Editors’ Notes
Fran Ninow Co-editor200 issues in 200 words – a tall task if ever there was one. When Jude and I embarked on our Verve journey, global warming was seldom mentioned, and AI lived solely in the realm of science fiction. Harry Potter was still a thing, and the word covid hadn't entered our lexicon. How the world has changed in just 200 issues, and how Verve has evolved. What you see before you is a beautiful magazine, all grown up, and one of our finest yet.
Of course 200 issues have seen inevitable changes to the makers and creators of Verve – mental, spiritual and most definitely physical – but one thing that’s remained the same is our unwavering passion for crafting this compendium of designerly lifestyle and local nuggets. A passion shared equally by our advertisers and readers. Emily Savitz, one of our recent interns, aptly summed up this spirit of togetherness when she wrote: “The community you guys have at Verve is amazing.” I couldn’t agree more.
In closing, huge thanks to our exceptional team members - Yamin, Arna, Jamie, Pam, Dani, Chris and, above all, Jude, for your enduring awesomeness, and devotion to Verve.
We’re thrilled to continue this journey with you all as we embark on the next 200 issues, sparking beautiful Verve joy. Watch this space for some exciting new developments.
Fran xx Jude Mitchell Co-editorAs Fran and I celebrate our 200th issue, taking centre stage is a celebration of the Best in Beauty – an exquisite compilation meticulously curated by our star and beauty editor, Dani.
With Dani’s keen eye for detail and unrelenting passion, she has compiled a collection of beauty products and treatments that epitomise elegance and sophistication. Thanks Dani!
Our 200th issue is a significant milestone representing 20 years of a wonderful business partnership. And what better way to celebrate than with an August issue that showcases femininity and empowers women. Thanks, Fran, for being my business partner – trust has made this partnership last for so long. And thanks to the rest of the Verve team, Arna, Yamin, and Jamie, and to our readers – enjoy this stunning issue.

Danielle Feneridis Beauty EditorWelcome to the August issue! Most importantly, congratulations to Jude and Fran for a remarkable milestone – Verve’s 200th issue. This is truly a testament to their dedication to design, beauty, fashion, and lifestyle. It’s been an inspiration working alongside them both so far.
Beauty is such an evolving industry and this year’s Best in Beauty edition has been an exciting team effort that I hope you all enjoy reading as much as we’ve loved curating. I find that having something to work towards or look forward to in winter helps those midyear slumps and this has been my motivation for the past few months.
Wherever you are around the world while reading this, here's to Fran and Jude’s journey of 200 unforgettable issues! Stay tuned for more Beauty by Verve
Happy reading, Dani x
In Short
Verve’s monthly round up of what’s new, interesting, and happening… in a paragraph!
Mile High Grub
It’s certainly the most inventive way of improving upon a Michelin-starred meal that we’ve heard of – by serving it in space! Céleste is a sky-high concept collaboration by world-renowned Parisbased architect Joseph Dirand and luxury space travel company Zephalto that plans to send the public on a lowcarbon galactic voyage as early as 2024 – and bookings are open now! Céleste is the name of the first spacecraft, which is not a rocket but an elegant, pressurised capsule that will rise to the stars suspended beneath a stratospheric balloon. “We wanted the experience to feel residential, not like a spacecraft,” Dirand tells Architectural Digest. “It had to be extremely pure and humble.” The 6-hour flights will rise 25km above the Earth and cost around $209,000.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Back in March, Finland was named the world’s happiest country by the World Happiness Report for the not-too-shabby sixth year in a row, with Aotearoa placing a respectable 10th place. But you don’t need to move to Lapland to move up the rankings, just follow the advice of happiness professionals such as psychology expert Stella Grizont, founder and CEO of Woopaah, which focuses on workplace wellbeing, who tells Time that life satisfaction comes from “being true to yourself and all the emotions that come up”. Eighteen experts were interviewed and though not all agreed on all the secrets to happiness, common habits included socialising at least once weekly and pursuing hobbies such as art, music, and cooking 5-6 times per week. Spending time in nature, meditating and exercising were also key. Recently published book The Good Life included research that followed 700 people since 1938 and concluded strong relationships to be “intrinsic to everything we do and everything we are”.
Gut Feeling
Research recently published in the National Institute of Aging found a link between the condition of our gut microbiome – a collection of microscopic organisms like bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites that reside in our intestines – and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The significance of the relationship between our brains and bellies has been long known, with the gut providing around 90% of our body’s serotonin which is responsible for regulating the likes of sleep, mood, and digestion. Our stomachs even have their own nervous system – the enteric system – leading them to be known as our bodies’ ‘second brain’. “It can function completely independent of the brain,” Purna Kashyap, professor of medicine and physiology at the Mayo Clinic, tells National Geographic. “If I were to just cut out your entire intestine and put it on the table, it would still move.” Our gut microbiome, one of five major bodily microbiomes (along with skin, respiratory, mouth, and urogenital), should be supported by eating a diet rich in veggies, legumes, whole grains, fermented and prebiotic foods. Breastfeeding for at least six months has also been shown to boost babies’ gut health.
Fudgey Fun
Inspired by becoming sick of seeing perfect food cooked and presented perfectly, the Fudgey Wudgey Chef has attracted a sizeable social media following by keeping it real in her kitchen. The Auckland chef – who has no culinary training and grew up in a household with a mother who’s a terrible cook “sorry mum!” – is the antihero the online culinary world needs, creating no-nonsense, mainly vegetarian dishes (“protein’s too expensive!”) from whatever’s in the freezer and pantry: think the likes of rice and frozen veggies. The irreverent videos are shot in a very normal – if at times chaotic – kitchen using lots of quick cuts, dramatic camera angles and amusing special effects and voiceovers. Expect much ingredient abuse like veggies dropped into pans from great heights, and condiment bottles and onions used for tenpin bowling – you have been warned! Search out the foodie fun on TikTok

Shining Solo
Parenting is possibly the toughest of jobs for even the most organised and capable of folk, but for those doing it alone it can feel twice (at least!) the workload. Very Well Family’s five tips for single parenthood including setting clear goals, being well organised, being both firm and flexible, and not being afraid to ask for help. Twenty percent of Kiwi families have a single parent, some of whom were recently surveyed by the Mako Mama Single Parents Project. The report, which interviewed more than 3,500 solo parents – mainly mothers – found that nearly seven out of 10 low-income single mums had been treated unfairly, experiencing discrimination which had affected areas of their lives such as housing or unemployment. A third of Pacific mothers also said that they had difficulty in accessing things needed to feel connected to their culture while four out of 10 were struggling to afford healthy food and clothes. The project recommended setting up a portal that listed all of parents’ entitlements in one place, greater access to childcare subsidies and better training for those dealing with the parents.
Midwives Miffed No More
Kiwi midwives have long been considered among the best in the world –though the pay has not always reflected their training leading many to either quit or seek employment across the ditch where their wages – and even conditions – are better. News of the 15% pay increase for more than 1,150 midwives employed by Te Whatu Ora – along with a $3,000 lump sum and graduate starting rate of nearly $73,000 – will hopefully go some way to rectifying the exodus which as resulted in a 40% shortage. Co-leader of the midwifery union MERAS, Caroline Conroy, says that though there are still some outstanding issues to resolve, the pay equity deal – five years in the making – “pleased most midwives”.
Alison Eddy, chief executive of the New Zealand College of Midwives, echoes those sentiments, but says that though midwives now feel more valued, there’s still urgent work needed to be done to attract more talent to the industry.

Urban Tent
This light and whimsical design for an apartment above an art gallery is not only a treasure trove of fascinating artefacts, but also represents a pioneering model for a new way of living in Johannesburg’s changing urban landscape.

The Everard Read Gallery is designed around a series of courtyards filled with trees, and has skylights that let lovely light into its rooms. Mark and Christine Read, the second generation of Reads to run the gallery, had reached a point in their lives when they wanted to “downscale and live lightly” as Christine puts it. Rather than move to a smaller house or an apartment nearby, they began toying with the idea of
“living above the shop”. It made sense considering the city’s traffic congestion and urban sprawl.
Christine has kept to a neutral palette, occasionally bringing out blue, green and pink found in the glass beads and other objects. There’s a coffee table made from railways sleepers (opposite page), their first acquisition together more than 30 years ago.
The main living area is enveloped in thick Canadian oak, which cocoons the space and creates a sense of intimacy. It opens to a double volume space above the living area, high and light and airy. “Most important was maximum light at any time,” says Christine.
A delicate steel staircase against the wall has a balustrade inspired by willow branches. The furnishings are an eclectic
mix, which the light, open tent-like space easily accommodates. They range from an antique Indian chest to hand-carved side tables and wing-back armchair, cosily combined with contemporary couches.
In front of the fireplace, the pair of green velvet chairs belonged to Christine’s mother 40 years ago.
Because of the linearity of the apartment's design, says Christine, “the TV room is essentially a passage”. It can, however, be screened off with sliding wooden doors. When not in use, the TV is concealed in a cabinet. The blue denim sofas are soft and comfortable, encouraging informal, feet-up relaxation. They’re easily combined with a hand-

carved Senufo bed used as a coffee table and hand-carved side tables. The main en suite bedroom at the end of the apartment is plush and carpeted. Instead of built-in cupboard doors, Christine opted for linen curtains, which soften the edges of the room and also screen off the bathroom area.
“The thought of 14 metres of linen was daunting, so I took it to a friend to dip in ink so its feet were in a dark colour,” says Christine.
The main bathroom is a neutral cocoon of wood and white, with its own woodburning stove for chilly winter nights. Shuttered stacking doors close off the floor-to-ceiling windows for privacy when necessary, but opening onto a deck with an outdoor shower that “tiptoes” between the vaulted skylights of the gallery below. Second Life
After enduring the floods of January this year, Refined Living , has been able to open the doors to its newly repaired and beautifully refurbished showrooms.
Verve had the privilege of speaking with owners Tracey and Matt Johnson about their renovation journey.
Can you share with us the most significant challenges you faced during the restoration process, and how you overcome them?
The cleanup and renovation process were long and drawn out due to the ongoing poor weather. It made waterproofing the back of the building and getting the interior bricks dry very challenging. There were also delays sourcing building materials.
Refined Living has always been a symbol of sophistication. How did you ensure that the newly renovated showrooms maintain the essence of the brand while incorporating fresh elements?
We’ve maintained the heritage elegance of the building by restoring the brick walls, adding waterproofing throughout, and all central pillars have been repaired as well. Also, we’ve removed the fireplace to give the showroom a feeling of space.
With the rainstorm's impact still fresh in everyone's minds, how did you implement measures to safeguard the showrooms against potential future natural disasters?
The building has undergone extensive waterproofing and large floodgates will be installed at the front of the building for any significant future weather events. Auckland City Council need to ensure that they are investing in better drainage for the entire Auckland region.
Can you give us a sneak peek into any new partnerships or unique pieces that will be showcased in the refreshed showrooms?
The store is full of new collections on display, and we’re about to visit Artwood in Sweden to source further new product lines. New styles are always being sourced to broaden the collections for the clientele.
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for Refined Living in the post-renovation era, and how do you envision its continued growth and impact on the home and design community?
We’re looking forward to a more settled period; the flood, cleanup and renovations were stressful for all involved. We’re delighted to be back in our beautiful space with so many stunning collections on offer. Our intention is that customers can combine our products to create a variety of interior styles from our brands.
As the heart and soul of Refined Living, how do you hope visitors will feel when they step into the newly revived showrooms, and what impression would you like them to take away from the experience?
Customers can expect to be wowed, the space is so light and bright. Chandeliers and pendants sparkle, and the furniture, textiles and accessories collections are vast. Our team in store are friendly, knowledgeable, and their customer service is exceptional. We really hope clients feel happy and inspired when they visit.

LIQUID BLUSH SUN KISS
Sun-kissed cheeks have been essential in many makeup routines. A popular way of achieving this tinted look is by applying liquid blush. Liquid blushes tend to stay longer than powder blush making them more practical for an everyday makeup look. It gives off far more of a natural tint, resulting in people applying the product on more than just their cheeks. The sun-kissed look is primarily achieved by forming a W-shape across the face. Applying the blush starting from the corner of your eye, sweeping down to the centre of the cheek, over the bridge of your nose and back up to the opposite eye, gives you a W-shape. While this may seem like a lot of products, the lightweight and hydrating features of liquid blush allow for a subtle yet staple makeup look. The most prominent liquid blushes we’re seeing right now are Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, Charlotte Tilbury Matte Beauty Blush, and Wand Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Liquid Lip Blush.
LIP OILS
The transition from sticky lip glosses to nourishing lip oils has been a global trend throughout the past year. Those who wear lip gloss often find themselves not receiving longlasting effects and are left with dry lips once the shine wears off. The feeling of having moisturised lips for longer without having to constantly be reapplying products is attracting many consumers. Some of the most popular lip oil products currently on the market are DIOR Lip Glow Oil, Clarins Lip Comfort Oil, Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss, and Merit Shade Slick. Many lip oils can be worn under or on top of lipstick without smudging or removing colour. However, the variety in lip oil colour and pigment allows consumers to wear it just as is.

TINTED SUNSCREENS
While wearing SPF is always necessary, tinted sunscreens just give you another reason to apply it, allowing everyday light tint coverage while protecting against UV rays. Non-tinted sunscreens leave a residue behind making it harder to apply with makeup. Tinted SPF can be used under foundation and concealer or simply on its own. Ilia’s Super Serum Skin, EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 46, and La Roche-Posay’s Athelios Mineral Tined
Sunscreen are three products trending. Some dermatologists say those prone to hyperpigmentation should wear a tinted sunscreen that contains iron oxide to potentially see positive results. When looking to purchase a tinted sunscreen, it’s best to look for broadspectrum products, which help against skin damage related to ageing.
RED LIGHT THERAPY
Red light therapy is currently a popular treatment for skin health. Several skin benefits result from red light therapy. The most common effect is improvement in healing acne, wounds, or damaged skin. The anti-ageing and inflammation reduction benefits are also quite incredible. Completing this treatment a few times a week will allow for the best results. Some say they see results within the first month. Overall, red light therapy is great for improving skin appearance.

THE BEAUTY OF PARIS
WALK US THROUGH YOUR MORNING AND NIGHT SKINCARE ROUTINE. Mornings I cleanse with Emma Lewisham and moisturise with Maryse, two locally made brands I adore. I top up with Elta MD sunblock, which has a tint for a little coverage. I smudge RMS Spell on my lips and eyelids, and I'm ready to go.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO SELF-CARE ACTIVITY?
I go on big morning walks around the water with my daughter. I’m not very good at sitting still and meditating so this is my way of finding peace before I start my day. I try to fit a pilates session in when I can too! I spoil myself with acupuncture and osteopath body work, these treatments keep me feeling relaxed and balanced. All a form of self-love, I guess!
At night, I use Emma Lewisham's Supernatural Sleeping Mask twice per week before bed. I use a Mara retinol from Ines Store, too. We drink a lot of fresh ginger tea every night, they say ginger improves skin elasticity and evens skin tone. I think the amount of tea I drink has a positive effect on my skin.
WHAT PLATFORMS OR PUBLICATIONS DO YOU USE TO KEEP UP WITH BEAUTY CONTENT?
Verve of course! I love supporting local beauty brands and really look to them for guidance. Brands like Sans, Abel, Tronque, and, as I mentioned earlier, Emma Lewisham and Maryse. I wholeheartedly trust my friends at Ines, they’re always keeping me clued up with skincare via their EDMs.
ANY BEAUTY ADVICE?
As Mum always taught me, moisturise as much as you can, and use sunblock!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE BEAUTY TREATMENT YOU LOOK FORWARD TO?
I adore Clinic 42 and have had an IPL treatment there that helped me with some pigmentation I experienced after pregnancy. I wouldn't say it's relaxing, but it's been effective.

IN SHORT
SLEEK HAIR LOOK
The effortless ‘wet hair’ is the look we’ve been seeing several celebrities pull off for events. But how do we achieve this hairstyle at home? The key to this look is to use the right products and place them correctly. Focus on applying product from the roots of your hair to around the ear. Once you wash or wet your hair, be sure not to completely dry it. Make sure when brushing that you brush straight back and don’t create a parting. Then apply a gel or a hair cream. R+Co Motorcycle Felixble Gel, Moroccanoil Texture Clay, and Drybar are all popular products. Following this, apply hair oil over the top. Some recommended hair oils are OUAI and Moroccanoil Treatment. Comb through the hair one final time and set with hair spray. Drybar Triple 3-in1 Finishing Spray and Color Wow Style on Steroids Texture Finishing Spray are two highly rated products. This is the perfect, edgy look for a night out.
CAFFEINE EYE CREAM
Who wouldn’t want to wake up without puffiness and dark circles? Caffeine eye creams have been many consumers' solutions to achieving this. Caffeine is a natural antioxidant that helps to reduce inflation. The caffeine actively lessens the appearance of blood vessels around the eyes, creating a less puffy look. Buyers have been raving over The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG, La Roche-Posey Redermic R Eye Retinol Cream and Clique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage. Many of these products have anti-ageing benefits, reducing wrinkles. It’s best to apply them in the morning before sunscreen and other serums.
ICE ROLLERS
Beauty tools for treating puffiness and inflammation have become increasingly popular. Ice rolling specifically is all the rave. These simple depuffing tools are easy to use straight out of the freezer. They increase blood circulation and reduce redness. Getting puffy while travelling is the worst, but because ice-rollers come in all sizes they're easy enough to throw in bag while on the go. Ice rolling helps with lymphatic drainage and headaches. Esaror, Vanity Planet Revive Professional, and StackedSkincare ice rollers are the most popular.

THE BEAUTY OF YUKA
SOME HEALTH AND BEAUTY TIPS FROM YUKA O’SHANNESSY, THE CO-FOUNDER AND FORMER CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF ASTUTE ASSEMBLY, NOW DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RECORD LTD.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO UNWIND AFTER A BUSY DAY?
Having nice meals with my loved ones, family and friends. I also love taking a moment to relax on my favourite spot of couch, having a cup tea with some treats and watching a movie.
WHICH INGREDIENTS DO YOU TRY TO AVOID IN SKINCARE OR MAKEUP PRODUCTS?
Alcohol-based products, and ingredients that react badly with women’s hormones. My sister is a dermatologist and when I visited her new clinic in Tokyo last year, she told me not to wash my skin too strongly and that it’s better to gently wash with a foaming cleanser. The stress of rubbing your skin breaks your skin cells which will make darker patches. I don’t take much time for skincare myself and probably washed my face too quickly and strongly! After this advice, I try to be more gentle.
WHAT PRODUCTS CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?
Concealer and black eyeliner. I’m coming to an age where I need to focus on a good covering.
WHAT IMPORTANT LESSON HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THE FASHION WORLD THAT YOU APPLY TO YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE?
I read an article by Comme des Garson’s designer, Rei Kawakubo once – she explained that she wears her favourite clothes in the season in a sequence, wearing the same outfit day after day. This is the only way she can understand the silhouette of clothes that suits her best and this routine gives her trained eyes. So, from this ethos, I’ve learned that you need to know what’s best for yourself and be intuitive for your style.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE ABOUT CARVING OUT TIME IN THEIR BUSY SCHEDULE FOR SELFCARE?
Honestly, I’m not sure this question is relevant for me as my business keeps me so busy, I’m not the best at carving out time for myself! But I do try to make time for myself a few times a day, doing little things that I love. I try to treat myself by going to my favourite coffee shop in the morning to start my day, taking walks with my dog, catching up with people I love, and taking a minute to unwind at the end of my day.

THE ART OF EYEBROW DESIGN
FOR PERMANENT MAKEUP
Our faces are our primary visual cues for communicating, the eyes being the first point of connection. By defining and adjusting the brow, we're clarifying and animating the messages we are conveying. With the advent of permanent makeup (PMU), achieving the perfect eyebrow design has become more accessible than ever. Let's explore the art behind it.
EYEBROW DESIGN
Designing the perfect eyebrows involves an in-depth understanding of skin types and identifying the appropriate PMU application to undertake. A skilled PMU artist will assess your face shape, bone structure, natural brow hair growth, and symmetry to create a design that enhances your beauty. Factors such as arch height, brow thickness, and tail length are considered to achieve a balanced and flattering appearance. Collaborating with your artist is essential to achieving your desired look and ensuring you’re both on the same page.
EYEBROW SHAPE
Your eyes are your messengers therefore your brow shape can have a significant impact on self-expression. Some popular eyebrow shapes to play with include:
1. Soft Arch: a gentle, natural arch that follows the natural curve of the brow bone. Soft and feminine and by far the most popular.
2. High Arch: a more pronounced arch that creates a lifted and defined
appearance. Often conveys elegance and sophistication but can appear a little surprised or startled with poor application.
3. S traight Brows: known for its modern and youthful appearance, can help create a calm, balanced, and slightly intense look.
4. S-Shaped Brows: have a slight arch near the beginning and a deeper arch towards the tail. A unique, striking look for the daring.
Your eyebrow shape should complement your facial features and personal style. Your PMU artist will determine the most suitable shape based on your preferences and facial characteristics.
EYEBROW COLOUR
The right colour is crucial in achieving a natural, seamless look. It should sit in harmony with your hair colour, skin tone, and personality.
Key considerations:
1. Hair Colour Match: for a natural appearance, it's generally recommended to match the colour of your permanent eyebrows closely to your hair colour. Shade and undertones should complement each other.
2. Skin Tone: warm skin undertones pair well with slightly cooler brown shades, while cooler undertones benefit from warmer shades. One of the best ways to determine your undertone is to look at the veins inside your wrists. If they're
blue or purple, you have a cool undertone. Green means a warm undertone. Can’t tell the difference? You probably have a neutral undertone.
3. Age: As we age, our hair density and eyebrow colour may change. Opting for a shade lighter than your natural hair colour can create a more youthful, subtle effect.
Your PMU artist may swab a few colour options onto your forehead to determine the best match. Their expert knowledge in colour theory will guide you towards the perfect hue.
Conclusion
By carefully considering eyebrow design, shape, and colour, you can achieve a bespoke, natural look that complements your unique features and style. Select a skilled and experienced PMU artist who can inform you of the treatments most suitable to your skin type, to ensure that you achieve the eyebrows you've dreamed of. DDRY SHAMPOO
Dry shampoo contains oil-absorbing ingredients that help soak up excess oil that comes from the scalp and hair. Washing hair too frequently can strip the natural oils from the scalp, causing too much oil production. Dry shampoo allows for a freshly shampooed look without having to wash the hair. CCERAMIDES
Ceramides are a type of fatty acid called lipids, lying in the outermost layer of the skin. By protecting the skin’s barrier, they lock in moisture and prevent dryness, as well as protect against environmental irritants. Appling moisturiser and pairing it with hyaluronic acid will help replenish the ceramides.

ILLUMINATOR
Beauty products designed to add your preferred amount of glow

A naturally occurring antioxidant that is very potent in our bodies. It helps to neutralise free radicals that have caused damage to the skin cells. Coenzyme Q10 is involved with cellular energy production, which supports the overall vitality of the skin. It is used in lotions, creams, and serums. Typically combined with vitamin C.
RETINOL
A type of vitamin A found in many skincare products, commonly used to support anti-ageing, and treat acne. The anti-ageing benefits come from its ability to increase the rate at which new cells form, helping to minimise the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It regulates oil production and unclogs pores preventing breakouts. It’s important to note that retinol can heighten skin’s sensitivity to the sun, increasing the risk of sun
SSPF
Sun protection factor (SPF) measures how well a sunscreen protects the skin from UV rays. Most SPF products range from 15 to 50+. Using an SPF of at least 30 will block out 97% of UVB rays. No sunscreen can 100% guarantee skin protection.
TTONER
A liquid product that is used to balance out the skin’s pH level after cleansing. Toners help with hydration, minimising pores, and prepping the skin for other products. X-FOLIATE!
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This creates a smoother and brighter complexion. There are two main methods of exfoliation. One is physical exfoliants that physically scrub off dead skin cells. This can consist of facial scrubs, brushes, or exfoliating devices. Chemical exfoliants use acids and enzymes to help decrease the bonds between dead skin cells.

Smoother & More Confident You!
Finesse Face and Body Clinic is proud to be the first truSculpt iD provider in New Zealand, as part of an exclusive partnership with Cutera.
TruSculpt iD is the latest technology available to permanently and non-invasively remove body fat. “We have been leaders in non-invasive cellulite and body contouring treatments in Auckland for 20 years,” says Sue Crake, owner of the Remuera Salon.
How does truSculpt iD work?
truSculpt iD uses a unique form of monopolar radio frequency energy that penetrates evenly and deeply and is able to treat deep into the entire fat pad - from skin to muscle. Once the applicators have been placed on target fatty areas, heat is dispersed evenly, causing irreparable damage to the fat cell walls which the body metabolises and removes permanently over the next 12 weeks. Real-time temperature control and monitoring sensors ensure a constant and therapeutic temperature is maintained for 10 minutes ensuring maximum fat disruption, resulting in 24% fat reduction with every treatment. Patient comfort is ensured through the highly engineered skin adhesives and temperature control which keeps the skin cooler than the underlying fat.
How is truSculpt iD treatment performed?
The initial consultation is performed to assess and discuss your concerns and desired aesthetic goals, then a tailored and customised treatment plan will be created. A total of six handpieces can be used per 15-minute treatment, and multiple areas can be treated on the same day. Once medical consent is completed skin adhesives are attached to the skin overlying the fat pocket followed by the handsfree applicators. The treatment area is wrapped in a cummerbund to minimise movement of handpieces during treatment. After 15 minutes of warmth is distributed into the tissue, the adhesives, handpieces and cummerbund are removed and the patient can return to normal activities.
How do I know if I am a candidate?
truSculpt iD is the latest in non-invasive fat removal procedures in minimising treatment time, maximising results and comfort whilst reducing downtime (there is none!). truSculpt iD is a great treatment for targeting stubborn fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise, or for a more global debulking option. truSculpt iD is not restricted by BMI or skin laxity concerns, making it a great alternative to cryotherapies. To learn more about if you’re a suitable candidate, book a free consultation with Sue at Finesse.
How many treatments will I need?
Your initial assessment and personal goals will determine the best course of treatment tailored to you, however patients will only require one treatment. Whether one or two treatments are required, all patients will see an effect at 12 weeks.
Is the treatment painful?
No! Patients report the treatment feels like getting into a hot bath. The heat at first can be a little intense, but just like a bath you become accustomed to the feeling and adjust to the treatment. There is no pain, no downtime and no massage required. Patients can return to normal activities immediately after with most patients only experiences some mild redness on the treatment zone which subsides in a couple of hours.
How long before I see my results?
Clients will begin to see a change in their silhouette from 6 – 8 weeks post treatment, but maximum results are achieved at week 12. Changes in skin quality, tone and texture are usually seen earlier. Each area can be treated once per 12-weeks but other areas can be treated before then.

THE BEAUTY OF GEORGIA
Georgia shares her abode with her husband Nicolas, an artist, as well as their daughter Hazel and their loyal canine companion, Vito. When not jetting off for modeling assignments, Georgia and Nicolas can be found diligently working together in their shared studio. It is within this creative space that Georgia focuses on her brand, Hilda Ereaut.
Additionally, they cherish their time spent in Vermont, where they own a cozy cabin nestled in the tranquil woods. Looking ahead, they eagerly anticipate the forthcoming summer in New Zealand.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO SELF-CARE ACTIVITY?
At the moment I’m traveling a lot for modeling work while also being a new mum and running my own business so I have to be crafty about self care and fit it in whenever and wherever I can. My number one will always be a hot bath before bed, but lately I’ve been choosing to walk to our studio and that’s something I’m really enjoying.
WALK US THROUGH YOUR MORNING AND NIGHT SKINCARE ROUTINE.
I am pretty basic with my skincare because so much product gets put on me at work and although I don’t have sensitive skin, I’m prone to breakouts. In the morning I begin with Neostrata oily solution toner, followed by Emma Lewisham Skin reset & eye cream, Khiels Ultra face cream and then Elta MD sunscreen. The evening is IsClinical active Serum and Emma Lewisham night cream. If I’m traveling or my skin needs a boost I love Activist botanical hydrating serum.
WHAT PLATFORMS DO YOU USE TO KEEP UP WITH BEAUTY CONTENT?
I’m lazy at keeping up with beauty news but then I get the best product updates and tricks direct from the makeup chair at work.
ANY BEAUTY ADVICE?
When it comes to skincare keep it simple and consistent, It doesn’t have to cost a lot to be effective
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE BEAUTY TREATMENT YOU LOOK FORWARD TO?
I love hydrafacials with light therapy and I try my hardest to get regular bodywork to help reduce the toll that my job and traveling takes on my body.

CLINIC 42
At Clinic 42, you’ll only find a small range of products as doctors Ellen, Joanna, and Lynn conduct a meticulous selection process. This ensures patients are offered products with the purest, highest potency active ingredients. And, as medical practitioners, they have access to exclusive ranges that you won’t find at your local beautician, ensuring patients get powerful results with products that really pack a punch.
The Clinic 42 doctors have the experience and clinical knowledge to assess the science behind a product and determine whether it will deliver on its claims. They also go as far as trying each product on their own skin. The clinic doesn’t stock the full range of each brand but instead focuses on hand-picking the best from each brand and all three doctors must agree for a product to be selected to join the Clinic 42 skincare range. With three different skin types and perspectives, their comprehensive selection process guarantees only the most outstanding products are offered to patients.
iS Clinical is a botanical range offering clean and innovative, multitasking
products. After being introduced to the brand, Dr Lynn purchased the products with her own money –something she hasn’t done in over 20 years! Within a few short weeks her skin became noticeably smoother, firmer and plumper. In fact, her results were so profound, she stopped wearing makeup! Dr Lynn is passionate about iS Clinical and after a vigorous selection process by all three doctors, they chose to start by stocking four key products from the range.
iS Clinical’s luxurious Youth Intensive Crème is the ultimate, multi-tasking travel companion, especially for minimalists looking to have less steps in their skincare routine. With a potent combination of hyaluronic acid, growth factors and vitamin A and C, this is a one-and-done product that gives 24hour hydration whilst firming the skin and providing antioxidant protection.
Youth Eye Complex smooths, hydrates and illuminates with a powerful yet gentle formulation that clinically targets fine lines around the eye with visible results seen in just 30 days!
Neckperfect Complex is designed specifically for the neck, jawline and décolletage area with a combination of extremely potent antioxidants, fruit acids and rice protein to lift, tighten and sculpt.
And to nourish, hydrate and protect, Youth Body Serum is a lightweight refreshing mist that quickly absorbs into the skin, providing rich hydration and leaving the skin feeling silky smooth.
iS Clinical perfectly complements Clinic 42’s other carefully selected skincare products from Synergie, Environ and Zo. For results-driven skincare, tailored to your specific needs and concerns, book in for a consultation at Clinic 42 on 09 638 4242, or speak to your practitioner at your next appointment.

BITE SIZED BEAUTY TRENDS
IN SHORT
NEEM OIL
For thousands of years, neem oil has been used for health and medical purposes in India and is now highly admired worldwide. The fatty acids and antioxidants that exist in the oil help with skin healing and boosting immunity. The herbalbased oil comes from the neem tree, a symbol of good health in Southeast Asia. Many people use neem oil to treat acne as it regulates oil in the skin, helping treat breakouts. The oil’s high amounts of vitamin C stimulate collagen production, and it also boasts anti-ageing properties.
THE ‘NO MAKEUP’ LOOK
The full glam makeup looks haven’t been as popular recently. We’re seeing more of a natural or less-is-more makeup looks. The amount of product used is very minimal. A lot of what goes into this look is the skin prep before applying any makeup. Moisturising and priming the skin adds to the glowy appearance in a more natural way. Once your skin is prepped, use light coverage foundation or concealer. Maybe try to use a skin tint rather than a heavy foundation. Tinted moisturisers or sunscreens are other great substitutions. Cream or liquid blush will be your best friend for this look, giving a subtle hint of colour. Finally, finish with light eye makeup. Applying mascara to only the top lashes gives a natural look. This makeup routine is good for going from the day to night look, so it’s very versatile.
COLLAGEN PEPTIDES
Collagen peptide supplements are nothing new, however, we’re seeing an increase in products in the beauty market. Not only does collagen support joint and gut health, but it also benefits the skin, nails and hair. Taking collagen supplements helps to hydrate the skin. It supports anti-ageing and skin damage repair. Many consumers have seen growth and strengthening within their hair and nails after consistently taking collagen peptides. You can either take collagen through a powder or a capsule. Some of the most recommended collagen supplements are Vida Glow Natural Marine Collagen, Hum Nutrition Collagen Love Skin Firming Supplement and Nature’s Way Beauty Collagen.

BEAUTY OF JORDAN
While Jordan’s baking is, of course, a thing of beauty in its own right, we asked about her personal beauty and skincare regiments.
WHAT PLATFORMS DO YOU USE TO FIND THE NEWEST AND MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET?
I tend to stick to beauty brands I know rather than trying out new ones, but Instagram is always pretty powerful when it comes to discovering new products – sometimes it’s hard to not get sucked in!
HAVE YOU PURCHASED A SKINCARE OR MAKEUP PRODUCT THAT YOU FELT WAS OVERRATED?
I recently purchased a Chanel hydrating serum, which was expensive. The whole bottle only lasted two weeks. I felt it made my skin a bit oily.
IF YOU HAVE A DAILY SKINCARE ROUTINE, WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU USE?
I love Eve Lom, Alpha H, and Elta MD products. For hair, I love Kerastase.

Searching for Silver Linings
After a series of health setbacks and being forced to leave her home after getting red-stickered, Luci Harrison continued to push through her challenges to find the silver lining in flourishing her Parnell-based pilates studio, allowing for her to grow her business.
As the director and instructor of Balance Bloom Pilates, Luci lives a busy and active life – and always has, having grown up on a large farm where she developed natural strength. At 13, a riding accident left Luci with fractured bones in her back which began her journey of healing and treating pain. From a young age, Luci discovered that movement was her form of pain relief. In 2017 she needed to find a new form of healing after being diagnosed with burnout, chronic fatigue, and hypothyroidism. Her reformer quickly
became the only form of bearable movement – being able to move her arms and legs on it gave her some hope. What started as a feeling of her body being drained and tight and tired turned into an extensive wellness journey. She began the Instagram page @sleepy2supercharged with tips to help midlife women recover from similar symptoms.
This past January, Luci’s wellness journey was looking encouraging and her pilates business was starting to build back up. However, 28 January brought more challenges her way as the council land behind her home slipped away causing her once very lush backyard to become unstable and put her home at risk of sliding down a cliff. She was desperate not knowing where to go or who to call. After days without answers and the news of being
red-stickered, she had only 30 minutes to get her belongings out. With the hope of helping others, Luci formed the Auckland Red Stickered Houses 2023 Facebook group.
Moving into a new studio, Luci’s focus was now carrying on with her business and leading by example for her clients. Being adaptable and resilient is something that she’s always valued, especially after what she has been through. She is there to tailor exercises to each client and listens to their specific needs.
At 55 Luci says, “I think that it’s really important to live the life that you are teaching, walk the talk.”

Opening Up
WORDS— JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACESThe card-sending fizzled out and was long forgotten until my recent chat with Amanda Cox, a psychotherapist and star (though she’d baulk at such a label) of the powerful reality TV series, Couples Therapy, which, well, does exactly what it says on the tin. When I ask her if it’s common for former clients to keep their therapist updated on their progress, her response surprisingly fills me with guilt.
“It doesn’t happen as often as I’d like,” comes the reply with some sadness. “Every now and then I get an email out of the blue from a couple, and that’s so lovely. I often wonder how they’re going.”
It’s proof of how much she cares, I say, and she says that she cares a lot. And even on the rare occasions she doesn’t click with a client, then she’ll “search for something within them to care about.” It must be difficult, I suspect, to remain outwardly neutral when it’s clear that one half of a couple is the main cause of their issues. Her focus, she says, is to always bring it back to the couple, as a unit, though she does admit to sometimes finding herself getting irritated with one person and not the other. Watching her show back, Amanda says she worried that she may have come across as being a little too harsh on some of the men. I ask her why. “It’s often the women that that will bring the complaint, and then we work from there,” she says. “So, usually the first port of call is trying to get the female to be heard.”
Is the stereotype true that women are the better communicators in a relationship?
“I think women are more verbal, generally speaking, but there are plenty of ways to communicate things, such as the Five Love Languages which involve the likes of physical touch, acts of service, and words of affirmation.”
Can you generally spot which couples will and won’t make it?
“Sometimes I find myself kind of thinking that we’ve got a lot of work to do here, but generally speaking, no, I’m never quite sure. Some couples really surprise me.”
I ask Amanda if all the couples are still together from the show, but she’s not able to say. Getting free therapy sessions was obviously a big lure for the participating pairs, but baring their souls in such a public fashion was still an extremely brave move. Sessions don’t just revolve around their joint stories, but their histories of past trauma, and even childhood abuse. Compelling and moving as it is, the programme is not without a sense of voyeurism.
“Having never worked in television before, there was the issue of trust,” she says. “There was a leap of faith. But everyone in the production have been lovely, and they did a beautiful job.”
With Amanda having some editorial input (“I wanted to make sure there was nothing alarmingly wrong that didn’t sit right
Several years ago, my then partner (now wife) and I attended some couple’s counselling sessions, and for a few Christmases afterwards I made sure to send our therapist a card to let her know that we were still hanging in there.
with me”), the leap of faith was arguably even greater for the couples whose only protection was the very partial anonymity of not revealing their last names.
The feedback has been generally positive, but Amanda reveals that some within her industry have misgivings about making something so private, so public. Indeed, this was a reservation that Amanda initially shared, but decided it more important to “demystify” therapy and encourage more people to seek more help.
All couples in the show are parents, which, says Amanda, is commonly the time when “the shit really hits the fan”. I ask about other common times for seeking therapy, and she says that the seven-year itch, give or take a year, really is a thing, as well as around the two-year mark (“once the initial romance has worn off and you start to learn the realities of each other”), and, more surprisingly, later in life, once the kids have grown up and fled the nest.
It’s also industry practice for therapists themselves to take part in ‘professional supervision’ – essentially wellbeing sessions with superiors to discuss experiences with their clients, a process that Amanda describes as like a “confidential quality control”.
Amanda – whose husband is also a psychotherapist – is also honest about having been in therapy herself, something she opens up about when asked about what led her to her chosen career.
“The standard answer is ‘because I wanted to help people’, which is true, especially as I was previously a nurse,” she says. “But I think there are always more personal reasons for those that become helpers.” She says that one of the most powerful aspects to her training was delving into the reasons why she
wanted to pursue therapy. She asks if I’ve ever heard the term ‘wounded healer’, which I haven’t, though can take an educated guess.
The youngest of four children, Amanda was just seven years old when her sister died. “No one in our family processed the grief,” she recalls, “and I remember attending to other people’s needs a lot.” Her father worked away for much of the week and her mother was understandably “depressed and shattered”. They later divorced. “I learned to check in with everyone around me, and I ended up becoming a registered nurse, continuing to help others, and reached a point where I realised that I had to tend to my own needs as well.
“It was trying to get this balance of how do I feel? Of what do I need? This was a lot of my process in getting to the point where I became a therapist. I've never shied away from therapy. I've had years of it. It’s vital to be able to sit with my own feelings and my own experience and in my own grief, my loss, my anger. And now I can help other people with it.”
Not being able to attend to one’s own needs, she adds, becomes very detrimental to relationships. So, does it make things smoother being married to a therapist, too?
“Yes, it does – in our case anyway!” she says. “Like any couple, we had to get to know each other, but both being psychotherapists we are both very aware of ourselves and each other, and we have a lovely relationship.”
And with that, it’s time for our session to draw to a close, and I make a mental note to send my old therapist a long overdue card.
All 10 episodes of Couples Therapy NZ are available to stream on ThreeNow.
Not being able to attend to one’s own needs, she adds, becomes very detrimental to relationships.
Come What May
consultant
founder of May Communications &
Verve chats to Queenstown-based Trish about life as a business owner.
What is your academic background?
I studied a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Double Major in Political Science and American Studies, and then undertook a Post Graduate Diploma of Tourism, which is where my desire to work in the field of tourism was born. I upskilled further by obtaining an MBA Executive Leadership qualification and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business and Administration, part-time while working.
How did May Communications & Marketing come about?
After working for seven years for Tourism Rotorua and three years at Rainbow Springs & Farm Show, I decided it was time to venture out on my own. So, in 2000 I launched May Marketing & Communications with the intention to create a boutique marketing agency, specialising in sales and marketing services for the tourism, travel, and professional services industries.
Over the 23 years you’ve been in business, it’s only been yourself at the helm. Did you ever consider expanding?
I greatly considered the opportunity to grow as it seemed a natural step as I got busier with more clients. However, I came to the realisation that by doing so, I would have to step into more of a management role for the agency, rather than retaining close contact with my clients and providing them with marketing solutions for their businesses, which is what I love doing. Therefore, I chose to retain the boutique nature of my business by being solo – although I do contract in extra resources on a project-by-project basis.
What do you like about being a women in business?
I think that women generally bring more consideration and compassion into the business world, and I like being in that environment.
As an experienced marketing
and
Marketing, and New Zealand Travel Collective, Trish May has worked for some of New Zealand’s leading tourism and travel businesses for the last two decades, providing them with a wide range of marketing services to assist with business growth.
Is it becoming easier for women to succeed in business?
Post-pandemic society is much more accepting of working from home, hybrid working, and flexible arrangements to enable women to undertake family commitments. To that extent, whether a woman is in their own business or in employment, it is becoming easier to juggle demands of life.
Who are your heroes?
Dame Sian Elias and Dame Silvia Cartwright for their accomplishments in law during a time when women in law were rare and women in senior positions were scarce. Peta Mathias for her zest and energy. Lisa O’Neill for her fun and hilarious commentary on style and life in general.
Have you had mentors throughout your career?
Most recently I’ve been working with a fabulous business mentor, Giselle McLachlan. Giselle is a highly successful and focused woman in business. She has a background in law, insurance and directorships and more recently is heavily involved in driving for excellence in the governance sector through her business Grounded Governance. Also, Arihia Carrington, who was chief executive officer at New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, now Te Puia in Rotorua. Arihia was the first, I believe, female CEO at NZMACI.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
My first boss, Steve, reminded me that you meet the same people coming down the ladder as you do climbing up the ladder. So be respectful and courteous to all, no matter their position in life or in business.
What is your proudest career moment to date?
There are many moments, but mostly they relate to clients winning awards over the years. Largely this has been in the New Zealand Tourism Awards where I’ve assisted clients with preparing their entries. I get such a thrill to see them profiled as finalists and recognised by their peers for their business
excellence. When they win, I’m usually the biggest cheerleader in the audience! It’s so rewarding and exciting.
What exciting projects are you currently working on?
I’m currently focused on a new sales representation service called the New Zealand Travel Collective. It was launched two years ago aimed at showcasing awesome tourism businesses to the international travel agent market. Typically, the businesses in the collective are small to medium sized ones wanting to grow this segment of their business. I’ve recently completed my first solo sales mission to the UK, meeting agents in-market. Before the end of the year I will undertake missions to Australia, North America and Singapore. I relish the opportunity to add tourism business into the collective and showcase them globally.
What inspires you on a daily basis?
Connecting! I like connecting with people – whether it’s with clients, or networking with business colleagues and connecting them together.
How do you switch off outside of work?
With my fur-baby – a nine-year-old Labradoodle called Webster. As I work from home, he’s my office buddy and is always keen on an exploratory walk at any time of the day!
Any podcast or reading recommendations?
My Daily Business by Fiona Killacky, an experienced marketer with a refreshing approach and awesome tips and reminders. The Quicky by MamaMia – as the name suggests, it’s a quick round-up of news and then a deep dive into some general interest topics. Radio New Zealand – on demand listening of interesting interviews mainly from Saturday Morning with Kim Hill and Sunday Morning with Jim Mora.

10 August –2 September
With a stellar line-up of some of Aotearoa’s most exciting Tongan Artists, this exhibition is all about the magic of Tukufakaholo.
Through a European lens Tukufakaholo translates as inheritance or hereditary, but in Tonga, the definition is much broader than that. Tukufakaholo is the passing-on of the knowledge and wisdom that connects the past, present and future. In this context the artists are conduits for ways of being, and their work a visual repository of knowledge.

“Ellis grew up in Ōtepoti Dunedin and Ōtautahi Christchurch in the 196070s with the smell of bituminous coal burning in the fireplace, and in the air. The nostalgia that coal now occupies for him is also a source of irony. In a suite of new works, coal is highly aestheticized, and rendered in exquisite detail.”
– Emil McAvoy, Art writerLamp Black continues Ellis’s ongoing project exploring themes of environmental degradation and climate change. The exhibition presents a suite of new drawings created using the carbon black pigment traditionally produced by collecting soot from oil lamps and features giant lumps of coal levitating over glacial South Island landscapes.

Thistles, thorns and exploding floral tributes populate Gavin Hurley’s new series of paintings, engulfing and threatening to obliterate the portraits beneath. Characters are derived from Hurley’s interest in the past – both popular culture, more austere political histories, and art history, as well as continuing to mine his own personal artistic archives. Hurley masterfully interweaves a cast of characters and ideas both past and present, real and imagined to create this new body of work.

Exhibitions of new paintings by Michael Shepherd are infrequent but much anticipated. The artist’s distinctive practice combines technical mastery, thematic gravitas, idiosyncratic imagery, and that element of mystery and magic necessary to attract and hold attention.
In Gond, Shepherd explores territory with filaments connecting it to many previous themes and preoccupations – history, warfare, insignia, indigeneity, colonialism, landscape, ecology, botany, geomorphology, and art history.

Harriet Millar
Harriet Millar’s landscape and botanical paintng will be on display at her solo exhibiton at the Turua Gallery in August.
Harriet, a mother of five, has grown her career and love of painting now that each of her children attend school. Much of her inspiration comes from the beautiful New Zealand landscape.
When did you begin perusing an art career and why?
I grew up painting and drawing constantly and the joy never really left me. About seven years ago it was suggested to me that I would be great at selling other artists’ work, but all I could think was, “No, I want to sell my work!” It was that moment I knew what I wanted to do and so I studied hard and stilll do.
What motivates you to create pieces?
Suddenly spotting an image, whether it be a landscape or a bunch of flowers. It’s the instant knowing accompanied by butterflies in the stomach, that the composition works, the light is right, and everything comes together naturally.
Do you ever suffer creative block, and if so, how do get through it?
Creative blocks happen more regularly than I would like, normally after finishing a piece I’m not happy with. I lose all
confidence and am consumed with the fear that I need to start looking for another line of work. I make regular trips to the dump so that people will never see those works!
What has been your favourite piece of work?
My favourite piece currently is a large dahlia painting – the flowers were dying and the petals so beautiful I had to capture it. This piece is meant for my upcoming exhibition at Turua Gallery, and I’m finding it hard knowing it must be packaged up and sent quite soon. I would really like to keep it! My other favourites are the paintings in my kitchen of my five children, a great alternative to photos.

The Changing Lens of Art
WORDS BY AIMÉE RALFINIThe westernised construct of beauty has long influenced the portrayal of Aotearoa through fine art.
The influence of romanticism, which celebrated the sublime and aweinspiring aspects of nature, was embraced by early landscape artists such as John Gully and Charles Heaphy; their work depicting the rugged beauty and untamed wilderness of New Zealand. These romantic ideals are woven into our country’s narrative –Pure NZ, God’s Own.
Such nostalgic depictions are still held in high regard by olden collectors. Reaching jaw-dropping prices in secondary markets, they make headlines. But these are the last of the spoils, things are different now.
The age of connection has opened eyes to other viewpoints, that even our most established institutions now celebrate – The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki broke its own mould with the long overdue Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art in 2020, and this month opens
Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia, a survey of works by over 160 First Nations Australian artists from 1890 to today.
Ever Present bridges time and place, the works on display are interconnected through stories and experiences that explore themes of Ancestors, Community, Culture, Colonisation, and Identity.
Just as our environment is changing so is the lens of art. Art Ache's exhibition Moths by Liam Gerrard exemplifies this evolving lens. Displayed on Lumo Digital's outdoor platform, the exhibition reaches a wide audience, subverting the nation's urban landscape. In this series, Gerrard captures the fragility of life in captivating portraits of three endemic New Zealand moths — insects with an average lifespan of one to six months, that often survive for just one to two weeks. Seeing Gerrard’s quiet light seekers enlarged within a cityscape creates a moment of delicate beauty, the 16-second fleeting nature of the medium highlights their short lifespans and invites viewers to pause, reflect, and cherish the transient nature of life.
Contemporary art is now reflecting the temporary nature of the landscape, embracing diverse perspectives, and challenging traditional norms, creating a dynamic and evolving artistic landscape.
The Frame Workshop & Gallery is a combination of our two passions: contemporary NZ art and the bespoke frames that surround that art.
Our team consists of experienced, custom framers and art consultants who have worked in the industry for many years, each bringing their extensive framing knowledge and creative background to what we do.

emerging and mid-career artists, as well as our exhibition programme. Our next exhibition is Orchestra of Light by Melanie Field, opening Thursday 27 July. Melanie is an emerging Auckland artist, and this is her very first solo show – we can’t wait to share this body of work in our space.
Our second location, in Onehunga, is housed in an amazing industrial warehouse and is where the framing magic happens! There’s a large consultation area as well as a mini gallery, showcasing works from our stable of artists and inspiration for framing.

The Young Lotus
“Meditation,” according to the early 20th-century scribe, James Allen , “is the secret of all growth in spiritual life and knowledge.” It is a secret that has spanned cultures and millennia –maybe even pre-dating civilisation itself.
WORDS— JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACESCave paintings discovered in the Indus Valley, possibly dating as far back as 5,000 BC, show people sitting in the lotus position – legs crossed with hands on their knees – while the earliest writings about mention meditation came from the same region around 3,000 years ago. The practice spread from modernday India throughout Asia and beyond, with all major religions adopting some form of it.
MEDITATING ON THE BENEFITS
Research concludes those who regularly practise meditation strengthen and even thicken the parts of the brain involved with memory and attention, leading some to argue that ritualistic meditation may even have played a part in separating modern humans from Neanderthals. Studies have shown that after just eight weeks of daily 30-minute meditation sessions, our bodies begin to produce more grey matter – essential for brain health and function.
Other scientifically proven benefits of the practice include improved sleep, mood regulation, a strengthened immune system, reduced stress, and better anxiety management – all things that benefit children as well as adults. So, should – and can – kids actually meditate? Absolutely!
Children that regularly meditate have been shown to have better attention spans as it trains their minds to be less easily distracted. It has also been shown to help kids develop their metacognition – their awareness of their own learning processes, or ‘thinking about thinking’, said to improve techniques for studying. And their personal lives will benefit just as much as their academic ones, increasing their capacity for calmness and self-acceptance – essential skills
for navigating those angst-ridden teenage years – while also developing emotional intelligence leading to greater empathy, humility, and resilience.
GETTING KIDS TO BE… AND BREATHE
There’s an old Zen saying that recommends everyone should set aside 20 minutes a day to meditate, while those who are too busy should “sit for an hour”. That Zen master clearly had no experience with children! However, meditation does not necessarily need to only involve sitting still for great stretches of time.
According to Sarah Meyer Tapia, a meditation coach, associate director of Health & Human Performance and head of Wellness Education at Stanford University, there is no right or wrong way to meditate. “Any activity can be meditative if we’re fully present,” she tells Forbes . “Meditation is to be present and know what we are doing, while we are doing it.” She advises noticing places that we are most at peace and comfort – whether it be in the shower, on walks, or hanging out with our pets – as the times to ensure that we are most present.
“Young children need short, fun activities to introduce them to concentration practice,” meditation teacher Wendelin Wagner tells Mindworks . “Using touch to focus attention is a great beginning technique.” She suggests the Toes to Nose game as a way of introducing kids to mindfulness, a technique that involves a guide using light touch to describe a bug working its way down their body. Older children can do a simplified, shortened version of the body scan – a practice that involves paying attention to breath and being aware of each part of our bodies, working up from feet to head.
According to Andy Puddicombe, a former Buddhist monk and co-founder of Headspace – the app credited with playing a major role in propelling mindful meditation into the public consciousness – we may be greatly underestimating our kids’ capabilities.
"It’s almost as though meditation was designed for kids,” he says. “They just ‘get it’.” The natural elasticity and freedom of children’s minds not only allows them to be present in the moment, but frees them from external pressures: “By introducing meditation and mindfulness at an early age, not only can we build on this and help nurture their mind development, but we are also making meditation simple and accessible.”
TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
Headspace argues that introducing mindfulness from the age of three to four, when children have “acquired an awareness of themselves and others”, will begin to “teach them how to cultivate peace, happiness, and compassion for the rest of their lives”. Suggested practices include:
• wa lking while paying attention to sounds such as passing cars and
rustling leaves, then once home talking about how it made the child feel.
• m indful eating to engage all the senses, asking the child to pay attention to food’s texture, shape, and smell, savouring it and noticing it as they chew and swallow.
• i ntroducing them to simple breathing exercises and visualisations, focusing on the rise and fall of their bellies, imaging their favourite smell as they breathe in, and pretending blow out a candle with an exhale. And start small – just 10 breaths!
World-leading early learning organisation Begin (who also have an app, called Homer), say that introductory sessions should be as short as 30 seconds, and advise starting each one with some fun dancing or jogging on the spot to stretch the muscles and burn off some excess energy in preparation for some quiet time. As well as body scanning and mindful breathing exercises, they also suggest incorporating storytelling, using their favourite toys, people and places to allow them to focus on their body. Can they feel the softness of their sheets? Their favourite stuffed toy whispering
“goodnight”? Other practical tips include:
• meeting the child where they are. There’s little point setting immovable goals that set children up for failure and risk turning them away from meditation. Start small and let them develop at their own pace.
• being consistent. It’s helpful to practise at the same time, in the same place, and even in the same clothes every day so that your child learns to associate those things with relaxation and mindfulness.
keeping at it! It’s called mindful “practice” for good reason – it takes time and repetition to master. Meditation can be overwhelming even for adults, so accept that your child’s interest may ebb and flow, but stick with it, and the results will come in the end.
The natural elasticity and freedom of children’s minds not only allows them to be present in the moment, but frees them from external pressures.
What’s Your Type?
Of these, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is by some way the most popular, and it has been estimated that up to 80% of Fortune 500 companies and 89% of Fortune 100 companies have employed it. Such tests are often used by employers to discover candidates’ potential strengths and weakness, and how they might interact with a current team. They are also used on existing employees to gauge where and how improvements could be made within the workplace.
CODING
The MBTI, inspired by the theories of Carl Jung, creates four-letter personality codes for each individual using eight characteristics: extraversion (E) or introversion (I); sensing (S) or intuitive (N); feeling (F) or thinking (T); and judging (J) or perceiving (P). Through a series of questions, participants discover which half of each pairing most applies to them, resulting in that final four-letter sequence.
Of the 16 possible personality types, research has shown that those whose codes end with TJ to be the highest earners
– with ESTJ coming out on top (famous faces include Henry Ford, Margaret Thatcher, and, er, Saddam Hussein). Jessica Butt, Myers-Briggs expert, and author of Live Your Life from the Front Seat, says that this is because thinkers (Ts) and judgers (Js) are steered by their heads rather than their hearts, and are more likely to be driven, headstrong, and extroverted.
“We live in an extroverted world,” she tells CNBC. “Our companies are, our corporations and schools are set up to reward extroversion, so I think that’s a big factor in terms of people’s success.” Certainly not a defining factor, however, with notable ‘introverts’ including Mark Zuckerberg and Hillary Clinton.
TESTING, TESTING
The French psychologist Alfred Binet created the first intelligence test in 1905, which sparked interest in measuring other human traits. The very first personality test was developed by the US Army during the first world war as a
WORDS— JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACESAround 80 million people complete (predominantly) self-reported personality tests each year, which make up an industry predicted to be worth more than $10 billion by 2027.
means of predicting which soldiers would suffer what was then known as shell shock (now called post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD).
Within two years of the US entering the conflict, more than 1.7 million soldiers had been tested, many using a set of yes-no questions developed by Professor Robert Sessions Woodworth of Columbia University. Around 2% of the soldiers were rejected owing to psychological concerns. “The experience of other armies had shown that liability to ‘shell shock’ or war neurosis was a handicap almost as serious as low intelligence,” observed Woodworth. “I concluded that the best immediate lead lay in the early symptoms of neurotic tendency.”
Around this time, writer Katherine Briggs, along with her daughter, Isabel, were working on what would become the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Other tests include the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), developed in the 1930s and still used by mental health professionals today, and the Five-Factor Model, developed in the 80s, which, according to the Harvard Business Review, is the “gold standard” of personality research which, unlike the MBTI, “can reliably predict job performance”. Also known as the “Big Five”, this test splits personalities into five (obviously) categories: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
A QUESTION OF INDIVIDUALITY
Studies have shown personalities to be influenced by both biological and environmental factors, with maturation also playing an important role. And though adulthood generally leads to a stabilisation of traits, they do continue to evolve with age. People often become less open to new experiences and less neurotic as they get older, for example, but may develop
a greater capacity for agreeableness and conscientiousness with more laps of the sun. And herein lies one of the industry’s many issues: personality tests assume traits are fixed.
Such issues are explored in the 2021 HBO Max documentary, Persona: The Dark Truth Behind Personality Tests itself influenced by the 2018 book, The Personality Brokers, by Professor Merve Emre. It tells of how since the 1960s, 50 million people have taken the MBTI test, with up to 70% of the American prospective workforce forced to test today.
“Personality tests are useful for individual people sometimes on journeys of self-discovery,” says disability justice advocate Lydia XZ Brown. “But when they’re used to make decisions by other people affecting someone’s life, they become dangerous tools.” The tests, she adds, are built to be ableist, racist, sexist, and classist.
In 2012, Kyle Behm was rejected from a supermarket job application following a personality test that indicated he was likely to ignore difficult customers. “I was taken aback because I’ve worked in customer service before and one of the things I’ve learned is to completely separate your personal feelings from the job,” says Behm, who has bipolar disorder. “It’s not fair that by answering honestly about things that were related to my mental health I was excluded from work.” Complaints were duly filed with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
In 2015, the EEOC learned that Target had been using pre-hire employment assessments to discriminate against candidates based on race, sex, and disability, in violation of both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Nearly US$3 million was paid out to the thousands of negatively impacted candidates.

Studies have shown personalities to be influenced by both biological and environmental factors, with maturation also playing an important role.
Those that find the concept of personality testing for a job application intimidating look away now, in development are video-interview platforms that analyse words, speech, and facial movements – something that Brown describes as more “pseudoscience”. Documentary maker Tim Travers Hawkins warns that personality testing is becoming more prevalent with “more windows for this technology to be inserted at different junctures of our interactions”. While it’s human nature to be drawn to systems that offer neat, neutral explanations, he adds, we should “be wary and to think about where these instruments come from”.
Jessica Butt is adamant that leaders are not certain personality types, rather, what’s more important is that we are in the right career for our personalities meaning “you can make as much money as any person, because you will naturally become the best at your position”.
Perhaps Carl Jung – the ‘father of analytical psychology’ who inadvertently inspired the daddy of personality tests, the MBTI – best summed it up when he said, “Every individual is the exception to the rule.”
Lucy's Corner
This month Verve’s star teen reviewer LUCY KENNEDY reviews the movie everyone’s talking about: Barbie .
Barbie - PG-13Grab your pinkest outfit and a pair of high-heels – the Barbie movie is out! I was never a massive Barbie fan and was initially unsure as to whether I wanted to see the film, but when I heard that the incredible Greta Gerwig was the director, I secured a ticket ASAP. There has been a lot of hype surrounding the movie’s release, and I was curious to see what it was about. For me, watching Barbie felt a lot like watching the films of my childhood - funny, bright, and enjoyable, with incredibly enviable costumes.
Margot Robbie plays the title role of Barbie, and absolutely smashes it with her convincing facial expressions. In the film, Barbie enters the real world naively believing it cannot be that different from her home, Barbieland. Robbie really captures that crestfallen discovery that, in the real world, not everything is perfect or equal. She also shows the pure joy in knowing that while not everything is perfect, some things are still good and true in our world – the beauty in connecting with others, respecting your bod, embracing the process of ageing, and
living by your own rules. While Barbie is definitely a film about a doll and her journey, it’s also about the ups and downs of life.
A lot of entertainment made in recent years for young girls has been very edgy and dark so Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is a breath of fresh air in that respect. Barbie is a really well-written film with lines that had the whole cinema laughing, a killer monologue on the nature of society’s sexist double standards, and an ending with a level of deep symbolism that I did not expect from a movie about Barbie. I’d recommend this film to anyone who loves Barbie (obviously), the colour pink, extravagant dance numbers, or feminism.

Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on two of M by Montana’s new wine releases.
In 1934, Ivan and Amanda Yukich, two young Yugoslavian immigrants, planted grapes on a small plot of land in Titirangi. Their first vintage was all sold in 1944 and over the next 15 years they acquired more land to plant more grapes. In 1961 their two sons, Mate and Frank, joined the business and Montana Wines was born.
Montana became so successful that additional land in Gisborne and Marlborough was acquired and as the winery grew so did the opportunity to export. What followed was quite remarkable: Montana became the first winery to be listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange. The growth continued and in 2000, Corbans Wines was acquired, making Montana a powerhouse winemaker. In 2005 Pernod Ricard made a successful takeover bid and the rest, as they say, is history. To commemorate 50 years of the first wine plantations, M by Montana has produced a new pinnacle range of four wines.
Here are two exceptional value-for-money wines that will not disappoint.
Despite the growing competition in the neighbourhood, the popular Da Sette Soldi succeeds by holding fast to its Italian roots.
Nowadays, the term ‘icon’ is too readily applied, but this relaxed suburban ristorante is a place where it can be bestowed confidently – and the reason why it’s always full. Forget fancy, forget tizz, and rejoice in a chef who isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. It’s a successful formula that starts with the perfect pronunciation of the allItalian menu, a judicious combination of friendly service that continues with big flavours of Italian classics from a simple produce-driven bill of fare.
Expect plenty of flavour, indulgence and a style that should be recorded into a how-to textbook. The kitchen sends out dishes that range from appetisers to pasta and risotto to seafood to meat dishes and traditional pizzas, and also knows when to tweak the classics. Classics like cannelloni ($26.50), risotto ($28.50), spaghetti marinara ($28.90), lasagne ($26.50), tortellini ($28.50) and fettuccine ($28.50). Desserts provides a sensational finish.
Rich and ripe with a core of white fruit that has plenty of freshness, balance, and flavour that adds complexity, structure, and a distinctive bouquet. Pair with seafood, fish dishes, roast chicken, pork, and pasta.
’22
A vibrant and full-bodied wine displaying delicate characters of intensively fresh citrus that’s crisp and dry on the palate with a delicate acidity. The perfect match when served with seafood, vegetarian, and Asianinspired dishes.
Food & Wine
The menu is complemented with a selection of beers and a sharp but inexpensive Italian wine list featuring some interesting drops by the glass.
And the verdict? Da Setta Soldi has morphed from a very good suburban eatery specialising in pizza to something much more rewarding. The real enjoyment of eating here is all about how they manage to effortless engage all the senses.

Why did you move to Matakana?
My parents moved to Matakana about 10 years ago, so it became our weekend escape. Fast forward to 2020 and we were about to have our first child so decided to move to Matakana to be closer to my parents. It was supposed to be for eight to 12months, and it’s now been three years!
How has the move been?
We’ve never looked back! After our eight-month trial, we decided to buy a house and make the move permanent. It’s given me the opportunity to work from home and create my own clothing brand, Dear Mumma Maternity.
What do you most love about it?
We love the community and village feel. We have met so many likeminded families and couples with the same goal to switch that work life balance and enjoy more family time. We’re so lucky to have amazing local shops like the Bach and Two Boutique who stock top fashion brands. There are so many beautiful restaurants like The Farmers Daughter and Smoko Room at the sawmill. And we love having Omaha beach on our doorstep.

Why did you move to Matakana?
We wanted to escape the city and had always dreamed of a spot that was still accessible to Auckland, but with an awesome laid-back lifestyle. After seriously considering Waiheke and Queenstown, we fell in love with Matakana: the beaches, the wineries, and the community.
How has the move been?
We moved during covid, so the first few months were a bit tricky. Once we settled in though, we didn’t look back. We initially thought we might move back to the city one day, but those thoughts are completely gone now. We couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.
What do you most love about it?
Matakana is a really special place. We often say we can’t believe we get to call this home. The community is unbelievable. The lifestyle for our kids – aged four and one –is like going back in time; biking between neighbours’ houses, beach every day, climbing trees, and running barefoot and fancy free. We have met so many incredible people and have been so quickly welcomed into the community, with friends popping in and helping out when we need a hand. There’s always something to do or someone to celebrate.
Anything you regret?
Not moving earlier!
What do you miss about Auckland ?
I don’t miss the traffic and roadworks. Entertaining kids in winter is tougher up here, however, as the area grows and with the new motorway opening, we may see more activities and businesses opening for kids’ entertainment.
Anything you regret?
Not moving here sooner!
What do you miss about Auckland ?
Honestly not much really. Maybe only that it’s a little tricky with young kids in winter as there are not many indoor activities. We often will pop down on a really rainy day and explore Auckland, it’s so accessible – we have the best of both worlds living here.

Why did you move to Matakana?
I loved visiting Matakana from a young age, and could always see myself living here. After a serious car accident in 2011 whilst working in Australia, the energy of living in a busy city no longer appealed to me. I felt a need to be closer to the ocean, and nature was much more aligned to the lifestyle I wanted to live.
How has the move been?
I moved over eight years ago, and it’s been one of the best decisions I ever made. It was actually a dream of mine to own a wellness centre here one day – incredibly this came to fruition when six months ago, the opportunity to take over Bali Garden was presented to me.
What do you most love about it?
Matakana is a very special place with so much on offer: stunning scenery, marine and wildlife sanctuaries, nature and sculpture walks, vineyards, local breweries, a boutique cinema, and a popular farmers’ market. I feel extremely grateful to live here. There are so many incredible beaches right on our doorstep, like Pakiri, Tawharanui, and Omaha. I love being able to go surfing whenever there’s a wave and not having to battle crowds or traffic. There’s a greater sense of community here in Matakana compared to when I lived in the city.

Why did you move to Matakana?
My husband and I made the decision to move to Matakana to prioritise a better life for us as individuals and for our family – one centred around nature, community, a slower pace, and quality time. It has exceeded expectations in all areas!
How has the move been?
Exciting! I felt the move was easy, but it was my husband who did all the heavy lifting, and he will be happy not to move house again any time soon. It felt surreal to have our first night here and four months in we still comment each week that it feels like we are on holiday and about to go home. We feel so grateful that this is now our home.
What do you most love about it?
We absolutely adore it here. I love it even more than I thought I would. The
Anything you regret?
Nothing, zero regrets.
What do you miss about Auckland ?
There’s actually not a lot that I miss about city life, however, I do miss the variety of restaurants and being able to spontaneously meet up with family and friends.
access to nature and community is what we value the most — we spend our weekends exploring at the beach or walking through paddocks filled with animals and birds or planting our garden or planning our vegetable patch. Our children are in heaven and so are we! We feel like we are living our dream life.
What has pleasantly surprised us the most is the community and connections we’ve made. Everyone has been so welcoming and inclusive, and the people here have an enthusiasm for life. There is always an invite for coffee, a drink at the local pub, golf games or surfing trips, book clubs, and dinner parties. We have met so many great families that we see multiple times a week.
Anything you regret?
Nothing at all — we couldn’t be happier!
What do you miss about Auckland ?
We have great friends in the city who we wish we saw more of, but we have had many special visitors since we moved, and I know there will be more to come, especially as the temperature rises! As the seasons change Matakana just gets better and better.

Mental Cases
WORDS— JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACESAnd one that inspired him to create the award-winning podcast, Are You Mental?
“I basically went through a period of life where I wanted –needed – some counselling myself,” Mick tells Verve . “The more I did it, the more I viewed the process objectively, and the exploration of the inner workings of the mind I found fascinating, even fun. I started to look across at my counsellor and think that I’d actually quite like to be in her seat.”
Did you immediately find it easy to talk?
“Honestly, I’m a pretty open guy, it doesn’t take too much for me to tell people what’s going on with me! Having said that, it does help to meet someone you click and connect with.”
In the podcast episode ‘Therapy’, Mick interviews three professionals from the mental health field, one of whom describes their work as “being in the business of hope”. It’s a beautiful way of describing the industry. I ask Mick for his thoughts.
“For me, hope gives purpose,” says Mick. “Whether it was counselling people or making a podcast about mental health, I guess it’s the classic thing of wanting to leave the world a slightly better place than how you found it.”
I ask Mick if that’s a result of his upbringing and he said that his parents’ strong values of generosity and kindness definitely “rubbed off on me”. It was a happy childhood then, I ask, and he says that it was. The reason I ask, I tell him, is that in a recent interview with the psychotherapist Amanda Cox [of the TV show Couples Therapy, featured on page 106], she described herself as ‘wounded healer’ steered towards her field by some traumatic childhood events. Mick says that he’s also observed that among his peers. “But I guess no one escapes without having to deal with things in life,” he adds, pensively. “We all have to go through a process of healing.”
I ask if the podcast has made him a better counsellor.
From comedian to performer to filmmaker, Mick Andrews has worn – and continues to wear –many hats, but it is that of counsellor that he wears with most pride.
“I think it’s more the other way round, that being a counsellor has made me a better storyteller,” he reflects, “I don’t think I’d be able to hold that space without my studies. But the podcast has certainly helped me in terms of knowledge.”
Taking part in a podcast must be very similar to a therapy or counselling session?
“You know, two of my interviewees in the past couple of weeks have asked at the end how much they owe me for it! I love hearing that because sometimes I worry that I’m almost leeching off people. They’re generously giving up their time and I’m kind of stealing their stories and putting them out there. But I like to think that I’m a safe person to unburden on.”
Is it that sense of unburdening that ultimately leads them to open up so publicly?
“I think so. They have said that they hope good will come from it, that it may lead to others to feel inspired or empowered or validated. That healing is possible.”
There are some harrowing stories, presumably your counselling training helps you deal with that aspect when the chats are over?
“Yes, but it is something that I am still mastering. I think of myself as someone who’s quite good at compartmentalising, but I do sometimes find myself at night sitting with certain stories, and I have to give myself space to reflect on those. There’s no simple formula for that.”
Mick says that the ‘Bipolar’ episode was particularly tough as he realised that those involved would be continuing a difficult
“ongoing journey”. That episode is also the most streamed of the series, and I ask Mick if he knows why. It’s certainly not the most common of mental health issues, he says (“that would be anxiety or depression”), so it may simply be a case of there not being enough about the topic out there, and it was perhaps posted somewhere within the community and took off.
He hopes his podcast will increase not just understanding of mental health, but our understanding of each other. That it will increase empathy. Feedback from the public has been overwhelming positive, and he’s currently in the middle of the third series, which covers the likes of depression, ADHD, and loneliness.
“I’ve also had some counsellors say that they’ve advised their clients to listen to certain episodes,” says Mick. “It means a lot, and all serves as motivation to keep on at it.”
And long may it continue.
The Are You Mental? podcast is available on all major streaming services.
He hopes his podcasts will increase not just understanding of mental health, but our understanding of each other.

Architectural design is meeting the expectation.
When building my first two-bedroom house down a steep slope on a third of a section, I complained to my dad how expensive new houses were to build.
He explained that when he brought our family home, a villa in Epsom, there were no carpets, no drapes, single glazing, no fridge, one single bathroom, and one toilet for five boys – so thank God for the garden! The shower was over the bath, the gas hot water cylinder meant a cold bath for the youngest, and just one single power point per room and one central light fitting per room – with no dimming. Plus, no insulation under the floor, in the walls or the ceiling, and no garage.
In short, you got very little for your money a generation ago.
At one stage my brother and I shared a bedroom on an enclosed veranda. I believe the exterior wall was only hardboard, with no internal lining. There was only enough room for two beds and walking room between. I can't remember where our clothes were. And yes, it was cold, but we survived.
Today the expectation of the homeowner is a fully insulated house, doubled glazed, with heat pump, two living areas, designer kitchen with dishwasher, children's bedrooms the size of the old master bedrooms, with power points and light fittings to Africa, alarms, CCTV and internet, drapes, carpet, more than one bathroom, with under tile heating, and a garage.
Add to that the ever-increasing government code requirements and council fees and compliance costs (health and safety on site I agree with, most old builders have had injuries on site). The government has just significantly increased the insulation requirements, so we can stay warm when it's snowing in Auckland.
When people tell me building is so expensive, I agree, but you are getting so much more for your money.

2019-2023 AgedCare
With the arrival of August, the days gradually become longer, and signs of spring start to appear in the garden once again. There is much to do to get your garden ready for the upcoming spring.
Veggies
Now is the time to start regularly feeding your veggies with Kings Organic Vegetable Fertiliser. Sow spring seeds into seed-raising mix now, including peas, beans, lettuce, celery, broccoli, and cauliflower. Sow tomato, basil, and chilli seeds indoors, before transplanting them outside in September.
Fruit
Don’t forget to buy your deciduous fruit trees now. Spray with Yates Liquid Copper before bud-burst to help lessen
the effects of fungal diseases such as shot hole and leaf curl. If you are going to graft or espalier fruit trees, do this in late-August to mid-September.
Flowers
Deadhead old blooms as they fade, as this encourages repeat flowering. Early spring bulbs may now be flowering – try cutting and gifting to a friend or family member. Start planting summer bulbs now.
Trees and Shrubs
Magnolias and flowering cherries will arrive in stores this month – plant them early to enjoy their beautiful blooms this spring. Mulch around trees with Living Earth More Than Mulch. Trim and shape early flowering camellias once blooms have finished. Feed the whole garden with Kings Garden Booster.
Indoor Plants
Start repotting at the end of August, using Kings House Plant Mix. Rotate houseplants that have been stretching towards the light, and start fertilising with Kings Liquid House Plant Food.
General Tasks
Consider making your own compost bin if you have the space. Get rid of weeds before they get out of hand. Put up wasp traps as queens begin to come out of hibernation. Cut down your green crops in early August and dig them into your garden beds.

BIALETTI X DOLCE & GABBANA
Amore! You can wear designer, and now you can drink it too. Short of a trip to Sicily, this limited line is quintessential la dolce vita, with an audacious rewrite of the famous Moka Express. The Italian hero of stovetop coffee’s latest moniker is a muse of Dolce & Gabbana.
And in D&G style, the result is a less than subtle tribute to both brands’ heritage with intricate and traditional elements of Sicilian artistic tapestry wrapped in an accessible entry into the luxury fashion house from RRP$195. Bialetti x Dolce & Gabbana’s limited edition Moka Express is available now at Smith & Caughey’s and online at bialetti.co.nz

Horoscopes
You’re seeing past relationships and expectations in a different light and redefining what it is you now want and need from your connections and your studies. New information can surface that shines a light on a past matter, or there can be a connection made with someone from your past. You would reorganise your financial strategy, avoid extravaganza, give importance to priorities in life, and save for the future.
23 September –
You’re feeling especially optimistic about your work this month, and you’re being received in a wonderfully charming light. It’s easy to rally up support now. Career-wise your power to attract attention boosts your position amongst the favoured but beware competition can be stiff. Any crisis occurring in your work at this time is simply clearing the way towards better work conditions. This is a time for making decisions and correcting imbalances in your life, particularly if you’ve been overly tied up with your daily affairs and living in your mind a little too much. You have a need to live and love more freely rather than spending too much time worrying about problems. Travel or connections made with people from vastly different cultures than your own can be enjoyable and beneficial.
22 November –21 December
This is a strong month for accounting work and taking charge of your intimate or financial life. The desire for recognition of your performance can be stimulated. Unhealthy dependencies need to go. While some of you could be experiencing real conflicts with a partner or best friend, others may be actively working to improve partnerships. Relationships that have been too restrictive, tense, dull, or negative need to improve.
This month brings strong and enthusiastic energy to your domestic projects and home life. You’re generally in good shape when it comes to your close relationships as well animating romantic relationships, firing up feelings towards someone, and inspiring you to create, share, and connect. There is more fire, passion, and motivation to express yourself in unique, special ways, and more courage to chase your heart’s desire.
CAPRICORN
22 December –
19 January
This can be a good time for selfdiscovery as well as assistance and support of others. You may get a chance to make peace with the past in some significant manner. It’s a good period for refocusing and re-establishing yourself and your goals. This month helps to soften your disposition and aids efforts to enjoy yourself, pursue your wishes, and ‘make nice’ with people in your life.
TAURUS
20 April –20 May
You've likely been focused on your career and life path, but in August focus could shift to your hopes and dreams, your friends, and pursuing causes. You'll have more energy and drive for your hobbies and just having more of a good time, wanting to get out more with people instead of staying at home. You may want to try new things and explore in a less serious, more curious way.
AQUARIUS
20 January –18 February
You’re more assertive and opportunities that emerge are a little clearer and more straightforward. You pay more attention to personal needs and wants, your image, appearance, and health. Personal magnetism moves up a notch. People notice you, want you, and want to be around you. You are more interested in the long term when it comes to love, although, friendship and camaraderie assume more importance during last week.
GEMINI
21 May –20 June
Financial matters seem very promising this month, but be careful that you don’t overdo spending or purchase large ticket items that you are likely to regret later. The job front will be successful and you may hear news you’ve been waiting to hear. You will be the most charming this month and let the positive energy keep flowing. Close relationships will benefit greatly.
PISCES
19 February –20 March
It’s not the most decisive month, but future decisions will be stronger if you take the time to reflect now. You might take this time to reassess your longer-term goals, group associations, friendships, educational situation, and communication projects. Your personal attraction is strong. Conversations with friends can be inspiring and stimulating. There may be opportunities to meet someone special through groups, acquaintances, and networking.
CANCER
21 June –22 July
You can be looking at money matters from a new and helpful perspective and motivation to turn over a new leaf regarding finances and relationship expectations can be strong. Turn your attention to things you already have and think about how you can rework or recycle them for best results. All-new endeavours look very appealing, it’s better to finish what you started before moving on.
ARIES
21 March –
19 April
You can feel particularly impassioned and motivated to learn, share ideas, and work on pet projects. You may come across a little abruptly at times, but you have a lot going on and much to keep you busy and engaged. Being around other people in groups may be how you feel best going into August, but as the month rolls on, you may want to be by yourself more, needing to reenergise with some rest and retreat.
