United Way o the CSRA
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Community Partner, The 2011-2012 Honor Roll is dedicated to you, our Top Leadership and Corporate donors. 2011 was an exciting year for United Way of the CSRA. We celebrated our 75th anniversary of service to the local community with many exciting events, and we moved into our new home at the Kroc First Stop Center. Thanks to our long-time supporters and new partners, we accomplished great things – together – to improve the quality of life for our local residents: • The community rallied under the leadership of Campaign Chair Zack Daffin to exceed the $4.1 million goal by raising $4,129,623. • Funding was provided to 42 local health and human service programs with a focus on helping youth succeed, promoting health and wellness, providing basic needs, and strengthening families and individuals. • For the first time in 15 years, United Way welcomed six new nonprofit partner agencies: Child Enrichment, Inc.; Christ Community Health Services; Columbia County Community Connections; Easter Seals East Georgia, Inc.; Hope House, Inc.; and Ronald McDonald House. • Our FamilyWize program saved the community $362,409 in prescription drug costs ($893,685 saved since its inception in July 2009). • Through a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) grant, free tax preparation assistance was provided to 794 applicants, providing them $912,693 in tax refunds and $373,843 in Earned Income Tax Credits. • A $524,742 AmeriCorps VISTA grant, administered by United Way, provided 22 volunteers and 14 summer associates to enhance nonprofit agency infrastructure. • Through the 2-1-1 helpline, 24,741 callers were connected to vital community resources. A new 2-1-1 interactive website was launched providing a free, online directory of available health and human services. All this and more was made possible with your support and continued commitment to improving lives in the CSRA. When you contributed to United Way’s 2011 Campaign, you gave more than dollars and cents; you gave hope and help to thousands of local residents. Please know that when you contribute to this United Way, you are investing in a proficient and responsible organization that makes a difference and is positioned to continue working effectively for our community. By “Living and Giving United”, you joined others to advance the common good, and for that many are truly grateful. On behalf of United Way’s Board of Directors, community partners and staff, thank you for your continued partnership, for responding to the challenge of our economic times, and for sharing our vision to bring people and resources together to build self-sufficient lives. United, we are making a difference. Sincerely,
La Verne H. Gold President/CEO

The Toc ueville Society
Alexis de Tocqueville “When an American asks for the cooperation of his fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously and with great good will.”
REFLECTIONS ON TOCQUEVILLE French Aristocrat Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville came to America in 1831. His travels took him all over the young nation where he was a keen observer of American society. His observations formed the basis of Democracy in America, a detailed study of American society and politics, published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840. Perhaps the most important observation was that Americans helped each other in times of need. He recognized, applauded, and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in Americans’ hearts.
THE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY The Tocqueville Society was created by United Way of America in 1972 to recognize persons who have rendered outstanding volunteer service in their communities or on a national level through the presentation of a National Tocqueville Society award. It also exists to promote voluntary community service and to recognize the value of such service to our nation. The Society is directed by members of United Way Worldwide’s Board of Governors. The name Tocqueville Society was chosen because of Tocqueville’s admiration for the spirit of voluntary association and effort for the common good, a spirit he observed in America and wrote about enthusiastically. The Tocqueville Society is a prestigious and exciting division of United Way’s fund raising. When a community leader becomes a member, he or she becomes part of a nationally recognized leadership program. Its members are characterized by extraordinary leadership and commitment to their community. Tocqueville members join a select group of community leaders who have declared, through their action, that their community is worthy of significant personal investment.

United Way of the Central Savannah River Area joined The Tocqueville Society in 1996. As The Tocqueville Society of the CSRA enters its sixteenth year, United Way is proud to acknowledge The Tocqueville Society members who are recognized on the following pages. These investors are dedicated to our community’s strong tradition of caring. They have made a significant personal investment and are leading the way to a better community for us all.
