Maurice, How can I tempt you to imagine that an exhibition of stripe paintings could be so vital to the conversation of art in our century? I must be brief because stripes don’t wait but are, by definition, in perpetual motion. As a young boy I was told that sailors wear striped shirts to sail faster. Imagine then my surprise, having discovered the speed with which I completed my last painting, a stripe painting . It was as though the stripes themselves had taken hold of the brush which, now operating on their terms, moved with alien swiftness. I propose an exhibition of paintings devoted to the stripe in all its deviations, because the stripe, like your Kunstverein in the park, is both a part of nature and seemingly against it. Not unlike the Ionian grove at the Acropolis, with its continuous colonnade of columns, the stripe

celebrates the breaking of limits, the ready acquiescence of nature to human action, and the victory of the polis over everything. If the Parthenon, largely completed in 432, sacralized democracy with its metered, striped sequence of polychrome stone and space (the people of Athens crowd its frieze too), Malevich’s Black Square of 1914 was the radical reduction of the democratic image and its frame. This black square impressed itself into the minds of artists and historians as inescapable and ontologically democratic; inescapable because all images are simultaneously the black square, and democratic because all representations reside in its now secular frame. The stripe, however, resists enclosure within systems. Its frame is infinite and stretches in all directions. Where does the stripe begin and where does it end? After about 6 stripes, the stripe is no longer readable as a body

without counting, but as a continuity. Extensive striping will confuse even the most diligent of stripe counters. Figure/ ground distinctions are nowhere to be found — which stripe is over and which is under? Is the zebra a white animal with black stripes or a black animal with white stripes? Clearly, the stripe is as much a visual problem as a cultural one too; the stripe is metonymic. I can hear you thinking, “But there are many stripe paintings already! At this very moment Daniel Buren’s fleet of sailboats donning 8.7 cm stripes are racing The River Charles!” Well, my stripes are broken, like the broken tiers of stripes in the temple cella. And not unlike the ancient Greek conception of the temple they are unchained abstractions like forests or ships which, showing their parts broken again and again, could produce just enough clarification and confusion to resist crystalizing into a sign. THE THIRD SPACE – SPACE AND SPATIALITY IN THE WORKS OF KRISTINA DE CHÂTEL Krisztina de Châtel’s influential work is known for its powerful synthesis of her choreographies and their spatial contexts. To echo how the dancers in her choreographies are influenced by the spatial conditions of the environment in which they dance, the visitor will also experience a similar sense of contextual physicality when visiting The Third Space. De Châtel’s choreographies have progressively revealed her vision of society and are renowned for the interactions between body and space. This exhibition, which is organised in collaboration with the Dutch Dance Festival, marks Krisztina de Châtel’s 75th birthday.

STUCCO STORICO: THE STORY OF STUCCO IN THE EUREGIO The exhibition shows the remarkable art of decorative stucco in the domain of Very Contemporary and the inspiring diaspora of master stuccatori, born and raised at Lake Lugano in the 18th century, creating typical, hybrid styles seen nowhere else. Though mostly practical, for its many useful qualities, the migrants raised stucco to art: the interiors of buildings were not only plastered but also exuberantly decorated with illusional sculptures protruding from the surface. The ornamental styles thus dictated a room’s function and how its occupants behaved. Stucco Storico shows a selection of interiors and studies how they were created. What place did stucco occupy in the 18th century? What techniques were used?

Bureau Europa, platform for architecture and design, presents exhibitions, lectures, workshops and other activities in architecture, urbanism and design. We aim to advance knowledge production and talent development in design and to engage a broad audience. We articulate our aims through cultural projects at our institute and in the public domain. We focus primarily on the common social agenda of Europe and the Maas-Rhine Euroregion.

WHERE WIDOWED OBJECTS MEET ORPHANED IDEAS A group show curated by Alicja Melzacka With: Ingel Vaikla, Emile Hermans, Anaïs Chabeur, Rokko Miyoshi, Sara Bachour, Kornel Janczy, Julita wojcik. In typography, ‘widows’ and ‘orphans’ are the lines standing alone at the top or bottom of a page, separated from the core paragraph. In this group show, they function as an analogy for other entities that have been purposely or accidentally detached from their context and whose meanings become subject to renegotiation.

ALDA & ARMAND (SOLO LEEN VOET) Curated by Louise Osieka In her solo show 'Alda & Armand' Leen Voet (BE, 1971) presents a new series of large-scale oil paintings. These paintings are based on a gift from her father including four kitchen towels from the ‘70s depicting flowers. Voet translated these silkscreen images to painted reproductions ranging from exact copies to stylistic variations. Her paintings are integrated in the historical interior and therefore starting a dialogue with the existing neo-medieval 19th-century paintings.

MINECRAFT ECOLOGIES (EXPERIMENT BY ARTIST LODEWIJK HEYLEN) 'Minecraft Ecologies' is an attempt at the limits and possibilities of a self-organizing system. The collected data will give rise to an all-encompassing experiment, where technology and human interaction are central. Different computers will be available for the visitors to play the game Minecraft. Each player is asked to communicate with the other players via a chat room. These conversations will be automatically converted to text and will be broadcast in real-time in the exhibition.

CIAP has been a beacon of contemporary visual arts in Hasselt since 1976. As a non-profit independent testing ground for visual artists, CIAP organizes a diverse program by both national and international emerging artists and overlooked local artists.

BASICALLY, IT'S VERY PRAGMATIC Art collections are strange creatures. They are heterogeneous, erratic and often follow highly pragmatic considerations. This makes them extremely exciting indicators of what we call culture. Together with the Space Collection from Liège and in collaboration with BPS22, IKOB is showing a cross-section of the collections involved.

23.01.2019 24.03.2019

ANDREA ÉVA GYŐRI Andrea Eva Györi is one of the most important Hungarian artists of her generation. In her drawings and videos she often focuses on feminist issues. Two years ago she mainly worked in the field of female sexuality, but most recently breast cancer and the vulnerability of bodies became the focus of her artistic work. Disturbingly direct videos and drawings emerged, which speak of loss, illness and the self-healing power through self-invented rituals.

14.04.2019 16.06.2019

CHLOÉ OP DE BEECK - AND THEN WE TAKE IT FROM HERE Chloé Op de Beeck seeks to give the trivial moments of everyday life special attention, using film, photography and (found) objects in an installative way. An ambiguity between objectivity and subjectivity emerges from her work, a tension between distance, intimacy and sensuality. In her approach to the museum as a playful workplace, Chloé will assemble at IKOB a constellation of captured fragments and objects, creating a place in which her videos interact with the space, and the viewer moving through the space, becomes part of a scenography.

The IKOB – Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen is located in the German-speaking part of Belgium, close to the German and the Dutch border. Its program focuses on emerging and leading contemporary art through the constitution of a significant collection (in progress) and temporary exhibitions (in dialogue). Functioning as a discursive platform for contemporary art with its multidisciplinary and thematic exhibition program and concerned with critical and socio-political issues, the IKOB attempts to reflect the matter of the frontier.

BÜRO KOMPLEX – THE ART OF THE ARTOTHEK IN THE POLITICAL SPHERE Since the 27th October 1948 the ministry of culture acquires artworks of young visual artists with relation to the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The current collection comprises around 4.000 artworks of which one third is generally lent to offices, conference halls and foyers of the federal ministries. Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the funding program and the collection with its Artothek, the Kunsthaus presents a detailed exhibition about this antagonistic duo – art and office. Based on works of the collection and interventions by contemporary artists, the office is shown as a place of art, revealing the relationship of art and politics. The exhibition combines questions about the changing position of the office as workplace, about administration bureaus as the place of political power, demonstrating history as well as art history in the Rhineland and Westphalia. →

The exhibition program of the Kunsthaus NRW Kornelimünster offers an insight into North Rhine-Westphalia’s current and future art scene. Since 1948, NRW has been purchasing works by young artists to support them. Today, the collection numbers 4000 works, documenting the history of North Rhine-Westphalia’s art to the immediate present day. The collection is hosted in the baroque palace building of the old Abbey of Kornelimünster.

DANIEL MICHIELS – ARDENNES’S PHOTOGRAPHER Daniel Michiels (Brussels, 1952) moved to La Roche-en-Ardenne in 1988. This region of adoption becomes its favorite theme. It deals with rural housing, farmers. Little by little, he will widen his field of investigation, he mixes the portrait, the landscape and the various scenes. His work is largely inspired by his daily life. The portraits he makes are also those of his entourage. He strives to make the Ardennes unreal, timeless, beautiful and touching.

Set up in 1979, La Châtaigneraie occupies a small manor house (1830-1840) bordered by age-old chestnut trees. Exhibitions range from a retrospective of a historical nature to the most contemporary expression, passing through all the techniques. In this way, La Châtaigneraie confirms its vocation as a place for promoting artists as well as the wish to create a place for meetings and awareness. The Centre publishes historical works and monographs.

PATTERN AND DECORATION. ORNAMENT AS PROMISE In the mid-1970s, Pattern and Decoration developed in the USA as one of the last art movements of the 20th century, in which the participation of women was as prominent as never before. In reclaiming fantasy, color, variations of forms as well as sensuality, they radically distinguished themselves from the predominant Minimal Art and Concept Art at that time.

THE INVENTION OF THE "NEUE WILDE" The success story of this young German generation of painters, whose wild and exuberant paintings were celebrated internationally as the return of figurative painting in the early 1980s, has become an art historical myth. In addition to large- format paintings from the Ludwig Collection, the exhibition also look at how the artists in the beginning experimented with photography, fashion, performance, film and music.

THRILL OF DECEPTION. FROM ANCIENT ART TO VIRTUAL REALITY Art has always played with the possibilities of illusion and deception. Their successful implementation is proof of a truly artistic mastery and a challenge for every artist since antiquity. Fascinating works of illusion and eye deception from four millennia - from an ancient Egyptian fake door over early trompe-l'oeil paintings to augmented and virtual reality - offer an exciting course through the (art) history of deception.

The Ludwig Forum Aachen is a multi-genre house for international contemporary art. It bases on the art collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig that comprises key works of Pop Art, Photo Realism and European art from the beginning 1960s to the present. This is the starting point for an attractive exhibition program. Art education offers many activities and guided tours for all ages and types of groups, available in Dutch, French and English.

art

does not need a common language,

it is international

in itself.

Very Contemporary is the network of contemporary art venues in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion. The partners relate to each other through the language of contemporary art. The border region of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany is their common ground. Very Contemporary is as contemporary as the art presented here: Within a radius of 100 km, the network offers a wide variety of exhibitions and events. Each venue has a highly individual approach and presents art in the most appealing way - direct and inspirational, reflective and atmospheric. This brochure is published twice a year and gives an overview of what the partners have to offer in terms of visual arts. Get a regular update on exhibition openings, lectures or guided tours on: → www.verycontemporary.org → www.facebook.com/verycontemporaryart We are looking forward to hearing from you under: → info@verycontemporary.org
