Guest Editor’s Notes Ashlee Lala

The August issue of Verve is particularly close to my heart as it marks exactly one year since I began delving into the worlds of fashion, beauty, health, and fitness for the magazine. To mark the occasion—and in celebration of our annual bumper Best in Beauty feature—Fran and Jude handed me the editor’s note. Over the past few weeks, I have reflected greatly on the concept of beauty and how it influences our experience of life. Of course, defi nitions of beauty are particular to each of us, but as a magazine, Verve’s mission has consistently been to reveal the beauty in everyday life through inspiring stories and escapism. Which is why, along with products and treatments, this month we’ve also mused on the miracle of life: pregnancy, breastfeeding and the complete joy of bringing a new soul into the world. Jude’s daughter recently gave birth to an absolutely beautiful baby girl called Moss and I just can’t stop smiling at videos and photos.

the energy of a shared experience. At times, beauty might be something evanescent, made more powerful by the transient nature of its existence, or it might be something wild, sublime and even frightening, perhaps. Beauty is simultaneously personal and universal. It’s much more than a simple aesthetic pleasure. It’s a feeling, but to experience it you must understand what it is that truly ignites your soul, then be courageous enough to seek that out. So, where have I landed with this month’s ponderings on beauty? Where do we fi nd beauty, and how do we become the most beautiful, radiant versions of ourselves? I think the answer lies in being honest. It requires being brave enough to remain true to the essence of who you are, living that out, and embracing the possibilities that come with it. Ashlee x

And while travel as we knew it is off the cards, we can still take pleasure in being curious about the world and perhaps even the beauty of that feeling of longing and wanderlust. This month we journey to Italy, explore Tuscan experiences, luxurious designer brands and rustic cuisine. Musing on the beauty of travel has also led me to contemplate how together, as people, we inhabit the same physical world yet view it through a different lens depending on a combination of cultural conditioning, inherent personality traits, and our pasts. Some of us experience beauty in quiet moments of silence and solitude, while others feel the beauty and pulse of life through

The Top 5 Benefits of Avocado for your Skin

Health, Beauty & Fitness

34

There’s no denying avocado reigns supreme on the favourite foods list. It’s a healthy fat and it’s delicious. What’s more, your complexion loves the bountiful nutrient profile of avocados.

Your skin drinks up avocado oil when it’s used as an ingredient in skincare, so whether you eat it or apply it, avocado’s impressive multi-tasking ability is a win-win. Indeed, all of an avocados tasty green goodness whets the appetite and promotes radiant vitality from the inside out. Why is avocado so good for our complexion?

Both the flesh and the oil of the avocado brim with nutrients including folate, niacin, potassium, vitamins B6, C, E, and monounsaturated (healthy) fat. This is why a diet high in avocados ups your ‘glow’ as they nourish, replenish, repair and moisturise inside and outside. According to the fabulous folk at The Avo Tree, “Avocado oil is the moisture-boosting, skin-strengthening solution to a healthy, youthful-looking face. As well as having anti-inflammatory effects that soothe blemishes and acne, vitamins C and E join forces with antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin to fight free radicals. Carotenoids help the skin build stronger structures while improving brightness. And oleic acid, vitamins D and E and a nutrient called ‘D-mannoheptulose’ encourage cell turnover and collagen production — processes that slow down with age.” There’s no arguing that this delicious fruit is incredibly versatile. Who doesn’t love to eat guacamole? You can also pour the oil over a salad or cook with it (it has a higher smoke point than extra virgin olive oil), down an avocado oil capsule or moisturise with your avocado oil-based skincare. Tip: Whether you’re looking for avocado oil for the pantry or as a skincare ingredient, choose versions that have been coldpressed and are unrefi ned.

Five Skin-Loving Benefits Of Avocado 1.A High-Performing Moisturiser

Anyone who’s ever applied moisturiser to their skin knows how smooth and dewy it makes it look and feel. When it comes to an avocado oil-based moisturiser — in skincare science speak — it’s an emollient and acts as an occlusive. This means it softens the skin and provides a barrier that seals in hydration reducing what’s known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Or the natural evaporation of water from the skin. This makes it a great choice for all skin types, particularly very dry or damaged skin. 2. Antioxidant Power

Vitamins C and E are powerful antioxidants and help to keep skin looking its best as well as diminishing the signs of fi ne lines and wrinkles. Antioxidants act like warriors. They neutralise and protect us from free radicals — destructive molecules produced by environmental factors such as damaging UV rays from the sun and pollution or lifestyle triggers such as smoking. 3. Anti-Inflammatory

It’s become widely known that inflammation is one of the key reasons behind premature ageing and many chronic illnesses. It’s even birthed the new term of ‘inflammaging’. Research has shown that avocados have formidable anti-inflammatory properties and can therefore be helpful not just for a more youthful complexion but also for inflammatory skin conditions like acne, eczema and dermatitis. 4. Promotes Collagen Synthesis

Collagen is a protein responsible for the plump look of the complexion and as we age its production slows down. Researchers have found avocado oil promotes an increase in soluble collagen content in the skin which contributes to overall suppleness and elasticity. It also forms a stronger skin barrier or protective layer. 5. Wound Healing

Studies have also found evidence of avocado oil’s wound healing benefits. The linoleic acid and oleic acid in avocados have shown exciting potential for repairing injured skin. Overall the science says avocado oil improves dermal metabolism and aids the complexion to maintain a good level of hydration and to look its best at any age.

The Hottest Facial in Town

So, your skin has been poppy red for the past two hours and now, you are defi nitely ready for anything. Who would have thought that putting hot paprika on inflamed skin would completely change it and so quickly! Aunt Ilcsi made sure that one of her favourite products was included in this now ‘cult’ treatment, which has a very insinuating Hungarian name: ‘Before Event’. Even until this day, this continues to be an interesting topic among those who are eager to fi nd out where this name comes from. Thanks to its wondrous capabilities of skin transformation, it would be just as popular today under any other regular name. Ilcsi’s Paprika Herbal Treatment is the hero in all of this. A handmade natural organic cosmetic that has a very simple, but extremely active ingredient: hot paprika. This ingredient increases blood flow, renewing the skin and making the signs of acne and rosacea disappear. Still curious? Let’s look at the story behind the name from Aunt Ilcsi herself. “I thought that you should have looked beautiful to make something fancy happen. That’s why the treatment is called ‘Before Event’. Back in the day, when I made it for the first time I was scolded like an idiot, ‘What does Ilcsi think? Does she believe in changing the world with putting paprika on inflamed skin which then becomes cherry red, pimples disappear and reddening disappears?’ And yeah, that’s true, it has been red as a poppy for two hours but now, no pimples and no rosacea. Even perfect skin can be rejuvenated from this, as it improves circulation which renews the skin in a beautiful way.” – Aunt Ilcsi

So, how has this treatment from an organic, wild-harvested professional skincare range from Hungary changed so many people’s skin? As we have said, hot paprika (capsaicin protoalkaloid) increases blood flow, which warms up the skin, and leads to a more intensive blood and lymph circulation. Aunt Ilcsi was well before her time believing that most skins did not suffer from problems they were merely, just lazy! Getting those skins stimulated and working properly with regards to circulatory and elimination processes, you will fi nd that most skins will correct itself. “This treatment is a very unique experience for my client’s with the flushing and increased blood circulation. Also the after effects are something to be witnessed. If you are attending an important event, I suggest this treatment is performed 24 hours before hand or the morning of the event for best effect” – Louise Gray. Dr Iona Weir of Atopis Skincare WORDS— VICKI HOLDER

There’s a lot on the horizon for Atopis, a skincare brand which uses biotechnology science combined with nature’s bioactives to produce healthy glowing natural skin that doesn’t need to be covered up by makeup. ATOPIS.COM

Health, Beauty & Fitness

38

Watch out for a new range of powerful supplements for inner gut health, immunity and skin repair. Atopis also expanded their skincare range into the US and they’re opening a new bio-tech lab next month.

Can you tell us what led you to launch your own skincare company? I worked for many years in biomedical research

on programmed cell death (apoptosis) and immunology, and developed an oral eczema pharmaceutical treatment. Other skincare products on the market sounded good, but scientifically, they did not solve the problems they claimed to; things like anti-ageing, acne issues, reducing eczema flare-ups and rosacea. The science was not there for most of the products on the market. And the skincare options on the market weren’t sustainable skin solutions. Acne creams, containing alcohol and antibiotics, and eczema creams containing steroids, in particular, would simply trap people in a cycle of dependency, without healing or restoring the underlying issues at a microbial level. I knew this wasn’t right and knew I could provide a solution that would work. I had also been involved in the development of several other natural treatment products including Phloe and IBSacol for gut health and saw a direct link between gut and skin health, which was fascinating. All the natural creams I researched were about avoiding nasties (like parabens and synthetics) but weren’t effective at restoring skin. What makes Atopis different to other skincare brands?

I know it sounds technical, but it is. Atopis Skincare was developed using over 30 years of scientific expertise into controlling programmed cell death to truly slow skin cell ageing. It uses the skin’s own biochemical pathways to rebuild and protect the skin cell matrix. The results are amazing. It’s proven to plump the skin and modulate the immune system response within the skin cells to restore skin health.

How has your background in cellular science and plant science research helped shape your vision for Atopis?

My science background combines biomedical science with plant and microbial research. This has enabled me to develop effective globally patented skincare solutions from nature for biomedical applications.

Our superpower is our globally patented Myrecil® which is a miracle for skin. It’s a botanical enzymatic fermentation process I developed using plant stem cell technology to deliver results clinically superior to topical retinols—without the side effects of sun sensitivity or harsh reactions. Our products are scientifically proven to increase collagen and hyaluronic acid in the extracellular skin matrix. This helps reduce wrinkles and lines. It plumps and fi rms, for dewy, radiant skin. We’ve had independent scientific and clinical testing to prove it. What are your favourite Atopis products and can you explain what they’re for and why you use them? Can I say

all of them?! I’m absolutely in love with the Intensive Restore Night Cream. It’s super concentrated. I’m 55 and look younger than I did at 45. My skin was awful; so dry and damaged and I was living at beauty clinics trying to fi x it. Years of rosacea had damaged everything. It’s true when we say Myrecil® is a miracle for your skin; it reprogrammes skin cells at base level. If you could recommend one thing to our readers for their beauty routines, what would it be? If I could go back in time

I would use far more sunscreen. UV is the number one cause of skin ageing.

Other than professional beauty services and/or application of products, are there any lifestyle aspects that you consider integral to your beauty regime? Good nutrition,

sleep, stress management, exercise and social interaction all help support healthy skin. But most importantly, just relax, and don’t get stressed trying to be perfect. I love that I no longer need any clinical beauty treatments as Atopis has given me healthy skin. Exciting times for Atopis and anybody looking to improve their skin health.

Lactobacilli A Girl’s Best Friend

Historically, public perception of bacteria has been negative. But trillions of bacteria live on the skin and in the mouth, gut and, if you’re a woman, vagina. A healthy vagina is dominated by lactobacillus, a common type of bacteria typically found in fermented foods. The vaginal microbiota

It’s long been known that microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining vaginal health. Lactobacillus produces lactic acid to maintain the vaginal pH between 3.8 and 4.2—too acidic for those nasty pathogens. Good bacteria also produce the likes of H2O2, further inhibiting pathogens. Simply by outnumbering problem-causing microorganisms, good bacteria protect themselves, and us, from unwanted microorganisms. Consequences of an unbalanced microbiota

Low lactobacillus levels may cause itching, abnormal discharge, odour or a rash, which may lead to infection (bacterial vaginosis), requiring antibiotic treatment. Swab tests enable doctors to analyse the types and numbers of the bacteria of your vaginal discharge to diagnose and come up with treatment plans. Bacterial vaginosis is linked to severe conditions that can have major impacts, including preterm delivery, higher risk of STDs, and infertility.

increase the risk of infections coming back because antibiotics kill protecting bacteria, the lactobacilli. Step forward, probiotics! Probiotics are bacteria beneficial to our health. Increasing evidence suggests that with carefully selected probiotics, a woman can build or regain the balance of her vaginal microbiota, preventing the risk of infection in the fi rst place and lowering the risk of the problem reoccurring. Probiotics are present in daily foods like yoghurt and kefi r for general digestive health, but the amount is often inadequate. Also, the right types of bacteria are required to reach desired body sites. This is where MAAB’s MAVAG Fastmelt probiotic supplement come in. MAVAG Fastmelts are a purpose-made probiotic product that maintains and reinforces women’s intimate health by providing a minimum of one billion CFU per daily serving, a size of just one gram. Even better, MAAB Fastmelts are unlike many supplement products in the form of capsules or pills for they are a tasty but sugar-free probiotic powder that can be ingested directly without water. So, it’s quite a pleasant and healthy trick even for those who resent the idea of taking pills to stay healthy. Simply pour one gram of probiotic powder onto your tongue and enjoy, safe in the knowledge that those invisible little friends will be travelling southwards to do their jobs!

Intimate care from within

The balance of vagina microbiota may be disrupted by external or internal factors such as changing sexual partners (especially with unprotected sex); changes in hormone levels (like menopause); or even smoking. Ironically, although antibiotics are used to cure the more serious vaginal infections, they also

Tell us about your school? We’re an Auckland-based fi lm, TV, fashion and beauty makeup, and hair training school, passionate about creating successful makeup and hair careers for a new generation.

We opened 13 years ago when it became apparent the skill base of newly graduated makeup artists wasn’t high enough. Our trainers are practising makeup artists, which is integral to the learning experience. This industry is constantly changing so me must keep up with those changes to prepare our students best we can before they step out into the workforce. The team at The Makeup School is actively involved in the industry so can offer a more specialised, relevant curriculum than the NZQA one. There’s so much more to being a makeup artist than makeup application; the more we can teach our students about the industry as a bigger picture, the better they’ll be prepared when they leave. We’ve recently restructured our courses so students can train in way of micro credentials. This means if you are already trained in a particular area but want to upskill, say with special effects, you can enrol for that module as a standalone. It’s fast becoming a popular way to train, enabling MUAs to earn between training. We also pride ourselves on being the only school in NZ where the directors are still actively working on filmsets, offering opportunities for graduates to work with them. It’s such a wonderful feeling being on a set and looking around at these talented, dynamic makeup artists going from strength to strength and knowing we were a small part of that. Which courses do you offer at The Makeup School and how often do they run? A full-time diploma course for those wanting

to become professional makeup artists and hair stylists in the film, television and beauty industries, and a part-time certificate course for those more interested in the beauty industry and who need to keep working while they train. We also find our shorter introduction courses are popular for those wanting to test the waters before taking the plunge! Additionally, we offer private training for people wanting to learn how to apply their own makeup and holiday workshops for teenagers. You have a store in your Brown Street studio open to the public – can you tell our readers a little about this and the

opening hours. We opened Makeup Collective so makeup artists both training and out working could more easily access professional must-have supplies. We specialise in makeup brushes, lashes, storage bags, hair products, accessories, special effects products and supply many large productions in NZ.

Our Mykitco brush range is popular with makeup artists—and the public are now catching on. They’re available in sets or as individuals, beautiful quality and well-priced. Makeup Collective is open Monday-Friday. 9 am-5pm. Older women and their makeup—do you offer anything for them? We get many mature women who feel stuck in their

makeup style who want to update the look they have been doing— or not doing—for the past 20 years! As we age our skin changes and the products and the way we apply them change too. We also find most women want to look and feel good but don’t have the time or inclination to spend too much time getting ready. Women can book a private workshop either by themselves or with friends at a time that suits. We design something that works for them whether it be more of a fun workshop evening with bubbles, or a more hands-on makeup lesson. We encourage people to bring in their makeup bags, even if there are only a few products in there, and we will go through and help them decide what to keep and what doesn’t work. It’s not unusual for women to say they have had a product in their bag and never known how or where to use it!

What is happening in NZ in the film and television industries at present? New Zealand’s film and television industries are

exploding—there are many offshore studio productions coming here as well as local productions. Securing enough makeup artists for all these productions can be difficult with a high demand so it has been the perfect time to train. We are finding that because of the pandemic, less people are travelling and are instead looking for new areas to train in. Because NZ is a popular filming location there is plenty of work around for good makeup artists.

We choose the film projects we work on so we can split our time being based at our Ponsonby studios and being out on set. Recent movies completed are MURU an NZ feature film starring Cliff Curtis, and No Exit, a Disney thriller with an all-US cast, produced by The Queens Gambits co-creator, Frank Scott. Both these movies are yet to be released.

Bee Well with Comvita

Most Verve readers are probably aware of how vital bees are to the survival of the planet, responsible for pollinating a third of the food we eat. But most are probably unaware of the profound intricacies of their hive communities, and so, the good folk at Comvita are more than happy to oblige by enlightening us. Via their fi rst Wellness Lab (there will be more to follow in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and San Francisco), Comvita’s mission is advocacy, to “create a world where bees can thrive”. Positioned at 139 Quay Street, the Comvita Wellness Lab is split between two state-of-the-art parts. The apothecary-inspired shopfront has beakers laden with honey that line shelves overlooking hand-blown glass globes, offering a selection of honey aromas. There are soaps, the faintest of hypnotic buzzing and a screen alive with bees. This space caters to all senses. Local artisans have supplied furnishings like kauri wood countertops and matai timber floors beneath a ceiling of repurposed plastic mesh that takes a honeycomb form, courtesy of Wellington-based Kaynemaile. Online, the 3D virtual store is complemented by an educational forest where visitors can explore Aotearoa’s native fauna and flora.

bees tend to the sick (using their own antimicrobial honey), and “engineer” bees keep an optimum temperature by fanning their wings like organic air conditioners. Bees really are awesome. Noelani imparts plenty more fascinating facts throughout (“a bee will produce just one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime!”) while guiding guests through a vineyard-inspired honey-tasting session—just like wine, “honey is an expression of place”. Teardrop-shaped glass Goûte spoons are used to scoop out the sweet sticky nectar, like a lollipop, or a fi nger run around a bowl. Guests are also afforded the opportunity to sample Comvita’s Special Reserve UMF™ 25+ (MGO 1200+) Mānuka Honey, among the rarest in the world (another fun fact: though all honey has antibiotic compounds, mānuka harbours by far the most unique and complex ones). David Banfield, Group CEO of Comvita, emphasises that the lab was launched to provide Kiwis with a world-class space where they can “gain a new-found appreciation for New Zealand honey and our amazing friends, the bees”. Verve reckons they’ve certainly have done just that, it’s two thumbs up from us—we’re still buzzing!

The hive theme continues in the rear space, where Verve is led by host Noelani Waters, a beekeeper and bee-breeder whose expertise and passion for her profession is as infectious as it is inspiring. The cylindrical room, with a 180-degree cinema, screen suggests a planetarium, but rather than a galaxy of stars, Comvita—in conjunction with esteemed gastrophysicist Professor Charles Spence, who’s previously collaborated with the likes of Heston Blumenthal —has built a bee’s-eye view of the world. From plush armchairs, guests journey through blades of grass and towering treetops before entering a beehive where “bouncer” bees make sure no stranger bees infi ltrate, “nurse”

Tasting sessions run daily at 12:30pm, and cost $20 per person with 100 percent of the ticket price going to support For the Love of Bees (fortheloveofbees.co.nz) and Saving the Wild (savingthewild.com). Lip Service Clinic 42

I have always been a great one for setting goals and working towards them. Over the past year I made it a goal to focus on improving my skin. I undertook a number of bio-stimulatory treatments and my complexion has never looked better; it’s smooth, even in colour, and glowing.

combines perfectly balanced microdoses of two of the most highly effective anti-ageing products and a technique which untethers the skin from the muscle to help eliminate the lines above the top lip.

It was a gradual process that has been difficult to see in the mirror but patients and colleagues have started stopping me in the hall and asking me what I’ve been doing.

Local anaesthetic is used, similar to a dental block, which numbs the top lip completely making the procedure pain free. Some changes are evident immediately, with complete results 2-3 weeks to be at their maximum. Initial swelling can be expected as well as some bruising.

What I am starting to notice in the mirror is that I’ve been neglecting the area around my mouth and it’s beginning to look like it don’t match the rest of my face.

Cost of Barcode Lip treatment $850 - $1,000

The areas of our face that have more mobile skin like our eyes and mouths are more prone to showing age. What used to be dynamic wrinkles, those that occur because of movement, are now becoming static wrinkles that never go away. As if someone forgot to iron them back out. The product that was used to get such an amazing result on my skin wasn’t suitable for use around the eyes or mouth as the constant muscle movement could have caused the product to shift. Treating these more mobile areas can be challenging and requires both expertise in facial anatomy and a solid understanding of the properties of each of the different products on the market. Choosing the right product or combination of products is critical to the outcome. However not all clinics have access to a wide range of products or training on the latest techniques. This could account for why we still see people with frozen expressionless faces and who dribble as they sip their coffee! when, in this day and age, there are better solutions.

HAPPY FACE Developed by a Mexican plastic surgeon, Frank Rosengaus, the Happy Face treatment enables us to elevate the downturned corners of the mouth, soften the marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth towards the chin) and any early signs of jowling, and then balance this by softening the frown lines. Cost of Happy Face treatment $650 (with a nurse) And that’s what I forgot, BALANCE, and maybe I was underestimating the amazing result the bio-stimulatory products would have as time went on. From now on I will be practising what we preach here at Clinic 42 and making sure I take a more holistic approach, making small subtle improvements often rather than focusing too much on any one area.

Our two most popular treatments for the mouth area are:

Burnout and the Mobilisation of Energy Annamaria Garden has over 20 years’ experience in the field of organisational and personal transformation, and in running her own practice in London for 15 years.

Health, Beauty & Fitness

48

She has a PhD from MIT in Boston and served for nearly five years on the research faculty of London Business School. She now lives in New Zealand and has authored seven books.

Tell us a little about Burnout and the Mobilisation of Energy ? It aims to help people who are burnt out or are on

the slippery slope towards burnout. It explores the subject of burnout in individuals, jobs and organisations. It looks at the severe depletion of energy that defi nes burnout. It describes three conditions that distinguish high from low burnout people; boundaries, closure and self-investment. Burnout is in dependent of the mobilisation of energy and the book describes the latter and what creates it. The book is part-descriptive, parttheoretical and part research-based. What is burnout? Burnout is unique—it is not stress, depression

or anxiety. It has one key symptom: an extreme form of energy depletion where energy is hard to replenish. Methods that may work for stress and anxiety may not work. Solving burnout requires that you understand what makes it unique.

What can be done? We need to start with the individual –

why they are burnt out. Then we can progress to the job and then organisation. When looking at burnout, the time spent on leisure matters more than time spent at work. If burnt out, we often cancel leisure, so it is important to reinstate those leisure activities we enjoy. It is also important to look at pacing, stopping for 5-10 minutes every few hours, and having one day off a week, if possible. The best thing of all to do is to learn from people who are low in burnout even though faced with high work demands.

You talk about ‘introject’, can you explain what this is?

An introject is an idea, message or ‘should’ that you have internalised but it isn’t ‘you’. Nevertheless, this introject ‘runs you’. An introject is a psychological concept. You do not have to go to this level, this depth, to get out of burnout. You can, instead, read the quotations describing the different approaches of those who are high in burnout and those who are low. You can, with effort, adopt the approaches of the latter. This is how I became a low burnout person even though I work hard.

Another term you use is ‘enantiadromia’, what does this mean? This term is ancient but is used by Carl Jung. It means

you have been expressing only one side of yourself and this over-reliance is implicated in burnout too.

Some jobs immunise you against burnout and some do the opposite, can you explain more about this? A job will

immunise you against burnout if it makes psychological sense to you. If it doesn’t you will run around getting burnt out for seemingly no reason. It is the responsibility of managers and the organisation to have enough common sense and understanding of human beings to construct jobs in a way that makes sense to them. You also talk about the mobilisation of energy. Can you explain what this is? Mobilisation of energy is a natural

expression of energy that is frequently blocked by well-meaning managers. They focus excessively on goals, targets, action plans, minutes of meetings and so on. By doing this they miss the PRIOR need for motivation and mobilisation of people. You can’t sidestep the latter and get away with it.

How did you go about researching the book? There are several sources: my own story and how I got out of burnout; my PhD research as well as recent research in a mental health facility; my 15 years consultancy in London where I often came across burnout. What is next on the agenda for you? I have almost fi nished a book called Beyond Positive Psychology. This is about the four most useful ideas for living a life. Beyond that is another book on mobilising energy in organisations. Burnout and the Mobilisation of Energy by Annamaria Garden, Austin Macauley Publishers, $32.50. All About Acupuncture WORDS— JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES

“Acupuncture can offer a safe, drug-free treatment option,” says Rachel Wilson of Herne Bay-based Naissance Natural Health Clinic, acupuncture specialists whose focus is on women’s health, namely pregnancy and fertility. Health, Beauty & Fitness

50

“Many insurance companies will cover acupuncture and it is a modality funded by ACC.”

“It will often address the root cause, rather than looking to treat the symptoms. The body has an incredible ability to maintain homeostasis [self-regulation] and heal when given the opportunity to, by removing any imbalances. It can also offer a solution to problems that conventional medicine may not have been able to help.” Rachel, who has several decades’ experience as a midwife and registered nurse, admits that when she fi rst discovered acupuncture for musculoskeletal injuries her preconceptions of it “were limited to injury and pain management”. “It wasn’t until I became a midwife and I saw fi rst-hand how it could be used successfully during pregnancy for certain conditions and discomforts and in preparation for labour that I began to understand its scope was much greater” she continues. “I went on to have acupuncture with my fi rst pregnancy as I was planning a homebirth and wanted to do all I could to ensure as it was timely and normal. It’s a process called pre-birth acupuncture which you start at 36 weeks, like getting a warrant of fitness for labour. I was hooked and after baby number three I went on to retrain as an acupuncturist.” Pinpointing The Origins

Acupuncture—the process of inserting narrow needles into the skin at strategic points around the person—originated in China around 2,500 years ago. One theory is that the concept was inspired by flood control—as obstacles were cleared from riverbeds to improve the flow of waterways, so it was believed blockages could be cleared from the human body to improve the flow of energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”). And as riverbeds represent natural channels of the Earth, it is said the body harbours 14 such channels, or meridians, through which qi flows. According to Dr Igor Micunovic, President of the Association of Acupuncturists of Montenegro, Chinese holistic philosophy considers humanity, society, and nature as interconnected and “governed by the same laws” meaning that their disorders can therefore be “similarly managed”. It views the human body as a

landscape verses Western medicine that views the body as a machine. Last year, the paper Hiding in Plain Sight – Ancient Chinese Anatomy, published by the American Association for Anatomy, argued that though the Ancient Greeks are credited with mapping the human body, the Chinese likely beat them to it by about 500 years. Study co-author Vivien Shaw says that the discovery of a 2,000-year-old anatomical atlas created during the Han Dynasty “changes both the history of medicine and our understanding of the basis for acupuncture—a key branch of Chinese medicine”. Shaw says that there is an ever increasing body of evidencebased research that “supports the efficacy of acupuncture” for a variety of conditions, while last August, the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence released guidelines recommending the practice as a “fi rst line” treatment for chronic pain. Journey To The West

“Acupuncture is defi nitely more widely accepted,” says Rachel. “In New Zealand, many insurance companies will cover acupuncture and it is a modality funded by ACC. I get referrals from midwives, physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, doctors, nutritionists, and naturopaths. Women are incredibly resourceful, they are researchers, networkers and if pregnant or wanting to be pregnant, very determined to give themselves and their baby the best possible chance. They will explore many natural options and will land upon acupuncture. It is traditional, natural, and has stood the test of time—and now has compelling research to back it up.” Known as zhenjiu in Chinese (with zhen meaning needle, and jiu relating to a type of heat therapy), the word ‘acupuncture’ fi rst appeared in Europe in the late 17th century, taken from the Latin acus (needle), and punctum (to puncture, or pierce), having been introduced courtesy of Jesuit missionaries returning from the East. Though it remained somewhat of an alternative treatment for centuries, acupuncture gradually

infi ltrated Western mainstream medicine and in 1950 French scholar George Soulié de Morant was nominated for the Nobel Prize in physiology for his work in the practice. Nine years later, the UK’s Medical Acupuncture Society was established and in 1979, the World Health Organization recognised acupuncture as a clinical practice. However, misconceptions remain.

“So often when I am treating clients, it is from a recommendation of a friend.”

“I wish more people knew about how this ancient, time-tested medicine can be helpful for so much more than just painful conditions,” says Rachel. “It can help with the likes of allergic rhinitis, menstrual cramps, nausea from early pregnancy or chemotherapy, fertility struggles, the turning of a breech baby, assistance with smoking cessation and much more. Many harbour the same misconceptions around the practice that I had. So often when I am treating clients, it is from a recommendation of a friend, and the client explains that they never would have considered acupuncture for the very reason they visit.” Having had several acupuncture sessions in the past, this writer can attest to the fact that the needles often enter with no sensation, and even when something is felt, it’s barely more than a faint, fleeting scratch (followed in my case by some seriously deep slumbering on the table). But a fear of needles, understandably is one of the main reasons for people’s reluctance to take the plunge. “The width of an acupuncture needle is very thin, only a quarter of a millimetre – and often even half that size again,” says Rachel. “It is closer to the size of a human hair than to the size if an injection needle, and with a skilled and understanding practitioner you will be surprised how it just doesn’t seem to be a problem.”

SMOOT HER MORE CONFIDENT YOU! Finesse Face and Body Clinic is proud to be the first truSculpt iD provider in New Zealand, as part of an exclusive partnership with Cutera.

TruSculpt iD is the latest technology available to permanently and noninvasively remove body fat. “We have been leaders in non-invasive cellulite and body contouring treatments in Auckland for 19 years,” says Sue Crake, owner of the Remuera salon. How does truSculpt iD work? truSculpt iD uses a unique form of monopolar radio frequency energy that penetrates evenly and deeply and is able to treat the entire fat pad — from skin to muscle. Given each patient’s unique biological complex, the truSculpt iD is able to adjust the energy output to ensure the most effective treatment for each person. Realtime temperature control and monitoring sensors ensure the therapeutic temperature level is reached in the fat, while maintaining a skin temperature of 3-4°C cooler.

How is treatment performed? An initial evaluation is performed to frame the desired treatment areas. A total of six hand pieces may be used to target an area that is larger than three CoolSculpt cool max applicators (approximately 12 SculpSure applicators). Each hand piece is gently applied using a piece of double-sided tape. A cummerbund is then wrapped around the body, ensuring full contact. Patients experience mild heat, with an overall high level of comfort during the 15-minute session.

Painless Suitable for males and females Tightens the skin by remodelling collagen Amazing results — some patients have reported over 35% reduction in fact (***measured by ultrasound in clinical trials) Treats ALL areas including the abdomen, love handles, bra rolls, chin, thighs, arms and calves

How many treatments will I need? Ninety-five percent of patients will only require one treatment per area! We can treat as many as three areas in a single 15-minute session!

Is the treatment painful? No! Patients report the treatment feels like a warm stone massage. Some feel the heat in the first minute to be a bit intense but then adjust to the treatment.

How long before I see my results? Results such as firming, improved skin tone and texture, and some reduction, will be noticeable immediately; however, fat cells are removed over a period of time and maximum results will be achieved at 12 weeks. There's an average of 24 percent fat reduction on a treated area, in one treatment.

HOKA

Photography: David James, @marlborough_lights for Good As Gold, goodasgoldshop.com

HOKA interviews Verve co-editor Jude, who has just come out of her plaster and moonboot after a fractured metacarpal and has been wearing HOKA shoes ever since. Why did you choose HOKA? I fractured my metatarsal and was concerned that I needed to fi nd a shoe that would support my recovery. Given your situation how comfortable did you find the shoe?

The HOKA shoe was recommended to me by Shoe Clinic who had said that they believed this was the best shoe for me to help my support and balance. It was a the perfect shoe for my recovery.

What was appealing to you about the shoe? I love these shoes because a lot of the shoes that are good for walking and are supportive are multi-coloured—this shoe is monotone and appealed. It felt light and soft when walking in them. I felt very supported. They offer you a rock and roll motion which have maximum cushioning and are perfect for running, hiking and walking.

Hoka One One Half Page Verve August.pdf 1 28/07/2021 8:37:08 am

What’s your conclusion? Whether you are recovering from an injury or just after a comfortable well-designed shoe with great support I would highly recommend these. Don’t worry if you are an amateur walker or someone more serious about running, these shoes are worth investigating.

OneMan: Quality Grooming Products for Modern Men

Mum should get what Mum wants this Father’s Day. (Dads, look away now.) Lets face it, isn't it simply a case of wanting your man to look his best, and be the best, that he can possibly be? Dad grooming can and should be aspirational, like the way famous dads get it done. (Think international footballers and celebrities.) Adding a few steps like a moisturiser, a dedicated conditioner, and maybe even a under-eye cream to his daily routine can honestly work wonders in just a few weeks. A Fathers Day gift from One Man’s amazing stable of men's grooming products is the perfect way to show your man, the father of your children, that you really do care. Which, to spell it out, is the whole point of having Father’s Day. Face facts. Men are different from women. Taken purely at face value that sounds pretty damn obvious, but, to get literally and specifically ‘in your face’, men and women have quite different facial needs. Diving in deep here, we can talk hormones and stuff and get scientific but, in the true spirit of manliness we'll focus on the superficial. To cut to the chase, men need skin care products that are manly specific and designed and formulated specifically for manskin maintenance. It's time for you to man him up and perhaps he'll stop stealing your grooming stuff!

Elstree Pharmacy Professional pharmacists serving the Glen Innes community. Come and see us for fantastic gifts for all ages, all of your family’s health needs and excellent advice. So whether it's for this Father’s Day or simply the next time you’re on the hunt to upgrade his skincare regime, rest assured there are purpose built products designed and created just for men. Which reminds me, I wonder what I can give my dad this Father’s Day. Fatboy Styling Cream – A weightless hold hybrid gel that works as a pre-styler and helps thicken hair. Lockhart’s Water Based Goon Grease –Strong, slick, washes out of the hair in one go with just water, and your hair won’t feel dried out afterwards. Arcadian Banana Face Wash – This luxurious, creamy formula was designed to get the day’s dirt away without stripping the face of any healthy oils that keep your skin feeling soft and flake free. Baxter Under Eye Cream – Firms, nourishes and protects the delicate skin around the eyes. Minimises puffiness and dark circles as it smoothes and tones.

In Bloom

There’s nothing more exciting than pregnancy and parenthood, but also few things more daunting—especially the first time round! We spoke to some experts about how to make the ride smoother...

Breastfeeding La Leche League NZ

Breastfeeding is possibly the most magical thing you will ever do (after growing your baby for 40 weeks!). Right before

your eyes, you will see your child growing from a helpless newborn into a confident, walking, talking, competent little person who grows independently into adulthood and for the fi rst six months, does this all on your breast milk alone.

Breastfeeding is not just a meal delivery service, it provides a platform for your baby to develop to their greatest physiological potential. As well as providing the opportunity

for attachment and bonding to Mum (attachment to a principle caregiver is vital for normal development), breastfeeding promotes normal jaw and teeth placement (less orthodontia bills in the future!); provides your baby with an active immune system that protects them from illness (until they are able to develop their own); and avoids obesity by teaching your baby to heed their satiety controls (when they are full they stop eating, even once they are having other foods).

The physical benefits of breastfeeding are not confined to babies. By breastfeeding your baby you get a metabolic

reset after the physical strains of pregnancy, labour and birth. The advantages of breastfeeding are duration related, so the longer you breastfeed (you can add up several children to get a total) the healthier you will be over the long term. The recognised gains to mothers are less breast and ovarian cancers,

In Bloom

lowered blood pressure, less risk of osteoporosis and if you have gestational diabetes in pregnancy, your risk of developing diabetes later in life is 50% less if you breastfeed your baby. The most important thing about breastfeeding though is about forming the sort of relationship with your baby that will take you through those teen years (when you can start to wonder which alien is inhabiting your child). The nurturing, responsive, respectful relationship you form with your baby by meeting their needs through breastfeeding easily translates into interactions that meet your child’s needs, while guiding them into adulthood. Robin Jones is the mother of three adult children and has been a La Leche League Leader since 1983. Recently retired as a core midwife and DHB antenatal educator at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim, she strongly believes that women have a right to make their baby feeding decisions based on their own values, experiences and capabilities. She supports women by providing information, education and encouragement to make whatever decisions they find works for them and their family. lalecheleague.org.nz

Conversation with Victoria Cranwell On the floor at EGG for six years. EGGMATERNITY.COM

Victoria, previously an early childhood educator, has been on the floor at maternity brand, EGG, for six years and says that “A big part of the passion for my role is to create a gentle atmosphere that allows clients to understand the changes in their bodies are not just physical but holistic, and to relax and embrace their new shape.” Top tips to approaching pregnancy dressing in the second and third trimesters? Invest in key pieces that will extend the

life of your existing wardrobe. A great pant and jean. An outfit for special occasions that is able to be dressed up or down. A top or dress with cleverly designed nursing features. Most popular baby shower gifts? There are many choices for

new families. What we have observed is most gifts are for the first three months. An EGG gift voucher allows for the family to make choices a little further down the track—in-store and online. Tips on dressing postpartum? Postpartum is a very different

time for all, as each pregnancy journey is different and our bodies respond to this time in its own way. Holistically, be gentle with yourself. Love your body as much as your baby does and any changes will happen in their own time.

What sort of bag do you suggest for Mums looking for a low key bag to hold all baby’s arsenal, but can’t get herself

to purchase a ‘nappy bag’ per se? The 'Baby Bag you choose will be with you for three years so explore the possibilities and choose one you love. There are many smart options, with designs to suit the all the amazing parent combinations that created for each families individual needs. All in a baby bag! When choosing a baby carrier, what should new parents look for? We believe they are an invaluable addition as Dad can

carry bubba and the closeness creates a special bond. Ensure it has a no 'hip stretch' design. If clients are comfortable the wrap sling is another wonderful way to be close with bubba.

Pretty maternity bras are rare as unicorns. What would you suggest when it comes to choosing a bra that is gorgeous, comfortable and works with baby? Above all this is where

comfort is paramount. At EGG we have a stunning selection of styles that we can fit as early as four months and that will continue the journey with style and comfort.

Any tips on how to keep healthy once baby is home? We have been doing this for centuries. Again be gentle with yourself. One day at a time and sometimes minute by minute. Being present in the moment and focusing on creating your rhythm together and your relationships with each other. You and your family are unique. Believe in yourself. Breathe.

Fertility Tips For Your Man It takes two to make a baby, and with so much focus on women, we decided to fi nd out what men can do to help improve chances of conceiving. Dr Guy Gudex , medical director from Auckland fertility clinic Repromed, answered the call!

Can men really impact the chance of pregnancy? Absolutely.

It takes around three months for sperm to mature—making positive changes can make all the difference to most men’s sperm quality. Prioritising sperm health during this period is important – swap tight underpants for boxers, avoid hot spas and baths, keep your laptop off your lap, no mobile phones in trouser pocket, be careful with gym supplements to make sure testosterone or steroids are not ingested, and avoid handling toxic chemicals. It all helps.

What changes would you suggest to men? Health changes proven to influence or enhance the chances of pregnancy include:

· Focussing on a healthy, balanced diet increases intake of sperm-boosting antioxidants, think: berries, green leafy vegetables, avocados, nuts, olive oil, and salmon.. · Tracking weight—being within a ‘normal’ range for your height optimises chances of success. Find a BMI calculator on Google. · Slow down—stress affects the hormone levels required for conception. · Limit caffeine to one cup a day, improving your ability to absorb iron—key for healthy conception. · Reduce alcohol—studies have shown its effects are significant in damaging sperm. · Quit smoking, it harms sperm, irregulates hormones and damages DNA. Quitting will increase your chances of conception by 40%. · Exercise daily.

In Bloom

Is there a way of checking men’s fertility health? If having

trouble conceiving, the fi rst step is to test sperm health. A sperm test can be done with an over-the-counter test like SwimCount, by a local Labtest referred by your GP, or through self-referral to Repromed for a detailed analysis. By the way, the fi rst step for females is to have a simple blood test called an ‘AMH test’ which checks egg reserve levels.

Any further advice? We often hear from men that they didn’t realise how much age impacts women’s fertility. We always suggest planning for the number of children you want—which may mean starting your family sooner rather than later—to ensure you’re not cut short by the effects of age on fertility. If you haven’t fallen pregnant naturally after trying for a year, it’s an indication you may need help. Repromed is based in Remuera, Auckland and offers private and public funded fertility treatment for all. They offer new clients a free 15-minute phone consultation with a fertility doctor. Esse

Dismayed at the quality of garments that would come apart after a few turns in the wash, Alicia Tsi left her full-time job to do what she loves best—design great garments. What has been the biggest challenge you have faced?

Balancing all of the aspects of our conscious little business; our impact on the planet; how we can give back to nature; and support our amazing community while still growing the business and ensuring that we are profitable. Tell us about the brand name. The name Esse is derived from

medieval Latin, which means 'existence' or 'to be'. It is a word that invites us to look inwards, to be aware and discerning. This relates to everything we do at Esse — creating considered pieces and being cognizant of everyone the brand touches.

What inspires your design aesthetic? I’m a big lover of nature

and I try to spend lots of time outdoors. New Zealand’s great outdoors have influenced my aesthetic in many ways—from the soothing colour palette inspired by the earthy hues of nature to the functional details of each garment.

What kind of environment have you aimed to create with your first permanent retail space? We wanted to create a

little sanctuary and bring nature in, all while treading lightly on the environment. We worked hard to salvage, upcycle and forage pieces for our store—like our centrepiece—a beautiful marble table top, which was an offcut from a local kitchen benchtop supplier.

Esse is available online at essethelabel.co.nz and at Bloc— 20 Normanby Rd, Mt Eden.

What do you love most about your new collection of elevated basics, Foundations? We’ve managed to merge more

tailored silhouettes with our choice of jersey cotton (that feels extremely plush) so the pieces look very polished while still being extremely versatile and easy to care for.

In Love with Italy

High in the rolling, fog-clad hills of Umbria, Italy, lies a picturesque estate swathed in forest and dotted with stone farmhouses, their faded terracotta roofs puncturing the sea of green that surrounds them.

In a vision that is quintessentially Italian, simple dirt roads creep through the valleys and crawl along ridges flanked by the narrow spears of cypress. At the heart of the estate lies a 10th-century castle, once in ruin but now painstakingly and lovingly restored and reimagined as a luxury hotel: Hotel Castello di Reschio. The Castello owes its current form to the labour and largesse of the aristocratic Count Antonio Bolza, who purchased the estate with his wife the Countess in 1984, and their son Benedikt, who returned in 1999 after practising as an architect in London. Taking up residence on the rundown property with his wife Donna Nencia and their five children, it was Benedikt who dreamed, designed and directed the restoration of the Castello, outfitting it with beds, furniture and lighting of his own creation. Over the next 15 years, the Bolza family restored the Castello and its neighbouring farmhouses, reclaimed and rewilded the surrounding meadows and forest, and transformed the once unkempt estate into a truly inimitable taste of Italian luxury. At the heart of Reschio, the Castello boasts 36 rooms and suites spread throughout the building proper and the neighbouring vestry, costing from $1,300 per night for a room, up to $4,200 for the sprawling Tower Suite. While eye-wateringly expensive, a stay at Castello di Reschio is an experience in restrained sophistication. There are no gilt mirrors or glittering chandeliers

within the castle’s walls—instead, guests are accommodated in rustic comfort reflective of the hotel’s ancient roots. Rooms feature exposed wooden beams, soft lime washed walls and terracotta brick floors bedecked with simple rugs. The colour palette is neutral and relaxed, allowing sunlight to drift around the room and highlight the rich accents of Benedikt Bonza’s lamps and furnishings, creating a space that is both airy and cozy, spare yet sumptuous. As with any high-end establishment, guests at the Castello can expect more than just a comfortable bed with a nice view, with two restaurants, three bars, a ‘gift shop’—housing such souvenirs as Venetian silk slippers and handmade sun hats from Florence—and wine cellar on site. The estate’s exquisite natural produce takes centre stage at Ristorante Al Castello and Alle Scuderie, as the chefs create simple, elegant and showstopping organic dishes from the larder outside their door. Bar Centrale is located within Ristorante Alle Scuderie, and together the two channel Benedikt Bonza’s vision of hospitality through an art deco lens, the soaring ceilings of the restaurant made intimate by plush, pistachio coloured leather chairs and the soft glow of brass lamps hanging above the bar. Enter the Palm Court however and you will find intimacy replaced by mystery as you step back into a Victorian era conservatory of glass and wrought iron, lushly appointed with velvet sofas and throne like wicker armchairs, and shaded by the drowsy limbs of tropical plants.

Hotel Castello di Reschio Continued...

All of this is to say nothing of the dozens of other amenities and activities available during a stay at Reschio. When guests grow tired of wining and dining they can roam the estate on a truffle hunting expedition, forage for medicinal herbs with the Bonza matriarch Donna Nencia, or grab the binoculars and watch roe deer and wild boar wander through the forest. From the mirror-like disk of the pool glittering by the old watchtower to the subterranean Roman baths and day spa nestled in the building’s foundations, Hotel Castello di Reschio is equipped for a princely stay—but step outside the castle walls and guests will be reminded of their place in a landscape and way of life that has existed for centuries to now be shared with the world, courtesy of Count Bonza.

Forte Forte FORTE-FORTE.COM WORDS — BELLA SAMPSON

In English, Forte means ‘a thing at which someone excels’, in Italian, it means ‘strong’. When it comes to the fashion brand ‘ Forte Forte’, and their latest boutique store, found in Rome, both meanings are true.

Ryan’s The Duchess. I was delighted to fi nd her following them on Instagram. Forte Forte are bold, yet classic and have great additions to combine with other pieces in your wardrobe.

The store’s design, the work of brand co-founder Giada Forte and creative director Robert Vattiliana, is itself a piece of art. The duo wanted the interior to contrast with the building’s traditional cream stone exterior, stating that in Rome, “contrast is a form of harmony”.

The jersey dust coat with sparkles is a fi ne example of the brand’s showiness. The longline coat has an eye-catching metallic fibre detail outside, which catches the light and accentuates its springtime shimmer. The fabric is light and billowy, draping over a tighter outfit with ease while adding a casual but put together flare.

For contrast, they’ve used other natural materials to create and incorporate a complementary yet standout style for the interior. Stunning marbled onyx floor, doors and panels adorn most of the boutique. White, clean lighting highlights the hues found in the ancient gemstone. Fitting rooms are padded in a plush, pale green velvet and there are large green plants around, to bring a fresh living element. Lengthy clothing racks are brass, as are the shelves and hangars. Some brass uniform panels accentuate the golden hue streaks found in the onyx.

The ‘gelsomina’ print satin trousers have a liquid-like drape, inspired by pyjamas and the current wider leg style. The subtle-coloured checked trousers feature delicate lily applique and a fitted waist. Or their butter soft lace-up calfskin ankle boots, which have a chic vintage vibe. The slight balloon sleeve, light flare cuffs, fi ne detail patterns, poplin buttons and cord waist tie belt on this plumentis cotton shirt, make for an airily romantic, retro aesthetic. Daring to be dressed up or down with your wardrobe.

Forte Forte is the dream store for anyone wanting to add a little fun to their wardrobe, whilst considering timeless patterns, contemporary trends and innovative fabric choices. Their selection felt as if I was wandering through celebrity stylist Jennifer Michalski-Bray’s imagination, who’s sought after taste can be seen in the original Gossip Girl and Katherine

Like the store’s design, there’s no limit to the fashion of Forte Forte. Sparkles, dreamy leather, tailoring, silk, satin, cashmere, wool, linen, and such blend seamlessly into the story of this brand. As designer John Galliano once said, “the joy of dressing is an art”, which is a thing which Forte excels in providing.

Via Giovan Battista Zannoni hosts many different stalls and boutiques down its bustling street. The place to go for worldrenowned Florentine leather goods. Dozens of stores sell gorgeous bags, jackets and quality accessories guaranteed to stand the test of time, and garner compliments.

Via Del Corso, Rome

Via Mazzini, Verona

The spacious Via Del Corso is a must-see shopping street, hosting a mixture of unique boutiques, luxury brands and global stores. Although Milan is often thought of as the pinnacle of Italian fashion, Via Del Corso is touted as next in line for the throne. A little bit of everything, including the unexpected, can be found here, which explains the heavy foot traffic. Galleria Sordi, a regal looking shopping complex with stunning stainedglass ceilings is a must also, housing bag stores like Coccinelle, stylish stationery outlets, and an old map boutique.

The busy thoroughfare connects the two largest squares, Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe, offering plenty of fashionable boutiques and shops—a nice balance of independent and larger chains. The beautiful street is perfect for fi nding one-of-a-kind wardrobe treasures or everyday essential pieces. It’s also worth a visit just to marvel the fairytale like street that feature views of turrets and towers, shutters across windows, and wrought iron balconies. Via Monte Napenapoleone, Milan

Portofino

Portofino is the lavish Italian Riviera fishing village that’s beloved by tourists, celebrities, royalty and its 500 locals. The sun-soaked seaside town hosts incredible views, charming architecture and a wide range of shopping and dining opportunities. Cobbled, maze-like streets, begging to be explored, cradling numerous luxurious boutiques—the village is one of the few areas in Italy where fine bobbin lace garments can still be found. It also houses the historic shoe boutique Mingo Portofino and the original Spinnaker boutique store, listed by the Chamber of Fashion as one of the best stores in Italy.

In the capital of Italian fashion sits the stunning Via Monte Napoleone, is home to prestigious names like Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace, as well as a selection of museums. Beautiful interiors are tied together by sparkling streetlights swinging between the pale classic stone buildings, with well-manicured greenery placed thoughtfully around.

Conceria Guidi Rosselini

WORDS — NICK AINGE-ROY IMAGES FROM INN7

In a high output, low quality consumer world, the distinction of ‘Made in Italy’ has always been a hallmark of quality. The association is one of precision and care, of generational skills masterfully and laboriously applied in the pursuit of ultimate luxury.

In Love with Italy

“The result would become Guidi’s signature: shoes that were softened, worn, and aged to a degree that matched their traditional origins”

Normally you would expect to see these words stamped on the sole of a Ferragamo stiletto, or stitched into the lining of a Zegna suit—all the usual suspects, in other words. But there has for some time now been a wave of Italian producers for whom the words ‘Made in Italy’ signify not glitter and buttonholes, but handiwork and a rugged almost industrial product. Guidi is one of these producers.

Founded in 1896 by Guido Guidi, Giovanni Rosselini and Gino Ulivo, the company was fi rst established as a tannery, a capacity in which it operated quietly for the next century, quietly employing traditional, centuries old processes that produced skins of an unmatched quality—something that would lead to Guidi becoming beloved by high end brands and artisans such as Prada, Rick Owens and Carol Christian Poell. Nowadays, the company is known more for their imposing boots and eyecatching bags than the luxurious leathers they are crafted from, a shift in the company’s approach that began in 2003 under Ruggero Guidi. While running the family business, Ruggero began to collect old hiking boots and workers shoes, drawn to them as historical objects imbued with a sense of craftsmanship that was increasingly rare to fi nd. Inspired by the pieces in his collection, Ruggero set out to recreate them using leather from his tannery, eventually showing them to Alessia Righi Amante, a former employee of cult label Carpe Diem who at that time was running a showroom in Paris. Amante was impressed, but disliked the sheen of newness that Guidi’s shoes carried, and suggested he wash them in the tanning drums at his factory. The result would become Guidi’s signature: shoes that were softened, worn, and aged to a degree that matched their traditional origins.

More than 15 years later, Guidi has grabbed the attention of a discerning fashion crowd, cultivating customers around the world who are drawn to the brand’s unique shapes, experimental colours and peerless craftsmanship. Their shoes— which now sell thousands of pairs each year—continue to be made in-house, travelling just 10 minutes down the road to be assembled by a dozen-strong team of artisans in the employ of Paolo Rugiati, an old friend of the Guidi family, before returning to the tannery for dyeing and fi nishing. Another crucial Guidi signature, object dyeing is something of a buzzword in the artisanal fashion scene, and involves dyeing the shoes in their fi nal form: soles, zips and all. Object dyeing is time consuming and unpredictable, often yielding various shades of colour within the item depending on the raw materials used—something that would never fly in a run of the mill retail product, but which is precisely the appeal of a Guidi boot, and part of what commands their premium price. At $2,000 a pair, you might wonder how much of a market there even is for such a product, and that’s before you get into the fact that what Guidi makes is not easy and approachable, but aggressive and uncompromising in its aesthetic. The reality is that these aren’t shoes for everyone, and those that follow the brand do so because, like generations of the Guidi family, they believe in craftsmanship, quality, and the essence of what it means to be Made in Italy.

Tell our readers about yourself? My wife Katie and I opened Toret in December 2020. It was a project we’ve been working for many years, brainstorming ideas with the ultimate aim to create an authentic Italian experience using local and seasonal products.

Tell us about the menu? We change menu roughly every two months, many dishes come and go quickly—as previously mentioned, it’s about what the farmers around are growing and what is in season.

Were you born in New Zealand? I was born in Torino in the northwest of Italy and spent most of my life there. I moved to New Zealand firstly back in 2012 for a year, then in 2014 for good.

Italian food is based on the seasonality of the produce and the land where you’re from. You can’t recreate a traditional Italian meal living in New Zealand without the same quality products. We wanted to keep the authenticity while serving what farmers around us grow—locally sourced meat and fish, cooked the right way, following Italian recipes and techniques. good burger to be honest! I’m a fan of most styles of cooking, they all have their particularities and I love how two different cuisines from the other side of the world can have similar techniques but completely different outcomes of flavour.

What’s your favourite dish on the Toret menu? Our pastas are really good and defi nitely my favourites. Our signature dish is tortelloni with kumara and goats’ cheese, tossed in burnt butter and sage and topped with toasted hazelnut. I have a pretty strong sweet tooth and one dessert I really like at the moment is a crostata with Nashi pears from Taranaki and nuts from a local farm.

What inspired these dishes? Tortelloni—or tortellini—is a classic pasta preparation, versatile and delicious. The filling with kumara comes obviously from living in New Zealand, so a good mix of both culture and product. For the crostata, it was easy— local nuts and local pears in season, easy as one, two, three!

Like A Big Pizza Pie, That’s A Bargain

WORDS— JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES

Founded in the late 1300s, the town of Mussomeli, home to around 11,000 souls, sits high in the hills of central Sicily, around an hour from the island’s southern coast. In Love with Italy

“One of the ideas to revitalize these places is this offer to attract international clients to buy, invest and spend their holidays there.”

Exploring the series of enchanting, narrow streets and laneways leads to hidden photogenic sites such as ancient stone churches replete with sacred artworks, a clock tower, and, most famously, the Manfredonico Chiaramontano Castle—known as Mussomeli Castle—which rises proudly from atop a massive rocky monolith. From a distance, the dense, medieval terracotta architecture appears to be almost tumbling down its hillside. It’s a region renown for its cheese, its wine, its ricotta, and its olive oil. According to the website realtor.com, houses on the island—the largest in the Mediterranean—typically range from $400,000 to $4 million, but incredibly Mussomeli is selling homes for less than the price of a coffee: one euro to be exact, which is just shy of two New Zealand dollars. “In the last 40 years people, especially young people, left the countryside to fi nd work in bigger cities, and those small villages like Mussomeli became abandoned all over Italy,” Stefan Neuhaus, an expert in Italian real estate, tells CNBC. “One of the ideas to revitalize these places is this offer to attract international clients to buy, invest and spend their holidays there.”

After laying down a refundable security deposit of around $8,500, buyers must agree to renovate their homes, at a cost of $170 to $1,299 per square metre. Homes advertised range from 11 to 190 square metres, meaning the largest house would cost around $226,000 to fi x up—a steal when compared to Auckland prices! Renovations must begin within a year of purchase and be completed within three years otherwise run the risk of forfeit. Buyers must also agree to keep the original façade of their new home and spend a certain amount of time each year there. McCubbin says that potential investors must be prepared to put in the hard yards in order to view as many properties as they can—he viewed more than 20 before settling on one—and that it’s not something that can be done remotely. But, he tells Ladbible, he’s never looked back. Though the people of Sicily, he says, may have struggled for such a long time, in Mussomeli “there’s a great sense of community”. Find out more at case1euro.it.

The project, called ‘Case 1 Euro’, was established by the Municipality of Mussomeli and is being welcomed by the locals. “They know that we are helping to breathe life back into this town,” says Danny McCubbin, a 56-year-old Australian digital consultant, who made the move before the Brexit restrictions took hold, having lived in London for the best part of two decades. Having been sent numerous articles by friends from around the world, he wanted to “fi nd out if it really was too good to be true”. As it turns out, it wasn’t—though there are some stipulations.

Behind Closed Doors She’s also the talent behind a number of our international resorts from COMO Point Yamu in Phuket where her bold and innovative designs accent the clifftop resort, to the art deco interiors of COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach in Florida. We catch up with Paola from Milan as she spills the secrets to finding inspiration, making design decisions, and unleashing creativity… What’s your advice for budding home designers? Look around with new eyes, as if in a new destination. Try something different — if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t matter. Nothing’s permanent. Natural colours or bright and bold? White environments

always calm me. I like colour in furniture and a splash on the walls. Don’t think intellectually when choosing colour: pick freely. Be sure the colour you go for is sympathetic with your feelings. Don’t fear mistakes, you can always repaint!

What one décor item should we all have? Nothing decorative

is essential. Choose only what resonates with you.

Are bigger artworks always better? I choose artwork when

it’s breathtaking, when it’s love at fi rst sight—otherwise, why would I want it on my walls? Artwork should make you feel joy, whatever its size.

AUTHENTIC ITALIAN, THIS IS PUGLIA 09 558 2631 · pugliarestaurant.nz 509 New North Road, Kingsland Photo Credit — Stuart Marshall Photography

Italian designer Paola Navone, one of COMO’s greatest inspirations, has worked with luxury brands like Armani and Swarovski.

Should we go green? Plants and flowers give life living

spaces—add plenty! And remember they are living things and deserve special care.

Do you believe ‘tidy room, tidy mind’? The opposite. If your

mind is tidy, you can live in mess. If you can see through your own clutter, it’s no longer clutter.

How should we find inspiration? Inspiration is everywhere — the book you’re reading, a late-night movie, a drawer you’ve not opened for a long time. Look and you’ll be inspired. Does light win over darkness? Light always wins. It gives energy and creates dream. Add plenty to your living spaces. Finally, tips for greater creativity? Experiment and have

fun. One day, cover everything with white fabric and enjoy the calmness. The next day, repaint a piece of old furniture with a colour you’ve always wanted to try. Spend another day focused on your bathroom, decorating in a way that makes you smile. Try new things, don’t be shy. It’s your house, they’re your rules.

Making Bottles Pop! WORDS—ANGIE ATKINSON, THE WINE WRITER

Prosecco is like a pop princess, bubbly,

pretty, a little bit sweet and, so much fun! Oh, and if you’re not too keen on one, there’s hundreds of others out there so you’re bound to find a match. Made with a grape variety called glera and hailing from northeast Italy, prosecco is produced using the tank (also called charmat) method, where the base wine goes through secondary fermentation in-tank , not in-bottle like

the champagne method, before bottling. Generally made in an easy-drinking, off-dry style, but there are more serious versions available. Only a year ago the Prosecco DOC Consortium approved the production of prosecco rosé, made by adding pinot noir to the base wine. While not everyone was happy about it at the time, the people have spoken, and it has been a huge success. Check it out and pop some prosecco to fight off those winter blues!

Small and persistent bubbles, a fun, off dry wine that is perfect for afternoon sipping, starting off an evening or matched with platters, chicken salads or fish tacos. BRILLA! Prosecco DOC Rosé Fine Wine Delivery Company, $19.99

The palest of pale pink, the wine packaging is about as bling as you can get! The hashtag #drinkpink was invented for a wine like this. Tiny bubbles rise to the surface and bring the aromas of red apple, citrus and cherry. 87

Bandini Prosecco Extra Dry DOC Black Market, $19.99

She’s a fi zzy one! A vigorous bead with flavours and aromas of white peach, lemon, crunchy apple and white blossom. A slight creaminess to the palate adds weight and a light, salty mineral note on the fi nish making this a very food friendly wine. Drink on its own or match with ceviche, scallops or dishes with a bit of spice. Borga Prosecco Caro’s , $24.99

A beautiful example of prosecco, lovely fruit concentration and lifted floral aromas with touches of citrus and stone fruit. Perfectly formed little bubbles dance on your tongue and delight the tastebuds with flavours of nectarine, mandarin and a bright acidity on the fi nish.

Panzanella

Typical of Tuscan cuisine and, more generally of central Italy, panzanella is a rustic dish based on stale bread soaked in water, tomatoes, and olive oil. It is peasant dish that belongs to the farming traditions and is perfect in summer as it doesn’t need to be cooked and it can also be prepared in advance. It is, in fact, better eaten a few hours after preparation, as the bread soaks up the juices of the tomatoes and the oil. For a richer taste, you can add fi nely sliced raw onion and black olives.

Serves: 4 Preparation Time: 10 Minutes

Ingredients

Method

8 slices home-made or store-bought rustic white bread, crusts removed 10–15 basil leaves, torn extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling 4 fi rm red tomatoes, peeled and diced salt and freshly ground black pepper

Tear the bread into pieces and soak in cold water for a few minutes, then squeeze out and put it into a salad bowl. Season with salt and pepper, scatter over the basil, and drizzle generously with oil. Toss the bread with two forks so that it crumbles, then add the diced tomatoes.

Chicken with Lemon

Pollo Al Limone

White meat and citrus fruit is a classic combination—in this recipe, delicate chicken meat is enlivened by the fresh, lively aroma of lemon. Always use unwaxed, organic lemons. The cooking time for chicken depends on the age of the bird, but also on how it has been farmed and how active it has been during its life. Always make sure that chicken is thoroughly cooked, otherwise it will be dangerous to eat—check if the meat is fully cooked by inserting a skewer into the fattest part of the leg to see if the juices run clear. To give your chicken a crispy, golden skin, increase the oven temperature for the fi nal minutes of cooking, taking care not to dry the meat out.

Serves: 4 Preparation Time: 30 Minutes

Cooking Time: 1¼ Hours

Ingredients

Method

1 chicken 1 lemon, halved 2 tablespoons/25g butter 1 garlic clove, peeled 2 tablespoons olive oil juice of 1 lemon, strained 1 fresh flat-leaf parsley sprig, chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4.

Extracted from The Silver Spoon Classic published by Phaidon

Gently rub the chicken cavity with one of the lemon halves, then slice the remaining half. Stuff the cavity with the lemon slices, half the butter, and the garlic. Place the chicken in a roasting pan (tin) with the olive oil and remaining butter, season with salt and pepper, and roast in the oven for 35 minutes. Sprinkle the lemon juice over the chicken, return to the oven, and roast for another 40 minutes, until tender and cooked through. Cut the back and breast of the chicken into four pieces, pull off the wings and legs, and place the meat in a warmed serving dish. Sprinkle with the parsley and serve.

Roasted Tomatoes with Balsamic Vinegar Pomodori All’aceto Balsamico In Forno

The combination of balsamic vinegar and thyme will give the tomatoes a delicious sweet and sour taste. It is now very easy to find balsamic vinegar in any supermarket or food shop and, as there are very few ingredients, make sure that you make this dish when tomatoes are in season, ripe, and not full of water. The tomatoes can be served both warm and cold and are the perfect accompaniment for simple broiled (grilled) fish and meat.

Serves: 4 Preparation Time: 15 Minutes

Cooking Time: 1¼ hours

Ingredients

Method

4 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar 8 tomatoes, halved 1 thyme sprig salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4. Brush an ovenproof roasting dish or pan (tin) with oil. Whisk together the oil and vinegar in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Put the tomatoes into the prepared dish in a single layer, brush the oil and vinegar mixture over them, and sprinkle with the thyme leaves.

Extracted from The Silver Spoon Classic published by Phaidon

Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 110°C/ Gas Mark 1/4 and bake for at least another 1 hour. Remove from the oven, transfer the tomatoes to a serving dish, and serve either hot or cold.

In the large, open living space, on the far side of a double-sided fi replace, the dining area and kitchen flow into each other. “The dining table we designed and built ourselves,” says Xavier. He adds, however, that designing chairs is “an art in itself”, so he and Damien found secondhand chairs rather than attempting his own design, mixing two sets from around the 70s. They have all been reupholstered in the same fabric. All the cabinetry was made by a local joiner more used to working with melamine kitchen cabinets, but Xavier and Damien convinced him to build their cabinet using rough planks they spotted in his workshop. Friends of the Huyberechts family, Darryn and Kellé, prepare lunch at the kitchen island in some images. At the centre of the house is a sunken dome, lit only by a skylight (which is flush with the grass roof). The dome has been built using earth bags fi lled with soil on site and stacked to create a dome. “It’s very fast, it’s economical and super-strong,” says Xavier. To the mud and straw plaster fi nish, he’s added a handmade Swedish paint, made with a mixture flour, water and a little bit of soil for colour. “It’s quite a nice place to siesta or for the kids to play or listen to music,” says Xavier.

Future-Proof Your Kitchen Think about the long term—your new kitchen should be designed to outlive current fads and trends, and built to withstand the rigours of family life.

We all love our kitchens, and so we should. Without overstating their role in our lives, the kitchen is the single-most important room in the home, not only helping to nourish us on a daily basis, but also acting as the social hub of the family and the focal point of activity when entertaining. It’s no surprise, therefore, that when it comes to replacing it, we spend an inordinate amount of time on our devices researching, long evenings sitting on the sofa buried in brochures and magazines, and countless lost weekends in the car driving to every conceivable showroom, poring over everything from taps to tiles, and sinks to splashbacks.

However, over and above the mammoth task of whittling down the myriad options of its constituent parts, the fundamental decision you have to get right is settling on a kitchen design

that’s going to work well for you and your family. Without good design, everything else is just a collection of stuff, says Kitchens By Design’s, Richard Cripps. And he’s right. “ Your kitchen is going to outlive any trends that are currently floating around , so you need to think carefully about that. Don’t get too caught up in trends that are happening right now,” he says. “ Focus on the design . Design is your single-most important consideration. Get the design right and everything else will usually fall into place—so it’s vitally important to engage a designer that fully understands your specific circumstances.” At its Takapuna-based showroom , Kitchens By Design has three qualified and certified designers that not only have the

Home & Design

relevant skills and experience in designing kitchens, but also have a current and comprehensive knowledge of products, hardware and materials. “Classic design lines, whether they’re traditional or modern will stand the test of time,” says Cripps. “That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go with an uninteresting or boring design – just be mindful that you’ll probably be looking at your new kitchen every day for the next 15 years. “If you want to have a bit of fun with the design and the colour, choose parts of the kitchen that can easily be changed out in years to come—pendant lighting, tapware, drawer and cupboard handles, and so on—but at the same time choose carefully the big ticket items, such as your benchtops and cabinetry style.” No matter what stage of life you’re at—a young couple with no kids yet, forty-somethings with a couple of teenagers in tow, or empty nesters contemplating retirement—things are going to change. So, when you’re weighing up the wants and needs for your new kitchen, don’t get too bogged down agonising over the latest appliances, benchtop materials or fancy tiles, go and talk to a qualified designer who will help to future-proof your kitchen for what life will look like at the end of the next decade. If you thinking about putting in a new kitchen, give one of the team at Kitchens By Design a call, or pop into their showroom at 3 Byron Ave, Takapuna 09 379 3084. Rene displays a variety of furniture at his studio workshop in Oratia and enjoys talking to customers about their furniture aspirations. “When I deliver a piece and see that the person really appreciates the end product and the work that has gone into it, while feeling they’ve been part of the whole process, it makes for a good day.”

Currently I am enjoying a special connection with Italy, binging on Searching for Italy with Stanley Tucci! Literally, he has become my new best friend and I am living vicariously through him until I can get there to visit again! But for now all I can do is dream of Italy—the wine, the vineyards, the food, the coast, the cobblestone, the shopping, the history, the art, oh the art—okay I’m getting carried away, back to the point. In Italy everything feels like art—names like Botticelli, Da Vinci, and Caravaggio role off the tongue in true Italian style, but it is the works of Michelangelo Buonarroti whose creations I fi nd formidabile, and whose works I long to see again. For they allow one to look back through time—giving meaning and clarity to the period we call the ‘Renaissance’. In Italy all roads lead to the Sistine, an entire chapel filled with a series of frescos and the iconic ceiling painted by the exceptionally talented Michelangelo. Like many other Italian Renaissance painters, Michelangelo used a fresco technique, meaning he applied washes of paint to wet plaster. In order to create an illusion of depth, Michelangelo would scrape off some of the wet medium prior to panting. He was the ultimate paint effect master. The task was so enormous, that Michelangelo would eventually quit Rome, describing his project as “the tragedy of the tomb”. He was quite possibly experiencing a Renaissance form of a modern day burn-out! His pupils were left to fi nish the job.

With no easy access to appropriate support, Michelangelo’s burn-out was hardly surprising: no local paint shop to consult and no easy access to online information. In fact, no quick tips anywhere on how to create special effects with paint. I reckon he would have had a field day, being able to, at the click of a button, fi nd out everything to do with colour washing, rag rolling, how to apply gold leaf and so on! It’s Time to Plant Deciduous Fruit Trees

If you want to add an orchard on your property, or enjoy fruit grown on the balcony, there is a deciduous fruit tree for everyone. Best planted in winter and spring, here are some of the top deciduous fruit trees for Auckland. Plums

Plums are best eaten straight off the tree, but are also wonderful in cakes, ice creams, jams, syrups or for bottling. Harvest times are usually mid to late summer. There are no true dwarf plums, but they can be kept small by hard pruning. Peaches

Known for their slightly fuzzy texture, cooking uses and unique flavour, peaches are best harvested from the tree when they give a little when squeezed and are a nice, rich skin colour. All peaches are self-fertile and do not need another variety to set fruit. Nectarines

When growing your own nectarines, you can enjoy the taste and smell that some supermarket fruit seems to lack. They are best eaten soon after harvesting as they tend to ripen quickly off the tree. All nectarines are self-fertile, making them a good choice if you only have space for one fruit tree. Apples

Apple trees are arriving in garden centres this August. The fruit ripens later in mid-autumn in Auckland. Dwarf varieties will take two years to fruit once planted, however normal apples may take up to three years depending on the soil and placement. Pears

With fruit perfect for bottling, cooking and eating straight off the tree, pear trees come into garden centres in August as well. Most pears need pollinators to produce fruit, so two different varieties in the same area is recommended.

Knowing Nelson

WORDS— JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES

Nestled in the northeast corner of South Island, sun-soaked Nelson Tasman is New Zealand’s feel-good region, with plenty to keep visitors occupied any time of year. Boasting adventure and activities galore, backed by oodles of wining and dining options come sundown, Nelson and its surrounds are a firm favourite with all at Verve. Check out these hidden gems and highlights…

Bike trip or not, there are few better places in the entire country to kick and back and relax with a cold craft beer or vino.

EXPLORE Tasman’s Great Taste Trail

You don’t need to set aside four days to complete all of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, a half- or full day will suffice to savour one of its best sections. The fi rst leg of this astronomic, gastronomic Great Ride reaches from downtown Nelson to Māpua Wharf, via the wetlands of the Waimea Inlet—that hosts wading birds like the white heron and the oystercatcher—and the shady tōtara forests of Rabbit Island from where a short ferry arrives at the wharf.

at present, beneath big, crisp, clear blue skies, Great Walk the Coast Track offers mesmeric views over the oceanside park minus the crowds—and the sandfl ies! There are ample opportunities to explore this pristine park in style and luxurious comfort, with companies such as Abel Tasman Guides (abeltasmanguides.co.nz) offering one- through to multiday tours, with lodge or glamping options as well as baggage transport along the track.

Bike trip or not, there are few better places in the entire country to kick and back and relax with a cold craft beer or vino than the reimagined Māpua Wharf. The waterside setting serves as a microcosm for all that makes the Nelson region—and the rest of Aotearoa for that matter—so appealing, thanks to its galleries, boutiques, bars and eateries such as the seafood delights of The Smokehouse and the Golden Bear Brewing Company where craft brews and gastropub fare can be enjoyed open air to the floating notes of live music. Kiwi Journeys Nelson (kiwijourneys.co.nz) can help arrange tours and shuttles, including bike hire and ferry tickets, between Nelson city the wharf, as well as around the wider region.

Middle-Earth Magic

Protected Paradise

This tucked away corner of Aotearoa serves as the gateway to three national parks: Nelson Lakes, Kahurangi, and Abel Tasman, the latter two home of Great Walks the Heaphy Track and Coast Track, respectively. Linking Nelson Tasman to West Coast, Kahurangi, which translates as “treasured possession” is the nation’s second largest national park, and its most diverse, cradling ancient forest and underground cave systems along with 80 percent of the country’s alpine plant species, 60 types of birds (including the great spotted kiwi), the giant land snail, and the giant wētā. There are heaps of short treks as well as the legendary Heaphy Track, a Great Walk that follows an ageold route that early Māori used to collect pounamu. Between May-November, the track also doubles as a mountain bike trail. Again, try Kiwi Journeys Nelson for shuttles, tours, and transport, including bike hire. Abel Tasman might be our smallest national park, but it’s among the most characterful and certainly the sunniest, home to some of the nation’s most stunning beaches, backed by forest and overlooking the Tonga Island Marine Reserve. Though it might be a little too chilly for most to do any kayaking

Surrounded by so much spectacular scenery, it’s little wonder that the Nelson Tasman region was chosen as the setting for several locations for The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies. Visit the atmospheric Chetwood Forest, over Tākaka Hill, to discover the ancient marble outcrops and shady beech tree canopy that sheltered Aragon and the hobbits from the Black Riders in Lord of the Rings: An Unexpected Journey. The nearby Harwoods Hole is New Zealand’s deepest vertical shaft, a kneetrembling sinkhole that plunges 176m into an underground river. Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve is another hobbit haunt, and one that’s so breathtaking, it was chosen by Sir Peter Jackson himself. The dazzling blue-green waters of the Te Hoiere/ Pelorus and Rai Rivers—popular swimming spots in the summer months—are lined with birdsong-fi lled podocarp forest easily explored via a series of trails. Acclaimed artisan jewellery store and workshop Jens Hansen (jenshansen.co.nz) was originally founded by Jens—a thirdgeneration Danish silversmith—in his family front room in Nelson in 1968, but now rests in the heart of the city in Trafalgar Square. A pioneer of his industry, Jens was commissioned, along with his son, Thorkild, to design and craft the originally ‘One Ring’ (they actually made more than 40 variations for various scenes) and other accessories for the Lord of the Rings movies. Jens tragically died in 1999, but his eldest son, Halfdan, continues his legacy as general manager and creative director. Visitors to Jens Hansen may witness the skilled team work its magic in the gallery and workshop, hand-forging customised and unique pieces—including necklaces, bracelets, earrings, cuffl inks and replicas of the world’s most famous ring—all stamped with Jens’s original iconic Maker’s Mark, a pagan-like symbol of good fortune.

STAY

DRINK AND DINE

Escape to feed your soul and your senses at the uber-luxurious Maruia River Retreat (maruia.co.nz), a half-hour drive from Murchison in the southern reaches of Nelson Tasman. See page 130 for more information.

Nelson’s craft beer credentials need little introduction. Its hops are world renowned; the region produces all the commercial hops for New Zealand cementing it as the craft beer brewing capital (craftbrewingcapital.co.nz). Neighbouring Marlborough is of course a winemaking heavyweight of Aotearoa, but Nelson Tasman has its decent share of vineyards too (tastenelsonwines. nz), with the region especially noted for its pinot noir, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc. Few other spots will keep you as merry, or as well-fed.

Three spacious, six-star suites await at the handsome Eden House (edenhouse.co.nz), luxury lodgings lodged between Nelson and Abel Tasman National Park in the Orinoco Valley. Enjoy views of the tranquil gardens (designed courtesy of courtesy of co-owner Bobbie…., who attended London’s English Gardening School and the Inchbald School of Design) from either of the two cottages or one lodge suite, all of which measure at least 110 square metres with private verandas or lawn area. Described by Tatler as “an instant word-of-mouth winner”, bookings at this most romantic of rural hideaways, replete with open fi res, spa pool, helipad, artist’s studio and walking trails, also include fi ne dining and fi ne wines. Exclusivity abounds at the jaw-dropping Falcon Brae (stoneflylodge.co.nz/the-villa), the latest contemporary development at Stonefly Lodge, less than an hour’s drive from downtown Nelson. Its prime hilltop setting sure sets the mood with expansive views of the Moteuka River and the surrounding mountains—and just wait till the stars explode across the night sky post-sunset. The 720-sq-metre lodge, sprouting from a sprawling 140-hectare site with its own forest and bush trails, is split between three suites and a bunkbed room, with space for up to 10 guests. Interior delights include a commercial kitchen (with optional private chef and house staff ), media theatre, grand piano, games den (including gym equipment, table tennis and a pool table), and a wonderful collection of original Kiwi art, while outside awaits a helipad, pool and heated spa, and a massive deck from where to take in those views. What’s more, the whole site’s off-grid and powered by solar panels.

Built in pretty Upper Moutere in the 1970s, Neudorf (neudorf.co.nz) has established itself as a local icon recognised on the international stage. The vineyard, famed for being dry farmed and organic, graces wine lists of leading eateries around the globe, counting the likes of Gordon Ramsay among its fans. “We currently export to about 16 countries and that list continues to grow,” says Judy Finn, who co-founded the winery with husband Tim. “And the challenge is still there—better wine year by year.” Its tucked away, dappled garden, surrounded by hills and hops and strings of vines in the shadow of the handsome timber estate is a magical spot to sit sampling their offerings. Cameras to the ready—not only are the dishes super Instragramable, so too is the setting of the Boat Shed Café (boatshedcafe.co.nz), set on stilts overlooking the water of Nelson city’s Wakefield Quay. The sustainable seasonal menu is usually heavy on the seafood, accompanied by the likes of steaks and lamb racks, or, if you’re feeling adventurous—or indecisive—there’s a ‘Trust the Chef’ set option. Try to time your visit for sunset for an even more spectacular meal.

A Tentative Farewell WORDS — JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES

Among the most prominent of Aotearoa’s already sprawling nest of eminent bird sanctuaries, Farewell Spit leans eastwards for around 30km from the northern tip of Mohua Golden Bay, in Nelson Tasman. The arching, spindly sandy strip—the nation’s mightiest spit and one of the world’s lengthiest sandbars— cradles around 90 species of birds including a gannet colony 9,000 strong, joined each spring by thousands more migratory waders from the northern hemisphere.

Unesco’s World Heritage Sites are places that possess “natural or cultural properties of outstanding universal value” as decreed by the World Heritage Committee. The criteria required to gain World Heritage status is regularly revised in order to “reflect the evolution of the World Heritage concept”, though what’s usually considered are such things as whether the site: · Represents a masterpiece of human creative genius · Bears exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or civilization is an outstanding example of architecture, technology or landscape that illustrates significant stages in human history · Contains significant natural habitats for conservation of biological diversity

Other feathered residents include the black swan and Caspian terns, while dolphins and whales regularly visit the local waters and slovenly seals laze around Wharariki Beach beyond the western base. Further wonders include salt marshes, mudflats, an historic lighthouse, and expansive dunes (the landmass was originally labelled ‘Ohetahua’ by Māori, which translates as ‘heaped up sand’), little wonder then, that it’s noted as a Unesco World Heritage Site “in waiting”. Understanding Unesco

The United Nations Education and Cultural Organization, or Unesco, is known as the ‘intellectual’ agency of the wider United Nations, established the year after its parent organisation was founded following the end of the second world war in 1945. Aotearoa played a prominent role in the gestation of Unesco with Dr Clarence Beeby, New Zealand’s then Director of Education, appointed the fi rst Director of Unesco’s Education Sector in 1948. Thirty nations attended the fi rst Unesco General Conference towards the close of 1946, and since then membership has ballooned to 195. The General Conference is one of Unesco’s three constitutional organs along with the Executive Board and the Secretariat. Audrey Azoulay, of France, is currently serving as the organisation’s eleventh Director-General. The General Conference and Executive Board are Unesco governing bodies, while the Secretariat, overseen by the Director-General, implements their decisions. Unesco was formed with purpose of fostering an international “culture of peace”, while eradicating poverty and creating sustainable development and intercultural dialogue “through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information”. The organisation primarily focuses on five main areas, or “themes”—education; natural sciences; social and human sciences; culture; and communication and information—with its World Heritage Sites arguably being the most well-known project.

Example of the world’s most famous sites include the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, Yellowstone National Park, and the Great Barrier Reef. Aotearoa New Zealand presently has three official Unesco World Heritage Sites: the Subantarctic Islands; Te Wāi Pounamu, which incorporates the national parks of Fiordland, Mount Aspiring, Aoraki Mount Cook and Westland Tai Poutini; and Tongariro, which has been bestowed Dual Heritage Status owing to its cultural and natural significance. Along with the likes of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Napier’s historic art deco precinct and the Kermadec Islands and Marine Reserve, Farewell Spit, in conjunction with Kahurangi National Park slightly to the south, shores up New Zealand’s Tentative List of Unesco World Heritage Sites. Finding Farewell

Farewell Spit is protected land, so only the fi rst four kilometres (and all Wharariki Beach to the west) may be explored independently. There are a handful of coastal walks that depart from around the spit’s base, but to really appreciate this Nelson Tasman gem, it’s best to book a tour. The Collingwood-based Farwell Spit Eco Tours offer short and full-day jaunts that ferry visitor along the sandbar in their famous red four-wheel-drive minibuses that make light work of tackling the sands as you take in the plethora of wildlife, exposed fossils, and, if you catch the tide at the right time, the occasional shipwreck. Built in 1897, Farewell Spit Lighthouse, the only one in Aotearoa with a lattice frame, protrudes from the spit’s tip. Another awesome option is to take in some highlights from atop of a steed with DoC-approved Cape Farewell Horse Treks, who operate tours to Wharariki Beach and beyond, memorable views of the spit and as far afield as Kahurangi National Park.

The Magic Of Monaco The principality of Monaco, steeped in history and dripping with wealth, is one of the jewels of la Cote d’Azur. WORDS— ANDREW KERR

Journeys

“Monaco is a decadent must-do on any keen traveller’s bucket-list. For an occasional visitor like me, it’s never anything short of breathtaking.”

Regardless of whether you stay here in lavish style or day-trip from along the coast, Monaco is a decadent must-do on any keen traveller’s bucket-list. For an occasional visitor like me, it’s never anything short of breathtaking, especially in spring when the bright-blue Mediterranean is invitingly warm, the latest fashions are on constant parade, and you can freely explore in a sportscar before peak tourist season limits you to second gear. Covering two square kilometres, Monaco is so small that you can’t help but rub shoulders with the celebrities residing on every street. Grand Prix week in the second half of May is, of course, Monaco at its glitzy best. In fact, if you fancy a stroll of precisely 3.34km, the famous racetrack through Monte-Carlo includes some of the best points of interest. Port Hercule is the sparkling centrepiece around which much

of the Formula 1 action unfolds and the starting grid is marked out in the shade of trees lining Boulevard Albert 1er. Beneath the church at Sainte-Devote, the cars turn right and accelerate up Avenue d’Ostende towards Monte-Carlo Casino.

Speaking from experience, it’s best to avoid the casino’s gold ceilings and chandeliers and splash your cash elsewhere. For

starters, there are countless world-class eateries in this patch of paradise. If you appreciate the best Italian cuisine, a couple of fi ne-dining options are Pulcinella, in Portier, and Le Pinocchio at Le Rocher. Finish your meal with a drop of L’Orangerie, the liqueur of Monaco, and kick on among locals with a nightcap at Buddha Bar. This place fi rmly deserves its reputation as a superior drinking and people-watching spot. If you’re shopping for haute couture or high-end gifts, you can’t go wrong at the myriad boutiques of Monte-Carlo or Le

Metropole shopping centre, opposite Casino Gardens. Venture off the beaten track and you’ll also discover fantastic specialty retailers. Secondhand Hermes offers a great range of (slightly) more affordable designer handbags on Boulevard des Moulins. Truffle Bistrot at Condamine Market is worth a look before ordering coffee and a sweet treat at Chocolaterie de Monaco. If your pet expects a treat, For Pets Only in Palais Saint James has amazing options. And for the petrolhead in your life, La Boutique at Automobile Club de Monaco hits the spot with classy souvenirs. For a reprieve from the afternoon heat, it’s nice to spend a quiet hour in one of Monaco’s many manicured gardens. The Japanese Garden is a beautiful retreat after some beach activity at Larvotto, and Casino Gardens in the heart of Monte-Carlo is a relaxing spot to consider whether you should chance your arm on the roulette wheel at Café de Paris next-door. The Jardin Exotique is a tourist attraction in its own right and there are sprawling hilltop gardens near the Prince’s Palace, home to the Grimaldi family since 1297. No invitation is required to visit the Palace but note that changing of the guard takes place each day at 11.55am sharp... If you don’t fancy battling Ferrari owners for a patch of tarmac on the streets of Monaco, the modern railway station allows swift connections to key centres along the French coast, namely Nice, Cannes and St. Tropez, as well as smaller character towns, like Juan-les-Pins, another personal favourite. And while Monaco is very walkable for most people, Monaco Tours operates touristic trains every 30 minutes and for a doubledecker bus experience, Le Grand Tour Monaco is an excellent way to discover the best little principality on the planet.

Our Story

Jordan and Anouk Rondel

THECAKER.CO.NZ

PHOTOGRAPHER — TRISTAN KALLAS

Jordan Rondel started The Caker in 2010, which she now runs with her sister Anouk after she left her job as a lawyer. Based in Los Angeles, the pair spend all their time together, as sisters, best friends and business partners. Food & Wine

Our roles are intertwined to a large degree and over the last two years we really needed each other’s skill sets in order to expand the business into the US.

Jordan

Anouk

My earliest memory of Jordan (pictured right) is helping her pick flowers from our grandparents’ garden in France. Like most younger siblings, I think she really looked up to me and always wanted to be a part of what I was doing. We have always been the best of friends and I consider myself extremely lucky to have had a companion like her for the last 28 years.

Anouk (pictured left) is almost four years older than me. My earliest memory of her is when I found a little lizard in the garden which had no tail and she told me, “Don’t worry, it will grow back!”

A few years ago, Anouk was working as a lawyer and I was extremely busy building The Caker brand and running myself a little thin because I simply didn’t have enough help. She could see that and was also starting to realise that being a lawyer wasn’t her calling, so she asked if she could come and work with me. The answer was a non-hesitant ‘yes’, and the rest is history. Our roles are intertwined to a large degree and over the last two years we really needed each other’s skill sets in order to expand the business into the US. While I am the more creative one who writes the recipes and is more the face of the brand, Anouk runs the business behind the scenes. She’s more practical than me, while I am more of a dreamer and I think this creates a wonderful balance — we are like yin and yang. She can fi x anything and is super handy with a drill! Anouk is the most intelligent, practical, kind and gorgeous person I know. She’s someone I can trust my life with, someone who is unfalteringly loyal, and someone to always have fun with. We are joined at the hip, and when we’re not working, we’re cooking dinner together, having a glass of wine, or going on an adventure. My favourite thing about her is that she’ll always be there for me, no matter what.

Growing up she was everything I wanted to be; she was the epitome of cool. She was also fairly quiet, but looking back now, I realise maybe I was just loud and she was happy for me to be the clown in public. We always had our own rooms but at one point when we were a bit older, she had two single beds in her room and I slept in one for a long time—even though all my things were in my room, we preferred sleeping together. A few years ago, I realised the corporate world of lawyering wasn’t for me and I nervously approached her, asking if I could try working for her. She was so desperate at the time, that thankfully she took me up on my offer! While we are very different in the way we work—I am the business side and she is the creative side—we consult each other on almost everything. I am more analytical and Jordan is more spontaneous, and it’s the thing we are most grateful for because we complement each other perfectly. She is still the epitome of cool, but she now takes centre stage! My favourite thing about Jordan is that I can trust her one million percent! I admire everything about her and she’s the best smelling person you’ll ever meet. Her room, her car, anything she has worn just smells like heaven. I feel like my sister and I exist in this world almost as one person and I think she would agree. It’s weird and beautiful and I am so grateful to our parents for having us both.

Pegasus Bay

WORDS— DENNIS KNILL

The Wine Rack

A one-hour leisurely drive north of Christchurch sheltered by the ancient limestone slopes of Mt Cass to the east, and the Three Deans to the west, lies one of the our most unique grapegrowing regions. In the short space of 50 years, Waipara Valley with its carpet of vineyards has become one of the fastest growing winelands in New Zealand renowned for producing some of the best pinot noir and riesling in the country. The high sunshine hot summers and long autumn days makes the ideal climate for grape-growing. Although the number of wineries in the region are small, the quality of wines produced throughout the valley are outstanding. Whilst the never-to-fail sauvignon blanc is still widely planted, many cellar doors are expanding their grape varietals into new territory. Of particular notoriety are chardonnay, chenin blanc, gewurtztramer, pinot gris, semillon,

Food & Wine

merlot, cabernet and botrytis late harvest dessert wines. A visit to Waipara Valley would not be complete without spending some time at Pegasus Bay Winery one of the valley’s icons. Named after the bay that sweeps north from Banks Peninsular the setting is spectacular. The brainchild of Ivan and Christine Donaldson who fi rst saw the potential from making wines in their garage during the weekends to the present day is no mean feat. With the help of their four sons who all work in key areas of the business the winery is a true family owned enterprise. No meal would be complete without a good wine to wash it all down. Here is my pick from some of the best of the best.

’18 Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillion

A well-balanced duet with fruit threaded aromas that delivers ripe citrus and a light crispness and acidity that fi lls the palate. Ready to drink now. $34. ’18 Pegasus Bay Chardonnay

Ripe and bold with layers of citrus and a refreshing acidity that captures the essence of the region. A wellintegrated and appealing example that will please. $44. ‘18 Pegasus Bay Riesling

An affordable example of the good work has been done with this grape. Its pure sweetness and intensity is offset by a fresh mouth-filling citrus that will linger on. $30. ‘19 Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir

Its bold ruby colour sets the scene. Distinctive by its floral bouquet structure and complexity laced with ripe but fi nely balanced tannins. This is as good as it gets, $54.

WORDS—MYA COLE

With views out to the rolling hills around Matakana, Plume Restaurant is the go-to place to soak up the vista of verdant vineyards and to immerse yourself in a truly delightful gastronomic experience, with dishes prepared using only the freshest of mouth-watering ingredients.

I was blown away by the complex and delicate flavours of the wine, produced under the name Runner Duck, at their boutique winery. Favourite was the sangiovese, soft and supple and pairing perfectly with the food.

My blissful starter was the fish kokoda, so perfect that I was reluctant to share with my partner who opted for the goat’s cheese timbale served with a heavenly orange marmalade that balanced out the cheese beautifully.

We finished off with a vanilla rose panna cotta and the vineyard trio made with grapes from Plume’s vines. The panna cotta was spectacular. Restaurant manager Farida showed us how to test panna cotta by shaking it, and of course it stayed together perfectly!

Snapper was fish of the day, served with a kind of delicate, creamy lentil stew, while the prawn peri peri arrived with a vegetable fried rice and soft, sweet, glazed pineapple. The heat of the prawns gave a fantastic kick and went down nicely with the supple pinot gris.

Plume boasts an impressive array of options on their menu, something to please everyone, its international dishes often with warming Indian undertones. Stomachs full, we were already looking forward to the next time we would be able to make it out there to tick more off from the menu. * Menus change seasonally

Experience the magic of Matakana, base yourself at one of our luxurious new Plume Villas and enjoy the superb food and wine at Plume Restaurant. Country life starts here. Plume Restaurant is an oasis for gourmet travellers, recognised for superb cuisine and as the cellar door for Runner Duck Estate Vineyard’s fine wines. Plume Restaurant is now complemented by Plume Villas, an enclave of 12 new luxury 1-3 bedroom villas, set within landscaped grounds. These villas share a swimming pool and are a relaxed stroll from the restaurant. Taking inspiration from a slice of native tōtara retrieved from a building site, these new works by Mandy Patmore explore themes of colonisation, habitat loss and their impact on our native wildlife. Moving through a timeline, considering where our landscape has come from and where it is heading, these works seek to inspire a feeling of a reverence for the taonga that we still have, and those that we have lost. Evelyn Dunstan Timatanga (Beginning) Just as each leaf, branch and petal grows individually and over time, so this artist creates each bud, leaf, stamen and tendril which all come together in a manner similar to how a plant would grow and develop from adolescence to maturity. Retaining the visual idea while transforming the concept from wax and into cast glass comes from many years of learning the physical properties of each material and understanding the influences one has on the other. The glass crystal takes on the organic form almost growing and developing as the two hands signify the life and energy of our relationship to the natural world. Dalene Meiring Dalene Meiring’s latest body of work invites the viewer to engage with Life in Colour, visual tales told through vibrant hues and eclectic imagery. Expressively offering themes of femininity and connectivity, Meiring creates worlds in which familiar motifs such as flowers, landscapes, cityscapes, objects and animals, take on wider symbolic qualities. Meiring has long been fascinated with the intricate ways in which the elements of our individual worlds coexist. It is this interaction that drives a gentle anecdotal narrative through each artwork, be it an abstracted landscape, a joyful floral composition, or an idyllic rural scene. Finely rendered in oil, the large scale of these paintings offers us a place to contemplate the shifting textural layering and serene tapestries so reflective of the timeless fragments of daily life. Born in Sasolburg, South Africa in 1965, Meiring studied art at the University of South Africa. In 1997 she emigrated with her family to New Zealand where she has continued to paint full time. Meiring’s work is exhibited in private and corporate collections throughout New Zealand and overseas. Life in Colour will be on display at Parnell Gallery from 17-31 August. We warmly welcome you to attend the exhibition preview on Tuesday 17 August, 5:30pm.

Backed by the spine-tingling grandeur of Stravinsky’s iconic score, Prior brings The Firebird forward to a different timeline, with the natural world threatened and humanity staring into the abyss. However, the captured firebird shows that like a phoenix, humanity too can rise from the ashes. This piece is a breathtaking work of social commentary, precision, beauty and power.

AUCKLAND FRIED CHICKEN FESTIVAL 21 August Shed 10

FANTAIL & TURTLE WINE CLUB 25 August Smales Farm

151

For any fried chicken lovers of foodies, this is the ultimate event. The Fried Chicken Festival features pop-ups from the best local restaurants and food trucks around. With live music, craft beer, wine and activities to keep you busy in-between, it’s bound to be a fun day out. Tickets are available online or at the door.

Hosted by the enthusiastic and knowledgeable Jemma Grobbelaar. Each meeting presents six wines, well paired cheeses, and excellent company. This month the club is exploring syrah and chardonnay. If you’re in the ‘not a chardonnay fan’ camp, you may just change your mind. The grapes for chardonnay, according to Grobbelaar, are some of the most neutral grapes used. Meaning, they’re heavily influenced by where they’re grown, soil and climate. So, with plenty to learn and nothing to lose – wine not?

WORDS — JAMIE CHRISTIAN DESPLACES

Verve sits down with Charlotte Grimshaw to talk about her memoir The Mirror Book. Art & About

152

Memories fade, fuzz, and fracture, just like glass. Like a mirror.

There’s a fi ne line between probing and prying. If relevant to the story, general questions about relationships are okay, but heading straight for specifics is lurching a little too much toward tabloid snooping for my liking. All bets are arguably off, however, when the interviewee—in this case, novelist Charlotte Grimshaw—has penned a soul-baring memoir, but that’s not to say it makes me feel any more comfortable about asking them. I’m not entirely convinced that Charlotte is all that comfortable about answering them, either, and I certainly don’t blame her. So, thank goodness for her lovely labradoodle, Philip, lounging in between us, an ever-grateful recipient of a pat or a gaze to help alleviate occasional awkwardness. “It was a total reversal of my normal approach, of my modus operandi,” admits the author, one hand on Philip’s back. “When you write fiction, you can say anything you like about the characters, but with this you’re nervous about what you’re saying about real people. Then you’re talking about yourself in a way that was previously very alien. I was always very reluctant to confide in anyone about anything.” It’s a surreal experience, sitting in the living room of one of Aotearoa’s most lauded writers discussing deeply personal issues which often involve her mother and one of Aotearoa’s most iconic cultural figures, C.K. Stead, who also happens to be Charlotte’s dad. I ask if she ever felt any competitiveness with him. “I never had that feeling. I think I always just had a sort of confidence about what I wanted to do, while knowing that what I was doing was quite different in style. Although he could be intense and a disciplinarian, we always had a good relationship and I always felt able to stand up to him. He didn’t loom in that kind of oppressive way. Maybe if I was a son, there may have been more competition. But that was never any issue.”

Do you think he feels competitive with you? “I wouldn’t know.

If he did, he wouldn’t say, but it’s not something I’m aware of.”

I point out that it appears her mother, Kay, is almost competitive on her husband’s behalf. In a standout paragraph a member of the public approaches Charlotte and favourably compares her literary talent with that of her dad’s. Kay later lets her disdain for the comparison be known with a shocking turn of phrase that leaps from the page like an uppercut to the reader’s chin. Even re-reading the sentence delivers a follow-up just as vicious. “I probably shouldn’t have written that,” says Charlotte, “but it’s part of an interesting picture. So, I would say yes, you’re right.” Have you had feedback from your parents about the book?

“They were not happy. They didn’t want me to publish it.”

Isn’t your father currently writing an autobiography series?

“Yes, he’s allowed to do that, but I’m not. I thought that I’ve played by his rules for so long that I’ll just do it anyway.”

Beautifully titled—and written—The Mirror Book reads more like a novel than a memoir, and one with, by the author’s own admission, an unreliable narrator. But then that was all part of the point. Memories fade, fuzz, and fracture, just like glass. Like a mirror. Memories are also so often so very personal and stored in a place of perspective that is ours alone. Experiences are open to interpretation, but facts and truth matter, and Charlotte goes in search of them all. Stead is so often so central to the book and his daughter’s focus that it sometimes feels as though it was written solely for him. More than once, Charlotte writes that as a child she’d tell him, “You are my favourite person in the world.” Continued on next page...

“I thought that maybe they'll finally empathise. But it turns out that I was wildly optimistic.”

Charlotte’s Web Continued...

The Mirror Book, published by Penguin Random House, is out now.

Her childhood is a fascinating one of protest marches and European travel and houses frequented by famous writers and painters. But between the lines runs a current of uncertainty and of dread. Charlotte regularly references her therapy sessions and the tome itself often feels like a confession from an analyst’s couch. I read that one of the reasons you wrote the book was to build better communications with your parents. How’s that gone? “Yes, I was really optimistic. I thought that now they'll

understand, you know, especially as I wrote about things that I'd never told them. I thought that maybe they'll fi nally empathise. But it turns out that I was wildly optimistic.” Charlotte also reminds the reader more than once about the quote from Czeslaw Milosz that “when a writer is born into a family, the family is fi nished”. When two are born, what chance does it stand, then—even if one is “my favourite person in the world”? With the dust having settled and having had more time to reflect, I ask if Charlotte harbours any regrets about penning the book. “It makes me sad if I’ve annoyed them as I’ve always been a very devoted daughter,” she says. “I don’t feel it was wrong to publish it, I did it because I value the relationship with them. I did it to make them understand.”

You may have good focus for what must be done, and can get a lot of smaller projects and tasks finished, while breaking down bigger ones into smaller ones. You can use your mind to create opportunity, have new experiences, and make your life better. You’re more optimistic, and willing to think bigger. Make sure you act on your ideas and thoughts, or you can end up being all talk and no walk.

You have greater drive and energy for the things you love most, your love life, and your hobbies. The more you do that, the better you’ll be. During the second half, you’ll feel your mood lightens up a little as you want to focus on having fun and not deal with too much serious stuff. You can do well with creative projects and ventures, but aren’t so great with the details and work.

This is a great time to work on creating a solid support system to sustain you for months to come. You can feel like you’re a part of something bigger, and try to reach out and contribute to the world in some meaningful way. It’s a good month for doing joining good causes. You can meet lots of new people and make lots of new friends, and are more sociable and open to all.

Your emotions and your mind can come together, and you say what you mean and mean what you say. Good decisions and hard work brings you to where you want to be, and bad decisions and laziness puts more blocks in your path. You can feel more connected to your physical body and to the Earth. You may come across as more sensual, practical, or stable.

You turn your focus toward your goals, ambitions, and the direction you life is taking. You want to create long-term plans for achieving your goals, and you can have a more practical attitude. You can feel more connected to your community and get along better with your neighbours. You can also get along better with siblings, young people, and can impart your wisdom.

You benefit when you pay attention to the details, and you find the details easier to spot. You also benefit from being organised, maintaining a clean space, having a routine, and creating some structure in your life. Your alternate self comes out when you have good opportunity. You emerge having a stronger mind and better focus, and know how to be heard.

You want to express yourself creatively, and when you do, you can unlock new opportunities. You can also embrace your inner child, remembering what it’s like to have fun like that again, and if you have children, your relationship with them can improve, and they can have new opportunities presented to them. You lead by inspiring people and showing them what you are capable of if they open their hearts and souls.

You can be more emotional when it comes to your future, and worry about what will happen, but need to have more confidence in your choices. You’re more open to love, and want to experience the nice side of it. If single, you can have more opportunities, meet lots of new people, and enjoy the attention that you get, but you probably won’t rush to commit to anyone.

TAURUS 20 April – 20 May

GEMINI 21 May – 20 June

CANCER 21 June – 22 July

You may come across as more focused, detailed, or hard-working. You want to work on having better bonds with your family or the people you think of as family, have a better support structure, and have a solid home for you to retreat to. You emerge with a better sense of what friendship means to you, what you can realistically attain in your future, and how to merge your practical side with your dreamy side.

You plan about how you can strengthen your foundation for your future, and how you can become more focused and clear about what you want. You want to streamline everything, and you can clear out the clutter. You benefit from being more practical, stable, calm, and dedicated to whatever you want to do. This behaviour can lead to more doors opening for you. You believe more in yourself and have better self-esteem.

Your creativity and social life are stimulated this month, and plenty of opportunities to express yourself uniquely and creatively will present themselves. You are able to find a healthy balance between work and play. For some of you, working with a romantic partner could figure. Although you could feel some pressure, you are always willing to work all the harder to meet your new responsibilities.

You emerge more willing to explore, expand, and can be on the verge of a high point in your life. You can be a little bit of a rebel but you find new opportunities waiting for you if you do. You can take a casual friendship to the next level or eliminate a friendship, become more involved in a group you belong to or walk away, or get closer to achieving a dream or give up on one.

of change and influence and utilising new knowledge and resources to help inform education and industry to prepare for the changing requirements of business.

the world has changed and the way we work has changed. Knowledge and understanding has advanced significantly so we need to be able to learn much more as we go and be informed by new information. We have new economic models that we have to understand. Current education is constrained as it was designed to get people a job for life. So education needs to change to ensure people can constantly evolve. The model of education hasn’t kept up so people are reluctant to get back into learning as it’s seen as too big of a commitment; it takes too long and it’s too disconnected from the real world.

How is what you’re doing at The Mind Lab changing it? By

normalising lifelong learning and having people at all stages of their lives getting into education. We’re making education accessible with content embedded in contemporary knowledge. Our economic future needs senior people with contemporary knowledge. We can’t just rely on the next generation, we need the combination of experience and knowledge. People are always saying they can’t learn as they can’t afford to stop working, because they’re used to the traditional way of learning. What we’re doing here means people don’t have to. Learning alongside your career is even more powerful. It’s the only way to keep our country moving.

The Mind Lab

the organisation. I work closely with our CEO Frances and an incredible team across Aotearoa to bring this strategy to life which changes regularly as we live in an ever changing world.

the internet was created, a raft of opportunities opened up and the world changed. We need new skills, knowledge, confidence and capability to broaden hearts and minds to not only cope with this rapid change, but also to embrace and lead us into the future. We need people with growth mindsets who can tackle big problems as the world comes up against larger social, economic, environmental challenges. We need people who can be creative, innovative, problem solve and be resilient when things don’t work. Above all, we need people to keep flexing their brain muscles to help tackle the big challenges ahead of us.

How is what you’re doing changing it? At The Mind Lab and Tech Futures Lab, incredible human beings walk through our doors every day. They have taken a step towards upskilling and often put themselves back into education after being out of it for 30 years. These are people who are curious about their untapped potential and how they can fi nd their learning edge. We get to support these people and provide a safe learning environment for those willing to trust us. What we see is incredible personal and professional growth as these people realise there is so much that they can do in the world to implement change, whether they are in schools, corporates, start-ups, own businesses, iwi, government, not-for-profit, charities, you name it.

expect society to change if we do not give people the opportunity to learn how to change the world and deal with the uncertainty that is coming at us? The current educational system is a legacy system that needs a complete redesign based on our future needs. How is what you’re doing changing it? We teach people to be confident to live and lead through uncertainty, with purpose fi rst, to fi nd their values, to become aware of the systems we operate in and the lenses we apply. We bring together a wave of change makers from cross-industry, disciplines, generations and cultures who go back to their communities and organisations to lead and create action towards a more inclusive, equal and regenerative world.

Describe your role. I provide academic and pastoral care

Why do you believe education needs to change? Māori medium education is leading our way for the success of Māori students but only a tiny percentage, around 1%, of our tamariki and their whānau are enrolled in it. A lot of our current schooling systems need to use the success of Māori medium education and implement them in their settings. There has been untold research on the success of programmes like Te Kotahitanga, so why aren’t whitestream schools taking up this opportunity if they know it works? Education in Aotearoa needs to change. How is what you’re doing changing it? By advising master’s students with their projects around equity in education, social justice, leadership and collaboration. Through those aspects we can implement change. It’s about growing an awareness, highlighting the issues, the unfairness and ongoing negative impacts of a colonised education system. A lot of teachers and community leaders doing our programmes want to make that change. We’re here to help facilitate them.

from a university training background, I see the failures of the ‘traditional’ way of teaching and learning. Education needs to be inclusive, it needs to encourage and inspire learners to reach their full potential, whatever that potential may be. Understanding different learning styles and needs is core to ensuring equitable outcomes for all.

How is what you’re doing changing it? We try to break these traditions and barriers by putting the learner and their potential to create impact at the centre of everything we do — from programme design to pastoral care. As a private tertiary institution we are disrupting the status quo of teaching and learning. It’s a more inclusive approach and our learners clearly benefit from an experiential, practice based learning approach. Real world outcomes are what we strive for, not a degree certificate on the wall.

Girls Unplug and Switch on Self-Belief at Kahunui At St Cuthbert’s, we are dedicated to nurturing happy, capable and resilient young women who recognise and celebrate their unique talents. An important pillar is the expansive education outside the classroom programme at all levels of the school, from as young as five years old. The highlight is our Kahunui Life Skills Experience, now into its second decade, which takes place at St Cuthbert’s own remote campus. Kahunui—meaning ‘big hawk’ in te reo Māori – is a St Cuthbert’s owned and operated 141-hectare rural property located in the Bay of Plenty, where our Year 10 girls spend close to four consecutive weeks, making the most of the amazing, natural location. St Cuthbert’s is the only girls’ school to offer a life skills experience on a separate school-owned campus. It’s a truly transformative adventure during which our students are challenged and learn many important life lessons. The programme is designed to advance all levels of girls’ fitness— social, physical, emotional, and intellectual. During this time, the girls are unplugged—no phones, laptops or devices, with the only communication back home being via post. Run by a dedicated team of academic/outdoor instructors, Kahunui welcomes groups of approximately 24 Year 10 students in a number of intakes across the year. Groups of eight students live in and manage their own house including their own cleaning, laundry, menu planning, budgeting, gardening and cooking.

skills. They throw themselves into outdoor activities ranging from tramping, kayaking, and blow-carting to fishing, small boat handling, are lighting and solo survival camping. Principal Justine Mahon says: “Kahunui is a unique and very special part of what we offer at St Cuthbert’s to develop confident young women. The experience helps our girls become aware of just how resourceful they are, how they can achieve whatever they put their mind to, how they can feel the fear and do it anyway, and how to be at one with the environment.” Every Year 10 student spends close to a month at Kahunui and we can say without exception that our girls love this facet of their education. Our girls emerge with new-found resilience and self-confidence, and a fresh appreciation of their home and family. Parents and their daughters returning home invigorated for the challenges ahead. “The girls were all glowing when we picked our daughter up from Kahunui. They’ve had a life changing, irreplaceable experience. It’s hard to sum up our elation that our daughter has had the opportunity to participate in such an amazing adventure.” — Parent of a St Cuthbert’s year 10 student. Extra support for an independent spirit Having dedicated her career to aged care, Margaret was still working well into her 80s Now 96, it’s surely her turn to enjoy some relaxation, but she’s never been the type to sit still for long. So when Margaret needed a little extra support, while retaining her independence, Summerset’s serviced apartments were the perfect option for her and her family. “It’s a great middle ground,” Margaret says. “It’s nice to know there’s some extra help and there’s always someone around if I need them, and it’s good to have the security of being in a village. At the same time, I still go out and do my own thing.” For Margaret’s daughter Lorraine, her mum’s boundless energy is awe inspiring. “She’s amazing! She’s always been energetic and very sociable. She’s still very much a carer and often checks up on others at the village, even if they are actually younger than her!”

A beautiful home When Margaret’s health took a turn and living at home became difficult, she started researching her options. As a keen gardener, she was impressed with Summerset from the moment she saw the stunning landscaped grounds at the village. The spacious lounge areas, stylish apartments and large communal areas also ticked all the boxes. “I’m so happy with my apartment, it has a lovely big bedroom and bathroom,” Margaret says. “The village has a good layout and feels very open, not cramped. For me, it’s important to have nice surroundings, and the gardens here are beautiful.”

Margaret chose the serviced apartment option so her laundry and housekeeping is taken care of, which is added peace of mind for the whole family. “It’s just so good to know that Mum has the support, and we don’t have to worry about security,” Lorraine says. “It’s great that there are care options available too, should she ever need them. Now that she’s settled in, we can all see how happy she is.”

Friendship and community For a livewire and a social butterfly like Margaret, the community spirit at the village has been the biggest bonus. “Everyone here is so friendly, we all keep in touch and we look out for each other,” she says. “That includes the staff too, I couldn’t fault them. It makes you feel safe.” With various activities, outings and gatherings on the calendar, Margaret’s a regular at bingo and craft group. And having friends right down the hallway means there’s always someone who’s keen for a catch-up and a cuppa. “We often have morning teas, but I think the wine and cheese afternoons are the most popular! Social gatherings are so important, and it’s lovely to have people around to chat with.” To find out more about serviced apartments at Summerset Heritage Park, contact Frank on 09 950 7962 or visit summerset.co.nz/ellerslie. The Holistic Approach At The Strand Veterinarian, we believe we can give every animal companion we meet a great life.

The foundations of health are built on not only physical health— optimal nutrition and preventative health care choices—but on promoting a healthy family and social environment with robust mental and emotional health. This is called a holistic approach to veterinary healthcare. Why choose a wellness plan? Promoting wellness is the key component to preventing sickness, and for our pets, individualised health care plans are few and far between. Our wellness plans are tailored to your pet. When combined with pet insurance, it creates five-star affordable veterinary care on a set budget. How does it work? We recommend booking a half-hour complimentary consultation—either at the clinic or by teleconsult – with our wellness consultant to build your pet’s plan. We will consider you and your pet’s needs with wellness plans for every life stage, breed, and budget.

Our wellness plans start at $1 a day with an annual enrolment fee of $75. The benefits start with one year of worm and flea products delivered to your door and your pet’s annual preventative care consultation (vaccinations and/or titre testing included). Additional benefits for exclusive Pet Project members are up to eight vet nurse consultations and direct insurance claims processed by the clinic. Advanced veterinary care and diagnostics can be costly. By combining an individual wellness plan with pet insurance, we can always do what’s best for your pet. For more information go to thestrandvet.co.nz , call 09 377 6667 or email wellness@thestrandvet.co.nz and mention this article for a FREE gourmet pet gift.

What about my pet insurance? Think of it as a good

marriage—together, they form a strong unit allowing you and your pet access to five-star health care on your set budget. Your recommended individual wellness plan is designed to keep your pet in their best health and cover the costs of your pet care health needs which are not normally covered by insurance. Combined with pet insurance, you can budget for your pet in both sickness and in health. Pets

Furry and Feathered Instagram accounts we love Alfie the Alpaca in Adelaide @alfie_the_alpaca_in_adelaide

In September 2018, Jeff brought back Alfie to become a part of his family. Jeff is Alfie’s human, and this Instagram account is a daily record of their bond and activities. Odd, funny, and endearing, it’s worth a look if you love alpacas and no-fi lter feeds a little off-beat. Birds of Oz @birdsofoz_

Katrina Smith was living the city life in Melbourne when covid hit. Fearing a lockdown, she packed up and rented a place on the Surf Coast of Victoria. She started posting videos of the birds that showed up on her balcony. Those birds quickly found online fame, notching up millions of views on TikTok and Instagram. If you love birds with flowers on their heads—follow this one. Reagan the Doodle (pictured) @reagandoodle

Scroll too fast, and you might just miss seeing Reagan the Australian labradoodle, dressed up in matching outfits alongside his human best friend and adopted brother, who is referred to as “Lil Buddy”, posed in all manner of comical poses.

Pet Remedy Pet Remedy is a natural Valerian-based calming formulation that helps all pets including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and horses to reduce anxiety, helping them feel happier and more relaxed.

Pet Remedy can help with all stressful situations including: · Separation anxiety · Fireworks · Travelling · Kennelling

The living environment of pets largely determines their quality of life and the importance of environmental scents is

recognised as a key factor in helping anxious or stressed pets feel happier and calmer. One great advantage of Pet Remedy, apart from being a natural option, is the unique way in which it works. It starts to help instantly and is very kind and gentle in its effect on the animal. The Pet Remedy diffuser delivers a constant slow release, and the water-based sprays are also very gentle with their calming effect.

· New home · New pet · Vet visits · Grooming

The product works by providing a highly attractive environmental scent that pets love. In times of stress or anxiety our pets can get over stimulated, which leads on to the many different signs of stress we see in them. The special Pet Remedy blend of essential oils is Valerian-based and works by distracting pets from environmental stress.

Cats, dogs and other pets are able to detect environmental scents at levels much lower than humans. They have highly developed olfactory systems and respond to these scents, which can help them become less focused on other stressful events.

Pet Remedy is now used on a daily basis by vets, vet nurses, rescue centres, pet professionals (such as behaviourists, trainers, and groomers), and even zoos all over the world! Pet Remedy is available from Animates now as a plug-in diffuser and calming sprays. The diffuser double refi ll pack lasts up to four months, so costs just $5.60 per week!
