TOON TEEKEN
STEPHEN WILKS – BOTTLE RIVER (VESSELS) BONNEFANTEN HEDGE HOUSE, WIJLRE ‘Bottle River(Vessels)’ can be found all across the museum floor. We can see a thousand ceramic bottles flowing along the exhibition space. The image evokes a range of associations: a river, a flood of people, pollution of the oceans, and the contradiction between the beauty of ceramics and the ubiquitous disposable plastic bottles. Do we see a reference to mass culture? Or the fragility of a single ceramic piece? The balance between nature, humanity, and our enviroment is reflected in this monumental installation by Stephen Wilks (1964), who lives and works in Berlin. →
The Bonnefantenmuseum has a collection of old masters and a collection of modern and contemporary art. The old masters on display include works by mediaeval sculptor Jan van Steffeswert, and early Netherlandish and Italian paintings. The modern and contemporary art collections consist of artworks by internationally renowned artists, with a historically grown focus on movements such as Concept Art, Minimal Art and Arte Povera. The spectacular museum building was designed by Aldo Rossi. The museum also offers various guided tours and activities for children.

DESIGN BY CHOICE 19TH-CENTURY ORIGINS OF MASS CUSTOMISATION IN EUROPE The exhibition investigates the origins of contemporary consumer society. At its centre is a representative sample of European cast iron trade catalogues. By the mid-nineteenth century, when furnace technology was improved, foundries in Scotland, France, and Prussia set the pace for product innovation. Together with their products, foundries also invented a new commercial means: the trade catalogue. 'Design by Choice' invites visitors to discover former objects of desire as depicted in nineteenth-century trade literature. Focussing on the European dimension of the Industrial Revolution, international exchanges and commonalities are addressed. Curator: Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Axel Sowa (Architekturtheorie RWTH-Aachen University)

RECIPROCITIES In the context of the Design Triennale Liège ‘Reciprocity’, Bureau Europa has commissioned artist Kim Bouvy to investigate how the contemporary identities of Liège and Maastricht were defined by their specific history of industry and trade. The cities of Maastricht and Liège and their actual cross-border connection in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR), connote important benchmarks in the realisation of the European Union.

CIAP is an independent association for contemporary art. CIAP was founded in 1976 and its operating methods are very comparable to the German model of the Kunstverein, a model that is not well known in Flanders. CIAP aims to respond to the local art scene in a 2-way direction, on the one hand by presenting from within the local context towards a larger (eu)regional public and on the other hand by boosting the local artists, art-professionals and public by showing innovative international artistic developments.

ART BERBÈRE, REGARDS SUR UNE COLLECTION It is an occasion not only to share the richness of the Amazigh civilization, but also to honor Berber women, to whom the Amazigh culture owes its survival. The survival of a culture depends on the transmission of language, but also on certain, essentially feminine, skills, such as weaving or, in the northern region of the Kingdom, pottery.

As an artist, painter, designer, videographer and comic conceptual artist, Lizène continues to produce quirky, uninteresting, vaguely humorous usually stupid and above all cheek-in-tongue works that nonetheless remain rooted in a radical critique of the art system.

FIG. 2 – MARCEL BERLANGER With his singular and determinant position in the artistic scene of Belgium, Marcel Berlanger formulates the way by which the picture constructs itself nowadays, through which process it engraves itself in our consciousness and uses its power of reminiscence on them. His work deals with the figure’s pictorial inscription in all the complexity of its perceptive dimensions (spatial, temporal and sonorous). Echoing the quality of the space and the singularity of the ikob’s cross-border context, Fig. 2 literally opens up the imaginary field of the picture to that of the place, functioning in the exhibition space as a rhizome. Familiar and distant, the works will superimpose and associate with each other to create thematic relations and formal critics.

FERRAN ADRIÀ, NOTES ON CREATIVITY For years, Ferran Adrià was the head chef of elBulli, the world's most famous restaurant in the small resort of Roses, one hour north of Barcelona. The restaurant only opened for six months a year. For the rest of the year, the chef withdrew to his laboratory to develop new recipes. Ferran Adrià ignited a revolution in the kitchen, not only in terms of food, but also in its design, cooking utensils and menus. Every innovation was accompanied by drawings, diagrams and formal experiments, through which Adrià translated the vocabulary of taste into the visual domain.

JASPER RIGOLE 81 THINGS I THOUGHT I HAD FORGOTTEN Z33 presents the first solo exhibition of the Flemish artist Jasper Rigole. Over the past ten years, Rigole has been working on the fictitious Institute IICADOM (The International Institute for the Conservation, Archiving and Distribution of Other people’s Memories) where he lodges collections of objects, 8 mm films, pictures, tapes and other found footage and discoveries. In a unique presentation, personal and collective memory, institutional accuracy and pure chance, fact and fiction, history and nostalgia intertwine. more info: www.jasperrigole.com Exhibition in collaboration with Flemish Arts Centre De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam

Z33 is a house for contemporary art. Z33 creates projects and exhibitions which encourage the visitor to take a different look at everyday life. It is a unique laboratory and a meeting space for experiments and innovation that makes ground breaking exhibitions featuring contemporary art and design. Z33 does not have its own collection, but has a permanent exhibition offer. You can visit Z33 in the beguinage of Hasselt. Z33 also develops art projects in public space and curates projects for external organisations. For each exhibition, Z33 develops a tailored program for families, teachers, teenagers and children, aimed at individuals as well as groups.

art
does not need a common language,
it is international
by itself.
The association of fourteen institutions in the Meuse-Rhine Region is as contemporary as the art they present. Within a radius of 100 km, the border region of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany offers a wide varity of exhibitions and events, many of which can be visited in one day. The venues each have a higly individual approach and present art in the most appealing way: direct and inspirational, reflective and atmospheric. This brochure wants to increase the awareness of what this region has to offer in terms of visual arts. It is published twice a year and gives an overview of exhibitions and events.
