Editors’ Note A-MEN! Verve August has been dedicated to the men in our lives… our partners, sons, brothers, fathers, friends, work mates, and all those with whom we unwittingly rub shoulders in our day-to-day existence. With Father’s Day just around the corner, it felt right to recognise the important contribution our guys make to our lives and to society in general. Verve writer, Jamie Desplaces, has done his usual stirling job in creating a selection of unmissable articles such as his interview with Kevin Roberts, global chairman of Saatchi and Saatchi, and the story of David Benge who helms the New Zealand office of Vice. Both articles celebrate inspiring, exciting, positive male role models. Beards make an undeniably masculine statement, and have, over recent years, spawned an industry of products, services and organisations — including Ygnacio Cervio’s Fellowship of the Beard. Read more on Ygnacio and this year’s national beard competiton on page 12. We had a whole heap of fun creating the ‘Trading Places’ fashion shoot. Our five hunky models obligingly took time out of their busy schedules to good-naturedly submit themselves to the rigours of Imeleta’s make up brushes and the constraints of shirt and tie for our fabulous fashion spread on pages 26—33. Each have businesses in the construction trade, and conversation with them underlined that heavy demand has put the construction industry under considerable strain. With skills in short supply, more apprentices are desperately needed. As well as the construction trade, we also take a look at the auto trade, sail makers, piano tuners, and more. We did a quick sweep of the Verve office to find out what the ladies most loved about their nearest and dearest men folk. No guesses why a few of the things said had to be censored! Here are the others: Jude: “The men in my life are kind, understanding, loving and considerate. My partner Gerard couldn’t be any more considerate. He makes my dinner most nights and I come in to a home that is warm and welcoming! The other two adult men in my life are my boys Dane & Jesse — they are the best a mother could ask for! I simply love and adore them all!.” Fran: “When I spend time with my men I wind up thinking about and discussing very different things than when I am with my women friends. They broaden my horizons, and that’s awesome!” Harriet: “Growing up in a family of four girls, we have always depended on our dad for bringing a healthy masculine dose of fun, humour and love, not to mention having someone there to open the tightest jar lids! The men I know constantly amaze me with their energy, strength, intelligence and intuition, and they all bring something different and wonderful to my life.” Yay men!

A MOST HIRSUTE PURSUIT “I’ve always had beards,” says Ygnacio Cervio, “I guess it’s a rebellious thing. I encourage other men to grow one at least once in their lives to see how it looks. For me, it’s a way of life.”
Ygnacio’s beard’s current length is the result of four years' growth. In 2013, he finished fifth in the natural beard with moustache category of the World Beard Championship, a journey that was filmed for short BBC documentary, Beard Chronicles, now on YouTube. Though born in Argentina, Ygnacio is a proud adopted Kiwi and represents New Zealand on the world stage. The following year, he assembled a team of New Zealand bearded blokes for the event, and is campaigning for the beard world cup to be held in Aotearoa in 2021. Inspired by his experience on the world stage, Ygnacio, an independent film maker, founded the Fellowship of the Beard, through which he organises annual national beard competitions in NZ: “After Germany, I realised that no one was really doing it here, so I thought, ‘why not do something about it?'"
The first one, held at the King’s Arms, attracted nearly 40 competitors and more than 300 guests. “I had no idea what would happen,” says Ygnacio, 38. “I would have been happy if just five guys turned up. There were live bands too, it was such a success.” Last year’s was even better, with 71 competitors joined by girls with fake face fur, attended by 550 guests. This year’s event, on 29 October, promises to be grander still, with world cup competitors flying in from Australia and the US. Money raised from the competitions is donated to a range of of kid, cancer, and mental health charities. Past judges have included Movember champions, the city’s best barbers, and the creative director from vintage magazine, Glory Days. “It’s not just the length of a beard that is important,” says Ygnacio. “It’s the overall look — how well it is cared for, how tidy it is, how charismatic the guy behind it is. There is a very thin line between looking like a hobo and looking like a professional beard grower!” Maybe it’s a guy thing, but I almost want to applaud Ygnacio’s magnificent mane. Though, when we meet, he laments that he’s having “a bad beard day”. Growing aside, it takes real dedication to care for such a vast forest of facial hair. He washes it daily, avoiding shampoo, and opting only for natural soaps, oils and masks, occasionally having to also trim split ends. Eating certain foods in public such as soup and ice cream is a no-no. With every sip of coffee, he uses his spare hand to part his moustache. Needless to say, it’s a lifestyle which draws a certain amount of attention. “There are at least a couple of comments every day,” he says, “though 98% of them are definitely complimentary. But people often want to touch it, and that can be a bit annoying, especially for my girlfriend!” Presumably, I ask, she’s a fan of the facial hair. “Oh yes, I’ve always had a beard since she’s known me,” says Ygnacio, before adding rather wryly, “though it wasn’t quite this long when we met.” Words and photo: Jamie Christian Desplaces

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT LEADERSHIP, KEVIN
15 MEN’S FEATURE Aug 2016
“The idea that leaders are born, not made, is a load of rubbish,” says Kevin Roberts. “Leadership can be be learnt, people can grow into it. I don’t think Richie McCaw was a natural leader, and I’m sure Steve Hansen wasn’t. Leadership takes different forms. You can be a charismatic, or a quiet, leader. It’s an alchemy of science and art.”
Roberts, of course, knows a thing or two about what it takes to get to the top. Appointed CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi in 1997, earlier this year he was made chairman of the legendary global advertising agency. His resume is as diverse as it is lengthy, including presidential stints at Pepsi Cola in Canada and the Middle East, directorships of Lion Nathan, New Zealand Rugby Football Union and New Zealand Telecom. He was chairman of the USA Rugby Board for nearly a decade and has been bestowed the New Yorker for New York Award by non-profit organisation Citizens for NYC. Roberts also holds honorary professorships at universities around the world, and has been recognised with a handful of honorary doctorates, too. In 2013, he was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit and last year became chairman of My Food Bag (Roberts was born in Britain and holds Kiwi citizenship). A bestselling author to boot, his latest tome is 64 Shots: Leadership in a Crazy World. I caught up with the big boss via phone from the Big Apple. “My book couldn’t have come at a more opportune moment,” says the Saatchi chief. “Brexit has just taken everyone by surprise and British politicians are falling, while here in the US we’re in the throes of two leadership races: the one that matters being who will be the next UN Secretary General, maybe Helen Clark; then there’s something else going on to do with presidents which is of secondary importance to us Kiwis!” Though Roberts didn’t always agree with Clark’s political direction, he admits she’s “someone who gets things done”, and lauds her as the “standout” candidate for the United Nations’ top job. As for the seismic shift in Europe, Roberts puts that down to arrogance and complacency on the part of British leaders and says that new prime minister, Theresa May, has been propelled into a win-win situation. “The hard call has already been made, so ‘it’s not her fault’, if you like,” says Roberts. “She has the chance, if she’s paying attention, to recapture the heartland of Britain and the Conservative party — the middle class — in the same way that Thatcher did. David Cameron and Boris Johnson, all those old Etonians, they don’t speak for the middle-class, and they feel disenfranchised. The middle-class is treated pretty well by John Key, but they have
been ignored by the British and American politicians and now you’re seeing this nationalism and populism expressing itself, sometimes nastily in racist ways.” Trump has ridden that wave of populism more successfully than anyone imagined. How do you rate his chances come the presidential election? “In any two-horse race it’s 50-50. He has done a couple of things right. He has that dream of ‘Making America Great Again’, something the people feel they can share and participate in. I’m an ad guy, I know what a headline is, and people respond to headlines. The second thing that Trump is doing is appealing to the deep psychological fear of loss which we all have. We fear loss three times more than we relish wins. Trump is saying jobs are being lost, women are being lost, America is being lost. Looking at it all logically, why would women vote Trump? Why would Hispanics? But just look at what’s happened with Brexit, the people who voted for it are the people who will suffer most from it happening. Come the October conventions, Hillary had better have some language and some stories that people can share and participate in, otherwise it will be far closer than anyone — except President Putin — wants.” There are many women either in, or vying for, some of the world’s most powerful positions at present. “I think it’s fantastic that we’re living in a world where women can now compete. It’s a world of technology, of collaboration. Women are naturally geared to collaborate, geared to connect. It also helps that there are now role models, going back to the likes of Helen Clark, Theresa Gattung and Jenny Shipley. Technology has really helped to liberate women. All of the startups that you are seeing in the US, many are by women who are at home with the family and working hard on the computer to set things up. Many of the inequalities have been rebalanced through technology. When you look at millennials coming through, they want to stay connected, they want to collaborate, to do good, and women have been talking about that kind of thing for a long time.”

>>
What would you say to those who argue that it’s ever harder for men to find their role in the modern world?
done. He wants to be president and he’s just working backwards from that, ad-libbing and making a lot of stuff up as he goes.”
“I find it really easy, I love it! It’s crazy, and men can do crazy because we’re all just boys. We now have permission to misbehave. I think all this talk of men finding it difficult to know their place is a load of bullshit. The modern world is a great place, it’s social and it’s connected and the rules are all being broken. Men don’t really want to join organisations, they don’t want to be part of a corporate machine. Really, most of us are mavericks and vagabonds at heart. Most of us want to be part of the Wild Bunch. It’s a great time to be a man.”
Roberts believes the old leadership models of “command and control” are long dead, and that the most important role of a boss now is to inspire others to reach their full potential. “The next thing is to not just get things done but to make things happen. Thirdly, leaders create other leaders. The book is trying to say in this crazy world, which is VUCA — volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous — you can’t simply manage your way to glory.”
Roberts talks of role models who’ve mentored him throughout life. Teenage boys especially, he says, need strong guidance (Roberts was booted out of school after becoming a dad at 17, then took on four jobs to support his new family). “Women, I think, are only just discovering the importance of mentors. Theresa [Gattung] has done a lot of mentoring at My Food Bag for example, and that didn’t happen 20 years ago.” One of the finest pieces of advice he was offered was to “fail fast, learn fast, fix fast”. “Don’t be afraid of failure,” Roberts adds. “But that’s not the point. It is how fast you learn to fix that defines you. Part of the education system in New Zealand stops you from failing, so you don’t learn how to fix. Failure for the sake of failure is useless, but failure for the rapid learning of fixing is fabulous. Another mentor told me to start with the answer and work back. I think that’s something Mr Trump has
You describe the book as being “not corporate”. Has ‘corporate’ become a dirty word? “I hate it! I don’t like the corporate world. I’ve always been a maverick and a rebel. It’s like Steve Jobs said, why join the navy when you can be a pirate? At my home in the UK I have the skull and cross bones flying, it’s true. Leadership is about how you can lead your family, lead your community, lead your mates. It’s about language. The language of my book is not corporate, it’s the language of my voice because I dictated it. There is no corporate crap in there, so whether you’re in the boy scouts, or the leader of your school, or you just want to get back control of your life, you can read a few of the shots in the book and it might help.” 64 SHOTS: LEADERSHIP IN A CRAZY WORLD IS OUT NOW.

TONING UP YOUR EMOTIONS
“Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there were two friends named IQ and EQ...” No, this isn’t a magical story, but if you believed some of the more extravagant claims made for emotional intellignce, also known as EQ, then you would be excused for believing there to be a fairy tale ending “at the bottom of the EQ rainbow”. So what, exactly, is emotional intelligence? It is commonly described in a two parts: firstly, as the ability to identify and accurately ‘read’ our own and others’ feelings and emotions; and secondly by being able use these insights to constructively engage in sometimes difficult, sometimes sensitive, or sometimes conflict-ridden conversations that lead to constructive learning outcomes (and hence personal learning) for all parties involved. Some of you at this point may be thinking that you’d like to go looking for that pot of gold at the bottom of the EQ rainbow. If so, remember the old adage of ‘be careful what you wish for because you may just find it’. Done properly, developing and enhancing our emotional intelligence means embarking on a personal learning journey about self. In the course of this journey, we will learn things about ourselves. Some things we will like. Some things we will not like. Some things may well unsettle us. And so they need to, because this is what provides the passion and the courage to change. But we humans don’t always readily take up the challenge of change — not openly, willingly or courageously. This helps explain the best evidence we have that human beings change what they choose to change. It’s not changing that’s difficult. It’s making the deliberate, conscious intentional choice to change that is difficult. Extremely difficult! And I speak from personal experience in my own life, just as all of you reading this article can testify to in your lives. So in future editions of Verve I invite you to embark on a journey of personal discovery and change, if you are up for it! And if you choose to engage, it has the potential to change your life. But beware, it is not a ‘pot of gold’ that you will discover. It is much more valuable. It is a treasure trove of self-discovery and personal learning. But don’t be fooled into thinking it is easy, because it is not. It is hard work. I would like to share with you my favourite quote about change, it is from Eric Hoffer: “In times of change learners will inherit the
17 MEN’S FEATURE Aug 2016
earth and the learned are beautifully equipped for a world that no longer exists”. Our workplaces are filed with very clever, very competent, very able people, but some of them have stopped learning. Sometimes it happens to us. And when we stop learning you and I find ourselves at the top of a very slippery slope. All of us (and I include myself) have been in this place at different times in our lives. So I invite you to make a deliberate, conscious, intentional choice to take up the challenge. And as for that little voice in your head saying: “What will tomorrow bring if I make the choice to take up this challenge?” The answer is simple. The choices you make or don’t make today (starting right now, as you are reading this article) will decide. It’s worth remembering that the quality of our journey through life is determined by the cumulative sum total of all the choices we make. And the quality of the choices we make is so often a function of the questions we ask ourselves (or the ones we don’t). Sometimes we are not simply asking ourselves enough courageous questions. So for those of you who are interested, your homework for the next month is to keep a ‘feelings diary’. Once a day note down: (a) the range of feelings and emotions you are experiencing; (b) their triggers (i.e. where were you and what were you doing at the time?); and (c) what ‘self talk’ did you catch yourself engaging in at the time? Grab an exercise book and get writing. See you next month!

AUCKLAND’S HISTORIC NORTHERN CLUB
“It’s nice there being a certain element of intrigue about the Northern Club,” says the general manager, Nicki de Villiers, as we sit on creaking leather armchairs beside a most welcome open fire. Outside, it’s a clear, but crisp, morning. Oak panels adorn the walls, engraved with names of the club’s presidents past and present, alongside members of the recently incorporated Officers’ Club. Beneath us splays a large animal skin. “While we pride ourselves on having that intrigue, we don’t want it to be a barrier to those wanting to become a member. We see ourselves as a luxury brand, and would rather be considered an exclusive, rather than elitist, establishment.” Exclusive, this storied club most certainly is. Potential members must be vouched for by five serving ones, then there’s a threemonth vetting period. Thanks to the privacy and discretion that membership affords, it has been graced by the “majority of preeminent Aucklanders”, including lords, dames, leading judiciary figures, politicians, sporting icons, and the historical architects of the city. Acceptance certainly arrives with some serious perks. “It would be untrue to say we don’t have networking,” says Nicki. The ban on mobile phones was recently lifted. They may now be
carried, ‘on silent’, with members allowed only to check texts or emails. Phone calls are strictly forbidden unless in a private room. “It is a social club, and it’s not meant for business. But I have also witnessed so many good friendships blossom over the years between people who otherwise wouldn’t have met.” There are activities for all ages (the average age of membership is currently in the late 50s, which Nicki is working hard to lower) and special interest groups, with club functions held twice a week. “We also have many guest speakers — people who it may be difficult to book for a private event, will come to talk to a group.” There are 120 similar clubs scattered around the globe in cities such as London, Paris and New York, and though there is no official umbrella organisation, they do all adhere to the principle of reciprocity for their members. Guests of members may also use the lodgings, even if their hosts don’t stay. The imposing stone corner structure of Princes Street has been bestowed a Category 1 listing by Heritage New Zealand. Built in 1867 as a hotel, it was established as a gentleman’s club in 1896, and served, for a time, as an officers’ mess hall. Just shy of
a century later, the club opened its doors to women when Dame Catherine Tizard became New Zealand’s first female governorgeneral. “Traditionally, the governor-general is bestowed honorary membership for the length of their term, so that forced us to take note,” says Nicki. “It was put to a vote and an overwhelming majority favoured accepting women members.” More and more would-be members in their 30s and 40s are now seeking to join. “There’s a real thirst to be part of something which has tradition,” says Nicki. “To experience the things that your grandfather had, and to have that sense of belonging. “Members also certainly feel a real sense ownership — they are the owners, after all — and with that comes a real sense of pride. The staff, too, feel it. I’ve been at the club for 20 years, 17 as general manager, and a great number of staff have been here for many years. Our members love that, that familiarity. It’s good to dispel some myths, because this club is not inaccessible. It’s a warm and friendly place.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Prostate Cancer: Eight Facts You Need to Know Simply put, we always feel women go through tough things during the health life cycle. We endure smears, breast checks, and childbirth. But, what about our beloved counter parts, our men? Well, sure they don’t go through childbirth, and there is little that makes them susceptible to awkward experiences at the doctors, but there is one special organ that carries great responsibility: the prostate gland. The prostate gland is the size of a walnut, designed for the production of semen, the fluid medium that serves as transportion and nutrition for sperm. Our men pay a visit to the family doctor every year from the age of 50 to check if this amazing organ is working well without any troubles. The guidelines on how to assess the prostate gland have changed recently and while most GPs are happy with a blood test level (PSA — prostate specific antigen), some would rather do a rectal examination too. Words: Dr. Maria Reeves

If you are in your 50s and have decided to opt out from having visiting your GP, maybe what follows will make you think again: 1. In New Zealand, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. 2. We have 3,000 registrations each year, and 600 deaths from prostate cancer alone. 3. Men who develop prostate cancer are mostly over the age of 65 (it is rare under 55). 4. One in 13 men will develop prostate cancer before the age of 75. 5. A family history of prostate cancer puts you at higher risk. 6. Testosterone is linked with prostrate cancer. 7. Difficulty in passing urine is the most common early symptom. 8. It is silent at first, but once spread, bone pain is likely. Remember, you are the only one who can change your life, your health and your future. You have the power to act. If you ever experience any symptoms such as difficulty in passing urine, bone pain, or tiredness, then see your GP immediately.

A GOOD VICE
Vice, one of the hippest names in world media, now operates 36 offices across the globe. Among its most recent additions is its Auckland hub, helmed by David Benge. Verve caught up with him over a coffee on K-road and talked shop, God, and fatherhood.
achieve more by working with others. No idea is stupid. I do think my generation is the first to talk more with their kids more on the same level. We’re well passed that whole idea of ‘a child should be seen and not heard’.”
“It’s a really exciting time,” David says. “Vice is growing exponentially worldwide, and from my end, it’s great to be making Kiwi content. It’s a unique space in New Zealand, no one else seems to be specifically targeting the 18 to 34-year-olds. That age group is actually very thirsty for knowledge but no one is speaking to them in a language they can understand. People also worry that there isn’t enough content in New Zealand, but there are millions of stories. The great thing about Vice is that it brings people out of the woodwork, and we’re always open to new things.”
What are your hopes and dreams for your daughter?
Before Vice, David, who hails from “just outside Wellington”, spent the best part of 20 years managing and promoting bands and tours, an endeavour which took him first to Melbourne, then New York. An unlikely rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, I suggest, for someone who read religion and classical studies at Victoria University. “I grew up within a deeply Christian family,” says the 38-year-old. “My mum and dad produced New Zealand’s only Christian magazine, it was called Reality, ironically! People warned me that I shouldn’t do a religious degree because they said those that do, often lose their faith. I thought that was the best reason to do it then, to have new information and make informed decisions. Later, I was excited about getting out of New Zealand, but I wouldn’t say it’s been a particularly rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.” And did you question your faith? “Studying world religions led me to reject fundamentalism and narrow thought. To this day, if you asked if god exists I wouldn’t be able to say 100% ‘no’. I do believe Jesus’ teachings to be great guidelines for living your life, even if I don’t adhere to all of them.” Science and technology, he says, are further and forever distancing the notion of a higher being. “Maybe god is just another word for the concept of love.” I ask what lessons he took from his parents. “To listen. To take others’ opinions and to understand that you are not the only person in the world. You
“I hope she has the confidence to explore the things she’s curious about. And that she remains curious. I want her to scratch those itches. I don’t want her to ever feel that there are roadblocks. I want her to know that I’m proud of her, to not ever think that she has let me down. I want her to have the ability to make educated decisions.”
“My mum and dad produced New Zealand’s only Christian magazine, it was called Reality.”
David’s daughter, Hunter, was born in New York. She’s the first girl to bless the family — David is the oldest of three brothers, his father, too, was one of three. “We were on the 12th floor of the hospital and Hunter arrived at around 8am, just as New York was waking up. The yellow taxis were all lined up on the streets outside, the city was coming alive, and this little creature was born, this tiny human being. I held out my hand and she pushed her hand up and squeezed my finger super tight.” David and Hunter’s mother, Tanya, have since separated, so their daughter’s time is split equally between Auckland and Tauranga. With five-year-old Hunter being partMaori, David is happy that she is being raised close to her roots, but is determined that New York remains a big part of her life. That she has options. “If one day she tells me she wants to lead a simple life growing vegetables in the countryside, so long as a she’s explored other avenues as well, then I’ll be happy,” he says. “She can go grow the best vegetables she can.”

Q&A with GORAN from WEATHER TIGHT
How long have you been in the building trade, and how did you get into it? It’s been nearly six years. I got into after being offered a unique opportunity in a new and exciting trade, that being the shrink wrap industry. What’s the job title for those who shrink wrap buildings? Shrink wrap specialist installers. What do you love most about the work? It’s not your regular nine-to-five! I have the opportunity to travel to various sites around the country, some with exceptional views, and every jobsite requires a unique solution. The job keeps me fit as it requires me to be constantly on the go and utilising all parts of the body. I love not being stuck behind a desk — an extrovert’s dream! I’m out and about, meeting various individuals, which goes in hand with building solid working relationships within the industry. Is there something more rewarding about working with your hands? Most definitely. I’ve always done it. Starting something from scratch then seeing the end product delivered to specification, and a happy customer, is very rewarding indeed. How do you go about wrapping a building? A typical day begins about 6.30am, checking the weather conditions. If weather permits, we head to the site to take measurements. Next, we prep the site, that involves covering sharp ends of scaffolding with small pieces of plastic, otherwise the wrap may tear. Once the site is prepped, we begin to pull the shrink wrap plastic to the highest point of the scaffold. If wind conditions permit, we then open the sheets up which will fully encapsulate
the site. Several cuts to the plastic are made to get it welded with a heat gun to the lowest point of the scaffold, holding the plastic firm on the scaffold structure. The final stage is shrinking the entire surface plastic, using a heat gun, which keeps the plastic tight to the scaffold structure, delivering an encapsulated Weather Tight Solution. What about the work would most people be surprised to hear? You’d be amazed how many people out there that are afraid of heights! Also, how solid a structure can be, once plastic is heated. The visual from the interior and exterior of a fully shrunk site often leaves people in a state of “wow”. Where would we find you when not at work? Fishing on a nice calm day! Hanging out with my partner, or having a social gathering with my friends. If you weren’t a doing this job, you’d be... An entrepreneur. What’s the best advice you received from your father? My father wasn’t around too much when I was a kid, but my grandfather was. He was a tough, hard working man from Croatia and I’d like to think he taught me three things that have played a massive role in my life: firstly, to always respect your peers, and treat a lady with respect; secondly to work hard and save money for your future; and thirdly, if you go fishing don’t come home until you have caught something to put on the family table. How will you be celebrating Father’s Day? Catching up on some well deserved sleep! Then heading to dad’s for a lunch with the winning lotto ticket I buy him every Father’s Day.

SCALES & SAILS In honour of the good men of Auckland, and with Father’s Day just around the corner, Verve chatted with a couple of the city’s finest craftsmen about their work, their hobbies, and their dads.
Richard Lowe, Piano Tuner and Technician at Lowe Tuning “When I tune, I start on middle C with a tune fork and it’s all done by ear. I am listening to subtle, high pitched beats and harmonic waves that can be very accurately measured. I also do all aspects of piano repair and adjustment of touch, known as ‘regulation’.” Auckland is home to just a dozen or so piano tuners. Richard has been plying his trade for nearly 40 years. “I’d heard that Atwater’s music shop was looking for an apprentice, so I applied,” he says. “That was in 1980.” Now Richard is a member of the prestigious Australasian Registered Piano Tuner group, and the Piano Tuners and Technicians Guild, organisations which only accept possessors of world-class skills. Richard allows around two hours to work on a piano, an “intense” process for which he requires “absolute focus”, with decisions made every second. “Even after one tuning, you can be quite drained,” he says. Each piano contains more than 200 pins. “But it is very satisfying to overhaul a quality old piano and bring it back to life. Also, I love meeting my customers.” Richard also plays the guitar and loves to exercise, so jokes that in another life he may have been a fit rock star (“though I certainly have no aspirations to be one now!”), and says the most important lessons learnt from his father, an accountant, were to work hard and be committed. This Father’s Day Richard will take his wife and daughters and a “tasty treat” to visit his dad.
Stu Molloy, Production Manager at Doyle Sails New Zealand Every morning at 7.30, Stu Molloy walks the loft floor of Doyle Sails to check in with each department — each tasked to make specific sails — before taking a seat at his PC to reply to emails and set schedules for upcoming jobs. “Following that I am back out on the floor working alongside the different teams ensuring that their production levels are as high as they can be and that all sewing machines are operating at all times. I am always looking ahead to the next jobs to ensure that our production stays on schedule to meet our customers’ needs.” Most people, he says, would be shocked at the cost of the very biggest sails, often running into hundreds of thousands of dollars — not to mention the many hours involved in crafting each one. There is, Stu continues, something inherently more rewarding about working with you hands. “I very much enjoy making things, and would much rather be doing a practical job than sat in an office all day.” Indeed, he adds that if he weren’t making sails, building would most likely be his trade. Handy-work runs in the blood, for Stu’s dad ran his own panel beating business. As for the most rewarding part of sail making, it’s all about “getting out on the water and seeing the finished sail in action on the boat, particularly for the race yachts”. Stu has now been making sails for 16 years: “I got into it through sailing with my local yacht club where Chris McMaster, one of the owners of Doyle Sails, used to sail his yacht. Back then, Chris had his own company which eventually merged with another one to become Doyle Sails NZ.” Even when not at work, Stu says we’d most likely find him out on the ocean, either on his paddle board or sailing locally or at regattas overseas. And as for how he’ll be celebrating this Father’s Day? “Probably enjoying lunch out with my wife and two little girls.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Home Security Makeover Stay Up-To-Date Whilst You Renovate
When renovating or changing things around the house, there is no better time to consider a security upgrade. A personalised alarm system installed by experienced professionals can add value to your home, protect your assets, and, most importantly, provide you with the added depth of safety and security you deserve.
receiver to an existing alarm panel might be all that’s needed to revolutionise the control you have when away from home. This technology can now give you the ability to check and change the status of your alarm, or even individual appliance, from anywhere with a cellphone signal or Wi-Fi.
Before kicking off your home alterations, it’s worthwhile getting some expert advice. If you have an existing alarm system then consulting with professionals is a necessity as alarm systems are designed to detect and report anything that tampers with them – even when they’re not armed. Home renovation work can potentially cause unwanted issues with your alarm that may compromise its long-term function. No one enjoys listening to falsely activated sirens — especially not the neighbours!
However, even with all these new home gadgets in place nothing beats the assurance of having professional response just minutes away in the event of an intruder, fire, or safety emergency.
Reviewing your home security’s efficiency can also be worked in with planning for smart home automation features. A more sophisticated IP-based solution not only allows users increased autonomy, it makes it easier to add new functionality such as lighting, door access, or window and perimeter controls in the future. The ability to customise your home alarm system to fit with your changing lifestyle is more simple and affordable than ever. The addition of a communication module and wireless
It can be a hectic time whilst you’re in the midst of a home renovation, especially if you’ve moved out for a few weeks or months. During times of vulnerability, a security patrol officer can be arranged to regularly check the site to prevent burglars identifying your home as being unoccupied and an easy target. No grumpy grease monkey or girlie calendar hiding here. This is a premier workshop, a one stop shop offering car repairs, comprehensive servicing, and set prices with a “no surprises” guarantee. Women in particular love the Auto Super Shoppes’ formula, with many bringing their family members’ cars for servicing or repair. There are 29 workshops are based in Auckland alone. “Everyone we talk to is surprised to hear how many there are,” Kellie says. “We’ve certainly got Auckland covered. Our most southern centre is in Invercargill, and the furthest one north is Whangarei.” Fleet servicing lease vehicles is another specialty. Due to the group’s national footprint, competitive terms, and central billing, it’s a service no other repairer in New Zealand can provide. Kellie says: “New health and safety regulations mean a car is a workplace now — especially if you have work representatives out on the road. If employers don’t take reasonable steps to make it a safe workplace, they’re liable.” She makes the point that a service is not a check.
“We find a women are often the key decision-makers when it comes to choosing where cars go,” sasy Kellie. “They do not want to walk into a dirty, filthy workshop. We provide an environment in which your mother or grandmother would be happy to sit and wait.”
“There are still a lot of backyard mechanics out there. You must know that your car is being properly serviced to manufacturer’s specifications using the right oils and parts, so you fulfil your obligations if you’re an employer, or, as an owner, prevent it costing money before it should.”

Signature Style
THE “BOY’S OWN” GUIDE TO SIMPLE STYLE
48 FASHION Aug 2016
We LOVE working with men at Signature Style. We love your pragmatic approach to style, we love your ‘not taking this too seriously’ vibe and we love it when we can change your perception of shopping! Although it moves a little slower, changes in fashion have an impact on a man’s wardrobe, too. Here’s a list of seven little things you can do to update your wardrobe: • CHANGE YOUR SHOES. You need shoes for work and shoes for fun. Sneans (sneakers and jeans) only work if they are the right sneaker. Check out Nike and Adidas for styles that’ll have you ’down with the kids’.. Too old for that? A pair of Converse worn with your chinos STILL works, but for a stylish update — look for a suede shoe. • MATCH YOUR BELT. That’s right, your belt and shoes should match. If we’re talking work wear, you need to match both the colour and the vibe. If it’s the weekend and a more relaxed shoe is at play, make sure your belt is equally relaxed. • GRAB YOUR CHINOS. Still the ultimate man pant, but still slim and flat-fronted (chinos with pleats will look like an old mans). Match with a shirt and these go out to dinner. Pair with a striped tee and you’ve got casual Sunday handled. • UNBUTTON. A chambray or checked shirt worn open over a white tee is a classic look that really works.

• LOSE THE LOGO TEE. We don’t care that you’ve been to Vegas, nor where you stayed/ate/visited when you were there. True style isn’t a souvenir tee shirt - no matter where the destination was. Replace it with a stylish short sleeved shirt. • BUY SOME NEW JEANS. Especially if your current pairs are old and have lost all their shape. How to know if you’re straying into dangerous territory? Possibly when you’re jeans are as comfortable as your trackies. • GET YOURSELF A CASUAL JACKET. Not a sports coat, not an overcoat and definitely not a trench. You need to find a stylish casual jacket to work back with your equally stylish new wardrobe. Bomber style? Sounds good. ‘50s vibe? Even cooler. Need a hand with this? Why not get in touch and get your look sorted? It will be the quickest, easiest shopping you’ll ever do. Check out our website signaturestyle.co.nz and give us a call on 09 529 5115. Let’s lock down a couple of hours that you’ll actually enjoy. Words: Jackie O'Fee

IN SEARCH OF SLEEP Insomniac Rebecca Isemonger entered the tank at Float Culture.
For Rebecca, insomnia crept in after shift work at a new hospitality job and smashed her body clock with a big old hammer. Deprived of sleep, she became anxious and irritable, her eyes itching and her head filled with fog. “When you’re suffering from insomnia, you can’t switch your brain off,” she says. “It’s a little bit like going to sleep and thinking about every bad life decision you’ve ever made. Thoughts just loop over and over, and you’re thinking, ‘What if this?’, and, ‘What if that?’” Rebecca stopped using electronics at night, but it didn’t help: “I tried lots of different things, different methods for relaxation and sleep, breathing exercises and stuff like that, but nothing worked. I was desperate for a good night’s sleep. “One day I saw an advert for floating. It said something like, ‘Suffering from insomnia? Try floating!’. I thought, ‘Hey, that sounds like me. That’s a great idea!’ And I’ll literally try anything.” The ad was placed by Anton Kuznetsov of Float Culture. Kuznetsov intuited that the anxiolytic properties of floatation might help to break the cycle of stress and deprivation that sustains insomnia. Although there is little hard scientific evidence concerning floatation therapy as a treatment for the condition, it follows that a reduction in cortisol and overall stress is conducive to sleep. “I decided to do it,” Rebecca says. “I thought, ‘If it works, it’ll be fantastic, and if not, I got to try something cool.’ “When I walked in, it was bigger than I expected. I thought it would be much smaller. You shower, and then you get into the pod. For me, the process of the shower is part of the relaxation. It helps your body to unwind, and that’s something that they suggest you do if suffer from insomnia anyway — shower before bed. I got into the pod, and there was music playing and a blue
light on. I left the lights till the music stopped, then switched them off. Then I was in the dark.” Sleep therapists the world over recommend sleeping in as dark an environment as possible. In a float tank, the darkness is complete. “It was around that time that I was thinking, ‘What the hell am I doing?’” says Rebecca. “’This is the stupidest idea I’ve ever had!’ But you just have to go through that. You just have to listen to what your brain has to say, let it say all of that garbage, and then eventually it doesn’t have anything left to say. Up until then, I had never experienced that silence. “I couldn’t tell you how long the float went: being in a confined space without any ability to tell what’s happening in the outside world was, for me, a unique experience. When the music started up again at the end of the session, it felt like someone had tranquilised me.” Exiting the tank, most people experience incredible feelings of calm, relaxation and quiet joy. For Rebecca, deprived of sleep and entirely fresh to floatation, the effects were even more potent. “When I got home I couldn’t even talk on the phone, I was warm, relaxed and just tired. I had the best night’s sleep I’ve had in so, so long. “For anyone with insomnia, I highly, highly recommend floatation. Eventually, you’ll get that moment of silence. It’s just about going in without expectations or pressure. Just like getting to sleep.” Words: Don Rowe

SLEEP DROPS
THE SOLUTION TO LONG SLEEPLESS NIGHTS
NZ’s award winning SleepDrops for Adults comes with a FREE Daytime Revive (our new 5 star remedy) for Energy & Stress Support! FREE Gift! One night three weeks ago I was desperate for sleep! My mind was busy with work related issues and I could not let my brain relax. The monkey in my head kept talking to me so I found it difficult to chill! I tried breathing slowly and all the usual relaxing mind games that one gets told about regarding ‘going to sleep’. If I don’t sleep, it means that my partner also doesn’t! Or he has an incredibly restless night because of my fidgeting! Sounds a like a nightmare doesn’t it? My partner offered to go up to our local pharmacy and buy me something to try and relax me. He came back with Sleepdrops. The instructions were to take five drops. And they worked. I ended up having a peaceful night’s sleep, and I have been taking them each night since. They’re still working! There is no feeling drowsy in the morning — in fact, I have been waking up as fresh as a daisy!
This very limited time offer is exclusive to health stores and pharmacies. For more information visit www.sleepdrops.co.nz Always read the label and take as directed.
Apparently, they also work if you need a cat nap during the day. I haven’t done this yet, but I’m sure there would be no ill effects from it. I highly recommend buying SleepDrops for Adults. Your sleep will be truly peaceful. Words: Martha Matthews

TRADITIONAL LAMB
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
2kg lamb knuckles 75ml sunflower oil 2 x 2.5-inch pieces of cinnamon 1 large bay leaf 2 cardamom pods 5ml cumin seeds 1 onion, finely chopped 10ml coarse salt 30ml crushed ginger 15ml crushed garlic 50ml red chilli powder 7ml ground cumin 10ml ground coriander 5ml garam masala 2.5ml turmeric 3 tomatoes blanched and chopped Fresh coriander to garnish
Here’s how: Heat the sunflower oil on medium in a pot. Add the cinnamon sticks, bay leaf and cardamom pods. Fry the whole spices for a few seconds until fragrant; add the cumin seeds. Add the onion, stir in the salt and sauté until golden brown. Add ginger and garlic paste and fry until the moisture evaporates. Stir the red chilli powder into the fried onion and sauté for a few seconds. Place the lamb in the spice paste and stir well to coat the pieces. Remove the pot from heat if necessary while you do this to prevent the spices from burning. Stir the lamb and once the knuckles are sealed, add the ground cumin, coriander, garam masala and turmeric. Fry for a minute to warm the spices. Pour in the boiled water and leave to simmer on low for 60 – 90 minutes or until the meat is tender. Add the chopped tomato and simmer until they soften and the sauce thickens. Adjust the seasoning and garnish with fresh coriander. Serve with a garnish of coriander leaves, rice and your favourite Indian bread eg: parathas, naans or chapattis. // Serves 6–8 Recipe: Yudhika Sujanani | yudhika.com Photography: Vanessa Lewis | vanessa-lewis.com

SOJI
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 large cinnamon stick 175g semolina 200g butter 100g dessert cream 125g evaporated milk 125ml full cream milk 150ml cold water 2.5ml egg yellow food colouring 45g condensed milk 60g sugar 5ml ground cardamom Dessert cream, to drizzle 100g tinted almonds to garnish
Here’s how: Place the semolina and cinnamon sticks into a pot. Toast the semolina on medium heat until the grains brown slightly. Add the butter and once it melts, fry the semolina for a minute. Remove the pan from the heat and pour in the dessert cream, evaporated and full cream milk, water and egg yellow. Return the pan to the heat and mix well until the soji starts to leave the sides of the pan. Continue stirring and add the condensed milk, sugar and cardamom. Add more sugar according to taste. Once the butter starts to ‘float’ around the side of the pan, remove from the heat. Place in a serving dish and drizzle with dessert cream. PALM COURT 64
HAPPINESS AND HOUSEPLANTS
FOOD Aug 2016
Located on the outskirts of the inner city is one of Auckland’s finest hotels, behind whose doors is an adventurous dining experience that raises the bar to a new level.
Gone are the days when writer’s like George Orwell could use houseplants as an allegory of English stuffiness (as in the novel, Keep the Aspidistra Flying). Instead, houseplants are in.
Palm Court is every bit as streamlined as its namesake. The refined calm is a world away from the busy hustle and bustle of city life. The restful atmosphere and the indulgent menu and wine list make this a favourite for those who appreciate the silver style of service.
But it’s not all about keeping up appearances. It seems that growing houseplants can actually have a positive effect on our health. One study at Exeter University even concluded that growing houseplants in an office can improve well-being by 47%, creativity by 45%, and productivity by 38%.
From season to season, the menu is everything you would expect from a five-star hotel. Extra panache and a modern feel with dishes that are hard to resist. Entrees ($17.50) with such freshness and balance that will pique your interest as Mexican wagyu meat balls, duck confit croquettes, baked buffalo mozzarella, lamb ribs, sushi and sashimi and dim sim. But save your applause for the mains which includes: crispy pork belly ($32), beef scotch ($37.50), duck tagliolini ($29), Volker’s super schnitzel ($36), market fish of the day ($33), risotto ($27), fish and chips ($29.50) and pizza ($25). A selection of sides ($9) completes the menu.
And while this isn’t exactly rocket science, it turns out NASA carried out a study of houseplants looking at their air-filtering properties.
Desserts pack a punch with sweet pleasures such as crème brulee ($16.50), warm pear cake ($16.50, pots de crème ($15.50), chocolate cake with berry compote ($16.50), an ice cream selection ($15.50) and cheese board ($22.50).
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) — Needs bright, indirect light (keep out of direct light). Keep soil moist and feed monthly to improve flowering.
The fare is imaginative and solidly produced with great attention to detail. Volker Marecek’s menu glows like a light box. It’s a document of his travels, captured in highly worked plates that unite intense flavours with rare finesse. For entrees, we opted for sushi and sashimi, a dazzling and generous serve of some of the finest in the city. The freshly crumbed giant schnitzel, hand-cut fries and salad, and the crispy pork belly, fondant potato, apple gel and baby carrots were exceptional and served with a sense of occasion. And Palm Court is serious about its wine too, studded with label curiosities showcasing a carefully constructed choice of by-thebottle and by-the-glass temptations. Words: Dennis and Rosamund Knill

So to help in the pursuit of happiness and houseplants, here are some growing tips and ideas.
AIR SO PURE Aside from looking stylish, these plants remove toxins, oxygenate the air, improve humidity, and are incredibly easy to care for.
Anthurium — Prefers bright, indirect light. Rarely needs repotting, unlike most plants they do best when pot bound. Keep soil moist and feed monthly to improve flowering. Zamioculcas — Also known as ZZ plant. Thrives on neglect — only needs watering around once a month.
HANGING OUT Get creative, use vertical space, and grow delightful greenery in all sorts of peculiar positions. Hanging Terrariums — Buy your own, or get creative and personalise by incorporating interesting, peculiar, or even sentimental objects. Hanging Pots — While any small houseplant can be planted into a hanging pot, trailing plants often look best. Great planting options include English ivy, String of Pearls, Chain of Hearts, Bridal Veil, and various Tradecantia species. Words: Billy Aiken

‘Mora Mora’ in MADAGASCAR The best advice I can give anyone going to Madagascar can be covered off by the phrase mora mora. Loosely translated as ‘slowly slowly’, the sooner you decide to just ‘go with the flow’ the better! I’d also highly recommend you go guided, as the local knowledge of a native Malagasy adds greatly to your insights of the country.
Madagascar is an easy place to like. The world’s fourth largest island, it has evolved in isolation for over 88 million years resulting in an amazing diversity of unique flora and fauna, with 90% of its wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. The people of this tropical country are a melting-pot of Asian, Arab and African, with at least 18 different ethnic groups. Malagasy and French are the official languages, but many people also speak some English — plus the national sport is rugby union, so I felt right at home! The capital city of Antananarivo (referred to as Tana) is home to about 1.4 million people and has a colourful and chaotic vibe with much of life lived out on the streets. Founded in the early 1600s, the narrow cobbled streets and old buildings at its centre have a medieval feel, while in the ‘suburbs’ you can see small houses alongside rice paddies, churches and markets. The roads are shared not only by cars, trucks and the ubiquitous taxibrousses (mini-van shuttles), but also with zebu (bullock) carts, rickshaws and hand-pulled wagons. The exotic wildlife of Madagascar’s national parks is a major drawcard, and one of the best is Andasibe-Mantadia National Park — a world heritage site home to Madagascar’s largest lemur, the Indri, as well as others such as the diademed sifaka, the brown lemur and the black and white ruffed lemur. Also, there’s more than 100 bird species plus colourful chameleons,
amphibians and reptiles. South of Tana is the incredibly scenic Ranomafana National Park, a large area of cloud forest and also a world heritage site. Well-marked trails make exploring easy, and night walks along the park boundaries reveal some tinier treasures such as red mouse lemurs. Madagascar is incredibly photogenic, typified by sweeping rural landscapes complete with ox-drawn ploughs. Numerous artisan workshops and backyard cottage industries were an unexpected highlight for me. The thermal spa town of Antsirabe is home to the country’s largest brewery and artists’ workshops, all are fascinating to explore and worthy of support. For a beach stay head to the low island of Nosy Be — with snorkelling, swimming and diving, or day trips to smaller offshore islands which boast stunning white coral-sand beaches and fantastic seafood. The word ‘unique’ is often overused, but Madagascar can certainly lay claim to it. Better suited to travellers than tourists, its infrastructure is modest and things don’t always come easy — which is a large part of its appeal. Combine this with friendly and accommodating people, diverse landscapes and an amazing variety of flora and fauna and you have a destination that will reward your efforts at every turn. Words: Tony O’Callaghan, a World Journeys Travel Designer

69 JOURNEYS Aug 2016
24 Hours in DUNEDIN Although Dunedin has in the past been dismissed as just a damp student town, it is now possible to see past this reputation. Behind the wild street parties and the enclave of run-down and freezing flats is a city with a unique appeal and a big heart. The historical legacy of what was New Zealand’s largest town during the golden era of the 1860s, combined with the modern energy brought in by the lively students and a vibrant arts scene, create an atmosphere which is unrivalled by any other in New Zealand. Who would have thought that Gothic architecture could go so well with anarchic street art? VOGEL ST KITCHEN — 8:00AM This is one of Dunedin’s newest and coolest cafés, established in an old warehouse building as part of the council’s plan to revitalise the city’s Warehouse Precinct area. The historic and industrial en-vironment outside the café is strikingly juxtaposed with the modern and refreshing interior. Combining these unique vibes with a delicious menu creates a breakfast experience in Dunedin like no other. While you’re in the area, don’t miss the beginnings of what is hoped to be a world-class street art trail, with exciting commissions by several international artists giving the Warehouse Precinct a beautiful burst of colour. ROSS CREEK — 9:30AM Start your day the same way as hundreds of fitness-inspired Dunedinites, with a walk through the Ross Creek Reserve. Central to the reserve is the Ross Creek Reservoir, one of the oldest man-made lakes in New Zealand, created in the 1860s to provide water to the rapidly expanding population of Dunedin during the Otago Goldrush. The beautiful native bush of the reserve will give you a great chance to blend in with nature to kick off your morning right.
GEORGE ST SHOPPING — 11:30AM As the birthplace of iconic labels Nom*D, Company of Strangers and Creeps and Violets, it goes without saying that Dunedin’s shopping opportunities are not to be missed. The most notable of these can be found on George St, the nucleus of the city centre. Boutiques such as Slick Willy’s, Belle Bird and Plume shelve the best of Dunedin and New Zealand fashion, each curating a store which perfectly combines Dunedin’s dark and cold climate with the dynamic and progressive fashion for which it is famous. STARFISH - 12:30PM A trip to Dunedin is not complete without a visit to the starkly beautiful St Clair beach, and there is no better way to spend this than by having lunch at Starfish café and restaurant. My family has a saying that you should never eat a seafood dish more than 10km from the sea, and Starfish’s position on St Clair’s esplanade proves the truth behind this saying; the closer you are, the better it is. Princess Zara Phillips dined at Starfish when she visited Dunedin during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, so it clearly has the royal seal of approval. TUNNEL BEACH — 2:00PM A secluded walking track and excavated tunnel brings you to Dunedin’s most unique and romantic spot, Tunnel Beach. Discovered in the 1870s by the son of William Cargill, Otago’s founder, the track and tunnel were created so the Cargill families could enjoy their own private beach away from the bustling St Clair. The incredible sandstone formations and powerful water rips make this beach an absolute must.
LARNACH CASTLE — 3:30PM Turns out you don’t have to go all the way to Europe to see historic castles, as New Zealand has one of its own on the top of the Otago Peninsula. Larnach Castle was built in 1871, and a tour of the grounds and castle will evoke all sorts of wistful Victorian sentiments. ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE TOUR — 5:30 PM The city is filled with a collection of Victorian and Edwardian gems which will make any architecture enthusiast’s eye sparkle. Otago Boys’ High School, the University of Otago, Olveston House, the Dunedin Prison, the multiple Gothic cathedrals and the iconic railway station are all reminiscent of the first European settlers to arrive in the mid-19th Century, providing a spectacular link between the present and the past. Download an architectural heritage map from the dunedinnz website and immerse yourself in a bygone era.
actually live up to their claims. Rob Roy Dairy has revolutionised the simple Tip Top in a cone with an ice cream parlour extension to their humble corner dairy. Not only will you be served the largest version of a single scoop you have ever seen, you can also make it a ‘designer dessert’ by adding a variety of toppings and sauces. Every subsequent ice cream will seem uninspiring in comparison. SIGNAL HILL — 9:30PM Apart from the occasional lick to ensure the chocolate dip doesn’t go all down your front, try to refrain from devouring your whole ice cream until you get to the top of Signal Hill, Dunedin’s best and most accessible lookout point. Sit and enjoy your frozen treat as you take in the spectacular night view of the Dunedin lights, fringed by the peaceful darkness of the Otago Harbour and Pacific Ocean.
SPEIGHT’S ALE HOUSE — 7:00PM One of the most iconic features of Dunedin is the historic Speight’s Brewery, bringing pride to the south since 1876. Within this brewery is the Speight’s Ale House, the first to open in New Zealand. There is no place to have dinner in Dunedin that is more quintessentially Otago, claiming to provide “hearty, value for money servings of southern fare”. Order a prime locallygrown steak and wash it down the only way accepted in Otago, with a nice and cold pint of Speight’s.
AS AN AFTERTHOUGHT… Dunedin is the metropolitan hub of an Otago community which is more united than any other province in New Zealand. This is no more evident than at Forsyth Barr Stadium, the unyielding fortress of their beloved Highlanders rugby team. Cocooned within its enclosed walls you will find 30,000 people all passionate about and screaming for one thing and one thing only. As an Otago girl born and bred, I admit that I may be a little bit biased, but the facts speak for themselves. Why pass up an opportunity to watch the defending champions on their own stage?
ROB ROY DAIRY — 9:00PM At first glance, it looks like any old dairy. But not just any old dairy could boast having the best ice creams in Dunedin and

CHECK IN TO CHILL OUT Thrill seekers, wine lovers and families will all fall for the charms of Central Otago’s Kinross Cottages.
Where in the world can you spend the evening tasting incredible local wines before retreating to your private vineyard cottage to plan the next day’s ski adventure? The simple answer is: Kinross Cottages.
comfortable, Kinross’ cottage accommodation will delight guests. Self-catering and with well-equipped kitchens, every detail has been thought of, and on the coldest of winter nights these rooms are the ultimate winter retreat.
Perfectly positioned halfway between Queenstown and Bannockburn, Kinross lies in the heart of Gibbston’s legendary ‘Valley of the Vines’. Fourteen rustic cottages await nestled within a stunning vineyard of pinot noir, pinot gris and gewurtztraminer vines.
To complement the cottage accommodation, a purpose-built barn houses Kinross Trading Post, a café and wine cellar. One of its distinct features is its operation as the cellar door for five wine partners Wild Irishman, Valli, Hawkshead, Domaine Thomson and Coal Pit. With the added bonus of an outdoor hot tub and play area on site there is literally no reason to leave!
Taking inspiration from its beginnings as a family station of Scottish immigrants, each cottage captures the pioneering spirit of Gibbston’s ‘grandfather’, original landowner Thomas Kinross. And if the word ‘cottage’ spurs memories of dark, pokey rooms, then you can relax. Spacious, warm and immensely

PARNELL RISES The Rise and the Geyser are both a statement and a commitment to the well-being of the planet. - Leah La Hood, ABC Business Consultants Ltd -
Auckland’s very own city village, Parnell — also the city’s very first suburb — is experiencing something of a renaissance. “It’s a well-known fact that the hospitality sector is one of the first to take advantage of resurgences in town centres,” says Cheryl Adamson, Parnell Business Association general manager. “It’s as if they have a nose for more than exceptional cuisine.” Fast catching up with the likes of Ponsonby and Takapuna, Cheryl says Parnell is finally realising its gastronomical potential: “Following on the heels of front runners 46 & York and the roaring success of Woodpecker Hill, some areas of Parnell such as St Georges Bay Road are quadrupling their hospitality offering in the wake of increased commercial development.” Business is booming too, in The Rise, a new food precinct located in the Geyser, New Zealand’s first 6 Green Star Building. “Tenancies are still available,” says leasing agent Leah La Hood of ABC Business Consultants Ltd, “but only to socially responsible operators who share the building’s ethos of conscious business.” “We are in-line with international hospitality trends of hyper-local sourcing and environmental sustainability,” says Leah. “The Rise and the Geyser are both a statement and a commitment to the well-being of the planet. We welcome vendors who are travelling the same journey.”
Exciting times indeed for Parnell. Verve sat down with two local business owners, one of whom is among the suburb’s longest serving; the other, one of the newest kids on this most beautiful of blocks.
Fran Davies, Director of International Art Centre “Parnell is our home,” says Fran. “Its history, beauty, and energy are unique.” Since 1971, the centre has been at the forefront of the New Zealand art market. “Auction sales such as the recent record price of $1.3M achieved for a painting by C.F. Goldie draw media and public attention not only to International Art Centre, but to Parnell as a whole,” says the director. After 45 years at its current Parnell Road location, the centre will be moving to brand new premises at number 202, opening its doors on 17 August. “Having been here for so long, the International Art Centre is a well established Parnell landmark,” says Fran. “What I see happening now is really exciting. I call it Parnell’s Renaissance. Imaginative growth on the historical foundations of New Zealand’s oldest suburb. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
Laura Verner, Owner of Pasture Restaurant This month, husband and wife team Ed and Laura Verner open the doors to an all new and wholly unique Parnell eatery.
77 PARNELL
“Our vision is for food inspired by nature, created with a fine dining technique and served in a fun and relaxed atmosphere,” says Laura. “The simplicity of our dishes will belie the number of hours that go into them. The menu will be driven by seasonal plants and vegetables, and meats will be unusual cuts. Ed is very passionate about butchery.”
Aug 2016
Rather than buying in pre-cut meats, Ed will buy in “half an animal” at a time then prepare it himself in-house. “Various parts of the meat will be used for various parts of the menu,” says Laura, “and what can’t be cooked will be cured.” Sustainability is a big part of the couple’s philosophy. While many fine dining establishments use only the prettiest parts of their produce, Pasture plans to minimise waste. Sundays will see the introduction of an a la carte menu enabling the chefs to get creative with what’s left. The open plan design means guests can watch the magic unfold in the kitchen, while the food will be served by the chefs. “Because our dishes are so innovative and unusual, people will want to ask questions,” says Laura. “So they’ll be able to ask the actual person who made them.” Traditional techniques such as fermenting, pickling and preserving will play a prominent part. “These old school methods were born out of necessity in the days before refrigeration,” says Laura. “You harvested what was abundant and made sure that it would last throughout the year. We have been preserving the seasons for well over a year now and have this incredible library of flavours. It’s an enjoyable process, it’s traditional, and takes you back to your roots.”
What does Parnell mean to you on a personal level? “A great deal. As a 16-year-old, I remember Les Harvey, the’ King of Parnell’, laying bricks and planting flowers throughout the suburb. The bronze statue outside Antoine’s Restaurant celebrates his vision. In the late 1960s my father, Graham Chote, saw potential and opportunity in Parnell which by the 1980s became a magnate for what was known then as the ‘in crowd’. Fabulous personalities shopped, partied, worked, dined and celebrated at venues such as Patrick Steel Couture, Iguacu, the VGB, Exchange, Windsor Castle and Antoines. Parnell Road is still my Boulevard of Dreams.” There is, adds Fran, a real sense of community: “With exquisite speciality retailers such as Passion for Paper, Parnell retains the ambience of a village, albeit a 21st century one, and that in itself is something special and well-worth retaining.” And she’s excited about what’s to come. “City Construction’s unwavering commitment to Parnell along with projects such as their beautiful palm-filled piazza and the retention of precious historical buildings point the way to a bright future.”
Each of the six courses of the degustation menu will be accompanied by a recommended organic wine, beer, or spirit: “We would like to encourage people to allow us to take them on a journey. All of our wines are organic and biodynamic and predominantly from New Zealand. We’re very keen to promote the natural wine industry here in New Zealand, to support small independent vineyards which share our philosophy and believe in doing things differently. We want to be an outlet for that.” Non-alcoholic handmade beverages such as vegetable juices or kombucha will be available for the drivers and teetotalers, too. By day, a section of the building will open to serve French press coffee and their own freshly bread baked. There is no gas, with all food cooked over a real fire. Out back, there’s even a research and development area. The intimate space contains just 25 seats. “We want it be understated,” says Laura. “We don’t want to create a fine dining environment where you are worried about using the right fork. We want it to be fun. Pasture is our idea of the perfect restaurant. It won’t be for everyone, but it is an authentic expression of what motivates us, of what we think is delicious and beautiful. Pasture is the sum of us.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Further Eating It’s exciting to see so many new introductions into the hospitality sector in Parnell, with more to come later in the year. We know that differentiated top class eateries act as a catalyst for other retail and drive foot traffic. Previously a bit of a hospitality desert, with award-winning Cibo, The Paddington, and La Cigale holding the fort, the St Georges Bay Road area is at the forefront of a vibrant rejuvenation, with hospitality eagerly claiming their share. Huckleberry Farms, New Zealand’s leading retailer of natural, organic and speciality products has just opened its eighth store in the Saatchi building on The Strand, while The Red Rabbit Coffee Co, founded in Wellington, are relocating their entire roastery to take up occupation in the redeveloped warehouse sheds in Faraday Street. Next door, the Krukzeiner Properties’ development wraps around the Faraday Street corner and extends up to Cleveland Road. Cognisant of the limited hospitality offering to office workers seeking scrumptious delights, they have announced early starters off the block including Madame Jojos, Goodness Gracious and an exciting new café on the corner premises to open later this year. Then in Parnell Road, the presentation of Osteria in the newly minted façade of NSP certainly gives us good reason to either start or end the day with one of their Italian delights, and in the final stages of construction, a new gastro pub is set to open opposite Woodpecker Hill. Owners of the extremely successful 46 & York, JP Schmidt and Dana Johnston, say their new venue will provide ambiance par excellence — just what Parnell needs to reinvigorate their night life. Following the eagerly awaited opening of Pasture, coming soon to tempt our tastebuds at No. 112 Parnell Road will be ‘Azon’. 2015 MasterChef NZ finalist Leo Fernandez has a vision to offer diners a taste of an amazingly unique Filipino experience: traditional food both prepared and cooked from the heart, flared with contemporary and modern touches. HAVE YOU HAD THE “MONEY TALK”?
86 PARNELL Aug 2016
In 2011 the US based National Endowment for Financial Education discovered that 31% of Americans who responded to a poll admitted lying to their partners about their finances. Things like concealing a small purchase or a secret bank account, gambling problems or hidden debts. 67% of respondents said the secrets, when revealed, led to arguments, 42% said it damaged trust, and 16% said it even led to divorce. Termed “financial infidelity,” the results of such behaviour in New Zealand are just as devastating. THE WARNING SIGNS OF FINANCIAL INFIDELITY • You find statements for a credit card you know nothing about. • Cash has gone missing. • Your partner becomes paranoid about getting mail. • Your partner acquires new possessions. • Your partner begins worrying about financial hardship. • Your partner becomes emotional when the subject of money arises. • Your partner becomes involved in a financially addictive past-time. • Your partner lies to friends and family when discussing their spending. WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT? DON’T ACCUSE! One of the worst things you can do is make the big accusation; you should firstly figure out what the problem is -- it could be that your partner is simply focusing wholly on short-term goals, or that they are looking forward to a different future than you may have in mind.
We are based at 100 Parnell Road.
BE FINANCIALLY TRANSPARENT. It is only fair that if you demand financial openness from your partner, you also must be fully transparent. GET A FULL FINANCIAL CHECK-UP FOR BOTH OF YOU. This is where the team at enableMe can play a vital role with a Financial Consultation with you and your partner.
REQUEST A CONSULTATION Verve Readers are eligible for a $200 discount off the cost of the initial consultation.
enableMe consultants have all the expertise and skill to help couples agree on shared goals and how those objectives can be blended into a robust financial plan for the future. The core of our work is around being accountable to someone else and being accountable to a plan...consistent with the old adage of “failing to plan is planning to fail”. Financial infidelity can be a very challenging issue to overcome in a relationship. It is often a core symptom of two people who aren’t communicating well and have different visions for their future - this adds up to a damaged relationship that only limps forward. — Words: Alistair Johannesson Co-owner, North Harbour enableMe

ROLLING WITH THE STONES It’s a brand new chapter for husband-and-wife real estate team Steve and Lisa Stone who are heading Ray White’s brand spanking new Parnell office. Verve caught up with the excited couple in their new premises with the scent of fresh paint and newly un-bubble-wrapped furniture still hanging in the air.
“The majority of Auckland real estate agents — the most successful ones anyway — tend to work in teams,” says Steve. “Clients generally expect that there will be more than one person working to sell their house, and with us being married, that works particularly well. Our different approaches are grounded by the same values. One of the things that most appealed about Ray White was the family values.” Now into their sixth year, the Stones are relatively new to the industry, but have already established quite the reputation. One so strong, in fact, that they were invited to lead this Parnell hub. “Ray White is still a family owned company, and one that is always looking at ways to improve,” adds Lisa. “That fits with what Steve and I try to do. It’s a simple thing, but not not an easy one. There are so many different personalities and situations you must manage to ensure that everyone is satisfied.” Having worked for the likes of IBM and Telecom in their previous professional lives, the couple are used to dealing with major projects. When it comes to real estate, integrity and tenacity, they both say, are both key.
novel idea is their sign-written Mini which they take a photo of in a certain spot, post online, then ask people to guess the location before a listing comes up. “It’s a great way of promoting our business and the property,” says Steve. “We’ve reached upwards of 25,000 people by doing this.” The Stones have lived in Parnell for the past four years and are thrilled at the opportunity to now also set up shop there. “We love the community here,” Lisa says. “One of the best parts of the job is meeting a range of amazing people and helping them move to the next stage of their lives, which can be a very stressful time. Knowing that we ease that is extremely rewarding.” “We see our role in terms of helping people, not in terms of ‘the sale’,” says Steve. “If your heart’s not in the right place, then you’ll never do a job to its full potential. It’s important to have good chemistry with the clients.” And have the pair found a way of not taking their work home with them? “No!” they both chuckle in unison.
“The real estate industry hasn’t always had a great name, but those days of cowboy agents are long gone,” Steve says.
“Even if we’re out to dinner we’ll be making notes about how to improve the business,” says Steve.
“The process to get the license has become much more stringent,” says Lisa. “You have to sit 11 papers, whereas before it was just something you did in an afternoon. It’s rather complicated.”
“But when you enjoy it as much as we do,” says Lisa, “it’s not like work anyway.”
The couple use virtual tours to showcase properties internationally, and they embrace social media, too. Each week they hold an online Q&A offering free advice to would-be buyers and sellers. A

Traditonal Values In Today's Market One of the charming things about Parnell is the way it successfully blends the tradition of Auckland’s early years with the commercial realities of the 21st century. It reminds us that real success is not a question of constantly abandoning our past, but of bringing its best along with us as we embrace our future. There’s a lot to be said for old-fashioned values. There’s also a lot to be said for a vision of tomorrow. For our clients, it means a set of values they can rely on — a solid history, a strong client focus, individually tailored strategies. For us, it means continued growth and success.

Mid-century modern accents such as this coffee table and cushion bring a playful pop edge. The artwork is a photograph taken by Rob on a shoot, and the wooden objects upon it depict New York’s skyline. RIGHT | Thanks to the double volume created by the roof extension, the sitting area’s sense of space is luxurious, despite its actual size.

BIG LIVING, SMALL SPACE Truly inspired design hacks have turned this small urban apartment in Cape Town into an expansive work-eatsleep-play zone that belies its 58-sqm footprint. Text: Laura Twiggs | Styling: Sven Alberding | Photos: Warren Heath

Wooden fixtures on the mezzanine link the upstairs space to the living area below and provide storage and display opportunities. Rob has been collecting cameras for the past 10 years — and all of these actually work, as does the radio (an original from the sixties which was his mother’s). The magazine rack continues the mid-century modern theme and the nesting dolls are a memento from a shoot for Smirnoff: they represent Russian presidents.
With the adjoining balcony, the sitting area feels expansive — especially since it enjoys uninterrupted views of the beachfront. The multipurpose unit houses a pull-out work station under the TV (perfect for after-hours video editing), and an original Bang & Olufsen sound system underlines the hipster cred. The mid-century modern occasional chair is, according to Rob, “the most comfortable chair ever”.
94 HOME & DESIGN Aug 2016
The most genius aspect of this space has to be the mezzanine level extension. As the gradient would have been too steep, architect Michael Lumby of L&L Architects devised a double staircase, with left and right steps at alternate heights. This meant it was possible to add the extra 20m bedroom to the space and create an airy double-volume sitting area with maximised light.
Keeping with the parallel design grid, a long and lean table continues the elongating line. Aided by minimalist black, chrome-legged Eames chairs, its lean legs and floating top underscore the sense of airiness even as together, chairs and table create a bold black visual and spatial anchor. Using the balcony table as an extension, eight to 10 people are comfortably accommodated for dinner.
RIGHT | Running parallel to the encompassing wall unit, a wooden room divider works hard: it demarcates the entrance hall, separates the working kitchen space, and houses appliances out of sight. In an otherwise stark and clinical space, the communication between these two feature fixtures is understated but profound — by introducing and repeating the organic material of wood, they add warmth to the entire composition.

ARCHITECTS WITH A DIFFERENCE 100 HOME & DESIGN Aug 2016
We all love the traditional architecture that makes our neighbourhoods so special. But while we may covet the spirit of past eras, most of us have no desire to forego the benefits of 21st century living. Achieving the ideal balance between old and the new, without compromising either, is what Salmond Reed Architects does best. A recent Parnell house addition showcases the successful results they can deliver. Owners of this small cottage/villa in a premium location loved the Victorian character of their home, but recognised that there was no way they could alter the original compact footprint of the house to sufficiently accommodate their needs without detracting from its fundamental charm. Indeed, a series of previous random rear additions had already compromised the character of the original dwelling by altering its roof-line and basic plan. Replacing these additions with a contemporary pavilion to provide adequate indoor/outdoor living spaces, capturing the property’s panoramic views, was an obvious solution. Achieving the essential physical and abstract links between the original dwelling and the new extension in a way that established and emphasised the integrity of each, challenged the designers to think beyond the conventional. After carefully considering the structural massing and materials of the existing house, a decision was made to restore its original roof-line and basic shape and to use its kitchen space, modernised and upgraded within the original villa footprint, to provide the necessary ‘link’ with the distinctly contemporary extension. Here, corrugated iron, weatherboard, and board and batten finishes were given a modern twist, their use establishing a comfortable relationship with the restored villa. The resultant design is a celebration of the charm and character of late 19th century architecture juxtaposed against a clearly 21st century form to replace the jumble of unsympathetic structures previously occupying the property. From the street-front, there is no detectable change to the neighbourhood character, yet the design more than fulfils the owners’ aspirations for modern living, providing a stunning illustration of the breadth of sensitive adaptation which can be achieved within the constraints of a ‘character neighbourhood’. To achieve the seemingly impossible, look no further than Salmond Reed Architects.

EMMA CAMDEN
At a talk recently at the opening of Emma Camden: NOW Sarjeant Gallery curator Greg Donson talked about the energy and momentum with which Emma lived her life. He said she was always on the go and always looking towards the next thing, hence the use of the word ‘now’ in the title of her current survey exhibition that is touring from the Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui to The Dowse in Lower Hutt. This ‘nowness’ exists in Emma’s artistic and personal life. Emma’s work has always sought to push the limits of both the medium and process. Not one to wait and learn from others’ discoveries, she has pioneered ways to cast glass that to this day still baffles the international leaders in the field, among whom she proudly sits. Born and educated in England, Emma gained her degree at the University of Sunderland. Emma immigrated to New Zealand in 1991 and was based and taught in Auckland for many years until she moved to Whanganui in 2000, where she still lives with her partner and fellow glass artist David Murray, and their two children. Emma distinctly remembers the moment when she knew that she wanted to be an artist. Her exact age she is unsure of, but she clearly remembers holding her father’s hand and it being above her head when he took her to visit the studio of the sculptor Frank Martin. The man and his studio left a significant impression on Emma and it was during this visit that she realised she wanted to be an artist. Emma’s work reflects her love of history. It is architectural in style, as seen in her Viaduct series, inspired by the ancient Roman aqueducts; or the ancient Egyptian pyramids in her Passage series. Her work combines these elements to beautiful effect. Emma has experienced two great losses in her life: that of her mother, and that of her best friend, in her forties. Both have deeply informed her work. While not religious herself, Emma’s mother’s relationship
with religion at the end of her life has greatly informed her work. The many conversations they had about life and death and that which follows still inspires her. The pyramid influence of her Passage series shows not only both her love of history and her architectural style, but her interest in the Egyptian belief in the afterlife. As in her Passage works, it is believed that the small chambers and passageways that led from the tombs to the outside allowed the soul to leave the body and reach the afterlife. Emma’s characteristic energy and need to keep fit for glass casting led her to return to her teenage love of roller-skating. Many locals will attest to seeing Emma cruising through Whanganui on her skates at great speeds with the family dog in tow. Through a friend, Emma was introduced to a roller derby team and a new hobby was formed. As a glass artist during the day, working in a locally made material, Gaffer glass whose casting glass is made up of 45% lead crystal, Emma’s roller derby name is aptly ‘Crystal Crusher’, and her number is 45. As with all things Emma does, the full weight of her passion and energy is thrown behind it. Emma has even started a second roller derby league in Whanganui which she coaches and manages. The new works made for Emma Camden: NOW will form the basis of an exhibition at Masterworks Gallery in Auckland in 2017. Words: Eloise Kitson ABOVE | Emma Camden in her studio. The Magnificence of Museums
NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM LONDON The cathedral-like London attraction officially opened in 1881 in order to display artefacts collected by revered doctor, Sir Hans Sloane, who died in 1753. During the 19th century, most museums were only accessible to the elite, but this was free, allowing the Victorian population to marvel at the spoils of Britain’s ever-growing empire. Today, it houses an astonishing 80 million specimens, some collected by Charles Darwin, spanning billions of years.
YAD VASHEM HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL JERUSALEM The word ‘museum’ stems from the Greek mouseion, meaning ‘seat of the muses’. No one knows for sure when museums were first built (though it was likely in the Middle East), but Oxford University’s Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, founded in 1683, is the world’s oldest serving public one. Its assemblage of treasures is immensely diverse, including 8,000-year-old artefacts, Egyptian ceramics, and the West’s finest collection of Chinese paintings. Verve brings you some more of the world’s greatest institutions of history.
A museum to honour the memory of the six million souls murdered during one of humanity’s darkest hours. Built on the slopes of Har Hazikaron, the complex houses a Holocaust museum — with films, photographs and documentations of the time — along with various halls of remembrance, an eternal flame and the tree-lined Avenue of the Righteous Among Nations, in respect of non-believers who risked their lives to rescue Jews from the Nazis.
VATICAN MUSEUMS VATICAN CITY
THE LOUVRE PARIS
Though first established as a collection of sculptures gathered by Pope Julius II at the turn of the 16th century, the museum complex as it exists today came into being in the late 1700s. They include esteemed structures such as the Sistine Chapel, Raphael’s Rooms and the Gallery of Tapestries, housing masterpieces by some of the finest artists and sculptors of Europe and beyond.
The world’s most visited art gallery can trace its roots back to a late 12th century fortress, reimagined as a royal palace four hundred years later. The buildings became an official museum during the French Revolution, displaying riches ‘reclaimed’ from the disposed elite, before Napoleon added to the collection with spoils from his various campaigns. Today, its most treasured piece is undoubtedly the Mona Lisa. Stolen from the Louvre in 1911, in now sits behind bullet proof glass.
NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM WASHINGTON Nowhere else on Earth will you find a greater collection of aviation and space exploration artefacts. Among the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum’s thousands of displays are the Wright Flyer of 1903, the Spirit of St Louis and Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia. There’s even a real life moon rock which you can touch. Flanking the main attraction is the Albert Einstein Planetarium and the Public Observatory from where yo can view spots of the sun and the moon’s craters.
MUSEUM OF ISLAMIC ART DOHA A museum as famed for what’s going on outside as much as what’s in. Qatar’s stunning museum, which riffs on contemporary and ancient Islamic architecture, was designed by the legendary I. M. Pei, (he was coaxed out of retirement for the project). Inside, you’ll also find pieces of a non-religious nature, not to mention the Idam restaurant, Alain Ducasse’s first foray into the Middle East.
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY MEXICO CITY First founded in the early 1880s, the museum as we know it today was built in 1964, and nowhere else houses a finer gathering of ancient Mexican art. Within the intriguing architecture which spreads from a central concrete ‘umbrella’, awaits over half a million relics from iconic civilisations such as the Mayans and Aztecs, including the fabled Sun Stone, which represents the history of the world.
STATE HERMITAGE MUSEUM AND WINTER PALACE ST PETERSBURG One of the world’s largest, oldest and most visited museums, this incredible Russian collection is more than three million pieces strong. Housed in former Tsar residences, it was founded by Catherine the Great in the mid-18th century. The sprawling complex is home to the likes of Ancient Egyptian artefacts, prehistoric art, and works of the Renaissance.
THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART NEW YORK CITY The USA’s biggest art museum, usually referred to as the ‘Met’, opened in 1880. The enormous, palace-like structure boasts a permanent collection two million strong and cradles ancient artefacts up to 5,000 years old. Some of its most prized pieces include works by masters such as Monet, with impressive international displays like the European medieval arms and armour collection, the Islamic Wing, and Chinese Garden Court.
THE TERRACOTTA ARMY XI’AN One of the most staggering facts about this most staggering — and enormous — of archaeological finds is that it was discovered entirely by accident by farmers drilling a water well as recently as 1974. If they’d decided to dig just a few metres in another direction then this sprawling site may still be burried. The 2,000-year-old stone army surrounding the footballpitch-sized tomb of Qin Shi Huang was built to afford protection in the afterlife.

RAY HAYDON AT SANDERSON CONTEMPORARY 6-25 SEP
112 ART & ABOUT Aug 2016
Mention carbon fibre and most people think of the solid, utilitarian forms of racing yachts and supercars. Parnell-based sculptor Ray Haydon sees a completely different potential — the ability to make fine art. After several decades in a successful career working in bronze, wood, stainless steel, aluminium and Corten steel, crafting a range of indoor and outdoor works, Haydon’s exploration into the properties of carbon fibre has opened up a whole new area of imagery. “Imagine a ribbon thrown in the air, the way it loops and curves, that’s the effect I’m trying to achieve,” says Haydon of the light, curvaceous sculptural forms created for a new show at Sanderson Contemporary in Newmarket this September. The show, entitled Cadence, presents a series of wall-mounted sculptures made from a carbon fibre core sheathed in wood veneer. The effect is of a moment of frozen motion captured in incredibly light, flexible forms. The works appear to float on the wall, attached with slim steel fixings, where they throw bold shadows in the passing light of day or under artificial light. The works are made from up to 7.5m of carbon fibre which is elegantly looped and furled into a finished art work sometimes more than 2m wide. “The beauty of this material is that it holds its form, any other material would be too heavy,” says Haydon.
thepoiroom.co.nz 17 Osborne Street, Newmarket Shop 10, Lot 3, 130 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby
Haydon came to sculpture after a varied career in jewellery, silversmithing, furniture making and hand-crafting stainless steel fixings for super yachts. Arts writer Warwick Brown has previously called Ray Haydon a “restless inventor” who honours the old traditions of fine finish and attention to the smallest details. He describes his artworks as, “astounding in their originality, elegant complexity and the perfection of their making”. Music review
BLOOD ORANGE — FREETOWN SOUND On his third self written/produced LP, Dev Hynes, who creates his music under the moniker Blood Orange, introduces us to his resonance puzzle. It pieces together a spectrum of societal racial, religious, and gender agendas to vocalise his collection of Freetown Sounds — but his introduction belongs to a voice foreign to his own. Instead, he lends first track ‘By Ourselves’ to slam poet Ashlee Haze who alludes to herself as ‘a 26 year old woman who learned how to dance until she felt pretty’ and appoints Missy Elliot and her visibility to ‘a million black girls just waiting to see someone who looks like them’ the reason she grew to love the woman she is today. Ashlee’s compelling proposition atop Dev’s signature nostalgic, jazzy instrumentals speak intense volumes, and it’s not the first time Blood Orange uses a valiant female narrative to do so. Each of the 17 tracks’ liberty and determination help in personifying it’s Freetown Sound title, named after Dev’s fathers hometown of Freetown, Sierra Leone, but the real stars of the
show are the women. Contrasting with his own first person, candidly sharp yet ever sonically syrupy account, one of the most notable aspects of Freetown Sound is the array of both established (Debbie Harrie on ‘E.V.P.’ and Nelly Furtado on ‘Hadron Collider’) and unestablished (Empressof on ‘Best To You’ and Carly Rae Jepsen on ‘Better Than Me’) powerful female voices Dev uses to tell a marginalised narrative, creating a very much feminism driven record; solidifying himself an ally to the female gaze and particularly the black female experience. Blood Orange makes room for his own experience though of course, unpacking exactly what it means for him to be a young, black male in a world where black masculinity is fragile and fluidity rarely expressed, disclosing in a recent interview with Pitchfork: “If you’re not a white straight male, most things on this album are on your mind right now.” Words: Laura McInnes

RAMS // 4 AU GUS T Majestically shot in a spectacular, weatherswept valley, this wryly observed fable about two brothers who are more obstinate than the sheep they breed begins as a droll comedy about rural life and grows into a graceful and mythic tale about family, community and legacy.
In 2013, the world’s media reported on a shocking mountain-high brawl as European climbers fled a mob of angry Sherpas. Director Jennifer Peedom and her team set out to uncover the cause of this altercation, intending to film the 2014 climbing season from the Sherpas’ point of view. Instead, they captured what was at the time Everest’s greatest tragedy, when a huge block of ice crashed down onto the climbing route, killing 16 Sherpas. For the Himalayan workers repeatedly traversing the mountain carrying supplies, the risk of this hazardous endeavour is multiplied. This stunning documentary, shot by high-altitude cinematographer Renan Ozturk, explores the unequal relationship between cashed-up foreign expeditions and their guides. It is also a story of family and tradition, as exemplified by Phurba Tashi Sherpa, an experienced climber at the heart of this commanding film. AVAILABLE IN HOME ENTERTAINMENT FORMAT AUGUST 24. FROM CANNES TO CANTERBURY
Producer Emma Slade, head of Auckland-based Firefly Films, has a busy year ahead with two projects to juggle. Acclaimed screenwriter of Philomena fame, Jeff Pope, is heading out this summer to work on a biopic of Charles Upham, the New Zealand soldier who was the only person awarded the Victoria Cross twice during the Second World War; while the second project, a movie adaptation of the Margaret Mahy book, The Changeover, begins filming in Christchurch in just a few months. I caught up with Emma on her return from Cannes where she secured funding for both films. “I’ve been several times now, and it’s nice, because you begin to feel like part of the community,” says the producer. “I remember the feeling of being at Cannes for the very first time, and it’s like another universe. It seems like everyone is in the middle of this glass ball and you’re on the outside of the glass knocking to get it. It feels like the place is massive, but, over this years, you realise that it’s not quite that big at all and that this person knows that person and everyone is connected. You realise you are part of a family.” Emma says she’s definitely noticed an increase in the number of Kiwis attending Cannes over the years (“I did hear of one guy from New Zealand who arrived at thought the whole thing was so bizarre he locked himself in his hotel room then went home! He just couldn’t cope with it”) and that if you want to make films that will be seen internationally then making international connections is a must. “Cannes is where finance and creativity meet.” The work that goes on behind the scenes by producers is immense, yet it’s always the actors and directors who get all the credit. I ask if producers are the unsung heroes of the movie industry. “I think it’s probably true that most people don’t realise the work we do, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call myself an unsung hero. Maybe it’s a personality thing, but generally speaking producers don’t like the limelight. I enjoy building the platform
upon which other people can collaborate to create something amazing. You need a broad set skill set to be producer, it’s a varied role and you’re committed from beginning to end. It’s like having a child.” What kind of skills do you need? “It helps to have a business and creative brain — most people usually have one or the other. You must have the ability to spot talent, recognise others’ skills, cope well with stress and frustration and be both a control freak and know when to relinquish control! A fine gut instinct is also helpful.” The assembled cast and crew for The Changeover is certainly a fascinating and talented homegrown and international mix.
Directing the supernatural tale is New Zealand husband and wife team Stuart McKenzie and Miranda Harcourt, with Kiwi actresses Lucy Lawless and recent Sundance Film Festival award-winner Melanie Lynskey backed by internet sensation Jamie Curry. Also on board is renowned Brit actor, Timothy Spall. “It’s all very exciting,” says Emma. “Timothy Spall is such a phenomenal character actor, he’ll make an amazing baddie. Melanie’s talents have obviously just been recognised at Sundance, and Miranda knew her back from her Heavenly Creature days. Same with Lucy Lawless, she has such an interesting audience base across all ages and fields.” Emma believes Christchurch to be the perfect setting on a metaphorical level as the movie is about a seismic event, with
the world quite literally shifting underfoot. Fitting too is that the book’s late author, Margaret Mahy, was born there. “New Zealand has such a strong, unique and interesting voice,” says Emma. “There is a lot of content out in the world, a lot of noise, so trying to find projects and material that cut through it can be quite difficult. But New Zealand can do that. There’s no doubt that the likes of Peter Jackson, Flight of the Conchords and Lorde have done amazing things for our creative industries internationally. We’re finding our own identity, where we want to be in the world. We are a very special, very unique place and it’s exciting to be part of it all and have the opportunity to be able to present it on a global stage.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces
PLASTIC FOR PALS AND PLEASURE “She never betrays, and is not after only money.”
121 Earlier this year, China’s People’s Daily reported on how lifelike dolls are “affecting some people’s attitude toward sex”. With more than 50 types of silicone dolls available on the Chinese market, buyers are able to essentially build their perfect partner, and have even been known to showcase them in public by taking them on dates around towns. It’s commonplace in China for men to spend great stretches away from home in search of work, so some are also using them as an aid to prevent unfaithfulness. Twenty-nine-year-old Liu — who did not wish to give his full name — has been married for more than ten years, and works as a car designer. He tells AFP: “Honestly, it is very easy to just pay a little money to find a woman in China, but I simply cannot bring myself to cheat on my wife.” His doll cost $3,400 and sports removable parts for easy cleaning. “As an industrial designer, I can’t neglect the lack of realistic details, so I just use it a few times.” Lui adds that the only way a doll is better than a woman is that it won’t resist, “so people can do whatever they want with it”. Senji Nakajima lives with his “perfect” silicon woman, Saori, in his Tokyo apartment, and transports her around the city in a wheelchair. “She never betrays, and is not after only money,” says the 61-yearold. “I’m tired of rational humans. They are heartless.” The Chinese sex toy market is estimated to generate more than $20 million by business-to-business sex toy platform ChinaSexQ.com. But it’s not just in Asia that the industry is booming. Davecat lives in south-eastern Michigan. He bought his first doll in 2000. Davecat tells The Atlantic that though he is “quite attracted” to “organic” women, it doesn’t mean they will have a compatible mindset with his own. Instead, he married his doll. Now Davecat has a mistress, and she’s synthetic too. Sex dolls have been around for a very, very long time. Ovid’s ancient poem Metamorphoses tells the story of sculptor Pygmalion who falls in love with one of his works, while images of sexual toys and body forms appear in Indian Mughal paintings possibly as old as 500 years. In the 17th century, European sailors fashioned dolls from scraps of cloth and leather, often trading them with the Japanese, and even today, in Japan, sex dolls are sometimes referred to as ‘Dutch wives’. The next big thing will be robots. American firm RealDoll are looking to develop a doll which will not just blink, move its mouth, and chat, but also react as if enjoying intercourse. Dr Kathleen Richardson of De Monfort University finds such technology “disturbing”. She tells the Mirror the creation of such robots will “contribute to detrimental relationships between men and women, adults and children, men and men and women and women”. “Apart from technosexuals and child-free people, one group of people who would be well-suited for synthetic partners are introverts,” says Davecat. There is, he goes on, a big difference between loneliness and being alone, with most introverts simply preferring their own company. So having a synthetic partner — or in his case, two — means that you can interact with them whenever you want to, while being free to enjoy solitude at will, “and without being made to feel guilty about it.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

TOP SEVEN HIDDEN COSTS OF SELF-MANAGEMENT
123 BUSINESS/ EDUCATION & SOCIETY Aug 2016
You may believe that you can save money by managing your property yourself. This belief is often wrong due to the hidden costs and risks taken by not using a professional property manager. RENT TOO LOW — Self-managed properties are more likely to be rented below market value due to a lack of comparative data on market rentals. A good local property manager will have data from continually letting properties in the area. You don’t review the rent regularly due to a fear of losing a good tenant. Rents should be reviewed annually, and adjusted when appropriate — even for good tenants. HIGH VACANCY RATES — A self-managed property is at higher risk of vacancies due to a lack of a professional relationship with the tenant and a failure to treat the property as a business. Self-managing landlords are generally reluctant to start viewings at the property before the tenant moves out because of inconvenience to the tenant or the tenant being uncooperative. This is a sure way of losing around three weeks rent — almost a year of management fees. DAMAGE AND CLEANING — Selfmanaged landlords are often not able to be consistently firm enough with tenants to effect high standards of responsibility during and at the end of a tenancy. A common mistake is failing to complete a thorough property condition report for each tenancy which involves taking hundreds of photos and completing a detailed written report. Your insurance may become invalid if inspections are not carried out at least once every three months. Regular inspections and setting a high expectation of the tenant encourages responsible behaviour. RENT ARREARS — Rent needs to be checked on the due date and action taken immediately if it falls into arrears. This can even happen with a previously reliable tenant due to sudden loss of income from redundancy or illness. Arrears are most likely to occur in the holiday period when most people are not thinking about
DAVID GRAHAM PRINCIPAL | QUINOVIC VIADUCT
their rental property and are on holiday themselves. Timely and professional action is essential to ensure appropriate redress before the debt mounts. BREAKING FIXED-TERM TENANCIES — Approximately 20% of fixed term tenancies will be broken at the request of the tenant. We have seen so many examples of self-managers letting tenants off their tenancies and making generous, unnecessary concessions that inevitably result in significant vacancies. If managed professionally, a new tenancy should be started with no loss of rent, and secure terms covering expenses such as advertising, credit checks and a new property condition report contained in the outgoing tenancy agreement. SELECTION OF TENANT — Tenants with adverse rental or credit history will not even consider approaching Quinovic properties because they know they will be extensively vetted and will be unsuccessful. Self-managers are at much higher risk of attracting unsuitable tenants because they don’t use reference databases. High quality tenants often prefer to rent through a professional property manager as they know they will receive a professional level of service. INADEQUATE DOCUMENTATION — The standard Building and Housing Tenancy Agreement is non-specific and misses a number of important issues that should be provided for in your tenancy agreement. Proper documentation should be used for all records, including the initial tenancy agreement, records of inspections, records of variations and extensions to the tenancy, and proper notice given at the end of a tenancy. Is it really worth the risk and stress? Words: David Graham

LET’S DOUBLE THE QUOTA!
CHASING DOWN UNSCRUPULOUS LENDERS
A couple of months ago, after massive pressure from the community, the government adopted my members bill to increase the refugee quota from 750 places per year to 1000. The quota had not been raised since 1987 but the increase is simply not enough to ensure that we, as a country, could say that we are meeting our international obligations and doing our fair share.
The National government brought in a series of law changes last year to help consumers make better informed decisions when borrowing, and to reduce predatory lending practices.
124 BUSINESS/ EDUCATION & SOCIETY Aug 2016
We are currently facing the biggest humanitarian crisis since World War Two with roughly 60 million people worldwide who have fled their homes and counties to avoid war or persecution. For the number of refugees we take per capita we rank towards the bottom of the league tables. The 250 increase hardly shifts that. We should and could be doing more — and we have to ensure that the wonderful local services we have in place to settle refugees are not stretched beyond their capacity. I’ve visited refugees at the settlement centre in Mangere and without exception the families — especially the children — were exceptionally grateful for chance to create a new life in our safe and stable country. Those lucky enough to be chosen to come to NZ have usually spent many years in transit at camps before getting here. The relief when they get here is palpable. We could and should be doing more. We should double the quota and treble the funding. Refugees don’t stay refugees. They become New Zealanders, contributing to our economy and, as happens in Auckland, becoming part of the vibrant fabric of our multicultural city. Their children grow up and contribute too - which is exactly what happened with our current Prime Minister - his mother was a refugee. But we need to keep in mind that when we double the quota, we also need to fund refugee resettlement services accordingly. Red Cross do a good job with what they’re given, but they’re only funded to support a limited time of resettlement — after that initial resettlement period — it is the migrant centres, migrant services and multicultural associations that provide the support. When we double the quota, we need to triple the funding given to the sector and make sure that it’s given out fairly across the entirety of the resettlement process rather than frontloading it at the start.
I saw a glaring example of the sort of problems we face early last year on a visit to financial providers in the South Auckland suburb of Manurewa. I spotted an advertisement for an iPhone 5, worth around $800, advertised as $59 a week for 100 weeks. In a free world we can’t stop people paying too much for things, but we can help consumers make informed choices to protect them from irresponsible lending practices. Real social problems are caused by some unscrupulous truck shop operators and payday lenders. So the first step is to change laws where appropriate. To meet their responsible lending obligations, provided for in the legislative changes last year, lenders are now expected to include the total amount payable under the agreement when referring to regular repayments for a particular term loan. There are many other obligations. It is one thing to toughen the law, but it needs to be properly enforced. The Commerce Commission has been active in this area in the past year, and we’ve seen a number of truck shop operators taken through the courts and fined. I was pleased that Budget 2016 delivered extra resources to the commission to carry that battle further. In addition to effective legislation and proper enforcement, the long-term challenge is to improve financial capability in the wider community. This involves government as well as the private and voluntary sector. The Commission for Financial Capability is responsible for the national strategy to improve financial capability. It manages and supports programmes such as those tailored for Maori and Pasifika communities, including those through the Tamaki Regeneration Company.
New Zealand used to have a reputation as a world leader, but our shameful rank of 90th per capita for refugee resettlement damages not only our international reputation but who we fundamentally our as a country. It’s time to double the quota.
Efforts are underway to redesign face-to-face budgeting services, to help build the levels of financial capability among the thousands of New Zealanders who engage with government budgeting services.

IS YOUR PC HEALTHY? 125 BUSINESS/ EDUCATION & SOCIETY Aug 2016
You have your car serviced, get regular dental checkups and visit the doctor. But do you ever consider the state of your desk or laptop computer? They constantly move air through the cooling system and accumulate dust. This results in an overheating computer that could harm the electronics. It can even shut down the computer in the middle of that long (unsaved) document. The other health check your computer needs is updated software and keeping the files tidy and uncluttered.
I am writing this from Noosa, Australia. It is 29 degrees, the hottest July day on record, and this is winter! Wow! Monday we return to Auckland where I am sure it will be cold and wintry, so on with the warmer clothes. The rental market here in Brisbane is down — rents are being reduced and properties are not renting. There are so many new apartments being built here, there are cranes everywhere, and it’s absolute overkill. Renters are in short supply. School holidays have made it a quiet couple of weeks in Auckland. August is a special time at Just Rentals for the first day of the month is the birthday of my twin and I. We shall celebrate, of course. How the years fly by faster as each one passes. It will be Christmas in no time, too. When we think of Christmas, we think of candles, and we must remember how dangerous they can be if not supervised. We’ve heard of serious fires caused by unattended candles which have burnt down houses and even killed people. We know tenants do light these candles and we can only hope that they are vigilant in making sure that they are all put out before they go to bed or leave the premises. Tenants must have contents insurance to cover themselves in circumstances like this. Landlords have insurance for their property, and you must have insurance for yours. Well, another hot day is forecast for tomorrow, so we shall make the most of it as the next day we return to winter in Auckland. Good renting, Sylvia Lund, Director
Antivirus and Window software needs to be kept current to the latest versions. Does yours need attention? We can do all this for you with a health check. With a little bit of TLC, you will find that you have a cooler, quicker computer. IS YOUR PC BEAUTIFUL? If not, then consider upgrading to a stylish new case. I can provide a range of styles and colours to match your environment. Arctic white cases for the modern home or mini-sized machines that tuck away out of sight. There are a multitude of colours to choose from too. Gamers may prefer something exotic but portable or futuristic and large for all those mods. I still build PC’s to order. This is a popular service and I can build a computer specifically to suit your needs and budget. Simple PC’s just for light work and more powerful gaming computers. I can also build high-end PC’s for media work and graphic design.
