The Strand
VETERINARIAN 114 The Strand, Parnell 09 377 6667 | www.thestrandvet.co.nz
Inside a historic railway shed conversion on The Strand in Parnell, a modern black chandelier dangles over Parisian-boudoir-chic furniture and grand-cru wine boxes packed with gourmet goodies...
... Outside, on the manicured grass of the little inner city park, clients lounge and chat, sipping champagne and nibbling canapés while in the background a jazz band plays. It’s not exactly your average trip to the vet. But at The Strand Vets, they like to do things a little differently. Dr Megan Alderson doesn’t treat her clients to bubbly every day, but her annual ‘Christmas In The Bark’ is a must-see event. Last year, over a hundred people and eighty dogs gathered to be entertained not just by the band, but games, prizes and celebrity MCs Mark Vette and his driving dog, Porter – and the canapés weren’t just for the humans. When Megan set up The Strand Vets three years ago, “I needed to break out of the mould of the traditional vet clinic environment,” she explains. “You know, smelly, a bit depressing, with a sterile hospital feel. I wanted to create a warm, healing, nourishing clinical environment for our animal companions.”
MARCH 2013
No one looking around the clinic could doubt she’s done that. But despite its designer good looks, the beauty of the ‘little clinic with the big heart’ runs more than skin deep. “After twenty years as a vet, I’d had it with the ordinary practice model,” Megan says. “I wanted a place I could enjoy being, where my support staff were proud to work, where my clients enjoyed walking through the door, and where their companion animals felt okay too – a place of mutual trust and respect.” These days, more and more people are demanding the same standard of medical care for their pets that they expect for the rest of their family, and that’s exactly what Megan aims to provide. “Veterinary care of our animal companions in New Zealand has changed a lot in the last three decades. We’ve transitioned from a relationship that was rural in its outlook to one where our dogs and cats are important family members, and I knew the level of medical care had to change too. I needed to work in a clinic where I could feel sure that the animals in my care could access the very best treatment out there. So in the end, I had to build my own.” That included a lab for blood work and cytology, radiology, and a brand new operating theatre designed and equipped with the help of Megan’s husband,
orthopaedic surgeon Dr Alex Walker of the Veterinary Specialist Group, to enable the highest standard of general practitioner care. But for Megan, the clinic had to be a healing environment, too, one where patients felt calm and cared for, and owners could be supported through what are often difficult times. That meant paying attention not just to the latest technology, but to colour, lighting, texture and smell – all part of the holistic values that underpin The Strand Vet’s philosophy. “We look at the whole animal, not just the symptoms,” Megan says, “to achieve optimum wellness and health. It’s about doing what’s best for the patient.” And it’s that philosophy, more so than the annual free bubbly, that has clients travelling from as far afield as Rodney and Clevedon to see vets Megan and Erin, and vet nurses Jolene and Nicole. The approach has also seen the clinic fast become a hub for Auckland’s pet-loving community – whether you need a qualified animal physiotherapist, nutritionist, behaviourist, premium pet-sitting service, designer cat bed or puppy portrait, The Strand is the place to start looking. There’s even a dog-friendly café next door. “We’re complete animal advocates,” Megan smiles. For twenty years she searched for a clinic she could really put her heart into – and at 114 The Strand, it’s beating strong.

Editors’Note Whew, what a month. As we worked on this super-fabulous issue, we simultaneously packed everything in the office for a move round the corner to our new digs on Newmarket’s Broadway. For the most part, things went smoothly – and nothing much had to change: Neither our classy 520 phone numbers (whose very mention evoke images of Auckland’s finest) nor our mailing address. We did though make the mistake of packing away our Editor’s Note idea book, and still have not figured out which shelf this useful prompt has deftly ended up on. Hopefully it will have reappeared by next month. As we go to print though - the one thing everyone is talking about is the amazing weather we have been enjoying – New Zealand’s own spin on an Indian summer. So whereas normally the air assumes a different quality as we head into autumn, slightly crisper with skies more blue – this year is different, special in an unforgettable way.
VerveMagazine —
We have done our best to make this issue of Verve as memorable as the weather: Filled with new season style, articles written from the heart, and glorious images for your eyes to feast upon, including of course the delightful cover shot. What fun we had shooting Megan Alderson – The Strand Veterinarian, and 3 of her pooch patients. They were the centre of attention and of course stole everyone’s hearts. So without more ado we invite you to dive in, explore and be inspired by the compelling pages of Verve March. As always we welcome your comments (see email addresses below). Enjoy autumn! Until next month. Jude and Fran

What do the colour green, a bonnet and the Virgin Mary have in common?
Easter Eggs Words: Julien Erwin
Green is the colour of new foliage emerging after a long, dead winter and to celebrate the coming of spring Christians of the Eastern Orthodox Church dyed Easter eggs green. Some eggs were dyed red, the colour of blood, in honour of the blood shed by Christ when he was sacrificed. The exact origin of the tradition of dyeing eggs is unknown but it is thought to have begun during the 13th century. To this day many members of the Eastern Orthodox Church carry on the tradition of decorating and painting eggs at Easter time. During the Lenten season, Catholics were forbidden to eat eggs so when it was time to break the fast numerous eggs were elaborately decorated and consumed marking the end of the penance and fasting. German Protestants, who did not subscribe to the Catholic practice of fasting but wanted to retain the association between Easter and eggs, conceived the idea of an egg-laying hare – the “Osterhase” that became the forefather of the now beloved Easter Bunny. Bonnets and caps were used by the children of German immigrants in the Pennsylvania Dutch area of the USA to create nests in which the Easter hare could lay its eggs.
the hare was a hermaphrodite and could therefore reproduce without the loss of virginity. Many illuminated manuscripts and Northern European paintings of the Virgin Mary and her Christ Child contain depictions of hares. In some instances hares are linked to the Holy Trinity through illustrations of the three hares motif. Both hares and rabbits breed in abundance and produce several litters annually. Female hares are often carrying a second litter while still pregnant with the first! It is no wonder that these prolific breeders came to be associated with fertility and their coupling at springtime was woven into Easter folklore. In the Bible there is no mention of the fluffy-tailed, long-eared rabbit we have come to know and celebrate as the Easter Bunny. Despite this, the loveable creature has become an integral part of Christian Easter celebrations and eager children wait for the Easter Bunny to reward them for being good by placing eggs and other sweets in their nests. Today over 90 million chocolate bunnies are sold at Easter.
The “Osterhase” morphed into the Easter Bunny, colourful baskets replaced the makeshift nests in the bonnets and caps and the Easter Bunny was often depicted wearing clothes. The egg treats that the Easter Bunny left expanded to include marshmallow chicks, jelly beans, a variety of candies and eggs made of chocolate.
The largest Easter egg ever constructed was made out of chocolate and marshmallow and weighed over 3628kg. A steel frame was used to support the egg that was over 7.62 metres high.
The connection between the Virgin Mary and Easter eggs is the belief promulgated by such ancients as Pliny and Plutarch, that

Where Fashion Meets Function Auckland-based designer Matt Nash creates handmade bags with a vintage twist.
Words: Sara Bunny
While he wasn’t overly thrilled with the strawberry pincushion he made in 5th form sewing, designer Matt Nash’s schoolage experiments with a needle and thread eventually led him to a career in fashion. “I did a bit of sewing early on at school but then didn’t sew again for a few years,” he says. “I was always into design and arts as a little kid and my family are very practical, so I think I got both the practical and creative sides. After school I looked at doing either architecture or fashion.” Fashion won out and Matt completed a fashion design degree at AUT in 2009, and honours two years later. While studying, he worked at Auckland menswear mecca Crane Brothers, creating made-to-measure shirts and designing for the brand’s Little Brother range. With menswear his chosen focus, he used his honours year at uni to hone his skills into the niche area of bags. From his home studio, every bag is carefully crafted and sewn by the designer himself. With meticulous attention to detail, “a nod to utilitarian and historic men’s workwear”, and a focus on function as well as fashion, Matt’s most recent collections are made from robust 14-ounce canvas imported from Australia.
“Each bag is an evolution of one I have made before,” he says. “I have a few central ideas I stick to. I work out problems as I go along, and in a way, each bag gets more refined. I really like working with heavy fabrics.” His creations include backpack and satchel designs, and are sold at Simon James Concept Store in Herne Bay and through his website. Although the styles and colours vary, each and every bag has one thing in common – a small New Zealand pre-decimal coin sewn into the pocket for luck. When a family friend gifted his coin collection to Matt’s mother, the precious metal was in turn given to Matt and remains a favourite possession. Duplicates and extras from the prized collection are included in the bags, and the coins have become a central theme of his work.
“It’s from an old wives’ tale,” he says. “Wallets were sold with a coin for good luck. The old coins are beautiful and make a nice conversation piece.” Current projects for Matt include a collaboration with his cousin, former cricketer Dion Nash, where he is designing a bag to complement Dion’s men’s grooming range, Triumph & Disaster. He is also sampling a full leather range as well as working on bespoke designs, which he especially enjoys. “It’s fun to sit down with people and design something especially for them. It seems men and women are always on the hunt for the elusive perfect bag.” For more info see mattnash.co.nz

MARCH 2013
19
Lucy and Stephen Marr are well-known faces of hair and beauty in Auckland. Their businesses are known for great customer service, as well as pushing the creative envelope. Always experimenting and looking for new opportunities, they now have three Stephen Marr hair salons and two Lucy and the Powder Rooms and cater to NZ's fashion elite, as well as a loyal customer base throughout Auckland. Their latest venture is The Dressing Room (located alongside Lucy and the Powder Room at The Department Store in Takapuna ), an intimate retail space that showcases a careful edit of lingerie and intimates for the modern woman. Verve caught up with Stephen and Lucy the other day and they shared insights into their businesses, what drives and inspires them.
V: What inspired Stephen to open the salons and Lucy to open The Powder Room? S + L: Because of the business names, it’s perceived that Stephen does this, Lucy does that. But really we have a pretty unique collaboration across all businesses and set up all three salons together, starting with Ponsonby in 1999 and then the Powder Room came later. Our inspiration came from meeting and realising that we could make an amazing business together. V: And now you have The Dressing Room – how did that come about? S + L: Our business is all about communication, and we really hear a lot about what people like and don't like in fashion. Over time we really got the sense that buying lingerie wasn't a great experience for many: the boutique experience just wasn't there for that product and the selection was quite poor. Lucy knew this too, from personal experience! We knew many brands were making great products, especially local brands. We have an amazing space within Lucy and the Powder Room, and we saw an opportunity to showcase a new collection here. V: The Dressing Room is located within Lucy and the Powder Room at The Department Store in Takapuna? Why is this? S + L: The space was designed by our friend and collaborator Katie Lockhart. It's calm, bright, beautiful - the perfect place to indulge the senses. We also saw that there's amazing synergy between the industryleading beauty products on offer we have at the Powder Room and the beautiful selection of lingerie. Because the edit is good, our clients at the Powder Room love The Dressing Room, and vice versa. V: How did you choose the brands that would feature? S + L: We have the good fortune to work with many of the amazing brands NZ has through the salon and Powder Room. When it came time to select product, we knew who to call. The ranges are so amazing, so it was exciting for us to showcase local talent and it's lovely to work with these companies on a different level. We don't stock anything
and everything - The Dressing Room will always be a really personal, highly curated edit for the modern woman. V: The selection seems quite vintage, with lots of soft-cup bras and slips. Is this a new trend in lingerie? S + L: There is a return to the more vintage-looking styles, but it has been led largely by the consumer. Women want to be comfortable. They want natural, yet indulgent fabrics and detailing. Mostly, they want to celebrate their body shape, whether they are busty or almost boobless! We have sought to have a range of styles that work to make you feel incredibly sexy in your own shape, whether that's with a soft-cup or an underwire bra, or a knee-length silk slip. And our staff are amazing at fitting. V: Your businesses espouse a philosophy of beauty and looking good. Can you tell us about this? S + L: Laugh and love as much as you can. Be grateful and work on being a happy person. It will really result in how you look and feel. Other than that, we all know, everything in moderation! V: Is there anyone who you would consider to be your inspiration? S + L: We have been in the fortunate position to connect with many inspiring people through our business, many are clients. We've learned a lot about multiple businesses and personalities, and many of these people have given us guidance and support along the way. For that we really value them.
Top: The Dressing Room
focus on education and strive to offer a super supportive environment for people to learn and grow. We also try and make it fun. We feel like we are all lucky to be doing what we love, and this shows in the work we do and how it's delivered to our clients.
V: What is you own particular favourite hairstyle / style / trend of all time?
V: Tell us about some of the biggest challenges you have faced running your own businesses?
S + L: There are so many options, but you can tell when people are wearing a style or the style is wearing them – it's most important to be comfortable in your own skin. That's our philosophy across hair / make-up / fashion…you need to feel good to look good.
S + L: Anyone will tell you owning your own business is very hard work, especially balancing life with a young family. The economy has affected consumer choices for many businesses, and we need to be nimble to respond to this. We do so by focusing on service and quality.
V: How do you ensure that your salons always deliver a quality product?
V: The best part of having about having your own business?
S + L: We have an amazing team, and always work on recruiting only the best. When they're working with us, we really

There’s Something About Mary With determined step and steely gaze, she opens the door to the shop and surveys the scene. The stock is tired, the shelves are a mess, the window display is stuck in the 70’s and the assistant is busy gossiping with her girlfriends and ignoring the customers. Retail expert Mary Portas has been called in by the hapless shop owners to bring the store back from the brink, and she doesn’t mince words. “It’s a real shame this shop is so awful. It’s like a dirty old swingers’ party, isn’t it? I don’t mean to be cruel but it’s pathetically bad.” On her hit BBC series Mary Queen of Shops, she aims to help storeowners rather than harass them, but of course the footage is edited for maximum bitch factor. “I can be very direct, and sometimes I come across as horrible in the edit, but what they haven’t shown is the back story”, she said in an interview with The Guardian. “There have been times when people have written that I’ve been harsh, and I really don’t like that.” While some of her home truths may be a bitter pill for retailers to swallow, she is better placed to dish it out than most. Mary, 52, has more than 30 years of experience in all things retailrelated, as well as her own successful brand communication business, Portas, through which she manages high-profile campaigns for the likes of Louis Vuitton and Swarovski. After the success of Mary Queen of Shops, she went on to star in Mary Portas: Secret Shopper, where she went undercover in big UK chain stores to film their shocking customer service. Things have become so bad, she says, that she finds going into 80% of British high street stores a harrowing experience.
Top: Mary Portas
“I walk round going, ‘I hate this, I hate this!’ It makes me want to just cry with depression. I went into [UK department chain] Homebase and actually thought I was going to kill myself.”
Over the past few years, Mary’s personal life has been hitting the headlines, too. After leaving her husband of 13 years for a woman, Mary married her partner Melanie Rickey, fashion editor-at-large for Grazia magazine, in 2011.
And she’s obviously not alone. Recently she was commissioned by British prime minister David Cameron to write a report on the state of the country’s high streets. The lengthy report makes 28 recommendations on how English cities can revitalise their failing central shopping areas and encourage customers away from the malls and online shopping sites.
This year, Mary is on a new fashion mission. She has just created a sexy underwear range called Kinky Knickers, and if the social media reports are anything to go by, British shoppers can’t get enough of them. “No word of a lie,” tweeted one fan, “those are the comfiest, most flattering pants my bum has ever had the pleasure of wearing.”

If you don’t get good service you are effectively being ripped off. Remember, it’s part of the margin built into the ticket price. If you’re not being served, walk out. These shops won’t improve their standard of service until their sales figures give them reason to. Wear flat shoes and jeans so you are as comfortable as possible when you’re pounding the pavements. Verve Interviews Marilyn McLaughlan New Zealand fashion doyenne, Marilyn McLaughlan, who designs under the name Marilyn Seyb, met with Verve just hours before departing on her bi-annual buying / styling trip, a journey that will take her round the globe and to many of the world’s main fashion centres in a mere few weeks. Though her life is led at a hectic pace, Marilyn exudes an air of warmth and calm, feathers never ruffled, it seems. AAnd, like any person who has made a great success of a business, this elegant, refined woman works tirelessly on her ranges, passionate in the extreme about her labels and the style and quality they represent to countless Australasian women. Marilyn knows the importance of a good work-life balance, rejoices in spending time with her precious family including a wee granddaughter. When she is not working you will find her at one of her stunning homes, either in Christchurch, Auckland or Bali. Here (amongst other things) she loves to cook, conjuring up fresh and fabulous dishes for friends and relatives, or perhaps out in the garden, bonding with nature. She answered the following questions for Verve readers.
V: How long have you been in the clothing trade, and how and where did you start? M: Over 3 decades! It all started off with a man! I met John in 1977 and by 1979 we were married. By 1979 we were working closely with Kimberleys in Christchurch, which was purely retail at this stage. We were buying product in to sell it in the store. In the 90s, after we had begun manufacturing, we felt we needed a greater network for our product, and so we started to expand, and now have four distributors that sell the collection throughout Australasia
V: Take us through the range generation process. M: Inspiration for styles and fabric come from all over and are usually pulled together in Hong Kong where ideas are tied down to sketches and swatches. We do four ranges each season - Marilyn Seyb, Marilyn Seyb Jeune, Episode, and Marilyn Seyb Glamour. As far as fabric goes, 70% of our ranges is knitwear and the rest is made from silks, cotton and natural fine blends. We are starting an active range soon called Jeune Active with yummy walking / boating clothes.
V: Best selling style ever? M: A cotton cardigan with a Cornelli (lace) design. This style sold so well and gave us the confidence to forge ahead.
V: Always generating new designs can at times be difficult as one can run out of creative juices / inspiration, etc. How do you get your ideas? M: Ideas just come; they float in the air. If you are design-oriented you draw inspiration from everything – conversation, old ideas from long ago, colour and the combination thereof, places I am in, things I see, like a tropical flower or bird – or seeing something someone else has done, like a painting for instance. Like other labels, we shop for samples overseas – from which we also draw inspiration then adapt, restyle, and refabricate for the Australasian market.
V: Your favourite designer/s? M: The Belgian designer Dries van Noten, and Marni (Italian). The way they mix colour palettes and print inspires me always, and if I was not in the industry – these are the collections I would want to buy. They have now diversified into shoes and handbags, which are equally inspiring.
V: What have you loved best about your chosen career path? M: I love it the most and hate it the most because it is forever changing. It is like starting a new business twice a year, which keeps me thinking and keeps me forward, but of course at times can be quite stressful. There are lots of plusses and minuses – however the plusses
V: Briefly outline the Marilyn Seyb / Kimberleys progression. M:1977. First Kimberleys retail store opens 1979. Marry John and continue working closely as a couple until he retired last year. 1990s. Started expanding out of Christchurch, where we had four stores. Opened stores in Dunedin and Wellington. Opened three stores in Auckland. Started manufacturing.
always outweigh the minuses. I love it that I have four really well established ranges. What a gift! V: Advice to youngsters and others just getting into the trade. M: Don’t expect to start at the top. Work your way through. Do a stint in retail to understand the customer, and be prepared to work hard. It is an allencompassing career because you live and breathe it; you are either all-in or allout and because it moves so quickly you have to be totally focused. There is too much competition out there, to sit back and take it easy. V: If you had your career over again, is there anything you would change? M: I would always be involved in design, anything tactile and to do with colour and fabrication. even if it was interior design. I nearly became a dental nurse – imagine that! Everything works out for a reason. V: Outside of work – what are your favourite ways to spend time? M: Having a massage in my Bali home then walking two metres to a deck chair and settling with a good book. I love fishing and cooking the fish that I catch (I love to cook and entertain). I love gardening so long as I can smell the roses and not see the weeds below!

At Signature Style female clients outnumber males by almost 10-1, but we absolutely love working with men. I’m not sure if it’s the change in scenery; looking at menswear and heading to menswear stores etc., or whether it’s just the different way a man will view his style.
in ensuring our clients have a fabulous time while getting the results they want. While the outcome is a delighted client, in getting there sometimes we have to discard some truly fabulous outfits. These women simply don’t believe they look good and that is a real shame.
The key difference is that men are usually far more pragmatic with style than women. A bloke will take a “this is who I am, make me look good and make this easy” approach, making a shopping trip an exercise in getting what he needs and what works for him. This extends to garment choices too, with a bloke usually only purchasing something he feels comfortable in. Nowhere is this more evident than in a shoe shop, where if the shoes don’t feel like slippers – he’s not buying them. We women however will expect our footwear to ‘soften up’, ‘stretch’ and become more comfortable after we ‘break them in’ – a completely foreign concept to a male.
When I speak to groups of women I will implore them to “cultivate your inner bloke”. What I mean is to stop obsessing about what doesn’t look so great, and start accepting yourself more. It is most unlikely you will ever hear of a man sitting on his bed and crying “I can’t go, I look terrible in these shorts!” but many women will play out this scene often.
Contrast this with so many women who compare themselves to other women (often unattainable stereotypes). Although we make these gals look and feel amazing, we can be working against constant self-criticism. We pride ourselves
Yes, style is working with what God gave you, playing up the good bits and playing down the not so good, but true style comes with confidence, and disliking yourself will undermine that. Let’s give ourselves a break and try a little love. Jackie O’Fee is owner of Signature Style, Auckland’s leading style consultancy. STYLE THROUGH THE AGES
MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER: Proenza Schouler rules. Incredible fabrics, perfect shapes. Always fresh. Out of my price range at present though!
THE SCENT I WILL BE WEARING THIS WINTER:
Vivienne Westwood Boudoir. I’m not really one for girly flowery perfumes – this one is all womannn.
20s
MY MOST COVETED PIECE OF CLOTHING THIS SEASON: Tights in less ordinary colours - navy, chocolate, taupe, grey marle. Sometimes black doesn’t cut it! BZRshop on Etsy does some beautiful graduated tights. You can get a really cool effect layering sheers over opaques too.
KATE FOWLER After almost three years working as a suit in the ad world I’m packing up my worldly belongings and catching a one-way flight out of here..! Some of my first stops will include Coachella, Mexico and NYC - then on to Europe where I’ll be doing stints on the yachts and a ski season in France. Can’t say I won’t miss New Zealand though - I’ll be back!
MY FAVOURITE FASHION ACCESSORY: Mum’s gold belt from the eighties belt is my go-to. Goes with everything. Also makes a great neckpiece.
BEAUTY PRODUCT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: Lipstick in blush tones. Super versatile - I wear it on my eyes and as blush as well the usual way. Easy on the pockets too!
STYLE THROUGH THE AGES
MY MOST COVETED PIECE OF CLOTHING THIS SEASON: This new Into the Void romper by Penny Sage. It’s so retro, futuristic and supremely modern… I can’t wait to wear this, this season. I’m obsessed!
BEAUTY PRODUCT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: Everything from NZ skincare brand Antipodes! It’s all heavenly.
MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER: NZ designer Penny Sage. Her pieces are modern, strong and fun!
THE SCENT I WILL BE WEARING THIS WINTER: Balenciaga Paris. It reminds me of my grandmother Gloria... it smells of violets and biscuits and a different age.
30s KRISTINE CRABB Miss Crabb is a New Zealand fashion brand, established in 2004, designed and directed by Kristine Crabb. The aesthetic sensibilities of the brand lie somewhere between a pared-back minimalist beauty and a darker romanticism. The pieces themselves have a naturalness and an enduring classicism to them: this combination of delicacy and strength allows for the versatility of the pieces intended to move with the wearer, wherever the day may take her. Kristine Crabb lives in Auckland, with her partner, NZ artist Andrew Barber and their three young children.
FAVOURITE DESIGN The Neoclassicism - is probably one of the simplest pieces I have ever designed. I love how Emma Gleason of Rag Pony looks so radiant and timeless in this picture. It’s so beautiful, and not even trying.
MY FAVOURITE FASHION ACCESSORY: I’m really loving my Curio Noir Feather My Tears candle. It’s so summery and moody and makes our home smell a bit like a 19th century boudoir. This summer has been particularly special - lots of family time, creative time and beautiful, long hot days; it’s a transformative dream!
STYLE THROUGH THE AGES
MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER: Karen Walker, hands down. Yes, she doesn’t design for men (not clothes at least) but her ideas are brilliant and her and her team are a constant source of inspiration that makes me strive to stay ahead of the curve.
THE SCENT I WILL BE WEARING THIS WINTER: I have about 15 colognes, and my favourites are Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot, Issey Miyake Noir Absolu, and both Escentric and Molecule. They’re sophisticated and not too heady. I like to smell fresh and crisp.
BEAUTY PRODUCT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT:
MY MOST COVETED PIECE OF CLOTHING THIS SEASON:
My Sans Hair Wash (from Lucy & The Powder Room) and my Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Moisturiser. They’re great staples that I can rely on and they make washing up very easy!
I’ve been searching for a Colette Ski Club Beanie for weeks – they sold out within days on the colette. com e-shop! Locally I love the new footwear by I Love Ugly, and a new suit from Topman at The Department Store, or a tailored suit from Working Style would be just fine!
30s MURRAY BEVAN Showroom 22 is a name that has become synonymous with fashion PR, marketing and events in New Zealand since its inception in 2002. Its director Murray Bevan steers a roster of more than 20 brands - all leaders in their category - into the very best media, and has helped some of the country’s newest designer names hit their stride.
MY FAVOURITE FASHION ACCESSORY: Probably my iPhone 5, followed closely by my brown double-monk strap shoes from Barneys New York. I learnt a while ago that a man doesn’t need a huge wardrobe, they just need good essentials. I can count on these two items day after day.
STYLE THROUGH THE AGES
MY MOST COVETED PIECE OF CLOTHING THIS SEASON: My Lululemon tank tops. They are really comfortable and remind me that I must keep doing Pilates as they are very unforgiving. I love workout clothes that are practical but make the most of your body type.
THE SCENT I WILL BE WEARING THIS WINTER: Calvin Klein, I have worn it for about 15 years. I met my wife wearing it. She loves it, so it stays.
BEAUTY PRODUCT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: My toothbrush. I was always told from a young age about oral hygiene.
MY FAVOURITE FASHION ACCESSORY: My Rolex. Lorna gave it to me on my 40th birthday. I have already told my son I will pass it down to him on his 21st birthday; he’s only 6 - so I have time.
40s JASON RICHARDSON Tennis has been a big part of my life. I played pro for a few years then coached tennis in Hong Kong for 10 years. I met my wife Lorna (British), when she needed a date on a trip to Hong Kong. She must have thought I looked ok, because she booked a tennis lesson and seduced me on court number 9. We have two beautiful kids, a son (6) and a daughter (9). Favourite saying: “You can make money or you can make excuses, but you can’t make both.”
MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER: Since I am in the health and fitness industry I wear fitness clothes 90 per cent of the time. I love Nike for shoes, Lululemon for working out and my Hugo Boss suit for going out!
STYLE THROUGH THE AGES
MY MOST COVETED PIECE OF CLOTHING THIS SEASON: Do shoes count as clothing? I love fabulous leather boots (ankle or knee high), both the flat and highheeled variety – in black, stone, tan, or donkey. They make any outfit special. Ankle boots by Saint Laurent
THE SCENT I WILL BE WEARING THIS WINTER: Anything from the Marc Jacobs – Splash Collection: Biscotti, Cucumber, or Pomegranate – I enjoy them all. The plainness of the bottles and the lightness of the fragrances makes me feel happy. They remind me of a beautiful rambling summer garden.
Donna Karan Fall 2013
MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER: Gosh, it is hard to pick a favourite – I have so many. However two unerring favourites throughout my life have been Donna Karan and Marimekko. Donna Karan: I love her for her under-statedness, drape, quality and the fact that she is timeless. Marimekko has always been fun, frivolous, fabulous and different.
50s FRAN NINOW Together with Jude Mitchell, Fran Ninow is editor of Verve Magazine. She has always enjoyed design and creativity, and feels privileged to be able to work on a publication like Verve. Married, and mother to two sons, she is loving being in her 50s. “I hate the outwards signs of age,” she says, “but really enjoy what goes on inside my head, a lot better.”
MY FAVOURITE FASHION ACCESSORY: A pair of diamond stud earrings. They work with any outfit and always look good - no matter what. Earrings by Spectrum
BEAUTY PRODUCT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: Sunscreen. If I had my time over I would use sunscreen religiously every day, as I started doing in my late 40s. Lancôme’s Bienfait UV SPF 50+
STYLE THROUGH THE AGES
BEAUTY PRODUCT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: Antipodes face cream. I love all Antipodes products. They have a face cream in a tube that is less than 100mls that I can take on the plane, which makes it light to travel with. They have a fabulous lipstick as well.
MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER:
THE SCENT I WILL BE WEARING THIS WINTER: I don’t wear perfume – but I do like to pick nice smelling flowers and wear in my hair. Image: Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace, Frida Kahlo 1940
Nicola Waite. She creates clothing that I really like, that I feel great in and is for me very practical. I can mix and match, it’s easy for travelling so I can pack lightly, and much of it I could wear on a plane or a train, to a garden party or to the opera.
60s CARLA VAN ZON Carla van Zon is the Artistic Director of Auckland Arts Festival and is responsible for overseeing the Festival’s performance, music and visual arts programmes. She holds an MA from George Washington University in the USA, and has a broad range of professional experience in the arts, both in New Zealand and internationally. MY FAVOURITE FASHION ACCESSORY: I am a jewellery person, and have a big collection of rings, earrings, bracelets and various necklaces. Light to carry and you can change your look in an instant. A few favourites are my Rangi Kipa orange tiki, my orange watch, some prayer beads that I bought in Vietnam and a selection of glass earrings from Venice in a range of colours.
MY MOST COVETED PIECE OF CLOTHING THIS SEASON: A pair of red Arche heels. A small heel looks great and is extremely comfortable. And a pair of orange and lime green shorts made by a friend from some 1950s curtains. Image: Vintage suede French Arche boots

New-Season Collection Arrives in Store Nicola Waite Autumn/Winter collection arrives exclusively at the Nicola Waite Newmarket store. Interesting and easily worn pieces in exquisite richly coloured fabrics can be worn as standalone pieces or paired with feminine sheers that add arm cover and glamorous length. Fabulous, winter-essential, fine-wool pieces will arrive in store early March in great, new, innovative styles. Nicola Waite is known for her beautiful fabrication and classicwith-a-quirky-twist (often humorous) handwriting that appeals to all ages, and looks equally great on all that wear it, wherever they may be from a size 8 to 22. Nicola also sources very interesting accessories from some great European designers that work amazingly well with the collection to create an even more interesting and individual look. Much of the success of the Nicola Waite label (four stores in Australia and one in New Zealand) is attributed to New Zealander Nicola Waite’s past career as an international opera singer, during which time she learnt much from great costumiers on how to create interesting shapes that are both comfortable and flattering. The desire to apply this to her own size 16/18 and 180cm stature and create something with personality and innovative style led to the birth of the Nicola Waite label some 10 years ago. Red Hot Amanda Betts of Red11 on loss, determination, and grabbing life’s opportunities. Words: Sara Bunny
MARCH 2013
For Amanda Betts and Mandy Jacobsen, co-owners of successful model and talent agency Red11, it was family tragedy that spurred both women on to business success.
Amanda came up with the agency’s name, “red because it is a powerful colour…it seems urgent, like we mean business. Eleven because it is a master number and means ‘name in lights and prosperity’. And that was it. Ironically, we later stumbled on the fact it is a pool ball as well.”
Amanda was reeling from the loss of her beloved grandmother, and Mandy was looking for a project to throw her energy into after losing her father. Mandy got the project started and when Amanda received the phone call, she jumped at the chance to come on board at the fledgling Red11. Through determination, drive and a shared sense of grief, a solid and unstoppable business partnership was born. It was her grandmother, whom Amanda describes as “a shining light in my life”, that encouraged her as a 17-year-old to do a modelling course, during which she landed a $5000 job with lingerie company Fayreform. “I didn’t want to do the course but after that job I thought, ‘hey, maybe I can do this!’” After two happy years of fulltime modelling, she gave it up to pursue work on the other side of the industry - model booking and management. With a goal to one day own her own agency, she immersed herself in education, charity work and a job at Clyne Model Management before joining Mandy at Red11. Looking back, she is justifiably proud of her achievements. “I owned my own agency at 37, not bad for someone who left school at the end of the fourth form.” These days her schedule is always hectic, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. There are seven staff at Red11 plus two dogs, Harry and Monty. The canines also know the industry well, having modelled for the likes of German GQ and M2 magazines, as well as the latest Rodney Wayne campaign. The company manages a range of people over two divisions: model and talent. The talent sector is for people looking to work in TV or commercials, and the most regularly-booked talent star at the agency is a 50-year-old guy Amanda met while out walking Monty. “With talent, it’s not just about looks. It’s people who have a way about them. A warmth and honesty that makes you feel good about them.”
This page: Holly-Rose Emery (top) Amanda Betts modelling at 19 years old (bottom)
Agency modelling stars include Holly-Rose Emery, the current face of Nom*D, who bravely turned her life around by losing 36 kilograms. Anmari Botha is another young talent who, after joining Red11 at 14, is now making waves overseas as a successful 19-year-old model. Amanda advises aspiring models to learn about the industry, be sensible with nutrition and keep school or university a focus. Most of all, models should be opportunists. “Take any opportunities you get because if you don’t, there’s ten people behind you who will.”

BEAUTY & HEALTH
THE PURSUIT OF YOUTHFUL LOOKING SKIN The rise of medically-inclined appearance treatments means ‘looking good’ has never been easier. The majority of appearance medicine clients get their first touch of enhancement to address a problem that’s bothered them for a long time. It might be dermal fillers to enhance the lips, Botox® to reduce the deep wrinkles between their eyebrows, eyelid surgery to remove excess skin, laser treatment to get rid of facial pigmentation and broken capillaries. Botox® is a treatment that relaxes the muscles into which it is placed. Botox® injections are used to soften wrinkles, balance asymmetry, slim the jawline, lift the brow and correct a droopy smile, therefore giving a more refreshed look.
folds that run diagonally between the sides of the nose and corners of mouth, is a popular shortcut to a more youthful appearance. Fat loss in the deeper layers of the face will cause the face to age and can be re-plumped with dermal fillers with minimal discomfort or time. Fillers will help correct dark circles and hollows under the eye by camouflaging depressions and darkness. The tops of the hands can also be rejuventated using fillers.

MARCH 2013
HOW LONG IS LONG ENOUGH? Give it a chance. That’s what everyone says, and I believe it’s a solid motto. The question though is how long you give something a chance before you make a decision on whether or not it’s working for you. My name is Sasha Madarasz – I run Two’s Company, an introduction agency for busy singles. A partner should be your walking stick that you sometimes lean on and sometimes carry. If they’ve become your weighteddown backpack, then it’s time to reconsider the adventure trail you’ve chosen. The person you choose as your everlasting lover will have attributes that make you swoon and will also have flaws that make you want to stab them with a pencil. That’s life. Yin/ yang. Day/night. Everything has something and nothing, so again, you must decide what “nothings” you’re able to swallow, and what “nothings” you simply cannot handle as a staple in your life.
I believe the best way to approach this debacle is with patience and instinct. As adults, we know first impressions aren’t always correct. Be patient. Go on a second and third date. Take your blinders off. Break up with tunnel vision. Obviously what you’ve been doing in the past hasn’t worked out for you, or you wouldn’t find yourself searching for the “right one”. You’re trying to figure it out, and so is the person across from you. You must take this into consideration and be gentle with your judgments. When you are ready to do this, call me. I have a pool of stellar singles ready for you to dip your polished dating toe into. Your love life awaits you. For more information about Two’s Company visit our website, www.twoscompany.co.nz, or email sasha@twoscompany.co.nz.

This task is easier said than done. I’ve watched people react too quickly to someone’s flaws, refusing a second a date based on someone’s jeans or shoes. I’ve also seen many pull an ostrich act by burying their heads in the sand to a relationship issue they knew was disastrous from week one of dating. Neither of these tactics is admirable.

Breathing Space Yoga Group Yoga cooperative offering the best in Iyengar and Hatha traditions
DELWYN UNKOVICH I have been practising yoga for over 20 years and teaching for over 15. During this time, I have had the privilege of training with the Iyengar family and other senior teachers from around the world. For the past 10 years, I have operated Breathing Space Yoga Studio in Newmarket, offering private classes and lessons in my custom-designed studio. In 2012, prompted by passing a more senior Iyengar Teaching Certificate and by being approached by Vincent Bolletta, who was looking for a space in the area to work in, I decided to form a yoga cooperative. The concept of sharing a yoga space with a group of dedicated teachers has naturally attracted others and will hopefully continue to do so. At this stage we are able to offer a timetable in both the Iyengar and Hatha traditions for students of all levels. In addition to this I am running a Beginners’ Iyengar Course that starts on Thursday 21 March. See timetable below. Phone bookings essential. Yoga has been an essential part of who I am, for a long time and I cannot imagine my life without it. I look forward to sharing my passion for the art of yoga and what it brings.
VINCENT BOLLETTA Vincent has been teaching and practicing yoga since 1990. AApart from being founder and director of Yogashala, an Auckland studio dedicated to teaching yoga movement therapy*, he also runs also runs private retreats, workshops and teacher training programmes locally and abroad. In conjunction with Yogashala, Vincent is also a principle teacher at Yoga Ground. Vincent brings knowledge, experience and an approach that is based on exploration and play. His belief is that the practice of yoga must be adaptable, relevant and aimed to cater for all learning styles and abilities so that the most effective practice can be developed. In his spare time, Vincent is a family man (wife and 2 children) and indulges in his love of yoga photography. *Yoga meets dance

BARBARA BAIRD
STEPHANIE ANDERSON
The yoga seed was planted by my mother in my teens when she took me to yoga classes at the local hall. I continued home practice through my 20s then ventured into Iyengar yoga classes whilst pregnant with my third child.
I began yoga in 2000 while I was completing a diploma in therapeutic massage and neuromuscular therapy at The NZ College of Massage. For me, it was a natural progression to train to teach yoga as there were so many benefits that I was able to integrate into my massage treatment plans and homecare. I have now been teaching for 11 years and am a certified Iyengar yoga teacher.
In 2002, wishing to further my yoga knowledge, I began yoga teacher training. 9 years ago, I was asked to teach. Until late 2012 I have been teaching at Herne Bay Yoga as well as private groups and individuals in the community. I also teach a men’s group. The men in my class enjoy the many benefits, for instance, flexibility increased, stress reduced and awareness of both breath and bodies improved. Being a fully trained nurse and having a number of physical injuries has provided me with a good understanding of the human body. The most important thing I have learned through teaching and selfpractice is that it is essential to honour the difference in my students. In 2012 I passed Iyengar Level 2 Intro Certification. Yoga for me has been the greatest gift alongside the privilege of being a mother to 3 gorgeous boys.
I am mother to 3 children and during my pregnancies my yoga practice was invaluable, and I do my utmost to carry this knowledge and understanding through when teaching pregnant women or pregnancy classes. Yoga has taught me to be more present in my body and in the moment, to be patient with myself and others, to not react so quickly to things physical or emotional and that the breath can change things in an instant when focused on and done correctly. 30’s
60+
If you don’t already have a skincare routine – start right now! Using the right products for your skin will help combat the first signs of ageing and ensure a lifetime of good habits. A good cleanser, toner, gentle exfoliator and moisturiser needn’t cost the earth, and a simple routine can make a significant difference. Invest in a good eye cream to hydrate the delicate eye area, and use an SPF that doesn’t clog your skin. Reflect sunscreen by Aspect is a light mist to protect your skin with SPF30, but light enough not to clog pores or leave a shine. It also has anti-oxidants to protect your skin. A course of peels is an effective way to instantly brighten and decongest your skin, make it less blotchy and reactive, and help fight ageing.
40’s You start to see signs of pigmentation and dehydration. Pigmentation starts to surface years or even decades after the sun damage – a scary thought. If you are prone to pigment, using a product that inhibits production of pigment in the skin over summer - like Aspect’s Pigment Punch – will stop pigmentation in its tracks.
Catalyst Plus by Osmosis is another product that dramatically reduces pigment in the skin, while improving elasticity and fighting the signs of ageing. Treatments like microdermabrasion lift pigment and stimulate collagen. Start using serums like Vitamin C, which is a powerful anti-oxidant, and a product with Vitamin A or Retinol.
50’s Collagen loss due to hormonal changes is a big challenge in this decade. The neck is also prone to showing wear and tear: the skin is thinner than facial skin and has a different collagen count. It is also one of the most sun-exposed parts of the body, especially vulnerable to UVA / UVB damage. The good news is that treatments like Microtone (non-surgical facelift) can improve muscle tone, lifting and firming the skin. IPL (intense pulsed light) is particularly effective for skin rejuvenation, as well as treating pigmentation, broken capillaries, and improving pores and fine lines.
Regular treatments are the key to keeping skin glowing and healthy. Hydrating facials will plump and stimulate the skin, and address concerns as they arise. Nourishing and intensive repair creams help maintain moisture levels in the skin – along with prescription-level skincare packed with anti-ageing vitamins. Supplements such as Krill Oil are essential to build the skin and feed it with nourishing oils from within. Natural oils such as olive oil and avocado also play a major role in maintaining skin elasticity. As cell turnover slows down, regular exfoliation will brighten the skin and keep it feeling smooth. Treatments such as dermal rolling are excellent for stimulating collagen and improving skin texture. At Finesse our selection of advanced treatments mean that we can improve your skin significantly - whatever your age and whatever your skin concerns may be. We pride ourselves on having many happy clients who keep returning to us year after year. We establish a close working relationship to help you maintain a beautiful skin for a lifetime.

Meet Parnell Surgeon: Dr Michael Klaassen MBChB(Otago), FRACS (Plast) in history, we better understand the aging process - which allows us to use more refined and less aggressive techniques for facial rejuvenation,” he says. The eyelids: The upper eyelid is a key priority because we communicate with our eyes. “The upper eyelid crease should be well defined to maintain / restore a youthful contour. A minimalist surgical procedure to define the upper lid crease, can be performed under local anaesthetic in the surgery.”
With that in mind, we went along to see Dr Michael Klaassen at Parnell Surgeon. It’s a down-to-earth, casual, non-intimidating but professional suite of rooms on Parnell Road.
The cheeks and jawline: This is the second most important priority in Dr Klaassen’s approach to tailored facial rejuvenation. The lower eyelid / cheek junction is particularly relevant to the early signs of aging. “We aim to lift the the cheeks and jowls subtly, reversing the tendency to sag as we age. A combination of soft tissue lifting and volume enhancement is our goal.” This can be achieved in 3 hours of surgery in a day-stay hospital facility in Epsom. “You go home at the end of the day,” says Dr Klaassen.
Dr Klaassen no longer offers Botox or filler injections, but prefers the use of autologous fat grafts and subtle facelifting surgical techniques. Botox and dermal fillers are synthetic options, whereas fat grafts are natural, living human tissue provided by the patient’s healthy fat reserves. He is passionate yet conservative and has undertaken specialist training with some of the ‘masters’ of international plastic surgery. “I think today, more than at any other time
What age is the best to undergo facial rejuvenation? “No need to rush into this - put it off until you are in your mid - late 50’s, to get the most benefit for your money,” says Dr Klaassen. “Our patients are generally very happy, once they have recovered from the initial ordeal - facial rejuvenation is real surgery, requiring healing and rehabilitation. Some patients look so different post-operatively that my secretary has to make sure she has the correct file. The morphological change is
It’s fair to say that if you’re thinking of making an appointment to see a plastic surgeon with regard to facial rejuvenation, it can be daunting.

accompanied by a real emotional change of happiness and renewed confidence. It is important for husbands and partners to support them through this and they do. Everyone hits the post surgery blues after seven or eight days - you need to be prepared.” A non-negotiable prerequisite for undergoing facial rejuvenation is good health. “Physical and mental wellness contributes to a good looking, youthful face,” says Dr Klaassen. “We only agree to proceed if all the health boxes have been ticked.” “I won’t operate on smokers - patients have to prove to me that they haven’t smoked for six months and won’t for another six months. Smokers have twelve times the normal rate of complications so why would a surgeon take the risk?” Dr Klaassen trained in New Zealand but spent several years overseas working in Glasgow, London and Sydney before opening Parnell Surgeon in 2012. He acknowledges with sincere appreciation the influence of leading surgeons like Dr Lawrence C Y Ho FRACS of Sydney and Dr Bryan C Mendelson FRACS of Melbourne toward his current thinking and understanding of modern methods for facial rejuvenation. “I stand on the shoulders of giants,” he says.
FRACS stands for Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). The college, founded in Melbourne in 1927, is responsible for training and examining surgeons in Australia and NZ. Choose your surgeon wisely.

David is one of many young physiotherapists attracted to New Zealand by the job opportunities and who travelled here to start a new career. “I graduated a couple of years ago and went to a presentation by Jason and Lorna in Dublin. They were inspirational. I had an interview with them and here I am. I loved the idea of travelling to a fascinating new country and the fact I can combine my love of Pilates and physiotherapy really appealed.”
David started at Peak Pilates and physiotherapy a few weeks ago after first undergoing Peak’s intensive training as a Pilates instructor at their new purpose built training facility in St Johns.
Aware that many people see Pilates as gentle exercise David remarks that in reality, it provides a sound workout keeping bodies flexible, toned and mobile. “When performed correctly it can develop strength and body awareness for everyone and is effective for muscle balancing, injury and post-operative rehabilitation, as well as providing relief of pain in the back, neck and shoulders. In fact many people leave sessions pain-free.”

Age Appropriate Beauty Advice from The Face Place We’re interested in looking our best whatever our age, so we asked Dr Catherine Stone from The Face Place MedSpa, and the top-rating TV program 10 Years Younger about what cosmedicine treatments might be most appropriate for different decades of life. Luckily she’s just come back from a top conference in Paris with some exciting new techniques to share! TEENS: Teenagers are all about skin – this is the best time of life to start using great skin care, especially products containing vitamins A and C, which can help treat acne as well as giving your skin the maximum nutrition so it looks great for a lifetime. 20s: Beautifying your face by enhancing what you already have is the major focus of men and women seeking treatment in their twenties. Dermal fillers can be used to subtly enhance lips, cheeks, chins and noses and achieve balance and harmony, while still looking like you. IPL hair reduction is common, and many in their twenties consider treatments for facial slimming, excessive sweating and headaches. If you’re noticing the beginning of lines creeping in through the frown and crows, ‘baby doses’ of neuromodulators such as Botox can help soften and prevent these lines from getting deeper. 30s: As we start to lose the ‘stuffing’ from the fat pads in our face, we notice that the hollows under our eyes deepen, mouth corners start to creep down, and the nasolabial ‘smile’ lines start to sag more. Dermal filler can be used to refill these fat pats and create a natural, more refreshed look. As lines from muscle movement start to deepen, brows and mouth corners start to drop, and the lines around the lips start to creep in, neuromodulators to relax the muscles become more appropriate. Sun
damage can start to show as brown spots and redness, which can be treated with IPL or lasers, and a tailored cosmeceutical skincare regimen is recommended to reverse and prevent the early signs of ageing. 40s: Your 40s are when you’ll notice the most significant changes, as the bones of the face start to shrink, cheeks and mid face start to sag, resulting in deeper nasolabial folds, early jowls and sagging of the face. This is usually worse if you are very slim or have lost weight. Replacing cheek volume with fillers gives a lifted and rejuvenated appearance, and if your temple area has started to hollow and the brows started to drop, new filler techniques treating the cheek, temple and brow simultaneously can give your skin a beautiful, subtle lift that can have you looking years younger. I call it the ‘lunchtime facelift in a syringe’! Treatments such as PRP (platelet rich plasma) and dermal rolling can increase active skin cells in the treated areas, stimulating collagen production and often tightening the skin. Great skin nutrition with a cosmeceutical skin regimen becomes even more important, and neuromodulators like Botox should be part of your general maintenance. 50s: As menopause hits, the skin changes, becoming drier and thinner, and requiring more attention. PRP and dermal rolling
can help thicken and tighten the skin, and again, your cosmeceutical skin regimen may need to change. Lines deepen, unless you are using neuromodulators to prevent this – although it’s not too late to start using Botox! Neck and décolletage often show significant signs of sun damage unless you have used sun protection and vitamin creams on them for most of your life. You can treat this area with IPL, dermal rolling and/or PRP to thicken and improve the skin. 60+: Bone loss in the lower jaw can result in an uneven jawline and sagging skin in the lower face and neck. Rejuvenating the jawline with volumising filler can create a lifted effect through the lower face, reducing the jowls, while filler in the hands can soften the bony appearance and prominent veins. Subtle enhancements in the lips and around the eyes are needed to ensure that the overall look is timeless and age appropriate rather than overdone. Our role at The Face Place is to soften the negative signs of ageing and reveal a timeless, more beautiful you - we help you to age gracefully! These recommendations are very general, whereas we prefer to personalise and tailor treatments to the individual, so please visit www.thefaceplace.co.nz if you would like more information.

The Virgin Wax Words Lulu Alach
Not so long ago I realised I was a 40-year-old virgin! Well yes and no... more correctly, I was an over-40 Brazilian wax virgin. I had been shaving and depilatory creaming myself stupid, and often in vain, trying to keep things under control ‘down there’ all these years, but had never tried waxing. It seemed high time to look for an easier solution to prickly stubble, shaving rash and smelly, ineffective creams for groomed nether regions. I decided I should visit Auckland’s most experienced and wellknown Brazilian wax specialist - Rubywaxx. Like any virgin you want someone who knows what they’re doing and has seen it all before. I wanted to feel comfortable and I knew that Ruby is the trailblazer for Brazilian waxing in Auckland, starting the trend here in the mid 90’s for the beauty therapy industry and making it a feature service at Rubywaxx clinics. In fact, if your Brazilian wax is not completed in 15 minutes at a Rubywaxx clinic, you get it for free! This is a great service especially for those of us on tight schedules. Ruby asked me to grow my stubble for a couple of weeks as about a centimetre is required for a good grip by the wax. Rubywaxx clinics use a special formulation of wax for Brazilian waxing that leaves very little residue on the skin and is less sticky, facilitating a cleaner, neater wax that grabs every hair, and doesn’t require the tweezing of missed hairs. A talc is applied to the area before the application of wax to ensure skin remains untouched. I’m not going to lie to you, the first couple of wax strips are a bit bracing, but not unbearable. It helps if you breathe out at the same time as a strip comes off. Ruby is an expert at this and did ‘up the Khyber’ without request. It was all over in a flash and I seemed to get immune to the sensation of wax strips coming off after the first 2 or 3. It’s a good idea to use the special oil recommended on the area afterwards to minimise the chance of ingrown hairs and soothe the skin. This has to be a much better plan to keep things lady-like down there. Only once a month and it’s someone else’s’ job. We love that. Can’t believe I left it this long!

If You’re Not Testing, You’re Just Guessing. There remains to be a stigma surrounding visiting a nutritionist, naturopath or the like. Why? Perhaps the reason is that patients fear they will walk out of the clinic with a bunch of supplements and very little insight into what has been plaguing them health-wise. Words: Brooke Steff
There remains to be a stigma surrounding visiting a nutritionist, naturopath or the like. Why? Perhaps the reason is that patients fear they will walk out of the clinic with a bunch of supplements and very little insight into what has been plaguing them health-wise. Before qualifying as a naturopath, I had a similar stirring. I had visited many naturopaths and, while they were less disappointing than a doctor’s visit, I was still sufficiently underwhelmed. What irked me was obviously nothing personal with the practitioners, but how little light was shed onto my situation.
is a much faster way to get some answers. We can do this through laboratory testing that involves the analysis of blood, urine, hair or stool. For example’ sake, analytes called organic acids can be measured in urine. The analysis of organic acids is incredibly helpful when trying to assess the state of someone’s internal biochemistry. One organic acids test can unveil a vast array of indicators, including vitamin deficiency indicators, amino acid indicators, antioxidant indicators, detoxification markers and dysbiosis indicators. Elevations in organic acids can aid in determining environmental, behavioral, genetic and gut problems that result in functional deficiencies- things that you won’t find in a blood test. My question to you is this: if you are not testing and having a look at your body’s biochemical functioning, how will you ever really know what is going wrong? Sure, your practitioner has had a lot of training and clinical experience and through detailed case-takes and discussions has a strong sense of what might be going on with you, but is this really enough? Now, don’t misunderstand me. There are many people who find relief and resolution through various treatment protocols their practitioner has prescribed, without having done any testing. What I am hoping to elucidate is that the majority of dis-eases that present these days are very complex, involving multiple organs and their associated infrastructure. They take a long time to develop and ordinarily are not resolved with one single pill or one single protocol. As a naturopath, when I am deciding on a treatment plan for a client, there is always a strong sense of which direction I should head, what I should prioritise and what nutrients, foods or herbs should be prescribed. An educated guess. But, a guess nonetheless. Personally, I prefer knowing exactly what I am dealing with, so that both my patient and myself can be comforted in knowing that I have eliminated all of the “possible” causes and consequently the financial investment in potentially unnecessary supplements and herbal formulas, and have immediately honed in to the biochemical cause of their complaint. When you request a test like this for yourself, with your practitioner’s guidance, you are respecting the fact that you are biochemical individual. And through extracting a significant amount of usable information, you are decreasing the time it takes you to return to full health. *Functional medicine is a dynamic, holistic approach to assessing, preventing, and treating complex chronic disease. It considers all aspects of a person’s health including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and biochemical factors in order to achieve the desired health outcomes.
No practitioner knows everything. But my expectations are always very high. I think the problem lies within the realm of investigative tools- or the quality of- in the typical natural health practitioner’s tool kit. While tongue, nail and pulse assessment are valid and have their place, are they really going to uncover the root of dis-ease? Especially in our modern world? Let’s be real. The world that we live in is not a health-promoting one. The amount of environmental and chemical assaults that are placed upon us each day is staggering and this will only continue to grow, along with the complexity of our health issues. The world that our grandparents grew up in is gone, and so too are simpler methods of unlocking our vitality. While this sounds as though I am just the bearer of bad news, you should know that there are very effective ways of achieving such resolutions with your health. Functional medicine is not new. What is new, however, is the growing public interest in “getting to the bottom of it all”. Whether you have been battling with constant fatigue, struggle to lose weight, have sleeping problems, relentless skin eruptions or have been suffering with a chronic condition for years, there

Use it or Lose it I recently read an article in the New Zealand Herald that got me thinking. The article was about how active people age better and why. They interviewed Jane Fonda who, at age 75, is still going strong. It was a great read since it was about one of my favourite topics - I am always talking about muscle loss and importance of actively maintaining it. In today’s article I am going to talk about muscles loss and the “use it or lose it” phenomenon. The question is: “What future are you designing?” Quoting Jane Fonda: “Some people mistakenly think, ‘Oh, I can’t exercise. I’ve never done it . . . or I stopped too many years ago! Well, we’ve all heard the truism, ‘Use it or lose it’. What this leaves out, however, is that if it’s lost we can get it back. Not only can we recover lost functions but in some cases we can actually increase function beyond our prior level.” All of us know that we tend to put on weight as we get older. This is due partly to our tendency to be less active while continuing to eat the way we always have. But it is also due to the fact that we lose, on average, three to five per cent of our muscle tissue each decade after the age of 30. This means our resting metabolism (basal metabolism) slows down. Unless we specifically tell our body to maintain our muscles and consciously eat the appropriate (and nutrient-rich) calories, our metabolism will continue to slow and the kgs will continue to pile on – not to mention becoming weaker and frailer. The great news is that this can be very easily addressed by maintaining your muscle mass. And of course this is achieved by lifting some heavy weights on a regular basis. If you are thinking “but heavy weights will bulk me up”, remember we girls don’t have the testosterone to get us “big and bulky” like guys. Also there is a whole “calorie storage vs usage” balance that our body has to adjust to when you start a programme before the results (ie dropping layers and toning up) starts to show. Both of these topics are fascinating tangents – but topics for another day . . . for now just trust me it’s true. The other great thing for men and woman is that we really only need one heavy weight-lifting session, once per week and it can all be done and dusted in 30 minutes or less. This means there really is no such an excuses as “not enough time in my week”. So what future are you designing for yourself? The still-strongat-75 one or the one where you wonder “what if. . .”

HOW IS YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION GOING? PROVEN SOLUTIONS TO MANAGE PAIN Take control of acute, chronic or persistent pain with Biopsychosocial integrative pain management • Reduce pain intensity • Increase physical function/mobility • Address emotional impacts We combine musculoskeletal pain management with the expert Physiotherapists at Remuera Physiotherapy and Specialist Osteopaths to provide a unique blend of evidence-based care unrivalled in New Zealand
Discipline, motivated, organized and accountable- are these still familiar words? When it comes to starting a resolution it is easy to fall back into old habits without self-control and support. “We all need a bit of support sometimes to help us get to our goals,” says Kate Walke from the Liz K Transformation Studio. When it comes to weight loss women tend to need a lot of support as in many cases there is so much care given to everyone else in the family that their personal goals get left behind. Frustration and stress can cause overeating and undesirable habits. Positive perception of food is very important but for many women it comes with negative experiences and emotions. We support our clients to encourage a bit of ‘me time’ with exercise and healthy eating to reinforce new attitudes and habits surrounding food. This leads to sustainable weightloss and maintenance! You may have just started your new year’s resolution to lose weight and now you have to deal with yet another potential food and alcohol hazard…Easter weekend! “At least one in three people over-indulge over long weekends,” says Kate. Implementing a Food Strategy is important for these sticky situations. Food Strategy is planning to encompass how to enjoy oneself without the weight gain or guilt (or feeling guilty about being left out).

1.
Eat the right kind of chocolate – go as dark as you can! Dark chocolate has less sugar and more antioxidants than milk chocolate and it’s harder to overindulge in. Aim for 70 per cent cocoa.
2.
Avoid buying a large amount or variety of chocolates - this will only encourage you to try one of everything. The less you have, the less you will want.
3.
Get active! Try to do an activity for each egg you may have, whether it be your normal run/ walk or doing the Easter Egg hunt with the kids. Also write down how much chocolate or ‘other treats’ you have to keep an eye on energy in vs energy out. Kate Walker is a nutritional and wellness consultant at Liz K Transformation studio. BRAIN DAY 2013 The University of Auckland Grafton Campus, 85 Park Road, Auckland Saturday 16 March, 9am to 4pm Dreams, imagination and the science of happiness are some aspects of ‘the Creative Brain’ to be discussed at Auckland Brain Day this year. Brain Day, organised by the Centre for Brain Research at The University of Auckland and sponsored by the Neurological Foundation, will be held on Saturday March 16th. The aim is to provide the community with information on the many brain disorders affecting people, along with exciting developments in brain research. This popular annual event is open to the public and will be held at the University’s revamped Medical and Health Sciences building in Park Road, Grafton. Every amazing work of art, literature or music in the history of civilisation has been generated by the human brain. This incredible organ not only makes us who we are but also creates and perceives an in-depth world for us to appreciate.
Why should I choose Pilates over yoga? Or can I do both and they complement each other? Many of our clients do both and some of our instructors teach yoga as well as Pilates. Pilates is a contemporary method, focusing on core strength, control and functional movement. Both are types of mind/body exercise, meaning that a large emphasis is placed on mental focus. What is the student/ratio classes? This will depend on which class that you attend. Normally our mat classes will average 6 to 8 and our equipment sessions 3 to 4. How long is a Pilates class? The majority are an hour, our Abs & Stretch and Reformer classes are 45 minutes. As a middle-aged woman, what benefits would I receive from going to Pilates twice a week? You can expect to feel great! Ask our clients. You will increase your muscle strength, improve your flexibility and, to quote one of our clients, “ your flabby bits won’t wobble so much”. Pilates is great for helping you stay strong and supple, meaning you can carry on doing the things you love .

“I’ve contributed for a long time with teaching, national and international research plus service and commercial work,” says Brimble. “The Rutherford is a lifetime achievement award for my contribution to New Zealand science and technology so it’s a real honour to be recognised.” Brimble joins the prestigious company of some of the nation’s most feted minds and incredibly doubles the number of women on the winners’ list. However, she is quick to slap down any suggestion of the possibility of ladies being overlooked in the past. “To practice science at a high level internationally you have to be totally committed,” says the professor. “I didn’t take a career break to have children, though I have a daughter now, but for those that do, it’s really difficult to keep the momentum going. The Rutherford is a tough one to win for males and females, but I think we’ll now start to see more women coming through.” Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces
Margaret Brimble World-leading scientist Margaret Brimble admits that her success of 2012 will be hard to top. She jokes that “it might be all be downhill from here” following on from a year that saw her awarded a Distinguished Professorship, Membership of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the Hector Medal for excellence in chemistry, the MacDiarmid Medal for science of potential significant benefit to humankind and the illustrious Rutherford Medal, for which she is most proud.
She is by no means a newcomer to the limelight, being the first Kiwi to win the globally recognised L’Oreal-Unesco Women in Science Laureate in 2007, having secured the Novartis Chemistry Award a few years earlier. The development of a traumatic brain injury drug has propelled Brimble’s standing in the scientific community to whole new heights. Ten years ago, biologists at Auckland Medical School were involved in the discovery of a naturally occurring compound that prevented secondary cell deterioration in the brains of rats that had suffered head injuries. “The compound itself was very unstable,” says Margaret, “and they asked me to develop a drug based on that brain-protecting molecule. We chemically modified it and came up with a more potent, more stable drug that has now gone through millions of dollars of clinical trials.” To even reach the trial stage is something that most scientists spend a lifetime ultimately failing to achieve. This drug, the NZ 2566, has impressed the US Army enough to invest nearly $30 million into the project. If the drug, which has already past the first few rounds of testing, becomes marketable then it will be worth tens of billions of dollars to the economy. What makes this all the more satisfying for the professor is that it is the culmination of years of work by her team of only two to three people, vying against pharmaceutical giants from China and America. In true Kiwi spirit it was a David and Goliath situation with victory seeming so implausible, Brimble tells me that at the start she “remembers being laughed at”. The professor compares the creation of molecules to a “highly complicated version of baking a cake”. Simple compounds – the ingredients - are built up to make complicated structures – the cake. That cake is then used to make another cake and that one to make another and so on. With each step, the cake becomes smaller but its structure more complex and at the end of the process there exists the brand new molecule. It’s a labourintensive endeavour that takes many years. “There’s a lot of trial and error with the first attempt,” says Brimble. “You can get right to the end and if it doesn’t work then you have to start all over again.” She is particularly excited about recent approval for the funding of a high-tech lab for her Auckland University team to begin production of components for melanoma vaccines, also for human clinical trial. She’s even working on a cure for the common cold, too. Interestingly, Brimble says the natural world is the key to many of life’s ailments.
MARCH 2013
“Sixty per cent of drugs come from nature,” she says. “Some of nature’s smallest species produce the most complex molecules as the only thing that they have to defend themselves is the chemicals that they produce.” Part of her current academic research centres around the manipulation of the molecules of shellfish that have ingested toxin-producing marine algae. The molecules, which generally produce a negative effect upon receptors of the human brain, can be reproduced, their structures “tinkered with” in order that they produce a positive one. “Once we know how to do it, we can do it again and again, and do it far more easily,” says Brimble. “It’s a game of molecular chess.” Her chess mastery is in high demand. Medals and Queen’s Honours aside, Margaret Brimble is president of the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry, chair of the Rutherford Foundation, associate editor of the Royal Society of Chemistry Journal, vice president of the Organic and Bimolecular Division of the International Union of Applied Chemistry and director of Chemistry at Neuren Pharmaceuticals to name but a few. However, for all of her personal accolades, she says that she would quite happily give up her medals in return for a research grant for the next generation of scientists. She expresses her gratitude for her gifted team and inspirational students, lamenting the “lack of security” that comes with the pursuit of a career in science, especially as many of them could have chosen the safer route of law or medicine. “People don’t realise that it’s actually the scientists and not the doctors that make all of these drugs,” says Brimble. “I’d rather help medicine and contribute to science by being involved in the actual creation process.”
59
It nearly didn’t work out that way, for Margaret’s educational background concentrated principally on languages, but a science class changed all that. “We went into a laboratory and made aspirin,” she says. “I thought, ‘how cool is that?’ In as little as three hours, from scratch we made a drug that benefits the whole of mankind and I realised that that’s what I wanted to do.” And languages’ loss has most certainly proved to be mankind’s gain.
WIDELY REGARDED AMONGST THE BEST VINEYARDS FOR CABERNET, MERLOT AND SYRAH IN NEW ZEALAND Legend has it that Hawke’s Bay floods in the mid 1870s changed the course of the Ngaruroro River. Nobody built arks or lined up animals in twos. But it was the beginning of a cult with many devoted followers. The flood exposed a gravel river bed that we now call the Gimblett Gravels. Viticulturists and winemakers from Hawke’s Bay have drunk and spilt a lot of wine congratulating themselves on the merits of this small piece of grape growing paradise. No hymns have been written yet but many a sermon has been gushed. To be fair, unlike many cults, they have a point and more importantly they have empirical evidence. TThis 850 hectare piece of stony, almost barren, land has proven an excellent home for cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and syrah. A few of the fringe element are also growing chardonnay in the slightly cooler areas where there is more soil and less stone. No longer are these sacred stones the home of the local speedway or yielding two sheep per hectare, they are now producing some of the very best wines in New Zealand.

The Petite Kitchen Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces
Petite Kitchen started as a personal blog for Eleanor Ozich to keep track of her healthconscious recipes. But in just 6 months it has built a loyal following around the world, with over 2000 fans on the Facebook page. “Many of my recipes are simply what I threw together from whatever I had in the fridge or pantry,” says Eleanor, who lists Nigel Slater and Jamie Oliver among her inspirations. “I love that rustic, simple but delicious style of cooking.”
dramatically both physically and mentally from the new diet. She lists her five favourite ingredients as lemon, garlic, honey, butter and fresh herbs which, she says, can transform a bland and boring dish into something spectacular.
As a child, Eleanor lived above her parent’s restaurant and says growing up in that environment sowed the seeds of her love for food, but that within the last couple of years cooking has changed her life, becoming a “full-time passion”. After her daughter, Izabella, developed severe eczema that seemed incurable, Eleanor exhausted all of the traditional medical avenues and turned to a naturopath who discovered that Izabella was suffering from an imbalance of stomach bacterial toxins known as Gut and Psychological Syndrome (GAPS). Eleanor was told to cut sugar, grain, additives and preservatives from her daughter’s diet: the results were spectacular.
“The smallest change can make a world of difference, we really are what we eat,” says Eleanor. “The essence of my mission is to provide others with the joy and lifestyle that has graced our family.”
“I find it inspiring that food, the item that causes so many problems, is also the very thing that can be used to cure and cleanse out bodies and minds,” says Eleanor. “The change in Izabella was huge – she is now a level-headed, bubbly little girl.” Eleanor says that both she and her husband (with whom she founded the NZ fashion label, I Love Ugly) have benefited

RECIPE FROM PETITE KITCHEN
Autumn Harvest Carrot Cake topped with Vanilla Cream Frosting “Though the air is still warm with summer, I have found myself anticipating the cooler, crisper days. With the new season approaching, I have decided to bring together the Autumn flavors in this comforting spiced carrot cake. In usual Petite Kitchen fashion, this delicious moist cake is gluten-, refined sugar- and dairy free, topped with a vanilla cream macadamia nut frosting.” Eleanor Ozich
INGREDIENTS
FOR THE FROSTING:
METHOD
2 cups ground almonds ½ cup grated carrot ½ cup shredded coconut 4 tbsp coconut oil (you can also use butter) 4 tbsp honey 4 eggs 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tsp cloves 2 tsp nutmeg 1 tsp baking soda a pinch of salt
1 cup macadamia nuts, soaked in water overnight 3 tbsp coconut oil 2 tbsp honey 2 tsp pure vanilla extract a handful of pistachios for decorating (optional)
Preheat the oven to 180°C and grease a cake pan with coconut oil. In a food processor add all of the cake ingredients. Process until well combined. Pour in to the prepared cake pan then put into the oven to bake for 30 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean when inserted. Leave to cool completely before carefully inverting on to a plate. To make the frosting, place the well-drained macadamia nuts, coconut oil, honey and vanilla in the bowl of a food processor. Blend for at least 1-2 minutes until a smooth consistency is reached. Spread on to the cake using a knife or the back of a spoon. Sprinkle with the pistachio nuts, if using. Makes around 8 pieces, keeps for 3-4 days

Jimmy The Fish At Ponsonby Central Words:Timothy Giles
The fish is delicious and the man who prepared it, Jimmy ‘The Fish’ Gerard, isn’t surprised. Not one little bit. The hugely experienced chef, restaurateur and fish expert accepts my compliment as a simple fact of life in NZ: “We are lucky with our fish in NZ, we’ve got great fish, but we don’t take advantage of it you know.” And the nod turns into a slow shake of the head, “I don’t know why, but we don’t make the most of all the great fish we’ve got.”
But you’re not limited to the menu. “Choose any fish from the display and I’ll cook it for you, say with fries and side salad ($20). Although at the weekend I did a potato risotto,” says Jimmy He has to explain potato risotto, a dish that’s new to me. “You prep little cubed potatoes, an onion and garlic base, sauté it off, add water and cook till it’s done. Finish it of with a little cream butter and parsley.” Sounds good to me.
Jim Gerard has certainly done his bit to promote fish. A life-long restaurateur, co-founder of Harbourside restaurant, for nearly 30 years Auckland’s finest seafood restaurant – he has also supplies the city’s finest restaurants with the best market fish bought at the auctions early each morning. He’s now his own newest customer with his latest venture, Jimmy The Fish at Ponsonby Central. It is a fish shop, selling fish bought daily at auction and superb fish meals to eat in or take out. The staple is fish and chips but the blackboard menu features daily meals. Today’s success was the vongole of cockles with chilli, garlic and spaghetti and a mussel dish with coriander, turmeric and ginger beer.
“Oh it was. Everybody loved it but, I shouldn’t have done it.” He shakes his head: It’s a dish you have to keep your eye on. Forget it and it turns to mash in a moment. Terrific if you’ve got the time but when it’s busy, oh well. Every one raved about it. I get these harebrained ideas. You have to go with your ideas don’t you?” As he regularly does at Parnell’s La Cigale market every Saturday 8am to 1pm. His wet fish stand there is hugely popular. “I almost gave up on that; it took months before finally it got going.” The drive is the same for Jimmy The Fish. “I want to get great fish into people’s hands and help them with how to get the best out of it. We’ve got to get people off the mainstream species.”
Into fish such as turbot and lemon sole? “Turbot,” he says, “is lovely; soft savoury flavours, reasonable texture, not a dense flesh, on par with tarakihi. Great for poaching and baking, it’s a great dinner party fish straight from oven to table. Rolled into a paupiette, nicely buttered fillets and once you’ve prepped it, you’re done – it’s hassle-free entertaining.” Next comes “lemon sole, a bloody good fish, our lemon sole is on par with Dover sole. When people see lemon sole in NZ they misread it. It’s a nice firm fish, delicately flavoured, nothing like yellowbelly flounder; it’s clean. Cooking it on the bone, I like to trim the outside wings, dust it in flour, pan-fry it with a non- intrusive oil to brown each side for a few minutes (5-10) and finish with butter, lemon juice and capers firmed up to a beurre noisette, can’t beat it.” I suggest he’d need to show me. “No problem, it’s what we’re here for.” And he’s there every day, selling fish served up with free inspiration. Kazuya 193 Symonds St Eden Terrace 09 377 8537 www.kazuya.co.nz
Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces
Before setting foot on these shores, Kazuya Yamauchi had worked for a leading Italian eatery in Tokyo and toured Europe in search of gastronomic inspiration, honing his culinary skills. And hone them he most certainly did. The former head chef of Auckland’s Rice and Cibo, along with partner Haruko, now owns his own restaurant, creating dishes that are nothing short of stunning. Surely one of the best-kept secrets in Auckland, true to form, Kazuya is so well hidden amongst the dairies, dry cleaners and hairdressers of Symonds Street that one almost gets the impression that they don’t want to be discovered. The interior is slick, fresh and contemporary, a relatively limited floor area adds to the intimate feel while never feeling crowded. Sumptuous leather-bound booths offer ample room and privacy and the brooding décor is enhanced by dazzling, crisp linen. There’s profound attention to detail too. Nice touches such as switch-blade style butter knives, white-gloved waiters and gleaming, razor-sharp steak blades, which, our ever affable host, Mojo, the restaurant’s manager, tells us were handcrafted in Italy. There’s a real feeling of camaraderie amongst the staff who are big on enlightening their guests with interesting facts concerning their craft. The service from start to finish was simply faultless with the full force of Japanese hospitality exemplified by us being
given two extra courses on top of our menu’s seven, including a round of inhouse baked bread, olive oil and freshly churned butter. Our intriguing palate opener of gazpacho had been treated to spherification whereby liquid is trapped within a thin, solidified jelly-like layer. The bite-sized ball gently bursting in the mouth is a real delight. The spiced cream ratatouille with egg yolk sauce, served in an elegant glass, incredibly tasted even better than it looked. Next up, the Ora King Salmon confit boasted a slither of slow cooked flesh - so soft it liquefied on the tongue which is smoked on site and served with wisps of grey mist snaking from the bowl. The restaurant’s signature dish, “Texture”, is just that, a beautifully crafted chaos of 30 types of finely sliced vegetables and prosciutto, surrounded by swirls of subtle sauces and all topped with a sprinkling of snow-like powder made from olive oil. A chunky, yet tender prawn and scallop – sourced from Hokkaido in northern Japan – followed with a drizzle of balsamic and soy sauce and a mushroom foam that bubbled on the tongue and continued to do so, satisfyingly, for a good while after. The duck breast was cooked to perfection, its pink centre blushing into darker surrounding shades with butternut purée and a red wine jus which, our waiter proudly told us, had been two days in the making. Each dish
seemed to complement and enhance the previous and following ones, building layer upon layer of blissful satisfaction. To end, the deconstructed fruit mango tart was served with butterscotch ice-cream, caramel, nuts and foaming coconut milk and the petits fours, akin to a celebratory climax were a mini firework display in the mouth, white chocolate giving way to a crackling, sweet fizz. While there are obvious Japanese and European influences to Kazuya’s creations, to attempt to pigeon-hole them almost does him a disservice for what this chef produces is a transcendent art. All at the table agreed that this was amongst the finest dining experiences that we’d ever had and most certainly, my taste buds are still thanking me for it.
Surely one of the best-kept secrets in Auckland, true to form, Kazuya is so well hidden amongst the dairies, dry cleaners and hairdressers of Symonds Street that one almost gets the impression that they don’t want to be discovered.

THE PHOENIX TREE Discreetly nestled amongst a row of shopfronts on Remuera Road rests Auckland’s newest garden restaurant, the Phoenix Tree. An Asian-fusion eatery, it takes its name from the mythical Phoenix bird with a vibrant décor that boasts an array of gold and scarlet in honour of its namesake’s majestic plumage. Ancient Chinese furniture has been imported, customised, and incorporated into the restaurant’s contemporary vibe with an upstairs that affords the opportunity to kick back on luxurious sofas in an authentic Sino setting. The piece de resistance is to be found out back in a secret garden of dazzling white set against lush green leaves, pastel flowers and the gentle twinkling of fairy lights. As for the food, it was as colourful and aesthetically pleasing as the surroundings. The dragon rolls – prawns, basil, silk noodles and thin, crunchy carrot slices – were light and moreish, finished with the slightest hint of fresh mint. The tom yum soup was glorious and the succulent prawns and shredded beef arrived with a delectable home-made thousand island sauce. The roasted duck, in an airy roti bread wrap and gentle drizzle of passionfruit, sublime. A delightful eggplant hotpot followed, a fine balance of flavours with a faint spicy edge and the perfect contrast to our seasonal vegetables, including shiitake mushrooms, soaked beneath shimmering coconut cream. The Szechuan-styled chicken and speciality pork belly were faultless, the latter, braised in a subtle soy sauce, melted on our tongues. A classy tiramisu and pot of inhouse-brewed tea of fruit and fragrant petals provided the perfect end to the meal.

Ireland’s call There are over 70 million people who claim Irish heritage worldwide and Ireland is putting out an invitation for them all to visit in 2013! Words: Síana Clifford
Ireland: the land of 40 shades of green, a hundred thousand welcomes and countless places to enjoy a pint of Guinness or a nip of whiskey. There have always been plenty of reasons to make your way to the Emerald Isle and in 2013 The Gathering provides another. The Gathering is an initiative set up by the Irish government to invite people to come to Ireland in 2013, particularly those with Irish heritage wanting to explore their roots and emigrants who haven’t been home in while. To encourage people to come, loads of events and festivals have been organised to celebrate and showcase the very best of all things Irish and these are happening all year throughout the country. Some of the major annual festivals – such as the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival and the Rose of Tralee festival – will be even bigger and better this year, but what’s really fun and unique about The Gathering is that community groups, family groups, schools, businesses, universities and sports clubs have also been encouraged to organise their own gatherings and reunions. This means that there will be something going on to suit every visitor to any part of the country, whether you’re into sport, music, dancing, food, history or culture. If you’re blessed with beautiful red tresses, you’ll want to join your fellow redheads at the Irish Redhead Convention in Cork, a festival of ‘ginger-loving madness’ including a
redhead parade and freckle-counting competitions. If you find history fascinating, the JFK 50 Homecoming in Wexford will be right up your street, with events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of JFK’s visit to New Ross, his ancestral home. If you fancy yourself a bit of a whizz on the dance floor, the Festival of Irish Dance in Dublin is bound to get your feet tapping and you won’t want to miss the world’s longest Riverdance performance along the banks of the River Liffey. And if you have an Irish surname like Burke, Flynn or Farrelly, there are clan reunions happening all over the country. There are literally hundreds of events taking place during this year-long celebration and there’s a dedicated website – www.thegatheringireland.com – where you can find out about them all. In honour of The Gathering, this year even more of the world’s iconic landmarks are turning green for St Patrick’s Day on 17th March including, for the first time, the pyramids of Giza and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Here in Auckland, the first city in the world to celebrate the day, the Sky Tower will turn green once again. There’ll be a parade down Queen Street followed by a display of traditional Irish music and dance at Queen’s Wharf. So make sure you go along and have a look, and then, if you’re inspired to see how they party in Ireland, book your tickets to Ireland for even more of the craic the Irish are famous for.

Parnell is putting together a special presentation for its White Night visitors with a curated programme of street-based art projects running from 6pm until midnight. Artworks will occupy the streets and courtyards of the historic village to make the night come alive. Performance, interactive projects and site-specific installations from emerging and established artists provide varied programme to suit the whole family. Parnell’s friendly on-street art ambassadors will be on hand with free location guides so that you can make the most of all the projects on offer and relax as you soak up the fantastic atmosphere. Projects are spread along Parnell Road from Fraser Park to the Holy Trinity Cathedral and all the galleries are open till midnight. Be captivated by Sian Torrington’s ambitious One abandoned uncontained movement has opened a new room in me. Created on-site over the course of several weeks and illuminated for White Night, this monumental nest-like installation inhabits and entwines one of Parnell’s historic trees. Using colourful and diverse materials this work is glorious and complicated; mystical and full of unresolved energy. Celebrate the night with Brit Bunkley’s uncanny dancehall projection, Downbreak on 1, Upbeat on 2. See the precinct lit up with three Art in the Dark light-based interactive installations. Visit site-specific projects from emerging artists, including Emma Chalmers, Ross Forbes, Daphne Simons and Mark O’Donnell, and Lang Ea. Get creative with Make Something, an interactive project which invites visitors to sculpt their own three-dimensional artwork, contributing to an evolving sculpture garden which expands throughout the night. Make yourself at home as students from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design present Shelter, transforming a series of spaces into welcoming resting places for the art traveller. Part childhood hut, part conversation-pit, these provisional lounges invite the viewer to come in, sit down and enjoy a range of entertainment and art activities. White Night is inspired by the popular Parisian Nuit Blanche (meaning White Night or Sleepless Night), which has been reprised in the world’s cultural capitals. With a festival-like atmosphere, White Night celebrates visual arts throughout the night as museums and art galleries remain open into the witching hour.

Matt Payne Land and Sea
79
Top: Glendhu Bay – Lake Wanaka, 1700 x 810 mm
EXHIBITION: 12 – 26 MARCH
Preview: Tuesday 12th March, 5.30pm Matt Payne is a gifted young artist whose work is quickly gaining prominence on the New Zealand art scene. He graduated from Whitecliffe School of Art and Design in 2004 and since then has continued to paint and sell his work, which he now produces on a full-time basis. Landscape features strongly in Matt’s oeuvre, and he is particularly inspired by a love of the coast. Glistening seas and pristine sands feature in his dramatic compositions, rendered with breathtaking accuracy. The exhibition also boasts several stunning depictions of South Island lakes and mountains. Precise representations of particular moments in time evoke the mystery of the natural world. The translucency of a wave, dappled sand revealed briefly below as it breaks; the delicate foam lacing the water left behind as it rolls into shore; or the glassy sheen of tranquil water in the early morning, are all captured with meticulous quality and sharply focused detail. The tradition of dark and light contrasts that are inherent in our landscape are also apparent, with bush covered hills and majestic rock formations starkly juxtaposed against sunwashed blue skies. This brings great depth to the work, the air itself from picture plane to distant horizon rendered full of salt, light and breeze. The endless possibilities of the relationships between colour, light and form provide an ongoing fascination for Matt. Viewpoints are often close to the picture plane, bringing us into an intimate proximity with the serene essence of these landscapes, so completely captured by the artist. The paintings are acrylic on canvas, using bright clear colours, the trueness of which will be happily recognised by the viewer. ‘Land and Sea’ opens on Tuesday 12th March at Parnell Gallery, 263 Parnell Road, Auckland. MARCH 2013
Lauren Lysaght ‘Summer Holiday’ Lauren Lysaght has brought her Summer Holiday to life at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail as the Summer Artist Project for 2013. Lysaght recreates the joy, colour and ‘laidback-ness’ of her childhood summer holidays in this whimsical campsite featuring giant buttercups, a tent, campfire, hammock, clothesline and charming wee bluebirds. “As a child at school, whenever we returned from the break our first task was always to write an essay titled ‘What I Did on My Summer Holiday’ ” the artist says. Here, Lauren begins her essay “On my summer holiday I went camping in the bush. When I returned home I left the bush exactly how I found it…” A sensitive site-responsive piece, Lysaght photographed the landscape and printed these images onto outdoor fabric. As a result each element gently sits in its surroundings, a campsite which compliments and enlivens the land it temporarily inhabits.
As the seasons change, the artist hopes her work will remain in the viewer’s memory to sustain them through winter and beyond. Each summer season Brick Bay installs a temporary work to enrich the trail, offering visitors something a little out of the ordinary, and an artist the opportunity to create a work more ephemeral in nature. The Artist Project serves to broaden an understanding of sculpture in addition to the diverse abundance of work by leading New Zealand artists available for sale at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail. And when it finally is time to put your feet up or beat a path to your latest bookclub meeting then the book you want to have to hand is a copy of Maggie O’Farrell’s latest, Instructions for a Heatwave. Set in a hot dry English summer in the 70s, Gretta’s husband Robert goes out and doesn’t come back. Their grown-up children each think they know where he will be but there is more going on in this complicated family than they tell each other and so the misunderstandings happen. Instructions for Heatwave is excellent reading and will be much talked about.
A super book you can either read and put on your own coffee table to keep decorating inspiration close by or a book to be used as a point of reference for those in the styling and design business to keep you on trend with the smartest and latest ideas in interior design. Muted palette, beautiful photographs and a relaxed style of living make Interiors/ Atelier AM a much desired book.

From acclaimed director Jacques Audiard, who delivered such powerhouse films including the Oscar-nominated A Prophet, Read My Lips and the eight Cesar-award winning The Beat That My Heart Skipped, comes Rust and Bone. Based on the book of short stories by Canadian author Craig Davidson, Rust and Bone follows Alain (Schoenaerts) a mid-twenties dropout. Penniless and landed with a five-year-old son to look after, he goes to stay with his sister in Antibes and starts looking for work. At a nightclub he meets Stephanie (Cotillard), a killer whale trainer at the local Marineland Water Park. Alain is fascinated by her, but Stephanie isn’t interested in him, until she suffers a tragic accident that leaves her handicapped. An unusual, physical and codified relationship develops between them. As in Audiard’s previous films, with Rust and Bone he takes two characters in an unlikely relationship, on the margins of society, plagued by their inner demons and obsessions, and delivers a deeply dramatic punch. Directed by Jacques Audiard Starring: Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts Rated: TBC Runtime: 120 minutes

Peter Bromhead: A Life in Pictures Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces
The day prior to this interview, an image by fellow political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe was run in The Sunday Times, which portrayed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu building a brick wall over the bloodied remnants of Palestinian civilians. Such was the outrage at the perceived anti-Semitism, Rupert Murdoch took the unprecedented step of publically lambasting the sketch, distancing his publication from what he considered a “grotesque, offensive cartoon.
MARCH 2013
“People get very emotional about anything to do with the Middle East,” says Peter Bromhead. “When you become an old dog like me, you tend not to go into areas that will draw an emotional tirade. It’s like pouring petrol on a fire.” He says that the furore that followed the publication of images of the prophet Muhammad in Denmark half a decade ago illustrates the point perfectly. “Younger cartoonists especially often want to test things, make a controversial name for themselves,” he continues. “But an opinion through a drawing is just that – an opinion. It’s tomorrow’s fish and chip papers.” Bromhead’s weekly column for the Herald humorously chronicles the life of a cantankerous old codger, his “caregiver” and his dealings with an ever-changing, ever-modernising world. Bromhead believes that the digital age has lessened the impact of the media’s might through the “continual bombardment of visual images through our TVs, phones and computer screens.” He laments that his cartoons no longer have the same impact as they did at the start of his career, nearly half a century ago, though praises the instant connectivity that the internet affords. I ask if his work has been evenly balanced, politically, over those five decades. “For years I never voted,” he says. “I believe that as a political cartoonist I had to remain neutral, but if you were to pin me down I guess I’d be termed a rightwing liberal for I’m also a businessman and I believe in the work ethic.”
remarks implies otherwise. He’s clearly a proud dad and any comment upon his fathering capabilities must be wounding even for a tough old boot who grew up in the Blitz-battered south of England. During that time Bromhead lost his own father and says that he got through it and younger men, too, leave their kids every day of course. “I’ve been in a relationship with my wife for nearly twenty years. It’s a very happy time of my life and I feel blessed to have had this opportunity.” It was the subject of 2012 ONE News documentary which Bromhead says was “put together in a very underhand manner”. “They were only interested in the puerile side of it, namely our sex lives,” he says. “What was bizarre to me was that my wife and I were interviewed separately. They questioned Carolyn then re-shot new questions to fit the answers without using her in the re-editing process.” So viewers were essentially watching fake questions posed to your wife who in actual fact wasn’t even there? “Correct. I’ve been in the wonderful world of journalism for forty-odd years and I realise that it’s a double edged sword, but even I was taken aback. It was very unethical.” One of fame’s many downsides? “I don’t feel any special need to seek publicity. It’s easy to be famous in a
His award-winning international interior design company expanded to a new centre in Parnell last year with the opening ceremony conducted by John Key. So presumably the illustrator has never caused the Prime Minister any offence with his musings? “Politicians tend to never be offended by cartoons,” he says. “In fact, they’re often flattered by the attention! John Key’s a regular kind of bloke, he lives just round the corner and we share the occasional coffee so I asked him to come along. He was happy to oblige. My line of work helped too, I suppose.” 2011 saw Bromhead bestowed the title of New Zealand’s – and possibly Australasia’s – oldest dad and that, coupled with the fact that his wife, Carolyn, is forty years his junior, briefly shifted Bromhead’s social role from commentator to ‘commentedupon’. Some coverage was, perhaps unsurprisingly, negative, and while he’s by no means the first man to find himself in such circumstances, bringing two young children into the world when pushing 80 is not an ideal situation. Peter is “philosophical” about it and says that the opinion of others is not important though his later reference to the “snide”

very small pond. If you want to measure your fame then go overseas and see who knows you in America or Britain. Of course, I just disappear.” In recent years Bromhead has been making regular trips to the USA’s Stanford University to research ways in which to improve design standards and education here in New Zealand and he’s also working on concepts for a new Kiwi industrial design school. He’s recently published another children’s book in America too and is in the process of editing his latest offering, The Disinformation Agent, about a World War Two double-agent, which, if all goes to plan, will be released through his Edinburgh publishers later this year. “I turn 80 soon and am starting to wonder how many projects I can handle at one time,” says Bromhead. “But I don’t feel old. I’m still burning bright inside and working because I enjoy it. I’m a very lucky man.” His age and experience of course attracts the attention of young and upcoming reporters in search of advice and he says that he is more than happy to pass on that wisdom. What do you tell them? “Learn to love your delete key!” And on that note, I leave him to get back to his editing.

MEN MATTER
Auckland on Air: Martin Devlin Hauraki 99FM Interview: Timothy Giles
V: Congratulations on your new job. M: A job? To be honest I have never considered working on the radio to be a ‘job’. Certainly not a real one! I’m on air at Hauraki weekday mornings, 6-9am. Every other waking minute gathering and slaving to research and produce another three solid hours of hard graft and shoulder-to-the-wheel for the next day. I have it pretty bloody good really! V: Are you a morning person? M: The alarm is truly the one and only thing about this job that sucks. It’s always too soon, too early and too loud. V: Are you a family man? M: My pride and joy are my two boys Charlie and Freddy.
Radio Live; then the revamping of Hauraki. Each have been a privilege and an honour. V: Your tip for the next Pope? M: All I know is the chances of it being our bloke from NZ are about the same as it being a woman. V: New or classic rock? M: Classic, old, new, reinvented, unplugged, rip the switch, off, loud, trashed, untamed, live, regurgitated, I love it all! V: Top 5 rock songs? M: Too many to mention. I can tell you my favourite concerts instead: 1) The Clash, Wellington, 1982. 2) Dwight Yoakam, Texas, 1993. 3) Beck, Wellington, 1997.
V: You’ve been a long time out of Wellington. What do love/hate about Auckland? M: Everything except the traffic and the constant road works ripping up the same footpath they just resealed last week.
V: Do you believe in a Kiwi music quota for radio? M: I remember when I did think it was absolutely utterly necessary. These days I think NZ music is alive and kicking well enough without needing the regular equivalent of Muldoon’s farmer’s subsidies, thank you.
V: You’ve returned to your music breakfast radio roots via sports and talk; what’s you favourite? M: I was one of the start-up people for the Edge Channel Z Wellington, Radio Sport,
V: So you’re the poster boy for rock loving skinny white boys? M: Stop it right there! The only skinny, white rock god in NZ is John Toogood the messiah!
V: How do you fell about being part of the Hauraki legacy? M: The station has huge history and a great story to tell. That will never change. Hauraki defines rock and roll attitude of “we fought the law and the law was an ass.” To be asked to join the relaunch was an offer I’d worked twenty years of a career for, my dream job. V: Best professional advice? M: Work as hard as you can today to earn the right to come back and do it again tomorrow. V: Best personal advice? M: Puhleeze as if I ever followed any! V: How are your New Year resolutions holding up? M: I’m still running. Is that good? V: Your hopes for 2013? M: That my boys are fit and healthy, Man United win the title and Hauraki takes off like a space rocket.

Xi’an With a history that spans 3,000 years, Xi’an is one China’s oldest and most enchanting cities. Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces
While undoubtedly modernising like the rest of the nation at an unprecedented speed, within and around its stunning ancient city walls lie immaculatelypreserved remnants of a spectacular civilisation past. The first capital of a unified China under the Emperor Qin, by the seventh century, Xi’an was the largest city on earth. It is the birthplace of Chinese opera, the gateway to the legendary Silk Road that binds Asia, North Africa and Europe and home to a certain Terracotta Army. The sheer scale of the site upon which the Terracotta Warriors rest is breathtaking. Discovered as recently as 1974 – and still in the painstaking process of excavation – each soldier is unique and life-sized, originally painted in vibrant colours now worn away through the millennia. It is estimated that 700,000 workers in the third century BC created these statues whose purpose was to guard Emperor Qin in the afterlife, his pyramid mausoleum is so deeply fortified by row upon row of the mythical warriors that it is a further bus trip away. Mount Hua to the east of Xi’an is one of China’s Five Great Mountains and boasts a rich Tao history. You’ll find temples at the base during the climb as well as the summit – which is split into five separate peaks. There is a cable car to take you to
the summit but, for those who have the time. the trek is unforgettable. It is tough going though – at times you’re verging on climbing rather than walking – with safety chains attached throughout. Hardcore thrill seekers can traverse a narrow wooden plank fixed to a cliff face at the mountain’s top.
XI’AN: THE LOWDOWN Population: 8.5 million Getting around: Great Metro system, taxis and buses are abundant but prone to traffic jams! Bikes are available for hire throughout the city and most sights are within walking distance.
Xi’an’s ancient walls provide a rather more relaxing jaunt, though it’s far more fun to hire a bicycle to circumnavigate the Old City’s 14 kilometre perimeter. The Big Goose Pagoda, the most famous of Xian’s many religious sites is around 1500 years old and come nightfall is illuminated by a magical fountain display set to classical music.
Best time to visit: March to May or September to October are the most comfortable climates.
Markets are abundant throughout the city, the most popular being Xiyang Shi in the cobbled streets of the Muslim Quarter, which is also home to some of the city’s best eating, not to mention the Great Mosque. The Shaanxi Museum offers a fascinating insight into this great ancient capital, the Daming Palace is the most majestic in town and the Forest of Stone Steles Museum boasts the country’s largest collection of ancient texts, including the works of Confucius. But the most foreboding of the city’s sights are the grandiose structures of the Bell and Drum Tower, beating at Xi’an’s wondrous heart.
THE SILK ROAD
Accommodation: The Shangri-La, Golden Flower and Kempinski Hotels are among Xi’an’s most luxurious. Getting there: There are 35 direct flights each week from Auckland, on airlines including Air New Zealand, Qantas, Cathay Pacific and China Airlines. As the starting point of the northern route of the Silk Road, linking China to Rome, Xi’an has benefited from a great cultural diversity that remains to this day. Total length is 6,500 km. It originates from the 1st Century BC and takes its name from the prosperous silk trade of the Han Dynasty. Other goods soon followed and it became a means of communicating knowledge of the arts, technology, religion and languages. Legendary explorer Marco Polo was one of the first Europeans to make it all the way to China. It remains one of the iconic journeys for travellers to do this day, both by road and rail.

GARDENS AND PETS
THE DALTONS SCHOOL OF GARDENING
Preparing your Autumn and Winter Beds The end of summer is the best time to start preparing your autumn and winter garden beds, planning what vegetables you want to grow and when to plant them. It’s also an opportunity to rebuild structure and nutrients back into the soil. Daltons share some tips below to help prepare your garden so it’s in top condition to support your winter crops throughout the colder months.
BED PREPARATION
Firstly remove any dead or old plants and weeds then evenly apply a generous layer of Daltons Nutrients Enriched Compost, approx 40L per 2m2, and thoroughly work it into the soil. Try working it in to 1 ½ spade depths to ensure that the soil has been fully aerated and the compost has been mixed in thoroughly. This improves the organic matter, nutrient content and microbial activity of the soil.
SOWING WINTER SEEDS
As a rule of thumb, plant the seed as deep as the size of the seed, so a 1cm size seed should be planted 1cm deep. Plant seeds at the correct time of the year for your planting zone – check the seed packet for details. Some seeds or seedlings won’t survive a frost, and others will need a cold period to germinate so check if seeds need to be sown directly into the garden or indoors before being transplanted after germination. If sowing in trays, a good tip is to use Daltons Premium Potting Mix at the bottom of the tray, adding a layer of Daltons Premium Seed Mix at the top. As the seedling grows the roots will reach the potting mix which has fertiliser giving seedling nutrients for strong healthy growth. To stop overcrowding in the garden, sow seeds the correct distance apart, including row spacing.
seedlings by putting trays or pots outside in the sun for an hour a day in a warm spot. Extend this by an hour every day over 10-14 days and bring them inside each day, especially at night.
FROST
During winter, temperatures can drop suddenly overnight and wipe out sensitive young plants. Typically a forecast of 4 degrees or lower means you should protect against a frost. Use a garden cloche or throw a frost cloth (even old net curtains) over the garden. You can also use flower pots, or jars and put them upside down over individual plants. Always remove coverings in the morning.
EMPTY BEDS
Don’t let beds sit empty and exposed over the winter months. Sow a green crop or apply a blanket cover to add nutrients into the soil and protect beds over winter. Sow common green crops such as lupin and mustard directly. Once grown, dig them back into the soil and leave to break down for six to eight weeks before planting anything else. Alternatively blanket cover beds by applying a thick layer of mulch, such as Daltons Garden Mulch or other forms of mulch like manure, autumn leaves, or wood chip. The next Daltons School of Gardening workshop is on Saturday 16th March at Bunnings Store, Glenfield. Join Xanthe White for an afternoon of practical advice, fun and tips from the experts. For more info go to www.daltons.co.nz
GERMINATION TIMES
A seed is planted and after absorbing water, exposure to temperature, light, oxygen and time, it is stimulated and begins to sprout and grow – this is called germination. Different seeds take different lengths of times and conditions to germinate – check your seed packet for guidance. It’s important to water consistently for even germination and growth, but avoid overwatering as it can rot the seeds and cause damping off. This is when seedling death is caused by fungal diseases, including some root rots. An application of Daltons Tricoflow spray or Tricolphel granules can help protect against this.
WAIT FOR THE “TRUE LEAVES”
When seedlings sprout, they form two sets of leaves that almost look like clover. After a few days, a third single leaf will emerge that does not look like the others - this is the first true leaf. Once this leaf emerges you can start thinning out or transplanting.

Pricking or thinning out is removing any surplus seedlings to stop overcrowding; giving air, space and room to grow. Thin out as soon as seedlings are big enough to handle it by using your thumb and forefinger to pull them out or nip them off at ground level to avoid disturbing the roots of other seedlings. Always keep the healthiest looking seedlings.

HARDENING OFF
Saturday 16th March 2-4pm
If growing seedlings indoors in trays or pots, they will need to be “hardened off” before you transplant them into the garden. It’s an important step and if not done properly will result in wilting or death from the sudden change of conditions. Acclimatise

GROWING PUPPIES AND KITTENS INTO HEALTHY HAPPY COMPANIONS We are often asked if it’s safe to grow puppies and kittens on a raw food diet. Our answer is …. It most certainly is, if you are following a balanced raw food diet plan. The essentials for a growing pet are meat, bone, organs and green tripe. Our pet’s wild ancestors have been getting it right for millions of years. Calcium and phosphorous are the two minerals that we worry about most in the growing animal. When your calcium and phosphorous sources are raw natural food, you will be supplying both these elements in a highly digestible form that the body can easily use. The calcium and phosphorous in a raw meaty bones diet is provided by the bones and the blood of prey animals. Natural raw bones contain the right balance of these important minerals for your growing pups and kittens.
TAILS OF THE UNEXPECTED: DOG VS. COW We often see the results of dog vs. cat at the Animal Emergency Centre. Dog vs. automobile and big dog vs. little dog are also commonplace. Given that our Mt Albert hospital is in an urban area, cases of dog vs. cow are rare, but nothing surprises us. Ninks, the cute little critter sitting here on her Mum’s knee, became frustrated watching the farm dogs rounding up cattle, and escaped to join the fun. She drew herself up to her full 25 cm height, and raced toward the frisky heifers. In the midst of the confusion and excitement, Ninks failed to see a cow cavorting behind her. Her tiny 5kg frame was crushed beneath a misplaced hoof, causing damage to her lungs and filling her chest cavity with air. With the air compressing her lungs, Ninks began having terrible trouble breathing. Her distressed owners initially sought help from their vet in Pukekohe, and from there Ninks was transferred to the Animal Emergency Centre for stabilisation. A drain was inserted which allowed for the intermittent removal of air until the lung injury healed. Her tiny form crowded by tubes, Ninks lay lifeless as she received fluid therapy, pain relief and roundthe-clock monitoring. After several days of intensive care with the Veterinary Specialist Group team, Ninks was well enough to have the drain removed and go home to recuperate. Ninks will be disgusted when she realises security measures at home have been strengthened to prevent a repeat of her recent escapade. She, like many small dogs, believes she is an enormous creature with superpowers! Despite their overinflated view of their size, small dog vs. big thing (whether it be sentient being or inanimate object) does not often favour the small dog! (DR LISA FERGUSON, BVSc CertVR) Clinical Manager: ANIMAL EMERGENCY CENTRE 97 Carrington Road, Mt Albert T: 09 849 2121 Please see our ad on page.96
A natural prey animal such as a rabbit is about 7-10% bone, using the natural prey of our cats and dogs as a guide, as long as you are feeding at least 10% bone in the diet, you will be getting the balance of calcium and phosphorous right. But let us worry about that, as all of our minced products are minced to include the blood and bone for optimum growth. And as an added bonus, crunching through raw meaty bones will help soothe those sore inflamed gums that occur at teething time. Come and talk to us about your growing pets, we would love to get to know them. Dr Lyn Thomson www.rawessentials.co.nz

ACTING IN THE MOMENT Useful tips for business websites. In NZ much is made of our laconic, laid-back nature. For the most part we celebrate our taciturn men and pragmatic women as being down-to-earth can-doers. We’re not an ‘in-your-face’ kind of people. We don’t believe in the hard sell. All of which I think is admirable unless, of course, you’ve got something to sell. In our studio we often re-build an existing website because our clients feel that it is under-performing on sales. That’s because, in what I can only describe as a cultural blind-spot, most of them do not ask for the sale. Instead, and in classic Kiwi fashion, they quietly present the product or service in question and then take a step back, so as not to seem too pushy. Let’s turn this situation on its head and see things from the customer’s point of view. Your customer is most likely very busy. They’re looking for something online and their patience for sifting through garbage is low. But then, hurrah! They slash their way through the brambles of the internet to reach your site, filled with the joy at discovering a product or service that they really need. Rather than give them a high-five and ask for some money while they’re still excited, you get them to go looking for a button that leads nowhere in particular, with a phone number that isn’t answered after hours and an enquiry form that hasn’t seen action in years. Why do we do this? Why do we spend money and time on our websites but then, at the final hurdle, we fail to do the obvious and ask for the sale? In doing so, we squander the excitement we’ve built in our web visitors by deferring the sale to another day, a more convenient time, or even worse, by encouraging them to visit our competitors’ websites. Every website has an opportunity to be clear and direct, to provide an outlet for the customer’s excitement and interest by engaging with you either through a sale or an enquiry immediately: turning impulse into action. Go on, seize the day.
