It’s About Time

Guest Editor’s Note

By the time you read this, I’ll likely be married. I may even be in the process of getting married at this very moment! Our wedding was supposed to have happened a couple of years back, but, well, you know, covid and all that. A few months ago, we also welcomed our first baby, our son, Leo, into the world.

I bought a pocket watch for the wedding, a humble heirloom for my boy. On one side, I choose to have the wedding date etched towards the top, leaving space beneath for Leo to one day add the date of his wedding, and later, for his kids, and their kids too. On the other, a message from his old man.

You can imagine my fury when I got back to the car and noticed a typo on the timepiece.

The engraver was understandably mortified. We rifled through his collection of watches to see if he could find a replacement cover, but to no avail.

He agreed to pay for a replacement pocket watch, but there was no way a new one would arrive in time. In the meantime, the best he could do was mask the mistake with a simple heart. And he was so upset that he said he’d have to ask a colleague to engrave the new watch once it came.

Having cooled off and mulled things over on the way home, I sent him a message telling him not to worry, and that I’d stick with the watch he’d engraved. It wouldn’t be the same to get a new one, to give my boy a different watch to the one I’d had on my wedding day. Maybe it was a metaphor, I figured – for love, for life, for parenthood, for marriage. Some things – like time itself – we’re eternally at the mercy of, while everything else can likely be resolved with acceptance, understanding, and a little heart.

Enjoy the issue, Jamie

In Short

Seven Heavens

It’s official – at least according to travel experts at StressFreeCarRental.com – the world’s seven most romantic destinations have been named, with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure. While the likes of Venice in Italy, Spain’s Seville and Nice on the French Riviera are clear shoo-ins thanks to their historic architecture, sophisticated dining scenes and jaw-dropping sights, less obvious might be the Big Apple or the Scottish island of Skye. “Each couple has a different idea of what the perfect romantic spot is for them,” says CEO, John Charnock. “The Isle of Skye in Scotland offers gorgeous landscapes in a remote setting whereas the bustle of New York city is ideal for couples looking for a jam-packed itinerary.” Shoring up the remainder of the list are the rugged glacial and volcanic landscapes of Iceland, and Australia’s Hamilton Island, famed for its tropical waters, coral, and proximity to Heart Reef.

Influencing Our Reality

Boasting over 400,000 Instagram followers and represented by the world-renowned modelling agency, IMG Models, Noonoouri is a bona fide influencer. And like all good influencers, not only is she a part of global fashion campaign, promoting brands such as Versace, Dior, and Alexander McQueen, but uses her voice to promote crueltyfree lifestyles and raise awareness around issues such as HIV and Aids. “I admire women who use their fame to help others,” Noonoouri tells Vogue . She also describes herself as “between urban and luxury” and a “quality-driven girl”, but what really sets Noonoouri apart from her peers is the fact that she’s not real! Among the latest AI iterations, the “virtual influencer” is described by The Daily Beast as “an imaginary friend come to digital life”. “Virtual influencers allow brands to tailor-make the perfect spokesperson that will never age, ask for more money, or misbehave,” says Eric Dahan, CEO of influencer marketing firm Open Influence, though, thankfully, he does admit that there’s “no substitute for the authenticity of an actual person”.

To Infinity, and Beyond

According to Stanford-trained physician Dr Petta Attia, we already know how to add decades to our existence, and it couldn’t be simpler: move more. In his New York Times bestselling book, Outlive , Attia writes: “The data are ambiguous: exercise not only delays actual death, but also prevents both cognitive and physical decline, better than any other intervention.” He says that transitioning from a sedentary lifestyle to doing three house of exercise per week can reduce mortality by as much as 50%. And to function as a fit 60-year-old at the age of 80 means breaking down our workouts into four parts: strength, to maintain muscle mass; stability, which focuses on core muscles and breathing; aerobic efficiency, which will also aid cognitive function; and peak aerobic capacity to maximise our rate of utilising oxygen. It’s not about living forever, he adds, but “a quest for a better life”.

Take It Like a Man?

The male pill has been in development since not long after the women’s pill became available, but progress has obviously been far slower. Part of the reason for this is simple biology: while women usually produce a single egg per month, men can produce hundreds of millions of sperm daily. (Though, some argue the main problem is double standards!) However, the good news is that a pill developed by Washington State University is rumoured to likely be ready in five years and works by disabling a gene crucial for sperm production. The bad news is that some don’t trust men to take it! But such worries, in New Zealand at least, may be unfounded. Studies have shown high numbers of men keen to take contraceptive matters into their own hands, while vasectomy rates in Aotearoa are among the highest in the world (though admittedly, that’s from a study over 20 years old that only included Pākehā.)

When Recline’s a Crime

Aeroplane etiquette is almost as important as table manners when you live in one of the world’s most isolated nations, but the dos and don’ts aren’t so clear. It’s generally agreed that the poor soul in the middle seat gets dibs on both armrests, but rules around reclining are debated. While some only recline on long haul flights, others think nothing of kicking back almost straight from take off even on short hops. "Airline seats are designed to recline so it's completely reasonable that passengers use that feature,” insists etiquette and protocol expert Lisa Orr, while travel industry analyst, Henry Harteveldt, tells the New York Times you should only recline “when necessary”, and even then, just “a little bit to get the comfort you need without encroaching too much on the person behind you”. Most agree it’s best to abstain during short, daytime flights of two hours or less, and certainly until after the meal service. And obviously always take a glance back to check for hot drinks or laptops before kicking back into someone else’s space.

On the Pear-owl

Forgetting dating apps or singles night at the supermarket, there’s a stylish new way to let potential lovemates know that you’re single and ready to mingle: the Pear Ring. Designed to encourage actual face-to-face interactions, the small turquoise band is the product of a start-up and arrives with a unique membership number and invites to exclusive events such as the singles festival PearFest (currently only on in the UK). It has been billed as the world’s largest dating experiment and the numbers back it up with the first round of rings already nearly sold out. The “opposite of an engagement ring” costs $40, with millions of subscribers so far mostly in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, and Germany. "If 1.2 billion singles around the world wore a little green ring on their finger to show they’re single, we wouldn't need dating apps,” so goes their promo. “IRL connection is the mission." We’ll raise a glass to that!

Sanctuary Style

A mountainside hideaway in Mallorca has been refreshed and renewed via a renovation that reconnects it to the historic landscape in which it is set.

Who doesn’t dream of discovering a hidden gem – a somewhat neglected and dilapidated property that turns out to have a storied history – and transforming it into a glorious sanctuary? The owners of this Mallorquin holiday home, situated on the coastline of the Tramuntana Mountains, have done exactly this.

The arched entrance hall and vestibule space includes a stairway to the upper floor. Designed and installed by local architecture firm More Design, the

spiral staircase has been made following Fibonacci’s “golden ratio”, and has the sculptural feel of an artwork.

As per the homeowners’ brief to the architect, the key spaces in terms of size are the common areas of the house, rather than the bedrooms. Combined with the linear plan, the result is that from one end of the spacious main living spaces to the other, a series of arches and small passages creates a powerful sense of interconnectedness.

Beauty is in the Detail

The beauty is in the detail. Dubbed “the designer alternative to double glazing”, Duette® Shades cells form insulating air traps, while the fabric can reflect heat. The overall effect is to help keep a home warm in winter and cool in summer.

Duette® Shades are the premier brand of ‘honeycomb’ or ‘cellular’ shades. Their design heritage is founded on innovation for today and tomorrow, while taking care to celebrate the beauty in the details.

And right now at Lahood®, you can benefit from 15% off Luxaflex Duette® honeycomb, pleated and roller blinds, including automation.

Duette® Shades are made of two or more layers of pleated, reinforced fabrics bonded together and joined at the pleats to form compartments of trapped air.

With more than 40% of total heat loss from a home through uncovered windows, and around one-third of New Zealanders’ winter energy bills attributed to heating the home, why not gain the benefits of insulated blinds in your home this winter?

With a focus on beauty and durability, the Luxaflex Duette® fabric collection offers a range of fabrics to coordinate with today’s interiors. Lahood® has an extensive variety of colours and textures, so you have the freedom to find something that enhances your space. And in addition to their energy-efficiency properties, honeycomb blinds also help to reduce everyday sound energy. Sound energy is absorbed within the cell, dulling exterior noise by up to 55%, truly the quiet achiever.

Adding automation unlocks the ability to operate your blinds via smartphone, voice control or at the press of a button. Lahood's® preferred choice is PowerView®, providing greater convenience, energy efficiencies, security, and child safety. Sustainable Architecture

WORDS— MILLY NOLAN

Renowned for their innovative and modern designs, Smith Architects is an award-winning practice that over the last two decades has paved the way for buildings that integrate beautiful human spaces with sustainability.

One of the most poignant pieces of advice Phil Smith, founder and director of Smith Architects, was ever given, was that in order for architects to design buildings for people, they need to first understand humans. The idea being, that you need to know exactly what

humans need and want in order to design something that they will benefit from, and which will improve their lives. This notion has been the driving factor behind all of Phil’s projects ranging from refurbishments to new builds; from domestic scale to urban master plans. His experience covers a broad range of typologies – masterplans, mixed-use schemes, residential, offices, cultural, educational, healthcare, and childcare.

“When we talk about sustainability,” says Phil, “we are more focused on sustainability from a health perspective

Home & Design 28

than saving energy or reducing carbon footprints. Sure, they’re very important also, but I feel like it’s missing the point to focus only on those. What architecture should really be about is human wellbeing – the people that inhabit the buildings are the ones that should matter the most. What is best for them? If it’s good enough for a person, then it will be good for the environment also – the two go together.”

This belief inspired Phil to establish Smith Architects in 2007, with his wife Tiffany. The couple had emigrated from England the year prior in search of a more sustainable life. “At the heart of what we do is our desire to understand what makes something beautiful. If we can create beauty in our designs, we believe our creations will endure, making them truly sustainable.” says Phil.

A chartered accountant by trade, Tiffany is also passionate about understanding the influence of the built environment on our wellbeing and development – having completed a Master of Philosophy in Science, researching how well their buildings support wellbeing. Likewise, the entire team at Smith Architects are employed on the premise that they all care deeply about the human aspect of a finished design.

“There’s a lot to consider when designing a building that has the inhabitant’s best interest in mind,” says Phil. “You need to look at letting the right amount of sunlight in, as it has been scientifically proven that we all need a certain amount each day, whether on your skin or absorbed through your eyes. You also need to see a certain amount of greenery every day, along with good ventilation and insulation. A house needs to be comfortable – there’s a careful balance to get it just right. And of course, there are the materials you use.”

In 2009 Phil was appointed as a technical adviser for NZGBC, leading the team who created New Zealand’s first Green Star Education rating tool. In 2019 he became a qualified NZGBC Homestar practitioner and in 2021 he was invited to join the NZGBC Advisory Board.

With the health of the inhabitants at the forefront of Phil’s design process, it has not been by accident that he has become the leader in designing early childcare education buildings – not just here in New Zealand, but also abroad in Australia, England and Abu Dhabi. To date, Smith Architects has designed over 100 early childhood centres, winning 36 international and national awards.

His striking and innovative design for the Te Mirumiru Early Childhood Centre in Kawakawa received 11 international and national awards alone, culminating in 2014 with the World Green Building Council’s Leadership in Sustainable Design Award – the only building in the whole of the Asia Pacific region to receive such a title. Designed for a Māori iwi, the brief called for a building which would not only accommodate the children, but also teach them about their culture and customs on a daily basis while having a minimal impact on the environment.

While designing childcare centres has carved a niche for Smith Architects over the last decade, the team are also highly sought after for bespoke residential houses. “For Tiffany and I, what’s always been important is looking at evolutionary psychology – what is it that humans need? Anyone can design a building, but the thing that makes an architecturally-designed building different is that it has meaning for people. Why do we all go on holiday? Why do we flock to sunny resorts in winter? It’s these kind of questions that get me thinking. You know, why wouldn’t we want our house to feel like a resort? If we could all live in an environment like that 24/7, I’m sure we would all be a lot happier. So it’s with that kind of thought process that I design from. I want people to love where they live, play or work and be healthier for it also.”

Priceless

Annick changing the jewellery game in Ellerslie.

The Rennell family, owners and operators of Ellerslie Jewellery and Engravers, have been heavily involved in the community for years. Verve interviewed Annick Rennell about her recent return to launch her new jewellery collection, Annick, from her father’s store in Ellerslie Village.

How long have your parents owned Ellerslie Jewellers and Engravers for, and what was it like growing up working in the store?

My dad, John, has been in the jewellery trade for over 50 years, with my parents opening Ellerslie Jewellers and Engravers in 2000. I always enjoyed working here during school and uni holidays, and developed a love for jewellery, gemstones and fashion from a very early age.

What was your career overseas, and what drew you back to Ellerslie?

After exploring the fashion and interior design industries both here and abroad, I worked in television as a writer before moving to print media as a stylist and creative director – even enjoying a stint as a fashion editor for a major publication. I’ve now come back to my roots, working alongside Dad and creating my own branded jewellery range. Enamoured with the way jewellery extends our fashion choices, Annick brings my love of colour and my knowledge of the trade – passed on to me through Dad – to my jewellery collection.

Where have you found inspiration for your new collection?

The inspiration for Annick stems from my love of bold colour, design and fashion. I’m definitely a mix-not-match kind of girl and Annick certainly reflects my personal style. It’s a colourful and contemporary jewellery collection that strives to elevate our customers’ everyday jewellery look with carefully curated pieces that are elegant, versatile enough to take you from day to night, fashion-forward, and feminine. Just as we’ve embraced the entire colour spectrum in our homes and wardrobes, today’s women are looking beyond white diamonds to the kaleidoscopic world of coloured gemstones. Nature provides an infinite palette to flatter any style and skin tone!

What was the biggest challenge in launching Annick? Time. With three children and a busy role at Ellerslie Jewellers and Engravers, time – or lack thereof – has proved to be my biggest challenge.

Skin Deep

Verve sits down with Sue Hudson , skin expert and founder of Renew Skin and Body.

Sue, can you tell our readers how long you’ve been in Ellerslie with your beauty business?

I established Renew Skin and Body in 2003/04, initially doing mostly nails and spray tans. But as client demand changed over the years, we added more advanced facial and body treatments over.

Your clients come from all over Auckland – why do you think this is?

We offer a gender-neutral clinic and everyone is welcome. We customise each treatment to each client – no cookie-cutter facials or one-size-fitsall skin treatments here! Each facial is bespoke. I even have clients coming up from Hamilton and down from

Whangaparaoa each month, so I must be doing something right!

Tell us about your products?

We use Lira Clinical, a cosmeceuticals and botanical range; and Elementals, a bioactive, plant-based, vegan skincare. Each range has its place and enables us to curate a skin treatment for what you need on the day.

Do you offer a payment plan or memberships?

We offer a buy five, get one free on all facials. So, pre-pay for five facials, and you’ll get the sixth for free! We also have different promotions throughout the year, to work with the seasons and

RENEW GLOW FACIAL

what skin needs most at that time. We have Afterpay and Laybuy to spread payments over 4-6 weeks.

What’s your specialty?

Bespoke facials! I love designing a skin treatment to target a client's concerns, and blend in relaxation for a complete package! Relaxation with results. I also love skin tag removal. So many people have annoying skin tags, cherry angiomas, and solar keratosis that can be easily removed, and I just love how happy people are after the treatment.

A Haze of Hope

It’s operated by regular doctors and nurses who are experts in what they believe to be a wildly underexplored –and underestimated – medical field, and their passion is, well, intoxicating.

“I was looking for a new challenge,” says founder and CEO, Dr Waseem Alzaher. “But the first challenge was the realisation that I will always be known as the ‘cannabis doctor’. And if the industry turned to custard, or remained on the fringe, then I’d be stuck in a no-man’s land – along with my reputation!”

The doctor admits that he’d never really felt like someone who really fitted in.

“And it’s easy to just go with the flow, right?” he tells Verve in his Takapuna HQ. “But you have to have the selfawareness to step aside and ask where it’s all going.”

Similarly, Lisa Gadsby, the clinic’s business development manager , who previously ran a holistic wellness business promoting the natural powers of the plant, realised that there was potential to do more.

“I’ve travelled the country doing dozens of shows and seminars each year,” she says, “and what I’ve noticed, particularly in the last 24 months, is a huge increase in physical and mental pain in New Zealand. I felt that need for medicinal cannabis had also increased.”

Cloud of Confusion

Though entirely legal, the medical cannabis industry remains massively misunderstood. So, healthcare aside, the clinic team realises greater education is vital to remove the stigma and allow meaningful progress that they say will change lives.

WORDS—
Since opening in 2018, The Cannabis Clinic has consulted with more than 20,000 New Zealanders, including children and patients in palliative care.
Beauty & Health 48

“Elderly people, for instance, turn their noses up at even imagery of the plant,” laments Lisa. “But we, like all mammals, have an endogenous cannabinoid system – something most people haven’t heard of before. The endogenous cannabinoid system is a vital regulatory system in our bodies that helps maintain balance and homeostasis, influencing functions like mood, pain, appetite, and immune response.”

“When you explain the science behind it, it puts people at ease and lets them know that we’re all on the same page,” says Dr James Cameron, who still also practises as a GP. “This is not about getting high.”

Medicinal cannabis is an immensely divisive topic within the medical profession, though more doctors are becoming more aware of its potential.

“A lot of GPs don’t even present it as an option,” continues James. “But there's a point where you just can't ignore patients’ experiences. Even if it wasn't part of your training, even if you don't understand it, there's a point where enough people say that this works really well that you just have to accept it.”

And it often works where mainstream medications have failed.

“With disorders like fibromyalgia and endometriosis, the success stories with cannabis are just undeniable,” says Lisa. “I was at the forefront of that. At these expo shows, my store became a confessional booth where people would share their cannabis stories with me. New Zealand is a small place, and

we all know somebody who's benefited from it. That's where we're at in 2023 – I feel like everyone's curious.”

Nurse team leader – and Aotearoa’s original cannabis nurse – Maxine Anderson speaks of the drug’s successes in subduing seizures and helping with other conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, and a variety of autoimmune and neurological conditions.

“Of course, there’s a time and place for the biomedical model, but there’s so much pain and illness out there – particularly chronic ones – that I just don’t believe the medical model is equipped to address,” she says. “It's not to say that I think that medicinal cannabis is the one and only answer, but it’s an important piece of the puzzle in supporting people's internal cannabinoid system. We have a very holistic approach. It's important to address concerns from all angles and I think medicinal cannabis can be a really helpful part of that.”

A Cannabis Community

Around 10% of the clinic’s patients arrive via referrals, the rest generally find it through their own online research. “So many people have been struggling, feeling that their medicines are not helping,” says Waseem. “They wonder if there’s another option, begin investigating, and consider cannabis. We’re seeing a real shift in attitudes, an openness to plant-based, natural options.”

Common misconceptions include the belief that medicinal cannabis costs $1,000 per month (in reality, it’s closer to $300), and that symptoms must be severe to require treatment.

continues over page

49 June 2023
Medicinal cannabis is an immensely divisive topic within the medical profession, though more doctors are becoming more aware of its potential.

“You don’t have to be suffering from cancer to qualify,” says Waseem. “Most of our treatments cover things like stress and insomnia.”

The doctor describes the clinic as an “ecosystem that puts the people at the centre of what we do”. “That means that our doctors are spending up to 30 minutes per consultation to understand what’s really going on. It’s all about creating a community.”

Consultations involve investigating medical histories, including any psychiatric or mental health issues. “And then it’s standard first principles medicine,” says James. “We try to understand what the patient wants to get out of it.”

Treatments are tailored, with different combinations delivered by way of vaping or ingesting depending on the condition or how quickly the patient requires relief. The clinic most commonly treats those experiencing physical pain, anxiety, and depression, along with gastrointestinal issues and ADHD. James says that there’s exciting research being done around the treatment of acute psychosis.

“We also have the other type of patient who has been using cannabis for 30 years. So they’re at a different stage of the same journey. But the benefits of having our medical supervision is that you get a tailored plan. It’s not as simple as going home and lighting up every day. You have to understand doses, timings, and quantities. We know exactly what’s in every single flower which means we can be really systematic in finding what works and ensuring it’s the exact same thing every time.”

The follow-up care is equally important – and meticulous. “There are legal requirements which we take care of, and

every few months we check in for a chat,” says Maxine. “It’s a very high level of support throughout the whole process, and our nurses have extensive knowledge which we pass on to empower patients and help them understand what works best for them so that they can take control of their own health.”

Fast Forward

Headquartered in Takapuna, with clinics also in Wellington, Hastings, Nelson, and Christchurch – and more on the way – Waseem says his dream is not only to have centres all around the country, but to progress the industry to the point where it’s part of mainstream medicine and dispensed at local pharmacies. And that progress is happening – so fast, in fact, that the organisation needs to hire more medical professionals to keep up with demand.

“We’re healthcare professionals, and we want advice to be given from trusted authorities,” says the doctor. “All medicines have their place, but it’s unheard of for one product to be so effective for so many ailments. So, we’re here to give cannabis its place, as a legitimised, non-stigmatised treatment.”

“I think it’s also important that it’s not glamorised as some popular fad,” says Maxine. “Indigenous people have been using cannabis as medicine for centuries and I would like to see this honoured and recognised. It’s not just this magical cure that we’ve recently found. There needs to be a societal shift to ensure that it just becomes a part of how we live.”

Fountain of Youth

The power of retinol

When it comes to skincare, retinol has become an extraordinary ingredient that can aid in reducing the signs of ageing and improve overall skin health.

Derived from vitamin A, retinol stimulates collagen production, accelerates cell turnover, and diminishes fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. It also helps reduce acne breakouts and improves skin texture. Having numerous formulations (even including plant based/natural options) like retinal (retinaldehyde), retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate and retinoic acid, it’s important to note that different forms have different conversion rates on the skin and will vary in effectiveness and potential side effects. It is also good to consult with a skincare professional to help determine the best form for usage to obtain the best results. Let’s take a deep dive.

The age at which to introduce retinol into your skincare routine depends on individual factors, but it’s generally recommended for individuals in their late 20s to early 30s when collagen production starts to decline. However, low-concentration retinol products can be used earlier as a preventive measure to maintain youthful-looking skin.

When incorporating retinol into your skincare regimen, it is best to introduce it gradually. This allows the skin to adapt and minimise potential side effects such as dryness, redness, or flakiness. Start by using a low-concentration retinol product once or twice a week, gradually increasing the frequency as your skin

builds tolerance. Applying a broadspectrum sunscreen during the day is also crucial to support your skin.

Patience and consistency are key when it comes to retinol. Results may take several weeks or months to become noticeable, so it’s important to remain consistent with your retinol regimen. Start by applying a pea-sized amount of retinol product to clean, dry skin at night, and gradually increase the frequency as your skin tolerates it.

The long-term benefits of incorporating retinol into your skincare routine are remarkable. With consistent use, you can expect reduced fine lines and wrinkles, improved skin elasticity, a more even complexion, and diminished hyperpigmentation. Retinol also helps prevent future signs of ageing.

Retinol is particularly effective in treating hyperpigmentation. With consistent use, it may help in aiding to reduce the depth of dark spots and even out skin tone.

Prolonged sun exposure can cause sun damage, including fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture. Retinol is a powerful ally in reversing the effects of sun damage by stimulating collagen production, plumping the skin, and improving overall texture. It also aids in the exfoliation of damaged surface cells.

As we age, our skin loses elasticity and firmness, resulting in wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging. Retinol is a proven anti-ageing ingredient that stimulates

collagen production, restores skin elasticity and firmness, and smooths the appearance of wrinkles.

Retinol products come in various formulations to cater to different skin types and concerns. Always consult with a skincare professional to ensure you have the right formulation for your skin. That’s where the team at Louise Gray Skin Care, your Skin Experts, can help.

In conclusion, retinol is a remarkable ingredient in skincare. Its ability to reduce signs of ageing, improve skin health, and target specific concerns such as hyperpigmentation and sun damage make it a valuable addition to any skincare routine. With patience, consistency, and the right formulation, retinol can help you achieve a more youthful and vibrant complexion.

Dry Cleaning

From a throwaway trend to a beauty essential, is dry shampoo hair to stay?

Available as either a powder or aerosol spray, dry shampoo, first formulated way back in 1972, contains absorbent substances –such as starch or silica – that help gather in oil, dirt, plus excess sebum and sweat from the hair without the need for water. All these things can accumulate on the scalp and hair strands, and when applied, the absorbent particles in the dry shampoo cling to grime and other impurities, making it easier to brush or shake them out of the hair. This results in a cleaner, fresher appearance without the use of water.

While dry shampoo has become a popular option for individuals with busy lifestyles, as well as for those who want to preserve their hair colour or avoid overwashing, its performance depends on a few things, the first being the quality of the product. Some formulas contain higher-quality ingredients that can more effectively absorb oil and dirt, while others may leave a residue or not perform as well. It's essential to find a dry shampoo that works well for your specific hair type and needs.

And on the subject of hair type, dry shampoo tends to be most effective for individuals with oily or fine hair, as these varieties are more prone to accumulating excess oil. Those with dry or curly hair may find that dry shampoo is less effective at removing build-up and may even exacerbate dryness.

In summing up, it’s important to understand that this clever product is ultimately designed with one thing in mind –convenience.

Weight-less

However, if you’re clinically obese, weight loss can be more complicated than just eating less and moving more! Often, after working hard to lose weight, you can quickly gain it back again, leaving you in a cycle of perpetual yo-yo dieting.

At Clinic 42, our doctors are offering an exciting new weight management programme using the injectable prescription-only medication Saxenda®. Not only can our weight management programme assist in lowering your body weight but most importantly, it can help prevent weight from being regained. Saxenda® is used as an adjunct to reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight management in obese adult patients who meet certain criteria.

Saxenda® is similar to the natural hormone that your body releases after eating to signal you are full. This results in you feeling less hungry at mealtimes and more satisfied with a smaller amount of food. For most people, eating less can result in long-term weight loss. In addition, reducing your weight and maintaining your weight loss may be beneficial for your overall health and wellbeing.

As Saxenda® is a prescription-only medication, it’s essential to book an initial consultation with our doctors.

During the consultation, our doctors will take a full medical history and a blood test is required to determine whether you are suitable. The injection itself is administered at home daily via a pen device with a very fine needle for maximum comfort. At your consultation, you’ll be shown how easy it is to use your device to ensure you have the confidence to do it at home.

Following the initial consultation, you’ll receive a one-week follow-up phone call and then a two-week face-to-face follow up consultation with our Clinic 42 nurse, where you can check-in and ask any further questions. At week three, you’ll have a second face-to-face consultation with our doctor, where your progress will be assessed and any necessary adjustments to your weight management programme can be made.

For those interested in additional information and support, all patients will be given access to the SaxendaCare patient portal. SaxendaCare offers weekly support emails and a comprehensive range of online tools where you can set goals, track your weight loss, and complete a food and exercise diary to assist you in your weight management programme.

Once you have reached your goals you can move into the maintenance phase of our weight management

programme. This step is vital to stabilise your new healthy weight for good! During the maintenance phase, the dose and frequency of your Saxenda® prescription is reduced and we will continue to monitor your progress every few months.

Saxenda® is an innovative new treatment in the management of attaining a healthy weight and Clinic 42 can help you to safely achieve your goals.

Regenerate in the Red

Red light therapy has enjoyed a recent spike in popularity due to its efficacy as a multi-faceted and versatile skin corrective treatment.

Treatments with LED light therapy machines are both natural and completely non-invasive, however this in no way diminishes its powerful anti-ageing and regenerative capabilities. Read on to discover the healing power of red light and what it can do for your skin!

Space age origins

LED and the practical application of light therapy for use on the body originated back in the 1980s when Nasa first began experimenting with LED. Nasa scientists were exploring different ways to photosynthesis plants to be able to grow them in space. During their work, they accidently discovered that LED (otherwise known as light emitting diodes) could be used to heal the human body also!

The word about LED and its healing properties continued to grow and in the 1990s, the US Navy Seals began to further explore its possible medical applications for the body. Before long, it was discovered that LED could heal wounds faster by regenerating damaged tissue. Depending on the colour of the light and the wavelength used, it was discovered that the different colours each trigger a corresponding and unique cellular response within the body, thus assisting the skin’s natural healing and rejuvenation process.

Since then, LED has gained immense traction over the past several years as both a wellness practice and an increasingly

popular skin treatment due to its versatility and effectiveness at treating a multitude of different skin conditions.

LED machines use specific wavelengths, with the various colours triggering different and unique healing reactions within the body. Red LED is probably the most well-known, in part due to its wide versatility and scope. For starters, red light can address tired and dull-looking skin as well as working to reduce the severity of wrinkles, including dynamic lines and expression lines.

Red light also stimulates blood flow and circulation, enhances cellular communication, and increases lymphatic flow and ATP production. Responsible for delivering energy to parts of the body, ATP is an organic compound that plays a vital role in assisting the skin regenerate itself. In addition, red light also reduces the enzyme that is responsible for breaking down collagen.

How red light therapy can help regenerate skin.
57 June 2023

As we get older and gravity takes its toll, our bodies’ collagen and elastin production rate slow right down, meaning we produce less and less often. This leads to an increase in fine lines, volume loss, and lax, saggy skin. Thankfully, red light treatments work to combat this by helping to boost collagen production levels within the body. In order to do this, red light specifically targets cells known as fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are responsible for collagen production and by encouraging them to produce more collagen, skin is refreshed, plumped, and rejuvenated.

Whilst LED therapy can be used as a standalone treatment, it can be layered with other facials or treatments as well. It can also be used as an add-on service to treat and fast-track skin’s healing post laser, IPL or peel treatments, or as part of a layer facial.

Convenient and safe

LED light therapy is safe for all skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin. LED light-based therapy is painfree, non-invasive and requires no posttreatment recovery or downtime, making it an attractive solution for those looking to treat their skin concerns.

One of the many benefits of LED red light therapy is that unlike other forms of light-based treatments, LED machines do not contain ultraviolet rays – making it completely safe and suitable for regular use. Speak to your practitioner if you happen to be on medication that can increase your skin’s sensitivity to light, but otherwise it is a safe option for all skin types.

In terms of price, a single red light LED treatment can be between $50-150, depending on where you are located

and if it’s combined with any other treatments or services. Sessions are usually 20-30 minutes long and your treatment provider may recommend a course of several treatments, dependant on what your unique skin goals are.  Red light can be used on the face and neck as well as other parts of the body such as back, décolleté, and hands.

This article was brought to you in partnership with beauty suppliers, The Global Beauty Group. To find out more about professional LED light therapy machines or to find a treatment specialist in your area, please visit their website theglobalbeautygroup.com.au .

As a result, we’ve seen an increase in clients who value the craftsmanship and timeless appeal of our cashmere pieces.

What’s your favourite restaurant in Commercial Bay?

It's hard to pick just one, but one of my favourites for a special meal would be Ahi. The food there is incredible. For lunch on the run there are just so many great options in Harbour Eats I don't think I could decide!

Functioning Fungi

The Global Drug Survey (GDS) of 120,000 people across 50 countries ranked recreational drugs from safest to most dangerous.

It found magic mushrooms to be safest by some distance – far safer than alcohol, which placed eighth, just above the once legal synthetic cannabis.

“Magic mushrooms are one of the safest drugs in the world,” notes consultant addiction psychiatrist and founder of the Global Drug Survey, Adam Winstock. “Death from toxicity is almost unheard of with poisoning with more dangerous fungi being a much greater risk in terms of serious harm.”

Mushrooms remain illegal in many countries, including Aotearoa, Australia, the UK, and the USA – though some American states have in recent years loosened laws around

them owing to their potential in treating mental health issues thanks to their main psychoactive compound, psilocybin, which can also induce hallucinations.

According to the 2017 GDS, more than 81% of the 28,000 people that had taken magic mushrooms said they were seeking a “moderate psychedelic experience”. But more recently, there has been a rise in microdosing, a subhallucinogenic experience that requires around a tenth of the regular recreational dose. Research by UK insurers LifeSearch found that the number of people microdosing during the pandemic increased more than 40%, with nearly a fifth of 18- to 34-year-olds continuing the habit. No longer

66

simply associated with hippy types, studies show microdosing to be especially popular within creative circles, Silicon Valley, and even some stressed-out parents looking for a wee pickme-up.

Robin Carhart-Harris, head of psychedelic research at Imperial College London, tells Grazia that the “brain can easily get stuck in unhealthy patterns, but psychedelics shake things up”. By stimulating serotonin-sensitive components of neurons, microdosing can promote “broader and richer communication styles”. According to US-based professional microdosing coach Paul Austin, mushrooms allow us to “face difficulties without numbing the pain” opening channels that allow us to “better understand ourselves and our behaviour”. And for those not wanting to risk breaking the law – or, worse, accidentally poisoning themselves by picking the wrong fungi – functional mushrooms are said to offer some of the positive mental benefits of their psychedelic cousins, without the (illegal) psilocybin. And as with most edible mushrooms, they may help lower cholesterol, improve gut health, boost the immune system, protect against cancer, and more.

Used by a variety of ancient cultures for millennia, some (brilliantly) named functional mushrooms include: reishi, said to alleviate stress and help with sleep; lion’s mane, known for its meaty texture, and nerve-supporting and creativityenhancing properties; turkey tail whose fan-like, chewy structure harbours prebiotics and antioxidants; and tremella, famed for its beautiful, sponge like appearance which aids in its ability to hold hundreds of times its weight in water, and is said to boost skin health.

As well as being able to be enjoyed the good old-fashioned way, functional mushrooms are available in all manner of imaginative forms including supplements, chocolate bars, and drink powders. I opted for an all-organic spiced cacao blend that comprised lion’s mane and reishi mushrooms mixed with the likes of ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, chilli, and cocoa, and nicely packaged in a compostable pouch. It’s prepared by mixing a couple of heaped teaspoons with hot water to make a creamy paste to then be topped up with hot milk, just like a hot chocolate. The smell is divine and the taste is probably best described as an earthy chai latte – and one that requires a little acquiring – greatly aided by some much appreciated, spectacular spiciness.

Though I was half-hoping to feel as though I was floating in a boat on a river with tangerine trees, and marmalade skies, that wasn’t quite the case. Rather than offering an instant hit like microdosing – or even a caffeine shot – functional mushrooms are said to be most effective when ingested over time, becoming part of a long term, daily ritual. Mine didn’t arrive until the busy – and most stressful – end of the publishing month (and a couple of weeks before my wedding). So perhaps not the best time of timing. Or maybe it was? I was inspired to pen, unsolicited, this issue’s editor’s note just a few hours after imbibing my first brew…

Taste & Drink

Wine columnist and connoisseur DENNIS KNILL gives his views on two Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel wines for the month.

From modest planting of 30 hectares of vines and a small underground cellar, Jacob’s Creek has emerged as one of the finest wineries in Australia, producing some of the world’s leading wine brands.

If it was not for the vision and enterprise by Johann Gramp in 1847 who planted the first vines along the banks of Jacob’s Creek, the winery would never have got off the ground. In 1850 Gramp and Sons was established and a new winery built to market the first vintage. Fast forward 175 years of exceptional winemaking – some of the best wines produced in this region continues to this day.

Here are two value-for-money wines worth exploring.

Let’s Eat Out

For a celebration of all that’s good to eat and drink, you don’t even need a plane ticket to capture that quintessential French spirit – just come dressed in pink and white.

Every year Auckland throws a party with a team of chefs bringing together some of the best French food and wine in a festival of great tastes from Provence.

Have you ever imagined dining at two long tables the full length of The Cloud to enjoy with 1,000 other gourmands an elegant five-course, five-hour degustation lunch paired with French wines? Well, these experiences were all part of the Provence long lunch held annually to enjoy great wines and to eat some wonderful gastronomic delights. For any food and wine festival to be successful, there has to be a winning formula. This year’s festival provided a challenge for those wanting to test their food and wine-tasting skills.

As the master of ceremonies takes centre stage there’s an intoxicating buzz that’s not due solely to the wine. We were asked to stand and sing the national anthem in te reo, English and French. We were deafened by the French countrymen’s overwhelming fervour as they sang with passion and emotion.

’20 Jacobs Creek Double Barrel cabernet sauvignon, RRP $24.

Displays great structure and texture with an abundance of concentrated fruit, delivering great balance. The firm background of ripe dry tannins makes this a crowd pleaser. Magnificent when paired with roast beef, lamb, duck, pork, veal, and game.

’20 Jacobs Creek Double Barrel shiraz, RRP $24.

Rich and satisfying in flavour, this very affordable full-bodied wine is long and wellstructured with a smooth and soft tannin finish that sits well on the palate. Nothing beats a glass of shiraz with roast beef, lamb cutlets, veal, lamb, and barbequed meats.

Then, time to have some fun with some great food and wine. Under the direction of Edouard Legoff, owner of Le Chef Restaurant, and Benjamin Longhurst sommelier, the food and wine begins to arrive while the party-like crowd is being entertained by the DJ. Everyone is happy and talking to strangers across the table, swapping stories with newfound friends.

As the afternoon moves on, we are entertained by mime artists, musicians, magicians and the stars of the show – a line-up of lively Folies Bergère dancing girls frolicking amongst the diners

And the verdict? The food rarely misses a beat with heartily flavoured traditional French fare served by a savvy floor crew elegantly dressed in black and white uniforms with red braces and bow ties. Enjoying a day in Provence for $123, plus wine, with so many maddened diners making plenty of noise makes for a very satisfying package. And to the organiser’s credit with every bottle of wine sold, $5 was donated to Breast Cancer Cure. Bravo!

A Mother's Touch

Coffee is the specialty product at Ground; however, the same emphasis is also placed on food.

There’s no kitchen, so the best possible ingredients are sourced and a unique spin on classic sandwiches are made fresh on site daily. Their Reuben toastie is extremely popular, and their ham and cheese croissant is made with a homemade Kasundi relish, which is a Bengali variety of mustard sauce, aromatically spiced and an amazing savoury condiment.

Much of the food served at Ground is baked by Sam’s mother, Christine. Her cheese scones and savoury feta muffins sell out daily, as does her banana bread, while her chilli sausage rolls are arguably among the best in Auckland – and best enjoyed with a side of Kasundi. Christine doesn’t cut corners with her approach to baking, the tasty, wholesome food promises to leave you very satisfied.

THE GIN-GER KISS COCKTAIL
73 June 2023

Architectural Design is about solving the BIG little issues…

I have designed many houses for clients that don't understand the logic of the iconic New Zealand rotary clothesline in the backyard. If the clothes aren't blown off the line, then it rains on them. Or, if left in full sun, they become stiff as a board. So, why would you put them outside to dry? Maybe in the old days with stay-at-home mums it worked, although my mum complained about the long cold walk to the clothesline.

Drying clothes in the winter has always been an issue.

In the last house I designed, the brief was to get the clothes horses out of the north facing lounge, which drove the husband crazy. So, when designing their laundry, I suggested an ASKO drying cabinet.

Drying cabinets are common in Scandinavia with their colder climate. Drying rooms are a must in snow ski clubs and resorts.

A DIY friend has a Dampchaser wall heater fitted inside an old wardrobe which does dry clothes but doesn't address the moisture issue. Getting rid of the moisture inside a house is a must.

The drying cabinet doesn't replace a drier which is faster at drying items such as towels. The main benefit of a drying cabinet is that they are gentler on your delicate clothing and fabrics such as shirts, silks, and linens, and because they are gentle, they give them a longer life. You can also dry leather and rubber items. The drying cabinets can be vented, be a condenser, or a heat pump type.

But wait, there is another laundry appliance which is the home dry cleaner, for want of another name. It deodorises with steam, think silk shirts. There are several models on the market, the LG styler, the Samsung air dresser, and Fisher & Paykel are launching their one later this year.

Chevron Hassett

On until 10 June

This month in homage to the litmus paper of society – artists – we follow the journey they take from art school to international stardom: First Stop, Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs), and the exhibition spaces that encapsulate their manifestos.

Far, far away by Chevron Hassett is now open at Artspace

In this exhibition Hassett responds to the heritage of the Artspace building as a Post Office. Gathering contrasting encounters from daily life together and etching into them, the artist conjures an autobiography that emerges specifically from an experience of urban Indigeneity. Here, the sense of a letter sent somewhere, weaves lines through time and connection, through Maui, Rauponga Whakarare, and Rauponga Haehae (genealogical patterning also present in Ngati Porou carvings) to evolve a project of cultivation.

Emme Orbach investigates elements and resources native to Aotearoa from research collected in 2022-23 from site visits across the North Island. The exhibition explores themes of impermanence and the passage of time. The artist is curious about the awe-inspiring yet existential predicament of comprehending nature that surpasses the human lifetime – of minerals that span thousands of years in creation.

A Place To Call Home speaks to the generational presence of Asian New Zealanders and reveals the role that their art plays in Aotearoa's contemporary cultural landscape. The artists’ narratives recognise traditions that span the Pacific and Asian continent, and reflect a broad conversation of cultural evolution within the New Zealand population at large. Artworks by Luise Fong, Rhea Maheshwari, Louie Bretaña, Tanja McMillan (Misery), Bev Moon, Naomi Azoulay, Cindy Huang, Abhi Chinniah and Yeonjae Choi ranging from paintings, photography, sculpture and ceramics will be on display. The Good, the Bad, and the Foggy

For generations it was considered an old wives’ tale, the tendency for new mothers to become somewhat scatterbrained for the first few months of parenthood.

78

A 2018 study published in the Medical Journal of Australia found pregnant women performed worse than non-pregnant women on tasks measuring attention, decision-making, planning, and memory. It was also found that different stages of the pregnancy affect women’s brains in various ways, with most of the ‘decline’ occurring during the first trimester. Study coauthor Sasha Davies argues ‘baby brain’ may be “an important adaptive phenomenon” that might help women prepare for raising their children “by allowing their brains to adapt to their new role as mothers".

Other research found pregnancy even reduced grey matter in the brain which can then take up to six years to repair – though when it does, it builds back stronger. And it’s not the only benefit.

During mammalian pregnancies – including human ones – there is an exchange of cells and DNA between mum and bub that’s known as foetal-maternal microchimerism (named after the chimera, a beast of Greek mythology which was part goat, lion, and dragon). While the maternal cell exchange is thought to last only into early infancy, perhaps to aid with the child’s immune response, research shows that cells from the child can live on in the mother for years longer, sometimes even for the rest of her life.

The concept of such a physical, everlasting maternal bond is a beautiful one and one that has been observed for decades, but scientists are still uncertain of its purpose – though research does point to it generally being beneficial. Some studies have shown the cells play a part in healing mother’s skin wounds –including caesarean section scars – by helping boost collagen production. Others have shown foetal cells to migrate all over the mother’s body, embedding themselves in organs including the heart, blood, and brain.

The cells’ presence in the breast has led to speculation that microchimerism may be a self-serving process to ensure survival by increasing milk supply, for example. And microchimerism has also been associated with lowering the risk of breast cancer.

However, there is also evidence of an increased likelihood of other cancers and some autoimmune diseases, which may explain why women are three times more likely to suffer rheumatoid arthritis than men and are generally at higher risk of autoimmunity – a theory being that the cells are recognised as foreign bodies by the mother’s body, triggering a response by her immune system.

Interestingly, the sex of the baby may even be significant. Though cardiovascular disease appears slightly higher among women hosting male cells, their overall mortality rate was 60% lower owing to lower incidence of other diseases, including cancer. A study published in International Journal of Epidemiology concluded 85% of the women with male cells lived to 80, versus 67% of those without them. The research also found that male DNA may also help mothers fend off Alzheimer’s.

“There’s so much observation out there,” study lead author Kamper-Jørgensen, an associate professor of public health at the University of Copenhagen, tells the Atlantic . “Having kids protects you from breast cancer, but we don’t really know why. If you have kids, you live longer, but we don’t really know why. Women live longer than men, but we don’t know why. This phenomenon, this may be it.”

But it turns out that that foggy ‘baby brain’ is actually a thing – and it might not be the only thing you think it is.

Developing FutureReady Students

In an age of rapid change

Much like the world around us, education is rapidly evolving. The availability of artificial intelligence (AI), changes in the skills sought by employers, and an increasing focus on interpersonal skills and problem solving within the education field are just some examples of change that schools must adapt to.

The days of the teacher acting as the sole source of knowledge and every student being expected to learn at the same rate and in the same way should be far behind us.

Educators need to focus on meeting the needs of each individual student. We must equip students with the skills to evaluate information, assess its reliability and collaborate with others, not only with those in the same room but potentially with people from around the world.

Computational thinking – the ability to express and solve problems in a logical way similar to the way computers work – is also important in making sure students are prepared for the increased use of technology in the workplace. Providing opportunities for inquiry-based learning, where students are encouraged to learn by questioning and investigating, is also key as this develops transferable skills that can be applied throughout life such as analysis and evaluation skills.

The ability to communicate effectively and appreciate the benefits of working with colleagues from a wide range of cultural backgrounds will continue to be an increasing requirement of day-to-day work.

Preparing our students to be truly global citizens who are ready to take on challenges and who have the skills employers require is now something that all students need to have the opportunity to develop.

As educators, our ability to innovate and fully embrace the unprecedented rapid pace of change is critical to making sure our students are provided with an exceptional education that prepares them well for the workplace and the future.

FORGET-ME-NOT HOLIDAYS for women to Asia

Deborah Woodham has always been a keen traveller, but camping was never for her – preferring nice hotels and exotic places. Some years ago on a family holiday, she fell in love with Vietnam.

The concept of creating a divine, boutique holiday just for women came to her whilst wandering the lanternlined streets of the old town in Hoi An. It was so charming and romantic that she knew other women would enjoy the experience too. After a few test trips back

to Vietnam she launched her business, Forget-me-not Holidays. The tours were popular, women loved the concept, and then, well covid…

Happily, this year has seen the business back in full swing, having returned from an incredible 10-day trip recently with a wonderful group of women who were so excited to be travelling and exploring again. Another trip is planned for September.

Art & About 82

Verve was excited to be able to talk travel with Deborah.

In your opinion what makes ForgetMe-Not Holidays special?

They’re special because they are holidays, not tours where you are travelling through a country on a bus for days on end. Women get to unpack and relax at stunning hotels whilst getting to know the locals, diving into the culture and letting go of some of the busyness of life at home. In Vietnam for example, we spend six nights in Hoi An and three nights in Ho Chi Minh City. There are sightseeing and new experiences every day, as well as free time for relaxing by the pool, cocktails and massages!

The groups are small – around 10 people – which means everyone gets to know each other and feel included, and a tour host from New Zealand is with the group every step of the way.

Who joins these tours and why?

Most women come on their own – sorry, husbands sit this one out! – often because finding a friend or sister to travel with doesn’t work out. Lots of us have raised children and done the hard yards and feel perhaps it’s time to have some fun. Women are great together, sharing stories with fun and laughter is a great healer.

I’ve planned it all with women in mind, which means it’s very easy to relax. There’s a full itinerary ready and waiting – just turn up and take comfort in knowing you are safe to immerse yourself in an incredible experience with new friends.

When curating travel experiences, what factors are most important?

Hotel selection is extremely important. Obviously, a great location with a pool is a must, but it needs to feel right. I personally visit many hotels when putting the holidays together to ensure the standards and service levels are exceptional.

I work with local women in business in each country as much as possible to curate a very authentic, not-so-touristy experience. Women get to see how the locals live, swap photos of their families, and engage in conversations over homecooked meals.

I love the idea of returning home with a deeper understanding of another culture and their traditions and customs. It makes you realise that most women the world over want similar things: a peaceful life, happy and healthy families, and less stress!

How do you ensure that clients’ individual needs and preferences are met?

Often women have different needs when travelling, and being able to accommodate them is one of the benefits of being a small business. The host is there to ensure everyone is included and comfortable. If you have a dicky knee and don’t wish to climb 250 steps in the heat to see a monument, that’s just fine. If you would like to sit by the pool all day and do your own thing, also fine! Dietary requirements are easily taken care of, too. If airports cause you stress, we’ll glide you through the whole process with ease. It’s a holiday after all, and women are free to please themselves!

Any unforgettable success stories or memorable anecdotes you’d like to share?

I could go on for days here! Helen booked her holiday with us because she had a big birthday coming up and wanted to do something out of the box. Due to her unsociable hours of shift work over many years, her friend group had become limited and it was time to make new connections. She embraced her holiday with the best attitude, we all enjoyed having her as part of the group and she still regularly meets up with her fellow travellers. I wrote a blog about her on my website and after reading it, a lovely lady called to book a holiday, saying making new connections had really resonated with her.

Here’s what Helen said about her trip: “You will travel with likeminded people all looking for a memorable experience. Come with an open mind, a sense of adventure and get ready to have the time of your life! Every promise fulfilled, 10/10 high recommended.”

Nurturing Your Winter Garden

The cold weather has settled in, the deciduous trees have shed their leaves, and winter is officially upon us. Despite the chill, there’s still plenty to do to keep your garden healthy and thriving.

Veggies

Continue planting out seedlings, including lettuce, broad beans, onion, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, silverbeet, and leek. Depending on how cold your garden gets, protect tender plants and seedlings by covering them with frost cloth. Protect your veggies from those pesky slugs and snails with Tui Quash. Plant garlic and shallots now.

Fruit

Strawberries are back in stock at Kings stores! Plant them now so they can get settled and produce a good crop come spring. Cover the soil with strawberry straw to protect the fruit from fungal diseases. Prune back new growth on

established fruit trees on a dry, sunny day and apply pruning paste to all cuts.

Flowers

Keep your garden looking tidy by deadheading hydrangeas and cutting back any other shrubs, perennials, or annuals that are past their best. Add a pop of winter colour with hellebores and winter annuals like cineraria, pansies, viola, polyanthus, primula, asters, and hardy mini cyclamen. Wait until July to start pruning roses.

Indoor Plants

Start watering less, keeping an eye on moisture levels by testing the soil with your finger or a moisture meter. Keep

plants away from heaters and draughts. Wipe dust off leaves and wash windows for better light levels.

General Tasks

Sow green crop seeds (mustard, lupin and oats) to bare areas in the veggie patch, which will rejuvenate the soil ready for spring. Layer up compost with leaves, grass clippings, small branches, and any other organic matter to build a rich compost for the spring. Add gypsum to the soil to help with the breakdown of clay.

GRATEFUL DEAD MEET-UP AT THE MOVIES 2023

22 June

A year after Brent Mydland's passing, the Grateful Dead returned to the summer stadium circuit, playing Chicago's Soldier Field for the first time, with two keyboard players filling the seat Brent left vacant. Bruce Hornsby's and Vince Welnick’s presence and musical contributions reinvigorated and revitalised the Grateful Dead, and the inspiration of the Dead's playing was palpable. On a Saturday night in front of 60,000 fans, the Dead played what is often considered one of the greatest shows of the Bruce-Vince era, up there with the second Giants Stadium show from a few days earlier. From the original six-camera video feed that appeared on the stadium's big screens and the pristine soundboard audio, Chicago 6/22/91 is an incredible performance start-to-finish.

Horoscopes

This is a period in which you are more likely to establish, or solidify, a significant partnership; or you could be enhancing an existing relationship. Financial benefits could possibly come through partnerships. For most of you who are already partnered, you are likely to find more joy in close relationships due to a more easygoing and tolerant attitude towards others and partnering in general.

Your sense of timing and balance is superb now, and your efficiency is improved many times over. Cleaning out closets, reorganising the environment in which you live and work, and other such activities, come to the fore. Others may turn to you for advice or recognise your competency and experience in a particular area of life. Look forward to what changes come your way just now along with taking a leap into the unknown.

It’s a period conducive to turning dreams into reality, particularly creative ones. Your personality toughens up, but your powers of persuasion run high. Your tastes in romance, recreation, and the arts are slowly but surely refining and blossoming. Relationships continue to figure strongly in your priorities. You are finding more joy in others, and they are more responsive to your needs.

Your career is receiving strong energy this month. It’s picking up pace, and professional matters become clearer and more straightforward. You are feeling remotivated after some confusion and lack of enthusiasm in recent months. This could be a time of purging yourself of literal or psychic ‘junk’, as there is a sense that decluttering your life will be beneficial to your emotional wellbeing.

You are restless with routines, and tend to answer to your own internal rhythm rather than paying attention to society’s rhythms. Your hobbies can be out of the ordinary, and so can your relationships with children and lovers, depending on how this restlessness is affecting you. It’s an excellent period in your life for joining a group or association that helps you to feel part of a team.
