ues in n e v d n a s n io it Exhib in the rt A ry ra o p m te n Co hine Euregio Maas-R ‘Very Contemporary’ - that is what the exhibitions in the Euregio Maas Rhine are. All of them are listed in this new programme brochure. Along a geographical line that leads from Hasselt in the West to Aachen in the East, art spaces such as the Z33, the Bonnefantenmuseum, the Marres, the Schunck* Glaspaleis, the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein and the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst show contemporary art in unique rooms from an international perspective. The locations are only 40-70 km away from each other. An incentive to get on the road and make a tour through three countries in one day

and visit several institutions at a time. The number of programmes and possibilties is impressive. The locations each have a very individual approach and present art in the most appealing way: direct and inspirational, reflective and in a special atmosphere. An umbrella factory from the 1930s, museal architecture of the 1990s, a converted shopping mall from 1935 or the former Beguinage. Get inspired to get on the road with ‘Very Contemporary’ as your travel guide. Have fun! Dr. Brigitte Franzen, Ludwig Forum Aachen

K* C UN

SCHUNCK* is a new kind of multidisciplinary cultural institution that aspires to act as a dynamo for a discerning and critical artistic and cultural encounter between local districts and the world at large, within the context of the southern Dutch Euro region. SCHUNCK* assembles a museum of modern and contemporary art, a research and presentation centre for architecture and town planning, a public library and a music school. Combining forces in this way allows SCHUNCK, on the one hand, to function as a ‘site de création’, and as an educational and presentational institute concerned with architecture, visual art and film as well as, and this is a new augmentation, literature, music and dance. On the other hand, SCHUNCK is correspondingly a fully-fledged professional museum thanks to the collections. SCHUNCK* is housed in the Glaspaleis, a unique edifice built by the architect Frits Peutz in 1935 that is included in the uia index of the 1000 most significant architectural monuments of the 20th Century.

Marres Marres initiates exhibitions, lectures, research, publications and projects, rooted in a cultural, philosophical background and a specific interest in the problem of actuality. The relation with the immediate local environment is often employed as a means to refine a more universal agenda in order to produce innovative exhibition models. Marres aims to utilize the eighteenth century aristocratic building in such a manner that the content of the programme is merged with the idea of a residence and its connected intimacy.

PROGRAMME Couleur Radicaal In het spoor van de Heerlense avant-garde 26 May – 12 August 2012 Marres Projects and SCHUNCK* explore together how the universalist principles of modernism have influenced local developments, using ‘Heerlen’ as case study. Ludwig Forum Aachen The Ludwig Forum Aachen is a multi-genre house for international contemporary art. Its basis is the art collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig that comprises key works of American Pop Art, Photo Realism and European art from the beginning 1960s to the present. This is the starting point for an attractive exhibition programme that presents both influential positions in the contemporary art scene as well as young artists and thematic exhibitions. A comprehensive educational programme and library are part of the service as well. Since 1983, the biannual Aachen Art Prize has been awarded in the Ludwig Forum. In 2012 the British artist Phyllida Barlow, whose works are characterized by a strong connection to a place, received the prize. The Ludwig Forum itself as an industrial building from 1928 in International Style is a special piece of architecture and witness of the transformation from a place of industrial production to cultural production.

This twofold autonomy predestines the Kunstverein to be a space for artistic experimentation, where innovative curatorial work can be accomplished without spurious consideration. for political duties or mercantile calculations. In addition, its slender organisational form allows it to react flexibly, quickly and non-bureaucratically to current artistic developments and to actively engage in these.

er u e N er n e h Aac rein e v t Kuns NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein is one of the youngest institutions of its kind in Germany; a private non-profit association for contemporary art in the tradition of the German Kunstverein model. Where the Kunstverein as an institution and its significance is based on a tradition going back more than 200 years, starting in the era of enlightenment as a legacy of the rising bourgeoisie for showing contemporary art and social exchange, NAK was founded in 1986 as a late echo of the 1964 Fluxus festival, with Joseph Beuys and Wolf Vostell as center protagonist at the local university in Aachen. The spirit of this moment has since been source of commitment to contemporary art. NAK is a core institution of the local art scene, but way beyond this, it is also internationally recognised as an innovative platform for contemporary art and its discourse.
