PROFESSIONAL LEARNING Teaching & Learning Conference TDA National Conference VET Leaders Lunch Empowering Trade Teachers Teaching Fellowship: Where are they now? Podomatic New! Digital Learning Program

COMMENT PIECE

CEO MESSAGE Every now and again I’m asked for our perspective on the current issues in the VET sector and my usual response is that it is undergoing transformational change unlike anything we have seen for a very long time. This came to light again recently as a consequence of attending the EduTech Conference in Brisbane. The focus of this conference was predominantly related to new and emerging technologies and the various presentations certainly sparked considered discussions regarding the changing nature of teaching and learning and consequently the impact on the VET practitioner. There has been a plethora of reports and related research identifying a range of barriers and challenges to the full uptake of e-learning in VET. This includes trainer’s variable e-learning capability, their attitudes to e-learning, their ability to make decisions regarding the choice of e-learning tools and content and meeting technological requirements – fear about technology and fear about the ability to provide a successful program. But as we all experience in multiple ways, we are now living in a digital world that provides

24/7 access to information. The considerable benefits to the learner include the provision of increased choice with the opportunity for personalised learning i.e. the Amazon experience. The rise of massive open online courses (MOOCs) and open educational resources (OERs) can provide more equitable access to high quality resources but the provision of same can impact on providers and practitioner’s ability, time and resources to meet new learner demands and needs. New and not so new, trends in this space include using learning analytics – or data to influence decision making; embedding the flipped classroom concept, the greater use of MOOCs, OERs and short open courses, the increasing use of the natural user interface (NUI) i.e. touch screen, gesture based integration, the increasing use of bring your own device (BYOD), gamification and the use of badges to stimulate engagement.

the driver and technology the accelerator’ in this space and that what the system is seeing and needs to come to grips with is that technology, pedagogy/andragogy and changing dynamics are converging and at high speed. Equally this is still about good teaching and learning but using technology to enhance the experience....we need to get rid of the ‘e-learning’ tag so that we can reinforce the notion that it is just about great teaching and learning with the use and integration of a range of methodologies. Denise Stevens

What is required in the digital learning space is a focus on leadership, collaboration and knowledge sharing; however, historically this is not an intrinsic quality of the VET Sector. The renowned Canadian educator, Michael Fullan identified that ‘pedagogy is
