Holle sets the global standard in organic baby nutrition Swiss baby foods company Holle sets impeccable standards of manufacturing integrity and ingredient quality, producing organic infant formulas and foods of the highest standard. Holle CEO Udo Fischer explains the company’s philosophy.
In 1933 the Holle company was established on the Swiss-German border as a manufacturer of organic baby foods. Since the beginning all chemical and production preservatives have been removed without compromise. Quality control is the most important aspect of our business. We make sure we get the very best raw ingredients by working in partnership with farmers in the field rather than sourcing from the anonymous world market. We strongly believe that biodynamically-grown ingredients provide the best foundation for premium quality baby foods. Secondly, we do a lot of analysis before, during and after production. Depending on the product, 300 to 600 parameters are tested, including tests for pesticides, residues such as heavy metals, all sorts of microbiological factors and vitamin content - just to name a few. The grains in our porridges are grown in rich, pesticide- free and herbicide- free soils that have been nourished and prepared organically. We only choose carefully-selected Demeter-certified grains from organic farmers with whom we have had a close working relationship for many years.
VIBRANT LIFE PAGE 06
The full cream milk used in our infant formulas comes from the Southern German Alps and from Austria. The ingredients used in our baby food range come from biodynamic or organic agriculture. This means: • A natural cycle of cultivation without exploiting animals, soil or the environment • Quality not quantity • Variety instead of monoculture • Animals kept in their natural environment • Use of animal hormones and growth regulators is totally rejected • Natural compost instead of artificial fertilisers • All chemical plant and insect protection agents are rejected • No chemical additives during processing/ treatment • No ingredients made from genetically modified sources, 100% guaranteed • No added sugar • No added table salt • No added aromas, colours or preservatives

Every single step of our production process is regulated, documented and independently audited to the highest Swiss and EU standards. glyconutrients 90 capsules R170 180 capsules R285 Glyconutrients are plant carbohydrates (monosaccharides). There are over 200 carbohydrates (or sugars) but only 8 are essential for bodily function. These are xylose, fucose, galactose, glucose, mannose, N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylneuraminicare (a sialic acid). Glyconutrients are described as the key to proper cellular communication and proper cell function. Supplementation with Glyconutrients could prevent disease and increase the body’s ability to heal, repair, regenerate and protect itself. Glyconutrients in combination with adequate amount of other key essential nutrients can accelerate healing, improve immune function, slow down aging, improve memory, lower anxiety. Some of the examples of the exciting possibilities of Glyconutrients are:
• Dramatically raising natural killer cells and macrophage count against infectious organisms. • Activating immune T-cell activity only when invaders or antigens are present. • Decreasing cell death in chronic fatigue syndrome. • Dramatically elevating disease resistance in weakened individuals. • Acting as antioxidant compounds. • Protecting the body against toxin and pollutant exposure. • Slowing premature aging. • Decreasing inflammation in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. • Helping immune cells recognize invaders due to mutual “sugar exchange” of information. Hairs on cells used for communication are made from glyco-proteins. Contact Paul 0823932888

villazest
I recently discovered, through the recommendation of a friend, a stunning, brand new boutique hotel in Green Point called Villa Zest. I called in on the off chance and was met by the General Manager Desire Avis, a charming and extremely helpful young lady and (dare I say it) full of zest about the stylish sanctuary secreted away just off Main Road. The suites are an absolute delight, blending classic retro with all the modern conveniences we expect. The elegant Zen garden with pool and Tuareg-type shaded area are relaxing and extremely well-appointed, perfect for that well deserved relaxing weekend away. This coupled with the fact that breakfast goes on until midday makes this a place where you’ll want to stay a little longer. Above all this, the ambience, service and feelgood factor add up to an experience of complete satisfaction. You can contact the Villa Zest on 021 433 1246 or info@villazest.co.za, and check out the website too on www.villazest.co.za. Article by Tony Ward (0823932888) www.livinglavida.co.za

imagine that every person in the world is enlightened but you – they are all your teachers, each doing just the right things to help you learn patience, perfect wisdom, perfect compassion
in life, pain and suffering are two distinctly different things. It is possible to experience pain but not suffer from it. Suffering is due to resisting the pain. If one is willing to surrender to it, accept it, and completely stop resisting it - the suffering and even frequently the pain itself will cease
Thus seemingly catastrophic events may be essential and necessary elements for the evolution of the soul. Karma merely refers to the fact that the soul is accountable for its decisions.
life’s greatest difficulties are actually life’s biggest blessings
there are no coincidences – the world is a giant radar, detecting our growth needs and then sending us the corresponding people and events for the promotion of this growth. The people in our lives are mirrors – reflecting the brightest as well as the darkest parts of ourselves

for up to 5 days in the fridge. Marinate the tofu for at least one hour in a sealed container in the fridge. 75g Firm tofu 80ml Apple Cider Vinegar 100ml Kikkoman Soya Sauce 25ml Kikkoman Tamari Sauce 40ml Filtered Water ½ Tblsp Sunflower Oil
Peanut Sauce

This sauce has an Asian flavour; it will keep in your fridge for up to a week. 1 clove Garlic Fresh , minced 1 cm Ginger Fresh, peeled and minced ½ cup Smooth Peanut Butter 60ml Lemon Juice 1 ½ Tblsp Kikkoman Tamari Sauce ½ Tblsp Paprika ½ cup Filter Water ½ Tblsp Vegetable Stock Cayenne Pepper to Taste 1 Combine all the ingredients and blend together in a blender or food processor. 2 Be careful when you heat it as peanut butter burns easily. 3 Heat over a low heat in a small pot or pan for 5 minutes, and serve hot. 4 If the sauce is too thick or separates, simply whisk in some more water until you reach the consistency that you like.

Zen and the art of shampoo blending The interesting thing to remember about shampoos is that regardless of price they are all made of the same basic stuff. That fancy bottle the hairstylist tries to sell you is made up of water, surfactant (bubbles) and then some colour, perfume and preservative – just like the family size in the supermarket, the only major difference being in the price. There are of course subtle tweaks that give each product its own character, but it’s just like the fashion trade; jeans are made from cotton, but if they come from Armani they cost a fortune; if they come from Mr Price they don’t. Using an expensive shampoo is not going to give anyone better hair; for that you should have picked parents with better hair, but it can improve the state of the scalp, especially with young children or those prone to sensitivity or flaking. To be honest, the cheapest and nastiest of all shampoos are usually used at the backwash basins at most salons. Ironic really that the stylist spends the next hour telling you not to use that junk off the commercial shelves when they’ve just used something more suitable to scrubbing down the patio. A Californian company called Redken were the first to introduce science to the world of hair care; they had a vested interest mind you, as it was they who started the trend of professional products, exclusively sold through salons. A consummate showman called Ken England was flown out for a two-day seminar, and spoke of P.H. values, amino acids and hydrolyzed proteins to an eager audience of stylists, who had previously reached for the Wella Kolestral and Pantene Vitamin Hair Tonic when the going got tough. Those were solid products by the way, and should still be on the shelves today if the marketing men didn’t get in the way of common sense. The world of hair and beauty was, and always is, an evolving process; we went from egg, to wheat germ oil and honey, to protein and now silicones. After 30 years in the business I know one thing for certain; the very best hair gets washed once or twice a week with very ordinary shampoo. VIBRANT LIFE PAGE 14

whatismetabolicbalance? Metabolic Balance is an individualized metabolism management programme that has been developed by a team of physicians and nutritional scientists. With the aid of this programme, you can re-adjust your current eating habits and follow a diet profile, which is healthy, completely balanced and custom-tailored to you. The individualized nutritional plan is based on your current blood data and personal history. The programme can help you to: •Resolve your weight problems in a healthy and fast way •Achieve steady weight loss without plateau •Maintain the weight loss while living a normal lifestyle •Improve chronic metabolic conditions and general health The specific nutritional plan helps to balance your personal “body chemistry” with the “food chemistry” suitable for you individually. Through healthy, conscious eating, you can supply your body with nutrients and minerals required for a proper auto-regulation of the metabolism. MB works quickly, and usually there is no plateau observed. There is no need to be hungry or suffer cravings. We don’t sell pills, powders or food items. You buy the food items on your list at your grocery store. Food is selected based on the effect of those foods on your hormonal balance. Therefore you promote a healthy metabolism and natural insulin release. With the help of new, simple rules for preparing food and new eating habits you can achieve and maintain your goal weight while strengthening your entire hormonal balance.

Dr. Duncan Carmichael is an Anti-Aging Doctor who delivers aesthetic medicine (Botox, Fillers, Mesotherapy) combined with health medicine (hormone balancing and food intolerance). He initially worked in Cape Town as a GP with interests in naturopathic medicine. He has since trained in aesthetic procedures in the UK and in Anti-Aging health medicine in Europe.
The thyroid gland is a little gland in our necks that does a whole lo ad of work. It warms up the body and speeds our metabolism up. We may get sent for a TSH test every so often by our GP just to make sure it is working well, but we often don’t otherwise give it a second thought. However, without it we are at risk of heart attacks, stroke and cancer. It is a very under-rated cause of depression and I have seen it tear marriages apart. What we are starting to understand is that even if it is slightly underactive, it may leave us tired, grumpy, puffy and sluggish in thought. It is becoming apparent that it is important to treat even slightly underactive thyroids if we want a chance at optimal health. We don’t necessarily all need to be treated with conventional tablets, but we do need to be proactive. After the age of 40, all of us should be very aware of our thyroid gland becoming sluggish. What are the signs? The most reliable are: not being able to wake up in the morning! Remember the thyroid wakes and warms our system up, so if it is not working then we use other things to do just that. If you need a long hot shower, exercise or a strong coffee to wake you up after having had a good sleep, then it probably means your thyroid is not doing its job properly.
During this early morning time, if you feel you get morning face (puffy eyes that improve later) that might be another sign that your thyroid is just not playing nicely any more. If, in addition, your skin feels dry and thickened, your heels are cracked and the outside bits of your eyebrows just won’t grow, then you should be quite suspicious as to the laziness of your thyroid. If you need more evidence then do a mid-day temperature test. Put a digital thermometer under your tongue for 30 seconds to warm it up and then switch it on. Our temperature should be kept to 37C by a healthy thyroid gland. If it is consistently running at 36C then there is probably a thyroid problem. Lastly, remember that the thyroid gland does not work alone. So if you are being treated for thyroid and you still feel awful, it may be because your adrenals or your estrogen is being ignored.

blackcohosh Liora Henen of Health Matters
blackcohosh
COMMON NAME Black Cohosh LATIN NAME Cimicifuga racemosa PART USED The root CONSTITUENTS Cimicifugin and Racemosin INTRODUCTION Black Cohosh is a native
of North America and grows freely in shady woody areas in Canada and the United States. It is a hardy plant and a member of the buttercup family, with white blossoms and a distinctive black root. It was most commonly used by the Native American tribes to treat rheumatism, kidney complications and gynaecological problems.
KEY ACTIONS • Astringent • Emmenagogue • Diuretic • Alterative • Anti-spasmodic INDICATIONS & USES: Classified as an emmenagogue, Black Cohosh tones the womb and reproductive organs, potentially bringing on a period or even triggering labour. It is a herb which also contains oestrogenic properties and is thus particularly useful for conditions of oestrogen deficiency and therefore suitably recommended for women where low oestrogen levels are diagnosed. It is an excellent remedy for any menstrual and menopausal complaints and/or irregularities. Owing to its anti-spasmodic and slightly sedative qualities, it is naturally also a useful herb for PMT, pains, bloating, tension and any other accompanying emotional symptoms. It’s alterative attributes are able too to help with skin problems, spots or acne that occur during one’s menstrual cycle.
Black Cohosh is also an effective remedy for muscular pains and cramps. Being an antiinflammatory herb, it is used furthermore to treat rheumatism, helping to reduce any related swelling or pain. It is also extremely effective as a muscle relaxant. Caution should definitely be exercised when pregnant eventhough, under supervision, Black Cohosh is sometimes combined with Raspberry Leaf for use during labour and birth. PREPARATION & DOSAGE: Tincture: 10-30 drops 3 times daily. Decoction: 1-2 teaspoons of the root in 1-2 cups of water. Bring to the boil and let it simmer for approximately 15-20 minutes. Strain and drink hot or cold 3 times a day. Use lemon and/or honey to sweeten.
Liora Henen has a Bachelors Degree in Psychology & an Honours Degree in Journalism from Rhodes University, as well as a Degree in Phytotherapy (i.e. Herbal Medicine) from the British School of Phytotherapy in East Sussex. She has been running her own health shop, Health Matters, in Sea Point, for just over 11yrs. VIBRANT LIFE PAGE 19
Essential Fatty Acids BY Ellis Henen Pharmacist
It is believed that monounsaturated oleic acid (Omega 9) lowers the risk of heart attack and arteriosclerosis. also contains Omega 6 and Omega 9 essential fatty acids. Linolenic acid is converted to gamma linolenic (GLA). So GLA on a label indicates Omega 6 fatty acids. Omega 6 is often used in rheumatoid arthritis, PMS, and skin disorders such as eczema. A common name for Omega 6 is Evening Primrose Oil. It is believed that monounsaturated oleic acid (Omega 9) lowers the risk of heart attack and arteriosclerosis. Source: Found in olive oil (extra virgin or virgin), olives, avocados, almonds, peanuts, hazel and cashew nuts.
British research shows that even toddlers whose communication skills were well below average could catch up in just months by taking fatty acids often found in fish and seeds. A study by the Discovery Centre in Cardiff Wales, which receives government funding to support people with learning difficulties, has revealed that children may be failing to get essential fatty acids because of junk food diets. Founder Dr Amanda Kirby believes that distributing supplements of Omega 3 fish oil and multivitamins to school children may be necessary. Source: One obtains Omega 3 from fish oils such as salmon and other cold water fish. Also from flaxseed oil which has the highest linolenic content of any food. Flaxseed Oil

whatisreiki
You don’t need to be a therapist to use Reiki. Most people use it on themselves, family and friends, even plants and animals. It can promote a better quality to life and greater harmony with the environment. Some practitioners of Reiki see it as a form of art.
Reiki is an ancient method of natural healing originating from the Far East. This technique was named after the founder, Mikao Usui, a Japanese theologist. He rediscovered this art of healing in the mid 1800s through years of studying history and medical books, both Buddhist and Christian scriptures, psychology, Taoism and even the art of divination. Following a prolonged period of meditation, Mikao Usui acquired this ability of transferring Universal Life Energy, which he called Reiki (Usui Ryoho Reiki = Usui’s natural method of healing with Universal energy). He then committed to teaching others how to act as channels for this energy. Reiki is not a religion or doctrine, but more of a philosophy, a way of living. When a person undergoes a session of Reiki, he or she allows the energy to be taken with beneficial effects. This puts the recipient and not the practitioner in an empowering position. Those who use Reiki regularly often find that they are more joyful and lively, and their inbuilt energy is enhanced. It is almost as if their batteries have been fully charged! There are many energy healing modalities and this can be confusing to the lay person. Reiki is a simple and uncomplicated technique, requiring only your intuition, which obviates the need for props. In order for technique to “qualify” as Reiki, it needs to consist of 5 elements:• Five daily principles • Breathing techniques• Symbols with mantras • Initiation/attunement • Palm healing VIBRANT LIFE PAGE 21
Heiné de Waal received his Master’s Initiation (Shiki Ryoho) in 1998. Additional initiations were later received into Karuna Reiki and traditional Japanese Reiki (Ryoho). Heiné can be contacted for treatments and tuition at 072 293 9478 or solaris@mweb.co.za The Reiki Treatment Deep relaxation is central to a Reiki session. The extent to which Reiki can work is defined by the receiver of the energy, because only the necessary amount of energy is absorbed. If the receiver is not accepting of the energy or feels negative about it, then its effectiveness will be reduced. How do I learn Reiki? One does not need any previous experience to become a Reiki practitioner; however, you would require an attunement or initiation. This attunement (Reiju = blessing) can be done only by a Reiki Master (Teacher). The student should also have an open heart, the desire to receive the Reiki transmission and carry the intention to use it. Through the process of attunements, energy will automatically start flowing. The more you work with the energy, the stronger the flow of Reiki will become. There are four degrees of Reiki. Reiki I is primarily for self-healing and hands-on healing to others. The next level of Reiki focuses on emotional-, mentaland karmic healing. In this second degree the student is introduced to symbols and how to work with them. Healing with Reiki II adds considerable power to direct sessions. It also adds methods and tools for performing healing on a person or animal not physically present. This is referred to as distance healing. The third degree of Reiki is an advanced level of this technique. It involves higher spiritual energy and achieves more spiritual healing. Reiki III is recommended especially to those who wish to make Reiki a major part of their lives. The last level is the Master level. A Reiki Master is simply a teacher of Reiki and one who has mastered the discipline. No ego or ownership should be involved in this title.
Açaí: the Amazon Superfruit The Açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) palm
tree flourishes in the lush forests of Brazil and its deep purple berries are one of Nature’s richest sources of anti-oxidants. Açaí also contains amino acids, Omega 6 and 9 fats and is a good source of dietary fibre. That’s why it’s known as a Superfruit. Açaí berries have been used for centuries by indigenous people of the Amazon region for increased energy, strength and stamina. Absolute Organix Açaí Powder is wild-grown in the Amazon rainforest. It’s a wholefood, not an extract. Add a teaspoon to smoothies or fruit juice and enjoy the rich, berry flavour. Absolute Organix Açaí powder is sold at leading health stores and pharmacies. ADVERTORIAL H.E.S. TRACE MINERALS
TRACE MINERALS: NATURAL BALANCE, PERFECT SOLUTION Dr. Alexis Carrel, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1912, stated: “Soil is the basis of all human life and our only hope for a healthy world.... All of life will be either healthy or unhealthy according to the fertility of the soil. Minerals in the soil control the metabolism of cells in plant, animal and man....* Diseases are created chiefly by destroying the harmony reigning among mineral substances present in infinitesimal amounts in air, water and food, but most importantly in the soil.” * Even the American Medical Association recognizes the importance of minerals in our diet. “Variations in the distribution of certain minerals in the environment are known to have an effect on health.” Keeping minerals in proper balance throughout the body while providing all of them in sufficient quantities needed for optimal health is complex. This is further complicated when using a bullet approach based on the latest research that finds specific deficiencies and then supplements the diet with just that particular nutrient: The complexity of the mineral imbalance problem is apparent. It is apparent that our understanding of the mechanisms of mineral imbalances is fragmentary. New interrelationships are constantly being discovered. We are presently recognizing and correcting only a small fraction of the mineral imbalance problems plaguing animals and man. Imbalanced interactions cause many problems when we consistently consume single processed or refined minerals that are out of proportion with the other minerals and trace minerals. This is particularly evident when it comes to the most commonly refined mineral that South Africans take into their diet, sodium chloride (table salt), with its effects on hypertension.
Clearly, nutrients function interactively both in the body and in their impact on blood pressure regulation. Whenever the consumption of a single nutrient is significantly altered, an entirely new dietary pattern is created. Nutrients occur in clusters in the diet and may therefore act synergistically to alter physiologic variables such as blood pressure. These relationships can, however, have an equally profound benefit on human health when minerals are consumed in proper ratios. Certain minerals and trace elements, when found in proper balance, can serve additional non-classical roles such as acting as antioxidants. Minerals and trace elements can also help each other in the process of assimilation and add additional safety buffers for minerals that have the potential of being toxic to human health. Within the blood stream, lymphatic fluid, cells and extracellular fluid, minerals and trace elements can be found completely dissociated into solution , which can also be called electrolyte or ionic form. In this state, they all have

specific positive or negative electrical signatures that cause a dynamic equilibrium to take place. The body can use minor changes in this equilibrium to create proper osmotic pressure and move nutrients to the areas that need them most and create electrical impulses that run the entire nervous system. This same equilibrium can also be found in the seas around the world where minerals and trace minerals have collected and concentrated in liquid ionic form for millions of years. It is astounding to realize that the dynamic equilibrium that takes place with liquid ionic minerals and trace elements has created the same basic balance in sea water that is found in healthy blood plasma and lymphatic fluid. Utah’s Great Salt Lake, where Mineral Resources International harvest Low Sodium ConcenTrace® Ionic Trace Mineral Drops, is ten times more concentrated than sea water, and the largest body of concentrated sea water in the world, and is particularly rich in certain minerals and trace minerals like magnesium, selenium, lithium, and boron which are vitally important to human health. “The Great Salt Lake [has] concentrated many of the same minerals found in the sea through geothermal and evaporative processes. These natural sources of the elements can provide a rich source of minerals compatible to human physiological needs.” 1 “Because of its high concentration, the dynamic equilibrium has caused the Great Salt Lake to be uniquely low in certain toxic, heavy metals: ... The total soluble concentrations of heavy metals in the water are extremely low. The heavy metals in the lake, along with clays, organic materials and carbonates, are precipitating to the sediments and deep brines where anaerobic conditions and sulfide formed by sulfate reducing bacteria immobilize the metals. The lake thus avoids ac-
VIBRANT LIFE PAGE 27
cumulation of heavy metals and is nontoxic and self-cleansing.” Like Your Body, It Only Lights Up with “Ionic” Trace Minerals Every second of every day your body relies on ionic minerals and trace minerals to conduct and generate billions of tiny electrical impulses. Without these impulses, not a single muscle, including your heart, would be able to function. Your brain would not function and the cells would not be able to use osmosis to balance water pressure and absorb nutrients. In fact, “many vital body processes depend on the movement of ions across cell membranes. Recent research indicates that minerals may play a significant role against a variety of degenerative diseases and processes.* They may also prevent and reduce injury from environmental pollutants and enhance the ability to work and learn. They can also protect the body from the effects of toxic minerals.

One of the main reasons that diets fail is because people approach weight loss the wrong way. Our thoughts can often be our biggest enemy. The good news is that self-destructive thinking can be changed!
beatingmentalobstacles tohealthyliving Here are a few tips to beat the mental obstacles: • Set small, realistic goals instead of big, sweeping ones. If you go into every situation without thinking ‘it’s all-or-nothing’, you’re much more likely to moderate what you eat. Start thinking about the hundreds and hundreds of mini-decisions we make in a day (like eating only half of a muffin instead of a whole one or adding a few short, quick walks whenever you can). • Another mental obstacle is giving up on ourselves. Make a commitment to yourself to create a healthier lifestyle. Write down all the reasons you want the change and put the list somewhere where it can remind you on days when you feel discouraged. • Be accountable. Whether you have a weight loss buddy, a support group, or a food diary, keeping track of your daily food choices takes only a few minutes, but can double your weightloss success.
If you develop a healthy way to approach weight loss, both mentally and physically, you will ultimately find success. These small changes above can quickly add up to more kilograms lost and a greater sense of control.
•Acknowledge your successes. People who believe they can succeed with weight loss actually do lose weight more successfully. How do you gain this confidence? Take a moment to pat yourself on the back when you make healthy choices and achieve your short-term goals. Write your successes in your journal. •Go smaller. Research shows that the bigger the plate, bag, or container of food, the bigger your eyes -- and it appears that the eyes have more control over how much you eat than your stomach! • Get help! A good hypnotherapist or cognitive behaviour therapist can make a huge difference in overcoming negative thought patterns.

How
Alpha-Stim® Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) Works The exact mechanism by which Alpha-Stim produces effects is not fully known. However, based on previous and ongoing studies, it appears that the Alpha-Stim microcurrent waveform activates particular groups of nerve cells that are located at the brainstem. These groups of nerve cells produce the chemicals serotonin and acetylcholine which can affect the chemical activity of nerve cells that are both nearby and at more distant sites in the nervous system. In fact, these cells are situated to control the activity of nerve pathways that run up into the brain and that course down into the spinal cord. By changing the electrical and chemical activity of certain nerve cells in the brainstem, AlphaStim appears to amplify activity in some neurological systems, and diminish activity in others. This neurological ‘fine tuning’ is called modulation, and occurs either as a result of, or together with the production of a certain type of electrical activity pattern in the brain known as an alpha state which can be measured on brain wave recordings (called electroen-
cephalograms, abbreviated EEG). Such alpha rhythms are accompanied by feelings of calmness, relaxation and increased mental focus. The neurological mechanisms that are occurring during the alpha state appear to decrease stresseffects, reduce agitation and stabilize mood, and regulate both sensations and perceptions of particular types of pain. These effects can be produced after a single treatment, and repeated treatments have been shown to increase the relative strength and duration of these effects. In some cases, effects have been stable and permanent, suggesting that the electrical and chemical changes evoked by Alpha-Stim have led to a durable re-tuning back to normal function. Electromedical Products International, Inc. is dedicated to continued research into the mechanisms and effects through which Alpha-Stim can be beneficial to patients with pain, anxiety, depression and sleep disorders. Alpha-Stim CES engages the serotonergic (5-HT) raphe nuclei of the brainstem. 5-HT inhibits brainstem cholinergic (ACh) and noradrenergic (NE) systems that project supratentorially. This suppresses thalamo-cortical activity, arousal, agitation, alters sensory processing and induces EEG alpha rhythm. As well, 5-HT can act directly to modulate pain sensation in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, and alter pain perception, cognition and emotionality within the limbic forebrain. Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) Useful as a metabolic indicator! Hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) is commonly recognized as a nutritional and heavy metal screening test; however, its usefulness extends far beyond this initial utility. Hair analysis can also be a reflection of metabolic activity. Most adverse health conditions have an underlying metabolic disturbance involving the neuro-endocrine system that conversely contributes to nutritional imbalances. An example of this is Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and endocrine disturbances of sugar metabolism. The physiology and pathology of DM is complex and poorly understood. DM is related to an underlying neuro-endocrine imbalance rather than simply a poor diet. These neuro-endocrine imbalances lead to nutritional imbalances that eventually affect glucose and insulin control. Although diet is important, unless the underlying imbalance is addressed it will be difficult to control blood sugar and insulin levels. Other conditions that can be picked up and addressed through HTMA are the causes of obesity (in relation to metabolism), insulin and syndrome X , thyroid conditions, the health of the skeletal system and conditions related to stress and the adrenal glands, to name but a few. The beauty of HTMA is that YOUR UNIQUE metabolism will be discovered and you will be given the tools you need to get to and maintain your perfect health.

anearlychristmansstory It was early summer in the small Eastern Cape village. Sinalo, aged 10, had been looking forward to his school holidays and to the visit later that month of his mother who lived in the big city. Like so many of his fellow villagers Sinalo lived with his grandmother while his mother worked away from home to support the small family. Her annual visit, which would coincide with the Christmas season, meant that Sinalo would receive new clothes or new shoes or whatever his mother could afford to bring him. But the summer of 2008 was to bring not only the visit of his mother but also an illness which would change Sinalo’s life forever. It started with a fever and an unbearable headache; small Sinalo was struck down with TB meningitis and fell seriously ill. It was a Friday and Sinalo’s grandmother knew that the local doctor would not be available until Monday. Sinalo’s condition worsened and he was admitted to hospital. Later that week his anxious mother left the city to rush to her son’s bedside. She found her son disoriented, confused even, and very ill. But in time he seemed to respond to his mother’s presence and slowly his condition improved; he was finally able to leave hospital and accompany his mother to Cape Town. Still weak and disoriented, Sinalo nevertheless made good progress under the loving care of his mother, Khalipha. However, as a result of the illness he had become profoundly deaf. But this is a story about hope and faith. Khalipha was fortunate to be guided into the healing hands of Tygerberg Hospital where Sinalo VIBRANT LIFE PAGE 34
was examined and tested - and where it was established that he would need a cochlear implant if he was ever to hear again. The device is designed to stimulate the hearing nerve in the inner ear and provides hearing to severely and profoundly deaf individuals who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids. The cochlear implant may be likened to a very powerful miniature computer. For this reason, it is very costly. So costly, in fact, that it is beyond the means of the average South African. It was certainly beyond the means of Khalipha and her family. She initially feared that she would never find the money to cover the cost of restoring her son’s hearing and that he would never hear again. Usually, patients must raise the necessary funds before the implantation surgery is carried out. But Khalipha and her son were in luck. The scans showed that due to ossification of the inner ears due to the illness, the left ear was no longer suitable for implantation. The right
VIBRANT LIFE PAGE 35
ear had partial ossification. Surgery would need to be performed as a matter of urgency if Sinalo was ever to hear again. The Tygerberg Hospital team sprang into action. A theatre was made available outside of normal operating hours, the theatre staff gave their services outside of their normal working hours, and one of the team’s private surgeons agreed to assist with the surgery without charge. The medical superintendents of Tygerberg Hospital made it possible for young Sinalo to receive a cochlear implant through hospital funding. Sinalo’s operation occurred in July this year, and all indications are that it was successful. Once again he is able to hear speech and other sounds in his environment. He attends school at Dominican Grimley School in Hout Bay where is making good progress. Now his mother must try to raise funds for use by Tygerberg Hospital for cochlear implants in other patients in the future. The target is R50 000. This seems like an impossible task for Khalipha, who is all too aware that Sinalo’s illness could have claimed her son’s life, but given the
miracle of Sinalo’s recovery and the restoration of his hearing it is a task to which Khalipha is wholeheartedly dedicated. She carries with her a letter from the Cochlear Implant Unit at Tygerberg Hospital which sets out the conditions under which she may do so. All donations go to the Cochlear Implant Unit at Stellenbosch University, and any excess funds will remain with the Unit and be applied towards the cost of implants for other patients. South Africans often complain about the lack of “service delivery” and of the state of the public health system, but here is a shining example of the good work of which South Africans are capable. As a result of the help which he received from the doctors, the audiologists and the staff at Tygerberg Hospital, Sinalo can now dare to look forward to the summer and to care-free holidays. If you would like to support Sinalo’s cause please make your donation to University of Stellenbosch, Standard Bank account number 073006955 (code 050610), and refer to “Cochlear Implant Unit: Project Sinalo Ngolozana”. All donations will be gratefully received. Enquiries: Mrs Joan Weyers, Stellenbosch Foundation, Private Bag X1, Matieland 7602. Fax 021 808 3026. Tel 021 808 3893.

HEART AND SOUL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY Alexander van Berge
Do you, like me, wonder at our extraordinary ability to take things for granted? For example, living in the Western Cape, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful locations and within such easy reach of so many places for that all-important getaway, if only for a day! Yet, how many of us take all this for granted! We chose a particularly sunny and warm day a couple of weeks back to head out with some friends on the west coast road towards Darling to visit one of the oldest wine estates in the area, Groote Post, which was established in 1706. The buildings are a delight and full of the olde world charm one has come to expect from the Cape’s farms. The extensive range of wines produced at Groote Post is impressive and well-balanced and good on the palate. I was particularly impressed with their ‘ newby”, the Weisser Riesling, just off-dry with a particularly good nose and a crisp and fruity taste. I must, of course, mention the Old Man’s Blends, both red and white, which I am sure you all know and have sampled on the odd occasion.why?? These wines are the creation of the current owner Peter Pentz. No fool that man! The current wine maker, Lukas Wentzl, is to my mind an absolute master. In particular, the Pinot Noir 2007 is worth ‘investing in’ for those special occasions when you feel the need to spoil yourself. The Maiden is this part of the name?? Noble Late Harvest is a superb dessert wine, for the perfect end to one of your superb home-cooked suppers! dinners??? I must say, however, that we were disappointed with the restaurant on the wine estate, Hilda’s Kitchen. The limited menu and indifferent service made it instantly forgettable, I am sorry to report.
Not to be deterred, we left the Darling area and headed back to Cape Town, for ‘tea’ at Bouillabaisse/Crepe Suzette in Green Point. ‘Tea’ consisted of Crepe Suzettes all round, accompanied by champagne cocktails! So much more civilised than coffee and cake, don’t you think? Also visited on our travels this last month was Chenin in the Cape Quarter. It used to be The Nose wine bar. Cathy and her hubby have gone on to pastures new, and we thought they would be a hard act to follow. Not so... the new owners, Craig and Nicole, have made a couple of decor changes, for the better, and introduced a set menu, which presents great value, as well as al a carte. For example, two homemade tasty burgers with spicy wedges and a glass of wine cost R60 per person. Nice one, and may they go from strength to strength. Also they have educational wine courses available over a six-week period during the winter/spring months. Go on, force yourself out of the house; it’s going to be worth the effort. You can call Chenin on 021 425 2200. If you need any further information or advice with anything to do with getting around in the Cape, please feel free to call me on 0823932288 or go to my website www.livinglavidasa.co.za

Lutein and other carotenoids may reduce the risks for cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Studies have shown that supplementation of lutein esters leads to an increased concentration of lutein in the eye, which may help maintain healthy vision. AMD affects the central part of the retina called the macula, which controls fine vision, leaving sufferers with only limited sight. AMD affects over 30 million people worldwide, and is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50.
Previous studies have reported a link between AMD and lutein and zeaxanthin, found in leafy green vegetables, corn, egg yolks, squash, broccoli and peas. The carotenoids proposedly reduce the risk of AMD by absorbing blue light that could damage the macula, preventing free radicals from damaging eye cells and strengthening eye cell membranes. A recent study indicates that Cognis’ Xangold lutein and zeaxanthin supplement (12 mg lutein for six months) is effective at boosting eye health among those with early-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The result of years of extensive research, Eroxil™ works with the body’s own natural processes to help rejuvenate the entire sexual reproductive system – sperm production, libido, performance. And without the side effects normally associated with drugs. Eroxil™ should be taken on a regular basis, one tablet a day. Most men will notice a visible difference within just a few days. But because Eroxil™ works within the 90 day sperm production cycle to regenerate cell growth, others may require several weeks to achieve their goals. Once the desired level of performance is attained, only a maintenance dose is necessary. 75% of customers have excellent results in a few days, a week or a few weeks. The actual rejuvenation time of the sexual reproductive system is 90 days for men and women and after 90 days the success rate is still higher. All cells in our body renew for men and women in a 54-64 day cycle. Whether the rejuvenation goes fast or slowly depends solely on the person’s sexual health and is not the fault of the product. The Nokomis market study established that the products worked well in a high majority of cases. Men or women over 150 lbs may need two tablets at a time. Others may need only 1 tablet every few days, once they start working.

Thus seemingly catastrophic events may be essential and necessary elements for the evolution of the soul.
Humility facilitates all inner spiritual worth – it is not just an attitude but also a reality based on fact. With inner honesty a spiritual student needs to realize the limitations inherent in just being human. A ‘person’ does not really know ’who’ or ‘what’ they are, where they came from, or their destiny and they are unaware of a multitude of karmic factors, both individual and collective. Humility results in one’s becoming a scholar and a student of truth who has no pedestals from which to fall. The other side of the coin is that scepticism fails in its attempt to discredit its target because in order to do so, it would have to comprehend the subject being criticised. Scepticism and cynicism lack the insight and knowing that would give the argument validity.

Transcendence of anger requires the willingness to surrender the following: l Harbouring chronic resentment and milking ’injustices’. l Unrealistic expectations of the world and relationships, including expectations of convenience, agreement, approval, compliance IN others. l Surrendering self-centredness as a lifestyle and focusing on changing oneself instead of the world. l As above – a willingness to surrender residual infantile expectations; accept human fallibility and limitations; realise that resentment or anger is not about what others ‘are’, but about what they ‘are not’!
