Editors’ Note Movember Verve As children and young women, we really believed that men were tough. Gruff voices, scratchy chins, muscular arms and those hairy legs made them seem invincible. Frequently pushing the envelope, relishing in the daring and dangerous, and stronger and faster at most sports than most women. Hugs from these giants eased life’s troubles. Even though we should have known better, in those days, it was easier to believe that men were indomitable! Having sons did a lot to change that old-fashioned mindset. It brought home the fact that men are vulnerable. Hence we are truly thankful for organisations like MOVEMBER that each year do an amazing job reminding us never to underestimate the importance of having healthy sons, partners, brothers, husbands and fathers. Typically more indifferent to their health, our men have for too long ‘toughed’ things out, when clearly sharing their problems and talking more openly about their health issues, is the only way to go. The story behind Movember is a magical tale of a shared value initiative on a global scale. It started back in 2003 in Melbourne, when 30 Mo Bros decided to change the face of men’s health by charging $10 to grow a Mo. The Mo-vement caught on good and proper and in Movember 2012, 1.1 million moustaches were registered, making Movember one of the top 100 best NGO’s globally. (To put this into perspective there are around five million NGOs in the world). The Movember vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health by supporting mental health, prostate and testicular cancer, and we are honoured to share their worthy message with you, our Verve bros and sistas.*

around the corner. There is quite a focus on design, and the story on Source Home + Object on page 18, is a must read for all you designistas out there. Birkenstocks are back! Read more about these iconic health shoes by a company with a tradition dating back to 1774, in the fashion section, which by the way ladies, also features Maxamiliano, one of the world’s most successful male models. Deborah Lee Marlow is an inspiration to one and all. She has faced, overcome and grown despite unimaginable challenges. Her entrepreneurial spirit is undeniable, and her commercial wisdom is welcomed by businesses near and far. Verve November’s layout and design is spot on and a pleasure to browse through. Thank you Jessica. We are proud of you. So without more ado, here’s hoping that you will be able to draw as much inspiration from the pages of this magazine as we have had putting it together. Enjoy. *For more information on MOVEMBER check out nz.movember.com

GET YOUR BODY READY FOR SUMMER It’s getting sunnier and warmer outside, the summer holidays are coming closer… And with them the time for swimwear, but also for a lot of guilty indulging and tempting food. There’s not much time left to get in shape, but no need to panic! Liz K Body Transformation is the perfect solution for all women who long for a toned swimwear body, but despise crowded gyms and seemingly endless, ineffective training sessions. Situated in Parnell, the personal training boutique gym exclusively for women offers a mix of innovative, effective exercise with Liz Kolovos and a bespoke nutritional plan by Kate Walker that won’t have you starving during the holidays! Starting in November, you have the chance to either give your body a short, sharp boost with the Bikini Blitz Programme (2 weeks) or to show your dedication with the intensive Summer Body Programme (6 weeks). Each week will contain 3 workout sessions of 40 minutes that focus on losing body fat (especially around the tummy area), toning up and increasing energy levels for the festive season. Numerous women embarked on these programmes last November with incredible results and most of them have continued to work out at Liz K to maintain their great shape. Contact Liz now for a personal consulting session on your goals and a customised workout programme for this summer via www.lizk.co.nz

“I never thought you could achieve that much in such a short time, but the combination of a customised exercise and nutrition plan attacks your problem zones and really does the trick!” – Jan, 48 “I guess that’s why it’s called body transformation. Liz’s programme brings a completely new dimension to exercise. I went down a dress size, and now you can actually see the muscle lines around my tummy! I’ve bought a bikini and now that I’ve got a good base, there’s no turning back.” – Louise, 41, mother of two (6 weeks Summer Body Programme) “Unfortunately, my favourite food is Christmas cake! But actually, I’ve never been hungry. Kate has taught me to be more sensible with my eating instead of overindulging. I had a broad range of options and always something up my sleeve. The combination of Liz and Kate is just great, because they work synergistically together.” – Louise on Kate’s nutrition plan

AN INVITATION TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST

V I C TO R I A

AUCKLAND

Unique city living option for forward thinking baby boomers Club Life Victoria is an innovative and exciting new concept for active, independent “baby boomers” who have a full and interesting life and want to move on from the commitment of the large suburban house and garden. The proposition is quite simple and makes a lot of sense for those smart thinking “boomers” who want the convenience of a city home with added extras and ‘like minded’ owner - neighbours . “We believe that Club Life Victoria is an idea whose time has come with sophisticated baby boomers reaching an age where you want to cash up and have alternative living which you own outright, where you are in control and where you feel comfortable,” says Fresh Realty selling agent Virgil Roberts. “Having sold apartments in Auckland for a couple of decades I perceived a need for an apartment complex that is focused on owner occupiers who have what I call “age with attitude” and providing the infrastructure to create a vibrant community.” The Club Life Victoria concept, already with resource consent, will come alive in three apartment buildings on a prime corner site in Auckland’s lower Union Street overlooking the city, the harbour and Western Park, adjacent to the City Works Depot and Sales Street with all their eateries. Club Life not only offers quality well priced freehold apartments but is also a unique lifestyle provider for forward thinking couples, singles or groups of friends who may like to live close to each other.

The facilities will be modeled on the wants and needs of the residents. They include a social swimming pool, business lounge, private bar, small movie theatre, demonstration theatre kitchen, wine cellar and tasting room, multi-function rooms and rooftop entertainment areas. All these facilities are owned by the apartment owners. There is a concienge “fixer” backed by an energetic team who take care of the needs of all those living in the complex. The fee for the operation of the owner’s facilities is incorporated in very reasonable Body Corporate fees and the Body Corporate of apartment owners have the full and last say on services and costs. There is a wide range of apartment options and the interior of the apartment can be fitted out to suit the owner with multiple choices for look, feel and colour. The proposition is very different from the current lifestyle options on offer which are often compromised apartment living where anyone can move next door or leasehold or onerous structures with no individual ownership or capital gain when the buyer wants to sell. “Many of the potential owners will still be planning to climb Kilimanjaro, trek the Amazon, write their autobiography, swim Cook Strait or create a new ‘startup’ business,” says Virgil. “Some residents will very likely have a second home in New Zealand or overseas, may travel extensively or just like the idea of planning ahead while they continue to work . These will be the residents of Club Life Victoria”.

Introductory prices from under $460,000 to around $1,5 million on a freehold unit title.

Come on your own, come with a partner or put together a group of your “like minded” friends who may be interested in this lifestyle opportunity and book for an on-site Club Life Victoria “show and tell.” Talk with

4 More Verve magazine was given the chance last month to be one of the first to drive BMW’s new 4-Series Coupe — but on arrival at the company’s Auckland headquarters, we walked straight past it. Whilst a replacement for the 3-Series coupe, this is more than a name change. The 4 is now longer, lower and wider, and with its muscular stance, at first glance we confused it with the significantly more expensive 6-Series coupe. Shared with the 3-Series are BMW’s cracking TwinPower turbo engines. The 428i runs a 2-litre four-cylinder unit, developing 180 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque and can run to the motorway maximum in just 5.8 seconds. The test 435i runs a 3-litre six-cylinder twinturbo charged engine, producing 225kW and 400Nm of torque — good for 100km/h in 5.1 seconds. Most importantly, it sounds fantastic. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. BMW’s talent these days is in building performance vehicles with low fuel consumption. Its EfficientDynamics package mean the 428i will need 6.4 litres of fuel to go 100km, the 435i 7.4 litres — by comparison the current Corolla will use 6.6. Safety is well taken care of with a dynamic stability control system, six airbags, and a

Words: Richard Edwards

system that prepares the safety equipment should it sense an incident is about to occur. Luxuries have not been forgotten. Separate climate control zones for the driver and passenger, electric sports seats and plush Dakota leather are part of the deal. Handy systems such as automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, keyless entry, parking sensors and a rear camera are standard — although the trick ‘surround view’ cameras on the test car were an option. Satellite navigation comes standard with the BMW’s large control and entertainment screen, which includes a 20Gb hard drive for music. How does it drive? That is the best bit. The BMW allows you to select drive modes, through an efficient setting, comfort and two levels of sport. This kind of tool is available in a number of cars now, but it is rare to see such a contrast between modes. The Comfort mode is that, smooth and syrupy. In Sport, the active steering and variable steering firm up and throttle response becomes significantly crisper. It works and makes the car comfy day-to-day, or a bag-load of fun when you want it. Negatives? Rear room is tight, but workable for an adult. Not a lot else. So how much? Your local BMW dealer will ask $98,000 for the 428i and $126,500 for the 435i.

Building Dreams Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces Photos: Neil Gussey

Jun Lee is a man of many talents but believes he has now found his true calling: property development. Thank you to Karakter for the Philippe Starck chair designed for the Paris Eurostar club lounge.

Having moved from Seoul to the South Island while still a teenager, Lee went on to study accounting at Canterbury University. From there he secured a position with a Christchurch accountancy firm before branching out on his own – a trade he is still heavily involved with down south and here in Auckland. Having always had an interest in property, Lee started up a small repair and renovation business in Christchurch and following the 2011 disaster, Lee’s clients sought his advice.

“What sets Lee apart is his desire to forge a longterm working relationship. Going beyond planning, design and construction, his company also offers property management services for landlords too.”

“Many of my customers lost buildings in the quake,” says Jun. “I had been their accountant for a long time. Some didn’t speak English too well. I felt awful for them and began to help out with insurance claims and take on an advisory role.” As Christchurch advanced from clean-up to construction, it was suggested that as Lee knew the ins and outs of so many of the cases, it would be beneficial to have him on board with the building programmes. “Most were working to a budget,” adds Lee. “They didn’t want to pay separate costs for project managers and so on. So I just charged one overall fee and it grew from there.”

With the establishment of the Jun Group Ltd, Lee is the all-organising, all-seeing eye of the projects. “I go to the architects and we discuss bulk and location,” he says. “The sizing of buildings and whether they are suitable for particular sites. Then we conduct surveys and questionnaires, utilising social media. Our aim is to find out what residents want to see in the area – more bars and restaurants, for example.” Next comes the consulting phase with people such as electrical, hydraulic, structural and mechanical engineers followed by the sourcing of the right construction company for that specific job. “I then like to arrange

a design meeting for everyone,” says Lee. “It is important that we should all work together as a team throughout the process, to minimise risk and improve efficiency.” His portfolio includes the $20 million Kilmore Project, commercial properties and Yoghurt Story branches in Auckland and Christchurch, including their flagship store. What sets Lee apart is his desire to forge a long-term working relationship. Going beyond planning, design and construction, his company also offers property management services for landlords too. “Our fees are very reasonable,” says Jun. “For building management we charge around 5% of the gross net, whereas many of our competitors charge up to 7%. On top of that, they add on repair costs. Ours is a flat fee.” He also has a strong network base in Asia, with many contacts looking to invest in exciting Kiwi projects. “It’s a relatively small market here,” says Lee. “But it is growing, and growing fast. I’d love to build a worldclass beach resort, not in Auckland, but on the fringe. That would really be something. That’s my dream project.”

CURRENT PROJECTS “His portfolio includes the $20 million Kilmore Project (pictured), commercial properties and Yoghurt Story outlets in both Auckland and Christchurch, including the flagship store.” For more information: www.jungroup.co.nz Ph: (09) 362 0033

Remuera’s Newest Luxury ‘Hotel’ Offering Retirement Living to the Over 65s To begin with, to live in one of its 62 apartments fitted with designer kitchens and bathrooms or enjoy the private heated swimming pool with spa facilities you must be at least 65. And there’s a café, licensed bar and restaurant with fine dining where you can entertain friends or family or enjoy the company of other residents.

The boutique hotel style of the apartments are ideal for people who are enjoying an independent lifestyle but are now looking for comfort, security and safety without the responsibility of maintaining their own homes, says manager Robyn Potter. Located close to Newmarket’s bustling high street and transport facilities, residents can easily maintain all their own social networks and activities. There is also an active programme of events in and out of the ‘hotel’ residents can choose to join.

Remuera Rise is setting new standards in retirement living with its boutique hotel atmosphere and facilities to match. With views over Rangitoto Island and the Hauraki Gulf and Mt Hobson and the city centre, Remuera Rise’s apartments feel light and spacious at every turn.

“We had a great time over breakfast in the lounge watching Team New Zealand try to bring the America’s Cup home – even if the result wasn’t what we wanted,” Robyn says.

From the basement car parks to the well-equipped gym, hobbies room and library with complementary computer access, Remuera Rise exhibits the detail to quality that might be expected from one of New Zealand’s most experienced designers and builders of retirement living environments, Life Care Residences.

One of the essential features of any quality retirement facility is a well-equipped and expertly staffed care facility offering full care through to hospital level. Remuera Rise has a 12 bed facility with 24/7 nursing

care available to residents and regular visits from a medical practitioner. Its qualified staff also offer full care services to residents in their apartments. The decision to move into retirement living for many is a big step, says Sales and Marketing Manager Michelle Wainhouse. “Often it is the children of our residents who can see that Mum and Dad will enjoy the lifestyle of Remuera Rise where their independence is assured but there is professional care on site 24/7, should it be needed.” “We know that since our first resident arrived in July, the compliments on the quality of the apartments and facilities have only flowed.” For more information please contact Michelle Wainhouse, (09) 869 2016 or mwainhouse@remuerarise.co.nz or see ad below.

Keola Homes

Westpac Auckland West’s Small Business of the Year Award Winner Keola Homes, winner of Westpac Auckland West’s Small Business Award, specialises in designing and building luxury architectural houses on difficult sections. Established in 2007, just as the global financial crisis was starting, this spunky young company has nevertheless managed to perform well despite the difficult trading conditions. Husband-and-wife team Sanjesh and Sangita Lal agree that, “if anyone ever needed a challenge, start a house building company in a recession, when people aren’t even building fences!” Sanjesh Lal had spent 10 years working on large-scale civil engineering projects, but wanted to build something ‘real’, where he could innovate and see customers’ faces when their piece of land is transformed into their dream home. This combination of being a Chartered Civil Engineer as well as a Registered Master Builder and Licensed Building Practitioner means that Sanjesh Lal is able to deliver on Keola Homes’ company mission: “To be the most admired home building company in Auckland for excelling in ridiculously difficult projects that no one else wants to take on.” Sanjesh’s hard work has paid off. He says, “starting a business in such adverse conditions means you have to plan your finances and cash flow very carefully. Likewise, getting all your internal systems and processes running efficiently is essential: time is

money, and every little incremental change makes a difference to the bottom line. Because we had these extreme challenges from day one, it has forced us to work smart as well as hard.” Keola Homes is no stranger to hard work, as their core business is designing and building homes on steep and difficult sections in Auckland. For example, Keola Homes has built houses over a creek, on extremely steep sites that have geotechnical and structural issues, and on rock – where special foundations were needed. As well as winning the Small Business of the Year Award, Keola Homes was also a finalist in the Excellence in Innovation Award. For more information visit www.keola.co.nz

Women in Business– The Wholesaler, The Retailer and The Space Holder Words: Inger-Lisa Hurst

The concept takes a moment to get your head around, but once you understand it, Source Home + Object is a logical, practical and inspirational set up. Source Home + Object is an Ellerslie based split-level showroom. Upstairs showcases 11 wholesale companies all of which have a gorgeous range of fashion, homeware and lifestyle products available for retail stores. This is also where the retail business Antiques and Interiors is located. This is the floor where retailers and designers come to do their buying. Downstairs is also open to the public. This area is called the General Trading Co. Not only a beautiful retail store they also run free ‘General Knowledge’ sessions every Saturday on subjects like crafting, bee keeping, buying antiques and lots more. Verve spoke to three women who collaborate to make Source Home + Object what it is today – a beautiful space which is “showcasing wholesalers at their best.”

Debbie Stevens — The Space Holder The concept for Source was born in July 2012, when Debbie’s wholesale business Nelson and Co. was growing and she realised she needed more space. Debbie decided to create a new experience for buyers, different to the traditional gift fair, where buyers could mix with wholesalers in a boutique environment. “I thought that if I was looking for this kind of experience, I knew others must be as well,” says Debbie. Retail store, The General Trading Co. was set up a year later when Debbie continued to feel disheartened turning shoppers away at the door. “We had the product here,” says Debbie, “so we reconfigured

the warehouse space to create a retail space and selected some product from the upstairs wholesalers. Each week we have fresh market flowers, making us the only ‘florist’ in Ellerslie. We also run a free general knowledge seminar on all kinds of topics, including bee keeping, crafting with vintage book pages, energy efficiency and buying antiques.” Debbie describes Source as a “halo business,” where you may come in looking for something specific, but you will leave feeling inspired by the diversity. For more information visit www.sourcehomeobject.com

Sharon Kempthorne —The Retailer Sharon’s business Antiques and Interiors, established in 2011, is a business built on passion. “For as long as I can remember, antiques and beautiful objects with a sense of history have been my passion,” says Sharon. “It’s in my DNA, my mother also developed a career in antiques retailing.” Sharon sources her collections from Europe, returning to New Zealand and showcasing her finds to designers and the public through Source Home + Object. “Sharing a great facility [Source Home + Object] with other like-minded businesswomen is invaluable and the concept offers flexibility; even if I’m not there, I know my customers will be so well looked after,” says Sharon. Sharon has her own dedicated retail space

Alison Nottingham — The Wholesaler Over the last eight years, Alison has been building up what is now an internationally successful fine linen business, Biannca Lorenne. “I named the business after our daughters, Bianca and Lauren,” says Alison. “The business idea came about nearly 20 years ago when I became disillusioned in my accountancy career and the inability to be creative.” “We now wholesale our brand to independent boutique homeware retailers and interior designers throughout New Zealand, Australia and the UK,” says Alison. “Source Home + Object is a wonderful and unique concept for New Zealand where we have a permanent trade showroom all year round. We used to exhibit at the New Zealand trade fairs twice a year. Now we can have all of our

product available for buyers to see all the time and our trade customers can take their clients to see the entire collection together.” Alison’s new summer linen collection, Verdura, features vibrant fuchsia, fresh aqua, antique green and romantic petal pink. “The collection is inspired by everyday botanical discoveries, collecting precious keepsakes, hand painted chinoiseries, toile de jouys and exquisite lace,” says Alison. “Our clients love that our collections are the finest quality timeless heirlooms that work back with each other collection after collection.” To view the summer Verdura collection visit www.biancalorenne.co.nz

upstairs at Source Home + Object, which fits in well with designers and the public alike. Sharon has recently received her latest shipment of antiques from Europe and is excited to showcase her collection to the New Zealand market. “I’m delighted with our latest shipment,” says Sharon. “The range of furniture and decorative items will suit New Zealand homes so well. I’m particularly pleased with the diverse range of lovely seating we have as well as some very unique character pieces in this collection, such as the British General Post Office sorting basket. It will be a real feature piece in someone’s home. For more information visit www.antiquesandinteriors.co.nz

AT HOME WITH KARAKTER: Arne Norell 1917-1971

Born in Asele, Lapland, Norell went on to become one of Swedens leading furniture designers. He started his own workshop in Stockholm in 1954 and later moved to Småland in 1958 where he founded Möbel AB Arne Norell.

BUYING GUIDE / The quality of materials used are the key. Arne Norell furniture has great quality leather and robust bases and frames. / Look for pieces with a “MOBEL AB – Arne Norell” manufacturers label attached e.g. on Ilona sofas. / Watch for wear on leather buckles/straps etc. although these can be repaired. Karakter sources the finest examples of mid twentieth century furniture and accessories from across Europe and is delighted to have on offer pieces by this celebrated designer.

His most renowned and appreciated piece is the easy chair ‘Ari’, designed in 1966 and which in 1973 was posthumously awarded “showpiece of the year” by British Furniture Manufacturers.

See advertisement in Verve’s market place on page 105.

Arne Norell furniture demonstrates his commitment to modernist ideals. Characteristically all pieces combine elegant simplicity and integrity with a blend of multiple materials, often metal, turned wood and high quality leather. Many of the models Norell designed came into production after his death and are manufactured by the same company, now under the name Norell Möbel AB. The collection remains as modern, classic and timeless today as it was when designed almost 60 years ago. We like the chairs because they are made with quality leather, often buffalo hide. This gives great strength and the ability to last, allowing a gorgeous patina to form. The chairs have great ergonomics and a relaxed lounging feel.

French Capsule Wardrobe for the Festive Season: Five tips from the French Style Icons Words: Claire Chateau

“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous”, said Coco Chanel. Summer means it’s time to venture into our closet for a wardrobe refresh. Like the French do, think functional and high on style for the festive season. Find below five essential rules and tips stolen from French style icons for a minimalist French closet with sophistication.

LESS IS MORE “It is true that in France, women put on fewer things. If they have a necklace, they don’t put on earrings; if they have nail polish, they don’t put on all their rings and all their bracelets.” – Ines de La Fressange, fashion designer and author of Parisian Chic. A wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear? Does this sound familiar? Be brave, clear out and make space in your closet by just sticking to a few well-chosen and quality essentials. Pare your wardrobe down to ten basics garments. Spend more time in the selection of fewer individual pieces and invest more money in quality garments that you truly enjoy. FAVOUR TIMELESS CLASSICS “I start each collection thinking how I can refresh my classics.” – Jean Paul Gautier, haute-couture designer, former creative director of Hermès. Having a set of classic key pieces is the main idea for the elegance you’re aiming for. Favour garments that have proven fashionable over the years. Versatile close you’ll wear over and over again in many different ways and that fit your lifestyle are key. Must-haves include a petite robe noire or LBD, a well cut blazer, a pair of flattering and stylish jeans, a black shirt, a plain white t-shirt and a trench. PREFER NEUTRAL TO BRIGHT “Who knew that black and navy were made for each other? No one – until Yves Saint Laurent gave us permission to boldly go where no one had gone before…” – Ines de la Fressange in Parisian Chic. Kaleidoscope, floral and prints are harder to mix and match. Main clothing garments should be of neutral colours: black-white, navy, cream and grey. Use the bright

colours from the latest fashion week’s catwalks for accessories. Try orange scarves, bicolor bags or a bright jacket with classic Breton stripes underneath. DARE GLAMOUR AND CHIC. “It was such a relief to discover that I could be sexy. It made me much more open.” – Lou Doillon, model and Givenchy icon. The key rule to glamour and chic is to pay attention to fit. Avoid baggy garments and favour shape. Classic, yet again, is best. A proper fit will allow more combinations. For jewellery, avoid dangly chains and pendants. A classic pearl necklace will be more style effective. SHOES FOR ALL OCCASIONS “A shoe has so much more to offer than just to walk.” – Christian Louboutin, French footwear designer.

The right pair of shoes can make an outfit. When it comes to updating your shoe-robe, think that, like for clothes, higher-prices mean higher-quality. Mix comfortable heel heights and classic style. Your basics for spring will include a pair of leather ballet flats, classic heels, wedge and leather sandals. You’re aiming for a selection of shoes that work with existing and planned outfits.

You’ll find that, as daunting as it may seem, creating a French inspired capsule wardrobe for summer actually feels liberating. You’ll add chic to your closet and enjoy stress-free mornings getting dressed. Review. Play around your essentials and edit for each stage of life and any occasion. Feel good about what you’re wearing and have fun creating your own signature style.

Iconic Kiwi Constructions

Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

While New Zealand is lauded for its spectacular natural beauty, some of its man-made landmarks get overlooked. So Verve decided to pay tribute to a handful of the country’s engineering and architectural marvels. SKY TOWER Standing proud at 328m, Auckland’s Sky Tower not only eclipses a certain Parisian one, but is the tallest free-standing structure in the southern hemisphere. The award-winning design, the brain-child of Craig Craig Moller architects, celebrated its sixteenth birthday in August. It took less than three years to build and was actually completed six months early. Each year it attracts over half a million visitors, including Beyoncé who last month jumped from it twice. TE PAPA This vibrant monument, New Zealand’s national museum and art gallery, boasts enough reinforced steel to reach Sydney and sits on 150 lead and rubber shock absorbers to protect it from quakes. Te Papa houses three rugby fields worth of floor space spread over six stories and cost $300 million to build. Its north-facing Maoriinspired façade watches over the harbour, while its European face looks south over the city, sporting a grid design to reflect the pattern of immigrant settlements. TREATY HOUSE One of the country’s most important historical sites, the house is also one of the country’s oldest. Famed as the site of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, five years earlier the grounds also witnessed the signing of the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand. Originally built for Brit James Busby and his family in 1833, it was handed to the public by the Governor-General Lord Bledisloe in 1932. It’s now the focal point of Waitangi Day commemorations and is New Zealand’s most-visited historical construction. AUCKLAND MUSEUM Resembling a grand, ancient temple, the mighty Auckland Museum takes pride of place watching over the city from the Domain. Under its impressive glass and copper dome rests the world’s finest collection of Maori and Pacific

Island treasures, whilst around it are tributes to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars. LARNACH CASTLE New Zealand’s only castle, it was completed at the end of the 19th century on the outskirts of Dunedin. It served as the residence of William Larnach and his family – some of whom are said to now haunt it. Materials from across the globe such as Italian marble, Welsh slate and French glass were used in the construction, along with native New Zealand woods like honeysuckle, kauri and rimu. The dream home, however, soon became one of nightmares, as the Larnachs were struck by a series of premature deaths and tragedies. BEEHIVE The complex houses four separate constructions: Parliament House, Parliament Library, Bowen House and the Executive wing, commonly referred to as the Beehive. Much of the site was razed by fire in 1907, and John Campbell and Claude Paton designed the replacement neo-classical Parliament House. The library dates back to the late 1800s while the 22-storey office block, Bowen House, is a more modern affair. The legendary Beehive was designed by Sir Basil Spence and built over ten years. It stands at 72 metres and has fourteen floors, four of which are below ground. NATIONAL TOBACCO COMPANY BUILDING Napier is renowned for its Art Deco architecture and this is undoubtedly its coolest. Formally known as the Rothmans Building, the structure was designed by the legendary Louis Hay, commissioned by Gerhard Husheer following the devastating quake of 1931. Completed two years later, it is adorned with roses, raupo and vine leaves. Beyond extravagant carved wooden doors rests a foyer of marble and oak, topped by an atmospheric lead-light skylight dome.

SPEIGHT’S BREWERY A true Kiwi stalwart, the Speight’s Brewery has occupied the same grounds on Rattray Street, Dunedin, since 1876. Some would no doubt claim it holy. Founded by Charles Greenslade and William Dawson in an abandoned bottling and malt plant, within just a few years, their brews were garnering overseas acclaim, most notably being awarded the Gold Medal Ale at Sydney’s International Exhibition in 1879. HARBOUR BRIDGE The idea of linking the North Shore to the south over the Waitemata harbour had been floated since the turn of the 20th century, but it wasn’t until midway through it that the project got under way. Construction began in 1956, using steel pieces that were fabricated in the UK. Three years later, the ‘coat-hanger’ opened. Over 60 million vehicles cross the kilometre-long bridge each year and in 1992 participants of the Auckland Marathon traversed it for the first time. Let’s hope those plans for cycle and pedestrian lanes come to fruition soon. DUNEDIN RAILWAY STATION Opened in 1906, this was at the time the country’s busiest station. The breathtaking Flemish-styled structure was designed by Sir George Troup, and sports pink granite columns and a roof adorned with copperdomed cupolas and Terracotta shingles imported from Marseilles. The 37-metre clock tower dominates the area. Inside, there is a mosaic floor consisting of three quarters of a million Minton tiles and a frieze crafted from Royal Doulton porcelain.

AUCKLAND GARDEN DESIGNFEST BURSTS INTO BLOOM With summer well and truly on its way, many of us are starting to spend more time outside in our backyards, gardening, having barbeques, or simply catching a quiet moment. If you’re thinking about how to use your outdoor spaces, considering a change, or simply looking for a dose of inspiration, the Auckland Garden DesignFest 2013 is a great place to start.

Running from 16-17 November, the festival consists of 25 spectacular residential gardens open across the Auckland region. Visitors can purchase all-weekend passes to catch any and every property on the list, or for those more pressed for time, single garden tickets are also on offer. The festival’s joint chairperson, Rose Thodey says, “this second biennial festival is a celebration of the extraordinary design talent we have in Auckland. Whether you’re an experienced landscaping professional, a first-time gardener, or somewhere in between, we’re certain these gardens will entertain and delight.” Visitors to the festival will have the chance to explore the grounds of each garden, taking in views, examining plantings, and gaining a first-hand glimpse into the difference good design can make to an outdoor environment. The designers of each garden will also be onsite and available to answer any questions. Some of the many highlight gardens include:

• Two properties by award-winning landscape designer Xanthe White – an architecturally-inspired, productive garden in Herne Bay, and a flowering native garden in Mt Eden. • An urban Parnell sanctuary, created by Pascal Tibbits. This small garden connects two distinct spaces together using oldfashioned lime hoggin. • A classically styled, expansive Remuera garden conceived by designer Ron Dykman, with dramatic entrance gates and an unfolding series of spaces for artwork, play and eating! • Relaxed, multi-purpose outdoor settings by Gary de Beer, on a Remuera property. This garden includes an

outdoor fireplace, productive garden, and a ‘wow factor’ entrance. “We’re so grateful to all of the owners who are opening their gardens up to the public,” adds Thodey. “This is a unique opportunity for people to take a peek into others’ properties, see how they live, and understand how they might apply some of their design ideas to their own gardens.” For those looking to take in the gardens with the guidance of expert guides, bus tours are offered and cater to a range of interests, beginning and ending at historic Highwic in Newmarket. FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Good Enough To Eat

As summer rolls around, weekend picnics, lazy late lunches and casual al fresco evenings will soon be on the calendar. For a little change of season culinary inspiration, Verve has scoured the internet for some top foodie websites from here and abroad.

Words: Sara Bunny

WHAT KATIE ATE www.whatkatieate.com

EAT HERE NOW www.eatherenow.co.nz

Talented Katie Quinn Davies uses her website not only as a platform to share her love of food, but also her interest in photography. On this award-winning blog, you won’t find the sort of foodie pics that feature pristine white crockery and shiny new gadgets – Katie’s style is more about rustic enamel plates and crumbs on the bench. Other shots capture romantic Italian coastlines, vignerons tending the vines, happy home cooks, and farmers preparing their wares for markets. The stunning images speak of the power of food to inspire, cross cultures and bring people together.

A one-stop shop for all the latest goss on Auckland’s dining scene, Eat Here Now is the brainchild of local food writer Simon FarrellGreen. The website is a well-considered directory of a wide range of eateries, with the front page proclaiming: “we only review places we like or think you should know about – we eat constantly, so you don’t have to.” The culinary curious can navigate the site by area or restaurant style, or solve dining dilemmas by browsing by occasion. This section has ideas to suit a range of scenarios including “annoying large group,” “boozy catch-up,” “take your parents” and even “impress people with your backstreet knowledge”.

TROTSKI & ASH www.trotski-ash.com

HUNGRY AND FROZEN www.hungryandfrozen.com

Straight from the uber stylish foodie haven that is Melbourne, this sophisticated blog looks like a glossy magazine. The blog’s creators, friends Sarah Trotter and Romy Ash, are both self-taught cooks who say they are learning from “taste, mistakes, and the knowledge of our family and friends.” Recipes include lots of classic baking, light meals, salads and summery treats like ‘champagne strawberry granita’ and ‘banana colada popsicle’.

The pet project of financially savvy foodie Laura Vincent, this blog started off as a way to share the delicious dishes she created whilst a poor student at Victoria University in Wellington. With her student days over, Laura’s blog has continued to expand into an impressive collection of recipes, all carefully catalogued alongside her light-hearted tales of life in the windy city. Don’t be put off by the title, the website is packed with recipe ideas for all seasons.

VERVE INTERVIEWS

Jo Seagar Jo Seagar has a big personality. Engaging – definitely. Talented – without a doubt. Dynamic – for sure. Outgoing, friendly and with a lovely sense of humour, Jo is most definitely one unforgettable lady! Verve felt honoured to be able to catch up with her the other day over coffee. Verve: Tell us a bit about your latest cookbook, A Little Bit Of What You Fancy. Does it differ from previous Jo Seagar books, and how does it embody your food philosophy? Jo: It doesn’t differ that much. My style remains short, snappy and achievable. I hate recipes to go over the page and prefer to limit them to three of four ingredients max. A Little Bit Of What You Fancy is a new collection of ideas, a fresh approach – written with real people in mind. V: What is your favourite recipe in your new book? J: Gosh – I have so many.

I get inspiration from all over; I travel a lot – simply love Italy and Morocco, and always come back home filled with ideas. I have a cooking school, and preparing for the different courses sees me thinking up new recipes and ways of doing things, and then there is Pinterest! I am a real devotee and run into all sorts of ideas there. The new recipes have to be tested and tried, till they are just right. Then I work with my photographer, Jay (he and I have done four books together) and a great food stylist, who gets everything looking perfect on the plate.

I love the very quick and easy 45-second microwave meringue. Virtually no prep, with an end result that is light as air, crispy and crunchy. Simply wonderful in an Eton mess kind of dessert or sandwiched together with espresso-laced ganache, or served with fresh summer berries and cream.

My latest book was styled at an iconic Kiwi holiday house, a real retro dream.

Another one is for dead simple microwave popcorn, jooshed up and tossed together with a generous splash of truffle oil. You will receive endless praise for this one, I promise.

V: Do you have a fave cookbook author/ chef? J: I like so many – I don’t think I could pick one favourite. I am fond of Nigella. She is the whole package. Annabelle (Langbein) and Allyson (Gofton) are also wonderful food writers. I have always enjoyed Paula Deen and Martha Stewart too.

Then there is a yummy summer pawpaw salsa, plus a whole lot of ways to handle healthy grains, e.g. quinoa fritters or farro, feta and watermelon salad. V: In a digital world, is there still place for the printed recipes? J: I can’t imagine a world without hard copy recipe books. The layout, the styling and the photos are always such an inspiration and a pleasure to peruse. Having said that I have had a crack at an e-book publication, called Great Baking Recipes (ten of my most popular baking recipes), and so far it has sold incredibly well. So for now there is definitely room for both print and digital cookery books. V: Take us through the cookbook process. J: It’s quite an exercise.

After the photography is complete, it is then up to the publisher to take all of the images and recipes and transform them into a sellable book.

V: When you eat out, where do you best like to go? J: I eat out mostly when I am on tour, and then I like to try new places and new dishes. I really enjoy casual dining and love what Al Brown is doing. Our café, Seagars at Oxford is also a favourite of mine: it serves the best shepherds pie ever! V: We all know a lot about ‘cooking Jo’. Can you tell Verve readers a little about ‘behind-the-scenes-Jo’? J: I do many things most people don’t know about. For instance I fly vintage aeroplanes, like tiger moths and piper cubs. I volunteer for St Johns in Oxford. I am also a patron of Hospice. I love to read books and enjoy

all sorts of crafty and creative things. When I am at home I get around on a gorgeous lady’s bicycle, with a thermos carrier and a unmissable crash helmet. V: What is your overriding philosophy on life? J: Live each day to the max. Get maximum effect for minimum effort. Eat, drink and be merry.

WIN WITH VERVE UP FOR GRABS: A copy of A Bit Of What You Fancy Interested? To enter this competition is simple. Like our page on Facebook, facebook.com/VerveMagazine, then visit our website, www.vervemagazine. co.nz and click on the competitions tab at the top of the page. Good Luck!

INGREDIENTS 1 egg white 2 cups icing sugar TO SERVE: 300 ml cream, whipped fresh fruit and mint sprigs, to garnish

METHOD Place the egg white in a bowl and sift in the icing sugar. Mix gently — do not beat or whisk. Use your hands to bring the mixture together. It is quite a stiff paste but keep kneading and working it. Don’t be tempted to add any more egg white. Divide into 16 pieces. Line the microwave turntable with a circle of non-stick baking paper. Position 4 pieces at a time on the turntable and microwave for 45–50 seconds. (Older microwaves may be less powerful than

modern 1000-watt machines so it may take up to 20 seconds longer). Repeat until you have 16 meringues. Cool completely on a wire rack. Sandwich pairs of meringues together with whipped cream and garnish with fresh fruit and mint sprigs.

Notes: They are easy to serve with whipped cream, to make an Eton messstyle dessert with summer berries, or to use over fruit as a crunchy ‘snowy’ crumble. Sandwich together with thick Greek-style fruity yoghurt if you don’t have cream. You can also use ice cream to make a fabulous ice-cream sandwich stack. These meringues can be quite flat and pancake-like so this is not the only meringue recipe you need. Traditional meringues still have their time-honoured place in your recipe collection!

arrived 22 years ago. But thankfully this has all changed and rosé is now on every café wine list as it deserves to be. Its versatility is its great charm; crisp and refreshing, brilliant with salads, perhaps some grilled sardines or a vegetable tart at lunchtime, delicious as an aperitif in the cool of the evening.

PROVENCE Bonjour Neighbours! What does the phrase ‘summer wine’ bring to mind? I am willing to bet that somewhere in your imagination there will be a deep blue sky, cicadas singing in the heat, a ruined castle on top of a little hill covered in wild herbs, yourself at a shady café table and in your hand, a glass of palest salmon pink rosé. This is the romantic vision of Provence, famous throughout the world for its delicate, floral, bone dry roses that are perfect as aperitifs or with any summer food you wish to propose. Coming from France, where everyone drinks rosé, it was at first hard for me to understand why it was not so popular here when I

The rosés of Provence are not just ‘pink wine;’ they are elegant, restrained, mineral and very beautiful both to taste and to look at. Mostly they are palest pink, ranging from the barely-there tint known as ‘onion skin’ to a deep salmon. They get their colour when the winemakers let the crushed red grapes sit in their skins for a very short time before pouring off the tinted juice. I must tell you, in France it is against the law to try to make rosé just by mixing white and red wines together. Horreur! Finally, the question of celebrations. If you have a special occasion, look for some rosé Champagne. There is nothing more joyous; it is completely irresistible! TIRED OF COFFEE? CAFFEINE SPRAY OFFERS ENERGY BOOST For those that don’t like the drink, Sprayable Energy is an alternative in the form of a small canister that delivers caffeine directly through the skin. Consumers’ need for that extra bit of pep in the morning has turned energy drinks into a massive market, so much so that we’ve even seen anti-energy drinks like Mary Jane’s Relaxing Soda offer an antidote for those with high-octane working lives. Some still swear by the traditional morning coffee, but for those that don’t like the drink, Sprayable Energy is an alternative in the form of a small canister that delivers caffeine directly through the skin. The portable spray is a concoction that is odorless and colorless, designed to be sprayed onto the neck in four short spritzes and offering the equivalent dose of caffeine as a cup of coffee. According to its creators, the solution doesn’t give users the jitters – like coffee and energy drinks can – and offers a slower release to avoid the crash that can be felt when the effects of a coffee fade. The spray also means that users don’t have to endure the taste and aftertaste of coffee if they don’t like it, and also benefit from the lack of calories by not ingesting it. Each canister offers 40 doses but costs around the same price as 10 coffees. Although less romantic than the ritual of making a morning coffee, Sprayable Energy makes getting an energy boost more easy and efficient, potentially helping productivity in the office. Could this innovation cut into the market for energy products?

THE ART OF TABLE CONVERSATION Words: Brittany Jordt

In this day in age, when everywhere you look people are staring at their smart phones, the art of table conversation may seem all but lost. However, there is some hope for salvaging table talk. Here are some tips to get you bantering with the best of them the next time you manage to sit down with your family, significant other, attend a cocktail party or social dinner.

39

Music: A little music in the background helps add ambiance, but make sure to choose something conducive to conversation, like classical or folk music. Also keep the volume at a reasonable level so that everyone can hear each other. Tell stories: Stories are an authentic way to connect and captivate your dining companions. Funny or self-deprecating tales are always a hit – everyone loves to hear about the time you made a joke about your boss and it turned out he was behind you. A personal, interesting and amusing story helps build trust and loosens everyone up so that the conversation can become much more stimulating from there on out. Ask questions: Stay involved in the conversation by asking open-ended questions. This keeps the discourse flowing and shows other people at the table that you’re engaged in the topic being debated. Stay away from touchy subjects: Sensitive issues, like politics, are best avoided unless you are absolutely certain your friends share your views. Though a good debate can energise the table talk, subjects that people feel passionately about are likely to stir up emotions and can change healthy banter into an argument. Don’t use devices at the dinner table: There are few things worse than being out to dinner with someone who can’t stop texting. Unless it’s an emergency, using your device at the dinner table signals to the other guests that your phone is more important than the present moment. Word games: Consider fun games like Table Topics (they come in a variety of different editions, with many fun themes) which will get the conversation flowing and are also good for a laugh.

VERVE INTERVIEWS

The Roaming Dive Pete and Mo, two mates from high-school are setting out to serve the streets of Auckland with their soon to be launched food truck, The Roaming Dive. They have been inspired by the food truck industry in the United States, and look to serve their spin on classic American diner fare. We spent a couple of minutes with them to find out where their ‘drive’ is coming from. Left to right: Mo and Pete

Verve: So Pete and Mo, where did you get the idea to start The Roaming Dive? Pete: I love to cook and Mo has an excellent grasp on consumer dynamics so this just made sense. Mo: When you go overseas, markets and ‘home-styled’ street-food vendors are often the best places to dine at. We are trying to re-create something similar in Auckland. V: What attracts you to classic American cuisine? P: After a stint in San Diego I fell in love with the culture of food dives, BBQ joints and street vendors. The food was masculine, robust and very satisfying. We wanted to take that experience and add some finesse along with a touch of Kiwi influence. V: What can we expect from you? P: Expect to be served great tasting food with awesome service. M: Flavoursome, and ethically based fastfood. The produce we use will be local and free-range. V: Why free-range? P: Factory-farmed produce was never considered. It’s a farming practice that neither of us supports. V: Where can we find the Dive? P: Typically you will see us at festivals, parties, curbside, charity events, all over the show. Leading up to Christmas we are booking up with corporate Christmas

parties and will look to settle down on a few familiar spots in the new year. M: I’ll be updating our Twitter and Facebook pages daily with the locations we will be cooking from. V: Do you believe that Auckland will embrace the growing food truck industry? M: Yes! There are a few like-minded trucks operating right now, attracting a loyal clientele, of which I am one. The truck market is relatively small but in some form or another, trucks have been serving up food in New Zealand for a long time. P: Yeah, I definitely agree too. With the likes of The Lucky Taco selling the best tacos south of Mexico the path for a new level of quality has certainly been set. V: What is your favourite dish on the menu? M: The pork belly! P: Buffalo slider with truckmade hotsauce. and hand cut fries. Pete and Mo have been working towards this truck for the last 8 months – with only the paint job to go they are ready to start up and get into it. Look out for them on the streets or at festivals around Auckland. FOOD 4 THOUGHT/RECIPES

VERVE SHARES A RECIPE FROM LA CIGALE FRENCH MARKET & BISTRO

Provençal Roast Lamb This is one our favourite ways to cook lamb particularly from now on when we cook it on the BBQ. It’s easy and delicious and any leftovers are great for sandwiches the next day. For added smoky flavour to the meat, place sprigs of pohutukawa and/or rosemary on the grill at various times while the lamb is cooking.

INGREDIENTS 1 medium size leg of lamb 6 cloves of peeled and sliced garlic 2-3 whole heads of garlic (this much makes the sauce very garlicy) 1 80g jar of anchovy fillets in oil (drained) 1 250g pouch of lamb stock or 150ml of water 3-4 sprigs of fresh rosemary Freshly ground pepper

METHOD

Make small incisions all over the meat and insert the slices of garlic and small pieces of rosemary. Place the lamb in a roasting pan into which you’ve drizzled a little oil. Season the lamb with pepper and lay the anchovy fillets over and under it. They’ll melt over the meat as it’s cooking and impart a great flavour and provide the SERVES 4-6

salt – it’s not at all fishy. Even if you don’t ordinarily like anchovies, give this a try. Place the whole garlic heads and the remaining rosemary in the pan. Cook in a moderate oven or under a BBQ with a lid. A small/medium sized leg should take about 1 hour (for pink). When the meat is done let in rest covered for about 15 minutes. While it’s resting, make the sauce. Pour off excess oil or fat from the pan. Squeeze all the soft fragrant garlic pulp into it. Add stock or water. Stir, and scrape off any bits stuck in the pan and let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes. Before serving remove the rosemary sprigs. Taste and adjust seasoning. Usually no extra seasoning is needed. Serve the sauce separately with the lamb, crisp roast potatoes and a green salad.

Roast Turkey TIPS / Thoroughly thaw your turkey before cooking. / To test if your turkey is fully cooked, pierce the thickest part of the turkey thigh with a skewer. If the juices run clear the turkey is cooked. If there is still some pinkness (blood) present, longer cooking is required. / For additional cooking tips and recipes including stuffing, gravy and brining, visit www.croziersturkeys.co.nz

INGREDIENTS

Season inside and out with salt.

1 Crozier’s Turkey

If cooking with the stuffing inside the bird, lightly pack the stuffing into the main cavity and the neck end.

Salt Olive Oil 1 cup red wine 1 cup chicken stock or water A few sprigs of fresh rosemary Baking paper and foil

METHOD Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Remove the bag of giblets and the neck from inside the turkey. Set these aside for use in making the stuffing and stock for the gravy. Wash the turkey and pat dry with a paper towel.

Secure the openings with skewers or sew closed with cotton string (not plastic – it melts). Place the turkey breast-up on a rack in a roasting pan and brush it with oil. Pour the red wine with the chicken stock into the roasting pan with the rosemary. This will provide a flavourful steam during roasting to keep the turkey moist. Top up with stock or water as needed during cooking. Place a square of baking paper over the breast and then cover the bird with a layer of foil. The foil will trap moisture while the baking paper will prevent the foil from sticking to the bird.

Roast the turkey for about half of the estimated cooking time. Remove the foil and baking paper. Spoon or brush cooking juices over the bird and continue cooking for another 1½ - 2 hours, basting regularly until the turkey is golden brown and cooked through. When the turkey is ready, remove it from the oven. Carefully transfer it to a warm dish and loosely cover it with foil to keep it warm. Allow it to rest for 10-20 minutes while the gravy is prepared.

COOKING TIME We recommend a total cooking time of 15 minutes per 500g plus an extra 15 minutes when cooking at 180°C. A 5kg turkey takes approximately 2 ¾ hours. A 5 ½kg turkey takes approximately three hours.

Herbed Citrus Rolled Roast SERVES 12

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 Crozier’s 2.5kg boneless turkey roast, thawed

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C.

100g soft butter 1⁄3 cup of mixed glacé citrus peel 1 tbsp finely chopped rosemary leaves 1 tbsp finely chopped chives 1 litre orange juice 2 tbsp oil or melted butter

Mix the butter, citrus peel, rosemary and chives together and set aside. Pull back the netting from one end of the turkey so that half of it is exposed. Carefully using fingertips, gently create space under the skin by separating the skin from the flesh. In some parts the tip of a knife may help with this but work with care to avoid making holes in the skin. When the skin is loose, push and spread half the butter mixture between the skin and the flesh. Then roll the net back over the roast and repeat the procedure for the remaining half. Tie the ends of the net securely.

pepper. Cover with a lid or loosely with some foil. Pour some orange juice and some water into the base of the pan. Check on the liquid level during cooking and keep topped up with juice and/or water as needed. The recommended cooking time at 180°C is 1½ hours per kg. A 2.5kg turkey roast will take approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes. Roast in the pre-heated oven for approximately 2 hours before removing the cover and finishing the cooking. When ready, remove the turkey from the oven and the roasting pan. Cover it with foil and allow it to rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Snip off the netting then brush with a little oil or melted butter before carving.

Place the turkey on a rack in a roasting pan. Brush the top surface with a little butter or oil. Season with salt and

TIPS / Thoroughly thaw your turkey and remove the plastic packaging (but not the net) before cooking. / The ends of the netting tube are tucked in to the meat. Before cooking, it is a good idea to pull the ends of the netting out from the meat and secure them by tying in a knot or with a piece of string. /Because it is such a lean product, it’s a good idea to start the cooking under cover and add liquid to the bottom of the roasting pan to create some steam. Alternatively the turkey may be cooked in an oven bag to trap in juices and moisture. / For accuracy, the use of a meat thermometer is recommended. The internal temperature should reach 80°C. / For additional cooking tips and recipes including stuffing, gravy and brining, visit www.croziersturkeys.co.nz

Male Model Maximiliano Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Maximiliano Patane is one of the world’s most successful male models. He has been snapped in campaigns for the likes of Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, H&M and Tod’s. For the latter, he posed with Gwyneth Paltrow and the pair were shot by Mario Testino. Maximiliano counts Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and Stephen Dorff among his many friends. The Argentinian certainly has some life. “Modelling is so much more than I expected it to be,” he says. “There are constant opportunities to do incredible things. I get to meet such interesting characters and travel the globe, sometimes on a weekly basis.” The thing that makes Maximiliano most content, he tells me via email, is seeing his friends happy. Though that softness doesn’t extend to movie-watching; he doesn’t cry whilst watching films. Nothing, he says, scares him. He has a very impressive beard and I tell him so. It’s Messiah-like. “I’ve had it for nearly two years now,” he says. “It gave me a lot of great new opportunities workwise. I used to have a very different style a few years ago.” He’ll never shave it off for a job though. It will go “when the time is right.” I imagine Maximiliano stroking his beard thoughtfully as he said that. Born in Buenos Aires, he harboured dreams of becoming a tennis star as a youth, a sport he still plays. He’s a

keen painter too. After modelling, Maximiliano plans to combine that with fashion design, and has some projects already in the pipeline. It is possible, though difficult, he says, to maintain romantic relationships in an industry so full of travel and temptation, but admits it hasn’t worked for him so far. He works most of the year and likes to spend the (European) summer in Ibiza. Maximiliano talks warmly of his two supportive sisters and “amazing” parents, who allowed him the freedom to discover his own path. His path crossed that of a model’s in a restaurant one night who suggested that Maximiliano should visit an agency. He did so the next day. Within a week he was on a flight to New York. Growing up, Maximiliano says he learnt to deal with people from all walks of life, skills that serve him well now. Landing the Gucci campaign was his career high to date. And as for his favourite part of the job? The end: “It’s exhausting!”

Birkenstock: Soothing Soles for Over Two Centuries Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

Less than a decade after Captain Cook first circumnavigated these isles, on the other side of the world another European by the name of Adam Birkenstock registered as a shoemaker at his local German church. Little did he know that over two centuries later his footwear would have become a global icon worn by Hollywood legends, catwalk queens and even the odd Beatle too. “The fashion spike we are experiencing now includes the Arizona,” says Carol Monteith, Sales Manager of Birkenstock New Zealand. “It’s a wonderful sandal that’s been around since the 70s. Also, our Madrid exercise sandal is selling well in its 50th Jubilee year.” Though fashion, she says, is always an afterthought. “Birkenstock does not chase fashion, but when it does happen from time to time, it’s always fashion with functionality.” The award-winning shoemakers have, from the outset, been pioneers of orthopaedic foot-attire. “We’ve been caring for feet for over 240 years,” continues Carol, “crafting high quality footwear for all. This commitment to excellence has led to many innovations and today Birkenstock sets the standard for comfort around the world.” As far back as 1897, Konrad Birkenstock designed and manufactured the first ever

contoured insole. Five years later, he produced the first flexible arch-support for insertion into factory-made shoes. By the mid-1960s, Karl Birkenstock had finalised the original prototype of the Birkenstock sandal, now adopted by stars of sport and professionals alike. “The contoured footbed is the foundation of Birkenstock comfort,” says Carol. “Each contour is thoughtfully placed to allow natural support and movement. Our lightweight cork footbed creates a firm surface and evenly distributes the body’s weight for complete ease of comfort.” Birkenstocks are a firm favourite of those who spend their days standing, such as chefs, dentists and doctors. “The company’s sustainable trading and thinking is held in high regard too,” adds Carol. “We were the first company in the world to stop using solvents in our glues and have cut our energy consumption by 90%. We have established production guidelines that exceed worldwide standards.” While their footwear has left an indelible mark, they are determined that their carbon footprint does not. “Our sandals are crafted from natural, renewable materials such as cork, latex and jute,” says Carol. “So not only are they stylish and comfortable, they’re also fully repairable. We call it intelligent recycling.”

Your questions answered by

LOOKING SUMMER READY

Meghan Maher Repertoire’s Style Director I have just turned 65 and wonder what length summer pants I should be wearing? The most ideal pant length should always be determined by the shape of your legs and the skin and muscle tone, which is generally age dependent. The most flattering and age appropriate pant lengths are on the knee for shorts and 7/8ths or full length. Pant hemlines will always draw attention to the area of the leg that they finish on. It is vital when wearing a different pant length that you ensure that it finishes on a part of your leg that you like, ideally the narrowest part of your lower leg. I recommend that you analyse your legs in a mirror and decide on what pant length suits you best before going shopping. If you love a pant that you feel may be finishing on an unflattering part of your leg you can always try rolling them up, or let the hem down to see if the change in hemline makes a difference to how they look and feel. The 7/8th pant which is currently in fashion is a great length. It is best worn with a heel and can also be rolled up to a ¾ length and worn with a flat shoe if this suits you. Just remember 65 is the new 45 - exercise, great nutrition, body lotion and spray tans make any girls legs look fabulous no matter what her age!

Change is a tricky thing – we’re exhorted to embrace it, to see it as a positive, but I guess it depends on the type of change we are talking about. In life, some change is foisted upon us rapidly, and if it is the removal of something good, it can be hard to accept that there will be a better and brighter option just around the corner. We need some time to mourn what was. In fashion, change occurs somewhat slowly, with magazines showing us images of upcoming styles long before the weather has turned, which allows us time to adjust to what is coming up. November heralds a seasonal change as our blustery, often wet spring gives way to the longer, hotter days of summer. Although we know to expect it, somehow the change from winter’s layers into summer’s more revealing aesthetic has many of us on the back foot – myself included! I’m not quite ready for the big flesh-reveal just yet. My arms could do with a few more circuits at the gym and my legs need to put in a few more miles. That said, there’s still enough time to make the shift from slightly warmer garments to all things summer without exposing more than you want to. It’s a great option at this time of year to look to a lighter-weight jacket or blazer to layer over a more summery dress, add fake tan, and stick to a bootie rather than a sandal, and this is a whole lot easier to wear. Winter’s heavier opaque tights can now give way to bare legs – or, if you’re not that brave yet, a pair of flesh-tone sheers will do the trick. A summer weight scarf worn with a lightweight knit and print pants are a great early summer option that will keep you looking stylish, and if you are brave, a shorter hemline teamed with slouchy boots works well, too. Give a nod to the warmer season with a lighter, brighter colour palette. Trade out your black coated denim for a lighter colour, swap your deep indigo skinny jeans for a lighter toned, slouchy and ‘worn-in’ boyfriend jean. Top these with a long-sleeved but lightweight tee in lemon, melon or white, team your jeans with a heeled pair of sandals or courts without tights instead of boots and you’ll look summer-ready rather than summer-reluctant.

HEALTH

PRUDENT FACIAL ENHANCEMENT

1. Choose your plastic surgeon wisely: someone who has FRACS, is experienced, honest with you and affordable.

Words: Dr Mike Klaassen, Parnell Surgeon

2. You don’t get the Bentley result, for the Bentley price tag – believe me. 3. Take along images of how you used to look in your 30s, 40s and 50s – this will be invaluable in helping your surgeon plan your rejuvenation. 4. Have at least two comprehensive consultations and more if necessary – you should only pay for the initial consultation and this should be for a minimum of 60 minutes. 5. Decide which regions of your face you would like improved e.g. forehead, eyelids, mid-face, lower face or neck 6. Avoid Botox, dermal fillers and LASER resurfacing – they produce unnatural results, are expensive and temporary. 7. Ask for a natural, harmonious correction of your ageing features – it is about the contours. Youthful contours are full, convex and naturally beautiful. Fat grafting is a common and excellent additional technique these days.

Dr Mike Klassen, our local Parnell Surgeon has come up with these wonderful tips for women heading into their 60s If you are contemplating having surgery and would like to receive an honest and open approach to rejuvenation give Dr Mike Klassen a call. You will feel compelled to call after reading the following tips!

8. Give yourself at least three weeks to recover, have the surgery under IV sedation and local anaesthetic as a day case and don’t pay any more than $8-9K total cost. 9. Get a subtle new hairstyle after the first week, which will fool most of your nosey-parker friends. 10. Don’t feel guilty about wanting to look your best for your age and be assured it takes courage as well as some spending of money, well-earned.

Bee Young Words: Lulu Alach

No one locally has more experience in the bee product world than John Triggs, formerly known as the ‘Bee Pollen Man.’ John has been developing New Zealand’s world-famous bee products since the early 90s. John started Abeeco in 1995 and was the founding director. Now John is back in the game using his expertise to develop his new bee venom skincare range ‘Bee Pure’. Above: John Triggs

Bee venom skin care products found international fame a couple of years ago when it was discovered that they are Kate Middleton’s preferred anti-ageing weapon and have found an increasing fan base ever since. Bee venom creams are the best natural alternative to botox. The minute amounts of purified venom in the creams tool the skin into thinking it has been irritated by melittin, which is the active ingredient. The skin is stimulated to produce collagen and elastin (proteins and fibres that keep skin plumped and taut) and the overall benefit is a younger, tighter skin with fine lines and wrinkles smoothed out.

Bee venom creams are the best natural alternative to botox. The minute amounts of purified venom in the creams tool the skin into thinking it has been irritated by melittin, which is the active ingredient. Bee Pure products can also boast inclusion of 20+ UMF Manuka honey. Indigenous to New Zealand, UMF is the ‘Unique Manuka Factor’, any measure over 10 is very potent! Anti-inflammatory and soothing Manuka honey is the bonus ingredient of Bee Pure products. John said of his foray back into the market, “bees and the products they

make are my enduring passion. The Bee Pure range incorporates active bee venom from hives in the remote far north of New Zealand. Our biotechnologists have found a way to purify the venom so that it’s both potent and safe and the bees are not harmed in the venom harvesting process.” New Zealand bee products are extremely sought after in the global market. Bee populations are dwindling in the Northern Hemisphere and pollutants and overpopulation diminish the purity and potency of bee products there. John Triggs has known this for decades and is committed to keeping his products at the premium end of the spectrum by using New Zealand’s most pure and active bee-sourced ingredients. There are three products currently in the range – a face mask, used as a mask or a night cream, a serum for under makeup, and an all-important eye cream. More products are being developed and will be coming soon, including a cleanser with a difference and a lip-plumping lip balm. Bee Pure products are only available online from the official Bee Pure web store www.beepure.co.nz

THIS APP COULD GET YOU

PREGNANT!

Couples having trouble conceiving will know that the App Store is full of peak fertility monitors that may work, or may not. Backed by big data and the business nous of PayPal cofounder Max Levchin, Glow is an app that could truly increase the chances of pregnancy, and its creators are confident enough that they will pay for infertility treatment if it doesn’t. The founders of Glow believe that many would-be parents fail to get pregnant because they don’t have enough information to track their peak fertility and end up believing they can’t have children. The app lets women track their period, work out their fertile windows and see if they need to be more active in their sex lives. It also helps them to keep on top of the tasks that can help pregnancy, such as stocking up on ovulation kits and sending reminders to partners to avoid warm temperatures that can kill sperm.

“We are seeing very exciting adoption not only in the U.S., but also all across the world. And the number of people who have been telling us they got pregnant within a very short amount of time (since the app launched) is very exciting to us, too.” – Globe CEO Mike Huang Through the Glow First scheme, every couple pays US$50 a month to use the app, and must try to conceive for ten months while using it. If users get pregnant, their money has been well spent. If they’re still struggling after ten months, the money from the community fund is used to pay for treatment at an fertility clinic. Other families can then be happy in the knowledge that their money is being used to help others have a child. For more information on Glow go to www.glowing.com

ALL SMILES Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

“I actually became a dentist because I didn’t want to be a doctor,” laughs Dylan Yung of Newmarket’s Aevitas Dentistry. “It looked like a neat lifestyle, and I soon realised what a cool job it is. We get to see the impact that our treatments have, both physically and psychologically. It may sound a little cheesy, but when people used to ask me what I did for a living, I said I changed people’s lives.”

Above: Dr Dylan Yung

The reason people visit, he says, is threefold. The first – and most obvious reason – is pain. The second is because they feel guilty for neglecting their gnashers, something usually realised before a big event or holiday. The third reason is Dylan’s speciality. They want that perfect smile. “It’s funny because there are still dentists who feel cosmetic procedures of any sort are unethical,” says Dylan. “But it comes down to mental wellbeing. Health is not just about ailments, there is a significant psychological component too. We adhere to giving people what they want, and not talking them into having something they don’t need.” The sole aim of any dentist worth his salt, says Dylan, should never be financial gain. “There is an evolution in cosmetics,” he continues. “The evolution is such that when we first started doing cosmetic dentistry, lots of crowns and veneers were used, but now it’s about using as little treatment as possible.” Dylan says his quest for perfection is boundless: “I think it is important in any job to always challenge yourself. If you think you’re at the peak, then the only place to go is back down. When I don’t think there is anything else to learn, that’s when I should give up my job because I don’t think my patients are going to get the best.” They place a lot of faith in him, he says, and he takes that seriously. “That big investment is something I don’t take lightly. I won’t take on anything if I don’t believe I can fulfil someone’s dreams.” Such is Dylan’s standing he’s regularly invited to international seminars. “Teaching is not something that pays my wages, but I love it,” he says. “I love trying to inspire other dentists. Some of the techniques I use are different to those taught over the years and I’ve had some world-renown teachers teach me.” Though, Dylan says he gets a lot of feedback from his students bemoaning that they can’t quite perfectly mimic his work because of his exceptional paws: “I always thought it was because I practice a lot. But I think it was just an accident that I happen to have very good hands!”

The above article was researched on the internet – no face to face interviews involved.

What Does ‘Toning Up’ Actually Mean? I often hear: “I don’t want to build muscle I just want to tone up.” Dictionary: tone up (adverb) to make or become more vigorous, healthy, etc. exercise tones up the muscles Interestingly, the dictionary states that to tone up means to “become more vigorous.” Clients often tell me: “I don’t want to bulk-up, I just want to tone-up.” I even remember myself saying this years ago – but do we really know what we mean? So what is toning? For woman toning up is what naturally happens to ones body when we incorporate a muscle building or resistance session into a fitness regime. Toning can only happen if we build the muscle first, as this new muscles will start using the excess fat as fuel (because muscles burn more calories) and the layer of fat will slowly disappear. This will then bring the defined muscle to the surface giving a toned physique.

Some woman have more muscle tone than others and everyone will build toned muscle to what their bodies are naturally programmed for, given the right exercise. So next time you think “I want to tone up for summer,” I hope you’ll remember that you are actually saying, “I want less body fat and more lean muscle underneath” - and that you don’t get that by swinging light weights around for hours. We have to effectively condition muscles through resistance training. For men exactly the same applies – you’ll just build bigger muscles because of your testosterone levels, which allows you to stimulate more muscle growth than woman. So, toning up can only happen if we build up muscle below our layer of fat. The toning-up bit happens as the end result of muscle building up and fat burning down. Toned arms and abs appear when the excess layer of fat has started to disappear and the muscle definition comes to the surface. All-in-all, men bulk-up when muscle training and woman tone-up – so start working those muscles vigorously (remember the definition). See you next time - Melissa.

FOOD FOCUS Words: Ryan Renwick

The humble avocado, originating in South and Central America has spread rapidly over the globe during the last century and has become a household favourite.

IT’S PARTY SEASON IS YOUR SMILE READY TO SHINE?

Avocado is rich in a vast array of essential vitamins and minerals such as B6, C, E, K, folate, fibre, copper, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, phosphorus, niacin and also contains the antioxidant carotenoids – lutein and zeaxanthin. Focusing specifically on niacin and the caretenoids, here is some information on how to kick start your day with an avocado.

“It helps your body produce various sex and stress-related hormones and promotes circulation helping you feel more awake and aware.”

Have you got a special engagement coming up and want to really sparkle with beautiful white teeth? Then Parnell Dentistry are the people to see! Whether it’s a wedding, end of year event; an invite to the races, Christmas party; new year’s eve party or maybe just that ‘special date’ with someone, you will want to impress everyone with your smile. Everyone loves a great smile after all. Choose from either in-house whitening (the instant makeover) or have an at home whitening kit made up just for you.

Firstly Niacin, or Vitamin B3. The B group vitamins convert food into fuel for your body, producing energy. This can help your body use up fats and proteins that are stored in your body. B vitamins are also needed for healthy skin, hair and eyes and keep your nervous system operating properly. The last beneficial effect of niacin is that it helps your body produce various sex and stress-related hormones and promotes circulation, helping you feel more awake and aware. Secondly, antioxidant carotenoids – lutein and zeaxanthin, assist your body in protecting against age-related macular degeneration. Along with vitamin E, they have been hinted to inhibit the production of prostate cancer cells. Interestingly, the name for the avocado tree comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl, meaning testicle, referring to the fruits shape and the way the fruit hangs from trees in pairs.

Maybe you just need to be rid of those annoying tea, coffee, red wine or tobacco stains. Come and see our fabulous and popular hygienist Michelle to have these taken care of. Fed up with black/silver teeth from those old amalgam fillings? Got a gap in your smile you have wondered if you could fix? us more flexibility in transferring patients between the machines when required.” Dr Mzenda says another important feature is dose tracking. “We can use information from the daily treatment verification imaging to account for changes in patient conditions, such as weight changes, to continually provide optimum treatment plans tharoughout the treatment regime. This process maximises tumour cellkill probability while sparing critical organs.”

ARO is the first clinic in Australasia to implement the state of the art RayStation® system which enables staff to create radiation treatments with the highest precision tailored to an individual patient’s needs. “RayStation® provides much faster calculation times for the complicated range of optimised treatment plans we produce to suit our patients’ needs. This will allow us to reduce the time from diagnosis to treatment by several days,” explains Dr Bon Mzenda, ARO’s chief physicist. Dr Mzenda adds that receiving a cancer diagnosis can be an anxious time for patients and most want to start their radiation therapy as quickly as possible. An ARO prostate cancer patient recently became the first in Oceania to be treated using the new RayStation® planning

system and Volumetric Modulated Radiation Therapy (VMAT) delivered on an Elekta linear accelerator. “For our clinic, RayStation® offers many advantages. The increased dose computational speed of the system gives us significant gains in managing our planning workload. The system also gives

We have invested heavily, and will continue to invest, to ensure that the techniques, equipment and software we use are at the cutting-edge of clinically-proven oncology treatment. ART & ABOUT

FEAR A good friend of mine teaches lateral thought at a preeminent private school. I never attended a class like this whilst at school. My memories of school are filled with subjects requiring screeds of rote learning, but very little thinking! The kids she teaches are 10 - 11 years old, and last week their challenge was to define fear. Their answers were great and beyond their years. I was blown away by the insightfulness of some of the answers the children gave. What is fear? How would I define it? Probably something along the lines of, fear: a strong emotion you feel when something is scary to you. This emotion causes adrenaline, fight or flight, and sometimes temporary or permanent paralysis. There it is. That’s fear in my world. I’m sure you have your own definition, but one thing I know is that all of us experience fear, and most of the time it’s fear that keeps us from being great. In my world, fear keeps many from one of the greatest things in life: love. My name is Sasha Madarasz, I run Two’s Company, Auckland’s number one introduction agency for single people. Most people who make their way to me share a similar story. One of heartbreak and disappointment followed by a period of fear that paralysed them from taking action with regard to their love life. Yet, eventually something does give. Of course it’s different for everyone, but there is always one defining moment all describe as the point in their life when they were simply ready to move on and start dating again. Of course it’s scary to date. Love is frightening. You don’t own it. You can’t control it. Luckily it’s not about beating love. It’s about joining its team. Love is always taking new members, and once you’re in, it’s quite a ride. Forget about long-term membership. You don’t have a crystal ball, so you’ll never know what your future holds. However, I do know that love will come your way…eventually. You just need to give it the opportunity. I have a dating agency full of wonderful single people who have established lives and are just not getting the opportunity to meet other great single people. They’re waiting to meet you. The process is easy, discreet, and for adults who want adult relationships. If this sounds like something you want and need in your life, give me a call.

Book Reviews 1. VANILLA TABLE Natasha MacAller Take 33 of the best international chefs, add the golden ingredient real vanilla and you will have the ‘recipe’ for a great cookbook. Ex-professional ballerina and chef with a mission, Natasha MacAller, has done that and then some in her beautiful new book, The Vanilla Table. It’s full of ‘want to cook’ recipes, and the clever chefs contributions vary from shaved fennel and Kerikeri orange salad through to slow roasted oxtail pot pies and raspberry meringue martinis, and so many great recipes in between. Vanilla is an all time favourite flavour for sweets and desserts but the twist of adding it to savoury dishes adds a subtleness that foodies will treasure. Definitely a book to sit and drool over, experiment with and then surprise and impress your friends and family with pure deliciousness. I have read and reread my copy of the book and the tin roof gooey scooter pies are a revelation, truly rich and rewarding.

2. PETER MCLEAVEY: LIFE AND TIMES OF A NEW ZEALAND ART DEALER Jill Trevelyan There is a certain atmosphere at art gallery exhibition openings – the chance of discovering a new artist, the admiration of the talent of an established painter and the trick of negotiating the purchase of a piece of work from the art dealer if a work speaks to you – the famous ‘red spot’ moment. Jill Trevelyan scopes out the life and times of one of New Zealands foremost dealers in contemporary art and the story behind the man who has represented so many of the country’s best for nearly five decades. Peter McLeavey opened his gallery in Cuba Street, Wellington in 1968, and in doing so he changed the way artists and their works were presented to the public. Jill Trevelyan was author of the award winning book on Rita Angus and she will be in the running for another with this entrancing biography of Peter McLeavey.

3. PROMOTING PROSPERITY: THE ART OF EARLY NEW ZEALAND ADVERTISING Published by Craig Potton This very welcome new book is a huge sumptuous feast for the eye, the heart and the brain. Packed with fabulous Arcadia Bookshop 26 Osborne Street, Newmarket (09) 522 5211 www.arcadiabookshop.co.nz

illustrations from the archives of the advertising industry in New Zealand it celebrates how New Zealanders were sold their dreams and aspirations of the good life that was to be had in the fast developing country. The advertising industry was in its infancy and electronic or digital communications a thing of the future... the medium WAS the message and the message was buy, buy, buy. Combined with 11 essays from experts in their fields of art, advertising, history and commerce, Promoting Prosperity is so much more than a pretty coffee table book – it encapsulates absolute Kiwiness. If you are looking for a very special corporate gift or a well researched tome on modern social history then Promoting Prosperity comes up trumps on all fronts.

4. LEIGHTON SMITH BEYOND THE MICROPHONE Leighton Smith Long time listener, first time caller is a famous talkback opening sentence often heard as the caller introduces themselves to Leighton Smith. NewstalkZB and Leighton Smith go together like gin and tonic or strawberries and cream. He has been top of the ratings for longer than any other programme presenter in his weekday morning slot on radio history in New Zealand. With the big public presence comes the quite private man, and Leighton Smith Beyond the Microphone reveals for the first time, what makes him tick, what makes his hackles rise and where, when and with whom does he take time out from his public life. Adventures, escapades and some hairy moments on air make for good reading. I have listened to Leighton Smith for a long time and and know he has a tremendous following all around the country. The many listeners who line up to agree or disagree on all the topics under the sun that are openly discussed on his programme will all want to read this book. Add it to your Christmas gift list Read more on Leighton Smith on page 81.

VERVE INTERVIEWS

Gina Dellabarca Festival Director and co-founder of Show Me Shorts Featuring 40 of the best short films made in New Zealand and around the world, Show Me Shorts Film Festival runs from 6 – 20 November at the Capitol Cinema on Auckland’s Dominion Road. Other locations include: Waiheke Island, Matakana, Pukekohe, Wellington, Palmerston North, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin, Paraparaumu, Havelock North, Oamaru, Tauranga and Whitianga. This is the eighth annual Show Me Shorts Film Festival so the Verve team thought it time we found out more about it.

Verve: Gina hi, please introduce yourself to our readers. Gina: Hi! I’m Gina. Festival Director for Show Me Shorts Film Festival for the last seven years. Currently having a pretty amazing year. After years of hard work, Show Me Shorts was acknowledged by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a festival worthy of Academy Awards accreditation. That means our Rush Munro’s Best Film winner qualifies to enter the Oscars. The only festival in New Zealand to be granted this status. Earlier this year another of my long-term goals was realised when I received a scholarship from the German Federal Foreign Office to attend the Berlin International Film Festival. My first A-list film festival! This was an amazing experience as well as useful for Show Me Shorts. Here at home this year I was humbled to be a finalist in the Next Woman of the Year Awards. I was also awarded a place on the ART Venture mentoring programme for creative entrepreneurs. The Arts Regional Trust giving me ongoing professional and business development support for a whole year. V: Could you tell us a little of the story behind the Show Me Shorts Festival and what prompted you to start it? G: New Zealanders are among the best in the world at making short films. When we started the festival eight years ago there weren’t many places to see them. We wanted that opportunity and we thought

there were others like us too. The Show Me Shorts team and I are proud to be playing a role in helping connect New Zealanders with the best short films made here in Aotearoa and all over the world. V: What can you tell us about the kinds of films featured this year, and any big differences between this year’s selection and last year’s? G: We had a lot more entries this year. That means more films at the top end of the quality level to choose from. It also made for a greater range of stories. Audience surveys last year told us this variety is one of the things they love most about Show Me Shorts. The ‘Laughing At Ourselves’ section of the programme, for example includes a silly crime fighting caper (Serve and Protect), a beautiful documentary about clothes recycling in India (Unravel), an animation about the only heterosexual flamingo attempting to find love (Flamingo Pride) and a lascivious taxi driver telling a hilarious filthy story (Honk If You’re Horny). V: What are your feelings on the waning opportunities for those in the film industry in Auckland (due to lack of government provided incentives). G: I feel for our colleagues in the industry that are suffering from lack of work. We are all connected, not just in this industry but in this country. We’re only a small place, but we have a much bigger international film footprint than you would

expect. I’m proud to help showcase the work of so many of our wonderful filmmakers in Show Me Shorts for New Zealanders. V: Where can Verve readers see the Show Me Shorts Festival? G: Come to the beautifully renovated historic Capitol Cinema on Dominion Road. The cinema serves ice-cream and wine, and has recently been upgraded with the latest digital projection technology. There are also screenings in Matakana, Pukekohe and on Waiheke Island if you prefer. V: How strong is international interest? G: This year our number of international entries doubled. Thanks in part to our gaining Academy Awards accreditation – giving Show Me Shorts strong international credibility. The result is a truly outstanding selection of international short films in our programme. We have A-list talent like Michael Richards (Seinfeld’s Kramer) in Walk the Light, and the voices of Cate Blanchett and David Wenham in the award winning animation A Cautionary Tail, about a little girl born with a tail that expresses her emotions. V: Tell us why movie lovers should visit the 2013 Show Me Shorts Festival? G: This is the place to see world class short films. It’s also a great entertaining night out. Bring a date, or your whole family. There’s something for everyone.

NZ On Screen: Orphans & Kingdoms, a film by Paolo Rotondo and Fraser Brown Words: Angus Brown

For many people, the New Zealand film business is associated with big budget epics like The Lord of the Rings series and The Chronicles of Narnia. Whilst those productions have undoubtedly made an enormous contribution to the industry, the majority of films in this country are made on an extremely tight budget. They’re really only made possible because of the passion of the production team and the cast and crew, not to mention the tremendous support invariably required of friends, family and other investors. To paraphrase Salmonella Dub, “they do it for the love of it”. One such project currently nearing completion is Orphans & Kingdoms, an original New Zealand feature film shot on location at Waiheke Island. O & K has been written and directed by Paolo Rotondo and produced by Fraser Brown. This team previously collaborated on the award winning short film Dead Letters. Paolo’s other work includes the powerful plays Strange Resting Places and Little Che and the short film, The Freezer. O & K is an edgy, drama-suspense, taking place over one highly charged night in

a stunning cliff top house overlooking Onetangi beach. Starring Colin Moy (In My Father’s Den) and four talented teens, it’s a touching story of loss, pain and redemption and one which will hopefully catapult its stars and production team to new heights. The team received a tremendous shot in the arm from the New Zealand Film Commission by being granted $250,000 from its escalator fund (the hit film Fantail was one of last years recipients). This was a resounding endorsement as O & K was the only project out of over 70 submissions to be awarded that funding this year. Marvellous though that is, to put it in context, that’s about the same amount that is spent on a single shot of The Hobbit. Other invaluable support has come from the production company Flying Fish, equity investors Random Films and a highly successful ‘pledgeme’ campaign, which generated $30,000 from a great number of supporters. The film will be released in early 2014, with the Auckland premiere being held at the Civic. For tickets to the premiere and to offer your support check out: www.orphansandkingdoms.com

Cambodia A Land of Temples and Tragedy Words: Julien Erwin

Rice steeps in fields of profound resignation. The humid air is saturated with tears. Shuttles skim across looms like miniature missiles as dreams are delicately woven into exquisite silk. The land is flat and lush. Spindly palm trees are the only markers between earth and sky, and silence weighs heavily under an obscure sun. This is rural Cambodia. During its zenith in the 12th and 13th centuries, the once magnificent Khmer Empire rivalled the Greek Empire in size and predominance. It is a sickly shadow of its former self. It was preyed upon and torn apart by its avaricious neighbours Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, controlled by the French, dragged into the infamous war in Vietnam and to add insult to injury, bludgeoned and gutted by the psychopathic Khmer Rouge’s mass genocide from which it is still struggling to recover. But despite the horrific turmoil and humiliation, Cambodia appears to be convalescing and the capital, Phnom Penh shows signs of vigorous construction on the back of unprecedented double digit economic growth. The countryside is verdant and beautiful, Angkor Wat is mystifying and grandiose and the people are cheerful and welcoming if not resilient.

Perhaps it is Cambodia’s hand woven silk industry that best epitomises the robustness and irrepressible courage of its poorest inhabitants. From rural villages that wear their poverty like a heavy cloak come the finest skeins of handmade ‘golden silk’ in the world. Although sericulture is similar worldwide and the flightless moth ‘Bombyx Mori’ ubiquitous, there are regional differences. In China the silk is of a whiter hue, whereas in Cambodia the coveted and unique silk is golden in colour. Silkworms that have adapted to the local, tropical climate produce this ‘Golden silk’. Raw silk is the layer of ‘floss’ that lies beneath the outer thread that is referred to as fine silk. Sericulture and yarn production is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage and social traditions of Cambodia. Coupled with a strong skills base the silk industry is fast emerging as one of the country’s major export earners and provider of employment to women and households in rural areas. In the north west of Cambodia around Siem Reap, where the vast majority of silk production occurs, the entire process of cultivating mulberry trees, breeding silkworms, spinning silk threads, making organic dyes from bark and flowers, building looms and shuttles, stringing warps and finally weaving the fabric is often all done under one roof – literally! It is highly labour intensive and time

consuming but the resulting textures, colours and designs are quite breathtaking. Equipment is handmade from natural and discarded resources close to hand, children are given tasks relating to various stages of rearing the worms, spinning and dying the cloth and while the women weave their incredible fabric, the men can be seen making or repairing equipment or frying dead silkworms – a highly nutritious snack for supper. Nothing goes to waste here! Historically in some countries the wearing of silk was reserved strictly for emperors and rulers, nobility and the like. Today this treasured fabric still remains beyond the reach of most people but is nonetheless much coveted. This is where the bitter irony lies. From these poverty stricken and humble villages, from a sightless, flightless moth, from hard, household labour using the most basic of tools come the finest silk garments money can buy. Fashionable boutiques stock gorgeous clothes that grace the backs of the rich and famous and many a celebrity can be spotted wearing an exclusive scarf made from Cambodian golden silk. Surely this delicate and splendid cloth bears testament to a country and its people that have been dragged to hell and back again and lived to weave another day.

FAST FACTS Mating of butterflies takes around 12 hours. After six hours the female lays up to 300 eggs. Then it dies. When a silkworm starts to weave its cocoon it weighs 10,000 times more that it did when it hatched. A single cocoon can provide a thread that measures anywhere form 0.5 to 1.5 km. It takes 10kg of cocoons to make 1kg of thread.

A Visit to the Middle East’s Most Opulent Spa Words: Deborah Telford

Planning a trip to Europe is all very well but taking a long-haul flight there without a decent break is an exhausting way to start your holiday. If you stopover in Dubai, a visit to the Middle East’s most opulent spa will certainly ease the pain, writes Deborah Telford. On the 35 minute drive to my spa appointment at the five-star Jumeirah Jabeel Saray hotel on Dubai’s man-made, palm-tree island, which is visible from space, the morning heat is already creeping past 35 degrees. A thick desert haze veils clusters of skyscrapers, from predictable lego-like boxes to mosque-inspired monoliths and contorted phallic shapes. Welcome to Planet Dubai. The 405 room, six floor Jumeirah Jabeel Saray was designed as a nod to the grandeur of the Ottoman Empire. It has its own beach, eight restaurants, four night clubs, a foyer where Mission Impossible IV was filmed and, most importantly for my day-long stopover, the Middle East’s most opulent spa. The 42 room Talise Ottoman Spa is halfway down the 200 metre Avenue of Indulgence which dissects the hotel’s ground floor. Within the spa’s maze-like 8000 square metres is everything to soothe and invigorate your senses from floatation pools, hydrotherapy and snow rooms to couples areas and even an adventure shower.

I’m having a strictly traditional treatment in the women-only spa, one of the spa’s three Turkish bath houses, or hammams after which my 50 minute, NZ$ 115 treatment is named. First it’s 10 minutes in a steam room to relax my muscles, then I’m told to don a dubious disposable black bikini, jandals and, thank Allah, a robe, before my therapist Karesha takes me to the hammam. A room the size of a banquet hall with a shimmering turquoise relaxation pool, baroque oil paintings, plush drapes and daybeds brimming with bolsters leads to the main part of the bath house. Its centrepiece is an octagonal, black and white marble slab that sits beneath a huge domed ceiling decorated with a mesmerising kaleidoscope of Moroccan tiles laid out in symmetrical Zelij patterns. Four people can lie on the heated marble and gaze up to the gods whilst having treatments. Today I share the slab with just one other flaked-out female whose form is difficult to distinguish beneath a mountain of soap suds. Karesha douses me with warm water then uses a rough cotton mitt, called a kesemitt, that is softer than, but as effective as a loofah, to scrub me vigorously from nose to toe. She then soaks a long muslin cloth, shaped like a pillow slip, in olive oil, soap and water before flicking it back and forth to fill it with air until it looks like an inflated wind sock.

When she wrings the cloth out, it oozes dollops of foam onto my back, rendering me a motionless Michelin woman before I am massaged all over. The only unpleasant part of the procedure is when I am led aside for a ritual rinsing which involves being swamped with buckets of warm water. Squirming like a recalcitrant toddler with my fingers in my ears, I resist the urge to squeal. Once dried off, I’m swathed in a fluffy white robe and led to a daybed in a darkened alcove and served nuts, fresh dates, chilled water and a Turkish drink called Aryan. The concoction of yogurt, water and salt sounds disgusting but is surprisingly refreshing and helps to replenish lost fluids. It is tempting to languish here all afternoon before my flight, but the beach in front of the hotel beckons from beyond the windows of the spa. Shedding the black bikini and slipping into a more forgiving one-piece, I brave the 48 degree heat, tip toe across the scorching white sand and slide into the Arabian Sea. BUSINESS & SOCIETY

CityTimetv: A Tourist Guide for the 21st Century Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

In this digital and internet age, it’s easy to assume all the good online ideas have been taken, the market cornered by the likes of Google and Facebook. However, a young Auckland-based entrepreneurial media company looks set to carve out their very own cyberspace slot with CityTimetv (www.citytime.tv), which founder Gary Napier describes as somewhere between Trip Advisor and YouTube. “For us, the brave new world is internet video and television convergence,” says Napier. “We thought it would be great to take advantage of new internet streaming devices such as Apple TV and the launch of 4G and UFB (Ultra Fast Broadband) services to design a video city guide for Auckland. When you get to Auckland it is very difficult to find out what’s happening. There’s nothing to tell a business visitor or tourist what to do unless they go and grab a handful of leaflets from the tourist information office.” Originally from London, Napier brings with him a wealth of experience having helmed a host of UK media companies as well establishing the English-speaking 24-hour news channel Al Jazeera. Napier, who launched CityTimetv with three Kiwi business partners, is highly impressed with the talent here. “One of the many great things about New Zealand is it’s full of outstanding technical innovation,” he says. “The software behind our system is incredible and it is a totally Kiwidriven platform.” Napier goes on to explain that CityTimetv enables viewers to preview the very best activities and events Auckland has to offer. This is a video “on demand” viewing platform that allows the viewer to select the video they want to watch on the device of their choice (Desk Top, iPad, iPhone or TV)”. He is at pains to stress that this is an information service not a list of 30 second commercials and that videos on the channel can run to several minutes. One of the advantages he points out is

Originally from London, Napier brings with him a wealth of experience having helmed a host of UK media companies as well establishing the English-speaking 24hour news channel Al Jazeera. their service,“enables companies who could never afford to run a television advertising campaign now reach a worldwide internet television audience” “Everyone that has been on the site loves it,” adds Napier. “I’ve been in television for a long time, and this is the convergence of television and the internet and it’s great fun. We’ve tried to cover the broadest range of categories from the performing arts to restaurants, museums, live music and clubs. It takes away all the hassle. You don’t have to read anything, you just watch. We want people to have a great experience, to find what they need without having to search a hundred websites.” I ask Napier how he sees this technology changing our lives. “In the past we have always sent friends and relatives from overseas to the Tourist Information site and given them our out of date guide books. Now we sit them down on the sofa in front of the television and they watch Citytimetv videos on our Internet

connected television selecting what they want to watch from our iPad or their iPhone. The video might be of a vineyard they had not heard about or a preview of the latest show to hit town. And if they like what they see then they can book tickets or make reservations there and then from their iPad/iPhone. And of course the amazing thing is you don’t have to be sitting in Auckland to do this. You can be in London or New York, indeed anywhere in the world. It never ceases to amaze me when I look at the stats to see our audience is from every corner of the globe!” Auckland aside, CityTimetv spans 17 other cities from Melbourne to London, New York to L.A. I ask Napier what his ultimate goal is for the company. “To be the world’s leading video city guide in every city in the world,” he smiles, “and watched by billions!” That goal certainly isn’t a humble one, but with such a fine product, it’s one that is entirely realistic.

On Air Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces

“I have this terrible fear,” says Leighton Smith of his autobiography, Beyond the Microphone, “that it will sit on the shelves and not be bought.” The talk show host makes for a fascinating lunch companion and love him or loathe him, he sure has some stories to tell. In a career spanning nearly three decades this polarising personality has battled some of the brightest minds, made broadcasting history and beaten cancer. He probably won’t have to worry too much about his tome gathering dust.

“I used to be quite aggressive and I still can be,” he says, as he slices through his steak. “People have told me I’ve mellowed and if I have, it certainly wasn’t deliberate.” He still doesn’t tolerate “idiots” and appreciates those “who at least try to understand.” Combating Leighton Smith live on air is a daunting task. He says his listeners have changed. They’ve become more informed thanks to the internet and it has made it harder for him to stay ahead of the game. When he was told Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley had wed, Smith thought it so absurd, was so sure the caller had erred, that he offered his resignation if proven correct. The following day Smith quit as a “matter of honour.” The resignation was not accepted. I ask if politicians have also changed over his career.

would be a whole different story: “It would take more than a day to re-arrange the welfare system.” He’d like to see national service re-introduced.

“They’ve adapted like the rest of us,” he says. “They reflect the times. Though, we’ve all become more casual in the way we speak to and about them.” He’s been approached a couple of times about going into politics, but it’s not where his ambition lies. Smith has far too much fun on air.

“You’d have to ask them that, but I think so. You can’t have a false façade for as long as I’ve been doing it. You have to be honest.”

Smith labels himself a conservative libertarian. He laments that being right wing is now highly unfashionable but believes in cycles and hopes such views will once again be in vogue. Even more unfashionable is Leighton Smith’s denial of manmade global warming. If he were Prime Minister for a day, he’d eliminate the Emissions Trading Scheme and dismantle the position of the P.M.’s chief scientific advisor. If he was dictator, it

I ask Smith if cares what people think of him and a resounding “no” escapes his lips. He immediately snatches it back. What he does care about are the misconceptions, when people don’t attempt to understand his views. Politics aside, Smith has been “savaged” for his belief in God. “There is no-one more intolerant than a hard-core atheist,” he says. “I’m comfortable with it, so why can’t they be? I’m not ramming it down their throats.” Is the broadcasting Leighton Smith the same man your friends and family witness?

He wed his long-term producer, Carolyn, last year. It was his fourth marriage. It was she who was approached with the suggestion of an autobiography. Smith was reluctant. He wrote the entire book in longhand over a 20 month period. “I didn’t want to do it, but once I got started, it came in waves,” he says. “It was bloody painful.” Were there tears? “It certainly caused a lot more personal revision than I thought it would. There’s stuff in there that I’ve never

talked about. There are no untruths or misrepresentations.” One of Smith’s fondest memories was discovering his favourite author, Daniel Silva, had written him into a book. It was a thank you for championing the writer on the radio. “It was only a line or two,” says Smith, “but it was a total surprise.” Margaret Thatcher, he tells me, was extremely polite and Prince Phillip, “stiff.” Smith crossed swords with Prince Charles over Diana on their first Kiwi visit (“you’ll have to read the book for details”) and the Queen impressed upon him that she wasn’t too keen on weekend visits from the grandkids. Smith still gets a rush from interviews, but nothing fazes him. There’s not one current potential interviewee that excites him. If Smith could go back in time, he’d choose to quiz Thomas Jefferson. And as for the future? “My contract expires in a year and that’s me done,” he reveals. “I’ll enjoy spending more time in Italy.” No doubt he’ll also further his wine knowledge. Smith’s 40 acre vineyard, Clevedon Hills Estate, has garnered rave reviews in the Michael Cooper annual. “It took me a while to get it right,” he says. “But I’m now making some very good wine.” His only remaining goal is to enjoy himself. I ask if he’s excited about retirement. He is. “Though, I know I’ll miss what I do.”

Inspirational Mature Women Jenny Carlyon Writer/Historian Jenny and I meet for coffee in Ponsonby. She tells me that this area, or more specifically Freemans Bay, used to be a slum. It turned around in the 70s as writers, artists and other creative types moved in, capitalising on the cheap real estate. A fluent French speaker, Jenny completed her BA in history at The Université de Lyon and later, her PhD at Auckland in 2000, somehow finding time to raise four children and work as a teacher and historian in between. Fortunately, her husband and children have always been tremendously supportive of her work.

Jo Brosnahan QSO Leadership and Change Specialist “The highest type of ruler is one of whose existence the people are barely aware…...When his task is accomplished and things have been completed, all the people say, ‘We ourselves have achieved it!’” Lao Tzu. She’ll tell me off for saying this, but Jo Brosnahan is the kind of leader the great Chinese sage was referring to. Moreover, she’s been doing it for some time now, across many different spheres of New Zealand life as well as on an international level. During her Harkness Fellowship year at Duke University in 1995-1996, she had the good fortune of learning from a diverse range of American leaders. The experience introduced her to the concept of ‘Servant Leadership’, a philosophy popularised in the 1970s by Robert Greenleaf but in fact, dating back to Lao Tzu and Jesus Christ, amongst many others. Servant Leadership effectively turns the old ‘traditional leadership model’ (accumulation and exercise of power by those at the top) on its head and emphasises instead, two ostensibly paradoxical traits: humility and a strong sense of purpose. The natural extension of these foci are a sharing of power, putting others before oneself and lifting them up by helping them to develop their own potential. What a splendid idea! Why aren’t more of our leaders following this approach one wonders? Jo is one leader who has followed it and she’s done so at a very high level and in a range of organisational contexts: as CEO of the Northland and Auckland Regional Councils, in her work for the New Zealand Railways and various port authorities, and more recently, as the Chair of Leadership New Zealand (to name only a few). Being a lone female voice in a male dominated world has not been smooth sailing, but Jo has had wonderful support along the way from her husband Chris, as well as various New Zealand business-people including Ewen McQueen and Jim Carney. She is increasingly committed to doing the same for others by fostering a sense of community in the organisations in which she’s involved and by collaborating with younger women regarding how to develop their own careers, to know themselves deeply and to live balanced lives – qualities which, along with resilience, are a much needed inoculation against the ego-centricity and self-promotion all too often found in the traditional leadership approach.

As an independent historian, Jenny is always being exposed to fascinating projects, occasionally choosing them herself, as she and co-author Diana Morrow did for Urban Village: A History of Ponsonby, Freemans Bay and St Mary’s Bay, and A Fine Prospect: A History of Remuera, Meadowbank and St Johns (both published by Random House). For other projects, she is approached by publishers, other writers or large corporations to work on a specific subject or period of time. This was the case for some of the work she has done as an expert witness and as a researcher for Sandra Coney’s Standing in the Sunshine (a history of the New Zealand women’s suffrage movement). Jenny and Diana’s third book, this time with Auckland University Press, is a history of New Zealand since 1945 and is due out in November. With each book, this dynamic duo becomes more streamlined in the process and they have learned to complement each other well. For Jenny, the most rewarding aspects of being an independent writer are immersing herself in the research and hearing the stories of notable figures such as Tigi Ness (father of Che Fu) and All Black winger, Bryan Williams. Studying two suburbs in this manner has also changed her perspective of Auckland – she sees it now across time, “noticing remnants of how it used to be” in the beautiful old homes of Remuera and the descendants of the families who have lived there. It’s a tough process – each book takes about two and a half years to complete – but her collaboration with Diana is “fantastic” and she feels very lucky to have such an amazing writing partner. Because of the vast amounts of information they gather, the biggest challenge is deciding what to include and what to omit and there are many fascinating stories that don’t ultimately make the cut. When it comes to words of wisdom for aspiring young historians and writers, Jenny’s advice is, “to just give it a go, and don’t ever be afraid to ask for help.” She regularly consults other historians and experts and finds people unfailingly supportive and eager to help.

“Sisters are doin’ it for themselves” – This month Verve celebrates four inspiring Auckland women who have carved out extraordinary careers for themselves in very different fields and who are living proof that the Eurythmics got it right! Words: Angus Brown

Mande White Yoga Instructor Mande, or Mandoza (as she’s sometimes known in yogic circles), welcomes me into her Ponsonby studio, City Yoga, with a wide smile. As we settle onto our bolsters, I have a chance to admire her. She looks great – fit, strong and beautiful. I decide there must be something to this yoga business after all. She tells me that my ‘half lotus’ “is actually pretty good, for a bloke”. Merely a side effect I say, of many years of being over-stretched and under-paid.

Michal McKay The Connoisseur Michal McKay’s refined yet simple style and bearing has many of the hallmarks of her beloved Coco Chanel. Although I quickly learn that this elegant exterior belies a human dynamo with a serious work ethic, who has led a life glamorous and exciting enough to make most of us mere mortals green with envy. Her mother, Paddy Walker, was a mover and shaker in the New Zealand fashion industry long before it was even fashionable and Bernie Leser (ultimately the President of Condé Nast Publications in New York) – who would become a mentor as her career took shape – was a family friend. Interestingly though, Michal’s first passion was in medicine and she had set her sights on becoming a doctor. Father quickly put the kibosh on that idea though when he heard she was planning to move to Dunedin to join the ranks of those rambunctious scarfies. Bacteriology being a poor substitute for a gregarious young thing, after a year she turned instead to her second love, journalism, becoming the fashion and beauty editor of New Zealand Vogue as a 21-year-old neophyte. Since then, she has worked in nearly every fashion capital in the world, including New York, Paris, London, Sydney and as far afield as Istanbul. I’d need considerably more space to canvas her entire career; but the highlights include setting up and editing Vogue magazine in Singapore, being amongst the top brass at Estée Lauder, Aramis and Country Road and being the Group Editorial Director for the FPC Courier Newspaper Group in Sydney. More recently, she has focused her energies on publishing a beautiful coffee table book – Wanaka: Earth to heaven at Whare Ka, a tantalising combination of exotic food, scenery and outdoor activities as well as developing her consulting business Maiki Ltd. The business specialises in branding, writing and image creation and clearly draws on her wealth of experience. We can’t wait to see what she’ll do next.

With 30 years of practice and teaching under her belt, Mande is one of New Zealand’s foremost yoga instructors and her advice is frequently sought for all manner of health related issues. She was trained in the Iyengar tradition under Mr Iyengar himself and the lads who were the young guns at the time, Shandor Remete (so renowned he generally just goes by his first name), and Manos Manouso, the San Francisco-based guru whose Bay Area students are probably only now returning to earth after last month’s success. A very hard worker, she teaches 21 classes every week, including a monster class of 200 stretchy souls at Les Mills. Being a former aerobics star, Mande’s right at home in the limelight. Despite this, she tells me that her yoga journey has actually been a process of gradually becoming less egocentric and indeed, more humble. I didn’t know her in the early days, but she’s lovely now so she must be doing something right. Her teaching is all about helping her students, whom she loves, to find the inner strength to handle any emotional or physical hurdle. The scores of grateful Christmas cards she gets every year are a testament to her success in that endeavor. The Iyengar training honed her knowledge of anatomy and physiology and the centrality of structural alignment. However, she has come to realise that Iyengar (the style, not the man) can be a little bit ‘stop-start’. Therefore, she has incorporated a degree of flexibility and fluidity to her classes that her students appreciate. She’s known many inspirational teachers, but at 95 and still doing backbends, headstands and generally twisting himself into a pretzel, B.K.S Iyengar still takes the cake. Mande’s advice to younger women is to go within to find the inner strength to deal with adversity. If you need a little help to do this, pop in to Mackelvie St, Mandoza will be delighted to see you.

VERVE INTERVIEWS

Deborah Lee Marlow Means Business World-renowned, award-winning entrepreneur Deborah Lee Marlow knows what it’s like to have zilch and live very close to the earth. Poverty and abuse were endemic in her years as a child and as a young solo-mum. Poverty both inspired her to change her life but also created some difficult moments as poverty does.

As the eldest child growing up in the remote wilderness of America’s Pacific Northwest, at 12 years of age Deborah would often be left alone for the one to two days it took her parents to get supplies. She was armed with a 30-30 rifle to protect her siblings from wild animals and roaming ‘gold’ robbers. Her childhood, she tells me, was a transient one with the family moving to different logging or gold mining camps or living on Indian reservations, following work. Over the years her dad became increasingly abusive. She’d grab her books and hide in the woods to escape from her father’s violence. Dickens, Miller, Dostoyevsky, Nietzsche, Wharton, Plath, and Plato opened up windows of hope and inspiration that there was a better world out there. Finding that world became her driving passion. Turning 16, she escaped into marriage to a Native American which ended when

she turned 19. Deborah was left her alone with a two-week old baby in her arms. “He was very old school,” she says. “I told him I wanted to be an anthropologist and he told me not to use such big words in his house, and ‘no wife of mine will work outside the home!’” But now alone, she had no education, no skills, no money, couldn’t (wouldn’t) go back to living in the woods. She had read that there was another life out there, a better life with not only running water and electricity but HOT running water. But breaking the poverty cycle is hard and it took a few more years of making mistakes before she could create a way out. “By this time I was a solo Mum with three kids, sleeping in a car, putting water in their milk to make a full glass, searching for food in the back of supermarkets. My last child I gave birth to in a trailer with no electricity and no running water. I was still repeating a pattern of failure. I tried to break the pattern of poverty. When

I finally got a job I hitchhiked to work each morning dressed in a business suit, sometimes the driver would pull a gun (good ‘ole American right to bear arms) and I’d have to do some fast-talking to stay unharmed. I always looked to see if the inside doorknob was removed before I got into car and wore flats so I could run if I needed to jump. But no matter what happened, I kept working, and eventually the world was my oyster!“

It’s not the only time Deborah’s stared down a barrel. Having acquired a cinema in Prague, local gangsters (hired by the previous owners who wanted the now renovated cinema back) came armed into the cinema office, told her to give up the property and leave their country. Instead, she hired two Uzbekistani bodyguards, grabbed some overnight supplies, brought her Rhodesian ridgeback dog to her office, loaded her pistol, and slept on the floor of her store for 18 nights protecting her property. It was one of the few business battles she would eventually lose as one day she received a phone call from her children in Germany that an anonymous caller said she’d been shot and killed. Deborah took that as a clear warning and abandoned her investments in Czech at a full loss. As you evolved into the corporate world would you say that you developed a ruthless streak? “No, I wouldn’t say ruthless, but I am exacting and don’t appreciate ‘excuses’. If I’d allowed myself ‘excuses’ when I was climbing up from the bottom, I’d still be there. My challenging life taught me a couple of things: (1) to be 100% accountable for my actions and for the results of my actions…in other words there is never anyone else to ‘blame’. (2) If you really believe in your dream go for it, no matter how many times you are knocked down, get back up on the saddle and get back to work. (3) Be 100% honest, ask questions, keep learning and hold your children close, it’s not easy for them either if you are putting in 80-hour work weeks to ensure wolves never come howling at the door again.” “Ruthlessness has connotations of meanness and cruelty, but they’re not in my nature. Unfortunately, strong, direct, focused management from a woman at the executive level is often interpreted as ‘ruthless’ but from a man it’s considered clear and smart…funny that, eh?” Over the last three decades, Deborah developed keen corporate acumen and has founded, bought and sold empires across the globe. Award Software International Inc. grew into the third largest systems software house internationally. Over 300 million PCs use her software today. In Ireland, where she was known as the ‘Business Whisperer’, she was CEO of a division of Ireland’s first online bank and opened a successful chain of Mexican diners. She has fought forest fires, planted over a million fir trees and rubbed shoulders with royalty, the mafia, Bill Gates and the Dalai Lama. She counted the late Mo Mowlem as a dear friend and once lived next door to the legendary scribe, Ken Kesey. During her business building years she averaged over

Over the last three decades, Deborah developed keen corporate acumen and has founded, bought and sold empires across the globe. Award Software International Inc. grew into the third largest systems software house internationally. Over 300 million PCs use her software today. 200,000 air miles a year. She has suffered bankruptcy, which was as big a lesson, she says, as any success! Presumably you no longer have to work, so why do you still do it? “For me work is life, work isn’t separate from life but rather it represents love of life. It’s like some kind of delicious foreplay to hear someone describe a good business idea, to see that passion glow in an entrepreneur and to discover a business that could just maybe change the world? It doesn’t happen often, but when it does… it’s a big WOW. Work nourishes me. Well that, my family and gardening.” The morning of our interview, the list of America’s leading CEOs was released. All white males. “It’s very, very hard for a woman to reach the top,” says Deborah. “Hard businessmen are considered tough and hard women are called ball breakers. She’s a big fan of the can-do Kiwi attitude, the “cute humour and quirkiness”. Though, she believes the

She lives to work, a true product of the American Dream, believing anything possible with hard work and determination. Failure is simply a stepping stone to success.

85

“You see a lot of entrepreneurs fail again and again,” she says. “But most of them really are something else. It takes courage and self-confidence to become a true entrepreneur. It can easily cost them a marriage or home as they try and fail until they succeed. That’s why America’s so great – this failure before success is part of the ‘American Dream’ ethos. When I lost all my money in Europe I had no place to go but back to America to start again. It’s the only place in the world where there’s no shame in failing as long as you get back up on the saddle and ride again, smarter…that is.” She’s now a sought-after motivational speaker and advises businesses and entrepreneurs internationally. Deborah is a Rotarian, New Zealand’s Chair of the Women Presidents Organisation, member of Global Women and has settled on the Kapiti Coast with her Irish partner, Pat. It is an idyllic setting and they’ve laid down roots for good in an Art Deco abode they have christened their ‘Forever Home’. However Deborah still continues with the day job.

Deborah does not appear to be the kind of person who harbours regret, but she admits there are a few, which, true to form, she spins into something positive. They concern the lives of her children, more so than her own. “I don’t know, but I think it would have been better for my kids if I had had one stable place that they could have called home, whether it had been France, Germany or California,” she says. “They didn’t have that. They had the world as their home. So that’s it, that’s my little life and that’s all part of it, I guess. There are some other stories, but we’ll save those for another day.” Deborah can be reached at deborah@deborahleemarlow.com Or look here in next month’s Verve for her monthly Business Q & A column.

MATTERS OF INTEREST: FORGING AHEAD WITH AUCKLAND COUNCIL’S SECOND TERM Here we are at the start of the second term of the Auckland Council. I want to congratulate Auckland’s new and returning councillors and local board members. I look forward to working with you all. One of my first tasks is setting out my priorities for the next annual budget. I’ve talked to thousands of Aucklanders over the past few months. People want to be assured we’re doing everything to keep rates low while keeping a close eye on debt and making prudent, strategic investment in infrastructure which has been neglected and underfunded for too long. As Aucklanders, we need to have a discussion about funding – what funding mechanisms are acceptable to us for the infrastructure shortfall, how we could utilise public private partnerships, and possible sponsorship agreements for day-today operations, like swimming pools. I think the time is also ripe for Auckland to lead a national debate about the way we fund local government. If it’s possible to do that in fairer and more equitable ways than rates, let’s explore them. Fairness is critical to the new Auckland, and I know some of the changes we have faced haven’t seemed fair to some communities, like berm mowing and rates. Auckland City was the only former council which mowed berms. We faced the decision between saving $3 million to cease mowing, bringing the area into line with the rest of Auckland or spending an additional $12-$15 million to mow all Auckland berms. We needed to consider what was fair practice and what was the fairest and most prudent use of our finances. Moving to a region-wide rating system was a challenge, which faced the first Mayor and council of all Auckland, irrespective of the people in the hot seats. Properties of equal value rated on an equal footing is the principle, but I acknowledge it hasn’t felt equitable for many people in the former Auckland City in the transition from an annual-value based rating system to a capital value based rating system. Uneven impact of the change is why we asked the government to enable us to have a three-year transition period. The first term of Auckland Council was historic – never has there been so much debate about our future direction and progress made toward it. The second term will be no less significant as we continue to make real progress towards creating the world’s most liveable city.

Len Brown Mayor of Auckland

DELIVERING A LIVEABLE INNER CITY FOR AUCKLAND’S GROWING POPULATION The recent Census revealed around 70,000 people live in Auckland Central, and that our local community has grown by 12,000 people since 2006. This is reflected in our busier streets, the growing number of local businesses, and the expanding number of schools. Auckland Central has had the largest growth out of all electorates across the country, and confirms what we already know – our city is a great place to live, and that more people want to live here. The large growth in Auckland region’s population also means a new electorate needs to be created. We have worked hard since 2008 to develop local infrastructure to meet population growth. The Wynyard Quarter and the Victoria Tunnel are open, but we have more work to do if we want to make Auckland a liveable city for generations to come. This includes starting work on the City Rail Link, implementing the Auckland Housing Accord and ultimately the Unitary Plan, delivering the second harbour crossing and further development of the waterfront space for both business, and the enjoyment of our local community. I also want to ensure there is enough social infrastructure (like schools) to meet the large growth we are seeing, and to ensure we are growing sustainably. I have recently opened new classrooms at Grey Lynn School and Ponsonby Primary School, and there are a number of other local school projects on the go to ensure parents and their children have good access to local schools. We are also making progress in delivering additional homes for Aucklanders with the first special housing areas announced. 6,000 homes will be built across Auckland, a significant step towards our target of consenting 39,000 new homes over three years. If recent history is anything to go by, Auckland’s growth is set to accelerate over coming years. We have taken the first brave, crucial steps in addressing major housing, transport and education infrastructure issues. By working smarter and harder, we can keep up with the growth and deliver a sustainable and liveable city.

NOVEMBER 2013

DEALING WITH AUCKLAND’S TRAFFIC CHALLENGES

MAYOR NEEDS TO NOW SHOW HE’S SERIOUS I’ve told the Mayor I expect him to be bold when it comes to his draft 2014/15 budget. During the election campaign he promised to tighten up on the council’s finances. Let’s now see if he’s serious. His direction setting paper for next year will be released on 17 November.

The feedback I’m getting around the Epsom electorate is that most people are encouraged by the general economic direction of the country. We’ve come through the Global Financial Crisis strongly and, while business still isn’t easy for many, there is good cause for optimism. But most Aucklanders I talk to are keen to see more progress made to boost the supply of new housing, to take the pressure off house prices, and they want to spend less time stuck in traffic. I’ve written previous columns on the government’s action on housing, particularly to free up supply of land. The government has also made improving Auckland transport system a real priority, because it is so important to the economy and to the quality of life for Aucklanders. Making progress on transport – whether it’s better roads or better public transport – costs a lot of money. On behalf of New Zealanders the government will spend $12.2 billion on the Roads of National Significance. The big one in Auckland is the Western Ring Route, including the Waterview tunnel project. John Key has just recently switched on ‘Alice’ the great boring machine which will dig the tunnel. We’ve also invested large sums in improving public transport, by helping Auckland Council with the electrification of the rail system and to purchase new trains. The Prime Minister has also signalled support for the CBD rail loop, provided the business case stacks up. How do we pay for all this? We pay for transport infrastructure through taxes, levies and user charges, and also the government takes on debt. Nobody wants too much debt, however. The National Government has reduced the amount of debt we’ve had to take on as a nation by selling minority stakes in two power companies. The recent sale of 49% of Meridian will raise $1.88 billion and combined with the $1.7 billion in proceeds from the Mighty River Power offer this has freed up $3.58 billion to be allocated to the Future Investment Fund, which will be used to invest in the government’s infrastructure programme. This has meant the government has had to borrow less than it would have otherwise to carry on its bold investment programme in new priority public assets. Under John Key’s leadership, we’ve been able to make significant progress on dealing with Auckland’s traffic challenges while still delivering on the government’s plan to control debt and successfully set a path back to surplus. I’ve made it clear where I expect him to wield the knife. He needs to cut the council’s overheads to help keep rates down, cap staff numbers and salaries, and prioritise capital expenditure projects to better manage debt. Not to mention resolve the berm issue that’s not going away! Len Brown needs to get the fat council salaries under control first and foremost before he puts his hand out for even more money from the poor old suburban ratepayers with his recent promise of introducing a Living Wage at Auckland Council. Our wage bill is growing significantly every year and it’s now at $702m for 10,616 staff. Let’s focus on managing that before even digging an even bigger hole for ratepayers to fill. It’s totally out of whack that the number of Auckland Council staff (including the CCOs) earning more than $100,000 has increased by 20.4% in the past 12 months to 1,510 people at 30 June 2013. Despite these out-of-control numbers, the Mayor and a majority of his centre-left councillors keep pushing management to adopt a Living Wage – a policy that is now estimated to cost the council at least another $3.75m each year. At the same time he needs to prioritise his capital projects. Currently the council is borrowing about $1 billion a year or $3m a day. It’s not sustainable and we haven’t even started to work out how we’re going to fund the likes of the City Rail Link! Three years on and it’s blindingly obvious that the Mayor has failed to take advantage of the one-off economic opportunities the amalgamation presented. It’s time he focused on actually delivering the savings first before making even more promises. Lastly, congratulations to the hard-working seven members of the Orakei Local Board on their recent re-election: Desley Simpson; Mark Thomas; Ken Baguley; Kate Cooke; Kit Parkinson; Troy Churton and Colin Davis. I look forward to working closely with them and am best available on cameron.brewer@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz For more news and views please visit www.cameronbrewer.co.nz

MATTERS OF INTEREST CONT:

THE FIRST TALL SHIP FESTIVAL: AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS AND REMINDER OF AUCKLAND’S MARITIME HERITAGE

Labour weekend will stay in the memory of those estimated 200,000 Aucklanders who came down to the waterfront to see the magnificent tall ship fleet. It was my privilege on behalf of the Mayor to formally welcome the eight ships and their crews at an official powhiri, after the captains and some 600 sailors, some from as far away as Great Britain and the Netherlands, Canada and Australia marched on to Queens Wharf led by the band of the Royal New Zealand Navy. The visit of the tall ships was a reminder to us all of our beginnings in New Zealand – and in Auckland. Auckland is a harbour city. It was the superb advantages of the beautiful Waitemata Harbour that prompted the first Governor of New Zealand – who happened to be a Royal Navy Captain – William Hobson to select this place in 1840 to found the city of Auckland. And just as Auckland is a harbour city – a port city – New Zealand is an island nation – lying at the furthest reaches of the world – dependent on the sea and ships and the maritime trade for our very existence. Not only is the sea our economic life blood – the sea is in our blood – in our DNA. We are a sea people and the great harbour of Waitemata has welcomed so many of our ancestors – from the great voyaging canoe Tainui and the other waka which sailed here bringing the ancestors of the Maori people from tropical Polynesia – to the tall ships of the explorers and immigrant ships from Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the ships stay, thousands of Aucklanders young and old visited Queen, Princes and Hobson wharves to see the ships up close, to marvel at the complex technology of ropes and timber and canvas and iron which brought the ancestors of so many us from half-way round the world. Many people and organisations contributed to the success of the Tall Ships Festival but special thanks must go to John Lister the inspirational festival director, the Spirit of New Zealand Trust which first proposed the idea to the council, and the Voyager Maritime Museum of New Zealand which hosted the event.

WHAT A CONUNDRUM More expense for the landlord. Berms to be mowed! 1 December - Digital television! Insurance premiums! Increased rates! Now that the council are not mowing the berms, it will cost the landlord extra if he is paying for this, or tenants who are mowing the lawns will suddenly have more to mow and they may be wanting some recognition of this by a reduction in rent: some of these berns are large. Digital television: tenants with a UHV Aerial on their rented accommodation will either have to get Freeview or an Igloo set top box or a television with Freeview built in to be able to view any of the channels, alternatively they could subscribe to Sky. The question is who pays, landlord or tenant? Could this be yet another expense for the landlord? Rates have also been increased, in some cases quite substantially. On top of all the above, home insurance has also skyrocketed because of the Christchurch earthquake, and owners need either to obtain the services of a valuer to assess the replacement value of their property (which costs), or risk doing their own calculations to arrive at a replacement value. So a few changes to the bottom line! Landlords may decide to sell their investment property, which in turn would reduce the amount of rentable residential homes, the follow on from this being an INCREASE in rents! WHAT A CONUNDRUM!

GETTING AHEAD IN THE CLOUD Using online apps for fun and business. Do you use Xero for your accounts? Do you use gmail? How about iTunes, Facebook or Dropbox? If the answer is yes to any of these, then you’re already using web applications on a daily basis. You are, in fact, knee deep in cloud computing. Cloud computing is one of those buzzwords that sounds great but which no one really explains when they say it – so let me buck the trend and explain it to you now. It describes a kind of programme that does all of its hard work on a large computer somewhere else on the internet. All you have to do is connect to it, normally through a website or application, to use almost any service that you can imagine: shopping, banking, accounting, email, phone and video calls, television shows, music, photoediting, office tools and more. Even better, you don’t need a very powerful computer of your own to get any of these great services, nor do you (usually) have to install anything: they just work, no matter if you use Windows, a Mac or even Android. They work on phones, on tablets (such as an iPad), they work on laptops or desktops. All you need is an internet connection.

But if you run a business, there’s also another opportunity: to build your own web application and give your customers a digital service that sets you apart from your competition. Think about something routine that your customers have to do on a regular basis, something time-consuming but necessary, and something which fits neatly into what you offer. If you can let them do this over the web, with a minimum of fuss, you might be able to reach a much wider market or greatly increase the loyalty of the customers you have. So keep it in mind the next time you’re using an online app, and you might just come up with a winning business idea. James McGoram is an author, designer and the director of Messiah Studio, a web design company based in Parnell, Auckland. Visit www.messiah.co.nz for your free online business guide.

This revolution in personal computing has been building for several years, and it makes it extremely affordable for businesses and individuals alike to get access to some incredible software.

RUDY’S TIPS ‘N TRICKS We have just launched our new website www.rudys.co.nz which has new laptops tablets and PC’s that you can purchase directly. Also, links to our remote support and general information. RUDY’S TIP FOR SPRING: As the weather gets warmer, so will your computer. If it has been a while since your laptop or PC has had a dust out, now is the time. Overheating is a real issue for your system, and if it seems noisier than it was when new, it probably needs our attention. We can give it a service and clean up, inside and out. All for only $95.00 We have many calls from people who have lost their work when typing a document. A common cause for this is when you go to type a capital “A” and instead of pressing the “Shift” key - the key below “Ctrl” is pressed instead. In

pressing Ctrl and the letter A you are sending a command to your computer to select all text (known as a shortcut key). So when you type any letter you are replacing all your text. As soon as you notice this there are a couple of things you can do. 1. Try using the undo option and continue to use this until your original text reappears. An alternative way to do this is by again using a shortcut key Ctrl + Z (the undo command). Repeat this command until your text reappears. 2. If you are consistently saving your document, try closing your document and don’t save your changes. It will take you back to when you last saved your document. When you reopen your document you will see all your text as at the point of your last save. If neither of these processes works contact us for other options. Do NOT turn your machine off. I recommend that whenever you are typing a document especially a large

document, that you save what you have done every 5 to 10 minutes. This may sound excessive but ask yourself “can I afford to lose 5 or 10 minutes work?” At Rudy’s PC Services we can help you set up the best solution for your needs. Call us about anything regarding your computer and we will be glad to advise you and fulfil your requirements. Ground Control to Major Tom Words: Jamie Christian Desplaces Images: Mars One

NASA’s Curiosity Rover recently discovered the presence of water in the soil of Mars. “This dirt is interesting because it seems to be about the same everywhere you go,” writes Laurie Leshin in the journal, Science. “If you are a human explorer, this really is good news because you can quite easily extract water from almost anywhere.”

NOVEMBER 2013

It will certainly have aroused the interest of Bas Lansdorp, Dutch entrepreneur and founder of Mars One; a project to send volunteer ‘astronauts’ to settle a human colony on the red planet. It is a mission with a rather substantial catch: it’s strictly a one-way trip. With echoes of the Truman Show, the space explorers will be filmed 24 hours a day 365 days a year in what would be the most audacious social experiment in history. “Looking at the images of the Mars surface Sojourner rover in 1997 as a young student made me want to go to Mars myself,” says Lansdorp. “As I explored the idea in the following years with friends and colleagues, each piece of the puzzle seemed to fall into place. When I solved the last piece of the puzzle, I sold part of my shares in my previous company to finance the start-up of Mars One.” Since 2011, it has been a full-time gig. Dreams of reaching Mars are by no means a modern-day phenomenon. As far back as 1880, Percy Grey penned Across the Zodiac whose central character made the trip, and in 1908 Alexander Bogdanov published Red Star in which the planet was portrayed as a socialist utopia. There were countless other stories throughout the 20th century, including ones by esteemed scribes such as C.S. Lewis (Out of the Silent Planet) and Kurt Vonnegut (The Sirens of Titan). Cinemas too were awash with Martian tales like the 1990 smash hit Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead (also loosely based on a short story written by Philip K. Dick). The movie saw humans settle in a similar fashion to that proposed by Mars One. The first round of applications for the mission closed in September with over 200,000 online signatures. Nearly a

quarter were American, with India, China, the UK, Russia and Canada making up the majority of the remaining list. New Zealand produced ten applicants. Come 2015, 40 hopefuls will embark upon an eight-year training programme and from those only four will make the final cut. They leave in 2023. Once there, they will prepare the settlement and further inhabitants will be sent at twoyearly intervals. Physicality aside, the psychological impacts of an endeavour of such isolation are mind-boggling. Should anything go wrong, an SOS could take up to 22 minutes to reach Earth, depending on planetary alignment, and the current quickest rocket ship would then take six months to arrive. Missions through history have been plagued with failure. The first took place in 1960, with the vast majority having been carried out by the USA and the USSR. Japan and the European Space Agency have conducted one each. The success rate has been less than

93

50%. Though, out of eight American attempts to land on the red planet, only one has so far failed. The technological advancements too in the last half-century have been meteoric. Mars is of course the most habitable known planet (for humans at least) after our own. There is a slight atmosphere to offer protection from radiation and gravity is 38% that of Earth’s, a figure scientists believe the human body will adapt to over time. The planet’s rotation is almost identical to ours, with days measuring in just shy of 25 hours. Solar panels, rather than nuclear reactors, will be used to generate power. Using electrolysis, oxygen will be extracted from the water in the soil, which, along with the naturally occurring nitrogen in the atmosphere will be pumped into the habitats as breathable air. In the habitats, farming will also take place. The ultimate aim is for the new human colony to become totally self-sustaining. “The human condition by its very nature is to push through crises,” says Dr Norbert Kraft, former NASA and current Mars One advisor. “History has been made when the impossible is made possible. The question is not whether we will make it to Mars, but whether we will succeed when we get there. The ability to build not only a physical community, but an emotional one, will determine whether we succeed or fail.” It is estimated the project will cost $8 billion, money expected to be recouped through media and television rights. A real-life Truman Show it might well be, but should any of the stars decide that life was after all better on Earth, there will be no cloud-painted studio doors through which they can flee.

Brain fade, brain fog or senior moment – call it what you like, at some stage most adults, especially older adults, experience times when their brain function lets them down. Clinicians Brain Boost with CognizinTM (citicoline), an innovative and scientifically validated health supplement recently launched in New Zealand, is designed to help support mental clarity, focus and healthy brain function. It is a registered medicine in Japan where it was developed. Clinicians says a number of clinical studies show that citicoline supports cellular energy in the brain region responsible for focus, mental clarity and alertness. CognizinTM is a branded form of citicoline, a natural substance found in every cell of the body and especially vital to brain health. This unique preparation is, therefore, suitable for older adults who may benefit from nutritional support for brain health and alertness, as well as students preparing for examinations. “Citicoline is a completely natural nutrient to support brain performance by enhancing the metabolism and healthy brain activity,” comments Clinicians technical consultant and registered pharmacist, Debora-Dale Young. She says citicoline supports the health of mitochondria, the powerhouses within the cells that produce the brain’s energy. “Healthy mitochondrial function results in higher levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s main energy storage molecule, in brain cells.” Cognizin has also been shown to support the activity of nerves helping to optimise activity levels in the brain’s clarity and performance circuits.

Our afternoon session encourages the younger children to learn routines and self-help skills, while being nutured to develop self-esteem. Our morning session provides a high quality programme that encourages the older children to develop their skills through music, drama and creative art activities. Children are encouraged to develop gross motor skills in a fun, safe environment.

LITERACY AND NUMERACY The workbook programme is introduced around the age of four years as a developmentally appropriate tool to develop pre literacy and numeracy skills in a fun, relaxed manner. Emphasis is placed on meeting the needs of each child and developing good self image and skill building. This allows the children individual time with the teacher to assist in building confidence, independence and the development of communication skills (such as asking for assistance and expressing their own ideas and thoughts) and competencies such as scissor and pasting skills. The Literacy and Numeracy Programme is designed to help children in their transition to school. It is introduced in the term before starting school to consolidate the learning which has taken place holistically in the kindergarten over preceding terms. In a fun way it introduces children to the terminology of school and the classroom skills required to listen, follow instructions, follow a set routine to complete a given task and to present their work with pride.

One of our teachers is dedicated to the full-time task of teaching numeracy and literacy skills to the children. Each child is given individual attention, and our results are subsequently excellent.

LittleCooks is Cooking Up a Storm! Established in 2012, LittleCooks was created by Auckland mothers Bex Woolfall and Suzi Tait-Bradly, both passionate about ensuring that every Kiwi kid learns to cook. With over 200 children’s cooking classes and more parties than they can shake a stick at, LittleCooks engages kids by being wacky, playful and creative with food. Nutrition is also a key component of their cooking programme. The emphasis is on clean food where kids learn to make meals from scratch. Whether it be baked beans, tortillas or tomato sauce, we find that by teaching them the clean way, packaged goods are no longer their first choice. Instead, they want to make whatever it is all by themselves. “Developing these habits at a young age sets them up for making healthy food choices in the future,” says the pair.

Right now LittleCooks have a birthday party promotion on, “have your cake and eat it.” If you book a party by 30 December 2013 (for 2013/2014) LittleCooks will throw in a birthday cake for FREE*.

PEACE OF MIND FROM PET INSURANCE When it comes to our own pets, veterinarians are magnets for the sickly and the accident prone! Which is why, as a veterinarian, I have invested in pet insurance. My one year old dog has a carefree attitude, determined to find inappropriate items to chew, and full of confidence when meeting unfriendly dogs. My overly cautious fur-parenting has possibly accentuated her risk taking behaviour. Given her over-exuberant fearless approach to life I have insurance to guard against the awful prospect of being faced with expensive treatment I can’t afford. Every patient arriving at the Animal Emergency Centre is accompanied by an owner who is anxious about their sick or injured pet. Many owners also feel concerned about the looming potential for expensive treatment. The boundaries of veterinary science are constantly expanding, and marvellous life-saving or enhancing advancements follow, which improve outcomes for our critically ill patients. These advancements often come with a hefty price tag – providing round the clock progressive veterinary care in quality facilities is very expensive.

THE TROUBLE WITH RAW FEEDING… Raw feeding dogs and cats has gained a popular following over the past few years since we set up our lovely clinic in the West Lynn shops, behind Harvest Wholefoods in Grey Lynn, quickly followed by our stores in Glenfield, Ellerslie, Kumeu and Silverdale. Our clients are spreading the word down at the local dog parks and we have a loyal following of the healthiest looking dogs and cats you could wish to see. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our lovely clients for making our working life such a joy – how can we even call it work when we spend our days chatting to amazing people, with such interesting lives and such a cool approach to health and well-being. With the growing interest in raw food diets for pets it’s essential to get the basics right. A well-planned raw diet can support optimal health in cats and dogs. However, if the diet is not appropriate or well-planned, raw feeding can lead to health problems – some very serious. Grains make the stomach less acidic. If a cat or dog consuming grains (processed pet food), is also fed raw food, its stomach will not be acidic enough to properly digest the protein and bone. Ill-health will follow. If you are thinking about raw feeding, pop in to one of our five Auckland shops for the best possible advice. Many pet owners are overwhelmed by conflicting nutritional information. Let us simplify your pet’s nutrition so you can get back to having fun. If raw feeding your pet interests you, let us get you started. We provide a high quality, species-appropriate raw diet and optimise gastric acidity so that your pet can properly digest the raw food. If the diet is not well-planned and gastric acidity is inappropriate, you may find your dog is windy and has a grumbling tummy. They may have anal gland problems, irregular bowels, diarrhoea or constipation. Don’t delay, come in and see us at Raw Essentials. www.rawessentials.co.nz Dr Lyn Thomson

Not all pet insurance providers are created equal. The cheapest may not necessarily provide you with all the benefits you require. For this reason I recommend you read the fine print carefully to ensure your pet will be covered for life for all conditions. If you are shopping around for a better deal than you currently have, be aware that pre-existing conditions are not generally covered by new policies. Loving our pets unconditionally makes it very difficult to make medical decisions for them which are based largely on affordability. Depending on your attitude to risk, a monthly or yearly insurance fee could purchase you some peace of mind, reducing the importance of money and giving you the freedom to request the treatment for your sick or injured pet which seems most appropriate in your heart.
