order would receive their peck on the cheek. “Under the Romans, kissing became more widespread,” writes Dr Neel Burton for Psychology Today. “The Romans kissed their partners or lovers, family and friends, and rulers.” He goes on that they distinguished “a kiss on the hand or cheek (osculum)” from “a kiss on the lips (basium)” and “a deep or passionate kiss (savolium)”. “In his Epistle to the Romans, St. Paul instructed followers to ‘salute one another with a holy kiss’,” reveals Andy Scott, in his book One Kiss or Two: In Search of the Perfect Greeting. “And so the ‘holy kiss’ became a common greeting among early Christians and a central part of Catholic ceremony.” Andy Scott has worked as British diplomat and a United Nations consultant so knows a thing or two about global greetings. His advice? Go with the flow. “One approach is to take the other person’s lead, like dancing,” he tells Conde Nast Traveler. “Going through the ritual and getting it wrong is, to some extent, more important than avoiding it all together.” Embarrassment or awkwardness, he adds, serves as an “important social signal showing you’re aware of that country’s customs”. — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

SCRIBBLES 'N' GIGGLES WORDS: JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES IMAGE: KATE LITTLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Publisher Lynette Evans says working with Rhys was “a rollercoaster ride of ridiculousness”.

So, you never had to shoot anyone? “No, never shot a man!” Not even by accident? “No!” Could you recall all the Morse code, or did you have to brush up for the book? “Yeah, that was one of the most fun parts, reinvestigating and remembering the Morse code. I was very fluent in it—I was a signaller, so it was one of my jobs. I really wanted to include it in the book because it’s a classic thing and I think kids don’t really know about it anymore. So, it’s good to bring that back.” Do you worry that kids are no longer invested enough in reading in general? “I think kids in general have a short attention span. I’ve seen it through my children [Rhys has two boys, Theo aged eight, and 12-year-old Finn]. It all depends on how their brains are wired. My younger one is a good reader, the other not so much—but he is very physical and goes outside lots. It’s also hard to get them off the video games.”

Did being a comedian help with the writing, enabling you to better channel some silliness? “Yeah, absolutely. Having two boys also keeps me young at heart. I’ve always been child-like, so having a nice avenue for my silly sense of humour is useful. I get to throw it onto the pages.” Is it a different writing approach to stand-up? “This book is not too dissimilar because it’s in journal form, which is how I write my comedy notebooks, thinking on the fly. But this time there is a big picture as opposed to shorter stories or jokes. I did also handwrite this, which is more the muscle that I’m used to using as a comedian. The layout is deliberately as if it was this kid’s notebook that he had put his scribbles and ideas in. It made sense to do it that way.” Is it your handwriting? “That’s actually a font. I wanted them to print it out as it was, but I think they thought my handwriting was a bit too messy for kids!” Buttons McGinty is also adorned with Rhys’s illustrations. He reveals that sketching and doodling are part of his creative process. “My comedy notebooks are full of drawings,” continues Rhys. “Even on my honeymoon, I remember sitting on the beach and drawing pictures, and my wife was like, ‘Come on, let’s go get a drink, eh?’, and I was like, ‘Yeah, just let me finish this pyramid!’” Were you in Egypt? “Ha, no, I wish! We were in Thailand. Maybe I was drawing where I wished I was! But, Thailand was extremely nice.” Released last month, Rhys’s book has already received rave reviews from those that matter most: the kiddie customers. “I’ve had lots of feedback, and even had kids sending me videos of themselves writing their own journals so it’s exciting to know it’s working,” he says. “It’s great because you might go off exploring somewhere and take some photos on your phone or iPad and never look at them again. But if you take some notes in a journal then that’s something you’ll have forever. You’ll likely go back and check it out one day and say, ‘Remember when we went on that adventure?’”

Rhys says that he wrote the book with Theo in mind, to inspire his “adventurous spirit”. And it worked. “Theo was the first person to read it and he loved it,” says the comic-cum-author. “He took it to school and read it at restaurants. When we were at home he’d make me read to him and do funny voices.” Rhys lets out a big chuckle when asked about feedback from Finn. “He’s very supportive but is nearly 13 and would much rather be hanging out at the shopping mall with his girlfriends! But he’s very proud and talks about it on Instagram.” Were you a keen reader as a kid? “I was a reluctant reader, more into running about with a ball. The trick to getting me into reading was graphic novels. I

THE TOP SECRET UNDERCOVER NOTES OF BUTTONS MCGINTY, BOOK 1, BY RHYS DARBY, PUBLISHED BY SCHOLASTIC, IS OUT NOW.

“You’re right, I’m not! But I was at the start. I was 17, in the cadets, and the natural progression was to join the regular army. There was that sense of adventure, along with all the gadgets and weaponry that interested me growing up. But after about three years I realised that I’d had enough—and I didn’t want to be sent off to war.”

There’s an element of Tintin with the adventures of Buttons McGinty. “Definitely. I actually wanted to become a journalist because of Tintin and lead a life of adventure. But by the time I got to university, comedy took over.”

Rhys describes this second literary offering, The Top Secret Undercover Notes of Buttons McGinty (his first was This Way To Spaceship, “more for adults, if you can call it that because it’s not too adult-y”) as a “clue-laden, Indiana Jones-style notebook”. The first of a series, it sees its 12-year-old protagonist embark upon a collection of adventures to track down his missing parents on a remote Pacific island. Readers must figure out clues and even crack Morse code—a skill that Rhys learnt during his stint in the armed forces. I suggest, “with the greatest of love”, that the comic doesn’t exactly come across as the military type.

also enjoyed Tintin and the funny side of things like Roald Dahl. They tapped into me, and this book was trying to capture what made me interested in turning a page. I hoped to do that for other young kids as well.”

ART & ABOUT

There’s probably no Kiwi comic more qualified to write a kids’ book than the ever-effervescent Rhys Darby, so little surprise when Scholastic approached him for a gig. “They saw the success of David Walliams’s children’s books and thought, ‘Let’s get our comedian to write something’,” says Rhys. “I don’t think they expected what I did give them, which is sort of in the realm, but has another genre again, a kind of journal and sketchbook tangled within a mystery. So, I think I gave them more than what they expected in the end.”

8 Nov VERMILION

Recognition from Paris’s Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture is considered the apex of the fashion industry, and Chinese designer Guo Pei is determined to reach it. With a remarkable eye for detail and exquisite blending of visual artforms, veteran documentarian Pietra Brettkelly captures Guo’s drive, artistry, meticulousness, and acumen, from the designer’s emergence on the international scene.

Vermilion tells the story of a group of women who are close to each other—mothers, daughters, friends and neighbours. Some of their relationships are good and some are broken. When the central character, Darcy, is confronted by a challenging truth, she finds herself driven to organise the wedding of her only daughter, Zoe. Her best friend Sarah falls in love and 12-year-old Issy just wants to be a bride, too. Starring New Zealand actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand (Desperate Remedies, Full Frontal).

15 Nov THE OLD MAN & THE GUN

29 Nov BEAUTIFUL BOY

The Old Man & the Gun is an upcoming 2018 American crime comedy film written and directed by David Lowery. The film is based on the true-life story of Forrest Tucker, a career criminal and prison escape artist. The script is based on David Grann's 2003 article in The New Yorker titled 'The Old Man and the Gun', which was later collected in Grann's book The Devil and Sherlock Holmes. It stars Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, Tika Sumpter, Tom Waits and Sissy Spacek.

Beautiful Boy is a deeply moving portrait of a family’s unwavering love and commitment to each other in the face of their son’s addiction and his attempts at recovery. Based on two memoirs, one from acclaimed journalist David Sheff and one from his son, Nic Sheff. As Nic repeatedly relapses, the Sheffs are faced with the harsh reality that addiction is a disease that does not discriminate and can hit any family at any time. Harrowing, heartbreaking and yet full of joy, hope and love, Beautiful Boy recounts the rehabs, disappearances, broken promises and rage as Nic sinks deeper into the drug world, as well as David’s efforts to save his “beautiful boy” from the ravages of addiction. Directed by Felix van Groeningen (The Broken Circle Breakdown), the film stars Academy Award nominees Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name).

CANCER

23 OCTOBER–21 NOVEMBER

19 FEBRUARY-20 MARCH

21 JUNE-22 JULY

You’re driven to pursue your dreams. You want to get closer to attaining them and can accomplish one of them during this period. You’re more open to things that are unusual, unconventional, innovative, inventive, and futuristic, and want to push the envelope. You have more mental energy than physical energy and can do a lot of investigating into subjects before pursuing any of them.

You’re interested in many things presently, more curious than usual, and want to learn more about them. You may not stick with anything for very long though, so you will pick up lots of new, random bits of information, but won't become a master at anything. You can be more outgoing, wanting to be more socially engaged and need a busier schedule.

You will come up with big ideas of what you want to do with your life. You can see the big picture more clearly, but the details are a little fuzzy. You can take an interest in something and want to study it further. You can become more interested in other cultures, and try to learn about other ways of living.

SAGITTARIUS

ARIES

LEO

22 NOVEMBER-21 DECEMBER

21 MARCH–19 APRIL

23 JULY-22 AUGUST

This isn’t a period to focus on the seriousness of life; it’s a time to joke about its kookiness and relish in its joy. You’re extremely optimistic and positive about life, feeling everything is going great. You want to expand your consciousness, and spending time learning something new, studying a philosophy or culture, or jetsetting to some foreign land.

You may come across as more proud, warm, and friendly. Your creative self can come out, and you let your artistic side shine. There are no fences that can hold you in and no limit to how high you can fly. If you’re single, you can meet more people who pique your interest. If in a relationship, you can try to bring romance back into it.

This is a good time for going back to a career you used to work in. You can feel like your life isn’t expanding the way that you want it to and this frustrates you. You’re stuck in the dark, dwelling on the issues that hold you back. You can experience power struggles with someone, especially over money, and have issues with other people’s money.

22 DECEMBER–19 JANUARY

20 APRIL–20 MAY

23 AUGUST–22 SEPTEMBER

You’ll feel more ambitious, hard-working, and focused on success. You may seem more distant emotionally, too concerned with your goals and with where you want to be in your life. You have an easier time with travel, legal dealings, writing, and learning. You’ll have more passion for your dreams, and more focused on the future and may have a harder time living in the present.

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY–18 FEBRUARY

You have a harder time until 17 Novermber dealing with mental tasks with a group of people or by yourself, and work better when you have one partner. From the seventeenth it is a good time to talk about your relationship with someone, or to form a new business partnership. You will have an easier time dealing with your loved ones than usual.

You’re more defensive of your beliefs, and if you feel threatened, you’ll defend them strongly. You can question your dreams for your future, and feel that they’re too unrealistic and out of reach, but this may not be a good time to make any final decisions about what you should do. You can let your emotions run more freely and give your head a break.

Your mind would be active and sharp and you come up with lots of new ideas. This is a good time for any mental work that needs to be done, though you’re not good at sticking with any project for very long right now. Smaller projects will get done quickly. You would be more loud and boisterous and more social and engaging with others.

GEMINI

LIBRA

21 MAY–20 JUNE

23 SEPTEMBER–22 OCTOBER

You embrace what it is that makes you who you are, and want to be a unique, independent person. You can be more dramatic with your emotional displays, requiring more attention when you’re feeling insecure. You can finish a creative project, take a love relationship to the next level, or stop seeing someone entirely if you don’t feel it’s working out.

You may come across as more of a perfectionist, organised and anxious. You would work quickly, efficiently, and you won’t stop until you get everything done. You would be good with the details, and can gather the facts you need. You can also feel stronger and more vital, and decide to try to improve your health through diet, exercise, or some other lifestyle changes.

BARBEQUE EYE FILLET

// NOV 2018

STUFFED WITH OLIVE TAPENADE + PANCETTA

This is an absolutely divine tasting eye fillet. Cook it on a wood-fired barbeque if you can for that extra special wood smoked flavour.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1x whole beef eye fillet 250g pancetta a roll of natural fibre string for trussing the beef salt and freshly ground black pepper olive tapenade 1 cup kalamata olives, pips removed 2 tbsp capers 3 cloves garlic, peeled, finely chopped 3 anchovy fillets ½ cup fresh basil, roughly chopped 2 tbsp fresh oregano, roughly chopped 1 tbsp fresh rosemary, roughly chopped + a few sprigs for the stuffing 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice ¼ cup olive oil a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper Serves 10-12 DF, GF — Recipe: A Third Helping by Angela Redfern and the Ripe Deli team Photography: Sally Greer

RIPE RECIPES: A THIRD HELPING BY ANGELA REDFERN AND THE RIPE DELI TEAM, BEATNIK PUBLISHING, RRP $60, BEATNIKSHOP.COM, PHOTOGRAPHS BY SALLY GREER.

1. To prepare the eye fillet: place the eye fillet on a large wooden chopping board and trim off any sinew and fat. Cut a deep slit along the length of the fillet, but leave the ends uncut, to create a pocket-like opening in the beef. 2. To prepare the tapenade: place a frying pan over a high heat with a splash of olive oil. When hot, add the olives and fry for 3–4 minutes. 3. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Using a food processor, blend all the ingredients together until lightly combined. Transfer into a small bowl. 4. To stuff and truss the beef: open the pocket in the beef and evenly spread half the tapenade inside the beef. 5. Lay six pieces of the pancetta inside the pocket so they are covering the length of the inside of the beef fillet. Close the pocket and wrap the remaining pancetta around the outside of the beef. 6. Cut six pieces of string approximately 15cm long. Wrap the string around the beef to secure the pancetta in place. Liberally drizzle olive oil all over the fillet and season really well with salt and freshly ground pepper. Wedge the sprigs of rosemary under the string. 7. To cook the beef: heat your barbeque to a high heat and sear the fillet for a few minutes on all sides. Now reduce the heat or move it to the coolest section of the grill. 8. Slow roast the fillet on the barbeque for approximately 25–35 minutes (depending on how rare you like your beef), turning it once during the cooking time to ensure the meat cooks evenly. 9. Remove from the heat and allow the beef to rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with the remaining tapenade on the side.

BERRY BERRY GOOD CHOCOLATE CAKE

//

INGREDIENTS CHOCOLATE CAKE

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 170°C.

1¼ cup ground almonds 2 cups plain gluten-free flour ¾ cup cocoa powder ½ cup caster sugar 1 cup soft brown sugar 1 tsp baking powder 2 tsp baking soda a pinch of salt 3 tbsp chia seeds 150g dark vegan chocolate, roughly chopped 3 tsp instant coffee 1½ cups boiling water 1 cup vegetable oil 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 small banana, well mashed

POACHED BERRIES & BERRY GANACHE 3 cups frozen mixed berries 3 tbsp water 3 tbsp soft brown sugar 200g dark vegan chocolate

DECORATIONS a mixture of fresh berries, for garnish 3 tbsp freeze-dried blueberries, for garnish (optional) a handful of edible flowers (optional) Serves 16 DF, GF, VEGAN — Recipe: A Third Helping by Angela Redfern and the Ripe Deli team Photography: Sally Greer RIPE RECIPES: A THIRD HELPING BY ANGELA REDFERN AND THE RIPE DELI TEAM, BEATNIK PUBLISHING, RRP $60, BEATNIKSHOP.COM, PHOTOGRAPHS BY SALLY GREER.

2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 23cm or 26cm spring-form cake tin with baking paper. 3. In a large bowl, sift together the ground almonds, glutenfree flour, cocoa powder, caster sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Mix until very well combined. 4. In small metal bowl place the chia seeds, chocolate and coffee. Pour over the freshly boiled water stirring until the chocolate is melted, then stir through the oil, vanilla and mashed banana. 5. Make a well in the middle of the dry mixture. Pour the warm wet mixture into the dry mixture and mix well until there are no lumps. 6. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake for approximately one hour or until the cake is springy to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the tin for 20 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack. Cool the cake completely before icing it. 7. To prepare the poached berries and ganache: place the berries, water and sugar into a small saucepan, place over a low heat and cook for 10 minutes. Don’t stir the berries too much or they will break apart. While the berries are cooking, finely grate (using a grater) the chocolate for the ganache into a small bowl. 8. Remove the poached berries from the heat and strain halfa-cup of the hot berry juice into to the bowl with the grated chocolate. Set the rest of the berry compote aside to cool. 9. Using a fork or small whisk, stir the chocolate and berry juice together until smooth (if it doesn’t melt completely you can pop it into the microwave for 10-second bursts on high until melted). Leave the ganache to cool and thicken for 5–10 minutes. 10. To assemble the cake: place the cake onto a serving platter. Spread the ganache over the top and around the sides of the cake. Decorate the top with the fresh berries and freeze-dried blueberries or some edible flowers. Place the cake in the refrigerator to firm up for at least an hour before cutting and serving. Tip: Use a hot dry knife to cut the cake. Serve with the poached berries and your favourite coconut yoghurt on the side. This cake keeps well in the refrigerator for up to a week.

EDIBLE FLOWERS Add a touch of elegance by brightening up your salads or garnishing your meals with some edible flowers. And it’s not all about their appearance, some of them also taste blooming delicious. But before you get stuck in, it’s worth noting that not all flowers are edible. Care should be taken, and just because you’ve seen glorious, glossy pictures of delightful looking meals on Instagram, bestrewn with arrays of blossoms, it doesn’t mean that the flowers shown should be eaten.

GETTING STARTED

Most flowering plants have been grown to look nice, not for human consumption. By choosing plants grown for their edible flowers, or by growing suitable plants from seed, you can be sure that they are fine to eat.

TOP EDIBLE FLOWERS

Borage: Delicate, small, star-shaped blue flowers that melt in your mouth. Can be candied and used as decoration on cakes, or used as a garnish. The leaves are great when crushed and used in a gin and tonic.

AT ORAKEI BAY Get in the garden with Kings, and grow with confidence! Shop a huge range of top quality plants and all the gardening essentials, all with expert advice from our team of garden specialists and instore Plant Doctor.

Calendula: Despite being known as poor man's saffron, they are well worth a try. They're easy to grow and use. Only use the petals, which have a tangy, mildly bitter taste. Great addition to salads and as a garnish. Nasturtium: Easy to grow and comes in an array of gorgeous colours. Both the leaves and the flowers have a slightly hot, peppery taste, great for adding a slight kick to your salads. Pansy, Viola & Heartsease: Available in heaps of colours, and while the taste is subtle they provide a slightly aromatic and attractive addition to any salad. Pineapple Sage: The leaves smell like pineapple lumps and the flowers are sweet and great in fruit salads. Other edible flowers worth trying include: chives, dianthus, anise hyssop, lavender, roses, sage and zucchini flowers. KINGS PLANT BARN – 0800 PLANTS – KINGS.CO.NZ

VOLKSWAGEN CAlIFORNIA OCEAN REVIEW

would be so popular and quite noisy into the early hours, Note to self, choose a more secluded area next time.

Having its roots heavily set in the incredibly iconic VW Type 2 Kombi, a Camper that was unveiled back in the '50s and was the poster child for Californian hippy throughout the '60s, the sixth generation T6, retains much of the style, feel and freedom of yesteryear but offers the ultra-modern creature comforts and driveability that, let’s be honest, you’d really hope for.

For our Saturday night’s accommodation, we checked in to the Top 10 Holiday Park, a far more civilised location that offered mains power, a hot pool, an expansive kitchen (not that we needed it) and showers, something that apparently we did.

With exterior dimensions that hover around 5m long, 2m wide and 2m tall, the California is certainly not as svelte as the original but with parking sensors, reversing cameras, 4Motion all-wheel drive and responsive power steering, this increased size is by no means daunting. There’s more room inside too and the VW have used it wisely. Despite packing for what seemed like every eventuality, we barely made a dent in the California’s vast array of stowage and storage areas—they are quite literally everywhere. We had been given the California Ocean model in white and blue two-tone paint and complete with white and chrome wheels, it’s splendid looking, especially in the sun and beside water, I’ll get to that soon. We set off southwards from Auckland mid-afternoon on the Friday and it wasn’t long before we hit heavy traffic, a delay that cost us around an hour, but time we used wisely, with I spy and turning up the tunes on the infotainment system. Once free and clear of the snarl-ups, I engaged the California’s Adaptive Cruise Control and simply relaxed, letting the electronics work their distance maintaining magic and keeping the 2L/7-speed DSG gearbox powertrain combination in check. Upon arrival in Rotorua, we headed straight to the pizza joint for takeaways and set up camp beside the big lake, Freedom camping was on the agenda for our first night of adventure. Within the space of a few minutes, the electric pop-top roof went up and the cabin seats were laid down, exposing two double bed sleeping areas and once the window shutters were drawn, we settled in for the night. Despite being comfortable, I have to admit to having a restless night. Who knew that the Rotorua lakefront area

Next morning we were up early to watch the sunrise over the lake before setting off to play. Zorbing, luging, local markets, steam pits, luncheon, coffee and a bit of shopping—phew. Unlike myself, the California moved from event to event, location to location without a care or a worry, manoeuvring around the city with a fair share of admiring glances and even slotting neatly into parking lot spaces.

Again, within a matter of minutes, our campsite territory was erected but this time we unfolded the awning, took out the outdoor table and chairs, cooked up some delicious spag bol on the California’s gas cooker and opened up an ice cold beer (or two) from the Kombi’s fridge. As the night fell (along with the temperature) we headed inside the camper and sparked up the auxiliary heater, becoming seriously warm and toasty in no time at all. Following a well deserved night’s rest, and ‘cheatingly’ making a coffee from the holiday park’s kettle, I quietly consumed the life-giving elixir beside our mobile motel and ruminated. We really do live in a glorious part of the world and there are plenty of destinations in New Zealand that my family and I have yet to discover. But, probably like many Kiwi families, we tend to race from our home to (often) a non-discript hotel or motel, drop our bags and then enjoy the chosen destination. The Volkswagen California allowed us to begin the break the moment we left the house. Regardless of our actual destination, the journey became part of the holiday, the sense of vacation freedom at the turn of Kombi’s key and (providing you are respectful to the countryside), the California opens up some of the most epic vista’s you could ever wish to wake up beside. The VW California is big enough to accommodate a raft of homely essentials (and non-essentials too), comfortable enough to sleep a small family without any annoyance, versatile enough to live off the grid and away from civilisation in, (for a certain period at least) and yet small enough to merge in and conform when required. So now you know ‘what goes on in Rotovegas’, wonder if we should head to Nevada next? — Words: Dave McLeod / VOLKSWAGEN.CO.NZ

// NOV 2018

Las Vegas is the bright lights, big Sin City, in Nevada in the good ‘ol US of A. It’s a place of adventure (of sorts), gaming, shows and comes packed full of stories that you cannot talk about, "What goes on in Vegas..." well, you know the rest. A little further south, and a lot closer to home, lies Rotovegas, a local moniker for one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist traps, Rotorua. It too has shows and gaming, it too offers a raft of adventures and it too has a wide range of stories that are often best left there. However, since I have just returned from an excellent family trip to Rotovegas in the Volkswagen California Ocean Kombi, here’s the tale of our experience that I’m more than happy to regale.

SOUL-FUL MAZDA CX-3 REVIEW

When launched onto the market in 2015, Mazda’s sub-compact SUV the CX-3, came loaded with flair, athleticism and electronic wizardry. But it would appear that with its latest refresh, they have further upped the ante with smoother styling, increased performance and a whole host of cutting-edge technology. So, the big question I have to ask about the 2019 Mazda CX-3 is, where do they find the space? To help me solve this conundrum, Mazda NZ handed me the keys to their GSX model in their deeply enriching Soul Red Crystal paintwork. At a little over 4.2m in length and 1.5m in height, the CX-3 really is a pocket-sized SUV, but with (in my case) a SKYACTIV-G 2.0L petrol engine married to a SKYACTIVDrive 6-speed automatic transmission it sure does pack a punch. For this ‘refreshed’ model, Mazda has improved on their already top-notch chassis and enhanced the SUV’s NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) essentially improving on an already sound driving experience. Subtle-ish changes have been made to the vehicle’s exterior, with the grille, bumper, taillights and foglights receiving attention plus a variety of garnish tweaks there to impress the keen of eye (a side-by-side comparison would be advantageous). LEDs now feature on all four corners of this model and the CX-3 sits proudly upon sharp-looking 18-inch machined alloy wheels. Step inside the CX-3 and you’re greeted with (as if it needed it) improved luxury and a few owner ‘wishlist’ enhancements. Despite its compact exterior frame, the Mazda has a spacious cabin that offers plenty of head and legroom for up to five people (although my preference would be four) and a two-level trunk that holds ‘all seats up’ cargo of over 351L. My model came with leather seat trim, a soft ‘poke-inviting’ dashboard, a comfortable front

console (now with usable storage areas) and a rear armrest with storage bin and cupholders—it’s these small things that make for a better ‘all round’ experience I’m told, but my obvious focus is still on the driver’s seat. With its size and poise, the CX-3 fully embraces the Mazda Jinba Ittai philosophy (horse and driver as one). It’s nimble and agile both in urban and country environments and feels light underfoot, the small SUV offers you neatly weighted steering and there’s plenty of depth to each gear allowing confident open-road driving. This whole feeling of confidence is not without substance either, it’s effectively underlined by the sheer mammoth amount of driver aid electronics and SKYACTIV technology that the CX-3 has squirrelled away. For all you acronym lovers out there, here is a taste of what lies beneath that glorious Soul Red crystal skin—GVC, ASCBS-F, ABS, DSC, TCS, EBD, EBA, ESS, HLA, MRCC, SBS with FOW, SCBS-R, BSM, RCTA, TSR, SCR—I’ll leave you to look up their meanings, but suffice to say, the CX-3 has all manner of ways to keep you safe and pointed in the direction you choose to go! With this latest model release of the CX-3, Mazda has managed to further modernise an already contemporary member of their SUV fleet. They’ve made changes where possible but not ‘just for the sake of it’ and although the CX-3’s footprint barely takes up half the size of an American parking space, Mazda has added a host of driver and safety assists while keeping an impressive amount of room inside for passengers to enjoy the ride—how did they manage to do all this? I guess I’ll leave that up to your imagination. — Words: Dave McLeod

HONDA HR-V RS REVIEW Words: Dave McLeod

Badge of honour, badge of office, badge of pride, badge of distinction... it seems that when it comes to badges, their list of uses and associations go on ad infinitum. From being a simple emblem or signification of merit, to portraying a sign of allegiance or even a statement of authority, there is a lot to be gained when someone or indeed something, carries a badge. With the release of the 2018 HR-V models, for the first time, Honda has added a new ‘RS’ badge to the range and they were kind enough to throw us the keys. Even without brandishing around such phrases as "the world's top-selling small, crossover SUV", with the number of these vehicles spotted on our roads, it’s clear to see that the HR-V has obviously struck a popular chord with Kiwis. Originally launched near the turn of the century, this Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle brought together increased space and high visibility with small car manoeuvrability and economy. In 2016, among other things, the second generation boasted more usable room, four doors and in my opinion, a vastly improved kerb appeal. For 2018, Honda have managed to improve on this generation even further. Offering a more responsive drive and adding extra modern driving comforts such as LED lights, touchscreen audio (with in-built navigation), improved active safety technology (Honda’s City-Brake Active technology—low speed, autonomous emergency braking is standard), and a multi-angle reversing camera, all while still maintaining its class-leading space. However, the RS model is something more again. First of all, there is the exclusive RS Phoenix Orange Pearl colour option, it is an absolute standout in the Kiwi sun. The RS has a sportier stance, 18-inch alloys, greater focus has been given to the vehicle’s design detail with an RS bodykit that features a black gloss upper grille and honeycomb lower and dark chrome door handles. Honda has also thrown LEDs at it from front to back—DRLs, fog, tail and headlights. But it’s not just cosmetics and badges, the HR-V RS has a more responsive, direct drive feel, thanks to its specially tuned steering and suspension.

The HR-V slipped seamlessly into our small family lifestyle and I spent the first day or so in normal drive mode mooching around the neighbourhood, essentially going about my regular day-to-day existence. The HR-V simply ate this sort of ‘challenge’ for breakfast. Visibility is fine and dandy, combined fuel economy is reported to be around 6.7L/100km and CO2 emissions are a shade over 150g/km. The 1.8L 16v i-VTEC has a nippy feel to it (once off the mark) and although 105kW/172Nm may not be earth-moving numbers, it doesn’t seem to struggle to get the speedo needle to head north. But I have to admit that driving in ‘Sport’ changes the dynamics for the better. In Sport, the HR-V RS appears more playful and reactive. Less input is required to gain acceleration or turn corners (thanks to the RS variable gear ratio steering). You feel more in charge, more in control of your own destiny (especially if the wife isn’t in the car). Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a massive change, but it certainly is noticeable and anything not tied down in the boot definitely bore the brunt of my increased enthusiasm. The HR-V’s interior comes complete with gloss and matte black finishes and a sprinkling of exposed stitching, upmarket but not overdone, plus the dark leather sports seats walk that fine line between being supportive enough for those times when corners need to be attacked yet comfortable for those seemingly endless waits in thick traffic. The HR-V’s warm sounding stereo and privacy glass comes in handy for those special times, too. Obviously, my preference was Sport and that’s where I spent the majority of my time with this crossover. Yes it was a little more ‘jerky’ and I’m sure the fuel gauge needle probably dropped a little faster but to me, it just felt more alive, more involved, more fun. The 2018 Honda HR-V may not be taking part in a rally stage near me anytime soon, but the family and I enjoyed its versatility, nippiness and of course, were very pleased to have an RS club badge on the driveway. The new 2018 HR-V is now available in the RS model for the first time. Adding attitude with an exclusive, sportier design and more responsive drive thanks to the RS tuned steering and suspension. Packed with new features like 18 alloys, LED DRLs, LED fog, tail and headlights, active safety tech and class-leading space, the RS will ensure the HR-V remains the world’s top selling crossover SUV.

RAISING THE GAME MASERATI LEVANTE S GRANSPORT

As many of you are probably aware (after all you’re a bright bunch), the translation of the Italian word Levante means ‘to rise’ as in ‘the sun rising in the east’, thus making it the ideal moniker for Maserati’s SUV. Call it fate or sublime forethought, but the Levante has risen to the top of their model range and has provided a new touch of Italian style to the SUV segment. Maserati launched with a diesel powertrain and followed this up with a V6 petrol engine built in Maranello, both of which I travelled to Australia to drive, however, there’s a lot to be said about experiencing vehicles on your home turf. With that in mind, Maserati kindly handed me the keys to their Levante S—time to hit terra firma Aotearoa, Italiana style. At a shade over 5m in length (arguably the longest in the segment), 2m wide and 1.7m tall, this is not a compact SUV, but even dressed in Pearlescent Biance Alpi (which I believe is Alpine White), the Levante carries its size well. Born in Turin, it has charismatic Italian style, sweet lines and broad rear shoulders that cut through the wind tunnel with an aerodynamic drag co-efficiency figure of 0.31—that’s remarkably slick. I had been given the GranSport model which offered more gloss black accents to the exterior (and in particular the polarising, Tipo 60 birdcage inspired grille), front and rear skid plates, 21-inch alloy wheels and bright red brake callipers. It’s unmistakably a Maserati and wears the Trident logo and Saetta badging (on the rear quarter panel) with pride. Open the frameless doors (complete with acoustic glass) and the Italian refinement continues. The furniture and majority of the dashboard are lavished with fine leather, which in my case was Rosso red, the headlining is Alcantara and stunning carbon fibre highlights throughout. My Levante S came with carbon fibre steering wheel inserts, paddles and a full-length panoramic sunroof that let the spacious cabin simply bathe in light. The SUV’s coupe styling still allows for plenty of leg and headroom for five people and offers 580 litres of rear luggage space. The seats are comfortable and cradling but one small thing, I’m reliably informed that the seatbelts are a little tricky to engage at the rear.

When it comes to infotainment and driver’s aids, the Levante S is fully loaded. With an analogue and digital instrument cluster and an 8.4-inch touchscreen, it offers up sounds by Harman Kardon and access to electronic wizardry such as 360-degree cameras (with multi-views), apps, Bluetooth connectivity, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition. Then there’s the engine. A Maranello-built twin-turbo V6, with 321kW and 580Nm it will take the Levante S from 0-100km/h in 5.2seconds and up to a top speed of 264km/h. The combined fuel-efficiency is 10.9l/100km and CO2 emissions sit at 253g/km—but it’s that sound under revs that’s truly captivating. There are a variety of driving mode options on the centre console. The Levante is a highly capable off-tarmac vehicle with an adaptive suspension that can be raised and lowered. It has an ICE mode (increased control and efficiency) and a Manual mode (for using those large aluminium paddles), but it also has Sport and Sport II. Among other (possibly more important things), engaging Sport opens the exhaust baffles, letting the true Italian sportscar out and Sports II makes the Levante S hunker down ready for action—Of course Sports II was my prefered mode—bellissimo. With V6 guns ablazing and frequent use of paddles, the Levante S turns from mild to wild. It’s thrilling and fun, noisy and yet obedient, it’s easy to forget that it’s still a large SUV. Sounds on full, all windows and roof open, the Rodney district roads became the Italian Alps, at least for a little while. Revving up and down the eight-speed box and listening to that throaty V6 roar—ahhh. The Maserati Levante S GranSport hits that sweet spot of Italian style and sporting finesse. It’s head-turningly different, offering the deeply familiar scent of fine leather with the high revving sound of a race car (when pushed). By adding the V6 powertrain to the range, Maserati has raised the game, but I've also just heard that they’ve raised it again, so stay tuned for more. — Words: Dave McLeod

A CHANCE TO XPLORE HOLDEN'S Z71 XTREME COLORADO UTE

XTREMELY GREAT COLORADO EXPERIENCE Being squeezed tightly into a single-prop bean can to be flown to an island in the Hauraki Gulf by a, let’s say, "fresh-faced" pilot, in brisk and swirling winds is not the normal way to begin a road test, but Holden New Zealand is becoming synonymous with taking things to the Xtreme. Taking off from NZ’s widest airport in Auckland, to (fingers crossed) land on its narrowest got the adrenaline juices flowing as advertised and the horizontal windsock at Great Barrier Island’s runway certainly added to the fun. There was something mischievous in the smile across the face of Holden’s GM of corporate affairs, Ed Finn, as he greeted us at the terminal. Let the games begin. Aotea/Great Barrier Island is a mere 30-minute flight from Auckland but it really runs at its own pace. It’s 285 square kilometres in area and filled with an absolute raft of narrow meandering roads (some with asphalt and many without) and laden with ‘wave happy’ locals—we were to explore most of it in a bright orange crush and black decals, Holden Colorado Z71 Xtreme. Designed and developed by Holden in Australia and first introduced as a concept at the Bangkok Auto Show in 2016, the Z71 Xtreme takes the extensively tested Colorado ute to, well, the extreme (or make that the Xtreme). Equipped with a big 2.8-litre Duramax Turbo Diesel engine, 500Nm of torque and a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, it boasts the same impressive credentials of the Colorado Z71, but with a newlook tough exterior and upgraded off-road capability. This limited edition ute comes loaded with all genuine Holden accessories. It has upgraded front suspension, allterrain tyres and a vehicle recovery kit. It’s got a best-inclass winch system equipped with a heavy-duty bash plate as well as 10,000lb load capacity and a 30m synthetic line. Flared fenders, a black grille and bonnet bulge, a roof tray kit and (on our model) a snorkel—although I hoped we weren’t going diving in it.

After kissing the ground in Pope-like fashion and a spot of nerve-settling morning tea, we set out on a tour of the island. Although in all fairness it’s not a big island, Ed had planned out the day’s route well. We would be driving from ferry-to-ferry, port-to-port and ducking down a seemingly endless string of side roads, virtually no road would go unturned. The big thing he was quick to underline was the waving and I’m glad he did. Almost immediately upon hitting the streets came a wave from the local driver of an oncoming vehicle, a theme that continued throughout the day. From index finger lifting or royal wave to a palm raise or gentle nod, it’s relentless—I have to admit to changing my style with each and every one. We stopped for lunch on the beach and fed some rather aggressive eels along the way, we climbed hills and negotiated descents, exploring every nook and cranny of the fine and friendly island. As expected, the Z71 Xtreme took each road and road surface well in its stride, for quite a large truck it felt nimble and comfortable, it really looks good too. In all, we travelled a shade over 143km in the few hours we were there and regardless of the amount of corners we had turned I could have happily driven longer. The Z71 Xtreme is a great package, offering cosmetic and very real world mechanical upgrades to the firmly established Colorado frame and of course as it’s limited to 30, it’s even more desirable. With just the Xtreme flight back to Auckland to conquer, we headed back to the airport. In so many ways, it was a shame we couldn’t have driven back! — Words: Dave McLeod HOLDEN.CO.NZ

WE DON'T NEED MORE FUEL TAXES

JUST RENTALS

LETTING FEES

Recently I’ve picked up the Transport portfolio for the National party in opposition. I’m very pleased to have it, particularly as it fits so well with my other area of responsibility, Economic Development and Regional Economic Development. A good, functioning transport system is so important to our economy. Traffic congestion adds to the cost of everything that is transported—from building materials for our houses to our fish and chips on Friday night. But, of course, the impact of the transport system is much broader than business—our quality of life is hugely affected by our ability to get around freely, safely and affordably. Transport patterns have a huge impact on house prices, which is also central to our living standards. For many decades we under-invested in transport infrastructure in Auckland. The Southern Motorway was built with two lanes each way in the 1960s. Since then, the population has more than tripled and in some parts there’s still two lanes each way—should we be surprised there’s a problem? The previous National government got stuck in and made huge investments to get us moving again—the Waterview Tunnel, electrification of the rail system, the CBD rail loop and many improvements to the motorway system. I’m pleased to see the new government is continuing to invest, though I worry about the ideological nature of some of the decisionmaking, particularly around slow trams down Dominion Road. But we don’t need new taxes to pay for it. We’ve calculated that the average Auckland household is now paying $324 a year more in petrol taxes than this time last year. More than 20c a litre of petrol. This from a government that has inherited massive surpluses from the previous government’s careful fiscal management and is happy to waste billions on poor quality spending, such as Shane Jones’ slush fund or free tertiary fees. Already, every time a New Zealander puts $1 of fuel in their vehicle, 53 cents of that is going straight to the government.

The charging of letting fees to the tenant will be officially banned from the 12 December 2018. This is a decision I do agree with as the letting agent does the work for the landlord, like finding the tenant advertising, credit checks, writing up the agreement, obtaining references from previous landlords, and collecting and processing the bond, yet the landlord does not pay anything. The tenant has had to pay the letting fee of one week plus GST. Now we shall charge the landlord. Of course, this will affect our business. Private landlords will not use us to rent their property, they will do it themselves to save paying us the letting fee and this will continue until they find themselves in strife with a bad tenant. Then they come back to us, it happens quite frequently. Next year is going to be one of new legislation and changes to the Residential Tenancies Act. One that has been suggested is that landlords cannot refuse a tenant a tenancy on their property on the basis that the tenant has a pet! We have always endeavoured to allow pet on the tenancy as we believe them part of the family and so should be allowed.

We remain committed to investing in major transport projects up and down the country. They can be funded without extra taxation if we are disciplined in our normal spending.

Regulation for property managers is another legislation that I would agree with. Currently there are no rules governing the handling of rental payments and no professional standards that property managers must meet. Anybody can become a property manager, set up office, and take rent, but have no trust account—how ridiculous is that? There are many excellent property managers out there who adhere to the REINZ rules and have high standards, but there are others that do not.

Another area that I’ll be watching closely is what seems to be a determination by transport planners to slow us down unreasonably.

Just Rentals will be keeping up with the changes as they come through. Landlords you must be aware of these also.

The proposal to turn the entire Auckland CBD in to a 30 kmph zone makes no sense.

Good Renting

National has a better vision for New Zealand. The government needs to tackle the cost of living. We oppose these new fuel taxes being put in place and have pledged to abolish regional fuel taxes.

Transport policy should be focused on making life easier, not to drive us all mad.

Most people have heard about putting your wet phone in a bag with rice, but does it work? It does help to dry out the phone but it’s not the full story. Yes, your phone may recover and work, however what is likely to happen is that in the next few days and weeks it may start developing odd faults and then cease to work entirely. Drying out your device is only part of the solution. What happens is the wet but now dry components start to corrode and create tracks for electricity to flow between components where there should be no connection.
