They say nothing lasts forever. While the OCR continues to firm (up another 0.5% this week), there is now thinking that this rate will likely top out at around 3.5-4%, which in turn could see mortgage rate levels at around 5.5- 6% or less. We note several banks now at sub 5% for a year and also observe falls in the 5 year rate. In short, timing for buyers has never been better. We know that on the back of high employment, demand is actually firm.

In summary, the ‘willing buyer, willing seller’ dynamic is coming down to the careful management of moments in time.

jo@uprealestate.co.nz107

The other phenomenon is current vendors overlooking perfectly acceptable offers, their thinking often based on historic expectations, only to circle back wanting to accept – but finding that the buyer has moved on.

The Man from Uncle Now well into my 15th year since leaving the UK – and 11th in Aotearoa New Zealand – there have been a handful of times that I’ve missed (the British) Mother’s Day, not out of indifference or forgetfulness, but because, confusingly, the date differs across countries. Coming from a single-parent home, Father’s Day, however, has never been too much of an issue (that date differs across borders, too, by the way).

Guest Editor’s Note Up Front

Jamie Christian Desplaces

During a recent heart-to-heart with the partner of my sister-in-law-to-be, he lamented how he’d never be a proper uncle, by blood, as he, like me, is an only child. I told him how, growing up, an uncle-in-law of mine was one of the most important people in my life – and remains so, even though we no longer keep in touch anywhere near as much as we should do. For us ‘adopted nephews’ (and ‘nieces’) decide who our proper uncles are not by the blood that runs through their veins but the bonds that they choose to build with us even though they’re by no means obliged to do so. So, to all the good blokes out there, happy Father’s Day. And to all those lucky enough to have a cool ‘uncle’ in their lives, don’t forget to let them know how much they rock. Enjoy the issue. Titled Spring Clean, the beautifully illustrated anthology sees the young Muslim author transition through a season of her life as a 15- and 16-yearold during which she suffered severe bullying. These dark days are followed by a period of healing and internal growth.

The book also explores the psychology of abuse and why people can’t just ‘leave’ in many such situations. Sabreen says this is an issue that needs deconstructing so that others can understand just how trapped a person can feel in abusive Forsituations.Sabreen, writing poetry is cathartic and Spring Clean helped her to process the struggles she experienced. “I didn’t intend to share the collection when I was writing it, but I started showing it to people over the years. I showed it to my dad and my English teacher, and a lot of people encouraged me to put it out there. It’s always scary being vulnerable, but a year or so after I wrote it, I thought yes, it would be great if I could help others by sharing.”

Illustrated by artist Alice Waldow, who also designed the cover, Sabreen’s poems detail love and loss, breaking and healing, winter and spring.

Entertainer’s Delight

The inside kitchen is for Bonnie to prepare meals; the adjacent outdoor kitchen is for Gavin to cook his barbecue feasts, and their young brood can access the pantry and small appliance garage without interfering with the prep, cooking, or cleaning areas.

Oak veneer cabinetry gives the indoor kitchen a sense of luxury, texture and warmth, whilst the Dekton Lunar benchtop delivers a practical, durable surface and keeps the palette light. Dekton Bromo was used for the fronts for the overhead cupboards, which are continued to the outside kitchen for connectivity – and durability.

The sculptural raised leaner in beautiful Arabescato Orobico Grigio marble delivers the wow factor. This stunning feature complements the kitchen tones and adds that 'special' element to the kitchen for friends and family to gather around whilst entertaining. LED lighting under the leaner and adjacent areas provides a softness at night and illuminates the entertainment area.

If you're looking for a new kitchen, pop into Kitchens By Design's showroom, located at 3 Byron Ave in Takapuna, or call one of its designers on (09) 379 3084. For inspiration, take a look at some fabulous projects at kitchensbydesign.co.nz Home & Design

Well, whatever is on your wish list, the chances are they are all in this beautiful example by Kitchens By Design. Full outdoor kitchen-barbecue? Tick! Bar leaner to hang out at with your mates? Tick! Enough entertaining space and storage to cater for multiple families? Tick! Great connection to the interiors and the outdoors? Tick! Bombproof materials? Tick! Stylish design? Tick! Our clients, Bonnie and Gavin, asked for all of the above and more. Designed by our in-house designer, Jane Fergusson, a platinum designer of the NKBA, this kitchen is located in a modern home on the Pauanui Waterways. The clever design incorporates two kitchens side by side. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors divide the two workspaces but, when opened up, provide an extended kitchen space that connects both areas into one large, entertainers' delight.

How about the set-up and control?

You speak from experience? Yes, it brings me so much joy to tell Yiko what to do! Even during a bad day, it’s one thing I can control. And since I got my dog, I appreciate it even more. The products change the life of everybody, but especially for people with pets and kids. They improve your wellbeing and give you a sense of calm, knowing that you have a clean home. Apart from its functionalities, the design of the X1 is outstanding. Why did you collaborate with the renowned European design house Jacob Jensen? We were very aware that design is incredibly important on a global level, including in New Zealand. According to our research, around 50% of people won’t buy a product, no matter how good it is, if they don’t like the look of it. With Jacob Jensen, you can’t go wrong, they’ve taken the design to the next level.

What makes the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 PLUS special?

What else can consumers expect from the DEEBOT X1 PLUS ?

Can you tell us more about its mopping function?

Set and forget. It's all you need to do!

The segment is all about the notion that you are not cleaning. You don’t have to think about it. All you need do is set and forget. It’s one chore that’s off your plate.

What about the cleaned-up debris and dust?

Its 5,000pa suction is up at the top level. Your carpet will look so beautiful it will be as if a professional cleaner has been around! The machine has two little side brushes which pick up bits and pieces, and a main floating brush that catches all the dirt and debris, even when the floor is uneven.

In the charging box there’s an auto empty station. So, it goes back and puts all the dust and debris from the dust bin into the dust bag. The dust bag holds 60 days’ worth of debris for an average-sized home before it needs to be changed. You don’t have to clean or touch it because the bag closes itself and notifies you when it needs changing. It’s also safe for those with allergies.

According to ECOVACS ROBOTICS up to 80% of Kiwis aspire to own a robot vacuum. ECOVACS is one of the world’s most innovative companies of their kind; their newest product, the ECOVACS DEEBOT X1 PLUS , is more than just a robot vacuum. It’s a smart multiple cleaning device. Karen Powell, regional director, Ecovacs Australia and New Zealand, ECOVACS, tells Verve more. Why are robot vacuums trending?

How does the DEEBOT X1 PLUS recognise the sofa and avoid objects? Through obstacle avoidance technology powered by artificial intelligence with visual interpretation. It knows more than 18 types of objects and, once it recognises something is in front of it, works to move around it. Furthermore, once these objects are removed from the floor, you can send the DEEBOT back to clean the areas it couldn't before. It’s similar technology to self-driving cars. It also knows it can get close to big objects but avoid smaller things like Lego pieces so as not to suck them up.

On the back is the OZMO™ Pro 3.0 Oscillating Mopping System which vibrates up to 600 times a minute. As the Deebot passes over, it identifies stains and seeps out just enough water to effectively clean and remove them. The floor does not get soaked, just wet enough for a really good mop that picks up 99% of bacteria. It also cleans the mop itself and refills the water in the tank.

It’s incredibly smart, with the ability to get to know your home thanks to mapping functionality that’s so efficient it won’t clean the same area twice. It also creates 3D-maps so you can customise how it cleans – if you want it to clean under the sofa, it will.

You download our app which is incredibly easy to navigate – it’s a very simple one-step process to connect to your network. Then the device is ready to run. You can control it through the map on the phone and we’ve also added a sound recognition intelligence – a voice assistant called Yiko that recognises 40 different commands. If you drop something, say, “Yiko come here,” and it will find you! Once you’ve experienced that kind of convenience, you can never go back.

A striking glass home in Johannesburg, has found new purpose as the studio and heart of Lezanne Viviers’s fashion brand.

29 September 2022

An industrial tower-like structure, made from recycled shipping containers, stands proudly across from the studio’s main entrance. It's a sharp contrast to the surrounding stone walls and green foliage. The three containers act as storage space and an additional guest bathroom for clients. In contrast, the building is all hard lines, metal, and glass glistening like a jewel in the warm Johannesburg light.

Entering the sloped property, the first view as you make your way down a steel staircase is of a vivid yet carefully curated garden. Black anthracite frames the circular pond and an unusual mix of hardy succulents, tropical lotus, and pansies.

A lack of space at her previous studio meant that it was time for Lezanne Viviers, the fashion designer and founder of creative brand VIVIERS, to up-size and look for a new working space. What she found was a striking studio aptly called the 'Glasshouse'.

Home & Design 30

“I wanted the palette to be a little softer and more neutral, to simplify what you saw around you, both inside and in the garden,” says Lezanne.

The artwork uKhahlamba- Drakensberg by James Barry (pictured right) and three garments are displayed in a doorway. Much like the studio’s large glass windows, the dresses allow sunlight to filter through their translucent fabric. Lezanne is not afraid to utilise deadstock synthetic or plastic-based textiles, but unlike in fast-fashion, where they are used to make fake silks and other replica fabrics, she believes they must be celebrated and shown for what they are.

The interior of the shipping container is brought to life through an injection of colour and pattern. This includes a splash of salmon pink paint, the rippled texture of the corrugated iron structure, and reflective surfaces. A pair of ink black basins sit atop smooth concrete stormwater pipes.

A small collection of ferns and leafy plants hangs in the studio window, bringing nature and colour indoors. Beside them a sculptural dress mimics their organic shapes and green hues.

The silhouettes and architectural lines of clothes are an integral part of Lezanne’s work. “The shape of a garment is important and can conceal or reveal a body shape. I am personally more interested in transforming because I love sculpture,” she explains.

Through the heart of the building, the magic of the VIVIERS studio comes to life. Dappled sunlight filters through the glass windows and reflects off the ebony floor, as the brand’s latest collection, MOTHERBOARD, fills the area. Lezanne cuts a fine figure in cobalt blue as she moves through her workspace.

Home & Design 32

“I really try to get the best quality raw materials. I love textural things, reflective surfaces and fabric that is handmade,” says Lezanne.

Lezanne believes, “Clothes must make you feel good and comfortable and happy and ultimately last. I love the way clothes transform someone, their personality and the way that they act - even if it’s just on that day.”

Organic shapes and luxurious textures create a welcoming environment for VIVIERS clients. A soft white boucle lounge suite offers a great spot for clients to relax. A gold curtain demarcates the changing room with its flamingo pink armchair and vintage art deco glass light fitting.

Much of the studio’s retro furniture was sourced from antique shops around South Africa. Case in point, the vintage glass dining room table, which reflects the surrounding meeting room. The garden and a glimpse of Johannesburg are visible beyond.

Home & Design 36

The scale and beauty of the Glasshouse is obvious from the lower terrace of the garden. The metal and glass structure sits contentedly between the succulent garden and Johannesburg sky. Colour and detail are brought to the luminous box of a structure by dashes of colourful vinyl. Blue and gold vinyl cast their shadows across the glossy black floors.

Putting on a FaceBrave

I like to think (and I hope my friends and colleagues at least somewhat agree) that I have a bright, sunny disposition.

The first thing I noticed when trialling HeadRest was the herbal taste: it’s strong. That’s because the dose is concentrated and powerful – and it works. HeadRest is formulated with passionflower to calm the mind and chamomile for a sedative effect. Mind still whirring, I tucked myself into bed and within 10 minutes of taking HeadRest my physical body had noticeably relaxed, my shoulders dropping away from my ears. My thoughts were hovering around but much quieter, a sense of fluidity replacing the nagging worries and ‘what ifs’. I slept deeply for the first time in a long while, waking without an alarm in the morning and feeling ready to tackle the LiveCalmday. is BraveFace’s answer to sustaining a long-term sense of everyday calm. I’m not usually one for taking daily stress relief supplements for fear that I’ll get into a dependency mindset, however all BraveFace products are completely natural and exclude any ingredients that may become addictive. Taking LiveCalm twice a day has, for me, become more like a shield – I think of it like a daily vitamin for its overall effects rather than something I need. Formulated with adaptogenic herbs ashwagandha, holy basil and rosemary, LiveCalm soothes the nervous system, restoring long term day-to-day balance. Again, the biggest difference for me is in the quality of my thoughts. Unnecessary worry no longer takes up free rent in my headspace meaning I’m able to focus on the task in front of CoolHeadme.is all in the name –helping you to keep a cool and clear head in those times of heightened challenge, perhaps a job interview or a presentation. CoolHead has been a game changer for me when things don’t quite work out as planned and I need to quickly navigate unexpected change or solve a problem. A pocket-sized sanity saver, CoolHead is formulated with passionflower and mānuka honey to restore calm before worry starts to Ifescalate.there’s one thing I’ve learnt from BraveFace, it’s that facing anxiety and stress doesn’t mean giving up. It means equipping ourselves with the tools to productively manage situations and our responses. BraveFace has helped me put anxiety back in its lamp, letting me be my lightest, best self. BraveFace is available at braveface.com , Farro, and selected pharmacies. Use VERVE10, for 10% off online.

ASHLEEWORDS LALA 39 September 2022

I like to laugh a lot, I’m strong and confident, and have a positive outlook on Thislife.doesn’t mean that I don’t get stressed and anxious. I do. A lot. For me, the biggest challenge is the ‘monkey mind’, that continuous jumping from one unrelated thought to another, often plagued by ‘what ifs’. Digital distraction makes it challenging to focus on one task for a sustained period of time. Sleep feels elusive. (As an aside, I turned 30 earlier this year and admit that I’m also kept awake by the classic “am I where I should be in life” train of thought.)

This ongoing cycle of stress, anxiety and sleep deprivation can deeply affect day-to-day quality of life. Which is why BraveFace have come up with a smart, convenient and natural trio of remedies (LiveCalm, CoolHead and HeadRest) designed to tackle stress from every angle – acute, sleep and long term.

Our beauty and wellness editor trials and reviews BraveFace, a herbal supplement range for stress and worry.

Stacey O is a holistic sexuality mentor and host of Finger Food, a podcast centred around sexuality, pleasure, and identity. Verve called in to find out more.

Hand Skills

“The podcast blossomed from a shoot I did with photographer Rob Tennent late last year. Being in and out of lockdowns, I needed an escape from the monotony and had the idea to create a beautiful shoot around sensuality and pleasure. I asked Rob to be involved and to my delight, he was keen and invited some of his young, inspiring, liberated friends along to take part and model.”

Beauty & Health 40

Intrigued by “all the glorious humans that showed up” Stacey was compelled to find out more about their lives and asked Rob and the gang if they’d be keen to sit down and “Suddenlychat.wefound ourselves in a recording studio, cup of tea in hand, sharing stories about sexuality, identity –the most spontaneous, organic, unfolding of a podcast that ever lived!”

Have there been standout stories so far?

What have you learned about yourself? “It has bought awareness to the fact that I’ve been learning about sexuality from a very narrow lens. It’s important to connect with people outside of your inner circle as it gives you a broader perspective on life and helps generate more empathy, connection and understanding.” It must be an immense privilege to have guests share such intimate details, but no doubt a sometimesuncomfortable experience too? “It’s such a deep honour and privilege to hold space for these individuals as they open up and share so vulnerably, and there have been many moments of discomfort. I often don’t know what to say because I could never possibly understand their experiences which have been completely different to my own. At times it has felt very uncomfortable to just listen, remain curious, and digest what my guests are saying as opposed to trying to relate, make it about me or interject.”

Aucklander Stacey O’Gorman first found fame as the founder of baking business Meringue Girls in London, her tempting creations stocked in stores like Harrods and Selfridges and firm favourites of fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Stella McCartney, and Jimmy Choo. A couple of cookbooks – and plenty of encounters with celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver and Rick Stein – later, Stacey decided her life needed a change of direction. With her health deteriorating and burnout looming, it was time to take stock. Following an intensely self-reflective period of travel, yoga, therapy – and a divorce – Stacey felt compelled to work as a women’s wellbeing mentor and “Theeducator.approach of a holistic sexuality mentor incorporates both neuroscience and eastern tradition like tantra and Taoism,” she says. “It’s designed to go beyond talking and deep into the body, to shift stagnant energy and lift thousands of years of conditioning to release pain and trauma and unleash mind-blowing pleasure. It’s about working with people's sexual problems and desires from a holistic lens, to treat the entire ‘being’ rather than isolating the issues.” We all, she adds, exist because of the act of sex, yet there is still so much shame around it. I ask if she feels society is getting better at talking about it.

“Honestly, I’ve been super blown away by everyone’s stories so far. I’ve learned so much from these individuals and their vulnerability. I loved Ash’s stories around stripping and how liberating that has been for her. I loved Batanai’s journey with self-pleasure and body acceptance and was deeply touched by Maddox’s journey around transitioning at school, relating, and transphobia. It’s fascinating finding the common threads between each of the podcasts, which basically boil down to love thyself and be unapologetically you!”

Sex, adds Stacey, is also key to mental “It’shealthiness.proventhat orgasms activate endorphins, which expel cortisol, which can relieve stress, supporting our overall health and wellbeing. Scientists now speculate that a state of high sexual arousal can even aid in managing generalised anxiety. Basically, get your sex on people, with yourself or others!”

“Yes, and I think the internet has played a huge role in that. We’re seeing activism explode on social media, inspiring us to take action in our own circles and communities. We can access information and support we couldn’t before, and there are more platforms for us to share our stories and support one another. The fact that we can watch shows on Netflix like Sex, Love and Goop, The Principles of Pleasure, and Sex Education encourages me that sex-positive messages are swimming closer into the mainstream. There’s a hunger for a revised and evolved exploration into sexuality, and it’s being fed.” What are some essential requirements of a good sex life? “Commitment: the commitment to carving out the space and time to experience pleasure with yourself or your lover, or lovers. Connection: whether it be foreplay via text, going on a hot date, or being intimate at home – make time for it. Connect with a deep sense of presence and playfulness. Communication is also vital, and so underrated, and in my opinion the most important piece when it comes to having good sex. Share your fears, desires, and boundaries. It helps us feel safer which relaxes the nervous system and in turn helps us experience far more orgasmic pleasure than we thought possible.”

A New Approach for Pelvic Floor Health

“We know that at least 50% of women do not feel comfortable talking to their doctor about urinary incontinence,” says Laura. “So the team at JUNOFEM recognised the need for a solution women can trust that was effective and easy to use –femfit® is part of that solution.”

There had never been a wearable device that could measure different pressure profiles during activities before. “We worked with a lot of clinical leaders who drove the research and we had a lot of guidance from key opinion leaders in the clinical space,” says Laura. 43 September 2022

While the statistics for urinary incontinence are high, perhaps the most disturbing element is that most people prefer to sweep it under the carpet. However, while urinary incontinence is a distressing condition for those who experience it, for most women, it can be managed effectively.

What is femfit®? femfit® is a biofeedback device. It’s slim, soft and flexible and designed to be worn inside the vagina. Made up of eight pressure sensors, encapsulated in biocompatible silicon, femfit® connects to an interactive app which guides women on effective pelvic floor muscle activation. In addition, it takes them through a pelvic floor muscle strength training programme via a fun and interactive app. “Once in place, your muscles will move in a natural way without obstruction,” says Laura.

“It’s very common but it’s not normal,” says Laura Pedofsky, who joined JUNOFEM and femfit® after researching femfit® for her PhD in bioengineering. “And it’s important to know that you can do something about it.”

“Jenny, the CEO and co-founder of JUNOFEM has a background in nursing and obstetrics so she understood the clinical need,” says Laura.

Find your way to a healthier, stronger pelvic floor with femfit® by JUNOFEM.

Introducing JUNOFEM and the femfit® pelvic floor muscle training system. They provide a circle of care combined with state-of-the-technology to help the one-in-three women who experience urinary incontinence.

Clinical research Led by Dr Jenny Kruger, The Pelvic Floor Research group at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, University of Auckland was originally looking at developing instrumentation to measure intraabdominal pressure during activities after surgery for pelvic organ prolapse. “It’s key to keep abdominal pressure low when you’re returning to exercise,” says Laura. “Then the idea of a vaginal pressure profile came about and femfit® snowballed out of that.”

One in three women suffer from pelvic floor disorders. But with the right treatment, up to 80% of symptoms can be resolved.

JUNOFEM’S solution comes complete with a 12-week training programme that’s been tested in a randomised control trial.

The JUNOFEM experience Laura stresses that the JUNOFEM experience isn’t just about buying a device and going on your way.

The clinically validated training programme

“Many women need pelvic floor strengthening help,” says Laura. “We know that up to 30% of women cannot tighten their pelvic floor on verbal instruction. femfit®’s visual biofeedback through the app lets you know whether you’re activating the correct muscles. That’s the beauty of the vaginal pressure profile.”

“JUNOFEM offers wraparound specialist support. Our pelvic floor physios will work with you if you need a little bit of extra support,” she says. “We want to be on this journey to pelvic floor health with you.”

3. Low pressure near the vagina entrance.

There are three pressure zones along the length of the vagina:

Beauty & Health 44

Indeed, femfit® is backed by 10 years of academic research.

“We know this programme works for women with incontinence,” says Laura. “Following this programme ensures women exercise at the right intensity and femfit® helps their technique.”

1. Abdominal pressure is at the top of the vagina near the cervix.

To that end, when making a purchase you’ll be asked to fill out a symptom survey. “While lots of women experience pelvic floor muscle dysfunction not everyone would benefit from a strengthening tool,” says Laura. “So, we want to ensure JUNOFEM and femfit® is right for you.” femfit® is also available through referrals if a specialist physiotherapist thinks it will be beneficial for you. Ten years from concept to creation, femfit® is researched in New Zealand, designed in New Zealand and made in New Zealand. femfit® is available from junofem.com

“Researchers were interested to see how pressure could be changed along the vagina during various activities,” says Laura. “There’s always been interest in what exercises are safe post-partum so we had some research groups using femfit® in activities. Both during pelvic floor muscle activation and also post-partum during different movements.”

The programme gives real-time feedback via the app to improve technique and effectiveness, caters to all levels and takes eight to 16 minutes five times a week.

2. The middle is the high-pressure zone (if you effectively contract your pelvic floor this is where strengthening occurs).

“Growing up, I never had the vision or perception that I would sculpt my own look to be that of Pamela Anderson,” says the actress. “I mean, for a good two decades she was a fantasy figure for both men and women the world over, but not someone I ever thought I would be trying to emulate, so it was strange to really want to mould myself into this entity!

“I am going to carry on giving everything I can to the projects I’m working on. Certainly, I’m finding out more about myself as well as the people I portray, and that’s really important.”

45 September 2022

The eight-part series tells the story of how two stars from very opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum – she, the beach-bodied Baywatch star; he, the excess-strewn Motley Crew drummer – made waves and headlines in the ‘90s.

From Downton to Pamela Anderson

.

Lily, who names Cate Blanchett, Dame Maggie Smith, Gary Oldman, and Kristin Scott Thomas as the most inspirational people she has worked with, remains philosophical about a body of work that continues to move her forward in its demands.

The evolution of actress Lily James

In terms of career transformations, Lily James has been through many. From her early period dramas like Downton Abbey and The Darkest Hour, to musical interventions like Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, and punchy, action-led dramas like Baby Driver and Rebecca , not to mention comedies and romance flicks including Yesterday and Rare Beasts. A genre that the 33-year-old British actress was yet to truly explore was the biopic, but that’s now changed thanks to her starring turn as Pamela Anderson in the Disney+ series Pam & Tommy.

The role represents another significant forward step for an actress whose award roster fails to reflect the veracity and versatility with which she has approached her craft. “I keep going, looking towards the next job, the next job, the challenges that come with it, and I sort of break those challenges down into smaller ones, mini ones and take it step by step, day by day,” she says. “I know I’ve been lucky, and although I’ve become a little more assured over time, I still fear it may all disappear.”

“The physical aspect was obviously the most demanding. It was a huge task each time we got on set to turn myself into her, and the makeup department did an incredible job.”

WellbeingWorkplace

When it comes to looking after mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, Kate Figgins and Lindsey Rayner of HumanEx are two women you want in your corner. Mental illness is a growing global crisis.

MILLYWORDSNOLAN

“People are inundated with information, workloads and responsibilities far greater than generations before us,” says Kate. “We’re all constantly multi-tasking and that’s very difficult to sustain for long periods of time. Social media also creates a sense of ‘trying to keep up with the Joneses’, which is very stressful.”

Kate LindseyFigginsRayner

Kate and Lindsey believe people are feeling overwhelmed more than ever. Social media and the rate technology is developing is a large cause of this, along with information overload and, of course, the effect of the recent pandemic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Burden of Disease study estimate that almost 800,000 people die from suicide every year. That’s one person every 40 seconds. And these statistics are pre-Covid, so one can only assume that they’re higher now. In New Zealand, The Health Promotion Agency (HPA) estimates that one in five people will suffer from medium to high levels of mental distress – a statistic that’s trending upwards. These frightening patterns are the driving force behind Kate and Lindsey’s desire to change the landscape in New Zealand around the issue of mental health. Two years ago, the dynamic duo founded HumanEx with the goal to make sure people feel safe, comfortable, confident, and happy in the workplace – whether in small or medium sized businesses, large corporates, or non“Weprofits.want everyone in life to find their baseline of happiness,” says Lindsey. To do this, the pair started educating people within the workplace through workshops and courses to improve people’s knowledge and literacy around mental health and wellbeing, while also teaching them practical skills concerning looking after themselves and supporting others. “Education within the workplace will hopefully infiltrate into the community and people’s homes through conversations around the dinner table and the like,” adds Lindsey.

There’s also no longer a clear demarcation between our personal and work lives, especially with working from home. “We can no longer expect people to compartmentalise their work and personal lives,” says Kate. “I’m not saying people should spend the whole day at work talking about their problems, but boundaries need to be set to enable

The aim is to create a culture where employees feel confident and comfortable having a voice, to disagree if necessary and bring their whole self to the workplace.

The New Zealand Institute of Economic Research recently released data around the difference between crisis and post-crisis interventions and early intervention programmes around mental health. It was discovered that services like EAP (employee assistance programmes) counselling give a threeto-one return while in the early intervention space, which HumanEx operates in, the return was as high as 12-to-one.

we’re so passionate about educating and empowering people with the right tools and skills, so that we can reduce the time people spend feeling unhappy,” says Lindsey.

“We hope that in years to come, just as workplace physical first aiders are mandatory, mental health first aiders will be too,” says Kate. “It’s frightening that people can easily ring their boss and say they need a sick day for a physical ailment, but can’t bring themselves to admit feeling burnt out, struggling emotionally, or just in need of some time to themselves.”

“That’s the stigma that we need to shift,” adds Lindsay. “We want the term ‘sick day’ to apply to any reason you may need to feel better to be happy and productive in the workplace – and life in general.”

“We’re trying to teach people the signs and symptoms of mental health struggles. The sooner you can make changes, the sooner you’ll get back to your baseline mental wellness,” says Lindsey.

For most people this doesn’t always come naturally.”

HumanEx operates around prevention and intervention, rather than being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. They’re not about putting fruit bowls into workplaces or handing out gym membership but taking a deeper dive into what’s happening within organisations. They look at the administrative and strategic side of an organisation and work out what policies and processes they have in place for their employees’ mental health and wellbeing, and their job designs and workloads. “Creating psychological safety in the workplace must come from the top,” says Lindsey. “You can’t expect people in your organisation to be vulnerable if leaders aren’t being so. This means bosses must have real candour, setting an example by having bold and brave conversations with employees.”

Out of the 15 programmes that HumanEx offers organisations, one of the most fundamental is the two-day Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course. The internationally-acclaimed, evidencebased training programme empowers and equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support coworkers, friends or family members experiencing mental health problems. As an accredited provider of the MHFA New Zealand curriculum, HumanEx’s mission is to have a trained and certified mental health first aider in every organisation in New Zealand. “By 2030, our focus is to get 400,000 people in New Zealand trained in mental health first aid in the workplace,” says Kate. “The idea being that people will then also take the skills HumanExhome.”also offers this course to the public. Kate and Lindsey aim to help break down the stigma currently surrounding the words ‘mental health’ to ensure parity between physical first aid and mental first aid in the workplace.

Mental Health Awareness week is 26 September – 2 October. HumanEx will donate $30 to Movember for every person who books a HumanEX course in September or October. Visit humanex.co.nz

The aim is to create a culture where employees feel confident and comfortable having a voice, to disagree if necessary and bring their whole self to the workplace.

It’s common for people to carry on and struggle for months, or even years, with their mental health before reaching out. For as long as someone struggles, it can take up to that same amount of time to get back to their baseline of happiness. “That’s why

“Those are the skills we’re teaching,” says Lindsey, “so that people feel comfortable sharing their ideas and giving feedback.

Queen of the Throne

Colon hydro-therapist Petrina Tonkin is on a mission to make us more interested in –and less embarrassed about – our lavatory habits by way of her laugh-out-loud Colon Talk which she conducts at Eden Health Retreat and Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat in Queensland. Verve sat down (no pun intended) with Petrina to find out more.

The treatment, says Petrina, falls into two categories: ‘open’ and ‘closed’. 51 September 2022

JAMIEWORDSCHRISTIAN DESPLACES

“You could say I kind of fell into it! It’s certainly not something you just wake up one day and dream of doing. I had some health issues back in the 90s which colonics really helped with, so it all started from there. Everyone else I meet in the industry generally has a similar story and we all share this massive passion for the treatment and for wanting to help others.”

“The Colon Talk is a light-hearted reflection on pooing in the modern world. How to keep our colons healthy and the modern-day dilemmas that often get in the way. We take a toilet tour around the world and at the end I sing –not very well! – a little parody of On the Road Again called On the Throne Again to tie together, in one ridiculous tune, all the tips for happy pooing.”

A colon hydro-therapist is someone who performs colonic irrigations (also known as colon cleansing or colonic hydrotherapy, often abbreviated to ‘colonics’), a procedure that involves inserting a tube into the rectum to flush toxins from the bowel with water – and it dates all the way back to Ancient Egypt. A professional drummer in a previous life (she also runs drumming workshops and serves as a massage therapist at the retreats), I ask Petrina what led her down the unusual path of colonic hydrotherapy.

Tech, poor diets, and inactivity aside, Petrina says even the way we sit on the toilet goes against our body’s design. The ideal position for a healthy and efficient bowel movement is the squat (Petrina recommends investing in a squatting stool to raise our legs into the correct position while seated on the “Andtoilet).then there’s the ‘toxic aisle’, which is what I call the aisle in the supermarket dedicated to covering up the smell of something that is one of the most basic human functions.

“Open is where the therapist looks after several patients in several rooms all at once, and the patients must insert the tube themselves. I run closed sessions which means that I work with the patient one-on-one from start to finish and do everything for them – including the insertion. I’ve heard anecdotally of folk injuring themselves during open sessions, and I believe that this is partly to blame for giving the practice a bad Petrinaname.”doesn’t shy away from the polarising nature of the work and admits that she regularly gets shot down by those from the medical industry.

“Doctors are always the most doubtful,” she says.

“Unfortunately, there haven’t been too many scientific studies on colonics, which I think is a real shame. It’s my dream for natural and conventional medicine to work more closely together. I had one GP come because several of his patients had been raving about the treatment and he wanted to see what all the fuss was about. That was 10 years ago, and he’s been back every year since.”

Petrina reveals that the whole reason she began to give the talk was because people were arriving for their colonics upset that other guests were “giving them a bad rap” and “spreading misinformation”.

A popular put down is that colonic hydrotherapy is unnatural, to which Petrina responds that “neither is the way most of us live our lives – so maybe it requires something ‘unnatural’ to balance things out”.

“So, I volunteered to do the Colon Talk on my own time. I discovered that many people had huge hang-ups around the topic, and guests would challenge me and often walk out mid-talk. The talk is now one of the most popular at Eden and Gwinganna, and has gone from having five to 10 people show up, to almost a full house every time, much to my surprise.”

I’ve read labels on some of those toxins that we flush into the water that say that they may be harmful to aquatic life!” Beauty & Health 52

53 September 2022

“Magnesium is great for muscle function, and people don’t realise that the colon is a muscle,” she says. “It is called a ‘bowel movement’, after all.” Petrina’s Colon Talk was never supposed to humorous, she admits, it happened by accident.

Speaking of aisles, Petrina has some advice to stop us getting so gassy and bunged up while flying, too.

Petrina tells of a young woman who spent her youth thinking it was perfectly normal to poo just once a week as she was raised in a household too conservative to discuss such things. And she says that she continues to be astounded by the number of people that refuse to poo at work or in a public place – holding it in is a habit that is unhealthy.

As for other tips, Petrina says we should be eating – and chewing – well, switching off our screens to pursue more artistic and active endeavours, drinking plenty of water, checking out the Bristol Stool Chart (a pictorial guide to poo types and what they mean), and, after getting the okay from a health practitioner, upping our magnesium intake by way of supplements or adding Epsom salts to our baths.

“It’s called ‘crop-dusting’. Just walk up and down the plane and silently let rip – it’s what all the attendants do!”

“I’m by no means a perfect pooer,” says Petrina. “It’s essential that we have these conversations about it, it’s so important –even if we do have to do it by way of joking!”

“I was telling the story about how I once farted loudly during a massage treatment – not a colonic treatment – on a man, so I couldn’t blame him! The treatment was called ‘Sprit of Sound’, which got a big laugh from the audience, and I realised the comedy potential.”

A popular put down is that colonic hydrotherapy is unnatural, to which Petrina responds that “neither is the way most of us live our lives – so maybe it requires something ‘unnatural’ to balance things out”.

Fotona IncontiLase® for stress urinary incontinence (SUI)

This isn’t an easy subject to talk about and many of us suffer in silence. But the truth is, whether it be from multiple births, menopause or simply growing older, pelvic floor issues are real.

Fotona RenovaLase® - for vaginal dryness and atrophy post menopause · Fotona InitmaLase® - for vaginal Introducedlaxity to New Zealand by Dr Mirjana Janjic, transvaginal medical laser treatments are set to change women’s lives. While living in Melbourne in 2014, Dr Janjic had the rare opportunity to travel to Europe to train in minimally invasive transvaginal laser procedures.

Dr Janjic says it’s fantastic for rebuilding vaginal tissues after damage due to: multiple births

Indeed, none of us wants to experience any of them, but many of us do.

“I was trained by the two pioneers who are wonderful gynaecologists, Dr Sabina Sencar and Dr Urska Bizjak Ogrinc,” she Onsays.her return, she and Dr Else de Wit made the highly specialised treatments known in Australia. “We were the first doctors to use the transvaginal laser to treat pelvic floor conditions there.”

Transvaginal laser differs from aesthetic laser procedures because it uses a special non-ablative mode that has a gentle photo-thermal effect on tissue. And there’s solid evidence from clinical trials to back its safety and efficacy.

· “Wegeneralmenopauseageinglosecollagen and pelvic floor support weakens with age. The laser stimulates collagen which thickens and tightens the vaginal tissues and endopelvic fascia improving the entire area.” 57 September 2022

Did you know 50% of women will experience urinary incontinence? Or that other vaginal conditions may arise after childbirth and menopause?

Fortunately, there have been advances in this area of health. And the good news is transvaginal medical laser treatments are now available including:

Things that affect our quality of life, our sex lives and… well… our confidence.

What we’re referring to here are conditions such as stress urinary incontinence (SUI), vaginal atrophy, vaginal prolapse, and vaginal laxity.

“I see women in their 30s with SUI from excessive physical exercise, mostly from weightlifting. A lot of women aren’t aware of that possibility.”

Treatment If treatment is right for you, it takes 45 minutes and three are required, one month Vaginalapart.laser is non-ablative and not uncomfortable as the vaginal moisture dampens the laser’s heat. Post-treatment the body goes into repair mode. “It’s time to go home and lie down with your feet up because the body’s likely to react in some way. Some women may have increased discharge, others may feel a little achiness like period pain, but we rarely see any complications.” Results Transvaginal medical laser results are gradual and impermanent. Therefore, maintenance is required.

“There are variables because everyone produces collagen differently. “Most women come back at 9-12 months. They’re guided by noticing a change when they exercise or walk the dog. That’s the sign it’s time for maintenance.”

“These conditions can influence a perpetual circle of suffering and I think we can do better for women.” Dr Mirjana Janjic

I call it ‘a benefit of light’.” It’s important to perform pelvic floor exercises also.

“Laser can’t replace exercises because you need strong muscles and healthy tissues. Women report 65-75% improvement in their symptoms after they attend pelvic floor physio training. But it takes several weeks to see results and needs to be done regularly, preferably by a trained physiotherapist.” Weight management, drinking enough (not excessively, see below), and moderating any heavy lifting are key too.

In addition, laser can help you find sexual pleasure again. “Some women experience lack of sexual stimulation after childbirth. This is due to laxity from the stretching of the vaginal wall. Sometimes things don’t come back to the shape they were. It becomes not so much about lubrication but feeling Lasertighter.”also aids post-menopausal genital urinary syndrome. “The other issues become worse in menopause because everything in the area is thinner, and we lose support around the urethra. The laser creates a healthier environment in the vaginal tissue with hydration and increased blood circulation.

Non-Irritating: HerbalWater tea Red bush tea Decaf tea and coffee Diluted Non-acidicjuicefresh drinks

“Results begin after the second treatment. I call it the gift that keeps on giving because as a person who has received the treatment myself, I was better at three months and fantastic at six months,” says Dr Janjic. “The older we are the longer it takes for our collagen to be stimulated – maximum effects usually take three to six months.

CordBank NZ is the proud caretaker of precious cord blood stem cells belonging to thousands of babies throughout New Zealand, stored in case they may one day be needed for a life-changing or lifesaving medical treatment. Perfect Match

“Those stem cells are a perfect match to you,” says Jenni.

Sharing her frustration with her obstetrician – who agreed such an option should absolutely exist in New Zealand – they decided to make it happen.  “Combining her medical expertise with my commercial experience,” says Jenni, “we embarked on a lengthy process involving mountains of official paperwork to make our vision a reality.” Their perseverance paid off when they were granted a license from the Ministry of Health to manufacture medicine, under the recognition that the cord blood stem cells saved are stored for medical use in future. Two decades on, CordBank New Zealand is the only company licensed to collect and store cord blood in New Zealand, and is audited annually by Medsafe, the most stringent level of quality applied to cord blood facilities globally.

The exact DNA match also means they won’t be rejected by the individual’s system if they’re used in medical treatment, and they can even be a good match for siblings also, with a 50% chance of half a match.

What makes cord blood stem cells (found in the umbilical cord at birth) so powerful, is that they’re brand new, undamaged by the ageing process and pollutants we’re exposed to over time, and a perfect DNA match.

“Think about it like photocopying. We’re born as this perfect, crystal-clear image, but with age, the image becomes paler and more faded. Adding more stem cells is basically a reboot, because those cells don’t dissipate, they divide and replicate.”

Jenni first learned about the regenerative powers of cord blood stem cells when pregnant with her second daughter, not long after her father died from a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

“Cord blood stem cells are superior to bone marrow stem cells which rely on finding a donor who’s an exact match. It’s timeconsuming and involves a painful extraction process, plus the cells are much older, and there’s a risk of rejection when Cordtransplanted.”bloodstem cell transplants have been helping save lives since 1988 when the first procedure took place in France. Since then, there have been more than 40,000 transplants for Labour of Love 60

Determined to do everything she could to prevent her child from suffering like her father, Jenni decided to bank her baby’s cord blood should her child ever need her stem cells to help treat a serious illness or injury. She was extremely disappointed, however, to discover that there was no such service in New Zealand, despite it being widely available in other countries, and no way to get her baby’s cord blood to an overseas lab in time for it to be viable. “It just seemed so straightforward, to use these perfect, brand new backup cells to help fix something that may go wrong later in life,” says Jenni. “I couldn’t let go of wanting parents to be able to store cord blood here in New Zealand, close at hand, protected by New Zealand law, and ready should their child need it.”

“The exciting part now,” says Jenni “is seeing the emerging studies that cord blood stem cells are being used in, and looking towards a future where they’ll be able to help people even Whilemore.” there’s investment involved in retrieving the cord blood stem cells and keeping them stored, it’s not as expensive as many think, and interest-free payment plans make it more feasible. The initial cost is $2,100, with an annual storage fee of $225. Over the years, banking cord blood has also become a popular gift from the grandparents. “Many grandparents see it as a legacy gift,” says Jenni. “Something that they can pay for what will outlast their lives and be there for the whole of their grandchild’s lives. There’s no downside.”

• A dedicated courier company collects the cord blood kit and takes it to CordBank’s state-ofthe-art lab in Auckland where it’s cryopreserved for storage until its needed.

“It makes all the hard work worth it. Of course, the best outcome is not needing to use cord blood stem cells at all, but for many of our CordBank families, just knowing that they have it stored is a way they can help future-proof their child’s health, and put their minds at ease.”

Bellyful welcomes new volunteers; you can sign up via its website. It’s currently looking for anyone who would like to help set up and lead new branches in South Auckland, particularly Papakura. bellyful.org.nz

“We’re there for anyone who doesn’t have those traditional support networks,” says Bellyful general manager, Wendy “WhetherThompson.you have a newborn and no whānau nearby, someone is unwell, or you just need a break, as long as you have a pēpi (baby) or young children, our volunteers can deliver enough frozen meals to get you through a few nights.”

Bellyful exists for exactly that reason. It’s a volunteer-driven charity that cooks and delivers free meals to whānau with babies or young children who need a hand.

“Since then, Bellyful has grown to 25 branches, including six in Auckland, and we have cooked and delivered over 190,000 meals to more than 35,000 whānau ,” Thompson says.

“You can also refer yourself – we believe it is brave to do so,” Thompson says.

It Takes a Village...

Bellyful was founded in Pukekohe in 2009 by Jacqui Ritchie, who had a vision of women coming together to cook and distribute meals to mums who had new babies and lacked support.

Meals are cooked around once a month by a team of volunteers in a ‘Cookathon’, then packaged and frozen, ready to be delivered to whānau who need them.

Recent recipient Linsay Box says Bellyful went above and beyond. “I would definitely encourage others to reach out to Bellyful when in need. I’m not one that generally accepts offers of help but this time I am so glad that I did. This organisation is just wonderful."

They say it takes a village to raise a child – but what happens when you don’t have that village?

Bellyful supports all whānau with babies or young children, as long as they live in one of its delivery areas. Anyone can make a referral via bellyful.org.nz but must have the permission of the whānau first.

Knowledge is power, and I am seeing birthing people educate themselves, investing in our future generations. Birth is such a unique experience for everyone. Birth has no rules. We all have moments in our lives when we feel overwhelmed and in need of more support. Birth is no exception!

The thing I love about being a doula is that I get to meet so many awesome people. I feel so fortunate to be invited into anyone’s birthing space, to share in their journey.

Think of me as your labour coach. Preparing you during pregnancy and working with you for one of the most significant events of your life. Offering you personalised one-on-one attention. I have such a unique role. Creating a BabyFriendly Kitchen

Feeding needs to be an enjoyable experience for parents and baby alike. Those who gain pleasure from food during mealtimes throughout their childhood have fewer problems keeping up a healthy diet as an adult and are less likely to develop issues around food.

Making small changes Whether tiny or spacious, old-fashioned or high-tech, once a child appears on the scene, it’s a good idea to organise even the smallest of kitchens to suit the needs of the entire family. There is no need to unleash an army of architects to knock down walls or employ interior decorators to rearrange furniture.

In the early months, breast or bottle feeding can be done in a comfortable nursing chair, as part of the nursery furniture.

A highchair needs to: conform to strict guaranteed New Zealand safety standards be stable and impossible to topple over · be light and easy to carry · be convenient to store be easy to clean be the right size for your baby, so trying it out first in-store is a good idea · have an adjustable seat height, so it can grow with your child

When the time comes to start weaning, switch to a highchair, which keeps a baby upright while feeding and eliminates the risk of choking. Find a space for the highchair near the adults’ table where it can be positioned safely and conveniently to offer food to the baby, whose first experiences of pureed fruit, pureed vegetables, or baby rice work best when everyone feels relaxed, comfortable, and well-disposed in a comfortable chair.

Extracted from The Silver Spoon: Recipes for Babies RRP $49.99, Phaidon

Keeping baby happy

At mealtimes the highchair should be strategically placed in the dining area where it isn’t too busy and away from very bright lights. If the highchair is in the kitchen, it should be away from the heat of a stove or oven.

It is recommended that you never leave a child in a highchair unattended. If you have to move away from your baby for a few seconds, place the highchair with its back to a wall to be certain it will not topple over. 69 September 2022

The setting for this formative food experience is the kitchen, which must become a welcoming place for every baby.

Actually, just a few changes are needed to create a safe and tranquil corner where parents and baby can embark on their new adventure in feeding, together creating a unique bond in the process. Setting the scene Grown-ups love to eat their food in a quiet, dimly lit, ambient atmosphere. For a baby, it is enough simply not to have bright lights shining in their face as they savour their first spoonfuls of grated apple or pear. In reality, little effort is needed to turn part of the kitchen into a calm oasis for the new bonding experience between parent and baby that occurs during feed time.

Important features of a highchair

1 2cmpotatopiece of leek, white only 2 2½artichokescups/600ml water

PreparationIngredients time: 15 minutes

Equipment needed: Vegetable peeler, paring knife, pan with lid, hand-held immersion (stick) blender or food processor, fine-mesh strainer, small stainless-steel whisk.

Keep experimenting, but gradually:

4–5 tbsp instant baby rice small slice of leftover cooked lamb

Your baby may not immediately like the flavour of leek. Before making this new cereal, try adding a little piece of leek to a basic vegetable broth recipe to get them used to the flavour. Do not be surprised if your child refuses food at some point, even if they are healthy and normally eat well – they may be teething. At such a time, even contact with the spoon can cause discomfort and make milk more appealing.

1 tsp extra virgin olive oil Wash, peel, and dice the potato. Wash the piece of leek thoroughly and halve. Wash the artichokes, remove the leaves and choke, leaving only the hearts, then rinse under running water. Put all the vegetables in a pan, cover with the water, partially cover with the lid, and bring to a boil over a high heat. Lower the heat and let simmer, about 30 minutes. Strain the vegetable broth (stock). Using a hand-held immersion (stick) blender or food processor, puree the strained Warmvegetables.¾–1

Blend the cooked lamb in a food proces sor to a smooth puree. Stir 2 tablespoons of the pureed vegetables and the pureed meat through the cereal, mixing well. Transfer the cereal mixture to a small plate. Season with the olive oil, mix again, and serve. Do not add salt. Any leftover pureed vegetables can be di vided into small portions and then frozen or stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours for subsequent meals.

Baby Rice with Potato, Artichokes, and Lamb Labour of Love 70

Recipes for 6 to 7 Months:

Cooking time: 40 minutes Makes: one portion

2 heaped tbsp fresh shelled peas or frozen petit pois 2cm piece of scallion (spring onion), white only ¼ cup/30g diced, lean, cooked ham 1 cup/240ml vegetable broth (stock) 2 tbsp baby rice 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil

PreparationIngredients time: 5 minutes

Cooked ham: From the eighth month onward, you can add cooked ham to this risotto, an ingredient that goes well with peas. Choose a natural, phosphate-free product. Remove any fat and only use the lean parts.

Carefully rinse the peas, if using fresh. Wash and slice the scallion (spring onion). Place the vegetables in a pan and cover with water. Bring to a boil over a high heat and cook for 20-25 minutes. Strain the cooked vegetables and, using a hand-held immersion (stick) blender or a food processor, blend to a puree. Grind up the ham in a food processor. Warm the vegetable broth (stock) in a pan. As it comes to the boil, add the baby rice and cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon as if making risotto. About 1 minute before the end of the cooking time, stir the pureed vegetables through the “risotto”. Remove the pan from the heat and add the ham. Transfer the risotto to a small plate. Season with the olive oil, and serve. Do not add any salt.

Recipes for 8 to 24 Months:

Equipment needed: Paring knife, pan, fine-mesh strainer, hand-held immersion (stick) blender or food processor, wooden spoon.

Cooking time: 35 minutes Makes: one portion Method

Radicchio risotto: When your baby reaches 12 months, try introducing radicchio cooked in a risotto. Soften a diced onion in some oil, then finely shred a few radicchio leaves and add them to the pan. Saute the vegetables for 5 minutes and then add the baby rice and cook as usual.

40 Over 40 A Celebration Of Women JENNAWORDSMOORE Beauty & Health 74

Inspired by work she’d noticed while being mentored by Sue, Charmaine had the idea to create an exhibition of beautiful, black and white female portraits titled 40 Over 40

75 September 2022

Charmaine acknowledges some women feel fear about taking part in a photoshoot. “They ask themselves, ‘Do I put myself out there?’, ‘Do I want to be seen?’, then there’s the comparisons and worrying about what other people think,” she says. “Some people say they feel a photoshoot is worse than going to the dentist. I can understand that - no one can see while it’s happening so you experience something that might be outside your comfort zone in privacy.

“To me, our lifestyle can be the thing that keeps our youthfulness within us yet still lets us age gracefully. To be okay with the extra lines that show we’ve lived life. With 40 Over 40 , I wanted to focus on women as we age.” Charmaine notes how we usually see a lot of younger people and models.

Originally a wedding photographer, Charmaine moved to portrait photography nine years ago. “At first, I was a bit lost,” she tells Verve . “I took photos of babies and families, but it didn’t feel right.” She realised she wanted to support women. “So, when a photographer I’d always admired – Sue Bryce* – began teaching photographers her style of feminine photography I immediately signed up. And now I primarily photograph women.”

“Just because you’re growing older doesn’t mean you have to not begin something or not try something new. It can be a time to move forward. But we tend to say, ‘I’m too old for that.’ I say no to that! Wear whatever you want to wear if it makes you feel good. Go pole dancing when you’re 60 or 70 or whatever you want to do. If it lights you up that’s what’s going to keep you younger in your heart and soul. That’s the idea behind 40 over 40 .”

“During the 40 Over 40 photoshoots, we get to bring those parts out because you get to play a little bit more. It’s a form of selfexpression, a place where you can explore.”

“I thought it would be great for 40 women aged over 40 to be whoever they wish to be in the world. And to see portraits of ourselves as women, something real and raw.

“I’m in my 40s and a lot of people say that when you hit 40 you don’t care as much about what other people think. I feel that’s true for some people, but not for others. There’s still a lot of focus on trying to stay young but we want a healthier way than using photoshop.

(*Ed’s note: Now based in Los Angeles, Sue Bryce is one of the most recognisable photographers in the imaging industry. Her original business was in Newmarket, Auckland.)

Charmaine Marinkovich is the photographer behind 40 Over 40, a stunning collection of black and white portraits featuring 40 women aged over 40.

Charmaine wants women to let go of perfection and acknowledge themselves and who they are in each stage of their “Ourlives.

“A lot of women look at their portraits and point out what they don’t like about themselves. But other people look at the images and see all the goodness in them. I want more women to look at their portraits and think ‘I love this about myself’ or ‘I like that about me’. There are so many parts to us as women. And it’s okay to be the confident woman, the quieter version of ourselves, the sexier side of us, or the comfy mum at different times.

bodies constantly change and they’re never going to stop changing so let’s embrace it.

“I find women often go on to other things. It’s like a ripple effect. I remember one photo shoot where the woman told me she’d always wanted to work for herself. And at the opening of 2020’s 40 Over 40 exhibition she came up to me and said, ‘I’ve quit my job of 30 years and gone out on my own and the photo shoot had a lot to do with it.’ The shift came from doing something for herself.”

Though I’d completed a handful of weekend runs – driven by the lollies in my front pack rather than a love of running – during the weeks I had put them off. So, the day the marathon was cancelled was one of the happiest days of my life.

I ordered another G&T at the bar and raised a ‘cheers’ to my zero-running future.

I thought I’d discovered three things about myself: 1. I hated running 2. I lacked self-discipline 3. I lacked willpower But I was Self-disciplinewrong.and willpower have absolutely nothing to do with it. I simply hadn’t found my form of movement. You see, I’m a former high-intensity, exercise-obsessed runner. Over the last 10 years my exercise life has swung from daily HIIT sessions at Sydney studios to pounding the pavements of ILondon.lovedto sweat, but I hated to be consistent.

of define pilates, Vicky Shepherd pens her experience and tips on finding consistency and falling in love with movement this season.

On 22 October 2019 I signed up for the Brighton Marathon. What ensued was a gorgeous pair of new Nikes and the download of a six-month plan to get me on the streets of the seaside town; but 30 days later, the marathon was cancelled, and it was all over.

STACK AND STACK AGAIN When trying to build consistency in your movement – whatever it is – layer and attach a new movement form onto a formed habit you love. This is especially helpful on those days you find more challenging than others. For example: as soon as my morning coffee is made (a habit I love), it's a trigger to get out the door and on my walk to move my body. definepilates.co.nz

Movement or exercise shouldn't feel like a chore or punishment. I firmly believe this. 77 September 2022

DON’T SETTLE If we watch a movie we despise, we don’t sit down next weekend to re-watch it in the hope that it’ll come alive for us second time. You move on. If you haven’t found a form of movement you genuinely look forward to (most of the time!), I would encourage you to keep looking. For me, it’s pilates, for you it might be interval training, hiking, yoga… and so on.

EMBRACE SEASONALITY I never knock high-impact forms of movement like HITT training. During my earlier years this type of fitness served me incredibly well. It helped me fall in love with exercise and created relief amongst a stressful job. In my current season, HITT training doesn’t serve me. In another five years’ time, perhaps it will again. Understand that some forms of movement may serve you during different seasons in your life and in other times they may not stack up.

I have friends who are completely enamoured by running. I salute them! But it’s just not for me. Or, more aptly, not for me right now. Movement or exercise shouldn't feel like a chore or punishment. I firmly believe this. Of course, some days will be more challenging to get to that class or lace up those trainers. But overall, I know it’s possible to fall in love with movement, and here are my top tips how…

DITCH THE END GOAL For so many years I stuck with running because I was adamant that it was the way to a leaner, athletic physique. I was chasing the end, aesthetic result and completely bypassing the way that this form of exercise felt for my body. For once, ditch the end goal and focus on the process of discovering movement again.

The silver lining? It’s led me to a full exploration of different types of And,movement.thenail in the coffin by way of a covid-cancelled first marathon attempt, led me into a discovery of Thispilates.low-impact yet sweat-inducing exercise entirely redefined my relationship with exercise. For the first time in my life, I craved movement. It was my first taste of a sustainable form of fitness that kept me coming back for more. But my takeaway is not that everyone should do pilates. Pilates won’t be for everybody, and that is exactly the point.

The oral ageing process can often be seen much more predominantly in women, as men’s facial hair, even stubble, provides some protection from the sun and slows the effect of photoageing around the mouth.

· lifting of the cheek · temporalhands hollowing

Despite still being hidden behind masks here in New Zealand, lip rejuvenation continues to be in demand. Decreasing levels of collagen and elastin, gravity, muscle action, and sun damage all contribute to what are commonly called ‘smoker’s lines’.

While we have some patients that are looking for a makeover experience, most still follow a longer-term plan, backing up treatments with an active skincare regime at home.

Some might argue that a big contributor is the belief that women use their facial muscles more than men as they speak more! I won’t be using my facial muscles to comment on this as I’m trying to keep my face as smooth as possible!

A good practitioner can visualise what the end result will be and guide you through the process, assessing the results along the way and making adjustments, if necessary, at each stage. The slow but steady approach can also help avoid those awkward “OMG you look so amazing what work have you had done?” moments. ELIMINATE works in synchronicity with REPAIR. While keeping your telomeres as long as possible, there will be cells that develop critically short telomeres. Those cells can wreak havoc on neighbouring cells and age your entire body. These dangerous cells create the “waterfall effect” of ageing. It’s important that we do everything we can to turn those cells off or eliminate them.

Rather than cosmetic injections, many patients prefer rejuvenation treatments with medifacials, peels and laser. Medical needling is also popular.

Which EltaMD products are most effective against ageing?

It’s the USA’s number one dermatologist-recommended sunscreen, with formulations for all skin types and lifestyles. Depending on skin types, we recommend sunscreens that contain healthy ingredients such as hyaluronic acid for hydration. The range offers a broad spectrum of protection, is fragrance- and sensitivity-free, and doesn’t contain parabens, with tinted and untinted formulas offered.

With so much available, how do you work with clients to determine the best path forward?

This is where consultations are so important. We allow up to an hour for the first consultation to get to know the patient. Although we’re the experts, it’s vital to listen and understand everyone’s situation and goals, including budgets and timelines. We also recommend patients have regular ‘existing patient consults’, which are free, to evaluate progress and recommend any new treatment options. We’re always attending conferences so we know what is available and what is best for patients.

There’s so much more awareness of what’s available, and although many patients choose not to tell people about treatments like Botox, there’s much more acceptance around appearance enhancing treatments. More men are having treatments and coming for skincare advice, which is great.

Angela Frazer, RN 83 September 2022

What are your most popular treatments?

What changes have you seen in the appearance medicine and skincare industry over the years?

Founded by plastic surgeon Stephen Gilbert in 1993, Prescription Skin Care is one of the longest running clinics in New Zealand. Verve sat down with clinical coordinator for the Remuera and Ponsonby clinics, Angela Frazer.

Tell us about the EltaMD Range?

The only cosmetic injectable treatment available when we first opened was collagen injections. The number of dermal fillers available has grown tremendously and we now have a fantastic range of non-animal hyaluronic acid fillers, which require no allergy test, last up to two years – sometimes longer – and are available to treat many more concerns. Plus, there’s There’sBotox.somuch more technology within the industry, too. In 2012 we introduced coolsculpting, a non-surgical permanent fat reduction treatment, to the NZ market, something we wouldn’t have thought possible in the 90s when there were only a few laser and light machines. Skincare ingredients, products and rejuvenation treatments such as peels have seen many changes. Today we have less aggressive but very effective skin rejuvenation treatments.

The initial consultation is performed to assess and discuss your concerns and desired aesthetic goals, then a tailored and customised treatment plan will be created. A total of six handpieces can be used per 15-minute treatment, and multiple areas can be treated on the same day. Once medical consent is completed skin adhesives are attached to the skin overlying the fat pocket followed by the handsfree applicators. The treatment area is wrapped in a cummerbund to minimise movement of handpieces during treatment. After 15 minutes of warmth is distributed into the tissue, the adhesives, handpieces and cummerbund are removed and the patient can return to normal activities.

How do I know if I am a candidate? truSculpt iD is the latest in non-invasive fat removal procedures in minimising treatment time, maximising results and comfort whilst reducing downtime (there is none!). truSculpt iD is a great treatment for targeting stubborn fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise, or for a more global debulking option. truSculpt iD is not restricted by BMI or skin laxity concerns, making it a great alternative to cryotherapies. To learn more about if you’re a suitable candidate, book a free consultation with Sue at Finesse. How many treatments will I need? Your initial assessment and personal goals will determine the best course of treatment tailored to you, however patients will only require one treatment. Whether one or two treatments are required, all patients will see an effect at 12 weeks. Is the treatment painful? No! Patients report the treatment feels like getting into a hot bath. The heat at first can be a little intense, but just like a bath you become accustomed to the feeling and adjust to the treatment. There is no pain, no downtime and no massage required. Patients can return to normal activities immediately after with most patients only experiences some mild redness on the treatment zone which subsides in a couple of hours.

How does truSculpt iD work?

How long before I see my results? Clients will begin to see a change in their silhouette from 6 – 8 weeks post treatment, but maximum results are achieved at week 12. Changes in skin quality, tone and texture are usually seen earlier. Each area can be treated once per 12-weeks but other areas can be treated before then.

Treatment areas: abdomen (upper, mid and lower), flanks (love handles), upper back fat, lower back fat, inner thighs, outer thighs, arms and under the chin.

TruSculpt iD is the latest technology available to permanently and non-invasively remove body fat. “We have been leaders in non-invasive cellulite and body contouring treatments in Auckland for 20 years,” says Sue Crake, owner of the Remuera Salon.

truSculpt iD uses a unique form of monopolar radio frequency energy that penetrates evenly and deeply and is able to treat deep into the entire fat pad - from skin to muscle. Once the applicators have been placed on target fatty areas, heat is dispersed evenly, causing irreparable damage to the fat cell walls which the body metabolises and removes permanently over the next 12 weeks. Real-time temperature control and monitoring sensors ensure a constant and therapeutic temperature is maintained for 10 minutes ensuring maximum fat disruption, resulting in 24% fat reduction with every treatment. Patient comfort is ensured through the highly engineered skin adhesives and temperature control which keeps the skin cooler than the underlying fat.

Dog Point dates to the early 1850s European settlements. Back then there were 57 sheep stations spread over more than a million acres of land. With no fences, boundary riders used dogs to protect the sheep from the marauding packs of wild dogs that camped at Dog Point. But that was not the only problem, for as the farming grew so did the rabbit population, making the land worthless.

The stations eventually disappeared and the State divided Marlborough into 550 properties for growing barley, wheat, vegetables, and livestock. In 1973 the first grapes were planted, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Here are four of Dog Point’s great wines I hope you will enjoy.

5. What the Building Act Covers

Buying a property ‘off the plans’ before completion is a popular investment option for both investors and homebuyers but there are additional risks involved. Here are five things to consider before buying ‘off the plans’:

7 Oct - 12 Nov

3. Bank Approval

| (09) 272 0002 lawhelp@dawsonslawyers.co.nz

2. Sunset Clause A sunset clause can sometimes allow for both parties to get out of an agreement if the build is not completed by a certain date. However, as a purchaser, you want to ensure only you have the right to cancel, instead of both parties. They’re intended to protect the buyer, but there have been cases where the developer has used them to get finance from presales, then terminated the contracts and resold the property at a higher price.

The Building Act 2004 provides implied warranties – the warranties apply for up to 10 years regardless of whether you have a written contract or not. As well as the implied warranties, there’s a 12-month defect repair period. If any defects in the building work emerge within 12 months of the completed build date, your builder has an obligation to fix them.

NATIONAL TOURING PARTNERSUPPORTED BY rnzb.org.nz/tutus

4. Body Corporate Rules/Fees

When buying off the plans, it’s important to thoroughly read the body corporate rules and budget set for the development. The rules include responsibilities around your obligations in respect to common property, vehicle parking, use of balconies (like no clotheslines or heatpumps), and there’s often a ‘no pets’ rule.

1. Established Developer

Ensure you purchase with a reputable, established developer with a proven track record of successful developments. To check track records, you can look up the firm involved in the project on the Companies Office website to see who the directors and shareholders are and whether firms they have been involved with in the past have gone into liquidation or receivership.

When obtaining bank finance, keep in mind that a bank’s offer of finance is usually only for about three months. If your circumstances or interest rates change significantly at the time of settlement it could impact your ability to borrow funds.

Some banks are now requesting the extra protection of a 10year building guarantee when you apply for lending to finance a new build. If you’re looking to buy a property off the plans, please get in touch with our team of experts at Dawsons Lawyers prior to signing a dawsonslawyers.co.nzcontract.

Nobody paints like Tony Lane. His landscapes speak of journeys, isolation, connection, meditation, and devotion. The view carries us in stages, lifts us visually, emotionally, and always towards the light. Rendered in Italian gesso on panel and set in handgilded frames, the paintings merge the symbolic with the personal, the experimental with the magical. Email for catalogue and list.

Throughout history Tongan warriors were the vanguard of many conflicts across Moana Oceania, hired by chiefs of other islands with blood ties to Tonga, for their wars and internal conflicts. ARTWORK: ELIZABETH REES , IN THE GARDEN 112

Marté Szirmay Earthlight Marté Szirmay has long been regarded as one of New Zealand’s most accomplished artists. Originally from Hungary, her works are represented in private and public collections in New Zealand and internationally. Creating sculptures for Marté is about creating a language of signs and symbols that transcend regional, cultural and social limitations. This new series of bronze works pays tribute to our Sun – “nothing is more important to us on Earth than the Sun”.

Elizabeth Rees The Backroad

This collection of new oil paintings by Elizabeth Rees marks the beginning of a new studio and lifestyle in the Bay of Islands. Fascinated by people from all walks of life in her Northland community, Rees began to assemble her impressions and visual notes on the colours, vegetation and pace of life in her new Reesenvironment.isapainter of mystery - the viewer will interpret these works in different ways and that is their strength. “My paintings I hope will convey just a thought about the beauty that is on our doorstep and fundamentally a part of us”.

vibrant exterior is based on a commission by Whanganui ceramic artist Ivan Vostinar. His unique raw ceramic base material – made with local beach sand – has been dipped in an oceanic inspired natural glaze and then intricately photographed and recreated to give the whole van the feeling of being a ceramic vessel. Among the many works on exhibit inside the van is a ceiling commission from Taranaki artist Gabrielle Belz featuring a glowing night sky. It's this, along with Manawatū’s Vonnie Sterritt’s painting printed onto the cabin's drop-down Art 114

The world's first gallerycampervan was inspired by, and created for, the ultimate experience of New Zealand’s Coastal Arts Trail, an artlovers' journey through the Manawatū, Whanganui, and Taranaki regions.

Featuring over 50 works by 26 different artists, Vallery represents just a taste of the sheer volume of art to be explored and experienced on the Coastal Arts Vallery’sTrail.

‘Vallery’ boasts an eclectic range of artworks collected from the regions' galleries and featuring commissions from local artists, as well as being something of a work of art herself. She’s now available for public hire from Quirky Campers NZ. The camper took six months to develop thanks to an intensive design and build process and a few Covid-related setbacks, but Vallery’s curator Aimée Ralfini says the end result was worth the “Ieffort.loveit when art connects with people outside a traditional white box space. Vallery is a completely immersive art experience: travellers can sleep under art, dine with art, recline on art, and it's all integrated in a comfortable and practical way. We have carefully sealed and protected works, and we have translated art onto hard-wearing surfaces and fabrics so people can just relax and have fun.”

curtains, that create the effect of being immersed within the landscape, even when you're inside. Curious travellers will find their explorations rewarded by the discovery of myriad petite artworks from right across the Coastal Arts Trail, hidden in drawers and in mounted lightbox features.

“The unique concept sparked interest from domestic and international travellers even before Vallery's completion,” says Quirky Campers' Leanne Edwards. "Our customers and followers are always keen to know what the next Quirky van will be. Each is so individual with its layout, style and function reflecting the tastes, wants and needs of its owners. But Vallery has really intrigued people because, inside and out, her look is the result of multiple artists. Even before her launch, with only the concept to go on and a basic description of her features, Vallery has attracted bookings both local and from Theoverseas."Coastal Arts Trail is New Zealand's newest and largest arts tourism experience, featuring over 50 stops across the lower west coast of North Island. From well-known institutions to hidden gems away from the beaten track, travellers can expect a full range of art experiences. If they're lucky enough to get a booking for the world's first gallery camper, they can also expect to do it in style.

Three Colours: Blue, White Red (Trois Couleurs: Bleu, Blanc, Rouge) M (for mature audiences)

This month, Verve’s star teen streaming reviewer Lucy Kennedy gets stuck into the classic arthouse trilogy, Three Colours.

Trois Couleurs are thoughtful, cultured, grief-ridden art, named after the colours displayed on the French national flag – each widely based upon a chosen political ideal in the motto of the French republic: liberty, equality, and fraternity. A recurring image across all the films is a shot of an elderly person struggling to deposit a bottle into a recycling bin, scenes which capture the spirit of each film. In Bleu , main character Julie does not notice the old woman in need of assistance, reflecting the spirit of liberty - being free within society. In Blanc, leading man Karol smirks at the older person in the spirit of equality, and in the final film, Rouge, Valentine helps her push the bottle into the bottle bank – the essence of fraternity.  I’m unable to pick a favourite of the films. Bleu tells the story of a grieving woman, attempting to pick up the pieces of her life after a car crash takes the lives of her husband and daughter.

The entire film is awash with stunning visuals, heartbreaking classical symphonies, and slanting blue lighting. Blanc tells the tale of a man dealing with his divorce from a wife he still loves. The film is set mainly in Poland, and white snow fills the landscape for much of the film; a quiet blankness that’s strangely comforting. Rouge follows a young model who accidentally hits a dog with her car and the events that follow. Red works its way into her everyday landscape, via a scarf thrown across a chair, the inner lining of a coat, a ferry ticket, even blood.

A Write of Passage

120

JAMIEWORDSCHRISTIAN DESPLACES In need of some inspiration – and peace and quiet –while finishing off his true-tales tome, The Scene of the Crime, writer Steve Braunias came upon the idea of setting up camp in Grey Lynn’s Surrey Hotel – a place he passed and gazed at most days on the bus. And so, in 2016, the Surrey Hotel Writer’s Residency Award, the nation’s “coolest literature prize”, was born.

How did the atmosphere or environment of the hotel help in the completion of The Scene of the Crime?

“It just struck me what a strangely ideal place it was to ignore the outside world and do the one thing all writers want to do: write,” Steve tells Verve . And write he most certainly did, polishing off around 30,000 words in just four days. “I pick up that feeling every time I go there. I think it’s something to do with its obscurity, and its eccentric mock-Tudor look – it’s a place of make-believe.”

“It has an extremely private and discreet atmosphere. I think that helped a lot when I wrote my book – crime is very often an attempt to do something very private, very discreet.”

This year, 131 writers entered the residency award, whittled down to a shortlist of 13. In August it was announced the winner is J Wiremu Kane, current emerging Māori writer in residence at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University and author of Waitangi Day short story, Ringarewa . His prize is a seven-night stay at Surrey Hotel along with $3,000 and the hotel’s legendary Sunday roast. Kane says he’s keen to work on his historical novel, Whakarongorua , an “epic” which will incorporate everything from sexuality to European colonisation.

Dunedin author Laurance Fearnley came in second (winning $1,000 and five nights), while third place ($500 and three nights) is shared by Becky Manawatu, author of Auē , and Hawke’s Bay short story writer Shelley Burne-Field.

“Most of them have got in touch and said it was awesome. A few never said anything, and as far as I could tell, never wrote anything – oh well!” Have you forged friendships with the residency award alumni? “Yes, definitely some of them, and now and then we’ll meet at the hotel for drinks. Colleen has become a really close and loyal friend, and it was great hanging out with John Summers and Nick Ascroft. I’ve become real good friends with the manager Denise King. She’s absolutely lovely and has been incredibly supportive and welcoming of all the writers who come to stay.”

I ask Steve about how the prize has evolved over the years and he lauds the “amazing generosity” of artist Dick Frizzell and “living legend” Sir Bob Harvey who have so far donated around $5,000 to wining writers. “That came out of the blue. I just hope the hotel continues to maintain the residency award, and that Dick and Bob are good for prize money for a little while And,longer.”as

Previous residency attendees include Fake Baby author Amy McDaid who described her stay as a “wonderful opportunity” that “will always hold a special place in my heart” and journalist Kelly Dennett who used her time there to work on a book about the death of Jane Furlong.

for what sets New Zealand’s “grooviest writer’s residency” apart from the others?

“A change of sheets, a good bar, and a Sunday roast that would convert a vegetarian!”

121 September 2022

“Kelly Dennnett’s The Life and Mysterious Death of Jane Furlong is an amazing piece of crime writing,” says Steve. “I love the way she writes about herself and introduces herself as a character in the book; it was totally the right thing to do and served the story she was telling. And Colleen Maria Lenihan’s newly published collection of short stories, Kōhine , is another favourite.” What kind of feedback have you had from the writers?

The Booker Prize has a storied history in New Zealand with two Kiwi authors taking one of the literary world’s top awards in groundbreaking circumstances. Keri Hulme was both the first New Zealander and first debut author to win the prize with The Bone People , and Eleanor Catton was the youngest-ever recipient with The Luminaries. With the 2022 Booker Prize longlist just announced, Jo Bennett rounds up a list of award-winning books to dip into during these cooler winter months.

I was reminded of this book when I saw news of Frida Kahlo’s forthcoming exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery. Kingsolver, perhaps best known for her sweeping epic The Poisonwood Bible, fuses art, politics and war in this Women’s Prize-winning novel. We join American-born Harrison Shepherd on a thrilling odyssey straddling the USA and Mexico as he finds himself working and eventually befriending artists Diego Rivera and the enigmatic Frida Kahlo. When Shepherd becomes secretary to Leon Trotsky, he is thrust into a world of art and revolution, newspaper headlines and gossip, while the risk of political violence throbs menacingly in the background. This book made me feel I was at a lively, intellectual dinner conversation where art and politics blend in a bright and unforgettable palette.

On the Bookshelf

THE PROMISE Damon Galgut Galgut had been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three-times previously before taking the top prize for this modern family epic in 2021. The Promise reveals a South African family in crisis. Reunited by four funerals over three decades, they reflect on the atmosphere of the country – one of resentment, renewal, and, ultimately, hope. While stylistically very different, the plot made me think of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying – another family saga steeped in cultural politics (interestingly, Galgut has been described as South Africa’s Faulkner). This is a deftly written and moving novel from a modern master.

DAYSBARBARIAN William Finnegan

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 2016, I was drawn to this book not by the blurb but the endorsement from Olivia Laing who wrote, “I don’t know anything about surfing, but I was gripped”. This is a gorgeously rendered memoir about obsession, craft and the time we give to things we love, even when we don’t know why. Finnegan is a reluctant surfer, an acclaimed New Yorker writer who “hid” his lifelong passion, worried it wasn’t serious enough for his reputation as a war reporter. For lovers of the ocean, and poetic reflective writing (Finnegan has been compared to James Salter), Barbarian Days will pull you along, like riding a perfect barrel. A lovely, absorbing read for wintery days.

The island of Hvar offers ancient towns, fragrant fields of lavender, centuries-old olive groves and vineyards. Of course, where there are vineyards, there is wine! Spend some time at one of the many small inns on the island – you’ll get to taste some delicious homemade wine and as the afternoon turns into evening, the songs start, and a great night is had by all! Hvar’s ancient town of Stari Grad is the oldest town in Croatia, dating back to 384 BC, its deep bay still providing a safe harbour and warm welcome today. Not far from Hvar is the island of Brač, with its delightful town of Bol, and the Insta-famous fine pebble beach of Zlatni Rat. The shape of this promontory beach changes regularly according to prevailing currents and winds, and the waters are so clear you can often see the seabed rocks at least 10m deep. Some serious downtime can be spent here, on the beach, and in the many harbourside bars and cafes.

Said to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, Korčula is a pictureperfect island with a strong arts and culture heritage. The old walled town is as picturesque as it is fascinating, and beyond the town are dense pine forests, olive groves and secluded bays beckoning you to swim.

Azure, turquoise, aquamarine, sapphire... you may never see as many shades of blue than there are in the Adriatic.

Add to that small villages of whitewashed houses and terracotta roofs, olive groves and vineyards on rocky landscapes, picture-perfect islands, and ancient walled cities oozing with history, and you have Croatia.

Dubrovnik is a good starting point. Impressive stone plazas, tiny, cobbled streets, and outdoor cafes make it a great place to explore on foot – make sure you walk atop the ancient city walls for views over the terracotta roofs. You may stumble across one of the first pharmacies in Europe, dating back to 1317 and still in operation today! Here you can purchase moisturisers made from original Franciscan recipes using local herbs. When your walking legs tire, it’s not hard to find a welcoming bar up a tiny side street where sitting in the shade with a cool drink is the perfect remedy.

CLEGG WORLD JOURNEYS 125 September 2022

Back on the mainland, your cruise may well end on a high in Split. A lively city, it has grown over the centuries on top of and around a palace built by the Roman emperor Diocletian who settled here in the year 305. For us Kiwis who marvel at anything older than a century, the history of this place, around which modern life carries on, is like no other place you’ve seen.

To best experience Croatia, board a traditional sailing ship with crew and set off along the coast, dropping anchor in a local village for dinner in a taverna. Foodies will delight in the fresh seafood and other tasty delicacies, often cooked by majka (mother) and served by other family members keen to chat. Spend your days swimming in crystal clear waters off the boat, and explore a different island each day.

If you can manage to drag your gaze away from the coast for a moment, you will also discover picturesque rural areas, the glorious Plitvice Lakes National Park and up to 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites. A little reminder that there is perhaps more to Croatia than stunning beaches and waters of myriad shades of blue.

As electric vehicle ownership becomes more commonplace, there are more reasons to have a bespoke charging solution at home. Installing a home charger for your EV is the safe and efficient solution to help future-proof your garage.

Smarter Home EV Charging

Home-grown solutions

EV ownership is becoming increasingly mainstream, and the reasons drivers are switching from combustion-engine to battery-powered cars are varied. Some have made the transition due to rising fuel costs or to reduce carbon emissions and their car’s environmental impact. Others are attracted to the new and rapidly evolving EV technology and the performance credentials of the latest models.

Another consideration with installing a faster AC charger at home is its increased energy demand. “One of the most common dedicated AC chargers is rated at 7.4kW, and this can pull up to half a home’s maximum energy load. If you’re looking for a way to charge as fast as possible with that system – up to 40km of range in an hour – but in a safe way, consider a charger that offers home overload protection.”

This is a feature by which a smart charger monitors your electricity draw and throttles back its charging speed as you get close to the maximum load threshold, which is commonly 63A.

“Home charging allows you to charge in a safe and clean environment at times when electricity is cheapest, typically overnight starting at 9pm. Smart charging systems allow you to take advantage of these off-peak times of use when electricity retailers offer less expensive rates that are ideal for EV owners. These are often times when a higher percentage of electricity on the grid is produced from renewable sources.”

“Down the line, householders may have more than one EV, and simultaneous charging demand doubles this strain on the mains, but smart charging can allow two EV chargers to communicate with each other and manage the shared load.”

The cars are typically provided with a three-pin removable wall plug, which is fine for temporary charging or as an emergency tool when out and about, but it’s by far the slowest method of charging. And while it works well as a portable or back-up solution, it’s not really a suitable method for longterm use, in part due to safety considerations.

Evnex is an NZ-based company developing technology solutions beneficial to all EV drivers, and its bespoke homecharging solutions are backed by professional installation and ongoing support. Justin Rypma, digital marketing manager, explains that the best scenario is to install a smart charging system with EV equipment that’s connected to the internet: “It’s a convenient way to connect your EV to the most affordable and cleanest electricity, but with faster charging speed and the ability to be wirelessly upgraded over time.

The cheapest home charger installation will be at a site close to your switchboard that requires no more than three metres of cable to be run between the two. And if your car predominantly lives outside, there are options for the charger to be mounted on the exterior of the house or via a pedestal mount near the home. Visit evnex.com for an answer to every charging question and a solution for every EV driver. 2022

129 September

“In the future, this technology will allow us to connect drivers with electricity companies directly, helping lines operators prevent blackouts while EV drivers continue to wake up to their EVs ready to go.”

In terms of future proofing, Justin says smart charging trials are already underway in NZ to make this process simpler for EV owners. While customers currently need to set a charging schedule to overlap with their electricity provider’s off-peak rates, advanced features like automated charging scheduling are being tested to shift with factors like clean energy availability, time of use pricing, and potential strain on the grid.

You see, this rudimentary charging method relies on the integrity of house’s wiring, the wall plug itself, and safe charging habits. These are why NZ’s Worksafe strongly recommends against this charging method, ‘Mode 2’ in an employee in-home charging context where businesses are responsible for safety.

New opportunities may emerge that turn your attention behind the You’rescenes.inaperiod of reflection and preparation, so take things as slowly as you can. Sacrifices may need to be made when it comes to your relationships – you are required to be sympathetic and helpful now.

manish@manishastrologer.com MANISHWORDS—KUMAR ARORA 20AQUARIUS2020TAURUSApril–MayJanuary –18 February

You get a big taste of positive energy this month. It is particularly strong for useful advice and the power of teaming up and combining your talents with someone. You might find yourself drawn to push the usual boundaries, which can be profound in healthy ways but could lead you down the wrong path if you’re not mindful of your limits.

This is a good time for reaching out to others, sharing ideas, writing, and scoping out various prospects and ideas. Your ideas or work may gain some recognition now. Putting your feelers out makes a lot of sense this month.

The biggest area of passion and possible upheaval this month is likely to involve your private world, family life, and home matters. You’re ambitious about these things now, desiring to make deep changes that will last. Someone who’s in the position to help further your goals, promote you, or help you find a direction will take a special interest in you. Express your faith in yourself now for best results.

21ARIESMarch

There could also be a major revelation about your finances, a love relationship, or friendship. You’re likely to feel more in your element on a romantic level.

Your competitive, enterprising nature comes to the fore, and you readily throw yourself into pursuing your goals. This can be a time of increased activity in your career, and you may also feel a strong desire to take the lead and act independently. Willingness to take emotional risks in the second half of the month can bring interesting experiences into your world.

You are exuding much charm and positive energy that won’t go unnoticed. Communications of all kinds are emphasised, but especially those involving creative contacts, children, and romantic interests, and they are generally favourable. You’re mentally wired, and you want to put ideas into action. You’re more conscientious as a result and take pride in solving problems, acquiring or honing skills, and taking care of business.

The last week of the month is particularly strong for ideas and plans surrounding work and health. You get along well with the people with whom you share your day.

As confident and energetic as you feel, however, avoid taking on too many new projects as you’re likely to feel their weight in the last week of the month.

This is a great month for picking up new practical skills, finding new work, or throwing more of yourself into your current job. It’s also a fine time for improving your daily habits and health.

It’s an inventive and creative time but you might also feel like a whirlwind. There can be a significant realisation of responsibility, or a sense of joy in committing to someone or something.

South African-born Kiwi cricketer Michael Rippon has had a cosmopolitan career having so far plied his trade in England, the Netherlands and now New Zealand. Verve caught up with him for a Father’s Day-dedicated chat as he took a break from the Black Caps’ tour of Scotland.

Cricket however, barely registered on Michael’s radar as a youth, instead he preferred to spend his hours on his aunt’s backyard tennis court in Cape Town, or at the driving range with his dad.

“Yeah, he is, and he always claims I got my cricketing skills from him,” says the sportsman with a chuckle. “But I remember when I was about five years old watching him play in a social game. Obviously, I really looked up to him as all boys do with their dads, but he went in to bat and got out on the first ball, and I was really upset! So, although I did inherit his athletic genes, maybe not so much the cricketing ones!”

First, Michael had a three-year plan that involved finishing school, attending the academy, and then heading to university before donning his cricketing whites full time, but the talented all-rounder found himself promoted from the youth system

Becoming a professional sportsman is, of course, the ultimate ambition of many a young boy, but I wonder if Michael – who’s also a keen surfer and hiker – had any other dreams growing up. An actor is the thing he most clearly remembers first wanting to be, he tells me, or, more specifically, “to be Batman”.

Are there any other life skills or lessons that you’ve learnt from him?

“My old man is pretty selfless, so Father’s Day would end up being more about me than him anyway! He’d always ask what I wanted to do, which usually meant the golf course. Nowadays it’s all about electronic postcards unfortunately.”

“Once you get to school, you’re encouraged to play team sports,” he goes on. “So, my summer sport was cricket, and my winter sport was hockey. That’s how I first got into cricket. Then me and Dad would head down to the nets a couple of times a week and hit balls I suppose that’s where I developed my loved for it, and the older I got, the better I got and began to realise I could maybe do it as a career.”

“I’ve always respected how he never forced me into anything. He always told me that whatever you want to achieve in life is possible, so long as you enjoy doing it because then you’ll be prepared to put in the required effort and make sacrifices. My career has been something of a rollercoaster, but both my parents have been of great support and never given up on me. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for all the sacrifices and countless hours of support my dad has put into my cricket from a young age. In life, not just in sport, you have to embrace the journey, and that’s something I’ve always tried to focus on, but you seldom go on a journey alone and both my parents have been hugely part of mine.”

As for favourite Father’s Day memories, Michael laments that owing to his globe-hopping, the timing of the cricket season, and, more recently, the pandemic, he hasn’t spent the special day with his dad for around 12 years. Before then, most of the best reminiscences revolve around the golf course.

And, if you think about it, a bat man, he has become.

I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for all the sacrifices and countless hours of support my dad has put into my cricket from a young age.

“Iearly.didwell at under-19 level and got thrown into the professional side, so it all happened pretty quick.” His dad, I say, must be incredibly proud.

135 September 2022

“I’ve always been exposed to sport,” says the cricketer over the phone from Edinburgh. “Both my parents were athletes, my dad did triathlons and won an Iron Man back in the 80s.”

For those looking for something a little more advanced – and adventurous – the Nydia Track is a two-day, 27km (one-way) path that also doubles as a mountain bike trail (so dogs must be on-leash at all times). The resplendent route crosses farmland and climbs a couple of saddles through coastal and regenerating forest with views of Te Hoiere/Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds. Stay at Nydia Campsite (non-powered sites) or upgrade to the nearby Nydia Lodge (onthetracklodge.co.nz); dogs aren’t allowed in the lodge buildings, but there’s accommodation for them onsite.

While dogs are generally not allowed in national parks, readers may be surprised to learn that there are ample DoC-managed tracks up and down the land where your pooch is free to wander with you (though usually leashed). DoC grounds fall into three categories: Open Access (dogs allowed, likely on-leash –check online or local signage); Permit Access (permit application required); and Controlled Access (no dogs). When searching for tracks on the DoC website, be sure to tick the ‘Dogs allowed’ box. Permits can be applied for either at the local DoC office, or by emailing them yours and your dog’s details. Permits may take up to five days, but are often issued the same day and, depending on the region, will be valid for the day(s) of your walk through to a few months.

Ōrongorongo Track, Wellington A local favourite with for both people and pooches, the Ōrongorongo Track is a 4- to 5-hour, route through Remutaka Forest Park. Not only does the well-trodden trail weave its way under gorgeous podocarp, beech and northern rātā forest, but terminates at Turere Stream where you and your four-legged friend can cool off. Don’t forget that towel!

Dogs ‘n’ DoC For a nation so in love with their dogs (more than a third of households have at least one), our nation is not always the most Fido-friendly, especially when it comes to lands maintained by the Department of Conservation (for obvious reasons).

Nydia Track, Marlborough Sounds

Said to be Canterbury’s most climbed peak, the alpine trail begins at Clarence Valley Road carpark and winds its way through native bush, scrub, grassland, and the occasional scree slope. This one requires a good level of fitness and a full day.

Church Bay Circuit, Waiheke Island From Matiatia Wharf, Church Bay Circuit winds south to Matiatia Bay towards Miro and Church Bays before looping back to Oneroa village. The steady, 8km walk takes around three hours to complete, its sometimes-steep climbs rewarded by the plethora of eateries and drinking dens awaiting at Oneroa Village.
