UNVOLLENDETE. NEVER BUILT MAASTRICHT. Unrealised. Never Built Maastricht provides insight into the combined complexity within which urban planners, architects, landscape designers, politicians, and project developers work. In the arena of city visions, policy papers, public opinion, economic cycles, and the cultural Zeitgeist in which designers have to manoeuvre, Bureau Europe wants to be an advocate for experiment. Referencing Schubert’s unfinished symphony, Bureau Europa investigates what Maastricht would look like if some of its never-realised projects were executed.

DE TOONZAAL #2: CLD De Toonzaal offers a window to visual artists, designers, and architects. Adjacent to the street, they show work that investigates, expresses, or critically addresses issues about to the public domain. CLD is the 2nd artist passers-by will encounter. With her work, visual artist Chantal le Doux creates a mystical universe with its own logic, laws, and language. Expressing herself in various manners, she doesn't shy away from painting, objects, or installations. Her work can be understood as spatial painting, her compositions assembling different shapes, sizes, colour, and material tangibility in such a fashion that their meaning and interpretation transform in each given setting.

LAURIE CHARLES - SOLO Laurie Charles’ (BE, 1987) work comprises video art, painting, installation, textile and performance. Drawing upon theories like speculative realism or queer ecology, Charles is creating a sequel for her film ‘Love of Matter’ (2016). Her new work continues to explore how organisms, communities and utopias are interconnected. Charles - together with colleagues and friends - questions the concept of ‘going back to nature’
04.05.2017 26.08.2018
MARTIN BELOU - SOLO Martin Belou (FR, 1986) has a similar discovering look at the elements surrounding us. His practice finds affiliation with concepts of alchemy and shamanism: homegrown mushrooms, boiling kettles on gas fires or masks exemplify Belou’s work. His new creation departs from CIAP’s architectural elements to intervene with a great visual and tactile play with elements like earth and fire.

CIAP is an independent association for contemporary art. CIAP was founded in 1976 and its operating methods are very comparable to the German model of the Kunstverein, a model that is not well known in Flanders. CIAP aims to respond to the local art scene in a 2-way direction, on the one hand by presenting form within the local context towards a larger (eu)regional public and on the other hand by boosting the local artists, art-professionals and public by showing innovative international artistic developments.

JÜRGEN CLAUS: JE SUIS ATOLL - PICTURES AND MEDIA 1968-2018 The artist Jürgen Claus, who was born in Berlin in 1935 and has lived since 1989 in such places as Baelen in eastern Belgium, is considered to be one of the pioneers of media art. The exhibition at the IKOB – Museum of Contemporary Art is conceived more as a presentation of works than as a classic retrospective, even if the visitors to the exhibition will be offered a profound insight into the art of this exceptional artist through three thematically organized “atolls”. His greatest achievements include, not only the introduction of the issues of ecology to art, but also an extension of the field of artistic activity to the seas and oceans. His underwater happenings and exhibitions made history. In this exhibition, Jürgen Claus accordingly looks both far into the past and far into the future of a human species which must ask itself how it can continue to impact upon the earth without inevitably doing away with itself. →

The IKOB – Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen is located in the German-speaking part of Belgium, close to the German and the Dutch border. Its program focuses on emerging and leading contemporary art through the constitution of a significant collection (in progress) and temporary exhibitions (in dialogue). Functioning as a discursive platform for contemporary art with its multidisciplinary and thematic exhibition program and concerned with critical and socio-political issues, the IKOB attempts to reflect the matter of the frontier.

COLLECTION WITH LOSE ENDS: 21. - SECOND ACT Artworks from the Kunsthaus’ 21st century collection will be on display throughout the entire building. The contemporary topic of "body politics" is explored by Maren Maurer’s object boxes as well as Claus Richter’s wall object "Reader's Digest". On the back of the books there are suggestions for self-optimization such as "how to succeed in life without really trying".

QUESTIONING THE MEDIUM - SABRINA FRITSCH, ANNA VOGEL, MATTHIAS WOLLGAST Within the context of the collection presentation three young artists question contemporary media. Sabrina Fritsch deals with sensual and technical irritations, with works looking like paintings. For Anna Vogel photography is the starting point for her investigations on our visual behaviors. Matthias Wollgast presents an unkown artist of the 1970’s, who was addicted to the comparison of patterns on vases and patterns on swim suits.

Tanja Goethe is presenting cups with motives from the Kunsthaus’ collection in a fake museum shop, where you as well can drink tea, grown in the cloister garden, on a sculpture by Selma Gültoprak.

One is from Hainaut, the other is from Liège but they both express themselves through installation even if one is conceptual while the other is more abstract. Set up in 1979, La Châtaigneraie occupies a small manor house (1830-1840) bordered by age-old chestnut trees. Exhibitions range from a retrospective of a historical nature to the most contemporary expression, passing through all the techniques. In this way, La Châtaigneraie confirms its vocation as a place for promoting artists as well as the wish to create a place for meetings and awareness. VALDIS ABOLINŠ AND HOW FLUXUS CAME TO AACHEN When the lead figures of the FLUXUS-movement, such as Joseph Beuys, Wolf Vostell and Robert Filliou, took the stage at the Audimax of the Technical University, the performative avant-garde art arrived in Aachen with a bang. The initiator of the provocative action was the cultural speaker of the student council – Valdis Abolinš (1939-1984).

FLASHES OF THE FUTURE THE ART OF THE 68ERS OR THE POWER OF THE POWERLESS 1968 – there is hardly any other year of the 20th century of such symbolic and iconic status, so full of myths, associations, prejudices and emotions. The 1960s were not only the most innovative decade in art but many social developments were initiated during this decade as well, from which we still profit today.

PATTERN AND DECORATION. ORNAMENT AS PROMISE Life-affirming colors and ornamental forms on the one hand and a political-emancipatory claim on the other – the Pattern and Decoration movement combines perceived contradictions. In the mid-1970s, the movement developed in the USA, supported among others by feminist artists like Joyce Kozloff, Valerie Jaudon and Miriam Schapiro.

OBJECT LOVE Object Love reveals the intimate relations between humans and man made things. Things are everywhere. Our bodies are on, in and between them. They are an extension of our bodies, and enhance our capacities. We are physically and emotionally connected with things. We touch, cherish and hate things. Things are much more then physical objects. They are made by people to meet our needs, practically, as well as emotionally. We make utensils and symbolic objects. We communicate with them, and project meanings on them. Our relation with things has changed. Through the development of technology and the democratisation of consumption the number of things has exploded, and things have become infinitely complex. We always want more, exhausting the earth through our Object Love. And the things we created ourselves threaten to outwit us. Artists: Melanie Bojano, Machiel Braaksma, Yvonne Dröge Wendel, Ni Haifeng, Ted Noten, Erwin Olaf, Hans Op de Beeck, Maria Roosen, Bas de Wit, Erwin Wurm among others. →

art
does not need a common language,
it is international
in itself.
The association of institutions in the Meuse-Rhine Region is as contemporary as the art they present. Within a radius of 100 km, the border region of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands offers a wide variety of exhibitions and events, many of which can be visited in one day. The venues each have a highly individual approach and present art in the most appealing way: direct and inspirational, reflective and atmospheric. This brochure wants to increase the awareness of what this region has to offer in terms of visual arts. It is published twice a year and gives an overview of exhibitions and events.
