Fish oil: more than just brain food

There is growing evidence that increased consumption of fish may be beneficial to one’s health. Recent studies have found an association between consumption of fish oil and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as improvements in other health conditions such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Research during 2005 at Oxford University showed dramatic improvements in children’s spelling & reading. Many nutritionists believe, due to the British research, that fish oil capsules boost a range of skills in children.

Many of the benefits are derived from the omega 3 fatty acids contained in many fish species. Because approximately half the population do not eat or like fish, fish oil capsules have become popular as an alternative source of fish oil.

Pesticides and pregnancy the ADHD connection

Startling new research showing that pesticides can adversely affect children’s brain development was published recently in the US, highlighting the need to ensure wholesome, organic nutrition. It also raises the issue of adequate intakes of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids during pregnancy to counteract the effects of pesticides.

The research, published in the August edition of the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, found that exposure to organophosphate (OP) pesticides before birth can increase susceptibility to attention deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) in children .OP pesticides target the nervous systems of insects by disrupting the activity of neurotransmitters. In humans, neurotransmitters play a critical role in brain development and are involved in attention and short-term memory.

Exposure to OP compounds may not only affect the neurotransmitters in human brains, but also disrupt DNA replication and the growth of nerve networks. Infants and young children are far more vulnerable to OP exposures than adults because their ability to produce the enzyme that detoxifies the pesticides is still developing.

The US study involved a group of pregnant women and their offspring living in the Salinas Valley, an area of intensive agriculture where about 250 000 kg of pesticides are applied annually. The results showed that as the concentration of OP pesticide metabolites (residues) in pregnant women increased, so did the likelihood that their children would be diagnosed with ADHD. The association was more pronounced in 10 VIBRANT LIFE

boys than in girls. A tenfold increase in levels of measured pesticide residues in the mother’s urine during pregnancy correlated to about a 500% increase in the likelihood of ADHD when their children were tested at age 5.

All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduateschool mountain, but there in the sandpile at Sunday School.

These are the things I learned: • Share everything.

• Play fair.

• Don’t hit people.

• Put things back where you found them.

• Clean up your own mess.

• Don’t take things that aren’t yours.

• Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.

• Wash your hands before you eat.

• Flush.

• Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

• Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

• Take a nap every afternoon.

• When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.

• Be aware of wonder.

• Remember the little seed in the styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

• Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup – they all die.

• So do we.

• And then remember the Dick-andJane books and the first word you learned – the biggest word of all – LOOK. • Everything you need to know is in there somewhere.

• The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation.

• Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

Take any of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or your government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm.

Think what a better world it would be if all – the whole world – had cookies and milk about three o’clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had a basic policy to always put thing back where they found them and to clean up their own mess.

What is school readiness?

School readiness refers to the child’s overall readiness to benefit from formal education in a group setting, and meet the requirements with a minimum of tension and stress.

How much more education do I need before I can start school?

Will my pre-schooler be ready for the challenges of “big school” in 2011?

Are you the parent of a pre-schooler? Is your child’s readiness for school a concern for you? This is the first in a series of articles that will address issues related to school readiness. The focus in this article is on the social skills and emotional strengths that will help your child make the transition to the Grade One easily and happily.

Subsequent articles in Vibrant Life will deal the importance of language development, motor functioning and a range of other subskills that support effective learning in Grade One. 16 VIBRANT LIFE

The socially mature child is one who: • can speak to another child; • can join a group of children in play; • can accept another child’s friendly advances; • tries to include a new child in a group; • can comfort another child in distress; • defends rights of smaller children; • can ask for help;

School readiness • can defend his own right to materials and place; • does not destroy another’s work; • does not hit or pinch; • shares toys or sweets brought to school.

The emotionally mature child is one who: • feels sufficiently secure to separate from the familiar and function independently in an unfamiliar situation; • has sufficient control over his emotions and impulses, so as to handle minor frustrations and cope with disappointment; • has sufficient self discipline to adjust to a structured classroom situation in which it will be expected of him to follow instructions; • has sufficient confidence to tackle new tasks and derive a sense of achievement from tasks well done; • is able to persevere in the face of difficulty and have the freedom to ask for help when necessary.

• is able to sit reasonably quietly for about half an hour and get on independently with a task or play activity You can help your child develop these social skills and emotional strengths by arranging play dates at your home and encouraging your child to go on play dates to other children’s homes (assuming, of course, that you are confident of the supervision provided at the other child’s home). Help your child to develop frustration tolerance by not giving in to every whim and desire. If your child has learnt to accept “No” for an answer he will cope better with the discipline that is necessary to make learning possible in a Grade One class.

When choosing a green food supplement, there’s a huge nutritional difference between green foods made from cereal grasses and those made from the juice of these grasses, writes Jordan Rubin, founder of Garden of Life, America’s leading wholefood company.

By Jordan Rubin There is a class of foods known as green superfoods and one of the premier members of this food group are young cereal grasses. These are among the most nutritionally dense and superior foods on the planet.

While we often eat the fruit of these grasses (called grain), we seldom consume the young cereal grass itself. And that is a huge mistake.

animals that consume a diet consisting solely of cereal grasses, and are able to maintain their weight, strength and vibrant health. The cereal grasses provide them with all the life-giving nutrients they need to build lean, healthy bodies. While we cannot live entirely off of a cereal grass, it doesn’t mean that we should deprive ourselves of the benefits of this superfood.

The key to understanding cereal grasses and their nutritive value is to understand the growth process. Consider wheat grass.

As a young plant, wheat grass is soaking up all of the nutrition that the sun and soil can offer. In order for the grass to bear fruit (grain) it must take in and create a lot of nutrients. Prior to becoming a grain, cereal grass is at its nutritional peak. It is at this point that we should be consuming the cereal grass.

Instead, we often consume the grain of the cereal grasslike wheat, barley or oats.

It’s not that the grain is bad.

The point is that the grass is much, much better.

Glenn-Douglas Haig InnerLifeSkills® coach, author and speaker After 10 years as a copy writer and communications consultant in the corporate world of Johannesburg, Glenn opened one of the first true wellness centres in Johannesburg. Since 2000, he has helped hundreds of people regain their life purpose and improve their general well-being.

In 2003, armed robbers stormed into his home in Fourways and he was shot seven times through his stomach and legs. He was declared dead in an ambulance on the way to Sunninghill Hospital, where he suddenly came to, and after spending five days in a coma, awoke to discover that his right leg had been amputated.

Due to the severe injuries to his insides and leg, doctors estimated he would need at least three months in hospital to recover, yet only nine days after the shooting, Glenn returned home walking on crutches.

However, the world was not the same. He had changed, his dreams and desires had changed and he no longer knew where his happiness lay.

So began a two-year journey of selfdiscovery during which he developed new intuitive abilities and gained meaningful spiritual insights. He currently writes full-time when not giving inspirational talks and

working closely with the Amputee Support Group of South Africa.

He also offers insightful talks and hosts InnerLifeSkills intervention workshops designed specifically for employees and working teams.

Current projects Glenn-Douglas recently published his first in a series of five personal transformation tools under the banner of LifeStones. If you have ever had the urge to visit Wellington, do it now. I found the whole area simply stunning and there are some great wine farms to visit.

One of my favourites has to be Lazanou Organic Vineyards. With just over five hectares, the farm has a variety of cultivars, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Viogner (my personal favourite), Syrah and an exceptional Mourvedre. The microclimate conditions of the farm make it a perfect location for the wine producing grapes to flourish.

Lazanou are currently producing a Chardonnay-Chenin Blanc Viogner 2009, a Chardonnay 2008, a Chenin Blanc 2009, a Syrah and Mourvedre 2009 (a stunning blend) and a Syrah 2008. All the wines are produced in accordance with international organic standards.

The owners, Joe Lazarous and his lovely lady Candice Stephanou, have managed to achieve in just a few years something that is very special. Not only are the wines delightful and receiving accolades from Nedbank and Wine Magazine for the best Green Wine Awards, the whole setup is quite unique.

The farm element is truly a taste of the ‘good life’ (for those of you who remember the T.V. show). There are cows for the milking, sheep for the shearing and chickens and geese for the laying - along with a small organic garden that provides fresh veggies for the whole family. Candice produces her own cheeses, feta and gouda type, butter and stunning salads that are all available on their family Sundays, with the full range of delicious wines (of course).

The family Sundays begin at the beginning of October and go on through the summer months. Please do yourself a favour and book early as they are very popular and only a limited number of people can be accommodated.

Raspberry COMMON NAME Raspberry LATIN NAME/S Rubus idaeus PART USED Leaves, fruit

INTRODUCTION: Raspberry is native to Europe & Asia, but is now also cultivated in many temperate regions such as some parts of Great Britain. The leaves are collected in early summer; the fruit when ripe in summer too. History & folklore indicate that an application of the bruised flowers with honey was beneficial in treating burning fevers and boils. The fruit & it’s sugars, often turned into Raspberry vinegar, were used to treat diseases of the mouth. A gargle too was a suitable remedy for sore throats. Most notably, however, Raspberry leaves have been used for centuries, most commonly in the form of a tea, to help ease & accelerate childbirth.

CONSTITUENTS: The leaves contain polypeptides, flavonoids and tannins. The fruit contains pectin, fruit sugars, citric & malic acids & vitamins A, B and C. KEY ACTIONS: Astringent, Stimulant, Cleansing.

INDICATIONS & USES: Medicinally, it is the Raspberry leaf is often included in many remedies e.g. during fitness routines to help tone slack muscles. As an astringent herb, it is used effectively as a gargle for sore throats, a mouthwash for mouth problems and a suitable lotion for ulcers and wounds.

These effective treatments aside however, the leaves are still predominantly & widely utilised to encourage easy labour. As already mentioned, Raspberry leaves have a long tradition of use in pregnancy to strengthen & tone the tissue of the womb, assisting contractions & monitoring any possible haemorrhage during labour. Taken during the first three months of pregnancy as a digestive aid too, it’s calming effects also help to ease morning sickness.

To benefit most successfully from the many values of Raspberry leaf, the herb should be drunk regularly throughout pregnancy, sometimes even continuing to drink the tea during labour. It is also occasionally drunk for 2-3 weeks after the birth to encourage the muscles to contract and resume their normal shape.

PREPARATION & DOSAGE: Tincture: 2-4ml 3 times daily, preferably between meals.

Infusion: 1 to 2tsps of the dried herb per cup of boiling water, letting it draw/infuse for approx.

15 mins. This may be drunk between 2-3 times daily.

Tired of feeling sick?

Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired? the food that caused the symptoms as the symptoms often result shortly after being in contact with the offending food. People often have a peanut of a shellfish allergy.

An intolerance or delayed Type III food allergy is quite different in that the symptoms are more chronic, things like IBS, headaches, joint pain, fatigue etc and because the reaction can take 2-72hrs for symptoms to become apparent therefore it can be very hard to know which food is the culprit.

This is where the ImuPro IgG test becomes so useful. By knowing which foods your body is producing an immune response to you will be able to avoid those particular foods and reduce your symptoms.

Do you or your children suffer from headaches, post nasal drip, fatigue, irritable bowel, eczema or other skin conditions, does you child have concentration problems? Firstly it is important to note the difference between a food intolerance and a typical food allergy. A typical allergy is when the body produces an immediate reaction to a food, it will produce IgE antibodies and the reaction is usually quite acute something like projectile vomiting, swelling of the tongue or throat closing. These symptoms are often worrying and can be life threatening it is however quite easy to recognise

Food intolerances develop because the gut wall becomes leaky or porous. This means that the food proteins leak through the gut wall. When this happens an inflammatory cascade is set in to motion. The production of these IgG antibodies by the body is often delayed so it can be hard to know exactly which foods are causing your symptoms. The ImuPro test is a specialised blood test that can detect the immune systems response to food – it looks for the presence of IgG antibodies. By knowing your food intolerances, you can avoid these foods and reduce this inflammatory cascade from occurring and thereby reduce your symptoms.

The small changes that make a difference

Fad diets don’t work because sooner or later people tire of following someone else’s formula, return to their old eating habits and regain the weight.

With the right approach, taking off weight need not be temporary, nor does it have to be a particularly difficult thing to do. It has to become a way of life – new habits that eventually become second nature to you.

If you are willing to face up to some basic facts, you can cut through the nonsense to simple principles which virtually assure that you will lose excess weight safely and keep it off.

People get fat because of those extra calories they absorb day to day beyond those their bodies requirements (it boils down to mathematics – if you are eating and drinking more calories (energy) than your body needs, you will put on weight!).

Basically if you eat or drink 100 calories more per day than you need to maintain your present weight, you could put on half a kilo in only 5 weeks. That equals more than 5kgs in a year!!

However the reverse can be attained with mild changes of eating habits! Consider the amount of weight you could lose in just one year by: • Eating just one pat less of butter or margarine daily – lose1.6kgs.

• Cutting out one slice of bread daily and off goes 3kgs.

• Omitting just one pint (500ml) of beer (or coke) per week – take off 1.5kgs.

• Skipping 10 (yes only 10!) crisps/chips a week and lose another kg!

• Giving up 2 small doughnuts a week and lose 2kgs.

• Cutting your sugar intake by 2 teaspoonfuls a day & weigh 1.6kgs less by the end of the year.

• Saying goodbye to one slice of cake or a chocolate a week and lose at least another 2.6kgs.

If you did all of the above, you would have lost approximately 13.3kgs over the year!

Other tips to speed up your weight loss: • Portion sizes can make a huge difference.

Try remembering the plate method – ½ veg or salads, ¼ carbohydrates and a ¼ protein.

Small changes make a difference • A fact – fat is high in calories! So whenever possible, have your foods grilled, baked, steamed or boiled – and with fat trimmed away before cooking.

• Get moving – any way you can!!!

• Eat slowly – chewing each mouthful! It takes 15-20 minutes for your stomach to signal to your brain that you have eaten enough. By eating quickly it’s easier to consume much more food (and calories) than you need before feeling full and stopping.

• Eat more fibre rich food. Fibre is low in calories and helps digestion. It also fills you up a great deal more than its refined counterparts.

I suggest starting by increasing your food and drink awareness by writing down EVERYTHING you eat and drink for a few weeks. Then look at making small comfortable changes to start with – things you know you can easily sustain – and then regularly looking at what other changes you can effortlessly make. Focus on the big picture of reaching a sustainable healthy weight and please, please ban those fad diets forever to the bin:-)!!!

2010 in the Mayan Calendar is a year of preparation for the coming dawn. The months leading up to November could be particularly trying for some.

For many, the challenge at the moment takes the form of financial hardship.

Money is not wealth or abundance.

Money flows where there is wealth and abundance, and it would be helpful not to focus on money, or rather the lack of money at this time, but rather on the concept of abundance. Form follows consciousness.

Most people with money problems want to solve the problem from the same level of thinking they were at which gave rise to the problem. As Einstein said, to solve a problem you have to go to a level of consciousness above the one you were at when you created the problem.

I would suggest the following: • Cycles have been part of our polarized journey for eons.

• Material cycles are normal – don’t take it personally!

• There is enough in the universe to have all your daily needs met.

• Abundance works according to the Law of Attraction.

• Abundance is not something that having money in the bank necessarily brings.

• Money usually arrives unexpectedly in accordance with the inner feeling of Abundance being present.

• Abundance is the acceptance of this moment and all the gifts it contains.

• Abundance is a state of consciousness.

Tool 1.

Feel abundant despite external circumstances or conditions.

Focusing on what we don’t have will only increase ‘not having’ in our awareness.

Our feelings of abundance and security in this moment are creating our daily experience.

Tool 2.

Feel Grateful as much as possible, as often as possible.

Offering gratitude moment by moment aligns your vibration (consciousness) with abundance and security.

Feeling gratitude and abundance first thing in the morning before you open your eyes is a magical tool in setting the vortex for the coming day’s experiences, and is one of the most powerful tools to open yourself up to grace and miracles.

My happiness and sense of security is not based on how much money I have in the bank, but on how I choose to feel in this moment.
