EDITORS' Note “IT TAKES STRENGTH TO BE GENTLE AND KIND”
As we were compiling the files for the June issue of Verve we realised that the publication day coincided with Queen’s Birthday. Unwittingly, our thoughts turned to England and the unspeakable tragedy endured by the people of this nation during the past month. We all felt that little could be more fitting than to use this space to reproduce and share Russell Brand’s heartfelt and eloquent piece which he posted on his Facebook page two days after the bombing. “As I read the news of these sad murders in Manchester, posted directly to my home screen I engage in the futile mental gymnastics of trying to understand. Trying to understand the grief of survivors, the gaping bereavement of family members. The fierce and insular insanity of the perpetrator. I am baffled by the scope of our human capacity to feel or not feel. To love or not love. To kill. Futile even to try to understand the confusion of those directly affected, in their sudden, jagged pain. The vertigo of unexpected loss. Their journey is just beginning, a thousand unfolding horrors await. Tickets to a gig, a pleasing memento converted to a marker of this pointless pain. A lifetime to wonder what might've been or not been. Terror is so called perhaps in part because it cannot ever be stopped. We know this don't we? We know we can't stop people turning cars, planes and public spaces into accessories to murder. There can never be enough metal detectors or screening procedures, or checks or bans or vengeful responses. There will always
be people in the world that find a flag under which to this express unfathomable cruelty. I cannot understand it. There are too many things I love to abandon my life to hatred, starting with my girlfriend and daughter all the way to places I've been and unthinkingly enjoyed, like Manchester. What depths must be inhabited to inflict such suffering? Thank God I can't imagine it. Neither can I imagine the grief of those adrift in delirious sadness, the choking, coiling misery. Just the sharp pang when I look at that little girl's smiling face. My mind is too limited for these extremes and these extremists driven by goals that I do not understand. I hope I never know the pain. I don't pretend to understand the victims, the bereaved, or the perpetrator. I have a sense that hatred comes from hatred and love comes from love. Perhaps there is a simple duty for those of us not directly affected — to know that we can't hate our way out of this. To be loving and to be strong. At times like this to be loving takes incredible strength. As that peculiar and great son of Manchester, Morrissey said, "It's easy to laugh, it's easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind'." __ FACEBOOK.COM/RUSSELLBRAND

FRESH START & NEW SMILES
VERVE VOICES
GRAFTON DENTAL:
// Jun 2017
Growing up, Dr Vaibhav Talesara, or “Dr V”, admired contemporary architecture, so it’s only fitting that the dentist finally managed to put his creative streak to good use in designing the layout of Grafton Dental—a sophisticated space that owes its appearance as much to a health retreat-cum-contemporary gallery as it does to a clinic. “This is my first private practice, it’s my baby,” he beams. “It was very exciting to watch it all come together after everything has been handpicked. I’ve have been blessed with a tremendously supportive family: all working until the early hours to get it all ready. It’s even more exciting now that we are up and running.” Mid-century modern chairs grace the waiting room, a geometric soon-to-be-trademarked copper logo adorns the marble-finished wall behind reception, and a handful of limited edition Anna Leyland prints, also in copper, grace the hallways. “We wanted to incorporate Kiwiana art, as opposed to the traditional photos of smiling faces,” says V. The clinic, which opened just a couple of months ago, has been entered in the NZ Master Joiners Awards for its custom-designed reception. The fashionable space is flooded with natural light, and equipped with state-of-the-art gear designed and handmade in Europe. Above the dental chair, a flatscreen TV is affixed to the ceiling. Everything has been done to create the most relaxing environment for the patient. “Dentistry has come a long way since I first started practising more than a decade ago,” says V. “One of the most challenging — and rewarding — parts of the job, is helping patients overcome their fear. Patient education
is an intergral part of that. For example, I will show them pictures of their teeth using an intraoral camera, instead of just telling them what's wrong; give advice on oral health; check their dietary history; or encourage them to quit smoking.” Follow-up care, too, is vital. “We call patients the day after procedures and when they tell you they 'feel like a box of fluffy ducks', that makes me happy — as does seeing them smile more after we’ve done some cosmetic work.” The clinic also has a strong focus on technology to enhance the patient experience, providing easy and convenient online booking. V, who hails from Mumbai and has lived in New Zealand since 2009, started practising after futher studies at the University of Otago. He feels blessed to be in a profession that he so adores: “I get excited about coming in to work on Monday mornings.” When V began working with his mentor, Dr Suvarna Nene, a decade ago, he realised he’d found his calling. “She is a world-leading dentist and implant surgeon,” he says. “I learnt an incredible amount from her. She was my inspiration, and her passion rubbed off on me.” It was V’s mother, Jayshri, who encouraged him to go abroad to enhance his career and experience a different culture. He cites his mum and brother, Atul, as his biggest cheearleaders. As for the future, he plans to expand the surgery, to become a specialty practice, focussing on cosmetic dentistry and endodontics. “The clinic’s first and foremost focus will always be quality dentistry. Professional, passionate, affordable. It’s that simple!”

Verve catches up with perfume, beauty and style icon, Linda Rodin. Where are you originally from? I'm from a small town on the northern shore of Long Island, New York. It's name is Roslyn and it's about a 40-minute drive to Manhattan. Tell us about your early childhood, aspirations and dreams. I had a quiet yet lovely childhood. I grew up with an older sister and younger brother. We were an artistic gang. I don't remember having dreams and future aspirations. In those days we really did live in the moment. How did you become noticed? Well, I think it happened when people discovered and loved my skincare products. And the fact that I was almost 60-years-old and starting an accidental new career didn't hurt. Favourite career moments. I worked with Bob Dylan, Muhammad Ali and Cher, along with many many other fantastic people in all aspects of fashion and beauty. People that have inspired you. My mother, father, sister, aunt and grandmother. Sadly all of them have left us. Favourite things about living in New York. The fact that I have been here since I was 17 and know it like the back of my hand. It is familiar and comfortable and my home. The New York I know is quickly and sadly disappearing, however.
Your thoughts and philosophy on fashion. I always believe that if I feel comfortable in my clothing choices, I look good and feel confident. For me it's a simple look. Not lots of drills or attention grabbing things. Do you buy from any particular designer or just buy what you see and love? I buy what I love. Always. I've been wearing denim since I was five and am still collecting vintage 501 Levi's. I also love Ellery, which I discovered while in Australia last summer. I adore everything she does and buy things from photos now, and have the gorgeous pieces shipped to me. How would you describe your own personal style? I would like to think that I'm elegant and classic. And spare. But with a twist. You are an inspiration and also very beautiful — can you give our readers some tips on aging gracefully? Thank you very much. I am not sure if aging can ever be graceful, but I've taken the natural route. I cannot imagine altering my face surgically to chase my youth. I miss looking young — and wrinkle-free. But it can't be avoided in any way that appeals to me. I am just trying to adapt to the reality of getting older with some dignity.
BACTERIA, BLOOD AND BRAZILIANS
IN THE NAME OF BEAUTY:
BOTOX
scientists researched ways of creating something beneficial. It showed potential in the treatment of strabismus (crossed eyes), and in 1978, the US Food and Drug Administration gave approval for clinical trials on humans. Over the following years it was discovered that the toxin treated not just eye conditions, but a number of muscular spasms. A decade later, Allergan purchased the rights to the new wonder drug and renamed it ‘Botox’.
Following the death of several of his countrymen in the early 19th century, German doctor, Justinus Kerner, began studying the guilty contaminated batch of blood sausages, even injecting himself with some of the toxin. Symptoms included drooping eyelids, muscle weakness and difficulty swallowing. His writings paved the way for future prevention, and other unforeseen uses of the bacteria. By the end of the 1890s, seven strains of the botulinum toxin had been identified, four of which posed human risk.
In 1992, ophthalmologist Dr Jean Carruthers realised wrinkle lines were vanishing from the brows of her injected patients. The Botox craze ballooned, and, by the end of the 90s, the country ran out of stock.
Toxins produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium are among some of the most dangerous known to mankind, with the ability to block nerve functions, leading to muscular and respiratory paralysis. It is these bacteria’s spores that produce the potentially fatal, though extremely rare, food poisoning, botulism — and it is from this bacterium that Botox is also produced.
Clostridium botulinum was found to be so potent that during the second world war, the USA considered weaponising it, but the project never materialised and over the following couple of decades instead
Just like those frown lines, the rest is history. Today, other medical companies offer similar treatments produced from the same toxin and marketed under a different brand name (such as Xeomin), though most of the public simply use Botox as a generic name (like 'Hoover' for vacuum). There’s even a term for men who have it done: ‘Brotox’. Botox has received FDA-approval for an array of other conditions such as excessive sweating of the armpits (hyperhidrosis)

BLOOD
A vampire facial, or platelet rich plasma (PRP), is the practice of extracting a couple of vials of blood from a patient’s arms, which are then placed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and the platelets from the red blood cells. The patient’s face is poked with fine needles to aid absorption as the plasma is spread all over it. The platelet-rich plasma is said to be beneficial in that it stimulates the production of new collagen, and thus firms the skin, reducing wrinkles, but there is no conclusive scientific evidence that is has long term benefits — though it’s certainly unlikely to cause any harm. From extracting blood to injecting it, a study published late last year implied that regular injections of blood plasma from young people could possible combat the effects of ageing. Researchers in San Diego injected mice, around 50-years-old in human terms, with blood samples taken from teenagers and discovered it had a rejuvenating effect on their cognitive skills and movement. Earlier research found that stitching old and young mice together so that they shared the same blood supply had a positive effect on the bodies and organs of the older rodents, while the younger ones showed signs of ageing. Other studies have shown that injecting the blood of younger mice into older ones rejuvenates their brains, livers, and hearts. It turns out young human blood possesses similar properties, with benefits to mice’s mental dexterity and ageing — findings that could bode well for both the medical and beauty industries.
Padiha tells the BBC that a Brazilian bikini is all about “freedom for you to have whatever you want”, with decorative hair at the front and all removed from underneath. From humble beginnings, their salon now attracts the rich and famous, turning over US$6 million per year. Last year, a study by JAMA Dermatology found that 84% of women groomed downstairs, with 62% removing all their pubic hair, and younger women being more likely to do so than over-40s. Another study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine has linked the practice with the rise in pornographic consumption. Dr Philippa McCaffery of Clearskincare Clinics surveyed 90 clients from clinics around Sydney for the Cosmetic Physician Society to understand why the “Brazilian has become, in less than a decade, such a broadly requested pubic hair reduction method for women”. Three-quarters of respondents said they did it for aesthetic purposes, 71% for hygienic, and 17% said it was cultural. Regarding sexual pleasure, nearly two-thirds of the women admitted to feeling ‘sexier’ with little or no public hair, while 60% said they experienced more sensation. “After receiving this feedback, Clearskincare Clinics understands why the Brazilian has become such a popular treatment,” says Philippa. “Sixty-one percent of clients said they would recommend Brazilian hair removal as a way of improving their sex lives. If someone said to me there is a treatment that makes my downstairs look great and increases sexual pleasure I would be booking in asap!”
BRAZILIAN
Gwyneth Paltrow, claims her life was changed by Brazilians (the wax, not the people), while Eva Longoria once told Famous magazine, that it makes her sex life better (“I love it, I swear by it”). She insists every woman should try a Brazilian once, and that the sex they have afterwards “will make them keep coming back”. The Brazilian, was not, contrary to popular belief, pioneered in South America, rather by seven sisters during the 1990s in a Manhattan salon. They are all Brazilian, however — and their names all begin with the letter J, so they named the salon J Sisters. Jonice

and palms, as well as the treatment of migraines — all three procedures are approved in New Zealand also. It has shown potential in treating overactive bladders, with one study by Chicago University finding Botox improved bladder function in 70% of participants. Other studies show the drug’s potential in treating depression, premature ejaculation, cleft lip scars, and abnormal heart patterns.

THE URBAN

“I actually started my career as a schoolteacher and first worked in radio handling the cheerleader sponsorship. I quickly fell in love with the industry,” says Jane. “It’s dynamic and vibrant. The people who work in it are second to none. I’ve formed some very deep friendships with both colleagues and clients.” Jane’s home is her sanctuary and offers time out from the hustle and bustle of work life and attending many functions and events as part of her role. Located near Milford Beach, she lives with her 18-yearold daughter Tabitha. You’ll often find the pair sharing mother and daughter time walking the beach. “I love exercising,” she says. “When I don’t exercise I don’t feel good and the stress builds up.” Jane was married to local architect Darren Jessop but separated when Tabitha was four. At the same time, Jane’s father died. “It was a difficult time. I made a bid for Dad’s house, and purchased it from his estate. Those were tough years. The house was old. It needed work. In addition to the hefty mortgage payments I had to increase borrowings for unforeseen repairs, but I believe it’s the hard times that make us stronger.”
Life these days is much easier. Two years ago her friends Tenby Powell and Sharon Hunter set her up on a blind date with close friend Brenden Lyons. “He’s a real ‘bloke’, ex-army and in the trucking business. I met him at a Gallipoli dinner in 2015,” says Jane. “As soon as I met him it felt like we were meant to be together." She adds: “Everything with Brenden is fun and easy. We have a similar sense of humour and outlook on life. Laughter is good for the soul. So is living in the present. Before meeting Brenden I was finally feeling very content and after some challenging years was quite happy to be on my own. He’d split up a while before from a 23-year marriage. Brenden is solid. His loyalty towards his friends from his army and rugby days is evident -- he played top-level rugby for the Brumbies. “I’m very proud of Tabitha too. She is kind, empathetic and extremely clever. She epitomises the glass half full mentality and is in her first year of a design communication degree at AUT, I was a solo mother so it was Team Jane and Tabitha. We’re very close.”

BEAUTY TIPS • I think true beauty comes from your soul. When you’re happy it radiates. Nothing beats a sincere smile that sparkles through the eyes. • I always start with my hair. I’ve always had long hair. It’s actually quite wild so I straighten it a lot as well as regularly getting it coloured and trimmed by Nahid Rahmannejad at Molton Brown in Milford. I trust her completely. • I have started to see Stacey Power of Beautiphi. She has really exciting and technologically advanced skin treatments and is top in her field. Her first priority is ensuring your skin is in great condition. • I regularly change-up my skincare. La Prairie’s great. The Elizabeth Arden Prevage products are amazing. Stacey’s introduced me to the XCell range. I love the vitamin C serum. Elizabeth Arden’s iconic Eight Hour Cream is a must. • Makeup wise I mainly use Bobbi Brown and Elizabeth Arden products. I’ve recently tried Smashbox and love the new Always On Liquid Lips. The 'Stepping Out' colour is fabulous. • I use Australis Blackest Black Multi Mega Mascara. It’s just $19 at Farmers. It has fibres in it so it makes my lashes look longer and thicker. A lot of mascaras leave marks behind on the brow bone but this one doesn’t. • I use Lilash lash growth serum — it works. I regularly get my nails done with Shellac at the local nail bar. • Grooming and presentation are important, although I believe the most attractive asset a woman can have is selfconfidence.

Jane Hitchfield was born in Thames and moved to Auckland as a child. A proud Aucklander, she has enjoyed a stellar career in the fast-paced world of media advertising for more than 20 years. She’s learned to find balance by removing her heels and walking barefoot on the beach.
Jane organised a memorial seat for her father near Milford Reserve (on behalf of her siblings). She walks along the beach to the seat everyday. “It’s become a ritual,” she says. “Every day before or after work I go for a barefoot walk on the beach and sit on that seat. Sometimes I even go and lean on the trees in the reserve and just stop and breathe. The stillness is a great antidote to my job.”

Centrally located in Epsom, Clinic42 offers a wide range of cosmetic medicine and advanced skin treatments.
The team is rapidly expanding and, in addition to the current four cosmetic doctors, there are three experienced cosmetic nurses who are available to perform treatments at very reasonable and competitive prices. All Clinic 42 nurses have direct doctor supervision, meaning you are in very safe hands. All doctors at Clinic 42 are members of the NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine and many of them train other doctors and nurses in cosmetic injectables; their collective experience adding up to a wealth of knowledge. If you are contemplating a botulinum toxin or dermal filler treatment to enhance your looks, why not head in to Clinic 42 for a complimentary consultation with one of their incredible nurses; Natalie, Tracey or Louise. They will discuss with you the best method of treatment to get you the results you desire. While you are there you could ask them about Photo Finish; fast becoming one of their most requested treatments. Their unique Photo Finish treatment combines hyaluronic acid (HA), with botulinum toxin to present a revolutionary way of creating a glowing, hydrated 'just returned from holiday' look.
Hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that is also produced naturally by the body and is found in the greatest concentrations in the skin, joints, and eye sockets where it helps retain collagen, increase moisture and provide elasticity, super-hydrates the skin. Tiny doses of botulinum toxin are included to reduce the action of the superficial layer of the facial muscles, tighten skin pores and minimise acne breakouts. These products are delivered directly into the superficial layers of the skin via a handheld device. The direct effect of this combination smooths the fine lines of the skin surface and improves the sheen of the skin whilst still maintaining facial mobility and expression. This treatment is ideal for patients who experience perimenopausal acne breakouts, crepey skin or reduced hydration resulting in fine lines and textural issues. The face, neck and chest are the most commonly treated areas, along with the backs of the hands, however, any area of the skin maybe treated. The effects will appear in approximately 10 days and last for up to six months. So, if glowing, youthful skin is your goal, head in to see the team at Clinic 42.

WHAT'S NEW AT
22
THE CACI DIFFERENCE We’ve all suffered from some form of skin issue, whether it be acne, dryness, redness, pigmentation or lines and wrinkles. And let’s face it – it can affect our confidence. Looking after your skin health is important, but can be a mindfield of fad products and treatments. We’re breaking it down for you, so you have a better understanding of skin health, and why it’s so important. First off, it’s important to know that your skin is the largest organ of the body and all two-square-metres (on average) of it goes through a cellular renewal process every 28 days. This means that it’s important to take care of it. Both old and new skin cells respond to plenty of TLC and with regular professional treatments, your skin will not only look good, but also be healthier and radiant for years to come. With more than 20 years’ experience in skin treatments, Caci understand how the skin works. Long-lasting skin health takes time and attention. After all, you can’t expect to go to the gym once and gain a six-pack — it’s the same deal when it comes to great skin! That’s why Caci have developed a Skin Health Plan to help you get your best skin. Their Skin Health Plan is tailored for you and your skin goals, with a schedule of skin correcting treatments to help achieve fresh, bright, and healthy looking skin – for only $25 per week. It’s unique to the beauty industry and applicable and beneficial to both men and women. Like most other things, it’s never too early or too late to start taking care of your skin. For younger skin, regular conditioning treatments will slow down the signs of ageing and keep your skin looking fresh for longer. For more advanced signs of skin damage, or particular skin concerns, we can give your complexion a cellular renewal boost and we have a range of skin repair and rebuilding treatments, too.
CACI CLINIC
FIND YOUR CLOSEST
So how exactly does this work? Microdermabrasion is Caci’s stand-out skin conditioning treatment because it helps resurface the skin by polishing away dead skin cells and leaving a smoother, brighter complexion that’s soft and absorbent.
WE ALREADY LOVE MICRODERMABRASION, AND HERE ARE FIVE REASONS YOU WILL LOVE IT TOO: 1. The process allows your skin to feel smoother and softer. After all, no one likes skin that feels like sandpaper! During microdermabrasion, crystals are blown onto the skin’s surface and suctioned away simultaneously – kind of like a vacuum cleaner, one that cleans off the dead skin cells and leaves your skin smooth and soft. 2. You’ll have a brighter complexion, one that makes you happy to see in the mirror first thing in the morning. After treatment your skin is transformed to look and feel newer and fresher. It also gives the 28-day renewal process we talked about earlier a rev up and leaves a glow in its wake. 3. You can say goodbye to congestion. If your pores are clogged with excess sebum or blackheads, microdermabrasion helps with decongestion by clearing the way for a finer, clearer epidermis (the outer layer of skin). 4. If in the future you require or choose advanced treatments, your skin will be ready. Microdermabrasion is great prep before more advanced treatments, like Photo Rejuvenation, collagen induction, and Fractional CO2 Laser. It ensures treatments and skin care products are getting right to the forefront of skin cells from the get go for optimal, long-lasting results. 5. The process is simple and allows you to relax. It’s not only important to us that our treatments deliver results, but also that your time with us is relaxed and enjoyable. DEATH AND AGEING
// Jun 2017
“If you were to destroy in mankind the belief in immortality, not only love but every living force maintaining the life of the world would at once be dried up.” – Fyodor Dostoyevsky –
Last April, Indonesian man Mbah Gotho passed away having just four months' earlier celebrated what is believed to be his 146th birthday. It was reported that he had started to prepare for his passing as early as 1992, even having his tombstone made, and while there is said to be documentation confirming his birth of 31 December, 1870 in a small village in the Central Java province, it is yet to be independently verified. Until then, Jeanne Calment remains listed by the Guinness World Records as history’s oldest person. The Frenchwoman died in 1997 aged 122, having lived through two world wars and watched the Eiffel Tower being built. (There have been other claimants to the title such as Nigerian James Olofintuyi and Ethopian Dhaqabo Eba, whose apparent ages of 171 and 163 could not be authenticated by paperwork.) Calment put her longevity down to her active lifestyle, healthy diet, and the odd glass of wine, but astonishingly, she smoked from the age of 21 until she was 117.
are the little protective tips at the end,” molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn, who won a Nobel Prize for her work on the subject, tells the Guardian. Telomeres comprise repeating sequences of DNA protected by certain proteins, and during our lifetime they wear down, reducing their ability to protect our chromosomes which leads to cell deterioration — this is essentially ageing. A paper published by the National Center for Biotechnology reports factors such as obesity, stress, pollution, and smoking all contribute to the shortening of telomeres, to “affect the pace of aging and onset of age-associated diseases such as heart disease and cancer”.
Barring an accident or unfortunate disease, most who eat well and exercise regularly can reasonably expect to make 80, but beyond that, much is down to the lottery of our genes (Jeanne Calment’s lengthy nicotine habit goes some way to backing that up), or, more specifically our telomeres.
There are ways to dramatically reduce the decline of our telomeres — not just through the obvious means of eating well and working up a sweat a few times a week. Mediation, too, has shown to be a beneficial combatant against ageing — Harvard University’s Dr Rudolph Tanzi has conducted one of many research projects on the topic. “Based on our results, the benefit from mediation isn’t strictly psychological; there is a clear and quantifiable change in how our bodies function,” he says. Meditation can be an efficient method of providing “relief for our immune systems, easing the day-to-day stresses of a body constantly trying to protect itself”. “The prediction is that this would then lead to healthier ageing.”
“If you think of your chromosomes — which carry your genetic material — as shoelaces, telomeres

LEADING THE WAY IN NON-SURGICAL COSMETIC & MEDICAL TATTOO ENHANCEMENTS
LARGE PHOTO: Melissa Carr in her studio. TOP: Feathered Brows. BOTTOM L-R: Tattooed Eyeliner, Stage 3 Micropigmentation
Cosmetic and medical tattooing has become one of the most sought out services. One of only a few in New Zealand that is highly trained and qualified across a wide range of cosmetic and medical tattoo services is Melissa Carr of Melissa Carr Cosmetic Tattooing. A well-regarded operator and respected professional within the field. Melissa is skilled in providing 'undetectable' results in procedures such as feathered brows, eyeliner and lip tattooing, Scalp micropigmentation and nipple and areola re-pigmentation after breast reconstruction from cancer treatments. Not all are as in touch with the reality of the change they can have on someone nor as talented as Melissa, the results are clear in her before and after pics and glowing client testimonials.
WHAT’S
CURRENT? Melissa say’s, “Without a doubt, scalp
micropigmentation is the fastest-growing solution for male hair loss in recent history, it’s non-invasive, non-surgical, has universal appeal and is permanent.” A further point is that it remains the only permanent hair loss fix to offer instantaneous, guaranteed results. Brows, brow brows! Brows perfectly designed and placed with perfectly matched colour changes a face. It lifts and opens the face, your eye colour pops with intensity and, BOOM, a few years just vanish, simply by perfectly designed tattooed eyebrows. Melissa practises a technique that comes naturally to her with many years’ experience and the very best training.
BEAUTY AND WELLNESS BENEFITS: All cosmetic and medical tattoo procedures are non surgical, there is no downtime, no time off work needed and no hiding away from people. Advantageous for those wanting to opt for a non-surgical, risk free and a more natural approach to addressing life’s challenges and changes. Cosmetic tattooing is not limited to just brows eyes and lips, it is so much more. Melissa is very passionate about medical tattooing and is trained to tattoo not only scalp micropigmentation but also areola and nipples re-pigmentation for women who have
had breast reconstruction after surgery and is humbled by the difference this makes to the self-esteem and psyche of recipients — a very fulfilling part of what Melissa does. An example of how surgical and non-surgical services can work together.
BEAUTY ENHANCED: Beauty doesn’t stop at brows. A perfect eyeliner either wedged, winged or natural all enhance the eye, giving the appearance of thicker fuller lashes and a more open eye. Additionally, lips that no longer sustain their lip contour can be repigmented with Melissa’s meticulous skill and art, thus appearing defined and with a more youthful look.
EXPERIENCE, SKILL & CARE: Melissa has earned quite a
reputation with micro-pigmentation treatments such as feathered brows, ombré brows, eyeliner and lip tattooing or for those just wanting to correct nature’s imbalances and desire perfectly balanced brows, eyes or lips. Her services are an essential part of some people's lives, especially for those who are particularly active and want to maintain lasting makeup, maybe sight impaired or having medical conditions such as hand tremors through to more specialised services for alopecia sufferers, male pattern baldness or after cancer treatments. Melissa takes the time required to deliver the best service to each individual client, her focus is genuinely honed, meticulously considered and totally unique to each individual, and her work is based entirely on her client’s personal requirements.
INVITATION: Melissa invites you to view the many examples of her work and to read more about these treatments by visiting her website or call 021 187 2661 to book a no obligation consultation with her.

CLEANSER TIPS
// Jun 2017
Why should we use a cleanser? A cleanser is used to remove all traces of makeup and grease from the skin's surface. It is important that the cleanser does not cause any irritation (stop use immediately if this happens). A cleanser should feel nice on your skin with a smooth consistency and easily moved over the skin’s surface. Likewise, it should be easy to remove and cleanse efficiently. Try not to use highly scented cleansers and make sure you choose the right cleanser for you. Cleansers come in several different forms: • Milks • Creams • Lotions • Bars • Foaming facial cleansers • Cleansing wipes • Eye makeup removers Water and oil are included in some of the ingredients in cleansers. As these two substances together will separate when mixing, an emulsifier is added. This helps to stabilise the mix to form an emulsion. Some products have higher oil-to-water ratios and vice-versa. So which to use? It is important to choose the right one, so we will cover a little on each of the above forms of cleansers. Milk Cleansers These have a higher water-to-oil ratio that makes them more liquefied. Good for: • Sensitive skin • Dry skin (which can be easily irritated) • Younger skin, as it contains less oil >> Not so good for mature skin, as the water content is more drying Cleansing Creams These have a higher percentage of oil-to-water, which makes creams thicker and richer. With more oil, it makes it easier to smooth over the skin surface and causes less drag on the tissue. Best used on: • Mature and/or dry skin • Useful for deep cleansing massage Cleansing Lotions These do not contain oil. Cleansing lotions are normally unsuitable for removal of make-up because of the reduced oil content. Good for people with:
• Combination/normal skin types • Some cleansers are medicated, therefore useful on oily, acne and congested skin Cleansing Bars These are milder than normal soaps (which can upset the pH balance of the skin). A cleansing bar would be best used on a person with: • Combination skin • Normal to greasy skin (that is not sensitive) • Blemished skin (medicated cleansing bars) • If you are hooked on your soap and water routine and don’t like to change Eye Makeup Removers These come in oily and non-oily substances and in lotion or gel form. Oily substances are much better for the removal of oil-based eye shadows and mascara. Non-oily would be more suitable for sensitive skin (especially around the eye area and if you wear contact lenses). Facial Foaming Cleansers These are ideal if you like to wash your face with water. They contain mild detergents and when mixed with water, it will foam. They are good on: • Dry and sensitive skin • Congested, acne or blemished skin (medicated foaming cleansers) Cleansing Wipes They are quick and convenient. Not recommended for everyday use as they can be drying and will leave a residue on the face. Confused? Unclear? If you are not sure what is best for your skin, then pop down to your local chemist and try out some testers. It’s the cheapest way of finding out what is best for you before spending any money, and I am sure they will be more than happy and ready to assist you and choosing the right cleanser for your skin type and condition. Check out the texture of the product. Does it feel greasy? Does it smell? Does it contain lanolin? (There are some people who are allergic). Does it absorb into your skin well? There may be a chance for you to obtain some testers to take home and try out. It is important to choose the right cleanser for you, so make sure you take your time and listen to what your skin is telling you. __ Words: Donna Malneek

ILLUMINATE ME LEANNE DORÉ: THE FACIALIST

BASELINE
AFTER 5 WEEKS //
Owned by the uber-experienced Leanne Doré, Illuminate Me is private and discreet; the perfect place to tuck yourself away for a state of the art facial. A facialist for more than 30 years, Leanne was bowled over when she saw the results of Mesoestetic, a prestige skincare range new to our shores. “I only like to use the best of the best,” she says. “Mesoestetic is rich with amazing technology and ingredients.” What Is Mesoestetic? A cosmeceutical skincare range from Spain which combines exceptional results with a sensory experience. “Mesoestetic has nailed it with great textures and a cocktail of proven, skin-cherishing ingredients like peptides, retinols, and antioxidants,” says Leanne. The formulations also take our natural circadian rhythms into account so from day-to-day and hour-to hour the ingredients are time released, plus they’ve ecapsulated highly effective ingredients like retinol and glycolic acid, which many of us have a tendency to over-do (less is more people), so they work in a more gentle way. The Product Line: Collagen 360: stimulates collagen — firms the skin of the face and neck and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Energy C: addresses early signs of ageing providing antioxidants and vitamins to protect the skin. Stem Cell: promotes cell renewal and regeneration for more mature skins. Radiance DNA: works with the genetic code responsible for DNA repair making skin firmer and reducing wrinkles. Star Treatments: Mesoeclat method This is a five-session programme including peels to support and stimulate the skin's own defence mechanisms to improve firmness and luminosity.
The SRS machine The Skin Remodeling System (SRS) is a high-tech machine that works on facial muscle and bone to address loss of firmness and the bone mass loss that comes with age. It uses a hand piece and a meso gel conductor working at 3,000 cycles per second to impregnate all of the potent skin-loving ingredients like peptides, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants into the skin. Using micro-currents, ultrasound, iontopheresis and other technologies the SRS: • Stimulates cell renewal and the growth of new healthy skin. • Activates neo-collagen production restoring volume and elasticity to the skin, while plumping wrinkles. • Relaxes lines erasing the areas of facial expression such as crow’s feet and lip wrinkles. • Tightens the skin to a youthful smoothness and tautness. • Restores muscle tone by redefining the facial contour, lifting the cheeks and tightening neck and jaw line. “We do one half of your face first so you can see the results, which occur immediately,” says Leanne. “Then we even you up.” (Ask Leanne to combine it with Mesoestetic’s Beauty Flash you’ll be turning heads for days!) In-Clinic & Home Care Leanne has taken on Mesoestetic because of the wonderful results she’s seeing and because it allows her to design and tailor treatments to her clients’ specific needs. “It’s all about putting back to the skin and not taking out,” she says. “We can really change the skin. Replumping, remineralising, depigmenting, feeding and repairing. “The science behind it is key. The Crystal Fibre Mask came out of treatments in a hospital burns unit and is heavily impregnated with hyaluronic acid — a gold standard skin hydrator – and it creates a process that locks it into the skin. You can also buy a course of treatments in a box so you have your own personal in clinic treatment products.” — Words: Jenna Moore
Acnelan: An intensive treatment for acne prone skin which cleanses blocked pores, removes impurities and improves skin texture. Cosmelan: delivers incredible results with pigmentation in a one-off in clinic treatment and home care.

LOOKING BEYOND BOTOX DO YOU WANT TO LOOK MORE YOUTHFUL? AT LOUISE GRAY SKIN CARE OUR AGE MANAGEMENT TREATMENTS ARE DESIGNED TO DO JUST THAT.
These treatments are specifically created for age management and are noninvasive meaning you’ll look younger without injections. Does that sound good to you? We thought so. Our expert, skin therapist and registered nurse Louise Gray, weighs in on the benefits of each treatment and what makes them worth considering. Skin DNA Test: This is the ultimate in preventive treatment and care for your skin. It enables better control of the ageing process by looking at your unique, genetic makeup. This test should form the basis of your skin treatment and care because not everyone’s skin is the same. Diagnostic Skin Imaging: The camera never lies! This service provides you with a computerised in-depth analysis of your skin. Your scientific skin analysis will be used to help develop your personalised skin treatment program and skin care regimen. The imaging can also provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the treatments you’re undergoing. HYDRODERMABRASION: This is microdermabrasion on steroids. A safe, non-invasive exfoliation procedure that resurfaces the skin with an infused water solution to improve its tone and texture and minimise lines and wrinkles. LED LIGHT: This is generally performed as a series of treatments and delivers fantastic results with acne, pigmentation, sun damage and signs of ageing. This NASA-developed light treatment stimulates skin cells to boost collagen and nutrient production for a younger, healthier and firmer skin. MICRO-CURRENT: Imagine the tightening and toning of facial muscles and the smoothing out of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. That’s what you get with micro-current with immediate and dramatic results.
PEELS: If you’re looking for a brighter, smoother and renewed complexion our chemical peels treat a multitude of skin concerns including pigmentation, uneven skin texture, acne breakouts and premature ageing by resurfacing the skin with minimal downtime. Winter is the perfect time to start. CIT (also known as dermal rolling or skin needling): We call this the holy grail in non-invasive age management. It will improve texture, lines and wrinkles, scarring and skin tightness by encouraging the production of collagen. IPL SKIN REJUVANTION: Wake up your skin and begin to regrow new collagen with a targeted IPL rejuventation treatment. Light energy converts to mild heat to stimulate the cells that form collagen — the protein reponsible for the plumpness and density of your skin. INTERNAL SOLUTIONS: I am a strong believer that the skin is a mirror to what is happening within your body. If you feed your skin internally with all that nature has provided you’ll reap the rewards. EFAs — specifically flaxseed oil — is a ‘no-brainer’ for everyone in my opinion. The skin becomes hydrated from within and topical products work more effectively when the skin is functioning correctly so your treatments are more effective. We look forward to seeing you at Louise Gray Skin Care soon.
“True skincare happens when we establish the cause and effect of a skin condition rather than just treating the symptom.” LOUISE GRAY — Registered Nurse and Director of Louise Gray Skin Care

WINTER WEEKEND ESCAPE
The weather has turned cold and daylight hours have dwindled. The Auckland traffic is as awful as ever, and life is feeling just a bit too samey. Time for a seasonal mood-buster, but where to find one that won’t take too big a bite out of the bank account? The answer is easy: head on down to the spa capital of the South Pacific and find out why Rotorua offers the ultimate winter weekend getaway. The city’s beautiful forests, lakes and nature-based experiences make it the ultimate destination for refreshing the soul during the winter months. The abundance of natural geothermal energy means that there is always a blissful soak in a naturally heated hot pool just waiting to be enjoyed, with Polynesian Spa offering the near perfect experience. I love Polynesian Spa, for so many reasons, and visit on an annual basis. That view across the lake from the comfort of a hot spring brings on a deep feeling of tranquility without fail. The gulls of Sulphur Bay always busy, whooping, circling and landing. Then there is the Retreat, with its dazzling menu of treatments, from their Signature Mud Wrap and Aix therapy to aromatherapy and Swedish full body massage.
MINDFUL MOMENTS RETREAT A relatively new addition to Polynesian Spa is the MINDFUL MOMENTS RETREAT. It is a two-day weekend experience and offers anyone wanting to escape the rigours of city living with an ultimate spa experience. Hosted by Makaia Carr (makaiacarr.co.nz) and retreat manager Helena Keenan, the weekend is an exercise in becoming more
mindful, being in the here and now, and calming the mind. The programme is varied and interesting, and covers the how-to of meditation, and other relaxation techniques, interspersed with walks in the forest, really good food and conversation, your massage of choice, and long delicious soaks in warm healing waters. While there is so much to love about this fabulous weekend away, the highlights for me were the following: • The professionalism and in-depth subject knowledge of the programme facilitators. • Soaking in the hot springs (for which Polynesian Spa is famous). • The Aix hydrotherapy spa treatment — totally different to any other massage I have ever had, and utterly relaxing (especially for those with water in their birth signs). • The tasty, wholesome food, teas and juices. • Being introduced to the Shakti acupressure mat. • The early morning yoga/stretch session on the shores of the lake. But perhaps one of the best things about this retreat, is its affordability and the ease of getting there (45-minute flight, or 3hr 15min drive from Auckland). If, like me, you love the idea of participating in a wellness retreat, but simply can’t afford the thousands of dollars’ price tag, then a MINDFUL MOMENTS RETREAT is for you. With a price tag of just $479 per person, who can resist? The next Mindful Moments Retreat will be held Saturday 24 June - Sunday 25 June. __ Words: Agnes Harrison POLYNESIANSPA.CO.NZ/MINDFUL-MOMENTS-RETREAT
SPA THERAPY TIPS FROM RETREAT MANAGER, HELENA KEENAN As retreat manager, Helena notices many clients struggle to switch off from their busy lives as they come in for therapy. However, clients that come in for regular therapies seem to switch off much quicker. The secret, she says, is making time before and after the therapy to truly relax. “Before you come in for a therapy, I’d suggest giving yourself an hour or two to wind down so you can fully enjoy the treatment. If possible, don’t go straight back into something busy or stressful after the therapy.” The many benefits of spa therapies are similar to those of physical exercise. Helena suggests monthly treatments to maximise the benefits on one’s health and wellness. “A monthly spa therapy is ideal for people to get through life on top of their game. Constant spa therapy allows you to reach a state of complete relaxation, and reduces your levels of stress. It’s ideal, especially when life is so hectic.”

"I have just experienced the most amazing facial from Sue at Finesse. My partner treated me and I had the most relaxing time. My skin felt so soft, tight, refreshed and renewed afterwards, and of course the smell was just divine - manuka honey mask!!! Sue also took the time to assess my skin, which has caused me some concerns for many years. Sue advised 'we can easily take care of that' as I relayed my concerns, and subsequently I have booked in for my next session. Sue makes you feel at ease, at home and more importantly I trust she has my best interest at heart, and I totally recommend her and her fabulous treatments. Thanks Sue - see you soon" - Debbie

On the clinic menu, you’ll find classic customised facials, pressure point massage, lymphatic massage and advanced skin and body treatments. After training in the UK, Sue began Finesse with the Microtone Non-Surgical Facelift which uses 12 pads and probes to stimulate the muscles like a mini facial gym. It tones and boosts oxygenation and circulation. There’s also an option to use rollers to perform an even deeper lift. “We see phenomenal results with it,” says Sue. “We have clients who have been coming for 15 years, and their skin has barely aged.” Sue also uses state-of-the-art technology to treat the body. “We have Ultrasound for Cellulite and Bodyform Intensive Toning which uses pads to break down fat, improve circulation and re-contour hips, thighs, butt and arms for impressive inch loss. You need from eight to 16, half-hour treatments for best results,” says Sue. Then there’s microdermabrasion as well as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light laser) which is great for skin rejuvenation, treating acne, pigmentation and hair removal. Dermablading is also on hand. It gives a gentle exfoliation and removes the peach fuzz hairs from the skin; CIT (Collagen Induction Therapy) aka needling is one of Finesse’s most popular treatments. “We use a dermapen from Germany, which has tiny needles and disposable tips,” says Sue. “Not
Another sophisticated treatment is the Hyaluron SkinCoach Facial which uses a cold laser to activate cell activity followed by heated hyaluronic acid massaged into the skin before finishing off with the cold laser at a different wavelength with polymerised molecules. The wavelength makes the molecules into long chains so the body’s lymphatic system can’t break the effects down easily. “It works particularly well for thin, dry skin which is immediately hydrated and plumped.” The famous Green Peel is another favourite. It’s been renowned globally for about 40 years. Hailing from Germany it’s part of the Schrammek range and uses a medically formulated potent mix of natural herbs with enzymes, minerals and vitamins to retexture and beautify the skin. “The Green Peel resurfaces like nothing else other than laser,” says Sue. “It’s very firming.” In addition, Sue offers a range of lactobotanical, retinol, salicylic and glycolic peels along with the superior skincare and treatments of Osmosis and Aspect skincare ranges. “We’ve really come to understand that aside from the sun and gravity, collagen loss is a major factor in ageing,” says Sue. “I recommend doing something treatment-wise to give the skin a bump and stimulate collagen at least every nine months to one year. Three things on my list would be IPL, CIT and the Green Peel.”

COSMETIC DENTISTRY TREATMENTS AND TRENDS Our smile should be our greatest gift — yet for many of us, it causes great embarrassment. Missing, broken, rotten or crooked teeth - these dental conditions can ruin our desire to smile. These days though, cosmetic dentistry is commonplace and an easy confident smile is yours for the picking. Verve chats to dentist, Dr. Andrew Campbell of The Tooth Company about cosmetic dentistry. What are the most common reasons for patients asking about a smile makeover? There are many reasons why patients enquire about smile makeovers, but generally the main reason is embarrassment of some sort of imperfection with the appearance of the teeth. Yellow teeth, chipped teeth, stained teeth, crooked teeth and poorly shaped teeth are all reasons that can create this embarrassment that often leads to a discussion with a dentist about options.
BEFORE
AFTER
How can you determine the best dentist or specialist to see for your cosmetic dentistry? It is important to see someone who has experience in this field. No one case is the same and a lot is learnt with experience. A practice that has a multidisciplinary approach (meaning a collaboration between specialists) is also important. It is also vital to make sure the dentist works with a good dental technician as the technician is the artist in much of the dental work. What’s your experience or view on people travelling overseas to receive cosmetic dentistry? It’s a bit of a mixed bag. I have seen some nice work and some very poor work – I have also seen the same here in New Zealand – however the poor work overseas can be very poor. My biggest concern is the lack of regulation in cross infection in some of these countries and the risk that poses.
Can you explain these treatments and what they’re best for: *Crowns and Veneers? Crowns and veeners are ceramic rebuilds of teeth. Ceramic is a material that mimics tooth enamel – it is aesthetically very similar and also very hard. Veneers are used to rebuild front teeth that may be chipped discoloured or have an irregular shape. Veneers almost act as a contact lens over the tooth to recreate a nice looking tooth. *Full mouth reconstruction? This treatment is for when a mouth is literally falling apart. We rebuild entire mouths back to proper function and aesthetics. *Orthodontic treatment Orthodontic treatment is used to straighten teeth that are crooked or misaligned – also orthodontics is used to correct jaw size discrepancies. There are multiple options available these days – traditional braces and Invisalign (invisble braces) are the two most common forms of treatment. *Teeth whitening Teeth whitening can be performed two ways – either a DIY take home kit or an in-chair treatment with a dental hygienist. The combination of the two together works very well. Teeth whitening does not damage your teeth and always gives people a bit of a boast in self-esteem when smiling. What are the costs involved in cosmetic procedures and do you offer payment options? Cosmetic dentistry treatment can range from a simple case of whitening starting at $385 through to a full smile makeover at around $10,000. It is important to have a plan tailored to your expectations and budget. Q Card with its 12 month interest-free is our most common financial product for smile makeovers. The cost of a consultation to talk about your options is $75.

Eliminate stubborn fat that diet and exercise can not budge with CoolSculpting, the only FDAand TGA-approved non-surgical fat reduction machine in the world. With built in safety devices and more than 2.3 million treatments worldwide, CoolSculpting has proven to be the safest and most effective way of reducing fat.
“Wobbly arms and sides of the waist that spill out over clothes or ruin the look of a favourite outfit are commonly requested areas in men and women,” Stephen says. “Women also want the fat on their back to be reduced. This is where a bulge of fat forms over the top of the bra or bikini. And many want slimmer inner and outer thighs to create the look of longer, leaner legs. Men want the classic masculine V-shape, where their chest is wider than their stomach, as well as a flattening of the stomach. And with CoolSculpting now available to address the fat under the chin, we are seeing an increase in demand to slim down this area. This typically takes
two treatments whereas many of the other areas take only one treatment to achieve the desired look.” CoolSculpting does not require an anaesthetic, nor does it have any downtime. INTERPRETING FASHION
44
I was scrolling through my Instagram feed while having coffee recently and realised that so much of what I was seeing, while beautiful, would be impossible for me to wear (I follow mostly fashion stuff). You see, no matter how much exercise I do, I don’t have amazing legs. Nor do I have a midriff worth baring (I once did have the coveted six-pack). Yes, I’m slim but I am also busty and curvy, and the tops of my thighs touch. It was a sad realisation that around 90% of what I was looking at wasn’t going to work for me. Yes, I’m getting older (although recent studies tell us that due to lifestyle changes that doesn’t mean what it once did), and I remember women in my past lamenting that fashion is for the young.
There’s many ways to stay current; buy a new pair of boots every winter to stay up to date, wear a dress rather than boring black pants, grab a rock and roll tee (at least you’ll know what they sang), seek out some leather or drop-crotch pants, keep accessorising, find great jackets of many styles (not just blazers), keep playing and having fun. Step away from the waterfall cardigans and merino tops and find more stylish ways to stay warm!
Being slightly rebellious (a long-held trait — ask my mum and my two ex-husbands), I’m refusing to believe that. I think fashion can be interpreted for who you are. As we get older, we might choose to eschew the short, the tight, the low-cut, but that doesn’t mean we need to swamp ourselves in oversized or shapeless garments, or give up altogether for a uniform of black pants and different coloured tops. Instead, look for choices that work for you — a beautifully cut jacket worn over a dress, gorgeous slim pants worn with a silk shirt or fabulously cut layers creating interest through the body. If the hemline is short, an opaque tight is your saviour, if a dress is sleeveless add a leather biker or fun bomber.
Want a hand to see what works for you? I'd love to help you have a bit more fun with your wardrobe choices. Why not get in touch?

One of the most simple ways to guarantee you flood your body with nutrients is to embrace the rich colours that are abundant in fresh produce. Join us on a tour of the super-duper wellbeing cocktail red and purple fruits and veggies deliver: Apples: high in fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants, which are believed to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s. Apples also contain pectin, which is a prebiotic fibre that feeds the good bacteria in the gut aiding digestion. Beetroot: packed with potent minerals like manganese, potassium, iron and vitamin C, folate, beetroot is also a great source of gut-loving fibre. Berries: this is an umbrella term for raspberries, cranberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries, which are great choices as they’re antioxidant powerhouses, low in fructose (sugar), and delicious. The most nutritious of the lot is the blueberry. Blueberries have exceptional antioxidant levels with vitamin A, vitamin B-complex, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, manganese, copper, iron, zinc, selenium and fibre. Phew! Cherries: renowned for their melatonin content which is a natural sleep aid, cherries also contain anti-inflammatory anthocyanins and carotenoids. Eggplant (aka aubergine): contains a little-known antioxidant known as nasunin which is believed to protect the brain, as well as vitamins B1, K, manganese, niacin, folate and copper. Kumara (aka sweet potato): rich in beta-carotene which converts to vitamin A in the body, fibre for gut health, resistant starch for feeding friendly bacteria and vitamins C, E, B6, B5 and potassium and manganese. Passionfruit: especially high in vitamins C and A, passionfruit also contains polyphenols so may protect against chronic inflammation as well as protecting vision. Pomegranates: anti-inflammatory and believed to help reduce the risk of cancer, pomegranates have higher antioxidant levels than green tea and red wine.
Plums: packed with polyphenols, which are beneficial for bone health and the reduction of heart disease and diabetes, plums are also a very good source of anthocyanins. Radishes: contain folate, vitamin B6, fibre for gut health, potassium, and minerals like riboflavin, copper, magnesium and calcium. Red cabbage: chock full of vitamin C and anthocyanins, red cabbage is believed to protect the heart and liver and keep cholesterol levels in a healthy range. Red capsicum: rich in antioxidants such as vitamins C, B6, E, A and potassium and folate as well as quercetin which helps prevent heart disease and cancer, red capsicum also contain the cancer protectant capsanthin. Red grapes: high in antioxidants, grapes also contain anthocyanins and resveratrol which are antiinflammatory and lower your risk of disease. Red (Spanish) onions: with antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties, studies have shown these bulb’s may also reduce cancer risk, lower blood sugar, and boost bone health. Red potato: packed with potassium, vitamin C, folate and vitamin B6, red potatoes also contain resistant starch, which helps with digestive health and friendly colon bacteria. Rhubarb: vitamin K is at good levels in rhubarb, as well as vitamin C. It’s also high in good-for-the-gut fibre and contains polyphenols, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins levels similar to red wine and cocoa. Tamarillos: filled with vitamins A, C, E, pro-vitamin A. B-Complex niacin, thiamine and riboflavin as well as calcium, potassium, copper, zinc and iron tamarillos are great for blood pressure, the heart and protecting against cancer. Tomatoes: well-known for their lycopene content which is revered for its link to reduced heart disease and cancer risk tomatoes are also rich in vitamin C, K, folate and potassium. __ Words: Jenna Moore

This pretty salad reminds me of autumn, when I start to crave earthy flavours like beetroot and lentils. That’s not to say it’s heavy and boring though! Purple basil has a slight liquorice flavour — if you can’t find it, the more common green basil is just as tasty.

GOAT’S CHEESE & HONEYCOMB FILO CIGARS These filo cigars cheese and honey impressive dessert dessert
are so versatile, and the combination of goats’ is golden. Serve as a pre-dinner canapé or an that doubles as a cheese platter — because any with cheese is a winner in my books.
MAKES 4 AS A DESSERT | 6–8 AS AN ENTRÉE TAKES 35 MINUTES
METHOD
INGREDIENTS • 4 sheets filo pastry • 50g butter, melted • 100g soft goat's cheese • 2 Tbsp honey • 8 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves only • honeycomb • extra fresh thyme leaves, to garnish
1. Preheat your oven to 180°C. Line an oven tray with baking paper. 2. Unroll your first sheet of filo pastry. Brush it generously with butter, and place another sheet of filo on top. 3. Crumble half the goat's cheese along the horizontal length of the pastry, approximately 2cm from the bottom edge. Drizzle goat's cheese with half the honey. Top with a sprinkling of thyme leaves. 4. Starting from the bottom, roll the pastry up and over the goat cheese, and continue rolling until you have a long cigar. Brush with a little extra butter to seal. 5. Repeat with the two remaining sheets of pastry and the remaining goat's cheese, honey and thyme. 6. Cut both cigars to your desired length, and place them on the lined baking tray. Brush with the remaining butter and bake for 15–20 minutes, until golden-brown and crispy. 7. Serve immediately, with a drizzle of honeycomb and a sprinkling of extra thyme leaves to garnish. 8. Filo 101 Filo sheets tend to dry out quickly, so store them under a damp tea towel while you’re not working with them. 9. Tip: Substitute the thyme for your favourite herb or spice — fennel seeds, cinnamon and lavender all work well.

Most commonly associated with cuisine for both flavouring and colouring, saffron is used in dishes like paella, risotto, and bouillabaisse. “It can also be taken as a tea, beneficial for good sleep and general wellbeing,” says Jo. Food writer Oliver Thring describes its complex aroma as “gentle but overpowering, as delicate as a surgeon and as sharp as a bitch-slap”, likening the smell to “hay, the ocean, diesel, bonfire embers and well-rotted apples”. Its intricacies have been capturing the imagination for thousands upon thousands of years—it is a spice that famously costs more than its weight in gold.
Saffron’s famous threads protrude from between the petals of crocus sativus, but as there are only 1-3 strands in each one, it takes more than 4,000 flowers to make just one ounce of the spice — hence its hefty price tag. Plus, the harvesting window soon blows closed.
Fifty thousand-year-old cave paintings in modernday Iraq were created using the flower’s dye, while ancient Greek images on the island of Santorini show a goddess watching over a lady harvesting the crop. Chinese writings from 1,600BC mention the flower, and Cleopatra (of course) was a fan. Wealthy Romans regularly added saffron to their baths and wines as well as using it for mascara and offering it their gods.
“Flowering season lasts around 45 days,” says Jo. “Mature flowers are picked early and processed the same day to ensure maximum freshness and quality. Saffron likes hot summers and frosty winters. The autumn drop in soil temperature begins the growing process, with green shoots and then flowers appearing in the early morning.” In Iran, by far the world’s largest producer, Saffron growing dates back 3,000 years, accounting for 90% of the global stock. The remaining 10% is split mainly between Greece, Morocco, India and Afghanistan (attempts have been made to persuade Afghan poppy farmers to grow saffron instead, alas the opium trade is still twice as lucrative), making a New Zealand setup something of an anomaly. “To our knowledge, we are the southernmost growers in the country,” says Jo. “The soil of our elevated fields is sandy and free draining—ideal for saffron as it does not like wet feet.” High levels of UV light also leads to increased crocin levels in the saffron—crocin is the chemical responsible for colour intensity. Jo has the saffron tested in Europe, where it needs to score more than 190 to be considered Grade A. “We are immensely proud of our 300 crocin score, having not seen such a high result published before,” she says. “Due to the intense red colour, Kiwi saffron is potent, usually only a third of the quantity is require compared to imported product.”
“Due to its high value, imported saffron is often adulterated with other plants such as turmeric and safflower or dye,” says Jo. “The most common disguise is in powdered saffron.” Saffron has long been held in such high regard that selling a fraudulent version of the flower in Middle Ages Europe was even punishable by death. Throughout history, the spice has been revered for its health benefits too, its rich, red colour, says Jo, “hints at its medicinal nature, particularly rich in carotenoids, antioxidants that prevent the body from free radical damage”. More than 100 components further include vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, it has been used to alleviate everything from stomach complaints to fevers to cardiovascular disease. Several more recent studies have shown it can manage macular degeneration of the eye. “We confess to being completely smitten by this beguiling, unique and magical plant,” says Jo, “and are committed to promoting its growth in New Zealand.”

“It's always a wonderful time waiting for the first flowers to appear as if by magic in early April,” says Jo Daley, who, along with Steve Daley, owns Kiwi Saffron, pioneering organic saffron growers and marketers on the outskirts of Te Anau. “The flowers smell like violets, totally different to the dried stigmas which we liken to a combination of honey and fresh hay. We keep bees and it’s always cheering to see them moving among the flowers as we pick. They're always happy in their work— no one has been stung yet! It is said that saffron means joy and happiness, and during processing there is always a lot of friendly banter among our pickers, not to mention the most wonderful aroma.”

More than any other region, Marlborough is its own. It’s a beat that sets the pace for the entire wine industry and home to some of the country’s most iconic brands. All the big names are here. In all of Marlborough there is one name that has grown from small beginnings to one of the largest vineyards in the county. That name is Yealands. In little more than a decade, Yealands has become a household name here and across the globe, emerging as one of the most successful exporters as well as winning numerous international awards to epitomise the brand. The winery is state-of-the-art with stunning vistas over 1,800 hectares of vines that extend all the way out to the ocean. Better still is their ultra-modern cellar door and a place where everyone is welcome. “Wine is our passion,” says Peter Yealand. “We embrace the challenge of crafting all our wines from the ground up.” Here are three from my cellar that weigh-in at under $30 to deliver value for money. — Words: Dennis Knill

PLUME. PATIO DINING AT ITS BEST
It’s a sunny Saturday in May. I feel a visit to Matakana coming on. Thoughts of the market, with its wafting smells of freshly ground coffee, fragrant foods, softly scented soaps and candles, and uplifting live music filter in. After this, a visit to my favourite Matakana restaurant is on the cards. Nothing beats Plume on a fine day, with its vistas across gently rolling countryside, and that wonderful feeling of space served up with heaps of comfort. For me and my man, no visit to Matakana is complete without one of those long, lazy lunches at this popular rural restaurant. Why do I like Plume so much you may ask? For so many reasons, some of which I have shared below. I love the fact that they have a cellar door and that you can taste and talk about the wines produced right there with the people who make them. The most recent addition to their shopping list is a beautiful bubbly (méthode traditionelle) aptly named Joy: a totally different taste sensation, dry, light, and crafted from 100% cabernet franc grapes. If you are an alcohol-free sort of person then the Runner Duck Grape Juice is so worth trying, 100% additive-free, made from syrah and malbec grapes, it is not overly sweet, and has a unique just-picked taste.
Staff members are interested and professional, and make one feel at home the moment one steps across the threshold. Service is friendly and engaged and everyone is always happy. Nothing is too much trouble! The menus offer a generous choice, with items to suit almost any palate and persuasion, and include a kids' menu, sharing suggestions, and some authentic Indian curry options. I enjoyed the tortellini with pumpkin and cardamom, red onion jam, and goat cheese cream. It was delicious. I consumed every last morsel, leaving nothing on the plate. My partner’s prawn peri peri was fiery as, reminiscent of Africa and Europe. He loved it. For those who enjoy spicy foods with a punch, this should be your go-to dish. For dessert, we shared a Baileys cheesecake, served with mixed nut crumble and fruit compote. Rich and creamy, it was a delightful finale to our post-market lunch in the sun. Next time you are feeling tired of urban sprawl and in need of something rural to rest your eyes upon, I highly recommend a pleasant one-hour drive north to Plume. The experience will tickle your taste buds and soothe your soul. __ Words: Agnes Harrison

PLUME IS A WELL-ESTABLISHED RURAL RESTAURANT
A five-star restaurant with a stunning, fusion menu, the Vodka Room boasts a warm and decadent atmosphere with extraordinary service (a big thanks to our waiter, Umut), supported by a warm, hands-on owner. The Vodka Room has a charm of its own — subdued lighting and stunning glass chandeliers, contrast against interior walls made from demolition timber from a hanger in Queenstown. The exotic and natural blend of fabrics and textures makes one reflect on the journey and will of Korean-Russian owner, Vera.
VODKA ROOM
Vera is passionate about her restaurant, a driving force in designing the décor, with Kevin Harris, and selecting exquisitely coloured handmade vodka glasses and serving plates. Every detail was meticulously planned to create the unique character that is her “Vodka Room”. ENTRÉE and MAINS The culinary concept is shared platters. The proportions are generous, while the range of tastes and dishes reflects the owner’s heritage. Our choices for the evening were guided in part by waiter Umut. For our entrée we sampled from the ‘Cold Eats’ section caviar on buttered black bread; pashtet — chicken liver and truffle pate, duck fat nappe, pickled mushrooms, cranberry jam and grilled bread; and blini rolls — Russian king crab, salmon, pickled cucumber, and dill. Each was beautifully presented and matched with a vodka for my partner, Gerard, and a delightful cocktail called Anastasia — St. Germain; prosecco and lime for me. Our mains were from the ‘Warm Eats’ section. Pelmeni — steamed pork and kimchi dumpling, chill, chives (6 pieces); vareniki — pan fried potato and cheese dumplings (6), crispy onions, drizzled with truffle butter and herbs; and shashlik, a char-grilled spiced skewer of pork with baby onions, bay leaf and Russian ketchup, succulent and mouth-watering in equal measure. Hard to pick a favorite here. DESSERT Umut, persuaded us to try dessert, recommending the kefir and honey pana cotta and the sour cream mousse with black Russian jelly, caramelised walnuts, and tonka bean. This second desert was truly exquisite! DRINKS Gerard chose to have a Russian vodka which was served in a beautiful, chilled red glass, while I opted for a cocktail of elderflower, prosecco, and lime. From the well-planned wine list we went for a pinot noir. SPECIAL OCCASIONS There are three rooms upstairs for cocktail evenings and private functions, with a setup for karaoke, perfect as a wedding venue, hens’- and birthday parties and of course for corporate functions. THREE ROOMS UPSTAIRS you can book for your next CELEBRATION • Rose Room — function room and the largest of the rooms upstairs (with its own bar), it’s suitable for up to 60 people. • Kalashnikov Room — the smallest private dining/karaoke room, you'll remember it for the red and black interior and Kalashnikovs adorning the walls (6-12 people). • Bear Room — a mid-size option for 12-20 guests.

But whether you’re after a fragrantly delightful rose, or something that looks stunning, there is bound to be a rose out there for you. Though at times the sheer number of roses available, along with the associated terminology, can get a bit confusing. So, to make things easier, here is a beginner’s guide to some useful terms and our top varieties to start growing.

COMMON TERMS Climbing: Rambling or trailing roses. They grow best when trained against a structure such as a trellis or a fence. Bush: A shrubby rose. Generally best when trained into an open vase shape. Standards: Generally a bush rose that has been grafted onto a long, straight stem. Carpet Rose: Trailing, hardy roses that work best as a ground cover. Tend to be very disease-resistant. David Austin: Bred by renowned rose breeder David Austin, these roses often have the fragrance and appearance of an oldfashioned rose with the vigour, repeat flowering and diseaseresistance of modern varieties. Hybrid Tea: Each bloom forms on a single longer stem. Floribunda: Blooms form in clusters.

TOP 5 VARIETIES Iceberg: Easy-care white bush rose can be grown as a standard. Disease-resistant and perfect for the novice. Abraham Darby: Bred by David Austin, this delightful bush rose produces large cupped blooms in shades of pink, apricot and yellow. Their fruity fragrance has a refreshing tartness. Blackberry Nip: This New Zealand-bred bush rose produces gorgeous plum-purple flowers with an alluring rose scent. Dublin Bay: Delightful clusters of red flowers are produced profusely from summer through till autumn. Sir Edmund Hilary: This vigourous, strong and hardy climber produces delightfully fragrant white blooms with a cream centre. THE PLATES OF PARNELL The past few years we have seen teams of gastronomy buffs cross town to follow the resurgence in Parnell, opening hospitality offerings a plenty. Parnell now boasts a range of places to eat, from cafés to fine dining and arguably one of the most diverse cultural foodie offerings in a single suburb. In addition to iconic top class fine dining you can savour Chinese, Filipino, Greek, Indian, Indonesian, Italian, Nepalese, Japanese, Malaysian, Persian, Peruvian, Thai, and Turkish. Not forgetting a trendy smokehouse, opulent cocktail bar and a new ‘close-to-nature’ degustation offer that was voted top restaurant in Auckland 2016. Until 2015, the fine dining reputation in Parnell was graciously upheld by Antione’s and Cibo, with delicious ethnic dining options offered for locals and tourists by the likes of NSP, Oh Calcutta, Gion and Blue Elephant — amongst others. Leading the charge of new establishments that captured the attention of the media, Mark Wallbank opened Woodpecker Hill in 2015, with chef Che Barrington revelling in the chance to engage his long-time passion for barbecued meat cooked low and slow, dressed with fresh, spicy Asian flavours. Recently nominated for Outstanding Chef at the 2017 Lewisham Awards, the skater boy from Castor Bay is still making our taste buds zing. Last year saw the opening of Osteria, an extension of Antonio Crisci’s notable Italian offering and now the street-front of long time Parnell favourite, Non Solo Pizza, followed by the ‘2 P’s’, each as diverse as the other.
Conceived by Christopher Richwhite together with the duo behind 46 & York, Pineapple saw the birth of a truly special drinking experience, unlike anything in Auckland. Set in a lavish otherworldly interior, the drinks list is a veritable selection of New Zealand’s best, plus cocktails that can only be described as phenomenal beverage experiences. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Ed and Laura Verner arrived in Parnell with their niche degustation offering, open fire and a list of foraged ingredients most of us had only read about. Passionate about local seasonal produce and expressing flavours through traditional preserving and fermentation methods, they were rated Viva’s top restaurant of 2016 and have just won Best New Restaurant in the Metro Top 50 Awards. Over the summer holidays, Azon quietly appeared in Parnell. With genteel décor and MasterChef runner up Leo Fernandez at the helm, it is gaining a reputation for distinctive Filipino fare. Certainly missing from Parnell until early 2017 was a great café offering — enter Fran Mazza and Aaron Carson, former owners of Little Sister and Epsom’s Hello Friends + Allies. Baked on the premises, Winona Forever has brought an outrageous selection of delights to choose from. You’ll be hard pushed to choose from brioche-centred brekkies, delicious sweet sensations, fresh salads, generously stuffed vegetables and an all-day menu with great coffee. Since the closure of Iguaçu, locals have watched the site with longing, wondering who would arrive to fill the shoes of this once loved Parnell institution. Curated by Paul Izzard Design, the interior
PP of plush teal velvet furnishings, gold brass fittings and deep grey leather is now Gerome. Downstairs, the bar is surrounded by boothstyle seating, while the mezzanine provides more booths plus a large deck and private dining room. Influenced by changing seasons and abundance of New Zealand produce, the food is based loosely on the flavours from the Greek Islands. Prominent head chef James Kenny, trained by Gordon Ramsay, will lead the culinary team creating their works over the charcoal and wood barbecue. While Carlaw Park has been well looked after with the charm of Di Vino, down the hill in St Georges Bay Rd we’ve watched as cherished wool stores and warehouses have been renovated and occupied by businesses desirous of atmosphere and fringe city access. Traditionally anchored by the fabulous La Cigale Bistro & Market and fine dining Cibo, significant development potentially signalling another 1,000 people working in the area, will provide many more hospitality options, some of which are set to open in the next few weeks. Maldito Mendez is relocating from Ponsonby Central to Faraday Street with a new offering called Barulho, a Euro-Latin bar with a sunny courtyard, house made pastries and tapas. Goodness Gracious Café & Bagelry opened in Eden Terrace in 2014 and has become one of a handful of places that real bagel lovers will seek out for their treatment of this delicious round of dough. They have become renowned for their consistent quality menu as an
essential ‘go-to' for a dine in or take out all day menu. Soon to be in Parnell, who wouldn’t enjoy the classic bagel with smoked salmon and lemon caper cream cheese, the Kransky Bagel (with speciality Westmere kransky, cheese, rocket and aioli), or the Wilbur bagel with spiced pulled pork and house made coleslaw? Then to complete the mix, the corner of St Georges Bay Road and Faraday Street will soon be home to a new venture from the impressive team behind Little King, Dear Jervois and Major Sprout. With a look, cuisine and atmosphere that’s very easy to fall for, this team have made their name across town with bright and welcoming interiors, delicious food and cafés constantly buzzing with people. Simon & Lee (aptly named after Oliver Simon and David Lee) will serve breakfast, lunch and snacks, alongside wine, beer and coffee. Well known for their irresistible and tasty Korean influences, the menu will mix modern café alongside traditional Korean. Think classic eggs benedict sitting alongside dolsot bibimbap, acai bowls alongside mandu (Korean dumplings). Opening in the winter months, we look forward to these new additions to a growing hospitality offering in this burgeoning district. — PARNELL.NET.NZ

TIMOTHY JONES 'THE SPACE BETWEEN'
PARNELL GALLERY — 4-18 JULY EXHIBITION PREVIEW — TUESDAY 4 JULY, 5.30PM In Timothy Jones’s upcoming exhibition we are presented with an arresting body of new works in the artist's contemporary abstract style. His paintings emerge from the canvas in bursts of fluid, dynamic expression, giving the viewer a sense of being witness to an elemental event.
TOP-BOTTOM: In the studio with Timothy. — 'The Ocean Refuses No River' polymer & acrylic on canvas 1000 x 1000mm — 'Genesis I' Polymer & acrylic on panel 540 x 540mm RIGHT: 'The Space Between' Polymer & acrylic on canvas 1370 x 1110mm
263 PARNELL ROAD, AUCKLAND 09 377 3133 | PARNELLGALLERY.CO.NZ
In 'The Ocean Refuses No River' a range of paint application is utilised, from subtle washes which allow the medium to run and stain the canvas; to authentic layering of energetic but controlled brushstrokes towards the centre of the canvas. These might suggest waves, rocks or mountains, and stir a counterpart in our emotional landscapes. The dramatic colour palette is of darkhued blues through to icy whites of the foreground, interspersed with warmer earth tones. The palette further reflects the artist's affinity with the natural world and particularly the sea. Jones has a spirit of adventure in life as in art and has travelled extensively spending several years working on yachts, during which time he circumnavigated the globe. In 'The Space Between' we are brought closer to the pictorial drama as the artist explores variations of dynamic colour
and movement, brushstokes advancing and retreating from the picture plane. In 'Uncharted Territory', a circular format enhances the suggestion of an almost molecular cross section of painterly movement. Further, in 'Genesis I' we seem to move right inside Jones’s world of fluid movement, denoted via skilful brush marks that have been isolated at a point of optimum integrity and relationship to each other. Through this deconstruction of his aesthetic through exploration of its different aspects, Jones appears to demonstrate the notion that all things are derived from the same source. Reflections on space, time and the ‘eternal moment’ are thus invited by these intuitive, skilfully presented abstracts. Jones’s work is held in private collections and prestigious public placements both here and abroad. We are invited to witness his continued development in this stunning collection. This solo exhibition, The Space Between will be on show at Parnell Gallery 4–18 July 2017.

“It’s not yet a destination retail area, but it does have a very strong sense of character,” says Jeff. “Thousands of people of people work in there every day, they need lunch and coffee, and with the opening of further retail on Faraday Street there will be a more diverse offer. The imminent opening of Barulho will bring a neighbourhood bistro and a wine bar to the mix.”
The presence of Uber, Xero and other tech companies has brought a further dynamic, the community spirit between the resident firms adds to the creative, can-do vibe which Jeff likens to a sense gained in warehouse areas of San Francisco. Visually, Jeff suggests the hub reminiscent of Manhattan’s West Village or some aspects of the design district in Milan, but states that it still retains its “own definite sense”. Certainly, in the city, there is nowhere else quite like it.

Thanks to the likes of Jeff and Tim that potential is becoming realised, with a thriving pocket neighbourhood developing fast: “Our building is a small piece of the puzzle with larger landholdings all around us." It’s been 18 months since Fearon Hay Architects opened their stunning loft office space on Parnell's Faraday Street among a cluster of former wool stores and warehouses adjacent to St Georges Bay Road, spaces that had long been admired by architect Jeff Fearon. “I actually remember visiting those buildings a very long time ago to purchase linen, and thought they were fantastic,” he says. “When the opportunity came around Tim [Hay, partner] and I took one look at the building and said absolutely. Not only are the buildings incredible, but the area itself had so much untapped potential, we were very keen to get involved.”
HARRY STYLES
68
Harry Styles is a rockstar. The former One Direction member — a cheeky, curly-haired hearthrob and fan-favourite — isn't about imitation or emulation of his legendary idols, nor is he rebelling in a plea to lose his good boy image and largely female fanbase — my man simply just IS the real deal.
on conspicuously titled 'Kiwi' and 'Carolina's repetitive, "She's a good girl / she's such a good girl / feels so good"). Every song finds common ground though, in their shared detachment from sounding quite like they belong in a solid, specific decade.
During my years invested in being a passionate 1D fangirl and not a lot else, I was a self proclaimed Zayn girl through and through. But since the early days, Harry's glow conveyed potential destined for bigger boundaries — even if Louis was your fave, you knew it. We were all aware Zayn would eventually go on to become an R&B smooth talker; his disconnect from One Direction's bubblegum pop confinement growing more obvious as did the band's own prominence. But who is Harry Styles beyond the commercialism and puppeteering?
Although recognising their mutual exclusivity, Harry Styles practises coexistence with his individual aspirations and 1D roots, which he refuses to let define him yet doesn't let undermine the credibility of his solo musical pursuits; graciously paying homage to what gave him his start instead of treating his history as a burden to his future. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Harry continued to restore humanity's faith and endorse 1D and the opportunities the group granted him despite their indefinite hiatus, confiding sincerely: "I love the band, and would never rule out anything in the future. The band changed my life, gave me everything."
On his inaugural self titled solo album, Harry Styles is nothing less than a 70s rock-evoking mirage, an old soul shed of all manufacturing and in its shadow leaving authenticity and a brazen composure that reads like a reintroduction. Ten songs in duration, Harry Styles covers a full spectrum of climatic, timeless ballads ('Sign of the Times'), acoustic, moody love letters ('Two Ghosts' and 'From the Dining Table'), and a whole handful of riff-ridden, screeching glam rock hooks bursting with revealing punk rock tidbits ("I think she said 'I'm having your baby / it's none of your business'"
Styles' young Jagger complex has always contained all the mannerisms, qualities and talent of a rockstar. And if the shoe fits, I don't think rappers, R&B vocalists nor boyband members shouldn't be rockstars too, each in their own right. — Words: Laura McInnes PRINCESSLOZ.WORDPRESS.COM

CHURCHILL JUNE 15 Churchill follows Britain’s iconic prime minister, Winston Churchill, in the days before the infamous D-Day landings of June 1944. As allied forces stand on the south coast of Britain, poised to invade Nazi-occupied Europe, they await Churchill’s decision on whether the invasion will actually move ahead. Fearful of repeating his mistakes from World War I on the beaches of Gallipoli, exhausted by years of war, plagued by depression and obsessed with fulfilling historical greatness, Churchill is also faced with constant criticism from his political opponents; General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery. Only the unflinching support of Churchill’s brilliant, unflappable wife Clementine can halt the prime minister’s physical and mental collapse and help lead him to greatness.
MONSIEUR CHOCOLAT JUNE 29 Omar Sy stars in the French-Language film, Monsieur Chocolat which is based on the life of Rafael Padilla — a former Cubanborn slave, who became a performer in France during the belle epoque era. After escaping slavery, he traveled to Paris and launched a career in the circus, captivating the French with his talents as a singer and dancer, and as a clown, working under the stage name Chocolat.

The genuine stories told by this cast are sure to resonate strongly, especially for the young women in the audience, and the adults in their lives. Select performances are also followed by a post-show forum — an opportunity for you to continue the conversation and engage further with the ideas from the show. Known for their authentic style and natural storytelling, Massive Company have been at the forefront of fostering young arts talent in Auckland for over quarter of a century. The contemporary theatre company focuses on listening to the thoughts and experiences of local people and developing them into powerful, ensemble based theatre that is full of vigour and heart.
The work Massive Company produce is distinctively Kiwi, downto-earth and contemporary — a winning combination that has seen their work travel both internationally — to London, Edinburgh, Hawaii, Kuala Lumpur, and throughout New Zealand. Their shows have been lauded by critics who love their style of theatre calling it “both hilarious and powerfully affecting” and a “clever mix of true confessions”. Massive Company opens the door to young and emerging artists, giving them time and space to flex their creative muscle through devising, performing and directing. Throughout the year, Massive Company runs free intro workshops for ages 1425, and run the Massive Nui Ensemble; a committed group of emerging artists who train and perform together — the cast of have all come through this ensemble. Honest, raw and told through the eyes on the next generation of women, Chance To Ignite is not to be missed! Chance To Ignite plays at Q Theatre Loft from 25-29 July. Tickets from qtheatre.co.nz

from the Hawke's Bay region, you can even take home a bottle. The restaurant is art-deco themed, with both indoor and outdoor setting for 150 people, and is home to some of the best culinary creations in the South Pacific.
Located on the outskirts of Tauranga is the Trinity Wharf Tauranga Hotel, which stretches out over the harbour. The hotel itself is central to all Tauranga has to offer and is the perfect base for a short visit. Trinity Wharf also has a beautiful Halo Dining restaurant on the hotel's exclusive balcony with incredible views. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, or even just for a nightcap. You could almost have the perfect get away without even leaving the hotel.

9AM — RISE
As with most places in New Zealand, Tauranga has beautifully preserved historic buildings that are worth a stop if you are around the area. The Old Post Office is a local treasure, just looking at it is a complete time warp, its colouration nothing like its surroundings. It is supposedly one of the largest wooden buildings in this hemisphere. If you want to see a piece of Tauranga’s history as it was back in the early 1900s take a detour down Harrington Street.
1.30PM — SHOP
If you’re in the mood it is also worthwhile visiting the exclusive Bethlehem Jewellers and browse the exquisite custom-made New Zealand pieces. Their speciality is bespoke diamond items but being the largest workshop in the area you are bound to find something you love.
3.30PM — HIKE
An 11-minute drive away is the paradise that is Mount Maunganui. On the very edge of the Tauranga peninsula, not only is the Mount a shopping and industrial hub but it is home to a volcanic summit that provides 231m above sea level views of Tauranga and surrounds. This is a must do, though it is a steep walk, and an almost 4km round trip — an hour-and-a-half of your life you will never regret spending.
6PM — EAT
To reward yourself for your small hike, visit the Mills Reef Winery & Restaurant. Since 1989, the Preston family have been producing Mills Reef wines, some of the highest class produce
Post-dinner, the Tauranga Musical Theatre is a great place to unwind and enjoy some of New Zealand’s best local talent on stage. The musical community in Tauranga has been around since 1932 and have since moved to a bigger more extravagant building, producing close to 70 shows within their small town. Their current instalments include Rock of Ages and Mary Poppins, sure to suit both a couple or a family. Start your day right by visiting the Elizabeth Café and Larder for good food and surroundings. Elizabeth Café has been around since 2012 and is themed around the Queen herself, which pop culture paintings dressing the walls and has won awards for food quality and the hearts of locals. Go and see the Queen if you are a hungry loyal subject.
10AM — VISIT
The Tauranga Art Gallery was the first public art gallery established in the Bay of Plenty and is home to a broad range of art. The gallery has hosted some of the world’s most prestigious art including the likes of Banksy, but is also responsible for local arts projects too which gives you a taste of culture from both near and far. TAG, opened in 2007, is located in the heart of the CBD but has a contemporary design that helps it stick out like nothing else in the city. The architectural feats are just as admirable as the works of art themselves. Entry to the gallery is free, which means that maybe one visit is never quite enough.
11.30AM — SHOP
If you only visit one store in the area it must be Sister & Co. A luxury department store with beauty, homeware, clothes, shoes and most importantly world renowned brands. Sister & Co is a small-town Smith & Caughey’s, but possibly better, stocking everything from Alexander Wang to Deadly Ponies. The premise of the store is bringing all the brands that are spread out both nationally or internationally together into one hub. __ Words: Laura Reid

SPECTACULAR SABI SABI
// Jun 2017
There are never-ending surprises in the African bush. You never know what you are going to see, hear, smell, and that is the thrill of it! I have travelled to Africa many times, yet each dawn of a new day, each sighting of a new animal, and each setting of the glorious African sun is awe-inspiring. Whether you're a wide-eyed first-timer or a frequent visitor, Africa will not fail to get under your skin! Last month I visited one of the most famed private game reserves on the continent, Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve within the Kruger National Park and, WOW! This 65,000-hectare reserve is home to myriad wildlife and I was able to tick off all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) with ease, as well as many other species including giraffe, hyena, springbok, kudu, impala and more. There are four luxury private safari lodges within the reserve, all with distinct character and atmosphere. Selati Lodge is reminiscent of ‘yesteryear’, complete with antiques from colonial times, whereas Bush Lodge and Little Bush Lodge have a ‘today’ feel with contemporary African design, and Earth Lodge is the zen-like lodge of ‘tomorrow’. The lodges all offer thrilling morning and evening safaris when the wildlife is most active. During one such safari our tracker Moses found leopard tracks — enough to make your heart race! Sure enough, as we drove deeper into the bush we came across the leopard. She made a low, sawing noise and our guide Joe explained she was calling for her cub. Not

having much luck, she decided she needed a higher vantage point and leapt up a tree, had a stretch and then lay down on a branch. The cameras went wild as she posed up a storm! On another game drive, vultures were circling above us, such an ominous feeling! As we were driving along I spotted what I thought was an unusual coloured rock in the long grass. On closer inspection, it was actually a dead impala on the ground, belly up. We wondered why it had just been left there, untouched. Turned out we had interrupted a leopard’s dinner. Standing just five metres behind us, she ambled up to the impala — bigger than her — and dragged it to the cover of a thicket nearby. It took her three attempts as she had to have a breather during the process, but it was an absolutely incredible to be present and witness this natural part of life in the animal kingdom. After thrilling safaris, it was always a delight to return to the lodge for some of the most incomparable dining experiences you can imagine! Perhaps a candlelit dinner served out in the bush, an alfresco meal under the stars next to a waterhole, or even a romantic dinner in the privacy of your suite — dinners at Sabi Sabi are always memorable! Simply spectacular, Sabi Sabi and the African bush are waiting to take you on the adventure of a lifetime. __ Words: Ange Pirie, World Journeys

Thanks to my wonderful family sending myself and my fiancée to Norfolk Island this month, we came home relaxed and filled with admiration toward this beautiful island paradise in the South Pacific. Norfolk Island is only about 1hr 45 mins flying time from Auckland, which makes it one of the most accessible subtropical islands in the Pacific for New Zealanders to visit. It is 5kms by 8kms in size, making it small compared to some of its other larger neighbouring islands, but it is large in hospitality, history and scenery. When people speak of ‘island time’, you truly begin to realise its meaning when you visit Norfolk Island. People are in no hurry, it is a steady pace and a relaxed friendly attitude that will became infectious from the moment you step off the plane. What seems like an hour in our busy lives in Auckland will be 10 minutes there. Norfolk Islanders are some of the warmest, most welcoming people we have come across in our travels; experts in making one feel like a local and will oblige in any way possible to ensure you enjoy your stay. Most Norfolk Islanders are direct descendants from the Bounty mutineers, so their cultural heritage is very important and extremely fascinating. One-third Norfolk Islanders, one-third Australian, and one-third New Zealanders make up the population of approximately 1,600. The island is a territory of Australia, but with its own self-governing laws. It is tax-free, so shopping is quite good (especially cosmetics, jewellery, perfumes and the Liquor Bond) with more than 70 shops in the township of Burnt Pine selling everything from art supplies to Italian shoes. Jewellery is in abundance on Norfolk Island and you will find yourself spoilt for choice, from casual jewellery to glistening diamonds — there are thousands of gems to dazzle you and all are very reasonably priced. Hand-crafted pieces and private viewings are also part of many of the services. A highlight for us was the food; eating out has never been so enjoyable. We found ourselves trying several places ranging from wood oven-cooked pizzas to luxury three-course candlelit dinners with wine and all finished with gorgeous coffee. Our favourite was Café Tropicana. The owner is Cliff, a fellow New Zealander from Auckland who fell in love with Norfolk and set up business there. He serves delicious meals presented in awardwinning style that tastes more divine than you could imagine. He is also, like all locals, extremely friendly and helpful. Everywhere you go, people will start up a conversation and pull out a map of the island advising you of many of the great places to go and see. You will also notice that the same friendliness is shown when driving; everyone waves with their index finger pointed from the steering wheel. By the end of your stay you could well be on a first-name basis with most people, making it a hard place to leave!

Let’s not forget those famous trees. The Norfolk pines are everywhere, along with some of the tallest tree ferns in the world and abundant kentias, with tropical blooms of hibiscus, frangipani and other delightful scents.
An island of contrast is the best way to describe this island paradise. Rugged coastlines and pristine golden beaches; lush forests and sapphire blue waters, historical buildings and modern shops — incorporating everything from traditional to new, you will find it all on Norfolk. It is not just a place for the ‘newly wed or nearly dead’, but I feel so many people still think that. We both fell in love with Norfolk and have vowed to return.

There are many places to stop and visit around the island including Emily Bay with its golden sandy beach, the national park and Captain Cook Memorial overlooking the cliffs, Kingston and Quality Row with its history of prison settlements (we loved Kingston). For culture vultures, there’s a plethora of museums, sweets (for handmade chocolates), botanical gardens, an old whaling station, waterfalls, Mt. Pitt and Mt Bates, as well as numerous group shows and dinners. You’ll also come away with a wealth of knowledge regarding the history of this island, not to mention ghost stories. We visited Kingston at night after everyone else had deserted it, to get the true feeling of the area and take some interesting photos — we even had the obligatory stormy winds to set the mood!
These are many great places to stay while you enjoy your time on Norfolk. We stayed at the Governor’s Lodge Resort, a 4.5star resort with 55 stand-alone cottages on 12 acres of gorgeous landscaped gardens. We were provided with a rental car and complimentary full buffet breakfast daily, along with exceptional service from the staff. The pool is definitely the place to lounge around on warm days, or enjoy the large spa right next to it — heated all year round. At night, you can hear the ocean roar as you sit on your private deck surrounded by lush plants and colourful parrots with wine in hand. The next day you can spoil yourself with a massage at a few of the spas dotted around Burnt Pine or go horseback riding and take in the same spectacular sights from the high cliffs. Or if you prefer the water, then a glassbottom boat ride, snorkel, scuba dive or surfing at Emily Bay (which is protected by a reef and perfectly safe for swimming) might be just the way to spend your day before heading to the liqueur distillery for a tasting. There are also bushwalks, mountain bike riding, a great golf course, tennis and squash courts, lawn bowls, archery, clay and pistol shooting, mini golf, volleyball and skateboarding facilities.
JOURNEYS
The local supermarket has everything you need, but groceries are dearer than at home — milk is more than $5 a litre — due to the fact that it’s imported. Cows have a pretty good life on the island, roaming freely with just a few cattlegrids around the island keeping them out of the main shopping areas of Burnt Pine and Kingston. Farmers register the cattle at $50 a head for them to roam freely and cattle have right-of-way, so watch out as you will be fined $200 for hitting the animal. Rental cars on the island are definitely a requirement, and you can get around on all of the roads (50km/hr speed limit and 40km/hr in the township) easily, hiring a car for around $27 for two days plus which makes touring very affordable. You will find most motels will give you a complimentary car, so all you need to pay is $10 a day for insurance.

An inviting couch occupies one corner of the living and dining room. The floor tiles are original fixtures, while the interior walls have been plastered but left unpainted, giving them a unique look that works beautifully with the other natural textures, which are brought in via the furniture and decor. The tinframed mirrors, couch, rattan coffee table, side table, wooden stool, brass table lamp, throws and cushions are all by Tine K Home (tinekhome.com).
A palette of natural tones creates a neutral backdrop against which the black and white patterned crockery has a graphic boldness. The crockery, like the antique brass tray, the charcoal linen napkin and the tea glasses, is by Tine K Home (tinekhome.com).

A glass-fronted white wooden cabinet (the twin of the one used for storage and display in the living and dining area) contains bed linen and baskets, all of which — like the bamboo ladder, the wooden stool and the textiles on the bed itself — is by Tine K Home (tinekhome.com). 02 — The compact bathroom is situated behind the kitchen; sliding doors off the main bedroom and large children’s bedroom allow access to it from two sides. The basin is made of black stone and is beautifully complemented by the sculptural wall-mounted metal lamp, which is also by Tine K Home. 03 — In the guest bedroom, clothing storage takes the form of a simple bamboo ‘wardrobe’, which, like the textured throws, basket and round palm-leaf mat, is by Tine K Home (tinekhome.com).

FABRIC OF ONEHUNGA
HOW TO AIRBNB WITH EASY AIRBNB
Fabric of Onehunga is a new pocket neighbourhood being developed in the heart of Onehunga where architecture meets nature, urban meets industrial and old meets new.
The media has made much of the Lions Tour and the demand for accommodation it has created. This has led to many Aucklanders exploring Airbnb for the first time. Airbnb is an online service that allows people to rent out their home short term, for example, while they’re on holiday. Homeowners benefit by earning extra income and guests benefit by getting to stay in often larger and better equipped accommodation.
The first and second building releases of the sought after development have been immensely popular with first home buyers, Onehunga locals and those transitioning from larger homes. Fabric of Onehunga is being built on a 1.29ha light industrial site that spans between Spring St and Victoria St and comprises five four-storey buildings, surrounded by landscaped park like grounds. Fabric’s master planned architecture pays homage to its industrial roots with buildings wrapped in steel cladding, with black joinery and timber detailing. The complex will also feature secure basement car parking, and naturally ventilated glass atriums with pedestrian bridge structures providing private access to each apartment. Interiors will include contemporary finishes, clever storage, high ceilings, spacious layouts and maximised natural light. All apartments will flow out to balconies or large private terrace gardens and share access to the pocket park at the heart of the development. Fabric of Onehunga is registered with the New Zealand Green Building Council and is targeting a Homestar 6 Design and Build rating for efficiency and sustainability. Visit the full size two-bedroom apartment styled by Homestyle magazine open to view daily from 11am-3pm at 11 Spring St, Onehunga – fabricofonehunga.co.nz

Before you even list your home, there are three key things to consider: Give Yourself Time Demand for accommodation is driven by what’s happening in and around Auckland — sporting matches, shows, exhibitions, concerts and festivals, for example. People travelling to these events generally book their accommodation well in advance so you need to list your home with plenty of time before it’s available. The further out you can list, the better chance you have of someone wanting to rent it. Now’s the time to be thinking about Christmas and summer. Get Your Home Ready There’s a bit of preparation required to get your home ready, both before you list and before your guests arrive. Good photos are key to standing out from the crowd, so you need things looking open-home ready when you take these. Clear out the clutter, make sure everything is neat and tidy and make the beds with military precision. A little styling effort goes a long way. Before guests arrive, your home needs to be spotless and you should remove or lock away any items that are personal or valuable. If don’t want a guest to use it, don’t leave it out. Price It Right As you’d expect location, the number of bedrooms and the other amenities of your home all impact what someone is willing to pay for it. While you can put any price you like on Airbnb, there’s no guarantee someone will pay it. The secret is to use the real-time pricing data Airbnb provides to set a realistic price. After all, you’re not earning anything until someone has booked your home. Maria Eichmann runs Easy Airbnb, a property management service that looks after and runs your Airbnb listing. PET STORIES

ANIMAL ANNALS There are as many pets in New Zealand as there are people. According to the New Zealand Companion Animal Council, 64% of Kiwi households have pets, second only to the US on 65%, while more than half of those without a furry friend wish they had one in their lives. Cats remain our most common companion (44%), with dogs occupying 28% of our homes. Though just one in ten Kiwi household have fish, those that do own an average of nine, putting the country’s population at 1.5 million. The remainder comprises mainly birds, guinea pigs, rabbits and horses. In 2009, archaeologists revealed findings that horse were domesticated around 3,500BC, pushing back initial estimates a thousand years, but it was of course, the loyal dog, evolved from wolves, that was the first animal to be domesticated — and also kept as a pet — though there is uncertainty when this first happened (estimates range from 13,000 to 30,000 years) used for hunting, guarding and, later, herding. Skeletons show that they were also domesticated all over the world by unconnected communities and often revered, buried alongside humans or with valuable items in their graves. (Now Nepal’s Kukur Tihar festival celebrates our canine friends, honouring them with food and garlands, as a well applying a dot of vermillion to their heads as a blessing.) For centuries, whether it be Egyptian pharaohs, Chinese Emperors are European aristocracy, animals were mainly only kept by the wealthy, and it wasn’t until the Victorian times that pet keeping became relatively common among the masses.
“During the Middle Ages,” writes Margo DeMello in Animals and Society: An Introduction to Human-animal Studies, “even though many nuns and monks kept pets, the Catholic Church saw the practice of pet-keeping as a form of heresy, in that it challenged the human-animal boundary.” The Vatican’s attitude is somewhat different nowadays — in 2014 Pope Francis announced “we will see our animals again in the eternity of Christ” — while on a more practical (and realistic) level, scientists have proven a wealth of mental and physical health benefits to keeping furry friends. Studies have shown childhood exposure to cats and dogs can reduce children’s likelihood of suffering some allergic reactions later in life, and perhaps even protect against asthma. A paper published by the Journal of Pediatrics in 2011 found the rate of eczema was lower in kids who lived with a family dog — even for children already sensitive to allergens. Other studies have linked companion animals with enhancements in general immune function with children — as well as better fitness and a decrease in obesity (same for adults, too). Ingrid Collins, consultant psychologist at the London Medical Centre says “a pet is better than Prozac”. Dogs have shown to reduce the stress children experience with visiting doctors, while reducing pain in a comparable fashion to the use of oral acetaminophen, with and without codeine, in adults. Surveys in Europe and Australia have shown that pet owners us less
medication overall, and visit the doctor 15% less than their nonpet owning countryfolk. Studies have also yielded a plethora of positives from people taking pooches into the office, including stress reduction, increased creativity, productivity and morale. A campaign run by the UK’s Kennel Club discovered that it also decreased absenteeism and even fostered healthier relationships in the workplace. __ Jamie Christian Desplaces
NZ PET STATS & DEMOGRAPHICS • Wellingtonians are least likely to have pets (56%), with ownership rates highest in Christchurch (72%) and rural areas (78%). • Maori make up the most significant proportion of pet owners (68% of households), with Asians least likely to choose an animal companion — though the most likely to own fish. • Our most popular breed of dog — as in many countries — is the Labrador, followed by the German shepherd then Staffordshire bull terrier. The French bulldog is rapidly gaining popularity (it was actually bred by the British).
WORKING DOGS As if these animals weren’t cool enough already… Dogs’ legendary sense of smell has can be harnessed to detect cancers by recognising unusual odours from our sweat, breath, blood, and urine. Pooches can also alert their diabetic owners of low or high blood sugar levels before they’re even aware of it themselves. According to the British Medical Journal, more than one-third of dogs have displayed behavioural changes, with some even nudging their masters into eating. Similarly, some dogs have been trained to alert of impending seizures through sensing subtle changes in body language. Service dogs are trained to help those with a range of disabilities such as those with sight or hearing difficulties, post-traumatic stress disorder, and autism — offering both physical and mental support. For some people, even those most miniscule traces of peanut in the air can be life threatening — take a bow our super-sniffing four-legged friends who can hone in on a forgotten candy bar left in the bottom of a lunch bag.

CENTRAL BARK Conveniently positioned at 99 St Georges Bay Rd., Parnell, purpose-built Central Bark is the first doggie day care and pet hotel in the area— taking in both dogs and cats. The sprawling, state-of-the-art facility includes five indoor dog parks, bespoke play equipment, and specially-designed cleaning system, all to ensure pooches and pussycats are pampered to the max! Our passionate, experienced team includes a vet nurse, animal trainer and behavioural specialist who aim to raise the pet-care bar in New Zealand. Our doggie day care, grooming salon, and pet retail space, packed with top quality treats, launches in July, with the fivestar pet hotel — comprising plush cat condos and luxurious dog suites — hot on its heels. How will the dogs be assigned to their spaces? Each is immediately assessed on temperament, sociability, size and energy levels and grouped accordingly. Some dogs might ‘graduate’ from our ‘Mid-Town’ area to the ‘Big Apple’, as they learn more social skills. We plan to operate a ‘Cruisers Club’ for older and more chilled pets, and a ‘Puppy Club’ with positive play and rests for the young ones. All staff are trained using science-based positive reinforcement methods, free of fear, force or pain. They are also trained in low-
stress handling and feline behaviour. Dogs will be monitored always by at least one carer. Tell us about your day-care staff? Our hand-picked team are confident animal handlers with passion and sound experience, in many cases backed by qualifications. General manager and co-owner, Maggie Butler, has lifelong experience with animals, including several years of pet therapy, breeding, training and showing. She has attended several animal behaviour and training courses. Day-care manager Lauren Kerr takes charge of the team — she’s a vet nurse with an animal welfare degree and more than a decade’s experience in the industry. Senior pet stylist Masami Bell heads the grooming salon, also with more than 10 years’ experience, and just down the road is Megan and her wonderful team at the Strand Veterinarian. Describe a typical doggie day care day. The dogs arrive between 7am - 9am, full of energy, so lots of supervised positive play is required! From 9am-11.30am more play and toy time is accompanied by photos so that mum and dad can see them on social media when they take their lunch

Pet beds not only provide your pooch with a secure, somewhat confined personal space (important to them due to their den-loving wolf ancestry), but prevent them from developing sores from hard surfaces, while providing support for their bodies, reducing strain and pressure on their joints.

THE HOARDER When it comes to money personalities, the Hoarder can be spotted a mile away. They are tight, can live small, don’t throw things away, and prefer to recycle rather than buy new. TV depicts Hoarders as living in squalor, but financial hoarders are different. For financial hoarders, money represents security.
__ Words: Hannah McQueen
WHICH MONEY PERSONALITY ARE YOU?
THE SHOPPER
They might still take pride in their appearance, but they do everything on the smell of an oily rag. The process of spending money is unpleasant for them and they would prefer to avoid it where they can. However, if they do buy new, they buy excellent quality to be sure it lasts. You will not catch them buying coffees or much in the way of discretionary spending unless they have a strong reason to. Some studies suggest it pains them to spend. The Hoarder is the opposite of the Shopper. If they have the right strategy they should be able to sort their financial future because their lifestyle costs so much less than the average person. That is assuming they don’t marry a Shopper.
The Shopper finds it easier to spend money than to save. They look good but are not usually going anywhere (financially speaking). Shoppers are prone to generosity and tend to spend money to make themselves feel better. They don’t have to spend big sums of money, but buying things is their version of comfort eating. They don’t have to have a credit card or be in debt, but they fritter more than most. Shoppers are not stupid. It is not that they can’t save money, it’s more that they need to have a reason to save, and in the absence of that reason then they are going to spend what they have. The trick to engaging a shopper with a financial plan is to ensure their nonnegotiable costs are catered for. We each have three or four things that we need to spend money on to be happy, otherwise we are going to feel deprived. For some it is a coffee a day, family holidays or a cleaner. For others, it might be hobbies and socialising. It is crucial that the Shopper has identified their spending pressure points and factored these into their spending plan. Austerity measures and the Shopper are not going to be compatible partners. Most importantly, a Shopper will always need a compelling goal, with a clear strategy. If effort doesn’t translate with a result, they will be off spending again.
109
Finally, the Ostrich — someone who would rather bury their head in the sand than organise their finances. It could be because money scares them, they have had no role model or they don’t have time to sort things, so they don’t bother trying. They are often paralysed by indecision. Anxiety drives their behaviour. Ostriches usually know they are in denial but it is not until the anxiety or frustration of no progress becomes too much before they take measures to fix things. The Ostrich sees making no decision as better than making the wrong decision, which fits with their psychological profile of preferring to do nothing. Unlike the Shopper who can be financially competent in their day job (most Shoppers are financially literate, but can’t be bothered to do it outside of work), the Ostrich tends to bury their head in the sand in more than one area of their life.

THE OSTRICH
We are all told that if you want to get ahead, you need to work hard. But working hard in isolation seldom translates to financial progress. Hannah and her team work with their clients to help them understand and achieve their financial capability whether they are shoppers, savers or plodders.
//
Hannah McQueen is the founder and director of enableMe — Financial Personal Trainers. Her team have worked with more than 5,000 clients and the spectrum of clients is vast. Income levels range from $40,000-$1 million per annum. Clients differ in asset levels, marital status, age and types of employment. But all want to get ahead faster and engage enableMe to help them. Hannah and her team are exposed to a diverse range of situations and in turn have to refine different methodologies to overcome obstacles and employ various strategies to exploit opportunities. The enableMe team know first-hand the havoc your psychology of spending can have on financial progress. Studies suggest genetics could account for 30% of your behaviour around money. Just as the speed of your metabolism can affect the speed of weight loss, your money personality can impact how hard making financial progress might be. Shoppers usually look good but aren’t always making progress. Being a saver, much like having a fast metabolism, should give you the “inside lane” or advantage with regards to financial inroads, but all too often the saver lacks a strategy for financial advancement and ends up no further ahead in spite of their advantage.

One of the main things Jake has taken from conducting the interviews is the concept of persistence. “Most of them have failed many times,” he says, “But they ploughed on though. They are determined. They don’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Most of them are also very nice people and are there for the right reasons. These are all key to any kind of success.” Astonishingly, Unfiltered isn’t even Jake’s first business venture. He sold his previous start-up, Oompher — a similar motivational platform with contributions from the likes of Steve Hansen, Rhys Darby and Karen Walker — to the government when he was just 19. But how did a teenager manage to secure such high-profile bookings? “When I was at Christchurch Boys’ High School, I ran a speakers programme inviting guests like Helen Clark and John Key to talk to the students. I built a relationship with those people and so by the time I launched Oompher in 2015, I could go back to them.” Jake had already met John Key a few years earlier, under tragic circumstances. In 2010, Jake’s father, Rod Millar, was killed alongside eight others when a skydiving plane went down near Fox Glacier. Key visited the crash site and Jake wrote him a letter expressing his gratitude. The teenager received a hand-written reply from the then prime minister, asking to meet, also noting, with some prescience, that Jake was a “brave young man” who “will go far”. “The prime minister came to my house for lunch, we had whitebait sandwiches and a good chat,” recalls the entrepreneur.
Such was Jake’s self-belief — and bravery — that he went on to turn down a $40,000 scholarship to read law at Otago University. “I was surprised and honoured by the offer, but I was still working things out,” Jake says. “There was this little voice in the back of my head imploring me to start a business. Conventional wisdom would probably say I should have gone to university and gone into business afterwards, but I just felt that I wanted to take that risk. I remember thinking that if I was so passionate, then it was the right thing to do. What was the worst that could happen? I could fail then go to university anyway. I just didn’t want to be left wondering.” I ask if most of those he interviews are university educated, and he says that it’s a fairly mixed bag, while many of the older CEOs of larger companies have letters after their names, changing technologies are making it ever-easier for young people to start out. “In some ways, universities are becoming less relevant,” says Jake. “But of course, it all depends what you want to do — good luck becoming a doctor or a lawyer without a degree! I think schools do a great job of instilling in students the notion that university is the be all and end all, but I don’t believe that’s necessarily true today.” Jake singles out realtor Mike Pero as an early mentor, who supported him through funding and providing office space, along with Christchurch entrepreneur Geoff Cranko: “None of this would have happened without either of them. As the business progressed, I’ve had further great advice from amazing people like Rob Fyfe and Diane Foreman, and I’m really looking forward to working with them further and learning from their global experience.” The young leader has learnt plenty about himself too. “It’s important to get comfortable with being uncomfortable,” he says. “So often we get into a bubble and it’s vital that we disrupt that if we want to develop. It’s also important that we focus on ourselves and not on what others are doing. We must stay true to ourselves. The finishing lines throughout life are always moving, so you must learn to enjoy the journey — and the key to that is to do something that arouses passion.” — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Unfiltered, which currently has around 150,000 users, aims to educate the influencers of tomorrow through compelling video interviews with legendary executives and entrepreneurs such as Sir Richard Branson and Telsa co-founder, Ian wright. “We’re trying to bring together a library of advice from the most successful people in the world to help the next generation of business leaders,” says Jake. “It’s a great resource for people to truly learn from the best, to hear how they did it. Our members may not be in the same room, but they can watch and study some of history’s greatest entrepreneurs, executives and investors.”
“It was a defining moment in my life from which I took much inspiration because he lost his father when he was seven, but still went on to achieve such amazing things. I remember thinking that if he could do it, then so could I. We formed a pretty good relationship over the years, he has been a massive support for which I am very grateful.”
//
On 1 June, Kiwi entrepreneur Jake Millar launched his barely one-yearold company, Unfiltered, in the States, having raised $1.2 million through esteemed investors such as Diane Foreman of NZ Natural ice cream fame, former Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe, and Kevin Roberts, ex-chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi. “It’s early days, but we’re making good progress in terms of our expansion,” the 21-year-old tells me over the phone from the US. “It’s certainly more crowded over here, and there are far more players producing similar content. We must build relationships in the market so that we can secure the interviews we want. We have to show what makes us different.”

Please tell us a little bit about your business. In an industry typically driven by fashion and creativity, Saba Salon is my venture aimed at bringing the salon experience back to being more client focused, with good service and advice, technical precision, and a solid dose of integrity. No smoke and mirrors, just beautiful hair that works for our clients.
Please tell us a little bit about your business. We started our label, Paris Georgia basics, alongside our online store, The Mercantile, just over two years ago now. We wanted to create something that filled the gap we found in our wardrobes. Paris Georgia basics focuses on form and fabric creating elevated wardrobe essentials that we feel every girl needs and The Mercantile is the eccentric compliment filled with vintage finds, our favorite Maryam Nassir Zadeh shoes and the primary home for our Paris Georgia basics pieces.
What do you do to keep yourselves motivated? I'm honestly lucky to have found an occupation that I love. Hairdressing has allowed me to meet some interesting and amazing people. The fact that I have the opportunity to contribute to their lives, and help them look and feel their absolute best on a daily basis, is all the motivation I need. What do you love about being an entrepreneur? Starting this business has given me the confidence to know that I can stand on my own two feet and has opened my mind up to a whole new world of possibilities. The learning curve has been steep but as a result, the personal growth has been staggering too. What is unique about your business? Integrity is paramount to us. Hair can have such a significant impact on how people feel about themselves and it's not something you can glue back on. As such, we place a huge importance on making sure everything we do is in the best interests of our clients and their hair. If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? Here's two. You don't know unless you try, and surround yourself with successful and supportive people. How do you chill? Going for a surf, motorcycle ride, or listening to music with a glass of wine and mooching with my partner Rose, and cat Gypsy.
What do you do to keep yourselves motivated? Staying in tune with what’s happening abroad is so crucial and motivating. It reminds you that there’s a big world out there filled with lots of talent and that you can never get too comfortable. What do you love about being an entrepreneur? So many things! Being your boss, creating your own schedule, choosing your team and most importantly doing what you are most passionate about everyday. What’s been the biggest challenge for you on your entrepreneurial journey so far? Finding the perfect team that is both great to work with and good at their jobs. The design process involves a lot of out sourcing, which is scary as essentially you are putting elements out of your control. It’s all about finding your perfect team, it makes the world of difference and after two years we finally have. If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? Just go for it. It’s so easy to sit back and think about ideas but if you’re truly passionate, it’s definitely worth just giving it a go. It may change your life in the best of ways! How do you chill? In summer it’s at the beach, and in winter it’s at home in a cozy house with good music, movies and food.

We offer several senior hair stylists, a beauty and makeup specialist, and a nutritionist, not only for your convenience, but because we believe you feel best when you develop a beauty regime that is in harmony with your way of living. Our privilege is guiding the conversation to provide you with insights into the latest innovations in natural, potent skincare, treatment makeup, and supportive hair and wellness expertise.
What do you do to keep yourself motivated? Just doing what I love keeps me motivated, I don't really call this work to be honest.
What do you do to keep yourselves motivated? My motivation is to show the ones who believed in me that they had something to believe in. My parents have been absolutely amazing and my dad believed in me from the very beginning. I met my partner in the process of planning Society and his support has been unreal. This along with my loyal clientele and amazing team, it makes it so easy to jump out of bed in the morning and smash each and every day! Do you have any entrepreneurial role models or mentors? My beautiful friend Donielle Brooke, the founder of Designer Wardrobe. I grew up with her and witnessed her turn something extremely hard into something truly magical. She will forever be an inspiration. What is unique about your business? I have created a hub where everyone works for themselves. I have given amazing stylists the courage and opportunity for them to do this. The atmosphere is amazing and we are an incredible team! If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? To just go for it! A lot of small goals is much more powerful than a big dream. Have a little goal to tick off each week rather than get overwhelmed at the bigger picture. I never thought my little goals would even come close to how big and beautiful Society has already become.
What do you love about being an entrepreneur? I love the fact that you can tell your story within your business your own way. There's no guidelines so you can do what you think feels right. What's been the biggest challenge for you on your entrepreneur journey? Selling goods online, I suck at computers, but we are slowly getting there! What is unique about your business? The items we sell, every item in store is a one of one — I personally pick every item before it is sent over to us. What are your responsibilities as a business owner? Pretty much making sure the customers are getting what they want. I'm in charge of the buying (vintage) and brand production and I'm lucky to have my team who are great at selling. If you had one piece of advise for someone just starting out what would it be? You've got to love what you do, then everything will fall in place. How do you chill? Taking my family out for yum cha.

PISCES
23 July – 22 August
19 February – 20 March
You tend to want to set your own pace and goals, and you thrive on the small challenges you create for yourself now. You have an easier time putting something behind you now. The second half of the month in personal relationships will have more smooth and steady flow - there will be peace in the family and spousal relationships will witness the long-awaited passion and romance.
This month finds you seeking out predictability, comfort, and security. for money matters. A good idea can blossom now. You are capable of quite a bit of work if you can foresee an improved financial position or a more secure state of being. This period could also stir up old financial or relationship problems. The tendency now is to react quickly, but you might want to get in touch with your heart’s desire before taking action.
VIRGO ARIES
23 August – 22 September
Ownership, sharing, power, and money matters can be at the root of challenges or the need to make changes becomes evident. You need to accept that change is inevitable and understand that being proactive about it is in your best interests. There can also be bigger emotions felt at home than elsewhere – tempers may be prominent. The trick is to avoid impatience and impulsiveness.
LIBRA 23 September – 22 October
Romance and travel are favored in June, although both are better after mid-month. Your romantic life continues to stimulate and challenge you, and although part of you might long for a more settled and stable situation, it’s never dull. The month will be more loyal, have a smooth flow, and most miraculously smooth out any roughness in a relationship and extinguishes any conflict.
SCORPIO
21 March – 19 April
CANCER 21 June - 22 July
Your appeal is high, and people thoroughly enjoy your art, craft, or ideas. It’s a natural time for you to reflect and move a little more slowly than usual. This allows you to catch up emotionally with recent events and circumstances. There can be a tendency for you or a partner to be touchy or for arguments to emerge seemingly out of nowhere.
TAURUS 20 April - 20 May
You’re at your best when you work with someone towards a common goal. The best way to use this energy to your advantage is to allow others to inspire and motivate you. Team up and take action so that excess energy is turned outwards. Sharing your feelings or intimate matters can be fun and rewarding. This is a time of love, family travels and joint holiday with loved ones.
CAPRICORN 22 December – 19 January
It’s a time for seeing yourself better through relationships with others and the world as a whole. Changes of plans can lead to new discoveries, perspectives, and insight that truly improve your life, so don’t dig in your heels too much. This is also a time when you’re not particularly content with simply dreaming, wishing, and hoping for better circumstances.
You’re likely to feel in an exceptionally generous and possibly philosophical mood. This is an opportunity period for finances, gifts, bonuses, family relationships, recognition for your work or natural talents, and stellar money-making or project ideas with long-term appeal and profitability. This is a beautiful time for learning or expanding a project, as well as activities related to promotion, publishing, education, communications, the law, and travel.
SAGITTARIUS
20 January – 18 February
23 October – 21 November
You may want to rule the roost now, and this can be successful as long as you’re a gentle leader. You’ll do best if you pursue your goals in a structured or organised manner. You are finding new ways to get along with others, and people are valuing your services. This is a good time to get your feelings out into the open.
GEMINI 21 May – 20 June
A major focus this month is your relationships, companionability, and intimacy. Even so, it’s one of your more ambitious months of the year. You often fare better when the focus is on your projects, loved ones, and work. There is also a pleasant feeling of moving forward, slowly but surely, this month. You are likely to end this month with a renewed feeling of confidence in your career direction.
AQUARIUS 22 November - 21 December
This month points to a more private period for your love life or affections. It can also point to benefits to working behind the scenes or special enjoyment of solitude and periods for extra rest and healing. The last week of the month finds you seeking out predictability, comfort and security, launching one of the best periods of the year for money matters.
Your ambitions are stimulated. While you have a strong sense of the rules, you are at your best when employing strategies. Negotiations should go very well. You might benefit from keeping someone’s confidence or you may receive recognition for work you’ve done in the past. Healing activities are in focus. New ideas flow well. This can also be an almost magical time for financial and business matters.

THE RELUCTANT LANDLORD You marketed your home for sale and it didn’t get a buyer at your price but you want to move on! Property sales in Auckland are appearing to slow down and we are seeing frustrated vendors turning to the rental market when their property does not sell for the expected price. Many of these property owners are frustrated and disappointed, having gone through the sales process and the effort required of them both physically and emotionally. Often they have moved on in their minds from owning the property and are having to rethink what to do. They may already have purchased another property and visualise being there. Can you fully embrace a new way of thinking entirely from home owner to investor treating the property like a business? Is this you? Why not rent out your property either long term or until the market supports a good sale? Perhaps you have decided to go ahead. The time to dot the i’s and cross the t’s is right at the start of your phase as a landlord. Our professional experience and expertise in residential rental property is critical to making sure you get things right.

WELCOME TO RUDY'S TIPS 'N TRICKS I am often asked about the best way to dispose of old computers. There are recycling places that take most electronics, and I use these myself for very old and faulty computers. I always remove the hard disk so no personal or company data could fall into the wrong hands. The hard drives I physically destroy. Any laptop or PC that is still reasonably new and capable of being reused, I reload with Windows after thoroughly overwriting the hard drive. I send these to some organisations that assist people with limited budgets to learn computer skills. They learn how to prepare a CV and get general skills on computers to assist them with finding work. If you have any unwanted but serviceable (usually five years old or younger) laptops or PCs I would be pleased to forward them on to these reputable organisations.
smartphone. I don’t know all the details yet but one of my clients has lost in excess of $90,000 to someone claiming they were from Spark. If you get a call from someone claiming to be from Spark, Chorus or a bank, ask for the job reference number. If they give you a number, hang up. Call Spark and confirm the number is correct and relates to you. No reference number or incorrect then it’s a scam. More details to follow when I have them. At Rudy’s PC Services we can help you set up the best solution for your needs. Call us about anything regarding your computer and we will be glad to advise you and fulfil your requirements. “My parents had wonderful retirement years and enjoyed a lifestyle that is very similar to what is now available at Ranfurly Village” Judy Bailey
Our ninth Budget shows continuing improvement in the government’s books and solid economic growth expected to average around 3% over the next five years. This is delivering more jobs and higher wages for New Zealanders. The average annual wage is expected to reach $64,300 by 2021 — up more than $17,000 since we came into office. Well over 200,000 jobs have been created in the last three years and a further 215,000 jobs are expected over the next four years. As science and innovation minister I was particularly pleased to see the $372 million Innovative New Zealand programme, which invests in the skills and innovation that will keep our economy growing in the years ahead. A $2 billion a year Family Incomes Package will help hard working New Zealanders get ahead by adjusting income tax thresholds, while also increasing Working for Families and providing additional support for people on low incomes with high accommodation costs. The package will lift the incomes of 1.3 million families by an average of $26 a week. It is expected to lift 20,000 families above the threshold for severe housing stress, and reduce the number of children living in families receiving less than half the median income by around 50,000. Budget 2017 invests $4 billion to help build the public infrastructure we need to support our growing economy, as well as additional funding to strengthen the Business Growth Agenda which will help drive further economic growth, create jobs and lift wages. As part of the $7 billion new investment in public services like health, education, and law and order over the next four years, Budget 2017 includes $321 million in social investment initiatives to help the most at-risk New Zealanders become more independent.

SMOKE ALARMS AS SO ESSENTIAL BUSINESS / EDUCATION & SOCIETY //
I have had an experience of how important smoke alarms are. Last month we had the fire brigade phone us at 8.30pm. They were outside one of our management properties as a 111 call had been made by the neighbour — she had gone nextdoor to investigate the shrill coming from the alarm, and knew that the tenant was not home. Fortunately we had such an observant neighbour because when she looks in the kitchen window all she could see was smoke up to the ceiling! The fire officer had phoned because they couldn’t get in but by the time we arrived they had climbed in a window and opened all windows and doors to let the smoke out and to get to the source! How did this happen? The tenants had put away the toaster and kettle into the bench cupboard and had pulled down the sliding front door but unfortunately the toaster's lever was sticking out and the door was sitting on top of it pressing it down and as the toaster was plugged in and switched on — it kept on heating up. The plastic outer of the toaster melted, as did the kettle. The cupboard and sliding door was damaged by the heat and both were only minutes away from bursting into flames. If it was not for the neighbour being alerted by the sound of the SMOKE ALARM it would have been disastourous — the house would have gone up in flames and probably next door as well. The tenant had not planned to come home that night. The two factors that saved this from becoming a disaster was the vigilance of the neighbour and the sound of the SMOKE ALARM. We had to clean ceilings, walls and carpet and the cupboard and door will have to be replaced, but we were lucky. Landlords and tenants, check the SMOKE ALARMS — they do save lives and property. Tenants make sure you have contents insurance — this could so easily happen to you. Regards Sylvia
