“
It was my absolute dream job and, 10 years later, still is.
“Work days are forever different, and I love it,” beams Tatum Savage, marketing and communications manager at M.A.C. Cosmetics. “We launch more than 50 collections a year, so when there about the same number of collections as there are weeks in the year no day is the same, there is always something to talk about. I’ve also taken on extra responsibility in my role, and recently hired the latest M.A.C. sister to join our team. Now is the time to get the wheels very much in motion which is super exciting!” Tatum reveals the M.A.C. team —“which has grown exponentially from what was considered a small brand to a global beauty phenomenon”— to be “one big family”. “That family ethos has been unwavering, despite our growth,” she adds. “I consider the girls at the office my sisters. We’ve shared life’s ups and downs together, we’ve travelled the world together, and built a business we are very proud of, together. “I also have the pleasure of working with some of New Zealand’s most talented, from makeup artists to fashion designers, writers to performers – many of whom have become my nearest and dearest friends. So yeah, in my eyes, I have the best job in the world!”
“
Tatum describes her move into the industry as serendipitous. She’d always dreamt of working in either fashion or beauty, but landed a job with Sony upon completing her master’s degree in marketing: “Had I not, I may never have known about the role at M.A.C because Sam, my employer at Sony, happened to be married to the then GM of M.A.C in NZ, Jodie. I was at their place for a Christmas barbecue and Jodie told me she was recruiting a communications manager and did I know anyone who may be interested, ‘wink-wink!’? It was my absolute dream job and, 10 years later, still is.” Tatum says that the industry has evolved to the point of almost doing an “about turn”. “Makeup was once exclusive, but is now so inclusive and full of diversity,” she continues. “The beauty world is now, or at least until the industry transforms again, about makeup that women want to wear as opposed to the old world of the industry

dictating the makeup ‘trend’. Makeup is about believability, authenticity and realness. Where women wear makeup to express their respective interpretations of femininity.” What does beauty mean to you? “The beauty industry provides people of all ages, all races and all genders an opportunity to express themselves in their most authentic self, which is certainly empowering in this digital selfie age where perfectionism is so prevalent. Beauty means many different things to me, but it will always mean empowerment.” Much has been made of the empowerment of women in recent months. As a successful woman, what are your thoughts on these movements? What have been your experiences, and are they things that need to be addressed in New Zealand? “I have been very fortunate to have been surrounded by successful women my whole life. I went to an all-girls school from the age of five and a message that rang loud and clear throughout was that women could be whatever and whoever they wanted. My parents resonated this message, so I’ve never felt disempowered or second-best to men. Don’t get me wrong, I adore men — many of my best friends are men and I cherish them — but I’ve always had a strong sense of self and not feeling like I’ve needed to measure myself or my success against a man. In my job I work with successful leaders every day – all of whom happen to be women. So, from my perspective, women have always been champions and leaders in their fields. However, I’m not disillusioned, I realise this is not representative of the majority of industries. The fact that women are still fighting for equal rights or have felt the necessity to silence any adversity they may have experienced in their life, especially to advance their career, is absurd. Time is surely up, and what has been the most emboldening message through all of this is seeing women stand strong together, come together to support one other and ensure we have each other’s backs. My mother ran successful businesses throughout my childhood and even after my parents divorced, she managed to keep me at the same school [Diocesan School for Girls] despite the financial strain — albeit hard at the time, this was an important life lesson for me.” Tatum tells me her childhood was generally a happy one, though “peppered with difficulty” that she feels made her tougher. She was 10 when her parents separated, and feels humbled by her mother’s struggle to provide her with the best education: “It made me want to work harder to achieve great things so she knew it was all worth it and she could be proud not only of me, but of herself. My education not only provided opportunities, it also provided the best group of friends — many of whom I am still best friends with. That is one of the greatest gifts my child-me could give my current-me.”

What were your dreams as a child? “I found a questionnaire recently that we filled out for our yearbook when we were in our last year of school. Back then I either wanted to be an ‘entertainment lawyer working in New York, a TV presenter, or working in PR.’ At least one of those dreams came true!”
says Tatum. “Undoubtedly one of the most perfect experiences of my life.” Other highs include Bali (“The place is just magical. We’re heading back this year and I cannot wait”) and Los Angeles (“My favourite city in the world hands down–I would move there in a heartbeat”).
Her dreams for her young children, Maddox and Valentina, are for them to be strong and resilient. “I feel that the world is so variable and ambiguous nowadays, on so many levels, that strength and resilience to weather uncertainty will become increasingly important,” says Tatum. Along with husband Gavin, she wishes to offer them as many experiences as possible, “so they can be awake to the world”.
Tatum met husband Gavin at a mutual friends’ barbecue — they bonded through their love of fast cars while watching Formula One: “He asked me to sit down next to him over dinner, and the rest is history!” He proposed ten years later in 2010, on Tatum’s birthday, at Ponsonby Rd Bistro with a cake that read ‘Will you marry me?’ “Our friends, old and new, have always been extremely important to us so the fact that some of our friends were present at the proposal meant a lot to me,” says Tatum. Key to their successful union, she reveals, is to communicate and approach projects together: “I would definitely say that is important for our marriage as we are at our best when we are developing together at the same pace and on the same path.”
Tatum says that she detests clichés, but wishes she grasped, way back when, that there was more to life than work. “I spent so long being diligent and striving for success without realising that success was right in front of me,” she admits, “in the form of my friends and family.” Now, days off are strictly reserved for them: “When we’re not hitting the beach or heading out for a café lunch, we’re barbecuing with family and friends. My parents were social and always involved me, so I think it’s important to include the kids in as much downtime as possible.” One of her favourite local destinations is Omaha Beach (“I was lucky to go there when I was growing up, and we try to head up there every summer as it is so great for kids!”), and as for overseas destinations, it’s France. “Gavin and I spent nearly a month there just before Maddox was born and travelled up from Nice through Provence to Paris and spent time in some pretty remote non-English speaking towns,”
Friends and family aside, I finish up by asking Tatum of the most beautiful things she’s experienced. “I’ve witnessed some extraordinary moments at M.A.C. where customers instore have broken down in tears because a feature or something they see as ‘imperfect’ that has previously affected their confidence has been transformed at the magical hands of a M.A.C artist,” she says. “I will never forget one customer writing to me after I shouted her a makeover instore saying, ‘Thank you, I found myself at M.A.C.' Those are among life’s best moments. When someone’s confidence is restored and they feel beautiful!” — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces Photography: Michael Lewis Makeup: Kiekie Stanners for M.A.C

A COMMON PROBLEM NOBODY WANTS TO TALK ABOUT
IT’S DIFFERENT TO MALE BALDNESS While men lose hair around their frontal hairline or in a patch or two on top of the head, female pattern hair loss is diffuse. There’s still hair to be seen, but more scalp is visible than before. Usually FPHL is seen on the top of the head, often appearing as a parting that gets wider and wider. 1000 Synthetic Hair Implantation by Dr Garsing Wong at Sapphire Clinic New Zealand
BEFORE
AFTER
A NEW APPROACH TO TREATMENT There are many hair treatment products on the market that claim to help FPHL, however they generally only strengthen the remaining hair. While some may promise regrowth, it rarely happens. There are also oral medications for FPHL, but they have limited success and can come with nasty side effects. But now there’s a new and instant solution for female hair thinning. At Sapphire Appearance Clinic on College Hill, Dr Garsing Wong has introduced a different approach to FPHL that provides immediate results — multiple implantation of biocompatible artificial hairs. It’s called Hairstetics™ and was recently approved for use in New Zealand. The system was developed in Israel by medical engineer Dvir Keren.
TRANSFORMS APPEARANCES AND LIVES Assisted by his wife Margaret, who’s also a qualified Hairstetics practitioner, New Zealand-born Garsing has already transformed the lives of several women with FPHL. What’s more, the clinic has also helped several men with diffuse baldness. “We’ve had great success with the Hairstetics procedures carried out so far. It’s wonderful for our clients to see such an instant transformation. They also find caring for their new hair easy — it feels and looks like real hair. Hair loss isn’t just a physical problem, it’s a psychological issue. The confidence that comes back after Hairstetics implantations is life changing.” INTRODUCING DR GARSING WONG Dr Garsing Wong is a registered medical practitioner in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. He graduated from the University of Auckland with a bachelor of medicine and surgery in 1991. He is also a Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine, Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of Urgent Care, Member of the International Hyperhidrosis Society and registered with New Zealand Medical Council and the General Medical Council, United Kingdom. ABOUT HAIRSTETICS HAIR IMPLANTS • Takes less than 30 minutes to implant 1000 hairs • Implants multiple hairs at once • Hairs are instantly anchored by a patented system • Available in a range of hair colours • For a more natural look, a blend of colours can be used • There are wavy implants for people with curly hair Want to know more about Hairstetics for female pattern hair loss? Women who suffer from FPHL find doing their hair an everyday challenge. Styling is decided by where the hair loss is and sometimes an unflattering ‘comb over’ is the only way to disguise obviously sparse areas. Nothing steals confidence quite like thinning hair.
“Hair implants for female pattern hair loss have been around for a while, but they were done one hair at a time, a process that’s time consuming and very expensive. The revolutionary thing about Hairstetics is that many hairs are implanted at once, and the unique anchoring system ensures an instant, secure result,” says Garsing.
//
Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is an esteem-stealing problem for many women. By the age of 50, around 40% of women are experiencing hair thinning. It gets worse as you get older.

TREATING FEMALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS:
MEET SISTER ACT: SID+JAC
Tanya and Jacqueline Smith
The idea began germinating when Tanya was playing professional basketball. “My body was depleted of minerals which meant my nervous system was going crazy. I went to the doctor who wanted to prescribe antidepressants, but I said 'No',” says Tanya. “I wanted a natural solution, so she suggested I try magnesium.”
With like-minds, they went to work. “We sourced the best magnesium and created #CALMYOURSPRAY The Spray and #SALTS,” says Jacqueline. “We trialed it for a year so we know first-hand it’s really, really good. The changes these products can make to your life are significant. You become more even, happier and you sleep better.”
//
“Now we want to educate people about the benefits of magnesium and it’s our dream to have Sid+Jac in every bathroom in the world,” says Tanya.

THE VERVE BEAUTY FEATURE
HOW IT ALL BEGAN The sisters founded Sid+Jac in 2015 and since then their topically applied, all-natural magnesium products have been causing a stir with those in the know.
SID+JAC Jacqueline and Tanya are born and bred Sydneysiders and hatched their plan while walking together on South Sydney’s Cronulla Beach. “We actually have two other sisters, Brooke and Alexis,” says Jacqueline. “Poor Mum and Dad,” Tanya chimes in. “However, Tanya and I have always been very close, there are two years between us and we have this ESP thing like twins do.”
Actually, to be more accurate, let us introduce Jacqueline and Tanya Smith. They named their company Sid+Jac after their inspiring grandfathers, the late Sidney and Jack.
FEB 2018
THE BENEFITS OF MAGNESIUM Tanya began taking magnesium orally and started feeling better. When researching the macro-mineral further she discovered it’s a nutrient the body needs in large amounts and is a co-factor in more than 300 of our body’s enzyme systems such as energy production, protein, muscle and nerve function, and the regulation of our blood glucose and blood pressure. “I’m sporty too — I played a lot of different sports, basketball, surf boat rowing, plus I danced and I initially used magnesium for weight management and to detox,” says Jacqueline. “Back then I used a generic brand from the supermarket.” “We used to live together and when we’d get uptight or stressed we’d always say, ‘You need to go and get into a magnesium bath!" says Tanya. “Our grandmothers always advised us to look to nature saying Mother Nature has many powerful resources that we aren’t using effectively today.” With this advice in mind, Tanya delved further into her magnesium research and learned that when you take magnesium via the mouth it goes first to the liver and can cause a bit of an upset stomach in some people. “But when it’s used topically it goes straight into the bloodstream and the body absorbs as much as you need,” she says. “When I spoke to Jac about it, a little seed started to sprout.”
#CALMYOURSPRAY A magnesium oil derived from Israel’s Dead Sea with a few drops of essential oil for fragrance. Spray it on: • when you’re feeling anxious • on your feet before bed • on your belly to relieve PMS • aches and pains • sore muscles #SALTS Epsom salts mined from the depths of the earth in Germany. Great as a bath or foot soak for: • muscle recovery • injury relief • cramping • inflammation • arthritis • muscle aches • sleep • migraines • head and back pain Luckily for Aucklanders, Orakei Village’s People Like Us now stocks the brand.

THE CONGRUENT FACELIFT SURGEONS' AND SCIENTIST'S NEW BOOK COLLABORATION IS PUBLISHED
Early January 2018 saw the publication of a new book by plastic surgeons Lawrence Ho (Sydney) and Michael F. Klaassen (Auckland), and bioengineering scientist Kumar Mithraratne (Auckland). The publisher, Springer, is Europeanbased and has a reputation for producing high quality medical and scientific textbooks. Klaassen, who practises from OneSixOne Gillies in Epsom says the book has been four years of focused collaboration between himself, his mentor in facelift surgery Dr Ho, now retired in Sydney, and Dr Mithraratne, a senior research fellow at Auckland’s Bioengineering Institute. Klaassen worked with and was influenced by Ho’s techniques of contour congruent facelifting from 2004, when he was based
in Sydney at a large teaching hospital. He met Kumar when he returned to Auckland in 2010 and was introduced to him when employed by Auckland University to lead the surgical skills centre in Mountain Road. Their book, titled The Congruent Facelift: A Three-dimensional View, is perhaps the first of its kind, combining nearly 80 years of collective facial rejuvenation experience, focused on the 3D anatomy and ageing of the human face, and benchmarking this against biomechanical models of the face. The three authors first presented their collaborative work to a select international audience gathered for a conference in Queenstown in April last
year, organised by Klaassen and titled The FACE2017. Since then, another paper written by Klaassen and Prof Jim Frame from England, 'The Concept of Aesthetica' was published in Surgical Clinics in October 2017. Klaassen emphasises that facelift surgery is not for everyone but the complex issues involved require both experience and surgical judgement gained over many years of practice. He hopes the new book will provide an essential guide to young plastic surgeons graduating from their training programmes both here in New Zealand and elsewhere. — Words: Michael Klaassen

TARGETED FAT ELIMINATION IS NOW A REALITY

Yvonne Marvin has been helping people to sculpt their bodies for more than 30 years. She’s an ex-bodybuilder, qualified personal trainer and mentor. Her clientele includes some of New Zealand’s best-loved celebrities and sports people.
BEFORE AND AFTER ONE TREATMENT OF FAT FREEZE BODY SHAPE COUNTOURING BY COOLBODY LIMITED
In all her years of helping women and men achieve their best body, Yvonne has gained a rare skill. She knows how to look at your physique and recognise what needs to be done. Her eye for visual balance in a body is legendary. Some areas might need to get smaller; others might need to be increased in size. Resistance training has always been her primary tool, however Yvonne recognises that it can’t do everything. BEFORE TREATMENT
“No matter how much you trim down or shape up, sometimes there will always be fat deposits that stubbornly refuse to budge. Exercise and careful eating will shed fat, but the reduction won’t always happen in the right places. But that’s changed now. I have a new trick up my sleeve for dealing with those hard-to-shift pockets of fat.” The new trick that Yvonne’s talking about is cool-assisted lipolysis non-invasive fat reduction. Not only does she recommend it to her clients, she’s gone a step further by becoming a trained practitioner for cool-assisted lipolysis at the CoolBody clinic on College Hill. “Our treatment is effective for arms, midriff, lower tummy, inner and outer thighs, calves, inner knees and love handles — those places where you can grab a handful or two. It also works for the under-chin area. The treatment is really targeted and it’s noninvasive, so there’s no downtime. “When you lose weight, your fat cells shrink — but they’re still there. At CoolBody, fat cells are actually eliminated and your body will never replace them. We’re seeing great results — the before and after pictures are amazing.” BEFORE AND AFTER ONE TREATMENT OF FAT FREEZE BODY SHAPE COUNTOURING BY COOLBODY LIMITED

6 WEEKS AFTER
HOW DOES IT WORK? Developed in Europe, the cool-assisted lipolysis equipment used at CoolBody is a clinically-proven and safe way to reduce localised pockets of fat. It has been used for more than one million successful treatments worldwide. • Cool-assisted lipolysis crystallises fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue. • After a treatment, the crystallised fat cells break down and are gradually eliminated by your body’s lymphatic system. This elimination process is called apoptosis and takes six to 12 weeks. • Fat cells that are eliminated this way never return. They are gone forever. • Different applicators are used for each area of the body. WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED AT COOLBODY? Treatments at CoolBody clinic are for those pesky areas of fat that you thought were yours forever. • Double chin, the most ageing fat deposit of them all • Arms, so that you can confidently wear sleeveless clothes • Upper, mid and lower back • Love handles and muffin tops • Upper and lower abdomen • Inner and outer thighs GET A FREE • Calves and inner knees

BROWS SPEAK VOLUMES
If you had told me before Christmas that I would start 2018 by getting ‘tattooed’, I would have laughed at the very idea. But being one for a bit of adventure and always reluctant to turn down a new experience, when the opportunity to have my brows microbladed presented itself, I thought to myself: "It’s a fresh new year, time for a fresher, younger look." There were times when it was proper and fashionable to sport pencil thin eyebrows: Mine being naturally thin and pretty insubstantial were totally ‘du jour, then. Things change and thin eyebrows no longer cut it. The look now is thicker, more natural, but still groomed, a look I have long hankered after. So it was on a beautiful summer’s day a little over two weeks ago that I first met Melissa at her lovely salon in Helensville, a little over two hours later, I was the proud owner of a newer lusher look and a set of perfectly and professionally microbladed brows.
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT MELISSA
I did not know Melissa very well, but from the get go I could tell that she is a perfectionist, one who is: (a) deeply passionate about what she does; and (b) exceptionally
professional. I was emailed heaps of info up front, and Melissa answered any question I had promptly. She followed up emails with phone calls, and generally put me at ease. On the day of treatment, the professionalism continued. Not only does she know what she is doing, but is also a lovely person to boot, friendly, easy to chat to, and a great sense of humour. By the time she came to do the microblading of my brows, I felt totally comfortable and confident in the outcomes.
WAS IT WORTH IT? ABSOLUTELY!
At first — I could not believe the face looking back at me from the mirror. Gone were the skimpy uneven brows — and in their place two newly minted far more even and bushier looking eyebrows. Not quite Frida Kahlo! But then who could beat her look ever? I can see that (even though relatively unobtrusive) they add better definition to my face as well as helping my eyes to stand out more. I am now on day 16, and well past the official end of the healing period, and I could not be happier with the results. When I in the mirror after getting up in the morning I say to myself, ‘And I really did wake up like this!” — Words: Fran Ninow

tattooing they are just ‘different’ techniques. Microblading brows gives the most natural looking tattooed brow. It is performed using a hand tool not a tattoo machine.
HOW IS A COSMETIC TATTOO DIFFERENT FROM A NORMAL TATTOO? Cosmetic tattooing uses different
pigments to body tattooing: the pigments are semipermanent which is ideal when tattooing the face. The face will continue to change as the skin ages over time, and so as the skin changes we are able to make adjustments to the brow, eyeliner and lips to suit.
WHAT IS MEDICAL TATTOOING? Medical tattooing is a simulation or camouflage technique that uses 3D tattooing, for example, simulating a nipple and areola for clients after cancer and breast reconstruction. Some patients are left without a nipple and areola after surgery, so these can then be simulated with 3D tattooing with very realistic results. Camouflaging can for example be used for a cleft lip; I redesign the lip contour to camouflage the scarring and puckering and simulate the look of full lips that appear more symmetrical. I also do scalp micro-pigmentation. This is used where there is hair loss: here I can simulate a hair follicle with tattooing, resulting in the look of a shaved head with a ‘five o’clock shadow’ and a restored hairline.

There is no reason why we need to create out-of-reach ideals and far-fetched expectations with ourselves, simply because we feel the new year should be a whole new beginning. Didn’t we arrive here, through the doors of 2018, in one relatively whole piece? I certainly hope so! So, we did something right, correct? Perhaps we could have done it better. We get sick of ourselves, whether visually, emotionally or mentally, and quite often reach for the tallest branch before enjoying the fruits on each branch before we get there. Nothing is worse than the let-down when those goals or expectations go flying out the door with the realisation that another new year is about to dawn! Do not stress. That should be the mantra for all. We should all try to better ourselves, become someone we are proud of being, working on the inside so we can be better on the outside, and then better for those around us. It is quite simple. Replenish our minds with the things that can make us happy, provide happiness and challenges, work on our contribution to others and how we deal with situations, so we too can feel fulfilled and by that, bring positivity to ourselves and others in difficult circumstances. Rejuvenate our souls however we must, that benefits our health and mind, because these two things work together whether we like it or not. Most of all give ourselves time. It is the hardest thing to, but one of the most important. There is a lot we are faced with at times, and allowing ourselves peace and quiet to do what we feel is important, whether it be 30 minutes or a day, it will provide perspective and reflection — time is a healer and a problem solver, you cannot spend it more wisely than by allowing yourself this freedom. Restore those things which are good in yourself if they have been lost or temporarily put on the way-side, and keep building new foundations for other improvements and continual growth of all that you are. There is no time limit, just day by day, piece by piece — there is no better time to start than now, and there is no final date for completion. And that’s really the best part.

THE TRUE ESSENCE OF YOGA In the hurly-burly pace of life in the 21st century, we’ve cottoned on to the magic of yoga, but have we got it right? According to Jennifer Allen, founder of Jayayoga, a centre for yoga and yoga teacher training, for most of us, the answer would be 'no'. “People are so time poor, they want to de-stress, meditate and exercise in an hour after work,” she says. “Meditation and yoga are buzzwords the world has grabbed hold of and gone, ‘Yeah!' As a result, some Western teachers are teaching yoga as a way to exercise rather than a way to shift mindset.”
NO PAIN, NO GAIN
“We’ve been living in an era of no pain, no gain so we ‘do’ yoga,” she adds. “Some people treat yoga like a fitness class and are looking for the total package which leads to one of two things happening: boredom or injury. That should never, ever happen.”
FROM THEATRE TO YOGA
A love and deep understanding of yoga came to Jennifer after a career as a performer. Originally from Washington, she was working on a cruise ship when she met her Kiwi husband Cameron. “He played in the band of the show I was in,” says Jennifer. Marriage followed six months later and a subsequent move to New York City saw Jennifer teaching pilates and yoga amidst her performing work. “I still loved the stage, but I was in my mid-20s, had a spinal injury and my body was starting to age,” she says. “Yoga allowed me to express myself in similar ways to dance without the high expectations and judgement. Back then I was all about downward dogs and handstands.”
MOVING TO NEW ZEALAND
The couple came to New Zealand for Christmas 2008 and never left. “Cameron wanted to do his postgraduate degree,” says Jennifer. “Those first five years were difficult. It was a culture shock, and my close family were there and I was here. It didn’t snow at Christmas, cars drove on the other side of the road and I couldn’t find what I wanted at the supermarket. Ten years on I’m a barefoot, beach-going Kiwi, and mum to little Kiwis Matilda (8) and Theo (4 ½).”
BYRON YOGA CENTRE
Keen to do more yoga training Jennifer undertook a nineweek intensive at Byron Yoga Centre in Byron Bay. “It’s the longest running yoga school in Australia. John Ogilvie, the founder, became my mentor,” says Jennifer. “That was a turning point for me, I found my dharma (life purpose).”
Later, John invited Jennifer to join his teaching staff and she loved it. “Teaching teachers was where I was supposed to be,” she says. “Through pregnancy and newborns, I taught in Bali, Jakarta, and Australia. However, the travel began wearing and while I agreed with John’s philosophies, my own were forming partly due to my spinal injury, my other teachers, and my performing career.” Studying yoga therapy with Maria Kirsten and women’s health yoga with Ana Davis also opened her eyes. “After pregnancy and birth my body changed, and I realised pre and postnatal was an area that needed expansion,” she says. “New mothers need permission to let go of expectations put on them.”
JAYAYOGA
It was Cameron who suggested she start Jayayoga (pronounced Ji-a). “The name is an anagram of Jennifer Allen Yoga Auckland, but it’s also the Sanskrit word for 'blessing' or, in other languages, 'hallelujah',” says Jennifer. “The tagline is ‘safe sustainable yoga for life’ because no one should ever be injured. “Yoga isn’t about putting your leg behind your head or bending like a pretzel, looking good in a pair of leggings, or juice fasting. The point of yoga is to open the body so it can breathe which naturally leads to meditation. Less is more. When effort goes the magic happens.”
THE ESSENCE OF YOGA
“Do you need 90 minutes of power yoga? No. Will five minutes to relax and breathe work? Yes,” says Jennifer. “It’s that simple. All my teachers and I are doing at Jaya is offering suggestions to navigate your personal path of yoga. It doesn’t matter to me if you’re in my class to move with my offerings or spend the time lying on your back sharing the energy; it’s all about permission. People say, ‘Wow, that’s revolutionary.’ To me, it’s common sense. It’s about allowing the path of least resistance and surrendering to the universe.” Jennifer is clear: “Everybody can benefit: women, men, office workers, builders, mothers, yogis, and most especially people who have shied away because they think they can’t do it. I hope over my lifetime we will deliver that message one studio and one teacher training at a time.” — Words: Jenna Moore

THE WEIRDEST PLACES PEOPLE GET NIPPED AND TUCKED A cosmetic surgery nurse and founder of Trusted Surgeons shares what she has seen...
The world of plastic and cosmetic surgery is vast and people’s reasons for having various types of procedures is just as expansive. Most people are aware of the most common types of surgery performed by plastic and cosmetic surgeons but there is another whole world of body modification procedures on offer. It takes all sorts to make the world go around and here is a list of some of the weirder things people ask for: SIX PACK SCULPTING: traditional liposuction, normally used to just flatten areas, is used to etch out lines in the abdomen to create the look of a six or eight pack. This is an advanced liposuction technique and is much more involved than your everyday simple liposuction. This is becoming more popular especially for men that try and try to attain the perfect six pack but can’t quite get there. ASIAN BLEPHAROPLASTY: this is commonly termed as double-eyelid surgery or double fold surgery and is a commonly performed cosmetic procedure amongst Asians. This procedure generally makes the patient look more bright-eyed and the eye appears larger and more feminine. It is said that applying eyeliner is easier. Ultimately this makes the patient feel more attractive by achieving a certain look. BELLY BUTTON SURGERY: there are two types of people in this world: innies and outies. Being an innie myself, I assume this is what normal people have. So, for me it’s not so weird for people with outies trying to join the innie camp. Outside of the obvious aesthetic look, it turns out (pardon the pun) that a lot of outie belly buttons are small umbilical hernias. A surgeon can perform a umbilicoplasty to repair this hernia and create the more aesthetically pleasing innie.
EYE IMPLANTS: these silicone-based iris implants are inserted into the eye to change the colour of your iris. Not sure what else to say here but there must be people out there wanting to permanently change the colour of their eyes. Each to their own! FAKE DIMPLES: some people are born with dimples; the rest must have them surgically created by a plastic surgeon. This minimally invasive procedure known as a dimpleplasty, leaves no visible scar as the incision is made on the inside of the cheek in the mouth. A small suture is used to create the dimple, which is generally only seen when smiling. EYELASH TRANSPLANT: Everyone has heard about hair transplants on the top of your head but now you can have hair transplants to bulk up your thinning eyelashes. As we get older, eyelashes start thinning and even fall out. This hair transplant gives back your youthful look but does come at a price. Normal hair follicles continue to grow and need to be trimmed regularly. Curling may also be required. EAR POINTING: it is exactly as it sounds. A pointed ear is created by taking a small wedge out of the ear and sowing the remaining edges together. This creates a Spock-like look from the cult series Star Trek. If you feel the need to permanently look like a pixie or elf, then this is the procedure for you. PALM LINE MODIFICATION: In Japan, there are people that surgically have the lines on their hands modified in the belief that it will change their fate. Way to go to pull the wool over your palm reader's eyes.
KNEE LIFT: apparently this is a thing to make your knees appear more youthful. For those that are concerned over the look of their knees, the loose saggy skin is removed, and the remaining skin is stitched back together tight like a tummy tuck. But unlike a tummy tuck, where the scar can be hidden in your panty line, there is no escaping the scar under your knee (unless you routinely wear super knee-high socks). TONGUE SPLITTING: again as the name suggests, the tongue is split to a snake or lizard like appearance. This is not for everyone and certainly not functional, but it is one of the fastest growing body modifications sought after. Part of its popularity comes about from it easily being hidden away, and the surgery is quick and simple. When you get bored of this modification, its easily reversed. The first recorded split was in 1996, by a body piercer in the US. SCROTOX: yes, its Botox for the scrotum. Squirmish gentleman please look away now! Personally, I struggle to see someone getting this, but some people go to the extreme for beauty. This procedure relaxes all the skin of the scrotum and creates a smooth like appearance making it appear larger and even make the testicles hang lower. Say goodbye to wrinkly scrotums! Who comes up with this?! Surgery, no matter how small, is serious business. As always, the decision to have surgery of any sort requires a detailed discussion with your surgeon to discuss your wishes and make sure you understand the risks and benefits of your chosen procedure. Do your research and always choose a Trusted Surgeon.

THE VERVE BEAUTY FEATURE //
Summer looks are effortless and tousled, providing a seamless but effective look for great styling. THE MESSY PIXIE A wonderful cut, if you have the right face shape, which can frame and let your finest features shine. This is also a great look for those with slightly finer hair and restricted by time, or if you wish to just go for the less structured look. Suitable for those more mature ladies, as well as the young. Think Michelle Williams and the very lovely Dame Judy Dench. It does take regular maintenance, probably four-weekly trips to your salon. SIDE ON, ON POINT There are many great styles which incorporate an edgy look for those feeling adventurous. Consult with your hairdresser and discuss what would suit you and your hair the best. The unstructured side bob is a great look. One side shaved look, and hair is flipped over to create a longer uneven and textured look on the other side. Can be worn in multiple ways to create a fun and dynamic cut. THE SHAGGY BOB An undone bob, a shorter look that can hit just under the chin line or just above the shoulder. Textured layers provide volume and bounce. Can be achieved for most hair styles with a variation, but suitable for medium-to-thicker hair for maximum shag! Bangs can be added to give that finished look. BOHO CHIC OR SLEEK The super sleek longer cut, which can be parted in the middle for a sleek look for curled ends scrunched to provide a boho look. Great for longer cuts and styles. For a more tousled look, slightly curled ends for that messy carefree look. Warm blonde, rich browns, fiery ombres and fashion colours from bolds to pastels, are all the trend this year. Ultimately choose what suits you, what is realistic for your hair type and condition and then run with it and add a little spark into your summer for 2018! — Words: Donna Malneek

FROM ANTIQUITY TO PERMANENCY, LET'S MAKEUP “Makeup is a mask you hide behind,” writes Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett in the Guardian, “that gets you ready to face the world, or something that you deploy to use as a weapon — to attract a partner, to intimidate, shock and amaze.” That theory is backed by a 2012 study reported in the Scientific American which concluded lipstick to be “deeply rooted in women’s mating psychology”. But Kerry Forlan of Glamour magazine disagrees. Getting ready for a dinner party, the writer’s partner once informed her that she looked better without. “It’s sweet that he doesn’t think I need lipstick to be beautiful,” she mused. “But, in the end, it isn’t about him, or any guy.” All of her memories of beauty and makeup, she writes, are about “intimate female relationships”.
come to be associated only with prostitutes. But it was the rise of Hollywood in the 1920s and ‘30s that ensured makeup’s socially accepted status for all as shop shelves soon filled with affordable, mass marketed products that enabled everyday ladies to recreate the movie star look.
The Ancient Egyptians, famed for those sultry, smoky eyes, were the first to master the art of beauty, using sophisticated chemistry techniques to create makeups made from the likes of ground nuts, minerals, animal fats and oils. Cleopatra’s lipstick was crafted from ground carmine beetles — others used a clay mixture to attain vibrant colouring. Men were as partial to the process as women. That iconic black eye paint, known as kohl, was mixed from lead, copper, ash, and burnt almonds, used not only for aesthetics, but ward off evils spirits and the sun’s harsh glare. Scientists now believe it make have also acted as an antibacterial agent.
Evolving further, the latest craze is the for permanent makeup, also known as semi-permanent makeup, micropigmentation, microblading or cosmetic tattooing. “But it’s completely different to traditional tattooing,” says Juliette Miller, who owns permanent makeup company, Perfection Enhanced. “The equipment is completely different, using either a digital machine or micro-blading — a scalpel-like tool. It’s a far more delicate process than tattooing, and doesn’t go anywhere near as deep.”
Around 3,000BC, the Chinese are thought to have been the first to paint their fingernails — used to signify social class. In Japan, early geishas’ lipstick was crafted from crushed safflower petals, and rice powder used to whiten their faces. The Greeks and Romans used similar techniques to the Egyptians, but around the Middle Ages, Europeans seriously frowned upon the application of makeup. Seen as deceptive, even sinful, and to be worn only by prostitutes, others that did use it went for the less-is-more, natural look — think of the ghostly white face of Queen Elizabeth I. Thanks in part to the flamboyance of the Renaissance, striking makeup became fashionable once more across Europe, but come the 19th century, it was declared vulgar by Queen Victoria, and seriously frowned upon in the social circles of the upper classes. For a while, the suffragettes reclaimed the use of lipstick as a bold statement of independence — a symbolic act of rebellion during a time when makeup had once more
More recently, the digital era has breathed new life into the industry, with the likes social media channels awash with makeup tutorials, and, interestingly, with gender fluidity becoming ever more embraced, a greater amount of men using it — just like the Egyptians who started it all.
Is it painful? “Not if you use the right anaesthetics!” Juliette, who has been in the beauty industry for 23 years, uses topical creams that contain the same ingredients as dentist injections to numb the areas, often so successfully that her clients fall asleep during the procedure. Juliette trained to be a micro-pigmentation technician at leading London institution Natural Enhancement, where she was also the training manager and business development manager. She reveals that the procedure, which generally begins to fade after 1-3 years, is also a great option for those who suffer from alopecia, or who have gone through chemotherapy. “It’s not just about traditional makeup,” she adds. “There is the medical side to, and many of my clients are older and may have lost their eyesight or have developed the shakes or arthritis and can no longer apply makeup properly. It’s a way of bringing back their confidence, making them feel like a woman, and, most importantly, good about themselves.” More information can be found at perfectionenhanced.co.nz

JULIETTE’S PERMANENT MAKEUP TIPS
The US and UK strictly regulate their permanent makeup industries and all technicians must have insurance in order to attain a license for their premises and be either a qualified nurse or beauty therapist with a background in the anatomy and physiology of the skin, but no such rules apply in New Zealand. “Anyone wanting to have it done should do their research,” says Juliette. "Ask about hygiene practices such as if sterilised needles are used; to see a portfolio of pictures with before and after images; to see qualifications; ensure there’s a proper consultation and that medical forms are filled out. You should think of it as a cosmetic medical treatment than just a beauty one, and consider that there are a number of things that can go wrong. Remember, a cheap job can end up being expensive further down the road — but, if all goes as it should, you can wake-up with makeup that is smudge-free 24/7!”
THE FABULOUS NATALYA PURCHASE Tired of her make-up artistry business being undercut, and sick of the industry catering to young girls who “wanted to look like Kim Kardashian” while ignoring the over-30s who “wanted to look like a fresher version of ourselves”, Natalya Purchase set up female-only Facebook group ‘Thirty Plus and Fabulous’ in 2016 and secured 3,000 members within the first week. At the time of writing membership was just shy of 28,000, and has spread well beyond the realms of beauty advice. “That evolution was not part of the original plan,” admits mother-of-four Natalya. “It just evolved. It is a safe space where women can comment and chat about anything.” Natalya also regularly reviews a range of products, which then offers as prizes and giveaways. I ask her why she believes the group has been so embraced.
“I’m not entirely sure why,” says Natalya. “But it has definitely hit a sweet spot, something that many business owners have acknowledged, even though it was a bit by accident!” What makes it even sweeter for Natalya is that within the first few days of opening the group, a “very well-known marketing expert” messaged to tell her that she hated what she was doing, and that it was a ridiculous idea. “Because she was so well-known — and somebody whose services I was going to invest in once I had the money — it felt like a real kick in the gut,” says Natalya. “I was questioning myself and on the verge of shutting it all down. But then I thought, ‘You know, I have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain, what was the worst that could happen?’ I think she now really despises what I’ve got.”

I wanted to create a space where women felt respected, to create camaraderie.
“
// FEB 2018
HAVE YOU HEARD FROM HER SINCE?
“Yes. Afterwards she was causing disharmony by getting people who work for her to badmouth my group, which is really unusual. It was a little disturbing, actually. She is exactly the type of person that we warn the group we will not tolerate, so it was a good lesson in a way. She kind of forced me to plunge into the deep end, so I should thank her really.” Eliminating online abuse within the group is paramount. “I wanted to create a space where women felt respected,” says Natalya. “To create camaraderie. Somewhere with discussions and debates but where opinions are served with kindness. We delete people instantly who say anything negative about someone. This is one of the few spaces on social media where you will not get attacked.”
WERE YOU ALREADY A SOCIAL MEDIA WHIZ?
“Not at all, I totally winged my way into it! I still have my original beauty business page — just like everyone else I had my loyal customer base, and just like everyone else I struggled with getting myself out there and getting known. So, it did surprise me, how popular the group became. It surprised everybody.” There are no ‘typical’ members of the group, with a good mix of married and single women “across a huge spectrum of society”, including mums, businesswomen and ladies from the media, most mainly in their 30s and 40s. Topics like feminism and the gender divide have rarely been out of the news in recent months, and I ask if it’s been discussed among the women of the group. “Yes, but we realise that politics can become very heated, so we always make sure that all of the moderators are on board,” says Natalya. “It’s about teaching
people that strong opinions can still be delivered with kindness. We’re not a women’s lib group, and whenever anyone has a moan about their husband, another ten usually pipe up to say how wonderful their husbands are. There are no burning bras!” Another of the group’s focus has been to organise coffee meetings, which take place all around the country. “In this age, we are the most connected we have ever been in history, but we are the most disconnected in real time,” says Natalya. “We were hearing a lot about women being lonely and how they love the group as it is the only place they can go to feel connected and not be judged, so I thought how nice it would be if they could meet each other in person.”
IT MUST BE A HARD BUSINESS TO SWITCH OFF FROM, IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE? “I’m having my first complete break in nearly a year-and-a-half, but it’s to focus on other parts of the business, like the coffee groups. It’s a social media group, and it is very social and because it’s my baby I always feel as though I have to be involved — but there are more than 250,000 interactions on the page every 28 days. Luckily, my moderators are amazing!” On a lesser scale, Natalya has members from all over the world, most notably the US, UK, Australia and South Africa, but hopes to eventually develop the group into a fully global network. “It would be cool if we could expand,” she says. “But it’s about getting the foundations really locked in first, otherwise it could get very messy.”
But a good excuse to organise some of those coffee meetings overseas, instead. — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

“
“I can’t wear a bra because it’s backless…” She swapped it out for something dark. “… but this second one is a little low-cut. Bra or no bra?’ Think man, think. The fate of the universe depended on the answer to this question.” — Kate Meader, Even the Score —
A HISTORY OF SUPPORT, BRA In 1977, keen jogger Lisa Lindahl, fed up of the discomfort of running in an underwire bra, set about designing the world’s first sports bra, but the inspiration for it was to come from two of the most incongruous of sources: her (now former) husband, and his jockstrap. Lindahl, a University of Vermont employee at the time, had floated the idea of a cooling, supportive, chafe-free bra to her costume-designing friend Polly Smith, but they came up short until her husband playfully slung his jockstrap over his chest and suggested that they try that instead. “I put it over my chest and it went right over my breast,” Lindahl tells the New York Post. “I looked at Polly and said, ‘Oh my word!’” The pair set about stitching a couple of jockstraps together, and, hey presto, the Jogbra was born. The $22 item revolutionised the lives of many women, Lindahl notes, making “sports so much more within reach” and removing barriers. They sold the company to what would become fitness giants Champion. As gym culture took off throughout the 1980s, so newer pieces were crafted using materials such as Spandex, and have now become fashionable work-out items in the form of crop tops — a development that satisfies Lindahl’s dream of, like men, “being able to run without a shirt on”. The very first bras were likely worn by the Ancient Greeks and consisted of tight bands of fabric — either wool or linen — wrapped around the torso and pinned at the back. Amazingly it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that anything resembling a bra was born—named, rather unflatteringly, the breastbag; and in the centuries that followed, women had to contend with restrictive corsets. A handful of brasserie — which comes from the French for ‘upper arm’ — designs were created in Europe around the turn of the 20th century, and Vogue magazine was the first to mention it, in 1907 (making an appearance in the Oxford English Dictionary three years later), but the creation of the modern-day bra is generally credited to Mary Phelps Jacob, who was granted a US patent on 3 November 1914.
Jacob — who later changed her name to Caresse Crosby — was inspired by the fashion of the time, notably the rise of slim-cut dresses with plunging necklines. Dressing for a Manhattan debutante ball in 1913, the 19-year-old New York socialite grew frustrated with how her whale-boned corset and undergarment was ruining the finish of her ball gown, recalling in her autobiography, The Passionate Years: “The eyelet embroidery of my corset-cover kept peeping through the roses around my bosom.” She instructed her maid to fetch a couple of handkerchiefs, some ribbon and a needle and thread, and, from those she fashioned a make-do bra that was “delicious”: “I could move freely, a nearly naked feeling, and in the glass I saw that I was flat and proper.” Over the following months, Jacob developed the design further, introducing the likes of elastic bands, and, emboldened by the feedback from her highsociety friends, filed for a patent for a “backless brasserie” on 12 February 1914. Aesthetics aside, one of the bra’s biggest advantages was the physical relief. “It was lightweight and you would tie it around your neck,” Lynn Boorady, fashion and textile technology chair and associate professor at Buffalo State University, tells Time. “It looks like a halter top bikini, I guess, but not quite so conforming.” But she doubts many ladies of the time would have worn the item in pubic, but definitely in the house as “most women loosened their corsets at home just to be comfortable”. A surprising accelerator for the acceptance of the bra was the onset of World War I, with demand for metal high, the metal for corsets was commandeered to help combat the Nazis. Even more surprising — and a little sad — is that Jacob barely made a profit from her patent, selling the rights to the Warner Brothers Corset Company for the modern-day amount of $29,000. She once commenting, according to Linda Hamalian in her biography of Jacob, The Cramoisy Queen: A Life of Caresse Crosby that “I can’t say the brasserie will ever take as great a place in history as the steamboat, but I did invent it”.

TRENDING ABROAD I'm writing this months' column from the couch in our AirBnB in London. I've spent the last five weeks travelling from NYC, around Europe and to the UK with my husband and son — it's been amazing. Two years of saving and planning finally happened! I had great visions of being very stylish while travelling, did my research before packing (well, looked at street style photos from northern winters) but if I'm really honest, I've spent much of the trip feeling a bit of a frump (and calling BS on those photos of girls with bare ankles). With temperatures ranging from minus-14 in NYC, minus-six to a high of two in Prague, to a whopping high of 16 in Rome, it’s been a bit of a style struggle – especially for an Aucklander who never really needs to dress for the cold. I've just wanted to be warm each day. The other thing I've had to deal with is boredom with the contents of my suitcase. Of course, I've been able to relieve myself of that a little with shopping! Apart from loads of big, snuggly knitwear, here’s what I've been seeing in the stores on my trip: • Sparkly shoes - from large diamantés crusted on trainers to glitter or lurex threads on boots, shoes are full-on disco darlings of fun. Combat boots abound, too. • Magenta, yellow, cobalt, orange and red – bold hues have
been everywhere in everything which is great in winter. • High-waisted, wide legged pants in everything from bold stripes to florals and plains. Often with an activewear inspired stripe down the side, worn with heels or flats. • Stirrup pants. • Multi-coloured fake fur jackets. • Blouses and shirts rather than tops, often with tie detailing at the neck. One thing we can be sure of, we’re not ‘behind’ in New Zealand and I've no doubt that these things are currently hanging on the new season racks of boutiques as I type this. So, even though the weather is still hot and there's more summer to be had, get out and take a look at what you’ll be wearing when the chilly days hit. Meanwhile, I need to pack some new boots into my bag… I'm brimming with inspiration from my travels and would love to help you look amazing this year. If you'd like a hand looking your very best, get in touch. Check out testimonials from many delighted clients at signaturestyle.co.nz or call me on 09 529 5115 to pop into my 330 Parnell Road studio for a no-obligation coffee and chat. I look forward to hearing from you!

REMUERA A PRECIOUS DESTINATION There aren’t many places that could lay claim to being a ‘centre of excellence’ when it comes to custom-made fine jewellery, but with no less than six renowned jewellers located on its main road, Remuera has certainly earned that title. The affluent suburb has a long history of attracting prestigious manufacturing jewellers and luxury brands. Sanders of Remuera Jewellers has been a much-loved part of the fabric of Remuera for 25 years and things look set to stay that way for many more years now that owners Mark and Cheryl have welcomed their daughter Lucy into the fold. Likewise, Antheas has been wowing Remuera and Auckland with large diamonds and custom-made bespoke jewellery since 1980. Antheas is now run by third generation family owner Monette and her husband David. It sparkles, it’s gorgeous, it’s Antheas. Another store that mixes things up a little is Jems of Remuera, specialising in vintage, antique and bespoke jewellery. They have two master jewellers that work with them to create the perfect piece. John has been in the industry for over 27 years. Together with his team you will find the perfect gift. Established
in 1981, Browns has become a household name in Remuera and is a one-stop-shop for designer clothing and jewellery. There are newcomers too. The perfect space has been a seven year wait for Alluvium owners Charles and Melanie Panaho, who were thrilled to finally make the shift from Newmarket. They’ve transformed the old Dove hospice shop into an intimate showroom complete with an on-site workroom housing their own master goldsmith and gemstone setter. The line up wouldn’t be complete without luxury watches. Industry renowned for his prodigious knowledge, Marcus Alexander and his wife, Rebecca, own About Time, which boasts an extensive gallery of secondhand watches including Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Tag Heuer, Zenith and Panerai. From top quality timepieces to exquisite one-of-akind custom jewellery, Remuera sits at the top of any must-visit list for those with impeccable style that require expert advice and faultless service.

REFERENCE CHECK
52
TIPS FOR RENTING YOUR PROPERTY THAT WILL SAVE YOU FROM DISASTER
Always ask prospective tenants for references and always call the referees. It is not advisable to rely on your own assessment of prospective tenants as this approach can leave you open to problems down the track.
CREDIT CHECK
Referees may be reluctant to make negative comments about a colleague or friend, so it is vital that you also perform a credit check on prospective tenants. One-off credit checks can be made by most debt collecting agencies, but you need the tenant’s permission first.
TENANT CHECK
One should undertake the following: Background checks, social media, police, credit, verify their ID, just to name a few. If you are using a professional property management company they will undertake these and more on your behalf. Remember to get the tenants written permission first.
OUTLINE EXPECTATIONS TENANCY AGREEMENT
CLEARLY
IN
THE
The tenancy agreement is the place to outline what you expect from your tenants. The agreement must state clearly if there are to be no pets, parties or smoking, the maximum number of occupants, and so on. Failure to make specific conditions clear can lead to dispute and if the matter goes to the Tenancy Tribunal, an unclear agreement puts you in a precarious position. Also be aware that neither party can sign away their rights under the Residential Tenancies Act. Even if both parties agree to a clause at the time of signing a tenancy agreement, this clause may not be upheld if a dispute is taken to the Tenancy Tribunal.
OPT FOR A FIXED-TERM TENANCY OVER A PERIODIC TENANCY
You may have a good tenant who is going to pay the rent and look after your property, but if you sign them onto a periodic tenancy instead of a fixed term tenancy they could leave with just 21 days’ notice. This gives you very little time to find a new tenant and could cost you in lost rent. A fixed term tenancy, enables you to find new tenants before the current tenants move out, potentially saving you thousands of dollars. It also enables you to protect against the property becoming vacant at a time of the year when tenanting is difficult, such as late November/December or mid-winter.
TAKE THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE BOND
Many private landlords feel that no bond, or only two weeks bond is necessary. But it’s very easy for a property to be damaged, potentially leaving the owner deeply out of pocket. Given that tenants are being given the right to live in an asset worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, it’s advisable to insist on taking the maximum bond possible of four weeks.
LODGE THE BOND WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING AND HOUSING
Always lodge the bond. Not lodging the bond with the Department of Building and Housing is illegal, and means you could be fined up to $1,000, if a tenant takes you to the Tenancy Tribunal. The actual amount is at the discretion of the adjudicator, but you could also lose many hours dealing with the tenants and attending the hearing.

HOME RETOUCHER Monique Laloli is an expert in the world of photo retouching and manipulation and has gained worldwide recognition working with some of the top real estate agencies in New York. Laloli gained her invaluable skills by working for a photo agency on the North Shore, then by working at the New Zealand Herald for six years. In 2012 Monique travelled to New York City and has been there ever since. She began working as the lead retoucher for MW Studio, an architectural and real estate company, founded by Michael Weinstein, who is one of the top architectural photographers in New York City. MW Studio has their own unique formula for making sure their photos stand out against the competition. Instead of solely working with one image, Monique layers four to six different exposures into each ďŹ le. This method ensures that no details are lost and the views from the windows are clear and never blown out. Unlike HDR, the layering method means everything will be more precise and you have complete control over the ďŹ nished image. Since working at MW Studio, Monique has worked on many homes that belong to celebrities; including Jennifer Aniston, Jon Bon Jovi and John Legend.
Attention to detail is one of the most important aspects of the job, as well as an eye for colour and how the overall photo should look. The main goal is for each photo to look well balanced and inviting to the eye. A fantastic looking photo can mean the difference between getting interested buyers to view the property or not. Monique enjoys making creative decisions for each photo, whether she feels it should look light and bright or edgier and more moody. To get a better understanding of the whole photography process, Monique has accompanied Michael on many of his photoshoots and helped set up each room so it is shown to it's best advantage. In the past year, MW Studio has expanded their services to include photos taken by a drone. FAA approved drone pilot, Tom Urban of Urban Aerials, is able to capture images such as large estates perched high on a cliff. Monique feels extremely grateful that she gets to work for Michael Weinstein. She says, "The experience I have gained has been invaluable and the high standard that is expected just makes me want to push myself more and learn new editing techniques." JOURNEYS
My Croatian friends speak with such passion of their homeland. Armed with a comprehensive ‘you simply must visit, must taste, must try, must call my auntie’ list, and despite reluctance to join a cruise, I was actually predisposed to have a great time. Pleasantly surprised by both the ship and my light, airy, air conditioned cabin, I could feel the first of my prejudices falling away. With a maximum of 38 guests on board, a spacious sun deck with platform and ladders at the rear to allow swimming directly from the ship into the warm and sparkling waters of the Adriatic, a comfortable bar and restaurant and free wifi, I could tell I was going to struggle to maintain my disdain. The cruising can only be described as leisurely. Breakfast and lunch is included on board while in the evenings we moor in small towns, going ashore to sample fresh seafood and other tasty delicacies in tiny restaurants, often cooked by majka (mother) and served by other family members keen to chat. Our days are filled with wonders like Korcula, its pretty little bays and beaches beckoning us to swim, olive groves for miles, charming villages to explore and the wonderful old town winning me over in an instant.
PLITVICE LAKES
Who can fail to love Dubrovnik? Picture postcard baroque buildings and ancient city walls with pedestrianised limestone streets buzzing with activity. I stumble across the impressive 14th-century Franciscan monastery with its truly beautiful cloisters and remarkable pharmacy, 700 years old and still in operation today. Bowls, laboratory tools and books are on display in the museum and you can purchase moisturisers made from original Franciscan recipes using local herbs. When my feet demand I stop walking for a while, I find a small bar up a tiny side street and sit in the shade with a cool drink served by a hot waiter as I indulge in a bit of people watching. Heaven. Thirteenth-century city walls encasing gothic palaces and marbled streets make Hvar an instant favourite. The island also offers vineyards, olive groves and fragrant fields of lavender. I feel welcome and content as I wander around before finding a quiet spot for a glass of wine as the sun starts to set. Stepping ashore in Split before we disembark for good, I wander, slack jawed, through Diocletian’s palace, the rather impressive, pulsing heart of the city with narrow streets bursting with bars and cafes, children playing oblivious to the history surrounding them at every turn while rows of washing hang from balconies above me. This is like no other palace I have ever seen. I was wrong. Cruise anyone? — Words: Kate Gohar, Director, World Journeys

I had told too many people I could never be a particularly enthusiastic cruise passenger; there seemed to be something rather too jolly about it for my taste. However, boarding a small but perfectly formed, deluxe cruiser to meander along the Croatian coast risked turning me into a big, fat liar.

It’s fascinating meeting the people and learning about the traditions and the cooking techniques. The more places we visit, the more we add to our toolkit to bring home.” Karena adds that the second series, “the best job ever”, was certainly easier to film, having been “more focussed and refining our style”. I ask about the challenges of making the transition from TV contestants to presenters. “The thing is, we just get to be ourselves,” says Kasey. “There were no instructions about how we should act, we were just let loose! Being in different environments and cooking with unfamiliar ingredients to interpret food that we’ve tried over such a short amount of time creates a different kind of pressure — but being on MasterChef helped us deal with cooking under pressure.” “We also travel with a small crew of only four — two camera people, the director, and the sound guy,” says Karina, “so we feel very comfortable with them. You actually kind of forget that you’re filming a TV show while you’re there.” You must all develop a real bond? “We do,” says Kasey. “It’s funny because whenever we meet up at the airport after we haven’t seen each other for while there are lots of hugs and excitement. It’s like a family.” The sisters clearly have an incredible connection, but being on the road for great lengths can strain even the strongest of relationships. Kasey reveals that they have an almost “intuitive understanding”. “But there are still rules,” interjects her sister. “Like if we’re on an aeroplane and Kasey’s wearing her eye mask it means that I’m not allowed to talk to her!” The sisters still live just a couple of hundred metres apart in their hometown of Maketu in the Bay of Plenty where the family gathers together regularly to feast. Though they’d barely cooked as a team before, Karina and Kasey would often discuss their favourite eateries, recipes and cooking shows. Entering MasterChef, they say, just felt like a natural progression. Brimming with ideas and
inspiration from their global gastronomical tours their next big goal is to open a restaurant of their own. While in Peru, the sisters discovered that some communities cook potatoes in an earth and stone oven similar to the hangi — only they also add manure to the mix. The potato was first domesticated in Peru, and remains a much-revered part of their culture. We see Karina and Kasey visit the Potato Museum and discover a stark effect of climate change. “Potatoes that used to be grown at 3,000 feet now need to be grown 500 feet further up,” says Karina. “They’re having to go higher because the potatoes aren’t growing as well as they used to.” The sisters say that one of the biggest — and best — surprises was their visit to Ireland. Having only previously experienced traditional Irish pub grub like bangers and mash, they were shocked to find a thriving and innovative food scene producing artisan breads, cheeses, beers and gin. “We drank Guinness every day,” chuckles Karina. “But the problem with that is that once you’ve tasted Guinness in Ireland, it ruins it everywhere else.” “I was also blown away by Sri Lanka,” says Kasey. “Especially learning about the history of the tea.” Are you always well received as Kiwis? “Definitely,” says Karina. “We got to watch the last Lions games at an Irish bar in this tiny town — like Maketu where we’re from — and it was eight in the morning and the locals were drinking Guinness and they’d cheer when us Kiwis walked in. Everywhere you go there seems to be an appreciation for New Zealand, which makes you feel proud. But, once we got an Uber in the US, and the driver asked where we from and we told him New Zealand and he replied that he’d had lots of customers from Europe recently!” Kasey says that they also feel great responsibility as Maori ambassadors when abroad. “I feel like that even travelling without the cameras,” adds Karina. “Being Maori you are representing your family when you travel overseas so it’s always in the back of your mind to be respectful and appreciate other people and their country as you soak it all in.” — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces KARENA AND KASEY'S KITCHEN DIPLOMACY PREMIERES THURSDAY, 8 FEBRUARY AT 7.30PM ON TVNZ1, ALSO AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON TVNZ ONDEMAND.

This month marks the start of the second series of Kitchen Diplomacy, the jet-setting food show hosted by MasterChef 2014 champions, Karena and Kasey Bird. The sisters take up where they left off in 2016, exploring cultures of the four corners, but instead of being hosted by local ambassadors, they visit local homes and eateries taking in tips and techniques before ending the week by preparing an interpretive meal inspired by their cultural learnings.

We are lucky enough to have friends and family scattered around the world who we can stay with. Our stopover in Abu Dhabi after working in the South of France was a definite highlight for us in 2015. Our Aunty Kellie, Uncle Marty and cousins Hauata and Manawa had activities planned for us for the whole time we were there. We went on a desert safari, sand-boarded down huge sand dunes, watched (and tried) belly dancing and smoked shisha under the stars. We visited the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and had amazing dinners at some very opulent hotels.

SMOKED KAHAWAI SPREAD Walking around a farmers' market and being able to talk face-to-face with the growers and producers is inspiring, their passion for what they do is infectious and you can taste it in what they are selling. These toppings were created using fresh, seasonal, local ingredients from the Tauranga Farmers' Market for a cooking demonstration we did for the Tauranga Garden and Arts Festival. There is a sense of familiarity for us when we are able to do events closer to home and it was one of the most relaxed and enjoyable demos we have been to. When thinking of ways to use the ingredients we had collected from the market, the only way we could do justice to such wonderfully nurtured ingredients was to treat them simply and serve them on freshly baked baguette.

A CLEAN SLATE WITH CLEAN MEAT Last year it was revealed that, per capita, New Zealand was the seventh-worst emitter of greenhouse gases among 41 industrialised nations. While you may not be surprised to hear 40.5% of the pollution was the result of energy industries, it may come as a shock to learn 47.9% was caused by agriculture — a trend that’s typical worldwide. According to a recent report in the Guardian, in 2016, meat and dairy giants Tyson, Cargill and JBS, created more greenhouse gases than France, lagging not far behind oil corporations such as Shell, Exon or BP. In fact, if the 20 most powerful meat and dairy companies were a country, they’d be the seventh biggest polluter on Earth. Cows alone cause more greenhouse gases than all the world’s cars, and what’s more, they emit methane which is far more toxic to the atmosphere — that’s before we even get to the issues of soiled waters and excess land use. Kiwi future of food and agriculture specialist Dr Rosie Bosworth is taking a stand. “Agriculture produces 18% of global greenhouse emissions which is more than all transportation combined,” she says. “Plus, 80% of industrial water-use is attributed to agriculture, and there’s the environmental degradation that comes with it. We must change the system. There’s a growing generation of people who are aware of this, who are aware of not only the environmental impact of animal farming, but the ethical and health impacts too. There is an army of socially-minded consumers demanding animal-free products.”
Rosie, who has a PhD in environmental innovation and sustainable technology development, has created a global network of likeminded leaders in the area of food futurism. She advises businesses, industry and government on “various strategic pathways forward in the future of food and agriculture”, and writes and speaks on the subject — including for TEDx — regularly. “My passion in health and wellbeing was ingrained from a young age,” she says. “I was an active child and my mother always cooked healthy dinners. But it was accelerated when I broke my neck, back, and leg in a skiing accident overseas.” During her recovery, unable to move for many months, Rosie’s revaluation of life led her to slow down, to develop an interest in yoga (which she now teaches), meditation and a mindful way of living. It also deepened her existing passion for food and the role technology can play in creating sustainable yet highly progressive and productive industries. Rosie completed part of her PhD at the University of Maastricht — where the world’s first synthetic hamburger was grown, by Dr Mark Post — becoming involved in technologies that “were disruptive to industries, and creating paradigm shifts including renewable energy systems, ownership-free transportation, and the transition of animal-bred food and protein systems to plant-based- and synthetic proteins that could feed the world”. “When I finished my PhD, there wasn’t much going on in the food space,” says Rosie. “So, I kept falling into other roles around clean energy and sustainability, but over time, I kept focusing on food, on how technologies were changing the face of agriculture.
Eventually it just started to blow up.” But there are still great generational and cultural divides in attitudes to alternate proteins. “NonWestern cultures, like Asia, have generally been more progressive when it comes to a plant-based diet,” Rosie says. “Up until the last few decades, they haven’t eaten so much meat — and we are already starting to see the health impacts of that. There are also generational differences when you compare millennials and generation X to baby boomers who can barely wrap their heads around eating something that isn’t produced from an animal, coupled with the attitude of ‘why should they?’ They often fall back on that old chestnut that there will always be a market for animal-derived foods.” Research by Oxford University’s Oxford Martin School concludes that the adoption of a vegetarian diet would cut global emissions by 63% (70% for veganism) by 2050, prevent seven million premature deaths (eight million for veganism), and save US$1 billion a year in healthcare costs. Myths around the impossibility of ingesting enough protein through a plant-based diet are thankfully fast dispelling, but the notion of consuming synthetic or lab-grown meats are a tougher swallow. I ask Rosie if the language needs to change. “Of course. I would never want to eat anything synthetic, it seems fake and unhealthy. There certainly needs to be such a shift away from such terms if the industry is to truly take off.” While plantbased proteins are self-explanatory, Rosie fears there is too much confusion and misinformation about how synthetic — or ‘clean’ — meats are grown:
“When you look at how most of the world produces traditional meat, animals are often fed corn, grain and supplements, that are not natural for them to eat. They are kept in confined conditions and given hormones and antibiotics. New Zealand's pastorally raised system is better, but still flawed. Clean meats are grown using the same animal cells, but instead of using the animal as a vehicle to grow those proteins we use another medium such as a fermentation tank. The result is a nutritious product with significantly less environmental impact, and one that is far more ethical.” While plant-based products are presently available in ever-increasing numbers, food technology companies such as San Francisco-based Memphis Meats and Finless Foods are aiming to make their clean meats available within the next five years. Prominent naturalists such as Sir David Attenborough argue that some form of population control such as China’s one child policy should be implemented to tackle dwindling global resources and environmental degradation. Rosie is reluctant to weigh in on that debate, but does admit that it is “the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about”: “Though there are certainly ways that technology and innovation can possibly provide solutions and wise answers to this issue, without necessarily reducing population.” Much public perception is that animal farming is sustainable and eco-friendly. Do you fear the industry wields too much power? “Until recently, yes. The pro-meat industry promotes itself as a 'natural' product. But when you look at what
>>
“
Why would I eat something that has been raised when there are so many other more feasible options?
“
is involved in industrialised animal agriculture such as factory- and battery farming there are processes in the way these animals are raised and slaughtered that is far from 'natural'. Even on free-range (pastoral) farms in New Zealand, I have heard, anecdotally from those in the industry, that the animals are not always completely pastorally raised with diets far from 100% grass-fed. People are eating meats in spite of, not because of, how it is produced.” Where do you see New Zealand’s role in all of this? “I definitely think livestock numbers will drop over time because as the cost of alternative protein products lessen, animal farmers won’t be able to compete. Also, more and more consumers will begin to wisen up and realise, ‘Why would I eat something that has been raised in these conditions when there are so many other more feasible options?’ As a nation, we must think about the opportunities that plantbased proteins bring, research and development gaps to seize within the clean meat sector, and how we can create our own progressive research and development around high value horticulture, how we can develop high value nutraceuticals and bioactives from our native plants and crops that can yield good income-earning capacity for the country.” Once ‘alternative’ lifestyle choices such as veganism or practising yoga and meditation are now becoming almost mainstream, and that, Rosie adds, should fill us with hope. “There is a wider realisation that we have reached a tipping point in the industrialised world,” she says. We are reassessing what makes us happy or complete — and it has nothing to do with being busy or accumulating material goods: “We are increasingly looking for those places of solace, where we can feel centred, and ethical and animal-free products are an offshoot of that. We are moving toward a progressive food system that can feed the population in a respectful way. It’s a lofty goal, but one that need to happen if we are to ensure that the world is a happy and healthy place for the generations to come.”

LET’S EAT OUT
FRY BABY
//
If you view simplicity as the ultimate sophistication you’ll love Auckland’s latest addition with a re-assuring sense of what works. The concept is uniquely different in that all it sells is fries and only fries. As a consequence in a city dominated by hundreds of takeaway eateries Fry Baby takes a different tack, subsequently it’s no wonder why it’s so popular and such a huge hit in Auckland’s crowded food scene. Fries are one of the world’s most popular comfort foods and while the concept of a fries-only operation is new to New Zealand, the concept has been around in Belgium for decades and more recently throughout Europe.
Beyond compare in texture, taste and shape (the fries are all hand cut) you can also douse the fries with one of ten amazing sauces. First encounter is the amazing crunchiness of the agria potatoes that have been twice deep fried in coconut oil. You can graze with small ($6), medium ($8) or large ($11) helpings served up in grease-proof paper sleeves. And the verdict? This is the exactly the sort of eatery that everyone would like to have in their street and exactly the type of food that suits Auckland’s casual lifestyle. It’s also proof that good takeaway food never goes out of style, nor does their eager-to-please service. — Words: Dennis and Rosamund Knill CORNER OF CUSTOMS AND COMMERCE ST, AUCKLAND OPEN DAILY, 11AM TO 8PM

THE QUICK GUIDE TO GROWING EDIBLE
@BOHEMIATEACO
TEA TO LIVE FOR
VIOLA
Decorate your garden and brighten up many a drab salad. Edible flowers are beloved by bees and are great way to add a tasty dash of colour to your meals. In recent years edible flowers have been all the rage, but to ensure you pick the right flowers from the right place here are a few tips on what to do. • Make sure that you either grow from seed, buy organically or from an edible plant section in a garden centre. If you choose flowers that have been grown for ornamental purposes there is no guarantee that they haven’t been sprayed with something that's unsuitable for human consumption. • Be sure that the flowers you are consuming are edible. If you’re not sure don’t risk it as some flowers are poisonous.
OUR TOP PICKS
BORAGE Easy to grow, borage self-seeds readily and has broad slightly hairy leaves and gorgeous blue star-shaped flowers that can be candied and used to stunning effect on cakes and muffins. The leaves taste like cucumber and when crushed taste great when added to gin and tonic. VIOLA/HEARTSEASE These gorgeous flowers are closely related to pansies, with a similar though smaller flower. The flowers have a strong peppery flavour and are available in a stunning array of bright and vibrant colours. For best results through summer, plant in a semi-shaded spot, protected from the mid-afternoon sun and keep well-watered. Other great plants to grow for the edible flowers includes calendula, pineapple sage, anise hyssop, geraniums, nasturtiums, shungiku (a type of chrysanthemum), bee balm, chamomile, lemon verbena and zucchini, squash and pumpkin blossoms. "Tea is all about pleasure," says Rebecca Le Harle, the certified tea master behind boutique start-up Bohemia Tea Co, whose Sipper Club tea tasting subscription launched this month. In the process of researching and acquiring tea for her business, she discovered many new, exotic and rare teas. These fascinating brews elevated her relationship with tea beyond the ordinary. Through The Sipper Club she wants to share that experience with others. Each month an exciting, rare tea is sent out with tasting notes to enhance the tea experience. Monthly live tasting videos allow subscribers to join this tea master and guests on a guided tea tasting. “A good cup of tea can have just one of many contributing factors: quality tea (of course); clean water; great company; and a beautiful view. But great tea requires all of those factors to combine. With The Sipper Club we’re encouraging people to add a bit of celebration and ceremony to their tea drinking.” There is a strong tradition of tea drinking in Rebecca’s family: “Four generations of ladies sat together drinking English breakfast recently, including my seven-year-old daughter. My grandfather went to Japan at the end of World War Two and came back with a love of drinking tea buds, which he would secretly add to the teapot swimming with tea bags. Tea runs in my blood”. While working in a tea house years ago, the love of tea was solidified and a course was set. Since studying with the ITMA and completing a tea master qualification, Rebecca has been dedicated to serving and sharing the best of the tea world.

SPORTING VEGANISM UK Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton (pictures) raised eyebrows recently with the announcement that he has adopted veganism (now saving animals in a similar vein to the way he saves a sickening amount of tax), joining a halfmillion-strong club of fellow vegan Brits — a number that’s tripled in the past decade. Performance biochemist Dr Rob Child, who has worked with Tour de France cyclists and Olympic athletes, told the BBC “it’s a bad idea to switch mid-season”, but weeks later, Hamilton secured his fourth F1 crown. Child goes on to say that vegan diets risk reducing free testosterone levels which can slow recovery and compromise a sportsperson’s “edge”, as well as affecting iron levels, but Vegan Society nutritionist Heather Russell disputes this. “Studies have shows that vegan nutrition can support normal testosterone levels,” she says. “… Research suggests that vegan diets tend to be lower in saturated fat than other dietary patterns, which helps to explain why they have been linked to lower cholesterol, and lower rates of heart disease.” An ever-growing list of world-class athletes seem to agree and are hopping aboard this animal-free ark. Superstar tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams have been vegan since 2012 (winning the Olympics doubles title together a few months later), while their male counterpart Novak Djokovic adheres to a mainly vegan diet — and even opened vegan eatery, Eqvita, in Monte Carlo in 2016. Ultramarathoner Scott Jurek, who in 2015 broke the record for the 3,500-km Appalachian Trail, puts his decades-long success down to veganism, and those who think his somewhat svelte figure represents the typical vegan build should look to British boxer David ‘the Haymaker’ Haye, who claimed his conversion to veganism made him “stronger than ever”. American Footballer David Carter, who is a defensive lineman described as “300 pounds of veganism”, tells the Chicago Sun Times of his vegan enlightenment: “I was shocked. When I first started, I was, ‘What the hell? I have more energy. I’m a lot stronger that I was before.’”
Top English footballer Jermain Defoe is adamant a switch to veganism has enabled him to play at the highest level well into his 30s, while Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs patrolled Premier League pitches until he was 40 — though not a fullyfledged vegan, he put his longevity down to a vegetarian diet and regular sessions of yoga. (Similarly, Lionel Messi, who’s godlike talent certainly needs no introduction, rarely eats meat during the playing season.) Last year, lowly British club Forest Club won promotion into the national football league for the first time in their 128-year history, and, guess what? They were fed a vegan diet. Meat avoidance in sport has been prevalent — and a precursor to success — for longer than you may think. Olympic silver medalwinning tennis player Eustace Miles, of Hampstead, was one of the earliest proponents of a vegetarian diet, publishing Health Without Meat in 1915, that went on to be a bestseller for years. Paavo Nurmi dominated middle- and long-distance tracks the world over in the mid-1900s, securing nine Olympic gold medals, while never eating meat; and Australian swimmer Murray Rose was just 17 when he bagged three Olympic golds in 1956 having adopted a vegan diet that was, rather fittingly, heavy on the seaweed. Carl Lewis, once the fastest man on the planet, was a vegan, as was the planet’s former toughest man, Mike Tyson — though only after he quit boxing. “Previous research shows that vegans may end up consuming less protein and fat than non-vegans, and my struggle to get enough vitamin B12,” writes David Rogerson, senior lecturer in sports nutrition, and strength and conditioning at Sheffield Hallam University, for The Conversation. “… But getting enough protein on a vegan diet is less of a concern that you’d think, especially if enough calories are consumed… Pulses — such as beans, lentils, peas — and grains — like rice, oats, wheat — are all protein rich, with complementary amino acid profiles.” He concludes that being a vegan and an athlete “can go hand in hand”, but tempers it with the warning that “it does take careful planning”. — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

The same Kiwi ingenuity and humbling local spirit is clear from the jump on the albums intro track "What happens in Mangawhai stays in Mangawhai", dialogue, where the pair resume their tireless countrywide shenanigans where the mischief last left off on their 2015 debut EP Easter Eggs and Good Sportsmanship. No matter where their antics take them though, it always comes back to the gritty heart of core, central Auckland and it's very own little universe. Always with the suavest of flows, Dirty articulates his blue-eyed Maori rapper experience over eight tracks complimented by producer Eno's silky jazz/hip hop fusion. Joined for features by fellow Young Gifted and Broke members Tom Scott on 'Nobody Knows' and Lui Tuiasau on 'Circles', the record is an accurate observation of all the ins and outs of todays Auckland. From the rising gentrification of their hometown, to the normalised drug abuse they grew up around all the way forward to the pride they take in their distinctive swagger and their showcase of masculine self-love on luscious lead single 'Shampoo & Conditioner'. 27 YEARS OF DREAMS Twenty-three-year old Fraser Grut dreams of a world where dreams can and do come true. To make this happen he is challenging a new person each day to realise and vocalise their own unique dream. In fact, 10,000 Days (or 27 years) of Dreams began as a one-year project but that didn’t seem challenging enough for the ambitious young man who soon decided the next logical step was to bump it up another 26 years. However, it was not all smooth sailing for him, saying that the first months of filming were the toughest, but his wife helped him through when one night he almost gave up. “Basically, it was the day my nanna passed away. Day 87. It was late at night and I hadn’t captured a dream that day. I gave up. I didn’t have a strong engagement, so I thought no-one would care. Everyone would forget about the project. Luckily, my wife Belinda encouraged me to push on. She told me not to waste the last three months. Around 10pm we drove to the highway on our way home from Whangarei to Auckland, stopped off at LJS, the fastfood joint, and I filmed the dream of a young guy working at the till — on my iPhone. Before that day, the project had become a burden. It was a chore. I wasn’t challenging myself. After that night, I’ve come to love the project. I’ve seen the positive effect it’s had on people. It’s such a privilege to share the world’s dreams!” Since that day he started interviewing people from all walks of life, driving out to locations he had never been before and approaching strangers.
You can definitely notice a change after this date, the people he begins to interview become more varied and the responses perhaps more spontaneous. He visits mosques, children’s hospitals, the church of Scientology and by now has no problem openly approaching people on the street. Although he does get turned away at times. I asked Fraser why he thinks this happens and he says that “perhaps people are not ready to realise their dreams as they may not know if they can reach them”. This is exactly the kind of attitude he is trying to change. On day 365 Fraser turned the camera on himself, sharing his dream with the world, “Ever since I was seven-yearsold I’ve had three dreams: to change the world through film; to tell the whole world about God through film; and to become the greatest filmmaker to have ever lived. My dream for Frog is that it becomes the biggest film studio in the world but that it’s gates are always open to young filmmakers. My dream for 10,000 Dreams is that for the next 26-and-a-half years the world starts to realise that no matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, everyone has the right to have a dream and has the right to actually live their dream. I want to build it into a charity that basically helps people live their dreams and makes dreams come true. So that's my dream. Thank you.” With 26 years to go, Fraser wants to take this project around the world and share as many dreams as possible. This project is a lifestyle and everybody’s dream is relevant to Fraser Grut. — Words: Mya Cole

AQUARIUS 20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY Your sense of adventure runs high this month, and you are itching for a change of pace. You are more effective, in general, in attempts to express your creativity. You have a stronger ability to hold the attention of an audience. This month you will have to run around for earning money and fulfilling needs of family. Expenses are likely to rise and you have to become economical.

It’s time to formulate some clear goals and plans. Circumstances are such that you need to develop some healthy habits, routines, and schedules. Recognising your personal limitations in terms of just how much you can give to others and just how much compassion and understanding you can show is essential now. The movement towards last week is towards a more balanced approach to dealing with practical, worldly matters and your own spiritual growth.
You will benefit from a special talent, enthusiasm or passion which you could turn into income, or extra prestige. Work is a scurry of activity and this period also favours stepping up physical activity or health routines. The end result is a newfound identity and a realistic understanding of your capabilities as well. If you are prepared to work hard at love, then you should also pass all the relationship exams ahead.
This period acts to transform your self-confidence in such a way that you question the source of your confidence to date, and discover a more solid base for pulling up inner strength. In terms of career and projects, outward signs of progress may not be as forthcoming, yet the work that you do during this transit will lay a foundation for future success and progress.

You are bound to experience your fair share of fun, romance, and good times. Creative projects are likely to fare well, and could possibly even bring some type of recognition or reward. Cleaning out closets, reorganising the environment in which you live and work, and other such activities come to the fore. You will win hearts of all your loved ones by showing them love and affection.
You are markedly introspective at this time, perhaps isolating yourself from worldly activities and acquaintances in some manner. Health issues, generally of a psychosomatic nature, may come to the fore. You may be attracted to alternate ways of living, and to self-study fields, such as psychoanalysis. Socialising on the job, and perhaps even meeting someone through work, is also part of the picture in the second half of the month.
This month will reshape your financial destiny so analyse the facts and figures, when other people's stake in your affairs will be crucial. You may need to be a total realist about your career and take control of your financial world. This will work well, with further gains. You may also concentrate on your love life. You could take up some form of physical program that completely changes the way you feel about yourself.

You are far less inhibited when it comes to expressing yourself creatively, and you are a lot more fun to be around. You may find great joy and reward in your creative projects and hobbies, and could discover a new hobby or creative talent you never knew you had. Pleasure-seeking activities, recreation, and amusement are increased. This is a fabulous period in which to take a vacation you’ve always wanted to take.
You are far less inhibited when it comes to expressing yourself creatively, and you are a lot more fun to be around. The movement is towards a more balanced approach to dealing with practical, worldly matters. With spouse or love, a great time is indicated as you will get to express your deep feelings, which will bring closeness and intensity in your life. On the career front you will get all the success.

Your creativity and social life are stimulated this month, and plenty of opportunities to express yourself uniquely and creatively will present themselves. You are able to find a healthy balance between work and play. For some of you, working with a romantic partner could figure. Although you could feel some pressure, you are always willing to work all the harder to meet your new responsibilities.
Your efforts now are very constructive, and you are not inclined to want to leave any loose ends untied. You are likely to derive much satisfaction from taking care of practical concerns in your life. This is a time of long-range planning that will bring you benefits down the road. Healthy risks are likely to pay off, but be careful of overconfidence in speculative investments.
You enjoy an increased ability to concentrate and focus on what really matters to you. The things that give you joy and positive feedback figure prominently this month, and you feel renewed and regenerated. You also feel particularly strong and personally powerful. Those with artistic or athletic talent can be especially prolific and prosperous at this time. This is a good period to go for recreation activities to recharge yourselves.

Broken is a modern retelling of the true NZ story of Tarore and her Book made popular by beloved author Joy Cowley. Logan, an ex-gang leader has left the gang life to raise his daughter Tori. When Tori is murdered by an opposing gang in town, a gang war is inevitable and Logan must choose between revenge or forgiveness as things escalate quickly.
The dinner-party-from-hell genre is delivered a short sharp shock by veteran British writer-director Sally Potter in this gleaming black comedy. Kristin Scott Thomas is hosting a group of friends to celebrate her promotion as shadow minister of health, elegantly juggling dinner preparation, congratulatory calls and surreptitious messaging from a lover. Husband Timothy Spall plays aggressive DJ, otherwise upright but catatonic in the living room as the guests arrive. These include her best friend (Patricia Clarkson, wryly acidic), her life-coach boyfriend (Bruno Ganz, wondrously inane), a coked-up venture capitalist (Cillian Murphy) who arrives sans wife, and an earnest lesbian couple (Emily Mortimer and Cherry Jones) intent on sharing some good news. Silly them.

LOVING VINCENT Loving Vincent, the world’s first fully painted feature film, brings the paintings of Vincent van Gogh to life to tell his remarkable story. Every frame of the film, totalling around 65,000, is an oil-painting hand-painted by 125 professional oil-painters who travelled from around the world. As remarkable as Vincent’s brilliant paintings is his passionate and ill-fated life, and mysterious death. Loving Vincent stars famous faces to match the famous paintings they portray, including — Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones) plays Doctor Gachet, Saoirse Ronan (Academy Award nominee for Brooklyn & Atonement) plays his daughter Marguerite Gachet; and Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, The IT Crowd) is postman Joseph Roulin. What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, with Turner being the person Gloria turns to for comfort. Their passion and lust for life is tested to the limits by events beyond their control.
A LIFE SKILL JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WALKING AND TALKING
We all expect our children to grow up to talk and walk well. We should also expect them to swim well. Swimming is one of life’s most important skills. Water Safety New Zealand says that seven out of 10 Kiwi kids can’t swim to save themselves. It’s a scary statistic when you consider that being in the water is part of New Zealand’s culture. Learning to swim doesn’t happen by accident. Andrew Brown, general manager of Hilton Brown Swimming explains: “Swimming is what’s known as a ‘gross motor skill’. It’s a whole-body action that takes time to learn, just like walking and talking.” Hilton Brown Swimming’s benchmark for competent swimming is being able to swim 200 metres using correct stroke and breathing techniques. “We offer new customers a free trial lesson, so that we can see what’s needed in the way of teaching,” says Andrew. “Our lessons are structured so that children are taught at the right level — not too easy, not too hard. We promote them to the next level as soon as they’re ready, so they can make progress at their own pace.” Apart from the obvious life-saving benefits, being a good swimmer is great for self-esteem. How will your children do at this year’s swimming sports? If you want to give their skills and confidence a boost, now’s the time for a free trial at Hilton Brown Swimming. HILTONBROWNSWIMMING.CO.NZ

SNAP A SELFIE WITH YOUR DOG WITH THE NEW SELFIESTIX APP PEDIGREE® are making it easier for you to snap a selfie with your dog. Following the success of PEDIGREE® SelfieSTIX — a specially designed clip that lets you attach a PEDIGREE® DentaStix™ to the top of your smartphone — PEDIGREE® and Colenso BBDO launched the PEDIGREE® SelfieSTIX app that lets people add fun filters to their dog’s perfect photo. Like Snapchat lenses, but for dogs, the PEDIGREE® SelfieSTIX app easily converts peoples’ canine companions into a delightful cast of characters, including police officers, aviators, university graduates, safari explorers and cowboys. Dog owners can also expect a new release of filters around special occasions like Valentine’s Day and Easter. Says David Arcus, creative technologist for Colenso BBDO: “People have access to filters, so why not dogs? We looked everywhere for the tech, but it doesn’t exist so, we built it. We trained a network to recognise dog faces by feeding it thousands of images of dogs. Over time, the trained algorithm learned to recognise similar patterns across all the
images, the edges of the ears, or the contrasting colours of the nose, for instance. Then whenever the dog looks at the camera, the app places a fun filter on its face.” Says Cormac van den Hoofdakker, brand manager of PEDIGREE® at Mars NZ: “We love our dogs, so why not give dogs access to all the fun things us humans have too? The PEDIGREE® SelfieSTIX phone clip meant that people could have meaningful moments of closeness with their dogs in the form of a perfect selfie. But with the PEDIGREE® SelfieSTIX app, it truly takes those selfies to the next level.” The PEDIGREE® SelfieSTIX app transforms the campaign and activation into a platform that can be refreshed time and time again, driving repeat purchase of the DentaStix™ product. The app uses a unique combination of canine facial recognition technology and machine learning to track the dog’s face, which allows for accurate placing of the filters. It then lets people share their filtered selfie through social media.
COMPATIBLE WITH ANDROID AND IOS DEVICES, THE PEDIGREE® SELFIESTIX APP IS FREE TO DOWNLOAD FROM THE APP STORE AND GOOGLE PLAY.

BETTER PUBLIC SERVICE
Summer 2018 has arrived with the fresh fruit ice creams, visits to the beach, and lots of sun tan lotion.
Being in government is about making decisions that will help create progress and success for New Zealanders now and into the future.
But all is not sunny as we look ahead to the new year.
It’s important for taxpayers to know that the decisions we make with their money deliver real results for New Zealanders.
Changes ahead will make for uncertain times for the rental industry, property managers, investors, and landlords. Proposed changes that the new Labour government will make will certainly upset the industry, including my business JUST RENTALS, the landlords and properties we look after. One proposed change is the letting fee, this is important to our business to cover costs occurred in the letting process. Usually the tenant pays it, and there are no problems with regards to this — it is all part of renting a property. But, oh no! Labour does not want the tenant to pay the letting fee of one week plus GST. So who pays for this? This really is a game changer and I can foresee all sorts of complications with the introduction of this legislation. Rents will increase! They also wish to abolish the 90-day letter of notice that the landlord can deliver to tenants and give no reason as to why they have been requested to leave. This is hardly used in my profession. But it is there if required. The six-week notice to tenants to vacate property after it has been sold is, and always has been, the timeframe to allow tenants to move out and find something else to rent. But this will be extended under the new government to 90 days. All this legislation has worked well over the years, why change it now? And there is the Healthy Homes Bill which is required as there are a lot of substandard property out there for rent and some unscrupulous landlords. All these regulations are going to increase the cost to the landlords and rents will rise, or investors will sell their properties, so we have a shortage of good rentals! Not a good start to the new year, but whatever the regulations are, or will be, there will always be a need for Rental Homes and tenants looking to find them. Just Rentals has been in the business of property management and casual renting for 19 years, and this is the first year we have looked forward to the new year with uncertainty. It will affect the way we run our business. But Business as usual at Just Rentals. We have our new photos, it is about time we had some recent shots taken of the A Team — we are all a lot older and we have lost some of our wonderful staff. So it is a much smaller group, but with the new technology we are able to work smarter.
That’s why, when we were in government, National introduced the Better Public Service (BPS) targets. These were about making sure that as a government we could be transparently accountable for the decisions we made about spending – and the impact we made on New Zealanders’ lives. The targets provided public servants with a clear focus on what they needed to do to improve lives and allowed us to see exactly what kind of difference the money we invested was making for real people. The impact that the targets have had on our public service and on the lives of individual New Zealanders has been immense. They have helped lead to measurable gains in everything from 60,000 fewer children in benefit-dependent households, a 31% reduction in youth crime, and halving the proportion of 18-yearolds not achieving NCEA Level 2. But despite all this, the new government wants to get rid of them. That is a recipe for dumb, lazy government. It will mean less focus for public servants and less accountability for the government. Taxpayers will no longer know whether their money is making a difference for New Zealanders. It seems that all we can expect from this government over the next few years is a fog of commissions, inquiries, reviews and working groups — in other words, a lot of bureaucratic bluster and not much change in the lives of those who desperately need it. It’s hard to fathom why the government wouldn’t want to have a clear target to reduce the number of children admitted to hospital with avoidable disease. Or to have a measurable aim of enrolling 90% of women with a lead maternity carer by the end of their first trimester. We know that Labour has always disliked the public accountability that goes with this strong focus on getting results and now they are leaping on the opportunity to scrap that accountability. Instead, we are likely to see them shift to higher-level longerterm targets that don’t apply to anyone in particular and for which no in particular can be held accountable.
We welcome the new year with all its challenges and changes. Business as usual! Good Renting Sylvia Lund AREINZ, Director 40 ST JOHNS RD, MEADOWBANK JUSTRENTALS.CO.NZ — 09 528 4817 OR 09 528 4818

One Agency Luxury Property, the new revolution in real estate, has just opened at 272 Parnell Rd, Parnell. A member of one of the fastest growing real estate brands in Australasia. I will keep you informed about what to look out for with new tech and how to keep your computer safe from the new ways that criminals are trying to use it against you. The biggest news is a hardware vulnerability that has been discovered in all Intel CPU systems. Although there is a security patch, it slows down your computer, but you really need the patch! Catch 22, but hopefully a new patch may improve the speed issue. The positives for this year are a new stream of high performing laptops that have great battery life as well as speed and good pricing. Desktop PCs are slowly creeping up in price as demand dwindles but if you still need serious power I can design and build a system specifically for your needs. Do you have a laptop or PC that is not performing well anymore? Whether it is old or only a few months from new and not giving you what you need, I have a solution for you. Instead of replacing your machine, I can install a Solid State Drive or SSD to replace your existing hard drive. These SSD’s can typically operate at up to 10 times the speed of a SATA mechanical type hard drive. At Rudy’s PC Services we can help you set up the best solution for your needs. Call us about anything regarding your computer and we will be glad to advise you and fulfil your requirements. We are all about making long term relationships with our customers. We give ongoing advice and support. Often for free! Like us on Facebook and share with your friends and family. Phone 579 7809, 0272634778 or email rudy@rudys.co.nz
