She’s going to be busy as a bee next fall…literally! Along with other aspiring artists and designers, Keyotta Mells will be buzzing with activities as an incoming freshman at the prestigious Savannah College of Art & Design, home to mascot Art the Bee. She attributes her academic success to the support she received from Communities In Schools of Burke County (CIS) along with her mentor, Teresa. After suffering the loss of her father, Keyotta attended a CIS summer camp to help her cope with the pain. But, to her surprise, it did so much more. As she explains, “CIS is not just about giving kids something to do, it’s about motivating them to not only do better, but to be better. My drive and motivation to accomplish my dreams has been ignited by the push CIS has given me.” Spoken like a true artist! Your gift to United Way helps young people like Keyotta to achieve success in life.

Suffering from a very severe breathing attack, Mr. M went to a local hospital with much trepidation. Not only was he concerned about his COPD, he was worried about not having a doctor. As fate would have it, Dr. Ayres from Christ Community Health Services was on duty that same day. Thus began a turning point for Mr. M as he found a new physician to care for him.

As Mr. M explains, “They’ve been very kind to me. I’m on a limited budget [and] just couldn’t afford to go to another physician”. Christ Community Health has been “a very pleasant experience all the way around,” he says with enthusiasm. “Everybody at the clinic is just absolutely wonderful. They’ve always got a kind word, [and] they’ll give you a hug if you’re having a bad day,” he adds. For Mr. M, having these health services available is like a prescription of healing medicine, and all this was made possible by your donations to United Way.
