It is bad enough that this statement may be accurately applied to the lay public, but included in this ignorant group are many of our health care workers and nutritional experts. Sadly, the overall tendency amongst medical consultants, too, is to treat the effects of food and chemical intolerances, rather than manage the cause. The symptoms and diseases that mess up the quality of life may often be dramatically reduced in severity, or even better, cured by managing these delayed food allergies, which commonly cause debilitating ailments. We all eat the same foods day in and day out, and this so-called “high risk eating” pattern leads to the eventual sensitisation of our immune systems to the foods - and the chemicals so often added to food. Once sensitised, the strength of this reaction increases, until the level of inflammation is such that symptoms and diseases then develop. • Headaches and migraines • Arthritis • Weight gain and water retention • Skin diseases that just won’t go • IBS and gut problems • Auto immune diseases • Tiredness, and debilitating emotional issues VIBRANT LIFE PAGE 11

crêpesuzette INGREDIENTS 85g Sugar 1 Orange 1/2 Lemon 60g Butter 30ml Grand marnier (orange fl avoured liqueur) 60ml Cognac (or triple sec) 12 Crêpes METHOD In a heavy based sauce pan, heat the sugar until it melts and begins to caramelize. Cut a couple of strip of rind from the orange and one from the lemon and add this to the pan. Add the butter and the squeezed juices from the orange and lemon to the pan. Stir continuously until all the sugar has dissolved, leave to reduce until syrupy. Add the orange liqueur. Dip each pancake in the sauce to coat them, and then fold it into quarters in the pan. Add the cognac/triple sec and allow to heat for a few seconds before tipping the pan slightly toward the burner fl ame until the alcohol ignites. Give the pan a gentle shake and spoon the sauce over the crêpes until the fl ame dies down. Serve the crêpes warm with a little of the remaining sauce spooned over!

adrenal STRAIN Dr. Duncan Carmichael is an Anti-Aging Doctor who delivers aesthetic medicine (Botox, Fillers, Mesotherapy) combined with health medicine (hormone balancing and food intolerance). He initially worked in Cape Town as a GP with interests in naturopathic medicine. He has since trained in aesthetic procedures in the UK and in Anti-Aging health medicine in Europe.
Adrenal strain is a concept that is well known to natural medicine, but it is only in the last 10 years that conventional medicine has come to understand it. The combined knowledge on it has led to a better understanding of this problem. Essentially, running on stress means that we are in the habit of living on adrenaline. This stress hormone buzzes our system into a state of hyper-efficiency. If this carries on for too long, then it burns us out. Every time adrenaline fires us up, a series of repairer hormones need to follow it and clean up the inflammation and anxiety that the adrenaline causes. Cortisol is the most important of these repairer hormones and at first can be over-stimulated, leading to weight gain. However, later, cortisol burns out, leading surprisingly to further weight gain, but also to energy dips, food cravings, mood dips, and possible sinusitis, hay-fever, asthma, joint and muscle aches, spastic colon, pigmentation and eczema.

Echinacea is a perennial plant which is native to North America and commonly known as the purple coneflower. It is one of the world’s most valuable medicinal Western herbs. Above all, research indicates its importance regarding its stimulatory effect on the immune system, its action thereby raising the body’s ability to counter bacterial and viral infections. Echinacea is predominantly useful for infections of all kinds and is cultivated specifically for therapeutic purposes. INDICATIONS & USES: Echinacea is relied upon mainly as an immune stimulant and is used for all types of infections in the body, most specifically the common cold, flu, respiratory problems and skin disorders. It is especially valuable where upper respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis and laryngitis are concerned. Echinacea is also a beneficial remedy for sinus and nasal catarrhal conditions. The plant is also used as a gargle for sore throats and other throat infections. A decoction can also be made and used as a mouth wash in cases of gingivitis. It is a helpful remedy in the treatment of allergies such as asthma and is applied externally too for some skin conditions. Caution should be exercised for
people with autoimmune diseases where Echinacea should not be used for prolonged periods. PREPARATION & DOSAGE: Tincture: 20 drops 3 times daily. Decoction: 1-2 teaspoons of the root in 1-2 cups of water. Bring to the boil and let it simmer for approximately 15-20 minutes. Strain and drink hot or cold 3 times a day. Use lemon and/or honey to sweeten. Liora Henen has a Bachelors Degree in Psychology & an Honours Degree in Journalism from Rhodes University, as well as a Degree in Phytotherapy (i.e. Herbal Medicine) from the British School of Phytotherapy in East Sussex. She has been running her own health shop, Health Matters, in Sea Point, for just over 11yrs.

CoQ10 Simply put, a coenzyme works with an enzyme to produce a particular reaction. It is involved in the body’s energy cycle. CoQ10 is essential for the production of energy that keeps your body running. It is a powerful antioxidant. CoQ10 is synthesized by the body but is depleted as one ages. CoQ10 rejuvenates brain cells and may help to prevent Parkinsons and Alzheimers disease. It is also used to treat gum disease and for more than three decades it has been used successfully in Japan and by wellinformed USA and European physicians to treat and prevent heart disease. CoQ10 is found in salmon, liver and other organ meats; however one cannot get enough from one’s diet. The Packer Institute at the University of California at Berkley has done and continues doing extensive research on CoQ10 as well as other antioxidants such as Vitamin E.
It is suggested by the Institute that people over forty should be on at least 50mg daily while those with heart disease, who have lower Q10, should be on 100mg daily. Dr Folkers was the first person to isolate CoQ10. Although the technology was sold to the Japanese who now make CoQ10 through a process of fermentation, Dr Folkers continued with his research. He laid the groundwork for numerous studies that showed that CoQ10 is a promising treatment for angina, congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy. Many physicians in the USA have incorporated CoQ10 into their treatment programmes for heart disease.

SCIENTIFIC aromatheraphy The term Aromatherapy was first coined in 1928 by French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé. It means the use of aromatic plants from which essential oils are extracted.
What is an essential oil? An essential oil is a very concentrated liquid extract obtained after steam distillation of an aromatic plant. What is Aromatherapy? Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for the improvement of physical and mental health by strengthening the body’s self-healing function. It is a natural method based on the activity of the biochemical molecules of essential oils. What is Scientific Aromatherapy? Scientific Aromatherapy or Aromatology is the science which studies essential oils and resorts to a rigorous methodology which is based on scientific data confirmed by laboratory. The close connection which links the chemical structure of an essential oil with its activities constitutes the base of aromatology. The quality standards of essential oils must therefore be established according to their impact on the chemical composition. Harvest One of the quality standards of an essential oil is the care taken in harvesting. Method of cultivation The method of cultivation affects the quality of essential oils. Only essential oils distilled from wild plants or organically cultivated plants should be used in aromatherapy. Plant selection Only the healthy plants of the required species must be collected.

Gathering Preferably, the plants must be hand-gathered. This method is more natural and gives essential oils a better quality. Harvest must take place during the vegetative stage when the plant is richest in essence. This stage varies from plant to plant; for example, mint must be collected before flowering, ie before it develops toxic ketones. The quality of an essence varies according to the moment in the day the plant is collected. For example, wild lavender and roses must be picked in the morning after dew while thyme is preferably harvested in the afternoon. Origin Essential oils are like wines! There are great essential oil vintages just as there are great wine vintages! Moreover, the soil where a plant grows largely determines the quality of the essence it produces.

A few weekends ago, with you in mind, I spent the most relaxing time, eating (healthily of course) and drinking some of the most delicious wines South Africa has to offer. Remember that health fundis and dieticians all agree that a couple of glasses of good red wine are beneficial to one’s health. If you want to have three or four, be it on your own head! The Rockwell is tucked away in a leafy enclave just off Somerset Road in Green Point. The Rockwell offers elegantly furnished one or two-bedroomed self-catering suites, with a bed and breakfast option, at competitive rates. There is a stunning pool on the first floor and, soon to be completed, a gym and wellness area. Wi-fi internet access and remote T.V. are standard throughout. Of course, being so close to the city centre you are literally within walking (healthy) distance of all that the City, the Waterkant Village, and the V&A Waterfront have to offer. Clive Musikanth is the helpful and charming manager, ably assisted by his very professional team.
On the ground floor you will be taken by the quality and style which both restaurants, Bouillabaisse and Crêpe Suzette, will tempt you with. Both are very inviting. The charismatic owner Camil Haas has bought his wealth of experience into play, not just in the exciting menus and stunning décor. The whole ambience is delicious. The eclectic/Asian fusion (and more) which Bouillabaisse offers is breathtaking. The most difficult decision you will have to make is when to STOP! The wine lists are as comprehensive as they are excellent, making your visit a truly memorable occasion. In complete contrast, the sister restaurant Crêpe Suzette is, as you have guessed, a Parisian pancake salon but with a twist. The savoury crêpes are equally as tantalising as the sweet, presented in a somewhat different style (the French just can’t help themselves can they?). We were persuaded by Camil to try their specially imported Champagne Cider. Words fail me - just don’t miss it, will you. I promise you that a one night’s stay at The Rockwell may not change your life but it will certainly enrich it.

35% foodgrade HYDROGEN PEROXIDE MIRACLE SUBSTANCE uses & abuses Anti-microbial to anaerobic unicellular pathogens and over time, the reproductive egg stages of multi-cellular parasites, without the relatively high toxicity of chlorine or other disinfectants and their by-products. Neutralises most types of toxic, including pesticide residues, within minutes.
H2O2 is found naturally in very low concentrations in rain and seawater and intracellularly in raw fresh seeds, sprouts, fruits and vegetables. Humans synthesise H2O2 intracellularly, in particular during metabolism and in immune responses against infectious micro-organisms.
Food-grade hydrogen peroxide is stable at 35% (120 vol. – the multiple of oxygen released by any single unit) and is free of the stabilisers, preservatives and contaminants present in the pharmacy supplied 3-12% (10-40 vol.) solutions used as skin antiseptics and hair bleaches. Only food-grade H2O2 is entirely suitable for human oral consumption and at dilutions of 1-5 drops per glass of water (up to 15 drops in polluted water survival emergencies) is safe up to 10 glasses daily and dose-dependent effective as a drinking water and systemic body disinfectant.
At inappropriate concentrations, H2O2 tastes obnoxious and causes nausea, serving as a deterrent. Inappropriate concentrations can cause blistering of the mucosae and oropharyngeal burns. Avoid consumption after eating and especially vitamin C or flaxseed oil supplementation. Suggested uses for 3% strength (50ml in a 500ml hand-pump atomizer of water) include: sterilisation and chemical detoxification of fruit and vegetables, chopping boards, cloths, sponges and kitchen sinks and surfaces. Wait three minutes, before draining (esp. fruit and vet). This strength can be sprayed on the body and rinsed off before or once itching first becomes perceptible. An excellent antiseptic skin damage monitor - all bacterial pockets will prickle and present as whitened effervescence on or under the skin, indicative of oxidative disinfection. Hydrogen peroxide is best combined with Magnesium peroxide (MO3), a powder, which unlike H2O2, is strongly alkaline, has a gentle natural laxative action and liberates 57 volumes of oxygen, which fully dissolves and assimilates, which is not possible in an acidic H2O2 medium.

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its characteristic golden yellow colour, but did you know that it also has a wide range of health benefits? Turmeric comes from the root of the curcuma longa plant and has tough brown skin and deep yellow-orange flesh. It has a peppery, warm and bitter flavour, and a mild fragrance slightly reminiscent of orange and ginger. It has been used in Chinese and Indian medicine for centuries as an anti-inflammatory to treat a wide range of conditions such as flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, bloody urine, haemmorhages, toothaches, bruises, chest pain, and colic.
An excellent source of iron and manganese, it is also rich in vitamin B6, dietary fibre and potassium. The volatile oil in turmeric is a significant anti-inflammatory but something even more potent than this oil is a compound called curcumin. Curcumin, an active component of turmeric, is comparable to strong drugs such as hydrocortisone, as well as over the counter anti-inflammatories, but does not result in toxicity within the body as these drugs do. Curcumin also provides the body with curcuminoids, which are believed to be antioxidant and antibacterial as well as anti-inflammatory.

Arthritis – curcumin is an anti-inflammatory that helps to relieve the aches and pains associated with arthritis. Cardiovascular problems – curcumin can prevent the oxidization of cholesterol in the body and, as oxidized cholesterol damages blood vessels and builds up as plaque that can cause heart attack or stroke, preventing new cholesterol oxidization may minimise the progression of atherosclerosis and heart disease. It also improves circulation by stopping the blood platelets from sticking together. Cancer – turmeric has been shown to help reduce the incidence of skin cancer and help
Safety & Use of Turmeric Use turmeric therapeutically by simply using the powdered spice in your cooking. However, be aware that it should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction, and even though it is often used by pregnant women, it is important to check with a medical professional first as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant. Turmeric has seen a huge rise in popularity since recent clinical studies established that curcumin, the active component of Turmeric, is ten times as effective as an anti-oxidant. Not only is it a powerful antioxidant, it actually increases the way other anti-oxidants work, even those you obtain from your food. Curcumin works in two ways – it scavenges free radicals, thereby reducing the risk of cellular damage and it slows down the neurological ageing process, protects the liver, helps lower LDL cholesterol

and triglycerides (the kind you don’t want) and increases HDL cholesterol (the good form of cholesterol) and aids general wellbeing. It is a powerful, wonderful spice! This amazing yellow spice also appears to help lowers blood glucose levels so is a good adjunct therapy for those with type-2 diabetes. It has also shown promising results in treating those with asthma which is triggered by allergies as it is thought to block the response of immunoglobulin type E (IgE) antibodies, which generate the excessive immune responses characteristic in asthma and other allergic conditions. The most effective way to take this is to use heat and oil to release the active component, therefore cooking with it is extremely effective, say in a stir-fry. Cook turmeric with onions, which are a good source of quercetin, as both quercetin and turmeric have been shown to be beneficial in preventing bowel polyps. The results of a study of five patients with bowel polyps who were given 480mg curcumin plus 20mg quercetin three times daily for six months showed a decrease in the volume of polyps by 60% and in size by 50%. It is thought that turmeric turns off the trigger that encourages cancer cells to grow and spread, although scientists are still trying to determine the pharmacological pathway. Turmeric, then, is an inexpensive and effective way of addressing so many health concerns and providing so many health-enhancing benefits – it makes sense to make it a part of as many meals as you can.

To obtain a first quality essential oil, the following criteria must be observed: Alambic The alambic is ideally made of stainless steel, the most inert material, as copper and iron can form oxides. Low-pressure The distillation must be conducted under very low pressure, between 0,05 and 0,10 Bar, as over-oxidation is possible at high pressure. For example, the colour of essential oil of flowered thymus vulgaris varies from pale red to red-brown by increasing the pressure. The pyrogénation of woods with barks, resulting from a steam distillation at high pressure and high temperature, produces essential oils soiled with carcinogenic tar. Completed distillation The duration of the whole distillation is of great importance. Long and prolonged, it will allow collecting the “totum” of the aromatic molecules, ie base and topping notes of the essential oils. For example: ¾ of the essential oil of thymus vulgaris is extracted during the initial thirtyfirst minutes, but sixty to eighty additional minutes are required to extract the phenols. The producers are paid by kilogram of essential oil. That is the reason why many producers distill under high pressure and stop the distillation after the 25 to 30 profitable minutes. Those essential oils are frequently rectified, ie re-distilled to cleanse the oils of undesirable components and to concentrate

the most volatile molecules. This process produces faded essential oils with a less fine aroma and more side-effects. why i created AllisOne TISSUESALTS I have used tissue salts on a daily basis since 1993 – and advised others on their use since 1995. In the early days I thought all tissue salts were equal, and that it did not matter which ones you used as long as you compensated for the size of the tablets if you used smaller ones.
My work involves more than just the mineral replacement aspect of tissue salts; the repair of the bio-energetic field has been something I monitor as clients are assessed at their visits. As the years passed, various new stressors emerged, most notable being the increased exposure to electromagnetic smog of technology – wireless systems and mobile phones for example.
