NUS / Year 4 Semester 2 ongoing Group Work Supervisor: Anna Gasco / gasco@arch.ethz.ch Site: Holland Village, Singapore
The network of intimate streets and programmatic spillover contributes to a seemingly successful ‘backyard’ quality HollandVillage. Similarly, Holland Village is an urban-scale backyard that attracts office workers, students and residents alike to come and unwind during afterhours. However, it is clear that the Old Core of Holland Village has transformed to become increasingly exclusive and gentrified, with the demolition of important identity nodes such as the Buona Vista Swimming Complex and Holland Village Windmill, and the increasing number of expensive boutiques and art galleries. The scheme proposes to turn the rather exclusive backyard into an inclusive one through new housing typologies, green connections, and ‘neutral’ programs such as a sports and wellness complex and open air cinema to attract surrounding residents. Courtyards are also emphasized to encourage programmatic spillover from a main thoroughfare. Given the ongoing nature of this project, only the site analysis and early program proposal have been completed. Overall Movement

HĂœRB is a garden lifestyle store that sells garden furniture produced by local artists and designers who collaborate in situ and produce their prototypes for exhibition, display and commerce. A large piece of landscape that spanned the whole site was lifted up to bridge the on site topography levels, creating a large public space for a furniture park or rooftop exhibition space which people can use freely. Cones were embedded in the landscape to become the unifying element between light, structure and retail spectacle. These spectacles provide the elements for a unique retail experience, as the openings carved out of the cones frame people using the furniture on the landscape that is sold in the shop and workshop activities. People outside can also look inside the cones to see the retail activity. Ramps within the cones transverse all levels as a circulatory promenade.

Designing Resilience in Asia (DRIA) Restricted Competition 2017 Entry / Finalist Group Work Supervisor: Ms. Hwang Yun Hye / akiyhh@u.nus.edu Site: Semarang, Indonesia
The project aims to revitalise the socio-economic situation of the low-income community in Bandarharjo, Semarang through reforming the fish smoking industry and implementing a self sustaining economy collective. The identity of the fish smoking industry is an opportunity for economic vibrancy - done through streamlining the production process through specific routes in the village using a localised transport system “gerobak, and providing the facilities needed to reap economies of scale and a circular economy. New housing typpologies with adaptive ground floors and modular infills, which also integrate rainwater collection systems in the roof to recharge underground water storage are proposed to reconcile land subsidence and flooding on site. Silvofishery farms used to provide fish supply are also planted with mangroves to reduce tidal flood.

FISH INDUSTRY SYSTEMS A centralised cleaning facility for the raw fish is required to minimise water wastage and ensure efficient waste disposal. The proposed cleaning facility typology attempts to streamline goods flow and allow for water recyling. The smoking facilities which currently take place in an unhygeinic state with inefficient flow of goods and raw resources (eg. coconut husk for burning fuel) are cause for concern. A new typology of smoking using pyrolysis is proposed for more maximal use of raw resources, and by - products which can be value - added so more profit is generated from less resources. The roof is also modified such that it collects rainwater for the process. It is ensured that facilities remain affordable and space is maximised.
Proposed Water System
Cleaning Facility Water is required in large quantities to ensure the fish is suitable for smoking. A localised water recycling system is necessary reduce its dependence on external facilities. 20

Totem Ancestor, is a prepared piano piece, composed separately by John Cage to complement a dance piece by Merce Cunningham. The aim of this project is to translate what seems abstract in a music piece into something concrete and physical as architecture. This explorative project is the beginning of a very unique dwelling for a patron art lover. Through meticulous mapping of musical phenomena, referring to the measureable quantities such as pitch variance and dynamic, this project strives to discover the structure in what is seemingly chaos, translating the 2D data into 3D iterations, in this case planes, and finally considering the spaces created by these planes as habitable for living through methodical analysis, ie. plane density and pattern overlap. The proposed building site of this music inspired piece is the entry bridge at Gillman Barracks for its 360 degree viewpoint located within close proximity to an emerging arts gallery and hub.

MAPPING & DISCOVERY
Recording measureable quantities in the music piece such as pitch variance, dynamic, and degree of consonance, then overlaying them to discover patterns. These were then translated into planes. Pitch Variance

The translation could be expressed through intersection, purely planes, volumes or a hybrid of planes and volumes. The patterns in the measureable quantities previously mapped out are visually represented by the form generated and combined, becomes a translation of the music piece.

Houseboats are a common part of the Dutch landscape, such as this one located near Amsterdam. A houseboat is a floating structure that has been designed or modified to primarily function as a home. This houseboat was designed by Hans Kodde & Désirée Stramrood from Kodde architects in 2010, as a private holiday house for two adults and four children. Materials & Modelmaking • Floor, ceiling outer cladding deck: Wooden balsa strips with copic marker, sanded • Furniture, staircases, exposed construction: Balsa wood, spraypainted, sanded • Walls, base, roof: MDF board with primer and few coats of spraypaint • Outer steel beams: Wooden balsa strips and few layers of hammerite paint • Window frames, louvres: Lasercut thin plywood, painted, sanded • Context: MDF layered with sandpaper, painted with sponge
