Introducing‌ Cheryl Whi

Youth & exp the power o

Cheryl and Holly bring together their comple strengths, skills and experience to form a tru powerful team.

THE APPLE DOESN'T FALL FAR FROM THE TREE “I’m back” says Ray White realtor, Cheryl Whiting AREINZ sitting in her immaculately appointed Parnell home. The property expert nick-named the ‘Parnell Princess’ who has been selling, a Real Estate franchise owner and in senior managerial roles in real estate for nearly thirty years has teamed up with her granddaughter, Holly Cassidy. Holly, a nine year veteran of the industry herself is a former pageant princess after winning the title of Miss Universe New Zealand in 2013. “Together, we’ll be a force to be reckoned with – and I,” she says smiling. Speaking about Princesses, Cheryl's Grandmother said to her as small child, you are related to a Princess and her family still refer to her as such, as do some of her friends.

The well-connected duo who are concentrating on property around Parnell, Remuera and the Eastern suburbs have literally hit the ground running moving into their new office on the day of this interview. “Holly was laughing at me during the move” says Cheryl. Her granddaughter replies “here Nan is filling our office up with boxes and boxes full of awards and testimonials for me to sort then says “where’s my laptop charger?” Full of mutual praise for each other, it’s obvious that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree both in good looks and commercial acumen - the ‘real estate gene’ is buried deep within their DNA. “I guess it comes from my family. I was born a Manson” Cheryl says referring to her late Brother

Granddaughter Holly takes after her Nan, with 9 years Real Estate experience with a passion for delivering great results and a natural flair for sales and marketing.

Colin Manson. Colin said to me years ago “you should be in real estate” so I guess I grew up with property in my bones, learning to buy in great locations. Starting with our first home in Meadowbank, then on to Remuera, knowing all along we would love to live in Parnell, were we have lived for over 21 years. Similarly Holly had her heart set on a property degree, moving up specifically from Tauranga to pursue her career choice in the City of Sails. “My Dad Tony, Nan’s son dipped and dabbled in it as well” she says. “Nan helped me get an interview for my very first real estate job up here.” Since then Holly has held roles with three big real estate brands, a development company and became a licensed salesperson three years ago marketing property projects and running open homes. “It’s been a long time coming for me to work with Nan – it’s been nine years in the making.” Looking through several issues of NZ House & Garden including a cover story featuring Cheryl’s exquisite former homes in Parnell and current gem in Parnell, it’s evident she has the enviable knack of visualising untapped potential in a property. You would never know that her current sumptuous well-appointed home with a lush tropical garden once used to be an office space emblazoned with LED lighting. “I know my Nan is the best person to be working with professionally, you’ve got to do the hard yards and she has. We’re in it together with the support of our whole family. It’s in our blood, it’s what we do.”

EDITORS' NOTE

GETTING FIT & FEELING GOOD Fran & Jude

We do indeed feel so lucky to have the beautiful and successful Elle McPherson on our cover this month. She is a woman we have admired for many years here at Verve and to have her as our cover star is testament to both Elle’s and Verve’s immutable appeal. Her natural poise and radiant beauty are clearly accompanied by the fact that she is an accomplished business mind. You can read all about her new product on page 46. Do you look at other people’s lives and compare them to your own? Does this comparative exercise lead you to question your own validity? Am I happy enough? Am I fit enough? Slim enough? None of us should feel the need to engage in such relative thinking. As long as we are not affecting others through our actions, should we not ‘march to our own tune?’. Our fitness feature offers myriad ways and means to do just that! We have flooded these pages with strategies to help you get fit and feel good, to the beat of your own drum. Whilst you’re there, take a look at our ‘Fitness through the Ages’ article —

maybe one of these ideas will be perfect for you! Also included is a list of ‘freebies’: classes we can (and perhaps should) attend. We really hope to have covered something that you enjoy in Verve’s fitness special, whether it be walking, taking on a personal trainer or working with Wendy from Eastside Studio and her Power Plate! Just maybe we can collectively commit to getting into something that will undoubtedly leave us feeling fitter and healthier. Summer is around the corner! We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our amazing advertisers, because without them we would not have a magazine — thank you. Lastly, don’t forget that you can read Verve online, on your laptop, your phone or your tablet. Have a fabulous October!

LUIS BARRAGIN HOUSE & STUDIO:

MESMERIC MEXICAN MODERNISM

11

HOME & DESIGN

“Luis Barragán’s work was about building a feeling.”

//

The complex is the former residence of its esteemed architect Luis Barragán whose vision continues to inspire other designers globally. It is described by the Guardian as his “masterpiece” and “the ultimate synthesis of traditional and modern”— indeed, no other individual structure in Latin America is bestowed a Unesco title. Barragán built the house in 1948 and lived and worked there until his death 40 years later. Since then, little has been moved or changed. It serves as a museum, a tribute to Barragán’s work and life. The site comprises two lots, the house and workshop — numbers 12 and 14 — positioned on General Francisco Street in the working class neighbourhood of Tacubaya in western Mexico City. The colourful concrete construction spans a ground floor and two upper levels — including a roof terrace — that overlook an intimate garden replete with a fountain. It merges modernism, notes Unesco, “with traditional Mexican vernacular elements”. Immediately Barragán’s death, the Mexican government declared the property a national artistic monument affording it protection from unsolicited modification. Inside rest the original furniture and personal belongings of Barragán, including his library. An impressive art collection stretches all the way back to the 16th century and includes works by renowned Mexican painters such as Diego Rivera, alongside the occasional Picasso. The house also serves an exhibition space for visiting works. Barragán was born in Guadalajara in 1902 to a prominent Mexican family. He grew up on a ranch and first studied engineering and later — after travelling through western Europe — architecture. Guadalajara still hosts numerous homes that he designed and they, with others around the country, attract architectural students from around the world.

>>

OCT 2017

No other country in the Americas has more Unesco Heritage Sites than Mexico, and one of its most intriguing contemporary architectural examples is the Casa Luis Barragán—or the Luis Barragán House and Studio.

12

>> The Bauhaus movement influenced Barragán greatly, as did iconic modernist Le Corbusier. His work is often referred to as ‘emotional architecture’. According to Unesco, Barragán is credited with creating “a regional adaptation of the International Modern Movement in architectural design”. “Luis Barragán’s work was about building a feeling,” writes Brooke Bobb for Vogue. “… He was able to evoke emotion through his sense of eye-popping colour and geometry.” Barragán was of the opinion that a house was never finished, once commenting “it is an organism in constant evolution”.

In contrast to his legacy, in life, Barragán was little recognised — certainly not until later in his career, anyway. In 1975, New York’s Museum of Modern Art honoured him with a retrospective and shortly before he died, Barragán was awarded the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s most prestigious gong. Sixteen years later, Unesco listed his house and studio as a World Heritage Site, fitting for a man who believed, “My house is my refuge, an emotional piece of architecture, not a cold piece of convenience.”

MANSHAUSEN

//

We are proud to announce that Manshausen has won four prizes in the prestigious Architizer competition— the largest web-based platform for architecture in the world. With entries from more than 100 countries presenting the best of architecture worldwide, these awards represent an unparalleled honour. Situated at the water’s edge overlooking the spectacular scenery of Norway’s Steigen archipelago, this striking collection of Achitizer award-winning cabins was commissioned by renowned Norwegian polar explorer Børge Ousland in partnership with architect Snorre Stinessen. Inspired to design a unique exploration and adventure resort, Ousland purchased the 55-acre island of Manshausen in 2010 creating a vacation destination and concept that combines the rugged adventure of the Arctic and the striking artistry of modern design. Constructed and assembled on site, the prefabricated structures were designed to limit the impact on the pristine environment and highlight the beauty of the landscape. Each of the four cabins are placed to maximise the views while providing privacy for the occupants with floor-to-ceiling walls of glass facing the sea. Three of the four cabins are cantilevered over the stone moorings above the water, while the fourth is set on a rocky ledge at an angle to the coastline. Inside are a double room with main bed ideally positioned to experience the stunning scenery, and a second bedroom which is perfect for kids, or adults. A restored 18th-century farmhouse is converted into a communal kitchen and dining lounge for guests with an expedition library stocked with books from Borge’s personal collection. There are two relaxing

hot tubs, a salt water pool and a private beach along with endless wilderness for adventure. These modern shelters bring out the Arctic explorer and chic nomad in all of us!

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Breakfast is served daily in the main house. Optional guided adventure touring services include: sailing on the trimaran Northern Passage used by Børge Ousland and Thorleif Thorleifsson to sail around the Arctic; diving; kayaking; cooking courses; yoga instruction; fishing; trekking and climbing. Wi-Fi is in the main house.

AROUND

Situated in the Steigen archipelago off the coast of northern Norway, the island of Manshausen lies in the middle of the Grøtøy Strait between the dramatic peaks of the Lofoten mountains and the Barents Sea. Comprising 55 acres, the island and surrounding archipelago are an outdoor adventurer’s dream with endless winter and summer sports and dramatic unspoiled natural beauty. The former 17th-century harbour was a bustling trading post and fishing port and at one time one of the biggest in Norway. The small village of Nordskot is the heart of the island’s commercial centre, with a coastal museum and a shop or two, but for more services, shops and cafes you can grab a short boat or car ride to neighbouring Leinesfjord or Helnessund.

IT'S ALL IN THE FINISHING DETAIL THE PORCELAIN LOUNGE

Caroline Rennie wants people to make the linkage between the wellbeing of their home and their emotional wellbeing. This connection is the true essence of The Porcelain Lounge she says. The busy owner running two stores in Auckland and Wellington is convinced that the value of luxury home décor and coveted interior design pieces goes beyond the visual to the existential. “The Danish call it “hygge” (pronounced hue-guh) which means wellbeing and cosy. Your home is central to your wellbeing. For me luxury accessories and sculptural elements are critical to our whole interior design look and play a much more intrinsic part of who you are” she says. Walking through her ‘Salon of Style’, so many design jewels speak up from the shelves to make

their presence known. It’s a truly sensory experience being surrounded by stunning designs of European craftsmanship with elements of the whimsical. Pieces that really are seriously funky. Even before setting foot in the store, the front window claims your gaze. There sitting elegantly behind the glass is a floral female face stencilled in gold on an alabaster vase by celebrated Danish designer, Bjørn Wiinblad – think flower-power with panache. “The whole concept for The Porcelain Lounge is to showcase objects that have a sense of personality, provenance and a dedication to form and function so when you pick a piece up it’s got a lovely aesthetic to it which all adds to the experience” says Caroline. In one corner on display is a handmade porcelain collection by MUD Australia of the most elegant proportions in sophisticated colours such

as wasabi. The real delight is to hold the bowls that have a beautiful gloss on top, yet the underside feels like suede.

"You’ll feel like your home is shining, raising the look and reflecting back who you really are” Some of the Nordic brands stocked by Caroline include Kähler that has been producing ceramic art for 175 years since its first pieces appeared at the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris – where the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated. “In an ideal world we encourage clients to start here to pick out a couple of items that begin to inspire the look they want. It’s all about the finishing detail. You’ll feel like your home is shining, raising the look and reflecting back who you really are” she says.

The Porcelain Lounge website is purposely organised according to genre to extending this philosophy online and the store’s Instagram account helpfully suggests how particular pieces look in situ within specific colour schemes. Bold colour like that captured on a bold bowl by Kähler designed by Danish fashion designer, Stine Goya who brought fashionista to porcelain – the four glaze result in pink, yellow, grey with a gold trim has translated that intention beautifully. “You want to go home, to use items like this – inviting people around for a dinner party becomes lots of fun – people really admire these pieces” Caroline says “Some of these brands have been around for over 100 years, so you’re not going to be left wanting or disappointed.” 2/319 REMUERA ROAD REMUERA, AUCKLAND +64 9 524 4973 | HELLO@THEPORCELAINLOUNGE.COM

Property investing can be a risky business! Follow these tips to maintain a long-term reliable rental income from your investment property.

for better quality so you may be cutting some of the best tenants out of your market.

PURCHASE QUALITY FIXTURES & FITTINGS

PRICE-RENT RATIO

Under-budgeting, and purchasing low quality appliances is a mistake many property owners make. Low quality fixtures, fittings and appliances often require regular maintenance more frequently and need to be replaced after a much shorter period — causing the cost to be more expensive than if a quality item was purchased in the first place.

TENANT-LANDLORD RELATIONSHIPS

Maintaining a professional relationship with your tenants is a great way to encourage them to stay longer and take good care of your property, helping maintain a reliable rental income. Good communication and goodwill goes a long way in maintaining good landlord-tenant relationships. Tenants generally expect enquires and requests to be answered in a timely manner, and appreciate you being friendly and co-operative — remember goodwill reflects goodwill.

PREVENTATIVE REPAIRS

Does the roof need to be repaired? Are the windows leaking? Is the property secure? Look out for any preventative repairs required during property inspections to reduce the occurrence of damage over time.

INVESTING BADLY DURING RENOVATIONS

When landlords decide to invest in a rental property it’s often with the goal to increase its rent income and tenant demand. Yet all too often people fail to invest in quality products that will earn profits in the long-term. Though it’s tempting, try to avoid cheap, low quality paint, wallpaper, carpets and tiles. These have a habit of wearing out quickly. Plus, discerning tenants look

Don’t make the mistake of sealing the deal and purchasing investment properties without fully understanding the financial situation. Take the time to first consider what the cash-flow will be, how the property will help your financial position, and what initial maintenance may need to be done to attract good tenants. Analyse the gross yield and net yield of the property, then calculate what you will earn after all the costs are taken into account, you may even find the property isn’t as profitable as you first assumed.

MANAGING THE PROPERTY.

Managing properties is more than just being available to answer tenant calls all day every day. Make sure you keep on top of the paperwork too. Often we hear about landlords who let rent arrears get out of control with thousands owed. A simple spreadsheet and swift contact with the tenant can help you keep on top of rent arrears, maintenance costs, endings of tenancies, help you measure the financial success of the property, and remind you when the rent value can next be looked at, creating a less stressful investment and a more confident investor. Another common mistake made by self-managing landlords is the avoidance of properly checking and recording the condition of a property, at the beginning and end of each tenancy, and at regular property inspections, then letting damage go by without claiming the repair cost from the tenant. WHAT WILLWE BE WEARING THIS SUMMER? Another summer is peeking its nose over our horizon, the stores are full of shorter sleeves, lighter fabrics, soft florals and pretty pastels. I personally love the beginning of a new season. It’s the chance to begin again, to reinvent yourself. I particularly love the start of the summer season for it’s lightness and optimism. So what will we be wearing this summer? There’s a few big trends that are already making their presence felt in stores. Shirts: from oversized boyfriend shirts, cropped or wrap-around styles through to soft, ruffle sleeve blouses, shirts are making their mark as a summer staple. These are easy to wear, halftucked, fully tucked, tied or loose and work in almost any setting. Wear them with your jeans, shorts or skirts, take them to work or the beach but this year you’ll be wanting to wear a shirt. Shoulder details: off the shoulder, cold shoulder, cut-out shoulders. Last years’s ubiquitous shoulder play is back again for Spring/Summer ‘17. The good news? These are incredibly flattering and truly do look good no matter what your age. Wider leg pants: Girls, it might just about be time to retire the skinny jeans. The new silhouette has a wider leg that is elegant and lengthening. Pants caught in at the hem still figure, as do the drop-crotch styles we’ve all come to love. Linen: from dresses, shirts, tops and pants you know it’s truly summer when the linen pieces start to hit the racks. Forget about how 'difficult' it is to look neat and embrace the relaxed-ness of crumpled linen in pastel shades in your summer wardrobe.

Full skirts: Fashions flirtation with Princess Diana’s signature styling has not gone away. This year you’ll find full skirts gathered onto a yoke in stores. These are worn mid-calf or below. A slightly tricky look for those of us with a long torso or fuller of thigh. Oh, and if you’re a shortie? Please take up the hem to avoid being a walking skirt. Ruffles and frills: see above! Remember these add bulk to your frame so add ruffle where you can carry it rather than an area that doesn’t need any additional ‘pouff’. My best advice for summer? Try something new. Who knows? You might even like it! Want a hand to navigate the new season? How about help creating room for it in your wardrobe? I’d absolutely love to help! Just pick up the phone or drop me an email – lets’ do coffee! Jackie O’Fee is owner of Signature Style. Our Client's Before and after Post Treatment — 21 days "Leanne understands how debilitating living with Melasma is. For years I’ve lived with feeling the only way I would be accepted was to cover my face with what I named ‘fake up’. I would avoid anything where I couldn't remain hidden beneath make up. Things like swimming, staying over at friends, exercising, dating became things that I could no longer enjoy.

Before

After

Leanne went to every length to work out the best method available to remove the pigmentation and to make sure this was a treatment that latest long term - unlike laser. Her empathy and 30 years experience made me comfortable and I trusted her. My life’s now changed thanks to Leanne. For the first time in years, I feel I can get up and look someone in the eye without rushing off to the bathroom to cover up. HEALTH & BEAUTY //

OUR SECOND SPRING

OCT 2017

Traditional Chinese medicine tells us that when a woman reaches menopause she is entering her 'second spring'. The term stems from the value Chinese culture places on mature women - the respect and reverence held for their life experience and wisdom. Conversely, Western culture can be less than honouring of the changes that occur during ‘the meno years’. A woman goes through massive physiological changes in her forties and fifties. Just like puberty and pregnancy this life period is a time of hormonal fluctuations. Changes, such as a short fuse, sleeplessness, brain fog, night sweats, anxiety, hot flushes and depression, generally begin making their presence felt in our fourties. Many of us don’t notice them creep up and, if we do, may wonder if we’re going a bit la-la. Others prefer to stay firmly in the land of denial. Jayne Kiely is a vibrant example of second spring. The former athlete turned TV presenter represented New Zealand in long jump at two Commonwealth Games before gracing our screen in series such as Mountain Dew On The Edge and Mitre 10 Dream Home. Jayne again switched careers at 50 going into real estate after years of renovating homes with her pilot husband, Paul. The mother of two sons, Tom, 19, and Jack, 17, Jayne finds it liberating that her family is becoming more self-reliant. “Age has never bothered me, I think it’s more of an attitude,” she says. “I have noticed some changes. My waist has thickened and I’ve experienced hot flushes – it was while I was working so I closed my eyes and hoped nobody noticed!” Enter biochemist and physiologist, Peter Lehrke, who heads up Meno-Me®, a company with the tagline 'The Change Of Life Can Be The Time of Your Life®.' “While at a trade fair in Hong Kong, I met Dr Jae Kim who was presenting EstroG-100™, a herbal menopause supplement he’d developed. I was intrigued because it balances fluctuating hormones using three herbs that have been used in Asian cooking for centuries,” says Peter. “He talked about how safe it was, how it was the only product in its category in Canada that required no warning labels and it had two gold standard clinical trials that showed its efficacy. It was so outstanding I brought it to New Zealand.”

“I’ve been taking EstroG-100™ for a while now and my flushes have stabilised, I love that it’s all natural,” says Jayne. “I’m also using Meno-Me®’s new product, Shake It Off®, a nutritional powder Peter’s formulated. I’m not taking it to lose weight – though it’s great for weight management – I’m taking it as a multi-vitamin.” Jayne credits her slim body to her athletic background, but she’s quick to point out she eats healthy food. Stops at the drivethrough are not on her agenda and if she does notice she’s gaining weight she cuts out processed food. While the East celebrates the wisdom and grace of a woman as she grows older, there are a group of women in the West who are silently suffering, hence the birth of Meno-Me®. ESTROG-100™ HERBAL BLEND EstroG-100™ is made from three herbal roots: • Cynanchum wilfordii (climbing vines) • Phlomis umbrosa (sage-like herbs) • Angelica gigas Nakai (a perennial used in food, medicine and as a flavouring) The Stages of Menopause* Perimenopause • 45-49: the lead up to menopause when hormones can fluctuate wildly, periods are still occurring. Menopause • 45-55: this is a time when the final period occurs. The paradox is women can’t pinpoint their final period until they haven’t had one for a year. Postmenopause • 55+: symptoms start to subside as a result of hormonal levels stabilising. * Symptoms can anywhere from 2-19 years with an average of five years.

THE TOOTH COMPANY

TOOTH GRINDING

Come and see us for fantastic gifts for all ages, all of your family’s health needs and excellent advice.

Dr Andrew Campbell talks to us about ‘tooth grinding’ or Bruxism. HOW COMMON IS TOOTH GRINDING?

Study’s have shown that up to 95% of the population can grind or clench their teeth at some point in their lives. Bruxism is the medical term given to a habitual grinding of the teeth and effects one in every 20 adults and approximately 30% of children.

WHAT CAUSES BRUXISM?

Stress and anxiety are the most common causes. factors may be jaw misalignment, crooked or missing sinus problems, sleep disorders, or a side effect of antidepressants. Emotional factors may also exacerbate and bruxing.

Other teeth, some stress

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM GRINDING MY TEETH?

Approximately 20% of people who suffer from bruxism don’t even know they do it. Some clues to watch out for are: Headaches: If you wake up with headaches or have them after a stressful day, it could be due to your facial and head muscles being fatigued from all the teeth clenching and grinding. You may also experience ear aches.

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMME FOR WOMEN

Jaw pain: When your jaw muscles are overworked, you can experience jaw pain. This can translate to the jaw joint and cause TMJ disorder (Temporomandibular Joint disorder). Tooth damage: Worn down or loose teeth are extremely common. Some people grind their teeth with a very high force. Over time, this force can be extremely damaging to the teeth. This wear on the enamel can also cause tooth sensitivity. Neck and shoulder pain: Your neck and shoulder muscles will compensate for your tired jaw muscles, resulting in you waking up with neck and shoulder tension and achiness often combined with fatigue.

HOW IS TOOTH GRINDING TREATED?

During a dental examination, a dentist may recognise damage resulting from bruxism, including: enamel loss from the chewing surfaces of teeth, flattened tooth surfaces, loosened teeth, and fractured teeth and fillings. To prevent further damage to the teeth, bruxism is treated by placing a removable, custom-fitted plastic appliance called a night guard between the upper and lower teeth. In cases where jaw muscles are very tight, a dentist may prescribe muscles relaxants. Left untreated bruxism can be very destructive (and can lead to tooth loss and jaw dysfunction) — so it is essential if you think you grind your teeth to have this checked by your dentist and managed appropriately.

ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT THE HEALTH OF YOUR SKIN?

Is a clinic, that has the best of the best technology so you always get results, on your wishlist? Is your dream to find therapists who live and breathe skin? You’ve found us! I’m a former registered nurse and as such I, and my team, focus on what’s happening inside your body and how it affects your complexion. Often we can trace the roots of skin concerns like redness, blemishes, pigmentation, premature lines and wrinkles to lifestyle factors. We’re obsessed with skin health. It’s the lifeblood of our business and knowing we can help you gain a beautiful, radiant complexion is extraordinarily satisfying. We use amazing tools like Skin DNA, Reveal Diagnostic Technology and the most advanced skincare around like Dermalogica, MediK8 and One Truth 818 Serum.

REVEAL DIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY

This is a high-tech machine that reveals the amount of pigmentation (sun damage and brown spots), redness and broken capillaries in your skin. These aren’t visible to the naked eye so this imaging gives you a heads-up on what you may need to work on, like say, upping the richness of your moisturiser or adding flaxseed oil to your diet.

DERMALOGICA FACE MAPPING

Dermalogica’s face mapping is based on traditional Chinese medicine and allows your skincare therapist to see how your skin is doing and what internal conditions could be affecting your skin. For example, blemishes around the sides of your mouth could indicate something going on with your hormones.

Let’s take a closer look at those:

ONE TRUTH 818 SERUM

SKIN DNA

We take a swab from the inside of your cheek and send it off to our lab for processing. It measures 16 genetic markers (SNPs) in five categories associated with skin ageing: firmness, elasticity, wrinkles, sun damage and pigmentation and sensitivity and inflammation.

Touted as the world’s most powerful anti-ageing serum, One Truth 818 is based on the award-winning work of molecular biologist Dr Bill Andrews PhD whose goal is to stop ageing.

The results allow us to prescribe a skincare regime specifically for you.

ELLE MACPHERSON We chat with the iconic Australian supermodel about her move into the wellness industry, her alkalising supplement the Super Elixir, and the importance of being healthy both on the inside and outside.

FITNESS FEATURE

VERVE INTERVIEWS

//

Over the years I have learnt that if I nourish my cells from the inside it will show on the outside. This is why I established WelleCo three years ago with my co-founder Andrea Horwood Bux. We wanted to start a premium wellness company based around the extraordinary alkalising formula I was originally prescribed by Dr Laubscher PhD, my Nutritional Doctor. Our first product was an all-natural and wholefood daily multivitamin, THE SUPER ELIXIR Alkalising Formula. THE SUPER ELIXIR is made from 45 premium wholefood bio-live ingredients, that are carefully selected to work together, ensuring maximum absorption. When you are nourished and maintain a healthy pH balance, it can assist with lowering acidity in the body that can lead to inflammation, low energy, weight gain and accelerated ageing of the cells. It has transformed the way I feel, and made me realise what a profound impact good nutrition can have on the way I feel and how this can show on the outside. What is the philosophy behind the Super Elixir, your flagship product? We are often asked why we don't provide THE SUPER ELXIR in pill form. Human beings have been conditioned over many thousands of years to absorb and safely use vitamins and minerals in their naturally occurring state - from wholefoods. Our bodies

For the body to work optimally, balance is important and so much of our food, processed for convenience can have little nutritional value. This, along with stress and modern living habits, can mean our bodies are not functioning at their optimal healthy rate, throwing our system into an acidic state.

OCT

Welleco frequently discusses the importance of having an alkaline-based diet. What exactly does this entail? Is there a scientific basis behind it? I have learnt that by reducing acid-forming foods and replacing them with ‘live’ nutrients and raw produce, that the body can return to a healthy balanced state and allow the digestive system and liver to rest and recuperate.

business to it. From the beginning, we knew that for an informed customer, adding a powerful natural bio-live ingestible to their daily routine would be a no-brainer.

How do you find and choose the ingredients for your products? We specialise in making premium whole food and organic ingestibles, developed by our nutritional doctor. All ingredients work in synergy. Every ingredient is included for a reason. Each nutrient is recognised and every ingredient is live, active and easily absorbed by the body at a cellular level.

We started WelleCo to bridge new ground between wellness and beauty.

We carefully source the premium wholefood ingredients for THE SUPER ELIXIR, Nourishing Protein and Sleep Welle Tea from known and trusted suppliers. All-natural, plant based and hand made in Australia. Would you say that the pace of modern society is responsible for these nutritional imbalances? Modern life has become a bombardment of toxins. From the chemicals in our foods, the ones we put on our skin, the ones we pump into the atmosphere, to the stress of our busy lives. WelleCo’s vision is to make it easy for people to make good choices for themselves. Keeping it simple, without the pressure. None of us are perfect, we aim to inform on living well and encourage the idea to simply do the best you can. Andrea and I could see a real shift in lifestyle priorities and an increasing emphasis on wellness, mindfulness and the concept of beauty beginning from within. We both believe in the profound effect of good nutrition and wanted to share these special bio-live, plant-based nutrients from Australia. Do you think that there is a growing awareness about being healthy on the inside as well as the outside? We believe this is a profound shift and that the future of beauty is ingestibles that are natural, absorbable and food-based. What are your top tips for general wellbeing? At 53 I am more aware of my health and wellness. These days, like many women, I understand beauty radiates from the inside out. If you take care of your gut, nourish your body with clean, natural nutrients on a cellular level and try to live with a balanced alkaline diet, you will feel well and look better on the outside. Then throw in plenty of love and laughter to the mix. This is what works for me. Can you give Verve readers any hints of new products to come? From the beginning, we have set out to ‘create the things you wish existed’. We believe wellness and beauty isn’t defined by age or gender; it involves making the best choices for yourself and your family. We have just launched in Sephora Australia and Lane Crawford in Asia and plans are in place for our own flagship store in the US. Before the year ends, we are releasing our new product range of WelleCo Supernaturals. These are our list of must-haves in the bathroom, essential everyday natural products for the whole family to use. WelleCo has achieved so much in just over three years and we have a lot more to come. I am grateful and proud of WelleCo’s success and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Today WelleCo is available in over 60 countries and our online store has a global reach. THE SUPER ELIXIR sells out repeatedly through Net-a-Porter and Selfridges, is a bestseller at David Jones here and this year was named Best Beauty Product 2017 by Tatler magazine in the UK. What we are most proud of is our loyal and ever-growing list of global customers and self-appointed ambassadors who genuinely love the product.

JOSEF RAKICH

THE TRANSFORMER

PEOPLE LIKE US

THE SUPER ELIXIR

When Massey resident Josef Rakich was just 17, his mother won a trial membership at the local gym and encouraged him to try it out. After noticing positive changes in his body and personal fitness, he started working out regularly and taking nutrition seriously. His passion for the gym and good nutrition was ignited. Following advice from fellow gym members and mentors, he researched the most beneficial foods for him and created his own meal plan. He studied personal training and nutrition and began work as a personal trainer. As he posted images of his ever-improving physique, his online profile grew, as did interest in his fitness regime and meal plans. The number of requests increased so rapidly, he decided to make the plans available for purchase. This was the beginning of Josef Rakich Fitness (JRF). He was soon developing customised meal plans for hundreds of people every week. Business skyrocketed and in 2012 the JRF website went live. Using each client’s personal body statistics, lifestyle, circumstances and food preferences including any allergies or injuries, Josef calculates the calories needed for optimum weight management and daily food and calorie intake recommendations. JRF enjoys a strong online presence, providing clients with constant updates and motivational posts. The online help centre provides a rapid response and personal connection to Josef. Josef recently launched his Keto Diet Meal Plan to more than four million followers. Based on the popular low-carb, high-fat Keto diet, the plan promises huge benefits for the body and for the brain. A pioneer in the online body transformation industry, Josef has strong links with the US fitness industry and recently attended the Mr Olympia Expo in Las Vegas sharing insights with fitness industry entrepreneurs. He has an equally strong sense of social justice which saw him commit his total profit for September to the Houston Food Bank, set up to provide meals for hungry residents and families affected by deadly Hurricane Harvey. Josef will be appearing at Big Boys Toys - judging at the Auckland Strongman Series, meeting fans and talking about what it takes to become the best we can be. A SPRINKLING OF FAIRY DUST Next month the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra is joining forces with premier Auckland circus theatre company, The Dust Palace, to perform Midnight, a contemporary production that combines scores such as Swan Lake with mime and aerial acrobatics. “It’s such a cool thing for us to be part of,” beams Eve Gordon, who co-founded The Dust Palace with partner Mike Edward in 2009. “It’s a real validation because we’re trying to forge the legitimacy of New Zealand circus as high class art so to have the stamp of approval from the classical music scene is very important.” I catch up with Eve just before The Dust Palace heads for its second Canadian tour to perform in Vancouver and Montreal — the home of the Cirque du Soleil whom Eve praises for raising the profile of modern circus. Though, she laments, there is still much work to be done outside of North America. “On our first trip to Canada, we were told that our work was authentic

and obviously from a different place to the major international schools, which was so cool to hear,” says Eve. “We plan to further explore our uniqueness and New Zealand identity with future projects. I grew up in Rotorua were it was 50% Maori, so I have a real interest in telling our stories.” Eve was 12 when she decided she was destined to be an entertainer — an actor, to be precise. As a child, she also practised ballet (“I still use that body concept of grace and extension today”), though her lack of gymnastic skills and physical courage (“I was terrible, and not brave as a kid!”) meant there was no hint of the quite literal high-flying career to come. Eve went on to attend Unitec’s drama school where she met Beth Kayes, one of the founders of Legs on the Wall in Australia. “They were the first people to perform in harnesses off the side of buildings,” says Eve. “Beth introduced me to basic acrobatics and I was hooked. I found all of the places I

could possibly train, and around six years later, I began performing professionally, and have been doing so now for 8 years”. (You may also recognise Eve from Shortland Street, or The Almighty Johnsons.) Not being a natural physical risk taker, I ask how she dealt with the height. “I still have a fairly strong fear of mortality, which I think is useful in many ways,” Eve says. “This type of work demands a healthy dose of respect.” While researching the circus, Eve discovered the work of Spanish scribe Federico Garcia Lorca and connected with his philosophy of being always aware of death in order to live properly. She describes the rush of performing as “one of the most amazing things in the world”. “My parents studied and now teach vipassana meditation which is an awareness technique to focus on the present moment, and that nothing else matters,”

WHY‘THE DUST PALACE’?

“Years ago, I was working for this weird art performance on K-Road that was a cross between circus and experimental filmmaking and we had to climb across these high beams that were so dirty that my friend, Sarah Houbolt, had to take a vacuum cleaner up there. She said that it was like a dust palace. Around 10 months later I was looking for a name to encompass all of the things that we were trying to achieve from organising events to doing theatre shows and making films and it instantly came back to my mind.”

Eve continues. “Circus performance is very much like that. It expands time in a similar way to when you’re in an accident and the adrenalin kicks in enabling you to react superfast while time seems to slow down. Performing is similar, but without the tragedy or drama — unless you’re performing a tragedy or drama!” Eve reveals that circus performance requires 20% of the brain to be switched to safety mode at all times. “It’s different to actors, you can’t go crazy and get lost in what you’re doing,” she adds. “When you first start out, it’s the other way around, you must focus 80% on safety and 20% on analysing your performance, then it stays at 50-50 for many years, then 80-20 when you’re very experienced.” High-wire acts and their ilk are obviously a real confidence booster also. “People feel good about themselves when they can hold themselves up by a single hand four metres in the air,” says Eve. “It qualifies your body as something that is more than beauty, as something that is functional. ‘Can I do this movement? Not yet, but if I train harder and longer then I will achieve it.’ It develops a trust in yourself that seeps into other areas of your life.” The Dust Palace also runs daily circus schools, including scholarship programs for underprivileged kids. Performing aside, Eve gets just as much of a thrill from

watching students’ confidence soar. “It’s incredible how much they grow, and how rewarding it feels,” she says. “It’s a very humbling experience. There have been several studies around the benefits of circus arts, especially for kids that don’t fit into the norm. It has been shown to create new pathways in the brain which greatly benefit the brain’s functionality. The beauty of circus theatre is that there is a discipline for every brain structure, whether it be the analytical types usually drawn to juggling, or the little monkeys that can’t sit still and need to channel their energy.” And then there is the sense of belonging. “It’s a community,” says Eve. “People talk about the ‘circus family’, and it’s so true because when you are undertaking dangerous tasks with a group of people in a non-competitive environment, with everyone working towards the same goals, it forges trust and a connection in a way that nothing else does.” For more information about The Dust Palace, check out thedustpalace.co.nz. Midnight will be performed with the APO at the Aotea Centre on 23 November. Tickets available through Ticketmaster. — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

BARRE CLASS:

YOGA:

For the past couple of years barre has certainly been one of the trendiest fitness regimes around, and not without reason; it's a full-body workout that targets muscle groups you didn't even know existed through a series of low-impact, high-repetition exercises inspired by dancers' training. Its focus on isometric strength training promotes small muscle contractions that isolate those hard-to-work muscles to improve overall definition, flexibility and balance. Studios such as Barrefigure in Ponsonby operated by ex-dancer Marysa Dalton cater to different levels of expertise and fitness from beginner to advanced, as well as different variations of barre such as yoga, HIIT or cardio-infused classes to keep the workout varied and challenging. A standard class follows a 60-minute format divided up into sections which focus on different parts of the body such as the upper body, thighs and glutes, and

Although forms of yoga now number into the hundreds, the yin side of yoga practice especially provides a welcome relief from our busy lives. Rather than the dynamic and active movements of yang practice which characterise many contemporary styles, yin's focus lies within slow-paced and meditative asanas (poses) aimed at applying pressure on tendons and ligaments to increase circulation and aid recovery from fatigue. The very challenge of yin lies within its slow pace and long holds of up to five minutes, which makes it both a great companion to the more high-intensity elements of your exercise regime and a valuable space to relax and reflect in Auckland's fast-paced urban environment. Yin practice like those offered by CBD-based Studio Red are great for beginners to yoga by running classes at room temperature with ambient lighting and a sound-proofed space. So close your eyes, breathe deep, and get in touch with your inner self.

Hot yoga has been moving around fitness circles for a long time, but hot pilates is a new and challenging twist to the discipline by combining a conventional class format with a turning up of the heat. If you have tried Bikram yoga and found the 40-degree heat not to your liking, don't write it off too quickly; rather than the heavy, sauna-style atmosphere that haunts many experiences, Parnell studio RISE Yoga & Pilates heats its studio at a much more manageable 27 degrees with a low-humidity system that keeps the atmosphere light and fresh. The positives of regular pilates practice are well-known in boosting flexibility, blood flow and core stability, so the added heat creates a faster route to relaxing the muscles. As you partake in a smooth and dynamic workout consisting of low squats, sit-ups, roll-downs and 'magic circle' exercises to get those core muscles working hard, you will be feeling ready for the new reason in no time!

To broaden the range of well-being practices available from her studio, Wendy began to network regularly with like-minded others. Three women who already had their own successful practices seemed like a natural fit with the studio’s ethos: Lynda Moore, a financial mentor; Mandy Beverley, a facilitator for personal growth; and Meryn Wakelin, a naturopath and medical herbalist. All were committed to equipping people with the tools needed to emerge from growth-limiting situations that jeopardised well-being. The powerhouse quartet have converged their individual practices into the same studio. The Eastside Studio Group has emerged as an allencompassing collection of pathways towards wellness, prosperity and self-realisation. An alluring synergy arises from bringing these four practitioners together under one roof. And they share one unarguable conviction. Whatever the way forward, positive change requires a willingness to change, to implement some new practices that can become healthy habits. Clients must recognise that whatever their starting point, they are empowered to reach the destination they desire. "We’re not here to fix anybody," says Mandy. "Our clients just need to be reminded of what they already know.’"The message is clearly being heard and acted upon. In Parnell, good things — and good people — just keep getting better.

WENDY BOBSIEN Three years ago, personal trainer Wendy Bobsien surveyed the fitness industry and spotted a segment of the market that wasn’t being looked after properly. Too many men and women in the 40-plus age group, she realised, feared they were too old, too fat or too unfit to step inside a traditional gym, and yet they longed to regain the bounce that seemed to have deserted them. A compact boutique gym she called the Eastside Studio proved to be the ideal solution. "It's a safe space for physical transformation," says Wendy, "where clients can train in privacy using state-of-the-art equipment like Power Plate and pilates machines to achieve defined goals." — EASTSIDESTUDIO.CO.NZ

Mandy says introducing a new perspective to an old situation allows more comfortable, satisfying and creative ways of doing things to emerge. LYNDA MOORE Lynda Moore was an accountant with 20 years of practice under her belt when post-graduate studies in psychology brought to light some fascinating theory for the loss of control so many people experience in the area of personal finances. Financial goals are much more easily achieved, she learned, when someone understands the link between their ‘money mindset’ and their day-to-day management of the dollars and cents. Lynda now harmonises her no-nonsense money talk with a powerful blend of psychology and neuroscience that transforms a previously dispiriting experience of reading a bank statement into a plan for growth. With creative vision, money becomes a useful tool in life. "Once you eliminate emotion from financial management," says Lynda, "it’s much easier to start to build some wealth." — MONEYMENTALIST.COM

MERYN WAKELIN The most recent member of the Eastside Studio Group is Meryn Wakelin, a naturopath, medical herbalist and massage therapist. Nutrition is her first medicine and Meryn’s approach to all health issues and disease processes is based on looking for, and removing, the underlying drivers and supporting a healing process with herbal medicine, nutrients and bio-regulatory medicines where necessary. Whether her clients are recovering from chemotherapy, are plagued by IBS, have a hormone imbalance, depression, anxiety, or simply feel exhausted and 'haven't felt well since...' Meryn supports clients with these therapies to take charge of their own health. "We are designed to be healthy," says Meryn, "and I want my clients to feel amazing, fighting fit, full of life and happy to be alive." — HEALNATURALLY.CO.NZ

DR REBECCA STAFFORD

Q&A ABOUT WEIGHT CONTROLWITH DR HABIT

Premium health psychology coaching for the successful woman who can control everything - except her weight. WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS?

The successful woman who is frustrated by weight struggles. She feels she has tried everything and is tired of being judged by people who don’t understand how tough it is. She may have lost weight only to regain it.

Complicated regimes and stringent diets have all been known to fail. Our body is like memory foam and this can often lead people to disappointment and frustration. Healthy diet, exercise and everything in moderation is the best way. Once we deprive ourselves, the increase to want something drives us to extreme, if we starve ourselves our body will store fat and come back with vengeance later, and this can all lead to serious illness and complications. It is mostly common sense, looking after ourselves and keeping a healthy balance. It can prove difficult for many, our lifestyle and work habits can limit us, along with raising a family and the many pressures that do not always allow us the time to exercise. Stress and fatigue, play a big role in our wellbeing and with so much else to juggle, it can be easier said than done. One important element in all of this is water. Simple, available and the benefits are huge. Our body is approximately 60% water. Drinking enough water maintains our balance and helps to transport nutrients within the body, and also aides digestion, calorie control and of course, body temperate. Other benefits include reducing the burden on our kidneys and liver by helping to flush out waste products, and may also lower the incidence of bladder and colon cancer by preventing the build-up of carcinogens. Water is also hugely beneficial for your skin, muscles and joints, by aiding moisture to your skin and helping to reduce problematic skin issues and supplying oxygen to the muscles and lubrication to the joints thereby making both stronger. When we consider that our muscles consist of approximately 75% water, the brain 90%, bones 22% and blood 83%, it seems like the best possible thing we can do is to provide the necessary and vital amount of water we require daily to also protect our vital organs, help to absorb nutrients better and for our general well-being. If you are doing strenuous exercise or your body is over-heated, you will need more. Always be mindful of carrying water with you. Do not go to an extreme, as too much water can be dangerous, again use your common sense and feed your body sensibly. We have no excuse not be able to look after our body, health and mind with H2O! — Words: Donna Malneek

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT WEIGHT-CONTROL? One is not realising there are easier ways of managing weight than relying on energy-sapping, fallible, will-power. Another common misunderstanding is thinking weight is all about eating less and moving more: few people realise the extent of psychology – stress in particular – in weight control.

HOW IS STRESS INVOLVED IN WEIGHT?

Chronic stress can cause unwanted weight gain in several ways. It lowers the metabolism — making it easier to gain weight (hence the saying “I just have to look at a donut and it goes on my hips”) — and harder to lose it. Stress also triggers emotional eating habits.

HOW DO YOU HELP?

First of all, I understand how motivated my clients are to lose weight, how hard they try, and how tired they are of struggling. Secondly, we boost the metabolism by reducing the cause of the stress — and the cause isn’t always that obvious — with effective but little known psychology strategies. Thirdly, we use behavior psychology strategies to boost healthy lifestyle habits the easy way (little - if any - willpower needed) as well as reducing less healthy habits — such as emotional eating.

WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND?

I’ve spent 12 years studying and practising psychology; including a Ph.D. in health psychology from the University of Auckland, eight years volunteering as a Lifeline telephone counsellor, and a private practice as a health psychology coach.

HOW MANY SESSIONS DO CLIENTS USUALLY HAVE?

Some clients get everything they need from a single session. Others prefer on-going support.

DO YOU FOCUS ON WEIGHT LOSS?

No. We focus on boosting emotional and physical health. Weight issues are far easier to resolve from a healthy place.

HOW MANY CLIENTS CAN YOU COACH?

I currently have space in my schedule for two more clients.

EXERCISE THROUGH THE AGES

65

FITNESS FEATURE //

This is the perfect time to start exercising. Incorporate both cardio and strength training into your weekly routine. Strength training is of particular importance as it staves off osteoporosis and other health problems in the future, as well as building muscle definition, so make sure you do this 2-3 days a week. Try to alternate with cardio, of which you should do regularly and with as much variety as possible (circuit training, running, etc.). The thing with being in your 20s is, the earlier you start the healthier you’ll be later in life, both physically and cognitively!

30s

This is around the time when your heart’s maximum rate falls, so you’ll want to improve this by running in intervals. A good example is alternating jogging and short moments of sprinting, and circuit training is also a good choice. However, if you’re looking to lose weight at this age, strength training is a better bet for you than cardio. Your muscle mass will also fall as you age, which is why you want to take up strength training such as weight lifting and push ups. Just remember that the key is to not get your body into one particular strength training routine. Switch things up!

40s

Now that you’re in your 40s, you’ll be losing muscle mass as well as balance. This means your focus should be on flexibility and your sense of balance, as both are affected by the aforementioned muscle loss as well as stiffness. Cardio is still crucial for keeping your weight down, but resistance training should be the ultimate focus at this age. Focus on push-ups, lunges, bicep curls, etc. Dynamic stretching is also encouraged, which is where you move as you stretch (e.g. squats), as opposed to the riskier static stretching. The former allows improved balance, which is essential as you age.

50s

If you’re in your 50s, you should seriously consider yoga as a form of exercise. Not only is this exercise fantastic

If you’re not a fan of yoga, however, swimming is another great option. This exercise also helps strengthen your bones, but on top of that, cardio is a good preventative exercise against breast cancer. Weight training is also a fantastic and highly recommended form of exercise, as it works all your muscles.

60s

Start off slow, and try to build up to exercising five times a week. So long as you do light exercises, it will help with joint problems. Simple daily changes to accommodate more movement does wonders, such as walking instead of driving. It will also help with cholesterol, balance, high blood pressure, and the endless list carries on. Yoga and pilates can be something else you consider as they strengthen the core. Stick with other low-impact exercises such as swimming, walking, and cycling. If you’re up for it, weight-bearing exercises like climbing stairs can help with maintaining bone density.

70s

At this age it is essential to be aware of your joints and balance. Balance is especially vital when it comes to finding the right exercise for you, as those that require it can be dangerous and thus should be avoided. Walking up and down stairs, on the other hand, is a great weightbearing exercise, and will help with osteoporosis. Just move around as much as possible! Try going for a low impact cardio routine 2-3 times a week. A good idea is swimming, especially if you have cranky joints. Otherwise, opt for an exercise bike to reap the benefits of cycling without the danger that comes with balance! To help with bone strength, now is a great time to learn squats and lunges to increase your muscle mass. Whatever your age, it’s never too late to improve your body. After all, it’s your vehicle through life, and it’ll thank you in the long run! — Words: Minnie Jung

TRANSFORM WITH TAYLA

When it comes to New Zealand body building and sports modelling, there’s no bigger competition than the NABBA/WFF National Championships. Formed back in 1950 in the UK, NABBA was the first original competitive body building association and famous past NABBA stars include Steve Reeves (Hercules Movies) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (four time champion). WFF became registered in 1998 and althoughthe two are vastly different — NABBA caters for a moremuscular physique while WFF caters for a more athletic look — the two are connected and hold national and international competitions for both men and women each year. The NABBA Top Of The South awards were recently held in Nelson and showcased some of the best in the business. Tayla Anderson won both Short and Top of The South overall this year. She also won the national championships held in Christchurch, and will compete at the 2017 NABBA/WFF National Championships in two weeks time. On top of that, she's a personal trainer! Verve caught up with Tayla to find out a little bit more about the sport and what it takes to compete in such a large scale competition. What inspired you to get into the sport? My dad (Mark Anderson) also competes for NABBA and has done since I was very young. He is also a personal trainer, so I grew up around the sport and was around him during his dieting and preparation process. I think initially what I enjoyed about training in the gym was the awesome feeling it gave me — a sense of strength, empowerment and achievement. That feeling is what drives me. What’s your favourite part of doing what you do? I love having something to work towards because it adds fuel to my training and it challenges me. I love showing other people what can be achieved through hard work and dedication. As a trainer, it is also important that I can practise what I preach. How did you prepare for the competition? I spent four months in a dieting phase where I restricted my calorie intake daily. Once I learnt what I could eat within that calorie count while still hitting my macros, I established my diet. My training consisted of five sessions a week — splitting each training session into specific muscle groups. I also checked in with my coach weekly for eight weeks prior to the event. This

included half-hour sessions of practising my posing and making sure I was staying on track and looking ready to compete. Outside of that, I practised on average twice a week by myself for 15 minutes or so. Was there a special diet you had to stick to? Yes, I followed a very strict diet that consisted of meat, vegetables, eggs, protein shakes, greek yoghurt, brown rice, quinoa, rolled oats, tuna, rice crackers, cottage cheese, coffee and peanut butter, of course. Do you train alongside other competitors or is it quite a solo sport? Everyone has their own approach to training and what works for them but I don’t tend to train with other competitors. In my experience, I have been shown a lot of support and encouragement from other competitors including others I will be competing against. We all understand the process and how hard it can be.Of course it’s also a competition and you want to go out there and win. Being unsupportive of other competitors is not going to boost your chances of winning. I have met a lot of cool people through competing and continue to stay in contact with them through social media. What’s next for you? At this stage I just want to relax and enjoy summer. I don't plan on competing next year. Five months is a long time to sacrifice in one year, and my body deserves a rest. I’ll be focusing on my personal training business for now. Is there any advice you would give to someone wanting to start competing? Go for it! Anyone can achieve what I have but you’ll need to be prepared to be disciplined and work bloody hard! The process can definitely be a struggle, but if you want it bad enough, you’ll get through it.

OSTEOPOROSIS

BONE HEALTH

MASKING AIR POLLUTION

You all have heard about “Osteoporosis”. There is a lot of recent interest in maintaining good bone health. In health shops you will find lots of supplements trying to promote the efficacy of their products. To talk about these supplements we need another article. I am going to give some over view of Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease of bones where they become thin. The inner architecture of the bones becomes thinner and bones become fragile. It means these are easy to break/fracture. If somebody has osteoporosis and has a fall (not from a height) the chances are higher that they can break/fracture their hip bones. It has devastating effects on their future independence. It is fixed by an operation. Osteoporosis is predominantly a disease of post-menopausal women. Men are also affected in their later years of life but women make the majority of the cases. The risk factors for developing this disease include post-menopausal state, smoking, excess alcohol, family history of osteoporosis, race, certain treatments for breast cancer. In most other diseases excess weight/obesity is a risk factor but in osteoporosis slim people are more at risk. If you have family history of osteoporosis or you are a postmenopausal woman and want to know whether you have osteoporosis, it is a time to visit your doctor. There are no blood tests to diagnose the osteoporosis. Blood tests become abnormal when there is some complication. It is diagnosed by a DEXA scan which is a special type of X-ray that measures bone mineral density (BMD). DEXA stands for "dual energy X-ray absorptiometry". The results show three types, normal bone mineral density, osteopenia (thing of the bone more than normal but less than osteoporosis) and osteoporosis. Once you are diagnosed with osteoporosis your doctor can discuss different treatment options with you. He/she might refer you to the specialist. If you have osteopenia or osteoporosis it is good time to look at your life style and risk factors. Refraining from smoking, cutting down on your alcohol intake and taking up regular exercise would definitely help. Weight bearing exercises are very useful. You need to get in touch with Physiotherapists who will advise you/guide you for proper exercises. In my hospital in Gisborne (Gisborne Hospital) our Physiotherapists Jon Lush and Glen Smith are running 6 weeks of exercise classes for this disease. They have different exercise programmes for osteoporosis and osteopenia. On completion of 6 week classes patients are given their own exercise book to keep doing these exercises at home. It helps to build and strengthen bones. The last resort is tablets or injection which your specialist can discuss with you. The healthy and nutritionally balanced diet also plays a role in maintain good bone health.

This was only achieved because of the 100% commitment and focus of our team. Tell us the importance behind the brand and mask being NZ made? The essential ingredient of our product, the wool filter, will always come from sheep bred in the mountains of Wanaka. The fact that a product which provides protection against air pollution comes from the home of pure is a great brand story. What is on the horizon for MEO? any new developments you can share? We have a MEO kids mask lined up for release this year, as well as other exciting consumer products utilising our core NZ wool filtration technology. In terms of markets, we are in the midst of exciting discussions with distributors from China, India and South East Asia. TRUE FOOD AND YOGA It had been life-long dream for yoga teacher and wellness practitioner Kelly Watt to bring together her experience in hospitality and wellness.

you are your authentic, true self, getting back to that child that you are.”

Last year that dream came to be when she opened wellness centre and restaurant True Food & Yoga with her former husband Nic in the gorgeous historic space on Orakei xx.

Kelly knows that part of the magic of True are the studios overlooking the Waitemata and city through the curved windows: a view that can’t be matched, anywhere. The industrial space has a fit-out of bleached oak, brass and plenty of greenery and now includes glamorous spa-like dressing rooms, a shop of the teachers’ favourite yoga and wellness accessories. Sky-lit rooms host holistic beauty treatments from Charlotte Harrison of the Beauty Bar, physio and massage with Gabrielle Sharpe and chiropractic practice from Dr Iain Wood.

Originally trained as a chef, Kelly has been a maitre’ d at fine hotels, Zuma and Matches in London, and spent eight years managing events at Nobu, London before returning to Huka Lodge, Whites in the Hilton and launching Masu at SkyCity with Nic. Trained in reflexology at London’s Harley Street and a yoga devotee since her teens, Kelly returned to her passion, completing training as a yoga teacher, as well as yoga medicine, barre, and Chinese medicine with Power Living in Australia, Garuda Barre and LA-based Tiffany Cruikshank. At True Yoga, she has assembled a school of some of Auckland’s best loved teachers in yoga, mat pilates and barre. “True was the lifelong dream of mine, my concept, we poured our own life into this concept,” says Kelly. “It is what we love to do with our own lives, based on our true story. SUPERFOOD MADNESS

Are superfoods all they're cracked up to be?

All plant-based wholefoods are superfoods. They all provide us with a wide array of nutrients. But, when it comes to what you should be eating in your diet, I like to keep things traditional. I encourage people to eat a simple wholefood diet – local and organic where possible. To me, there is nothing better. So, when something new comes ‘out of the wood-work’ claiming to be the ultimate health food – I get suspicious! It always pays to look at both the positives and the negatives of any emerging health-food trend so you can make a well-informed decision. Here are some of the superfoods that I believe have been over-rated in the media. CH I A SE E DS The chia seed is prized for the fibre, protein, oil, minerals, and antioxidants it possesses. To put it into perspective, when compared to quinoa seeds (which are essentially the same size), it packs more of a punch on most nutritional fronts. However, because of the nature of this particular seed, it cannot be consumed in any great quantity. Therefore, in my opinion, its nutritional value is of limited use. If you sprinkle a teaspoon of these seeds into your smoothie or over your salad it won’t add much in the way of protein (approx. one gram) or other nutrients. This hardly seems worth it considering they don’t add much in the way of flavour. To curb your appetite (if you are eating too much) or to regulate your bowel activity, I recommend people eat flaxseeds, slippery elm, psyllium, oat bran, seaweed, legumes, apples, cabbage, onion, nuts, sunflower or pumpkin seeds. G REEN SM O O TH I E S Having a green smoothie for breakfast seems like a wonderful idea. You simply throw your ‘5-plus A Day’ into a blender and drink your fruit and veggie quota before the day has even begun. However, on further inspection, this type of smoothie may not be as beneficial to your health as expected. This is especially true if you consume them frequently. When you drink your food instead of chewing it, you bypass a very important part of the digestive process! If you don’t chew your food — and chew it well — your digestive process is incomplete and therefore hinders the breakdown and absorption of your food. Your digestion is then further compromised as smoothies contain cold, raw produce which require a robust digestive system to be broken down. This can lead to digestive issues including burping, bloating, pain, flatulence, constipation and or/diarrhoea. Also, the regular use of raw vegetables like kale or spinach in a green smoothie can lead to iodine deficiency and thyroid conditions. This is because these types of vegetables (eaten raw) block the uptake of iodine. I recommend that people eat a good variety of produce — and wholefood not blended food. KO M B U C H A Kombucha is very popular amongst health trendsetters — and their followers. This beverage is a slightly sweet, subtly tart, fizzy, fermented tea. It is made using tea leaves (dried Camellia sinensis), table sugar, and water. A symbiotic colony Of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) is used to aid the fermentation process. If you google kombucha, you’re either going to get people raving about this effervescent beverage, or you’ll get people saying there is no evidence to substantiate any of its purported health claims. So, what do we know for sure about this beverage? It definitely contains: caffeine, sugar, water, fruit juice or ginger, alcohol, and carbon dioxide. No wonder people love it! I only recommend kombucha as a treat. If people want to experience the medicinal properties of tea leaves, then I encourage them to pour hot water on them! If people are looking to encourage good bacteria in their gut, then I firstly recommend people focus on consuming a varied plant-based diet. I then encourage them to eat fermented foods such as kimchi, miso, pickles, sauerkraut, sour cream, sourdough, tempeh, tofu, vinegar, and yoghurt. — Words: Lisa Fitzgibbon WWW.LISASAID.SO | OOMPH: 1 MAIDSTONE ST, GREY LYNN | OOMPHHEALTH.CO.NZ

PERFECTION VS PERCEPTION Today, some find it hard to differentiate between reality and what we see in the media. There are a lot of smoke and mirrors, with a sleight of hand anything is possible. Unfortunately, some compare themselves to that illusion. But what we see in the world of fashion and celebrity is just that: an illusion. It is something most will never measure up to and it can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration. It can lead to self-torment. It is unfortunate that many feel this way, more so for those young adolescents who idolise celebrity and strive to recreate themselves based on what they perceive. The lifestyle is often accurate,, it can be intriguing, but we are never party to the bigger picture. We will always fall short when comparing celebrity lives to our own, we live in different worlds, we work different jobs, our lives, too, will never be constantly scrutinised or publicly judged. It comes at a price. Why would we wish to sacrifice our privacy? It’s the same with looks. I have seen photoshoots first-hand and I have also seen the repercussions that

pressure can inflict on those within the fashion industry. It is not all glamour. It is very sad. We compare our looks based on magic. Professional celebrity shoots are airbrushed, tweaked and touched-up, yet we attempt to define ourselves against them. We are talking about men and women who may have been under the knife and then perfectly lit and edited to the core. No-one should ever look at themselves and believe they are not enough. There is beauty in everyone. I see scars as a representation of a life lived, fine lines as an expression of thought and feelings, grey hairs as internal glitter that protrudes through the surface to announce, “I survived!” The many truly unique characteristics that make us human and stand out are must be celebrated. We strive to be our best, and we should, but we should never do it for anyone other than ourselves. We should embrace what we have and work with, not against it. We did not come off a production line, we have flaws and that makes us special. It makes us memorable, and it defines ‘perfect beauty’. — Words: Donna Malneek

INGREDIENTS 2 medium-sized beetroots 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic, lightly crushed sprig of thyme 3 handfuls of fancy lettuce 3 handfuls of butterhead lettuce 2 handfuls of sunflower sprouts handful of baby beetroot leaves (optional) 2 baby chioggia beetroots 2 baby yellow beetroots

TO SERVE aged balsamic vinegar or balsamic reduction ½ cup macadamia ricotta ¼ cup quick pickled onion ¹⁄³ cup candied hazelnuts ¹⁄³ cup cooked sorghum

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 200°C. 2. Wash, peel and dice beetroot. Place in the centre of a large piece of baking paper along with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, garlic and thyme. Bring the edges of the foil together and twist to create a little parcel; place this on a baking tray in the oven and roast for 40–45 minutes. 3. When ready, the beetroot should be nice and tender. Take out of the oven and allow to cool down slightly. 4. Wash fancy and butterhead lettuce and dry well, then tear into rough pieces and place in a large serving bowl along with the sunflower sprouts, beet leaves (if using) and roasted beetroot. Finely slice baby beets using a mandoline, and add to the bowl. 5. To serve, top with a drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar or reduction, spoonfuls of macadamia ricotta, pickled onion, candied.

OCT

This recipe has lots of components, so you’ll need to be a bit organised. Have the sprouts, ricotta and hazelnuts ready in your fridge and pantry; the onion can easily be pickled while the beetroot is roasting. You can replace the candied hazelnuts with plain activated dried ones, or very lightly roast some in the oven (10–15 minutes at 170–180°C).

//

This is such a pretty salad – I also love all the different flavour notes and textures from the roasted beets, pickled onions, buttery lettuce and crispy hazelnuts. If you want to make a totally raw version, just replace the roasted beets with more raw beets and pickled onions.

MATAKANA OYSTER AND WINE FESTIVAL

After a slightly lacklustre start to the season it looks like spring is finally here. And as things start to heat up this month, it’s important to get on top of things to ensure your taste buds are graced with an abundance of delicious veggies harvested fresh from your garden.

Matakana is set to celebrate its first-ever oyster and wine festival on Sunday 8 October at the Woolshed, Matakana Country Park. Junction Magazine has teamed up with Mahurangi Oyster Farmers Limited and several local farmers to showcase these delectable little shellfish treats. Plump creamy oysters will go hand in hand withlocal wine at the inaugural Matakana Oyster & Wine Festival, and tickets are selling fast.

NO FUSS VEGGIE GARDEN

So, to make things easy here are a few tips for getting started.

KEEP CALM & SHUCK ON

PREPARATION

“If oysters are not your thing, there’ll be plenty of tasty cuisine to choose from and a wonderful festival atmosphere. Soulful tunes will belt out live from The Rubics, there will be shucking competitions, cooking and wine demos and plenty of things to keep the kids amused,” says festival organiser and Junction managing director, Bianca Howlett.

Start by weeding your garden beds thoroughly and then fork to help aerate.

Oysters from the area are renowned for their uniquely fresh, sweet flavours, and are less salty compared to other growing areas. Typically, local oysters have three stages: April to September when they are meaty, plump and crisp: October to December for fat and creamy flavours; and January to March is more about the recovery stage. More than 30 fantastic stallholders are ready to party, but there’s still time to join the fun. If you’d like to exhibit your local wine, beer or food, share your expression of interest by emailing the festival organisers. October marks the beginning of the visitor influx to the area so is a great chance to share your offering. Tickets to this all-weather event are limited and selling fast. More than 6,000 people have already logged their interest in the event via Facebook. For added convenience, festival goers can book a return trip back to Auckland via the special event Mahu Express service, 10am–4pm, Sunday 8 October (during the school holidays).

A stitch in time and all that is definitely relevant to veggie gardening. Before planting do your best to improve your soil. Growing healthy soil, rich in organic matter and full of beneficial microbes makes it much easier to grow healthy plants, reduces the risk from pests and diseases, and helps reduce watering needs.

Mix in compost and sheep pellets.

PLANTING

How you plant can also reduce the amount of work you do later on. Getting planting distances correct really helps. If you leave too much space you’ll find that weeds will soon crop up, but if you don’t leave enough your plants will compete for nutrients and have an increased risk of getting fungal diseases. If you aren’t sure check, most seed packets or seedlings will have the correct spacing information on them.

CARE

Feed plants regularly. To improve the soil and feed the plant use organic liquid feeds such as Aquaticus Organic Garden Booster. Most veggies will be fine with a monthly feed, however heavy feeders such as courgettes, tomatoes and eggplants will benefit from a feed every two weeks.

WHAT TO PLANT NOW?

Some of our favourite veggies and herbs to plant now includes: Herbs — Basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage, tarragon, rocket, parsley and coriander (best in part shade).

PLUME BLOOMS Crunching your way up along the tree-fringed driveway that winds up to Plume, a winery restaurant just outside Matakana boasting valley views with verdant ridges looming on the horizon, and vine-stitched meadows all around, you’d barely guess that the bright lights and colourful sails of Auckland sparkle less than an hour away. This holistic gastronomical experience goes way beyond an exquisite menu paired with a well-curated selection of local and international wines — including from Plume’s own boutique vineyard, Runner Duck—thanks to the site’s sustainable philosophy that sees seasonal, local produce served from an energy efficient villa built largely from recycled materials and partly powered by solar (there’s also a strict composting system, though I suspect little food is left on these plates). A wonderfully-named glass of Joy, a sparkling Runner Duck rose crafted from cabernet franc grapes, is offered as an aperitif, while I opt for the Japanese pancake — okonomiyaki — to start, served with sizeable, succulent prawns and crispy Asian salad. It’s a huge entrée — enough to share — but my partner, Heather, has already ordered the vegetable terrine, an airy affair that arrives with a grape reduction created from the Runner Duck syrah, and a dip crafted from quince grown on site. I’m a sucker for duck, Peking duck especially, though I’ve never sampled the dish in a non-Chinese restaurant — and Plume’s crispy duck leg sure doesn’t disappoint. The delicate pancakes are stacked next to juicy dark meat with crispy skin that all falls away from the bone with ease (affable restaurant manager Farida informs that it used to be served pre-shredded but numerous guests said they enjoyed the carving experience). Heather opts for the wild mushroom risotto with wilted spinach, truffle poached egg and a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese, washed down with a chilled, creamy Runner Duck chardonnay. Other menu highlights include the aged beef eye fillet with duck fat potatoes, and spiced pork belly with stir fried soba noodles. There’s also a fish of the day option (such as monkfish and kingfish), as well as a handful of coconut-based curries (authenticity proudly ensured under the watchful eye of Mumbai-born Farida). You’ll need to set aside a couple of hours for the five-course wine-tasting menu. Bellies pleasantly bulging, Heather and I finish off by sharing the dark chocolate tarte with candied orange and mascarpone, but within the first bite I immediately wished we’d ordered our own (especially as dessert is the only time her appetite overtakes mine). With the weather finally turning for the better, be sure to set aside a sunny afternoon or evening feasting on wonderful food in the presence of some of the region’s most pleasant vistas. Maybe time it with a visit to Matakana’s lovely Saturday market. You’ll be well-looked after by Farida and her attentive team. — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

THE COLOURS OF INDIA

OCT 2017

I have never travelled anywhere else with such an intensity of colour as is found in India. Our fondness for cool black is a dreary contrast to India’s brightly coloured turbans, stunning saris and temple flowers. Rajasthan, a land of vast deserts, camel trains, ancient forts and temples, is the ‘jewel in the crown’. The spices piled high in the market and the decorated elephants at the Amber Fort all make this part of India a photographer’s dream. The Taj Mahal in Agra, some 200km from Delhi, deserves the effort to arise early and experience it at sunrise when visitors are fewer and the light creates a dreamy hue. Intricately inlaid precious stones cover the walls, the monuments, the tombs. No photo or movie does this shrine justice. You must see it through your own eyes — and so romantic! The Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in honour of his beloved wife, Mumtaz. He was imprisoned after being overthrown by his son and thus could never complete a black marble facsimile of the Taj across the river that was going to become his own tomb. One of the great, tragic love stories of history! India has endured thousands of years of conflict and generated incredible wealth, leaving a legacy of impressive fortresses and beautiful palaces. Some Maharajahs’ palaces are now the most gorgeous hotels where us mere commoners can stay in the opulence that was the exclusive realm of Indian royalty. The most picturesque of these is the Lake Palace Hotel in Udaipur where the James Bond film Octopussy was shot. Others still feature the gorgeous glass inlaid walls, colourful wall paintings, and cool shady courtyards of the era – my favourite is the Samode Palace just out

"No photo or movie does this shrine justice − you must see it through your own eyes." of Jaipur. At least 475-years-old, each suite has its own unique personality, with marble baths, fourposter beds and stunning views over the mountains to delight even the most jaded traveller. Religion is an ever-present facet of life in India, with a diversity of faiths adding layers of intrigue to an already fascinating culture. Delhi’s Qutab Minartower, the Jain Temple of Ranakpur, and the 17th-century Jagdish Temple (Hindu) of Udaipur are just a few examples of India’s rich spiritual life. Travel around India has become so much easier over the years, with excellent domestic airlines, high quality hotels and vastly improved tourist services. It’s now also very popular to add on some time in Sri Lanka, or end on a more relaxing note in the Maldives. The sensory overload India exudes from every pore can delight, confound and overwhelm the first-time visitor in their first couple of days on arrival. But if you take an open mind and go with the flow, you can’t help but fall in love with the colourful experience that is India. — Words: Chris Lyons, Director, World Journeys

FLY FISHING RETREATS FOR MEN WITH CANCER

Reel Recovery was founded in the USA in 2003 by a group of avid fly-fishers, inspired by their fishing buddy’s ongoing battle with brain cancer. Having witnessed first-hand the beneficial impact flyfishing provided their friend they created Reel Recovery to provide the same opportunity for other men battling the disease. Reel Recovery is now established in New Zealand. Reel Recovery is a national not-for-profit organisation that conducts free fly fishing retreats for men recovering from all forms of cancer. Men suffering from cancer do not have the same range of support programmes available as women and are generally unskilled at tapping into the support that is available. And men being men are often reluctant to ask. Retreats are offered at no cost to the participants and are led by expert fly-fishing instructors. A maximum of 10 men are invited to participate, to ensure the quality of the instruction and to create a powerful small-group dynamic. This enables a unique environment conducive to relaxed, open interactions.

Though only three days in duration, a Reel Recovery retreat can be a life-changing event for men battling cancer. The program blends outdoor activity with one-onone fly fishing instruction, a practical guide to reading a river, rod and reel setup, knots and basic fly tying. The organisation provides men with all forms of cancer a unique opportunity to share their stories, learn a new skill, form lasting friendships and gain renewed hope as they confront the challenges of cancer. One participant in our March retreat said, "Well, an entire lifetime with cancer, and 20-plus years playing around with fly fishing, but never have I had three days where the two were combined as the primary reason for an event. Couldn't have asked for anything more. A memory that I’m sure all of us who went along will keep for a lifetime and then some. Cancer! It sucks”.

River. The Puniu holds many rainbow trout and the local landowners have made access easy for retreat participants. Each participant will be fully kitted out. This includes waders, boots, fishing vest, rod, reel, lines and flys. The only cost to participants will be their own travel to and from the Castle Rock accommodation. As Jeff Entringer eloquently wrote in his poem, “That Moment in Time,”: "In our brief existence that is called life. It is not what happened yesterday that is important, and we must remember that tomorrow may never come. Today is the only day in which we can make a difference." If you would like to support Reel Recovery with a donation please contact Craig Caldwell below.

The next Reel Recovery retreat in New Zealand will be held between the 9-1, March 2018.

Visit the Verve website to see more images from this retreat.

The venue is Castle Rock, approximately 20km south of Te Awamutu. This ideal location is very near to the Puniu

HAPUKU LODGE + TREE HOUSES Nestled between the grand Kaikoura Mountain Ranges and the Pacific Ocean sits an eye-catching accommodation option like no other. Imagine spending an evening nesting amongst the trees in your very own luxury treehouse. We were excited to hear such a place exists and recently spent a fantastic spring weekend away at Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses. Hapuku Lodge is located in the pretty tourist town of Kaikoura. It's best known for it's wildlife experiences, mouthwatering crayfish and picturesque scenery. Hapuku Lodge & Treehouses are arguably positioned in one of the best spots in New Zealand. The Tree Houses grew out of the thought that “if one could but be a bird one could more fully appreciate the beauty that is Kaikoura”. Perching high over the manuka and kanuka canopies, the Tree Houses truly allow you to feel closer to the mountains, the ocean, and the birds. Positioned away from the main lodge there are five separate Tree Houses. Made from a number of different timbers including New Zealand redwood and manuka, the main features certainly complement the natural environment. Unlike our childhood tree houses the Hapuku Tree Houses do not spare the luxury element as every detail has been well thought out to ensure maximum comfort for all guests. The interior design is that of textures and earthy tones. The rooms are fully equipped with everything you can expect from a five-star hotel yet what really makes this a unique experience is the exceptional location, views and the instant feeling of relaxation and peacefulness. Over the years the site has expanded to what is today, encompassing over 500 acres of deer farm. Along with its vast deer farm that supplies the restaurant with venison there is an

olive grove that produces approximately 600 litres of oil each year. We cannot mention the impressive accommodation without talking about the wonderful culinary experience presented by executive chef Fiona Read. It is evident that exceptional food and wine is part of the Hapuku experience. All produce is sourced locally including the lodge’s own vegetable and herb garden, venison from the deer farm and fresh Kaikoura seafood. During our visit we of course had to experience some of what Kaikoura has to offer. Still rallying around from its destructive November 2016 earthquake, the town is making a strong comeback. Whale watching is at the top of Kaikoura's attraction list and we were lucky enough to experience this by plane with Wings Over Whales. The Oahu point Seal Colony was a highlight, viewing the seals up close in their natural surroundings was special. Our stay from the get-go was outstanding, the team at Hapuku genuinely offer guests the whole package. A relaxed down to earth experience without failing to offer impeccable service. They showcase the wonders of what New Zealand and Kaikoura have to offer not only in regards to the environment, but also New Zealand’s fresh produce and seafood. We say Hapuka Lodge & Tree Houses is a must-stay and without a doubt one of New Zealand's hidden gems. We recommend you check them out. — Words: Jo Walton & Hannah Walton Photography: Stephen Duffin

ART & ABOUT

STAGE, CRAFT & COMBAT

//

Alexander is chatting via video from Melbourne where he’s touring with the Pop-Up Globe in his role as stunt coordinator and fight director — a gig he secured following an audition for an acting part for the company while in Auckland. The Birmingham-born performer and director has previously trod the boards in his home town, as well as London’s West End, in productions such as Shawshank Redemption, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Now, based in Auckland, he runs the New Zealand Stage Combat School. “Hardly anyone was doing this kind of thing when I first arrived four years ago,” Alexander says, “so, when I offered my services I was snapped up by the big institutions like the Auckland Theatre Company, the Auckland Performing Arts Centre, and the Actors’ Program. Plus, being the only person in New Zealand with a degree in stage combat was a huge benefit.” Alexander was inspired to take the career path when former pupil Scott Adkins, who played Boyka in Undisputed 2 and had roles in the second Expendables and The Bourne Ultimatum, came back to talk at his college: “I did some research and discovered East 15 drama school. They only accept 15 applicants a year out of hundreds, but luckily I got in, graduated pretty high, and have been working ever since.” The drama school is the only one of its kind in the world, with students leaving with a combined degree in both acting and stage combat. “It’s very intensive training over three years,” Alexander says. “It includes things like horse riding, archery, parkour, and weapons training. You learn how to fight and act.” At the Pop-Up Globe, Alexander has applied such skills to choreograph hangings, the firing of flaming arrows and pyrotechnics. “We can also use sugar glass to smash ‘bottles’ over people, it all depends on what each individual production wants,” he says. “It’s a lot of fun.”

How do you come up with the choreography? “The director will usually tell me what they want from the scene and a little bit about the characters. I’ll see how the scene is without a fight, then go from there. It must always be character-driven, otherwise it doesn’t make sense — you can’t give swords to, say, two nerdy characters that otherwise wouldn’t fight.” Are there ever real accidental strikes? “Accidents are highly unlikely because of the sheer number of safety precautions, and even if something did happen, the injury would never be anything more than a very minor scrape.” Classes at the New Zealand Stage Combat School attract actors “looking to upskill”, and writers and directors “wanting to see what’s possible regarding stunts”, along with “builders and bouncers and people from all walks of life”. But Alexander says women make up most of his student base, seeking to “get fit and have fun while kicking some guy’s ass!” “Whether it be the Amazonian women, Boudicca, or Cleopatra, history is littered with stories of strong, warrior women,” says the director. “Hollywood has cottoned on to that and begun to shine a light on them, which has been very empowering and encouraged women to become more interested in the industry.” Alexander has previously had a handful of movie roles (“straight-to-DVD films such as Top Dog and Green Street 3”), and it is path he would certainly like to pursue further. “Features are definitely where I want to head next,” he says. “As much as I love the theatre, there’s greater spectacle in film. Comedies interest me the most. There’s great scope for comedy fights — I defy anyone not to have the whole audience laughing at the sight of an unlikable character getting a good kick in the balls.” He’s trained plenty of ladies to do just that.

BROCKHAMPTON

SATURATION II Brockhampton may not be your typical American boyband, but you will address them as such. Led by 20-year-old Texanborn Kevin Abstract, Brockhampton is a product of 90s kids growing up in the age of the internet, where meeting likeminded individuals you wouldn't otherwise have the chance to are but a click away. Connecting via Kanye West fan forum kanyetothe.com, the boys bonded through a shared deeprooted love for Yeezy, but more importantly it was a star aligning discovery of mutual talent and musical chemistry way beyond the digital world. On Saturation II, its original's sequel, the selfproclaimed boyband represent a new generation for the cliche label; one that doesn't necessarily have to fit the typical criteria to be considered valid. Saturation II is an endless stash of pop-ridden, usually Kevin-sung hooks, equally distributed rap verses each playing their own role, a progressive narrative and teenage resonance that leaves no such trace of sugar coating. The only missing piece to Brockhampton's boyband complex is a panel of judges and manufacturing label, none of which they needed to become their own version of a popstar. Kevin's LGBT narrative is a common topic on the album, executed through a stream of conscious, candid journal-style rap in a plea to normalise rappers speaking on being gay and eliminate the shock factor surrounding sexuality in hip hop. On 'Jesus' Kevin raps about a failed relationship over a wistful piano beat, blaming his star sign for their incompatibility and comparing himself more to the likes of pop singer Troye Sivan than a dominant hip hop artist like Drake. 'Junky' takes a darker and more confronting turn. Kevin's fury is palpable when he raps "Why you always rap about bein'

gay?" Cause not enough n*ggas rap and be gay', his narrative is challenging and unforgiving, filling a massive representation void for hip hop. 'Junky' also beholds a moment of brilliance for Matt Champion, who's feisty closing verse is the boldest he's ever spat, and his verse is literally just him yelling at lame dudes to learn how to respect women. Champion's assertive "I hate these shady folk that want a lady like/but don't treat lady right", and "Where the respect? Is your ass human? Respect my mother, respect my sister, respect these women boy", is a real refresher to hear from a young rapper, who doesn't doesn't appease to the pressure of coming across vulgar in order to sound hard. Ameer Van is another stone cold standout voice, flexing high impact and intimidation upon command. Some of his best moments appear on air slicing recounts of facing injustice growing up a black kid in Texas on 'Teeth' and 'Fight'. With a string of 2000s top 40 R&B and the millenial rappers, each kid grew up around the same time absorbing (think Tyler, the Creator, Kanye) this genius formula that makes Brockhampton's sound so nostalgically familiar to a generation of 90s babies, but with a refreshing edge and contemporary perspective that mainstream hip hop has yet to cross over. Their current consistency is untouchable by anyone else of their game, and with strength in numbers, each of its 17 members are redefining what it means to be a boyband and challenging a perception of masculinity. Brockhampton are definitely Southside's answer to One Direction, and they might even just be the best boyband of all time. — Words: Laura McInnes PRINCESSLOZ.WORDPRESS.COM

SHADES OF HiSTORY

They say a splash of colour can work wonders for our state of mind, and the same can be said for history, too—just ask Brazilin artist Marina Amaral who has carved out a career digitally colouring black and white photographs such as World War Two images or portraits of esteemed figures like Albert Einstein and Martin Luther King Jnr. As you can see, the results are mesmerising, and, occasionally, kind of disconcerting— but in a very cool way. “I’ve always held a deep fascination with history,” says Mariana. “It’s funny, because my mother has a history degree, but I’m far more interested in it than she is. But she never tried to influence me, it was a natural process.” Mariana believes that with colour comes a greater connection. “We live in a colourful world, receiving much visual stimulation all of the time,” she says. “It is hard to relate to a historical figure when you see them in black and white because this gives us the sense that this person only existed in history books, which is absolutely not true. The colours allow us to build a bridge with the past, and that is what I try to offer through my work.” Do you feel a responsibility regarding the images? “In a way, I do. That's the reason why I choose my photos very carefully, or why I research so much before publishing a new image.” Marina collates collections from public archives, governmental organisations and public libraries then contacts historians for

help in identifying the most accurate hues, as well as referencing the locations against contemporary photographs and studying a range of skin tones. I ask if she’s ever had feedback from anyone connected to the people in the pictures.

to see her face in colour for the first time. I truly believe that once you see a photo in colour, you are able to connect in a more intimate way with the subject. And thankfully, I think I managed to achieve my goal.”

“Yes, this happens quite often,” she says. “I was once contacted by a woman whose grandfather owned the building where American soldiers waved a flag at the end of the second world war in one of the photos I restored without knowing the story of that building. She sent me a beautiful message, and it was very special. It's always very exciting when that happens.”

What makes the process even more fascinating for Marina are the small details that reveal themselves that were not visible while in black and white. “It’s interesting because I feel that I know better my subject once I finish restoring the picture,” says the artist. “All the people of our past, be they good or bad, were human beings like all of us. It is important to understand and know the mistakes of our past so that they are never repeated again in the present or in the future.”

Do you consider colourisation an artform? “I think so. You can master all the techniques, but if you do not have an artistic look, the photos will not look right. I need to make artistic choices all the time because it is impossible to figure out the original colours of every single object you see in an image. I'm always studying things that apparently have nothing to do with what I do, but that in fact makes all the difference, such as physics and traditional painting techniques and so on.” Which piece are you most proud of? “The portrait of Czeslawa Kwoka, the little girl that was murdered in Auschwitz at age 14. I wanted to give her a chance to tell her story and wanted to give people the opportunity

Next year, in conjunction with acclaimed historian and writer, Dan Jones, Marina will publish The Colour of Time, the first in a series of books to bring ‘the past to life in the present’. “Dan already had the concept in his mind, and he invited me to develop the project with him,” beams Marina. “We are covering the birth of the modern world from the 1850s-1950s, using 200 exclusive photos colourised by me and accompanied by Dan's exciting narrative. It's a huge book, full of intriguing and important information presented in a way that anyone can understand. I'm really proud of the project and I can't wait to see what people will think.” — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

JOANNA MARGARET PAUL

NOT NOSTALGIA Not Nostalgia, an exhibition of twenty works by Joanna Margaret Paul, is showing at Bowerbank Ninow, 312 Karangahape Road, from September 27 to November 28.

— people in unguarded moments, at rest, thinking, captured in the private moments of stillness that punctuate the busy flow of day-to-day life.

The work of Joanna Margaret Paul occupies a unique position in the canon of New Zealand art. The daughter of artistic and literate Hamilton publishers Janet and Blackwood Paul, she was exposed to art and literature from an early age. Paul’s upbringing, as well as her art education under Colin McCahon, Greer Twiss and Tom Hutchins at Elam in the late 1960s gave her a grounding in the modernist canon that was to inform her work throughout her life. Bonnard, Morandi, Matisse and de Kooning were artists whose works she found strongly influential, but her work also contains elements that, as Jill Trevelyan notes, are characteristic of a postmodern approach, such as “her unease with conventional framing devices, the centrality of language in her work, her interdisciplinary approach to artmaking and [her] commitment to feminism and environmentalism."

Paul’s technique is similarly focused on mark-making that is tangential and evocative. Her pencil indicates edges, corners, interstices and boundaries, often imparting form and volume to the white space of the paper. Paul’s work is fundamentally observational; it is about the way we see, and how much of the visual field we perceive is taken up with noise, emptiness and uncertainty. As Paul’s work points out, the visual world is rarely neatly framed and compartmentalised — her 'snapshot' approach to drawing and painting reflects the reality of human visual perception, and is as notable for what it leaves out as what it includes. These works encourage a type of looking that is contemplative rather than analytical, and emphasises surface, tone and atmosphere.

Paul’s practice encompassed a range of media. She returned time and again to painting and drawing as the backbone of her creative life, but also produced notable experimental film works and wrote poetry, both of which deal with similar themes to her graphic works. Paul’s drawings and watercolours are almost startling in their 'ordinary-ness'. Her choice of subject matter reflects an interest in the everyday, the ephemeral and the overlooked: a view out of a moving vehicle, pieces of a child’s game, a snapshot view of suburban rooftops, and people

Paul received a Frances Hodgkins Fellowship in 1983, and the exhibition A Chronology, a survey of her work, was shown at Whanganui’s Sarjeant Gallery in 1989. Paul was also awarded the Rita Angus residency in 1993. However, despite these achievements, her work remains largely unknown to the broader public; she is very much an 'artist's artist', known for the dedication and rigour with which she pursued her art practice. Paul’s personality was perhaps incompatible with the type of self-promotion often required in order for artists to further their careers, but the quality of her work speaks for itself. — Bowerbank Ninow, 312 Karangahape Rd, Auckland

'NEW PAINTINGS' PARNELL GALLERY | 17-31 OCTOBER PREVIEW: TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER, 5:30PM Stephen Howard returns to Parnell Gallery with an exciting new body of work in October. The inspiration for these striking pieces is often found during regular travels throughout New Zealand. Following a move to Nelson in recent years, a focus on the stunning West Coast of the South Island can be seen in this show. Many will relate to the artist’s expression of the beauty and visual contrasts which may be glimpsed while passing through our landscapes. Bold, highly defined, yet well considered and pared back in colour and form, the aim is to achieve an essential impression of his subject matter. Thus, Howard’s approach may be seen as a 'contemporary form of impressionism'. A serene moment is captured in the work 'Lake Ianthe', where the far-end of a wooden jetty reaches out to perfectly still, reflective waters. In other pieces, such as 'Morning Light on Custom House' and 'Morning Light (Moutere)’, faded and forgotten buildings from our unique heritage are recalled in elegant contrast to vibrant remnants of native bush. Howard continues an ongoing visual inquiry into stands of native trees, left in landscapes otherwise cleared for farming. The kaleidoscopic variations of vibrant colour, light and movement found within this subject matter, can be seen in works such as 'Morning Light (Tree Island Series)'.

The abstract editing of extraneous details and manipulation of what remains, serve to reveal what is moving and essential about each scene of interest. The subject is often seen in a very still, clear light, which lends it a heightened regard. The accomplished layering of paint creates an organic yet crystalline atmosphere, beautifully preserving the particular memory or moment in time.

BOX OFFICE NO ORDINARY SHEILA

MAUDIE

19 OCTOBER

19 OCTOBER

No Ordinary Sheila tells the inspirational life story of Sheila Natusch. Sheila was a nonagenarian natural historian, illustrator and writer. This beautiful, truly Antipodean journey, made with love by her cousin and long-time Kiwi filmmaker, Hugh Macdonald (This is New Zealand) features beautiful historic footage of the lower south in the 30s and 40s. This film offers fascinating glimpses into life as one of few female students at Otago University, and covers Sheila’s friendship with Janet Frame and their subsequent and unsuccessful foray into teaching. Viewers will love this radiant, defiant and unconventional life story which ranges from the southern wilds to the rugged Wellington coastline, where Sheila still lived until very recently, without car, TV, lipstick or alcohol, planning to “get the last bit of fun out of life that there is".

Based on a true story, Maudie is a beautiful and absorbing portrait of reclusive Canadian folk artist, Maud Lewis, following her life, the success story of her art and her life with husband, Everett Lewis in a small village in Nova Scotia. Maudie features incredible, award worthy performances by Oscar nominated Sally Hawkins and Oscar nominated Ethan Hawke who bring Maud and Everett to life in this intimate and endearing film.

HOME AGAIN 19 OCTOBER Reese Witherspoon stars in Home Again, a romantic comedy about a single mum whose new life in Los Angeles takes an unexpected turn when she takes in three unlikely houseguests, struggles to re-invent her career, and finds herself entangled in a new relationship. From the producer of The Holiday, The Intern and It’s Complicated, Home Again is a funny, uplifting story of love, friendship, the families we create, and one very big life lesson: Starting over is not for beginners.

DETROIT 2 NOVEMBER In the summer of 1967, racial discrimination in Detroit reached breaking point and the city erupted into one of the largest citizen uprisings in US history. From Academy-Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker), Detroit zeroes in on one pivotal event during the civil unrest – the Algiers Motel Incident – a motel raid which spiralled out of control as police interrogated guests, ending in tragedy. A brilliant ensemble cast including John Boyega (Star Wars) and Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, Captain America) portray the real-life people before, during and after this defining moment in their lives. This gripping, intimate film is essential viewing – an urgent, masterful recreation of history with heartbreaking parallels to the present.

ART & ABOUT

THE BEST WATERCOLOUR

//

Winning the trophy was on the back of more than 15,000 hours of drawing, painting, practice, and experiments. I’ve been a full-time artist for more than 12 years. I mostly paint with watercolour. I was drawn to it early on. I love the way the pigment runs in the water—sometimes it’s hard to make sense of its random movement and flow, but that’s what keeps you addicted! Occasionally I work with acrylic inks which behave in the same way, and these inks are exciting as they can be painted on wood.

once you can work with it instead of having to battle with it, it’s the most relaxing and pleasurable way to spend time. Being a professional artist requires much self-motivation. It’s not just the time spent in the pursuit of creating original art, but the time for self-promotion. I expect all artists struggle with this. I frequently write articles for magazines and have my images published on greeting cards and other products. I’m always looking for shops to sell my original paintings and prints and I enter art shows around the country. Winning the top award this year was the best motivation I could have dreamed of, and now I’ve set my sights higher! I invite you to view all my art work at my website: carolynjudge.com

I had a career in IT before taking up painting, but I found it a bit stifling. Learning watercolour was difficult and it took years, but

I was out of town on my Harley Davidson Road King when I got the call to say I had won the Raye Hannam Trophy for the Best Watercolour in the 2017 Royal Easter Show. This is New Zealand’s biggest art show and this is the greatest accolade a watercolour artist can receive. It was quite a buzz to get the news. In the art world, it’s a bit like winning an Oscar!

BOOK SHELF HOW HARD CAN IT BE? ALLISON PEARSON $35

Allison Pearson's first novel was I don't Know How She does It, which went on to sell around the world and was made into a very popular movie by none other than Oprah Winfrey. This new book hot on the bookshelves is bound to do the same. It is the story of wife and mother Kate who is the sticking plaster in her fragile family. Her husband has taken early redundancy and is "finding himself", her teenage daughter is posting inappropriate images on Facebook and discovering that going viral is not neccessarily a good thing and her aged parents on both sides need more attention than Kate has time for. A significant birthday is looming for Kate but it is her need for a new job and how she juggles all the balls that are her family that is the star of this book. Take it on holiday put your feet up and enjoy and pass on to friends.

THE GREAT DIXTER COOKBOOK AARON BERTELSEN $60

Aaron Bertelsen recently visited Arcadia bookshop and we had a splendid afternoon tea hearing him talk about his work at Great Dixter. He grows the vegetables in the wonderful gardens created by the late Christopher Lloyd. The book tells you what varieties of fruit and vegetables are grown in the garden plus there is a lovely collection of recipes using the produce to its best advantage and the third part of the book is a diary of gardening showing what and when to do all the things that you need to to get the best from your garden a la Great Dixter. This is the sort of cookbook you would buy even if you have never planted a carrot or some kale but if you are a gardener it is a pure delight.

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE CELESTE NG $35

Set in a very reserved housing complex the Richardson family are long time residents and they also own a rental property on the far side of Shaker Heights which they have just leased to a young mum and her teenage daughter. Little Fires Everywhere begins with a disaster and a missing daughter and then you are pulled into a story that upsets the tranquil sedateness that the neighbours of Shaker Heights know and love and mingles two very different families' lives at a cost to Elena Richardson who thought she could control everything. Good for solo reading but perfect for provocative bookclub discussion too.

IMANI WINDS TOURS NEW ZEALAND

OCT 2017

Grammy-nominated wind quintet Imani Winds makes its New Zealand debut with a national tour as the final concert in Chamber Music New Zealand’s Kaleidoscopes 2017 Season. Imani (‘faith’ in Swahili) Winds began in 1997 when flutist Valerie Coleman, decided to create an ensemble bringing together some of the top African-American woodwind players around. Oboeist Toyin Spellman-Diaz said the relevance of classical music is under-represented in people’s thoughts today and “especially newly-made contemporary classical music. For Imani Winds it doesn’t matter whether the music was written by composers who lived 50 years ago or composers who wrote their music 50 days ago; all music has a purpose. Music without words can be even more universally meaningful than music with lyrics because the meaning is up for interpretation. Imani Winds will perform two programmes on the tour, both including a new Chamber Music New Zealand commission by New Zealand composer Natalie Hunt, Snapshots along with what bassoonist Monica Ellis describes as Imani Winds’ “greatest hits”. “We are fortunate enough to have two composers in the ensemble and their original and arranged works have been in our repertoire for many years,” she said. The programme for the Hamilton, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin concerts also includes Imani Winds’ arrangement of famed orchestral classic, Scheherazade, which Ellis said “works wonderfully for wind quintet. And we'll perform pieces by our friend and musical icon, Paquito D'Rivera – bringing a bit of Cuban, Latin jazz to New Zealand". Both programmes in New Zealand feature arrangements by Imani Winds’ French horn player Jeff Scott. Scott has worked on major musical productions including The Lion King on Broadway for eight years, and played jazz with Wynton Marsalis. He said he sees a place for jazz and other American popular music on the classical concert stage. “It’s the challenge for the 21st century musician to train for the flexibility and sensibility in these genres alongside the traditional Western classical canon. While jazz and popular styles do not make it into every composition or arrangement I write, the colours remain as options amongst the spectrum of choices at any point of the process.”

THE SCIENCE OF DETOXIFICATION Most of us have heard of L. Ron Hubbard, but how much do we know about his areas of expertise? Well known as the founder of Scientology, it is perhaps less known that he is behind 200 million words – writings and audio lectures - in the world today. Indeed, one of his books, Clear Body Clear Mind, sets out a Purification program that has come into its own in, what would appear to be, the 21st Century Wellness Revolution.

doesn’t mean the mother must be silent, rather it means the environment around should be as calm and as quiet as possible. It’s quite sensible and practical.”

Dr Helen Smith, a holistic doctor who specialises in nutrition and women’s health explains Scientology and the Purification program. “I’ve followed Scientology for 30 years. I liked it because it had great tools for study when I trained as a GP,” she says. “I still belong to the College of GPs but I tend to focus more on nutritional medicine and women’s health. I take blood tests and decipher what a person may be lacking. For example, many 40+ women experience hormone imbalance which could be helped by natural approaches.”

The Purification program described in Clear Body Clear Mind is about clearing the mind and spirit by flushing out toxins in the body. “Initially Ron Hubbard developed it for people who had taken lots of drugs like LSD, but it also helps rid the body of the residues of chemicals, toxins, pesticides and radiation through sunburn which can lodge in the cells and fatty tissue of the body.” says Dr Smith. “Drugs in particular can deplete Niacin and the other B vitamins along with minerals.” The book covers the treatment involving running to get the circulation moving, followed by a dry sauna at a lower temperature. This creates a sweat to flush out the cells, which is followed by a replenishing process using good oils, cellular salts and vitamins. “It’s a bit like a car oil change,” says Dr Smith. “On average, it takes 23 days to complete. The programme must be supervised and a medical check is required beforehand. Not everyone can take part.”

She goes on to say: “Scientology is really an applied philosophy and followers can easily be of other faiths. I grew up Anglican. It’s very non-prescriptive. The sensationalism is skewed. Take the incidence of the media report on the idea of a ‘silent birth’ - it

“The program has had huge success,” she says. “In Vietnam the effects of Agent Orange are still manifesting and an independent facility in Germany verified that the Purification program eradicates it. The Vietnamese Government is funding

the building of 60 centres to provide the Purification program. Helen says, “It’s a fact we live in a chemical oriented society. Chemicals can lodge in your body for years, dull your senses, reduce your ability to think clearly and worse, prevent any advancement in mental and spiritual well-being.” TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD HAVE EXPERIENCED GREAT RESULTS FROM THE PURIFICATION PROGRAM INCLUDING:

• Ability to think clearly. • Better perception, focus, vitality and gain more energy. • Heightened efficiency in making decisions and taking action. • A more positive attitude toward life and happiness. • Dramatically improved general wellness and a heightened sense of spiritual well-being. MINI REVOLUTION A fun and funky SUV that boasts some seriously eco-friendly credentials without losing any of its smile-inducing zip, the Mini Countryman All4 Plug-In Hybrid is the first of its kind from the legendary bug-eyed brand. The Countryman continues Mini’s pioneering, boundary-pushing thirst, while greatly reducing its thirst for petrol—a highly versatile SUV that merges an electric powertrain and traditional combustion engine. Alone, the Countryman’s powerful electric motor generates a 40-kilometre range, plenty for a commute or weekend jaunt around the shops, but combined with its twin turbo, threecylinder engine and 36-litre tank, expect to cover in the region of 500 kilometres. The switch between electric and petrol is smooth and seamless, with three modes to choose from: auto eDrive, MAX eDrive, or Save Battery, controlled via a retro toggle. The first setting, the default auto eDrive, does all the thinking for you—smart onboard systems examine your speed, acceleration and battery life to figure out the most efficient way to maximise the combined power of the electric motor and petrol engine. MAX eDrive is the most efficient mode—ideal for short trips around town—whereby not a drop of fuel will be drunk (the vehicle can actually reach an impressive speed of 125km/hr on battery only, not that you’ll be doing that on urban routes). But if you do fancy a little adrenalin boost, or, say, need to pass someone on the highway, simply floor the accelerator and the petrol engine will automatically kick in. The Save Battery mode is designed for when electric power is low and the petrol engine needs to take over. The electric motor will be partly replenished through power generated by the engine as well as the brakes. When parked up, charging couldn’t be easier, simply plug it into a 10A socket with the supplied cable—a full charge takes just 2.5-3.5 hours. The battery is neatly slotted beneath the rear row of seats preventing it from impeding on valuable storage space—and there’s plenty of that too. Mini by name, but not by nature, enjoy extended leg room front and back, as well as a 220-litre capacity with the rear seats down—that’s more than the previous model, and it’s 20cm longer, and 3.5cm wider, too. A cool, bright yellow stop-start switch joins all the usual array of retro toggles and oversized dials, while the intelligent four-wheel drive detects the make-up of the surface to direct the necessary power to each individual wheel for maximum to tear things up off-road with maximum efficiency and agility also.

THE NEW MINI COUNTRYMAN PLUG-IN HYBRID. Combining an electric motor and battery with a conventional petrol engine, the new MINI Countryman is now available as a plug-in hybrid, bringing together the best of both worlds. With more-than generous space, the largest MINI yet delivers comfort and versatility in a whole new dimension. And with ALL4 all-wheel drive you can take on every terrain, turning any little journey into a big adventure. Find out more at MINI.co.nz and book a test drive at your nearest dealer.

BAKER & BLOOM/ PAWS IN PARNELL

CELEBRATING OUR DEMOCRACY

I’m writing this column a couple of days after the election, before we know the outcome of coalition negotiations. What we do know is that National received 46% of the Party Vote on election night, compared with 45% in 2008 when John Key first brought us to government, and 47% in 2011 and 2014. We take that as a signal that support remains strong for a government that has taken the country in the right direction, and a vote for continued progress. Time will tell how the negotiations unfold. Reflecting on the campaign, all campaigns are nerve-wracking under the MMP system, where the margin between success and failure is fine. The difference between having the opportunity as a cabinet minister to improve the lives of fellow New Zealanders, current and future, and the frustrations of being an opposition MP is colossal. That’s why we fight so hard. We had a total of seven ‘meet the candidates’ debates in the Epsom electorate during the campaign. They were robust and reasonably good natured affairs. The most enjoyable was at Brothers Beer in Mt Eden, partly because the candidates each had a nice glass of craft pale ale to help the debate along. We also gathered in the old Blind Institute building in Parnell, the lovingly restored old Methodist church in the heart of Mt Eden village, St Kent’s school hall at the bottom of Victoria Ave, and Somerville Presbyterian. At each, half the crowd comprises the supporters of various candidates, peppering opposition candidates with tricky questions and their own with friendly ones. The rest seem genuinely interested to gain deeper insight into the thinking that drives the candidates, beyond the soundbites of media coverage. Outside the formal debates, some of the toughest sessions I had were before year 13 students at various secondary schools. They didn’t hold back. They’ve given me plenty to think about. The Epsom electorate had four sitting MPs standing for re-election: David Seymour for ACT, myself, David Parker for Labour and Barry Coates for the Greens. Barry missed

out on re-election because of the much-reduced Green Party vote. It has been commented upon a couple of times that the entire line up of seven candidates in Epsom were male. This is a pity, but thankfully unusual. Of the neighbouring electorates, Maungakiekie, Mt Albert, Mt Roskill and Auckland Central — most of the candidates of the Friday afternoons have never been sweeter in Par leading parties are female. Landlords, ensure you do regular inspections of your property and get these cleaning jobs done to keep your tenants happy and your property looking smart. Get out the water-blaster, do some painting, remove mould and gardening tools.

//

Anything that can be categorised as safety, security or hygiene should be prioritised. Some issues are not always landlords’ responsibility, such as blocked waste-masters, the broken oven because the controls have been moved, or the washing machine that drains into a tub but the tenant has left the plug in so water has poured over the top of the tub onto the floor.

BUSINESS / EDUCATION & SOCIETY

Spring weather – rain, wind, hail and icy winds. The blossoms have been blown off the trees and the leaves are appearing. The ground is sodden, there’s mud everywhere and the gardens look awful. The exterior needs cleaning, as do the slippery paths and cobbles. This is just outside—there is more to do inside.

H O RO S CO P E S 110

SAGITTARIUS CANCER

22 November - 21 December

It’s time to be more conservative with your money, and feel more accomplished in so doing. You would learn to love yourself and take pride in yourself. Looking outside of yourself for ‘ego strokes’ (whether through romance or other such ‘applause’) may prove to be fruitless. You might encounter opposition or resistance to your personal plans and goals, which forces you to re-evaluate your current projects or commitments.

CAPRICORN 22 December – 19 January

You may find new and exciting channels for self-expression. You want to know what you can do, in terms of raw potential, in real terms. Your mind is on your purpose or ‘mission’ in life, and your desire for success is stronger than ever. Your potential is called up for inspection. You are called to express your worth and calibre in measurable, concrete ways.

AQUARIUS 20 January – 18 February

You have a more mature grasp of your own capabilities, you project a more responsible, perhaps serious, and selfassured personality to others. You are especially open to receiving grounded, practical advice, and benefit from humbly learning from others. You are likely to discover your true needs from partnerships, as well as what you can realistically give to a partner. You may take special joy in sharing a common cause or ideals with others.

21 June - 22 July

Furthering your personal ambitions and interests comes more easily during this cycle. At times, you may feel like the sky is the limit. Ideals and spiritual goals that you may have taken for granted or worked with for many years might suddenly seem superficial or not particularly useful anymore. This is a cycle in which you need to define, understand, and crystallise your significant relationships with others.

SCORPIO

LEO

23 October – 21 November

23 July – 22 August

If you work hard at selfimprovement, you will be one step closer to knowing where you are headed, and you will have re-built faith in yourself and your beliefs. A shaky feeling that causes you to sputter and avoid risks will be replaced with a more mature attitude towards adventure and facing the unknown. You are worth something, and you deserve compensation for what you do.

Make sure that you are engaging in due diligence regarding your body and health through this period, as it will be all too easy to forget those needs and slide into physical difficulties.

TAURUS PISCES 19 February – 20 March

This month brings a fair measure of reality and objectivity, so that whatever relationships you have will be defined and re-defined. Relationships are seen now as serious things. Responsibilities to partners, the need to compromise, and the realities of the needs of others, become clear. Your spiritual world, compassion, private life, and tolerance expand and grow. Matters from the past are magnified in your life now.

ARIES 21 March – 19 April

You are mentally adventurous, ready and willing to learn, into “mind expansion”, and less attached to your values. You are forced to begin seeing others as separate individuals, and to improve the manner in which you relate to, and with, others.

20 April - 20 May

You might find that inner and personal experiences are more important to you than more worldly ones during this cycle. You might recycle a fond old memory into a new chapter in your career, no matter how far you've come since. How you entertain yourself, how you have fun, and issues surrounding how you manage your ego are now coming up for ‘inspection’.

You may be laying groundwork and building a long-term project that eventually has much significance in your life. The amount of satisfaction you are deriving from your relationship, the quality of the relationship itself, and how you view your partner are all things that you are examining now. Disillusionment is a possibility, as you are beginning to see your relationship without rose-coloured glasses now.

VIRGO 23 August – 22 September

You need to make a few changes in your life, and you now have the courage and drive to do so. Just be careful that you recognise the areas of your life that are dear to your heart. New learning experiences as well as ‘life’ experiences (travel, adventures, contacts with others of a vastly different culture than yours, and so forth) are likely to emerge.

LIBRA 22 September – 23 October

You will learn through the course of this period to depend on yourself and to take pride in yourself for what you really are, not only how others see you. Romantic relationships might be tested during this time. You might feel overwhelming pressure coming from your casual love affairs, or the flaws in an existing romance seem to be screaming out at you.

GEMINI 21 May – 20 June

You might consider fine-tuning your talents and skills with higher education or experience during this cycle. You might have the opportunity to reach a broader audience and share your ideas and projects with more people. You would likely make significant changes to your relationships, leave behind a romance, or strengthen your stance on how you will derive pleasure from your life.

First, consider what work provides. Sure it provides income, but it provides many other things. It provides a reason to get up in the morning, a structure for the day, stimulation for the brain, satisfaction and fulfilment, social interaction, identity, status and a sense that you are contributing to something bigger than you.

It seems these factors are more difficult for men to leave behind when they leave work than it is for women. It has been said that men tend to do two things. They work and they play. And when they stop work, play for seven days a week stops being play. Women on the other hand seem to have a broader range of activities. They fit work around those activities and when they retire simply do more of those activities now that work takes less time.

BUSINESS / EDUCATION & SOCIETY

Almost everyone thinks planning for this time revolves around having enough money and ensuring it will last. This article is the first in a series that digs deeper. Indeed, having sufficient financial resources is important but it is not nearly enough if you want your retirement to provide you with broad happiness and security.

If you have an email account with the following ISP’s or email providers then it needs to be changed by the end of November: clear.net.nz | es.co.nz | ihug.co.nz | paradise.net.nz | wave.co.nz | pcconnect.co.nz quik.co.nz | vodafone.co.nz | vodafone.net.nz You should have received an email outlining the change and the steps you need to follow. You need to set up a new email account or if you already have one, then make the changes to redirect your Clear Paradise or Vodafone email to the new email address. Vodafone suggests changing to a Microsoft Outlook.com account or Gmail account. Some of our customers have been having issues and difficulties with this and we facilitated the change for them. If you need help to set this up please ring and we can make an appointment. We will help you to do the following: • Set up a new email if you don’t already have one, we are recommending Gmail. • Set up automatic forwarding to your new email • Transfer all your existing contacts to your new email • Download all your existing emails to your computer or transfer them to your new email • Email all your contacts to let them know you’ve switched your email service • Update your email address with your relevant service providers Some people are setting up their new email address but not completing all the steps and may lose their old mail and contact list. We can provide a software clean-up and general maintenance service at the same time. At Rudy’s PC Services we can help you set up the best solution for your needs. Call us about anything regarding your computer and we will be glad to advise you and fulfil your requirements. We are all about making long-term relationships with our customers. We give ongoing advice and support. Often for free!

HEARD PARK MINI-MARKET SERIES

BAKER & BLOOM/ PAWS IN PARNELL

Friday afternoons have never been sweeter in Parnell! With plenty of sweet treats and beautiful blooms, Baker & Bloom is coming to Heard Park as a part of the ‘mini-market series’ in October 2017 to help you ease into your weekends just right. A gathering of the area’s finest bakers, pastry chefs and dessert specialists will be found at Heard Park together with blooms of all sorts on the third Friday afternoon of every month, starting 20 October. You can brighten up your home with fresh blooms for the weekend, and also get your Saturday morning breakfast treats organised the night before, on your way home from work. Baker & Bloom markets are here to make your transition from a working week, into your weekend as sweet as possible in every way! Third Friday of every month, starting 20 October. 1.30pm – 5.30pm, Heard Park, Parnell.

PAWS IN PARNELL

Paws in Parnell is Auckland’s first market designed especially for your pooch! On the first Sunday of every month starting in October 2017 there will be no better Sunday morning ‘walk route’ for you and your precious pup than straight up (or down) to Heard Park. Parnell has one of the highest dog-to-person ratios in our city and so what better location is there than Parnell itself to set up a boutique mini-market and support beautiful New Zealand made, doggy-centric products and businesses? Grab a coffee and spoil your fur baby with all the doggy treats the market will have to offer your pooch. First Sunday of each month, beginning October. Heard Park, Parnell 9am-12pm.
