I am not a rider of bikes. I will run, walk, do weights, yoga, tennis but I don’t ride bikes. Maybe I just need to better my balance! I am a city dweller though, and the trafﬁc volume has become ridiculously congested these days. Recently the council took away the much beloved street parking outside my apartment and replaced it with a bike lane. I wondered if this was a sign that it was time to give cycling another go so I decided to give a stylish e-bike a try. The next day I took the bike on an hour-andﬁfteen-minute ride, straight out of the city to the nearest suburb of Mission Bay. And I was off! I rode down the bike lane and stopped at the lights. So far so good, stopping has always been easy. Trying to take off however has always involved an awkward push off the curb with a not-so-much pedal that is just enough to discover I’m in a way too high gear creating a wobble that made me look like a mix of Mr. Bean and Miranda Hart. This time as I put my foot on the pedal, it was like I had a friend behind me giving me a good push. Even in top gear, a little whirr helped me along and I took off like a pro. This remained my favourite feature of the bike my entire ride. I navigated my way through the city noticing that the bike lanes would come and go, oftentimes leaving me sharing the way with pedestrians or cars. As it became necessary for me to slow right down to pedestrian speed, the pedal assist made it much easier to ride

slowly without wobbling. I felt quite graceful as I expertly weaved my way through to the next bike lane. Once on a good stretch of lane, I changed up and up, each time feeling the familiar whirr help me along. As I got into top gear I felt my lungs take in a bit more oxygen and began to wonder if I should have taken that yoga class right before I got on the bike—the pedal assist wasn’t taking away all the work for me. I felt like I was exercising, but I felt about 50% fitter than I really was. Once I got to Mission Bay, I stopped in for a cup of coffee, feeling a little flushed and energised, but not sweaty. Perfect. In fact, possibly most women’s idea of how exercise should be. As I returned home, I realised I’d been riding for 40 minutes and started to wish my bike had cruise control. I was very grateful for the pedal assist as I went directly into an icy gust of head on wind, the bike’s whirr pushing me effortlessly along against the breeze. The pedal assist was amazing for going slow and increasing speed with ease (especially from take off). Having pedaled further than expected, I'd have loved some cruise control to return home. Upon getting home after my bike ride, I felt like I had done some exercise for the day, enough for me to enjoy a good lunch and some chocolate afterwards, but I did not need a shower. Very cool for city living to pop to my nearest (or furthest) café and arrive still looking fresh, but not deal with traffic jams and parking. — Words: Denise Ferguson BOSCH-EBIKE.NZ

EYE ALLERGIES With spring right around the corner, many people will be looking forward to the warmer temperatures, colourful blooms and baby wildlife. Now is a good opportunity to educate ourselves on a condition that is very common at this time of year—eye allergy. The clinical team at Mortimer Hirst are here to help you get on top of your eye allergies this season. WHAT IS EYE ALLERGY?

Eye allergy is also known as allergic conjunctivitis. It occurs when a person’s immune system over-reacts to a substance (allergen) in the environment. When the allergen enters our body, a chain reaction of events takes place. Special cells, called mast cells, release a chemical called histamine. This leads to inﬂammation of the conjunctiva, the thin tissue that covers the white part of the eyeball and the inside of the eyelids. Seasonal allergens such as pollen and mould spores are a common cause of allergic conjunctivitis. Dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens can cause allergic reactions year-round.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

In addition to the common allergy symptoms of sneezing, congestion, and a runny nose, a person with allergic conjunctivitis may experience any number of the following: • Redness of both eyes • Itching of both eyes and the surrounding tissues • Excess tearing or a watery discharge • Puffy or swollen eyelids Allergic conjunctivitis will usually affect both eyes at the same time because it is a response to an allergen in the environment. It is not contagious so cannot be spread from one person to another. Normally the eyes will produce a clear, watery discharge as part of the allergic response. If there is a pus-like discharge that makes the eyelids sticky, it is more likely to be a bacterial infection, which is very contagious. If you experience atypical symptoms, for example blurry vision or redness affecting one eye only, it is important to seek advice from an eye care professional, such as an optometrist at Mortimer Hirst.

HOW CAN THIS BE TREATED? AVOID THE ALLERGEN The best way to control allergy is to minimise your exposure to the allergens you are sensitive to. A consultation with a doctor who specialises in allergies may be useful to identify what substances you are allergic to. If plant pollen is a trigger for you, a good pair of wraparound sunglasses can help to shield your eyes from pollen exposure when outdoors.

DON’T RUB YOUR EYES! When the eyes are itchy your first instinct is to rub them. You must resist the urge to do this because rubbing stimulates the mast cells to release more histamine, making your symptoms worse. REMOVE CONTACT LENSES You may find your contact lenses become uncomfortable during a flare up of allergies. Switching to glasses and giving your eyes a rest from contact lenses can help relieve symptoms. Even with regular cleaning, contact lenses can get deposits and a build up of allergens on the lens surface. Your Mortimer Hirst optometrist can assess if your eyes would be suitable for daily disposable contact lenses that are discarded after a single use. This decreases the likelihood of an allergic reaction. COLD COMPRESSES Applying an icepack for short periods will help soothe the eyes and reduce swelling. Lubricating eye drops can be stored in the fridge and used when needed. The cold drops will moisturise the eyes and wash out allergens. MEDICATED EYE DROPS After assessing your eyes, an optometrist at Mortimer Hirst is able to prescribe medicated eye drops to help control your allergies. One of the most effective eye drops available contains a combination of an antihistamine and a mast cell stabiliser. This can be used to relieve symptoms and as an allergy preventer. An anti-inflammatory eye drop can be prescribed for cases of severe itchiness. LIMIT THE USE OF DECONGESTANT EYE DROPS These are often marketed as eye drops for red eyes and are available over-the-counter. They work by constricting the blood vessels, making the eyes appear white. This is useful as a one-off (like when attending a special event) but using decongestants for more than 2-3 days can cause a rebound effect and your eyes will become more red after using them. Allergic conjunctivitis is a common condition that can affect any one at any time. Symptoms can be minimised with appropriate management. We were booked into a Tui Suite, a one bedroom suite complete with a lounge/kitchenette. I just loved the fact that every detail had been considered. Heavy wooden sliders divided the bedroom from the lounge and kitchen area. Our accommodation was warm and so sunny with clever black-out curtains so one could sleep in. The linen was beautiful and our room was cleaned every day. The bathroom was spectacular, a wet shower with no shower door. The tiles were a rich, rusty brown and absolutely nothing was spared. For those who wish to use one, there is a fold-down stainless steel seat in the shower.* Plume Villas offer the perfect spot for a family celebration, and it sprung to mind that these villas would be perfect for conferences and weddings too. The 12 villas are all different sizes, with the largest, the 3 bedroom villa, able to host up to 6 adults. We loved the sparkling warm swimming pool—so pleasant to use no matter the weather.

The staff ensure that the restaurant and café, both outstanding eateries, hum along with ease, and everyone is super friendly. The vibe at the café is unique, and if locals come in, they are recognised and loved by the staff. The restaurant staff are also very attentive and considerate. The maître d's in both the restaurant and café are the best, each with a wonderful sense of humour and always ready to chat. There is also a children’s menu, with plenty to choose from, so everyone is taken care of, which pretty much sums up the overall feeling of our stay with Plume in Matakana. A little teaser from the Plume Restaurant menu: the liver parfait with the Syrah jelly was outstanding. What a difference just six days can make!

ARO HĀ

It's 6 am. It’s still dark outside, and cold. I snuggle into the soft duvet – feeling cosy and warm, enjoying the feeling of smooth ﬁne linen on my skin. Check-out day today, and time to bid my designer bedroom sanctuary farewell. There is so much about this place that I will miss. After a quick shower I head on down to the spa. The air is crisp; dawn not far off. Most members of the group with whom I have spent the past six days are already hanging out in the spa reception. We chat quietly and are called in one by one for a weigh-in and measure. I have no expectations – but 15 minutes later feel totally blown away by the results of my check-in/check-out report. I have lost an average of 1cm from my calf, upper thigh, buttocks, stomach, waist and chest, a total of 6cm in less than six days. I have gained 0.3% muscle and lost 1.6% visceral fat. On arrival my blood pressure was 121/85, and resting heart rate, 75. Departure day—my blood pressure reading was is 96/66 and resting heart rate, 66. I am not the only one staggered by their check-out results, all members of the group are amazed by the stunning difference to their overall health. Something not measured at our spa check-out is the state of our mind space, but I will attempt to tell you about mine. After six days at Aro Hā—I was relaxed, my mind wide open and refreshed, and with lungfuls of clean Southern Alps mountain air. I am totally ready to take on the world once again.

I can honestly say that this physically stimulating programme has sculpted my body a bit, sharpened my mind and has left me yearning for more. With daily mindfulness practices, sub-alpine hikes, yoga, and heaps of dynamic movement, this programme is all that it’s made out to be plus so much more. The food is amazing, and the daily massages, well what can I say? Simply delicious! An Aro Hā retreat is equally wonderful for those travelling on their own, couples, mother/daughter combos and friends.

When a few months later I heard of a stunning new must-visit health retreat, situated close to Queenstown, sustainable, intelligently designed, at one with nature, offering weary life travellers like myself a totally different wellness escape, I knew that this was a place I had to visit. And last month my Aro Hā bucket list dream became a reality.

I ﬁrst became acquainted with Aro Hā around ﬁve years ago. We were visiting Queenstown and had taken a little tiki tour to Glenorchy. Always curious about new developments and enamoured of all sorts of architecture, I noticed a series of structures that seemed very much a part of the landscape; they looked special, tasteful, the genesis of a place to be visited in years to come. A galvanised farm gate hanging loosely across a dusty track, discouraged entry. I noticed a logo that looked something like a bee and the word Aro Hā underneath.

There was so much depth to my Aro Hā experience: there were lows, then highs, and a few inbetweens, just like the J-Curve Damian told us about on our ﬁrst night there. For a body used to regular doses of caffeine, the odd snack here and there—the glass of vino at night, the detoxing process was for a while, quite challenging. Regular mountain walks involving long uphill climbs had my thighs singing out for mercy. And then there were those early morning wake up calls! My relationship with my mobile device when away from work, has always been one of love-hate—so for me this part of the experience would ﬁt into the inbetweenish slot. As for the many highs, mere words and imagery barely do it justice, but I shall try. Aro Hā as a place to stay, is simply stunning in every respect—from the accommodation, to the architecture and interior design, the landscaping, the gardens, and fabulous facilities. The views are stunning, no matter where you are. That feeling of hygge is everywhere.

The people, including team leaders, facilitators, other staff, and guests with whom I shared those six days, enriched the experience big time. I love them all. I have always been a bit of a foodie—and am fascinated by new flavours and ways in which to prep new dishes. Aro Hā cuisine is an explosion of new flavours, textures, and tastes, each meal so thoughtfully curated and creatively plated. Eating mindfully became an easy thing to do, so in the moment was I with each amazing meal experience. Afternoon spa sessions were gratitude moments in every way: slow, stretched out, easy conversations, hot pools, and deliciously spot on massages. Spa time should, I reckon, become a national pastime, fixing relationships and solving problems!

QT MUSEUM WELLINGTON ART INITIATIVE An original canvas to showcase your masterpiece—be part of the art, design, curiosities and a dash of the absurd at QT Museum Wellington. QT Museum Wellington is all about the New Zealand art scene and this past June threw down a challenge to the creative community: to create in-room artworks for the wall space behind the bed heads of nine new guest rooms, including an optional six private balcony walls. When it came to diversity, style and medium, there was an overwhelming number of MoMA-worthy submissions. In the end, 19 artists were chosen for their work to be part of 25 new guest rooms on level four of the hotel. A number of the works have also been purchased to be displayed in the hotel’s public spaces. General manager of QT Museum Wellington, Garth Solly, said of the art initiative: “QT Museum Wellington is a cultural playground built on a wonderfully eccentric, largely national, art collection. We are excited to work with creatives to bring to life a fusion of eclectic and eccentric art to awe and amaze local and international guests during their stay. The hotel has a philosophy that thrives on actively supporting the local creative scene, which is why we’re giving an opportunity for artists to be a part of our history.”

My Lexus chauffeur, Kevin, drops me at the Auckland domestic airport. I’m off to Queenstown for a celebrity appearance wearing my Kublai Persian Jacquard, which is one of ﬁve in NZ. A quick airport meal, always rushed so I decide upon ferociously hot won ton soup to slow me down. I met fellow emcee , Lexus ambassador Murray Thom and his beautiful wife Anne seated next to me on the ﬂight, the conversation is hilarious!

Queenstown is awesome viewed from the Lexus RX350. I’m settled in my suite at The Hilton. Since it’s so southerly crisp I decide on a luxury bubble bath. Heaven. I’m obsessed with Grace Coddington’s autobiography, to be inspired by successful people who know their truth and don’t wear beige to ﬁt in with the ﬂock. I’d pick her for a lunch date anytime in a Lexus! I’m wet, warm and happy.

I’m an early bird. I love mornings. It’s so fresh and my brain is sharp. I do my best business negotiations early and on a double espresso buzz! I decide against going to the gym because I have no idea I’ll ﬁnd it, or the way back to my Hilton suite, so I do 100 press ups instead. There’s a knock at the door, my breakfast lands, still warm baked croissants, freshly squeezed carrot, ginger and orange juice, and more black coffee. The view from my room is breathtaking. I’m naked.

It’s a very cold, clear, clean Queenstown night and the launch is in full swing. The who’s who of QT locals, the league of magnificent Lexus management and ambassadors spread throughout the flash showroom drink their finest choices while the live entertainment delights everyone. Emcee Murray is excellent and led the charge of speeches from the dapper Lexus NZ general manager, Paul Carroll, to an inspirational Cam Calkoen. While my Nomad Trench Sand and Sky (Manahan Menswear) draws a lot of attention, the true stars are the Lexus models, especially the RC F to celebrate 10 years of exceptional “F” performance. Exclusively, it’s one of only 500 globally. And then I spy Marc Ellis …!

Today’s sightseeing in the Lexus LC 500, I throw on my season favourite Ulan Batar Nomad Trench. Queenstown is a destination like no other. We shoot over Lake Wakatipu with the powerful Remarkables mountain range as our backdrop.

The mascots of Mada are those brown, golden, mousesized, jumping, and even cartoonishly ringtail makis (the friendly lemurs). Their slow decline and range die-out raise a rather alarming prospect for the primates' future. With 85% of the wildlife and even plants as exclusively endemic, many nuances extracted from the forest and flora from natural medicines to new species each month are de rigor here, and the battle for the future of the island's integrity will hinge on more visitors and investment and more business and commerce. The election friction of 2018 and the black plague of 2017 has seen a drop in outside trust for the setting for sound growth and gains for business to bank on, however in these same years we have seen more visitors and interest than ever. With more flights to the capital added and more airlines there and to the northern paradise of Nosy Be (which far outshines its regional hotshot beaches in Mauritius and Seychelles) it may be tourism that ends up partially preserving what little forests and pristine ecosystems that remain. In the meantime, conscious and responsible tourism aside, just being here helps and rewards. We just love this rugged high country cabin, situated in the heart of South Island's Southern Alps. Inspired by the simple elegance of furniture designer, Jens Risomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s holiday home, owner, Kenny Smith, has created a stylish, yet simple backcountry hut, providing his family and, at times, guests, a unique wilderness experience. Verve caught up with Kenny a few weeks ago, check out the interview on the next page.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves.

My wife and I are both 40, we have two kids, aged 22 and 20. I’m a photographer who works internationally and my wife works in the medical industry.

Can you tell us a little bit about High Country Cabin, how it all happened? We both love the outdoors and a while back decided we wanted to invest in something that would keep us connected to that. As our kids moved out of home and began their own lives, we wanted to create something that we could all connect with and escape to. There is no better place to use as a base to explore the outdoors than where we are. All four seasons offer everything you’d want to do, mountaineering, hiking, ﬁshing, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding.

What/who inspired the design of your cabin?

We were inspired by a lot of places. I had been following the tiny home movement and was inspired by eliminating things and space that you don’t really need. We used that thinking to whittle things down to the basics, yet keep the essentials for comfort and relaxation. Out of the cabins around the world that inspired me, Jens Risom’s cabin on Block Island really stood out. I studied what I liked about it and it was the direction lighting from one main window. We used that idea to face the view of the mountain that Ohau Snowﬁeld is on. We’re surrounded by mountain views so you get vignettes of the surrounds through the small windows placed on the other sides as well. One of my strong beliefs is a small dwelling makes you feel part of the landscape much more appropriately than a large one. In fact, the smaller the space is, the more the surrounds come in.

Country Cabin’s best-loved features?

Interestingly features that are not there have become the most loved for us and people who have stayed. There is no TV, and a log burner is the main source of heating. Living outside of town, without broadcast TV and relying on ﬁrewood really reconnects you with the surrounding landscape. People also comment on the comfort of the built-in couch, the rustic kitchen, and the hot water pressure after a long day in the hills. There is nothing better than a really good shower!

Anna, who has more than two decades' industry experience, inherited the interior design firm from her mother in 2003. “As a child I was always rummaging through fabric samples, drawing and putting things together,” she says. “It was all quite normal to me!” She attended the prestigious KLC School of Design in London, but not before cutting her teeth in the home and design world. “I wanted to get as much background knowledge as I could before I went to study,” says Anna, “so that I had all of the principals and fundamentals of design.” Anna's impressive resume bulges: she’s managed the GP & J Baker showroom on King’s Road, worked in the framing and art, and flooring and building products industries, run a kitchen manufacturing company and studied the fundamentals of engineering. “It certainly gives me the edge over my competitors,” Anna says. “I can walk the walk and talk the talk. Whether I’m dealing with flooring guys, electricians, or cabinet makers, I understand the background to it all, and I can use that knowledge to my—and my clients’— advantage for better planning and better results. Cuthbert Interiors is known for its integrity. We have credibility all over the country, and that is so important to me.”

Anna says that like anyone in the design industry, she’s constantly on the lookout for inspiration: “It never stops. I’m always telling my kids to look up! People forget to do that, but it’s so important, there is so much to see at the tops of buildings and trees. There’s inspiration everywhere.” Though Anna does of course keep up with latest trends, she prefers to concentrate on “timeless appeal”: “That’s not to say you can’t tweak and change and do bits here and there, but I like to give people some longevity. A home will grow and change with the owners as they live in it, things will be swapped in and out—which I come in and do regularly for customers—but you shouldn’t have to change the whole scheme and every room every few years. Just let them evolve.” Is it important that the interior matches the exterior of the house? “Oh yes, there can definitely be a flow between the two, and that transition between the exterior and interior is important because you don’t want it to jar. For me the most important thing is to understand the client. It must be a collaborative evolution, working with the customers’ lifestyle and moulding and manipulating it so that we can get something really tasteful and beautiful. And always getting that a little wild card, something that may challenge them—that they may not even have considered or thought of.” Anna is stumped when asked for a favourite design or style of architecture—she’s worked with them all and gets a kick out of the eclecticism. “I’ve done everything: turn-of-the-century, last century, arts and crafts homes right through to concrete, cantilevered, contemporary boxes. I’m qualified in traditional UK training, as well as the modern stuff, so am able to work across the genres and blend things so that they seem cohesive.” All that counts, she concludes, is having happy customers at the end of the process: “Seeing them buzzing at the end of a job well done is what it’s all about, their smiles mean so much.”

Currently celebrating its fortieth year, Cuthbert Interiors is possibly New Zealand’s oldest interior design company, and its chief, Anna Cuthbert, too, believes in the power of colour. “Colour in the home is especially important because it keeps things fresh and interesting,” she says. “I’m not a huge fan of the grey-on-grey trend, I want to be excited and colours do that. Interiors should make you smile when you walk in. Colour is important for people’s psychology and outlook on life.”

“People in Europe are certainly less afraid of using colour. You only have to ﬂick through the magazines to see how much it is embraced, whereas here things tend to be a little more subdued. New Zealanders often like to play it safe. But everything that is available over there is available here. As a small country we have access to so much stuff and that makes us very lucky in the design and housing industry. It’s quite phenomenal.”

Draper is revered for founding Architectural Clearing House in 1925, believed to be the first proper interior design firm, and responsible for styling rooms in grand public institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco’s Fairmont and Mark Hopkins hotels and the Greenbrier of West Virginia. Carlton Varney, another American designer of note, and protegee of Draper, once described his mentor’s importance to the industry as comparable to that of Chanel’s influence on fashion: “the woman was a genius”. Vogue tells of Draper’s penchant for a “wild Technicolour mash-up of pinks with greens, turquoise, and orange” that she incorporated into a modern Baroque style.

How does the industry differ here to Europe?

In her 1939 tome, Decorating Is Fun!, legendary New York interior designer Dorothy Draper writes that decorating is “a delight in colour, an awareness of balance, a feeling for lighting, a sense of style, a zest for life, and an amused enjoyment in the smart accessories of the moment”.

» THE EVOLUTION OF INTERIOR DESIGN Like so much else, we can partly thank the Ancient Egyptians for interior design. Even those that dwelled in humble mud huts were known to brighten them with animal skins, sculptures and murals. Picking up where the Egyptians left off, the Ancient Greeks and Romans crafted intricate-carved wooden furniture and ivory and precious metal ornaments. They also introduced the likes of mosaic floors and frescoes. Both civilisations also mastered crafting cushions and tapestries. The fittingly titled Dark Ages saw a period far-less flamboyance, partly due to the rise of the Christianity which discouraged any dazzling displays of wealth (expect in their own churches, of course). This European era was a time of wood panelling, subdued textiles and stone floors. With the dawning of the Gothic era through to the Renaissance, living and public spaces once more benefitted from greater daring and imagination. There was greater focus on colour and carvings—marble floors and ornaments replaced stone and wood, colourful paintings were introduced, and furniture whittled from the finest of woods. Art was celebrated like never before! Baroque gave birth to the widespread use of stained glass, coloured marble and painted ceilings—think the Palace of Versailles in France. By the mid-18th century, intricate Asian styling made its mark on rococo by way of floral porcelain and furniture lined with tortoise shell. By the end of the century, neoclassical was riffing heavily on the style of Ancient Rome. The 19th century is known for experimentation. Rather than follow set looks and trends designers enjoyed greater freedoms to impart their own styles, and by the late 1800s, interior design was beginning to be embraced by those beyond the elite. But that’s not to say the modern era has not been without its movements—think art deco, art nouveau, minimalism and Bauhaus.

ICONS OF INTERIOR DESIGN Known as the ‘dean of American decorators’, Albert Hadley worked by the philosophy of “never less, never more”. He decorated the Kennedy White House, along with their own homes, as well as those of other high-society families such as the Rockefellers, Gettys and Astors. Hadley, however, remained humble, telling New York magazine that design was not about “fantasy beyond reality”, and that it’s “what you can achieve for the simplest person” that matters. From 1962, he formed a fruitful partnership with another legendary designer, Sister Parish (see below). A cousin of Dorothy Draper, the wonderfully-named Sister Parish (her real name was also Dorothy, but her childhood nickname of ‘Sister’ eventually stuck) opened an interior design store in New Jersey in 1929. Shunning the preferences of her antiques collecting dad, Parish preferred laidback offerings such as quilts, hooked rugs and oversized armchairs. She is credited with popularising the American country look of the 1960s. Born in New York in 1865, Elsie de Wolfe is credited as ‘America’s ﬁrst decorator’. Her life was full of compelling tales, educated in Scotland, as a youth she met Queen Victoria before moving back to the US to become an actress. Aged 61, de Wolfe became a Lady when she married British diplomat Sir Charles Mendl. Between all of this, she was commissioned to revamp New York’s ﬁrst elite social club exclusively for women, the Colony Club, and later the homes of America’s high society lured by her vibrant, antiVictorian eye. David Nightingale Hicks became the UK’s go-to designer of the 1960s, employed to redecorate quarters for Prince Charles and Princess Anne, along with the nightclub of the QE2 and a yacht for Saudi Arabia’s King Fahad. By the following decade, Hicks had his own range of wallpapers, fabrics and linens. His big break came when a magazine published an article about the makeover he did for his mum’s London home. Hicks was designing cereal boxes for an advertising agency at the time.

LYZADIE DESIGN STUDIO Lyzadie Renault hails from the verdant island nation of New Caledonia, born to a French father and Melanesian mother. Having one foot in the Pacific and the other in Europe shaped her upbringing until she came to New Zealand at a very young age. It’s the landscape and culture of New Zealand that has inspired her to start a new design studio that is already turning heads. Trained as an architect first in New Zealand and then at the prestigious Architectural Association in England, Lyzadie counts Zaha Hadid as one of her influences. It’s not hard to see why. TRENZSEATER Verve sits down with Ben Lewis, co-founder of Trenzseater, and begins by asking about his background in design. Growing up, I was inspired by my grandfather’s furniture business. Form an early age, his drive and passion for manufacturing some of the finest furniture in New Zealand gave me a grounding and foundation in an industry which I fell in love with. I was 14 when I designed the first sofa that went into production, and it was the start of many more. Now I design all furniture for TRENZSEATER. I had a vision to start a high-end furniture and interior design business in New Zealand, which I did at the age of 20, to cater for a market where clients wanted something personalised, different to what anyone else had. TRENZSEATER was established with my brother Hamish, and together we have grown the business into one of New Zealand’s most prominent furniture and interior design stores. Our interior design service grew purely through industry experience, with my interior design work now being highly regarded and recognised on an international level. TRENZSEATER has three stores throughout New Zealand which house all the products we manufacture to order in New Zealand, along with all our beautiful international brands from Europe. These stores truly showcase our interior design expertise, while demonstrating our unique quality of product and manner in which we present product. How would you describe your personal interior design style? It is sophisticated elegance. It’s a design with intriguing layers of classic textures and materials, encapsulating refined opulence, set on a grand scale. A timeless classic. Where does your design inspiration come from? I am inspired each day by design, through architecture, interior design and classic furniture design where there classic detailing provides a signature style. I am also inspired by fashion, art and antiques. Natural materials inspire me for their unique, classic qualities, such as marbles, stone and the character you get from solid timbers.

Generally, which direction do you feel design is heading? I believe design is moving towards interiors which are eloquently layered, providing layers of interest and personality to a design that makes spaces a pleasure to be in and enjoyed at the same time. We also see, in design, the use of matte and brushed metal finishes, brass in door hardware, and light fixtures, along with the use of a lot of natural marbles and stones. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2018 and beyond. • Include intriguing layers of texture, pattern and design • Incorporate colour subtly into your design • Use opulent grand scale objects • Use a diverse mix of materials • Incorporate well-appointed table lamps, floor lamps and pendants in your design If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to interior design, what would it be? Definitely to have an eye for detail. It’s the detail that sets a design apart from the ordinary and makes it something unique and special. What are your aims and goals for the next 12 months? To continue presenting beautiful work that clients admire, develop our retail stores within New Zealand and explore international opportunities. If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? A property developer. Anything else in closing? I love the quotes: “There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart, pursue those”, and “Dream big, think big, go big”.

PONSONBY'S NEW GEM Ponsonby is well-known as a hub for superb stores so it’s with great excitement that we welcome JI Homestore, the new addition to the interior design scene, , stocking Halo Established 1976 and Artwood. Before entering the doors of JI Home the twinkle of exquisite crystal lighting catches the eye through the window and crossing the threshold takes one into a spacious (400 square metre) haven of quality, comfort and—it has to be said—simply divine furnishings, lighting, flooring and accessories. A warm welcome from Elly and Anna is quickly forthcoming—no airs and graces among the splendour here – making me immediately feel at home. “That’s what we want,” says Tracey Johnston who founded Johnston Imports with her husband Matthew back in 2003. “Elly, Anna, Matt and I want people to feel at ease, to use the space, have a coffee by the fire, take a seat and enjoy the space as they ponder their home furnishings wants and needs.” Elly and Anna will be running the Auckland showroom and all hands have been on deck for the grand opening, Tracey has overseen a lot of the tasteful styling. “Tracey has a great eye,” says Anna. “Instead of just a sofa she’ll create a chic area.” The core lines at JI Home are Halo Established 1976 and Artwood, which together cover all four seasons with indoor and outdoor living. Peppered among the furniture pieces are accessories such as antique lanterns, wooden planter boxes, leather luggage and exquisite (locally) handmade statement candles encapsulated in oversized glassware. Collectively it creates a super-stylish home-y feel. Halo Established 1976 hails from the UK and uses traditional techniques and the finest materials to develop JI Home’s distinctive designs in-house. Creative Director and founder Timouthy Oulton

pushes the boundaries to create a balance between traditional and modern living. He’s inspired by a childhood immersed in his fathers antique business, a man from whom he inherited an eye for beauty and detail. Each Halo piece is made by hand, using timehonoured methods and simple tools. Tim combines labour intensive, tried and tested techniques with pure natural materials including leather, moleskin, linen, metal, timber and stone, which sit seamlessly alongside the sparkling crystal lighting. “Halo’s traditional techniques mean detailing will be hand punched or moulded in a workshop environment rather than a factory,” says Tracey. Halo has an exciting new collection just released this season—upcycled denim. Notably, the upcycled denim in pure white or blue is bound to be a ﬁrm favourite with the ability to whip it off and throw it in the washing machine—what can be better than that? Then there’s Artwood, with designs from Sweden. Founded in 1969, Artwood is a family business inspired by long journeys to the East and the exotic materials sourced there, which form the basis of Artwood's design. “It’s American East Coast mixed with the pulse of the city and rural life or a house by the sea,” says Tracey. “We call it Artwoodstyle.” The range lends a natural ambience formed by durable and beautiful rattan and teak. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RENTAL PROPERTY MANAGER Some people think we just collect the rent, which we do and it goes into a secure trust account, similar to what law firms operate, but at Quinovic Parnell and Quinovic Viaduct, we also do much more than that. SO WHAT EXACTLY DOES A PROPERTY MANAGER DO? Property Maintenance: We look after our owners’ properties including all aspects of repairs and maintenance. This means we work with builders, plumbers, electricians, cleaners, gas fitters, gardeners, arborists and lawn mowing service providers. We organise for pools and spas to be cleaned and serviced. We brief tilers, roofers, carpet layers, curtain and blind installers/repairers, glass fixers, insulation installers, lock smiths, painters and decorators, pest exterminators, house washers, asbestos removers, chimney sweeps, heat pump and air conditioning servicers, drainage and sewage consultants. We talk to architects, engineers, body corporate managers, insurance brokers and underwriters. And sometimes even neighbours about things like renovations, subsidence, boundary fencing and overhanging trees. Property Inspections: We conduct regular inspections of all our rental properties, which includes a written report and photos. We check the continued compliance of the property for things like operational smoke alarms, asbestos identification, insulation, weather tightness and mould. We then liaise with our owners and tenants about any outstanding issues. Accounting: We breakdown and explain invoices and costs to our owners and tenants. We reconcile and allocate charges for water bills, property maintenance charges and tenant rental payments. We chase up rental arrears and we receipt and later release tenants’ bond monies. Legal Accountability: We are the property owner’s legal representative and we ensure the properties we manage, and the owners we represent, comply with the Residential Tenancies Act (1986) and its amendments,

Research: We keep up-to-date with market rental prices, which can show seasonal variation. We assimilate the latest tenancy tribunal judgements and legislative changes affecting rental properties, we keep our owners and tenants updated, and we alter our business practices where required. For new tenancies, we vet tenancy applications and check tenant references. Marketing: We write compelling rental property advertising to attract great tenants, sometimes we take the photos, other times we arrange for this to be done by professional photographers, and we use social media to further promote properties to a wider audience. WHAT'S ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT? September is ‘Bee Aware Month', a whole month that’s dedicated to celebrating all bees! It has been successfully spreading awareness of the importance of bees for the last eight years and each year gets bigger and better.

TIPS ON HOW YOU CAN BEE THE CHANGE:

You’ve probably noticed the hum in the media about these misunderstood little ﬂying insects. Why? Well, the world’s bee population is in decline, which has a potentially devastating effect on our eco system and our veggie, fruit and ﬂowering plants that rely on pollination.

BEE FOOD: One of the easiest ways you can help bees is by planting a bee-friendly garden in your backyard. Bees will forage on wild ﬂowers and bee-friendly plants for nectar and pollen, which provide them with energy and protein for growth. Now is the time to plant your bee-friendly plants including lavender, citrus trees and rosemary.

Each honey bee colony requires a billion ﬂowers a season to survive. Incredibly, each honey bee can only produce one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey, but together in a safe environment a hive can make up to 150kg a year! So, this month spare a thought for the humble bee and 'beecome' the change by making sure New Zealand’s ecosystem is bee safe. If there’s anything we can learn from the honey bee, it’s that if we each do our part, we can accomplish greatness together.

HYDRATION: While bees don’t drink, they do collect water for

the hive. Fill a shallow dish and add marbles or stones for the bees to perch on. Once bees ﬁnd a good source of water, they will return regularly—a win for both of you.

it’s more about what you’re not getting when you choose organic as opposed to conventional produce and food. Some basic fruit and veg items can have dozens of chemicals sprayed on them and used through the growing process. Our bodies are simply not designed to work these toxic substances through our systems, and we are often left with a nutrient devoid, chemical cocktail. I know for me personally, I have experienced a dramatic improvement in my health since focusing on organic food.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH CERES ORGANICS? When I was introducing more

For our health, the planet and, of course, the animals. I know when I transitioned to being vegan, I found it really hard to latch onto someone that had a fun, approachable manner to it. So I’m very conscious to stick to the ABCs: authentic, basic and with care.

Quinoa would be number one! Their nut butters are totally delicious and I’m loving the new brownie and bliss ball mixes too. Tamari would be a staple and the sesame oil, seeing as I’m such an Asian food fan. Oh, and their new coconut cream and milk, basically everything of theirs!

Quinoa is a must, cacao powder, oat milk, hemp protein powder, leafy greens, ferments like sauerkraut, Sunfed chicken free chicken, and my pantry is full of all sorts of magical superfoods and herbs like ashwagandha, digestive enzymes, spirulina, medicinal mushroom powders, hemp oil, gelatinised maca, tulsi holy basil and triphala to name a few! They might sound exotic and bizarre but have actually been used in the East for hundreds of years! Us Westerners are just catching up.

WHY AREN’T MORE ORGANIC FOODS AVAILABLE TO US? Unfortunately, it’s expensive to be labelled and certified organic. There are annual fees to be certified and intensive processes to maintain. I know certain companies refuse to seek certification purely

Our skin is our biggest organ, and it ultimately, is just another form of nutrient intake, albeit on a much slower, incremental rate of intake! I remember when I owned my own beauty salon and product range, some seven or eight years ago now, parabens were still kind of an accepted thing to put into beauty products. Now, you’d be crazy to develop a product with them, given the evidence. I think maybe there’s still a bit of a 'fad' stigma around organic food. Trust me, it isn’t going anywhere. And the more we are informed (and inspired) around the power we have to live full, healthy lives, the more people will wise up to the fact that it is the way to go. INGREDIENTS 350g cherry tomatoes 3 tbsp olive oil ¾ tsp cumin seeds ½ tsp light brown sugar 3 garlic cloves, finely sliced 3 thyme sprigs 5g fresh oregano: 3 sprigs left whole and the rest picked, to serve 1 lemon: 3 strips of rind and 1 tsp zest 350g extra thick Greek- style yoghurt, fridge-cold 1 tsp Urfa chilli flakes (or ½ tsp regular chilli flakes) flaked sea salt and black pepper — Serves four as a starter or mezze

One of the beauties of this dish lies in the exciting contrast between the hot, juicy tomatoes and fridge-cold yoghurt, so make sure the tomatoes are straight out of the oven and the yoghurt is straight out of the fridge. The heat of the tomatoes will make the cold yoghurt melt, invitingly, so plenty of crusty sourdough or focaccia to mop it all up with is a must alongside. METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan. 2. Place the tomatoes in a mixing bowl with the olive oil, cumin seeds, sugar, garlic, thyme, oregano sprigs, lemon strips, half-a-teaspoon of flaked salt and a good grind of pepper. Mix to combine, then transfer to a baking tray just large enough to fit all the tomatoes together snugly. Roast for 20 minutes, until the tomatoes are beginning to blister and the liquid is bubbling. Turn the oven to the grill setting and grill for 6–8 minutes, until the tomatoes start to blacken on top. 3. While the tomatoes are roasting, combine the yoghurt with the grated lemon zest and ¼ teaspoon of flaked salt. Keep in the fridge until ready to serve. 4. Once the tomatoes are ready, spread the chilled yoghurt on a platter (with a lip) or in a wide, shallow bowl, creating a dip in it with the back of a spoon. Spoon over the hot tomatoes, along with their juices, lemon skin, garlic and herbs, and finish with the picked oregano and chilli flakes. Serve at once, with some bread.

3 tbsp olive oil, plus a little extra to serve 3 garlic cloves, finely sliced 1 large red onion, finely chopped (160g) ½ tbsp picked thyme leaves 2 small aubergines, cut into chunks, about 5 x 2cm (420g) 200g cherry tomatoes 180g Puy lentils 500ml vegetable stock 80ml dry white wine 100g crème fraîche 1 tsp Urfa chilli flakes (or ½ tsp regular chilli flakes) 2 tsp picked oregano leaves salt and black pepper —

Few things bring me more pleasure in the kitchen than taking a set of familiar ingredients and seeing them in a new light. It’s happened here with this stew and also the Puy lentil and aubergine dish. The two ingredients lists are very similar—the aubergine, cherry tomatoes, olive oil, garlic and oregano. Both dishes – though equally delicious—are completely different from one another. It’s one of the many reasons I love aubergines: they’re so versatile and can be cooked in such different ways to yield such different results. Serve the stew either as a hearty starter or a side, or else as a main, served with any grain you like. The stew can be made up to three days ahead and kept in the fridge— just warm through and add the crème fraîche, oil, chilli ﬂakes and oregano before serving. METHOD 1. Put two tablespoons of oil into a large, high-sided sauté pan and place on a medium high heat. Add the garlic, onion, thyme and quarter-teaspoon of salt and fry for eight minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden. Tip into a bowl, leaving the oil behind. Set aside. 2. Place the aubergines and tomatoes in a bowl and season with quarter-teaspoon of salt and plenty of pepper. Add the remaining oil to the same pan (don’t worry about wiping it clean) and, once very hot, add the aubergines and tomatoes. Fry for 10 minutes, on medium high, turning them often until the aubergine is soft and golden-brown and the tomatoes are beginning to blacken. Return the garlic and onion to the pan, then add the lentils, stock, wine, 450ml of water and threequarter-teaspoon of salt. Bring to the boil. Lower the heat to medium and simmer gently for about 40 minutes, until the lentils are soft but still retain a bite. 3. Serve warm, or at room temperature, with a dollop of crème fraîche, a drizzle of oil and chilli ﬂakes and oregano on top.

We catch up with Benny Castles and Andreas Mikellis to talk all things Project Runway New Zealand. ANDREAS MIKELLIS, MENTOR

Andreas, as a mentor what does your role require? My role is to support the designers, give them feedback and to encourage them to produce the most exciting and innovative work. Do you feel from that ﬁrst meeting in the workroom that some designers stand out more than others? Some designer’s personalities are more gregarious than others, but all the designers have their own individual strengths, and each challenge stretches their skill levels in different ways, they all stand out in their own way! Watching past episodes of Project Runway there seems to be a lot of drama going on in these episodes. Can you let our readers know if this happens on the NZ show? Are you the one to temper these dramas? It’s a very heightened environment with extremely short deadlines, and if you put a group of talented and ambitious designers in this space together, tensions can rise and dramas unfold! What was the standout moment for you? There are so many standout moments, from designers discovering that they had design talents in areas that they had previously no experience in, to the extraordinary resourcefulness many of the designers showed.

Benny, you have a style that stands out in the crowd. Is this something that you are looking for in the designers? Yes and no! Fashion runways are about creating moments of inspiration and excitement— garments and concepts that lift your spirits, take your breath away and create an insatiable allure—that is what I am looking for from the designers. Whilst I put myself together in a certain way that feels right to me, I am not looking for the designers to please me, but rather shock me with their talent and their individuality. Is there a diverse cast of designers? The show represents New Zealand at its most diverse, whether that be by sex, ethnicity or age—most importantly the show has found a collection of unique and characterful personalities. The judging was done blind so you really identify with their distinct and unique creativity irrespective of all the other diversity represented. What is the best advice you can offer a student who has a desire to become a clothing designer? Work hard and then work harder and most importantly do the work for the passion of it and you will never be disappointed. Perhaps also always listen respectfully to advice passed on by those who have done it before, but always respectfully disregard advice passed on by those who have done it before! What for you is a standout memory from this series? It's not one memory, but week after week all of the designers were able to create such extraordinary solutions to the briefs and their passion, commitment and creativity did not go unnoticed—with tight timelines and limited budgets their work was nothing short of spectacular and being able to witness these moments has been humbling and energising. I hope everyone at home gets the same feeling!

Following a six-month volunteer stint in Peru where Georgie worked at The Maria Salome Ferro boys’ orphanage for impoverished boys in Cusco, she was inspired to return to New Zealand and do her part to bring joy to the kids she had met. Simply walking away and returning to normal life wasn’t an option for her. Children's welfare has long been a passion of Georgie’s and she realised that by combining her love for jewellery and her desire to help young kids she is able to make a positive difference in the kids lives, as well as raise awareness for these ‘forgotten’ children. Returning home to Auckland, Georgie set about learning how to design and make jewellery. While she has since handed over the crafting to three jewellers, she continues in a very hands on role to design each range. Georgie creates the special moulds herself and the pieces are then handmade to order. 10% of all sales go to The Maria Salome Ferro boys’ orphanage in Cusco, Peru, to help improve the lives of boys whose livelihood depends on goodwill alone. LNO stands for Los Niños Olvidados, meaning ‘The Forgotten Children’, of which there are many in Peru. INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE It seems that almost everyone I know is away sunning themselves on a beach somewhere or gallivanting through European cities with nothing to do but taunt me via their Instagram feeds. I know that social media is someone’s highlight reel, but boy it’s hard not to feel like you’re the only person who didn’t take a mid-winter break to some exotic locale! Travel is one of life’s great joys—it not only refreshes the mind and body but can also inspire us, and if we’re clever enough we can capture the essence of something new to bring back to our everyday ordinariness once home. I did do a rather big sixweek trip earlier in the year, travelling through NYC and Europe in their rather inhospitable (but beautiful) winter. Here’s a few things I managed to bring back to use in my own wardrobe: • You need less stuff. Although I admit to a bit of boredom wearing the same outﬁts on repeat, I did have to make what I had with me work each day. I never felt scruffy, and I had each day covered. In fact, I even sent a parcel of stuff home after a couple of weeks as I knew by then I wouldn’t be wearing it.

• Inspiration is everywhere. From the style of the students on the streets in Mitte, Berlin, through to the elegant women in the boutiques of Paris, take elements of what you see and work it into your wardrobe. For me, I loved how the girls in the UK really embraced wearing make-up, I noted the brooches on the jackets of even the young girls on the Paris Metro, the oversized biker jackets on women rather than slim-ﬁtted versions and the ubiquitous trainers worn with everything, everywhere. • Buy an item of clothing or piece of jewellery you love and every time you wear it, you’ll be transported back to the moment you bought it and smile. A usable souvenir is so much more worthwhile than a trinket that sits on a shelf. Of course, coming home after a magical trip can be very cruel, especially as our weather is less than lovely right now. Do you often ﬁnd yourself feeling like you got up on the wrong side of the bed? Fluctuating moods can completely change our experience of life, affecting not just how we feel about each and every day but also our relationships with those around us. The relationship between our emotions and our hormones is symbiotic. Put simply, our hormones can affect our emotions and our emotions can affect our hormones. Let’s take a closer look at how this can affect us.

HOW YOUR HORMONES AFFECT YOUR MOOD There are certain hormones that can have a signiﬁcant impact on how we feel. One you might be more familiar with is serotonin. Commonly referred to as our “happy hormone”, serotonin functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain and helps us to feel happy, calm and content. What you may not know about this lovely hormone is that up to 95% of it is made in our gut. It’s hard to feel great when you are suffering with digestive challenges! Another hormone that can affect our mood is progesterone. When we think about progesterone, we might only think about the role it plays in our fertility but this powerful hormone has other biological functions in the body. Progesterone is a powerful anti-anxiety agent, an anti-depressant, and a diuretic, which means

it helps us to eliminate excess ﬂuid. It is supposed to be the dominant sex hormone in the second half of the menstrual cycle, but it’s common these days for women in their menstruation years to have too much estrogen and/or low progesterone levels, both of which disrupt hormonal balance and can contribute to mood swings, anxious feelings or feeling low. It’s also common for women to be churning out stress hormones, which can compromise adrenal production of progesterone—our primary source after menopause.

HOW YOUR EMOTIONS AFFECT YOUR HORMONES Our biochemistry is affected by how we think and feel. When we worry, fret or feel anxious or stressed, it has a ﬂow-on effect to all of our body systems and can send our hormonal balance out of whack. This is because our body is wired to perceive stress as impending danger. It doesn’t understand that you’re feeling stressed because it takes so long to get the family out the door and now you’re late to your meeting, for example. To your body, stress—whether perceived (i.e. based on your thoughts) or real (i.e. based on actual physical danger)—means that your life is under threat. Since your body’s primary objective is to preserve your life, it hijacks your biochemistry and sends messages to prioritise the production of stress hormones and vital processes over everything else. So how do we reduce the impact that stress has on our hormone balance? Quite simply we need to look at our stress response. Unless we stop our body from perceiving stress in everyday life, it is going to continue sending the message to our body to prioritise our survival and downregulate the function of other body systems, disrupting our hormonal symphony. A step in this direction might involve exploring our perception of pressure and urgency and saving it for when we really need it, rather than making what we get to do each day promote the stress response.

GOODBYE, DRY EYE Verve sits down with pioneering eye surgeon Dr Dean Corbett, an internationally-renowned ophthalmologist and two-decade veteran at Auckland Eye, New Zealand’s centre of excellence for eye care, to discuss eye health and their all-new facility for dry eye. “My interest in medicine arose from a fascination with the workings of the human body and the desire to understand it,” says the doctor. “I was fascinated by both the body’s simplicity and its complexities. The realness of it all. Of course, I also wanted to make a difference and help people.” Dean says that he decided to specialise in ophthalmology because of its “black and whiteness” —where many interventions have immediate and predictable results. There is a certain ﬁnesse required (not to mention steady hands—Dean also previously worked part-time as an engraver, “it certainly helps with the microsurgical skills!”) to address problems within the human eye, which he compares to be analgous to a camera. “It is something that you can see and understand and can intervene to get a positive outcome, with techniques being ever-improved through ever-evolving technology. Even registrations for the Blind Foundation have been on the decline, in contrast with the ageing population, which just shows how far the practice and technologies have advanced.” Some procedures require extreme levels of dexterity, requiring not only the use of both hands, but both feet too, with foot pedals with up to 15 buttons.

IT ALL SOUNDS QUITE STRESSFUL. HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT REASSURING YOUR PATIENTS DURING THE OPERATIONS?

“Some surgeons prefer complete silence, but I like a relaxed ‘normal’ environment, and talk to people throughout. I’ll try to put people at ease, take them to a different headspace so that they don’t focus on

what’s happening, it can be a very seamless process. We call it verbal anaesthesia.”

HOW ABOUT RECOVERY TIME?

“It’s very fast, typically days, but sometimes even hours. People are usually able to drive and go about their normal activities the day after surgery.”

DO MOST PATIENTS VISIT DUE TO MEDICAL OR PRACTICAL REASONS?

“Every ophthalmologist at Auckland Eye has different specialities. Mine is predominantly glaucoma, along with vision and focus correction to enable patients to see better without being dependent on their glasses— today there are ways and means of achieving that for nearly everyone. Our job is to understand patients’ expectations and meet them. It’s the old rule of making sure that you under-promise and over-deliver, and that’s generally what we do.” Dean reveals that an ever more recurring problem is the issue of dry eye, caused by the amount of time sat staring at devices. “We’re using instruments that have to be at near-distance—as opposed to staring at TVs—so people are getting problems of presbyopia,”

he says. “We also blink less, which when coupled with air-conditioned ofﬁces, offers a double-whammy in terms of dry eye.” Dean describes the dry facility at Oasis Spa as “second to none”. He reveals how new technologies over the past three years have provided reliable clinical evidence that they can make a difference in eye health where there were previously few treatments other than adding lubricants, which may be effective, but don’t treat the underlying cause of the problem. “Our facility offers a 90% chance of improving symptoms,” says the doctor. “It’s akin to going to the dentist. Most people will go because they’ve been sent an appointment reminder, but the bottom line is that they don’t want to lose their teeth. If you look at elderly people who have not addressed their dry eyes, you can see that many are in discomfort. Their eyelids are red and inﬂamed. But it can all be avoided, and that is our aim. We want to create a whole new thought process, to encourage people to have their eyes examined to see if they are at risk at later a stage in life and provide preventative treatment. It’s going to be a new paradigm around eye treatment.”

If we provide additional support and scaffold to these key ligaments at a deeper layer, we can realign and elevate the overlying soft tissue envelope. This translates to a subtle, refreshed, more youthful contour, without appearing 'done'!

The client below was so wrapped with her results, she was keen for them to be shared. These photos are taken from the same angle before and two weeks following treatment. You will notice the eyebrow has been beautifully elevated to restore the highlighting of youth at the outer aspect of her brow. YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE CONSIDERING A FACELIFT

An experienced Kiwi plastic surgeon shares what you need to know before, during and after facelift surgery. I Nobody needs a facelift. In the words of Bono: "You can never get enough of what you don’t really need now." Be certain in your mind your agenda for seeking facial rejuvenation. Be prepared to invest time and money in your physical appearance. Understand the risks and balance them against the benefits. II Paying top dollar does not guarantee you the best result. Choose your plastic surgeon carefully and seek alternative opinions. The ‘gold standard’ is a plastic surgeon with the qualification FRACS (Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons) with experience in both reconstructive and aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery. There are many ‘pretenders’ in the facelift surgery market place. Don’t be fooled by clever advertising, published testimonials or slick salesmanship. Ask to see examples of the surgeon’s previous work, especially medium to longterm results (1–5 years). Expect to pay $10,000-plus for a standard lower face/neck lift. It is an investment in your physical aesthetic and psychological self-confidence. If you don’t need it, don’t have it. Ditto, if money is too tight to mention. III Every human face is unique so beware of techniques that do not allow for variability. The spectrum of procedures for facial rejuvenation include: minimalist (contour volume enhancement with autologous fat), conservative superficial plane re-contouring, deep plane anatomically targeted manipulations of facial spaces and/or augmentation of atrophic bony contours that support the overlying soft tissues. These are the days of miracle and wonder and we live in an age where more scientific knowledge of applied anatomy and ageing physiology exists for those plastic surgeons who are properly trained. IV Facelift surgery will make you look different but should not produce results that are unnatural. In plastic surgery, perfection is only just good enough, the human body heals in variable conditions (some beyond control of the surgeon), so be prepared for the possibility of revisional surgery. The consultation process, surgical workup with

old photographs, informed consent with virtual reality software programmes like Crysliax and financial consent are paramount. Expect a cooling down period for careful consideration, reflection and decisions to postpone, reject or accept the surgeon's recommendations. V The patient needs support during the perioperative process because facelift surgery is real surgery with all the usual symptoms and signs of wounding, inflammation and healing. This is initially provided by the nurses, anaesthetist and surgeon during your admission, surgery and discharge. VI Over many years I have come to recognise that most patients want the minimum for the maximum both in terms of aesthetic improvement and recovery time. VII Surgery as a day-case under intravenous sedation with long-acting local anaesthetics is the ideal for my patients, but the options of general anaesthesia by a consultant anaesthetist and overnight stay in a private suite are also offered. Drains are rarely required in my experience, but may be indicated during the surgery. VIII Post-operative day one is associated with a dressing change and reassurance from the surgeon and his staff. For the first week Frame from England recommends a soft neck collar for soft tissue splintage, which I sometimes adopt. IX The early recovery period is at least a week, by which time all sutures have been removed and the patient can return to everyday activities, including work and socialising. I always suggest to my patients to have a new or modified hairstye to avoid the comments of ‘nosey parker’ peers and friends. X The patient must be physically and emotionally well before undergoing this form of rejuvenative surgery. — Words: Michael F. Between Two - Douglas Wright and Kelly Nash Between Two is an intimate double-bill featuring short works by Douglas Wright and Kelly Nash. Douglas Wright will present M.Nod, a meditation in the ﬂesh on the realm of dreams and visions: the night-world. The dancer falls, through "nodding”, into the arms of Morpheus, into the night-language of Finnegan’s Wake, but is repeatedly jolted back into the waking state, only to succumb again. Kelly Nash will present My Inner Sound, a piece which exposes a normally silent body in duet with a ghost, between two moments of a beginning and end. Much research has proven the power of music to soothe away our stress, with scientists even managing to name the most snoozeinducing tunes out there. A recent study by British neuroscientists at Mindlab International found that music can reduce anxiety by up to 65%, while the song that topped their laid-back list was ‘Weightless’ written by ambient group Marconi Union in collaboration with sound therapists (do check it out online, it’s blissful). Such is the song’s soothing effectiveness that it caused many participants to become drowsy, with study author Dr David Lewis-Hodgson, even advising against listening to it while driving, “because it could be dangerous”! The study’s top ten tranquil hits include well-known artists such as Adele, Enya, All Saints and Mozart. (I can’t decide whether or not an inclusion in such a list should be considered a compliment, but I’m leaning towards not.) Even communal kipping at concerts is a now a thing; very speciﬁc concerts, however—people aren’t simply turning up to watch, say, Coldplay (who also made it on to that list with ‘Strawberry Swing’) cradling a sleeping bag, mat and an eye mask. One of the earliest proponents of the sleep concert was new-age Californian musician Robert Rich who held them in the early 1980s while at Stanford University. He stopped playing until the late 1990s, citing the exhausting nature of the all-night performances, and now plays limited lowlit venues that sell out in a blink. Guests arrive cradling sleeping bags, mats and eye masks. “It’s really about a different kind of listening,” Rich tells the Hufﬁngton Post. “I encourage [concertgoers] to relax because the concert goes all night long.” Rich says that the intention of his performances are not necessarily to induce a restful night’s sleep, rather to “give people permission to explore their own inner consciousness”.

German-born British composer Max Richter has upped the ante of this artform, playing packed out sleep shows at esteemed venues such as London’s Wellcome Collection Museum, the Philnarmonie de Paris and the Sydney Opera House. And Richter’s gigs, that were born from his 2015 lullaby-like album, Sleep, come with proper beds, which is the least you could expect when forking out US$250 per ticket. Writer Melissa Matthews for Men’s Health describes the eclectic nature of the concert-goers in New York, with some dressed in pyjamas ready to settle in for the night while others simply stop by out of curiosity for a couple of hours. “Most people do a bit of everything,” she writes, “meaning they’ll nap, wake up to catch a few tunes, then drift back to sleep.” “I feel like there aren’t any rules, people ﬁnd their own way with it,” says Richter. “It’s very informal. It feels like an open community really.” Though Matthews admits to feeling energised when waking at 6am on a Sunday morning, she doubts she entered a deep state of sleep— which, admittedly isn’t necessarily the point. Guardian writer Kate Hennessey, one of 200 souls that attends the Sydney Opera House concert, certainly has a more romantic experience owing to the thunderous rainstorm pounding the giant windows overlooking Sydney Harbour Bridge. The audience are certainly more subdued than their North American counterparts—though Richter tells them that there are no rules Hennessey says that noone speaks, and even eye contact seems invasive. “You sleep, you wake—and if you are lucky, as we are today,” she writes, “it is an awakening.” — Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

It became quite competitive. PANAMERICANA GRILLE AND DINER MERCEDES-AMG GLC 63 S COUPE REVIEW NEW ZEALAND

Google ‘Panamericana’ and you’ll get results that vary from a Peruvian TV network and a university in Mexico, to a 90-minute road trip documentary, a gruelling motor race and numerous diners serving up a whole host of culturally inspired cuisine. But add a ‘grille’ to your search and you discover something totally different to sink your teeth into. With its proud vertical slats, the Panamericana Grille dates back to the early '50s and was ﬁrst spotted on the nose of the motorsport icon that was (and I guess still is) the Mercedes 300SL. This ‘Super Light’ Gullwing sports car dominated the era’s endurance races and notably won the 1952 Carrera Panamericana cup in Mexico, this was despite, or maybe in spite of, a vulture smashing through its windscreen and drivers (Karl Kling and Hans Klenk) stopping to build a ‘cage’ in its absence (incidentally, that 300SL is now a ‘hall of famer’ and museum piece). Anyway, revised for the 2018 AMG GT, the Panamericana grille commanded such a visual impact that Mercedes-AMG is seemingly turning this into a signature piece for the brand—and

this was the first thing that grabbed my attention when I picked up the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe to review. The contrast of the medium-sized SUVs pure ‘Polar White’ shell, with the deep black grille and inset lower air ducts makes this AMG model’s kerbside appeal very dramatic, especially when you add in the carbon fibre mirror housing and enormous rear lip spoiler of the Exterior Carbon Pack and then finish it off with large, black 21inch AMG Cross-spoke shoes. The carbon fibre theme continues inside with the centre console and dash generously smothered in this fine composite while the supportive sports furniture was smothered in luxurious nappa leather. Infotainment comes via a 21.3cm TFT colour display and Burmester-supplied the tunes. The sloping external rear-end styling of the AMG’s coupe styling would have me believe that the interior passenger space would be compromised, however, although there is around 200L of extra luggage space in favour of the regular SUV, the

coupe offers up a shade over 3 inches of extra headspace (and even more for those in the front seat when you open the sunroof). Then comes that delicious AMG performance engine. What can I say? The 4L V8 Bi-turbo is a show-stopper. In comfort, it’s fairly restrained and will give you reported combined fuel efﬁciencies of 10.9L/100km but that aside, as you move up the driving mode settings of Sport, Sport + and Race, this family-sized SUV lets its 375kW and (get this) 700Nm loose on the world, but don’t panic, there are a raft of elaborate driver aids and the Mercedes-AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system to keep you pointed in the right direction. The GLC 63 S boasts a zero to 100km/h time of 3.8s and I can quite believe it, but it’s the hiss, pop and roar when it downshifts that for me, continued to be a source of both elation and amusement—it really brings out the inner child. I’d be bending the truth if I told you I went on a long family jaunt to the coast or engaged some of its undoubtedly impressive semi-autonomous assists (such as adaptive cruise, blind spot and

lane keep) and headed out on the three-lane highway south, but the fact is, I took to the highly engaging roads that make up Rodney and its surrounding areas and quite simply played. With no other vehicles in sight, I spent my time slowing to a near stop then racing up to the speed limit (windows down to let that V8 roar into the cabin), I hugged corners and let rip on the long straights, paddling up and down all nine gears along the way. I should say that I was testing out the sports suspension, the precise steering and the AMG Speedshift MCT (multiple clutch) transmission, but quite frankly I was just having an endless amount of fun. Shame I had to return it. I’d like to believe that I’m a simple kind of guy and as such, I only need a few things to make me happy. My family for one thing (I guess I have to say that), I like ﬁne food, but a burger and fries from a roadside diner is certainly just as high up on the list. Oh, and now, of course, a fast, impressive Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe with a totally immersive V8 engine, good-looking Panamericana Grille and some free time to play with it—not much to ask now, is it? MAZDA CX-8 REVIEW

CLICKING INTO PLACE There is a certain sense of satisfaction when things click into place. It could be a problem that you finally solve, that eureka moment when the light finally dawns or, as is the case with the first ever Mazda CX-8, where the missing a part of the puzzle is found combined with the reassuring feel and comforting sound as you turn its numerous grooved bezel dials. I attended the New Zealand launch of the Mazda CX-8 a couple of months ago and it was easy to see why they were so excited about its arrival, but it’s when you handed the keys (okay, keyfob) for a more extended drive that it shows its true worth and this week I was given just such a chance. The Mazda CX-8 offers the seven-seater passenger room and not far off the luggage space that comes with their CX-9 model but with the driveability and poise that’s more akin to their CX-5. With KODO design providing the backbone for this new SUV, there’s a sophistication to its profile, more flow to the vehicles lines and less drama, even when sitting on 19inch high-gloss alloy wheels. The now distinctive Mazda grille and nose include LED daytime running lamps and adaptive (i-Activsense) LED headlights. The rear includes a roofline spoiler, a remote-operated power tailgate, dual chrome capped exhaust tips and LED lights that venture around to meet the subtle shoulder line. Keyless entry gives you access to the CX-8’s modern and luxurious interior and (as I was reviewing the Limited model) you’re immediately struck with the deep nappa leather aroma that emanates from its very plush, aged merlot furniture. There is a lot of focus around the driver, with an uncluttered horizon and a seating position that allows for easy interaction with all manner of driving necessities, however, with a three-row cabin that’s been lavished with comfort and connectability, the (up to six) passengers don’t exactly get it tough. There’s also 775L of third-row seat-down luggage space to play with should you choose to only take a selected number of family members or friends.

I could go on about the CX-8’s suite of driver’s aids (radar cruise control, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, head up display...), smartphone connection, 10-speaker Bose stereo system, but the thing that really grabbed my attention was how mechanically satisfying the A/C, volume and infotainment dials were. I know they’re the same across most of the Mazda range now, it’s just as I relaxed in heated seat and steering-wheel comfort, the tactility and gratifying sensation as the dials clicked with each turn had my mind wandering towards a career in safe cracking—little things huh? Then there’s the engine. The CX-8 comes equipped with Mazda’s SKYACTIV-D powertrain. An advanced diesel engine that via a 6-speed auto gearbox, serves up 140kW of power and gives you access to 450Nm from 2,000 rpm. When you complete this picture with their AWD and G-Vectoring control for stoic corner handling, you get a powerful drive with 6l/100km efficiency. With only three of us, I admit that I don’t have a big family, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t like our own space from time to time (read into that what you will). The CX-8 gave each of us a row to play with, and my son quickly ‘dibbed’ the back row (just as well, he’s a little young to drive). We did the town and country experience tour, which included the regular mall and school run chores, four trips to football (one of them a tournament) and a beach visit for celebratory ice-creams. I kid you not, the CX-8 handles like a sedan on the road the quietness of the engine didn’t go unnoticed, or in fact, it did. There’s plenty of room for an extended family or those that like to tote around a lot of gear, yet it all fits nicely into a near medium-sized SUV frame. Mazda already has an impressive lineup of SUVs ranging from the compact CX-3 to the large and luxurious CX-9 so adding another number to the fold may, on the face of it, seem a bit bemusing, however, when you realise what this new CX-8, seven-seat SUV has to offer it obviously all starts to click. — Words: Dave Mcleod

FORD'S JURASSIC EXPERIENCE THE NEW FORD RANGER RAPTOR Every now and again I manage to become fully immersed in a vehicle’s evolution, and my experience with Ford’s new Ranger Raptor is a perfect example. It began with the usual press awareness email, which certainly sparked interest—bearing in mind the attention its big brother (the F150 Raptor) has received. Then came the invite to the international unveiling in Thailand, a huge production that did more than whet the appetite (and began speculation about the 2L powertrain) but did not include a drive. This was followed by the silk sheet press unveiling in New Zealand (again no behind the wheel time) and the public ‘rotating plinth’ display at Fieldays—alas, still no keys were handed over, such torture. Anyway, a few weeks ago, I ﬁnally got the chance to get behind the wheel of this new breed of performance truck at a Jurassic event rather ﬁttingly, held in the wild and rugged outback of Australia's Northern Territory—it was well worth the wait. Ever since Ford announced that the Ranger Raptor’s heart would be a mere 2L, 4-cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine, the interweb has been a sea of visceral debate. But Ford has maintained that it’s not about the cubic capacity, and now I can happily inform you, they were correct. The engine itself delivers its 157kW and 500Nm of power and torque in a seemingly endless fashion and triple-digit speed comes with progressive ease whatever terrain you venture out on. Putting a 2L engine in a truck

may on the surface seem like a backward step, but you have to remember that it wasn’t that long ago that a V8 would be proud to boast these types of numbers. As I pointed out earlier, it’s not just about the CCs. With the Ranger Raptor, Ford’s engineers have mated the engine with a finely tuned 10-speed automatic gearbox that quite frankly never appears lost when finding correct gear, but although I doubt you’d need them, there are also paddles on hand for the control freaks amongst you. Underpinning it all, the Ranger Raptor’s heavy duty boxed chassis frame is stoic and unyielding but attached to this, are the other four cylinders that make this truck so very special, namely the Fox 2.5 internal Bypass front and remote reservoir rear shocks. According to Ford, "there is so much technology in them, they are a candy store for dynamic engineers". I won’t go into the specifics right now but the damping effect is similar to that of a soft closing cutlery drawer, they simply absorb whatever pressure is inflicted on them. Our ‘Outback Attack’ experience commenced in Darwin with a sealed road drive to Tipperary Station (which we all know is a long way), the perfect way to showcase the Ranger Raptor’s on-road prowess. Even with its larger physical dimensions and wider track the truck doesn’t feel ungainly on the tar seal. The sports seats are comfortable and supportive with side bolsters that I was thankful for later. A large array of infotainment and

driver aids (although no adaptive cruise control) are at hand and the BF Goodrich high-performance all-terrain tyres offered up very little road noise. The near two and a half hour drive included a 130km/h section that (from the engines point of view) went by unnoticed. The ‘driveway’ to the 210,000 hectare station itself was an unsurfaced, wide open trail, covered in red, aeolian dust that is commonly known as bulldust, in other words, Ranger Raptor territory. Once again, the combination of that torquey engine, strong chassis, outstanding suspension and all-terrain conquering rubber had us believing that we were still on the highway (and we drove accordingly). Tipperary Station was once home to around 2,000 exotic animals and its incredible isolation and extreme vastness immediately reminded me of the Jurassic Park trilogy (or is that a pentalogy?). Speaking of movies, I also discovered that the Adelaide River scene in Crocodile Dundee was ﬁlmed there, I digress. Anyway, with three exercises to complete, our hosts wasted no time in splitting us into groups and sending us into various locations. The ﬁrst of which for us, was the quarry and a chance to use the Raptor’s 4WD modes and upgraded ground clearances. As expected, the Ranger took to the gradients and loose shingle without breaking a sweat, unlike us as the temperature nudged the mercury past 30 degrees—this really is a capable off-roader.

Next up was the experience we’d all been waiting for, a fast-paced course including power slides, jumps and torturous ruts—time to engage Baja mode. Among other things, Baja mode tightens up steering response while loosening the rear end traction, the result is a wholly engaging drive that exorcises your inner demons. With a racing professional beside me to encourage and direct, the Raptor tore around Tipperary Station with extreme conﬁdence. I felt in control every step of the way, with the truck absorbing the brunt of all my misgivings. The third exercise was more of a demonstration than participation. A passenger ride in a six-minute hot lap that included air, speeds that exceeded 150km/h and display of tail wagging that would embarrass an excitable puppy, in short, it was a chance to get a real insight to the Ranger Raptors true performance capabilities. It was sublime. According to the drivers and technical team alike, the Raptor will take this punishment all day long and seldom miss a beat, to be honest, I strongly believe this to be the case. The long drive back to Darwin ‘civilisation’ was a bit of a comedown. The adrenaline ﬁlled outback experience was one to relish and savour. The Ranger Raptor is in a class of its own right now. What Ford has produced is a sheer delight to drive both in the town and out in the elements and from both an event and indeed the Raptor itself, it truly was a performance of Jurassic proportions. WEIGHT LOSS AND WAIT LESS JAGUAR F-TYPE P300 REVIEW NEW ZEALAND I’m a fine, fine one to talk, but for us humans, the health benefits of losing weight (or understanding your BMI) are numerous. Apparently, aside from its visual controversy when squeezed into speedos, carrying too much mass for your frame causes unnecessary stress on joints (oh, those poor knees), the respiratory system is compromised and the heart struggles to keep up. Of course, excess weight problems transverse all manner of genres. For instance, in the animal kingdom fat cats are not lazy boardroom dwellers, as feline predators, they learn very quickly that to staying lean aids survival, and, in the automotive world, shaving off 100lb (45kg) equals an extra 10 horsepower. So it would appear, that armed with this knowledge, Jaguar decided to drop 52kg from their F-Type and the P300 is the result.

The F-Type isn’t exactly famous for its luggage space (400L) but with this review, my P300 came with much less, as a space-saver (in this case an oxymoron) spare tyre took up residence in the rear—this would be instantly removed in my opinion.

The Jaguar F-Type has never struggled in the looks department, regardless of what it weighs. From the town and country to the beach or the track, its long nose, muscular coupe stance offers an ultra-desirable silhouette and thankfully, the new P300 hasn’t messed with this winning formula.

The new P300 F-TYPE comes with a 2L, four-cylinder ﬁnely tuned heart, oh and a twin-scroll turbocharger spinning on ceramic ball bearings to provide more immediate boost. The result is 300PS (221kW) and 400Nm of torque. It will propel you from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds and up to a licence-losing top speed of 249km/h. Yet it now offers a combined 7.2L/km efﬁciency and 163 g/km emissions.

My review vehicle came in Ultra Blue, it’s an eye-catching powder blue that forms an ideal canvas for the contrasting gloss-black and chrome highlights that come with the design pack and this R-Dynamic model. Huge integrated LED headlight eyes are underscored by signature daytime running lights, while the black grille and clamshell bonnet louvres garnish make for an attractive visage. The black theme continues with the fixed panoramic roof and privacy glass, and low profile rubber encases the 19-inch, seven split-spoke silver alloys. A whopping central exhaust tip features strongly at the rear, as does the fixed spoiler that’s attached to the remote-powered tailgate. Flush ‘deployable’ door handles gain you access to the F-Type’s cabin and you are greeted with leather, lots of it, made more so as the cockpit is rather snug in appearance. Sports seats, leather wheel, Delta Aluminium centre console and stitched dash present the upmarket effect you’d expect from a Jaguar and there was no scrimping in the infotainment department either, with phone and audio InControl apps, InControl Protect, Wi-Fi hotspot, Jaguar Satellite Navigation, a Meridian 380W sound system with 10 speakers, and reversing camera all presented on a 10inch touchscreen.

The P300 still has F-Type style and design, it’s still loaded with luxury and comfort and driver’s aids, so where is the weight-saving? I hear you ask. Well, aside from a few shavings here and there, it’s where it should be, under the bonnet, over the front axle, and the engine compartment. I can hear a slight groan, but don’t worry, Jaguar has thought of everything.

This is all well and good but it’s how this is all delivered that makes the real difference. The P300 is less nose heavy so it’s nimbler on its feet. Cornering when combined with the torque vectoring system, will have you hunting out the bends and curves as you substitute the ease of its eight-speed quickshift gearbox for the more involved and entertaining paddles to make the exhaust crackle and pop like a Kellogg's cereal. Although 'Comfort' and 'Eco' are available, ‘Dynamic’ driving mode selection is the go-to option because, quite frankly, you want to drive this car. The initial thoughts that 2L powertrain in a vehicle that should by rights be a V8 becomes a fading memory that disappears quickly in the rearview mirror. I have to admit, having driven the F-Type SVR on the track I’m a big fan, so much horsepower and so much intensity. The P300 offers up all the same style and finesse yet allows you the freedom to push that little harder on the open (real-world) road. Opening the exhaust baffles and revving high will always light my fire. Ask anyone that’s been to Jenny Craig, 52kg is a lot of weight to lose but with the P300 the benefits are clear and undisputed. HOLLYWOOD PRIME TIME TOYOTA PRIUS PRIME REVIEW

It seemed to me that when the Toyota Prius was launched around 20, yes, 20 years ago, it instantly became the darling of Hollywood. Justifiably I guess, almost every star was seen in one (or at least owned one) to underline their commitment to making the world a better place (and possibly) to appease their guilty conscience. Either way, it allowed them to sleep better in their glitzy and oversized cots (yes, I am jealous). Now, four generations later and in this case, the new secondgeneration plug-in hybrid Prius Prime, the stars seemed to be shining brightly for this fuel-efficient automotive benchmark. The Prius Prime was launched in 2012 and hasn’t really looked back since. It’s picked up many awards along the way and been heralded World Green Car in 2017 (the greeny car equivalent of an Oscar, I assume). With the latest rendition, Toyota has really upped the ante From a design point of view, the adoration of Prius Prime’s appearance will continue to be subjective. Some find it way too out there, others not far enough, but evidently, on the whole, it’s just right (judging by its popularity). However, aerodynamics has been the focus of its new ‘edgier’ look, quite literally, every side has been under the microscope (or wind tunnel) and virtually every angle has a purpose. Up front, an automatic grille shutter lowers resistance and shortens engine warm-up time, the underbody is covered smooth for swift airflow underneath, while there’s a ‘double bubble’ rear windscreen and aero stabiliser fins on the carbon fibre reinforced plastic tailgate. This all adds up to the Prius Prime slipping through the air with a drag coefficient of 0.25—that’s better than a baseball (0.3). The cabin has been given a spruce up, with a 7-inch infotainment screen and dual 4.2-inch instrument screens that deliver screeds of information. The rear passengers have been handed an extra lick of luxury with a central divider to hold lattes and rest weary arms. Then comes the really big innovations. The Prius Prime has a battery warming system that gets the 8.8kWh (double the previous one) lithium-ion nice and toasty and up to the optimum working temperature meaning that it can be charged in around four hours

from a household socket and type-2 cable. Then there’s the dual motor EV drive system, which through a raft of clever (and dull) technologies, increases the EV power offering better speed and acceleration while reducing engine start-up, equalling better overall efficiency. It also features a world-first gas injection heat pump AC. Essentially an air conditioning system that efficiently warms the cabin using heat absorbed by the outside air, so, like the batteries, you can be toasty too. As the Prius Prime sits on Toyota’s new TNGA (aka better chassis) platform, it now comes with all the driver and safety systems befitting such a forward-thinking vehicle. I won’t list them all here (neither of us has the time) but suffice to say your usefulness behind the wheel is getting less and less, it will even assist with your poor excuse that you call parking. What all the above leads to is a more advanced, more connected, more aerodynamic and more fuel-efficient vehicle. On battery alone, the Prius Prime will travel up to 63km and boasts a weighted fuel consumption number of 1L/100km and that’s impressive. However, being a hybrid, you don’t have to fixate on the battery life gauge, just congratulate yourself on the ‘eco score’ when you arrive at your destination—it rates you on things like acceleration and braking. During my review time with the Prius Prime, I snuck in a couple of longer runs and emptied all the charge from the batteries. There is a noticeable change in the vehicle's response when it shifts over fuel and funnily enough the, EV power was my preference, but even when free of electricity and intentionally driving ‘anti-eco’, the worst I could get the Prius Prime’s efficiency down to was 3.1L/100km! The Prius Prime really is a star in the Toyota range. They themselves are calling this a "$150 a year car", quoting Energywise’s estimate as to the Prius Prime’s annual running costs, and when you combine this with 22g/km CO2 plus an eight-year/160,000 hybrid battery warranty you can see why. I’m not sure if the Prius is still in vogue with the Hollywood elite but with its increased tech and ultra-low fuel usage, the Prius Prime certainly remains a bit of a darling. — Words: Dave McLeod

TRADING PLACES

Trader Steve Ruffley has nearly two decades’ experience in the finance industry, having worked on—and run—some of the largest and busiest trading floors in Europe, including London. Manchester-born Ruffley is a chief market strategist and head of education at InterTrader, a fund manager, mentor and author of The Ruff Guide To Trading. Now Ruffley’s ready to ply his trade Down Under, but he’s no get-rich-quick- scheme charlatan, and only those already with six-figure salaries need apply. Ruffley is also brutally honest. And, honestly, brutal. There’s a famous scene in The Sopranos where mob boss Tony Soprano throttles his feckless nephew and heir-apparent with the words, “You don’t gotta love me, but you will respect me,” and it’s reminiscent of the unapologetic attitude that Ruffley has to his work. "Some of his biggest trades, he admits, have been from negative events such as crashes and trading news following the London bombings. “People don’t like traders for that,” he says, “but it’s not political, it’s not personal. I’m just trading the news. It is, he shrugs, what it is." Ruffley, 38, moved to Auckland last year with his wife, from Jersey, and is currently building a house for his young familyto-be (their first child is due December) in Papamoa. He stresses his concerted efforts to contribute to the community by employing the likes of a local accountant, video director for his webinars, and website engineer. “When I tell people in New Zealand that I’m a hedge fund manager, the first thing they tell me is how much their house is worth, but so what?” he says. “Everyone here equates their wealth and worth with their house, but they won’t say how much money they earn. It’s like a status symbol. The housing market here will eventually go arse-up—as it will around the rest of the world. People who are all in it 'together' are ecstatic when prices are going up, if you're in the owning club, but not terrified of the possibility of them going down. Without a real correction in the house prices here, people have forgotten the pain any correction causes. I believe a lot of people will be wrong 'together'.” Ruffley highlights how wealth is all tied up with the baby boomers leaving few scraps for younger generations who are fast losing hope—and aspirations—of getting on the ladder. “The whole idea of building a long-term portfolio, including

property, is dying,” he says. “People aren’t investing for the future, they’re investing for the here and now. That’s why cryptocurrency blew up, everyone wanted a fast way of making money. Future generations just don’t think like the boomers because they won’t see the boom.” So, what’s the solution? “The stock markets. Diversify. When you’re talking about investing, you’re talking a minimum of ten years. When you’re talking about trading, which is the opposite, you’re talking instant. It’s a different mentality.” While everyone in London “has a rough idea what trading is”, Rufﬂey says he hasn’t met too many people in Aotearoa who do: “They understand investment and buying stocks and shares, but trading is a whole industry in of itself.” In a nutshell? “It’s being involved in the markets when they open, taking a position based on fundamental and technical factors to achieve something there and then. It can be a minute, it can be an hour. You’re investing in the movement or the direction of the market and being involved in its liquidity. It’s tough to explain unless you’ve done it. I’ve seen people make hundreds of thousands of pounds in minutes. That’s what’s available. You can’t do that with investing, you have to give it time. Whereas trading, by its very nature, is instant reward.” And addictive? “Highly addictive. Once you’ve been a trader, why would you do anything else? The rewards are huge sums of money. It’s like being an intelligent footballer. And there are no real rules. Everything is down to you.” So, the industry hasn’t changed much since the ﬁnancial crisis? “Not really. Crashes are good. I earn money from crashes. When a stock market crashes, correction comes. People lose money, but people will be making money as well. I can’t control that. Things crash because of fear and they go up because of greed.”

Technically, Ruffley’s not selling anything. Not to his clients at least. Though there might be a charge for his software (“developed with some clever guys in California that takes care of 80% of trading”), like a mortgage broker, he takes a cut of the profits from the businesses’ sides. Ruffley’s service is that of a mentor to “build a framework that people wouldn’t otherwise know how to put in place”. There’s a big psychological slant, too. “Think about what the average person earns in New Zealand—say, $80,000. Well, could you handle losing that in a day? Some people couldn’t. I know when to enter the market, and when to get out. I can make people better traders in a matter of months. I just know more about it than most people, it’s as simple as that. But people must also be aware that it’s high-risk, so a big part of my job is to manage expectations.” At the expense of friends and a romantic life, for much of his early career, Ruffley dedicated every waking hour to the trading floor. “That’s all I wanted to do,” he says. “It was a very lonely existence and it took me a very long time to get out of that mentality and reintegrate into the world.” Such experience, he believes, is beneficial to his clients.

“Because trading is so addictive, you have to control that lifestyle aspect. You have to make the markets come to you. I haven’t worked any more than 10 hours a week for a decade That’s what being rich is, not just having money in the bank, but having the time to spend it. It’s something I’ve dedicated my whole life to and I don’ take it lightly. You can trade for an hour a day and in a week earn more than the average person earns all year.” But Rufﬂey’s not here for the average person: “If you want to make money with me then you already have to have some— and be able to afford to lose some, too. However, all the guys I mentor are proﬁtable overall. This is my punt to say to New Zealand if you want to learn how to trade, how to make some serious money, then I’m here. I ask Ruffley about ethical trading opportunities, but he dismisses it as nigh-on fantasy: “I’m a mercenary. I’m out there to be in the markets, to find as much value as I can in as little time as I can. I’m not interested in the backstory. You can’t ethically day trade. You can ethically invest, I guess. You can find out who doesn’t use child labour or whatever, but at the end of the day, they’re all as bent as each other. What’s ethical in business? I’m more of a cynic. I know how the world works, so I’m not selling that kind of stuff.”

What about the current warnings of further global economic instability? “Things go up and things go down. It’s cyclical. I think what’s arrogant is that central banks around the globe think they can stop a crash. Recessions are engineered, they happen to pay down government debts. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but what do you think happens when people think that the markets are going to correct? They get out, and they pay tax on it and that all goes to the government. So, when they all do it at the same time, that’s a very signiﬁcant windfall."

Typically, animals with a flea burden or flea allergy will scratch or have some fur loss on their lower back, just below the base of the tail. With Auckland’s temperate climate, fleas and ticks can live in our environment throughout the year and a regular flea/tick regime coupled with a good worming schedule is the best way to keep those suckers at bay.

What’s the best way to keep our pets comfortable in spring? The answer is prevention. Sticking to a ﬁrm ﬂea and worm schedule is an easy one to do at home and if you already have a veterinary prescribed plan, continue to maintain that. Make sure the bedding area is washed regularly to remove any dust and allergens, and a good wipe down after walks through the park is also a good idea.

THE DREADED MOULD WINTER BLUES

We’ve been having a debate about free speech in recent weeks, which is a good thing. We sometimes take the pillars of a successful free country in which we live for granted. From time-to-time, it’s important to reassert them.

What a gloomy start, it is a grey, wet and cold day as I write this. But all is not as bad as it seems as amongst all the gloom there is a magniﬁcent pink blossom tree in full bloom outside my window. A promise of spring to come!

The debate was sparked by Jan Thomas, Massey University’s vice-chancellor, cancelling Don Brash’s speaking engagement at the university.

But that is not all that she said. “Mr Brash’s leadership of Hobson’s Pledge and views he and its supporters espoused in relation to Māori wards on councils was clearly of concern to many staff, particularly Māori staff. Whether those views would have been repeated to students in the context of a discussion about the National Party may seem unlikely, but I have no way of knowing. In my opinion the views expressed by members of Hobson’s Pledge come dangerously close to hate speech. They are certainly not conducive with the University’s strategy of recognising the values of a Tiriti o Waitangi-led organisation.” This is what caused the outcry. The clear implication was that Mr Brash’s views were not welcome on campus. Apparently, it’s a heinous crime not to agree with creating Maori wards on councils. It is not an unreasonable conclusion to draw that Jan Thomas’s health and safety concerns, or ready acquiesce to the 'thug’s veto', were a convenient ﬁg leaf to cover her primary motivation. The incident struck a chord because there is a suspicion that universities are in danger of becoming intolerant places, where people are all expected to accept certain propositions. Reconciling the conﬂicting desires amongst the student body is tricky. But the broader challenge for the university sector is to preserve and promote genuine diversity of thinking within the universities and to create an atmosphere which is safe to challenge the dominant prejudices of the times.

Tenants will also be complaining if there is no insulation and can report the landlords, so do not wait any longer—bite the bullet and get the insulation sorted. Well after that is there any good news? Yes, there is always light at the end of the tunnel and you will have happier, healthy tenants and they will stay longer. Mould and weeping windows, they happen every year at this time. Mouldy curtains are another problem, it will not wash off and a lot of the curtains supplied in rentals have the thermal backing which is not washable and peels off, so they have to be replaced which is expensive. But with insulation this will not happen. Went to an inspection yesterday the home felt really cold and there was so much mould on the net curtains, along with moisture. This was my ﬁrst inspection and the tenants had been there for three months. There were frames and sills covered in mould, so I shall get a professional in to clean all the window frames and will have to replace nets. Again, tenants don’t leave windows open to ventilate so we shall place the security stays on and hopefully the owner will have insulation in soon. He is currently getting quotes. Next month we should have a brighter outlook. Have just come back from Waiheke. It’s such a nice place to relax and recharge the batteries. There is a lot going on at Just Rentals: rent arrears to follow up, inspections to be done, maintenance to organise, booking insulation quotes, arranging viewing of properties, showing properties, and replying to the many emails we receive daily. It certainly keeps us busy, but this is what we do, and we do it well. Keep warm. Happy Renting,

That was bad enough, because she was applying 'a thug’s veto' to free speech on campus. It doesn’t take much imagination to realise that if all it takes to cancel an event is for someone to threaten violence, then free speech is on very thin ground indeed. We look to our universities to be defenders of free speech—to cave in at the ﬁrst sign of trouble is no glorious defence.

At one level she pointed to health and safety concerns, cancelling it because she believed there was a signiﬁcant risk of harm to participants, because some threats had been made on social media.

I mentioned the insulation in last month’s column, but it is so important that landlords are aware of the ﬁnes that they will have to pay if not done. Also, property managers can also be ﬁned up to $4,000 for each non-compliant home, and these are often awarded to the tenant. Tenancy Services from 1 July 2019 will be investigating rental properties which do not meet the legal requirements and are ready to hold any landlords and property managers to account for non-compliance.
