PROJECT INFORMATION

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Title: ‘Echoes in an Urban Sound Barrier’

This project deals with the investigation of noise pollution from air-crafts and winds surrounding London City Airport area. It is mainly a sound-barrier park of 800 meters long. The guest can interact also, with the sustainable research laboratory facility which is part of the park. The idea of a globalization for library is in place. Thus, a traveller from UK (at the LCA) to a different country, can record and send sounds at the sound library in the form of mp3. Then, on-site visitors can enjoy different mixtures of sounds, from different countries and places. The dynamic and fluid forms of the building, along with the surfaces and materials of the ‘sound barrier’, are helping to sense the wind at its max; as well as to stop or reflect the sound. In addition, parts of the facade of the barrier act for retrofitting purposes. The building is becoming a sculptural piece, having two main functions (a) becomes a barrier for aircraft’ noise and (b) improves the sensory experience of different sounds produce by the air and winds found on site. Different instrumental moments are been generated to sense the wind found on site using arduino. These will always change due to the change of winds. Various materials that bounce, reflect or absorb the sound have been used. Such as, pyramid foams and canvas sailing fabric. Also, some structural ways to construct it for example, waffle structure becomes it self a sound absorbing element. Light can also pass through the opening of the building, for the purposes of lighting and shadowed areas.

PROJECT INFORMATION

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Title: ‘Fiatal’ budapest - dark days, chilly nights

Water, the element that gives you life, can also keep you young. It is a multi-functional element that can generate a better quality of life. At the beginning of our life cycle the human embryo is enclosed within water. Our needs and life processes are “controlled” by this element, which is found in all that surrounds our cosmos. Seas, rivers, lakes and rain. Due to its pureness water is also difficult to appreciate. It is an element that we take for granted. Budapest is a city built on several water springs and water caves. Water has always been used on citizens and visitors of this city, for treatment purposes such as the treatment of skin diseases and rheumatism. Therefore water has to be provided for users in a way that respects, recognises and understands its abilities. The journeys played out in this project create spaces in which to experience two forms of water, gas and liquid, through our five senses. Water is pumped from underground and then naturally filtered to produce drinking water. Also, the same pumped water is boiled and evaporated. Salts are collected and then taken by the guest for personal use or they are used for cosmetics and skincare at the baths. The routes formed through the external environment of the building clarify the various forms of consumption of the spring water. The baths are designed to provide moments of socialization and different treatments. Volumes getting in or going out of the baths and cuts providing the space with light, from the top ceiling; are techniques to create a monumental atmosphere. The waterfall runs from the top of the Glass Box (Water Monument) through the whole of exterior and interior of the building. This creates the gas form (steam) through changes in temperature.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Exhibition Space Design

‘Byzantine Museum of Cyprus’ and ‘Cypriot Studies’ Company’ lunched ‘Life After Death‘ exhibition under ‘Paphos 2017 - Europe’s Capital of Culture’, Cyprus. The project took place at recently renovated, old Electricity Authority of Cyprus - Powerhouse in Paphos. I was hired to create a 3D model of gallery’s space and position exhibition’s objects, artefacts and images. During the process of designing the space I had few ideas, in order to improve visitors’ sensory experience of the exhibition due to the theme. An example was, instead of creating regular partition walls; to use fabric, framed with metal. With the appropriate lighting and shadows, this method would have created the sensation of souls walking within the different sections of the exhibition, through the ‘gallery’ space. People involved did not care about how the exhibition would look like and wanted to spent the budged in the production of new exhibition boxes and plinths for future purposes of the museum Thus, they went partition walls... Therefore, I produced drawings for positioning new partition walls for exhibition’s purposes. A set of drawings and diagrams to show and explain where and how to position exhibition’s objects, images and so on. In addition, I produced their information bands and panels since they had some miscommunication with their graphic designer. Problem faced, were the lengths of the partition walls because we could not drill on the floor and was impossible for budged limitations to reach the roof. Thus, I created small ‘T‘ shapes where needed. Project, finished within time and budged limits. It could have been better experience and outcome.

Architectural Drawings for STARLAB’s extension building at ‘The Cyprus Institute’

The Cyprus Institute needed to expand STARLAB’s facilities; thus, to proceed for planning new planning permissions and costs approval for a new extension on the existing building. Therefore, I have been asked from to produce the architectural drawings for the extension within a weeks time. Drawings you see below are done in AutoCAD. Since, the client wanted to be within the low budget, extension’s structure was metallic construction (‘I‘ beams etc). Most of the new walls have been created with a partition structure, with glass wool thermal and acoustic insulation panels. Stair case was also a metallic structure as seen on the right. After submission, the architectural drawings you see, were given to construction and quantity surveyors to have a final production cost documention. This extension is now approved and build.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Employment at ‘The Cyprus Institute’

An excellent year at The Cyprus Institute! Worked as part of a creative team, consisted of scientists, architects, urban architects, programmers and researchers. Being part of The Cyprus Institute as a Visual Designer under the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Centre, I had the great chance of working on the precise 3D reconstruction model of the whole City of Nicosia. “RIVEEL 3D” and “Visualizing Paphos Gate”, collaborative projects with the University of Illinois, Nicosia’s Municipality, Department of Antiquities in Cyprus, Wagstaffs Design, and Urban Silence Ltd in London, UK. Thus, after the first stage of the reconstruction of the City, we imported the models in Virtual Environment using an intuitive gesture-based interface, for members of the public to explore these environments, and cultural researchers to utilize the app for further research and education. In addition, these projects’ construction consisted from lighting and texturing from laser scans, photogrammetry methods and techniques. In addition, I worked on the production of architectural drawings for Institution’s library renovation and extension of STARLab’s building. I have also produced the 3D Model replicas of the Heliostat project, for further 3D printing. During my employment period at the CyI, I had also, the chance to participate in Designmorphine Workshop, Dynamic Mutations V.03. Furthermore, I took a secondment from the ‘CyI’ to ‘Exergy Ltd UK’, under a European Commission Project - Horizon 2020, by Marie Skłodowska Curie, Smart Gems Project. There I used Revit for 3D modelling and then VE-IES in order to create thermal and environmental simulations for a housing prototype. Contact terminated due to EU’s budged limitations; after a year I became a licensed/register architect in Cyprus.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Architectural Drawings for Renovation Project

The following project was about a renovation of an old apartment. Under my client’s needs and requests, I have produced the following rearrangement of the apartment. An open living space, kept the old parquet at the sitting area. Simple as possible with the requests of room separation as show and addition of an extra shower in the small rest-room. Project finished and the client is happy. Ready to proceed with the construction. Problems faced and solved have been the pipping system positioning to work with the new intervention without adding new system at the old slab of the apartment.

Architectural Drawings for Renovation and Change ‘Shop’ use to ‘Cafe’ use Project

This project was about a renovation and a transformation of a ‘Shop’ to ‘Cultural Cafe’. Under my client’s needs and requests, I have produced the following arrangement and new use of the existing space. In addition, I have been working along with Nicosia’s department of planning to find solutions for parking needs. According to regulations with the use of different areas of the proposed space and so on, parking spots have been place to the plot number 369 which belongs to the owner of the shop. Project’s documents and architectural drawings (shown on the right) have been submitted already at the planning department of the city for approval. This set of drawings is now approved by both municipal and planning authorities.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Title: ‘CryptoForm Space* (New Design Methodology, 2D-3D)’ *Design Through Visual Perception of 3d Space and Form

This thesis examines the use of computer vision and digital media to generate a new design methodology for architects which conflates perception of found, existing spaces and design through the direct act of ‘painting’ architecture. Based on my research on landscape architecture and technology, I realised that by changing the media, we are changing the way we are designing. The site was an example to experiment with for the potentials of the technology used, while also dealing with landscape characteristics. The project focuses on the perception of the surrounding elements of the environment which are scanned and imported into the virtual world. Contrary to traditional design methods which massively reduce the amount of data considered when imported into any CAD software, high-resolution of scans allow import the physical space as millions of points, retaining information on colours, light, etc. can be collected, experienced and utilised in virtual space. The aim of this project is to allow designers to operate directly inside their site and shift the scale of both site and intervention, using only your hand and mind. Through motion-tracking, the two-dimensional movements of the designers’ hand are captured and directly spatialised in three dimensions, effectively allowing them to ‘paint’ their ideas. Suddenly, painting as artists in 3D world rather as architects in CAD. This process generates sculptural forms that can be further manipulated or sculpted. This result in the creation of architecture which not only works with the site much more closely, but also allows constantly changing scales, move smoothly from 2D to 3D space and between physical and digital domains. Cities and spaces can now be created directly using only hands, mind, personal - sensational approach and found elements from the existing and not.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Title: Architect

Working as an Architect at UHA, I had the opportunity to be part of the team working on the production of Architectural drawings mainly for Skytower Project. Skytower is a residential tower which consists from 23 floors. I has a post-tension structure. Production drawings included Construction Detailing, Grading Plans, Blockwork Drawings and so on. I was working on ‘Skytower’ and ‘Eden Rock’ projects as an architect, mainly learning about their construction process materials, finishes. Bill of Quantities and Initial Tendering Packages, finding JVs of Contractors for ‘Skytower’. Generally, drawing designs - proposing and checking budgets or design changes. Writing reports to keep track of project status and site visiting in checking the building progress. Finally, UHA was a design consultant for a mall size project based in Saudi Arabia - Kingdom of Riyadh. Before, I leave the office, I have gone through the drawing set with the engineer of the office in Cyprus in order to go through material quantities, details and construction costs for the purpose of reporting back to the construction company who hired the office. I have also, design and produce concept drawings for stair’s canopies.
