A KIWI SOARS to the MR. OLYMPIA STAGE
Three years ago, Fawad who works as a mentor and personal trainer, as well as having a degree in aviation and other post-graduate diplomas one in management and the other in marketing, went to watch one of his friends compete in a bodybuilding contest. His friend won. Fawad was blown away by the whole experience. “On my way home I texted him to tell him how proud I was,” says the athlete. “I told him he had inspired me to compete and that I hoped I could make him proud of me too.” Five weeks later, in Wellington, Fawad entered his first show. He won. “I got so many messages of support, it was overwhelming,” he says, and on that tide of support entered the national competition and won that too. “No one knew me, I wasn’t on the bodybuilding scene,” says Fawad. “Winning that show earnt me a pro card of which I was the first in Australasia in this category and the right to compete at a higher level in the professional league.” Competing at a professional level is a stepping-stone to qualify for Mr Olympia — and it doesn’t get any higher than that! Every year the Mr Olympia competition takes place in Las Vegas. 2015 celebrates the 51st anniversary of the event which was founded in New York by the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) as a means to not only find the ultimate physique, but to enable the athletes to earn money from what was at the time, a relatively underground sport. The 1975 event was filmed for the superb documentary Pumping Iron, starring a 29-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger at his cunning and charismatic best. Before his turn at acting, and later politics, the seven-time Mr Olympia was, and still is, considered one of history’s finest bodybuilding champions. There are now a number of categories for men and women and Fawad will be the first athlete from Australasia to compete in the men’s physique category at ‘The Olympia’. “The IFBB wanted a category that people would want to aspire to, something achievable and functional,” says Fawad. “We wear board shorts and it’s just more of a friendly, beach look.” To achieve such a look still takes some serious dedication, a daily routine that is militarylike. “There’s no off-season for me,” says the bodybuilder. “It’s a lifestyle. If you want to be the best at anything, you can’t have six months on and six months off. As soon as I step off the stage, I’m thinking
about the next competition.” He rises at 5.30am for his first meal then heads to the gym before going home for his next meal and preparing his food for the rest of the day. He eats at least every three hours and normally has around 6-8 meals a day. Nearer competition time, Fawad may increase his meals and the days end with a second training session at the gym. “That’s why I believe that bodybuilding is one of the hardest sports” says Fawad. “It’s a 24-hour a day discipline. You must programme your body like you programme a computer, find out what nutrition and exercise routines work best and rest accordingly.” Twenty-six-year-old Fawad Ahadi was born in Afghanistan and moved to New Zealand when he was 11. It was strange at first, he says, hearing complaints about such things as the weather, when his childhood was spent fearing bombs, not rain, would fall from the sky. He started school halfway through the year, which was tough, and though there was “some teasing” at first, he settled in well and made friends fast, partly through his love of cricket. Fawad’s family had options to move to Canada or the United States, but is glad his father opted to bring them here, where Fawad is a “proud Kiwi”. Fawad longed to be a fast and agile sportsman. He was a chubby child and this made him even more determined to train harder in the gym: “Then, three years ago, I suffered a serious injury and was told not to lift any heavy objects off the floor, not to sprint. For someone who’s been involved in sport since childhood, it was a tough thing to take. I thought there has to be a way round this, so I did my research and found out what I could and couldn’t do. I wasn’t going to sit and feel sorry for myself. My injury was still there and the more I trained, the more manageable it became. My dedication paid off.” In just three years, Fawad has qualified for a host of prestigious events throughout the world, including in America, the bodybuilding mecca. “It’s a very Americandominated sport,” says Fawad. “My first pro show was in Pittsburgh and on the way over I was reading all of these fitness magazines with the guys in them who I would be up against on stage.” Fawad placed sixth out of 23, behind five Olympians. “Since I’ve become a pro, more Kiwis have done it too,” he says. “Through my experience overseas, it’s provided me with an opportunity to help others, mentor and train young and upcoming athletes. I’m also an official judge for the New Zealand International Federation of Bodybuilding and that’s such an honour and I am humbled to have been asked.” Fawad’s trainer and mentor Moe Elmoussawi, is the only other Kiwi to have stepped onto the Mr Olympia stage. “He’s president of the NZIFBB and awarded me my first win,” says Fawad. “I am grateful to have the best mentor in
the country, who has ‘been there and done that’ and I appreciate that so much.” When asked about ‘posing and routine’ on stage, Fawad compares posing to acting. “I don’t really like the limelight,” he says. “I’d rather not be seen. The very first time I competed was strange, standing there topless with all these people staring. But you just have to create the person that they want to see. I’m confident on stage and that’s what the role requires. Above all, you have to enjoy it.” And as for the other competitors? “We are all friends, but of course we want to win once we’re up there. It’s a sport that only those involved can understand what it entails. The hardships, the sacrifices and the struggles. There is rivalry, but above all, there is respect. It’s not easy to change the body. We understand each other’s journey.” Fawad is now five months away from competing on the Olympia stage and he counts down every day and works towards it with a plan. “As excited as I am, I know that this will be the most challenging part of my journey yet, as I will be up against the ‘best of the best’. To grow we must push outside our comfort zones and for me Olympia is another challenge used as a tool to inspire others and encourage them to pursue their dreams, because impossible is nothing, and we all have greatness in us.” “Take the first step and become your best”! At Verve we look forward to following Fawad’s journey and wish him all the best. Photos: Peter Morris; www.photoshoot.co.nz

“I was never into competing,” says champion bodybuilder and upcoming Mr Olympia hopeful Fawad Ahadi. “I never had a desire to jump onto the stage. I just wanted to be fit and healthy and help my friends do the same. I gained inspiration from seeing them change their lifestyles. If you’re fit and healthy, then you’re happy. When you’re happy, then you treat other people well and the happiness spreads.”

WORKING OUT AND STILL NOT LOSING WEIGHT? TWO WAYS FOOD CAN HELP. In March we started by looking at three reasons why people struggle to lose weight. We covered ‘how often to train’ followed by ‘ditching the scale’ in April. This month we look at food as fuel instead of something to feed your emotions or occupy your time.
FOOD AS FUEL Before I found my ‘feel great weight’, I tried all kinds of quick fixes. Initially I lost the weight but my health suffered as I was tired, not sleeping well and generally looking pale and ill. The culprit? Forcing myself to eat foods that just weren’t right for my body. Things turned around for me when I realised that food was my body’s fuel. I had to start thinking about the reasons I was eating what I was, and why. Once I realised this and adjusted my lifestyle, I reached my goal-weight while eating the food I love. Here’s how I moved beyond diet foods and found the right fuel for my lifestyle. You’re eating the wrong foods If you’re not losing weight, the first place you should be looking is the kitchen. Some people focus all of their energy on burning off calories and they don’t take the time to consider what they’re putting in as fuel. THINGS TO CONSIDER The foods you should eat depend heavily on your body-type, metabolism and other factors. A good rule of thumb is to stick to all natural, whole foods. You’re eating too much If you’ve already cleaned up your diet and you’re still not losing weight, it may be that you’re simply eating too much. In order to shed pounds, your body needs to run a calorie deficiency — meaning you need to burn more than you consume. That being said, you shouldn’t have to deprive yourself either. Life is about balance. Don’t become consumed with counting calories or weighing yourself every day. Make time to enjoy preparing healthy meals and eat smaller meals more often rather than depriving yourself. This is the magic ingredient to your relationship with food!

I was standing in the queue at the supermarket, with my harvest of salmon and a fine pinot noir (it’s okay, it’s got resveratrol in it), when a woman came up to me and said, “you’re that naturopath, aren’t you?” “Gosh, I thought, I have made it. Is this what happens to Brad?” While I was basking in momentary glory, the crunchy question came: “my husband suffers from depression. How can you fix it with natural medicine?” Right, your standard supermarket conversation. I put on my wise face, “well, based on the latest studies, depression is associated with a number of factors, including dysfunctional cortisol, imbalanced hormones, low BDNF, high homocysteine, vitamin deficiencies, mineral deficiencies, low cholesterol, under/over methylation, pyroluria, dysglycaemia, free radical damage, high level of inflammation, a high omega 6:3 ratio, food allergies, low thyroid function, hormonal dysfunction, heavy metal toxicity, aspartame toxicity, and/or a whole lot of other stuff that impacts on neurotransmitters. The trick is to find out which ones are driving his depression.” While I was packing my groceries, the conversation continued. “So, what should I give him? He is currently on an anti-depressant.” Oh yes, this is so very easy. About then, my 16-year-old son clicks in. “Papa can we just go. Please?” I wonder how Brad copes. I escape to the car park, but my new friend is not to be deterred. “Well, what do you think of Prozac.” My 16 year old does his eye-rolling thing, while I try and explain that Prozac is a drug that treats symptoms. It does not treat causes, and it comes with side effects. A person is not deficient in Prozac, but it can be a useful short-term strategy. “Okay so what should I give him?” “There are nine key categories of depression. All are treated differently. If you just treat a person generically, you can actually make them worse.” We escaped while she loaded her car. I did finally get to work with Mr Supermarket. We found that he had extremely high levels of inflammation, a food allergy, a leaky gut, an underactive thyroid, testosterone aromatising to oestradiol, mercury toxicity and he was chronically deficient in key nutrients. The full details of his recovery appear on our website. Depression is not normal, yet by the year 2020, one out of every two people will have suffered a serious depressive episode. If you are depressed, you are not suffering from a deficiency of some drug. There is something in your body that is unbalanced. At bewell, we work with you to find underlying causes and fix them.

DR MARY BIRDSALL — FERTILITY ASSOCIATES
TIPS FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KNOW SOMEONE TRYING TO CONCEIVE…
MUM’S THE WORD
• •
The road to motherhood is not always easy — and for those going through fertility treatment it can be quite emotional and isolating. Especially on holidays and special anniversaries. This month I thought I would dispel some myths about infertility and offer some tips for connecting with your friends and family who may be trying for a baby. INFERTILITY IMPACTS ONE IN FOUR PEOPLE TRYING FOR A BABY. Latest research from the University of Otago found that in New Zealand as many :tluassn1oinc4epeople sruntrying eertoF conceive a kooBexperience fertility issues at some stage.
•
•
Give them the space and privacy they need — don’t prod and they may talk about it in their own time. Arrange to meet them in a setting that does not involve all your friends/families cherubs — as much as they are cute — it can be too much for those trying to conceive or going through treatment. Choose a setting that does not necessarily involve the latest cocktail or wine garden. Try going for a walk in the park, catching a movie or that art exhibition. If they do share their experience with you, ask them when they might need your support, it could be around the time of results.
FREE FERTILITY EVENTS: Infertility is a very isolating topic for many but it doesn’t need to be — this month Fertility Associates is offering two free fertility events:

Often couples put off seeking help — but talking to a Fertility Specialist is an easy first step where you can look at all the options, and it does not always mean IVF. Many couples start their fertility pathway using non-surgical treatments such as clomiphene. THE WAIT LIST IS SO LONG I WILL NEVER GET IN. At Fertility Associates you can book a private consult and be seen within two to three weeks. If you are thinking about having publicly funded treatment, a private consult can ensure you are assessed promptly. THE COST IS SO MUCH — WE COULD NEVER AFFORD IT. There are many options available and as I mentioned above, IVF is not always the first step. At Fertility Associates we also offer Fertility Cover that refunds 70% of treatment costs after three IVF cycles if treatment is not successful. You can find out about the criteria for this programme on our website.

CLINIC 42 REJUVENATES Clinic 42, the hub of cosmetic medicine and medi facials in Epsom has expanded. We take a tour of its stylish makeover.
Nestled in the heart of Epsom overlooking the picturesque Sir John Logan Campbell Memorial Fountain, the 1920s villa at 321 Manukau Road that is home to Clinic 42 is boasting an elegant new look. Once situated on the top floor, the boutique, specialist clinic has recently taken over the building in its entirety. White walls, white drapes, white leather therapy beds, crystal lighting and Philippe Starck style chairs sit side by side with pops of colour, courtesy of artworks from the Elevation Capital Limited Collection. Well known pieces such as Gerrit Rietveld’s Red and Blue Chair and Imi Knoebel’s Anima Mundi (2012), Edition 4/5 adorn the new procedure rooms along with abundant vases filled with fresh flowers and jugs of pure spring water garnished with fruit slices. “We’ve gone for the white minimalistic look, but it’s still homely in a way that fits with the modern aesthetic,” says Dr Ellen Selkon who co-owns Clinic 42 with Dr Joanna Romanowska and Dr Lynn Theron. “This reflects who we are as people as well. We’re on the cutting edge of cosmetic medicine, but as people we’re real and down-to-earth.” In keeping with the doctors’ skin enhancement and facial rejuvenation, the new face of Clinic 42 is stunning without being overdone. “Lynn’s done a lot of the interior design, we’ve all had input but she’s overseen that side of things,” says Ellen. “We were getting very tight on space due to offering more and more procedures as they come on the

market and their increasing popularity. We’ve also got a new doctor on board — Dr Gillian Hawkley. There are now five doctors on the team: the three of us, Dr Michelle McVie and Gillian. She’s young and dynamic so it’s exciting.” The clinic, which takes its name from the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series of books, will also host nutritionist Jessica Campbell (www. bodybalancenutrition.co.nz) two days per week. Skin care and laser specialist Jess Parker will manage the upstairs floor, which is now dedicated to skin therapy and retains its own reception area and waiting room. The downstairs rooms will be devoted to medical procedures and the addition of a theatre means the practice can add the removal of moles and skin tags to their specialties. Aside from its facelift, it’s business as usual. Clinic 42 offers the same welcoming and supportive environment it’s known for with Laura Canale — who has been with the clinic for over 10 years — as head meeter and greeter. That being said, the added bonus of a fresh and fabulous makeover is just what the doctors ordered! 321 MANUKAU ROAD, EPSOM LAURA@CLINIC42.CO.NZ WWW.CLINIC42.CO.NZ 09 638 4242
ADDICTED TO ENDORPHINS?
Fitness expert and recovering selfconfessed exercise addict Katherine Schreiber earlier this year released The Truth About Exercise Addiction: Understanding the Dark Side of Thinspiration, a book co-authored with Heather Hausenblas, in which fitness fanatics share their woes. “The moment I became cognisant of my body,” writes Schreiber, “I wanted to change it.”
“Exercise is considered to be both physically and psychologically beneficial to health.”
According to one United States study, 3% of regular gym attendees are thought to have some form of exercise addiction, more than doubling for sport science students, with upwards of 50% of long distance runners and triathletes hooked on their craft. A widely-respected study published in the Journal of Behavioural Addictions came up with a six-point list to assess one’s levels of overexertion, urging subjects to examine if exercise is the most important thing in life, if it causes conflict with loved ones or if the skipping of that run or routine leads to moodiness or irritability. “Defining addictive behaviours, in general, is complex,” the authors write. “More recently a number of behaviours have been viewed as potentially addictive such as exercise, sex, gambling video games, and internet use… Exercise is considered to be both physically and psychologically beneficial to health. However, a few people may exercise without limits and to do damaging degrees, propelling researchers to agree that exercise could, in some cases, be harmful.” This writer may just have been such a case. Having completed the Auckland Quarter Marathon of 2013, I decided to set my sights on a full one the following year and began training hard, running, as I was to later agonisingly learn, far too far, far too quickly. Those late night forays when the tarmac became mine alone to pound as my mind cleared and the sky faded to black became an almost meditative, transcendent experience and I was well and truly hooked.

Health + Beauty A week before the Rotorua Marathon I developed a niggle in my groin — a strain, I supposed — and took to resting before the big race. An hour into the event the injury became too painful and I limped around the remainder of the route in just under seven hours. A couple of weeks later, still limping and having stubbornly ignored the pleas of friends and colleagues to visit a physiotherapist (my line remained resolute: “It’s just a strain!”), I tripped and broke my hip. Or broke my hip and tripped. I don’t recall the order. Either way, I wound up on the pavement in pain that can only be described as absolute. That ‘strain’, as it turns out, was a ticking time bomb, a stress fracture, a common affliction to long distance runners and one generally rather easily fixed with good rest. Hindsight is a cruel and wonderful thing.
“Runner’s high is an actual ‘high’ in the literal sense of the word.”
“Runner’s high is an actual ‘high’ in the literal sense of the word,” personal trainer Andy Martin tells CNN. “During and upon completion of an intense workout — whether it be an endurance race or a high-intensity weightlifting session — endorphins flood the brain and can induce an emotional response that can range from satisfaction to euphoria, depending on the intensity of the activity.” Martin does stress, however, that there is a big difference between prioritising a ‘committed’ exercise regime and becoming addicted to it. “We throw around the word addiction,” writes David J Linden, neuroscience professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in the New York Times, “…what we mean is that these are behaviours we really enjoy… Aerobic exercise can be genuinely addictive for a select few, but it’s mostly an excellent antidepressant and anxiety reducer, and it is by far the single best thing one can do to mitigate the cognitive decline that accompanies normal aging.” The true euphoria of runner’s high, he says, is experienced only by a select few, “the rest merely feel accomplished and exhausted”. Unless compulsive exercise is accompanied by an eating disorder, Linden argues, the consequences are almost never severe, “so put down that remote, hoist yourself off the sofa, and get outside to exercise.” And don’t be afraid of the physio. For many women in New Zealand, Mother’s Day will be celebrated with breakfast in bed and a stick figure portrait drawn by even stickier fingers. For some women, however, the day may be a reminder that their own dreams of becoming a mother are proving more elusive than they had perhaps anticipated.
Many women today choose not to have children and live happily with that decision. For others, having a child is part of their plan, but the reality can prove more difficult. It could be that a woman will experience fertility issues of her own or be affected by those of her partner. The effect of age on fertility can also play a part if starting a family has been delayed or meeting the right person has not happened during a woman’s most fertile years. Many of those who struggle with conception will be referred for fertility treatment if it is an option for them. Cycles of appointments, injections and blood tests may come and go before a decision is made about whether to continue or stop. For many, this decision will also be influenced by financial constraints. The grief felt at this time is very real as people mourn for a future they perhaps had always assumed would come easily to them. For some women within this group there will be positive results, only to have the pregnancy end in miscarriage. Including those women who conceive naturally, it is thought that one in four women in New Zealand will experience pregnancy loss before 20 weeks gestation. Feelings around this loss will become easier to live with over time, but it’s not unusual for days like Mother’s Day to bring them back to the surface. Some ways to get through days like these include: • • • •
Lighting a candle for lost babies and/ or dreams. Talking with women who have had similar experiences. Buying yourself flowers or asking a friend or partner to. Celebrating the people you do have in your life in your own special way.
Whatever a woman’s journey, it’s important to remember that despite feeling otherwise, you are most certainly not alone. Love can be experienced in many different ways, as can the legacy you leave on the lives of those you touch around you. FOR SUPPORT AROUND PREGNANCY LOSS VISIT WWW.SANDS.ORG.NZ Words: Melanie Dower

Mother’s Day
Mother’s
“A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME… ….would smell as sweet”, Juliet implores Romeo. She convinces him that his name, and being a Montague mean nothing, for he would be the same person. This Mother’s Day gives me occasion to contemplate this as I look forward to celebrating it with joy for the first time as a mother of two. We have a second daughter now, who we have recently adopted. At the time of this writing she is two months old, but she came to us when she was just three weeks old. What will her personality be? There are only glimpses thus far. Does her history or our upbringing matter more? Nature versus nurture, the perennial question. And it remains to be seen. Then I remember a poem On Children by a favourite poet of mine, Kahlil Gibran: “Your children are not your children, They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you” When I was pregnant with my first daughter I printed this and put it on her room wall, to remind myself of the delicate balance in parenthood — to encourage a child in his or her path and not to ‘force’ him/her towards one. I do not ‘own’ my child, she does not ‘belong’ to me. She is merely ‘lent’ to me for a time, during which I am to love her unconditionally and nurture her path with reference to her talents and interests. Reminding myself of this is necessary, as I come from a culture and high-pressure environment where much revolves around achieving academic excellence and being a financially successful adult, respected in society. Your worth and the achievements of your children are a also reflection of you. The ‘race’ therefore, starts from childhood. The poem reminds me that what I think is best and the path I have trodden may not always be best for her. She is her own person with her own talents and interests and my job is to help her discern these, nurture them, and guide her to be happy and successful in these. I am reminded of this duty again with my newborn. It doesn’t matter ‘through’ whom she came — she will be who she is. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet! She has, however, been given certain gifts, and it is my job to find these out and nurture them to her own path. Herself a gift to me, I love her with the same ferocity, dedication and commitment that is necessary of parenthood, once the decision to embark on its journey is made. And what a journey that is, whether you have one, two, or six children! This Mother’s Day I celebrate my privilege of helping to guide the lives of two little girls, one who came ‘through’ me and one who did not. They are both gifts for this lifetime though, and I remind myself of my role — to love them unconditionally and be a steward of their unique and individual paths. What a remarkable job!

Mother’s Day Brunch with Jeremy Dixon and Cook:30 After a successful career working for Sanitarium Health Food Company for ten years as a marketer of healthy breakfast cereals including Weet-Bix, Jeremy Dixon followed his long-held dream of becoming a chef or owning a café. Having discovered the benefits of healthy eating himself, he took a bold move and left his job to open a healthy café in Central Auckland. Ten years down the track the Revive cafés are an Auckland healthy-eating institution, and have found a large and loyal customer base.
Jeremy also manufactures Frooze Balls (healthy fruit and nut balls), which sell in over 500 stores and supermarkets throughout the country. And in the last few years, charity work has seen him travel to Cambodia, the Solomon Islands, South Africa and Nepal. His latest venture involves a television series which is being aired in the USA as well as an accompanying cookbook called Cook:30, which makes the ideal Mother’s Day gift. “My objective has always been to get normal people eating healthier food,” says Jeremy, who has a genuine passion for sharing his health principles and helping people to add energy and vitality to their lives. Jeremy’s recipes contain whole grains, plant-based protein, fresh produce and virtually no processed sugars or flours. All recipes in Cook:30 are dairy and egg free and most are gluten free. Verve is proud to bring you Jeremy’s version of a healthful Mother’s Day brunch for the whole family. • • • • •

SCRAMBLED TOFU WITH AVOCADO
Step 1 — saute onion & add ingredients ½ red onion finely sliced (half moons) 1 tablespoon oil 2 teaspoons ginger puree 2 cloves garlic crushed 10oz (300g) firm tofu crumbled ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari In a medium frying pan, saute the onion, oil, ginger and garlic. With your hands, crumble the tofu on top of the onions and continue to cook for around 3-5 minutes or until onion is clear. Add remaining ingredients to pan and mix and continue to cook for around 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Step 2 — garnish 1 avocado garnish: cilantro (fresh coriander) 1 tablespoon liquid honey 1 tablespoon lime juice Put the scrambled tofu into your serving dish. Dice avocado, chop cilantro and sprinkle over the tofu. Drizzle the honey and lime juice on top.
MAKES 3 X 1 CUP SERVES
A lovely flavoursome alternative to scrambled eggs. You will not believe how good it tastes!
REVIVE TOASTED GRANOLA A healthy crunchy granola that is far better for you than most packaged breakfast cereals.
1 cup regular rolled oats 1 cup quick oats (fine rolled oats) 3 tablespoons cashew nut pieces ½ cup shredded coconut ½ cup sliced almonds 4 tablespoons sesame seeds 3 tablespoons oil 3 tablespoons liquid honey ½ cup sunflower seeds ½ cup dried raisins ½ cup dried cranberries Mix oats, nuts and seeds in a large baking pan. Pour the honey and oil over and mix well. Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 20 minutes or until golden. Stir the mixture half way through so it cooks evenly. Pour granola into serving bowl and let it cool in the fridge. Shortly before serving mix in the dried fruit.
MAKES 4 CUPS Tip: This will store in an airtight container in your pantry for up to several weeks. Tip: I use a mixture of regular rolled oats and quick oats for a more interesting texture. However, you can use either if you do not have both. Tip: Other dried fruits can be used such as apricots and dates.
PICCOLI PIATTI Verve dines at Herne Bay’s best kept secret – a modern Italian delight! A welcoming open fire set the scene for a very enjoyable dinner at Piccoli Piatti Restaurant on Jervois Road. On arrival, we were greeted by Lynda, hostess and co-owner. Lynda and her staff were effortlessly professional and attentive throughout the evening without being intrusive — a rare and special thing. Piccoli Piatti’s menu offers a selection of modern Italian inspired cuisine: their charcuterie is sliced to order, pasta is handmade and they use only seasonal, fresh produce with vegetarian and gluten-free options. The wine list offers a wide selection of New Zealand and Italian wines available by the glass, carafe and bottle. Our preference was red, so we chose a carafe of beautiful Invivo Central Otago Pinot Noir. For starters we selected the antipasti tasting platter for two, comprised of a careful selection from the small dish section of their extensive menu. Ours came with: Calamari fritti, with lemon and garlic — so tender it melted in your mouth. Flat bread with warm butternut, caramelised onion, green olives and ricotta — truly flavoursome and generous. Some beautiful smoky flavoured cured pork. Fried white anchovies served with savoy cabbage, capers, pine nuts and pangrattato. Handmade burrata with olive oil, black sea salt and crostini. The antipasti is certainly a must-have choice for any couple dining at Piccoli Piatti, as it gives you an excellent way to experience your Italian adventure. We loved and devoured the dish and would certainly order this again without any hesitation. BUT the hero of the night and the most beautiful dish, which we again shared, was the pici al nero di sepia — black squid ink infused handmade pasta strings with crayfish and braised baby octopus. The flavours were to die for — compliments to the chef! Certainly a delicate and delicious dish deserving five stars. My partner and I are not dessert people at all, but we couldn’t resist a dessert recommended by our waiter. A hazelnut mousse topped with hokey pokey praline and a hidden layer of chocolate — this was clean and fresh and melted in your mouth. We’d also highly recommend Piccoli Piatti for couples or larger groups (there is even a function room suitable for a group of 24) — the owners and the chef alike deserve a huge round of applause for such an outstanding dining experience. Piccoli Piatti was a ten out of ten!

Less is More? Joshua Becker is on a mission to make your life better — but he’s not selling anything. In fact his aim is to help you buy less, because, he says, the best things in life are not things… It all began in 2008 while cleaning out his garage. A neighbour looking over the fence commented on how much stuff Becker had and how much time it would take him to sort it out. “I guess the more stuff you own, the more it owns you,” she said. Her words stuck with Becker, who then embarked on a quest to rid his house of all the unnecessary things he and his family had accumulated. This was later extended to include anything that served as a distraction from living a simple life, such as an overcommitment to activities and excess screen time. With his wife and young children, Becker now works to develop what he calls rational minimalism. That is, a minimalist lifestyle to suit their needs. “Some people I speak with get nervous when they hear the term minimalist,” says Becker. “For them, it conjures up images of destitution, barren walls, and empty cupboards.” He agrees that this sounds like no fun and goes on to define what living simply means to him and his family. “Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of everything that distracts us from it.” Becker began writing about their journey and shares tips and thoughts on his website, Becoming Minimalist. The website reaches over one million readers each month and his books Simplify and Clutter-free with Kids have each sold tens of thousands of copies.
30
www.vervemagazine.co.nz
“My desire is to intentionally remind others there is more joy in pursuing less than can be found in pursuing more,” he writes. “My truest passion is to extend this life-giving invitation to as many people as possible.” Becker’s reach extends far already and his Facebook page has over 235,000 followers. His most popular posts include tips on how to de-clutter your home, a practical guide to owning fewer clothes and a list of common problems solved by owning less. He has also written posts called A Helpful Guide to Becoming Unbusy and Why Fewer Toys Will Benefit Your Kids. Perhaps what lends most to his popularity is Becker’s accessibility and honesty in his writing. He acknowledges his own difficulties in parting with gifts he’s received and responds to nearly every comment made by readers, offering tips and encouragement. Becker also speaks internationally, refusing to take a fee for his talks, instead asking only that his travel and accommodation costs are covered. His passion for sharing his experience has proved so popular it is now his full-time job, proving perhaps that sometimes less really is more. www.becomingminimalist.com

MOA ROOM BLOOMS
“People don’t realise that it was here in Paris in the 1930s that Scandinavian design first started selling internationally,” Rod Fry, co-founder of design firm Moa Room, tells me via Skype from the French capital. “We did a lot of research into that and looked for a way of replicating it. The French are great appreciators of international talent. Paris is a place where things get brought together and the bigger story told.” For all their open-mindedness however, Rod says that there is still a fundamental philosophy of European superiority when it comes to culture and creativity. “There is this mentality that the centre of the world is Europe, that the vision and the best taste is there,” adds the entrepreneurial designer. “You meet many people who say they’d love to live in New Zealand, but that it’s just too far away. But, you think, ‘so far away from what?’ We’re living on a bloody sphere!” Auckland-born Rod left these shores 22 years ago. While working for a pharmaceutical company he met his French sociologist wife-to-be, Laurence Varga, in Taipei, and they later moved to China. Both ‘creative types’, (Rod is a lover of all things literature and a budding writer to boot), they looked for a change of lifestyle, so Rod joined a design agency in Shanghai before relocating to France. Eleven years ago the concept for Moa Room took hold, the idea to promote Kiwi creativity in Paris and beyond. “There used to be this shop near Victoria Market called Eon run by a lady named Angela Roper,” says Rod. “It was a beautiful store that showed New Zealand designers could put together a fantastic collection of international quality. She was very helpful to us, and it inspired us greatly with our research in France.” Many doubted Kiwi concepts would catch on in classical France, the nation not being particular lovers of wood and, at the time, disinterested in the ecological message so prevalent Down Under. But following Moa’s first showing at trade fair Masion et Objets in 2006, word soon spread and a multitude of magazine features followed. “Our designers have become very famous,” says Rod, who has been instrumental in much of their success. “There are very few people who have not seen a David Trubridge light in Paris.” Rod’s own creation, the Pi Table, has become somewhat of an icon too. September will see the release of an accompanying Pi chair, a project that has been four years in the making. “We’re working on a couple of other things, but we have to be pragmatic,” says Rod. “Developing our own products is a luxury, we have to move the collection we have in order to pay the bills.” Moa Room has recently moved shop also: “It has a lot more visibility in a fun and energetic area bursting with creative people. There’s a nice big window to show off the work.” Moa Room remains a labour of love, as all artistic endeavours should, and Rod is thrilled to be in a position to live off something which brings such joy, to him, his wife and others. “We’ve been very lucky,” he says. “We were very naïve when we started, we didn’t realise how tough it would be. It’s a pretty modest lifestyle and hopefully it will improve greatly in the coming years, and, when it does, there will be no guilt, it’s been completely deserved.” As much as Rod loves New Zealand, there is, he says, something about the French value system — “politically, culturally and philosophically” — that makes it so easy for him live there. Plus, he adds, it’s a fine place to raise his boy: “Our son is growing up seeing us go off to work and making beautiful things that make people happy. I’m a firm believer that when your kids see you doing such things, it’s such a great start in life.”

GOFI8URE
DIG DEEP WHEN EMPLOYING
PAUL GOLDSMITH
CYBERSPACE CONFERENCE
In the last of the series on Small Business Basics, Lisa Martin, Executive Director of GoFi8ure says employ the right people.
The Internet is a part of the furniture in our private lives and our businesses. We hardly think of it. But it is not without risks. Cyber threats can come from anywhere and target anyone. Our geographical isolation is no longer a defence.
We all skim the surface on so many things in our lives. But, if there’s one area of business where you need to be thorough, it’s hiring people.
As a small, open economy heavily dependent on trade, the Internet has connected us economically and socially to the world like never before. All of these benefits depend on an open, trusted and resilient cyberspace.
Your business has the best chance of success if you recruit the best people for the job. However, it’s not as simple as that. Employing is a convoluted affair. It’s time-consuming and can be costly if you get it wrong. So, beware of those first impressions. It only takes about 30 seconds to form an opinion of someone. That’s all very well if you’re judging a stranger who you aren’t likely to encounter again. Not so fine if you are going to work with the person you are looking at day in, day out day for the next few years. Before you form your opinion you need lots of information, a couple of meetings at least and time to reflect before you make a firm decision.
“Your business has the best chance of success if you recruit the best people for the job. However, it’s not as simple as that. Employing is a convoluted affair. It’s time-consuming and can be costly if you get it wrong.”
It’s always a good idea to make sure the job specification and application form are as detailed as possible. This allows you to set out your standards and expectations as well as encourage applicants to give as much detail about themselves as possible. CVs are great for a snap-shot but leave little room for personality. Ensure you have good judging criteria for each round of the process. Know why you are choosing one application over another. And know what you want to find out from each person at interview. Show them around the office, introduce them to the team. Give them a challenge to complete.
New Zealanders, of all backgrounds, in their homes and in their businesses, have a real stake in that open, trusted and resilient cyberspace. We need to be involved in developing the road rules for the Internet, and we need to be learning from our friends, sharing best practises and assisting each other. This is not to say that these partnerships will always come easily. Cyberspace technology is always evolving, and there are always new issues and challenges to work through. Fortunately, we are not operating in a vacuum — there are already frameworks in place. Our government has already introduced a number of measures to improve cyber security through a focus on public awareness, government ICT structures
“We need to be involved in developing the road rules for the Internet, and we need to be learning from our friends, sharing best practises and assisting each other.”
and critical national infrastructure. We have created a privatepublic partnership, “Connect Smart”, to build awareness and capability and tackle challenges as they arise. It is heartening that across the world a wide group of players — the private sector, public sector, academia and governments — all want to be involved in the debate on cyber security.
Don’t be afraid to use psycho-metric testing. For me, this kind of test reveals personality traits that I now know sit well within my business.
We welcome this debate, and if New Zealand is to continue to reap the benefits — innovation, increased economic growth and new social connections across borders — we need to have a voice. That’s why it’s positive and important that New Zealand will be joining the Global Forum on Cyber Expertise. I was privileged to represent New Zealand at the recent Global Forum on CyberSpace, where we announced our commitment to this.
Finally, check all references thoroughly. Always speak to past employers. Your number one may look good in the flesh and on paper but you won’t know how well they perform unless you do the digging.
Through this forum, and others like it, we can contribute to building the trust and confidence that our citizens and businesses need, and continue our involvement in the debate on the future of the Internet.

THE GUARDIANS & GRANTERS OF WISHES “Our role is very much being the guardians of wishes for those who were generous enough to think about philanthropy,” explains Sue Taylor, Public Trust’s National Manager, Charitable Services. She oversees a group of dedicated staff who look after most, if not all of the perpetual charitable trusts managed by Public Trust, including one of New Zealand’s largest and oldest, the Thomas George Macarthy Trust, which was established in 1912. Her small specialist team have extensive experience in setting up and managing charitable trusts, from investing capital to distributing income to a named beneficiary or through a grant.
i
They get a lot of satisfaction from their work that delivers funding to many worthy organisations and causes within the charitable sector, “which has a legacy that goes beyond any of us,” Taylor says with pride.
LOUISA & PATRICK EMMETT MURPHY FOUNDATION
Currently Public Trust manages over 400 charitable trusts across the country ranging from small trusts with single beneficiary charities, through to large multi-million dollar trusts operating full contestable grant programmes each year. “It’s about the kindness of those who have gone before us who want to leave a legacy within their community or for a particular cause. It’s an important and recognised part of our business.” Taylor’s team are actually both guardians and granters of wishes. They might manage a combination of trusts where people leave funds in a will in perpetuity, specifically for a named beneficiary (such as the SPCA), or in other scenarios they might go out into the community looking for good things to do. In Auckland alone, Public Trust has recently distributed through four foundations more than $225,000 across a variety of charitable organisations and causes, including the Blind Foundation, Cancer Society, Heart Foundation, Hospice, IHC, Medical Research, Rescue Helicopter, SPCA and St John. In May, as part of the company’s continuing commitment to modernise philanthropy, it’s launching a new cloud based grant making system to receive online applications and manage the entire grants cycle from application to evaluation. Annually there is a diverse range of funding provided every year there is a diverse range of funding provided within Auckland and across the country. Taylor’s Charitable Services team at Public Trust would be happy to advise a charitable organisation that is seeking funding or anyone considering setting up a foundation. JILTINGS & JITTERS “I knew that a pity party was the farthest thing from what I wanted or needed,” jilted American bride Shelby Swink tells USA Today. “A few people brought up the idea of trashing the dress.” Swink was supposed to wed in November of last year but her husband-to-be backed out five days before walking down the aisle. Wedding photographer Elizabeth Hoard suggested Swink do a ‘trash the dress’ photo shoot and invite her friends and family along to cover her – and her bridal gown – in colourful paint. Swink thought the idea “crazy” at first. “My friend Carol threw paint on me, not hesitating for one second, and it splashed all over my dress,” continues Swink. “That’s when I suddenly realised that the dress didn’t matter. It was merely a marital item.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, reliable statistics for cancelled weddings are scarce. According to one Marie Claire piece as many as 15% of weddings are nixed, with women just as likely to do the jilting as men. That number could be considerably higher too, but for a whole different kind of fear. For their book How Not to Marry the Wrong Man, authors Jennifer Gauvain and Anne Milford asked 1000 women, “Did you know you were making a mistake as you were walking down the aisle?” An astonishing 30% replied in the affirmative, but strolled down the aisle anyway. “The doubts were not the garden-variety nerves that typically accompany any life-changing decision,” Gauvain later blogged. “They weren’t just ‘cold feet’ or ‘wedding day jitters’. Rather, the women in my study talked about issues, concerns, doubts and other red flags that existed throughout the course of their relationship.” Less cruel is when the couple manage to calmly have that clear-the-air conversation well in advance. In a somewhat heartbreaking Huffington Post article succinctly titled My Cancelled Wedding, journalist Lisa Wolfe writes, “by the time the invitations came back from the printer, the very sad realisation had begun to sink in: just because we were great at making love didn’t mean we were going to be any good at making a life.” A heart-to-heart with her mother later, Wolfe decides it’s definitely
doomed and when she confronted her fiancé, “he looked relieved.” She gave him back the ring, they cried, then worried about the reactions of friends and family. “People were not just understanding – they complimented us on our maturity,” Wolfe writes. “’I should have done that, but I was too scared,’ said a women who’d been married for 30 years. Another women confided that she hadn’t wanted to disappoint her parents, another that she hadn’t wanted to admit the mistake to her friends.” Wolfe did eventually wed another man and admits it wasn’t easy to go down the aisle that time either. “As I stood at the end of the wedding procession, watching everyone walk out on cue, I panicked,” she says. “Marriage felt so daunting, the aisle so long. But I knew that I had to get myself down it.” Experiencing a cancelled wedding, she continues, taught her want she wanted in a marriage, and who she needed in her life: “it was the man who was standing and waiting for me in front of all our guests.” Psychologist Christine Meinecke, author of Everybody Marries the Wrong Person tells us what we all already deep down know, even if it is a little unromantic: “Instead of following your heart, use your head and trust your gut.” Not so easy for those being left stranded at the altar, however. As for Shelby Swink, well, she’s become somewhat of an unlikely jilted icon thanks to that paint-splattered photo-shoot. “I let go of everything I was feeling before,” she says. “I feel free of sadness, free of disappointment, free of anger. I let all of that go and let happiness take over.” Her wedding day, she adds, was supposed to be a day of happiness, surrounded by loved ones, “and that’s exactly what it was!” Her dress, for a while, was exhibited in Memphis bridal store, The Barefoot Bride, who donated a portion of their proceeds to charity. “Shelby really is as amazing as it seems,” her photographer, Elizabeth Hoard told the Daily Mail. “While she trashed the dress she never once trashed talked her ex to me or anyone around me. It really was a celebration of a new life and a new direction.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces
RUDY’S TIPS ‘N TRICKS As the cycle of ownership for computers gets shorter and shorter, does the pile of old hardware make you wonder if there is a better way? Well there is! Lease your equipment. I have options for you to get the best of both worlds.
WE CAN KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING! Aucklanders have had a reprieve! We can use our open fires and wood burners this winter. Prior to this amendment, open fireplaces were to be disabled and pre-2005 wood burners were to be banned. The new bylaw was expected to come into force in May. This law was going to affect 17,000 households with open fires and 64,000 with woodburners. This would have caused a financial burden on some households and rental properties would have had to look at other options for heating homes. With regards to the Residential Tenancies Act — open fires and wood burners are a chattel and would have required landlords to install some other heating device for the tenants. They could not just board up the fireplace or remove the wood burner. No other form of heating replaces the ambience and warmth of a wood fire, and it is inexpensive compared with the price of electricity and gas. It would have been quite a conundrum for landlords. Heat pumps are expensive to install and they use power. Installation of gas fires is also expensive. An open fireplace or wood burner does help to rent a property — it is a very definite plus!
“An open fireplace or wood burner does help to rent a property — it is a very definite plus!” I love my open fire — I would be so upset if I couldn’t use it. I am off to order wood for my fireplace for another winter — so cosy and warm. It gives me great pleasure. I am ready for the winter chills! I hope you are too!

Not content with simply saving lives, Dr Sudhvir Singh wants to inspire others to save the planet too. In 2010 the doctor co-founded lobby group Generation Zero, “a youthled organisation whose central purpose is to provide solutions for New Zealand to cut carbon pollution through smarter, liveable cities and independence from fossil fuels.” Two year later Sudhvir was a part of the New Zealand government delegation to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro and in 2013, he was nominated as a finalist for New Zealander of the Year. He’s not yet even 30.
“I’ve always been interested in helping people, that’s why I pursued medicine,” says the doctor who graduated top of his class at the Auckland School of Medicine in 2011. “It soon became apparent to me that part of the reason people were getting sick in the first place was related to the environment and the way

The Kiwi ‘quarter acre dream’ is now, says Sudhvir, less relevant for a younger generation more concerned with being close to work and keen to be part of a more vibrant environment. “If that means sacrificing some space, then so be it,” he adds. “We don’t want to be stuck in traffic, we’d rather live near the action. The council and government haven’t allowed for enough affordable developments in inner-city suburbs and we’ve had to sprawl far too far out.” Generation Zero propose the development of attractive, affordable apartment blocks: “Many of the ones built in the 90s were ugly shoeboxes, but it doesn’t have to be that way. We want ‘density done well’ with plenty of green spaces surrounding the buildings. Other cities do it perfectly. Look at Melbourne, Vancouver, just about all of Europe. Apartments don’t have to be unattractive and they can be an affordable choice for people of all demographics, complementing the existing stock of large suburban houses.”

Many of New Zealand’s most prevalent health problems are due to inactivity says Sudhvir: “Heart disease, diabetes, strokes and lung disease, many have their origin in people being sedentary. What’s causing that? In Auckland we have designed a city where the only way to get around is to drive a car. You shouldn’t have to go out of your way to make time to keep fit and healthy, it can be as easy as creating a walkable city. It’s a win-win situation, health is improved and air pollution reduced. Such cities are more vibrant, more liveable.” Sudvhir fears that the country’s ‘clean and green’ reputation has led to complacency. “We really need to take a good hard look at ourselves,” he goes on. “We have four million people living on the same land mass as the United Kingdom, which has 64 million, or Japan, which has 127 million. We’re lucky in that we have relatively few people, and, overall, we’re not having much of an environmental impact, but per capita, we’re one of the world’s highest emitters of carbon pollution. We need to actually live up to the ‘clean and green’ label that we like to give ourselves” The nation’s wealth of natural resources could, and should, raise New Zealand’s standing on the world stage, inspiring us to become an innovative trend-setter. “We have such a significant amount of renewable energy that we could be world-leaders,” says Sudhvir. “100% renewable really is within reach, the solutions are right there in front of us and we must show leadership. We must truly earn and then cement that reputation as a clean and green country.”

“Helping clients see their true self-worth is number one,” says Tanya Unkovich. It’s a foundational principle at her flourishing new counselling practice at Parnell Natural Health. “To enable another person to see their true self-worth opens the door to developing true self-respect. Once they have that, their decision making process is very different. They will choose differently and they will behave differently.”
“To enable another person to see their true self-worth opens the door to developing genuine self-respect. Once they have that, their decisionmaking process is very different. They will choose differently and they will behave differently.”
It sounds simple yet comes from a place of true wisdom that’s been earned the hard way: from a combination of specialised training, personal experience and a decade of coaching success. Tanya is an accomplished author, professional public speaker, business mentor, personal trainer, qualified life coach and counsellor with a third book currently in the pipeline. Whether it’s mentoring around sustaining weight loss, surviving grief, deciding on a career move or transforming a rocky relationship, Tanya works on her client’s core beliefs. Her focus is on creating change and championing new behaviour so her
client’s experience a fresh perspective, enhanced decision-making skills and increased confidence. It may involve supportive listening, or setting homework to reinforce communication skills through to helpful advice on nurturing self-care (exercise, eating behaviours, breathing properly and sleeping). While the approach may be varied depending on the client’s situation, one problem is constant. “It’s a common situation to see people that haven’t properly dealt with an issue which is self-sabotaging and stopping them from actually succeeding or moving forward.” She assists through one-on-one individual appointments or open group sessions to resolve limiting issues so that her clients can live, “an extraordinary life,” which she feels passionate about. As a result, Tanya has seen; women leave abusive relationships, employers deal with a toxic employee, addicts change behaviour and people come to terms with grief.
Although she’s attained a myriad of professional certifications, Tanya’s pursuit of professional knowledge isn’t static either. Last year she completed a New Zealand Certificate in Personal Training through the New Zealand Institute of Health and Fitness.
Tanya believes that it was really helpful to have those conversations as it helped them move forward to finally achieve their business desires and goals.
“It’s specialised knowledge that I use to help women in the area of weight loss, particularly for those in their fifties who want advice on how to exercise without having to go to a gym environment.”

Tanya is also a professional speaker about topics ranging from grief to a recent popular presentation on ‘the discipline about being self-employed’. However, it hasn’t been an easy ride. Pain has been a very good teacher, even for this dynamic coach.
WHY SEE A LIFE COACH? If you’re sick and tired of doing the same thing and still experiencing the same result, which you know isn’t working, why not book a session with Tanya Unkovich and experience results.
The “death of a dream” caused by her own personal struggle with fertility and being widowed unexpectedly triggered a complete career change from accountancy to study counselling which she says, “turned me literally inside out.”
1.
It was all part of a “bigger plan” she now nods. Tanya’s beloved husband was diagnosed with cancer at the same time she was in the latter stages of finishing her diploma in counselling.
2.
“I’d watched both my parents suffer from cancer and then Phil. Once he was diagnosed he kept a detailed journal about living with cancer. Five months later he sadly passed away and I knew deep down that he wanted his story told.”
3.
4.
As part of honouring his legacy to help others and fulfilling his final wish, Tanya wrote the book, Unplanned Journey. It immediately opened up a door to unforeseen opportunities. She was successfully signed by an American publisher and then offered a rare opportunity to appear on a popular United States television chat show, The Hour of Power, which is syndicated worldwide to an audience of millions. Over the show’s 45 year history, only two Kiwis have ever been invited to appear; singer and UNICEF Ambassador, Hayley Westenra and in 2009, Tanya Unkovich. Although she has “priceless memories” of chatting candidly off-camera with the television host, Dr Robert Schuller about his friend, Viktor Frankl, (the celebrated Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor), receiving an email at the time from a reader helped by her book was what really made her “heart sing”. Call it synchronicity. Call it validation. It signalled to Tanya that she was on the right path. Over time she discovered too that although clients initially came in for business-type coaching (particularly selfemployed people) they actually responded to personal coaching and in some instances a bit of counselling, “but they probably weren’t aware of it”.
NEW GROUP SESSIONS AT PARNELL NATURAL HEALTH
“By offering my combination of life coaching and counselling skills I can help a client unpack the past, come to terms with the present and give them the tools to improve their decision-making going forward into the future.” Fulfilment is a huge motivator for Tanya. “Whilst it’s great to be able to be successful in what you do. For me true success is about being fulfilled. That means contributing to something outside myself and helping others.” When not busy advising clients in clinic, you’ll often find Tanya on the back of her racy Ninja 300 sport motorbike or filling up her ‘own tank’ of motivational knowledge in coaching sessions with United States self-help guru, Anthony Robbins. Words: Sarah Sparks
A life coach can help you learn new strategies to achieve results that you’re currently not getting in areas such as; relationships, self-care, weight-loss. A life coach can help clarify uncertainty and design the strategies that connect you with your desired final outcome. A life coach can help with body image issues if you’ve unsuccessfully tried all the diets and personal trainers. A life coach can help stop undesirable behaviours by providing tools, accountable support and constructive ways to manage your feelings when they surface once the addictive behaviour stops.

DIGITAL MARKETING Digital marketing is essentially the future of marketing — it’s all about boosting brand visibility, reaching large audiences, executing sales and building customer relationships in real time. If businesses ignore this vastly evolving space they risk losing the sustainability of sales they once had. Social media makes up a large percentage of online marketing activity and can be a daunting venture for many businesses. This month we thought we would provide you with some insight on how to make your social media more manageable.
THE MUST-HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA TOOLS FOR SMALL/ MEDIUM BUSINESSES •
Buffer for scheduling and planning social media posts.
•
Shortstack for developing ads, competitions or product promotions.
•
Pagemodo for developing banners and social media posts.
•
Bitly for shortening links to keep them neat and clean.
•
Google Analytics for tracking and generating social media reports.
•
Mention for providing alerts when people are mentioning your brand or business online.
Many small to medium-sized businesses struggle with managing their online presence and Solute can take that pressure off, whether it be creating unique content, engaging your fans, pumping out interactive competitions or managing your display advertising.
We’re clinging onto the mild weather — we all know that winter is lurking. The precinct remains busy and we’re looking forward to continued positive trading in the coming months. I have recently returned from a trip to Brazil — to meet the in-laws, and to do some sight-seeing. It was a fascinating experience and very interesting to observe retail and hospitality practices in a different culture. Needless to say, our customer service efforts here in Newmarket are pretty fantastic! The NBA, in partnership with Angela Pile from Retain Consulting, recently launched our inaugural customer experience training workshops for our business members. We are striving to provide the best customer experience in Auckland. The Paymark figures for the March quarter have been finalised. The total number of transactions in Newmarket is up 3.5% on the same period last year and total spend in our cafes and restaurants has leapt up 8.8%. There is some very encouraging activity taking place. The recent opening of highly successful Burger Burger, in Osborne Lane, is further endorsement of our burgeoning hospitality sector. Stay tuned — more to come!
“You also may have heard that you can now have your electric car charged outside Vector’s headquarters on Carlton Gore Road!”
We have more exciting brands joining the Newmarket retail family. In the coming weeks Stolen Girlfriends Club opens in Nuffield Street and Deadly Ponies makes its debut on Osborne Street. You also may have heard that you can now have your electric car charged outside Vector’s headquarters on Carlton Gore Road! Don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 10 May — Newmarket is your one stop shop. Best regards Mark

VERVE INTERVIEWS
MICHELLE BELLETTE
NEW ZEALAND’S TOP PROPERTY MANAGER Verve: What got you into property management, Michelle? Michelle: I really enjoy all aspects of real estate and property management, and have been working in this arena since 1997. While a career in property management is not the career path many would choose, it is where my true passion lies, and I have chosen to learn as much as I can about it. V: What do you love best about your working life? M: I love working with my team. They are an awesome bunch of people and together we have a lot of fun in the office. Also, there is nothing quite as satisfying as happy property owners and tenants. I get a kick out of creating and nurturing good relationships like these. V: Auckland is a competitive market when it comes to property management. What do you feel makes your offering special? M: Having come from a property sales background, I have a good understanding of both sides of the ledger. We are frequently the first point of call when there are property decisions to be made. We have a great reputation for offering our clients choices, especially in the Central Auckland hub; we always do what we say we are going to do. V: When looking for a rental property/rental investment, what are the four most important things to consider? M: Decide whether you are looking for yield versus capital gain; think about the quality of the tenant you wish to attract; location is important — and easy access to schools and motorways should always be a consideration; low maintenance properties are always a good idea. V: How do you feel about technology and the vital role it plays in business these days? M: The technology we have at our disposal is amazing, and is a great tool, especially when it comes to keeping track of accounts, communications and our clients’ details. However, at the end of the day, our business is about personalities, relationships and dealing with our customers face to face will always be a vital part of the business. V: Michelle you lead a busy life. What do you do to keep on track? M: I have a lot of fun both at work and when I am not at work. When I am not at work I do a lot of things with my partner and my two adult daughters. I love fishing, riding my pushbike and just being outdoors, in fact. I also enjoy listening to music and spending time with friends over a few drinks. I really strive to maintain a good work-life balance, because I know that if I don’t, that this job will eat me up and spit me out for breakfast. MICHELLE BELLETTE

THE ART OF ATTRACTING & ENDEARING PEOPLE Networking, up until a few years ago, meant the linking together of computers. It is now known as the act of engaging and connecting with people. Whether in your business or personal life, networking focusses on the person and not any product or service. Many forget we network on a daily basis, whether at the supermarket, in the office, at the school gate, or in a retail store. Even though many demonstrate networking in the business world, a lot of the same rules apply in our personal lives as well. Let me demonstrate this for you... When we first meet someone, we want them to like us. Making a positive first impression is important. Did you know that 93% of all first impressions are non-verbal, while just 7% focus on language? The latest research shows that, of the 93%, 55% is on the way we dress and act and 38% on the tone of voice we use. This revelation was mind blowing to me! So, how do we include networking in our every day lives? 1. Be confident. People are always attracted to and want to be around others who smile. It breaks down barriers. Dress comfortably and you will move with a sense of pride. Confidence shows when we take action in the face of fear. Our feelings eventually catch up to us. In other words, do it when afraid and you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results. 2. Be yourself. There is no point trying to be someone else. We are who we are for a reason. Statistics show one in ten people we meet won’t like us — it could be our hair colour, our clothing, the way we speak. It is natural for us to want people to like us, but unfortunately, we invest far too much time and effort trying to win that one person over when there are nine other people ready and waiting to engage with us. 3. Be open-minded. Be sure not to pre-judge people when you first meet them. In business, this mistake is often made when someone mentions their role/title within a company. Just because they are not a decision maker, doesn’t mean they don’t have influence. The perfect example is a receptionist — whether in a personal or work environment — as people underestimate their worth. They are gatekeepers to information and resources you may need and are often consulted for an opinion by a manager or business owner. 4. Be honest. Be who you are and the right people will be attracted to you. Kiwis enjoy getting to know, like and trust people. Therefore, we want to be people who are ethical and have integrity. 5. Be resourceful/helpful. Show an interest in others and their hobbies. Let them know you are listening. If they have a problem and you know how to fix it, do it. I met a person at an event with a back problem and they needed a good physio. I offered the details of a trusted contact and they were appreciative. Not only did that person have a great experience, they were confident enough to refer the physio to friends, family and other contacts. They also became my advocate, because I had offered information without any expectation in return. So, networking applies in everyday life, whether it be in a work or social environment. Whoever you come across could be useful to you and equally you could provide something for them. So remember when you meet someone socially that they could potentially also turn into a business contact. WWW.CARMELMURPHY.CO.NZ | 021 820 078 May 2015

ATTENTION LANDLORDS, THE RENTAL BUREAU IS HERE — AND THE SERVICE IS OUTSTANDING. Tired of the maintenance and the hassle of finding new tenants? Finally a property management company has come along with outstanding service and we don’t charge the earth. We’re just sorry we took so long.
Our outstanding service. We do a lot more than just tick boxes. Every quarter, you’ll receive detailed reports from your dedicated property manager, including photos, market appraisal and investment recommendations; that means actual estimates from people who know. Apart from our low, flat-rate management fee, we only charge you when you use our services, and we don’t charge at all for finding you wonderful tenants. Now that’s a much fairer way to do business! We think these bits should go without saying, but apparently they don’t... We answer the phone — we’ve heard some others don’t. We deal with issues super fast — we’ve heard some others don’t. We have a network of trades-people who turn up when they say they will, and are nice to your tenants! We carefully select tenants, and we’re very picky. Credit and reference checking is all part of the service. Our tenants really like how we treat them, so they stick around for longer — we like that. We check everything daily: from monies coming in, to that gutter that the tenant said was a bit dodgy, to the fence you said they could paint. We leave nothing to chance and our legal documents and tenant guidelines are clear, concise and easy to understand.
“Finally a property management company has come along with outstanding service and we don’t charge the earth.” We’re just pretty good with people — what more can we say — come and try our outstanding property management service! We’ll take away your headache overnight, so contact us now for a quick chat, or let’s have a coffee — we’d love to hear from you today. Speak soon, The Rental Bureau

Building Bridges, Hope and a Library
Though Bougainville Island has been settled for tens of thousands of years, the past century has undoubtedly been its most turbulent. Claimed by various European empires as well as Australia, it briefly fell into the hands of the Japanese during the Second World War before Australia took hold once more. When Papua New Guinea laid claim in 1975 a civil war soon erupted and the troubles lasted for over 20 years. In 1997 New Zealand acted as mediator and the peaceful resolution, which came to result in some autonomy for the island. Mr Pip, the internationally acclaimed novel by New Zealander Lloyd Jones, later made into a movie of the same name, is set to that civil war. The Kiwi connection is further cemented thanks to a library designed by Wellington architect Paul Kerr-Hislop and built with the help of Kiwi carpenter Barry Binding.
donated a lot of his time for free. “The people were very aware of the book, and even more so the film,” says the architect. “Lloyd had insisted the movie be shot on location and there are some remnants still there, such as the old colonial house where the character Mr Watts lived. There are people living in it now, which is quite incongruous, but it’s a nice reminder of what went on.”
“There was a certain distrust towards any western influence because of that history,” says Paul. “We had to tread very carefully to ensure that the project was seen for exactly what it was: a gift from New Zealand to the people of Bougainville to try to help them heal from that terrible conflict.”
The locals played a massive part in the project, which was completed in 2013. Builder Barry Binding was already residing on the island working for the Volunteer Service Abroad and had set up a local carpentry school. “Barry was a very successful builder in New Zealand, but he decided to spend a number of years helping those on the island,” says Paul. “It was a marriage made in heaven, as we had all these youngsters he’d trained helping to build the library. They were all more than up to the task.” Paul had never

Paul describes the location as Paradise Lost, one that takes two days to reach. “Bougainville’s an unusual place,” he says. “Such a long way from anywhere. I never saw anyone who was overweight. There is no fast food, very few motor vehicles, so a lot of people walk. There’s an open fresh fruit and veg market at Arawa, all local produce. It’s quite wonderful, but the locals don’t see it like that of course. They see it as being deprived of all the wonderful things that the west has to offer.”

before designed a building for tropical climes and he relished the challenge. “It’s such a foreign environment,” he says. “But there are certain principles you follow that are fairly fool-proof, such as allowing for plenty of air flowing through the building. So long as you get those right, it should work. And it does. The building was beautifully executed by Barry and his team.” Having the community on-side was fundamental to the success of the entire project, which, says Paul, would probably have been burnt to the ground if deemed inappropriate. “It had to be sympathetic to their culture, their way of life,” he adds. “You couldn’t just plonk an air conditioned western style library there. The locals decorating the outside with the bamboo screens was the tour de force that really made it belong to that area.” It was satisfying to see people from the whole island come together and work in harmony. “Mr Pip was based around Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations,” says Paul, “and I suppose there were great expectations of what the library could achieve. It’s still early days and we will see if it does achieve that. I certainly hope that it does.”

A crowd gathers inside Grey Lynn Hall, a few dozen strong. It comprises of mainly twenty and thirtysomethings, but a handful of baby boomers also make up the group. There is an energy, a buzz. Some stand silently around the edges of the room, others defiantly stake their claim on a centre space. Some stretch. Some look nervous, others excited. I notice that a lady’s shoelace is undone. I tell her. Her husband comes over to thank me. He shakes my hand. His name is Nick. This is serious stuff. The lights cut, a cheer rises and the bassline of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal thunders through the opaque black. The floor pulsates to the rhythm of dancing feet. Even in the darkness, I am transfixed.

WARDROBE AUDIT TIME There’s absolutely no denying that the weather has changed. As our lovely Indian summer gives way to what is proving to be quite a wet autumn, it is the perfect time to take stock of what you have, and what you need, and to do a bit of a seasonal sort out in your wardrobe. At the end of a season and the start of a new one it’s worthwhile to take the time to do a bit of work in the wardrobe in order to make the transitions of the seasons easier. Which all sounds good in theory, but how do you do that? To make this a little easier, here’s a checklist to show you how to organise your wardrobe for a new season and to close off the season that is ending. To begin, take a look at your summer wardrobe and assess it:
Assessing Your Summer Wardrobe What did you wear? Eliminate what you have bypassed every day. Is it worn out? As we tend to wear and wash the same garments repeatedly. Is that garment still in good condition or is it time to retire it? How did you feel in it? Get rid of anything that you don’t feel good in. Do you still love it? Remove items that you’d now bypass if the season was starting over.
Now, take a look at your existing winter pieces:
Is it still on trend? Get a couple of fashion magazines (In Style, Fashion Quarterly) and take a quick squiz over a coffee. Is it in good condition? Simply put, is it pilled, saggy or faded? Get rid of it. Does it need mending? Get the job done. Does it still fit? What looked great last year may just be the wrong length or wrong cut this year. What will I wear it with? Do you need to buy an additional item to make it work? Do I still love it? If you were shopping now and you saw this piece, would you buy it? If not, out it goes. Can I re-invent it? It’s dated, but if you were to team it with something new could it look fresh?

NIKKI LANE ALL OR NOTHIN’
THE GLOAMING THE GLOAMING
SEA OLEENA SLEEPLESSNESS
She’s branded as ‘outlaw country’, but this smooth and gorgeous second album by Nikki Lane (actually Nicole Lane Frady) is a true country-rock masterpiece. Whereas many other protagonists of the genre have erred too much to one side or the other, Nikki Lane has truly walked the centre line and created a marvellous balanced blend of country, rock and a little pop — and what’s not to like! A joy to listen to, Nikki takes us on a journey that evokes memories of greats like Dusty Springfield, while still being contemporary and covering a classic but not clichéd range of subjects from the young girl in love to a woman desiring respect.
Ever heard of a ‘folk supergroup’? You aren’t alone — but this one truly is and The Gloaming’s debut album is superb. This Irish-American collaboration takes you on an amazing journey that envelops you like a heavy morning fog, and touches your emotions as you travel from the deep soulful ballads to the exhilarating energetic fiddle highs. Lead singer Iarla Ó Lionáird (Afro Celt Sound System) provides the gentle compelling guidance through soulful moments while Martin Hayes brings skill and energy to the fiddle.
Be prepared to be enveloped by a growling, rolling, multi-layered aerie ambience featuring the haunting female vocals of multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Loseth (stage name Sea Oleena). This wondrous album discloses more and more on each listen, taking you the listener more deeply into Charlotte Loseth’s complex yet divinely tranquil world. This is lazy Sunday’s and long weekends perfected!
Production quality on this album is stunning and Nikki Lane delivers an honest raw emotion, telling us this is real, not contrived! Available on CD, iTunes and HDTracks.com.
Musical Fidelity Merlin audio Wizardry at $1,799.00
This is more than your typical folk or traditional Irish group, as witnessed by Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh who plays the Norwegian hardanger fiddle, and Thomas Bartlett on piano who is not what you’d call ‘folky’. Dennis Cahill on guitar completes the ensemble. Available on CD, iTunes and realworldrecords.com.
Be sure to check out Sea Oleena’s other albums — her debut self-titled Sea Oleena (2010) and her critically acclaimed third album Shallow (2014), available on bandcamp.com and iTunes.

THE HOTEL ON PLACE VENDOME
FOUR SISTERS
VILLA AMERICA
STROPPY OLD WOMEN
TILLAR MAZZEO HARPER
HELEN RAPPAPORT PAN
LIZA KLAUSSMANN
COMPILED BY PAUL LITTLE
Hugely popular with the bookclub crowd, The Hotel on Place Vendome just goes on being in demand. It is the story of the famous or infamous Ritz Hotel in Paris. From fairly humble beginnings at the turn of the 20th century to the heady days when it was headquarters for the invading Germans during the war and at the same time home to spies, film stars and famous writers. Totally intriguing and very readable.
Four Sisters has already won the Spear’s Book Award for Family History and it will surely go on to collect more accolades. This is the story of the Romanov family and their dreadful demise on 17 July 1918. The Tsar, his wife and children were highest of high society and people wanted to be at events they attended, dress like the beautiful daughters, and everyone was curious as to who they would go on to marry. Then came the revolution and the family were taken to Ekaterinburg under lock and key and then the whole family were brutally killed. Rappaport makes history come alive: she delves into archives and personal diaries to give this story substantial authority.
Lisa Klaussman’s first book Tigers in Red Weather was very well received and there will be relief all round that her second novel Villa America is as good, if not better than her debut book. The Murphy’s have a gilded life and they set out to gather similar souls around them at their beautiful holiday house in Antibes. International artists and famous writers mingle with other interesting characters in a stunning setting and all is well until a young pilot named Owen joins the house party and the glitz and glamour becomes rather fragile as the outside world encroaches on the Murphy’s piece of paradise.

New Zealand women are wellknown for not holding back on offering opinions or advice and this new collection from Paul Little proves they haven’t lost their bite either. Some 52 women offer their thoughts on a huge variety of topics that somehow always get them going, proverbial red rags. Revealed are the topics that turn the normally meek and mild into fiery stroppy sheilas who aren’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers along the way. Endlessly entertaining and sharply observed, Stroppy Old Women is a great dip-intobook, perfect for the faded feminists who might just have got a little soft or gone slightly too PC. _____ $35

MAMA TINA, MOST NOBLE OF WOMEN
Over the years I have had the privilege of interviewing many amazing people, each with their own unique story to tell, but never before has the interview finished with a song. Yet this is exactly what happened when I spoke with Irish woman, Christina Noble. She asked, “before we go, can I sing you a song.” I believe no matter what I replied she would have sung it anyway, for it is a talent she has used throughout her life to endear herself to many, and to add a bit of magic, an unforgettable sparkle to the moment.
It was here that her true destiny began to unfold. Filled with indignation and the deepest of outrage against those who use and abuse the innocent and the poor, Christina set out to give a whole generation of Ho Chi Minh children the gift of normality and choice. In her own words she says, “I worked like a dog, non-stop, day in and day out, to disconnect these babies from all that was bad in their lives. With the help of a lot of good people I was able to give them unconditional love, hope and the ability to dream of a better life.”
The song she sung all the way from Ireland, was Fields of Athenry, a haunting folk ballad that talks of a young man taken away on a prison ship for stealing corn in order to feed his hungry family. This sad song speaks of the harshest of human conditions that so many experienced in centuries past: even sadder though, is the fact that to this day, so many of our fellow humans continue to experience similar or worse living conditions.
This incredible journey of mercy and courage to stand up for what is right, led to the development of The Christina Noble Foundation, which today has blossomed into 80 projects across Vietnam and Mongolia, helping the lives of over 700,000 children.
Christina herself, as she explained, is no stranger to hardship. By middle age, she had already lived a life of traumatic experiences punctuated by tragedy and despair. In 1989, spurred on by an unusual dream she had had almost 20 years prior, she landed in Ho Chi Minh City, determined to do something, to change the lives of the many children who lived there in poverty — something she understands all too well from her own shattered childhood.
Christina’s story has been made into the critically acclaimed film, Noble, an inspirational tale of one woman who believes that we should always stand up for what is right, and that it need only take one person to make a difference. It is a riveting and inspiring story of true valour and is due to be released in Auckland on 28 May.
“Stand up across the whole country, and across the world, mums and dads, children, youth, grandparents, uncles and aunts, stand up together for the rights of all our children. Give them back their childhood. Give them something to go for in the future.”
TO FIND OUT MORE, OR TO HELP CHRISTINA NOBLE WITH HER QUEST, VISIT WWW.CNCF.ORG.
Christina Noble asked Verve to give a special message to the people of New Zealand: “Stand up across the whole country, and across the world, mums and dads, children, youth, grandparents, uncles and aunts, stand up together for the rights of all our children. Give them back their childhood. Give them something to go for in the future.” May 2015

Jason Hicks ‘Numbers’
OPENING PREVIEW: TUESDAY, 12 MAY, 5.30PM EXHIBITION: 12 – 26 MAY, 2015 Jason Hicks has been represented by Parnell Gallery since 1998, where he has held regular shows over the ensuing decade. Jason’s paintings have engendered a keen following, and with the upcoming exhibition being his first solo show since 2007, the new developments in his unique style are eagerly anticipated. Jason’s work captures the affinity we as New Zealanders have with the birds and the land. His paintings evoke nostalgia for a more innocent past, whilst challenging the viewer to contemplate what the future may hold. His work explores identity, time and place, using our native birds as a vehicle to convey these ideas. The new show offers a deepening exploration of these themes, with the birds becoming increasingly defined in character. In Manaia our native ruru (morepork) confidently takes it’s place within the picture frame to grace the artist’s narrative. Manaia are traditionally believed to be the messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits, and guard against evil. The ethereal effect created by the layered media in the piece enhances this reference, and is juxtaposed with text referencing the iconographic Victorian tome, Buller’s Birds of New Zealand. Jason’s work is vastly rich in texture yet harmonious, comprising layers of loose underdrawing, more formally worked areas of overpainting and incorporating text, Maori iconography and robust colour to his visual inquiry. The combined effect is enhanced by the materials he works on, with recycled timbers often providing a fitting foil to the captivating imagery, as with Kingfisher and Friend. “In each layer a level of meaning can be scratched away, revealing home truths.” With each show, the artist further finds his contemporary niche within the rich tradition of bird and landscape painting in this country.

HOTELS & ART Last year Las Vegas casino owner Steve Wynn paid over US$28 million for a life-size sculpture of Popeye created by artist Jeff Koons. The shimmering, somewhat psychedelic, six-foot statue described by Sotherby’s as being, “rendered in mirror-polished stainless steel and finished in kaleidoscopic glazes,” complete with can of spinach now welcomes guests to the Wynn Hotel. There are a host of others around the globe home to further extraordinary works of art. Verve takes a look at some of the best…
Gramercy Park Hotel, New York
Dolder Grand, Zurich
Hotel Eclat, Beijing
In the heart of the Big Apple, Gramercy Park Hotel, adorned with custom-created furnishings and a rotating collection of 20th century art, offers a contemporary take on the classic New York hotel. Among those to have graced its walls include masterpieces by Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Enoc Perez. The lodging’s rooftop terrace and Manhattan’s only private park also affords some rather stunning views.
The incredible Dolder Grand, established in 1899, then reopened in 2008 with a Norman Foster-designed extension, is home to quite possibly Europe’s finest hotel-housed art collection, with over 100 pieces from masters such as Marc Quinn, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali. Rooms, corridors and courtyards are awash with museum-quality works all overlooking Lake Zurich and surrounded by luscious Swiss forests.
This luxury Beijing hotel is home to China’s largest private collection of Salvadors Dali’s works. In total, guestrooms and public areas are home to more than 100 pieces of museum-quality contemporary art, sculptures and paintings by the likes of Andy Warhol, Pierre Matter and Chen Wen Ling.
Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore
Isla Simca
The hotel itself could be described as an artwork, a design from the mind of Pritzker prize-winning architect Kevin Roche set to the stunning back drop of Marina Bay and Singapore’s iconic skyline. Inside the five-star facility awaits a contemporary art collection — 4,200 pieces strong. Works by the likes of Frank Stella, David Hockney and Henry Moore can be explored courtesy of a complimentary self-guided iPod tour. The art is worth a cool US$4 million.
This private island off the coast of the pacific coast of Panama is owned by French philanthropist, businessman and art collector Jean Pigozzi. Ten years and millions of dollars in the making, the mountaintop lodging affords guests the opportunity to enjoy the works of Damien Hirst, George Lilanga, Koofi Kouakou and more. The eclectic mix sees the likes of African art sit alongside expensive movie props, Murano glasswork and restless neon LEDs.
Gallery Art Hotel, Florence The Surrey, New York This luxurious lodging set in a quiet courtyard in the heart of Florence is a popular hangout for local artists and fashionistas. Plush materials such as cashmere, linen, Asian woods and Tuscan stones grace the rooms, which overlook Arno River. “Riga is home to over a third of the country’s people and some of the world’s best examples of Art Nouveau architecture.”
01
RIGA Positioned between Estonia and Lithuania, Latvia is the median of the three Baltic States in both size and population. With just under two million residents, Latvia regained independence in 1991 after occupation by both the Soviets and Nazi Germany. It’s capital Riga is home to over a third of the country’s people and some of the world’s best examples of Art Nouveau architecture. Founded in 1201, Riga is an easy city to navigate and flat enough to make walking comfortable. Based at the mouth of the Daugava River, the city is full of parks and its historical centre has been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
02
Also a world heritage site is Riga’s Central Market. Housed in former Zeppelin hangars, the market is spread over five pavilions and occupies more than 72,000 square kilometres. Teeming with locals and vendors, an estimated 100,000 people visit the market each day. The place hums with people selecting dried fish, vegetables, cheese, bread and meat. Counters of freshly baked pastries and stalls selling chocolate by the kilogram also cater to Latvians’ love of sugar. A short walk from the market is Riga’s Old Town, its cobbled streets full of restaurants and stores selling amber jewelry. Black Magic Bar serves Latvia’s famous Black Balsam, a herbal liqueur served in coffee or neat. Fine dining restaurant, 1221, attracts visitors for its beautiful exterior and its selection of meats including fish, horse, pigeon and beaver.
03
Behind the Old Town, spreads Bastion Hill Park, dissected by a canal crisscrossed with bridges. Just beyond there lies Esplanade Park, home to the Orthodox Cathedral and the Latvian National Museum of Art. Other museums worth visiting are the Latvian War Museum and The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. Behind Esplanade Park is the heart of Riga’s Art Nouveau district. Around 40 per cent of central Riga’s buildings were designed in this style and streets such as Alberta Iela attract photographers from around the world. This street is also home to the Art Nouveau Museum, housed in the apartment of architect Konstantins Peksens and restored in every way to resemble its 1903 appearance. With so many sights to see and so much walking to be done, it’s a welcome relief to visitors that the city is also known as a spa destination. Latvia’s connection to nature and history of sauna culture means that treatments featuring local honey and herbs can be as soothing or as invigorating as the traveller desires.

CRUISING the VOLGA
Churchill’s words above were spoken in 1939 and are as apt today as they were then. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has made huge progress in its tourism industry, allowing access to its many treasures and welcoming visitors, well, not with a smile (generally the Russians are dour and humorless) but with an attractive offering of tours and extremely efficient tour guides.
Whether you choose to travel five stars or three stars, rest assured that you will experience cleanliness throughout, great food and plenty of on-board entertainment.
The iconic ten nights/eleven day cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg (or the reverse) is full of wonderful surprises.
Moscow and St. Petersburg are expensive cities and the disparity between the inconceivably wealthy and infamous oligarchs and Russia’s poor is vast. There is however an emerging middle-class, but generally speaking life is extremely tough.
River cruising is always a relaxing way to travel and the countryside along the Volga, although very flat, is extremely varied and pretty. The pace is steady and relaxed.
84
www.vervemagazine.co.nz
Generally speaking, cruise ships carry passengers from many different countries. Some groups come with their own private tour leaders but each and every group is assigned a dedicated on-board tour guide who is able to speak the local language.
In both Moscow and St. Petersburg massive construction sights and monstrous modern
office buildings compete for space with beautiful classical architecture and many are hypercritical of such development. In fact, war is raging between the classicists and modern developers, many of whom are accused of destroying Russia’s architectural heritage in their relentless pursuit of greater wealth and political recognition. However, there is a plethora of magnificent classical buildings to see in both of these enchanting cities. The buildings inside the walls of the Kremlin seem at odds with its role as the seat of a modern, global economic and political powerhouse. There is a gentleness and unassuming atmosphere that beguiles and charms the visitor. Around Red Square and inside the Kremlin and its grounds are a number of churches — St. Basil’s Cathedral, Assumption Cathedral and Cathedral of
Vodka and the Volga, Beluga caviar and the Bolshoi Ballet, Communism and cathedrals — Russia is, as Winston Churchill described it, “a riddle wrapped up in a mystery, inside an enigma.”
the Archangel to mention a few, the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great, the Tsar Bell, the Mausoleum of Lenin — a veritable mix of iconic buildings illustrating the history of the Russian nation. The Armory palace is home to a number of the famous Faberge eggs. St. Petersburg is without doubt the more beautiful of the two cities and there is a wealth of museums, palaces and churches to visit. It is the fourth largest city in Europe after London, Paris and Moscow. It has preserved much more of the culture, arts and history of the time of the Tsars and great artists and writers like Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy are lauded to this day. Apart from The State Hermitage Museum and the Peter and Paul Fortress, there is the Marinsky (the former Bolshoi) Opera and Ballet Company to see. It is also home to the third largest cathedral in the world —
St. Isaacs’s Cathedral with a dome that is gilded using 100 kilograms of pure gold. A great day trip from St. Petersburg to Pushkin and Catherine’s Palace is well worth doing. Sandwiched between these two splendid cities is the gentle and demure Russian countryside. It appears sparsely populated, as most of the riverside towns are set back from the water’s edge. There are five stops along the route, Uglich, Yaroslavi, Goritsy, Kizhi and Mandrogi. Apart from Yaroslavi, these are quaint towns with single storied buildings, a general dealer where one can buy additional supplies if need be, and of course the vendors who have a huge variation of well crafted souvenirs for sale.
For the most part the sightseeing at the stops along the river revolves around churches, some are in good condition, and some are under reconstruction, while others are in a total state of disrepair. After decades of repression during the time of the Soviet Union, the Russian Orthodox Church is experiencing a much welcomed come back and hundreds of churches are undergoing massive restoration. One doesn’t need to be hugely adventurous to visit Russia. The Volga Cruise is a marvelous way to travel and to experience the abundance that this country has to offer. Jump aboard! WORLD JOURNEYS
MUSCAT RAMBLE, OMAN People were astonished to hear I was taking my children to Oman, but having travelled a lot in the Middle East, I knew they would love it. I use the term ‘children’ loosely; they are teenagers now, and not likely to pass up a mumfunded holiday. Travelling with them when they were small was a delight; their engaging charm and shy smiles allowed us to connect with people even without a common language. Fast forward a few years, their charm is just as potent now and they could carry my bags!
delighted to compare music tastes with my music-mad son, who then took him off to buy a dishdasha and kuma (traditional Omani outfit), and waited patiently as we wandered blissfully through Muttrah Souk. Covered from head to foot we all stood wide eyed and speechless in the aptly named Grand Mosque.
We flew into Muscat for a relaxing few days at the Shangri La Barr al Jissah — what a haven. Cool, luxurious rooms, with plenty to see and do, delightful people and a beautiful view of the sparkling Arabian Sea. While I took myself off to the spa, the teenagers managed to find a dozen new friends, leap off a huge inflatable edifice into the sea and play beach volleyball with the hotel staff.
Off to explore more of Oman, our driver and guide for the next few days, Faizal, had wild eyes and a cheeky grin. The children took to him immediately, as he announced, “I know a shortcut,” and veered away from the beautiful six-laned highway to bounce through dried wadis and crumbling villages. Rather than fixate on a map, we told Faizal to just make it fun. He did. He stopped for sweet Karak tea, introduced us to delicious Omani doughnuts, drove through mudbrick villages with children splashing in the local wadi, stopped for us to take photos of camels and sang, badly, a lot.
An hilarious day was spent in Muscat with a driver named Majid who was

of algae glowing like phosphorus in the waves crashing behind us. Forts and castles were brought to life with gruesome stories of bloodshed and black magic. We revelled in sunsets over ever changing sand dunes and cool refreshing wadis tumbling into crystal clear pools. We wandered through souks and drank tea with Bedouin, chatted with school children and slept in a luxury tent in the desert. Faizal shouted “I want to fly!” as he shot off up a steep dune with sand arching in huge swathes over the car and we savoured food from fancy restaurants and tiny food stalls alike. We loved every second. The warmth of the Omani people and their generosity of spirit made us feel quite at home, but the diversity of landscape was awe-inspiring and there seemed to be none of the ‘in your face’ spiel in the markets — quite restful for a family of Kiwis. LONG WEEKEND Bliss in ABEL TASMAN Perhaps the biggest challenge of travelling in New Zealand is inventing a whole new set of superlatives to describe the places and sights you see. Every turn in the road introduces you to, ‘the most beautiful place you have ever seen’. A recent trip to the Abel Tasman and Golden Bay regions truly proved that point to me. While we wandered along the Abel Tasman Coast Track, one of the Department of Conservation’s Great Walks, we were left dumbfounded by the rich golden beaches, the aquamarine waters and the cool forest which surrounded us. While pictures don’t really do the landscape justice, that didn’t stop us from continually pulling our cameras from our bags trying to capture its magic.
A trip to Abel Tasman is easily planned and encompasses far more than solely tramping in the park. While most tourists are drawn by the stupendously beautiful park, it would be a shame to miss out on the rest of the region’s attractions. Wine enthusiasts and foodies will be delighted by the vineyards and restaurants, while the jaw-dropping beaches and crystal clear waters will delight the kids and nature lovers alike. The Abel Tasman Track is a favourite destination for foreign visitors. It’s easy to see why. The scenery is world class and the track itself is accessible to most fitness levels. You can chose to do the track over a few days or you can utilise the numerous (albeit expensive) water taxis which ply the area and allow for day trippers to enjoy the area as well. Just make sure to plan your transport before you head out, as boats do get full and may not always have room should you decided to head back early. If you want to spend more than a day in the park you can book yourself into one of the many DOC campsites or huts, or if you prefer, you can stay at Peppers Awaroa Lodge (Awaroa Bay, Abel Tasman Park). The lodge is exquisitely located just off the expansive Awaroa Beach, nestled in amongst native wetlands. If you can, arrange to stay in one of the deluxe rooms which feature private balconies overlooking the bush. If a few days of tramping have left you tired and aching, I can highly recommend staying at Kimi Ora Eco Resort (99 Martin Farm Road, Kaiteriteri). The resort is a superb place to rejuvenate yourself and features indoor and outdoor pools, spas, a sauna and steam room. There is also a wellness centre which offers massage and other spa services. Our room once again featured a balcony, which looked out across the beautiful view towards Kaiteriteri and the beach. After spending a day at the absolutely spectacular Farewell Spit with its blindingly white sand dunes, we headed back toward Nelson and thankfully found last minute accommodation at the terrific Pohara Beachfront Motel (10 Tennyson Street, Pohara). This cute as a button motel is kept in tip-top shape by its welcoming staff and is the perfect place to bring the kids for a school holiday getaway. Just book well in advance however, as the motel is exceedingly popular. You cannot beat the location, as it is directly opposite the expansive sands of Pohara Beach. If you are looking for something a bit more luxurious, look no further than the wonderful Ratanui Lodge (818 Abel Tasman drive, Pohara). This fabulous spot is currently rated amongst the top hotels in New Zealand according to Trip Advisor, and deservedly so. The immaculate grounds are delightful and the lodge is extraordinarily well run by the affable, host-with-themost, Steve. The lodge also welcomes non-guests to come and dine in the restaurant, which offers delicious three course meals. As you slowly drive back towards Nelson, definitely factor in enough time to visit at least a couple of wineries. Our new favourite is the terrific Neudorf Winery (138 Neudorf Road, Upper Moutere). Warm and knowledgeable staff guide you through the tastings of their exceedingly good wine, which you can then follow up with a glass (or bottle) in their lovely garden. Winding up your long weekend, I heartily recommend the sublime Boat Shed Café (351 Wakefield Quay, Nelson) for a long lunch before you fly out. The café has perhaps one of the most stunning views you will find anywhere. Perched out over the water, the café has always been our destination of choice to finish off a trip to this most spectacular of regions. The food is terrific, the staff are great, and did I mention that view!? Getting off the plane in Auckland, just over an hour after leaving Nelson, I felt truly rejuvenated. Abel Tasman has it all and it’s so easy to get to. Go ahead and book a flight to Nelson today. You won’t be sorry. Words: Mark Garrison
HARLEY GOES ELECTRIC For the new environmentally-aware generation of riders It’s among the most famous and ferocious of noises in the motorised world, the guttural roar of the Harley-Davidson, or Hog to its friends. In fact, so iconic is the motorcycle’s sound that in 1994 the company attempted to register it as a trademark — much to the disgust of its competitors who used similar v-twin engines. Harley were eventually forced to withdraw, but the reputation of that legendary roar was even further entrenched. “If our customers know the sound cannot be imitated,” Joanne Bischmann, vice president of marketing, told the L.A. Times, “that’s good enough for me and for Harley-Davidson.” But that customer base is now ageing and changing, and to attract a younger, more environmentally-aware generation of Hog straddlers, Harley-Davidson is experimenting with replacing that raging v-engine with the silence of an electric one. It’s called Project LiveWire. “It’s a way of attracting younger people… who aren’t currently riders to our brand,” Asia-Pacific director of HarleyDavidson, Greg Willis, told the Sydney Morning Herald in March. “We want people to start thinking about Harley a bit differently… to hopefully make Harley-Davidson relevant to that younger audience, particularly urban young adults.” “America at its best has always been about reinvention,” said Matt Levatich, Harley-Davidson’s president and COO at the time of the launch. “And, like America, Harley-Davidson has reinvented itself many times in our history, with customers leading us every step of the way. Project LiveWire is another exciting moment in our history.” Still a concept, as it stands the stunning, silent Harley is good for an 85km range off a single charge, which takes three hours. It will reach 100km/h in around four seconds. LiveWire was revealed to a surprised press last September before embarking upon a trip down Route 66, offering select customers the opportunity to ride in exchange for feedback. This year, the tour went global.
90
www.vervemagazine.co.nz
Senior vice president and chief marketing officer of HarleyDavidson, Mark-Hans Richer, compares the motorbike not to the first electric car, but the original electric guitar. “It’s an expression of individuality and iconic style that just happens to be electric,” he says. “Project LiveWire is a bold statement for us as a company and a brand.”
“Preserving the riding environment is important to all of us.” There are no plans for LiveWire to hit showrooms in the immediate future, with the company still awaiting the battery technology to be improved in order to increase the bike’s range. “Preserving the riding environment is important to all of us,” continues Levatich. “Project LiveWire is just one element in our efforts to preserve and renew the freedom to ride for generations to come. As a company that has seen success for 111 years, we think in generational terms about our great riding environments for the next 111 years.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

KINGS PLANT BARN “Last year, Mitch, a bearded collie, was hit by a courier van. His most worrying injury was lung damage. He spent an entire weekend under the expert care of the Animal Emergency Centre, who, quite literally, saved his life. We are so grateful and have so much admiration for their professionalism.” — Don Wilson
feed the BiRds! Sadly the days when you could feed the birds for tuppence a bag are long gone. But on the plus side, women have the vote and nannies are unlikely to fly around on umbrellas while involving your children in excitingly dangerous adventures. But while I quite like pigeons, I must admit that the idea of feeding grey birds on a grey street seems fairly boring. Instead, what grabs me is the idea that I can nurture an eco-system that includes birds such as tuis, waxeyes (tahou), kererū and a whole host of others, in a space where I can easily relax and watch them. Autumn is a great time of year to plant many of the plants that will bring in birds. But it’s also a good time to invest in (or make) a birdfeeder to help them through winter. Though before you do anything it’s worth figuring out what the birds you want to feed need. Tuis are predominantly nectar feeders, but will also munch on fruit. Waxeyes are omnivorous and will feed on many pesky insects, nectar, and fruit. Kererū love fruit, while many exotic species like sparrows will happily eat grains. Bread is okay in moderation, but isn’t good for them in large quantities. WHAT TO PLANT?
OPEN WHEN YOUR REGULAR VET IS NOT!
It’s best to plant taller trees, as any birds feasting away are less vulnerable to predators. However, in an urban setting this isn’t always practical. But thankfully there are heaps of shrubs and even groundcovers that can help feed them. So while the list of plants that can help bring in birds is incredibly long, here are a few of my favourites. NATIVES: Trees — kowhai, pohutukawa, titoki, puriri, griselinias (kapuka), pittosporums, and cabbage trees (ti kouka). Short of space? Try the dwarf kowhai dragons gold (1.5m high) or tahitian pohutukawa (1m). Shrubs and Climbers — kakabeak, coprosma, tecomanthe, climbing rata, kawakawa, hebes, and parahebes. Grasses — flax, astelia, dianella nigra, libertia. Groundcovers – Try fuchsia procumbens, pratia angulata, muehlenbeckia axillaris.
(09) 849 2121 97 CARRINGTON ROAD, MT ALBERT
NON-NATIVES: There are loads of non-natives that are great for feeding the birds, but here are a few of my favourite: abutilon, callistemon, waratah (telopea), grevillea, banksia, flowering cherries, crab apple and mulberry. For more ideas ask one of our experts in-store.
