Open Space Artist Contribution

Draftsmen’s Congress, Berlin Biennale 2012, initiated by Paweł Althamer, Photo: Marcin Kalinski

This summer the Polish artist Paweł Althamer is to undertake an experimental art project in Aachen. For four months he and his friends from the artist group "Reactor - Sculpture Lab" will move into the Ludwig Forum Aachen and seek to shed light on themes such as power, authority, and freedom from a completely different perspective: from the standpoint of children. The motivation to try something so different and daring is the 1200th anniversary of the death of Charlemagne, one of the most powerful rulers in the Middle Ages.

Born in Warsaw in 1967, Althamer has firmly established himself in the international art scene since the mid-1990s. He has taken part for example in documenta X (1997) in Kassel, Manifesta 3 (2000) in Ljubljana, the Skulptur Projekte Münster (2007), as well as the most recent Venice Biennale (2013). Important museums have held solo exhibitions for the artist, including the Kunsthalle Basel (1997) , the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (2001), the Centre Pompidou in Paris (2006), and the New Museum in New York (2014). In 2004 the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht awarded the artist the “Vincent van Gogh Bi-Annual Award for Contemporary Art in Europe” (current Bonnefanten Award for Contemporary Art - BACA). The Aachen Kunstpreis followed in 2010. The artist group "Reactor - Sculpture Lab" is a collective of young graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where also Althamer comes from. They are doing processlike actions with children and youth and working together with Althamer from time to time.

Paweł Althamer’s concern is to identify action-oriented experiments with freedom. It is part of his strategy to undermine existing systems of rules and evoke new models of action. “To be in a process, that is the point. […] My work is all about getting others to comprehend this.” (Althamer)

Often he turns the spotlight on people whose voices usually go unheard. These include the homeless, prison inmates, migrants or children and youths without any prospects. For them, and together with them, he conceives of microcosms in which his “greatest project”, the interpenetration of art and life, can take place.

The Aachen project “Children’s Kingdom” in summer 2014 (June 1 – September 21) draws on the book King Matt by Janusz Korczak. Exploring the idea of a children’s republic, the project enters the contemporary discourses on freedom and power as well as organization and politics, while inverting the hierarchical relationship between adults and children. The “Children’s Kingdom” is thus a laboratory for democracy and democratic practice. In a number of

experimental workshops, held by Althamer and his friends, the Ludwig Forum and its surroundings will be transformed. Everyone is invited to a Draftmen's Congress and an Open Academy. A street festival and parade will take place on September 14. Come and join us! Admission free thoughout the whole museum from June 1st to September 21st. CIAP is an independent association for contemporary art. CIAP was founded in 1976 and its operating methods are very comparable to the German model of the Kunstverrein, a model that is not well known in Flanders. CIAP aims to respond to the local art scene in a two-way direction, on the one hand by presenting from within the local context towards a larger (eu)regional public and on the other hand by boosting the local artists, art-professionals and public by showing innovative international artistic developments.

Exhibition and public programme search for the power of imagination in contemporary culture, focusing on architecture/urbanism. For centuries, the architecture discipline has involved fundamental rethinking, redefining and reviewing the structures and systems that organize our society. In the exhibition, examples of this rich tradition of ‘redefiners’ (Constant, Friedman, Calvino, Woods, OMA/AMO) are interwoven with current practices and thinkers.

As a presentation and network organisation, Bureau Europa/platform for architecture presents exhibitions and other activities in the field of architecture and design from a social perspective. Bureau Europa’s focus is mainly on Europe and the Euregion in connection with their social agenda.

THE UNWRITTEN 7—9—2014 → 2—11—2014

They document personal, and reconfigure collective narratives by adding silent episodes, surprising prequels of what we know to have existed. With works by Adela Babanova, Carlos Motta, Annie Kevans and Zachary Formwalt.

Marres is a house for contemporary culture in Maastricht. Marres initiates and shows a variety of contemporary artistic practices with a strong emphasis on the senses. It works with visual artists, perfume makers, composers, herbalists, memory experts and cooks. In Marres, artists sing the landscape, draw taste, let us feel music, and touch our minds. In addition to exhibition spaces, Marres offers its visitors also a restaurant (Marres Kitchen) and a lush garden.

The work of American artist, biologist and conservationist Brandon Ballengée (Sandusky, Ohio, US, 1974) provides prominent and striking proof of the fruitful collaboration between art and science. Seasons in Hell – the title is borrowed from a poem by Arthur Rimbaud – is Ballengée’s first solo museum exhibition in the Netherlands. It features paintings, photos, installations, sculptures, and videos from 1996 through the present and can be considered as a concise retrospective. During the month of May, the artist will be in Sittard to conduct exhibition tours, take school groups out on nature excursions, and lead field trips for youths and adults. Anyone who wants to contribute to the study of malformations in amphibians in and around Sittard is welcome to join field trips on May 11, 18, and 25 at 11am. This is likely the first time since the early 1960s that field research into deformities in amphibians has been conducted in the Netherlands.

Museum het Domein is a relative young museum for contemporary art and urban history and archaeology. A museum that takes a lively, creative, and idiosyncratic approach to presenting the history of its region and its city, and current developments in international contemporary art. Museum Het Domein is a cultural institution of the commune Sittard Geleen Born and is located in a former nineteenth-century municipal school in the historic centre of Sittard.

Contemporary —Art— Bus—Tours

25+26—10—2014, all houses On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October, you can discover the interesting Meuse-Rhine Euregion visual arts scene by coach. The Contemporary–Art– Bus takes you from art spot to art spot across the border. You can find details on this as of autumn 2014 on www.verycontemporary.org.

Art does not need a common language, it is international by itself. The association of thirteen institutions of in the Meuse-Rhine Region is therefore as contemporary as the art they present. Within a radius of 100 km, the border region of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany offers a large diversity of exhibitions and events many of which can be visited in one day. The locations each have a very individual approach and present art in the most appealing way: direct and inspirational, reflective and in a special atmosphere. This brochure wants to increase the awareness of what this region has to offer in terms of visual arts. It is published twice per year and gives an overview of exhibitions and events.
