TANYA UNKOVICH

“Make the worst day of your life into the best day of your life!” These are not the words of a glass half-full woman, these come from a ‘spilling over the brim, grab life by the throat, I’m going to make the absolute most of every single day’ kind of person.

This person is Tanya Unkovich — business mentor, facilitator, published author and speaker — talking to me from her home in Parnell, just down the road from her office opposite the Domain. An hour with Tanya, and I came away feeling really quite uplifted. She is smart, professional and, above all, a warm and obviously caring person. Tanya has experienced much in life, including being widowed at 40. However, she made the decision to not let this event break her, but to make meaning of it, to create a new purpose and be an example to others.

Tanya believes accountability is a great way to maintain a higher standard, either individually or within a team. She has learned to develop her own discipline muscle and likes to surround herself with like-minded, positive and driven people. Tanya says, “one of my favourite quotes by Jim Rohn is, ‘You are the average of the five people you spend most of your time with.’” “THE BEST WAY TO TEACH OR LEAD IS BY EXAMPLE.”

“NO PROBLEM IS SO BAD THAT YOU CAN’T HANDLE IT”

Tanya is passionate about health and wellness and coaches many clients on this topic.

Not surprisingly, Tanya is huge on resilience. “Resilience is to believe no problem is so bad you can’t handle it. It’s about having a positive outlook and believing in yourself and translating that into both your personal and professional life.” Tanya has done just that, and in spades.

“It is important that I am both physically and emotionally fit, which means having a routine and planning my day. I have learned that if I don’t plan then I will end up fitting into everyone else’s schedule.”

After qualifying as a chartered accountant and operating her own business, Tanya completed a Diploma in Counselling then added life coaching to the mix. Consequently, Tanya has a pretty special set of skills that she applies to every aspect of her professional and, I suspect, personal life. Today we are talking about her role as a speaker and facilitator of healthy workplace environments. “Eighty per cent of business is psychology and twenty per cent is the mechanics and skills of the business owner,” says Tanya. “We work on the eighty per cent.” To that work she brings not only years of coaching, business mentoring and life experience but also the know-how of being a business owner herself. Tanya has worked in both corporate business and with hundreds of small business owners in the past 30 years.

“WORKPLACE WELLNESS REDUCES WORKPLACE SICKNESS.” In a corporate setting, management engage her services to assist in increasing production through improving staff morale. “My job is to look at the team and where necessary, put in place the mechanisms to ensure they work well together and everyone is operating to their highest potential.” Tanya believes success in the workplace — and increasing production — depends a lot on the self-esteem and level of happiness of the players.

“Getting back to basics with my clients about wellness is often a common starting point in our work together.” “I like the metaphor that you cannot build a skyscraper without deep and solid foundations. The best way for me to teach or lead is to be an example.”

“IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO MAKE CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE OR CHANGE DIRECTION.” Tanya is an attentive listener — she is a trained therapist after all — but she’s also an inspiring speaker. Most recently she spoke at the Rotorua Toastmasters’ 50th Anniversary Gala. She has also spoken extensively in the corporate and motivational sectors. Her topics are wide and varied, and have titles such as Resilience; Finding Happiness; Developing Your Discipline Muscle and Creating A Happier Workplace Environment. If you want to be inspired, motivated or educated, either on a professional platform or within a more casual forum, Tanya will deliver.

“BE SOMEBODY WHO MAKES EVERYBODY FEEL LIKE A SOMEBODY.” “My greatest teacher has been life itself. These experiences are what have enabled me to provide such a varied range of services to my clients.” “To be able to shift an individual or organisation from where they are now to where they want to be is what drives me.”

“So much comes back to knowing our own self-worth, and knowing your vision. If you are happy within yourself (and excited about your life), you will come to work happy, thus contributing to a happier workplace,” she says.

“There is a saying, ‘be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody’. There is so much truth to live by in that statement, and knowing that I am that ‘somebody’, makes my life experiences worth it.”

No matter where you are within the corporate structure, Tanya delivers at all levels, whether individual or team.

Words: Suzy Fraser

“It’s about going through a process. We explore lifestyle, relationships, time management and in many cases, fears and limiting beliefs.” Once the fear or a limiting belief is identified and removed, extraordinary shifts happen within the individual, the team, and ultimately the organisation. “And,” she says, “change can happen very quickly when you are ready.”

TANYA UNKOVICH WWW.TANYAUNKOVICH.CO.NZ 0274 821 979

Tanya has observed that people want more when they have tasted their true potential. This is when the momentum of long lasting change begins.

‘Tanya came into our practice and performed an overview of our systems. We also required business mentoring during the restructuring of our medical practice and we found her approach was both professional and highly efficient. Tanya has always made herself available to us when we felt we needed ongoing support or training, which as a result has made us feel valued as her client.’

“YOU ARE THE AVERAGE OF THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU SPEND THE MOST TIME WITH.” JIM ROHN

FIVE MINUTES WITH NICK AND GILES ENGLISH OF BREMONT WATCHES New Zealanders may not be too familiar with the names Nick and Giles English, but this may soon change, as the brothers are the energy that fuels the Bremont Watch Company. Bremont, a fairly new and small British watch brand is quietly becoming a behemoth in the world of watches, and is thrilled to be the official timing partner for the America’s Cup. Our Verve Reporter was thrilled to have a chat with the brothers on the eve of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series. WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN HOROLOGY BEGIN, AND HOW DID YOU BECOME SO INVOLVED IN WATCHES? It started at an early age. Giles and I had this wonderful upbringing, spending most of our time in our father’s workshop where he built everything from aircraft, cars, to musical instruments. He also built a sailing boat that we lived on as children. Another of his passions was watches and clocks — basically anything mechanical. He would buy old clocks at auction and get us to help restore them as children. Life changed for us in 1995 when my father and I were in a plane crash. My father died and I broke over 30 bones and was in intensive care for many months. When I recovered, Giles and I agreed that life is indeed very short and wanted to do something we both loved doing, so that’s exactly what we did. We decided to make watches. We knew Britain had an incredible history for watchmaking and we wanted to help re-establish it. It was five years of planning until we launched our first watches onto the market. These were very much created out of passion and a lot of sweat and tears! WHAT INSPIRED THE NAME BREMONT? Giles and I never wanted to restart a brand from the past. A lot of watch brands in the market place have had this done to them, having remained dormant for many

years. There are many famous old British watch and clock brands out there from the past but we really didn’t want to trade on someone else’s history. Obviously our surname is English too, which would also make any form of trademark on the name difficult, so it all came from an experience after dad died. We were in an old biplane flying down through France, it was bad weather and we needed to land. We knew we were only a few miles from an airfield, but the weather was worsening by the second and so eventually we took the decision to land in this farmer’s pea field. In England, when you land in someone’s field because of a problem you give the farmer a bottle of whiskey and say sorry. In France they impound your aircraft and make you take the wings off and ship it to an airfield. Luckily the farmer came out and helped us push the plane into his barn, where we stayed with him for a few days. He turned out to be a keen pilot in the past himself and loved mechanics. He had old clocks and old bikes in his workshop and we just built up a friendship with him. He really reminded us of our dad. His name was Antoine Bremont. So, a number of years later, we needed a name and we thought Bremont was a lovely sounding name and it meant something to us. DO YOU FEEL THAT THE WATCH INDUSTRY IS EXPERIENCING A RENEWED LOVE FOR THIS CRAFTSMANSHIP? People are definitely more aware of the craftsmanship that goes into watchmaking now more than ever. There is so much more readily available information out there for those that are interested. Collectors are really grasping that a mechanical watch really is for life. You can find out what time

it is on your computer, in your car, on your iPhone, but a mechanical watch does it in a way that makes you feel special and brings a smile to your face. Bremont has had some inspiring partnerships, with the likes of Jaguar and Boeing, for instance. CAN YOU GIVE US A FEW INSIGHTS AS TO WHY THE AMERICAS CUP IS SUCH A GOOD FIT WITH YOU AND YOUR BRAND? Giles and I grew up with flying and sailing in our blood, so it’s a dream come true that we have this opportunity to support and promote the amazing story of this world famous race that has such historical importance. The America’s Cup is an iconic sporting challenge and provides us with a superb opportunity to promote Bremont on a global stage. No other English watch company has been a timing partner of the race since 1851. Given that the America’s Cup is a unique combination of incredible history and cutting edge technology, the fit is perfect for us. Ever since the Englishman John Harrison invented the marine clock in the 18th Century there has been a close association between Britain and marine chronometers. There are strong links between the USA and Great Britain in the America’s Cup, founded over the course of 34 campaigns. To that end, we are delighted the 35th America’s Cup will be hosted in Bermuda, which is the perfect meeting point between both sailing nations. Bremont’s home is in London, but we have just opened a boutique in New York, which is only a short hop from Bermuda and which will undoubtedly play a part in future America’s Cup events. HOW IMPORTANT IS QUALITY SLEEP TO YOUR OVERALL HEALTH AND WELLBEING?

Good health and wellbeing come from having a good balance in everything you do. Medical experts are constantly saying, “eat well, sleep well, exercise well and you’ll find you can focus better and function better in most aspects of your life.” Sleep is something we tend to take for granted. I mean, you’re asleep right? How are you supposed to know if you’re sleeping well or not? You go to bed, you sleep, you get up, and well, life goes on. Sometimes we feel a bit tired and we might even well complain about not having slept so well last night, but seldom do we really consider what quality sleep is and what the lack thereof can do. Quite simply, the quality of your sleep has a direct influence on the quality of your awake time. You’ll perform better mentally, be more stable emotionally, feel less stressed and even feel more energetic physically if you regularly have quality sleep. Ironically, sleep is often the last thing anybody thinks about when they’re feeling troubled or stressed. Even after a sleepless night, we can come up with all sorts of reasons why it happened: too much stress, too much coffee, not enough exercise, too much for dinner the night before.

The impact this can have on relationships is obvious. You might also wonder if being behind the wheel of a car or handling any kind of mechanical equipment is wise. If you’re thinking about your sleep patterns and wondering what you can do to improve the quality of your sleep, here are a couple of things to consider. Firstly, set aside an appropriate amount of time each night for sleeping. Go to bed (to sleep — not to watch television) at an appropriate time that will give you a full eight hours before you need to wake up. Keep a diary of the times you go to sleep, the times you wake up, and make notes of how you feel when you wake up. It’s also a good idea to make notes about how you’ve felt during the day. Have you felt wide awake and on top of things? Keeping records gives you a clear picture of what happens, and when, and you may well identify a pattern that you can change to make things better.

Research shows that the average adult (over 18 years of age) requires a minimum of seven and a half to nine hours of sleep per night. Can we function on less?

Research shows that the average adult (over 18 years of age) requires a minimum of seven and a half to nine hours of sleep per night. Can we function on less? Many people do and appear to function reasonably well or believe they function well without adequate sleep. However, the research shows that we do not function at our optimum levels if we’re getting less than eight hours sleep a night. Worse yet, we don’t realise just what effect this is having on us because most of the symptoms of sleep deprivation sneak up on us. It’s not like some illness where we know immediately that we’re unwell. We sometimes go for long periods of time just living with sleep deprivation and lose track of what a really good night’s sleep feels like.

While there are many reasons why people can suffer from sleep deprivation, clearly one of the most obvious (and often the last thing anybody thinks of) would have to be having the right equipment to sleep on. Like sleep itself, the humble bed is very much taken for granted. Many people proudly talk about having the same bed they’ve had for thirty years and how it’s still as good as the day they bought it.

How bad is it after all, to feel drowsy and sleepy half way through a boring meeting in a warm room in the middle of the afternoon? Is it such a big deal if after dinner we sit in the lounger and fall asleep watching television? Doesn’t everybody have trouble getting out of bed in the morning when the alarm goes off? All of us will have experienced all of the above at some stage in our lives and that’s normal. When you regularly find yourself dozing off in meetings and falling asleep in front of the television, you’d be wise to take a good look at your sleep patterns. When you’re constantly tired and lacking in energy, you can become moody and irritable and your judgement or logic can become impaired. You may find yourself stressed much more than usual and responding very poorly to that stress. Your concentration goes out the window and simple tasks become major hurdles.

We keep our beds for far too long. The average life of a spring system according to international research is between six and eight years, after which it can lose up to twenty per cent of its resilience. At that point the springs will begin to sag right in the places where they need to be supporting you. Because we are naturally side sleepers, that’s the position most of us will try and sleep in. If the bed sags, you can imagine what lying on your side does to the spine. The level of discomfort is very high and of course the outcome is that you’ll toss and turn all night. If you’re tossing and turning all night, you won’t be getting through the full sleep cycle and there goes another reason for sleep deprivation. Make sure your mattress doesn’t sag. Make sure it’s not too firm either. You need to be comfortable on your side and if it’s too hard you’ll have pressure on the shoulder and hip which will cause tossing and turning. The more comfortable you feel on your side the better you’ll sleep and the better you sleep, the better your overall health balance will be.

ANNAVOCADO When Anna and Walter Lown acquired an avocado orchard they were overwhelmed with an abundance of ripe fruit that they collected on an almost daily basis. Not wishing to waste these ripe pickings, they begain to experiment: Their favourite creation was the avocado bath… basically mashed and sieved flesh of ripe avocados mixed into a warm bath. A pleasurable soak in a tub of warm water infused with avocado produced excellent results. The moisturising capacity of the avocados was amazing, with their skin remaining moisturised all day.

Anna and Wal soon realised that they had stumbled on something worth developing and further experimentation proved that in fact only a few drops of avocado oil were required to provide a smooth, supple and deeply moisturised skin and that the effect was lasting.

The response from both men and women who have used the moisturising serum has been fantastic. Physical improvements have been noticed within days. Simple recipes for masks, conditioning and exfoliating actually work and the active ingredient, Avocado oil, is a 100% natural product.

Many months of product trialling ensued. Soon the Annavocado Company was formed and the Lowns began promoting their magical Moisturising Serum suitable for all skin types, and made solely from New Zealand avocados.

In addition to the moisturising serum, Annavocado have two other products in their range: one being a supplement, which can be taken once or twice daily. The benefits of this include cholesterol reduction, assistance with weight loss, increased joint mobility, revitalization, and improved digestion and absorption of vitamins. The other being a spray of dried powdered avocado, made by Avocado Oil New Zealand, where perfectly ripened, top quality avocados are freezedried to create a powder which can be added to food, smoothies, and power drinks. These products have been two years in the making and the Lown’s are justifiably proud of what they have achieved. In a world full of cosmetic products promising instant results but not delivering, many consumers are now reaching for more natural products, such as those produced by Annavocado, guaranteed to work and with long lasting benefits.

Avocado oil produced in New Zealand has the highest levels of nutrients and Beta-sisterol than anywhere else in the world. This plant steroid stimulates collogen fibre regeneration, repairing aged and dry skin, firming, plumping and rejuvenating, giving a youthful glow.

MOULDING BEAUTIFUL EARS When your new baby arrives, you are just so grateful that they are healthy and normal. What about slight imperfections such as a prominent, kinked or constricted ear, either unilaterally or bilaterally? Socially and psychologically parents may worry about the future for their child, especially if the ear deformity is a family trait. The Japanese developed splinting techniques for ear deformations in the 1980s. Leading New Zealand plastic surgeon and researcher Dr Swee Tan of Wellington published his early experience from London in the mid 1990s. The goal has always been to make this a paediatric public health issue with encouragement of midwives, paediatricians and GPs to manage the early splinting and thus avoid later surgery and general anaesthesia. Despite significant publications in the plastic surgery literature, knowledge of the simple and effective non-surgical moulding of ear deformities is not generally in the public consciousness. At my Auckland practice, at 161 Gillies Ave we have been offering neonatal ear moulding for five years. Early moulding is very effective, can be taught to the parents and avoids the need for surgical correction later, which must be delayed until the child’s the ears have fully grown, by 8 – 9 years of age. If the child is presented to us in the first week of life, splintage is required for about 14 days. We have treated babies who are older from 3 – 5 months of age, but the period of splintage has to be extended for up to 12 – 15 weeks. Up to 50% of babies may have some auricular deformation within one year of birth. 86% of ear deformations are noted within the first six months by the parents. The earlier neonatal ear moulding is instituted the better the results and the shorter the period of splintage required. Non-surgical moulding with tailor-made simple splints achieves much more natural and aesthetically superior results than any of the large number of different surgical methods, in my experience. The information about ear moulding is available on our website www.parnellsurgeon.co.nz. TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF GETTING RELIEF Where should you go for help when you have hurt yourself or have woken with a crook in your neck? It can be confusing to know where to start among the many styles of practitioners. Many practitioners have a large crossover of skills, so below is just a simple overview. When you expereice pain it is important to get treatment — it will really help. A physio will treat the soft tissue, muscles, tendons and ligaments of the painful area and may even give you a few exercises. An osteo will do the same and sometimes they will address the spinal joints as well. A chiropractor focusses more on the alignment of vertebrae to allow the nervous system to work properly. All of these are great therapies. Acupuncture can help reduce pain, with needles going deep into muscles to stop spasms or break pain circuits. This is based on Chinese medicine and meridian points. Massage will help relieve and sooth sore spots. Sometimes you need a mixture of all of these to get better. Most practitioners will get you out of pain, which is the main goal of the moment. But if you find it keeps returning, then you may need to look further to find the underlying imbalances that are causing the problems. Many people try different practitioners in isolation and don’t understand why they don’t get better. The confusion can come when you go to only one modality. For example, chiropractic work is powerful but only going to the chiropractor and no one else is like only using an electrician when you are trying to build a house. The body needs some preparation to hold the adjustments. Muscle imbalance will keep pulling spinal joints out of alignment, so you get relief for a while, but it wont hold and discomfort can persists. Mobilisations may be needed as the rib cage/thoracic spine (upper back) can get ridged and stuck, keeping the spinal joints from stabilising.

THINK LONG-TERM Apart from accident or trauma, most people’s problems stem from how they hold their bodies and poor movement patterns alongside weakness and tightness. I only need to watch someone sit, stand and walk to know why they are in pain, which has generally been there for years. Accumulation over the years amplifies the pain or discomfort. A BETTER BODY I teach immaculate exercise that is prescribed for individuals, depending on their muscular imbalances, desire to get better, movement awareness and ability, health, time availibilty and much more. There is no use doing immaculate exercise at home or in the gym if you can’t integrate it into your life and work. Most people hurt themselves doing simple things such as emptying the dishwasher, vacuuming, lifting suitcases, gardening or their regular gym or sports programme. Skilled training should mimic human movement. Once the basic foundation positions are learnt with exercise, then it is imperative to mimic them in life. An example is that to learn a dead-lift (lifting pattern) you must practice lifting and moving objects correctly so you are not only getting strong but have a new ability not to hurt yourself. Of course, the more active you want to be, the stronger and more immaculate you must make your movement patterns. Everything is a commitment! You either commit to running around town getting treatment for pain, or you commit to getting your body structurally sound for the years to come.

If you don’t prepare the tissue — you prepare to fail. Awareness of new body position and internal stability are a must. Preparation could consist of stretching tight musculature, and strengthening weak, correcting postural imbalance and learning to move correctly alongside massage/physio treatment.

TOUR OF BEAUTY RACHEL HUNTER

Rachel Hunter’s Tour Of Beauty is a fascinating new television series following international supermodel Rachel Hunter embarking on a global odyssey to meet remarkable individuals from all walks of life who believe they hold the key to superior well-being and age defying looks. Verve caught up with Rachel for a quick interview!

When you were approached to be the front person for this show, I am guessing your reaction was one of complete excitement? We would love to hear more about how you felt and what you were thinking.

I would say every country taught me something different, a life lesson (or many in some cases). Tour of Beauty has helped me to see beauty as an individual, personal, spiritual and physical thing.

Tour of Beauty came at a time in my life when a lot was changing. My kids had left home and I had come down to New Zealand to shoot New Zealand’s Got Talent, where I worked with executive producer Bettina from Imagination TV. During filming, Bettina and I started to have conversations about what would later become Tour of Beauty.

It was wonderful to see in Paris (Episode 1), that men are also taking better care of themselves and that there are salons for ‘just men’. Not a woman in sight! Do you think this is becoming a world phenomenon?

Around the same time Bettina and I began talking, I got a huge map out in my room at the hotel and started to pinpoint where I had been in the world. I quickly realised I hadn’t had the opportunity to experience all of the cultures I wanted to know more about.

There was a beautiful moment in the first episode when you were interviewing the stunning 72-year-old model from Paris. As a woman nearing that age, she gave me a sense of such pure delight and a feeling that age needs to be totally embraced. How did you feel about this wonderful woman?

I thought that I’d travelled quite a lot, even to some remote places, including the Virunga Mountains where I went to see the mountain gorillas (thanks to the Born Free Foundation), and of course many remote locations around the world for work. I always loved looking into the culture of the places I visited, but wished I could look deeper. Thanks to Tour of Beauty I now have the chance. Beauty indeed appears to be far more than just a pretty face! I wonder why many (Westerners) think that if a woman has a pretty face — she is beautiful? We feel that it’s quite a shallow perception: can you tell us how during your journey, you confronted this assumption, and the kinds of questions you found yourself asking? I have to be honest, I’ve never felt true beauty to be just aesthetic. The idea of beauty is so huge and multi-faceted. To be talked to and looked at as something much deeper than what is reflected back in the mirror is important. I always want to look deeper and find out how other cultures around the world see beauty. Where did eyeliner come from? How do views on plastic surgery differ? What are the superfoods that are good for us? Is life-longevity genetic or down to what we eat? Then of course there’s our mental well-being. How do we heal emotionally from things that happen in life? Yes we can always put on mascara and lip-gloss, but nobody can hide the soul in their eyes! So how do we work on inner beauty? …the list goes on. There are many questions, but the answers are very individual and I love that!

I do not know if it is a world phenomenon, but it has been this way in Paris for some time.

To meet an elegant, spiritual, beautiful woman who is an incredible example of self-acceptance, and who is living life to the fullest, exploring the world and asking questions no matter what her age, had a huge influence on me. Rachel, your Tour of Beauty has just started airing in New Zealand. I believe you have just finished shooting the series, so I wonder if you would briefly tell our readers what you learnt and how you have grown through the experience? To never be ignorant. To appreciate all forms of connecting my mind, body and soul, and to be open to experience and all situations without judgement. My appetite for the world has become insatiable. I love these incredible people I get to meet, they’re true superstars! During the series my fridge quickly showed itself to be a bad friend. I began questioning where my produce came from. I threw everything away and started again from scratch. To be honest, meat is in my diet less as I grow older. It will more than likely be non-existent soon. But that’s my body. What I have realised is that everyone should choose what is good for them.

Eithne Curran™ Black Collection Cellulite Treatment Success 22

Authentic new hair beauty range created and made in New Zealand

“THE BEST MONEY I’VE SPENT ON MYSELF IN AGES” Are you confident about showing off your thighs this summer? Few women are unaffected by the dreaded ‘orange peel’ effects of cellulite, causing unsightly lumps and bumps on hips, buttocks, thighs and upper arms.

Health & Beauty Oct 2015

Operating from Finesse Face and Body Clinic at the Upland Shops in Remuera, UK-trained beauty specialist Sue Crake says the ultrasound for cellulite programme provides a wide range of applications to treat cellulite problems, ranging from mild orange peel effect to long-standing lumpy conditions. Sue says she and senior beauty therapist Debs Anderson are thrilled with results not thought possible without resorting to surgery. “The treatment successfully reduces cellulite, breaking it down whilst improving circulation and lymphatic drainage. Clients who have undergone a treatment programme have been highly satisfied.” Sue says that treating cellulite does not only has cosmetic benefits: the improved circulation, lymphatic drainage and improved digestion all have positive health benefits.

The launch of the Eithne Curran™ Black Collection — a significant ‘beauty for hair’ ensemble of products — is a defining moment for the creator and namesake Eithne Curran. The collection will be available in-store at Shampoo and Things throughout Auckland, 277 Broadway and online from October 5. New Zealand made, the collection is an ethically-based shampoo, conditioner and treatment created to make all hair types, for both men and women, luxuriant and healthy. Eithne’s holistic understanding of beauty and how important hair is to overall confidence has been her absolute focus for this collection. She has had a remarkably diverse career as a major independent hair and makeup creative for fashion, film, commercials, shows and branding. Ten years ago Eithne met the scientist and philanthropist Sir Ray Avery who had the ethical base and scientific understanding she was searching for. Together they developed the initial formula. The Eithne Curran Collection formula is based on an ultra mild ‘botanical cleansing system’ and includes 20 ultra pure scientifically researched plant essences that compliment the hair and skin’s natural chemistry. “I am proud my name is my brand and on my Black Collection — my name is the ultimate guarantee.”

“The bad news is that cellulite doesn’t go away by itself. Blood stops flowing through the cold, dense fatty areas on hips, thighs, buttocks and upper arms, and the circulation simply deteriorates. Untreated, the condition can result in unsightly lumpy tissue, with severely impaired circulation.”

HERE’S WHAT ONE CLIENT WROTE AFTER A COURSE OF 16 TREATMENTS: “I am really thrilled with the results and impressed with such a dramatic change in the appearance of my legs. Despite being a fit and active person and watching my diet, I had not been able to shift the ugly cellulite. I am amazed at the outstanding results. My legs are so smooth and free of all those ugly lumps and bumps that made me so selfconscious in togs and prevented me wearing soft clinging clothing. Thank you so much... the best money I have spent on myself in ages.” Regards Diana C, Remuera Finesse also offers Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for hair removal, pigmentation and capillaries, as well as skin peels, Dermapen (Collagen Induction Treatments), luxurious organic facials and a range of advanced skin treatments.

A percentage of profit from the Eithne Curran brand will go to Sir Ray’s charity Medicine Mondiale. “Sir Ray mentored me in so many ways it was a privilege to work with him.” Read more about it at www.medicinemondiale.org.

The clinic also offers the Hyaluron Skin Coach facial, where hyaluronic acid is massaged into the skin for instant hydration and plumping.

We often get asked, what’s new in the cosmetic medicine field? And as it is such an evolving and exciting area of medicine, there’s always something! We have improved our techniques of injecting dermal fillers. We no longer chase lines, now we are performing liquid mini face-lifts and creating sharper cheeks, jaws and chins by creating definition and recountouring. New soft products allow us to give a very natural look, as they blend with the body’s tissue seamlessly. A new five-point lift brought to us by a prominent Korean plastic surgeon, Mr Peter Huang is being used to not only lift and beautify faces but also to improve the one sided facial paralysis in people who suffer from Bells Palsy. It’s always great to be able to help people suffering from this debilitating condition. Not only do we offer Platelet Rich Plasma injections, but now we also have the latest in anti-ageing called Factor 4. Factor 4 contains four times more growth factors than any other blood product brand. Factor 4 treatment naturally slows collagen breakdown, delaying the ageing process, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and improving the overall skin texture.

WHAT’S NEW AT CLINIC 42

From our beauty therapy department run by our expert therapist Jess, we have the ‘superior facial’. This ninety minute experience using scientifically proven products includes needling, a mask, a vitamin infusion and LED treatment. Revitaliser treatment, also known as an ‘internal moisturiser’ is where hyaluronic acid is injected very superficially in microamounts into the dermis of the skin, boosting overall appearance, creating more collagen and improving texture and lusture. A great pick-me-up after the long winter. All our doctors at Clinic 42 have diplomas in cosmetic medicine and belong to the NZ Society of Cosmetic Medicine. Dr Ellen Selkon and Dr Joanna Romanovska are on the executive committee of the society and also train doctors and nurses in this field.

LOUISE GRAY SKINCARE REVEALS YOUR GUIDELINE TO GREAT SKIN. The look, strength, youth and health of your skin can be optimised with the correct care, which is what Louise Gray Skincare is all about. Yes, you can buy a tube of lipstick at the clinic, but the main focus of the business is — as the name would suggest — the care of the skin. IT’S THEIR PASSION From clinic manager, Nicola Ogles (a trained skincare pro), to skincare therapists Beverley Danyali and Roche Sanson, to former registered nurse and owner, Louise Gray, it’s all about what’s happening within and without your body and how it reflects on your skin.

“The appearance of your skin is a direct reflection of the health of your body.” - Louise Gray -

It’s why you’ll find part of the skincare prescription at Louise Gray’s is taking

flaxseed oil daily, keeping up your water intake and adding supplements to your regime. “It’s amazing the difference we’ve seen flaxseed oil bring to the skin,” says Louise. “You really can see it become more hydrated and stronger, the capillaries even out. It also creates a better result with hair removal like waxing.” Another part of the ‘script’ at Louise Gray’s is having your pictures taken on the Reveal Skin Imager. It’s incredibly… well….revealing. The high-tech machine reveals the amount of pigmentation (also known as sun damage and brown spots), redness and broken capillaries occurring in your skin. They may not be highly visible to the naked eye, but they’re there all the same and they’re what can stand between you and a beautiful, radiant complexion. Yes, the Reveal Skin Imager can be a little bit confronting, but it’s an incredible tool in the quest for fabulous skin. Put it together with advanced skincare, in-the-know skincare therapists, a good diet, a little bit of flaxseed oil, lots of water and — let’s not forget that often forgotten skincare tool — deep breathing, to help keep stress at bay and your body nicely oxygenated. “All Disease Begins in the Gut.” - Hippocrates, Born c. 460BC -

HM Nails

26 2 Business/ Health Education & Beauty & Society Oct Sept 2015 2015

I so wish I had said this first, but Hippocrates got the jump on me. He was born in 460BC and is the father of modern medicine.

Having your nails done is something one does to make oneself look and feel better. But all too often just the opposite happens, which is why leading podiatrist Lisa Hinchcliff has established HM Nails.

Ever heard of the Hippocratic Oath that all doctors take? I think Hippocrates would be very disappointed to see where we have ended up. His focus on the gut as the major cause of disease seems to have got lost along the way.

Concerned about the numbers of patients coming to her Greenlane Podiatry Clinic with fungal infections that they had contracted in nail bars, Lisa decided to do something about it.

Here are some interesting facts about the gut: • • • • • • •

1 out of 10 cases of mental illness are directly related to the function of the gut. Most skin conditions start in the gut. Many headaches start with the gut. Over 80% of the immune system is in the gut. Many auto immune diseases start in the gut. All weight issues start in the gut. Most diseases start with gut issues.

How do you know if your gut is working properly? All you have to do is ask your body. Do you get bloated after eating? Is there excessive gas (burping and the other)? Do you suffer from constipation or diarrhoea? Do you have reflux? Do you get pain or little warning when you just have to go? Do you have food allergies and would you know if you did? Do you have persistent headaches? Are you depressed? Is your immune system compromised? The list goes on. Your gut performs many functions: it processes about 25 tons of food in a lifetime; it makes more immune responses in a day than the rest of the immune system does in a lifetime; it produces key nutrients; it is the prime site of detoxifications and it makes 80% of your happy chemicals; but only if it is working well. The gut is complex. Our ancestors did not have to worry about how their gut was working, because of their natural diet and lifestyle. Unfortunately today we eat processed foods, ingest chemicals, don’t take in sufficient nutrients and have poor eating habits. The result is poor digestion and assimilation of food, not getting the right nutrients, fostering gut bacteria imbalance, insufficient stomach acid and digestive enzymes, and parasites and fungal infections. These things are the building blocks for chronic disease. Unfortunately we cannot see what is going on in our gut, so we ignore it. The great thing about the body is that it soldiers on, doing the best it can. It whispers messages, that things are not right, but most of us just pop another anti-acid, laxatives, antidepressant or drug of choice. It is not until the whisper turns into a scream that we are forced to take notice. For more information on gut health and what you can do about it, visit www.bewell.net.nz.

“So many people were coming in with infections that they’d picked up when they’d had their nails done,” says Lisa. “So many were young girls too. It was terrible. We tried to educate the public and the industry, but the problem was getting worse.” The solution was to bring her two decades of experience in the health sector into the beauty industry and open the first sterile nail salon. “We sterilise our instruments at HM Nails the same way that we sterilise our instruments at the Greenlane Podiatry Clinic,” says Lisa. “It takes time but it’s the only way to guarantee no cross-infection.” Preventing cross-infection is the key to stopping the spread of nail fungus and other more sinister blood-borne diseases like Hepatitis or HIV. As well as a strict sterilising regime, there’s no sharing of nail brushes or files.

“The solution was to bring her two decades of experience in the health sector into the beauty industry and open the first sterile nail salon.” If it seems like a lot of fuss about a little fungus, remember that getting rid of a fungal nail infection is a long and costly process. Greenlane Podiatry uses a laser, which is the most effective treatment known, but even then it can take up to 24 months for the fungus to die and the infected nail to grow out. But don’t go into HM Nails expecting a cold, clinical look — there’s plenty of glamour. “We’ve gone for a French salon kind of look downstairs in the main area and upstairs we have our Mirror Room and Asian-themed room for special treatments,” says Lisa. While HM Nails is still a small business, Lisa’s long-term goal is huge: to change the way everybody in the nail industry approaches cleanliness and sterility to stop the spread of nail fungus and other nasties — one nail at a time.

THE ‘WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR’ DILEMMA

Fashion Oct 2015

A few years ago I worked with a woman who owned seven business suits. When we were going through her wardrobe, I expressed surprise, not at the number, but rather the ordered ‘all in a row’ way in which they hung in her wardrobe. She explained that she would dress each day by taking a suit from the right, and at the end of the day hang it on the left. This meant that in a five day work week she wouldn’t double up, nor over a period of weeks would she wear the same suit on the same day – avoiding the, ‘she’s wearing the blue suit – it must be Tuesday’ comments. While admittedly an anathema to a creative fashion type, I had to admire the simplicity of this approach. After all, much of the work I do in a clients’ wardrobe is to take the guesswork out what to wear each day, and in her own way this client had nailed it. Studies show that in a world where we are required to make many decisions in a day, every decision made erodes our ability to make further decisions later. Apparently this is why that seemingly simple after-work trip to the supermarket is so exhausting. Psychologists call this ‘decision fatigue’. As a personal stylist, I build wardrobes that simplify the daily ‘what am I going to wear?’ dilemma. Many clients will tell me they spend ‘too much time’ trying to make what should be an easy decision, and for some it causes stress. This is why many of us resort to wearing the same outfits over and over. It also explains why we usually only wear around 20% of what is hanging in our wardrobes.

To create an easy wardrobe, start with colour. Simple neutrals like grey and navy and taupe make life simple. Choose jackets, skirts or pants in these tones. These don’t have to be block colour, a print that is ‘mainly’ one of these neutrals will work well, too. Add to these some basic tops in either print or block colour and you’ll find the simplicity you crave. Add texture for personality and to avoid the ‘that’s a different shade of black so won’t go together’ issue. Hang all of your jackets, all of your skirts and all your trousers together. Then, it’s an easy top half + bottom half + jacket equation each day. While this may not make for the worlds’ most exciting wardrobe, it will make life easier in the morning, allowing you space to make more important decisions later in the day. Words: Jackie O’Fee

The perfect wardrobe is one where you can choose any top half and it will work with any bottom half in your wardrobe.

AERIAL INTELLIGENCE On a glorious sunny spring day above Totara Park, landing jetliners systematically traverse the distant blue horizon, but in the foreground a different flying contraption is capturing everyone’s attention — and some rather epic shots and footage. It’s called the 3DR Solo and it’s the world’s first smart drone.

“We wanted to create a product that enables everyone from your average Joe to the pros to get really dynamic, cinematic shots,” says Brad King of 3D Robotics sales and marketing team. “This is the first of its kind to market, and we’re very proud of it.” This average Joe can certainly attest to the ease of piloting this drone. The Solo is flown via a video game-like controller to which your smartphone attaches, meaning you get a bird’s eye view through the screen, all synced through an app. “On board computers allow for software updates, built-in flight modes and smart shots,” says Brad. A slew of cool commands include ‘Orbit’, whereby the drone circles an object or site for an iconic wrap-around shot; ‘Follow’, which enables hands-free control as the drone tags after you like a loyal dog; and ‘Selfie’, which puts you at the centre of a scenic aerial shot. It’s all captured on GoPro’s HERO4 camera. One of the drone’s most impressive settings is definitely ‘Cable Cam’. This allows the user to create an imaginary line through the air along which the

drone will travel back and forth at will. It means you could string a route across a shoreline or mountain track and film or photograph as you surf or mountain bike alone. What’s more, it has been designed with an ingenious axis which allows the camera to automatically adjust with the drone’s flight path ensuring that the lens always remains pointed at its subject. “It’s such an intelligent system,” adds Brad. “We come from a background of years of shooting professionally on movies and television shows and it has always been a two-man operation — a pilot and camera operator. To perfect dynamic moves is complex and would take years of practice. Our system is good to go out of the box and anyone can fly and control it.” And for all those average Joes out there concerned about the possibility of crashing this high-tech piece of kit, fear not for it’s virtually impossible. “If you lose control of the Solo the controller will vibrate as an alert and the drone will automatically return home and slowly land itself where it took off,” says Brad. Cathedral in safe hands, thanks to Matrix Security

39 Business/ Education & Society

Regrettably, even the most revered of sites require security in this day and age. Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral – where many of us celebrate, rejoice or mourn — can also fall prey to some in the community who fail to respect property or people. Matrix Security has recently won the contract to protect the Cathedral and has also chosen to go even further and provide significant additional support to ensure that some of our most precious buildings and artefacts are there for the people of Auckland to enjoy, safely. “We were delighted to award our security business to Matrix Security who, like us, believe that safer communities nurture growth and confidence,” says Dean Jo-Kelly Moore. “Without their additional generosity and their bespoke solution we would be hardpressed to ensure that all the Diocese’s property in the Parnell area is safe and secure for the use of the wider Auckland population.” Matrix Security is a business founded on protecting the people, buildings and communities they inhabit. “For our commercial customers our security solutions focus on supporting the proper functioning of the business, ensuring business premises, infrastructure and staff have continuity. For residential customers security extends to ensuring their family, home and assets are safe and secure,” says Scott Carter from Matrix Security.

Oct 2015

Matrix Security prides itself on having the best team and systems in place to prevent theft and damage to people and their property. Our Green Reflector Service has genuinely helped customers feel more secure — and that extends to their personal safety and that of the neighbourhood too.

With the Holy Trinity Cathedral now safely in the hands of the team at Matrix Security, Aucklanders can expect to be able to enjoy some of the city’s most inspirational spaces and resources for years to come.

- Scott Carter, Matrix Security -

“We’ve seen extraordinary changes in communities with the advent of our Green Reflector service – where individual homes and neighbourhoods engage Matrix Security to provide a 24hr on-call security service. The risk of serious crime is significantly reduced with regular patrol vehicles acting as a deterrent, and potential issues being dealt with by our officers before an event rises. We’re also receiving anecdotal evidence that our service is resulting in a lower cost for claims, which helps keep insurance premiums lower. Our clients also simply enjoy feeling safer,” says Scott. That’s good news for homeowners, as results of a recent AA Insurance home security survey found burglaries are three times more likely to occur when you’re away from the home while at work or out shopping, than when you’re on holiday; and of the 1,100 Kiwis interviewed 15% were still in the house, when the break-in occurred. While home values are a super-hot topic right now in the country’s largest city, this sense of safety and security in the communities Matrix Security protects is just one of the benefits accruing to individuals and organisations of all shapes and sizes. “Whether assessing the security needs of an individual home, or a large organisation our approach is the same — we firstly advise and design a security solution and then monitor, protect and respond with the best possible service. Each of our customers requires different solutions — and we work hard to ensure that the best systems and people are in place,” says Scott.

I only use quality products and am offering a Samsung 850 EVO 250Gb SSD as a good option for most laptops and desktops, for $189.95 (price may vary according to supply and availability). An external enclosure for the old drive would be from $26 to $45.00 depending on the hard drive size (2.5” or 3.5”). This special would also be at $95.00 to clone the hard drive, install the new one and install the old drive to an external enclosure if required. We are all about making long-term relationships with our customers. We give ongoing advice and support. Often for free!

We’re into the last quarter of the year — the weather is showing some encouraging signs, the shops are busy and most of us are fixated on the games of the Rugby World Cup — there really is nothing like seeing people share a common sense of kiwi-ness.

At the end of September, the NBA held its Annual General Meeting. Following an extensive change programme over the past 12 months, some positive results are now being reaped. For the year end to June 2015, Newmarket’s overall retail spend has leapt up 7.5% — this is the best year’s result since before the GFC. As in most years there were some changes to the members of the board. Board members from the previous year: Bridget Smith (sbm legal), Megan Sadgrove (Smith & Caughey), Carl Sowter (Marley Loft), James Nelson (Westfield) were joined by new appointees Mark Hill-Rennie (ANZ), Shane Gorst (Make A Wish), Brian Chen (Bliss Reflexology) and Rachel Dovey (Bayleys Real Estate). Joanna Legat (Isabel Harris), Ryan Watkins (GrabOne) and Greg Holland (Greg Holland Jewellery), all stepped down and were thanked for their contributions. We have more superb brands joining the Newmarket stable including AS Colour, who have moved onto Osborne Lane, Nine West have opened in Westfield Newmarket in the old Ziera site and the unmissable Look Sharp launched their Broadway store a few weeks ago — a one-stop-shop for all of your party needs and don’t forget Halloween is only a few weeks away! On a personal note, I recently required surgery and had firsthand experience as a patient at Auckland Hospital. We really are so very lucky to have such world class facilities and services on tap and on our door step. So to the staff on Ward 75 at Auckland Hospital — thank you, you are simply amazing.

KAYAKING the Kiwi Coastline

“Yes, I will be thrown out of my kayak, but you climb back in. It’s just like life.”

“You can only be asked ‘are you crazy?’ so many times before you do actually start questioning your own sanity,” says Lynn Paterson. “But it’s just a case of turning people’s negative slights into positive fuel and drawing strength from it.”

Lynn’s not crazy in the literal sense. Not one bit. What she is, however, is crazily determined, as she’s about to embark on an incredible journey that will see her kayak the Kiwi coastline. “It’s something I’ve always thought about doing but never told anyone about it until a few years ago,” says Lynn, the financial controller for a design and build exhibition company, Veni Vidi Vici Ltd - V3. “My boss once asked me where I would be at 50 and I said, ‘well, I won’t be working here for you!’ He asked what I’d be doing instead and I told him kayaking around the country. He thought it was a fantastic idea. He’s been very supportive.” - Lynn Paterson -

I ask Lynn, who has previously competed in a host of endurance events, if she is apprehensive about the upcoming isolation. “No, I like my alone time. If you were a social bunny, then you probably wouldn’t want to be doing something like this anyway. I’ve already spent many hours training solo.” The kayaker will have a support van following her around the coast, but there will be times, sometimes days on end, when it will not be able to reach her, such as when she ventures through Fiordland. There may be some company in the form of wildlife though. “Hopefully I’ll see some whales,” Lynn says. “I see dolphins a lot out on the Hauraki. I haven’t seen orcas up close yet and everyone always asks about sharks, but they’re just another fish. I’ve seen plenty while diving and the plan is to hook up with the guys down on Stewart Island and go down in a cage.”

There have been plenty of offers from fellow kayakers to come out and meet Lynn along the way. “Everyone is welcome,” she says. “It’s always nice to see a smiling face when you’re out paddling. We’re hoping to get some paddling gurus and celebs to come and join us to talk about how exercise helps clear the mind. How it’s not just for the body, but for your well being too.” Lynn, whose son suffers from depression, is raising money for mental health charity Live More Awesome: “Being out there gives you a lot of time to think. The journey will be a very solo one, much like looking after someone who is depressed. I wrote to the charity asking about shining a light on the carers, those who can’t stay at home all day, who still also have to go to work all day. They need someone to talk to too.” Lynn hopes to average 30km each day for 180 days. She’ll be using a regular sea kayak and emergency equipment includes flares and a personal locator beacon, which when activated sets off a satellitecontrolled alarm for (relatively) immediate assistance. “But, I’d be mortified if I had to use it,” admits Lynn. “I shouldn’t ever be much more than 5kms from the coastline and I’d rather swim back than be rescued.” That’s no surprise to hear. “People say I’ll be a different person when I’m done, but I think I’m a different person already! I think more women should be doing stuff like this. I don’t see why there is so much fear. Yes, I will be thrown out of my kayak, but you climb back in. It’s just like life.” Follow Lynn’s journey at www.redznzjourney.com/blog. Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Water water everywhere! 2AM SUNDAY MORNING EMERGENCY

I answer all calls, even when they come in at 2am on a Sunday morning. If tenants phone me at this hour it has to be an urgent problem. And yes, it was an emergency: water cascading out of the kitchen ceiling downstairs. Fortunately the tenants were woken by the noise of the gushing water. The tenants went downstairs to discover deep water on the floor and running down the walls from the ceiling like a waterfall. Fortunately by the time they phoned me they had turned the water off at the mains and placed buckets under the drips. That was all that could be done. So, back to bed at 3am and by 7am I was around at the property with an emergency plumber. He cut a hole in the ceiling and the split pipe was found and repaired. Goodness, a six inch piece of pipe with a small slit can do a lot of damage! The drawers and cupboards were full of water, the bench top was soaked and the cascading water flooded onto the floor, then into the dining room and onto the carpet in the lounge. I sent the tenants off to have breakfast on Just Rentals and organised the cleaners for the following day, and the carpet man to suck and dry the carpet. We informed the owners too, as well as the insurance company. A builder was organised to remove the sodden ceiling, as well as a plasterer and painter. Wow! That was quite a start to my week. I caught up on much needed sleep the following night, and felt kind of satisfied in the knowledge that another problem had been sorted. Words: Sylvia Lund Director

The silly season is almost upon us and it’s a time when many of us start to get nervous about not only what we have to get done but also our finances. Kiwis opened their wallets more than ever last festive season. We smashed all previous records with Paymark processing $263.5 million on its network alone on Christmas Eve, up 10.5% on the previous year! At its peak they processed 156 transactions per second! Here are my top tips for making the most of your finances over this cash intensive time! • Set a budget for the upcoming months, factoring in presents, special food, entertainment, travel etc. along with your normal everyday payments. If there is a deficit, you have to make sacrifices or cut backs. • Make a list of everyone you need to buy for and put a dollar limit by each present. Take the list with you when you shop and try and stick to it. • Cash is powerful. Use it, you’ll spend less. Try to avoid credit cards or store cards. Even if you can pay it back in January, it’s likely you’ll spend more than you wanted to and easily lose track of where you are at with your finances. If you can’t pay it back in full, ask yourself, do you really want to be paying the price of the gift plus 20-30% interest on top of this? The answer should be no. • Start early. Don’t be that person running madly around the mall on Christmas Eve looking stressed and panic buying. The earlier you start, the more likely you’ll be able to get a bargain and find a special present. Special and thoughtful does not have to equate to expensive. • Organise your overseas gifts even earlier! I know how much the express fees sting — you often end up paying more than the gift in postage. Check out https://www.nzpost.co.nz/personal/ sending-within-nz/mailing-dates-times for this year’s deadlines. • Many families have an agreed limit on how much to spend or who they are buying for, for example only buying for the kids or doing a secret Santa. Start negotiating your limits. You’ll find pretty much everyone is in the same boat and relieved to have boundaries! • Whether visiting friends/family or hosting yourself, everyone bringing a plate or pot luck is the way forward. This shares the load, everyone is happy they are contributing and no one person or family is overloaded. Christmas is a special time of year. It is about giving, but most importantly it’s about the people you are with, not spending beyond your means and having to pay for it for the next 12 months or beyond. Planning in advance and sticking to a budget should be about enjoying this time and minimising financial stress and pressure. If you are having trouble getting your finances in order, seek help, it’s never too late. Words: Katie Wesney In the September 2015 issue of Verve, Hannah McQueen was misquoted. VIBRANT TEMPO FESTIVAL KICK STARTS SPRING!

46 Business/ Education & Society Oct 2015

Tempo Dance Festival is back from 30 September – 18 October at Auckland’s Q Theatre and its 12th birthday festival is an absolute celebration. A celebration of the many different styles of dance, the success of New Zealand’s creative movers and a celebration of the incredible zest for life that dancing exuberates. There’s so much to see this October, but a special mention goes to the creative force of Footnote who this year celebrate 30 years of work with 30 Forward. Founding director Deirdre Tarrant returns to curate the first half, bringing zesty highlights from fulllength works commissioned for the Forte series over the last ten years. Renowned choreographer Malia Johnston fuels the second half with a new work, drawing on the company’s history and looking forward to the exciting future. Catch them on 15 and 17 October. A signature of Auckland’s Tempo is the range of curated showcases, where professional and emerging choreographers present shorter works for an imaginative evening of dance. Showcases enable the audience to see a wide variety and allow artists to engage and share their creative endeavours with one another. On 14 October, Tempo presents PRIME in which established choreographers present fresh new works. Provocative, absurd, hilarious, cheeky and deeply touching, this year’s PRIME treats audiences with new works by Sarah Knox, Kristian Larsen & Georgie Goater, Touch Compass Dance Company and Brigitte Knight.

WAIHEKE WALKING FESTIVAL Get a spring in your step this November with the Waiheke Walking Festival.

The Waiheke Walking Festival is pleased to be able to announce that registrations for this year’s event are now open. Held over nine days, 14-22 November, this is New Zealand’s largest free walking event and definitely not one to be missed. So what makes the Waiheke Walking Festival so popular? Think incredibly beautiful coastal scenery, very friendly local guides, fascinating topics discussed by knowledgeable experts, award winning wine, delicious food, accommodation to suit all and you have the recipe for the perfect walking holiday. Festival Coordinator, Denise Whitfield, tells us that, “every year the Waiheke Walking Festival gets bigger and better and 2015 is no exception. We are absolutely delighted with this year’s programme and are thrilled that there will be even more on offer for our visitors in addition to the walks — local businesses are offering some very generous travel, stay, eat and play discounts and special events for our Walking Festival visitors.” When we spoke to Denise about the programme for this year she reminded us that one of the unique features of the Waiheke Walking Festival was the opportunity to participate in walks across private land. Generous landowners open their properties exclusively for the Festival and Denise was delighted to share with us that several new private properties will feature in this year’s programme. Another unique enticement for participating in the Waiheke Walking Festival is the walk themes. This year will see walks about wine, olives, all kinds of local history, glow worm night walks, ecological restoration, mindfulness, medicinal plants, photography and the list goes on.

New Zealand’s largest dance festival, featuring over 700 artists in 50 events over 19 days.

October is BREAST CANCER MONTH

i EIGHT WOMEN A DAY ARE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER IN NZ — 3000 A YEAR

47 HOW MANY LIKE ME?

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) is challenging New Zealanders to take action against breast cancer this October and help raise funds for awareness and education programmes, potentially life-saving research, medical equipment and services to support women with breast cancer. Taking action can be as active or as leisurely as people choose, with many events offering a chance to get involved, for example: •

Sign the NZBCF petition asking the New Zealand Government to extend free mammograms to women aged up to 74 — download the form at www.nzbcf.org. nz/OlderWomen. We hope to present the petition to parliament during October, but first we need to reach 10,000 signatures.

Estee Lauder Companies Pink Star Walks — Auckland (October 17) — twilight walks include 5km and 10km options. Register at www.pinkstarwalk.co.nz.

Pink Ribbon Street Appeal, nationwide Friday October 9 and Saturday October 10 — give two hours collecting for the street appeal in your area, or give a gold coin donation to a collector near you — www.takeaction.org.nz.

BRA-Day, Tuesday October 20 — Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day — the NZBCF presents a free workshop at Auckland University Medical School for the public and medical profession, led by top reconstructive surgeons, discussing options for breast reconstruction after mastectomy — www.nzbcf.org.nz.

Pink for a Day — a chance for workplaces across New Zealand to go pink for a day and raise funds for breast cancer research — www.PinkForADay.co.nz.

Around 3000 women (and around 20 men) will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Funds raised this October will be used to support all areas of the NZBCF’s work. This includes educating women about signs of breast cancer and how to check their breasts, and informing women over 40 about the importance of early detection through mammograms. The NZBCF is one of the largest funders of breast cancer research in New Zealand, including research into new treatments, studies of how breast cancer grows and spreads, and improving access to clinical trials. The Foundation also funds medical equipment for New Zealand’s hospitals, training of doctors and other medical professionals, the Pink Caravan (taking breastcare nurses to small towns), services to support women recovering from or living with breast cancer, and the 0800 BC NURSE advice line. For a full list of events to support the NZBCF during Breast Cancer Month, visit WWW.TAKEACTION.ORG.NZ.

In an average year, about 12 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their 20s; 150 in their 30s; and 550 in their 40s. Then the numbers really ramp up — 750 women will be diagnosed in their 50s, then another 750 in their 60s. The numbers might look smaller in the 70s — 400 women a year — but in reality, our breast cancer risk remains as high as it was at 50. One woman a day is diagnosed below the free screening age of 45, so it’s important for all women over 20 to know the normal look and feel of their breasts, and to report changes to their doctor. For any concerns about your breast health, call the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation nurse advice line 0800 BC NURSE (0800 22 68773) Time for New Zealand to aim higher — focus on new 10 year survival data. Often, you’ll read about five-year cancer survival rates, but the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation believes that’s not good enough. Ten-year survival is a better indicator of treatment effectiveness, and it’s important also to look at how many women are disease-free. New survival data from the Auckland Breast Cancer Register, funded by the NZBCF, shows that 82% of breast cancer patients are disease-free after five years, but that drops to 73% at the ten-year mark. The importance of mammograms is also emphasised in the 10 year survival data — according to the register 92% of women with mammogram-detected cancers are alive 10 years after diagnosis, compared with only 75% of those who find a lump. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF DYING OF BREAST CANCER: •

• •

Know the normal look and feel of your breasts, and report changes to your doctor. Check out TLC — Touch Look Check — the NZBCF’s new video, featuring Shortland Street star Jacqueline Nairn telling you how to check your breasts at www.anychanges.co.nz. The NZBCF recommends women consider annual mammograms from age 40, and you should have a mammogram every two years from age 50 for as long as you’re in good health. Maintain a healthy BMI after menopause, and limit alcohol to one drink a day. Research suggests regular exercise may help prevent breast cancer.

It’s kind of strange that an image of a floppy disc is still the ‘save’ icon of choice in the digital age, especially considering there is now a whole generation who have never even seen a floppy disc, let alone saved a picture, document or music file to one. It’s a bit like if Apple had decided to use an image of a cassette tape (remember those!) as their ‘play’ button upon the release of their iPod. Come to think of it, who even uses iPods anymore? The world has digitalised almost beyond comprehension. In 1990, there were 12.5 million mobile phone subscribers; by the turn of the century that had risen to 1.2 billion; by 2010, 4 billion – over two-thirds of the global population. Now, there are nearly as many mobile phone subscriptions as there are people. Just 2.8 million were connected to the worldwide web in 1990 and by 2010 it was over a quarter of the people on earth. Today, 3 billion are connected and in five years’ time there will be a billion more. Cisco estimates that by 2020, there will be over 50 billion connected devices. It’s conceivable that at no other point in human history have things changed so much, so fast, depending on which side of the digital divide you fall of course. For those of a certain, younger age, however, such swift changes are the status quo. There is a name for those born since the digital revolution, those who know not of world without smartphones, humblebragging, hashtags, YouTube, selfies and Google maps. That name is ‘digital natives’ and it was first coined by American writer Marc Prensky in 2001. He split society into two camps: those whose lives straddle the technological boom he named ‘digital immigrants’, with ‘digital natives’ being everyone born since. “Digital natives view the world horizontally, in equalitarian terms,” writes Jeff DeGraff in the Huffington Post. “Rather than dividing the world into hierarchies, they see everyone as existing on an equal level. They embrace the benefits of sharing things and ideas with each other and, in doing so, they cross boundaries.” Digital natives, he goes on, are generally suspicious of cultural and social norms such as marriage, religion and government: “In opting out of these institutions, they have declared themselves microsegments of one – free agents.” Digital natives are likely to be more efficient than digital immigrants, to be less bound by the constrictions of tradition. DeGraff then goes on to make an interesting point. Though the ‘natives’ appear the antithesis of the ‘immigrants’, rebelling against so many of their ways, there remains the paradox that “digital immigrants, for the most part, invented the complex technologies and systems that the digital natives use fluently… In this way, digital natives and digital immigrants must grow to work together and learn from each other.” While digital natives feel at home in the new connected world, for many digital immigrants it was like starting all over again, akin, almost to learning a new language. How many times have we witnessed celebrities or politicians of a certain age trip up so publically due to some email or social media faux pas? An older friend of mine would regularly type people’s names into her Facebook status update box instead of the search box above so each one of her Facebook friends could easily see who she had been stalking. Prensky has a name for such things too: ‘digital stupidity’. “People get frightened by change and they should be,” he tells CNN. “… The young people live in the context; the older people see the context changing and struggle.” We are not, Pensky warns, simply experiencing a transitional phase, but rather an ever-changing norm: “People will always be behind now and that will be a stress they have to cope with.” Perhaps digital ignorance really is bliss; unless your ignorance goes viral.

Natives and Immigrants of our Ever Changing World

STILL TOPP Now into their fourth decade in show business, the Topp Twins are as popular — and as busy — as ever. I caught up with Lynda Topp who was in Auckland to attend the Silver Scrolls with her sister last month and began by asking what the secret to their longevity is. “I don’t know whether there’s a secret,” she says. “I think you’ve just got to enjoy it, to want to do it and not stick to the same thing. We do live stuff — music, comedy, television — always something different. You can’t just keep touring in New Zealand, the audience isn’t big enough.” You’re famed for your involvement with various causes over the years too. Do you think there is still that passion for protest in society? “Things are different now. Most of the things that we were passionate about — being nuclear free, Maori rights, the homosexual law reform bill — have changed. We won. Now it’s harder for people to protest in a social way, on the streets, it’s all done on the computer from their homes. Things are changing much faster now than they were in the 1980s. But I think people will always protest in this country. When New Zealanders believe in something, when they have an opinion, they do stand up. Not too many sit on the fence here.” It was, laughs Lynda, in the unlikely setting of the military that the twins honed some of their own protesting skills: “When we left home we never seriously considered the army as being a long-term career, but we noticed that if we signed up to the territorials then we got a trip to the South Island!” The sisters, still in their teens, did their basic training at Burnham military camp at a time when, Lynda says, women in the forces were still treated like second-class citizens. “Once, we travelled in the back of a truck overnight to be told that we weren’t allowed to take part in a parade the next day because we were dressed differently to the men, but they were the uniforms that were given to us. There were about 400 blokes and we were the only two girls so we threatened to march behind the platoon carrying placards saying women weren’t allowed on parade! During that time we also learnt how to deal with razor wire which came in handy for the Springbok tour protests, so the army did prepare us for later battles.” Having each other eased the burden of many a battle. “We spent weeks touring the country when the homosexual law reform bill was being passed,” says Lynda. “When we came out, we were about 19 and touring at the time, but the first year, no newspaper would print the word ‘lesbian’.” The next year, the ban was lifted and everywhere we went the headlines would be about these

‘Lesbian Twins’! But it was important that we stood up. Jools has said before that if you’re hiding something then you can’t give 100% of yourselves when performing and we always wanted to do that. Coming out was easier for us — having each other. We’ve always stuck by each other. We’ve been through a lot.” Their biggest battle came in 2006 when Jools was diagnosed with breast cancer. Of all the twins’ honours, accolades and achievements, nothing means more to Lynda than when she was able to dedicate her time to caring for her sister. “When it comes to health, nothing else matters,” says Lynda. “When you’re growing up together, then work together, there are times when you have disagreements, but since Jools was diagnosed, that doesn’t happen anymore. We just get on with our lives and be happy.” Did you ever consider calling time on your careers? “No, never. You can’t ever give up. You have to stay positive and say you have to get through this, and we did. Some people don’t make it, but we did. Jools did and we will celebrate that for the rest of our lives.” Their latest television show, Topp Country, is also a celebration. It’s a celebration of New Zealand, its people, and its food that sees the sisters travel the length and breadth of the nation in search of crop and culinary inspiration. “We were really keen to do some comedy and music shows and hadn’t really thought about food,” recalls Lynda. “I said, ‘let’s propose food as that’s all you ever see on television now,’ so we sent it in to the office and that’s the one they accepted. Then we had to figure out what to do! We really wanted to visit people, rock up to their house and find out what they were up to, what they were growing and have good meal with them.” What new things did you learn about New Zealand? “There is an amazing movement of people out there who really do want to grow their own food, who are passionate about it and want to educate others. But, it’s not just about the food, but about being healthier too, and raising healthier animals. It’s not all about big farms, lots of little places do amazing things — you can grow veggies in the city. You know, we discovered so much during that show and it was only once we were on the road, filming, that we realised that there are just so many great people with great stories to tell.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Taking stock, one year on 50 Business/ Education & Society

What are the top three things you should do to improve your chances of renting?

It is one year since National won the 2014 election and went on to form another strong, stable government.

Oct 2015

I’ve been reflecting on a busy year, and our achievements. They include free doctor’s visits and prescriptions for under-13s, extended paid-parental leave, and the first increase in benefits for family households in more than 40 years. At the election we promised to deliver an extra 4000 elective operations a year. We’ve exceeded that target by already performing an extra 5000 operations such as hip and knee surgery. ACC levy cuts are helping car owners and we’re continuing to invest heavily in vital infrastructure such as broadband, roads, rail, schools and hospitals, and the rebuild of Christchurch. Despite market volatility around the world and the recent drop in global dairy prices we have a solidly performing economy delivering jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders. The latest financial data shows New Zealand has recorded its 18th consecutive quarter of economic growth with the economy growing 0.4 per cent in the three months to 30 June, and 2.4 per cent for the year. New Zealand has also recorded 11 consecutive quarters of employment growth, with 69,000 more jobs created in the past year. The average annual wage is now over $57,000 – an increase of $10,000 since National came into office.

New Zealand has recorded its 18th consecutive quarter of economic growth with the economy growing 0.4 per cent in the three months In my own portfolio, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, we’ve passed a number of important bills, implemented new financial markets and consumer protection regulations and promoted this government’s desire to raise levels of financial capability. There’s always more to do. Later this year we will begin our review of our competition laws. I’m proud to be part of a government led by a strong and reliable Prime Minister who keeps his word and delivers practical policies, which benefit families while strengthening the engine-room of the economy for a better future.

DID YOU KNOW…? 1. 2. 3.

Tenants rate new paint and carpet as number one. Running a close second is insulation and heating, or with apartments aircon/heat pumps. Value for money comes in at third place.

October and November is that time of year when a lot of tenancies are coming to an end and you need to stand out in the crowd. Competition will be tough and you need to make sure you are presenting your investment at its best. Wanting to attract the best rent, and the best tenants?

— QUINOVIC VIADUCT RECOMMENDS —

1.

Paint areas that need to be upgraded and when doing this consider if it’s worthwhile doing the whole apartment or home. A job that’s just a patch up risks looking tacky. Presenting a quality finished investment apartment/home will stand out from the others.

2. Carpet check and review. If it’s more than 10 years old maybe it’s time to replace it. Carpet in rental investments tends

to have a life of around 10 to 15 years. If there is only a little wear this could be resolved with a rug, tiles or simply replacement in one room only. Yet once again, it’s about presentation. What will make the investment look its best?

3.

Photos done professionally will make your investment look its very best, and I always recommend you also supply a floor plan, as this really shows size, location of photos and layout of rooms to outlook. Engaging a professional management company to work for you helps in making sure you get the right advice on rental amounts, quality tenants, and the best returns. The Changing Face of Friendship According to a Microsoft survey of 10,000 people, of the 400 friendships we make over a lifetime, just over 30 are likely to be maintained and of those just six we will consider to be close friends. Fifty-eight per cent of respondents value friendship as life’s most important thing, over money, family and careers. Seven out of ten list losing friends as one of their biggest regrets. “Two generations ago we probably would not have made anywhere near 400 friends,” relationship psychologist Susan Quilliam tells the Daily Mail. “But we are a lot more mobile now, we don’t live in the same town or village all our lives and don’t have jobs for life so we come into contact with many more people and make lots of social friends. The number of close friends, who we can really count on when we need them, however, is probably unchanged.” Pew study Teens Social Media, and Privacy discovered that social media is changing younger generations’ attitude to friendship and intimacy, with most teenagers having hundreds of Facebook friends and little regard for privacy. Patricia Greenfield, a UCLA development psychologist and director of the Children’s Digital Media Centre @ Los Angeles, has conducted similar investigations. “We found in our study that people, college students, are not getting a sense of social support from being on the phone,” she tells CBC News. “They’re getting social support through bigger networks and having a sense that their audience is large.” Intimate friendships, adds Greenfield, are on the decline, with youngsters deriving support digitally — in the form of ‘likes’ and comments — as opposed to physically or vocally: “The whole idea behind intimacy is self-disclosure. Now they’re doing selfdisclosure to an audience of hundreds.” Over seventy per cent of adult internet users are signed up to Facebook, and, according to Pew, users of the site are likely to be more trusting, to have more close relationships, to be less isolated and to get more support from social ties than their non-Facebook-

using counterparts. Too many connections, however, can be counter-productive. A paper by Edinburgh University Business School found more Facebook friends equals more stress. The social media site has undoubtedly changed the concept of comradeship. “Facebook places every type of social connection into a single ‘friend’ basket,” writes Jacoba Urist in the Atlantic. “….as seventy per cent of Facebook users are on the site daily, sociologists and psychologists are examining the link between Facebook use and changes in relationship strength. Facebook may simply prolong superficial connections that would have naturally dissipated otherwise.” With that in mind, photographer Tanja Hollander has spent the last few years visiting her 600-plus Facebook contacts — some of whom she has never met before in person — to take their picture for an intriguing project called Are You Really My Friend? It has seen the US-based snapper traverse 43 states, five countries and over 140 towns and cities. Only five per cent of potential subjects refused a portrait, while nearly three-quarters offered her a meal and a bed for the night. Hollander was surprised by the mutual emotional connection with those she had never previously physically met. “Can you really know somebody if you’re never seen their home?” she ponders. “To me, when I started, a friend was someone whose house you knew, someone you had eaten dinner with, but now I’ve realised that might not be as important to the definition of friendship.” Her exhibition will take place at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING.

HAVE A GO THIS SUMMER. Summer, sand and surf are all images that come to mind as soon as spring starts to arrive. With the beach as our backyard, who can resist a new way to enjoy the outdoors with one of the fastest growing sports on the planet: Stand Up Paddling or SUP as it is commonly known. This new sport is actually quite an old sport which holds its roots with the original Hawaiian beach boys and kings of surfing. Move over lads, as SUP is not just for the boys! One does not have to be ‘hardcore’ to enjoy the world of SUP, as it can offer a great escape from the mundane. This might just be another way to chill-out and paddle our coast to explore sealife, attempt yoga poses at sunrise on a calm day or a social morning paddle with friends and family. If a workout is what you have in mind this is also a benefit, as the sport offers an exceptional core and total body fitness regime. Not only is SUP so diverse and enjoyable on so many levels, it is also its simplicity that makes it so attractive. There is minimal equipment required — board and paddle — and transport options for all types of boards to take the stress out of getting into the water. Fairweather paddlers fear not, as specialised clothing can also keep those of us prone to the cold, warmer and drier so we can enjoy the water longer. Still feeling a bit uneasy? Perhaps consider a lesson. A day with the a pro can build confidence but also, remember it is a known fact that women can find their balance more quickly than men. With improved balance, technique will come with practice. It is a sport most get the hang of very quickly and it is a truly fabulous way to get away from the hectic pace of our daily lives. FOR THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN EXPERIENCING WHAT SUP IS ALL ABOUT, SUPCENTRE NEWMARKET, WILL BE HOLDING ‘HAVE A GO’ SESSIONS DURING NOVEMBER, DECEMBER AND JANUARY. CHIC TEAK

Even timeless teak has its fashions, Patrick Driessen owner of Java Teak explains.

57 Home & Design

“Simple, classic style is always popular. The conventional bistro table, for instance, is a constant best-seller. Its plain design comes in many sizes and shapes — there’s something to suit everyone. Summer entertaining means umbrellas are always big sellers too. The practical market umbrella comes in a huge range of colours and sizes. Teak can be chic and with new containers coming in regularly before Christmas there is a range of up-to-the-minute items available for you or for a gift.” New items in-store include a range of benches to suit many outdoor requirements. One favourite is the ‘Box Bench’, not only does it look gorgeous, the lid opens to reveal a storage space for small items. For those looking for a classic bench to complement their outdoor living space, The ‘San Francisco’ bench is the perfect two to three seat option. Another great addition to any garden is the 80 – 100 year old antique benches — adding a piece of history. The popular ‘Luyten Bench’ is a bench designed by Lord Luyten in the 1920s, it has an art deco look but it sits well in almost any setting. Teak benches have a longevity and quality that means they sell to more than just the homeowner. Schools like Diocesan and St Kentigern have Java Teak benches and they’re a common choice as a memorial bench. The comfortable teak summer loungers turn up in hotels across the pacific. Steamers and sun loungers go to Rarotonga and Fiji, and folding chairs are always in demand with the resorts. JAVA TEAK has moved to Grey Lynn, located in a huge 700m2 showroom with plenty of parking. Come and check us out.

Introducing Cocohills Remuera’s new go-to destination for good taste, good design and pre-loved, high quality furniture. Opulent leather, luxurious linen and plush velvet sofas sit side by side exquisite armchairs, feather trimmed lamps and rustic benches on the stylish floors of Cocohills. Around every corner there are more gems to discover — it’s a little like a grown up’s treasure trove. Founded by Heather Walker who is also known as The GoToGirl, Cocohills sits on Remuera Road, just down from the village. Disillusioned with the corporate world, the mother of three (Max is 14 and the twins, Eva and Theo, are 10) Heather found herself looking for a change of career that encompassed her passion. “I asked myself ‘what do I love?’” she says. Having grown up with a property developer father and a mother who had an antique business, Heather had a love of good design. She’d previously done well selling for friends and family on Trademe. Many of Heathers friends were after good quality designer pieces, but didn’t know how to go about finding them, let alone have the time to do so, and asked her to hunt them down for them in her travels. Many of Heathers contacts also had quality furniture pieces to sell but didn’t want to use the usual channels available, so approached her to find a buyer for them. A gap in the market was evident so being the opportunist that she is, Heather set about developing it further. “I loved the chase of it, the sales side of things and making people happy.” Word of mouth spread; when one person told someone else, who told someone else, who told someone else, Heather quickly became known as The GoToGirl. Fairly soon she was gaining access to amazing showroom samples and end of line furniture pieces and more and more people were asking her to sell on behalf. In need of more space she signed up for the store and Cocohills was born. Cocohills reflects quality with a fun edge, without being over the top. “I sell on behalf of customers from all over Auckland and I add new pieces, end of lines and samples to the mix. I only stock good quality items in great condition, but I am a secondhand store, so my prices reflect that.” Right now Cocohills is overflowing with stock. There’s a stunning brown leather lounge suite from Cavit & Co, a brand new velvet Chesterfield, beautiful linen sofas, side tables straight from Paris, newly upholstered wingback chairs and a wonderful Andrew Martin Rochester sofa awaiting collection by its ecstatic new owner. Not everything bears a hefty price tag; a printed hessian ottoman makes a striking statement at $75 and affordable artworks, rugs and cushions are scattered around the room. The pieces sell very quickly, so people need to keep an eye out or add their name to Heathers growing ‘customer wishlist’. Indeed, Cocohills is rapidly evolving as a ‘go to’ destination for interior designers and homeowners alike, and has cemented Heather’s place as the GoToGirl for quality finds at great prices. “I feel right at home in my new career — this is what I love,” she says. Richard Hodder:

IN THE DRINK don’t treat it like a chore but rather an opportunity to interact.” Richard recently held his Four Corners of New Zealand exhibition: a stunning array of images showcasing some of the nation’s very best natural sights. “I hadn’t really seen many other projects like that before in New Zealand,” says the photographer. “Spending time in our outdoors isn’t new to me and I’ve always favoured it to overseas and we have such freedom to explore it. So, I took it upon myself to pack my car and not look back.” I ask the onetime business manager if he has now permanently swapped the office for the great outdoors. “I thought I had but it’s not quite that simple! There’s a lot of other things involved to get work, share work and make work other than just being in the outdoors all of the time. There’s still plenty of time to get stuck in front of a computer. But, in saying that, I plan on living in a truck this summer and will continue to live and work outdoors as much as possible. Like most things, it’s all about finding the right balance.” The wonders of modern day technology meant I was able to catch up with photographer Richard Hodder on the fly from Sri Lanka as he took a train from Ella to Colombo to catch his returning flight to New Zealand. The wonders of modern technology, however, are also making things more difficult for those wanting to forge a career from taking snaps. “I think it’s a pretty good topic for discussion,” says Richard. “I still find it hard to tell people I’m a photographer because a lot of people can take a great photo and, realistically, anyone is capable of capturing a unique and mesmerising moment. I’m confident that whatever happens, as long as I continue doing what I love and being passionate about my work then everything will be fine.” Richard himself is a relative newcomer to the trade and his photography career was born from the digital revolution. “I didn’t get into photography until 2010 when I went travelling,” Richard tells me. “I made a blog to share photos with my friends while I was away. I shot a lot in black and white, covering the lens with my hand to trick the camera into thinking it was darker so it would overexpose the images. I loved sharing them and got a real kick out of the genuine feedback. It definitely motivated me to continue shooting.” Since then Richard has developed a significant online following through inthedrink.biz, his personal site. “I’ve learnt that it’s important to get ahead in life before you try to get ahead in social media. You must be true to yourself. Having a catchy handle helps and

Incorporated into that balance must be Richard’s other great love, surfing. With surfing and photography being such individual endeavours, I presume he’s developed great patience, the type who enjoys being lost in his own thoughts. “Yeah, I guess you could say that,” he says. “Patience is probably a skill I’ve developed over the years without really thinking about it, though I do really enjoy working on projects with other people.” Great moments and fun memories, he adds, are always better shared. “Plus, I have a wild imagination and can go a bit nuts when left to myself! My ambition creeps in and I feel like anything is possible, then I explain my thoughts to others and I realise I might have gotten ahead of myself.” On a train journey through the Sri Lankan countryside, no doubt anything does, for now, feel possible. And why should it not? Yesterday, Richard may just have taken his favourite ever portrait. He describes Sri Lanka as his most incredible overseas experience: the colours, the contrast, the crazy controlled chaos that, “has kept me on my toes.” He draws great inspiration from those who live the life they want, rather than what is expected, he muses, and we sure could all learn from that. ALABAMA SHAKES SOUND & COLOUR

THE CHOPIN PROJECT OLAFUR ARNALDS & ALICE SARA OTT

DAVID GILMOUR RATTLE THAT LOCK

The second album from Alabama Shakes breaks some new ground for the band, moving well beyond the rawness of their first album Boys and Girls. In Sound and Color, Alabama Shakes tap into the many veins of texture that black American musicians have innovated over the years.

Classical music is often considered sacrosanct when it comes to how to record and interpret it in this century. People are loathe to do much beyond simply play it off the score, and record it as though you were at a concert.

Originally known as the guitarist and colead vocalist from Pink Floyd, this is David Gilmour’s fourth solo album. Rattle that Lock is certainly going to be a must-have for any Floyd fan. Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music co-produced this with Gilmore, and also features on the album, along with a vast array of talented musicians.

After a year in the studio writing and recording, the band delivers tunes that range from low key and soulful, like This Feeling, through to garage rockers like The Greatest. The sound of the album is a slice of 1960’s Mussel Shoals, with a down to earth honesty that lets the songs take centre stage. Front woman Brittany Howard is the main songwriter, and her performance on electric guitar and vocals gives the band the lashings of blues attitude and soul that makes this so authentically engaging.

Icelandic composer Olafur Arnalds has broken these taboos, working with virtuoso pianist Alice Sarah Ott, on this album The Chopin Project. As well as adding instrumentation to embellish the original pieces, Arnalds and Ott recorded using a variety of locations and pianos around Reykjavik. The ambience, room noises and piano treatments used, make this very much ‘Not-Your-Father’s-Chopin-Album’.

Borrowing a flavour from the likes of Otis Redding or Aretha Franklin, or in a soulful mood, perhaps Al Green, this is one of those albums that asks to be listened to over and over.

It is though, a very emotional and involving presentation. The addition of strings, new compositions inspired by Chopin, and the changes in acoustic setting through the album, give this the feeling of being a soundtrack. Arnalds has succeeded in bringing more to the score than a simple reproduction. Listen out for more of his work on the soundtrack to the BBC series Broadchurch.

With its ambient introductions, clean guitar solos and effortless piano pieces, Rattle that Lock has a distinct Pink Floyd feel going on, but it does manage to stretch further, and offers some new sounding tracks for Gilmour. The Girl In The Yellow Dress is a personal favourite, slowing the pace down with a jazzy style to contrast with the usual Gilmore feel. The album shows us that the years of experience Gilmour and his friends have is still being used, and from the first track to the last, the songwriting is superb and the production is clean and precise.

DESPOTS and ART

Oct 2015

Khaled al-Asaad was an author, historical and archaeological scholar who dedicated a great chunk of his life to the world heritage site of Palmyra, Syria. Famed for its ancient European and Persian infused architecture it was recently overrun by Islamic militant group ISIS. In August it was revealed that 82-year-old al-Asaad had been beheaded by the group for his refusal to lead them to a stockpile of valuable artefacts. ISIS have begun to destroy parts of the ancient city, having already wreaked havoc in Libya and Iraq, most notably in Mosul. “The mindless attack on great art, on history, and on human understanding constitutes a tragic assault not only on Mosul Museum, but on our universal commitment to use art to unite people and promote human understanding,” notes Thomas P. Campbell, director of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. While some valuables are being plundered for profit, a raft of relics are being obliterated for being un-Islamic. They’re not the first despotic regime to have destroyed cultural icons, and history proves the relationship between tyranny and artistry is often a contradictory one. When Pol Pot’s murderous Khmer Rouge marched victoriously into the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh in 1975, top of his target list were artists and intellectuals. Such was the scale of that genocidal reign — which possibly killed a quarter of the nation’s population — that all art was very nearly eradicated from Cambodia’s history, kept alive only by oral tradition. Half a century prior in totalitarian Russia, thousands more intellectuals and artists were rounded up, including poet Osip Mandelstam, who was arrested for reciting an anti-Stalin poem to his friends. He later died, like so many of his contemporaries, in a prison camp. In 213BC, the first emperor of China’s first imperial dynasty, Qin Shi Huang, ordered the live burial of hundreds of Confucian scholars along with the burning of their books and when Europeans arrived in the Americas they too set alight to an array of Mayan and Aztec works. But, perhaps the most infamous book burners of them all were the Nazis, whose

campaign of literary destruction began on the evening of 10 May 1933 when university students hurled 20,000 ‘unGerman’ volumes by writers such as Ernest Hemingway, H.G. Wells and Marcel Proust onto a giant public bonfire. Four years later, the Nazis put on two art exhibitions, one of which, simply entitled The Degenerate Art Exhibition, showcased modernist works by the likes of Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka and Paul Klee. The accompanying handbook explained that the purpose of the show was to, “reveal the philosophical, political, racial and moral goals and intentions behind this movement, and the driving forces of corruption which followed them.” Not all art was considered an affront to their twisted ideology, however. Another show, The Great German Art Exhibition, comprised of Hitler-approved pieces, mainly conservative and classical affairs of landscapes, soldiers and the odd nude blonde. The Fuhrer himself was once a budding artist, twice failing to get into the Vienna Academy and between 1933 and the close of the Second World War his party looted a significant number of collections across Europe, many of which still remain unaccounted for. A spree known as the Nazi Plunder. Notorious Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar often used works of art by the likes of Dali and Picasso as money laundering tools during his transactions. One artist, Fernando Botero has since sought revenge for the use of his works as drug currency by making a profit from the criminal’s demise with his painting The Death of Pablo Escobar. Saddam Hussein was widely mocked for his questionable taste in art, his collections having been discovered following his overthrow in 2003, but, a decade later, one Iraqi sculptor spoke of a golden age for creative types under Hussein’s tyrannical rule. “Working as an artist in Iraq, when Saddam Hussein was president, was a golden period for all artists, not just myself,” Natiq al Alousi, who was commissioned by his former president, tells CNN. “He was supportive of artists and was open to them. But we weren’t open to the world for security reasons, and that’s it.” Fellow fallen late dictator Muammar Gaddafi is also known to have been an avid art collector, and his son, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was even an exhibited painter, though his works were universally derided. Just in case critics killing his creative attempts weren’t enough, in July a Libyan court sentenced him in absentia to death by firing squad for crimes against humanity.

New Zealand Painter — Michael Rowland

I’M JUST A PAINTER In 2004, Michael Rowland and his wife, Jan, abandoned Mt Eden where their lives had been centred for many years, and moved to Oratia on Auckland’s West Coast. For Michael the move constituted a shift to full-time painting, while Jan, who worked as a primary school teacher, supported him, and continues to provide the emotional sustenance supplied by a muse. Rowland hasn’t looked back, though he notes ruefully that as a painter, an earlier era might have been more financially rewarding.

Time Out by Michael Rowland — (acrylic on canvas) 915mm x 910mm

By documenting the buildings of a bygone age I offer homage to an era which was vastly superior in terms of humanity. Today when you look at office blocks they’re brutal, dehumanising.” - Michael Rowland -

“I knew Peter Siddell who sold five paintings on the opening night of his first exhibition, and the rest the following day, but that was in the days when there were only a handful of good artists and very few galleries.” Now working from a home studio in Helensville since moving there in 2012, Rowland says, “When the family was growing up, I couldn’t paint for years and became very frustrated, so when it was possible to paint full-time, it just burst out of me. I wish I’d had the guts to do it earlier but responsibilities take precedence. Today I aim to paint until I drop.” He staged his first solo exhibition while working as a trainee restorer with the Auckland Art Gallery in 1975. “I’d become disillusioned with restoration which was technical rather than creative work. At the time I was with the Hare Krishnas so the exhibition focussed on Krishna subject matter. Three sold and the Mayor, Sir Dove-Myer Robinson, even wandered through for a look. Themes prove an awkward topic and no particular one stands out, although it’s clear that the documenting of Auckland’s older buildings is a favoured topic, along with Auckland landscapes painted from less known vantage points. “I try to express beauty which isn’t always obvious at a cursory glance. I also like to respond to what goes on in society without being political — to express how people live their lives and how they respond to living in post-industrial society.” “By documenting the buildings of a bygone age I offer homage to an era which was vastly superior in terms of humanity. Today when you look at office blocks they’re brutal, dehumanising. They’re square, ugly and monstrous, the same as motorways, because they’re not in proper scale to people. They’re machinelike, and that’s what I hate — it’s become a machine society, brutal and non-human.” Emanating from all of Rowland’s work, whether it’s strictly documentary, or the fey surrealism he has begun to move towards, is a quiet vitality. Some of the documentary works convey this quality in part through the omission of obvious components, such as a conspicuous lack of traffic at the busy heart of Mt Eden. The omission makes obvious to the viewer the otherwise unnoticed features of surrounding architecture. In works such as the pronouncedly surrealistic Time Out, a figure stands high on a building ledge while the west coast sea laps at the kerb. “It’s about global warming,” says Rowland. Paintings of wild fields of vibrant blooms, or of land and seascapes, describe other also oft-visited themes. “The design in nature is incredible,” he says, “expresses the power of God.” Rowland immigrated to New Zealand with his family at 17. With a Diploma in Graphic Art from A.I.T. he’d landed a job at Robinson Printers as a graphic designer but he didn’t know anyone. Enrolling at Elam changed his life. He made friends, and

found himself amongst people who had an interest in art. Like many youngsters of the era, he also found drugs and it was a while before he was able to make sense of his life, although he managed to graduate with a Dip.FA in 1973. Sense came, and the cleaning up of his act, with the Hare Krishnas whom he joined for five years. The experience took him into the deeper aspects of life and spirituality, and today is integral to his philosophical views around art and living well. Born in 1949 in Hertfordshire, Rowland discovered painting as an 11 year old. Everything about it thrilled him, from the immediately natural feel of a paintbrush in his hand, to the smell of paint. Thereafter all else seemed shallow by comparison. “On Friday afternoons we got four hours of art,” he says. “Our teacher, Dick Farrar, was inspirational. He’d play Bob Dylan in class, and sometimes we’d make a trip down to the docks in London to paint tugboats. I’d go into an art shop and disappear into the magnificent smells of linseed oil, and blank paper — spend hours looking at art materials.” Although he prefers to work in oils which are more plastic and allow finer blending, he was obliged to extend his mastery to the use of acrylics after developing toxicity from exposure to oils and turps, in combination with the lead paints and solvents he worked with while renovating houses. “I’ve adapted my technique and have found ways to make acrylics work for me,” he says, “and these days I work with both.” Working from photographs for accuracy, he nevertheless allows the muse to have her say. “Because much of my subject matter tends to be realistic, especially the buildings, I have to work with three-dimensional realism which means there are rules to obey around perspective. I accommodate the drafting aspect by drawing directly on the canvas in pencil, then blocking in areas of base colour.” Working on up to six pieces at a time, Rowland moves from one to the other to keep himself stimulated. “The first few hours into a new painting are totally exciting, watching the process unfold in my inner eye. It’s the opportunity to refine my technique, become more sophisticated.’ “Art is the most privileged thing to do,” he says. “It embodies the essence of freedom, narrowed only by the imagination. You’re self-employed, free to create, free to experience freedom. Michael Rowland lives and paints in Helensville. Words and images: Theresa Sjoquist

LEMONBONE Top contemporary art leasing firm Lemonbone began almost by accident, though a happy accident at that. “Well, depending on which way you looked at it, either our house was too small, or our art collection was becoming too big!” says co-founder Lynn Whitfield. “We started storing a couple of large works in specialised storage places and one day our accountant happened to mention the storage cost and suggested leasing it out instead. He said that he’d lease one for his boardroom, became one of our first clients and so that’s literally how it all started. We then began buying art with a view to leasing it out and the collection grew and grew.” Lynn and her husband, Simon Vodanovich — who is also a trustee of Auckland Art Gallery Foundation — have been avid art collectors for over two decades. “We’re both really interested in contemporary art,” Lynn says. “Our collection is mainly from New Zealand, but our interest isn’t limited to that.” IS THERE ANYTHING YOU BELIEVE MAKES NEW ZEALAND ART STAND OUT? “I do think our art is really great. There are obvious Maori and Polynesian influences that can be recognised in some New Zealand artists’ work which appeals to many Kiwis. People perceive New Zealand art to be quite dark, though that’s a sweeping generalisation.” ARE YOU AN ARTIST? “No, definitely not!” Lynn has recently embarked upon a contemporary art course to, “broaden my knowledge of New Zealand and international contemporary art.” The couple travel to art exhibitions home and abroad, her favourite trip ever was to the Venice Biennale: “It has been referred to as the Olympics of the art world. The year we attended we wanted to show our support for an artist New Zealand sent there whose work we really admire.” They now own around 250 works. Their clients are mainly businesses, however they have a growing number of private clients who lease art for their homes. “People lease from us because our collection is very contemporary, very appealing to those who like cutting edge works. Some of our works are challenging though, so it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.”

It’s hard to explain why art is great. It’s a personal thing, a feeling.

ARE THERE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT CONTEMPORARY ART OUT THERE? “I hear comments all of the time about abstract art, like, ‘my four-year-old could do that’. It’s hard to explain why you think art is great. It’s a personal thing, a feeling. A lot of people can be very intimidated by art, too scared to go into galleries, which is a real shame because it can be so enriching. The way people run galleries today is a lot less formal and I think more people feel that it is not such a domain for the elite now, which helps.” YOUR ALL-TIME FAVOURITE WORK? “If the house was burning down, after saving my family, I would definitely run back for the piece by Milan Mrkusich.”

GUIDE TO PLANTS

ON GARDEN STYLE

MAKING A GARDEN SUCCESSFUL GARDENING BY NATURE’S RULES

THE FOODIES DIARY 2016 ALLAN CAMPION

Most gardeners will be familiar with Paul Bangay’s style of gardening and indeed his philosophy of the right plant in the right place. Following on from his last inspiring book about establishing his own amazing garden at Stonefield, he has created a collection of not only his favourite plants but he explains about choosing well; meaning the plants that will suit your garden environment. We all covet beautiful gardens but so often we make it more difficult than it need be. With Paul’s advice and this big beautiful book you will be sure to find trees, shrubs and flowers for the most demanding of situations.

Carol Klein presents a very popular gardening programme based on her garden in England shown here regularly on SKY television. You will perhaps have seen her at the Chelsea Flower Show too. Her garden is high and coastal, so challenging is the word to describe it. However, over decades she has created acres of amazing natural garden, seamless with the native habitat. She explains the plants for meadows, woodland, hedgerows and exposed areas. Fully illustrated and comprehensive, the winning thing about this book is the way Carol’s passion for gardening shines through on every page. If ever there was a book to inspire you to get out and do more with your plot of land, this is it.

The Foodies Diary needs to be snapped up NOW. By the time you want one for yourself they will have disappeared into the homes of those who know just how valuable this little book is. Apart from being a pretty working diary, it lists all the fruit and vegetables in season month by month, plus there is a recipe per day with additional information on wines and their food matches. It is Australian, so the farmers market information is not for us but all the other information is applicable to New Zealand. A great gift for foodie friends, but one that you will want for yourself.

72 hours in NEW YORK DENNIS and ROSAMUND KNILL travel to New York with a list of things to see that’s as big as the city itself

It’s simply about being there. Art galleries, architecture and some of the world’s best shopping is what makes New York great. But what makes it even greater are the acres of neon signs, the bustling subways, the hordes of frenetic people footslogging the sidewalks while the relentless taxi horns have your heart heaving as they manoeuvre through the relentless traffic jams. This is the real deal. Welcome to New York. After 24-long-hours since we left New Zealand we eventually land at LaGuadia Airport. With over twenty-million commuters passing through here annually we were more than a little relieved to be finally outside the terminal building. And with the sight of the famous yellow cab in full view it was only then that we knew that we had arrived in the greatest city in the world. You don’t come to New York to relax, so be prepared to be overwhelmed. This is a city that screams with exuberance, glamour and style at such pace that the city never sleeps. For first-timers apart from eating out and serious shopping there is lots to see and do. No matter how much or how little time you have, just follow the crowds. Times Square once home to New York Times is the epicentre of New York’s theatre district and multi-story television screens. This is where all the action is 24/7 and a good place to start exploring all the city’s treasures.

And if you haven’t been to the Empire State Building then you haven’t been to New York. On a clear day the vista from the observatory on the 86th floor is stunning. From there you can see all of New York’s boroughs as well as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts, not forgetting Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and the teeming millions below. Then there’s the viewing deck on the 70th floor of the Rockefeller Centre in the heart of Midtown. The queues are noticeably shorter than the Empire State Building. After a hearty meal, for fitness freaks try burning off those carbs with a walk through Central Park. The best views of the city are from the northern end of the Sheep Meadow. From there it’s a short walk along to Strawberry Fields, complete with a garden full of plants from all corners of the world in loving memory of John Lennon, whos’ life was so tragically taken just across the road. Alternatively, settle for hiring a bike or a lazy 30-minute horse and carriage ride around the southern fringe. In this unashamedly capitalist city it was to our surprise that this 2083 acre rambling oasis is free for everyone. The Staten Island Ferry is the best way to see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Manhattan. The return trip takes about 90 minutes.

To cover all the cities museums and art galleries you will need an extended stay. New York boasts myriad museums and art galleries. The spiral Frank Lloyd Wrightdesigned Guggenheim, the American Museum of Natural History and the Whitney Museum of American Art are three not to be missed.

Visiting New York is sure to bring out the urge to splurge and if shopping is your game a good place to start is SoHo: the perfect playing field. From major retail stores to glitzy boutiques, SoHo has it all. Then there’s Macy’s the largest department store in the world and Bloomingdale’s who each offer discount cards for international visitors .

Situated at Ground Zero is New York’s most popular attraction, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Here you will find the air heavy and the mood sombre. We spent the entire day there mostly in silence as we reflected on that horrible and fateful September’s day that changed the world forever.

5th Avenue is New York’s most famous shopping district, where the sidewalks are lined with “high end” designer labels. All the big names are here including Prada, Gucci, Saks and Tiffany’s. And if you have given your friendly bank manager a bit of a scare then pray for forgiveness at one of the many churches close by.

Regardless of whether you want to shop or just sightsee, the best way to get around is a 3-day GrayLine hop-on-hop-off bus pass. For a mere $49pp you can explore the entire city at your leisure. Included are uptown, the loop and night tours, as well as across to Brooklyn. The loop ticket also gives you entry to the Empire State Observatory, a ferry trip to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Museum.

Like all great cities, New York offers excellent restaurants. For the serious ethnic foodie, Little Italy and nearby Chinatown are both worth a visit. At the end of an evening meal, for New Yorkers the night is just beginning. So if you want to join in with a bit more glitz, venture into the bar or nightclub scene, better still take in a show on Broadway.

The Seasons of

JAPAN The notoriously changeable Auckland weather will never rival the vast changes the seasons bring to Japan. The allure of the cherry blossoms of spring and the stunning colours of autumn foliage present a completely different Japan to each traveller.

Make sure to visit the Sagano Bamboo Grove where you can stand among thick green bamboo stalks that seem to go on forever.

Springtime cherry blossoms carry huge cultural significance for the Japanese. It is a time for festivals, celebration and communal drinking of sake under the trees by a people usually known for their reserve. Masses of pink and white tissue paper-like flowers provide beautiful backdrops to ancient temples and exquisite gardens. A great time to travel, it may be a littler cooler than summer, but the more southern parts of the country are still very pleasant.

A highlight of a recent trip was visiting many different gardens — some in the grounds of temples, others surrounding historical palaces. Quite how Japan with its 138 million people can have so many areas of such tranquil serenity made me think deeply about how different cultures embrace the balance of modern day living. I particularly enjoyed that these gardens are used by young and old in harmony — Japan is most definitely a culture with deep respect for nature.

Tokyo offers a striking bend of traditional culture with ubermodern architecture and technology. Truly a 24-hour city, you can still take time to immerse yourself in some culture — I highly recommend a visit to Tsukiji to see the world’s largest fish market. Here you can try your hand at making sushi and nigiri from a sushi master. You’ll find it a taste sensation compared to the standard offering here!

While in Japan, sampling the local cuisine is an absolute highlight, and this also changes with the seasons. Dive in and sample all the regional variations, all washed down with an excellent Japanese beer or sake.

Too much Tokyo is easily remedied by a trip out to the countryside, where ancient towns such as Takayama and Shirakawago, with their centuries old farm houses, will show you an entirely different side to this fascinating country. Located in a mountainous region that was cut off from the rest of the world for a long period of time, these villages with their Gassho-style thatched houses subsisted on the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms.

The memorial monuments of Hiroshima offer a poignant contrast to what is now a vibrant, modern city, and a journey aboard a bullet train is an absolute must.

World Journeys have created two distinctly different small group escorted journeys, each timed to one of our favourite seasons. Whichever season captures your heart, you will inevitably discover a unique and incredibly scenic country with an enchanting culture and gracious people.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Say ‘safari’ and many will immediately think of the Serengeti, but there are plenty more destinations from which to witness our world’s wonderful wildlife. Verve brings you some interesting alternatives. GORILLA’S IN THE MIST Three African countries offer the chance to the see endangered gorillas in their natural habitat — Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo — and thanks to various conservation and tracking projects, sighting of the great apes is pretty much guaranteed. Trekking permits must be obtained in all three nations and visitors must have decent levels of fitness due to long days of walking and the steep and muddy terrain. Gorilla fast facts: Adult males eat up to 30kg of food daily and though they’re mainly vegetarian, are partial to the odd small insect. There are less than a thousand mountain gorillas left on earth.

KING OF INDIA’S JUNGLE Slightly smaller and a little less groomed than their African counterparts, the Asiatic lion sure is still one majestic beast. The only place to spot them, other than zoos, is India’s Sasan Gir National Park. While there, check out the rest of India’s wealth of wildlife, which easily rivals many African nations, such as leopards, elephants and tigers. Asiatic Lion fast facts: This now-endangered population once spread from India to the Middle East and now numbers only around 300. There are a further 200 Asiatic lions in zoos. MONKEYING AROUND IN MALAYSIA Orangutans, originally native to Malaysia and Indonesia, only now inhabit the latter’s rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, where they remain endangered. Sanctuaries

can be found on both islands, alternatively a couple of days trekking through national parks such as Gunung Leuser will enable you to see them — and maybe even the odd rhino, elephant or tiger — in the wild. Orangutan fast facts: In Malay, Orangutan literally translates as ‘person of the forest’. They are the second smartest of all the great apes (after us), and their legendary lengthy arms stretch longer than their bodies.

tours, or alternatively just hang around and you’ll see one soon enough. I spent a number of months living near a beach in beautiful Queensland which was regularly closed due to stray crocs chillin’ in the ocean. Yes, the ocean. I stuck to swimming in pools. Fast croc facts: A ‘saltie’ can reach 7m and weigh in excess of 1000kg. They can survive in fresh or salt water (as in the ocean. Yes, the ocean) and have done so for about 100 million years. There’s probably no tougher animal on Earth. Or in the ocean.

BRAZIL’S BIG CAT The third largest feline after its striped and maned cousins, the Jaguar is the Americas’ top cat. Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland area, is also home to an array of wildlife such as parrots, giant rodents and the Brazilian tapir — plenty of prey to keep the Jaguar population healthy. You’re guaranteed to see a good few of these prowlers. Jaguar fast facts: Some Native American cultures considered the Jaguar God of the Night to be the lord of the underworld, and the name is derived from ‘yaguar’, meaning ‘he who kills with one leap’. They are also superb swimmers. MADAGASCAR’S LEMURS, AND MORE Eighty percent of Madagascar’s plant and animal life can be found nowhere else in the world and between 1999 and 2010, scientists discovered an astonishing 600-plus new species on the island. It’s most iconic resident is undoubtedly the lemur — of which there are multiple types — ably supported by the likes of bedazzling chameleons and beguiling rare birds. Lemur fast facts: The nocturnal creature takes its name from Latin, which means ‘spirits of the night’. The most famous species, the ring-tailed lemur, lives in groups of up to 30 animals which are bossed by a dominant female. CAGE DIVING WITH MEXICO’S MEGA FISH Two-hundred-and-forty kilometres west of Mexico the volcanic island of Guadalupe rises from tropical turquoise waters which see seasonal visits from the ocean’s most feared predator. Just last June, what is thought to be the largest ever great white shark, measuring around five metres, was filmed and tagged there. They named her Deep Blue. Great white shark fast facts: The creature’s resemblance to a missile doesn’t end with its shape, it’s capable of reaching speeds of 40km/h, fast enough, in fact, to propel it from the water. They are the world’ largest predatory fish. CROC SPOTTING IN OZ Such is the booming population of the currentlyprotected saltwater crocodile of Australia’s north that the reintroduction of trophy hunting is being considered. There are a raft of companies offering croc watching

BEARING THE CANADIAN POLAR CHILL The town of Churchill on the western shore of Canada’s Hudson Bay is considered the Polar Bear capital of the world. Two-thirds of all polar bears call Canada home, though, sadly, due to global warming extinction of these creatures within a generation is a real possibility. Various eco-tours ae hoping to stop that. Polar Bear fast facts: Don’t be fooled by their cuddly appearance, these beasts are capable of ferocity to more than match their beauty. It is the largest land-dwelling carnivore but they spend much of their time in the sea. Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Jordan Rondel Bringing the best of baking into peoples homes There are many reasons Jordan Rondel became The Caker. The most simple, underlying and undeniable reason is this: she see cakes as an edible expression of love. They can sometimes say what words can’t. They bring people together. They are a symbol of celebration in life (well, alongside champagne, perhaps). She is The Caker because there is more to cake than meets the eye. Baking is in Jordan’s blood. Her great-grandfather was a pastry chef who ran a beautiful little patisserie in Paris. He was an artisan who, even during wartime, insisted on finding a way to serve his customers something exceptional. He passed his secrets on to Jordan’s grandparents, and they to her. As a young girl she would visit her grandparents in Paris and on special mornings, they would walk together to the local markets. She saw the watchful care with which ingredients were selected. Every element, it seemed, was essential and precious. Much of their baking involved fresh fruits and healthy options alongside touches of luxury. Jordan retains this French ideal when it comes to eating: indulge in taste, not in bulk. Jordan started her own business in 2010, and since then The Caker story has been a mixture of surreal successes and the inevitable stresses of starting and sustaining a small business. Jordan has travelled far and wide to make sure that her customers are not missing out on baking developments around the world. In 2014, she travelled to London, Paris, Barcelona, New York and Los Angeles, sharing inspiration with the foremost establishments and bakers in these cities.

Whittaker’s ‘unbeatable’ as New Zealand’s most loved brand

Food The All Blacks may have a shot of becoming the first team ever to win consecutive Rugby World Cups, but they can’t top a seemingly unbeatable Whittaker’s as New Zealand’s most loved brand.

Oct 2015

Colmar Brunton this week released the results of its annual ‘Brands I Love’ survey and while the All Blacks have jumped 7% to be the country’s second most loved brand for 2015, Whittaker’s comfortably holds on to the top spot for the fourth year in a row. Tip Top, Air New Zealand and Pineapple Lumps round out the top five most loved brands.

The top 20 Most Loved Brands in New Zealand for 2015 are as follows.

Colmar Brunton CEO Jacqueline Farman says that around the world, brands that are well loved grow faster for longer, and New Zealand is no exception. “Kiwis were clear in the survey about what qualities make brands loveable, and Whittaker’s consistently ticks all the boxes. New Zealanders want to support brands that reflect who we are, and what we value. Being Kiwi owned and operated, great value for money, trustworthy and likeable are key.” “Whittaker’s delivers on all those qualities, adding further value by constantly innovating in partnership with other iconic Kiwi brands like Tip Top and L&P. Their combination of brand love and innovation is a sure-fire recipe for exceptional brand strength and growth. Whittaker’s has been a clear winner for the last four years by some distance, and is looking pretty much unbeatable at the moment. But if the All Blacks do win the World Cup, who knows?” Whittaker’s topped the survey for both males and females and in the 18-29 and 50+ age categories, however it was pipped by the All Blacks in the 30-49 age group. Ms Farman says three of the biggest movers in the survey are all retailers, reflecting a return to value-led strategy in this sector. Mitre 10, New World and The Warehouse also featured in the top 10 companies for fair value in this year’s Colmar Brunton New Zealand Corporate Reputation Index. “Expectations of fair value from Kiwi companies are especially tough, but it’s not just about the price, it’s about the whole package: range, location, convenience, a great shopping experience and a clear purpose that makes you different. Here are three retail brands doing that well, and building strong reputations as a result. And reputation matters a lot — not only do people feel and speak more positively about brands and businesses with strong reputations, when it comes to the purchase decision, they will pay a premium for them.” She says buying New Zealand made is important for Kiwis, especially when buying food products, according to the survey. “Fresh fruit and veges and dairy products are where it matters most to buy New Zealand made, but we also make it a priority in other food categories such as frozen or tinned fruit and veges, and confectionery.” The top three reasons for choosing New Zealand made products are supporting the New Zealand economy (87%), supporting local producers (82%) and helping to keep more Kiwis in work (78%). Colmar Brunton has developed a ‘NZ’s Most Loved Brands Top 20’ love mark which will be offered to the all those brands that made the top 20 in the survey.

A NATURAL SOLUTION FOR ANXIOUS DOGS THIS BONFIRE NIGHT

SHAVING HONEY BEES Bees are hugely important to our survival. Thanks to their work many important crops are pollinated. And without their work we’d struggle to get apples, beans, blueberries, onions, pears, plums, and peaches, just to name a few.

Oct 2015

But sadly they’re under threat. In New Zealand varroa mites have decimated wild hives, while internationally the phenomena of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), which results in all the mature workers disappearing from seemingly healthy hives, could potentially be catastrophic.

- FROM THE DOG COAT COMPANY Bonfire night is not too far away, and can be extremely stressful for some dogs. In fact, dog anxiety is a modern day reality. Symptoms can range from changes in behaviour, such as repetitive licking, hiding, diarrhea, aggression, puddles on the floor, skin reactions, to name but a few, and none of which are desirable for the dog or the owner. When the dog is in this stressed state, the sympathetic nervous system and adrenal glands are under great pressure and the body is continuously in the ‘fight and flight’ mode. This state means the dog is unable to relax; they are always on high alert, feeling like they are in danger. They lose perspective, and can feel depressed. When we take our animals to the vet, there is very little on offer to help the situation in a natural way. Most cases just need support, to reprogramme the nervous system. The Calm Coat works through the well researched principles of compression: giving a reassuring hug around the body and chest region. The coat must fit firmly to have an effect. This unique patented design is professionally made from merino wool, a perfect fibre with wonderful thermoregulatory properties, enabling it to be able to be worn safely and comfortably for extended periods of time. The Pantone colour specifically chosen for the Canine Calm Coat is TREETOP — Treetop is a healthy, harmonious green from nature, which offers a reassuring presence. The Dog Coat Company is an international online business based in Christchurch New Zealand; visit their website for more information on the Canine Calm Coat, which is also now available in vetinary clinics nationwide.

Thankfully some Australian scientists have been shaving bees. Though shaving them is only necessary when they’re young and hairy. Older ones don’t need it. All of which lays the groundwork so that they can stick microchips onto them that will help the scientist track where the bees are going. As currently one of the problems has been figuring out what is wrong with the missing bees. But while we don’t know exactly what is going on with the bees, it’s likely to be a combination of several factors, including habitat loss and pesticide use.

HOW CAN WE HELP? BE CAREFUL WHEN USING PESTICIDES.

Reduce your reliance on pesticides. Healthy, well-fed, well-watered plants are less likely to be munched on or attacked by insects. Companion planting can help protect plants so you don’t need to use pesticides. Organic pesticides are often sufficient, and these are generally less harmful to bees as long as you avoid directly spraying them. Use pesticides in the evening, when bees aren’t active, and avoid when possible spraying flowers.

GROWING FLOWERS

There are fewer flowers around on farms than there used to be. Planting a wide range of flowers that flower at different times can help bees by ensuring they have an abundant and reliable food sources. Growing these flowers will also help your garden, as good pollination improves fruit set, which can help improve the size of your harvest.

WHAT TO GROW?

Below is a selection of some of my favourite plants that are great for bees. FLOWERS Alyssum, anise hyssop, bergamot, borage, echinacea, lithodora and lavender. TREES AND SHRUBS Blueberries, blackberries, crab apples, hebes, pieris (lily of the valley shrub), raspberries and escallonia.

HR-V Review In 1997, the Honda HR-V was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, creating a new market for the sub-compact SUV. 18 years later, the HR-V is back. The new incarnation is sleek and sophisticated, with sharp, dynamic lines that look modern and elegant. It’s an SUV but with none of the bulk, magically keeping interior space and practicality while looking like a streamlined coupe. The HR-V Sport certainly passes the style test. The prominent black grille and chrome trim look strong, and the alloy wheels complement the striking lines of the vehicle. The LED headlights and daytime running lights complete the elegant exterior beautifully. The interior is just as impressive. The space is the first thing that strikes you on entering. The large glass areas make the car seem open and airy, and the sleek dash is highlighted by piano black accents. The placement of the electric parking brake feels modern and increases the feeling of space in the cabin, and the keyless push-button start is a great feature. The leather trim on the seats and the door linings add to a feeling of luxury, while the soft-touch highlydesigned dash adds to a sporty feel. The technology in the vehicle is just as astounding. Even the base-spec is kitted out with a 7” touch

screen, so you can sync your iPhone with the unit to use pre-saved maps with seamless audio integration. The HR-V Sport also comes with a handy LaneWatch camera which shows your blindspot when changing lanes, giving you an extra set of eyes, and taking any stress out of the drive. The magic seats in the HR-V offer ‘Long-Mode’ which accommodates items up to 2.44m long, which is perfect for surf boards, ladders or large musical instruments, and ‘Tall-Mode’ folds the rear seat up and back, leaving the floor to ceiling space free. The variable-height cup holders are a work of practical genius, ensuring your flat white or tall milkshake are in no danger of toppling over. Overall, the HR-V feels like the perfect blend of design and practicality. Honda New Zealand expects the HR-V to emulate the success of the Jazz — which was released to rave reviews last year — and if the media hype is anything to go by, that looks set to happen. Top Gear says, “Sixteen years after the original practically invented the crossover genre, it (the HR-V) has returned to reap the benefits of the market’s huge popularity,” and we agree. Without a doubt, the HR-V is the best offering in the sub-compact SUV class, and is the perfect vehicle for the modern New Zealand urbanite.

Go Black The award-winning Jazz now offers you a unique Black Edition. So now, along with Reverse Camera, Touchscreen, Bluetooth, Navigation, Magic Seats, a 5 Year Warranty and Alloy Wheels, you also get the chance to show your true colours. Go Black!
